Recent reports indicate that three individuals have been apprehended by the Ghana Police Service at the New Patriotic Party’s Walewale primary happening today.
Per reports, these individuals were picked up over a chaotic scene that occurred due to the presence of some heavily built men accompanying the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hajia Lariba Zuweira.
There is a heavy police deployment in Walewale at the fresh parliamentary primary today, with over 800 delegates scheduled to vote.
Vice Presidential special advisor, Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru is contesting against Hajia Lariba Zuweira.
The re-run follows the Tamale High Court’s annulment of the election initially held on January 28, 2024.
Dr. Kabiru secured 345 votes, defeating Hajia Zuweira who polled 338 votes.
Hajia Lariba quickly rejected the election outcome and filed an ex parte motion at the Tamale High Court, alleging electoral irregularities and malpractice by the party, Dr Kabiru, and the Electoral Commission.
She sought an injunction to prevent Dr Kabiru from holding himself as the winner, which was granted in June 2024.
A new report by The Fourth Estate has revealed that Francis Owusu-Akyaw, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate (PC) for the Juaben Constituency in the Ashanti Region, is connected to 15 different mining companies.
Mr Owusu-Akyaw’s engagement with these companies has come under scrutiny, especially considering his role in the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Small-Scale Mining, which was tasked with cracking down on illegal mining and reforming the small-scale mining sector.
Owusu-Akyaw was reportedly dismissed from the committee for allegedly suggesting to the then-Secretary, Charles Bissue, that they could exploit their positions to engage in small-scale mining. This revelation has raised questions about his involvement in the mining sector and its impact on Ghana’s forest reserves.
Mining Companies Linked to Francis Owusu-Akyaw:
Hapic Mining Limited
North Rock Limited
High Street Limited
Elite Minerals Ghana Limited
Sam and Gyan Limited
Akonta Mining Company Limited
Akosdwomo Company Limited
Clean-Jobs Resources
Unipower Mining Company Limited
FJ Minerals Limited
Ofori-Poku Company Ltd
Kaboa Plux
RYGO Excel Globe Mining Ltd
DML Investment Limited
Oleum Ghana Limited
Several of these companies, including Sam and Gyan Limited, Unipower Mining Company Limited, Hapic Mining Limited, and FJ Minerals Limited, hold leases to mine in forest reserves. Additionally, Oleum Ghana Limited and Akonta Mining, which is owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (popularly known as Chairman Wontumi), have pending applications with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
One of the companies, DML Investment Limited, is personally owned by Owusu-Akyaw. He is listed as a director of the company and is described on the DML website as a mineral consultant. Interestingly, DML was mentioned in the controversial will of the late Forestry Commission CEO, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, who bequeathed land in the Achimota Forest to the company.
In addition to DML Investment Limited, Owusu-Akyaw co-owns FJ Minerals Limited with one Joyce Nyarku. This company, incorporated in June 2022, applied for concessions in several forest reserves, including the Jimira and Jimira Extension Forest Reserves and the Tano Suraw Forest Reserve in Sefwi Wiawso.
Owusu-Akyaw’s extensive involvement in mining raises concerns about the potential impact on Ghana’s forest reserves, as his mining operations continue to expand. His connections within the top hierarchy of the Minerals Commission are also being cited as a “competitive advantage,” as noted on the DML website.
This report highlights the intricate network of mining interests tied to a prominent political figure, fueling ongoing debates about the preservation of Ghana’s forest reserves and the fight against illegal mining.
An investigation by The Fourth Estate has uncovered a concerning connection between Francis Owusu-Akyaw, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the Juaben Constituency, and several mining companies allegedly involved in the destruction of Ghana’s forest reserves.
Mr Owusu-Akyaw, who was once part of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Small-Scale Mining, has been linked to multiple mining operations within protected areas.
According to the report, Mr. Owusu-Akyaw was allegedly dismissed from the committee after suggesting to Charles Bissue, the former Secretary of the committee, that they could use their positions for personal gain in small-scale mining. Mr. Bissue is said to have confirmed this to The Fourth Estate.
Further digging into the Minerals Commission’s records by The Fourth Estate revealed that Mr. Owusu-Akyaw is the contact person for at least 15 mining companies, including Sam and Gyan Limited (owned by Kumasi Mayor Sam Pyne), Unipower Mining Company Limited, Hapic Mining Limited, and FJ Minerals Limited. These companies collectively hold several leases for mining operations in forest reserves. Two other companies — Oleum Ghana Limited and Akonta Mining (owned by Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi) — also have applications pending with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
The report also highlights Mr. Owusu-Akyaw’s involvement in mining through his two companies — DML Investment Limited and FJ Minerals Limited. DML Investment is described on its website as having close ties to the upper management at the Minerals Commission, which the company claims has helped it secure and operate mining concessions across Ghana.
Mr. Owusu-Akyaw is said to provide consultancy services through DML Investment, and the company was named in the controversial will of Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, alias Sir John, the late former CEO of the Forestry Commission. Sir John’s will had bequeathed part of the Achimota Forest lands to DML, raising questions about how these lands were acquired.
Further, FJ Minerals Limited, a company co-owned by Mr. Owusu-Akyaw, was incorporated on June 3, 2022, the same month that the new Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulation (LI 2462) was presented to Parliament. Notably, FJ Minerals applied for a concession in the Jimira Forest Reserves just weeks before the law came into effect and obtained a six-year mining lease, valid until 2029, the report further revealed.
“FJ Minerals also put in an application in May 2023 to mine in the Tano Suraw Forest Reserve in Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region. Interestingly, another company, Kaboa Plux, which Mr Akyaw consults for, also applied for the same concession in July 2023. Both applications are under review,” the report added.
Former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chief Bugri Naabu, has made shocking claims that certain members of his party had plotted to assassinate him and two other regional chairmen, Adam Mahama of the Upper East Region and Alhaji Short of the Upper West Region.
According to Bugri Naabu, the reason for this plot was that the three of them were perceived as obstacles to the ambitions of some individuals within the party.
Reflecting on the tragic death of Adam Mahama, who was fatally attacked with acid, Bugri Naabu suggested that this incident was linked to the threats against his own life.
He questioned, “Where is Adam now, and what happened to him? We all know he was attacked with acid. So, if you try to kill me, it won’t succeed; instead, it might be you who loses your life, just like Adam was killed.”
Naabu’s remarks were in response to allegations made by Nana Ohene Ntow, a former NPP General Secretary, who had accused him of making death threats. Naabu dismissed these claims, asserting that it was actually Ntow and his associates who had plotted against him.
He remarked, “It’s ironic that he accuses me when it was actually they who wanted to eliminate me, Adam Mahama, and Alhaji Short. They believed that unless we were out of the way, they couldn’t achieve their goals.”
Naabu also shared a harrowing experience in Tamale, where he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. He explained that he had been warned about people who had come to town specifically to kill him.
“I was informed that there were people in town intending to take my life, so I was advised not to go out. They even came to a hotel and tried to lure me into a meeting under the pretense that some visitors from Accra wanted to see me. But when I asked who these visitors were, they couldn’t provide any details.”
The situation escalated when the would-be attackers attempted to force him into the meeting, but locals intervened.
“They tried to force their way in, but residents around me confronted them, asking why they were insisting on meeting so late at night and why they wouldn’t leave when I refused to come out,” Naabu recounted.
Naabu also criticized Nana Ohene Ntow for resigning from the party when his preferred candidate didn’t win, hinting that this led to the formation of the “Butterfly Movement” or an independent political move.
He described another attempt on his life during a meeting at Circle, where he and Alhaji Short were surrounded by machomen who intended to kill them.
In yet another incident, Naabu shared how he was invited to eat waakye and tuo zaafi, but senior party members warned him that it was a trap to ambush them.
“They invited us to join them for a meal, but we were warned by some senior party members that it was a setup, intended to lure us into an ambush, so we wisely chose not to go.”
Naabu concluded by asserting that it was Ntow and his associates who were the real masterminds behind these assassination plots, not him.
Two executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Walewale constituency of the North-East Region have been suspended with immediate effect for what the party has described as gross misconduct.
Along with the two executives, another party member has also been suspended. All three have been instructed to return any party materials in their possession while further investigations are carried out.
The suspension was confirmed in a letter issued by the party’s Regional Chairman, Fuseini Nurudeen. This action follows a recent High Court ruling in Tamale that called for a re-run of the Walewale constituency parliamentary primary due to findings of irregularities, impersonation, and over-voting.
