  • How NPP allotted GHC600,000 to 4 polling stations in Assin North – NPP chairman confesses

How NPP allotted GHC600,000 to 4 polling stations in Assin North – NPP chairman confesses

An alleged leaked tape, purportedly containing a confession by an NPP (New Patriotic Party) Chairman for the Akim Oda Constituency, Ampaabeng Assimeng, has emerged.

Mr Assimeng in the said audio is heard admitting to plans involving the distribution of GHC600,000 to voters in the Assin North constituency.

The audio recording suggests that the funds were intended to sway voter allegiance in favor of the NPP during the crucial Assin North bye-election, however things did not not go as expected as the party executives at the local level could not identify trace the whereabout of the money or who the final recipients were, and the party eventually lost the elections as well.

“It [NPP’s Assin North defeat] was painful but it was expected because the money fell into the wrong hands. There has not been any accountability with regards to how much was spent, how much remained and nobody has anything to say about it.

“To be honest, leadership made us understand that GHC600,000 was disbursed to our four polling stations, but just look at the votes we had. ‘Asempa na ye’ is also one of the NPP’s strongholds. In previous elections NPP can garner 1,600 votes out of 2,000 while NDC gets only 400 but look at the [abysmal] outcome of these elections, and if this is how we are going to break the eight the God help us,” he is heard saying in the video.

The leaked confession confirms various allegations of vote buying which circulated during the by-election. There were wild reports of both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) engaging in vote buying during the election. However, there was little evidence to prove the claims.

During the election, a viral video circulating on social media captured an incident from the recently concluded Assin North by-election, where an Electoral Commission (EC) official is allegedly seen accepting a bribe from a political party to influence the election results.

The video depicts a perplexed electoral official seated alongside a fellow colleague, while they are being interrogated by an individual behind the camera and a police officer. In the background, the police officer can be heard instructing the official to hand over the alleged bribe money, saying, “Bring it.” Simultaneously, the person behind the camera is heard urging the official to give the money to the police officer, stating, “You give the money to him, give it to him.”

As the situation unfolds, the electoral official reaches into his pocket, retrieves a stack of banknotes, and hands it over to the police officer. The unidentified commentator remarks, “Sit down,” after the money has been handed over to the police.

The video, which was circulating on social media generated significant attention and concern among social media users.

A user by the name of Kwaku Wisdom commented “The formula is simple, keep the voters poor, induce them with peanuts to keep us in power to continually keep them poor…and the circle never ends until the voter becomes wise.”

  • I sacrificed my political career for NPP in 2012 – Bawumia

I sacrificed my political career for NPP in 2012 – Bawumia

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has asserted that he has made significant sacrifices for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and should be granted the opportunity to lead the party in the 2024 elections.

During the 2012 general election petition, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that he willingly stepped forward as a witness for the NPP while his contenders made excuses.

Addressing delegates in the Suame constituency as part of his campaign in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia highlights his numerous sacrifices for the party throughout the years, including putting his political career on the line during his role as a witness for the NPP.

“Most of our members were giving excuses when the party was in need of a witness for the 2012 general election petition at the Supreme Court. I sacrificed my political career for the party, knowing very well the implications ahead if I don’t deliver well in court.”

“The excuses were many, some claimed they were travelling and all that because they were scared to put their political career on the line, but I stood my ground, I’m the best person to lead the party,” Dr. Bawumia added.

Dr. Bawumia is among the ten candidates who have undergone vetting and are vying for the position of flagbearer in the upcoming 2024 elections.

The other candidates include Alan Kyerematen, a former Trade Minister; Joe Ghartey, a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice; Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, a former Minister of Food and Agric; Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, a former General Secretary of NPP; Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP for Assin Central; Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, a former MP for Offinso North; Boakye Agyarko, a former Energy Minister; Kojo Opoku; and Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former MP for Mampong constituency.

Our system is neutral it is devoid of favoritism – NIA

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has provided assurance that its systems are not designed to favor any specific political party, including the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Electoral Commission (EC) has proposed a constitutional amendment that would make the Ghana Card the sole document for confirming nationality and age during voter registration for the 2024 elections. However, this proposal has faced opposition from the minority group in Parliament, who express concerns about potential disenfranchisement of citizens.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Attafuah stated that it would be a significant embarrassment not to utilize the Ghana Card for the upcoming general election.

“Our processes is politically neutral, it cannot benefit a particular party, weather it is National Democratic Congress or New Patriotic Party and NDC has nothing to fear about the Ghana Card and our processes.

“We are not engineering anything to the detriment of NDC and we cannot engineer anything to the benefit of the NPP, we will not do that, we are not designed to do that, the system is technical, its is neutral,” the NIA boss added.

  • You are causing financial loss to the state for boycotting Parliamentary sittings – PNC to Minority

You are causing financial loss to the state for boycotting Parliamentary sittings – PNC to Minority

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has expressed criticism towards the Minority’s decision to boycott parliamentary sittings as a means of showing support for their colleagues who are currently on trial.

The PNC argues that this boycott is resulting in financial losses for the state.

The NDC Minority in Parliament chose to abstain from Thursday’s session to accompany and show solidarity with two Caucus members, namely Minority Leader Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and MP for Assin North Hon. James Gyakye Quayson.

The individuals are scheduled to appear in court today, facing ongoing prosecutions from the Attorney-General and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Government.

In a statement signed by Minority Chief Whip, Kwame Governs Agbodza, it was stated that “The Minority stands united with our colleagues and, therefore, will be unable to carry out the business of the house today.”

However, the PNC disagrees with this decision. In a statement dated July 7, 2023, PNC General Secretary Janet Asana Nabla acknowledges the Minority’s right to express support for their fellow MP during these challenging times in the Legislature.

“However, the decision to boycott sitting due to criminal charges instituted by the republic against their colleague is worrying. An opposition party which professes to believe in the rule of law is expected to have faith in the legal system of our nation where they held the reins of power some few years ago.

“The Minority Members in Parliament at this moment is causing financial loss to the state by abandoning their Parliamentary business to go to court to protest for their colleague. For how long will the Minority in Parliament continue this boycott of parliamentary sitting at the expense of the tax payer? the General Secretary asked.

  • NPP lost Assin North by-election due to “Deception, Inducement and Violence” – Sammy Gyamfi

NPP lost Assin North by-election due to “Deception, Inducement and Violence” – Sammy Gyamfi

Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the Assin North by-election due to three initiatives taken by the ruling party, according to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

NDC National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, explained that ahead of the by-election on June 27, the NPP undertook three actions namely; Deception, Inducement and Violence with the acronym “DIV”.

According to him, with regards to deception, the NPP unknowingly sold NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson while warning electorates of the possibility of him being imprisoned over the allegations of perjury and forgery.

“In their campaign, the ‘D’ was, don’t vote for Quayson, he lied to you. They (NPP) were spending about 30 minutes explaining why Gyakye Quayson will go to jail,” he said.

Another reason the NPP lost was due to the amount of money dashed to electorates, Mr Gyamfi said.

“They thought that the people of Assin will sell their conscience and mandate for a pittance for their 200 and 300 cedis most of which were misappropriated by the people they entrusted them with. When we were busy campaigning in the midnights, I would always see them by the roadside eating “chinchinga” (beef sewers) and dancing and drinking beer with their women and all that. Their only hope was that we are going to deceive this people”.

He also accused the NPP of orchestrating violent activities that ensued during the by-election. Per reports, the vehicles of Mr Gyamfi and other NDC executives were attacked.

“You saw how they deployed their hooligans, bandits and their thugs on the election day and how they sort to intimidate us and sort to attack some of us, shot into our cars, vandalized our cars but we and the good people of Assin were resolute throughout the process”

Mr Gyakye Quayson on Tuesday, June 27, beat his closest contender, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Assin North by-election by obtaining 17,245 votes out of the total valid votes of 29,962, representing 57.56 per cent.

