Stay out of chieftaincy disputes, power is temporary – Otumfuo warns politicians

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has warned government appointees to stay out of chieftaincy matters and refrain from using their political influence.

Speaking at a meeting of the Asanteman Council on Monday, April 20, 2026, Otumfuo expressed strong displeasure over the persistent political interference in traditional disputes, stressing that it is against customary law and undermines the authority of traditional institutions.

“Your government is in power, so you think you can do whatever you please. Know that power is transient. Of course, you can go ahead and use that power for whatever you want now.

“There is a court ruling in favour of Amantimhene, yet someone is exerting his authority as chief, resisting the legitimate chief. The same is taking place in Nkyeraa, which has been adopted as a Divisional Council in the House of Chiefs,” he said.

Last year, Otumfuo admonished the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, to stay within his jurisdiction and stay away from matters that fall under his authority, including chieftaincy and land disputes.

Commissioner of Police (COP) Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, who occupied the position as the Regional Police Commander, has received a promotion following a reshuffle that was carried out in October at the order of the Inspector General of Police.

Taking his place is DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto, who paid a courtesy call at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, November 5. During his visit to the Palace yesterday, the Asantehene charged him to remain within his jurisdiction, avoid interference in land and chieftaincy disputes, and resist intimidation from individuals who might misuse the King’s name.

“I’m sure by now, your predecessor has briefed you about your jurisdiction. Ultimately, peace is what we all seek. In the Ashanti Kingdom, matters relating to land and chieftaincy disputes fall under my authority, not that of the police. If anyone, including a chief, brings such a case to you, simply tell them, ‘Hold on, let me consult the Asantehene. Whatever the case may be, once it reaches my attention, peace shall prevail. If anyone attempts to act arrogantly or remains unyielding, especially in land cases, report it to me; those issues are not part of your mandate”, he noted.

He continued, “However, cases involving theft, robbery, and other social vices fall within your responsibility. Handle them diligently and ensure that peace is maintained throughout our region and kingdom.”

The 1992 Constitution of Ghana affirms that all stool, skin, and family lands are vested in the appropriate stool or skin on behalf of, and in trust for, the subjects of that stool or skin. This gives chiefs a legally recognised role as custodians.

This means that chiefs and other traditional authorities hold land in trust for their people. They cannot treat stool or skin lands as private property.

Asantehene, since his enthronement in 1999, has been the primary arbiter of land conflicts in Asanteman 1999, handling countless cases through traditional structures and reinforcing his authority by warning chiefs against illegal practices like using land guards.

During the new Commander’s visit to the Manhyia Palace, he reiterated his commitment to nipping in the bud the resurgence of land guards, warning dethronement for chiefs who employ the services of landguards.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II fumed at the actions of these land guards, adding that such conduct was against the traditional governance system of Asanteman.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II further called on individuals or chiefs involved in land disputes to seek amicable resolution through proper channels rather than resorting to violence or unauthorised security arrangements.

“I will destool any chief who engages the services of land guards. They know very well that they have no such authority. When those lands were entrusted to them upon their enstoolment, I never instructed them to hire land guards to protect them. I did not grant them the power to employ people to use guns and harm others.

“If you have any land disputes with anyone, bring it before me, and we will resolve it amicably, for peace to prevail,” the Asantehene said.

In July, the Asantehene issued a similar warning, declaring his readiness to destool any chief found harbouring or condoning the illegal activities of land guards within their jurisdictions. The Asantehene’s declaration came during the first Asanteman Council meeting following the culmination of the Silver Jubilee celebrations at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Thursday, July 4, 2024.

Asantehene has built a reputation over the years as a credible arbiter, making him a good candidate to be a part of the mediation team to help resolve the long-standing conflict in Bawku.

During President John Dramani Mahama’s first administration, he named Otumfuo to play a mediating role in the Bawku conflict.

He began the mediation around 2013, but the process was stalled due to the renewed violence and difficulties in securing cooperation from the feuding factions, and the need to reorganise the peace framework.

Mediation efforts began in 2023, but by 2024, the process was paused. During this period, Otumfuo emphasised that he would only continue if both sides were committed to dialogue. In April 2025, Otumfuo resumed mediation at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement in the peace process has been met with widespread approval, with many hopeful that his leadership will play a critical role in restoring peace and stability to the troubled Bawku region.

Colonel Festus Aboagye (Retired), a distinguished security expert, has called for greater support for Otumfuo’s initiative, stressing the importance of embracing multi-track diplomacy to strengthen the peace process.

Colonel Aboagye urged a more inclusive approach to the mediation, calling for the involvement of various national stakeholders such as diaspora leaders, youth advocates, and women’s peacebuilding networks.

He believes that a broader, multi-dimensional strategy will result in a more sustainable and inclusive solution to the conflict.

“Support Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation through multi-track diplomacy, incorporating diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding networks,” he proposed.

He also cautioned that traditional diplomatic efforts alone might not be enough to resolve the deep divisions that have fueled the protracted conflict.

Train your officers in the customs, traditions of the Ghanaian citizenry – Asantehene charges IGP

Overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, has admonished the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Yohunu Tetteh to teach and train his officers in the customs and traditions of members of the society.

Traditional rulers are custodians of land, tradition, and community discipline, while police enforce state laws.

On his part, before policing structures were formed, Ghanaian communities historically relied on strong cultural norms to maintain order, hence the need for police officers to understand these customs to make them not just enforcers of rules, but protectors of people’s way of life.

He made these remarks during a speech delivery at the guard of honour parade organised by the IGP, Christian Yohunu Tetteh, at the fore court Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra on Jan. 6, 2025.

“Therefore, I have come to urge deeper, institutionalised collaboration between traditional authorities and the Ghana Police Service. Let chiefs serve as allies in community policing. Let officers be trained to understand the customs of the people they protect. Let dialogue precede deployment and mediation precede confrontation. This is not softness; it is intelligence. The future of public order lies not in louder force but in stronger values supported by competent, disciplined law enforcement,” he stated.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, highlighted the need for tradition, culture and law to marry to ensure the sustainability of peace and serendipity in our societies.

According to him, a society’s greatest victory of law enforcement is prevention, and these preventions begin in the homes where the conduct of people is shaped.

Culture and tradition, he said, build the foundation of character and discourage wrongdoing before it becomes legally punishable.

“So it should be obvious, therefore, that the alignment of cultural values with the values of law should be the first step towards crime prevention. Our visit today sets us on a journey towards crystallising this alignment of values and sends a powerful national message: tradition and modern law enforcement are not rivals struggling for relevance; they are collaborators safeguarding the same future.

The greatest victory of law enforcement is prevention, and prevention begins long before police sirens sound. It begins in homes, where discipline is taught; in communities, where elders are respected; and in cultures where wrongdoing is socially discouraged before it becomes legally punishable. This is where culture performs its most important work,” highlighting the need for mutual respect between traditional and modern law enforcement agencies.

“When traditional authority respects legal authority, communities stabilise. When the police respect local customs, cooperation deepens. When both communicate openly, crime loses its hiding place,” Otumfuo noted.

Otumfuo continued to highlight the importance of values taught by culture and traditions, stressing that a society with shared values of responsibility and principles upholds and respects the Policeman, treats him as a partner and not an adversary.