Following the court’s decision, the NPP’s General Secretary announced that the re-run would follow a set timeline: nominations opened on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, will close on Thursday, September 5, and the election will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
The NPP’s swift response highlights the party’s commitment to maintaining internal discipline and ensuring the integrity of its electoral processes. The re-run election in Walewale will be closely monitored due to the controversies surrounding the previous primary.
Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, the disputed New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Walewale, has expressed his dissatisfaction with a recent court ruling that nullified his primary victory and ordered a rerun in the constituency.
Despite the setback, Dr. Kabiru remains firm in his belief that he has done nothing unlawful throughout the electoral process.
In an interview with Citi News, Dr. Kabiru voiced his disappointment with the High Court’s decision on Monday, September 2, which annulled the results of the January primary.
“I am in this contest. I was proposed by the people to participate in this contest. I never engaged in any act that would give me undue advantage. And up to today, they have not been able to prove that,” he stated.
He further emphasized his innocence, saying, “Even one single act that I did to procure undue advantage. Nobody has accused me of having done anything wrong. Except to say the politics of it.”
The January primary saw Dr. Kabiru, a 35-year-old PhD holder and special advisor to the Vice President, narrowly defeat the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Hajia Lariba Zuweratu, with 345 votes to her 338. The election was closely monitored, with heavy security presence and the participation of regional and constituency executives.
However, Hajia Lariba disputed the outcome, filing an ex parte motion at the Tamale High Court. She accused Dr. Kabiru, the party, and the Electoral Commission of electoral irregularities.
In the primary, two other candidates, Tahiru Sham-Una and Jangdoo Mahama, received 145 and 1 vote, respectively. The NPP, acting as the third defendant in the case, initially sought to have it dismissed, arguing that Hajia Lariba had bypassed the party’s internal conflict resolution mechanisms.
The court, however, refused this request, and instead, in March, fined the party GH¢8000 while granting a plea for an out-of-court settlement.
Before the recent ruling, NPP supporters in the Walewale constituency had called for the intervention of the party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to resolve the ongoing dispute. They warned that failure to address the issue swiftly could jeopardize the party’s chances in the upcoming general elections.
Despite the court’s decision, Dr. Kabiru remains adamant that his conduct during the primary was above reproach. His supporters continue to rally behind him, questioning the need for a rerun when no unlawful actions have been proven against him.
It is emerging thatDr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP might just be killing two birds with one stone with the selection of Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (aka NAPO) as the party’s Vice Presidential Candidate.
This is because, by that single decision, the party is not only getting an election-winning Running Mate in NAPO but also another significant boost to its 2024 campaign, NAPO’s lovely wife, Mrs. Alma Nana Pokua Abena Adade Prempeh.
It appears that for the two major political parties, the 2024 campaign will be not only a contest for the Presidential Candidates but also a contest for their respective spouses, with the ever-sensational Mrs. Samira Bawumia leading the “onslaught” for the governing NPP and now supported by Mrs. Alma Opoku Prempeh.
It is yet to be seen whether the spouses of the opposition presidential and vice presidential candidates, Lordina Mahama and Mr Opoku Agyemang, can match Samira and Alma’s indomitable might.
Mrs. Samira Bawumia is no stranger to our body politics. Her ability to take on John Dramani Mahama and the NDC on governance, economy, and social justice is known to every Ghanaian, including children in primary schools.
However, when it comes to Alma Opoku Prempeh, thus far, very little is known about her by the generality of Ghanaians, particularly in the political milieu.
Who is she, and what does she bring to the table?
Alma Nana Pokua Abena Adade Prempeh is a Chartered Global Management Accountant with professional expertise in both operational and strategic finance, as well as a wealth of experience in various top commercial and charitable financial management positions in London in a period spanning over two decades.
She is the daughter of Justice NYB Adade, a former Attorney General in the Second Republic, under Prime Minister K.A Busia. Alma’s father is also a celebrated retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, who has been credited with many scholarly judicial decisions, including his landmark lead judgement in NPP v Attorney General (31st December Case), which outlawed the continuous celebration of the infamous 31st December dastardly coup, by the PNDC/NDC and their assigns.
Alma is a proud product of Accra Girls Senior High School; Ghana Institute of Languages; Weymouth College, UK; London South Bank University; and Manchester University College, UK, as well as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), UK.
Just like her husband, Mrs. Alma Opoku Prempeh is an articulate and outspoken woman, with a compassionate heart and a great passion for public service and community development through servant-leadership. Her vision includes leveraging on her professional expertise to enhance public service delivery in Ghana, and ensuring that our resources are effectively utilised for maximum returns.
Alma’s exploits at Morden College, a non-governmental organisation in London, where she worked for over a decade in a top management position, highlight her dedication to enhancing the lives of vulnerable populations through effective financial management and strategic planning.
Alma is indeed your go-to person when it comes to attending to the needs and general well-being of the vulnerable in society.
To conclude, if you were to ask what Mrs Opoku Prempeh brings to the table for the NPP and Ghana in general, you would be told that she brings decades of experience in public service, professionalism, topnotch communication prowess, selflessness, strategic thinking and planning, as well as results-orientated servant leadership.
These unique attributes make her a valuable addition to the NPP 2024 campaign. We are going to see a lot from her in this campaign season and beyond. Mrs Prempeh is going to demonstrate that she is more than worthy of the position of Second Lady of the Republic. So, as far as the 2024 campaign is concerned, the NDC is not only going to contend with Hajia Samira Bawumia but also Mrs Alma Opoku Prempeh. Only time will tell if the NDC can survive this.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region, Kwadwo Asante, has officially announced his decision to contest the upcoming December 7th, 2024 general election as an independent candidate.
This move follows his defeat in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary earlier this year.
Asante, widely known by his moniker “Boafo,” lost the January 2024 NPP primary to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, also known as “Protozoa,” by a margin of 179 votes. Protozoa secured 496 votes against Asante’s 320, making him the new NPP parliamentary candidate for Suhum.
Despite his defeat, Asante’s supporters have rallied around him, insisting that he is the preferred choice for the constituency. Over the weekend, during a Health Walk at Suhum Amponsah Market, Asante addressed his supporters and officially declared his intention to run as an independent candidate. He cited the overwhelming support from his constituents as the driving force behind his decision.
“I am the helper this constituency needs,” Asante said, emphasizing that his decision to contest is in response to the calls from the people.
“My developmental agenda for Suhum cannot be truncated abruptly,” he added, reinforcing his commitment to continue his work for the area.
The announcement comes despite efforts by high-ranking NPP officials, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minister of Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, to persuade Asante to stay within the party. Sources indicate that Asante had previously given assurances that he would not run independently, but the events of the past weekend have upended those plans.
Tensions within the Suhum NPP have been simmering since Asante’s victory in the 2020 general election, which saw him unseat then-MP Fredrick Opare Ansah in the party’s primary.
The rivalry between Asante’s followers and those of Protozoa has led to several confrontations, with some resulting in violence. The Suhum Constituency has a history of political unrest, dating back to the 2008 election cycle.
Asante has since launched his independent campaign under the slogan “Oboafo Toaso” (Oboafo Continue), distributing posters and T-shirts to solidify his position.
His supporters believe that his independent candidacy will resonate with the broader electorate, who view him as the true representative of Suhum’s interests.
The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has beefed up its campaign efforts in the Tano North Constituency, targeting the settler and Fulani communities to secure their support in the upcoming elections.
The party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, alongside the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the area, Dr. Gideon Boako met with Fulani leaders and settlers to discuss their concerns and seek their backing for both Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, and Dr. Boako’s bid to retain the parliamentary seat.
During the meeting, Justin Frimpong Kodua, affectionately known as JFK, introduced Dr. Boako as the ideal representative for the constituency.
“Dr. Boako is a man of integrity, a brilliant economist, and he understands your needs,” Mr. Kodua stated. “He holds a special place in his heart for the Fulani community and is committed to addressing your concerns and challenges.”
In his address, Dr. Boako assured the Fulani community of his dedication to their welfare, outlining plans to enhance their livelihoods. His proposals included initiatives to support livestock farming, education, and healthcare within the community.
“I believe in the potential of the Fulani community to contribute to the development of Tano North,” Dr. Boako said. “I am working hard to ensure that your voices are heard and your concerns addressed.”
The Fulani leaders and settlers expressed their gratitude for the NPP’s outreach efforts, pledging their support for Dr. Boako’s candidacy and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign.
