NDC is still deliberating on whether to contest the Ejisu by-election – Gbande

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made it clear that it has not initiated any definitive actions to participate in the Ejisu by-election following the unfortunate passing of the Member of Parliament for the area, John Kumah.

The Deputy General Secretary of the party, Mustapha Gbande, emphasized that the NDC’s current focus is on mourning the loss of the MP rather than hastily pursuing the vacant seat.

Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Gbande urged NDC supporters in the constituency to remain patient, assuring them that the party will disclose its intentions regarding contesting the seat in due course.

“We all have to exercise restraint and look forward as the party comes up with the conversations that will lead up to a decision that will be in the best interest of the party, a decision that will give all of us the victory and expectation that we want.

“As of now, we are not there yet so we encourage party members to continue to work with structures of the party on the ground in anticipation of whatever will come from national. But as of now, we also encourage them to keep mourning with the family because we particularly mourn with the children of the late John Kumah.”

If you are a man try anything! – NDC’s Pablo dares Bryan Acheampong’s ‘NPP won’t transfer power’ statement

The National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo Esq., widely known as Pablo, has issued a challenge to Abetifi Constituency MP Bryan Acheampong, urging him to stand by his statement regarding power transfer if the NDC wins the 2024 general elections.

Earlier, Mr. Acheampong declared that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would not hand over power to the NDC, emphasizing his belief that the NDC cannot win the elections.

“Last year I stood here in Mpraeso and said that whether NDC likes it or not they will never win the December 7 polls and therefore the NPP will not hand over power to them because they cannot win the elections. If you cannot win elections why do you want power to be given to you at all cost?

“As at that time I made the statement Ghana was confronted with economic challenges which made it difficult for contractors to do their work, unable to continue agenda 111 projects among others”,  Mr Acheampong stated.

Pablo from the NDC condemned these statements as irresponsible and unnecessary, cautioning the Abetifi MP to reconsider such claims.

  • We will claim all parliamentary seats held by NDC in Bono East – NPP Chairman

We will claim all parliamentary seats held by NDC in Bono East – NPP Chairman

The Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Ibrahim Baba Bukari, widely known as ‘Game Changer’, has declared the NPP’s firm determination to deprive the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of any parliamentary seat in the region.

Chairman Ibrahim Baba Bukari asserted that the party is vigorously striving to secure all 11 parliamentary seats in the region during the upcoming 2024 general elections.

During an interview on Techiman-based private radio station Radio Link on Monday, March 25, 2024, Chairman Ibrahim Baba Bukari elucidated that each parliamentary seat holds significant importance for the party’s electoral prospects.

He emphasized, “we are battle-ready and not leaving any stone unturned to wrest some of the seats from the NDC. I’ve done scientific research, and I can assure you that currently, I have 7 constituencies under foot.”

“For us, we are going for all the parliamentary seats occupied by the NDC, and as such, we need to work hard in order to appeal to the electorate to enable the NPP to win more seats in the 2024 general election. All seats are winnable; I’m targeting all 11 seats, but at least 7 of them should be won by the NPP.

He further stated, “We have only 3 seats; NDC has 8 seats, but at least we should win 7 of them. We will do our best to enable the party to win more seats and increase the presidential votes in the region”.

Therefore, we must diligently appeal to the electorate to ensure the NPP’s success in the 2024 general election. While our primary aim is to win all 11 seats, securing at least 7 victories is imperative.”

Highlighting the current parliamentary standings, he added, “With only 3 seats currently held by the NPP compared to the NDC’s 8, it is essential for us to win at least 7 seats.

We will exert our utmost efforts to expand our parliamentary representation and increase presidential votes in the region.”

Chairman Ibrahim Baba Bukari emphasized the importance of unity and proactive measures within the party, underscoring these as vital components for achieving victory in the 2024 elections.

He stressed the significance of unity, harmony, and diligent efforts as strategic approaches to reclaiming lost parliamentary seats.

He urged both party leadership and members to work together harmoniously and diligently, avoiding complacency to secure success.

Assuring comprehensive mobilization of resources, both material and human, for an efficient and effective campaign, he pledged, “We will ensure adequate provision of resources to facilitate a robust campaign.”

Moreover, he cautioned against the tendency of party members to defect after losing in primaries, urging them to remain steadfast to bolster the party’s chances of retaining power in 2024.

NDC rejected me because I refused to be a part of a “scheme” for Prof Atta Mills to “give way” – Koku Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has levelled serious accusations against certain members of the NDC party, claiming they were actively plotting to remove the late President Prof Atta Mills from power.

In a series of tweets, Anyidoho asserted that he had resisted pressure to participate in a plan aimed at ousting Prof Atta Mills from the presidency.

He described this alleged scheme as an “evil agenda” and expressed gratitude for not being part of it.

“I refused to be recruited as part of the evil agenda to support ‘nature’ to ‘scheme’ for President Atta-Mills to ‘give way’,” Anyidoho tweeted, implying a calculated move against the current leadership.
The term “give way,” as defined by the Cambridge dictionary, typically refers to yielding space for others, often in the context of traffic.

However, in this political context, it seems to imply making room for a change in leadership.

He is resigning after milking down ECG beyond recognition – NDC’s Elikem Kotoko fires Keli Gadzekpo

The Deputy National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elikem Kotoko, has voiced strong criticism against the actions of the resigned Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Board Chair, Keli Gadzekpo.

In response to Gadzekpo’s resignation, Kotoko attributed the decline of ECG to Gadzekpo’s mismanagement, blaming him for the company’s financial depletion and overall misdirection.

Taking to Twitter to express his concerns, Kotoko asserted that Gadzekpo’s leadership had led ECG to a state of ruin, emphasizing the urgent need for him to step down to prevent further irreparable damage.

“They have exhausted every available resource; it’s imperative to resign before irreversible harm occurs,” Kotoko commented.

He went on to accuse Gadzekpo of mismanagement, highlighting that the resignation comes at a convenient time to evade full responsibility for ECG’s deteriorating condition.

The Board Chair of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Keli Gadzekpo resigned.

    The resignation takes immediate effect.

NDC’s Pablo goes hard on Funny Face over recent car accident

The National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo Esq., also known as Pablo, has strongly criticized Funny Face, real name Benson Nana Yaw Oduro Boateng, for his involvement in a recent car accident that endangered five lives.

Pablo, representing NDC, argues that Funny Face should own up to his irresponsible actions instead of making excuses.

He asserts that excusing such reckless behaviour only serves to encourage further harm.

Emphasizing the importance of accountability, Pablo insists that it’s time for Funny Face to face the consequences and realize the seriousness of his actions.

He also stresses that blaming Funny Face’s ex-girlfriend for his behaviour is unjust, urging a focus on the comedian’s actions and their repercussions.

On Sunday, March 24, 2024, Funny Face, a well-known comedian and actor, was in a car accident in Kasoa, Ghana’s Central Region.

Social media footage showed concerned bystanders gathered around him on that Sunday evening.

An eyewitness reported hearing a collision shortly after parking their own vehicle and seeing Funny Face’s car collide with a woman accompanied by two children and a man on a motorbike.

The injured parties were promptly taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

In recent weeks, Funny Face had been vocal about his struggles to connect with his three children due to his ex-girlfriend’s refusal to allow him access.

The comedian, who had previously battled depression and sought treatment, seemed to be dealing with emotional instability stemming from his ongoing conflict with his former partner, preventing him from seeing his children for the past four years.

This emotional distress was evident in Funny Face’s recent declaration of intent to relocate and start anew to distance himself from his anguish, a statement made before the unfortunate accident occurred.

NAPO is irresponsible and insensitive; he must step down – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded the resignation of Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, following his remarks on the ‘dumsor’ timetable requested by Ghanaians.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, who serves as the Energy Minister, disregarded the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) call for a load-shedding timetable, despite the urgent need due to the country’s unstable power supply.

The PURC had directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to furnish a load management schedule by April 2, 2024, given the ongoing electricity supply challenges.

However, Dr. Opoku Prempeh questioned the necessity of such a timetable, challenging those advocating for it to present their proposed schedules instead.

During the inauguration of the NPP campaign team in the Ashanti Region, he urged critics to devise their own timetables if they deemed it necessary.

