  • The Animal Farm: A sad reality of today’s NPP

Can we really toe this path as a people whose very essence is premised on freedom, equality, and accountability? Can we? Have we suddenly stooped too low to make some people more equal and greater than the rest of the family?

    Background

On August 13, 2022, an event was held in the Metropolis of Kumasi, Ashanti Region. The program, which was an all-inclusive health walk for friends of Alan Kyeremanteng climaxed with speeches from great party men.

Hon. Hopeson Adorye, a party stalwart and a former parliamentary candidate for Kpone Katamanso also spoke. Sadly, however, his speech which was a rallying cry for patriots was misconstrued by opponents as a divisive and bigot statement —a development that generated widespread condemnation and chastisement so much so that, he had to make a press release.

Mr. Hopeson Adorye has since been referred to codes of the party which sort of outlaw his utterance and or any other utterances of that magnitude in the party. In fact, the office of the General Secretary of the party has supposedly called him to order and is currently exploring befitting sanctions for his action.

    Our take

How these protocols and codes suddenly appeared from nowhere to implicate and discipline Mr. Adorye is a development that cast doubt over our widely touted democracy spirited in freedom. Sincerely, this smack was meant for someone bigger, not Mr. Hopeson Adorye. I mean, who has not seen or heard Chairman Wontumi talk about the obvious romance he has for the Vice President? Who hasn’t heard the campaign songs he is singing for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia?

What about the declaration Mr. Aziz Futah, the National Nasara coordinator made? What disciplinary actions or chastisements were reserved for these people? Hon. Samuel Atta-Kyea suggested that the Vice President be made the flagbearer and Alan Kyeremanteng his running mate, we were asked to laugh over it; Nana Obiri Boahen, the former Deputy General Secretary is very public about his wish for the Vice President’s candidature; we see and hear all of these, but we mostly label them as mere praises born out of venerations for the Vice President.

All these people and many other party faithfuls, publicly made varied statements which to a large extent, supported or endorsed Dr. Bawumia for the flagbearership race; these, they did and still do without any malice and without having the all-embracing arms of the law clamp down on them. But when someone from Alan’s bloc says something, he is taken on and the long and sharp claws of the party’s structures begin to clatter for action. Is this the kind of party we wish to build going forward? I mean, for a party that is preparing to secure an unprecedented feat, divisive administration aimed at victimizing other Patriots is definitely way below the bar. We are not breaking anything with this attitude, for whoever wins the race, will need the other bloc for the long battle that neighs.

It has always been long service, commitment, and loyalty —so it shall remain! The God of Alan will speak…

  • NPP gives former executives 2 weeks to hand over party vehicles, other valuables

Former regional and constituency executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been given a week ultimatum to turn over any party vehicles and other items they may still be in possession of.

The party in a letter signed by the newly elected General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah explained that the decision is as a result of a widespread concerns and complaints by current executives to the effect that some of their predecessors still have in their custody party vehicles and other assets.

According to the Mr. Frimpong Koduah, the action of the ex-party officers has rendered newly elected executives handicapped in the performance of their duties.

The party has thus instructed the national treasurer to supervise the retrieval of all assets from former regional executives of the party.

The latest directive comes barely a month after the party held its national executive elections.

  • Why Owusu Bempah has stopped praying for Akufo-Addo

The Leader and Founder of Glorious Word and Power Ministries International, Rev Isaac Owusu Bempah,  has said he has stopped praying for President Akufo-Addo, the man he spiritually backed in opposition until he ascended unto the highest office of the Presidency in 2016.

According to him, he used to be close to the president, but today, there has been a gap between them.

He said he has stopped praying for a president, and never will he pray for any regime that emerges on the political scene going forward.

Speaking on Accra-based Okay FM, the man of God advised that the president should, as a matter of urgency, gather some men of God to intercede on his behalf because what is happening in the country is not normal.

“This is not to disrespect the president, but I have stopped praying for the president like I used to do. I (used) pray for the president and that God should protect him and make sure that his tenure is successful; to pray for the president like I used to do some time ago, I have stopped doing that,” Rev Owusu Bempah said.

“Like Saul, Samuel and David in the Holy Bible as instances, Nana Addo has turned away from God. He is no longer the man ruling the country because he has become disobedient like Saul in the Bible,” Owusu Bempah added.

He noted that no political party – whether NDC or NPP – can be able to make it without spiritual backing.

“If you claim to be of God, then let the people of God back you with prayers; if you claim to believe in other gods, then let your magicians intercede for you like King Pharaoh because, without power, you can never succeed in life,” he stressed.

When asked what has brought about the ‘bad’ blood between him and the president to the extent that he has stopped interceding for him, he explained that, as a man of God, he is willing and ready to intercede for anybody who approaches him for spiritual help and direction but “when I see that after praying for you, you do not have any belief in the prayer, I will just withdraw and stay within my lane.

“I am human, and if after fighting to do whatever that you want, you decide not to mind and appreciate whatever I have done for you, therefore, you keep disregarding me, [I won’t mind you again].

“It is very painful to go all out and help someone to achieve some status in life, and later the person behaves like you have been rejected; it makes you feel that you have fought and done all that you needed to do in vain. I am not saying if I do something bad, nobody should confront me or the law so be twisted to favour me, no, but at least the person should be able to remember whatever I have done for him; the person should remember that if not for this individual, I would not have achieved such status.

“I do not want the glory or recognition for myself, no. When President Akufo-Addo mentioned my name during his victory speech, I took that recognition for the Lord; what I mean is that when you start with God, you need to finish with him. The battle is the Lords should be the altar and finisher of your faith…,” Rev Owusu Bempah explained further.

  • We won’t spare anyone who will try to disrupt Bawumia’s flagbearership bid NPP MP

Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore Constituency, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, has sent out a warning that anybody who tries to make things difficult for the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to succeed President Akufo-Addo won’t be spared.

According to him, Dr Bawumia is loved in the Ashanti region, therefore, he will lead a charge on people who will try to make things unduly difficult for the Vice President’s emergence as NPP flag bearer.

Speaking on Wontumi TV on Wednesday, July 20, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye noted that, some rift between the people of the Ashanti region and the MPs is gradually creating disaffection for the Vice President, who hitherto is loved by the people in the Ashanti region.

“I believe we need to break the eight with Dr Bawumia, and I will stand by Dr Bawumia on any day but if you make things difficult for Dr Bawumia, we are not going to keep quiet and spare you.

