  • You should pray NPP forever retains power – Raymond Archer to McDan

You should pray NPP forever retains power – Raymond Archer to McDan

A businessman who had his multi-million dollar company demolished years ago, Raymond Archer, has offered an advice to the Board Chair of the Ghana Trade Fair Company, Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan.

Speaking to the media, he suggested that McDan should pray for his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to remain in power indefinitely.

Archer’s remark came after he was asked about McDan’s comment on Ghanaian youth being lazy.

In response, Archer highlighted his concerns about the dangers that might lie ahead if the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) were to win the 2024 general elections.

The businessman accuses the NPP of targeting businesses belonging to NDC supporters when in power, leading to their collapse.

He alleged that businesses of NPP supporters, including the McDan Group, will receive preferential treatment and thrive under the party’s rule.

“Now, he has the McDan Group…a whole lagoon; natural resource was seized and given to him and all those people who lived on that lagoon and I understand about 4,000, 5,000 livelihoods have been taken and given to one man…he is building his empire whiles trampling on other people is who they are and what they have always done,” he stated.

Mr Archer mentions the demolition of his companies, Universal Labels and Packaging Co. Ltd (UNIPACK) and Colour Planet Limited, during the redevelopment project at the Trade Fair Center. He claims that the demolition took place despite a court injunction, and he acquired the property legally, rendering the actions of the authorities unjustifiable.

In particular, Archer points to the case of McDan, whose group allegedly acquired a lagoon and displaced thousands of livelihoods to build their empire, while disregarding the impact on others.

Given this backdrop, Archer advises McDan to be cautious about the potential consequences if the NDC comes to power, implying that his business success may be influenced by the ruling party in office.

  • Female MPs seek funds to retain seats in Parliament

Female MPs seek funds to retain seats in Parliament

Some female Members of Parliament (MPs) are calling for financial assistance from various civil society organizations and stakeholders to effectively fulfill their constituency duties.

They believe that such support would contribute to retaining the majority of female MPs and promote gender parity in politics.

According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Ghana has a higher female population, accounting for 50.7 percent of the total population, while males constitute 49.3 percent.

However, within the 8th Parliament, both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have 20 female members each, totaling 40 out of 275 MPs.

During recent NDC primaries, three female MPs lost their bids to contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Expressing their concerns during a breakfast meeting organized by the Parliamentary Network Africa, Members of Parliament Patricia Appiagyei, Betty Krosbi Mensah, and Sheila Bartels called for financial support to retain their seats.

“It is very important that if we are working with the CSOs, wherever you are getting your funding from, it is critical that you appreciate the challenges we have in ensuring that we are servicing our constituencies and support us especially even during our primaries. What do you do to support and ensure that we retain our numbers and be able to even appreciate the numbers that we have in Parliament?”

Patricia Appiagyei stressed the importance of recognizing the challenges MPs face while serving their constituencies, especially during primaries, and urged the civil society organizations (CSOs) to offer necessary support.

Betty Krosbi Mensah, representing Afram Plains North, highlighted the limited resources available to MPs, making it difficult to effectively represent their constituencies.

Sheila Bartels, MP for Ablekuma North, emphasized that empowering women in Parliament would encourage more women to seek these positions.

She expressed concerns about women in politics not getting the same support as their male counterparts and urged for equitable financing opportunities.

The financial support sought by these female MPs aims to ensure they can continue their parliamentary roles effectively and pave the way for greater gender representation in Ghanaian politics.

  • Money in Cecilia Dapaah’s possession are from funeral donations – NPP communicator

Money in Cecilia Dapaah’s possession are from funeral donations – NPP communicator

A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, Clement Wilkinson, has made an audacious claim regarding the millions of dollars and pounds found in the home of the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah.

He suggested that the funds could be unaccounted donations received at recent funerals, including those of her brother and mother.

According to Wilkinson, the company that dredged the Odaw River might have contributed to the donations, as they received a significant amount for their services.

“The company which received $43 million dollars to dredge the Odaw river could have given Cecilia Dapaah $2 million dollars in funeral donation. You know Until the family meets to look at the entire donation, it would not be touched. It could be the reason the money was at her home”

Former Deputy Information Minister Felix Kwakye Fosu shared parts of the video on Twitter, expressing shock at the NPP communicator’s explanation.

The minister’s domestic staff is accused of stealing substantial amounts of money, jewelry, and clothing from her home.

Under pressure from various groups, including the minority, civil society organizations, and anti-corruption groups, the minister is still in her post, but calls for her resignation or removal by the President persist.

Cecilia Dapaah must be sacked for keeping over $1m at home – NDC MPs

Certain members of the Minority Members of Parliament have expressed their view that Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, acted unlawfully by keeping significant amounts of money in her house, which has allegedly been stolen by her house helps.

The Minister and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour, were reportedly robbed by two of their house helps, Patience Botwe and Sarah Agyei, between July and October 2022.

The house helps have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and five counts of stealing, involving large sums of money in different currencies and valuable items.

Three other individuals, including a plumber, a trader, and an unemployed person, have also been charged for dishonestly receiving stolen funds.

The accused allegedly used the stolen money to finance various purchases and properties.

In court, one of the house helps, Sarah Agyei, was granted bail, and the case has been scheduled for further investigation.

Speaking in parliament the Member of Parliament for Bole Bamboi, , Yussif Sulemana, called on President Akufo-Addo to immediately dismiss the Minister while investigations into the source and legitimacy of the money take place.

He emphasized that such actions would demonstrate a commitment to fighting corruption within the government.

The NDC MP for the Kumbungu constituency, Hamza Adam, also expressed shock at the situation, stating that if proven true, the Minister’s possession of such large sums of money at her residence would be unlawful.

Both MPs have demanded a thorough investigation to ascertain the origin of the funds and appropriate legal actions to be taken.

  • Minority MPs criticises government’s One Village, One Dam initiative

Minority MPs criticises government’s One Village, One Dam initiative

Following the recent revelations of construction lapses in the dams built under the ‘One Village, One Dam’ policy by the governing New Patriotic Party, (NPP) Minority MPs have strongly criticized the initiative, labelling it a mere political gimmick.

They argue that the policy was hastily implemented without proper consideration.

The criticism from the Minority MPs comes in the wake of JoyNews’ documentary, titled ‘Thirsty Dams,’ which exposed the poor condition of the dams constructed during the Akufo-Addo government’s tenure.

Among those expressing their concerns was Samson Ahi, the NDC MP for Bodi Constituency in the Western North Region.

According to Mr. Ahi, the ‘One Village, One Dam’ policy lacked careful planning and was primarily used as a propaganda tool to deceive the Ghanaian public.

He pointed out that despite the government’s claims of having built dams, many of them were unable to retain water even during the rainy season, indicating poor execution.

Furthermore, the MPs accused the NPP government of prioritizing fulfilling a manifesto promise over the well-being of the communities affected by the dams. They emphasized that the policy’s rushed implementation led to subpar construction, causing ongoing challenges with water supply in those areas.

Henry Yiadom Boakye, the NDC MP for Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region, echoed these concerns, highlighting the failure of the dams to deliver on their promised benefits.