The NDC condemned the Minister’s remarks, denouncing them as irresponsible.

Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, expressed the party’s dismay at Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s response to the PURC’s directive in an interview with Citi News.

He suggested that Dr. Prempeh’s comments reflect poorly on the caliber of individuals serving in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government.

“I think I saw Napo’s face, and I saw him grant the interview. You could easily associate that to a man who is frustrated because, obviously, he may not be given the running mate or a man who is drunk. Otherwise, on a clean face of an energy minister who owes responsibility to the people of Ghana to explain to Ghanaians the energy crisis, we don’t make this kind of commentary. They are very unfortunate. They are very irrational. They are very insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians. I was in Oti region over the weekend. It is ‘adomdomadomdom.’ You can’t even power your air condition. Ghanaians are crying and asking that give us a timetable so that we can rationalise our businesses in accordance with the timetable, and you are insulting them.”

“These are the kinds of men that President Akufo-Addo have. This is the kind of liability they have imposed on the finances of this country, who continue to freeze and get paid with taxpayers’ money only to come and spill baggage and irresponsibility back to the people of Ghana… It is clear that we have a useless government in place. We have a bunch of people who do not have the capacity and intellectuality to understand the economy and the problems surrounding it. Let him be responsible. Clearly, the energy minister is not responsible.

Video: Mills paved way for Mahama; anything can happen – Kwesi Ahwoi to Prof. Jane Naana

Celebrations for Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman‘s renomination recently took an unexpected turn at the Ahwoi’s office on Church Street, Labone, sparking debate within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The planned celebration rapidly took a turn for the worse when Kwesi Ahwoi, a prominent member of the NDC and a former interior minister, provoked criticism from the party’s Mahama wing.

The 77-year-old Ahwoi’s remarks, implying a potential repetition of the late President John Evans Atta Mills’ fate with John Dramani Mahama if the NDC wins the presidential election in December 2024, left many guests shocked and led to some leaving prematurely.

During the celebration, Ahwoi proposed a toast to Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, expressing confidence in her potential to become Ghana’s first female Vice President.

However, his subsequent comments advising her to be prepared for the presidency, citing the unexpected turn of events that led to John Mahama assuming the presidency after President Mills’ passing, stirred controversy.

Ahwoi’s statement, captured in a viral video, suggested that unforeseen circumstances could lead to leadership changes within the party, fueling speculation on social media about the health of former President John Mahama, who is gearing up for his fourth presidential contest in December.

“John Mahama was not ready to be president at the time but nature schemed things in such a way that President Mills had to give way to John Mahama. Anything can happen, so Naana, be ever prepared; as your motto says, anything can happen and you can become the President of the Republic of Ghana,” Kwesi Ahwoi said, in a video that has since gone viral.

The Ahwoi family’s historical influence within the NDC, particularly their role in President Rawlings’ selection of Prof Mills as his running mate in 1996, adds weight to Kwesi Ahwoi’s remarks and the ongoing debate within the party regarding its future leadership.

The endorsement of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman’s candidacy by the Ahwoi brothers underscores a strategic move within the NDC, aiming for continuity and stability in leadership.

However, Ahwoi’s comments have ignited discussions about succession planning and the potential dynamics within the party should John Mahama secure victory in the upcoming election.

As the NDC braces for a critical electoral battle in 2024, Ahwoi’s controversial remarks serve as a reminder of the complex dynamics shaping the party’s internal politics and the challenges ahead in navigating its leadership transitions.

“When will NDC choose a running mate from Volta Region” – X user quizzes Sam George

A recent post from a social media user has stirred conversations about the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s choice for vice presidential candidate, particularly regarding representation from the Volta Region.

The Twitter user directed a query to Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament Sam George, highlighting the absence of a Volta Region nominee as the vice for flagbearer John Dramani Mahama.

The Volta Region has historically shown substantial support for the NDC, prompting calls from party loyalists to appoint a vice president from the region.

Despite this, the party has not yet fulfilled these expectations, leading to growing concerns among supporters.

The mention of former President Jerry John Rawlings, who hailed from the Volta Region, has further fueled discussions, with locals advocating for similar representation at the vice presidential level.

Sam George’s tweet about sourcing a tour guide from the Volta Region intensified these sentiments, as echoed by an X user who believes it is time for the Voltarians to be recognized and honored within the party’s leadership structure.

Amidst preparations for the 2024 general elections, the NDC has announced John Mahama as its preferred flagbearer and Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the vice-presidential candidate, sparking further debates on regional representation within the party.

Chairman Wontumi knows something about John Kumah’s death – NDC Comm Officer alleges

The Deputy Bono Regional Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC),  Eric Adjei  has made startling allegations against Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Adjei alleges that Chairman Wontumi may possess information related to the death of Deputy Finance Minister John Kumah.

Adjei claims that Chairman Wontumi’s aide confirmed to him the rumours, originally spread by media personality Captain Smart, about poisoned meat allegedly leading to John Kumah’s demise.

The NDC official revealed that the aide indicated Chairman Wontumi was well-informed and in control during the event, unlike the late deputy minister.

Further elaborating, Adjei asserted that Chairman Wontumi was conscious of the situation and consumed less poison compared to John Kumah.

According to him, both Chairman Wontumi and the late deputy finance minister were present at the event where the poisoning allegedly occurred.

“The aide confirmed that Chairman Wontumi and the late deputy finance minister were both present and consumed the poison, but Chairman Wontumi ingested a smaller amount compared to John Kumah,” stated Eric Adjei.

Akufo-Addo’s family set the pace for homosexuality practice in Ghana- Malik Basintale alleges

The Deputy Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has made a controversial claim suggesting that the Akufo-Addo family played a role in introducing homosexuality to Ghana.

Basintale stated that Paul Danquah, who is said to be Akufo-Addo’s cousin and the son of the esteemed J.B. Danquah was internationally known for his homosexuality.

According to Basintale, Danquah was married to a British man named Peter Pollock, and the couple openly displayed their queer lifestyle around the world.

Basintale argued that this is evidence of the Addo-Danquah family not only introducing homosexuality to Africa but also influencing its global presence.

“In the whole world, Nana Addo’s family began the homosexuality trend. There is an individual called Paul Danquah he is a part of Akufo Addo’s family, the first to be identified as gay, he married a guy called Peter Pollock and was suspended from UK as a result of their open relationship to Australia, you can research to find out ,” Malik Basintale stated.

Paul Danquah, born Joseph Paul Walcott (25 May 1925 – 13 August 2015), was a British film actor, known particularly for his role in the film ‘A Taste of Honey’ (1961), adapted from the 1958 play of the same name written by Shelagh Delaney.

He later became a barrister and a bank consultant.

  • ‘Senseless’, Wontumi should mind his utterances; Prof. Jane Naana is not his mate – NDC Comm Officer

The Deputy Bono Regional Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Eric Adjei, has strongly criticized NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, for making baseless allegations against John Dramani Mahama’s 2024 running mate, Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.

In a recent statement, Chairman Wontumi claimed that Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang was secretly married to former President Mahama in 2012 and insinuated an ongoing affair between them, allegedly unknown to Mahama’s wife, Lordina Mahama.

Eric Adjei condemned these claims, labelling Chairman Wontumi as an irresponsible individual whose words should not be taken seriously in the political arena.

He emphasised that Wontumi lacks the qualifications and credibility to make such allegations and urged the public to disregard his statements.

Highlighting Prof Jane Naana’s significant contributions to society as a prominent female figure and role model, Eric Adjei stressed that her achievements should not be undermined by unsubstantiated political attacks.

He cautioned against taking Wontumi’s remarks seriously, accusing him of engaging in misinformation tactics.

Eric Adjei concluded by reaffirming the respect and admiration Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang commands, emphasizing that she should not be subjected to baseless accusations or political smears orchestrated by individuals like Chairman Wontumi.

“I’m saying that if we are to take somebody seriously in this country, not Chairman Wontumi, he is unserious , senseless and lacks manners. Prof. Jane Naana ought not to be messed with, her impact and achievement to society or the country at large is significant. Chairman Wontumi ought not to mess with her,” Eric Adjei stated.

Bagbin’s response to Presidency’s anti-gay letter impressive – Osman Ayariga

Deputy Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Osman Ayariga ESQ, has commended the recent address delivered by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, describing it as a “masterpiece” in terms of its academic and legal acumen.