“The current happenings in the party will create problems for Dr Bawumia if we don’t speak about it, because the Vice President is loved by the Ashantis. The Ashantis want the Vice President as the flagbearer of NPP but what is happening is creating some hatred for him and we won’t allow it to spoil his chances,” Dr Nana Ayew Afriye explained.

The MP had earlier served a warning that he will speak against all the happenings creating some disaffection between the MPs and the people of Kumasi.

“When I start going hard on the government, nobody should talk to me.”

Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, MP, Suame, was attacked by some angry residents within his constituency over the poor nature of the roads on Monday, July 18.

The MP, who was in his constituency was accosted by the angry residents with some throwing various items in his direction and hooting at him.

It took the timely intervention of the Police to calm tension and shield the MP from harm.

The residents had organised a demonstration and called on authorities to ensure work resumes on the stretch.

After escaping the attack, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu addressed the media, and assured stakeholders that efforts were being put in place to complete work on the road as early as possible.

He also said he understood the anger of his constituents.

“If they are really angry that it has been a while since the scraping of the surface and the dust is killing them, certainly when they see any government official, they will vent their spleen on the person. So I am not worried,” Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.

The regional elections would be held on 28th May 2022 in Ho.

  • No voters register available; 2 days to Ashanti Region NPP elections

Four candidates in the upcoming elections to elect new executives to run the affairs of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, have petitioned the national executive body of the party to postpone the elections scheduled for Friday, May 27, 2022, so as to enable them deal with some irregularities.

The four petitioners, all aspiring to be the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP are Oheneba Kofi Adum Bawuah, Robert Asare Bediako, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah and Kwabena Owusu Aduomi.

The incumbent Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako has not endorsed the petition but in principle, all the four have endorsed the petition spearheaded by Oheneba Kofi Adum Bawuah.

Bawuah presented the petition to the party national headquarters in Accra on Tuesday [May 24, 2022].

Bawuah strongly called for a postponement until the issues are resolved as to him, it was unacceptable for example that with just two days to the elections, the electoral register is not available to each of the candidates.

He has decided to advise himself and stay out of the elections as another form of protest, if the national headquarters does not resolve the issues and allow the elections to go ahead with the outstanding issues, something he said could have dire consequences for the party in the 2024 elections.

The contest for the Ashanti Regional chairmanship of the NPP has gained momentum.

Although there are other positions at stake in the upcoming regional delegates conference, the one that is being fiercely contested is the regional chairmanship, which has five party stalwarts battling it out in a who-is-who affair.

The frontrunners are Chairman Odeneho Kwaku Appiah (COKA) and Bernard Antwi Boasiako a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi.

    Reasons for petition

Among the reasons for the petition asking for the postponement is the unavailability of the voters register to aspirants for them to know the voters with two days to the elections on Friday.

They have also raised issue with the venue for the elections – the premises of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC).

The candidates are of the view that the venue, which is a place for running government business, does not sit well for the party to organise it’s regional elections there as it qualifies as incumbent government abuse in using state/government facility for political party event/activity.

Their third issue is that of a conflict of interest argument, where they have accused the chairman of the Election Committee, Simon Osei Mensah who is the also Ashanti Regional Minister of conflict of interest.

They have alleged that, Mr Osei Mensah is a relative of one of the candidates, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, who is the incumbent chairman seeking re-election and insists that Mr Osei Mensah has openly declared his support for Boasiako and has openly been campaigning for him, even though he is the chairman of the election committee.

Chairman Wontumi before becoming Regional Chairman was constituency chairman for Bosomtwe where Osei Mensah also served as Member of Parliament. According to Bawuah, the two of them are known to have worked together very well and that it was fair that, Osei Mensah stays away as chairman of the election committee on grounds of conflict of interest.

Kofi Adum Bawuah for instance has said they were only made aware that Mr Osei Mensah was chairing the election committee just last week [Saturday] hence their inability to challenge his position earlier.

They want the leadership of the party at the national headquarters to intervene and postpone the election scheduled for Friday, May 27, 2022 as the “shenanigans” leading to the elections was embarrassing.

With two days to the elections, the petitioners argued that, they don’t even have the electoral register.

    Ashanti Region has 47 constituencies.

Each constituency has 17 representatives/voters when it come to the regional elections. It is made up the 10 elected constituency officers and seven others appointed by the constituency executives.

There is also one representative each from all the recognised bodies of the party in the region such as NASARA and the Tertiary Education Confederacy (TESCON).

All these delegates, the petitioners argue are supposed to be on the voters register [album] but they don’t have the register as of Tuesday night [May 24, 2022].

To them, since they followed the constituency elections, there could be the assumption that they know each of the 10 elected officers from the constituencies but the remaining seven from each constituency appointed by the executives are not known, same as the representatives from the recognised bodies.

“We can’t even contact them to send our campaign messages to them since we don’t know them with two days to the election,” Bawuah lamented.

Bawuah for instance, speaking on the Boiling Point radio talk programme on Accra based Oman FM on Tuesday night [May 24, 2022] monitored by Graphic Online agreed the timing between the constituency elections and the regional one could be a factor since many of the constituencies are still in the process of appointing their seven representatives.

But that is the more reason I think the election should be postponed, he said.

With the exception of the incumbent Chairman Wontumi who has not raised any issue since, all of these seem be working out to give him an advantage, all the other aspirants are in on this one with me, Bawuah said.

“If national does not act on this, I for instance will decide to advise myself and step aside and will not continue with the contest as a form of a protest,” Bawuah added.

He said these are some of the reasons that accounted for voter apathy in the 2020 general elections in the Ashanti Region.

  • ‘Each man for himself, God for the select few’ – How Atta Mills described NPPs property owning democracy’

“Property owning democrats,” the tagline of the governing New Patriotic Party, NPP, known to be the capitalists, has been making rounds on social media after some portions of the Last Will and testament of the party’s former General Secretary, Sir John, was made public.

The Will details how much wealth Sir John, real name Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, willed to his children and nephews.

Some portions relating to prime lands in Accra have dominated discussions in mainstream and on social media. Many Ghanaians were outraged after a signed Executive Instrument, E.I. by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, declassifying parts of the Achimota Forest as a forest reserve were made public.

Some social media users accused the political class of an attempt to sell the lands to themselves and their cronies. The government has denied the accusations, saying it was only returning part of the land to its rightful owners.

But Sir John’s Will contains four parcels of specified and unspecified acres of land in the Achimota Forest, which the late politician bequeathed to named persons.

Prior to the 2008 presidential and parliamentary elections, Professor John Evans Atta Mills [of blessed memory], who at the time was contesting the elections as an opposition leader with Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, described the NPP’s mantra of property owning democracy as “each man for himself and God for the select few.”