Mr Charles Opoku, on the other hand, garnered 12,630 of the votes cast, representing 42.17 per cent while Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) secured 87 votes.

Manhyia South wants Bawumia as NPP flagbearer – Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh

Energy Minister and MP for Manhyia South, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has assured full support to Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia from Manhyia South delegates in upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) elections.

Dr. Prempeh highlights Bawumia’s sterling qualities, experience, loyalty, and sacrifices for the party, making him the best candidate for the 2024 elections.

The Energy Minister emphasizes Bawumia’s ability to unite all sections of Ghanaian society and religious backgrounds, crucial for the party’s quest to secure a 3rd term electoral victory known as ‘breaking the 8’ in NPP terms.

“The Vice President has served well as Vice President, defending the programmes and policies of our government and remains the only existential threat to the electoral fortunes of John Mahama and the NDC, of all the candidates vying for the flagbearership slot” he said.

Dr. Prempeh adds that, with the endorsement of Otumfuo Asantehene, who considers Dr. Bawumia his son, he sees Bawumia as his own father and therefore pledges unwavering support for him in the competition.

As the Vice President visits the Ashanti Region, the stronghold of the NPP, for the next 11 days, he will engage with delegates in the 47 constituencies, articulating why they should select him over the other 9 contenders in the party’s flagbearer race.

  • I haven’t planned anything with Asamoah Gyan to overthrow you – Alan’s boy “exposes” Bawumia’s assistant

Spokesperson for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Gideon Boako, has refuted claims that he is endorsing renowned Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan to run for the Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro parliamentary seat on behalf of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with the intention of unseating current NPP Member of Parliament (MP) Sylvester Tetteh.

Hon. Sylvester Tetteh had accused Dr. Gideon Boako of orchestrating his defeat by supporting the influential and affluent Asamoah Gyan, purportedly due to Tetteh’s unwavering support for Alan Kyeremanten’s candidacy in the NPP flagbearership race.

However, Dr. Boako strongly emphasized that he has never engaged in such activities and has neither met nor spoken to Asamoah Gyan in person.

“So this is how the likes of Sylvester Tetteh and supporters of Alan Kyeremanten want to run their campaign. I have never spoken to or met Baby Jet in person before. I have no idea he even wants to contest for parliamentary elections, let alone go and support him. SMH,” he said in reply to Hon. Sylvester Tetteh’s accusations.

According to reports, Asamoah Gyan is considering running for the Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro parliamentary seat. Rumors circulated in 2020 that he was getting ready to run for the position on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a group he finances.

In 2022, Asamoah Gyan Asamoah Gyan, in an interview with Kumasi-based SOMPA FM, gave the strongest indication yet that he could contest the seat.

“For me, it’s a positive thing we are hearing. When people choose you that’s the most important thing. I and my team have not thought about venturing into politics. But you might not know.

It is a positive thing that we’ve heard. There are many other places that have written to me to become a Member of Parliament. I’m not ready now because it’s a full-time thing and what I want to say is that I’m thankful they have confidence in me that I can lead them.”

“I’m neutral, I don’t align with any political party. I’ve been the Captain of Black Stars and so I can’t align with any political party because you don’t know the party that will come to power. I’m tagged as an NPP because NPP comes from my family. Busia brought my father from Wenchi to Accra so people tag me as NPP. I’m neutral and I’ll be open to any form of appointment from any political party.” He revealed.

In the NPP flagbearership race, Alan Kyeremanten and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia are typically seen as the front-runners.

  • Gyakye Quayson did not deceive EC – Kofi Adams

Gyakye Quayson did not deceive EC – Kofi Adams

Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Adams, has affirmed that the Electoral Commission (EC) has not expressed any grievances regarding allegations of deceit in the case involving James Gyakye Quayson.

According to him, the EC is aware that Quayson underwent the necessary legal processes to renounce his Canadian citizenship before contesting the seat in the 2020 election.

Adams further highlighted that the EC scrutinized Quayson’s eligibility and deemed him qualified to contest the election. He explained that when Quayson took the oath of office upon his election, he did so as a Ghanaian.

“They saw everything about it and still thought that he was qualified to contest that election. That is why the Electoral Commission is not a complainer. That is why the Electoral Commission is not saying that they have been deceived by anybody because they were never deceived,” myjoyonline quoted Adams.

According to Adams, when reports regarding the citizenship status of the Assin North MP surfaced, the authorities in the Central Region acknowledged that it was beyond their jurisdiction. The matter was subsequently referred to the Chair of the EC, Madam Jean Mensa, who established a committee involving legal practitioners to review the reports and documentation related to Gyakye Quayson’s identity.

The committee examined the documents, including the renunciation certificate of the MP, and determined that Gyakye Quayson was qualified to contest the election, Adams noted.

James Gyakye Quayson, a candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), recently lost his position as the constituency’s MP after a court ruled that he held dual citizenship, which is illegal for anyone occupying a public office. Consequently, the seat was declared vacant, leading to a by-election.

Amidst the court case, the NPP capitalized on the issue to campaign against Quayson, suggesting that he would be unable to serve the constituency if imprisoned. However, experts caution that such a strategy may backfire, as it could lead to perceptions of persecution among the constituency’s youth.

Despite winning the seat by a significant margin, Gyakye Quayson will continue to pursue the legal process until the case is concluded.

Some individuals are now calling for the discontinuation of the court proceedings in the interest of democracy.

  • Only 1 NPP MP stood firm in drafting anti-LGBTQ+ bill – Sam George

Only 1 NPP MP stood firm in drafting anti-LGBTQ+ bill – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has revealed that out of the three New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs who initially expressed support for the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, only one remained committed to the drafting of the bill.

Speaking in an interview on Neat FM on Thursday, July 6, 2023, Sam George said that the NPP MP who stayed loyal to the course was the MP for Assin South and Deputy Minister for Education, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour.

According to him, the other NPP MPs who were initially sponsoring the bill failed to attend meetings to draft the bill and even missed the final presentation of the bill to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, because of the pressures they were under.

The MP made these remarks while reacting to a statement by Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, the MP for Asante Akim, who was part of the NPP MPs initially sponsoring the anti-LGBTQI bill, that he was not present for the presentation of the bill because he was busy.

“He had sixteen meetings to put together the bill with the coalition. Ask him (Andy Appiah) Kubi whether he attended any of these meetings. Every time, they have an excuse to give, even on the day of the presentation they want to give an excuse.

“If today all of them are now on board, they are welcome. But I would continue to celebrate Honourable Ntim Fordjour because on that day (the day of the presentation of the bill) we knew the pressure that he came under but he said he was a priest and he believed it was the right thing to do,” Sam George said.

He insisted that Andy Appiah and all the other sponsors of the bill were aware of the day it was being presented but he failed to show up.

The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, was sponsored by Sam George (NDC MP), Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah (NDC MP), Della Adjoa Sowah (NDC MP), Rev Ntim Fordjour (NPP MP), Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini (NDC MP), Rita Naa Odoley Ntso (NDC MP) and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (NDC MP).

The names of the two other NPP MPs who were initially supporting the bill did not appear on the final report of the bill by the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of the House.

Parliament on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, adopted a motion to approve the bill.

Afriyie Akoto satisfied with successful vetting process

A potential presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has conveyed contentment regarding the outcome of his vetting process.

During his appearance before the New Patriotic Party’s Vetting Committee, led by former Speaker of Parliament Prof. Mike Oquaye, on July 5, 2023, the ex-Minister for Food and Agriculture conveyed his assurance of being approved by the Committee to compete in the Flagbearer race.

“The exercise is confidential so I can’t tell you much. But what I can say is that everything has gone well,” the former Member of Parliament for Kwadaso told the media after his vetting

Dr. Afriyie Owusu Akoto who is an Agricultural Economist by profession is confident of being elected as the NPP flagbearer to the 2024 general election.

