  • Translate warm reception into votes MP urges electorates

Atwima-Nwabiagya MP, Emmanuel Agyei Anhwere, has urged Ghanaians to translate the warm reception given to President Akufo-Addo and the NPP into votes in December 7.

He said the overwhelming enthusiasm and appreciation shown by the people all over the country during the campaign tours of the President and his Vice, were a clear indication that Ghanaians were happy with the sterling performance of Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP.

“However, Ghanaians could show much appreciation if they vote massively for the President and the NPP in the December elections, to enable the party continue with the good work to transform the nation and improve the living conditions of the people.”

Mr Anhwere said the social intervention policies of the government greatly benefited the people all over the country and there was the need for them to vote for the NPP to continue with such initiatives to transform Ghana.

He said the NPP through Nana Akufo-Addo had demonstrated that it was capable of moving the country from its present state to a more industrialized and developed nation, where everybody would have an opportunity to develop his or her potential and contribute to national development.

Mr Anhwere called on the people to vote massively for the NPP to continue with its national transformation agenda for the benefit of all.

  • Kwapong Women ‘ditch’ NDC for NPP

A group of known NDC supporters in Kwapong, in the Asunafo South Constituency of the Ahafo Region, have ‘ditched’ their long-time party, the NDC for the New Patriotic Party.

The former NDC stalwarts, numbering about 100, announced their defection at a grand durbar of Chiefs and people of Kwapong during the visit of Vice President Bawumia on Tuesday.

The women said their defection to the NPP was informed by the good policies of the Akufo-Addo government, especially the flagship Free Senior High School policy, which they said has relieved many parents the difficulty of funding their children’s secondary education.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia warmly welcomed them into the elephant fraternity, and symbolically took a group photograph with them.

The First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Naa Okaikor Akufo-Addo, has asked the public to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the upcoming polls based on its development record.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo made the call when she paid an official visit to the Ablekuma South constituency as part of her campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region.

According to her, the good record that has been set by the NPP should be the reason the NPP government should be retained for another four years.

She noted that the flagship Free SHS, One District, One Factory, Planting for Food and Jobs, and NABCO policies of the ruling government is impacting positively on the lives of Ghanaians.

“Right now, Free SHS has helped Ghanaians and a lot of people are benefiting. The government has also established more than factories all over Ghana which are creating jobs for citizens,” she added.

“NABCO has also come to address the issue of youth unemployment.”

Addressing the gathering, she said President Akufo-Addo has started a process of moving the country to another level of development which must be supported by all.

“You have all seen how through the leadership of President Akufo-Addo, the country is changing, and we need to support him and the NPP government so the change can be permanent,” she urged.

  • NPP has fulfilled most of its manifesto promises, Ghanaians can see them Kajaji Chief

The acting President of the Nkomi-Kajaji Traditional Council in the Sene East District of the Bono East Region has dismissed claims that the Akufo-Addo administration has failed to fulfil the promises it made to Ghanaians ahead of the 2016 elections.

According to Nana Osore Sunkwa, no objective Ghanaian can dispute the manifesto achievements of the government, and anyone who does so is only refusing to face reality.

“You have fulfilled majority of your manifesto promises; no one can challenge that” Nana Sunkwa declared on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Kajaji at a durbar of chiefs and people to welcome Vice President Bawumia at the beginning of his two day tour of the Bono East Region.

“Let me give one example. For decades there has been no proper train moving in Ghana, but now we see works ongoing to get the trains running again,” Nana Sunkwa continued.

“We have seen the effect of Planting for Food and Jobs on our farmers; the afforestation jobs, NABCO, restoration of the Teacher and Nursing Training allowances, and the biggest of all, Free SHS.

“Your Excellency, we have seen the digitisation work you have been doing, and how it has made life easier for all of us in this country.

“Today, more local people are getting scholarships to school because you have decentralised the application. I was a member of the district interview panel, and I know how happy many parents are because their children have qualified for the scholarship.