He lamented that despite significant financial investments exceeding 200 million, the project failed to provide any meaningful returns or benefits to the communities.

The MPs argued that such resources could have been better utilized in other sectors like education, instead of being wasted on a project that did not meet its intended objectives.

They concluded that the evidence presented in the documentary reinforces their initial opposition to the ‘One Village, One Dam’ policy and calls for a more responsible approach to infrastructure development in the future.

  • NPP flagbearer race: Petition to centralise Special Delegates Conference dismissed

NPP flagbearer race: Petition to centralise Special Delegates Conference dismissed

On Thursday, July 20, the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) held a crucial meeting at the Alisa Hotel and unanimously rejected a petition from nine aspirants seeking a centralized venue for the party’s Special Delegates Conference.

The petitioners wanted the number of presidential aspirants, currently scheduled for Saturday, August 26, to be reduced to a central location.

The National Council cited the party’s constitution and a precedent set in 2014 as crucial factors that needed to be respected.

The General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong, addressed journalists and announced that the NPP would proceed with its initially planned decentralization for the election.

The NPP’s constitution states that if there are more than five aspirants after the nomination and vetting process, a special delegates college should be held to reduce the number of candidates to five. The vetting committee had submitted their recommendations to the National Council, which was unanimously approved.

The nine flagbearer hopefuls, excluding Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, argued that a centralized election would be more efficient and transparent. They were not in favor of the plan to limit the voting to only 900 delegates at the regional level.

Despite their arguments, the National Council, which is the second highest decision-making body of the party, did not support their petition. As a result, the NPP will proceed with its plan to trim the list of presidential aspirants from ten to five on August 26, in accordance with its constitution.

Before the election, the party stated that a new register would be necessary to remove the names of delegates who have passed away or are no longer available to participate. General Secretary Justin Koduah assured that the new register would be finalized by the end of the week, and it would comprise between 900 and 1,000 delegates. This registration process aims to ensure a fair and accurate electoral college for the special delegates’ election.

  • NPP to compile new register for special delegates’ congress

NPP to compile new register for special delegates’ congress

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing a new register for its August 26th special delegates’ congress.

The party is creating this new register because some of the delegates have passed away.

According to the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong Koduah, the compilation is in its final stages. The special electoral college will consist of around 900 to 1000 delegates.

He explained, “Some of the founding members have died, so we have to take their names out. We also have to look at past national officers. I am sure before the week ends we should have the final list for the special delegates’ election.”

Furthermore, the NPP’s national executive council has instructed all regional executives to stop charging unapproved fees from parliamentary aspirants.

While recognizing the positive intentions, the party emphasized that only the national executive committee has the authority to issue such charges.

The regional committees were directed to halt these charges immediately and await approval from the National Executive Committee as per the Party’s constitution.

“While the national executive body acknowledges and appreciates the otherwise good intentions behind these decisions, you are hereby reminded that directives governing the conduct of elections of the Party can only be issued by the National Executive Committee, the appropriate body constitutionally mandated to do so.

“Accordingly, all Regional Executive Committees are, by this letter, directed to cease forthwith, the issuance of any directives on the conduct of parliamentary primaries unless and until same have been approved by the National Executive Committee in accordance with the Constitution of the Party.”

  • Bawumia’s campaign team unveiled

    Bawumia’s campaign team unveiled

A former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, is leading Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign for the 2024 general election to secure the party’s flagbearer position.

Given his impressive track record in political organisation and mobilisation, Awuku’s appointment comes as no surprise. He played crucial roles in helping the party win power as National Youth Organiser in 2016 and retain power in 2020 as National Organiser.

Nicknamed “Capo” for his political sagacity, Awuku is a prominent figure within the NPP.

Additionally, Nana Akomea, the Managing Director of Intercity STC Coaches Limited (STC), has taken on the role of Communications Director for Dr Bawumia’s campaign. As a seasoned communicator, Akomea brings extensive experience in effectively conveying political messages to the public.

The appointments of Awuku and Akomea highlight the emphasis on effective communication strategies in Bawumia’s campaign. Their proven capabilities and expertise are expected to bolster Bawumia’s chances of securing the NPP’s nomination as the flagbearer and winning the 2024 general elections.

The Vice President is also expected to announce other key players like Frederick Opare-Ansah and Nii Adjei Sowah to strengthen the team.

Dr Bawumia’s choice of Awuku and Akomea reflects his determination to lead the party to victory in the upcoming elections as the race for the NPP flagbearer intensifies.

No Islamic group in Nigeria is funding Bawumia’s campaign – Campaign Team insists

The campaign team of Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has disputed reports that a Nigerian Islamic organisation is supporting his campaign.

The claims were made public by a Nigerian journalist named David Humdeyin, who claimed that a group called ACF was sending money to Ghana to assist the Vice President’s campaign.

However, Mr. Bawumia’s campaign’s Communications Directorate stated in a statement that the stories are incorrect and should be ignored.

    Below is the full statement.

Allegations of Islamic Funding for the Bawumia Campaign is False

The attention of the Bawumia Campaign Team has been drawn to a post by one David Humdeyin, a journalist in Nigeria, that the Bawumia Campaign is being funded by some Islamic group in Nigeria called the ACF.

We notice that the same narrative has been copied by some persons and groups in Ghana on social media. This narrative is obviously false, fabricated, and only serves the propaganda purposes of its promoters.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Bawumia Campaign has no funding or any linkage with any Islamic group in Nigeria or anywhere else.

We also note that the said David Humdeyin has demonstrated a penchant for making similar claims against some persons and groups in Nigeria without any basis whatsoever

The Bawumia Campaign is focused and will not be distracted by such vain untruths.

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been very diligent and transparent from his days as a scholar, banker, and politician throughout his life and will not depart from these now and forever.

NPP regional executives accused of charging parliamentary aspirants unapproved fees

The New Patriotic Party‘s (NPP) national executive council has accused regional executives of charging prohibited fees to parliamentary contenders.

According to a statement signed by the party’s general secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, while the intentions of the regional executives may be positive, it is only the national executive of the party that can direct such charges and has thus called on them to cease such charges with immediate effect.

“While the national executive body acknowledges and appreciates the otherwise good intentions behind these decisions, you are hereby reminded that directives governing the conduct of elections of the Party can only be issued by the National Executive Committee, the appropriate body constitutionally mandated to do so.

  • NPP MPs who have blasted Ken Agyapong for attacking the party

NPP MPs who have blasted Ken Agyapong for attacking the party

MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has received criticism for his recent comments targeting Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia concerning Ghana’s economic challenges.

Agyapong is among nine contenders vying for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership.

Bawumia, considered the primary frontrunner, enjoys widespread support from numerous MPs who have been accompanying him on campaign trails nationwide.

Four pro-Bawumia MPs responded to Kennedy Agyapong’s criticism, deeming it baseless and unjustified, as the economic challenges were a result of external factors.

Currently, Ghana is under an International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, aiming to secure US$3 billion over three years. The initial tranche of US$600 million was disbursed earlier this year, with more tranches scheduled for release.