Other aspirants to be vetted on Wednesday include former Minister for Trade and Industry, Dr. K.K Apraku and former Railway Development Minister and Essikado Member of Parliament, Joe Ghartey. So far, six other aspirants have already been vetted.

They include, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Alan Kyerematen, Kwadwo Poku, Ken Agyepong, Kwabena Agyepong and Boakye Agyarko.

  • NPP MP advocates for dual citizens’ right to run for Parliament as MPs

NPP MP advocates for dual citizens’ right to run for Parliament as MPs

Mpraeso’s Member of Parliament, Davis Ansah Opoku, has expressed his opinion that individuals holding dual citizenship should have the opportunity to participate in parliamentary elections in Ghana.

In his view, it is illogical that individuals with dual citizenship can occupy significant governmental roles, yet they are barred from pursuing membership in Parliament.

During an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, Davis Opoku highlighted that even in developed nations such as the United Kingdom, lawmakers are permitted to possess dual citizenship.

“For me, I support and I’m pushing for dual citizens to sit in parliament. So, this whole thing of somebody holding a citizenship of another country… that person should not be denied the opportunity to contribute to the development of our country,”

“Boris Johnson, he was the Prime Minister of the UK; whiles serving as PM, he was a US citizen as well. The Prime Minister of Canada holds a Canadian citizenship as well as a US citizenship. People’s allegiance to the state should not be questioned by the mere fact that they embarked on a trip to seek for greener pastures somewhere.

“If you look at the NCA (National Communication Authority) that is the nerve of our country; look at the National Health Insurance Authority that holds the health data of our country; these two institutions can be managed by people who hold dual citizenship. Why can’t such persons sit in parliament to pass laws,” he said.

The MP, therefore, called for an amendment of Ghana’s constitutes to allow Ghanaians who have other nationalities to contest to become MPs.

“The times when that law, that constitutional provision was made has changed, whether we like it or not,” he said.

He added that current issues surrounding the nationality of the Member of Parliament for Assin North, who has been accused by the state of lying about his dual nationality should serve as a wake-up call for all MPs.

  • NPP ends presidential aspirants vetting today

NPP ends presidential aspirants vetting today

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is in the final stages of its vetting process for presidential aspirants.

The last candidate to be vetted today, Thursday, July 6, is a former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh.

He is making another attempt at securing the NPP flagbearership after an unsuccessful bid in 2014.

The vetting process has already included prominent figures such as Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, former Minister of Food and Agric Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, former General Secretary of NPP Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former MP for Offinso North Dr. Kofi Konada Apraku, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, and Kojo Opoku.

Each of these aspirants has presented their vision for both the NPP and the country as a whole, outlining their plans and goals if elected as the NPP flagbearer.

This primary election marks the second attempt for some of these candidates in their pursuit of leading the party.

The NPP members and supporters will now evaluate the candidates’ visions and proposals before making their decision on who will become the NPP flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.
According to Evans Nimako, Secretary to the Vetting Committee, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will carefully consider the concerns raised by all the aspirants before the elections.

“They raised a number of issues during the process. They raised the issue of fairness, and transparency of the process and I can assure you that looking at the calibre of people who constitute this kind of committee, they can be assured that the whole process will be conducted in a fair, free and transparent manner. That is assured,” Evans Nimako stated.

The party started its vetting on Monday, July 3.

  • NPP executives to receive salaries, Social Security benefits under Alan’s leadership

NPP executives to receive salaries, Social Security benefits under Alan’s leadership

Presidential aspirant Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that when voted into power, national executives of the party will receive salaries and social security benefits.

He made this announcement at the beginning of his tour of the Greater Accra Region.

In an innovative approach to internal party elections, Alan engaged with delegates from three constituencies in an open mini durbar at the Suu Astro Turf in the Ablekuma Central constituency. Delegates from Ablekuma South and North also attended the durbar. This move addresses the concern of NPP executives, members, and supporters who have felt neglected by the party and its structures while in power.

Alan Kyerematen believes it is time for the hardworking party members to reap the benefits of their dedication, which has contributed to the NPP’s success in national elections. As a result, he has pledged to provide salaries and social security for party executives.

This approach reflects Alan’s determination to run the party as a disciplined corporate entity, ensuring that members are rewarded for their efforts instead of treating party positions as thankless sacrifices.

Furthermore, the concept of a peoples’ assembly showcased the participatory governance that Ghanaians can expect under an Alan Kyerematen administration.

During the first leg of his Greater Accra tour, Alan was accompanied by party stalwarts such as former Attorney General Ayikoi Otoo, Minister of Railway and Rail Transport Peter Amewu, NPP chairpersons from the three Ablekuma constituencies, and Hopeson Adorye, among others.

  • Nominations for NPP primaries in orphan constituencies to be opened on July 11

Nominations for NPP primaries in orphan constituencies to be opened on July 11

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that nominations for parliamentary primaries in constituencies where the party has no parliamentary representation, known as orphan constituencies, will commence on July 11, 2023.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, released a statement in Accra on Wednesday, confirming that this decision was endorsed during the Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council meetings on April 3, 2023.

According to Mr. Frimpong, the nomination period will conclude on August 10, 2023, with the elections scheduled to take place between September 23, 2023, and December 2, 2023, spanning several Saturdays.

“Nomination forms could be obtained at a non-refundable application fee of GH¢3,000.00 in a bankers draft payable to the NPP national headquarters in Accra,” he added.

Mr. Frimpong also stated that if an aspiring parliamentary candidate is unable to obtain the nomination form at the constituency level, they have the option to obtain it through alternative means.

They can appeal to the regional or national secretariat to acquire the form or download it from the Party’s website, www.newpatrioticparty.org, upon payment of a fee. This provision ensures that candidates have access to the nomination forms regardless of any difficulties faced at the constituency level.

“To successfully file a nomination, an aspiring parliamentary candidate must submit a non-refundable filing fee of GHS35,000 in a bankers draft payable to the NPP national headquarters in Accra,” he added.

The NPP General Secretary added that aspirant parliamentary candidates will receive a 50% rebate of the filing fees in order to encourage greater representation of women, young people, and people with disabilities (PWDs) in higher political offices.

“This means they will be required to pay a non-refundable filing fee of GHS17,500.00,” he added.

Mr Frimpong stressed that the party’s leadership will not deny any parliamentary candidate access to purchase the nomination forms.

  • Peter Amewu mistakenly introduces Alan Kyerematen as incoming Vice President

Peter Amewu mistakenly introduces Alan Kyerematen as incoming Vice President

Minister of Railway Development, John Peter Amewu, had a momentary slip of the tongue when he introduced Alan Kyerematen as the incoming Vice President of Ghana.

Amewu was addressing a large gathering of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters at Liberty Park in Dansoman on July 4, 2023, during the presidential flagbearer hopeful’s constituency delegates durbar.

As the penultimate speaker before Alan took the stage, Amewu praised Alan’s impact and record within the party and his contributions as a member of previous NPP governments.

However, during the formal invitation to Alan to speak, he unintentionally referred to him as the incoming Vice President before quickly correcting himself.

“With all honour and respect, I want to use this opportunity to introduce the incoming Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, in the person of Hon. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen,” he said to cheers.

He swiftly rectified his mistake as Alan approached him, clarifying: “as the incoming president of the Republic of Ghana.”

Alan descended from the platform and proceeded to deliver his speech, which contained impassioned segments. He urged the delegates to remain steadfast and courageous, emphasizing that if Ghanaians heeded his words, the government would not have to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Expressing gratitude, Alan Kyerematen extended his appreciation to the delegates for their unwavering support and the impressive turnout at the event.

He acknowledged their aspirations for power and confidently asserted that he, Alan Kyerematen, was the individual capable of fulfilling those aspirations for the NPP.

“I would like to thank you all, I am very happy for coming in your numbers. God bless you all. And I know that all delegates who are present here are interested in power, and the person who can give you power is me, Alan Kyerematen,” he affirmed.