In a campaign video of the NDC, the late Prof Atta Mills said:

“Nana Addo is talking about having fought for democracy, [and] having fought for human freedom. It is quite clear that they are following their tradition property owning democracy, as they call themselves. That is each man for himself and God for the select few.”

  • Abankwa-Yeboah to contest NPP chairman position

The National Treasurer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Abankwah-Yeboah, has officially declared his intention to contest the National Chairmanship.

He said if given the nod, he would use the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism to quickly settle all disputes within the party especially at the constituency level.

That, according to him, would prevent aggrieved members from resorting to the law court.

    Meeting with executives

Mr Abankwah-Yeboah made his intention known when he met some regional and constituency executives drawn from various parts of the country in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital, last Wednesday.

He said the purpose of the meeting was to make his intention known to the executives since he had diligently served the party well in all the positions he held and would be soliciting their support to win the chairmanship slot as he was ready to put in his application for the position anytime that bid would be opened.

Mr Abankwah-Yeboah indicated that he would bring everybody within the party on board at all levels to make it possible for the NPP to win the 2024 general election and remain in power.

He said he would be fair, neutral, compassionate and a unifier in dealing with all members of the party on all party issues.

    Party decisions

Mr Abankwah-Yeboah also gave an assurance that he would adhere to the decisions made by the top hierarchy of the party.

That, he stated, would make it possible for members of the party to benefit from anything that would be done by the party.

He pledged to empower members of the party especially at the grass roots with viable economic skills training initiatives so that they would be able to establish themselves.

On welfare system of the party, the aspiring national chairman said he would create an effective and efficient welfare scheme that would capture both current and past executives who sometimes felt neglected.

He therefore appealed to them to give him their maximum support to enable him to win the chairmanship to lead the party to one-touch victory in the 2024 polls.

    Support

The Eastern Regional First Vice Chairman of the party, Alhaji Baba Umar Bodinga, who represented the Regional Chairman, Kingston Akomeng Kissi, urged regional and constituency executives to support the bid of Mr Abankwah-Yeboah.

According to him, ever since Mr Abankwah-Yeboah became the National Treasurer of the party, he had not disappointed the party but worked diligently in the interest of the party.

  • Dome Kwabenya, Odododiodio and other identified hotspots in NPP constituency elections

The New Patriotic Party’s annual delegate conference at the various constituencies commences today, Thursday, April 28, 2022.

The five-day event scheduled to end on Monday, May 2, 2022, will conclude with the election of the party’s executives across the various constituencies.

Preceding the constituency delegates conference was the election of the polling station and electoral area officials of the party, who will, in turn, elect the constituency officials.

From the onset of the election of polling station officials, several accusations were levelled at some party officials of deliberately denying application forms to some candidates in a bid to favour other candidates.

The alleged acts of sabotage which led to disagreements caused elevated levels of violence in several constituencies across the country.

Events from the election of the polling station and electoral area officials, have left the NPP at a tipping point of a likely outbreak of misunderstanding in its constituency elections.

    Dome Kwabenya

The Dome Kwabenya Constituency has been identified by the NPP as one of four flashpoints in the Greater Accra Region ahead of the annual delegates conference.

This, according to the NPP’s Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Divine Agorhom, has caused the party to liaise with the security agencies to put in place measures to forestall any unforeseen development.

“We’ve engaged him [the IGP]. He will be detailing his men to provide security. They have just a few flashpoints for which they would have to beef up on the numbers. Ordinarily, I would have said that the Police Command in the districts should be enough for this except for areas whereas I said earlier we consider flashpoints,” he told Joy News.

“So far, they [the flashpoint constituencies] are just about four; you know we have quite a volatile situation at Odododiodio, also Dome Kwabenya, you know the situation there. I think these two we can put on air; the rest we don’t want they themselves to even know we consider their constituencies as flashpoints,” he added.

According to some NPP members in the Dome Kwabenya Constituency, there have been deliberate attempts to expunge names of aspirants aligned to the current MP, Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, from the constituency’s register ahead of the election.

Some disgruntled party members have sent the matter before the Kwabenya Circuit Court. The applicants have asked the court to grant an injunction stopping the election from taking place until the matter is resolved.

    Akuapem North Constituency

There has been growing tension in the Akuapem North NPP between members aligned to the incumbent MP, Ama Dokua and the current Director-General of the National Lotteries Authority, Sammy Awuku.

During the election of polling station officials, members from both sides accused each other of resorting to intimidation, abuse and sabotage against their preferred candidates.

The Constituency Women’s Organizer of Akuapem North, Awo Boatemaa, speaking of the situation during the election of polling station executives, said, “I wish you were here to witness what is going on; it is unsavoury. When the election started, armed men invaded the town, and we’ve not enjoyed any peace ever since.”

She added that “I hear Sammy Awuku wants to contest for the MP in Akuapem North. So, when you go to vote for the polling station executives, they tell you to vote for the supporter of Sammy Awuku or Dokua. The election is not an NPP election. It is a Sammy Awuku and Ama Dokua election.”

The polling station election in Akuapem North is said to have witnessed men clad in police and military uniforms carrying whips, guns and knives intimidating electorates to vote for polling station executives who owe allegiance to a candidate.

    Yendi Constituency

In the Yendi Constituency, a fierce competition between the incumbent MP, Farouk Mahama and the Chief Executive Officer for the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Hajia Abibata Shani Mahama Zakaria, has led to unease in the constituency.

The same allegations of intimidation, sabotage and abuse were common between the two factions and their supporters during the election of polling station executives.

At an event held to wrap up campaigning ahead of the constituency executive elections, accusations were traded between the 1st vice-chairman, Baba Gambari and an aspiring constituency chairman, Alhaji Baba Gazale, over the confusion in the constituency.

While the 1st vice-chairman made allegations of hatred against the incumbent MP by some officials, Alhaji Baba also levelled a counteraccusation of efforts to bring instability into the party.
There have been several allegations of album manipulation in the Yendi constituency.

At a press conference held on Sunday, April 24, 2022, Yendi constituency chairman Saddick Nam said, “We are appealing to the party leadership to suspend the elections or change the electoral album. If nothing is done about the situation before the election day, we will take matters into our hands.”

    Subin Constituency

In the Subin Constituency, the same allegations of album manipulation led some members and disgruntled candidates to stage a protest during the election of polling station executives.

The protesters went on to lock up the party’s constituency office while threatening to thwart the operations of the party if their names, which allegedly had been deleted from the party album, were not restored.