“The matter of a new region has been on our hearts for years, and though many governments promised us, you are the ones who have fulfilled your promise. We are most grateful.

“You made all of these promises and more in your manifesto, and you have fulfilled most of them. We know that if we give you more time you will fulfill all” he stated.

Nana Sunkwa indicated that even projects that were not in the manifesto are receiving attention.

“When President Akufo-Addo visited us not long ago, he cut sod for work to begin on our major road, from Atebubu to Kajaji. We can see construction going on, and we are confident that we will soon see coaltar on our roads”.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia reminded the chiefs and people of Kajaji that the December 7 election is about safeguarding the major gains made so far in our national development agenda, and a vote for the NPP would ensure even more equitable sharing of the national cake to every nook and cranny of the nation.

“Give Nana Akufo-Addo and our Parliamentary candidates the opportunity to serve you even better. Sene East has always voted NDC, but there has been no corresponding development. But in less than 4 years of voting for an NPP government, you can see the improvements. Vote NPP, and see even more development” Dr Bawumia urged.

  • UG: Delay in reopening should not prevent you from voting TESCON to students

Persons, especially students, who have their polling centres on the campus of the University of Ghana, have been asked not to hesitate in coming back to campus to cast their vote in the forthcoming December polls.

This is coming from the University of Ghana chapter of the Tertiary Students Confederacy of the New Patriotic Party.

It comes on the back an announcement from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that tertiary universities are to commence the 2020/2021 academic year in January 2021.

Speaking to UniversNews, TESCON communications member, Kofi Ampong, admonished students to make efforts to come back to campus on election day just as they did during the voter registration exercise.

He pointed out the voting was their civic right, hence, the need to break any hindrance that may prevent them from exercising it.

“If we cast our mind back to the registration period, we were all aware that we were home but yet still students managed to find their way to campus to register. The same way by which students found their way to campus to register to vote, that is the same way by which they should find their way to campus to vote,” he said.

He was, however, quick to add that students may use the option of vote transfer if they believe that coming to campus will be a problem.

“In any case, if you are a student and you feel intimidated or that coming to campus to vote in December will be a problem for you, the Electoral Commission has opened a window of voter transfer where anyone who registered can transfer their votes to another place of your choice. So that is another option student can explore,” he added.

Haruna Idrissu, the Minority Leader in Parliament, says leadership of the house will meet in the coming days to determine the status of Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Amoako Asiamah.

This is after the New Patriotic Party wrote to Parliament to notify it of the withdrawal of the membership of Andrew Amoako Asiamah who has decided to contest the December 7 elections as an independent candidate amid protest by leadership of the ruling party.

Mr Iddrisu says Parliament is threading cautiously on the matter due to its complex nature.

He stated in a Joy FM interview that the case is being studied with reference to certain articles in the constitution.

“It is a matter that we are studying carefully with constitutional law advisers. He did not walk in as an independent candidate.

“We will need to find out if being sacked by the party (NPP) makes him an independent candidate,” the Minority Leader told Joy FM.

According to him, due to the complex nature of the issue, “the case is being studied with reference to Article 112 and the provisions of Article 94 to determine his status as an independent candidate or not.”

He said that as things stand, Andrew Amoako is walking on one leg as his position in the house is a matter of discussion among the leadership.

He described Andrew Amoako as a “limping” MP and questioned, “whether he should be recognised as a Member of Parliament on the ticket of the party (NPP).”

“He is walking on a limping leg, for now, he is a limping candidate,” he said.

“When we are conclusive with our findings, we will make known to the public on what they think. That is whether he should be vacating his seat or continue to be an MP,” Mr Iddrisu added.

Consequently, they have pledged their unflinching support for the party to enable it to chalk a landslide victory in the constituency in election 2004.

The unity deal was brokered by a parliamentary hopeful of the party, Alhaji Abdulai Haruna, following series of crunch meetings to calm the nerves of his supporters who rejected an outcome of the Parliamentary primaries organised this year to elect parliamentary candidates for the party.