Kwabena Agyapong speaks of creating a new Ghana after NPP vetting

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kwabena Agyepong has reiterated his vision of creating a new Ghana should he be given the nod to become President come 2024 elections.

Addressing the media on July 4, after facing a vetting panel of the NPP with regards to the presidential race, he indicated that “we need a new Ghana”.

“I am very confident, in this country a lot of people have resonated positively with my message of ushering a new dawn, a new direction, and a new dimension for this country. He did not indicate his reasons but he was heard telling the journalists that there would be “no interview.” He emphasised this by shaking his head and making hand gestures while he made his way out of the vetting hall.

The incident occurred on July 4, 2023, the second day of the vetting process, when Kennedy Agyapong, accompanied by a multitude of enthusiastic supporters amid fanfare went to the party’s headquarters in Accra.

Alan Kyerematen claims IMF intervention was avoidable

Former Minister of Trade and Industry and aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Alan Kyerematen, has stated that Ghana could have prevented its reliance on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by implementing his proposed ideas.

However, failure of the country to heed to his advise ended the country up at the Bretton Woods institution.

During his recent tour of Greater Accra delegates, Alan Kyerematen emphasised the potential of President’s Special Initiatives (PSI) introduced during the previous administration of John Agyekum Kuffour. He stated that if the nation had embraced this transformative concept, it could have significantly altered Ghana’s economic trajectory.

Reflecting on his contributions to the country, he expressed a sense of regret, stating, “The amount of work I have done for this country, sometimes I even feel ashamed talking about it.”

He emphasized his role in introducing the President’s Special Initiatives during President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration and suggested that had Ghanaians embraced his ideas, the country would not have resorted to seeking assistance from the IMF, he is quoted to have said.

The strategic intent of the PSIs, according to the NPP government, was to move Ghana’s economy beyond HIPC status and reduce the country’s over-dependence on aid and donor support and a few commodity exports by finding new pillars of growth.

A total of 10 NPP presidential candidate aspirants had picked up nomination forms as of Thursday, June 1, 2023, and had paid a non-refundable nomination fee of GHC50,000.

The 10 include; Vice- President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Joe Ghartey, a businessman and energy expert Kwadwo Poku, a former Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko, a former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former Minister of State, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku and a former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

NDC stalwarts storm Parliament to support ‘darling boy’ Gyakye Quayson

National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwarts on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, set aside all other engagements to gather at Parliament and offer their resolute support to their ‘darling boy’, James Gyakye Quayson, as he was being sworn-in in Parliament

Former President John Dramani Mahama who is also the flagbearer of the party, National Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, among others, were all present to grace the occasion. Their presence was announced by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

The MP in the past few years had been entangled in a legal battle over his failure to revoke his dual citizenship prior to the conduct of the December 7, 2020 general elections.

On May 13, 2023, the Supreme Court directed Parliament to expunge Mr Gyakye Quayson from the records of the house, and declare his seat vacant.

The directive led to a by-election, which Mr Quayson eventually won.

As he was being sworn in on Tuesday, his fellow MPs on the Minority side were in their numbers to support him.

The NDC MPs, all clad in white, greeted the re-elected MP for Assin North with exuberant cheers and resounding applause as he prepared to take his oath of office in Parliament on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

However, most members on the Majority side did not show up for the event.

Meanwhile, the MP is still in court facing charges of perjury and deceiving a public officer after the Supreme Court nullified his election as MP for Assin North for holding Canadian citizenship and being a Ghanaian when he filed his nomination to contest the election in 2020.

The Court will hear his case on July 6, 2023.

  • We will boycott Parliament on Gyakye Quayson trial days – Minority to Speaker

We will boycott Parliament on Gyakye Quayson trial days – Minority to Speaker

The Minority in Parliament has informed the Speaker that they will abstain from participating in the House proceedings on court days concerning their colleague, James Gyakye Quayson.

The leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, stated that they will instead accompany their colleague during his court hearings.

This announcement was made by the Ajumako Enyan Essiam lawmaker on Tuesday, July 4, following the swearing-in of the Assin North MP.

“We wish to serve notice that the entire Minority will accompany our colleague today and any other day that he is to appear in court and we are solidarising with our colleague and we will not participate in the business of the House anytime our colleague is in court and we will be withdrawing from the Chamber after this ceremony if the court processes happen today.”

The former Deputy Finance Minister highlighted that Mr. Quayson’s electoral success is a clear indication that Ghanaians are dissatisfied with the Akufo-Addo government.

He emphasized that this victory demonstrates that Ghanaians cannot be influenced solely by financial incentives or virtual projects in exchange for votes.

“The people of Assin North have sent a clear message to all politicians and the government of the day especially, that they cannot be lured with money not be intimidated by threats and it is the same message that Ghanaians are sending to us that in the year 2024, they will exercise their franchise based on their conscience and no amount of threats will dissuade them from voting out the administration that we are witnessing.”

“Ghanaians are really appalled by the abysmal economic mismanagement, poor governance, and increasing level of corruption leading to the unprecedented economic hardship being experienced by the people of Ghana and the time has come for the political class to have a rethink about the worsening monetization of our elections and its negative impact for our democracy,” Dr Forson added.

James Gyakye Quayson has been officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Assin North on Tuesday, July 4. This follows his victory in the by-election held on Tuesday, June 27, after the Supreme Court ruled his previous election illegal.

Quayson’s main opponent, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party, secured the second position with 42.15% of valid votes. The Liberal Party of Ghana’s Bernice Enam Sefanu received a minimal number of votes.

The voter turnout was reported to be high at 74.23%, according to officials of the Electoral Commission.

Quayson is currently facing charges of forgery, perjury, deceiving a public officer, and making a false declaration regarding his Canadian citizenship during the 2020 election. He has filed a motion at the High Court for a stay of proceedings pending an appeal, seeking to halt the ongoing trial until the appeal is determined.

NPP MPs absent from Parliament during Gyakye Quayson’s swearing-in ceremony

Most Members of Parliament (MP) from the Majority side (i.e the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were absent in the parliamentary chamber during the highly anticipated swearing-in ceremony of James Gyakye Quayson.

The absence of the NPP MPs during such a crucial event highlights the party’s position on the MP’s re-election while still entangled in a legal battle over his citizenship.

Regardless, Parliament was filled with jubilation as the House swore in the Member of Parliament-elect, James Gyakye Quayson.

The euphoria ahead of the process emanated from just one side as most members of the Majority are absent.

Minority MPs are singing and chanting victory songs for their colleague while clad in all-white apparel.

Only a few NPP MPs were seen dotted around their side of the aisle.

The public gallery is equally flooded with leadership from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Notable among them are 2024 flagbearer and former President John Mahama, his election 2020 Running mate Prof Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, Chairman Asiedu Nketiah, General Secretary Fifi Kwetey, and former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, among others.

On June 27, Mr Quayson who was ejected from Parliament following a Supreme Court decision annulling the 2020 constituency election, won the Assin North by-election with 17,245 votes representing 57.56% of valid votes.

His main rival, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party polled 12,630 or 42.15% of valid votes to place second, while Liberal Party of Ghana’s Bernice Enam Sefanu polled only 87 votes or 0.29%.

Addressing the legislators, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin indicated that the Electoral Commission (EC) had officially communicated the results to the House.

It is on this basis that the EC “declared Quayson James Gyakye as the elected Member of Parliament for the Assin North Constituency,” Mr Bagbin told the House.

After swearing him in, Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson congratulated the new MP adding that his side will be in court for support until the Quayson trial is over.

Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also welcomed James Gyakye Quayson and wished him well in the execution of his mandate.

Sitting was subsequently suspended for 30 minutes.

  • Apologise to Bawumia – Ex-NPP MP tells Nana B over Assin North rally mishap

Apologise to Bawumia – Ex-NPP MP tells Nana B over Assin North rally mishap

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum, Fred Opare Ansah, has asked the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana B to issue an apology to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia due to an organizational oversight that occurred during the party’s final rally before the Assin North by-elections on June 25.