“We are impressed with Dr. Boako’s vision and commitment to our community,” said Alhaji Osman Seidu, a Fulani leader. “We will rally behind the NPP and ensure victory in the upcoming elections.”
The Minority in Parliament has criticized the government for allegedly using military forces to scare voters under the pretext of enforcing a newly imposed ban on grain exports, due to a severe drought affecting northern Ghana.
Government imposed an immediate ban on grain exports to safeguard domestic food supplies on August 26, 2024,
Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul confirmed that military forces have been stationed at the borders to implement this restriction.
However, the Minority has raised concerns, alleging that the military presence might be a covert attempt to suppress voter turnout.
At a press conference in Accra on August 30, 2024, James Agalga, Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, criticized the absence of a clear timeline for the military’s deployment.
“If they have no ulterior motives, then they ought to have given us timelines,” Mr. Agalga argued.
He continued that: “The fact that there are no timelines gives us reason to suspect that they only used the crisis, related to the drought up north and the potential for us to have some food security challenges, to deploy the military to intimidate voters.”
Mr. Agalga also referenced the military’s role in the 2020 elections to support his argument.
“Otherwise, there should be timelines. We further backed our assertions with what happened in the roundup of the 2020 elections…So our suspicions are justifiable,” he added.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Tano North Constituency and Spokesperson to the Vice President, Dr. Gideon Boako, has donated 2,000 dual desks to the Tano North Municipal Education Directorate.
This initiative aims to enhance the quality of teaching and learning across the municipality.
The donation aligns with Dr. Boako’s broader vision of elevating educational standards in Tano North, ensuring that every child in the area has access to quality education and the necessary tools to succeed.
During a brief ceremony in Duayaw Nkwanta, Dr. Boako, accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ernest Kwarteng, emphasized the importance of education in societal development.
He noted that the desks would be distributed to schools in need, addressing the furniture shortages that have long been a challenge in the area.
“Education and human capital development have always been at the forefront of my priorities,” Dr. Boako stated. “This is why I have invested heavily in the youth of this area, sponsoring many to pursue higher education both in Ghana and abroad. Quality education is the bedrock of societal progress, and I am dedicated to ensuring that students in Tano North receive the best possible learning environment.”
Dr. Boako further expressed his commitment to working closely with the government, alongside President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Bawumia, to continue supporting the development of education in the region. He assured the gathering that efforts to address the challenges faced by schools would remain a top priority, with the goal of creating a conducive learning environment for all students.
He also urged school authorities to maintain the desks properly, stressing the importance of caring for the resources provided to the schools to ensure their longevity.
In addition to his focus on infrastructure, Dr. Boako offered words of encouragement to students currently sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), urging them to approach their exams with confidence. He assured them of his best wishes and prayers for their success.
Mr. Ekow Mensa, the Tano North Municipal Education Director, expressed deep gratitude for the timely donation, highlighting that this intervention would significantly alleviate the furniture shortages in schools and improve the overall educational experience for students.
He also commended the teachers in the municipality for their continued dedication, urging them to persist in their efforts to build a robust educational system, which he described as crucial for the future of the region.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has committed to enhancing Ghana’s security by installing 50,000 CCTV cameras in major towns across the country.
Announcing this plan during his campaign in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency, Dr. Bawumia stated that a recent security assessment revealed the need for 50,000 CCTV cameras to adequately monitor roads in regional and district capitals.
He acknowledged that while the government has initiated CCTV installations, coverage remains incomplete.
In addition to his security proposal, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the significance of adopting a “Buy Ghana First” policy. He argued that by prioritising locally produced goods, Ghanaians can stimulate business growth and create more job opportunities.
During his campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia engaged with religious leaders, including clergy, imams, and chiefs in the Ashongman Estate area.
Former Speaker of Parliament, Mike Ocquaye, lauded Dr. Bawumia for his intellectual prowess and significant contributions to the NPP.
“When there were controversies about election matters and we had gathered a lot of information, Frank Davis and others toiled but how to put the things together in an acceptable formula for court, that work was done by Dr. Bawumia, today he has another name called Mr. pink sheet.”
“All matters as to how we use the pink sheet to look after the controversies of the election, that was the man who stood in court. You could see the star in him, but I say it’s a gift. If you don’t take advantage of such a gift, it’s your own cause.”
Dr. Bawumia also outlined the achievements of the NPP government and emphasised the need for enhanced security measures, including installing CCTV cameras.
“I called national security, and I said what will it take for Ghana to have CCTV on all the streets in all of our regional capitals and all of our district capitals so that we can see any crime that is taking place, we can at least have a clue.”
“So, they came back to me, and they said they need 50000 CCTV cameras, and they are going to get 50000 CCTV cameras, which we are going to provide so that the police can have visibility for every movement because we don’t have many police officers.”
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has highlighted his government’s commendable performance despite facing significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
He emphasised that his administration has made notable strides in various sectors of the economy.
Addressing the 13th Biennial and 51st Conference of the Methodist Church of Ghana in Kumasi, the President called on Ghanaians to place their trust in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, encouraging them to support his bid to carry forward the initiatives and progress set in motion by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
“I can say in all good conscience that I have not betrayed the mandate the good people of Ghana conferred on me on two successive occasions.
“All this has been done in part due to the support I have received from you and the Church and, above all due to the grace of Almighty God, through whom I express my deepest gratitude.
“I pray that you continue with the same level of cooperation with my successor, God willing, my Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and his dynamic running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known to all and sundry here in Kumasi as NAPO.”
A supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has threatened the life of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo.
During a segment on TV3’s “Community Watch,” Mr Amponsah alleged that Dumelo has been issuing threats as part of his campaign.
He noted that the NPP supporters will not cower to any form of intimidation. According to him, he and others have been through hard times in the desert where they were forced to drink urine to survive.
“I want to tell John Dumelo… all your talks are threats…. we were those in the desert and had to drink urine. Has he drunk urine before? Enough of your threats. One day, monkey will go to the market and monkey will not return,” he said.
As it stands now, The Independent Ghana has not come across any video or information that suggests that Mr Dumelo has been issuing threats to constituents.
Actor John Dumelo made a reckless statement today that, Mama Lydia killed her husband to become MP. He further threatened the constituents who doesn't support him. The response he got will shock you. Monkey will go to market and won't return one day. @Truthonly1122 @Gen_Buhari_pic.twitter.com/Sfr7VT6OTM
In a related event, Dumelo has issued an apology for his recent accusations against Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency.
During a segment on TV3’s “Community Watch,” Dumelo implied that Alhassan may have been involved in her husband’s death to gain political power.
His remarks came after NPP supporters taunted him with references to the “V8 saga” during his speech. Dumelo has since retracted his statements and expressed regret for his unfounded claims.
He said, “I want to say something. I can see their supporters have been mentioning V8, V8, V8. If that is the case, then it is also fair to say that maybe Lydia is the one who killed her husband to become MP.
That is it because if they want to go that tangent, I can also go the same tangent. If they want to go that tangent, I will go the same tangent because this time around, it is boot for boot.”
John Dumelo’s recent remarks about Lydia Seyram Alhassan did not go down well with many social media users, particularly on X (formerly Twitter).
Facing backlash for his comments, Dumelo responded by taking to X to issue an apology.
He acknowledged his mistake and expressed regret for the statement he made during the TV3 “Community Watch” program, aiming to clear the air and mend relations with those offended by his words.
“I apologise and retract the comments I made earlier today on TV3,” he said.
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi attempted to campaign at the office of the ruling party’s ‘archnemesis’, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
His plan to convince opposition party supporters at Akomadan in the Offinso North Constituency failed to materialise.
Upon his utter surprise upon entering the office, per a video gone viral on social media, there was not a single personnel present.
Some users who have reacted to this video have questioned Chairman Wontumi’s motive. Some users noted that the NPP executive might have had the intention of causing conflict with his surprise visit.
“This is childish, you already know who they support going there with your message and they’ll be forced to sack you from the office then conflict sets in .. I’m pretty they got a hint that this is gonna happen that’s why the left the office,” a user wrote.

Some tax analysts are raising concerns over the ambitious tax proposals put forward by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in their manifestos, particularly regarding plans to remove the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) and the COVID-19 Levy.
The analysts caution that these proposals, set to be implemented under an International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, could have significant financial repercussions for the country.