    1. Andrew Egyapa Mercer, MP for Sekondi

Egyapa-Mercer emphasized that any assessment of the Vice President’s performance should begin from 2017 and 2018 until the present.

He firmly stated that the economic downturn was influenced by global factors beyond the Vice President’s control, absolving him of responsibility for the country’s economic challenges.

“Dr Bawumia was superintending over an economy that was growing 7 percent on average in 2017, 2018, and 2019 and so in 2020 what happened? They recognize the issues that have taken us to where we are that are not attributed to Bawumia, that is not to say that he is reneging on his duties.

“He did not bring covid and if you think covid did not have an impact on the economy, that is your beef. He stands tall and he is the one to help us break the 8,” the Deputy Energy Minister said.

    2. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, MP for Takoradi

Darko-Mensah firmly asserted that the economic downturn was primarily caused by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. He pointed out that this fact has been confirmed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is currently providing financial assistance to Ghana through a bailout program.

“..we were all in the country when COVID broke. Were you the one who manufactured COVID? Even the IMF who are giving us a bailout said we (NPP) did not create the problem, as our economic challenges are as a result of COVID,” he stressed.

In addition, Darko-Mensah highlighted take-or-pay energy-sector contracts signed during the previous government’s tenure as a significant contributor to the economic challenges.

He questioned the connection between these contracts and the decision made by Dr. Bawumia, himself, or Ken Ofori-Atta to seek assistance from the IMF. Darko-Mensah implied that these contracts were separate issues from the necessity of seeking IMF support.

    3. Kofi Amankwa-Manu, Atwima-Kwanwoma Constituency

Amankwa-Manu, from the Atwima-Kwanwoma Constituency, stated that all NPP MPs, including Kennedy Agyapong, who voted in favor of various revenue measures to secure the bailout deal, cannot now criticize Bawumia for the economic situation as he is not an MP.

In response to Kennedy Agyapong’s critique of Bawumia’s economic management, Amankwa-Manu posed a rhetorical question in an interview with Oyerepa TV: “If you were against our IMF approach, wouldn’t you have voted against it?” He implied that Agyapong, having supported the IMF approach, cannot now shift blame onto Bawumia.

“But if you were part of the decision and you claim that because of an internal election (NPP flagbearership race), now that we have voted and agreed on the issue, it is now that some people want to walk back their steps? Are we in Parliament with Bawumia?” he quizzed.

“I don’t belong to that school of thought, what is not good for me, I will strictly state so from the onset. He cannot absolve himself now having voted for the E-Levy, an IMF conditionality. He has no moral right to absolve himself having gone with the team to agree on the issue,” he added.

  • Alan Cash donates 500 bags for construction of medical facility at Koforidua

A presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kyerematen, has generously donated 500 bags of cement to support the construction of a medical facility for the Anglican Diocese of Koforidua.

The church expressed gratitude for his selfless gesture, acknowledging it as a demonstration of his non-selfishness.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude for your unselfish contribution to the construction of our Medical Facility in Koforidua. Your donation of 500 bags of cement is very important to us. It will help us to commence the construction of our medical facility.

“May this letter serve as a receipt of the 500 bags of cement you donated to us for which we are most grateful,” the letter said.

The letter, dated July 12, 2023, further stated that Alan Kyerematen, in addition to being a presidential candidate, is also a valued member of the Anglican Communion.

It is ridiculous to make dual citizenship a crime – Economist

The former president John Dramani Mahama‘s plan to change the constitution to permit people with dual citizenship to hold certain positions in Ghana has the support of famous economist Kwame Pianim.

According to Mr. Pianim in an interview with the media, the constitution needs to be changed to allow people with the necessary expertise to contribute their fair share to the advancement of the nation.

He called it “ridiculous” that dual citizens of Ghana are barred from serving their country under the 1992 Constitution’s present provisions.

“It is ridiculous that when you have a Green Card, you cannot occupy political office, the only thing that makes sense is the person not becoming president because it is only the president that signs agreements and so why are we trying to fly on one wing when we can fly on two wings?”

In addition, Mr. Pianim forecast that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will have a challenging election in 2024.

He said that the government’s efforts to revive the faltering economy will be incredibly challenging.

“2024 is going to be difficult and that is why I implore the young people who are brave and prepared to take the challenge to get the economy back to do so. It is going to be difficult to get the economy back.”

You are causing financial loss to the state for boycotting Parliamentary sittings – PNC to Minority

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has expressed criticism towards the Minority’s decision to boycott parliamentary sittings as a means of showing support for their colleagues who are currently on trial.

The PNC argues that this boycott is resulting in financial losses for the state.

The NDC Minority in Parliament chose to abstain from Thursday’s session to accompany and show solidarity with two Caucus members, namely Minority Leader Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and MP for Assin North Hon. James Gyakye Quayson.

The individuals are scheduled to appear in court today, facing ongoing prosecutions from the Attorney-General and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Government.

In a statement signed by Minority Chief Whip, Kwame Governs Agbodza, it was stated that “The Minority stands united with our colleagues and, therefore, will be unable to carry out the business of the house today.”

However, the PNC disagrees with this decision. In a statement dated July 7, 2023, PNC General Secretary Janet Asana Nabla acknowledges the Minority’s right to express support for their fellow MP during these challenging times in the Legislature.

“However, the decision to boycott sitting due to criminal charges instituted by the republic against their colleague is worrying. An opposition party which professes to believe in the rule of law is expected to have faith in the legal system of our nation where they held the reins of power some few years ago.

“The Minority Members in Parliament at this moment is causing financial loss to the state by abandoning their Parliamentary business to go to court to protest for their colleague. For how long will the Minority in Parliament continue this boycott of parliamentary sitting at the expense of the tax payer? the General Secretary asked.

  • NPP ends presidential aspirants vetting today

NPP ends presidential aspirants vetting today

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is in the final stages of its vetting process for presidential aspirants.

The last candidate to be vetted today, Thursday, July 6, is a former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh.

He is making another attempt at securing the NPP flagbearership after an unsuccessful bid in 2014.

The vetting process has already included prominent figures such as Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, former Minister of Food and Agric Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, former General Secretary of NPP Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former MP for Offinso North Dr. Kofi Konada Apraku, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, and Kojo Opoku.

Each of these aspirants has presented their vision for both the NPP and the country as a whole, outlining their plans and goals if elected as the NPP flagbearer.

This primary election marks the second attempt for some of these candidates in their pursuit of leading the party.

The NPP members and supporters will now evaluate the candidates’ visions and proposals before making their decision on who will become the NPP flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.
According to Evans Nimako, Secretary to the Vetting Committee, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will carefully consider the concerns raised by all the aspirants before the elections.

“They raised a number of issues during the process. They raised the issue of fairness, and transparency of the process and I can assure you that looking at the calibre of people who constitute this kind of committee, they can be assured that the whole process will be conducted in a fair, free and transparent manner. That is assured,” Evans Nimako stated.

The party started its vetting on Monday, July 3.

  • NPP executives to receive salaries, Social Security benefits under Alan’s leadership

NPP executives to receive salaries, Social Security benefits under Alan’s leadership

Presidential aspirant Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that when voted into power, national executives of the party will receive salaries and social security benefits.