Alhaji Haruna, lost by two votes to the incumbent MP, Thomas Donko Ogajah. Before the unity talks, there were lots of agitations and accusations of impersonations of delegates, ghost names, among others during the voting process.

The agitations led to serious scuffles and angry supporters went berserk burning the party’s constituency office and the pickup after staging a massive demonstration.

  • Akufo-Addo’s free SHS is a game-changer for females – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s flagship Free Senior High School (FSHS) has significantly increased female enrolment for secondary education in the country.

In a media interview on on Monday, October 12, Dr. Bawumia explained that, the introduction of the Free SHS policy had ended a disturbing trend, which saw the education of many females from poor families being truncated in favour of sponsoring a male child due to lack of funding.

The introduction of the Free SHS, Dr Bawumia indicated, had solved many social problems including; the improvement in female enrollment at the secondary school level.

“Prior to the introduction of Free SHS, there was this situation of families who couldn’t afford to pay fees of all their children and normally sacrificing the females in order to mobilise money and concentrate on the male child.

“This situation left the girls behind and many of them ended up as house girls. It was all because parents could not afford to pay all children and the family would decide to sponsor the male and drop the female,” the Vice President observed.

The Vice President said the policy was well- thought out by the compassionate Akufo-Addo, who brought it to give all children free access to secondary education to alleviate the suffering of parents.

“President Akufo-Addo is a compassionate leader and the Free SHS policy was meant to build an educated population by giving all children from every part of the country, regardless of the social and economic status of their parents, free access to secondary education,” he emphasised.

The policy, he said, had resolved many problems such as lifting financial burden off parents and improved enrollment of female enrollment.

“Now people find it difficult to get young girls to be their house girls.” Dr Bawumia stated.

  • Vote for NPP to continue its Education Strategy – Buaben Asamoa

Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Communication Director, New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged Ghanaians to retain the NPP in power to transform the educational sector as outlined in the Education Strategic Plan.

He said the plan, which spanned 2018 to 2030, sought to reform the sector and make teaching and learning more relevant to meet the human resource and development needs of the country.

Mr Buaben Asamoa, made the call at a press briefing in Accra organised by the Party to highlight some of the interventions of the government in the educational sector.

He said in three and half years, the government had restored Teacher Trainee allowance, developed National Teachers Standards for Pre-service Teachers and developed a National Teacher Education Curriculum Framework to guide Teacher Education Institutions in the development of relevant world-class curricula.

Mr Buaben Asamoa stated that the government had introduced a Quality Assurance, Accreditation and Assessment Tool for all 46 Colleges of Education to promote the training of high-quality teachers and worked with five teacher education universities to develop a three-semester top-up programme for in-service teachers to upgrade and acquire Bachelor of Education.

The government, he noted, had developed and deployed Colleges of Education Information Management System (CEMIS) to ensure information and data sharing between Colleges and the National Council for Tertiary Education as well as introduced the National Service Scheme for graduates of Colleges of education.

He said the conditions of service of teachers had been improved and that 35,515 staff that were at positions including Basic School Head, Headteachers, Assistant Headteachers, Chaplain/Imam, Form Master/Mistress were receiving responsibility allowance.

Mr Buaben Asamoa recalled that available data from the Ghana Education Service between 2013 and 2016 indicated that, on the average, 100,000 children, every year, passed the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) but could not take up their places in Senior High School due financial constraints.

“This represented about 35 per cent of the total number of children who had been placed. Of those who took up their places, 22 per cent dropped out, again due to financial reasons. Free SHS has therefore come as a major boost to parents, students and the nation,” he said.

Mr Buaben Asamoa, who is also the Member of Parliament for Adentan, said the Senior High School population stood at about 1.2 million students, up from 800,000 at the start of the 2016/17 academic year.

Although the government introduced the double-track system, he said over the last three years, more than 1,000 structures, including dormitories, classroom blocks and laboratories were under construction to end it.

“Any promise by National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership to abolish Double Track in seven months is unrealistic and desperate. It is obvious that the NDC does not understand the Double Track system, and have no real commitment to Free SHS,” he said.