“In a society where values are strong, the police officer is not viewed as an adversary but as a partner. The uniform commands respect not because it carries force but because it represents shared principles. Now imagine a society where values have collapsed. In such a place, the police officer becomes a symbol of oppression. The law becomes an external imposition, and crime becomes defiance masquerading as freedom. The difference between the two societies is not the number of laws on the books; it is the presence or absence of culture. If law alone could save society, then countries with the thickest law books would have no problems and no prisons at all. Yet even prisons have rules and still require values. The truth is simple, though uncomfortable: no society can outsource morality entirely to the state and expect peace. Together, we must raise citizens, not just enforce laws,” the Asantehene noted.

At the same event, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) eulogised the Asantehene as the modern-day embodiment of the biblical King Solomon, citing his wisdom and exceptional role in promoting peace and national cohesion.

His praises follows his role in leading the resolution of some long-standing disputes in the country, such as the Otumfuo’s mediation efforts in the Dagbon chieftaincy dispute, as well as interventions in Yendi and the long-standing Bawku conflict, noting that these initiatives have significantly supported police operations and strengthened public confidence in security efforts.

“Your exceptional mediation skills, which have restored peace in numerous conflicts across our nation, compel me to describe you as the King Solomon of our time,” the IGP stated.

According to Mr. Yohuno, Otumfuo’s calm disposition, moral authority and patience have been instrumental in resolving some of the country’s most protracted conflicts, bringing stability where tension once prevailed.

Otumfuo’s mediation role in Bawku conflict resolution efforts

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II submitted his Bawku Peace Mediation Report to President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.

Following the submission of the report, the Mamprusi-installed rival chief, Alhaji Seidu Abagre, from Bawku in the Upper East Region, was removed, the Ministry of Interior confirmed the development in a statement in late December 2025.

According to a statement released by the Ministry, Alhaji Seidu Abagre was removed on on December 24.

“This afternoon, personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) removed Alhaji Seidu Abagre from Bawku, pursuant to the recommendations of the Otumfuo Asantehene Osei Tutu II mediation report regarding the Bawku affair,” the statement read.

The Ministry has assured the public that “Alhaji Seidu Abagre is safe in the care of the security agencies.”

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the factions involved in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute to cease power struggles and work towards lasting peace.

He made the call on Monday, December 1, at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi while speaking to representatives of the Mamprugu and Kusasi.

“Whatever the outcome of the mediation, you will still have to live together as brothers and sisters,” he added. Otumfuo’s engagement with the groups was to find lasting solutions to end the ongoing feud, which resurfaced in 2024 in Bawku, Upper East Region.

The mediation talks began months ago. Bawku, which had remained relatively peaceful for a period, saw conflict erupt once more in late 2024. The resurgence of violence was largely sparked by the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a Mamprusi chief who had been enskinned in 2022, only to be exiled later when his enskinment was ruled illegal.

His return to Bawku followed the withdrawal of an arrest warrant against him by a Kumasi High Court in October 2024, reigniting tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities. The renewed violence has resulted in deadly confrontations, including attacks on both civilians and security forces.

We are collaborators and not rivals seeking relevance – Otumfuo on Ghana Police

Traditional rulers are custodians of land, tradition, and community discipline, while police enforce state law. Sometimes these roles overlap, for example, in land disputes or local conflicts. In Ghana’s history, there have been cases where both chiefs and police have complained that one party has overstepped its mandate.

Consequently, speaking during a historic visit to the Ghana Police headquarters at the guard of honour parade in his honor organized by the Ghana Police service yesterday, Tuesday, January 6, the Asante Overlord, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, highlighted the need for tradition, culture and law to marry to ensure the sustainability of peace and serendipity in our societies.

According to him, a society’s greatest victory of law enforcement is prevention, and these preventions begin in the homes where the conduct of people is shaped.

The truth is simple, though uncomfortable: no society can outsource morality entirely to the state and expect peace. Together, we must raise citizens, not just enforce laws,” the Asantehene noted.

He made some recommendations as to how traditional rulers and law enforcements agencuies can work harmoniously together to ensure continued peace and security in the society. A regard for this recommendations, he highlighted, would be labelled as intelligence and not softness.

Otumfuo’s emphasis on police working together with traditional rulers in maintaining peace comes barely two months after he reiterated the same to the new Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto, when he paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene following his replacement of the former Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe.

During his visit to the Palace yesterday, the Asantehene charged him to remain within his jurisdiction, avoid interference in land and chieftaincy disputes, and resist intimidation from individuals who might misuse the King’s name.

Asantehene to bring Bawku mediation to a close by Dec 1

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to conclude his mediation efforts in the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy conflict on Sunday, November 30, and Monday, December 1.

This information was contained in a statement issued by the Manhyia Palace on Monday, November 10. According to the statement, the Asantehene’s upcoming two-day mediation is a key part of his continuing work to bring the Kusasi and Mamprusi groups in Bawku together and resolve their long-running conflict.

On April 15, Otumfuo formally announced that the critical mediation sessions would take place from April 28 to May 1 at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

However, the sessions were postponed due to the complexity of the dispute in the locality. In June, the Asantehene was expected to meet with the Kusaug as part of ongoing efforts to restore peace in Bawku.

Meanwhile, the community of Binduri in the Upper East Region, along with surrounding districts, has recorded a series of murders in recent times, leaving residents in fear and panic.

The victims were killed by unknown armed men, prompting the police to launch investigations to arrest the perpetrators. In a recent update, the Ghana Police Service has offered a one-million Ghana Cedis reward for information leading to the arrest of Mark Agingre, a native of Binduri who has been labeled the prime suspect in the ongoing killings.

This announcement comes after a man, his wife, and their three children were murdered in Binduri, leaving another child in critical condition. The surviving child is currently receiving treatment at the Bolgatanga Government Hospital.

Earlier, on October 27, an elderly man and his two children were also killed by unknown assailants. Preliminary police investigations have linked these incidents to Mark Agingre.

The police have urged individuals with information on Mark Agingre’s whereabouts to contact 191, 18555, or report to the nearest police station.

Authorities have assured the public that the prime suspect and all others involved in the gruesome murders will be brought to justice. Taking to Facebook on Saturday, November 8, the police wrote, “Suspect Mark Agingre, a native of Binduri, is wanted by the Police for his involvement in a series of brutal murders in the Binduri District and nearby communities in the Upper East Region.

Suspect Agingre is wanted in connection with the murder of a man, his wife, and three children on 7th November 2025, which also left another child in critical condition at the Bolgatanga Government Hospital.”

It added, “He is further suspected of the murder of an elderly man and his two children on 27th October 2025 at Binduri. Preliminary investigations indicate that he may be behind several other targeted killings.

“A reward of One Million Ghana Cedis GH₵1,000,000.00 has been earmarked for anyone who is able to share relevant and credible information that will lead to the arrest of the suspect.

The post concluded, “Anyone with credible information on his whereabouts is urged to contact the nearest police station or call 191, 18555 immediately. The Police assure the public that every effort is being made to track down the suspect and bring him to justice.”

On Sunday, October 26, a shooting incident left three individuals dead and five others injured. Reports indicate that gunmen invaded the victims’ residence and shot them, including a five-year-old child who died instantly.

George Bukari, Manager of Binduri-based Maxx Empire Radio and TV, is reported to have sustained injuries. The incident has been linked to the long-running Bawku conflict, where ethnic tensions have periodically sparked violence, making the area one of the most heavily monitored in northern Ghana.

The government has, in several ways, sought to restore calm. In July, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) deployed soldiers to conflict-prone areas, including Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla.