According to Fred Opare Ansah the Vice President, aside from Alan Kyerematen who faced an impolite interruption upon Bawumia’s arrival, also experienced a negative impact as a result of the incident.

“Bawumia and president Akufo-Addo left an event at the same time and were headed to the same place. The president takes precedent over everyone and by protocol, he is the last person to arrive before an event starts.

“So the organizers wanted to find a quick route to the dais for Bawumia,” he said of the incident before adding: “so, it is not his team, neither is it himself, the blame should lie squarely on the organizers.

“And I am happy that the national organizer of the party has come out clearly and apologized to Alan, except that I feel the apology should be extended to the Vice President to say, ‘look, I know it is not your fault but sorry for causing you this embarrassment.”

The former lawmaker, contributing to Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show on July 3, advised those trying to make capital gains out of the incident against Dr. Bawumia or Alan Kyerematen to desist from it.

“Those who are trying to take political advantage of this in their campaign should realize that if you cause disaffection or public ridicule for someone, it doesn’t impact on just one person. It is a ridicule on the entire party”, he cautioned.

Nana B, speaking about the incident to Accra-based Okay FM, attributed the mishap to lack of communication between the handlers of the vice president and the campaign organizers.

“I have seen some of the circulating videos and I must say that in every organization, we get some of these lapses. There was a lack of communication between us the organisers and the handlers.

“When you pay close attention, the explanation to it is that the president was coming. So, the vice president’s handlers out of good fate, which one would have thought that the vice president will leave the stage before the president comes. However, the time they took to do that didn’t go well,” he said.

The National Organiser, Nana B further added it was not intentional to publicly embarrass the former minister.

“I will not offer a lot of explanation but as a National Organiser, I was not visibly happy that Alan kyerematen is speaking then this happens.

“I will want to use your platform, and, in all humility, what happened was not because someone planned it. In all humility, let me apologise unreservedly to Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen for the small hitch that happened when he was speaking at the Assin North constituency campaign. It was a lapse that happened,” he added.

The incident, captured in a viral video, showed Alan Kyerematen addressing constituents at Assin North when Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia joined him on the platform.

Veep was introduced to the crowd while Alan Kyerematen was still speaking.

The scene was not pleasant for the flagbearer hopeful, who was also a contender against the vice as both are vying to be the party’s flagbearer.

  • A broader conversation is needed on the matter – Ayikoi Otoo on Quayson’s case

A broader conversation is needed on the matter – Ayikoi Otoo on Quayson’s case

Former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, has stated that a broader conversation is necessary to address the criminal case involving ,the Member of Parliament-elect for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson.

Otoo, who also served as an ambassador to Canada, emphasized the political wisdom of entering a nolle prosequi in this case.

He highlighted the importance of considering the broader public sentiment and the potential reaction of the people of Assin North, particularly for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, speaking to the media on Monday July 4, Otoo clarified that the decision to enter a nolle prosequi cannot be made solely by the Attorney-General, unless it is endorsed by the cabinet.

“It will be a good thing to enter a nolle prosequi and stop all this to show more maturity but you cannot as an Attorney-General do it on your own, you are not independent, you are part of a whole.

“The Attorney-General is bound by cabinet decision and cabinet secrecy even if he disagrees, once it has been taken, you are bound,” he said.

“So, if you ask me, what I will tell you is that there is the need for some negotiation, a broader conversation on the matter,” he stressed.

The former Attorney-General responded to recent statements made by the Dormaahene regarding the discontinuation of the Gyakye Quayson trial in an Accra High Court. The A-G, Godfred Yeboah Dame, swiftly refuted the Dormaahene’s comments.

James Quayson pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including deceit of a public officer, forgery of travel documents, making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office. These charges stem from his alleged dual citizenship during his participation in the 2020 elections.

The Accra High Court mandated a daily trial, a ruling that has been challenged by Quayson’s legal team in the Court of Appeal.

  • NPP cautions its communicators against attack on Dormaahene

NPP cautions its communicators against attack on Dormaahene

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) through a directive issued by its Communication Directorate, has cautioned its members nationwide entrusted with the task of advocating for and promoting the government’s policies and projects to avoid engaging in personal attacks against Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II.

The directive highlights the party’s commitment to maintaining a respectful discourse and focusing on policy-related discussions rather than targeting the individual personality of the esteemed leader.

This is after the respected chief who’s also a sitting High Court Judge called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Attorney General Godfred Dame to discontinue the criminal trial of the newly elected Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson.

Speaking at the 10th Anniversary Lecture in honour of Prof. John Evan Atta Mills, the Dormaahene called on the President to intervene in the prosecution while the Attorney General and Minister for Justice files a nolle prosequi.

James Gyakye Quayson is facing trial for perjury at the High Court in Accra. He is facing charges of forgery and perjury about certain alleged offences in the run-up to the 2020 Assin North parliamentary election.

He has pleaded not guilty to five counts of forgery of passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury and false declaration for office.

It is the case of the prosecution that Mr Quayson allegedly made a false statement to the Passport Office that he did not hold a passport to another country when he applied for a Ghanaian Passport.

In addition, the prosecution has accused Mr Quayson of making a false declaration to the Electoral Commission (EC) to the effect that he (Quayson) did not owe any allegiance to a foreign country when he filed to contest as a candidate for the Assin North seat in 2020.

However, speaking at the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo and Western North regional version of the Professor John Evans Atta Mills Commemorative Lecture in Sunyani on Saturday, July 1, 2023, the Dormaahene appealed for the A-G to drop the criminal charges against Quayson.

“As a matter of urgency, I [Dormaahene] am appealing to the President of the Republic [Akufo-Addo], if he has any role to play, that trial should be aborted, and the Attorney-General should as a matter of urgency file a Nolle Prosequi to end that particular decision” and abort the criminal case against Mr Quayson”, the Dormaahene said.

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II insisted that it was needless for the AG to continue the case, after the chiefs and people of the Assin North constituency re-elected Quayson to be their MP, adding that continuing with the criminal trial was an insult to Ghanaians and the people of Assin North.

“I’m saying so because if we continue with this case, we’ll be insulting Ghanaians, especially people of Assin North. I don’t see the benefit that accrues to the country by continuing with the prosecution. Now that Gyakye Quayson has been re-elected, if he’s hauled before the court how can he effectively discharge his duty as a Member of Parliament? If he’s not allowed to help in formulating good laws to ensure the development of the country, how can he be blamed? It is on this plane that I appeal to the President, Mr President, you know I love you, but this matter cannot go on. Attorney General, you are a son of the Bono soil, please go through your laws and have a second look at this case.”

The public lecture was organised on the theme: “The man John Evans Atta Mills – 10 years on”.

Various speakers at the lecture described the late Prof Mills as a unifier, peacemaker, truthful, God-fearing man, humble, tolerant, listener, patient and selfless among others.

As part of the lecture, a 24-book page titled “Atta Mills Speaks to the World” was launched.

The book captured Prof Mills’ statements at the 64th, 65th and 66th General Assembly of the United Nations, during his term as President.

    NPP communicators speaking note 03.07.2023

In view of the debate which has risen from the lecture, the New Patriotic Party communication directorate has told their communicators to respect the legal views of the Dormaahene even though they disagree with him.

    A speaking note on 03.07.2023 sent across communications platforms of the party reads;

“Communicators should not attack the personality of the Chief though, we disagree with his call for the President to intervene or interfere with the independent work of the judiciary. 2. In the interest of equality before the law and the independence of the judiciary it will be better to allow the case to run its course. 3. The prosecution may determine whether to proceed or not; file a nolle prosequi or not if it becomes unavoidably clear that it does not have the evidence to advance the case. 4. Communicators should call on Ghanaians to support the Courts to do their work independently.”