    Fomena Constituency

In the Fomena Constituency, some members of the party have been up in arms against what they say are attempts to impose the independent Member of Parliament for the area, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, on the party as a parliamentary candidate.

The situation led to a protest by the party members, who ended up painting the constituency office of the NPP in the colours of the opposition NDC amidst threats to defect from the party.

    Other constituencies with pending issues

With the same problems and allegations of deliberate attempts to manipulate albums in favour of some candidates, several constituencies have also experienced agitations and confrontations between party members.

Some of these constituencies include Bantama, Obuasi, Kade, Juaben North and South, Manhyia, Abirem, Tano North, Hemang, Ahafo and Kwadaso.

  • Remain united – Dr Moussa urges NPP members

A member of the Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Jebir Kebir Moussa, has advised the party faithfuls to be disciplined and united to break the eight-year change of governance and political administration.

He charged the members to show commitment in their work to enable the party to maintain power in the 2024 general election.

He said the NPP had the vision, capacity and good programmes to manage the economy to provide better standards of living for every Ghanaian; hence, the need for every member to work towards winning the next general election.

    Get-together

Dr Moussa gave the advice when he organised a get-together for party faithfuls and a cross- section of the people from the Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano South East and Ahafo Ano North constituencies last Saturday.

The event held at Barniekrom, a farming community in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region, was attended by about 400 people.

Also present were some traditional leaders, and Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, one of the aspirants for the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairmanship position.

    MP, DCE honoured

Dr Moussa, who is also a prominent farmer, also honoured the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ahafo Ano South West, Johnson Kwaku Adu, and the District Chief Executive (DCE), Joseph Bonsu, for their contribution to development in the area.

According to him, he monitored the activities of the two leaders, and came to the conclusion that they were up to their duties.

He urged them to continue to work harder and transform the area.

    Commendation

Mr Adu, on behalf of the people, lauded Dr Moussa for his generosity towards the party and his great affection for the people in the constituency.

He assured him that together with the DCE, they would forge ahead and continue to implement policies that would inure to the benefit of the people they served.

On the upcoming constituency elections of the party, he charged all aspirants to be tolerant, and remember that all they needed now was to protect the good image of NPP to make it more attractive to the people.

  • CJ directive: Must Manasseh and Prof. Azar ‘comment on every matter in Ghana?’ – NPP lawyer

Lawyer Gary Nimako, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s legal team has defended a recent directive by the Chief Justice, that cases of senior lawyers be heard before that of their juniors, citing an age-old practice.

Nimako made his views public via a Facebook post in which he chastised two people who have harshly critiqued the directive – i.e. Manasseh Azure Awuni and Prof. Stephen Asare, alias Kwaku Azar.

He lamented why it is that the two personalities always wanted to have a bite on ‘every matter in Ghana,’ before mounting his defence of the directive stating that it was to make junior lawyers better at practice.

“Sometimes I wonder whether it is important for Prof Azar (Professor Kwaku Asare) and Mr Manesseh Azure Awuni, to comment on every matter in Ghana.

“A little silence will save them some credibility. Every Practitioner in the Courts of Ghana knows that a lot of learning is undertaken in the Courtroom every day.

“It is not for nothing that some Lawyers decide to stay in the Courtroom to listen to advocacy when certain Lawyers are on their feet in court, even though they are unconnected to the case.

“So please, allow the Practitioners to learn in the Courtroom. There Is nothing wrong in the directive issued by the Honourable Chief Justice” Marfo’s post concluded.

Chief Justice, Kwesi Anin Yeboah in a recent circular directed judges to call cases of senior lawyers first.

He explained that the age-long practice is to afford junior lawyers the opportunity to learn from the senior lawyers.

    Below is the circular:

    To all trial court judges:

Observing age-old traditions of the BAR in calling cases in court

The Legal Profession, as we know, is steeped in traditions and ceremonies.

One of the traditions observed is the practice of calling cases of persons whose names are on the roll of Lawyers, in order of seniority of enrolment, notwithstanding the notion of equality at the Bar.

This practice, among other benefits, affords the young Lawyer the opportunity to learn from Seniors to whom they would not ordinarily be exposed to; thus, enriching the whole legal training experience beyond what is taught in Chambers and other places of work.

It has recently been drawn to my attention, that some Trial Court Judges are not observing this practice in court.

Whilst the right to call a case out of turn is not absolute and is exercisable subject to the convenience of the court, for the reasons mentioned above, I would request all Trial Court Judges to strictly adhere to this age-old tradition and resort to inviting applications from Seniors first.

I hope I can count on your cooperation.

  • Tamale Interchange is not a flyover – NPP MP clarifies

Deputy Majority Chief Whip who doubles as Tolon Member of Parliament Habib Iddrisu has maintained that the Tamale Interchange is not a flyover.

He explained that the project is an interchange and the first of its kind in Tamale, for that matter.

To him, it will boost trade, decongest the area and enhance the movement of vehicles.

“The Tamale interchange is the first of its kind in the Northern Region and will not only improve trade and regional integration because of the proximity to neighboring Burkina Faso but also improve traffic management in Tamale,” he said.

He commended the President for the project adding, he has done so well for the country.

To him, the achievements of the President is unprecedented.

He touched on the free Senior High School saying it has also provided opportunities for several people to access secondary education.

The interchange has about 1.1km of bridge and ramps, drainage works, streetlights, and 10km of Asphalt overlay around it.

In 2019, President Akufo-Addo, cut sod for the commencement of the multi-million dollar Tamale Interchange project, funded under the $2 billion China-Synohydro deal.

The project is aimed at enhancing inter-urban and national traffic flow, reducing the cost and risk of doing business, thereby enhancing trade within the regions.

  • Government should scrap deputy CEO positions at state-owned enterprises NPP MP

Nhyiaeso MP Dr Stephen Amoah has urged the government to remove all deputy head positions at state-owned agencies.

According to the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament, the deputy head positions are not required because the needed productivity is not derived from them.

“If I had my discretion, I would delayer all deputies in state agencies,” Dr Amoah said in an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile monitored by GhanaWeb.

“I am even of the view that some of these state agencies have no business having deputies … because we cannot derive the needed productively from them and the economy is a function of productivity and labour size,” he added.

Asked whether salaries of heads of state-owned enterprises should be reduced, he said, “I agree with you 100 per cent.”

Also, the MP indicated that government officials should stop using all fuel-consuming government vehicles.