Four other individuals were killed in a daylight attack at the Garu District Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), which also left several others injured on Monday, October 20.

The deceased included a bystander, an NHIA staff member, a mentally unstable man, and Yahaya Bukari, headmaster of Garu D/A Junior High School.

Eyewitnesses reported that four armed men on two motorbikes fired shots wildly upon arriving at the office.

“Around 10 a.m., we heard gunshots. Initially, we thought it was coming from the rural bank area, but later we found out that the attackers had gone to the health insurance office,” a witness stated. Edward Ndebugri, former Presiding Member of the Garu District Assembly and current Assembly Member for Kugri, recounted that the gunmen targeted bystanders and fleeing residents.

“There is a public school close to the health insurance office, and when the shooting started, the teachers and pupils began running helter-skelter. The gunmen chased them, and when one of the teachers fell, they shot him dead,” he added.

The assailants reportedly left the NHIA office with nothing. In response, heavily armed police and military personnel patrolled key areas, including the District Health Insurance Office and the Presbyterian Hospital.

“The whole town is in shock. This is the first time we are witnessing such an incident. People are living in fear, and we are pleading with the security agencies to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the Assembly Member for Kugri appealed.

In April, the Ghana Police Service directed all regional commands to implement immediate protective measures for police officers and their families in the Upper East Region, particularly in Bawku, Pusiga, and Sindi.

The directive followed intelligence suggesting that unknown operatives, potentially linked to names such as “King Doormathin” and “Nectwart Ermonnel,” may be targeting police officers and their relatives.

“Recent developments suggest that police officers and their families, whether indigenous or non-indigenous, have become potential targets,” the internal message stated.

It instructed that all movements in these communities must be carried out under armored escort and warned that strict compliance is non-negotiable.

Although the identities and motives of the suspected individuals remain unclear, security analysts are actively investigating potential links to escalating unrest. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

“We’re working to ensure safety in these communities, but cooperation from the public is vital,” a senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Independent Ghana.

“What at all do you seek?” – Asantehene fumes over Bantamahene’s involvement in multiple disputes

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed disappointment in Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI, for being involved in multiple conflicts that have disrupted peace in some communities.

Reports indicate that the Asantehene’s frustration is linked to a committee’s findings on the Adanwomase dispute over the community’s deity, which implicated Bantamahene.

During a meeting at the Kumasi Traditional Council, Bantamahene was fined eight rams for disobeying the Asantehene’s orders regarding the case. He was required to pay two of the rams immediately.

The Asantehene also listed several other disputes the chief had been involved in and questioned his motives for stirring tensions.

In rebuking the Bantamahene’s behavior, the Asantehene sternly quizzed “What at all do you seek?”

The Asantehene is reportedly troubled by Bantamahene’s actions, which he believes are disrupting peace and stability in the region.

Many see the Asantehene’s remarks as a warning, urging Bantamahene to reconsider his actions and the impact they have on the community.

Traditional Council of Techiman responds to convoy attack allegations

Techiman Traditional Council has reacted to news trending on social media on an alleged attack on the convoy of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during his recent visit to the Bono East Region.

According to a report by MyJoyOnline, the Techiman Traditional Council has clarified that there is no conflict between the people of Techiman and the Ashantis.

This statement comes after an incident on December 2, 2024, when unidentified youth reportedly threw stones at vehicles in the Asantehene’s convoy as it returned to Kumasi after a funeral in Nkoranza.

The preliminary police reports indicated that some buses in the convoy were targeted. Despite this, the Council dismissed claims of hostility, emphasising the close ties between the Asantehene and the Techimanhene, who both belong to the Oyoko Clan and share a history of mutual respect and cooperation.

The Council also addressed allegations that Otumfuo’s security guards had fired shots and mistreated civilians in Techiman. They suggested that these accusations may have caused misunderstandings, provoking the youth to react.

They added that unverified social media reports exacerbated tensions in the community.

“Chieftaincy is a revered institution that must be respected at all times,” the Council stated.

The Council urged people to use social media responsibly, warning against spreading false information or insulting traditional leaders online. They highlighted the importance of avoiding content that could fuel tensions or mislead the public.

Thanks to the quick response from security personnel, the situation was brought under control, and those injured received medical care at the Holy Family Teaching Hospital.

Reaffirming its dedication to maintaining peace, the Council emphasised that Techiman is a diverse and inclusive town that welcomes people from all walks of life. They called on the public to avoid any actions or remarks that might disrupt the harmony in the community.

2024 polls: Don’t pay attention to divisive and false prophecies, choose peace – Otumfuo

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has advised Ghanaians to disregard false prophecies that could jeopardise the nation’s peace and stability ahead of the December 2024 elections.

Delivering the Asantehene’s message at the annual prayer gathering on November 29, the Chief of Sewua, Nana Kwaku Amankwa Sarkodie, called on religious leaders to focus on fostering national unity rather than making predictions that could incite tension or chaos.

He further stressed the importance of vigilance in safeguarding the country’s peace, particularly during the election period.

“Ghanaians must focus on what unites us and ignore divisive and false prophecies,” he stated.

The Asantehene’s message comes as a timely reminder of the role of both citizens and religious leaders in maintaining a stable and harmonious environment during this critical period in the nation’s history.

“We will be going to the polls very soon. Otumfuo said I should tell you some individuals are engaging in false prophecies.

Some claim to be making prophecies to favour the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while others also make prophecies to favour the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“They have all forgotten that they have people among their followers who belong to different political parties and also hold different views,” Nana Kwaku Amankwa Sarkodie said.

The annual prayer gathering also featured intercessory prayers for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party.

Meanwhile, schoolchildren in Kumasi took to the streets to advocate for peace, emphasising the importance of unity during the electoral period.

These calls for peace have gained momentum following the signing of a peace pact by political parties, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring a peaceful election.

28 artefacts looted during Sagrenti War finally repatriated to Ghana

On Saturday, November 23, 2024, twenty-eight artefacts looted during the Sagrenti War were returned to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in a ceremonial event at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

This occasion coincided with the 100th anniversary of King Prempeh I’s return from exile in Seychelles, marking a significant milestone in the Ashanti Kingdom’s history.

The artefacts, which include gold jewellery, ceremonial swords, treasury padlocks, and other regalia, were taken by British forces during the war.

Over the years, they came into the possession of a West African art collector in 1922. AngloGold Ashanti, the mining company, later acquired the items in 2000 and, following negotiations with the Manhyia Palace, facilitated their return.

Stewart Bailey, the Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Director of AngloGold Ashanti, praised the company’s role in ensuring the artefacts’ return.

He highlighted the collaborative effort that made the repatriation possible and expressed gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan, and other dignitaries present.

“This return is a testament to what unity and partnership can achieve in preserving and honouring cultural legacies,” Bailey remarked.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II acknowledged the importance of the return, describing it as a significant step in healing the wounds of history.

He expressed his gratitude for the gesture, which he believes contributes to restoring the dignity of the Ashanti Kingdom.

The Sagrenti War, also known as the Yaa Asantewaa War, marked a key moment in the Ashanti Kingdom’s resistance against British colonial forces, led by Nana Yaa Asantewaa, Queen Mother of Ejisu.

Following the war, King Prempeh I was exiled, and many cultural artefacts were taken by the British.

The repatriated artefacts will be displayed at the Manhyia Palace Museum, offering the public a chance to engage with these important cultural treasures.