Bawumia urges respectful NPP Primaries devoid of insults

In the run-up to the NPP primaries, Vice President Bawumia has made a fervent appeal for a clean campaign, urging all party members to avoid resorting to insults to maintain party unity. Bawumia’s call comes as an effort to foster a positive and constructive atmosphere within the party and ensure a cohesive and harmonious approach towards the primaries.

As the race for the flagbearership of the party intensifies, ten individuals, including the Vice President, have submitted their candidacy for consideration. However, concerns have arisen as the campaigning gains momentum, with allegations surfacing that certain aspirants are engaging in a divisive and hate-filled campaign.

Addressing party delegates on the final day of his Greater Accra tour, Dr. Bawumia said, as one family, it is important for all camps to understand that the party would need a united front to face the “main enemy”, which is the NDC.

“We all should understand that the campaign we are having now is for an internal election. The main enemy in 2024 is the NDC. As we embark on the campaign, let us not speak against each other,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“We want peace, we want a clean campaign and we want a clean election. We don’t want anyone to go out there and speak against an opponents. Because after our elections, we will need everyone on board to tackle the NDC.

In a clear demonstration of his commitment to a clean campaign, Dr. Bawumia said he has asked his campaign staff and well-wishers to be mindful of their utterances in order to ensure the unity of the party.

“So I have told all my supporters and spokespersons that we want a clean campaign and they should not go out there and insult anyone.”

“We are one family so let’s all stay together. When the contest is over, we will all come together as one family and make sure that the NDC doesn’t come back to power. That is very important. Let’s keep the NPP in power and we want unity in the NPP.”

Dr. Bawumia rounded off his campaign in the Greater Region over the weekend with a visit to the Obom Domeabra Constituency.

NPP flagbearer elections: Bawumia, Alan, one other face vetting panel today

Ahead of the highly anticipated primaries of the New Patriotic Party, a comprehensive vetting roster has been unveiled by the party to assess and evaluate the candidates vying for various positions.

According to a statement issued by Secretary to the National Presidential Vetting Committee, Evans Nimako, the vetting will take place from today, July 3, 2023, to July 6, 2023.

The first batch of candidates to face the panel today includes Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade and Industry Minister Alan K Kyerematen, and Energy Expert Kwadwo Poku.

Dr. Bawumia is making his first attempt to vie for the NPP flagbearer position, after serving as the running mate and Vice President under President Nana Akufo-Addo for two terms.

Mr. Kyerematen, popularly known as Alan Cash, has attempted to vie for the NPP flagbearer position twice in the past. The first time was in 2007, during the party’s primary elections for the 2008 general elections. The second attempt was in 2014, when he contested for the NPP flagbearer position ahead of the 2016 general elections. This becomes his third attempt to vie for the position.

Mr. Poku is a newcomer to the NPP flagbearer race, having declared his intention to contest earlier this year.

The second day of the vetting will see three more aspirants appearing before the committee. They are former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The remaining aspirants will undergo the vetting on July 5 and 6. They are former Food and Agriculture Minister Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former MP for Asante Mampong Edward Addai-Nimo, Economist Kofi Konadu Apraku, and former Railways Minister Joe Ghartey.

The party has appealed to all presidential aspirants to respect the timetable and participate actively in the vetting process, which is crucial for assessing their visions, policies, and plans for the country.

As of now, 10 candidates have successfully filed their nominations for the flagbearer race. However, only five candidates will make it to the final round of the vetting process.

During the vetting process, aspirants are provided with an opportunity to showcase their visions, policies, and developmental plans for the country to the National Presidential Vetting Committee of the NPP.

The presidential primaries, according to the party, will take place on November 4, 2023.

The Assin North by-election ended on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, with the NDC candidate, James Gyakye Quayson, garnering a total of 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of the total votes cast.

Despite a pending trial in which the State is charging James Gyakye Quayson with forgery and perjury, the residents of Assin North massively voted for the then-removed MP to represent them in parliament.

The MP-elect for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson is expected to be sworn in by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

NPP tried to bribe Gyakye Quayson to back off – Sammy Gyamfi reveals

Allegations have emerged from the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, suggesting that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) made attempts to bribe Gyakye Quayson in a bid to persuade him to withdraw from the Assin North elections. Mr Gyamfi’s claims have brought attention to the alleged behind-the-scenes maneuverings in the highly contested electoral race.

According to Sammy Gyamfi, despite the attempts to bribe and intimidate him into backing off, James Gyakye Quayson remained resolute and stayed true to his people.

Sammy Gyamfi in a Facebook post, described Quayson as someone who embodies both fearlessness and meekness, with an unwavering conviction to fight for justice against all odds.

“Folks, not much has been said about the relentlessness of the MP elect for Assin North, without which victory may have eluded us. They tried to bribe him to back off. When they failed, they threatened him with jail. But in all these things, he was unwavering in his commitment and love for his people.

“Always calm but confident; humble but courageous; sober but inspiring; meek but fearless. His personal conviction and determination to fight for justice against all odds, even at the risk of losing his civil liberties, is the reason we are smiling today,” he said.

The NDC National Communications Officer emphasized that it was Quayson’s determination and willingness to defend what he believed in, even at the risk of jeopardizing his civil liberties, that ultimately brought smiles to their faces.

Gyamfi urged others to join him in celebrating Hon. James Gyakye Quayson, whom he fondly referred to as the “First Gentleman of the good people of Assin North” and the “Old Soldier.”

Gyakye Quayson emerged as the winner of the Assin North by-election held on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

According to the Electoral Commission’s announcement, James Gyakye Quayson garnered a total of 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of the total votes cast.

His closest contender, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 12,630 votes, accounting for 42.15% of the votes.

Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party Ghana (LPG) secured 87 votes, which represented 0.29% of the overall tally.

I caught John Boadi giving bundle of cash to EC officer – NDC Communicator details

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Courage Makafiji Nunekpeku, has unveiled the purported approach employed by the NDC to thwart the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) alleged attempts to manipulate the Assin North by-election.

In the revelation made by Mr Makafiji Nunekpeku, the NDC strategically positioned teams at every polling station to closely observe the actions of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Their primary focus was to monitor the NPP’s interactions with the officials from the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) and detect any potential instances of vote-buying schemes near the polling stations.

He said the NDC deployed teams at all the polling stations to monitor the activities of the NPP, particularly their engagements with officials of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) and possible voting buying schemes close to the stations.

Makafiji Nunekpeku, who was the leader of the team at the polling station at Bramha DA Primary School, said that his team was able to stop the NPP from engaging in buying votes close to the polling station and also allegedly caught the former general secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, trying to induce officials of the EC.

“A team was put up to manage every polling station, and I was the leader of the team that was sent to Bramha DA Primary School. We got to the polling station at 5:00 am, and around 7:00 pm we saw people bringing in some huge ‘Ghana must-go’ bags, which were taken to a house nearby.

“We didn’t know what was in the bags, but later we were told they were full of money. We also realised that anytime someone came to the polling station, they were taken to that house before s/he comes to the polling station. So, we went there and told them that this can’t happen 50 metres close to where the voting was taking place. There was commotion there, and the police came to stop it.

“… some hours later, there was this long convoy of about 10 vehicles, led by John Boadu, the former secretary of the NPP… He (John Boadu) went to the presiding officer and gave them canned malt first, then he pulled out a bundle of money from his pocket and gave it to the guy. Immediately, John Boadu gave the money to him, I confronted him and told him he could not be doing that,” he narrated in Twi in an Accra FM interview on Friday, monitored by GhanaWeb.

He said that after confronting John Boadu, he (the former NPP general secretary) told him that the EC official was his in-law whom he had not seen for a long time and that was why he was giving him the money.

The NDC communicator added that as the confrontation was going on, another NPP woman came to tell him that his money was on the way coming, so he should stay calm, but he rebuked her.

He added that the confrontation led to the intervention of the police, who seized the money as evidence.