“I will also let any Land Cruiser being used that is paid for by government, maintained by the government, fueled by the government be packed. So, when you are driving outside your region, you can use it, but in the capital towns, you use small cars. These are some of the things we all agree on,” he said.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, on March 24, 2022, announced some expenditure reduction measures aimed at reducing the pressure on the public purse as part of efforts to revive Ghana’s economy.

The minister said that the measures to be employed would include suspension of the purchase of imported vehicles, the suspension of all foreign travels except for important ones, cutting discretionary expenditure by an additional 10 per cent, a 50 per cent cut in fuel coupon allocations for all political appointees and heads of government institutions.

In addition, the government will cut down expenditure on its meetings and conferences by 50 per cent and suspend the establishment of new public sector institutions and new projects.

  • Hundreds of hardworking NPP members have silently resigned Musah Superior

General Secretary aspirant of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Iddrisu Musah Superior, is claiming that hundreds of youth and some hardworking members have left the party unofficially.

According to him, the mass silent resignation from the NPP is caused by neglect.

The former Mayor of Tamale observed that the situation was worrying and posed a major threat to the political fortunes of the party in 2024.

“…Hundreds of our hardworking party people who have been abandoned have either silently left or resigned unofficially from our party. They feel very neglected…,” he said in a statement.

Mr. Superior, therefore, holds the view that the only antidote in addressing these grievances and concerns that have forced hard-working people out from the party is the need for people with fresh ideas and capable of mobilizing the party in unity.

“…This situation calls for fresh ideas and a new face to re-recruit our disgruntled party people back to work for the party to win the 2024 elections…” He added

He assured that, “…I have a strategic plan to re-energize and mobilize our teeming grassroots unto victory…”

His comments come at a time some party footsoldiers are bleeding over a huge amount of money that has been given to media personality Afia Schwarzenegger by the Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare when they are hungry.

According to most of them who are lamenting on social media, their efforts have not paid off whereas those who never suffered with them in the trenches while in opposition are those large and in charge.

One person was critically injured while others sustained minor injuries at the Liberty Football Pitch in Dansoman during the acclamation of polling station executives in the Ablekuma West Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This was as a result of brutalities perpetrated by some party members during the exercise on Sunday, March 13.

  • How angry Fomena NPP youth repainted party office with NDC colours

In an attempt to tell executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that they are seriously against a move by the party to impose the second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Andrews Asiamah on them, the party youth in Fomena have painted the party office with NDC colours.

In a video which has since gone viral on social media, the youth are seen changing the traditional colours of white, blue and red to the colours of the largest opposition party Red, White, Green and Black.

The youth say their displeasure emanates from the fact that apart from attempts to impose a candidate on them for the 2024 Parliamentary elections, they have been disallowed to take part in the ongoing polling station election.

Apart from painting the office with NDC colours, they placed placards that read “let the constitution work, “no unopposed”, “let the constitution work” to drum home their demands of the party and its executives.

“We will resist any attempt by NPP party executives to impose the independent candidate together with his supporters on the faithful NPP supporters within the constituency,” a youth activist in Fomena said on February 23.

  • Blame the NPP MPs who voted for Bagbin for current challenges of government Gary Nimako

A member of the NPP Legal and Communications Team, Gary Nimako Marfo, has said that the two NPP MPs who voted for Alban Bagbin to be the Speaker of Parliament caused the government’s challenges.

He indicated that if the two New Patriotic Party (NPP) members of Parliament (MPs) had voted for NPP sponsored candidate, Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye, the government would not be having challenges moving on with its business.

He also said that the Assin North MP, who had an injunction for him to seize to hold himself as an MP, should also not have voted during the vote for the Speaker.

“… but where did we get to, why did we get to where we are now? … I blame the two members of Parliament on our side who voted for him [Alban Bagbin] as Speaker of Parliament. That’s the beginning of all these problems. We should not forget that on the day of the voting, an injunction had been secured in the Assin North case, served to the Clerk of Parliament.

“… we are now confronted with the situation where we have the Speaker who is on the side of the opposition, and it’s very clear. So clearly, if one person is absent, or two are absent, it means the party in power is in trouble of completing the government business,” Marfo said.

He said this in an interview on Joy News’ Newfile on Saturday, February 26, 2022, monitored by GhanaWeb.

On the way forward, he said the Speaker should be patient with the MPs, adding that there has to be some understanding among factions in the Parliament for the good of the country.

“What I think ought to happen is that Mr Speaker, Alban Sumana Bagbin, should please calm down a bit. It appears that the manner with which he is speaking, and his conduct and everything is going, I’m clear in my mind that he appears to be on some turf with his MPs and maybe the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament.”

“… But I have heard Honourable Joe Wise speak; I think there should be some form of cordiality between the two of them,” the NPP legal team member added.

  • NPP should let Fomena MP run unopposed NPP MP

Okaikoi Central MP Patrick Boamah urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership to let the MP for Fomena and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, run unopposed in the party’s primaries.

According to the NPP member of parliament, Amoako Asiamah has been a great asset to the NPP even though he is in parliament as an independent candidate.

Speaking on the floor of parliament on February 24, 2022, Boamah said his party must reward this loyalty by offering him his membership of the party back.

“May the New Patriotic Party recognise your support, contribution to the caucus and return you unopposed to run on the ticket of the NPP. God bless you,” asaaseradio.com quoted Boamah.

In response to the comments made by the Okaikoi Central MP, the Deputy Minority Leader, James Klutse Avedzi, urged the deputy speaker not to accept the nomination of the NPP since it might affect his chances of being speaker.

“Mr Speaker, our standing orders are clear that First and Second Deputy Speakers should not come from the same party. So, by accepting that, it’ll draw you into that party, and it’ll be a challenge for you [Fomena MP].

“So, Mr Speaker, [Second Deputy Speaker], reject that one because they have not nominated you; in fact, you’re not a member of the NPP. We [Minority caucus in parliament] nominated you to be Second Deputy Speaker, and it is better you accept our nomination than theirs [NPP] because theirs will draw you into trouble,” he said.

Some factions of the NPP have alleged that strong members of the party are trying to impose the Fomena MP as a candidate for the constituency in the 2024 elections.

Amoako Asiamah lost the party’s primaries for the 2020 election. He then registered to stand for the election as an independent candidate, which forced the party to sack him even though he was their incumbent MP.

  • NDC, NPP must come up with a national development plan for Ghana Prof Agyeman-Duah

Former UN Senior Governance Advisor, Prof Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has urged the two leading parties in Ghana, the NDC and NPP, to work together to come up with a national development plan for the country.