The return is part of a wider commemoration of King Prempeh I’s return, which includes a grand durbar and a symposium on his lasting legacy.

Afia Pokua criticized for disparaging remarks about Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

Journalist at Agoo TV Okwahuman Afia Pokua, has has been significantly criticized over her remarks about Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, which many have perceived as disrespectful.

Addressing the conflict between Otumfuo and the Dormaahene, Afia Pokua criticized the Asantehene for allegedly remaining silent while his subjects engage in disputes and show disrespect to other tribes, including the Bonos.

During her appearance on Onua FM’s ‘Bribi Gye Gye wo’ with Mona Gucci, she voiced her frustration, accusing Ashantis of considering themselves superior to other tribes.

Afia Pokua called for the Ashantis to adopt a more humble attitude and urged the Asantehene to take action on these matters.

She remarked, “Ashantis are behaving as though other tribes in Ghana are not human. This has been evident since we were young. Is the Asantehene saying he hasn’t heard what’s happening? If he can’t hear, he surely has people who do.”

Madam Pokua also took issue with the Asantehene for his promptness in punishing individuals, including prominent politicians, yet not addressing the disrespect directed at other tribes.

She noted that while the Asantehene had previously acted against figures such as Odike and Chairman Wontumi for their disrespect, he has remained silent on these wider concerns.

Furthermore, she expressed concerns about Otumfuo’s swift resolution of conflicts between political parties like the NDC and NPP, contrasting this with his lack of action on his ongoing dispute with the Dormaahene.

Afia Pokua questioned, “If it were an NDC-NPP conflict, he would have intervened, but on this matter, he has been silent.”

She continued, “When a chief dies, their funeral is held within a week. The same would apply to Otumfuo’s funeral; it wouldn’t differ at all, it won’t last 40 days but just a week.”

Her remarks have sparked a strong backlash from Ashantis on social media, including prominent personalities such as Kwaku Manu and Afia Schwarzenegger, who have criticized her intensely.

They have targeted Afia Pokua and also criticized TV host Mona Gucci for permitting such disparaging comments about their king to be broadcast.

  • Galamsey: State of River Pra embarrassing, we have to fight this – Otumfuo

Galamsey: State of River Pra embarrassing, we have to fight this – Otumfuo

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has condemned the severe pollution of River Pra as “embarrassing” and is calling for urgent action to address the environmental damage inflicted by illegal mining, known locally as “galamsey.”

Sharing his personal experience, Otumfuo recounted a recent trip to Cape Coast, during which he stopped at the River Pra. He described the condition of the river as deeply troubling.

“In fact, on my way to Cape Coast, I stopped at the River Pra. I’m afraid I have to tell you that what I saw there was so embarrassing. As a nation, how can we allow this to happen to us? I don’t know, but we have to fight this—no matter what,” he reiterated.

The Asantehene also questioned why individuals responsible for poisoning water bodies with harmful chemicals, such as mercury, are allowed to go unpunished.

“As I see it, if an individual poisons the water source of a community, they are liable for the consequences under the law. What does the law do when one pours mercury into the same water supply, knowing fully well it can kill?” he asked.

Otumfuo’s remarks reflect growing concerns over the devastation caused by illegal mining and highlight the need for immediate action to protect Ghana’s natural resources.

However he has commended the President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Yaw Acheampong Boafo, for his strong stance against illegal mining, also known as “galamsey,” during the opening ceremony of the GBA’s annual conference in Kumasi.

Addressing members of the Bar at a dinner held at the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo expressed his deep concern about the severe pollution of the River Pra, which he witnessed firsthand. He described the situation as “embarrassing” and called for urgent action to combat the destructive effects of illegal mining on the environment.

“I want to congratulate your president on his courageous statement on galamsey this morning at KNUST. Galamsey is an environmental enemy to this nation. What could be more serious for any people than to have their entire water supply at risk?” the Asantehene remarked.

Otumfuo urged the GBA to make time during its five-day conference to set up a panel that would visit communities most affected by illegal mining. He believes such a tour would help the association understand the full scale of the crisis and facilitate discussions on how the law should respond.

“I think as lawyers, you should find space in this five-day conference to set up a panel and take a quick tour of the communities where galamsey is most prevalent. See the extent of the crisis we face, and hopefully, you will deliberate on how the law should respond,” he said.

Free SHS programme is the most audacious social intervention in the 4th Republic – Otumfuo

The Overlord of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has hailed President Akufo-Addo’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy as the most ambitious social intervention of the Fourth Republic.

The Asantehene made these remarks during a special ceremony at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), where he was awarded an honorary doctorate for his contributions to national development and peace.

Speaking at the event, Otumfuo praised the government for implementing a policy that, in his words, was “beyond the capacity of the state” during the post-independence era.

“There is no doubt that the Free SHS policy is the most audacious social intervention in our Fourth Republic,” he said, adding that previous reforms had not ventured into making secondary education accessible to all.

“The decision to take the plan has been ambitious, and it is no wonder it has kept education at the top of national discourse.”

Introduced in 2017, the Free SHS policy aims to remove financial barriers to education for all Ghanaian students. Since its launch, more than 1.6 million students have benefitted from the programme.

Despite its impact, calls have been made for a review of the policy to address concerns over quality, infrastructure, and its strain on the national budget.

As economic pressures mount, discussions continue on how to refine the policy while maintaining its core objectives.

    Dormaahene ’stings’ Otumfuo again

The Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyeman II has jabbed the Asante Overlord and King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over his remarks on the Takyiman Hene.

In a tweet shared by X (formerly Twitter) user @eddie_wrt, the Dormaa Hene is captured fuming over Otumfuo, addressing a paramount chief like the Takyiman Hene as his younger brother and

“Previously, there were rumors suggesting that the Techiman Chief had distanced himself from the violent and uncouth actions of others. Now, let me ask you—when you accuse people of engaging in dubious activities, wouldn’t you consider that an insult?

How can you claim that a great chief like the Techiman Hene, who presides over all of us, is your younger brother? Explain to me how he could be your younger brother.

By implying that the Techiman Hene has separated himself from these uncultured acts, you’re essentially suggesting that some of us are still involved in such behavior” he asserted.

Considering the status of the Takyiman Hene, the Dormaahene advised a retraction of statement by the Asantehene.

“He repeated that statement three times, and the crowd cheered in agreement, but it should never be said again. When have I, as a king, ever made such remarks? Those comments must be retracted immediately” he added.

Among the many things he criticised Otumfuo a major remarks he found offensive labelling it as a direct attack on him by the Asantehene is the fact that , he was classified as a silly person, who is overconfident and a show off.

“”When have I, as a king, ever made such remarks? Those comments must be retracted. He also mentioned that some of us are merely showoffs, full of overconfidence.

What Otumfuo criticized me for was questioning the type of foolish acts I was supposedly engaged in. Tell me, are such comments meant to be downplayed or taken lightly? He is hiding behind customs and traditions to take undue advantage” he said.

Video: Asantehene destools three chiefs over alleged involvement ‘galamsey’

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has taken decisive action against illegal mining, or ‘galamsey,’ by destooling three chiefs from Sabronum.

The Gyaasehene, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene were all removed from their positions during the Asanteman Council meeting on August 26, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace.

This bold move followed an investigation by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), which confirmed the chiefs’ involvement in galamsey activities, a practice that has severely damaged the environment and threatened the health and livelihoods of the people in the Ashanti Region.