He made this announcement at the beginning of his tour of the Greater Accra Region.

In an innovative approach to internal party elections, Alan engaged with delegates from three constituencies in an open mini durbar at the Suu Astro Turf in the Ablekuma Central constituency. Delegates from Ablekuma South and North also attended the durbar. This move addresses the concern of NPP executives, members, and supporters who have felt neglected by the party and its structures while in power.

Alan Kyerematen believes it is time for the hardworking party members to reap the benefits of their dedication, which has contributed to the NPP’s success in national elections. As a result, he has pledged to provide salaries and social security for party executives.

This approach reflects Alan’s determination to run the party as a disciplined corporate entity, ensuring that members are rewarded for their efforts instead of treating party positions as thankless sacrifices.

Furthermore, the concept of a peoples’ assembly showcased the participatory governance that Ghanaians can expect under an Alan Kyerematen administration.

During the first leg of his Greater Accra tour, Alan was accompanied by party stalwarts such as former Attorney General Ayikoi Otoo, Minister of Railway and Rail Transport Peter Amewu, NPP chairpersons from the three Ablekuma constituencies, and Hopeson Adorye, among others.

  • Nominations for NPP primaries in orphan constituencies to be opened on July 11

Nominations for NPP primaries in orphan constituencies to be opened on July 11

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that nominations for parliamentary primaries in constituencies where the party has no parliamentary representation, known as orphan constituencies, will commence on July 11, 2023.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, released a statement in Accra on Wednesday, confirming that this decision was endorsed during the Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council meetings on April 3, 2023.

According to Mr. Frimpong, the nomination period will conclude on August 10, 2023, with the elections scheduled to take place between September 23, 2023, and December 2, 2023, spanning several Saturdays.

“Nomination forms could be obtained at a non-refundable application fee of GH¢3,000.00 in a bankers draft payable to the NPP national headquarters in Accra,” he added.

Mr. Frimpong also stated that if an aspiring parliamentary candidate is unable to obtain the nomination form at the constituency level, they have the option to obtain it through alternative means.

They can appeal to the regional or national secretariat to acquire the form or download it from the Party’s website, www.newpatrioticparty.org, upon payment of a fee. This provision ensures that candidates have access to the nomination forms regardless of any difficulties faced at the constituency level.

“To successfully file a nomination, an aspiring parliamentary candidate must submit a non-refundable filing fee of GHS35,000 in a bankers draft payable to the NPP national headquarters in Accra,” he added.

The NPP General Secretary added that aspirant parliamentary candidates will receive a 50% rebate of the filing fees in order to encourage greater representation of women, young people, and people with disabilities (PWDs) in higher political offices.

“This means they will be required to pay a non-refundable filing fee of GHS17,500.00,” he added.

Mr Frimpong stressed that the party’s leadership will not deny any parliamentary candidate access to purchase the nomination forms.

  • The best candidate to lead NPP is Alan Kyerematen – Mpraeso MP

The best candidate to lead NPP is Alan Kyerematen – Mpraeso MP

The Mpraeso Member of Parliament (MP) has expressed support for Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, the former Trade Minister, as the most suitable candidate to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as its flagbearer in the 2024 election.

The MP, Davis Ansah Opoku, emphasized that Kyerematen has made significant sacrifices for the party and deserves recognition and reward.

Opoku further argued that the NPP needs a fresh and charismatic leader to effectively challenge the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) John Dramani Mahama.

He believes that a new face would enhance the party’s chances of defeating their political opponents.

“I am campaigning for Alan Kyeremanten. I strongly believe that he’s the best person to lead. There’s one thing that we all must know in politics; people’s sacrifices must be rewarded.

“In 2007, when this party was at the crossroads in Legon, Alan singlehandedly took a decision and said that he was not going to contest a second round of the election and that he would allow his elder brother, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to contest. That was the highest or the height of a political sacrifice that I’ve seen.

“So for me, I feel that people have served. John Mahama has done eight years at the presidency, Dr. Bawumia has done eight years at the presidency and there’s a need for a new face for Ghanaians.

“For me, I believe that if the NPP were to go into the next election with a new face against John Mahama who has served eight years at the presidency, we’ll be able to defeat John Mahama easily,” he said on JoyNews’ AM show on Tuesday.

A broader conversation is needed on the matter – Ayikoi Otoo on Quayson’s case

Former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, has stated that a broader conversation is necessary to address the criminal case involving ,the Member of Parliament-elect for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson.

Otoo, who also served as an ambassador to Canada, emphasized the political wisdom of entering a nolle prosequi in this case.

He highlighted the importance of considering the broader public sentiment and the potential reaction of the people of Assin North, particularly for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, speaking to the media on Monday July 4, Otoo clarified that the decision to enter a nolle prosequi cannot be made solely by the Attorney-General, unless it is endorsed by the cabinet.

“It will be a good thing to enter a nolle prosequi and stop all this to show more maturity but you cannot as an Attorney-General do it on your own, you are not independent, you are part of a whole.

“The Attorney-General is bound by cabinet decision and cabinet secrecy even if he disagrees, once it has been taken, you are bound,” he said.

“So, if you ask me, what I will tell you is that there is the need for some negotiation, a broader conversation on the matter,” he stressed.

The former Attorney-General responded to recent statements made by the Dormaahene regarding the discontinuation of the Gyakye Quayson trial in an Accra High Court. The A-G, Godfred Yeboah Dame, swiftly refuted the Dormaahene’s comments.

James Quayson pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including deceit of a public officer, forgery of travel documents, making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office. These charges stem from his alleged dual citizenship during his participation in the 2020 elections.

The Accra High Court mandated a daily trial, a ruling that has been challenged by Quayson’s legal team in the Court of Appeal.

NDC’s win in Assin North by-election a sign of victory in 2024 election – Dr Kojo Asante

The Director of Programmes and Policy Engagement at CDD-Ghana, Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante, has stated that the recent victory of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Assin North Constituency by-election has boosted the party’s confidence for the 2024 general election.

Dr. Asante believes that the party’s victory provides them with a sense of competitiveness as they approach the upcoming general elections.

“I think we are a long way from December 07, 2024. So, there are still many things to resolve. The NPP’s own internal party primaries have to be resolved to know who’s their candidate. That would help assess the strength of the candidates going into the election.

“For me, this [Assin North] election does give the NDC some more confidence about its own sense of competitiveness going into the 2024 election,” he said.

Dr. Asante suggests that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should learn from its mistakes in the by-election.

He emphasized the need for the party to reassess its approach to utilizing the advantages of being in power, warning against creating impunity among voters as allegedly witnessed in Assin North, as it could have negative consequences.

Regarding the issue of vote-buying during elections, Dr. Asante proposed conducting undercover investigations to expose those involved.

He believes that relying solely on individuals voluntarily reporting such cases would be challenging, making it necessary to take proactive measures to address the issue.

“I’ve tried to press on the Special Prosecutor who is charged with dealing with politically exposed persons to get into the space because I really think it’s not just about vote-buying. I think it’s vote selling and vote-buying.