In an interview with Helen Appiah-Ampofo on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show on March 21, Ayariga lauded Bagbin’s ability to analyze various issues, cite case laws, and apply administrative law effectively in his speech.

He highlighted Bagbin’s comprehensive coverage of constitutional mandates and the roles of individuals involved in the parliamentary process.

Expanding on Bagbin’s critique of the President’s actions, Ayariga suggested that the Speaker’s remarks implied a characterization of the President as a “walking illegality,” citing alleged instances of illegal conduct and attempts to undermine parliamentary authority.

“Speaker Bagbin’s speech is a masterpiece so far as academic exercise and legal jurisprudent is concern. You read through and you will understand how he’s able to analyze the various issues and also quote case laws to buttress his points and instances where he needs to apply some administrative law, he then applies it. He also talks about the constitution itself and talks about the mandates of every person that was involved in this entire tango.

“Inferring from what the Speaker actually wrote, there is nothing short of just calling the President a walking illegality that is clearly what the Speaker was trying to tell us. The President consistently has engaged in so many illegal acts and aside from that indirectly tries to denigrate the powers of Parliament.”

“I can clearly infer that the president is a walking illegality, and he doesn’t have respect for the constitution nor the organs of government, especially Parliament. And Parliament, coming from such a very honorable house, I thought that he would have held Parliament in high esteem, but I do not see that happening,” he said.

Expressing disappointment with what he perceived as the President’s disregard for constitutional principles and parliamentary autonomy, Ayariga lamented the lack of respect shown towards Parliament, given its esteemed position in governance.

Turning to the ongoing debate surrounding the LGBTQ+ bill, Mr Ayariga praised the courage and principles demonstrated by Members of Parliament (MPs).

He noted that while MPs may not necessarily oppose the bill entirely, they express reservations about specific provisions and associated penalties.

Moreover, Mr Ayariga echoed the sentiments of the Ghanaian Parliament, conveying a sense of dissatisfaction with the President’s response to the bill.

He emphasized the significant efforts undertaken by MPs to advance the bill through the legislative process, underscoring the perceived lack of appreciation for their efforts by the executive branch.

“I believe that Members of Parliament are men of courage, they are men of principles,” Ayariga stated. “Most of them are not against the bill entirely but against certain portions and punishments.”

“The parliament of Ghana feels very spited, and I also agree with them,” affirmed Ayariga. “Considering the fact that Members of Parliament need to go through a laborious process to get the bill passed”.

Anti-gay bill: Akufo-Addo is exhibiting signs of Napoleonic syndrome – Prof. Ayensu-Danquah

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Essikado-Ketan constituency in the Western Region, Professor Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s delay in accepting and assenting to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024 (anti-gay bill).

The bill was unanimously passed by Parliament on Wednesday, February 28, but President Akufo-Addo has not yet assented to it for it to become law.

Speaking on TV3 New Day on Thursday, March 21, Prof. Ayensu-Danquah accused the President of being contentious and overly assertive. She likened his behavior to what she termed as the Napoleonic syndrome, suggesting that he consistently seeks to assert dominance and be the center of attention.

She emphasized that the President, like any other individual, is not above the legislature and should accept and assent to the anti-gay bill as required.

In a letter dated March 18, President Akufo-Addo requested Parliament to halt the transmission of the bill to the presidency for assent, citing pending applications for an interlocutory injunction filed at the Supreme Court.

In response, Speaker Alban Bagbin expressed strong dissatisfaction with the President’s refusal to assent to the bill, stating that it was contemptuous.

Bagbin announced the suspension of vetting and approval of the President’s ministerial nominees pending a Supreme Court ruling against the vetting exercise, following an interlocutory injunction filed at the Supreme Court by an MP.

Lady laments Ghana’s economic challenges; warns against opting for Mahama as a solution

A viral video circulating on social media features an unnamed woman vehemently opposing the choice of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Leader John Dramani Mahama as the remedy for Ghana’s economic woes.

The woman argues that Mahama has held numerous political positions within Ghana’s political framework but has failed to deliver substantial improvements.

She points out that despite serving as an Assemblyman, Member of Parliament, and President, Mahama’s impact on the well-being of Ghanaians has been minimal.

Expressing the view that Ghana requires an innovative leader capable of revitalising the country’s dwindling economy, she dismisses Mahama’s extensive experience as lacking in fresh ideas and solutions.

She firmly asserts that Mahama’s track record indicates he is not fit to lead Ghana forward.

“Mahama has nothing new to offer; his various roles have yielded little to no positive impact. His presidency was marked by failure. Ghana deserves a better leader to the current economic challenges,” the woman declared in a video shared on X platform.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, has countered assertions suggesting that former President John Dramani Mahama bears responsibility for the recent power outages, commonly termed as ‘dumsor.’

Amid concerns over intermittent power cuts experienced in various parts of the country, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has assured the public that there is no immediate need for a load-shedding schedule.

However, the NDC has criticized the government’s handling of the ‘dumsor’ situation and has called for a timetable to address it.

During an interview on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi TV, Sammy Gyamfi attributed the sporadic power outages to issues inherited from previous administrations. He stressed that ‘dumsor’ was not instigated by John Dramani Mahama or the NDC.

Gyamfi recalled instances of ‘dumsor’ during past administrations and linked the problem to insufficient investment in power generation to meet escalating demand.

24-hour economic policy will be an easy way to increase vacancies for employment generation- Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to introduce a 24-hour economy as a strategic move to enhance job creation.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer mentioned that this initiative would open up numerous employment vacancies, which he discussed while addressing members of the Oti Regional House of Chiefs on Monday, March 18.

During his speech, Mahama emphasised that the policy would be formally introduced with detailed plans before he assumes office.

He clarified that while the 24-hour economy proposal is a significant avenue for job generation, it would not be the sole strategy for employment.

He assured that participation in this initiative would be optional, asserting, “If you want to join, you join.”

“It is an easy way to increase the vacancies for employment generation while we add on more avenues. It doesn’t mean that that is the only strategy for employment.

“We will outdoor it before we come into government and when we come into government we will hit the ground running with it. As I said, it is not going to be compulsory. If you want to join, you join,” Mr. Mahama said.

The proposed 24-hour economy aims to provide additional opportunities for employment while diversifying avenues for economic growth, as outlined by Mahama in his recent address.

Akosombo Dam spillage victims have not received funds from govt – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has contested government assertions regarding the allocation of approximately GH¢80 million for rehabilitation efforts in flood-affected communities following the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.

The opposition party refutes any ongoing intervention works by the government or substantial relief efforts for victims of the 2023 flooding incidents.

NDC’s Volta Regional Communications Officer, Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze, emphasized in a press release.

According to him, it is unacceptable for the government to make false assurances and for the President to misinform the public about the aid being provided to alleviate their suffering.

“It is therefore unconscionable for the government to make false promises and for the President to mislead the public about the support being provided to mitigate their suffering”, he added.

President Akufo-Addo, in his 67th National Independence Day address in Koforidua, claimed, “As set out in the 2024 budget, the Government has set aside two hundred and twenty million cedis (GH¢220 million), of which eighty million cedis (GH¢80 million) has already been released by the Ministry of Finance, to support the ongoing rehabilitation efforts for the affected communities. The government will stop at nothing to restore normalcy to the lives and livelihoods of all affected persons.”

The NDC contends that this statement is misleading, as there are no visible signs of rehabilitation projects or financial aid in the affected areas. They assert, “It is evident that the promised relief funds have not been provided.”

Instead, private individuals, organizations, companies, and foreign entities have stepped in with deliberate interventions, driven by continuous advocacy and appeals.

The lack of transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the allocated funds intended to aid flood victims is questioned by Mr. Agbleze.

He lamented that victims continue to endure the catastrophic consequences of the disaster, including displacement of thousands, loss of livelihoods, and property damage worth millions of cedis.

The NDC demands that the NPP government refrain from politicizing the human-induced disaster, provide immediate clarification on the status of the allocated funds, and ensure prompt distribution to the intended beneficiaries.

They stressed that the people of the Volta Region, like all other regions, deserve complete transparency and timely assistance during this crisis.