The Asantehene’s decision to strip the chiefs of their titles was prompted by a petition from concerned residents of Sabronum, who sought to put an end to the destructive mining activities in their area.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during the council meeting, reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the environment and protecting the people of the Ashanti Region from the adverse effects of illegal mining.

He made it clear that any actions endangering the well-being of his subjects would not be tolerated within the Asante Kingdom.

In the wake of the destoolment, a new leader has been appointed for Sabronum. Kofi Asante has been selected as the new Sabronum Manhene, signalling a fresh start for the community.

The hope is that this change in leadership will help steer Sabronum away from the challenges posed by galamsey and towards a more sustainable future.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s firm stance on illegal mining has elicited a range of reactions. While many have lauded his decision as a necessary step to combat galamsey, some have expressed concern about the impact on the families of the destooled chiefs.

Nonetheless, the Asantehene’s actions underscore his unwavering resolve to preserve the integrity of the Asante Kingdom and ensure the safety and prosperity of its people.

Video: “He can’t even wrap the cloth” – Otumfuo ridicules son during Akwasidae

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, received homage from his subjects and visitors from far and wide during the sacred festival On Sunday, June 24, 2024, .

The event, which took place at the Manhyia Palace, marked the fifth Akwasidae of the year and featured a moment of humor, initiated by the Asantehene himself, much to the amusement of his courtiers and guests.

The light-hearted incident occurred when Lady Julia Osei Tutu, the Asantehene’s wife, led the royal family’s nuclear members to pay their respects.

As Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie, the king’s son, approached to greet his father, some courtiers stepped in to help him adjust his cloth according to custom. Traditionally, a male approaching the king must lower the cloth draped over his shoulder as a sign of respect.

Watching the prince already struggling, being whipped up by the courtiers, His Majesty could not help but retort with a comment: “Na ntoma yi wɔn hunu fira mo san akɔworɔ aka ho…” translated as “He is already struggling with wearing the cloth, and you want to take it off again?”

The king’s clearly humorous attempt had the desired effect, instantly drawing laughter from everyone present, including Nana Kyeretwie’s sister, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem. Seizing the moment, the royal courtiers persisted, giving the young prince a lesson on the proper way to wear a cloth before he finally greeted the king.

In another display of culture and family history, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem presented herself to her father, wearing a kente outfit that her mother, HRH Lady Julia Osei Tutu, had worn over two decades ago.

Adinkra Pie CEO has professed love to my 16-year-old daughter – Woman alleges

A businessman and Ashanti royal with connections to the Manhyia Palace, Barima Osei Mensah, has been implicated in allegations of proposing love to a 16-year-old girl at his project site in Abuakwa, Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region.

Per reports the distraught mother of the girl, whose identity remains confidential, urged Barima Osei Mensah to keep away from her daughter.

The Adinkra Pie CEO, who reportedly boasts about being the next Asantehene after Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, warned the mother not to speak his name disrespectfully, citing his direct ties to the Manhyia Palace.

Barima Osei Mensah, who has ten children with ten different women, has faced accusations from some of these women for neglecting his paternal responsibilities.

In this particular case, the mother of the 16-year-old girl, who attends a school in Kumasi, insists that she only wants the royal to stay away from her daughter.

“I sell at site Barima Osei Mensah Adinkra’s work site. I sell banku there. One of my daughters is in school and she came. She is the eldest so I go with her to sell at his site. So my daughter told me the man who is the boss here using this particular car says he loves me and wants us to date.” the mother cried.

“So I asked my little girl again what exactly he Adinkra said. She said ‘he says he loves me and I should do my mind well and allow him to date me and do to me whatever he wants’. So I told my daughter when you meet him again and he repeats it tell him that I, Yaa, I said he should never say that to you again. He kept approaching her and my daughter will cry and come to me” the mother sadly narrated.

“If you see him, please tell him my little girl whom he proposed to at site he should stop that. She is a little girl he should not do that. He has approached my daughter three times. I sell at his site. I respect him and all I do when I see him is to greet him. I know him very well… He warned me he is from the Palace so they don’t mention his name by heart.

“My daughter is now afraid. When she sees his car approaching she gets afraid something

It remains unclear whether the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Ashanti royal family are aware of these alleged actions by individuals associated with the palace.

Reports indicate that Barima Osei Mensah is also involved in a legal dispute with his ex-wife, who accuses him of extortion and blackmail.

Child’s Right International Ghana, the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the Paediatric Society of Ghana (PSG) are expected to be petitioned to investigate the matter.

Publicly displaying Freemason attire at events is unfitting for your status – Blakk Rasta tells Otumfuo

Musician and media personality Blakk Rasta has criticized Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the king of the Ashanti Kingdom, for publicly wearing a Freemason suit. He contends that such attire is inappropriate for the king’s status and role, arguing that Otumfuo should adhere to traditional dress to maintain the kingdom’s reputation.

Blakk Rasta believes that, despite the Asantehene’s long-standing membership in the Freemasons, it is more suitable for him to wear traditional attire while letting other members don Freemason suits.

He suggested that Otumfuo’s advisors should counsel him against wearing non-traditional attire at public events.

“Why should you dress in a suit, let alone a Freemason suit? You being the king of the Ashanti kingdom is not a joke. Freemasonry is a powerful ancient entity. Do we know what it means to say you would dress in a Freemason suit? I think it’s a disgrace,” Blakk Rasta said during the UrbanBlend show on 3FM.

His comments followed Otumfuo’s revelation that he had been a Freemason for 25 years, coinciding with his tenure on the Golden Stool.

On May 25, 2024, Freemasons from across Ghana and beyond gathered to honor Otumfuo’s 25th anniversary as Asantehene and his membership in the fraternity.

During the event, Otumfuo, known in the Grand Lodge as Most Worshipful Bro Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, reflected on his association with Freemasonry.

“Twenty-five years ago, my initiation into Freemasonry took place. Joining any society or club naturally leads one to contemplate the potential benefits or limitations,” he stated.

Freemasonry, with its roots in the stonemason guilds of the 16th and 17th centuries, is known for its rituals, symbols, and emphasis on moral and ethical teachings.

Despite facing criticisms and suspicions regarding its secrecy and influence, supporters argue that it promotes personal development, ethical behavior, and charitable work.

My wife is understanding and a great pillar to me – Otumfuo

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, attests to the saying that behind every successful man stands a strong and wise woman.

He elaborated in an interview on how his queen, Lady Julia, has been instrumental in his reign as a monarch.

During the commemoration of his 20-year reign on the Golden Stool, the Asantehene, in an exclusive interview with Graphic Online, delineated the sacrifices and roles his queen, Lady Julia, undertook to ensure his success.

Despite the weighty responsibilities of his position as occupant of the Golden Stool, which limit his time with his family, Lady Julia remains steadfastly supportive, serving as an extraordinary pillar to him, as stated by the Asantehene himself.

“My wife is an extraordinary pillar. Being Asantehene is demanding, and you need to have a wife who understands you,” remarked the Asantehene.

He further noted, “The only day that I have some time to attend to my family is Saturday, but even then, people sometimes come to my residence for various reasons.”

Lady Julia is actively involved in ceremonial duties as the wife of the Asantehene and spearheads several projects initiated by the Manhyia Palace. Among these endeavors are:

    Serwaa Ampem Foundation:
Lady Julia leads the Serwaa Ampem Foundation, a non-governmental organization named after Otumfuo’s late mother, the late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II. The foundation focuses on children infected with HIV/AIDS and family planning. It operates under the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Charity Foundation (OOCTF), where Lady Julia chairs the Board of Trustees.