“So, I think this example has to be set in terms of even the citizens who are also receiving the money. But I think the tactics should also include undercover because you’re not going to really get people coming forward to say we’re receiving cash,” he added.

A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has successfully secured a tractor manufacturing plant deal for Ghana, aiming to enhance mechanized farming and promote agricultural growth.

The deal is expected to benefit other countries in the West African sub-region as well.

Discussions between Dr. Akoto and Hattat Traktör directors during his visit to Turkey focused on creating an enabling environment for the business, policy formulation, and accessibility and affordability issues.

Dr. Akoto, emphasizing Africa’s potential as an investment destination, highlighted the benefits of establishing the manufacturing plant in Ghana, including access to the ECOWAS community market.

The directors of Hattat Traktör plan to visit Ghana to present their proposal officially to the government. Hattat Traktör, established in 1998, produces tractor models with advanced technology and has received awards for its designs and performance.

Dr. Akoto, prioritizing the agricultural sector, believes public funding and mechanized farming can drive Ghana’s economic development.

The growth of mechanization in Ghana’s agricultural sector has been relatively low, and efforts to modernize and increase mechanization are crucial for sustainable productivity.

The potential establishment of the Hattat Traktör assembling plant in Ghana would significantly contribute to mechanized farming, bolstering food security in the country and the ECOWAS community at large.

Christiana Awuni, a popular Ghanaian movie star, has disclosed that she was subjected to forceful coercion to endorse the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 elections.

Speaking in a video seen by MyNewsGh.com’s Amansan Krakye, the actress said producers and directors warned to sideline her if she doesn’t comply.

“In 2016 some people coerced us forcefully to endorse NPP unwillingly which were our producers and movie directors,” she disclosed.

So we had to comply and follow their instructions because that’s the only job we do to feed ourselves and apart from acting we don’t have another job doing if they don’t cast us in their movies anymore.

Asked whether the decision has influenced positive results and also about the whereabouts of the said producers, she said,

“We had to force ourselves to do it by all means but now we don’t know the whereabouts of those producers and now we don’t care whatever they decide to do next.

“Even if the movie directors and producers want they can now go burn the sea it doesn’t bother us any longer because we’re now on our own going forward,” she said

MP escapes mob attack at Abuakwa Sepase

Member of Parliament (MP) for Atwima Nwabiagya South constituency, Emmanuel Adjei Anhwere swerved a mob attack at Abuakwa Sepase on Friday, June 23.

The attack is said to be fueled by the death of a lotto seller who was swept away by flood water.

The MP upon hearing of the demise of the man, came to the scene to inspect the collapsed bridge which caused the death of the death.

However, angry constituents upon seeing their MP started throwing stones at him in a protest.

It took timely intervention of the Police from Abuakwa district command to control the angry crowd who wanted to attack the lawmaker and, in the process, whisk him away to safety.

The angry constituent while protesting described the soft-spoken MP with unprintable words while also threatening to vote against him and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for taking their loyalty to the party for granted.

The MP, Emmanuel Adjei Anhwere blamed the unfortunate flooding development in his Abuakwa and its environs on the absence of the contractor responsible for constructing bridge in the area.
He said, his constituents have every right to protest against him because of the problems flood waters are exposing them to.

This is the second time the MP has been chased out of his constituency in Ashanti region over deplorable road network in the farming Constituency.

The first incident occurred on was Wednesday (August 24, 2022) where he was chased out with machete by constituents who were unhappy with the poor road infrastructure in the area.

The Ashanti Regional Dean of Ashanti legislators was touring parts of the constituency when the angry youth descended on him.
Constituents at Kobeng, Seidi and Amanchia, wielding machete threatened the MP and forced him to flee the scene.

The angry constituent said killing the MP will lead to a by-election which will address majority of their developmental needs in the constituency as done in Sekyere Kumawu and Assin North Constituencies.

I will ruthlessly deal with corrupt individuals in my administration – Ken Agyapong

In his bid to become the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and potentially the President of Ghana, Kennedy Agyapong has pledged to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption and any activities related to corruption.

That, he said, would ensure accountability from public office holders and deliver the desired development for Ghanaians.

“I believe in accountability. If God gives me the nod, he (pointing at his Campaign Manager) will be the Chief of Staff. Listen to me very carefully, one strike and he is out. Ghana first, he comes second,” he said.

“If he does anything against this country, I will fire him. That is the only way we can move this country forward. So, can you imagine if I have fired my Chief of Staff. The rest would sit up because even if the Chief of Staff has been fired, what about me the director, what about me the manager? It trickles down and we become discipline.”

Mr Agyapong made the remarks after filing his nomination forms to contest the flagbearership of the NPP, in Accra.

The MP also mentioned creation of job opportunities for the teeming youth if elected as flagbearer of the Party and ultimately, the president as his priority.

He said Ghana had abundant natural resource such as arable land which supported agriculture.

“I have visited about 180 constituencies and have come to realise that we as politicians have done a disservice to the nation. With the arable lands, seas, rivers that God has given to us, we are endowed with so many minerals, a lot of opportunities in this country. But, everywhere you go, especially Volta Region, the resources are untapped. And I want Ghanaians to give the opportunity and challenge me that, I will make sure I turn the fortune of this country around, he said.

“I don’t believe in theory. I am a pragmatic person, I believe in practical things. What I saw in Volta Region, what I saw in Afram Plains area and Northern Region, believe me that we can change this country.”

Mr Agyapong stressed that Ghana’s inflation and interest rate woes where attributable to the country’s inability to produce and export more to earn .

He said, going forward, Ghana must pursue rigorous agro-processing policies to add more value to its raw materials to boost its foreign exchange earning.

“I don’t believe in theory. Your inflation will be stable only when you have been able to stabilize prices, interest rate will be stable only when we stabilize our prices here and especially when our export exceeds import and we have excess of the foreign currency, that is when we can stabilize this country.

“It is not only book. Let’s get down to work,” he added.

He called for a change in the mindset of Ghanaians which made them feel inferior to citizens of other countries, stressing that, the time had come for them to be patriotic and put the country first.

He also urged delegates and Ghanaians at large, to “have faith in me that there is a new dawn that is going to change this country.”

The NPP opened nomination for its presidential primary May 26, 2023.

I am the ideal candidate to lead NPP in 2024 — Dr Apraku

A flag bearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, asserts that his training, experience, and expertise in finance, economics, management, and policy decision-making make him the ideal candidate to lead the NPP to success in the 2024 general election.

He said the tremendous experience he gained when he served with the United Nations (UN) mission to Croatia after it broke out of the then Yugoslavia, as staff in charge of Macroeconomics in rebuilding that country and also in South Africa when that country emerged from the apartheid system and was preparing to hold its first election, made him the best to lead the party in 2024.

He further stated that his practical experience in Parliament when the NPP was in opposition and government, on issues of finance and economics, as well as being the ranking member on the Finance Committee of Parliament and later as the Minister of Trade and Industry, also made him the best person to lead the party.