According to tax consultant Francis Timore Boi, the combined revenue from the COVID-19 Levy and the E-Levy is projected to generate approximately GHC7.7 billion in 2025.
Speaking to Joy Business, Mr. Timore Boi warned that the blanket removal of these taxes without alternative revenue-generating measures could derail the IMF programme, which is focused on improving government revenue and ensuring that expenditure is redirected to critical areas to help alleviate poverty.
“If any policy you seek to introduce may bring down revenue, the IMF may not be happy with that. You are planning to abolish the COVID-19 levy and the E-Levy. COVID-19 levy alone in 2025 is estimated to bring in about GHC5.6 billion. If you take it off, how are you going to replace it? In 2025, we are expecting E-Levy to give us about GHC2.1 billion and in 2026, it is projected to increase to about GHC2.4 billion,” he explained.
Mr. Timore Boi expressed concern that neither of the major political parties has proposed an alternative revenue model to make up for the potential shortfall resulting from the removal of these taxes. He emphasized the importance of having a workable budget that provides a clear plan for addressing the revenue shocks that would occur if these taxes were abolished.
“It is important because the budget has not shown us that you are going to introduce new taxes,” he noted.
While acknowledging that the E-Levy is unpopular and that there is a general sentiment in favor of its removal, Mr. Timore Boi stressed the need for a broader discussion on how to fill the financial gaps that will be created by its abolishment.
Without a solid plan in place, he warned, the proposed tax cuts could run counter to the objectives of the IMF programme and jeopardize the country’s economic stability.
Vice president and flagbearerof the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bawumia, had a lot to answer during his media engagement on Sunday, August 25, 2025.
The event saw the presence of seasoned journalists from several reputable media houses, such as TV3’s Bella Mundi, GH One’s Natalie Fort and Channel One TV’s Frema Adunyame, among others.
During the question segment, Channel One’s journalist quizzed Dr Bawumia on what he considers the ‘2 failures’ of his current administration and how he’d correct them.
In response, the vice president named the Gold For Oil Policy (G4O) and adequate infrastructure in Senior High School (SHS).
He wished his government had started the G4O policy earlier than its implementation in 2022.
“I wish, for example, we had started the gold purchase much earlier. If we had started it earlier during our first term, for example, the buffer in terms of gold would have been much bigger.
A few years ago we had 8.7 tonnes of gold, and so far they have bought about 72 tonnes or so. It is something that I wish when I sit back and look. I wish we had been able to buy a bit more and start gold for oil and reserve much earlier, but as I said, the crisis made us get into these policies,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia also, highlighted infrastructure development in secondary schools as a significant achievement of his government, claiming it has made considerable strides in Ghana’s education sector since independence.
However, he also admitted challenges in completing certain projects within senior high schools.
While emphasising the overall progress, he acknowledged that some infrastructure initiatives have faced delays, reflecting both the successes and ongoing hurdles in their efforts to improve the educational landscape.
“Even though we’ve built more school infrastructure than any government, I believe that we still had challenges with SHS. i had completed a bit more in terms of accommodation inSenior High Schools (SHS)and dining halls.
This is one of the reasons why I want us to move government expenditure away from government to the private sector. This is a major policy we’re bringing on” he added.
Former president and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has taken a jab at NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia, following his media engagement on August 25, 2024.
In a video making trends on X (formerly Twitter) shared by Ghanaian blogger @KALYJAY, Mahama is seen humorously criticising Bawumia’s struggle with stuttering and stammering when responding to questions from the press.
Mahama, during a community engagement at Kasseh, a town in the Ada East district, teased the vice president.
“You can speak rata-ta-ta-ta like AK 47; suddenly media encounter errrm !eerr errrm ! I think errm errm “
Dr Bawumia following his manifesto, announced his decision to meet the press on August 25.
During this encounter,he gave some answers, such as how Ghanaians expect of him to honour all the promises he has given as a flagbearer as a vice president. On his part, “if I do everything now what would I do when I come into office?” that sparked controversies.
The New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has addressed critics from the opposition who have labeled him a liar through the hashtag #Bawuliar.
He noted that while some may label him a liar, he finds solace in the fact that, unlike his boss Akufo-Addo, he’s not been accused of being a murderer.
“Well..at least I’m not called a murderer as my boss was called or I’m not called a drug dealer or even I’m not called government official one,” Bawumia said while addressing the media yesterday August 25, at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra.
The current Vice President commended Joy FM and AAOSI for their work which exposed the NDC, adding that on every proposal he made, which the NDC said he was lying, he successfully achieved them, thereby exposing the NDC.
“Interestingly, whenever I come up with something and they say it is impossible and that I am lying, we prove them wrong… But when we do, they don’t come back,” he said.

Prophet Kusi Appiah, widely known as the Warrior Prophet of Charisma Temple International Ministry, has predicted a victory for Vice President and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
During an appearance on Metro TV’s ‘Good Evening Ghana’ with Paul Adom-Otchere, the Prophet declared that Dr. Bawumia’s win in 2024 is divinely ordained and unchangeable.
He emphasised that, according to a revelation from God, Bawumia is destined to be the next president of Ghana.
“Its a done deal, sealed. God has revealed to me that he will be the president, not that I’m on his side. It is something God has written, and no man can erase that,” he said during a discussion on the “spiritual dynamics of the 2024 elections discussion on Metro TV on August 20, 2024.
Touching on the Volta Region, which has gained popularity over the years as a stronghold of the NDC, the Warrior Prophet noted that votes for the NPP would see an increase with Bawumia as the candidate.
However, he predicted that the NPP would lose in the Greater Accra Region, but only by a very small margin.
Dr Bawumia will do well in the Volta Region, where Akufo-Addo and Kuffour couldn’t. The NPP will lose the Greater Accra region by a very slim margin. NPP will win in the Central Region.
The Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has hit back at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, who urged voters to support him in “resetting” Ghana.
At the NDC’s Manifesto launch, Mahama emphasized the urgency for voters to back him, claiming that the nation is “bleeding” and its “soul is crying for change.”
In response, during a media engagement on Sunday, August 25, Dr. Bawumia argued that what Ghana truly needs is an upgrade, not a reset.
He outlined 14 key commitments he plans to fulfill if elected in the 2024 elections, including job creation and transforming Ghana into a world-class digital economy.
“I represent the future, Ghana needs an upgrade, not a reset. I have also outlined my 14 key commitments to the Ghanaian people. These are to sustain and expand Ghana’s rebounding economy, create new jobs, implement wide-ranging tax reforms, and build Ghana into a world-class digital economy.
“Reduce the cost of living, expand public infrastructure, provide better healthcare for all, Implement Affirmative Action for girls and women, provide good governance, care for the elderly, and expand educational opportunities for all. Protect our borders while keeping our neighbourhood safe.”
Vice President and presidential candidate for theNew Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has clarified his role and responsibilities as Vice President, emphasising that his current role is to support the President’s vision rather than implement his own.
In a recent discussion, Dr. Bawumia addressed questions about why he is not advancing his personal agenda while serving as Vice President. He explained that his position is primarily to assist the President in executing the existing agenda and that he has limited power to pursue independent policies.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted that, should he become President, he will gain the authority to implement his proposed policies fully. To illustrate the constraints of the vice-presidential role, he pointed out that the recent parliamentary budget approval reflects the President’s priorities, not his own.
“The budget that was approved by Parliament went to Parliament in the name of the president, so it is the president’s budget. It is not my budget,” he said.
“That is why I have outlined my own plans and my own vision, which I can implement when I become President with full authority in three months, inshaa Allah.”
Dr Bawumia also asked that if he, who has never been president before, is being asked to implement his vision now as Vice President, then what about former President Mahama, who, even as a former President, wants to come back?
“Why didn’t he do all those things he wants to come back and do when he was president? He has been president before with full authority, and he could have done all the things he is mentioning now.
“I have never been president before, and I have never had full authority before. That is why I have come up with my own new ideas.”
New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate has taken a strong stand against John Dramani Mahama’s proposal to reinstate the licenses of certain defunct financial institutions.
During the NDC’s manifesto launch in Winneba, Mahama pledged to restore these licenses, alleging they were wrongfully revoked by the NPP administration.
In response, Dr. Bawumia, in a recent media interaction, expressed astonishment at Mahama’s promise.
He argued that the NPP’s interventions were crucial in safeguarding the savings of 4.6 million customers who faced potential losses had the banks not been restructured.