Mr Buaben Asamoa said government had developed Technical and Vocational Skills (TVET) to help tackle challenges presented by the 4th industrial revolution, which requires tailor-made solutions that are adaptable globally.

He said the five-year Strategic Plan for TVET Transformation would among other things see the overall Upgrading and Modernization of the Vocational Education System in the country.

He said the plan would address the skills gap in the country by the revamping vocational training infrastructure across the country, resulting in the creation of world-class training facilities linked to current job market demands.

  • Oti region still NDC stronghold in spite of split from Volta Ephson

Pollster Ben Epshon has revealed that the Oti region will be a stronghold of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in spite of the split from the Volta region.

Mr Ephson said on the Elections 360 programme with co-host Stephen Anti on TV3 that the split of the region by the Akufo-Addo administration will have no effect on the voting pattern in that part of the country.

“Oti region will still be an NDC stronghold,” he said on the programme on Monday, October 12.

Mr Epshon further explained that anytime any of the two leading parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC lost less than 70 per cent of votes in their strongholds they go ahead to lose the elections.

“You will have to win a certain percentage. For example, any time the NPP has won less than 70 percent in Ashanti and less than 60 percent in Eastern region, they lose the elections because that is your stronghold.

“In Volta region, a new book I am working on shows that the NDC lost over a hundred thousand votes in Volta region alone compared to 2012.

“So if you strong hold you are losing votes and you are losing votes in the other places. And that is the cause of apathy.”

  • NPP initiates moves to replace slain MP Ekow Kwansah Hayford in 10 days

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Mfantseman constituency in the Central Region, has initiated moves to find a replacement for Mr Ekow Kwansah Hayford, the party’s Parliamentary nominee for Election 2020 who was killed last Friday by suspected armed robbers.

This is in line with Section 4 of the Public Elections Regulations 2020, C.I. 127, which states that: “Where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of 10 days shall be allowed for nominations.”

The NPP in the Mfantseman constituency is yet to settle on a candidate to represent the late Ekow Kwansah Hayford but is hoping to find one this week to meet the 10 days deadline specified in law.

Ekow Kwansah Hayford who was the Member of Parliament for the area and was seeking re-election filed his nomination forms on Thursday, October 8, 2020 only to be killed the next day.

The EC closed the filing of nominations on Friday, October 9, 2020 same day as the MP was killed at dawn.

As part of the processes for re-election, Mr Hayford battled it out with a new entrant Mr James Korsah-Brown in June 2020 where the NPP delegates endorsed him.

    Replacement

In an interview with Graphic Online’s Central Regional correspondent, Shirley Asiedu Addo, the first Vice Chairman of the Mfantseman constituency, Mr Yaw Berchie-Nuako said the constituency executive would meet by mid week to decide on a nominee and propose same to the national executive for approval.

He said they were hoping that whoever they select will be a winnable candidate to step in the shoes of the late Mr Hayford.

“The constituency executive here are on the grounds and so we know who can win the seat for us,” he stated.

Mr Berchie-Nuako stated that there was no way the national executive could impose any person on the constituency.

Is it going to be Ekow Kwansah’s widow?

Asked if the party was considering bringing the widow of the late MP, Mr Berchie-Nuako did not give a definite answer except to say that the nature of the death was a great blow to the family.

    Korsah-Brown

Asked if the executives would consider Mr James Korsah-Brown the only candidate who had contested the late MP in the primary in June 2020, he said “like I said we don’t have any name yet. The executives would decide and let you know,” he stated.

    NPP will retain seat

The NDC held the seat for 8 years before the NPP’s Ekow Kwansah Hayford snatched it from them in 2016.

“Our late MP was a good man who did a lot of work. His four-year work as MP is far more than the NDC’s work in 8 years,” he stated.

He said any candidate chosen would ride on the excellent works of the late MP.