A video of the incident was played during the interview, and the police could be seen taking money, which is supposed to be the bribe, from an official of the EC.

Assin North constituents engage in one-week observation event to mock NPP with ‘Obaapanin Ama Elephant’ nickname

On the back of the recent by-election in the Assin North constituency, some residents believed to be affiliated with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have organized a one-week observation to mock the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) over their defeat.

A video circulating on social media shows a gathering of people engaged in a lighthearted demonstration to express their sentiments. The video, shared on Twitter by GHOne TV, captures the scene of what appears to be a typical funeral ground with several individuals seen taking part in the mock observance and engaging in symbolic gestures to express their sorrow, joy, and mockery of the election outcome.

Participants can be seen in the footage, engaging in traditional funeral customs. Some were dancing to funeral songs while others pretended to cry, mimicking the mourning rituals typically observed during funeral ceremonies.

Flyers were prominently displayed on canopies throughout the gathering, featuring an image of an elephant aged 74 years, a direct reference to the NPP’s symbol.

The flyer was titled “One Week Observation” with the inscription ‘Obaapanin Ama Elephant’ (also known as Obaatanpa), indicating that it was a one-week observation in honor of the NPP’s loss in the by-election.

The event details included the date, Sunday, July 2, 2023, the time, 8:00 am, and the venue, being Assin Breku in front of the Water Board.

The NPP lost Assin North by-election to NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson who has been sworn in as Member of Parliament for the constituency after the Electoral Commission declared him a winner in the election held on June 27, 2023, following the conclusion of the by-election.

Netizens troll NPP’s Charles Opoku with GHS200 note

In the aftermath of the recent Assin North by-election, certain individuals have taken to social media to mock Charles Opoku, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate.

Netizens, particularly Twitter trolls, have humorously dubbed the Two Hundred Ghana Cedi (GH¢200) banknote as “Charles Opoku” in light of allegations of vote-buying by the NPP, despite their candidate’s defeat.

Evangelist Richard Prah, a National Democratic Congress (NDC) communicator in the Ashanti Region, went on the radio to claim that the GH¢200 note has now become synonymous with Charles Opoku.

In a viral video, some voters from the area alleged that they were given 200 cedis in exchange for voting for the NPP candidate. They even composed songs in Twi, referring to the money as “Charles Opoku,” with lyrics that loosely translate to “I received money from Charles Opoku.”

Speaking on Ultimate FM in Kumasi, Prah said “Let me tell you something interesting about the Assin North elections, the NPP thought they could buy the elections, so they went with money but the people rejected them”

“In their minds, they thought they were buying the elections so they were going to buy it with money but this was rather a by-election as in By-Election, not a purchase as in going to buy something oo. They got it wrong. Now in Assin they call the 200 Cedis Charles Opoku because they gave money to sway the votes and it didn’t work. They were seen portraying the monies they got saying they were going to spend Charles Opoku’s monies” he added.

Accusations of vote-buying have surfaced from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the recently concluded elections.

According to reports, the ruling NPP allegedly provided some voters with 200 cedis, while the opposition NDC was said to be distributing 100 cedis per voter.

In the end, James Gyakye Quayson of the NDC emerged as the winner of the elections. He will once again represent the Assin North constituency, following the annulment of the 2020 elections by the Supreme Court due to allegations of dual citizenship held by him at the time of the elections.

Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has celebrated the manner in which Ghana’s democracy is working.

Citing the two recent by-elections – Assin North and Kumawu – Gabby concluded that “Democracy, indeed, works in Ghana.”

He congratulated the National Democratic Congress for winning the Assin North seat and the NPP for retaining the Kumawu seat in May following the death of an MP.

Gabby observed in a tweet dated June 29 that everything from the two by-elections pointed to the fact that the 2024 general elections were going to be very competitive.

He called on political parties to allow people make their choice freely at the polls and that they should have faith in key institutions of state tasked with conducting the pols – the Electoral Commission, security agencies and the judiciary.

Democracy, indeed, works in Ghana. Congratulations to the National Democratic Congress!

Last May, the ruling New Patriotic Party won and retained the Kumawu parliamentary seat in a by-election necessitated by the death of the MP.

    Congratulations to the NPP!

Yesterday, the NDC won and retained the Assin North seat, necessitated by a court decision. Both by-elections registered very high voter turnouts. Both parties performed better in their respective by-election victories than they did in the 2020 parliamentary contests there.

NPP won the 2023 Kumawu by-election with a much bigger margin than they did in the 2020 parliamentary race there. NDC also did much better yesterday in Assin North than in 2020.

This shows the strengths and readiness of both parties as we approach Dec 2024. The campaigns were of very high intensity, but the tensions were manageable and managed.

I see 2024 being very competitive. Let the nation approach the 2024 general elections demanding nothing but respect for our democracy from the political parties and their activists.

Let them treat the general election with some reasonable level of trust, confidence and mutual respect in the institutions of state, EC, security agencies, judiciary, etc.

Every election will be won and lost! Allow the rules to work. Let the people decide. Let their choices be respected. Let us believe in our institutions and in our democracy. Ghana wins! Eid Mubarak!

  • NPP loosing some of its core members – Bright Simons

NPP loosing some of its core members – Bright Simons

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has expressed his observation that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is experiencing the loss of key members, particularly at the grassroots level, in some of its core areas.

According to Simons, this decline in core members can be attributed to internal issues within the party’s systems.

Simons highlighted the recent Assin North by-election as an example, where he believes the NPP experienced a decrease in support compared to previous elections. He also mentioned the Kumawu by-election that took place the previous month, noting that a significant number of NPP voters were lost from what is traditionally considered the NPP’s stronghold, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) maintained its support base.

Mr. Simons further observed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) seems to have an advantage in terms of its usual support base in the Assin North constituency.

This advantage stems from the fact that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has experienced a decline in its traditional voting numbers in this particular constituency, which is considered a swing constituency.

Since 1996, the NPP has consistently garnered around 15,000 to 16,000 votes in the Assin North constituency, according to Mr. Simons.

“The core base [for NDC] is turning out and therefore they are sustained in their core base. The NPP on the order hand appears to be losing their core base in both elections.”

Mr Simons also linked the seeming depletion of the strong core of the NPP to “massive disgruntlement in their grassroots and to some extent the economic factors that are prevailing in the country.”

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, confidently declares his forthcoming triumph in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership race.

Agyapong is seen by analysts as a frontrunner in the race, along with Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and former trade minister Alan Kyerematen.

“I am going to win the NPP presidential race,” the Ken City Media CEO tweeted on July 1, 2023.

Aside Ken, Bawumia and Alan; there are seven other aspirants in addition to the three. The party on June 30 inuagurated a committee led by former Speaker of Parliament, Mike Oquaye to vet the aspirants in the coming week.

It is largely expected that if all 10 aspirants pass the vetting stage, a preliminary election to whittle down the number to five will take place before the main election is held in November this year.

  • NDC’s win in Assin North by-election a sign of victory in 2024 election – Dr Kojo Asante

NDC’s win in Assin North by-election a sign of victory in 2024 election – Dr Kojo Asante

The Director of Programmes and Policy Engagement at CDD-Ghana, Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante, has stated that the recent victory of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Assin North Constituency by-election has boosted the party’s confidence for the 2024 general election.

Dr. Asante believes that the party’s victory provides them with a sense of competitiveness as they approach the upcoming general elections.

“I think we are a long way from December 07, 2024. So, there are still many things to resolve. The NPP’s own internal party primaries have to be resolved to know who’s their candidate. That would help assess the strength of the candidates going into the election.

“For me, this [Assin North] election does give the NDC some more confidence about its own sense of competitiveness going into the 2024 election,” he said.

Dr. Asante suggests that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should learn from its mistakes in the by-election.

He emphasized the need for the party to reassess its approach to utilizing the advantages of being in power, warning against creating impunity among voters as allegedly witnessed in Assin North, as it could have negative consequences.