Dr. Bawumia detailed that many of the troubled banks had been involved in serious financial misconduct, including exceeding loan limits, mishandling capital, and misappropriating funds for personal ventures.
He emphasized that these measures were essential to avert a broader financial crisis and maintain stability in the banking sector.
He urged Mahama to review the findings of the Receiver and the Bank of Ghana reports for a comprehensive understanding of the situation before making further statements.
“We saved the deposits of 4.6 million bank depositors who really were going to lose their deposits if those banks were not saved. I don’t understand whether the former president has taken his time to understand the banking sector. Some atrocious things and this is why these banks had to be saved.
“They were not collapsed, they were merged into other banks and no banking depositor lost 1 cedi, everybody maintained. But very bad things happened, some of the banks broke all the rules and extended loans way above the single obligor limits.”
“They were given, in some cases 1 billion by the Bank of Ghana to help them out of the mess and they only got deeper into the situation. Other banks were given capital to save the situation, and they used that money to set up Capital Bank, instead of rescuing the problem that they had. They took the money from the central bank and set up another business which also collapsed. Some took money and invested in private properties.”
“So, it was against this background that the governor came to report, and this was one of my nightmares in the last eight years. Most people didn’t understand how close we were to a collapse of the entire banking system.
This is how we had to merge many of these banking sectors into other banks, and we saved 4.6 million depositors.”
“I’ll ask the former president if he hasn’t read, to go and read the receiver’s report or theBoG’s reportand acquaint himself before making any further comments on matters he clearly doesn’t understand.
He needs to get an understanding before making further comments, and he cannot hand over a bank’s license to them, this is subject to legal procedure.
Presidential Candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has firmly stated that he is undeterred by the criticism and insults that often come his way in the political sphere.
He emphasized that his dedication to serving the people of Ghana remains unwavering, and that negative commentary will not distract him from his objectives.
“When you are in politics, it’s part of the course. In a sense, there’s not much you can do. People, just for no reason, but for their own parochial reasons, will insult you.
“But as long as it doesn’t stop me from doing what I want to do for the people of Ghana, I will not be perturbed,” he said.
Dr Bawumia has been under scrutiny since he became the flagbearer of the governing NPP with many of his critics accusing him of being a liar.
However, speaking at a media engagement on Sunday, Dr Bawumia stated that he remains focused on his objectives and determination to push forward with his agenda for national development.
“As they keep insulting me, I’ll keep getting things done for our people,” he asserted.
The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, hosted a media engagement on Sunday, August 25, 2024, in Accra.
This event comes a week after the NPP launched its manifesto.
The media engagement allowed the presidential candidate to interact with the media and provide the public with a clearer understanding of his vision ahead of the December 7 presidential election.
Dr. Bawumia used the platform to discuss the NPP manifesto in greater detail.
Former President John Dramani Mahama, leading the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2024 general elections, has introduced a series of ambitious proposals as part of the party’s manifesto.
These plans, presented during a launch event in Winneba on August 24, 2024, aim to address critical areas such as overhauling the education system, implementing stringent anti-corruption initiatives, and improving land administration and management.
Here are some key highlights of the manifesto:
1.Cancellation of the double-track system:
John Dramani Mahama has promised to abolish the double-track system currently in place in senior high schools.
This system, implemented by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2018, was designed to manage the increased student population resulting from the Free Senior High School (FSHS) program.
Mahama’s plan includes upgrading the infrastructure of secondary schools and improving the FSHS program’s execution. His goal is to eliminate the need for the double-track system altogether, ensuring a more streamlined and effective educational experience.
2.Ban on family and appointees from acquiring state assets:
John Dramani Mahama has pledged to reinvestigate past incidents of electoral violence and related crimes if elected.
He specifically mentioned revisiting the 2020 election-related violence, the disturbances during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, and the tragic murder of journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale.
Mahama has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the current government’s lack of action on these unresolved cases and its failure to compensate the victims. He promised to seek justice for those affected and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
3. Overhaul of the scholarship scheme:
The NDC flagbearer has pledged to reform the government scholarship programme, which he claims has been compromised by state officials applying for benefits intended for the underprivileged.
According to him, under his administration, no government official or political appointee will be allowed to apply for scholarships.
4. Reopening of unresolved electoral cases:
John Dramani Mahama has pledged to reinvestigate past incidents of electoral violence and related crimes if elected. He specifically mentioned revisiting the 2020 election-related violence, the disturbances during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, and the tragic murder of journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale.
Mahama has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the current government’s lack of action on these unresolved cases and its failure to compensate the victims. He promised to seek justice for those affected and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
5. Commission of inquiry on State Lands
In reaction to claims of state land mismanagement by the current government, John Dramani Mahama has pledged to set up a Commission of Inquiry. This proposed body will investigate accusations of state land misappropriation, with a special emphasis on the contentious Ga-Dangbe land issues.
The commission will be charged with uncovering the facts behind these allegations and providing actionable recommendations to address the ongoing challenges in public land administration.
The former deputy education minister accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of deceiving “God, the clergy, and the Ghanaian people.”
Addressing the controversial National Cathedral project, Ablakwa criticized the government for demolishing numerous structures, only to create what he described as “the most expensive hole in the world.”
Ablakwa made these remarks during the launch of the NDC’s 2024 Manifesto in Winneba, Central Region, on Saturday, August 24, 2024.
He recounted how “in the process” of actualizing the president’s personal religious dream, “so many edifices were demolished,” including, but not limited to, “the judiciary training institute, judges’ bungalows, scholarship secretariat, passport head office, and the Malian ambassador’s residence.”
“Did you ever hear Mahama say he woke up with a nightmare and so has decided to make a personal pledge, and so he’s going to sink 58.1 million dollars into the world’s most expensive pit?” Ablakwa quizzed.
He described Mahama as a nation-builder who, during his presidency, built “the University of Ghana Medical Centre, Ridge Hospital, Shai-Osudoku Hospital, Terminal 3 at the Kotoka International Airport, Kumasi Airport, Tamale Airport, Ho Airport,” etc., comparing him to the current president, who “is demolishing, destroying in a deceptive pledge where he says he will not use our taxes.”
“How can you say these two people are the same and that these two parties are the same?” Ablakwa asked in admonishment.
The notion that the NDC and NPPare the same is “baseless and unfounded,” he stressed. “The NDC is different.”
Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to begin preparing their handing over notes.
Speaking at the launch of the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, Mahama did not hold back in his criticism of the NPP’s performance in government.
Addressing the crowd of party faithful, the former President said, “Your vote on December 7 will end the tyranny, cronyism, corruption. It will also pave the way for vision, experience, and trustworthiness, and I, John Dramani Mahama, am going to restore that to the Flagstaff House.”
He continued, issuing a pointed message to the ruling party, stating, “This government must begin writing their handing over notes if they have not started doing so already.”
His speech also included strong accusations, with the former president asserting that the NPP’s tenure has been the most deceptive in Ghana’s political history.
“This NPP administration has been the biggest political scam that has been pulled on Ghanaians since our independence,” Mahama declared.
Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s 2024 manifesto, alleging that it is merely a repetition of previous promises and rhetoric.
Speaking on JoyNews’ NewsFile on August 24, Fuseini expressed disappointment with the manifesto’s content, asserting that it echoes past assurances made by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, which he claims remain unfulfilled.
“Their manifesto is a mere repetition and rhetoric. He told you he was going to move Ghana from taxation to production. He told you there was no reason why Ghana roads should not be paved with concrete. He said that kayaye ought not to be living at Agbobloshie but he was going to move them and build for them,” Fuseini said.
He criticized the NPP for failing to deliver on these promises, pointing to the government’s track record on various initiatives.
“He told us many things. He told us the NPP was developing the largest hydroelectric and irrigation dam in the north. What we have come to realise is that money has been sunk in the dam with no results. So there are many things that he said,” Fuseini added.
Moreover, Mr Fuseini alleged that the NPP’s 2024 manifesto includes 320 promises that closely mirror those from the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s 2020 manifesto. He accused the NPP of borrowing from the NDC’s previous proposals, asserting that the current manifesto lacks originality.
“When we said we were going to establish a women’s bank because there should be gender inclusiveness in the economic development of this country and the best way is to establish a financial institution that would care for and provide the sources, what did they (NPP) say? Now, they said they are going to establish a fund,” he explained.
A Ghanaian citizen, identified as Afia, has expressed frustration over the disillusion with voting processes.