Otumfuo Mobile Dental Project and Serwaa Ampem Orphanage of Wheels:
Under Lady Julia’s guidance, the Serwaa Ampem Foundation has established the Otumfuo Mobile Dental Project and the Serwaa Ampem Orphanage of Wheels. These initiatives provide vehicles to transport health professionals to villages for dental services for the local populace and orphans, all at no cost. According to recent reports, over 150,000 children and young people have benefited from these initiatives.

    Advocacy for disease prevention programs:
Lady Julia actively advocates for healthcare promotion, particularly in disease prevention programs such as HIV, tuberculosis, immunization, and malaria. She collaborates with organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank, and the Ghana Health Service to pioneer work in Mother-to-Child Prevention of HIV. This includes sensitization workshops for 560 traditional leaders and community durbars in the Ashanti and former Brong Ahafo Regions.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II pursues permanent repatriation of Asante treasures from British Museum

After securing a three-year loan agreement for ancestral golden treasures from the British Museum and the V&A, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, aims to make this temporary repatriation a permanent arrangement, as reported by the UK Telegraph.

The move is driven by the hope for future changes in British laws, which currently prevent museums from permanently returning artifacts abroad. These items, part of the royal regalia taken during the 19th century by British forces, were ceremoniously handed over in Kumasi, the seat of Asanteman, on May 1.

Despite the British Conservative Party’s stance against such changes, the Labour Party is seen as a potential advocate for the legal amendments required for the Asante gold to remain in Ghana.

While officially still the property of the British institutions, the Manhyia Palace and the Asantehene remain optimistic that the loan period might extend long enough for legal reforms to occur, allowing the artifacts to stay.

Ivor Agyeman-Duah, a writer, academic, and director of the Asante king’s museum within the Manhyia Palace, voiced the community’s desire for the artifacts’ permanent return, emphasizing their spiritual significance and the need for retention by Otumfuo.

This loan agreement marks the initial step in a broader plan to repatriate more Asante materials from the V&A and British Museum. Tristram Hunt, the V&A director and former Labour MP, supports reforming the British Museum Act 1963 and the National Heritage Act 1983, which currently restrict repatriation efforts.

The Asantehene, occupying the Golden Stool, wields considerable influence and has been actively involved in reclaiming the regalia since May 2023, ahead of the 150th anniversary of their seizure.

While the British Museum has hinted at “future projects” with the Asante, the current UK government maintains its position against altering the laws governing national museum collections.

This standoff has impacted various repatriation efforts, including those for the Benin Bronzes, Ethiopian sacred tablets, and the Elgin Marbles. Despite some UK politicians, including Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, reportedly showing openness to returning the Elgin Marbles, the party has yet to formalize a policy on the matter.

Sweets! – Beautiful Otumfuo’s wife recounts how she met Asantehene

Wife of the Otumfou Osei Tutu II, Lady Julia, has shared the story of how they met twenty-two years ago.

She shared that their first encounter took place when she was serving as the legal and corporate officer at Ecobank, and was assigned the responsibility of delivering the vote of thanks at the inauguration of the bank’s first branch.

“Otumfuo and I first met when I came to Kumasi as the legal and cooperate officer of Ecobank Ghana and I was asked to give the vote of thanks for the opening of the first branch,” Lady Julia began the tale of her love story during the thanksgiving service at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Cathedral in Fante New Town, Kumasi, in commemoration of his 74th birthday.

According to her, Otumfuo invited her over for a royal dinner that evening after the event.

That was after he had strived to find out everything he needed to know about her.

She jokingly teased her husband about how he refused to leave the event even when it was raining. Efforts by his courtiers to get him home proved futile as he waited to round up information about his future ‘Queen Julia’.

“He tells me he was mesmerised. But at the end of the ceremony, even though it had started to rain, he refused to leave, despite the prompting of his courtiers. He made sure he found out about who I was and how to get in touch with me before leaving the event ground.

The evening, I was summoned by my managing director, the late John Akah, to dinner at Otumfuo’s residence. Little did I know that I was auditioning for the role of a lifetime. And here we are, 22 wonderful years later, with many beautiful children , grandchildren, nieces, nephews and an amazing extended family together, including Nananom and Nana Hemaa,” she added.

Addressing her husband romantically, she said, Sweets, this year together has been truly exceptional and I continue to pinch myself daily to remind myself that this life is not a dream but indeed the wonderful life you promised me when we first met.

My mother left my father because he was a womanizer – Asantehene

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at his 74th birthday Thanksgiving celebration on Monday, May 6, disclosed that his mother left his father due to his father’s unrepentant womanizing behaviour.

He revealed that his mother had considered leaving his father even before his birth, but his uncle persuaded her to stay until she had a special son.

The Asantehene shared that when he was born, his mother did not introduce him to royalty; instead, his uncle took him out of the palace to live with a relative for training. Until recently, he believed this relative was his older brother.

“My mother wanted to leave my father even before I was born because he was a womanizer, but my uncle insisted on her staying because he needed something special. After giving birth to me, my mother insisted on leaving and it was okayed by her family. When I was born, my Uncle ensured that I left the Palace and stayed with a relative. Until recently, I thought this relative was my big brother.”

“My mother used to visit us just like she was visiting her brother and nothing else. Sometimes, the King of the Ashanti Kingdom came to visit us and I will be serving him but I didn’t know I was royalty. Even when I got admission to Prempeh College, I wasn’t allowed to go. Rather, I was taken to Sefwi. My Osae told me there was a disciplinarian in Sefwi so they took me there until I finished Secondary School.”

He mentioned that even when he had to attend tertiary education, he was placed under the care of relatives who could supervise and guide him.

He emphasized that his uncle recognized his potential and made sure he lived up to expectations.

My sense of judgment has never been influenced by money – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

During his 74th birthday thanksgiving service in Kumasi as part of the festivities marking his 25th anniversary celebrations, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, reaffirmed the oath he took 25 years ago before the Asanteman Council in church.

Expressing gratitude in church, Otumfuo praised God for safeguarding his life and his family since his enstoolment as the overlord of the revered Ashanti Kingdom a quarter-century ago.

“In the last 25 years, I have gone through a lot in the country. A lot has been said about me, but I was not worried about anything they said because my focus has always been on speaking the truth to promote fairness in the country. I have always been thankful to God for bestowing wisdom on me for fair judgment in any case that came before me for a peaceful resolution.

“It has always been my prayer before God that I may not discriminate against any individual across the country. I pray for God’s wisdom that comes with integrity and fairness to promote national peace and co-existence in all my dealings with people in the interest of Asanteman and Ghana.

“At where the Lord has placed me, the golden stool takes care of me, so I don’t need your money before I can make a reasonable, fair judgment before handling issues under my control to promote peace and unity. No known individual in my 25-year reign as the Asantehene can dare say I have taken money from them before passing judgment in their favor on any dispute brought before me. No one in the world can say that against me; you can’t dare come before me to bribe me for that. I’m saying all this to the glory of God,” he said.

“I’m saying all this to seek more years and blessings from God to lead me to do more for Asanteman and Ghana in general in the years ahead of me. All that I’m praying for is wisdom, a sense of bravery, and the spirit of what I can do for God,” he added.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged Ghanaians to unite in safeguarding the nation’s peace and unity for its progress.