Regarding the issue of vote-buying during elections, Dr. Asante proposed conducting undercover investigations to expose those involved.

He believes that relying solely on individuals voluntarily reporting such cases would be challenging, making it necessary to take proactive measures to address the issue.

“I’ve tried to press on the Special Prosecutor who is charged with dealing with politically exposed persons to get into the space because I really think it’s not just about vote-buying. I think it’s vote selling and vote-buying.

“So, I think this example has to be set in terms of even the citizens who are also receiving the money. But I think the tactics should also include undercover because you’re not going to really get people coming forward to say we’re receiving cash,” he added.

Afriyie Akoto obtains tractor deal for Ghana

A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has successfully secured a tractor manufacturing plant deal for Ghana, aiming to enhance mechanized farming and promote agricultural growth.

The deal is expected to benefit other countries in the West African sub-region as well.

Discussions between Dr. Akoto and Hattat Traktör directors during his visit to Turkey focused on creating an enabling environment for the business, policy formulation, and accessibility and affordability issues.

Dr. Akoto, emphasizing Africa’s potential as an investment destination, highlighted the benefits of establishing the manufacturing plant in Ghana, including access to the ECOWAS community market.

The directors of Hattat Traktör plan to visit Ghana to present their proposal officially to the government. Hattat Traktör, established in 1998, produces tractor models with advanced technology and has received awards for its designs and performance.

Dr. Akoto, prioritizing the agricultural sector, believes public funding and mechanized farming can drive Ghana’s economic development.

The growth of mechanization in Ghana’s agricultural sector has been relatively low, and efforts to modernize and increase mechanization are crucial for sustainable productivity.

The potential establishment of the Hattat Traktör assembling plant in Ghana would significantly contribute to mechanized farming, bolstering food security in the country and the ECOWAS community at large.

Ntim Fordjour denies money-sharing allegations during Assin North by-election

Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has refuted accusations of distributing money with the intention of influencing voters during the recently concluded Assin North by-election in the Central Region.

He emphasised that he did not participate in any such activities and urged the public to dismiss such allegations.

In a recent Facebook post, the Deputy Education Minister stated that the allegation, purportedly spread by Joshua Akamba, the former National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, is false.

“My attention has been drawn to a false and malicious allegation made by Joshua Akamba.”

“I wish to state categorically that I never engaged in vote buying nor did I share money or goods before or during the Assin North by-election.”

Claims of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) engaging in vote-buying during the by-election have been refuted and dismissed.

The opposition NDC, has accused the governing party of giving out monies to some constituents to woo them to cast their vote for Charles Opoku.

The Director of Communications for the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah says the claims are false.

In response to the allegation made by the NDC’s National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi on JoyNews, he said, “Sammy went on a little run there to talk about lies and government inducement or party inducement, you see, those things are just not true”.

He rather expressed worry for future elections if political parties would peddle falsehoods as done by the NDC.

He challenged the NDC to come clean on the supposed lies that the NPP is said to have told during their campaigns.

According to Mr Ahiagbah, the NDC rather peddled lies even in their central campaign message to the constituents.

“I can tell you two grand lies or perhaps three or even four that the NDC peddled. The central proposition to the people was that one – they [NDC] want them to vote for the NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson because government wants to remove him from Parliament so we [NPP] can have a way to legalise LGBTQ in Ghana – blatant falsehood but that was their message.”

Assin North road project repotedly abandoned after by-elections

The rapid development of roads and other crucial infrastructure in the Assin North Constituency has reportedly come to a standstill prior to the upcoming by-election in the area.

According to reports, a significant number of contractors, who were appointed by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, have abandoned the ongoing projects and left the construction sites despite receiving funds from the government.

Peace FM shared a video showcasing an unfinished road development project in Assin Akonfudi, a community within the Assin North Constituency.

While a large portion of the road had undergone grading, only one side had been coated with a black substance, which could be tar or bitumen.

Interestingly, the substance has also been applied directly onto bare sand at certain points without the presence of gravels, unlike other sections of the road.

The residents according to Peace FM have been complaining bitterly about the abandonment of the road.

They are saying that the government was only deceiving them into voting for their candidate in the by-election.

    About the Assin North election:

According to the Electoral Commission’s announcement, James Gyakye Quayson garnered a total of 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of the total votes cast.

His closest contender, Charles Opoku of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 12,630 votes, accounting for 42.15% of the votes.

Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party Ghana (LPG) secured 87 votes, which represented 0.29% of the overall tally.

The by-election in Assin North was held to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant following a legal battle that questioned Quayson’s eligibility to hold office due to dual citizenship concerns.

  • Alan Kyerematen set to engage over 200,000 NPP delegates through cluster meetings

A Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Alan Kyerematen, plans to connect with Party delegates through a series of cluster meetings across the nation. This intensive campaign tour aims to gather widespread support for his bid for the presidency.

With the Party’s November 4, 2023 Presidential primaries approaching, the former Trade and Industry Minister, Mr. Alan Kyerematen, has set his sights on engaging each delegate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) individually. Through these interactions, he intends to provide comprehensive insights into his ambitious Great Transformational Plan (GTP).

A statement issued by Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Press Secretary to Alan Kyerematen, announcing the tour, said the ground-breaking cluster delegates meetings would see the presidential-hopeful engaging with over 200,000 NPP delegates.

The cluster constituency delegate meetings will serve as a platform for Mr. Alan Kyerematen to demonstrate his dedication to collaborative idea-sharing and working in unison with the people. These efforts are geared towards achieving victory in the upcoming November primaries and ultimately in the national elections of 2024.

“This innovation is expected to change the dynamics of Aspirant and Delegate interactions, giving diverse delegates from different constituencies a unique opportunity to meet, fraternize, and share experiences from differing perspectives,” the statement said.

Starting from the Greater Accra Region, the cluster engagements will kick off on Monday, 3rd July 2023, and subsequently expand to cover other regions in the country.

The cluster meetings with delegates is fashioned along constituencies with contiguous borders and common characteristics.

This strategic arrangement aims to maximize interaction and cooperation among party members.

They will help delegates and the presidential hopeful together, “devise winning strategies towards

the A4P goal of building a strong partnership for power between the NPP and the public,” the statement stated.

It added that “participation in the durbars is expected to lift the spirits of the delegates and the rank and file of the Party, renewing hope that ‘Together, We Will Win’ the 2024 General and Presidential Elections to transform the fortunes of Ghana.”

Alan Kyerematen’s profile as a former Trade and Industry Minister adds weight to his bid as a presidential candidate hopeful for the NPP, as majority of party members see him as the best candidate to the 2024 presidential elections.

  • NPP UE/R Council Elder names Bawumia as popular choice among floating voters

NPP UE/R Council Elder names Bawumia as popular choice among floating voters

Renowned Educationist and member of the Upper East Regional Council of Elders of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Robert Ajene has argued that the right person to lead the party in the 2024 General Elections as flag bearer is Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

He stressed that the Vice President has proven that he has the capacity to lead, and is, therefore, the favourite of floating voters whose votes will tilt the scales in the NPP’s favour in 2024.

“Bawumia has distinguished himself that he can do the work. He makes the canvassing easy. I think many delegates believe he is the right person to lead the party in the next election…

“He is somebody who will get all the floating voters who have lined up already waiting for him. And if you say Bawumia, they say: “We know him. This is what he is doing. He is what can do it”.

But if you say the other man, they will say: “Ah! What has he done to deserve this?” Then you’ll be whipping the donkey with the wrong cane so you won’t get it to move,’ he argued in an interview with Bolgatanga-based Dreamz FM’s State of Our Nation programme recently.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former Trade Minister Alan Kyeremanten are considered front-runners in the flagbearership race of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). But a massive endorsement from various quarters within the party seems to put the Vice President ahead of Mr Kyeremanten.

A special Delegates Conference will be held later in August to prune down the number of aspirants to five given that 10 persons have so far successfully filed to contest.