Mr. Agbleze concluded by affirming the NDC’s unwavering solidarity with the people of the Volta Region and their commitment to advocating for their rights, interests, and welfare.

“We call on the NPP government to desist from callously politicizing the human-induced disaster, immediately provide clarity on the status of the allocated funds, and ensure that they get to the intended beneficiaries without further delay. The people of the Volta Region, like any other region, deserve nothing less than full transparency and timely assistance in this time of crisis.

“The NDC stands in solidarity with the people of the Volta Region and will thus relentlessly continue to advocate for their rights, interests, and welfare”, he concluded.

Election 2024: You can’t stop us from flying drones – NDC to EC

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, has clarified that the party’s intention to employ drones during the 2024 general elections will exclusively cover constituencies within the Greater Accra Region.

On Wednesday, March 13, Nii Ashie Moore announced a strategic initiative to deploy drones for monitoring the 2024 general elections in the region. The party’s objective is to safeguard over two million votes and enhance monitoring mechanisms to prevent potential irregularities.

However, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), expressed opposition to the NDC’s plan in a media interview.

During an interview on the Citiuation Room on Citi TV, on Thursday, March 14, Mr. Ashie Moore emphasized that the EC lacks the authority to prohibit the Greater Accra Regional Office of the NDC from utilizing drones to monitor the elections.

Mr. Ashie Moore explained that the decision was made to protect the party’s votes and emphasized that the national leadership of the party played no role in the regional decision-making process. He asserted that they do not require approval from the national leadership to execute their plan.

“Let me put it on record that the EC doesn’t have that mandate, power, that right to say that one cannot use drones before, during and after elections in Ghana. There’s no single L. I that regulates that. We have written to the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, when they give us the approval, we are going to use the drones.”

“This is a regional plan and not a national thing. We plan to do within our remit, the 34 constituencies within the Greater Accra Region. This has nothing to do with our party constitution or manifesto. The national may want to do some inputs or some adjustments, we don’t need approval to do those things. All that we want to do is to protect our votes,” he clarified.

“We realised a lot of anomalies during the last exercise [limited voter registration], so we decided that before, during and after 7th December elections we are going to use drones.”

I don’t trust anyone, even my family can disappoint me during elections – Greater Accra NDC chairman

The Greater Accra Regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, has stated that hardly does he depend on his family members for votes.

In an interview on Neat FM on March 13, 2024, he indicated at the polls everything is possible as individuals could turn back on their promises in the quest for personal gains.

He referenced a past election where a candidate obtained only one vote, despite having family members.

“When it comes to elections, it is very crucial, and I can say on authority that the people that I live with in the house, I don’t trust all of them.

“Let me quote again: the people that I live with in the house, I don’t trust them, so when it comes to an election, it is very crucial. So, I don’t trust anybody,” he said.

When questioned about the inclusion of his wife in this sentiment, Moore affirmed his stance, indicating that his mistrust encompasses even those closest to him.

“I am telling you; don’t you remember that a certain politician had one vote during the election? I am not speaking for the national executives of the party… I am talking about the Greater Accra Region, Ga-Dangbe.

“So, I want to take my security into my own hands guided by law. I do not want to go against the law, so I want to protect myself,” he added.

We demand an apology from Afenyo-Markin for attacking Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang- NDC MP’s

Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are calling for an apology from Majority Leader Afenyo-Markin following derogatory remarks regarding the age of John Dramani Mahama’s running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang.

During a debate, Afenyo-Markin implied that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s age, being a woman in her 70s, reflects a lack of forward-thinking leadership within the NDC, sparking condemnation from fellow MPs.

“Even if you look at his choice of running mate, he could not get somebody that one could say that they are planning for the future. The person is over 70 years old.

“There is no succession plan. Mr. Speaker, from day one, the government will be in crisis. Mr Speaker, they went to pick a very old person who could not perform at the Education Ministry,” Afenyo-Markin said before the Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, rose to issue a spirited rebuttal to the Majority Leader.

Gizella Akushika Tetteh-Agbotui, representing the Awutu Senya West Constituency, emphasised the need for Afenyo-Markin to publicly apologise, highlighting Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s intelligence and qualifications, and denouncing the disrespectful nature of the comments, particularly in the wake of International Women’s Day celebrations.

“It is totally unfair to women to be treated that way. Prof.Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang is a very intelligent woman, she taught Afenyo-Markin in school communications, she doesn’t deserve the disrespect he is getting especially after celebrating International Women’s day, Afenyo-Markin must publicly apologise,” Gizella Akushika Tetteh-Agbotui stated.

NDC to use drones for December polls surveillance

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, has unveiled a strategic initiative to employ drones for monitoring the upcoming December general elections in the region.

The primary objective, as outlined by Ashie Moore, is to safeguard the security of over two million votes for the party and enhance surveillance mechanisms to preempt any potential irregularities.

Viewing this effort as crucial in influencing the election’s outcome, the NDC sets a targeted goal of securing over two million votes in the region.

Ashie Moore revealed that comprehensive plans are already in progress, including the training of personnel designated to operate the drones.

“Next week, we are going to train constituency executives on how to use drones to monitor what happens during the elections,” Ashie Moore told cheering supporters.

While the specific details of the deployment remain undisclosed, Ashie Moore emphasized the party’s unwavering commitment to securing all essential resources for a seamless electoral process.

The NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, echoed the call for vigilance during the polls.

“One of the key aspects of this election will be vigilance. We can conduct extensive campaigns, but without vigilance on the day and comprehensive coverage of every polling station with eagle eyes, our objectives may not be achieved. Therefore, especially in Greater Accra, we urge you to have the best party agents covering your polling stations.”

Video: Minority MPs go wild on Afenyo-Markin for mocking Prof Opoku-Agyemang’s age

Parliament witnessed heightened tensions as Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin launched a scathing attack on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, sparking fury from the Minority bench.

During the State of the Nation Address (SONA) debate on March 11, Afenyo-Markin criticized Opoku-Agyemang’s tenure as education minister and raised concerns about her age, pointing out that, at 70 years old, her selection lacked foresight and could potentially lead to a leadership crisis in the absence of a succession plan if the NDC were to win the 2024 elections.

He expressed skepticism about the NDC’s planning for the future, emphasizing that their choice of a running mate over 70 years old lacked strategic foresight and could result in a government crisis. The remarks triggered initial protests from the Deputy Minority Chief Whip.

Afenyo-Markin continued his criticism during a second opportunity to speak, questioning the NDC’s lack of visionary leadership and the selection of Opoku-Agyemang as a running mate, highlighting her retirement from UCC as VC and alleged poor performance at the Ministry of Education.

“It is the same old NDC. It is the same old John Mahama. Mr Speaker, perish the thought, should he even get the opportunity he has only four years constitutionally.

“There would be no sense of urgency in him because he has nothing to lose. Even if you look at his choice of running mate, he could not get somebody that one could say that they are planning for the future.

“The person is over 70 years old, they have no succession plan. From day one, their government will be in crisis. They went to pick the very old person who could not perform at the Education Ministry,” he submitted triggering initial protest from the Deputy Minority Chief Whip.

“The flagbearer, constitutionally has just one term. Should that happen, the flagbearer has chosen a running mate, Mr. Speaker. Under normal circumstances, they should have given us a running mate who can offer a future to Ghana.

“Like we have given a flagbearer who represents the future of Ghana. You have brought a running mate who retired from UCC as VC and came to the Ministry of Education to perform abysmally. The E-blocks she could not complete them. She did only 29. Today, you say the running mate should be the future of this country,” he said.

The comments incited outrage among NDC members, prompting demands for an immediate retraction and apology from Afenyo-Markin. The Minority caucus banged tables in protest, arguing that attacking Opoku-Agyemang’s age was unjustifiable, particularly in light of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s age.

The escalating tension led to the suspension of proceedings for an hour by the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako. Outside the chamber, Ketu South MP Dzifa Gomashie condemned Afenyo-Markin’s comments as “despicable,” highlighting Opoku-Agyemang’s achievements and urging an apology from the NPP leadership.

Upon resumption, Afenyo-Markin withdrew his remarks, allowing the debate on the State of the Nation Address to proceed.