“I will do my part through God, who strengthens me. It therefore behooves you to unite to play your part as well. I would like to use this opportunity to thank each one of you here who came to support me in this Thanksgiving service. Your presence here demonstrates your love and commitment to me.

“I’m reiterating the Asante oath that I took 25 years ago, and I continue to be honest, truthful, and just to you all at all times. I thank you all,” he said.

The service was attended by dignitaries including Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Asante Mamponhene, Asante Juaben Manhene Dasebere Otuo Serebour (who also serves as the Council of State Chairman), Alan Kyerematen, leader and founder of Movement for Change, Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah, and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, among others.

Manhyia Palace Museum to reopen on May 1

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, recently inspected the royal Ashanti treasures that were delivered to Manhyia Palace by the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

This significant event coincides with the reopening of the Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi on May 1, 2024, as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The museum will unveil its refurbished facilities and showcase historic Asante heirlooms to the public in its new homecoming exhibition.

Among the treasures to be displayed are items looted during the Sagrenti War, which have been returned on loan after being restored.

This unveiling ceremony marks a pivotal moment in the cultural heritage of the Asante Kingdom. It follows a landmark agreement with British institutions, which have sent 32 royal treasures plundered from the Asante Kingdom 150 years ago.

These artifacts, comprising 15 items from the British Museum and 17 from the Victoria and Albert Museum, will be on loan at the Manhyia Palace Museum for three years.

In February 2024, the Fowler Museum at the University of California, Los Angeles repatriated seven artifacts, further commemorating initiatives under the leadership of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

These items were looted by British military forces during the 19th century Anglo-Ashanti Wars and are now returning to their homeland for the first time in 150 years.

The collection includes notable pieces such as the sword of state known as Mpomponsuo and the gold badges of officials authorized to purify the king’s soul.

Also featured is a gold lute-harp presented by Asantehene Osei Bonsu to British diplomat Thomas Edward Bowdich during an 1817 trade treaty.

Director of the Manhyia Palace Museum, Ivor Agyeman-Duah, highlighted the significance of these agreements in renewing connections between the Asante Kingdom, Britain, and the United States.

He emphasized the spirit of progress and cooperation underlying these partnerships and expressed hopes for further dialogues and stronger relationships with all custodians of Asante treasures.

“These partnerships go beyond the Asante Kingdom,” he explained, referencing ongoing international movements to repatriate cultural artefacts to their rightful origins.

“50 years since Asantehene Otumfuo Opoku Ware II first requested the return of the items from the British Museum in 1974, Homecoming renews our connections to Britain and the United States, in the spirit of progress and cooperation.”

Agyeman-Duah continued: “Although the British Museum’s laws forbid the permanent removal of objects, thanks to the mutually beneficial cooperation between Otumfuo Opoku Ware II and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the British Museum and V&A, items removed 150 years ago are home from three museums. We now look forward to more dialogues and stronger relationships with all custodians of Asante treasures.”

The museum, originally opened during the Silver Jubilee of Otumfuo Opoku Ware II in 1995, has been expanded to offer visitors an immersive experience.

Through photographic and regalia displays, lifelike mannequins, and captivating narratives, visitors can explore the rich legacy of the Asante kingdom, including its complex history with the British Empire.

  • Reason why the Asantehene is hailed as ‘King Solomon’

Reason why the Asantehene is hailed as ‘King Solomon’

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the revered Asantehene, has been celebrated for his Solomon-like wisdom, particularly in resolving complex disputes. His judicious approach has not only brought peace to Asanteman but also influenced other kingdoms within Ghana.

The moniker ‘King Solomon’ was bestowed upon him by his appointees and admirers shortly after his enthronement in April 1999. He succeeded Opoku Ware II and faced numerous challenges, especially in land and chieftaincy disputes.

His adept handling of these issues, marked by speed, skill, and fairness, earned him this esteemed title.

Baffour Osei Hyeaman Brantuo VI, Otumfuo’s Manwerehene, highlighted the critical role of Osei Tutu II in restoring order to the chieftaincy institution.

“There were so many cases littered in courts, and our customary laws were not being followed rigidly in the determination of cases. So, he had to meet with the established system, the courts, and asked them to stay off and try and bring all cases that had customary and traditional leanings to be handled before him and his courts… Fortunately, most of the people obliged and that was to set the pace to get all these things in order,” he explained in a documentary commemorating the Silver Jubilee of the Otumfuo.

Dr. Sir Kwame Donkoh Fordwor, a former President of the African Development Bank, attested to the Asantehene’s astuteness: “He is very smart when you are talking, the very time you start, he knows where you are going to end.”

On his 25th anniversary as Asantehene, the state broadcaster GBC showcased his local and global impact in a feature titled: “Otumfuo Osei Tutu II: Celebrating 25 Years of Local and Global Impact.” The program featured testimonials from a host of high-profile figures who spoke of Nana Asantehene’s significant influence both within Ghana and internationally.

Asantehene laments inadequate staff-to-student ratio at KNUST; calls for better conditions

Asantehene and chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has bemoaned what he says is “unfavourable” staff-to-student ratio at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

He says the current staff strength of 1,190 faculty to 85,000 students is woefully inadequate and takes a toll on effective teaching and learning.

Speaking at the 57th special congregation of the university, Otumfuo asked the government for clearance to recruit more staff.

“Unfavourable unfavourable staff-to-student ratio has been a challenge to the university’s aspiration to run to its full extent. With the implementation of the strategic objectives of the university, leading among others to the establishment of the Obuasi campus, the operation of distance learning programmes across the country and the mentoring of over 70 nursing and midwifery institutions, the current staff strength of 1,190 faculty with a correspondent student population of over 85,000 is woefully inadequate to effectively support the academic activities of the university.

“I’m informed that the government has approved some quotas for some universities. It is my ardent wish that, KNUST will be placed in a special category and prioritised considering the pivotal role the university plays in the developmental agenda of the nation,” he said.

Following up on the recommendations of Mr. Joe Anokye, the CEO of the National Communication Authority at the R. P. Baffuor Memorial Lecture 2023, to establish a data centre, Otumfuo reminded the vice chancellor to see to its realisation.

Otumfuo also charged the citizenry and the Electoral Commission to safeguard the country’s democratic ideals.

“The Electoral Commission must also ensure fairness and be seen to be an impartial arbiter in the electoral process. Our collective aspiration must be to foster an environment of mutual respect and constructive dialogue,” he said.

The vice-chancellor, Prof. (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, touted the success of the Support One Needy Student with One Laptop (SONSOL) project and appealed to benevolent organisations and individuals to continuously support the project.

Drama in Offinso! Indigenes shun Otumfuo’s choice, pay homage to Dr KK Sarpong

Reports from Offinso in the Ashanti Region indicate that the deposed queen mother is displaying behaviors that suggest she is contesting her removal from office.

Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, despite being officially destooled in January 2024 by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reportedly appointed a new paramount chief for the area.

This action contradicts the current situation where a new chief has already been appointed and sworn in before the Asantehene.

The former queen mother had been engaged in a dispute with the Otumfuo over the selection of a new Offinsomanhene throughout 2023.

She persisted in presenting Dr. KK Sarpong, the former boss of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), despite his rejection by the Otumfuo on three occasions due to his non-royal status in the area.