“We are not going to rely on sympathy votes. The works of Kwansah Hayford speak everywhere and we are optimistic that the NPP will retain the seat,” he added.

He urged NPP members to remain calm and support the family in prayers.

“I was with him when the incident happened and I have still not recovered from it. It has hit us hard but we are praying and know it will make us even stronger,” he added.

  • Kpando NPP Parliamentary candidate confident of ousting incumbent

Mr Theophilus Ernest Quist, Parliamentary Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said he was confident of ousting the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mrs Della Sowah of the National Democratic Congress in the December elections.

He said the people of the Municipality were “fed up with the MP” and the NDC party in the Constituency and that she had no life-changing message for the people except propaganda.

“We are fortunate, we have good policies and President Akufo-Addo was touching base with the youth, giving them hope, which are visible in the Municipality.”

In an interview after filing his nomination to contest the seat in Kpando, Mr. Quist said he believed in a “fair fight” devoid of insults.

“This contest is about exchange of ideas and opinion on the way forward in developing the Municipality and that Mrs. Sowah had been a failure for the past eight years that the people were calling for a change.

“The people themselves are calling for a change, in fact, it is making our current MP very uncomfortable…goes to places to say that all that Quist is doing, she is the one undertaking them,” he added.

Mr. Quist said the current MP would be defeated in upcoming elections because “the sound of the drum has changed” in the Municipality.

He said change was inevitable and that he was sure that come December 07, there would be a change in Kpando and “parliamentary power will switch camp.”

Mr. Quist said he was certain he would change the dynamics in the Constituency as it had always been the NDC in Kpando.

“I believe the current MP has done her best for Kpando, but the seat is not a traditional stool that you can occupy all your life,” he added. Mr Quist appreciated President Akufo-Addo for his support to the party in the Municipality that led to his nomination.

He said though there were other contenders for the seat, his main focus was the incumbent MP as she was the only candidate that could pose a threat to him.

  • NPP PC Nii Lante Bannerman campaigns with mammoth crowd in Accra

A mammoth crowd was seen cheering on the New Patriotic Party’s aspiring Parliamentary Candidate for Odododiodoo Constituency, Nii Lante Bannerman during his campaign tour of Accra on Thursday.

The crowd numbering over five hundred paraded through the central Market of Accra including Zongolane, Kantamanto and Timber market amidst dancing and singing ‘4more4Nana’ causing huge traffic in the area.

As the country keeps recording a number of coronavirus cases, the crowd including Nii Lante Bannerman completely disregarded the coronavirus safety protocols during his march.

Bannerman who is vying for the Parliamentary seat was unsuccessful in his previous attempt and has hence restrategized by using street processions in some parts of Accra as a means of campaigning to unseat the incumbent, Nii Lante Vanderpuye.

The Odododiodoo Constituency has been fiercely contested in years past and this trend looks set to continue in the 2020 polls.

Meanwhile, GhanaWeb has gathered that the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be paying a visit to traders at Kantamanto on Saturday, October 10 to solicit for votes.

Despite not winning the Parliamentary seat in Odododiodoo, the NPP government has been able to undertake several projects in the area including the construction of two football pitches, an on-going construction of a harbour among others.

With this, the NPP is fully convinced that the crowd backing their campaigns will reflect into votes come December 7.

  • Vote for Nana Akufo-Addo to continue with the development – Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has asked Ghanaians to retain the government in power to continue with the many developments and social intervention programmes.

He said the December 7 election would be a choice between the era of untold hardships under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the few years of social interventions programmes by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He said under the NDC, Ghanaians encountered five years of power outages, youth unemployment, non-functioning ambulance service, arbitrary increase in utility and the absence of Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs).

Dr Bawumia, who said this when he addressed a Durbar at Atobiase in the Wassa-East District to begin his two-day working visit to the Western Region, appealed to Ghanaians to give President Akufo-Addo the chance to change the fortunes of the country.

According to him, the NPP Government pursued a vigorous agenda to bring relief to the people of Ghana such as the free SHS policy, 1D1F, restoration of teacher trainee and nurses trainee allowances, planting for food and jobs, cocoa interventions and producer price increases, among others.