  • Even God will be angry with us; $450m on Cathedral is unnecessary – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Even God will be angry with us; $450m on Cathedral is unnecessary – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed strong disapproval of the allocation of $450 million for the National Cathedral project.

During a gathering with religious leaders in Wa as part of the “Building Ghana Tour,” Mahama criticised the prioritisation of the cathedral over pressing challenges in the education sector.

Mahama questioned the use of public funds for the cathedral, emphasising that President Nana Akufo-Addo’s personal commitment to God should be funded by individuals who share the project’s vision.

“The President said that he made a pledge to God that if he won the election he would build a Cathedral for him. So it is his personal pledge and if he wants to build it, he must gather people who support that conviction to build that and we were told that public funds were not going to be used for the Cathedral,” former president John Dramani Mahama stated.

He highlighted the contradiction between the government’s promise not to use public funds for the cathedral and the revelation that public taxes were being utilised.

“But eventually, we found that the Minister of Finance was releasing public taxes. We can’t use public funds including the funds of people of other denominations to build a Cathedral for Christians alone”, he added.

“So far, 58 million dollars of public funds have been spent just to dig a deep hole and you have to ask yourself is it justified in this day and age when children don’t have desks in schools when children do not have textbooks?”

The former President, appalled by the $58 million spent on digging a hole for the cathedral, pointed out the lack of desks and textbooks in schools.

He argued that redirecting the funds toward education, given the government’s substantial expenses on consultancy services for the cathedral, would be a more judicious use of resources.

Mahama concluded, “For five years, we have not provided our basic schools with textbooks even though we have come out with a new curriculum because we say there is no money, and you say we should use 450 million dollars to build a Cathedral, even God will be angry with us.”

  • If the driver has no experience; what difference will the driver’s mate make – Mahama to Bawumia

If the driver has no experience; what difference will the driver’s mate make – Mahama to Bawumia

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, passionately emphasized the crucial importance of experience over inexperience in the upcoming presidential election.

Drawing a vivid metaphor, Mahama responded to the recent remarks made by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, comparing his role to that of a driver and a driver’s mate.

While delivering a speech on February 7, Dr. Bawumia positioned himself as a driver’s mate seeking promotion to the driver’s seat, urging Ghanaians to vote for him in the upcoming election.

However, Mahama was quick to question this proposition, asserting that if the current driver has failed to navigate the road properly and adhere to traffic regulations, promoting the mate might not yield better results.

Mahama, a former president, urged the public to consider his experience as a former driver, emphasising that the nation cannot afford to hand over the metaphorical “vehicle” to an inadequately trained driver’s mate. He stated, “If the driver couldn’t drive well, how much less the driver’s mate?”

“And so on 7th December, the driver is going and if the driver hasn’t driven properly these seven years. We are not going to hand over the car to the driver’s mate. If even the driver couldn’t drive well, how much less the driver’s mate?

“We all know what we’ve gone through these past seven and half years. The opportunity has come for us to rescue our nation from the incompetence and inept clueless administration of Nana Akufo-Addo and his driver’s mate”.

John Mahama advised that his experience as a former driver should be preferred over that of a poorly-trained driver’s mate.

“So I leave you with one final question. If you have a car and the driver didn’t drive well and you are taking your car, will you give it to your former experienced driver or the careless driver’s mate? I will give it to the former experienced driver”, John Mahama stated.

During the two-day tour of the Upper West Region, Mahama engaged with the public, allowing them to voice their concerns and opinions.

He reiterated his commitment to measured promises, particularly regarding the calls for enhanced remuneration by public sector workers.

As the election date approaches, the debate between experience and change continues, with Mahama positioning himself as the experienced hand that Ghana needs to navigate the challenges ahead.

The electorate eagerly awaits the unfolding political developments in the lead-up to the crucial decision on December 7th.

I won a lottery with the late John Kumah’s telephone number – NDC man

A prominent member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), PV Jantuah shared that he won a lottery using the late John Kumah‘s telephone number.

Shocked by Kumah’s sudden death, Jantuah used the deceased’s number for the lottery on the day he passed away, attributing his win to Kumah’s posthumous provision for him.

Speaking on the radio, Jantuah expressed his gratitude, asserting, “John Kumah decided to go without informing me. However, even after his death, my brother is making provisions for my life. I won the lottery with his contact. I almost hit all three numbers, but even two was okay for me.”

In a light-hearted remark, Jantuah humorously shared his plans to seek John Kumah’s mortuary number for another chance at winning big, saying, “My next line of action is to go and look for his mortuary number too. John Kumah has a good soul, and even in his death, he is thinking about his brother; his enemies have been put to shame.”

John Kumah, the late Deputy Finance Minister, passed away while en route to Accra from Kumasi.

Despite his illness, he had returned from Germany to participate in the 2024 Independence Day celebrations in his constituency.

  • NDC running mates since 1992

    NDC running mates since 1992

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially chosen Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate for its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The decision to re-nominate Professor Opoku-Agyemang, who previously served as the running mate in the 2020 elections, underscored the party’s commitment to its experienced and capable leadership.

The significance of selecting a running mate in the political arena cannot be overstated.

It not only influences electoral outcomes but also mirrors the ideological trajectory of political parties.

This marks the ninth time since the inception of the Fourth Republic that the NDC has deliberated on a running mate, each decision playing a pivotal role in the party’s journey through the electoral landscape.

A retrospective look at past running mates and their electoral impact reveals a mix of victories and challenges for the NDC.

From the triumphant Rawlings-Arkaah ticket in 1992 to the unfortunate loss in 2016 with the Mahama-Amissah Arthur combination, the party has navigated through various dynamics in its quest for political success.

As the NDC gears up for the 2024 elections, the selection of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang brings an element of continuity and experience.

Her previous collaboration with John Dramani Mahama in 2020 demonstrated a commitment to breaking gender barriers, as she became the first female running mate in the Fourth Republic.

Although the ticket did not secure victory in 2020, the NDC remains steadfast in its pursuit of electoral success.

  • Naana Opoku Agyemang is too old to serve as Mahama’s vice president – Odike to Mahama

Founder and leader of the Union Government, Akwasi Addai Odike has advised, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama against selecting Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 general election.

Mr Odike expressed concerns about Opoku-Agyemang’s age, suggesting that, at 70, she is too old for the role and should be allowed to retire from public life.

During an appearance on the Ghana Kasa show on Kasapa 102.5FM, Mr Odike argued that menopause could affect a woman’s cognitive abilities and physical coordination.

He urged Mahama to reconsider his choice and opt for a more capable candidate, especially from the Ashanti region.

Mr Odike emphasized that the NDC has not adequately rewarded the Ashanti region for its consistent support over the years.

“This woman John Mahama is selecting to partner him as running mate for a second time is too old. She is 70 years old, she is in her menopausal stage. When women are in their menopause, it has an effect on how they do their things. Some of them suffer from dementia and become very forgetful. Menopause can even cause a woman to bathe one leg and leave the other when bathing.

“The woman is too old, you are foisting this lady on Ghanaians. Nobody hates her, but in life, there’s an extent to which everyone can perform. She’s done her part and it is time for others to continue. If John Mahama selected her once and they failed to win power, he should dump her and select a more capable person, especially from the Ashanti region. Otherwise, some of us will wage a campaign against the NDC,” Akwasi Addai Odike said on Ghana Kasa show on Kasapa 102.5FM Tuesday.

The businessman cum politician proposed alternative candidates from the Ashanti region, including Samuel Sarpong, Awuah Darko, Kojo Bonsu, and Dr. Kwabena Duffuor.

He warned that if Mahama persisted with his choice, some individuals would launch a campaign against the NDC.

Despite these objections, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NDC unanimously endorsed the nomination of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as John Mahama’s running mate.

“If you take out the Greater Accra Region, the Ashanti region is the other region that gives the NDC huge votes. The NDC is working hard in the Ashanti Region but the party has decided not to select a leader from that Region. We have great personalities from the Region who could be running mates, the likes of Samuel Sarpong a renowned Security expert, Awuah Darko, Kojo Bonsu and Dr. Kwabena Duffuor who performed excellently while in office as Finance Minister under President Mills. Even late President Rawlings acknowledged the importance of the Ashanti region to the NDC. But sadly, the party has sidelined the region when selecting a president or running mate.”