Following reports of her appointment of Dr. KK Sarpong, a video has surfaced on social media, particularly on Facebook, showing the former GNPC boss receiving homage from individuals believed to be his supporters.

In the video, a group of women can be seen singing praises and paying respects to Dr. KK Sarpong, who is seated on a large chair with his feet propped up on a stool.

Some of the women can be heard expressing their support for Dr. KK Sarpong as the rightful chief, referring to any other claimant as illegitimate.

This event reportedly took place during the current week.

Additionally, GhanaWeb has obtained a letter on the queen mother’s letterhead introducing Dr. KK Sarpong as the paramount chief to the Offinso Municipal Assembly, as well as a letter from the Assembly warning against any procession by the opposing faction.

Earlier in the week, a crowd marched to the former queen mother’s residence chanting for a new chief for the Offinso traditional area. Many of these disgruntled residents advocated for Dr. KK Sarpong to be appointed as chief, as he was initially endorsed by the kingmakers.

Most of these residents, who wore funeral clothes to portray their seriousness and sadness over the claim of ‘no chief in the town’, chanted, “We want our new chief, K.K. Sarpong”.

    Background:

Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong was initially elected by the Ofinso queen mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, and the other kingmakers to succeed the late Nana Wiafe Akenteng, but he was disqualified by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for not being a royal.

A new chief, Nana Amoako Poku, has since been enstooled by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. This occurred after the Kwakwaboa Abusuapanin, Opanin Yaw Nkrumah Adusah, assumed the queen’s mother’s responsibility in her absence and presented the new candidate.

During the installation of the new chief, there were rumours that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II had destooled the queen mother of Offinso for failing to honour his invitations.

Offinso residents storm residence of Otumfuo ‘dethroned’ queen mother to demand their new chief

The notion that the Offinso queen mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, has been dethroned by the Asante paramount chief, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, seems unfamiliar to many locals in the area.

As a result, a significant number of residents have gathered at her residence to call for the appointment of a new chief.

The Asantehene officially removed the queen mother from her position due to insubordination in January 2024.

Expressing their discontent and demanding a new leader for the Offinso traditional area, these concerned residents are advocating for Dr. KK Sarpong to assume the role, as he was initially endorsed by the kingmakers.

Most of these residents, who wore funeral clothes to portray their seriousness and sadness over the claim of ‘no chief in the town’, chanted, “We want our new chief, K.K. Sarpong”.

In a video post by ASIASE TV, the aggrieved residents were captured singing and chanting “Ofinso Hemaa, yeegye yen hene, Kurontihene, yeegye yen hene, Abusuapanin, yeegye yen hene,” which means, “Queen mother and her elders, we want our new chief.”

Amid the blowing of horns and singing of songs to demand a new chief, some youth were also captured in a video along the streets of the Offinso township, chanting for a new chief.

Some residents spoke to journalists in an interview, and said: “Recently, we saw the Offinso manhemaa and her elders choose Dr. K. K. Sarpong. But a few weeks later, we can’t see anything, and we don’t understand what is happening.

“We’ve been waiting for him to come and help develop Offinso, and we know he is capable of developing and providing jobs for the youth. Day in and day out, every youth cries for Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong to become the Offinso chief; we know no one apart from KK.”

“He is the one we know the queen mother has chosen. Even now that he has not been installed, there are lots of things he’s done. Currently, as I speak, he’s catering for my children’s school, and there are many others he’s doing the same for,” another resident said.

Many of those interviewed expressed sorrow over the lack of development in the town since the passing of Nana Wiafe Akenteng.

After leaving the queen mother’s residence, the disgruntled residents and some members of the Ahyirem Royal Family visited Nana Kwabena Agyeibi Obeng, a representative of the Ahyirem Abusuapanin, seeking clarification.

Among their concerns was the whereabouts of Dr. KK Sarpong.

Speaking to the media, Nana Agyeibi Obeng assured the residents that he and his elders would make efforts to bring back Dr. KK Sarpong.

He praised Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko for standing firm in her belief that Dr. KK Sarpong was the rightful candidate for the throne.

He pledged to support the queen mother’s cause, which he viewed as noble, to install Dr. KK Sarpong as the chief of Offinso.

However, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II disqualified him for not having royal lineage.

Subsequently, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II enstooled a new chief, Nana Amoako Poku, after Kwakwaboa Abusuapanin, Opanin Yaw Nkrumah Adusah, assumed the queen mother’s duties and presented the new candidate.

During the installation of the new chief, there were rumours that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II had destooled the queen mother of Offinso for failing to heed his summons. However, the actions of the aggrieved residents suggest that they still recognize her authority.

Some residents interviewed by journalists claimed they had not witnessed the queen mother being destooled.

The customary opulence of the King’s attire took on a unique and symbolic twist, with his tiger-skin headgear signifying the Asante King’s formidable presence.

The use of “sumanmma,” exclusively worn during battles, replaced the typical gold necklaces, wristbands, and anklets, underscoring the King’s readiness for any challenge.

  • I can sue you all – Angry Maurice Ampaw tells Ashanti Chiefs

I can sue you all – Angry Maurice Ampaw tells Ashanti Chiefs

Legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw has announced his intention to drag an Ashanti Chief to court over a remark the latter made against the former in reaction to derogatory allegations against the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

The Divisional Heads of the Kumasi Traditional Councilagain have expressed indignation about the purported use of two of the Kumasi-based radio stations owned by Chairman Wontumi by Maurice Ampaw, to further denigrate chiefs in the Ashanti region.

The duo have been summoned to appear before the Council on Monday, January 29, 2024.

But ahead of this meeting to address the matter, Mr Ampaw has recounted an incident where he was referenced by one of the Chiefs in a manner he found derogatory.

In an interview on Kasapa FM, Mr Ampaw, on Thursday, January 25, noted that he would not take the comments likely and is considering a class action suit.

“The constitution guarantees us all a fair hearing, and for someone you summoned me and the party came to plead on his behalf, and you sit right there to judge the person and someone referenced me, one of the Chiefs saying, ‘Lawyer Ampaw, is he a lawyer in a car?’ That’s how that chief addressed me, saying he doesn’t know the type of Lawyer I am, imagine making such utterances.”

“You have made bad utterances about me on social media, trying to get my reaction as a chief and rubbish my credentials. I can sue the Chief in court, and it’s an option I am considering,” he added.

Despite the initial tension, Mr Ampaw assured that he would honour the Chiefs’ invitation.

“Everything that I have said will be subjected to strict proof. I am going there happily because I will explain everything to them. I will wear white-white. I am ready,” he added.

In a surprising turn of events, Maurice Ampaw has issued an apology to the Chiefs of the Ashanti region, retracting one of his earlier statements he deemed extreme.

“I am using this platform to tell Nananom (chiefs) that if my utterances were extreme and they see it very offensive, I retract and apologize.

“I believe that let Asanteman move on, there is so much to do in the Ashanti Region and there is so much at stake in this political area and my love for Bawumia and NPP still stands.

“It is my prayer that we all support Chairman Wontumi to bring victory to the party and also support Otumfuo to bring development to the Ashanti Region and Ghana as a whole,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM.

In an earlier interview with Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin on GhanAkoma, Mr Ampaw stated that “We are going to talk law, and no one is above the law. I will honour the invitation; you will clap for lawyer Ampaw on Monday. I am going with the truth. Otumfuo supports the truth, and I am going to lay bare the facts.”