“I believe I am the best person to lead the NPP in 2024 to victory, based on the training and experience I have acquired over the years,” the NPP flag bearer hopeful stated.

    Filing of nomination

Dr Apraku, who was also a member of the second, third and fourth Parliament of the Fourth Republic for the Offinso North Constituency in the Ashanti Region, said this in an interview with the Daily Graphic after successfully filing his nomination forms last Monday (June 19) to contest the NPP flagbearership.

The flag bearer hopeful, who was at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra last Monday to submit his nomination, was asked by the party’s elections committee to complete his documents, and did so and re-submitted it later in the afternoon to the committee.

However, members of the team revealed that certain documents such as his CV and personal contributions to the party were not included in the nomination document submitted.

Dr Apraku, who holds a Doctoral Degree in Economics and Finance, said he was in the race to lead the party to victory in the 2024 general election and believed the delegates of the party would give him the nod to lead the party based on his experience and service to the party, both in opposition and in government.

Dr Apraku becomes the fifth presidential aspirant to file his forms as of Monday, June 19, 2023, since the party opened nominations for the presidential primary on May 26, which is expected to end on June 24, 2023.

A candidate in the New Patriotic Party‘s (NPP) presidential primary race, Eric Sekyi Nketia, has dropped out of the contest due to what he claims to be unjust treatment meted out to him.

The senior lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, in April this year declared his intentions to contest the NPP Presidential Primaries and lead the party into the 2024 election.

Eric Sekyi Nketia says on three different occasions he was not allowed to pick forms at the party headquarters though the party had opened nominations.

He says a petition to the General Secretary and the Chairman of the National Council on the treatment meted out to him has proven futile.

He is therefore withdrawing from the race to allow others to contest.

Contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer-ship, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has submitted his nomination forms at the party headquarters on Monday, June 19, 2023.

He appealed to party members to join forces to help ‘Break the 8’ in the December 2024 election.

He said the party needed unity and inclusiveness to win the election.

“You cannot break the 8 with half an egg, It has to be the full egg and everybody in this party is important in this respect, especially the delegates who have been given the constitutional powers to choose a flagbearer of this party,” he said.

He also asked the delegates to vote for him as the best candidate to lead the party to victory.

“I hope that at the end of the day, we will be given the opportunity for delegates to listen to us and make the right choice so that this party can retain power come 2024.”

Meanwhile, Dr Akoto said he was not impressed by the crowds that accompanied his competitors’ filing of nomination forms.

He said he decided to submit his forms with only core members of his campaign team, rather than hiring supporters.

“Let me say here that everybody who has come here including representatives of farmers, are here on their own accord. You cannot see any bused crowd, or any big commercial vehicle bringing people to come and support.

“People have come on their own volition and own conviction that my candidature will be good for the people of Ghana and the NPP, and I am very grateful.”, he said.

A former Energy Minister and a contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer-ship race, Boakye Agyarko, has pledged to help the party achieve a long-term dominance of Ghanaian politics for the next 40 years.

He made this remark today, 19 June 2023, as he filed his nomination at the party office in the presence of enthusiastic NPP supporters.

He said the party’s goal was not only to break the eight-year cycle of alternating power with the opposition, but to transform the country with a sustained governance.

“We have to motivate you; we have to prepare you. We have to make you eager to fight for this party in 2024. If we do that, then we are assured of 2024. I am interested in the party retaining power for the next 40 years, not just breaking the eight. Being in power for the next 40 years is the only way we are going to change this country. In the next 40 years, it is the only way we can change the country,” he stated.

The flagbearer hopeful, therefore, urged the members and supporters to work hard to ensure that the party’s victory in the upcoming election and beyond is secured.

“It is going to depend on you, forty years I wouldn’t be here, but the party will, and we must build a strong party where you are comfortable and most importantly where you will receive the reward of your hard work,” he added.

I have even raised the matter at the national council.

“So long as the rules are clear, so long as there is total fairness, so long as we are all tempered or measured, I believe that we would have a very peaceful contest. But please do not hold yourself aloof from the entire process.”

Responding to Agyarko’s plea, Evans Nimako, the Director of Elections of the NPP, urged him to report any instances of election rule violations by the aspirants to the appropriate committees.

Following the submission of his presidential nomination form at the party headquarters in Accra on Friday, June 16, Dr. Bawumia addressed enthusiastic party supporters and promised to change the fortunes of the country under his presidency.

He expressed his intent to build upon the strong foundation laid by the current administration led by President Akufo-Addo.

“I believe that it is time to move Ghana to the next level by building on the foundations we have put in place so far…Together with you, I want to see a Ghana where we leverage technology, data and systems for inclusive economic growth. I want to make Ghana the digital hub of Africa. I want us to bridge the digital divide and apply digital technology and artificial intelligence for the transformation of healthcare, education, and public service delivery amongst others”.

He further emphasized his unwavering dedication to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Ghana throughout his 22-year journey, spanning from his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana during the Kufuor era to the present government.

“Over the last 22 years, I have worked hard with you for the NPP and for Ghana from during the Kufuor era as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, through our years in opposition and now in government.

“During this period, I have sacrificed for the party, I have defended the party in good times and in challenging times, I have never wavered nor slacked. Never! and I have built a solid track record of performance as Vice President with an unflinching loyalty to our party and government through rain or shine,” he added.

Supporters of Bawumia throng NPP headquarters as he files nomination forms

Supporters of Bawumia have thronged the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) headquarters in Asylum Down as he files his nomination forms today, Friday June 16, 2023.

Key party officials, including former Vice Chairman Fred Oware and former National Organiser Sammy Awuku, collected the forms on behalf of Dr Bawumia earlier last month.

Alan Kyerematen, one of the key contenders, submitted his forms on Monday.

Over the past few months, Dr Bawumia has engaged in extensive consultations regarding his aspiration to contest for the NPP’s flagbearer position.

He held meetings with the Majority Caucus in Parliament, the Party’s Council of Elders, as well as various traditional and religious leaders to announce his intentions to lead the NPP after President Akufo-Addo’s tenure in 2025.

The NPP leadership opened nominations for the Presidential Primaries on May 26, 2023, and the process will close on June 24, 2023.

Currently, ten presidential aspirants, including Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Kennedy Agyapong, Joe Ghartey, and Kwabena Adjei Agyapong, have picked up nomination forms to compete for the NPP’s flagbearer position.

The NPP plans to hold a Special Delegates Congress on August 26, 2023, to select the top five presidential aspirants.

These top five candidates will then compete on December 4, 2023, to secure the party’s flagbearer slot and subsequently lead the party in the 2024 general elections.

It is Bawumia’s season not Alan – Annoh-Dompreh

Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh has stated that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will emerge victorious in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential race leading up to the 2024 general elections.

He stated that politics is defined by times and seasons therefore this is the time for Dr Bawumia to lead the NPP as flagbearer and subsequently lead the country as president.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, June 14, the Nsawam Adaogyiri lawmaker said about 119 of the Majority Members of Parliament support Dr Bawumia to be flagbearer.

“As at the last count we were doing over 119 MPs, some have whispered into my ears, some have shown it openly, and that is how it looks. I am praying that it gets better.”