Mahama, in response to the endorsement, praised Opoku-Agyemang’s qualities and announced that the official public announcement of his running mate would occur on March 7, 2024.

  • 24-hour economy won’t work, bring another policy – Ghanaian to NDC

24-hour economy won’t work, bring another policy – Ghanaian to NDC

A man in a viral video has stated that the Ghanaians will not cast their votes to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama come December 7.

He explained that John Dramani Mahama’s intention to implement a 24-hour economy is a fiasco as it is a way to scam Ghanaians.

According to him, Mahama must come up with a policy that will garner support from electorates and not one that will not contribute to the development of the country.

“NDC National Chairman, Aseidu Nketia, JohnDramani Mahama and Fiifi Kwetey, Ghanaians say your 24-hour economy is a scam. Bring another plan on board It won’t work,” he added.

Mahama’s proposal for a 24-hour economy forms a key component of his 2024 presidential election agenda, driven by the belief that such a policy would significantly contribute to economic expansion and youth employment.

In commemoration of the 2023 International Youth Day, Mahama affirmed his administration’s commitment to nurturing a skilled and entrepreneurial youth.

However, Mr. Kyerematen has stressed that the successful realization of this ambitious goal necessitates robust frameworks for industrialization, comprehensive infrastructure development, and a thriving tourism sector.

Despite Mahama’s economic policy drawing support, it has faced criticism, notably from Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

During his Northern Region tour, Dr. Bawumia expressed skepticism about the feasibility of implementing a 24-hour economy.

He argued that such an endeavor requires a profound understanding of its implications and prerequisites.

“I hear John Mahama has a new idea, and he wants to run a 24-hour economy. I say, where did he get this idea from? It is not a bright idea! A 24-hour economy cannot be legislated by the government. Today, there are many businesses that are already working for 24 hours. Hospitals are open for 24 hours. You can buy electricity for 24 hours. Because of digitalization, you can transfer money for 24 hours. There are many chop bars and restaurants that are open for 24 hours,” said Dr. Bawumia.

NDC taking credit for Free SHS policy they opposed – Bawumia

In one of vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s lectures on Nation Building he accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for taking credit for initiating Free Senior High School (FSHS).

According to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) through president Akufo-Addo implemented the policy despite various sabotages and criticism from the NDC.

He added due to the NPP’s determination of making Ghana’s educational system, fought through the hurdles to make the policy a reality.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to remember that the NDC opposed and bastardised the Free Senior High School policy  proposed by president Nana Akufo-Addo. They said it was a hoax, they said it was a 419 promise, they said if they had 2 billion Ghana cedis they would not spend it on free SHS. They said free SHS education will collapse the education system”.

“They went on demonstrations against Free SHS. They even went to the Supreme Court to stop the implementation of Free SHS. They run over 40 adverts against free SHS, but the study and visionary Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, he stuck to his grounds because he knew what was good for this country and he has successfully implemented Free SHS policy. But what we hear today, the NDC and their flag bearer is looking us straight in the eye and saying they started free SHS. Ewurade Nyankopong. Are they confused?,” he added.

The Free Senior High School (Free SHS) education policy in Ghana was initiated during the September 2017 administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Originating from one of the President’s campaign promises during the 2016 election period, the policy has evolved into a crucial component of Ghana’s educational system.

As per reports from Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) over 5.7 million Ghanaian students have benefitted from the programme.

The education think tank has revealed that the Free SHS policy has granted  a substantial increase in secondary school enrollment, soaring from 813,448 in the 2016/17 academic year to 1.3 million in the 2022/23 academic year.

The Akufo-Addo-led administration has faced criticism from various civil society organizations and educational institutions.

The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) and other analysts have also highlighted fiscal and quality challenges that require careful reconsideration.

In November 2023, ISSER underscored the importance of reviewing specific aspects of the Free SHS program, including the sustainability of the government fully covering students’ tuition and costs within budget constraints.

The escalating teacher-student ratios in public SHS schools were also noted, impacting resources and learning.

The World Bank suggested means-testing and cost-sharing arrangements by parents to optimize program benefits and affordability.

In February 2024,  the Executive Director of the Institute for Education Services (IFEST),Dr. Peter Anti, emphasized that acknowledging funding challenges in the Free SHS program is crucial for making progress in addressing the issue.

“While we were doing double track, we should have made a conscious effort to improve the infrastructure in our schools. Now we don’t know what is happening, we decided to go and do other kinds of projects within the same education sector,” he said.

We drink water with sheep, goats and cows – Damongo residents call on Mahama

Some women in Damongo, Savannah region, have alleged that they resort to boreholes for water, which also serves as a source of water for sheep, goats and cows.

Speaking to the media, the women who had lighted kerosene lanterns on their heads stated asserted that the region has been rejected by the Akufo-Addo-led administration despite assurances to provide potable water .

According to them, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama is the only individual who can change the current state of the region.According to them, “ We are looking for JM because we are in darkness, we are looking for JM in the Savannah region to come and save us, he is our light. We drink water from tanks, we don’t have water, no water, what we need is just the water. NPP promised us water and zero. We’re booking for John to come and give us water. We drink from dam water and not pipe water. We drink water with sheep, goats and cows. We want proper water.

How much did Ghana lose over termination of PDS contract?

In recent days, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has on two occasions claimed that Ghana lost $2 billion as a result of the termination of the Power Distribution Service (PDS) concession agreement.

In a press statement on February 12, he wrote that “Ghana lost 2 billion dollars as a result of this scandal according to the IEA.”

A week later, on February 19, at the NDC’s moment of truth press conference, he reiterated that “according to the Institute of Economic Affairs, Ghana lost $2 billion as a result of this scandal, which was orchestrated by Bawumia alone.”

    What are the facts?

On August 5, 2014, the Government of Ghana signed a deal with the United States Government that required, among other things, that Ghana introduce private sector participation (PSP) in the operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The U.S. government signed the deal, known as the Power Compact, through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

The deal enjoined Ghana to allow a private operator to inject USD 580 million into ECG over a five-year period. This private operator was to be in charge of the retail and distribution business of ECG.

According to the original Power Compact agreement, private participation was to involve both foreign and local entities. The foreign entity was to hold 80 per cent of the shares while the local entities were entitled to a 20 per cent stake.

However, the Akufo-Addo-led government re-negotiated the shareholding structure to 51 per cent Ghanaian and 49 per cent foreign when it assumed office in 2017.

The government finally settled on three Ghanaian companies, and two foreign entities, which formed the PDS consortium, which started operations in March 2019. In July of that same year, the government suspended the company’s operations because of an issue with PDS’s Demand Guarantee.

Three months later, in October, the government terminated the contract, claiming that the Ghanaian companies presented a fraudulent Demand Guarantee.

The US government, through its embassy in Ghana, swiftly responded that the government should reinstate PDS.

The U.S. government insisted that, regardless of what the government had found, the concessionaire should stand. The government of Ghana did not budge.

Through the Power Compact, the US had planned to make available USD498,200,000 to improve Ghana’s energy situation. As a result of the Ghana government’s insistence on not reinstating PDS and failing to ensure that ECG was privatized, as the Compact mandated, the US made it clear it will not release the second tranche of USD190 million to Ghana.

In a presentation in November 2019, the Director of Research at the IEA, Dr John Kwakye, said the US had cancelled several programs because Ghana did not privatise its power companies.

“Now we found that there was some fraud with the deal and the government decided to cancel it. The US said we need to reinstate it. And they [Ghana government] said no. And they [U.S. government] said, okay, if you are not doing that then you are going to suffer the following consequences,” Dr. Kwakye said.

“The remaining amount of USD190 million has been cancelled. There is also the cancellation of the concessionaire of USD 580 million. Apart from the Ghana Compact, Ghana was to benefit from a regional compact amounting to 400 million dollars; that has also been cancelled. And then, there is also a World Bank facility which is also energy-related going into the bracket of USD500 million. That has also been cancelled. If you add this all up you are getting close to maybe USD2 billion that we are going to lose.”

Dr Kwakye went on to say that the American government’s decision “demonstrated the extent” to which they are willing to go to “punish a country that they consider to be recalcitrant or wayward.”