Dr Bawumia said the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic had gained global recognition and commendation with the free provision of water and electricity, COVID-19 alleviation fund to business owners, tax rebates and free meals to the populace during the lockdowns and students.

Nana Opiah Mensah, Acting Chief of Wassa Atobiase, in his address, commended the government for the unprecedented infrastructural development in the area.

He advocated the construction of a senior high school for the town since it was far from the district capital, Daboase.

He called for the provision of a mobile telecommunication network to solve the area and making it difficult to make calls and use internet services.

Nana Mensah also reminded him for the construction of a bridge over the Pra River to connect the residents to the neighbouring towns which makes it difficult for the children to cross during school days, as promised by President Akufo-Addo some time ago.

Mr Joseph Boahen, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of COCOBOD, noted that the free SHS policy had benefitted the majority of Ghanaians without which many children would have dropped out of school and called on the people to vote for the continuation of the policy.

Touching on cocoa production, he announced that the cocoa pruning and hand pollination initiative introduced by the government has tremendously changed cocoa production in the country, bringing big relief to farmers.

He urged the people not to take the National Democratic Congress’ ( NDC) propaganda of free fertilizer seriously and said it was not achieved when they were in government.

The CEO of Cocobod touched on the compensation package given to cocoa farmers whose farms were affected by the swollen shoot disease and said that was a huge investment of the NPP Government towards cocoa production.

He hinted that fifty-thousand youths would be engaged to embark on the cocoa tree cutting exercise to rid the farms of the dreaded swollen shoot disease for a replant.

Mr Boahen added that the cocoa pension scheme was vigorously pursued to give a befitting retirement package to cocoa farmers in the country.

Mr Wilson Arthur, Wassa-East District Chief Executive touted achievements in the education and skills training sector and said scholarships were given to students to further their education to higher levels and livelihood empowerment programmes.

He mentioned that the District had benefitted from two of the One-District, One-Factory (1D1F) initiative programmes to create employment to the teeming youth.

He said the administration had seen a lot of infrastructural developments in the three years.

Among the projects are the provision of potable water, construction of access roads, provision of the skills development centre and improvement in mobile telecommunications network among others.

  • Forgive me – Nii Noi Nortey returns to NPP

The 2016 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate hopeful for Klottey Korle constituency, Valentino Nii Noi Nortey has rendered an unqualified apology to the party, saying, his attitude might have contributed to their defeat in that electioneering season.

It would be recalled that Nii Noi won the 2016 parliamentary primaries but was subsequently disqualified to make way for the Pink Sheet Man (Lawyer Philip Addison) to context. Following the processes that led to his disqualification, Nii Noi left the party to go independent in the same constituency.

This gave the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Dr. Zenator Rawlings, extra advantage to win the seat because it was already occupied by an NDC Member of Parliament, Nii Armah Ashietey.

During the fund-raising and outdooring of 2020 NPP parliamentary candidate for Klottey Korle constituency, Mr. Nortey, who through the intervention of party executives has, rescind, his decision to quit the party rendered his apology, asking for pardon if their defeat in the election year was as a result of his moves and pledged to rally behind their elected candidate for 2020, Lawyer Prince Appiah Debrah to restore the seat, back to the NPP since 2004.

He is now the campaign director for Team Prince 2020 and has promised to do all it takes to secure victory for the Klottey Korle elephant family.

The candidate, Prince Appiah Debrah in his acceptance speech notes, a lot is in store for the constituents once he is voted to power and it will only take a new direction to get them what they deserve.

He hints the NPP has over 55% of total registered voters of the constituency and it will demand only hard work to add more to that in ensuring victory to do more for the people.

The Commission declared an amount of GH¢100,000 set aside as filing fee for Presidential candidates and GH¢10,000 for that of Parliamentary candidates to be paid through a bankers draft.