She has vowed not to vote again because she believe that delegates (who are typically party representatives or key decision-makers) receive GHS 5,000 as a bribe or incentive, while ordinary voters like herself only receive GHS 200 to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“Recently, Shirley informed us, the pure water vendors, that we would each receive GHS 500 to start our businesses. However, when some of us showed up, we were told that this isn’t our voting center. It seems that, even though we are all NPP members, Shirley is insisting that you must vote in his constituency to get the GHS 500.”
“When they come, they try to sway your vote by offering GHS 200. Meanwhile, the delegates have already received GHS 5,000, along with fridges and other items, and then they approach me, trying to convince me to vote for the NPP,” Afia expressed.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) plans to engage in discussions with former Gender, Children, and Social Protection Minister, Cynthia Morrison, following her decision to contest the Agona West parliamentary seat as an independent candidate in the upcoming December 7, 2024, elections.
Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP’s General Secretary, underscored the importance of party unity as the NPP aims to secure an unprecedented third consecutive term in office.
Morrison, who currently represents Agona West in Parliament, opted to run independently after losing in the NPP’s recent parliamentary primaries.
The party leadership is now seeking to address the situation and ensure cohesion as they prepare for the upcoming general elections.
Speaking to her constituents, she declared, “God willing, I will be contesting the parliamentary election as an independent candidate. It is not about the NDC, and it is not about the NPP. It is about the development of Agona.”
Morrison urged her followers to support her independent candidacy and reiterated her commitment to Agona West’s advancement in spite of the initial setback.
Kodua Frimpong in an interview on Thursday, August 22, 2024 emphasized the NPP’s emphasis on unity and its attempts to reunite all members, including those who are thinking about running for office independently, a report by citinewsroom.com said.
“As a political party, for this year’s election which has been our mantra, we are going to break the eight. In breaking the eight means we need to do exceptional things and bring everybody on board. Our objective is to make sure that all our party faithful are brought on board.
“So, taking steps that will make sure that at least we engage those who are going independent is something that we are going to do rather than whether to write them a letter or not to write them a letter.
What we want to do is to bring everybody on board…the party leadership will continue to engage her,” Kodua stated.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed its commitment to engage in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary debates organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).
The IEA recently established a 9-member Presidential Debate Committee, chaired by Justice Sophia Akuffo, to manage interactions with political parties and ensure that the debates remain focused on substantive, issue-driven discussions that resonate with the electorate.
In a conversation with Eyewitness News, Justin Kodua highlighted the significance of these debates as a vital opportunity for political parties to communicate their visions and policies to the public.
Reflecting on past elections, where the NPP chose not to participate in similar debates in 2014 and 2016, Kodua emphasized that the party is now eager to showcase its accomplishments and provide voters with a clear comparison of each party’s offerings.
“The reason why we are interested in this debate is for us to be able to espouse what our flagbearer has been going around the country and talking about in terms of his vision for the country in the next four years.
So, if for instance in 2014 and 2016, there were reasons why the party didn’t attend but this time around the party is ready for any debate because we feel that as a nation we have made progress and also the election between the NPP and the other political parties, Ghanaians need to know what each political parties offer the best and credible manifesto,” he stated.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has shown hesitation about taking part in the upcoming debates organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), expressing concerns over the lack of prior consultation.
The Mahama 2024 campaign team has strongly criticized the IEA for announcing the debates without first engaging the NDC, deeming this approach unacceptable.
Nevertheless, the IEA is determined to move forward with the debates, even if the NDC decides not to participate.
Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, a key member of the Presidential Debate Committee, highlighted the IEA’s proven track record of organizing successful debates, regardless of the involvement of all political parties.
He stressed the significance of voter engagement and reiterated the IEA’s willingness to engagein further discussions with any interested political party.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will decide on the second deputy speaker of Parliament and independent Member of Parliament (MP) for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, as its candidate for the 2024 general elections, Asaase news has gathered.
A reliable source in the party is saying that this development is a turning point for the relationship between the NPP and Asiamah, who was sacked from the party under fraught conditions.
This has also been proven by lawyer William Kusi, secretary of the Ashanti Regional NPP reconciliation committee.
Mr Kusi explained that this move was in the best interest of the party, given the unique circumstances surrounding Asiamah’s exit and his subsequent role in supporting the NPP’s majority in Parliament.
“Asiamah is coming and it is so because we need to secure the seat,” Kusi told Kumasi-based Oyerepa TV.
“It is important for people to wait for others to go so that they can follow. And I am sure that whoever is nursing that ambition should not throw it away…But for the love of the party and the fact that we want to break the 8, there are certain things we have to do differently. What is most important is the victory”, he stated.
“As a political party, people will always have concerns and so wisdom will tell you that call the people to resolve their concerns and let’s move on. And so these are some of the things we do as a political party to get everybody on board”, he further added.
Mr Asiamah’s exit from the NPP before the 2020 elections was fraught with controversy. Following disputes with the party’s leadership over internal matters, he decided to run as an independent candidate, which resulted in his expulsion from the party.
Nonetheless, he successfully secured the Fomena seat, a key win that left the NPP without a clear majority in Parliament.
After his re-election as an independent, Asiamah chose to join the Majority Caucus, enabling the NPP to achieve a narrow majority and retain control of the legislative agenda.
His decision to align with the NPP, despite his independent status, highlighted his dedication to the party’s broader objectives, even after being expelled.
As the 2024 elections draw near, Ghanaians are increasingly becoming vocal about their concerns, particularly regarding the manifesto unveiled by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
When The Independent Ghana visited Madina Constituency in Greater Accra, residents expressed deep scepticism about the promises made by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), with many citing economic hardships as the basis for their doubts.
Madam Comfort, a shoe seller at Madina Goil filling station, was unequivocal in her criticism. “All that he said are lies. Because even Akufo-Addo has disappointed us. He didn’t fulfil any of the promises he gave us; it is all lies,” she said.
Mr. Anokye, a fellow trader, dismissed Dr. Bawumia’s claim of being merely a “driver’s mate” in the administration, arguing that the Vice President is complicit in what he described as “wicked” policies.
“Every policy implemented under his watch is proof that none of the promises, such as scrapping the e-levy, are anything more than stillborn ideas,” he stated.
Commuter Mr. Meyers took a more measured stance but still questioned the leadership needed to guide the country. “I have no problem with Bawumia, but Ghana needs a strong leader who will be able to build us,” he remarked.
Wahab, a belt seller, shared his doubts, pointing to the rising cost of goods. “Under Mahama’s government, a belt at wholesale was 10 cedis. Now, under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government, we buy at 20 and sell at 30,” he noted.
Aunty Grace, a self-proclaimed staunch NPP supporter, expressed her disillusionment with the government’s unfulfilled promises, vowing never to vote again. “As I have always said, never would I vote in any election in Ghana again. The deception has become too much, too much deception. Now we have ‘shine-our eyes,’” she declared.
However, Lady Gagabelieves Dr Bawumia is capable of fulfilling all his campaign promises.
She empathises with the ‘disappointed’ in the Akufo-Addo -Bawumia led, attributing the government’s failure to his flagship programme i.e the Free SHS policy
Dr. Bawumia’s manifesto includes promises to abolish the e-levy, remove VAT on electricity if still on the books, scrap the emissions tax and betting tax, and fully automate Tema Port.
He also pledged to align port duties at Tema with those at Lome Port, introduce flat-rate duties for spare parts importers, and reduce the cost of data by working with industry players to establish clear policy guidelines.
As the election season progresses, whether these promises will sway voters or if the scepticism heard in places like Madina will dominate the public’s perception remains to be seen.
National Deputy Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has outlined two key expectations for the flagbearer and Vice President of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prove his eligibility as a candidate for the upcoming December 7 general elections.
Basintale’s comments come in response to the NPP’s manifesto launch on Sunday, August 18, 2024, in Takoradi. During an appearance on GHOne earlier in the week, he criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of displaying a double-faced character that undermines his credibility.
According to Basintale, Dr. Bawumia’s attempts to distance himself from the current economic challenges facing Ghana while simultaneously boasting about his achievements in comparison to former President John Mahama raise serious doubts about his integrity and competence.
To be taken seriously as a presidential candidate, Basintale argues that Dr. Bawumia must fulfill two specific criteria, which he believes are essential for establishing the Vice President’s credibility and trustworthiness.
“Bawumia at one point says at a point in time, I wasn’t in charge of affairs , at a point I wasn’t at the helm of affairs. He says that he performed better than Mahama.