“Is that fair? Don’t African countries have the right to choose the management structure of their strategic industries? Does it always have to be imposed on us from outside?” he asked.

When Fact-Check Ghana added the figures put out by Dr John Kwakye of the IEA the figure stood at USD 1.67 billion, which is about 330 million shy of USD2 billion.

In conclusion, Ghana indeed lost a significant amount of money as a result of the cancellation of the PDS deal. According to the IEA, the amount was close to USD 2 billion. The amount was lost not directly because of the “scandal” but because the U.S. refused to make certain amounts of money available to Ghana after the government objected to demands to reinstate PDS or continue with the privatisation of ECG.

We drink from dam water and not pipe water. We drink water with sheep, goats and cows. We want proper water.

Free SHS has become a political game for govt – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of double standards in the Free Senior High School policy discourse.

Government appointees advocate for policy improvement, not review, but Mahama has criticized this stance.

Speaking at the launch of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools week, Mr Mahama condemned the government’s double standards. He points to their commitment to review the policy in an IMF document, contrasting with public statements.

Mahama criticizes the NPP’s lack of transparency and consistency in communication with the IMF, highlighting the disparity between promises and actions. Referring to the IMF agreement, he quotes the government’s pledge to review and rationalize free SHS in the educational sector.

He urges vigilance in understanding the term “review,” emphasizing the government’s use of the term in the IMF agreement.

He encouraged reading the Eduwatch report, especially on free SHS, revealing that over 196,000 qualified children didn’t enroll between 2021 and now.

The report states government spending of ¢5.8 billion, with parents covering 77% and the government 23%, justifying the need for a review.

“There’s hypocrisy in this thing about review. If you look at the IMF agreement that this government has signed, under point 47, page 76.

“This Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government signed an agreement with the IMF in January 2024. And they say that in the educational sector, we will review and rationalise the free SHS. These are their words, not my words.”

“And so when you hear all this politics about my understanding of the review means to abolish, in their own words, they are using review. Sometimes, you must watch our politics. I encourage all of you to get the Eduwatch report and read it, and it is about especially, the free SHS.

“It says that between 2021 to date, over 196,000 children did not take up their place in the free SHS. Even though they were posted and qualified, they didn’t go. We need to find out why they didn’t go.

“The report says that the total amount of money the government has spent on free SHS comes to about ¢5.8 billion. The proportion of the parents is about 77% to the government’s share of about 23%. That is why we must do a review,” he said.

I will send nurses abroad to reduce unemployment in Ghana – Mahama

The presidential hopeful of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to explore the option of exporting nurses as part of strategies to alleviate unemployment in Ghana.

During a visit to the Savannah Region, where he engaged with student nurses, the former president emphasized that deploying nurses abroad would be a more viable solution than having them unemployed within the country.

Mahama stressed the importance of ensuring gainful employment for nurses after completing their education.

To implement this, he proposed the establishment of a dedicated unit at the Ministry of Employment tasked with recruiting nurses who meet international standards for deployment.

“We want to increase the production of health workers and nurses, and we will employ them to work for us as many as we can, but at the same time, we will sign agreements with other countries where we can post our nurses to go and work on fixed contracts.

“So under the Ministry of Employment, we will have a unit that can recruit nurses and make sure they are of the standard that can work in international hospitals.”

He outlined the plan to have a specialized unit within the Ministry of Employment responsible for recruiting nurses and ensuring they meet the required standards for international hospital employment.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has reassured the public and stakeholders that it will reveal the electoral calendar for 2024 by the close of February, maintaining the original December 7 date for the general elections despite earlier discussions for a change.

Controversy has emerged over potential alterations to the 2024 election date, triggered by concerns from the Seventh Day Adventist Church regarding the election day coinciding with a Sabbath.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticized the EC for not prioritizing the release of the electoral calendar, labelling their focus on other matters as “unproductive endeavors.”

Addressing the concerns, Deputy Chair of the Commission, Dr. Bossman Asare, assured during an appearance before the Public Accounts Committee on Wednesday, February 21, that the EC will soon announce the electoral calendar for 2024.

  • Ghanaians will surely boot NPP out of government come December 7 – Sammy Gyamfi

Ghanaians will surely boot NPP out of government come December 7 – Sammy Gyamfi

The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has asserted the party’s confidence that Ghanaians will reject the ruling NPP government.

During a press conference titled the “Moment of Truth” series in Accra, Mr Gyamfi criticized the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government for spending USD$12 million on the failed Agyapa Royalties deal.

Mr Gyamfi stated, “The only way Ghanaians can get to the bottom of the litany of corruption acts and scandals involving officials of this government, including [Vice President] Bawumia himself, is for the good people of Ghana to resoundingly boot the NPP out of government on 7th December 2024.” He emphasized that voting the NPP out is “the surest bet of exacting genuine accountability” for corrupt acts in the current government.

The CEO of the Minerals Income Investment Fund, Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, informed the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that $12 million was spent on the Agyapa Royalties deal, which President Nana Akufo-Addo cancelled in 2021.

“My understanding, honourable chair, is that the Ministry of Finance procured the services of international consultancy and companies and financial institutions that have done this in the past and that the advice provided was what Ministry of Finance stood on”, Mr Koranteng told the committee on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

“We started with the Ministry of Finance and from the documents that we have, it is clear that the correct advice was provided on the set-up of a gold royalties company where the streaming of the royalties would benefit Ghana,” he added.

Mr Gyamfi promised that the next NDC government would investigate the Agyapa scandal, recover illegal payments, and ensure prosecution of all perpetrators.

The NDC also pledged to probe and prosecute those involved in the failed Agyapa Royalties deal when in office.

  • Bawumia cannot be trusted in corruption fight – NDC

Bawumia cannot be trusted in corruption fight – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has leveled accusations of corruption against the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

During a press conference held at the Adabraka party headquarters on February 19, 2024, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer, asserted that Ghanaians are enduring hardship due to corruption within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Mr Gyamfi specifically targeted Vice President Bawumia, who also serves as the NPP flagbearer, alleging his involvement in various scandals within the current administration.

The NDC contended that Dr. Bawumia lacks credibility in fighting corruption and is portrayed to Ghanaians as a “puppet” of President Akufo-Addo, with the primary objective of shielding wrongdoers and covering up the administration’s corruption.

Mr Gyamfi emphasized, “Today, Ghanaians are suffering because the meagre resources of the country which are supposed to be put to judicious use for the benefit of all Ghanaians, have been hijacked by the greedy, selfish and corrupt Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government and their accomplices in the ruling New Patriotic Party.

“…we are suffering because of the unprecedented corruption we are witnessing under Akufo-Addo and his corrupt protégé Bawumia. It’s as simple as that,” he said.

The party has therefore urged Ghanaians to reject Dr. Bawumia and the NPP in the elections and vote to return John Mahama and the NDC to restore accountability.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the press, the fact is, “appearance fee” merchant Bawumia is corrupt and cannot be trusted to fight corruption. The only way Ghanaians can get to the bottom of the litany of corrupt acts and scandals involving officials of this government including Bawumia himself, is for the good people of Ghana to resoundingly boot the NPP out of office on 7th December, 2024.

“H.E John Dramani Mahama has demonstrated both in government and out of government, that he detests corruption, and will never condone corruption, nor shield perpetrators of corrupt acts.

“He has stated clearly, that the days of the corruption clearing agent, will come to an end on January 7, 2025, when by the grace of God, he assumes office as President. He has said and demonstrated before, that the sword of the fight against corruption will cut both ways under his government, whether you are a member of his government or not.

“… call on the Ghanaian electorate not to allow President Akufo-Addo and his corrupt cabal of family and friends, to install as President, their puppet (Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia), whose sole mission is to cover-up the many ills of this remarkably corrupt administration and insulate wrongdoers including himself, from prosecution,” he added.

The NDC called on Ghanaians to reject Dr. Bawumia and the NPP in the upcoming elections, advocating for the return of John Mahama and the NDC to restore accountability.

Akufo-Addo may have problems, but Bawumia is far worse – Fifi Fiavi Kwetey

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has expressed a clear preference for the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over that of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

During an event at the Dome Kwabenya constituency where party flags were unveiled for the upcoming 2024 elections, Kwetey characterized the vice president as a symbol of deception and hypocrisy, labeling him “the biggest liar” in Ghana’s history.