According to him, having a national document to guide the governance of Ghana will help speed up the development of the country, irrespective of which party is in power.

“I wish our two dominant parties can meet and somewhere merge their vision into one complete national vision, so whoever comes to power will be obliged to meet that vision.

“Whether we like it or not, NDC and NPP are the dominant parties, forget about the others, if they can agree on certain fundamentals, it will be one of the biggest victories,” asaaseradio.com quotes Agyeman-Duah.

The former UN senior governance advisor said Ghana must take advantage of our democracy to propel the country’s development to improve the livelihood of citizens.

“The first lesson has been learnt already and enshrined in our constitution, which is the avoidance of dictatorship. But on the development side, which is a critical side, what we can learn from Nkrumah, was his vision of long planning and sticking to it, that vision,” he added.

Ghana has a National Development Planning Commission whose duty is to advise the president on economic development and develop long-term national development plans for the country.

However, the commission’s role has been side-lined by successive governments who implement their campaign promises without thinking of its long-term effect on the country.

  • Party executives nomination should be done online NPP Deputy Gen. Sec.

The Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Obiri Boahene, has said that the party should have done the application for the polling station election online to avoid chaos.

According to him, this will help curb the phenomenon of party persons not getting access to nomination forms which is currently causing trouble among the grassroots of the party in some parts of the country.

“Consistently I have hammered home this point since 2020. I have been saying that nominations should be done online.

“In fact, in 2020, I supervised the party’s election in the Eastern Region, the Oti Region and the Greater Accra Region and I was informed that some persons were not getting forms to buy,” he said in Twi in an interview with Okay FM monitored by GhanaWeb.

Obiri Boahene further stated that the grievances of members for not being able to nominate persons they want to be executives at the grassroots was the reason behind the party losing some seats in parliament, because the aggrieved persons refused to vote for the party.

Meanwhile, there have been issues with the sale of nomination forms in some polling stations since the party began the processes to elect polling station executives, particularly in the Ashanti Region.

Scores of NPP supporters have besieged the offices of the party but have been told that the nomination forms for polling station executive have finished.

The NPP on February 14, 2022, released the processes to elect officers for the party at the polling station level.

According to the party, nomination forms for the election can be picked from February 19, 2022, to February 29, 2022, at a cost of GH¢10.

Vetting of candidates will be done between February 22, 2022, and February 24, 2022, with the election being held from February 25, 2022, to March 5, 2022, in more than 38,000 polling stations across the country.

  • We will regain our majority control in Parliament in 2024 Ntim assures NPP

The former first vice chairman and an aspiring national chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Stephen Ntim has assured the party members that he will make sure the party regains its full majority control in parliament in 2024.

He said this in the wake of challenges the party is facing in the hung parliament which has made it difficult to get their programs passed.

Addressing party members in the Greater Accra Region, he said the party lost many seats due to the inability of the party to resolve some of the internal grievances after the primaries. He said there are seats or constituencies that the NPP should not have lost and would make sure all those seats are won in 2024.

“We are going to have an effective and fair procedure in place to bring everybody on board after an internal election. We will put in measures that will be difficult for the losing side to say they will not work for the party. NPP as a party will work again to bring the needed development to the good people of Ghana. How can we sit here and say we do not have an MP on the ticket of NPP in Okaikwei North. We need that seat back in 2024 and we will do all in our power to win it.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) went into 2020 with 167 but ended the election with 137 while the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) also secured 137 seats.

However, Andrew Asiamah Amoako (24 February 1966) an NPP member but elected as an independent member of Parliament for Fomena has decided to do business with the NPP on the floor of Parliament giving the party a slim majority.

  • UG student death: We need better explanations – NPP communicator

A member of the New Patriotic Party‘s communication team, Ellen Ama Daako, has called for a better explanation of what exactly happened with the University of Ghana student who died from drowning over the weekend.

It was reported that a Level 100 student died in the school’s pool, with the management of the University confirming the news while adding that investigations have started into the incident.

“Management of the University of Ghana regrets to announce that a Level 100 male student of the University died around 4:40 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022, while using the swimming pool at the University’s Sports Directorate, in spite of attempts by pool guards to ensure his safety.

“We assure members of the University community and the bereaved family that Management is working together with the Police and the University Health Services to investigate the unfortunate incident,” the statement from UG said in part.

But reacting to the news while contributing to the Monday, January 31, 2022, edition of Good Morning Ghana monitored by GhanaWeb, Ellen Daako raised questions on what could have led to the student’s death.

She called for better explanations from the UG management, urging that they speed up investigations to bring closure to this matter.

“Such an accident. I call it an accident because anybody whose son enters the University, the maximum age, I presume, will be about 18, 19, by the laws of Ghana, that is an adult. We all don’t know the details, but I’ve seen that pool; it’s an Olympic-size pool meant to train even national athletes.

“And so, if you’re not a swimmer or haven’t trained to be a swimmer, and I’m not saying that is the issue here, sometimes, you have to be a bit careful. Now, as they said, investigations are going on, so they have to do and let us find out.

“What was the state of the young man? Was he intoxicated? Had he injected something that his reflexes couldn’t work? Which part of the pool was he in? What was his level of swimming? Is he a swimmer? I think we need better explanations for this,” she said.

  • Obiri Boahen rescinds decision to contest NPP National Secretary

Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Nana Obiri Boahen has backed down on his decision to contest for his party’s General Secretary position.

Ahead of the party’s official declaration for campaigning, Nana Obiri Boahen served to notice he was going to challenge the current General Secretary, John Boadu for his post.

According to him, he has gathered enough experience having served two consecutive terms in his deputy role and thus saw it right to elevate to the main secretary of the party.

“I have expressed an intention and in the fullness of time when the ban has been lifted, I will contest for the position of the general secretary of the New Patriotic Party.

“I have been the general secretary for two terms, the first time in the history of our tradition that an individual has occupied that position for two terms and certainly, I am matured enough now to be the general secretary for the New patriotic party and certainly, I will contest for that position when the ban is lifted,” he emphatically in a Joynews interview earlier this year.

In the latest development, however, Nana Obiri Boahen has served notice he will no longer be vying for the General Secretary position when the party conducts its next internal election.

Speaking on Thursday, November 11, 2021, Obiri Boahen further stated that he will be moving on from contesting a party executive position when the NPP goes to the polls.

He went on to reveal that his next line of dedication will be geared towards the campaign of a flagbearer candidate, whose identity he failed to disclose.