Two things Bawumia must do before we judge him or before we even think of going into the election and even remembering him on the ballot paper.
He must either admit for the 8 years of Akufo-Addo he was entirely useless or he must admit that he was at the helm of affairs and was highly incompetent.
So where does he stand? There are two things Bawumia must do for us before we judge him. Or before we even think of going into the elections and even remember him on the ballot paper” he stated
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Agona West, Cynthia Morrison, has announced her decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
The former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection made this revelation during a recent interaction with her constituents, emphasizing that her decision transcends party politics.
“God willing, I would be contesting the parliamentary election as an independent candidate. It is not about the NDC, and it is not about the NPP. It is about the development of Agona,” Morrison declared.
Her decision follows her defeat in the NPP parliamentary primary held on April 13, where she secured 152 votes against Christopher Arthur, who garnered 240 votes to win the party’s nomination.
Despite her loss, Morrison, who has represented Agona West since 2016, remains focused on the development of her constituency.
She called on the people to rally behind her candidacy, stating, “I don’t care whether you vote for former President John Dramani Mahama or Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. But the most important thing is for you to vote massively for Cynthia Morrison so I can come and complete the work I started.”
Morrison first won the Agona West seat in the 2016 general elections and retained it in 2020 as the NPP candidate, receiving 30,513 votes out of the 59,193 valid votes cast.
New Patriotic Party’s Flagbearer,Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is set to hold a media engagement on Sunday, August 25, 2024.
This event comes after the successful launch of the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 Manifesto.
A statement issued by Denis Miracles Aboagye, Communications Director for Bawumia’s 2024 campaign team, said, “Dr. Bawumia is strongly convinced; the Ghanaian people deserve to have a complete view and proper understanding of the vision of their leaders before the 2024 December polls, and the manifesto properly sets the context for the conversation.”
The statement noted that this crucial media engagement is one of several activities planned by Dr. Bawumia to further promote and communicate the 2024 Manifesto.

Some Ghanaians have planned to stay at home and enjoy a good meal rather than participate in the voting process on election day.
This is the intention of a young Ghanaian man named Fifi.
He told The Independent Ghana during a vox pop session with citizens that he doesn’t see any difference his vote makes.
He mentioned that he voted against Mahama, only for Akufo-Addo “to be presented as the same to us.”
Therefore, this year, he will not exert his energy and time to cast votes for any candidate.
“For me that day I will prepare a very sumptuous meal and enjoy. That is if I am in the country.”
Ghana will soon be heading to the polls on December 7, 2024.
The battle is set to ensue between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
With both parties presenting strong candidates and a host of promises aimed at addressing the country’s pressing issues, the upcoming election is expected to be highly competitive.
The NPP, currently in power, is campaigning on it achievements, such as the Free SHS program, while the NDC is as well focusing on offering an alternative vision, aimed to address the economic challenges facing Ghanaians.
A Ghanaian citizen identified as Asmanu Yaya has stated that he will continue to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) because four of his children have benefited from the Free SHS program.
During The Independent Ghana’s vox pop session with citizens to gather views on their voting preferences, Mr. Yaya mentioned that even though the economy is currently struggling, he cannot deny that this same government has relieved parents like him of the burden of paying school fees.
“I will still vote for the NPP because I can testify that Free SHS has benefited four of my children,” Mr. Yaya indicated.
In contrast, Emmanuel, another Ghanaian, expressed a different opinion, stating that he has no reason to vote for any candidate because he has personally not reaped any benefits.
“I don’t see anything for my vote. They will come and deceive us and then go. So this time, I have learned you have to work for yourself because if you don’t work for yourself, they won’t give you food,” the young man indicated.
Speaking to another young lady named Tiwa, she mentioned that she plans to vote in December 2024.
Tiwa believes that she needs to exercise her right as a citizen.
“I will vote because it is my right to vote as a citizen,” Tiwa stated confidently.
US-based vlogger and journalist, Kevin Taylor, has poked fun at the Western Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Ndede Siah, following the launch of the ruling party’s manifesto.
While addressing the party faithful at the launch of the manifesto on Sunday, Mr Francis Ndede Siah, said that the 2024 manifesto document of the party contains measures to achieve progress and economic growth.
“The manifesto provides innovative ways to achieve progress,” he said in his welcoming address during the manifesto launch.
He added, “Today will go down in history as the day NPP laid the foundation to break the 8 to secure the future.”
He however made the submission with some difficulty. He mispronounced a few words which caught the attention of Mr Taylor.
According to Mr Taylor, it is unacceptable for NDC members to be mocked for making errors while speaking the English Language.
Mr Taylor in a post on X said, “NPP western region chairman is spitting dirt. These same idiots will say NDC does not read ah ah ah.”

The Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasized that the NPP’s decision to present a detailed account of its achievements before launching its 2024 manifesto reflects the party’s respect for the people of Ghana and its commitment to transparency.
Speaking at the manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia underscored that the NPP has always upheld its obligations to Ghanaians, making accountability a core aspect of its governance.
He pointed out that by taking the time to reflect on the party’s track record, the NPP demonstrates its capability and readiness to deliver more in the future.
“Our tradition, the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition, has not only been the vanguard of the rule of law and governance but also pacesetters and drivers of life-changing policies and interventions,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
The manifesto launch event was marked by various speakers who showcased the NPP’s accomplishments across multiple sectors, particularly those that stemmed from the party’s 2020 manifesto commitments.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted these achievements as a testament to the NPP’s proud legacy and potential to continue delivering impactful policies.
“Let me thank all the earlier presenters for highlighting the major achievements of our government under the leadership of President Nana Akufo-Addo,” Dr. Bawumia said. “We have taken some time to highlight these achievements because our track record is a significant predictor of capability and the potential to do more.”
Dr. Bawumia added that the decision to account for these successes is rooted in the NPP’s belief in fulfilling its social contract with the people.
“We have catalogued them because, in the NPP, we view these as our obligation to the people from whom we draw our mandate. We have enumerated them because they communicate our ability to respond to the numerous needs of different sections of our society.”
He further stressed that the party’s track record serves as proof of its commitment to delivering on its promises. “We have listed them to show that we remain committed to fulfilling the social contract we have with the good people of Ghana.”
Dr. Bawumia assured the public that, given the opportunity, the NPP will continue implementing progressive interventions that build on its current successes.
“Above all, this exercise confirms that hundreds of pledges have been made to the Ghanaian people, and broadly, they have been kept. More impactful and forward-looking interventions will be implemented to move Ghana to the next level of the development journey.”
He also paid tribute to President Akufo-Addo, acknowledging the far-reaching impact of policies such as Free SHS. “We promised change and we have made significant progress.
Mr. President, history will be kind to you, and you shall be remembered for the millions of lives you have touched. We are eternally grateful.”
Through this manifesto, Dr. Bawumia said, the NPP continues to prove its credibility and commitment to the people of Ghana, positioning itself as the party capable of delivering more transformative policies for the country’s future.

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates and party members to intensify their efforts in the upcoming elections, urging them to fight for the party with the same dedication they would show in protecting their loved ones.
Speaking passionately, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the challenges faced by the Akufo-Addo administration due to the slim majority in Parliament, stressing that the narrow margin has made governance difficult. He insisted that the NPP must avoid repeating this situation in a potential Bawumia-led administration.
“Don’t give up, let us work together,” he encouraged. He also praised current NPP parliamentarians for their resilience, saying, “I thank you for your support through your steadfastness and resilience although we have a very tight parliament.”
With the current majority being just one seat, Afenyo-Markin urged his fellow MPs to remain focused and continue to support the government until the end of their term. “Let’s finish hard. There is a price awaiting us,” he added.
Turning his attention to the parliamentary candidates, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of moving beyond internal disputes to focus on winning the elections.
“Enough of the reconciliation. Move on, fight hard, campaign day and night, go to every household. We don’t have time to settle disputes,” he advised. “Fight for this party the way you fight to save a sister, fight for this party the way you save a mother, fight for this party…we need our numbers in Parliament.”
He also expressed confidence in Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to NPP’s flagbearer, defending him against attempts by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to tarnish his image. Afenyo-Markin pointed out that similar tactics were used against President Akufo-Addo, but they were unsuccessful.
“We know you tagged Akufo-Addo also as arrogance but it didn’t work,” Afenyo-Markin remarked.