“Bawumia is the worst of them all. The biggest liar, that person, if you joke and you think Nana Akufo-Addo was bad, then I am telling you he is going to be far worse.

“Nana Akufo-Addo may have all the problems, but trust me if you put Nana Akufo-Addo and Bawumia [together], I will choose Nana Akufo-Addo and leave Bawumia,” he asserted.

While acknowledging the flaws of President Akufo-Addo, Kwetey highlighted the president’s straightforward nature, emphasizing that Akufo-Addo doesn’t pretend.

“Nana Akufo-Addo may be desperate, he may be bad, but at least Nana Akufo-Addo does not pretend. If he doesn’t like you, he doesn’t like you, but this one is a snake who smiles with you but is dangerous.”

Kwetey urged NDC members to actively work towards preventing Bawumia from becoming president in the 2024 elections.

  • The youth are dying due to economic hardship – NDC

The youth are dying due to economic hardship – NDC

The Eastern Regional Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Richard Etornam Nyarko, has linked the rising number of premature deaths among the youth to the country’s economic downturn.

Nyarko highlighted that economic mismanagement has resulted in elevated unemployment rates, escalating costs of healthcare services and medications, and challenges affording nutritious meals. Some youth, facing economic hardships, have resorted to a practice termed “zero-one-zero,” wherein they eat only once a day.

He underscored the overwhelming economic pressure on the youth, emphasizing that many are succumbing to these challenges.

Mr Nyarko voiced his concerns, noting, “Social media is filled daily with news of the deaths of young people. Economic pressure is causing the demise of the youth. Unemployment is rampant, and some can’t afford even one square meal a day, resorting to Zero–one–zero. The youth struggle with rent payments, and inflation has driven medicine prices through the roof. Akufo Addo and Bawumia have destabilized the economy, leading to these avoidable deaths among the youth.”

These remarks came after Nyarko addressed NDC supporters following a Unity Walk in the Upper West Anymore constituency, as reported by Starr News.

Richard Nyarko, also known as Commander Bilibo, assured the youth that John Dramani Mahama’s proposed 24-hour economy policy would generate more job opportunities and foster economic prosperity.

He criticized the government for neglecting the $48-million Jute Factory at Adeiso, the largest in Africa, situated on a 12-acre land in the Upper West Akyem District, with a monthly capacity of 600,000 sacks and the potential to employ over 3000 workers.

Nyarko pledged that President John Mahama would ensure the completion and commissioning of the factory, saving millions spent annually on importing sacks.

He urged voters to support the NDC parliamentary candidate, Emmanuel Drah, to help the party regain the seat from the NPP.

Shirley Naana Ampem, the Eastern Regional Women’s Organizer, urged women in the country to take a keen interest in the upcoming elections to address issues such as corruption, hardship, and skyrocketing food prices that disproportionately affect them.

A belated reshuffle after the ship has sunk – Ablakwa on new ministerial appointment

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed confidence that the recent reshuffle in the Akufo-Addo administration will not bring about the desired changes, stating firmly that “the ship has already gone under.”

As part of this reshuffle, the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, was relieved of his duties and replaced by Karaga MP Mohammed Amin. Other notable figures, including the Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, and the Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey, have also been removed from their positions.

In a statement on platform X, Mr. Ablakwa expressed his belief that these changes will bring about no substantial alterations in the political landscape over the next nine months.

“A belated reshuffle after the ship has sunk and after the horses have bolted. Obviously, nothing will change in the next 9 months,” he added.

Furthermore, he indicated that Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will face accountability for his decisions if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerges victorious in the upcoming general elections.

Mr Ablakwa emphasized that, when the right moment arises, Ken Ofori-Atta will be held responsible for the unauthorized withdrawal of US$58 million for the National Cathedral project.

“A belated reshuffle after the ship has sunk and after the horses have bolted. Obviously, nothing will change in the next 9 months.

“As for Ken Ofori-Atta — at the right time he will answer for his US$58million illegal withdrawal for Akufo-Addo’s scandalous US$450million cathedral, the US$100million dubious SML contract & all the other atrocities.

“The day of reckoning is coming,” Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said.

I have not asked to be Mahama’s running mate though I’m interested to serve Ghana – Togbe Afede

The Asogli State Council has emphatically denied allegations suggesting that Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, has directed individuals to lobby for his selection as the running mate of National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Asogli State Council clarified that Togbe Afede XIV, while willing to serve Ghana in any capacity, has not instructed any person or group to advocate for his candidacy as the running mate.

The statement is in response to recent reports linking Togbe Afede to the possibility of being John Mahama’s running mate for the 2024 Presidential election.

The Asogli State explained that a group known as the “Change Makers Forum” recently approached Togbe Afede to consider joining President Mahama as his running mate.

According to the Council, Togbe Afede responded that the choice of a running mate is the prerogative of the flag bearer, and he would not reject any opportunity to serve the country.

The statement clarified that Togbe Afede did not mandate anyone or any group to lobby for his selection as a running mate.

The Asogli State Council apologized for any shock and embarrassment caused to the chiefs, kingmakers, the people of Asogli, and others.

“But Togbe has not mandated anybody or group to “lobby” for his choice as running mate,” it added.

It also emphasized the open-door policy of the Agbogbomefia’s office, encouraging direct communication on matters, concerns, or suggestions requiring attention.

“The office of the Agbogbomefia operates an open-door policy and is open to communication, feedback, and inquiries from all citizens and stakeholders. We encourage individuals or groups to reach out directly on any matters, concerns or suggestions that require attention,” it added.

  • Release calendar for 2024 elections immediately – NDC to EC

Release calendar for 2024 elections immediately – NDC to EC

The Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has expressed concern over the Electoral Commission’s delay in disclosing the Electoral Calendar, with only 298 days remaining until the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

Dr. Boamah called on the Commission to release the calendar and shares his concern on the matter through a post on his X platform.

In a related development, the NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, declared the party’s opposition to the Electoral Commission’s insistence on using the Ghana Card as the sole identification document for voter registration in the 2024 general elections.

Mahama conveys this stance to the Volta Region caucus of the NDC, emphasizing their readiness to resist such a decision.

The Electoral Commission defends the use of Ghana Cards, citing it as an effective means to address longstanding issues like minors and foreigners on the voter register.

Director of Electoral Services Dr. Serebour Quaicoe asserts that despite opposition, the Commission is convinced that utilizing Ghana Cards will significantly reduce the registration of minors and foreigners.

Dr. Quaicoe highlights the card’s inclusion of date of birth and citizenship information as crucial in tackling these issues.

“The NDC will offer the stiffest opposition to the Electoral Commission if it insists on the Ghana card as the sole form of identity in the registration of eligible voters,” he said.

“But how do we address the issue of registration of minors and the registration of foreigners?” he sought.

“The Electoral Commission thinks that one way of addressing the issue is to use the Ghana Card,” he stressed.

“There has been a lot of arguments and we are still battling it out and we are still insistent that let us use the Ghana Card so that it will address the issue of minors – because your date of birth is on the Card – and the citizenship, which is also on the Card.

“That is also a way to reduce drastically the registration of minors and foreigners.”

  • I am not that kind of person who promises and doesn’t deliver – Mahama to Ghanaians

I am not that kind of person who promises and doesn’t deliver – Mahama to Ghanaians

Presidential contender John Mahama from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emphasized his commitment to avoiding exaggerated promises for political gain, particularly steering clear of across-the-board salary increases.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Tamale during his ‘Building the Ghana We Want Together Tour,’ the former president stressed his preference for honesty in securing votes.

In addressing pre-tertiary teachers, Mahama stated, “I’ve said that the economy is in a big mess, so, I cannot promise everybody I’m going to increase salary and all that.”

He contrasted his approach with past promises made by President Nana Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party, stating, “I won’t be like those dishonest people who came to promise heaven that they will build factories in every district, they’ll build a dam in every village, I’m not that kind of person.”

While acknowledging the economic challenges, Mahama refrained from committing to a salary increase.

Instead, he acknowledged the difficulties faced by pre-tertiary teachers and proposed solutions, such as providing accommodation in schools to encourage more teachers to reside on campus.