“I will no longer contest but I am bringing someone to the presidency. I am beating my chest; I am going to make history in this country. I Obiri Boahen, I am going to make history in this country.

“The history is that I have been deputy general secretary for two terms and that has never happened in Ghana before. The next history for me is that I am not going back to the party headquarters because of a change in agenda. I am bringing someone as the flagbearer.

“We are definitely going for the primaries and from all indications, the person I am bringing is going to win and when he wins, it will be a history for our tradition,” he stated.

He went on to drop hints that the said candidate hails from the northern part of the country and is of Mamprusi ethnicity.

Meanwhile, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has been tipped as a likely replacement for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo when he exits office.

The Vice President who hails from the northern region is equally of Mamprusi origin however it is not known if he is the same person Nana Obiri Boahen has committed to campaign for.

  • Boycott Komenda Sugar Factory demonstration – NPP urges youth

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Constituency in the Central Region, has asked its supporters to boycott a demonstration by the youth for the immediate reopening of the Komenda Sugar Factory.

A section of the youth in the KEEA have written to the Central Regional Police Command for permit to organise a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday, July 6, to demand the immediate reopening of the factory.

However, the NPP said the demonstration was politically motivated to create disaffection for government, regardless of efforts being made to get the factory to operate.

A press release copied to the Ghana News Agency in Cape Coast, signed by Mr Michael Botsio, the KEEA Communications Director of the NPP, said the demonstration was borne out of malice.

It alleged that the key leaders of the intended demonstration were members of the National Democratic Congress, hence the move was full of mischief.

The demonstration sought to create the impression that the non-functioning of the factory was the fault of the NPP-led government, the statement said, adding: “We find this most unfortunate and an affront to the intelligence of the people of KEEA.”

It, however, declared the Party’s support for any genuine move to get the defunct factory operational to create employment for the youth and spur economic growth.

“The NPP in KEEA shares in the frustration of the people of Komenda over the inability of the factory to operate. We also believe that the factory, when in operation, will create employment for the teeming youth and better the standard of living of the community and municipality,” the statement said.

It assured of government’s determination to revive the factory as negotiations were ongoing with private investors to achieve that goal.

“The government has never relented in its efforts to see the factory in operation and as a party we want to assure the teeming youth of KEEA that the strategic investor will certainly come on board as soon as possible,” it said.

“The Komenda Sugar Factory will come back to life.”

  • NPP must make an honest assessment of its governance Rev Opoku Oyinah

The immediate past chairman of the Church of Pentecost has said the governing New Patriotic Party‘s (NPP’s) failure to emerge out of the December 7 polls with a firm grip of parliament is a sign from God.

According to Apostle Prof Opoku Onyinah, this historic development is a message to the ruling party to go back to the drawing table and make an honest assessment of its governance.

Rev Opoku Oyinah made this known while delivering the official sermon at the NPP’s thanksgiving service, December 27, 2020.

He also advocated for a united front between the two major parties in parliament to ensure peace and satisfy the Ghanaian people.

Rev Opoku Oyinah told the gathering at the forecourt of the State House that NPP and NDC must work together in the next Parliament because that is what Ghanaians seem to be telling the two main parties.

The NPP used the interdenominational service to thank God for the party’s election victory, although the NDC is challenging the claim and heading to court on Wednesday with an election petition.

While touching on the Free SHS policy, he added that the policy seems to have resonated with several Ghanaians.

Thus, he remains hopeful that the government will replicate the policy in other sectors to ensure that every Ghanaians benefits from the national cake.

In the aftermath of the December 7 parliamentary elections, the ruling party emerged with 137 seats while the opposition NDC also captured 137 seats.

However, there is one Independent Candidate who has already declared his leaning to the NPP and the NDC is laying claim to some other seats in Techiman South.

Speaking at the same event, President Nana Akufo-Addo promised not be vindictive or deprive the many Ghanaians who did not vote for him in the 2020 presidential election of development, adding such persons need not be troubled because he is committed to an equal distribution of the national cake.

While thanking those who ensured his successful re-election bid, Nana Addo singled out those who voted against him saying “I will have their interests at heart and in mind in all that I do”.

“I want to thank the people of Ghana for maintaining their confidence in the leadership of the nation, especially the over 6.7 million people who voted for me. But in singling them out, I want to also assure the 6.2 million people who did not vote for me, that I will have their interests at heart and in mind in all that I do,” he noted.

The president said the time has come for Ghanaians to collectively uphold the peace and tranquility of the country after the 2020 polls.

He believes that the biggest lesson of the recently held presidential and parliamentary election is the shunning of actions that have the propensity of throwing Ghana into a state of disarray.

“We have to take the lead in bringing to fruition, the main teachings of this election which is that all persons of goodwill, no matter their political affiliation have to work together to secure the peace, prosperity and progress of our nation”, he stated.

He said the NPP, following the elections, possesses a renewed commitment to ensure the success of Ghana’s democracy noting that all hands must be on deck to forestall post-election tensions that may derail the economic and social development which has been achieved over the past years.

“This occasion enables us of the NPP to renew our commitment to the promotion of democracy and good governance in our nation and also recommit ourselves to work for the rapid development of our nation and its economy so we can bring prosperity to all the people of Ghana without discrimination. This is a tough task but one that is at the centre of this noble political tradition to which we belong and it is one that calls us to duty, service, and sacrifice”, he said.

The President added that Ghana remains a cradle of democracy and good governance in the world hence, the need for both government and the citizenry to work together to maintain this enviable status.

He further assured state institutions of the necessary support to enable them to carry out their duties in a congenial environment devoid of any form of chaos.

“Ghana continues to stand as a beacon of democracy, good governance on our continent and around the world. • Accra Mayor and National Fire Service contradict NADMO and NPP on causes of market fires

Government officials appear busy to hang the various fires in the market on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

An arrest has been made in the Volta Region, in connection with the Kantamanto market fire outbreak in Accra about a week ago, and pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) newspapers, including Daily Guide, have in a coordinated manner reported that the alleged arsonist, is a supporter of the opposition NDC.

NPP activists and Deputy National Youth Authority boss, Akosua Manu, on Metro TV, on Monday, December 21, 2020, painstakingly pushed the arson on the NDC and directly accused the party’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofusu-Ampofo, as the one behind the fires, insisting that the alleged audio recording which has him in a criminal trial, has elements of market burnings, murders and kidnapping among other criminal activities.

Interestingly, the Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mohammed Adjei Sowah and the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Ellis Robinson Oko, did not mention arson, but suggested that the fires are due to illegal electricity connection in the markets.