He expressed confidence that Dr. Prempeh, alongside Dr. Bawumia, would help transform Ghana with the determination and strength necessary for the job.
The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is poised to unveil its 2024 election manifesto today, Sunday, August 18, at the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) in Takoradi.
The launch, scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm, follows a successful health walk held yesterday in Sekondi-Takoradi, drawing thousands of party supporters.
The event, spearheaded by an eleven-member planning committee, is chaired by Madam Oboshie Sai-Coffie with Ms. Abena Asante as the secretary.
According to a statement issued by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on August 5, the committee was tasked with ensuring a successful and impactful launch.
Speaking ahead of the event, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia campaign, emphasized that job creation and business growth will be at the core of the party’s manifesto.
In an interview with Joy News, Aboagye stated that about 90% of the manifesto will focus on expanding the private sector to generate more employment opportunities.
“The NPP is committed to empowering businesses, which will naturally lead to increased job creation,” Aboagye explained. He further noted that the party had already created 2.1 million jobs during its tenure, far outpacing any previous government. “These jobs are sustainable, providing long-term security for Ghanaians,” he said.
As the party looks toward the upcoming election, Aboagye underscored that the choice between former President John Mahama and Dr. Bawumia should be clear for voters, particularly when it comes to the NPP’s proven track record in job creation.
He also acknowledged that while progress has been made, there is still more to be done, particularly in equipping young Ghanaians with the skills needed to thrive in emerging industries like the automotive sector.
Professor Kofi Agyekum, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana’s School of Languages, has questioned the veracity of the claims being made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a recent interview on Peace FM, he expressed frustration over the conflicting statements from the two major parties.
“Looking at Chronicles page 3, the headline reads ‘NPP to Launch Manifesto of Lies – Mahama.’ So, who should we believe?” Professor Agyekum said. “It makes it very difficult for those of us who speak on radio. You don’t know what to say when those leading us and whom we are supposed to trust are accusing each other of lying. So, who is telling the truth?”
John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the NDC, has accused the NPP of spreading falsehoods. Mahama claims that the NPP’s upcoming manifesto launch on August 18 will be full of deceit.
“This is a government full of lies and false promises. On December 18, they will launch a manifesto of lies, promising things they will never deliver,” Mahama stated. He referred to previous broken promises, saying, “They promised one child, one egg, one child, one chocolate—all lies.”
On the other hand, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant and not be swayed by what he describes as the NDC’s tactics and propaganda.
During the inaugural session of the Bawumia Campaign Team’s series, “The Next Chapter,” Aboagye cautioned voters against believing the NDC’s claims, reminding them of past opposition strategies.
A staff member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Legal Directorate, Kingsley Amoakwa-Boadu, has affirmed the party’s support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) proposal to scrap academic fees for all first-year tertiary students.
He acknowledged that any policy aimed at improving access to tertiary education is welcomed by the NPP, as Ghana requires educated minds to drive its development.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Amoakwa-Boadu expressed the NPP’s stance, stating, “For myself and my party, anything that increases access to education is welcomed. For a long period of time, this country has needed educated minds because we have natural resources and all that, and it is that creative and imaginative mind that boosts our developmental agenda. If you don’t have a lot of that, it is problematic.”
While expressing the NPP’s overall support for the policy, he emphasized that their primary concern lies with the practical implementation and financing of the NDC’s proposed initiative.
He questioned how the policy would be executed effectively, noting inconsistencies in the NDC’s communication.
“Our issue is how it is going to be implemented and financed,” Amoakwa-Boadu said.
“The NDC is not speaking from one script. You have someone say this and the other say that. You get someone say it is for all public universities, and what about technical universities?”
John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s flagbearer, announced the plan during the party’s youth manifesto launch in Accra, stating that it aims to alleviate the burden on students struggling with academic fees.
According to Clement Apaak, a member of the NDC’s Manifesto Committee on Education, the policy could cost the government around GH¢300 million annually.
Despite concerns over its feasibility, Amoakwa-Boadu reiterated that the NPP would support any initiative that broadens access to higher education, recognizing the critical role it plays in national progress.
Private legal practitioner, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has joined the numerous Ghanaians who believe that Ghana needs a vibrant third force to eliminate the duopoly of New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to him, it is high time the other political parties with relatively small followings, come together and push forward together.
He believes their single efforts would not be enough to end the duopoly that has plagued Ghana’s political space.
Delivering his take on JoyNews’ Newsfile, monitored by The Independent Ghana, on Saturday, he said, “Yes, we need a third force. I don’t know if that third force in our political space will be Alan Kyerematen’s group, The Movement for Change, morphed into The Alliance of Revolutionary Change. I seem to believe that these small groups of political organisations can make a positive impact if they are able to rally together. The CPP, PNC, PPP, all of them.”
“They should be able to be forward looking and thinking, knowing that the duopoly that has disappointed this country all these years, the NDC and NPP, will not be removed by their single individual efforts but by their collective strength and giving Ghanaians a sense that they can unite behind the goal to develop this country and meaningfully,” he added.
The NPP and the NDC have dominated political power since the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1992.
Although other political parties such as the Convention Peoples Party(CCP), Peoples National Convention (PNC) Prphressive Peoples Party (PPP) and others have participated in elections in the Fourth Republic they have not been able to garner the needed votes to enable them to form a government.
This has led the NPP and NDC to dominate the space at the presidential and parliamentary levels.
Manklalo of the Mafi Traditional Area, Togbe Brentuo Asafo IV, has expressed the need for a third political force in Ghana as well as the Director of Research at theInstitute of Economic Affairs(IEA) Dr John Kwakye.
The National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has been discharged from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) after nearly a month of treatment following a serious accident en route to Kumasi for a party event.
His condition has significantly improved, and he is now on the road to recovery.
In a social media post, Ahiagbah expressed gratitude for the support and prayers he received during his ordeal, stating, “I am out of the hospital today with a few more knots to untie, but I am back on my feet again. Thank God almighty, and thank you all for your prayers and support.”
Ahiagbah also took the time to acknowledge the medical team that played a crucial role in his recovery.
“To the dedicated team led by Dr. Charles K. Dally, the catalyst; Dr. Otu Boateng, the signature man; Dr. Roland Azorliade, the wise one; and Professor Peter Ambe, latter-day addition to the team and the host of nurses, I say God bless you for doctoring and nursing me back onto my feet.”
He expressed his appreciation for the leadership at KATH, specifically recognizing Prof. Addai-Mensah’s role in advancing the hospital’s services.

“To Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), led by the dynamic Prof. Addai-Mensah, I owe a debt of support and advocacy to ensure that KATH continues to improve healthcare outcomes for Ghanaians.”
Reflecting on his time in the hospital, Ahiagbah shared the challenges he faced, describing the experience as both “frightening and painful.”
He added that the ordeal had given him insight into the gaps and potential within Ghana’s healthcare system.
Motivated by his experience, Ahiagbah announced his intention to establish the Turning Point Foundation, aimed at promoting a “people-centered, outcome-driven health policy regime in Ghana.”
Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has urged Ghanaians to place their trust and confidence in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the nation heads toward the December elections.
He emphasized that the NPP, with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the helm, is well-positioned to “break the 8” and secure victory because they have a clear and convincing message.
In contrast, he argued, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has struggled to communicate its key agenda.
“I am very confident because our message is quite clear, and the message of the NDC can’t be seen,” Dame stated.
He pointed out the NDC’s difficulties in explaining their concept of a 24-hour economy, whereas the NPP’s achievements over the past eight years stand as evidence of their capability.
The AG made these remarks following a private meeting with top NPP officials in the Bono Region, including his Deputy, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, Bono Regional Minister Justina Owusu Banahene, regional executives, constituency chairmen, and parliamentary candidates.
The gathering aimed to rally support and activate grassroots efforts for the upcoming elections through door-to-door and street campaigns.
To bolster the party’s activities at the regional and constituency levels, Mr. Dame donated motorbikes and t-shirts to assist in disseminating the NPP’s message across the region.
He stressed that unity is essential for the party’s success and called on members to set aside past internal conflicts over candidate selections.
“We have to be bold in propagating all the achievements that we have chalked over the past eight years and preach all the messages we have for Ghanaians,” Dame said.
He further encouraged NPP members to proudly highlight the government’s accomplishments as they engage voters across the country.
Mr Dame concluded by charging party members to seize the opportunity to demonstrate the government’s work, emphasizing that this will be critical in ensuring that Ghanaians make an informed decision at the polls.