He added “This is not Alan’s time, this is Dr Bawumia’s time. Politics is season and time, if you are not careful you will get it wrong. Look at the US, President Biden himself, look at all the processes he went through but today he is the president. People say Alan was closer in the last primaries we held so reasonably he will take over but the dynamism of leadership and politics should let them know that the narrative has changed.

“It is Dr Bawumia’s time, nobody can change it except God. We respect all the people who are seeking to lead our party. The fact of the matter is, I have been on the grounds, I have been to all the regions, if the primaries is conducted today Dr Bawumia will win, Alan cannot beat Bawumia.

“I am not a novice in this game, I have done grassroots mobilization all up to his time, if a win is coming I can see it and I can feel it. Even in the special delegates conference Dr Bawumia will not win with less than 70 percent of the special delegates’ conference. We have done our work and we are still working.”

Meanwhile Dr Bawumia has said he would file his nomination forms on Friday, June 16 to enable him to contest in the presidential race of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a tweet, he said “Dear Friends, God willing tomorrow, Friday 16 June, I shall file my nomination forms and contest the @NPP_GH Presidential Primary. It is possible.”

He picked up the forms on Tuesday, May 30.

The forms were picked on his behalf by former Vice Chairman of the NPP, Fred Oware and former National Organiser Sammy Awuku.

The NPP opened nominations for its flagbearer elections on Friday, May 26.

The nominations will close on Saturday, June 24, according to a press release issued on Thursday, May 25.

“Consequently, an Aspiring Presidential Candidate shall obtain the Nomination Forms after payment of a non-refundable nomination fee of Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢50, 000.00) only, through a Banker’s Draft,” the statement said.

Bono East NPP Chairman sustains injuries in accident

The Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ibrahim Baba Bukari,Ibrahim Baba Bukari, has sustained injuries in a motorcycle accident while campaigning for the upcoming June 27 by-election.

His condition is currently critical and requires immediate medical attention.

The incident occurred in Assin Bereku, located in the Assin North District of the Central Region.

On Monday, June 11, a speeding vehicle collided with the motorcycle that Chairman Bukari was riding, resulting in severe injuries.

Due to the critical condition, he has been airlifted from St. Francis Xavier Hospital to Accra for further medical treatment.

The NPP constituency secretary for Assin North, Stephen Asamoah, expressed concerns about possible foul play in the accident.

According to Asamoah, Chairman Bukari was en route to campaign in Assin Akomfede when the incident took place. He explained that while riding his bike, he was struck by a black salon car, and the occupants of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving him unattended.

The party officials suspect that the accident may have been a deliberate act targeting the Bono East Regional chairman, who has been actively engaged in campaigning for several weeks.

“Our brother, the Bono East Regional chairman has been with us for several weeks campaigning. But you know the way the towns are scattered you need a motorbike to move. He decided to go to Assin Akomfede to campaign but unfortunately, some men in a black salon car hit and left him unattended,” he stated.

  • Moving Ghana beyond IMF dependency is my motive – Alan

Moving Ghana beyond IMF dependency is my motive – Alan

The New Patriotic Partys (NPP) flagbearer candidate, Alan Kyerematen has proposed the Great Transformational Plan (GTP) as a new path for accelerated growth that will position the nation and end the cycle of IMF bailouts.

Speaking in a presentation to key private sector players on June 13, Mr Kyerematen expressed the value of deliberate Government policy driving desired outcomes in the private sector.
He said “Government has the power through policy to turn the economy around in the preferred direction”.

The GTP proposed by Mr Kyerematen aims to foster a more self-reliant and resilient economy, propelling Ghana from a state of stability and growth to one of transformation.

He stressed the need for a comprehensive plan to guide the nation beyond the transitional Post-COVID Economic Recovery Programme (P-CERP) currently underway with IMF support.

According to Kyerematen, the recent IMF bailout served as a lesson that Ghana’s economy remains fragile, vulnerable, and prone to external and domestic shocks. He attributed this vulnerability to the country’s heavy reliance on commodity exports with limited value addition. Additionally, he highlighted that the projected 5.1% GDP growth for the Ghanaian economy in 2023 hinges on anticipated increases in global commodity prices.

The success of the GTP, as outlined by Kyerematen, will rely on robust macroeconomic fundamentals.
These include maintaining a stable currency, managing inflation rates, ensuring sustainable debt levels, optimizing revenue generation, exercising prudent expenditure control to achieve fiscal balance, fostering low competitive interest rates, and building strong external reserves supported by ample liquidity to fortify the financial sector.

Private sector captains who attend the business meeting with Alan Kyerematen include the respective Presidents of the Private Enterprise Federation, Nana Osei Bonsu, the Association of Ghana Industry (AGI), Dr. Ayim Darke, the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Clement Amoako, the Association of Small Scale Industries, Alhaji Mumin Saeed and the Vice President of GUTA, Mr. Clement Boateng. Group angry over lack of prosecution of Akonta mining directors in galamsey fight

The Media Coalition Against Galamsey (MCAG) has expressed frustration over what they perceive to be a lack of progress in the prosecution of the Akonta Mining Limited directors.

MCAG sent two petitions to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare in January 2023, to carry out swift investigations into the alleged illegal mining activities by Akonta Mining owned by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako.

MCAG in a statement said its team met with senior officials of the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) on Thursday, June 8, 2023, to discuss the progress of the investigation into Akonta Mining Limited’s mining activities in the Tano Nmira Forest Reserves.

The MCAG in the statement said it was informed that investigations were ongoing, but the group expressed disappointment that the directors of Akonta Mining Limited had not yet been prosecuted, despite the clear evidence of their alleged wrongdoing.

MCAG thus called on the CID to expedite the prosecution of the directors of the company to ensure that they are brought to justice.

“It was made known during the meeting that investigations were ongoing into the activities of Akonta Mining Limited. The delegation from the MCAG was appreciative of the work being carried out by the CID. We, however, expressed our frustration at the seeming lack of action in the prosecution of the director(s) of Akonta Mining Ltd, in the face of clear evidence (including what we added to our petition and statement to the Police) of they having breached the Minerals & Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) and prayed that the needed urgency be applied for the speedy prosecution of the director(s) of Akonta Mining Ltd since there was ample evidence available for their prosecution,” the group added in a statement.

The MCAG has also called on all well-meaning Ghanaians to join in the fight against illegal mining.

“There is and can be no conceivable justification for illegal mining to continue in Ghana,” said the MCAG in a statement.

“We urge all Ghanaians to join us in the fight to save our water bodies and preserve our environment for current and future generations.”

Illegal mining is a major environmental and economic problem in Ghana. It has led to the destruction of water bodies, the displacement of people, and the loss of biodiversity.

The MCAG is a coalition of media organizations that are committed to fighting illegal mining in Ghana.

MCAG has been at the forefront of the campaign to raise awareness of the problem and to hold those responsible to account.