Meanwhile, the Acting Head of Public Affairs at the Electoral Commission, Sylvia Annoh has disclosed that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will file its nomination on Tuesday October 6, 2020, at 11:00am.

According to the EC, the Ghana Freedom Party led by Akua Donkor will also file its nomination tomorrow, October 6, 2020, at 10:00am.

  • Akwatia MP won’t go independent despite missing NPP rally – Akufo-Addo

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Mercy Adu Gyamfi (a.k.a Ama Sey) was conspicuously missing at NPP’s mammoth rally held to host President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, flagbearer of the party in the upcoming 2020 general elections.

Her absence seems to loudly confirm the rumours that Ama Sey may be lacing her boots to contest as independent candidate in the December parliamentary election.

Ama Sey, who lost her parliamentary candidature to Ernest Kumi in a controversial manner, has since appeared bitter towards leadership of the Party due to the loss.

According to reports, Ama Sey has been nursing the idea of contesting as an Independent candidate in the 2020 parliamentary elections considering her popularity in the Akwatia constituency.

A number of groups in the constituency have rooted to push and support her to go independent even though some regional party executives have spoken hard that they would not allow her to go solo.

At the rally in Akwatia on Sunday, October 4, 2020, which marked the last day of President Akufo-Addo’s campaign tour to the Eastern Region, the President emphasised that he was not sure Ama Sey would go independent.

Meanwhile, at the moment, the aggrieved Ama Sey has not come out herself to declare her intentions of going independent. Moreover, she did not appear at the rally to indicate her declination.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the NPP does not serve human beings but the party as a whole.

“This independent thing they are talking about. I have heard it. But I don’t believe that Ama Sey will go independent. I don’t believe it. And she is a staunch NPP and NPP is on her heart.

“It pains me that she is not here but I know well that she will not do that.

“If the 4more4Nana becomes a reality, she will be part of my new arrangements and she (Ama Sey) knows she has been factored,” Nana Addo said to the people of Akwatia.

According to Osafo Marfo, the Senior Minister, Ama Sey herself has confirmed to him that she would not go independent.

He expressed that the NPP greatly recognizes her sterling effort in 2016 for heavily defeating then NDC candidate, Baba Jamal, to capture the Akwatia seat for the party.

  • Your work will end in 2024 Okyenhene to Akufo-Addo

The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, says President Akufo-Addo will end his work as leader of the country in 2024, seemingly endorsing the President ahead of the December polls.

The Okyenhene while speaking on behalf of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs during a campaign tour of the area by the President, praised the NPP flagbearer for his handling of the COVID crisis in Ghana.

“The whole world is praising Akufo-Addo for the good work he did in containing COVID in Ghana when even more resourceful nations still grapple with the virus. So when his work comes to a close; and his work is not ending now, even if it will end that will be around 2024, he should build a presidential library which will teach people how he handled the COVID virus in Ghana,” the Okyenhene said.

On Monday, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, assured the President that his record in office “will speak for him” in the 2020 polls.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Monday entreated parliamentary aspirants who lost the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary to the let the collective goal of the Party override their personal interests at all times.

Dr Bawumia, who launched the “Aspirants Unite for Victory Movement” made up of 220 defeated parliamentary aspirants and 42 sitting MPs who lost the primary, urged them to endeavour to drum home the massive achievements of the Government to the grassroots for a resounding victory.

The Vice President said the formation of the group provided added impetus to the collective goal of the party for victory in the 2020 elections.

“My spirit rejoices when I think about it that rather than grumbling and complaining about your loss, you have shown enthusiasm, full of energy and love by forming a movement…this is unprecedented,” he said.

“I’m encouraged by the love and zeal you have exhibited…your stories will be told positively in the near future.”

Vice President Bawumia said the dedication and zeal showed by the group indicated that the NPP was a team and united for victory on December 7.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand because in unity lies our collective strength…I’m so inspired by what you have done,” Dr Bawumia added.

Vice President Bawumia said there was so much at stake in this year’s election to determine the way forward for the country’s development, hence it was imperative to mobilise the grassroots for resounding victory.