The AMA boss in particular, said the illegal connections in the markets, are being addressed with an arrangement with the Millennium Development Authority (MIDA) to redevelop the markets, adding procurement procedures are ongoing.

Both the Accra Mayor and the Ghana National Fire Service, Ellis Robinson Oko, separately spoke from the scene of the fire.

Indeed, in the Kantamanto market fire, it is emerging that a contract has been awarded to a private company, Gold Coast Contractors to modernize the market.

It is unclear, whether the company deliberately set out the fire in the densely populated market as a means of clearing the place ahead of the construction, which is likely to meet some resistance from the traders.

But, ahead of the arrest in Ho, the Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), had alleged arson against the NDC, although he did not provide any basis.

Abu Ramadan, had taken to Facebook, hours before the arrest “Fire under control. You want to be President but yet burning markets and peoples investments lost. NDC a curse to Ghana”.

The newspapers, including Daily Guide, The Searchlight, the New Crusading, the Finder and others, have in a syndicated publication claimed that the man was arrested in Volta the Regional capital, and the police sources gave his name as Daniel Dah Kormlah, 41.

According to the newspapers, police sources have disclosed that Daniel was identified through police investigations into the Kantamanto fire incident.

The reports said that police and other intelligence agencies had begun arresting persons believed to be linked to recent arsons in some markets across the country.

In November the Odawna Market in Accra, got burnt, followed by Kantamanto market then followed by the Kaneshie market, Ghana News Agency (GNA) reported that some nine shops got burnt.

The Liberty House branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) also got burnt. In Koforidua in the Eastern Region, a fire incident occurred.

The newspapers claimed that a joint team of Police and Intelligence operatives left Accra on Thursday, December 17, 2020, in pursuit of the suspect.

The suspect was arrested at his hideout in Ho in the Volta Region on Friday evening December 18, 2020, at about 10 pm. It said that upon further interrogation, it was realized that the suspect was an active member on various political platforms, namely NDC Group Administrators, Renaissance Agenda 2020, among others.

The report said phone records showed several conversations with other persons aimed at incitement to riot and possible conspiracy to attack other state institutions.

It claimed that the suspect had admitted to the said conversations and to engaging with like-minded persons to execute some acts with the potential to breach the peace of the nation, sources say. The security agencies are carrying on with their investigations to apprehend more suspects in the coming days, one source stated.

The NDC’s Lawyer, Edudzi Tamakloe, fired back at Abu Ramadan in another Facebook post, saying “Ordinarily, I won’t give this further publicity but this is the Deputy National Director of NADMO making a serious allegation of arson against a political party without basis”.

“In any serious country, the Police should be inviting him to give a statement. But nobody will call him because he is the in-law of Dr Bawumia. In 2012, Let My Vote Count did a rally in Taifa with many speakers”.

One young man who spoke at the event stated clearly that “they (NPP members) should burn the markets and bomb schools to attract international attention.”

Abu Ramadan was a member of that group. They think others will do what they possibly did in the past. A deputy NADMO boss, do a fire incident report to the Police. This is shameful”.

Indeed, there are suspicions that the NPP is using the fires to demonize the opposition NDC to defuse the ongoing demonstrations against the irregularities that the party is complaining about with respect to the 2020 election.

The Police service is yet to officially speak on the matter of the arrest and the extent of its investigations.

The GNA reports that he Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has called on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to undo illegal connections at market places to avert the increasing incidence of fire outbreaks at such places.

Ellis Robertson Okoe, Divisional Officer II, Head of Public Relations, GNFS, said such checks were important because investigations into the fire incidents showed that most fires were caused by electrical faults.

The call followed another fire outbreak at the Kaneshie market on Saturday, after similar incidents were recorded at the Kantanmanto Market in Accra and other markets in the Eastern and Central regions.

He said the markets had witnessed congestion over the years with new power connections, some of which were done illegally and haphazardly and must be checked.

“So until these issues are checked, the fires will continue.”

Mr Okoe said a Fire Service personnel had an electric shock when fighting the Kantamanto Market fire a few days ago, and stressed the need for illegal connections to be checked.

“This disrupted fire fighting for about 30 minutes because we had to call ECG to cut off the power before we continued.”

“This made some people to conclude that the Fire Service came to the scene to watch if there was an outbreak before bringing our fire tenders to start fire fighting, which was not the case” he added.

Mr Okoe advised ECG to as a matter of urgency deploy a task force to check and undo illegal connections at the markets.

The PRO also called on traders to ensure that they always extinguished naked flames after cooking in the markets.

The Kaneshie Market fire, which occurred in the late hours of Saturday night, engulfed nine fabric shops, which also served as a tailoring shop and a warehouse.

Out of the nine shops, six were totally burnt and the remaining, partially salvaged.

Mr Okoe said the fire was brought under control at midnight and totally extinguished within 30 minutes.

He said the cause of the fire was not immediately known but suspected electrical faults.

  • NDC wins Sene West Seat by 16 vote-margin

The National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for Sene West has retained his seat as the Member of Parliament for the constituency.

This comes after the Electoral Commission counted the ballot papers from the Tato Battor Polling Station B which were prior to this locked up at the Techiman police station following a court injunction.

The Sene West constituency results were not declared after the elections because the ballot box for Tato Battor Polling Station B was snatched by one Christian Nukpeta when the election results were being counted.

Although Christian Nukpeta was arrested immediately, the parties involved noticed that the seal of the ballot box belonging to the NPP had been removed, leaving that of the Electoral Commission and NDC.

As a result, Lawyers for the NPP’s Sene West parliamentary candidate, Joseph Markay Kuma, immediately sought an injunction from the court to stop the EC from counting the ballot papers in the box.

The ballot box was then locked up at the Techiman Police Headquarters.

However, counsel for Joseph Markay Kuma withdrew their motion of injunction on the declaration of the results as filed in their petition.

On Thursday, December 17, 2020 the court threw out the case brought by the New Patriotic Party against the Electoral Commission and the National Democratic Congress on the Sene West Parliamentary Elections.

The court ruled that the said case lacks merit, the reason it was dismissed.

The NPP has also been fined an amount of GH¢20,000 for wasting the time of the court.

After the court ruling, the ballot papers in the box were counted and the NDC emerged winners.

For the Tato battor polling station B NPP polled 148 votes while the NDC polled 275.

This, when added to the previous results by other polling stations where the NDC polled 12441 and NPP polled 12952 votes, will produce higher figures; the NPP will now have a total of 13100 votes, while the NDC polls 13116 votes.

The NDC won by 16 votes.