NPP to conclude demands for Ofori-Atta’s removal – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

The fate of finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta would be decided by the members of parliament (MPs) belonging to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) , according to Majority Leader in Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

The Member of Parliament for the Suame constituency was reacting to the #KenMustGo uprising being championed by several NPP MPs.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu during a media engagement, added that the condition given by President Akufo-Addo was to allow the finance minister to conclude the IMF negotiations, and that seems to have been successful and therefore, the party will have to take a stand if becomes necessary.

“KenMustGo uprising must be left with the caucus. The entire caucus will have to engage to see what can be done going forward.

“…we will meet the president if it becomes necessary. Sometimes it’s good to allow sleeping dogs lie.

“But you should also consider that having finished with our engagement with the IMF, the president said ‘let him conclude our engagement with IMF’. Have we finished our engagement with IMF? We will take it up when it becomes necessary,” the MP said.

In 2022, over 100 NPP MPs petitioned the president to sack finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta over the mismanagement of Ghana’s economy.

The president, however, pleaded to have Ken Ofori-Atta finish up impending IMF negotiations to secure a $3 billion bailout from the Fund.

Suame interchange project to commence in August – Urban Roads director

The Suame interchange project in the Ashanti region is scheduled to commence in August, according to the Ashanti Regional Director for the Urban Roads Department, Francis Gabrah.

According to him although physical works on the project have not yet started, the project campsite is nearing completion, and that work could even begin before August.

Mr. Gabrah said this when the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, on Tuesday led some officials to visit the project campsite.

“This is a design-and-build contract, where the contractor is responsible for both the design and construction of the project. We started the design in February, and it is expected to be completed by August. However, we are almost finished. We have submitted the preliminary design, and we are even likely to start physical works by July,” he added.

Project Manager at Rango Construction, Mohammed Omar Fazzani, assured that work will commence on the project as soon as the designs are ready.

He stated that they are ahead of schedule and that they have received comments on the preliminary design submitted. He is positive that they will complete the 36-month project as planned.

Meanwhile, residents of the Ashanti Region have raised concerns about delays in the start of work on the Suame interchange project.

This has compelled the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region to appeal for the necessary processes to be expedited so that work can commence on the project.

  • Assin North: We have not conspired with EC to transfer any voter – NPP

Assin North: We have not conspired with EC to transfer any voter – NPP

The New Patriotic Party(NPP) has flatly denied being involved in the alleged scheme to fraudulently add the name of an ineligible candidate of the party to the Assin North Voters Register.

According to the NPP, it is yet to hold primaries in the Assin North Constituency to select its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming by-election. Therefore, it is unfounded for the NDC to claim that the NPP has already chosen a candidate and is conspiring with the Electoral Commission to transfer the voter.

The NPP in a statement, highlighted that both of its candidates, who have filed to contest in the by-election, meet the constitutional requirements. The party added that both candidates are registered voters and have resided in the Assin North Constituency for the minimum period of five years as required by the constitution.

“The NPP has no Parliamentary Candidate for Assin North. As publicly advertised, the Party is yet to hold Parliamentary Primaries in the Assin North Constituency to elect the Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for the by-election.3

“It therefore beggars belief how the NDC is able to determine our Parliamentary Candidate ahead of time and to suggest that we are plotting with the EC to illegally insert his name in the Assin North register.”

THE NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY IS NOT SEEKING TO TRANSFER ANY VOTER TO ASSIN NORTII VOTERS REGISTER, IGNORE THE NDC’S BASELESS CLAIMS

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken notice of a press statement issued by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on June 4, 2023, signed by the party’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, alleging that the NPP “is in cahoots with their collaborators in the Electoral Commission to transfer and insert the name of one Charles Opoku, into the Voters Register of the Assin North Constituency.

True to their character, the NDC’s statement is replete with spurious claims and baseless allegations intended to mislead the Ghanaian public and, unsurprisingly, prepare the ground for them to reject their imminent embarrassing defeat in the Assin North by-election.

For the avoidance of doubt, the NPP wishes to, by this statement. set the records straight by responding as follows:

    I. The NPP emphatically debunks the allegations that the Party “is in a plot to illegally insert the name of an unqualified NPP Parliament, Candidate into the Assin North Register.

Over the years, the NPP has worked hard to maintain its enviable position as the pacesetter of multiparty democracy in Ghana, which includes the strengthening of independent democratic institutions of the State like the Electoral Commission.

As such, we cannot be the Party that would engage in any acts that would jeopardize the nation’s democratic gains.

    2. The NPP has no Parliamentary Candidate for Assin North. As publicly advertised, the Party is yet to hold Parliamentary Primaries in the Assin North Constituency to elect the Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for the by-election.

It therefore beggars belief how the NDC is able to determine our Parliamentary Candidate ahead of time and to suggest that we are plotting with the EC to illegally insert his name in the Assin North register.

    3. Since the NDC is deficient in their appreciation of Ghana’s electoral laws, we wish to give them some education on the relevant aspects of the Law. “Their claim that the NPP is seeking to transfer the name of a registered voter to the Assin North register to qualify him to contest in the parliamentary by-election actually’ betrays the NDC’s appreciation of Article 94(1)(a) of the 1992 Constitution. Article 94(1)(a) does not require a parliamentary candidate to be registered in the constituency they wish to contest to be viable.

    4. The Constitution only requires that a candidate be a registered voter, it does not matter where they are registered. The Constitution also requires a Candidate to hail from the Constituency he is seeking to contest. The two Candidates who have filed to contest on the ticket in the by-election hail from Assin North and have both resided in that Constituency beyond the minimum period of five years required by the Constitution.

    5. It is in accordance with this that the Electoral Commission of Ghana only requires a Parliamentary Candidate to make a Statutory Declaration to the effect that he/she is a registered voter simplicita.
This can be seen under Part IV of the Parliamentary Nominations Form -2023, which was made available by the EC for aspiring Parliamentary Candidates in the by-election.

    6. Unlike them we are focused on selecting a qualified and capable candidate, one who carries no legal baggage like the NDC’s Mr. James Gyakye Quayson to represent the good people of Assin North.

    7. The NPP wishes to assure Ghanaians, particularly the people of Assin North that it is committed to upholding and defending the 1992 Constitution.

  • Joe Ghartey picks NPP presidential nomination form

Joe Ghartey, a former minister for railroads and development, has filed his nomination form to contest in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential election.

A delegation comprising his campaign team members picked the forms on his behalf on Thursday, June 1, at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra.

Speaking to the media, a member of the campaign team, Majeed Adam, said Mr Ghatey is ready for a victory because he has the backing of the grassroots.

He noted that if the former Minister wins the race, Ghanaians are assured of a new direction and leadership that will not only restore their confidence in the country, but also strengthen the economy and change the narrative of Ghana’s politics.

“The leadership of our time will lead to development. It must be seen as transformational rather than transitional. It is not just a matter of the fact that President Akufo-Addo is leaving and somebody must wear his shoes. We need a competent leader to wear his shoes so that Ghana will be better off than what we are seeing today,” Mr Adam noted.

This is not the first time the Essikado-Ketan MP is seeking to lead the NPP.

This brings the number of aspirants in the presidential race of the NPP to 10.

Former Ministers, Alan Kyerematen and Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and a former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh have all picked forms to contest.