He said the Mahama-led government exhibited gross incompetence in administering the nation during his four-year term in office as President, therefore Ghanaians should not entrust him with power to manage the country again.

Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, the Speaker of Parliament, who chaired the ceremony, lauded the resilience and boldness of the aspirants, saying despite the frustrations and disappointment in losing the primary they did not allow their defeat to overpower them, but were mobilising themselves to support the party’s campaign.

He urged them to take inspiration from President Akufo-Addo, who suffered many electoral defeats both within the party and general elections, but exhibited resilience and now at the helm of affairs as the President of the Republic.

Mr Kennedy Kankam, Convenor of the Movement and Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, who lost the primary, assured the party of their resolve to mobilise the grassroots for support for resounding victory on December 7.

The Movement announced the adoption of two orphan constituencies – Upper West Akyem and Mion – to campaign for victory for their respective parliamentary candidates.

It will also intensify media engagements, production of documentaries on the party’s achievements and enhance its presence on social media.

  • NPP is the best option – Joe Ghartey

Mr Joe Ghartey, Minister of Railway Development, has appealed to Ghanaians to retain the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in power because it provides better governance and leadership.

Mr Ghartey, also Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan in the Western Region, made the appeal at a training and campaign launch dubbed “Agenda Maintain and Increase Seats” In Accra.

  • NPP under pressure because of NDCs manifesto – Political Analyst

A political analyst and sustainable development practitioner, Michael Ebo is claiming that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is under pressure following the launch of the manifesto of the opposition NationalDemocratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on Eboboba, a political show on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he said although the government will not admit it, the NDC manifesto has brought them undue pressure.

He told host Kwabena Agyapong the government is under pressure because the NDC has given Ghanaians some alternative, adding, whether it is credible or not, a lot of people will fall for it.

He disclosed after the NDC manifesto launch, there was a small survey conducted by some intelligence units like the BNI and National Security and from what I have read, the Okada population will have an influence on the election.

“So clearly, the government have to do something about that,” he added.

He said it would be to the benefit of Ghanaians for us to have an issue bassed politics especially when political parties launch their policies and programmes before the election.

Touching on the decision by the government to pay all depositors of the various collapsed financial institutions, he said the government had no plans to pay the customers their deposits this year but the promise by the NDC influenced their u-turn.

“For the government to come back and say that now I have money to pay in cash, you should know that they are under pressure. And it is advice from a survey the security agencies have done. What the government have done; whether they admit or not, about 50% will be because of political expediency and not genuine thought.”

The NPP he stated might lose some votes due to this sudden u-turn.

  • There is nothing free in reality Kofi Abotsi on NDC, NPP Free SHS promises

Dean of University of Professional Studies (UPSA) Law Faculty, Ernest Kofi Abotsi has said the flagship Free SHS programme of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government which has been endorsed and supported by the opposition parties is not entirely free as touted.

According to him, the cost of policies which are mostly branded free is indirectly paid by the ordinary tax-paying Ghanaian.

Contributing to a panel discussion on Newsfile he said, “to be honest, in reality, there is nothing free. All these things politicians promise are not free because we are paying for them with our taxes and by this reason, we are actually paying for them…”

He continued; “What we are not doing is direct payment…as the beneficiary of these services that have been promised.”

The ruling NPP government in their 2020 manifesto promised amongst other things to consolidate the implementation of the Free SHS programme while the opposition NDC, led by John Dramani Mahama promised to make the policy more inclusive and substantive.

By inclusive, the NDC meant that private schools will be captured under the policy.

However, Kofi Abotsi was quick to indicate that roping in private schools to the Free SHS policy would be illegal.

“…they simply have no capacity or mandate to do that…government cannot source its obligation to a private body,” he said.

The only way to achieve that, according to him, is if the government decides to bear the entire cost for the students in private schools.

The Free SHS policy was inaugurated in September 2017, barely a year after the Akufo-Addo-led government took over the helm of affairs after winning the 2016 general elections.
