  • I can’t disrespect Otumfuo, allegations against me are false – Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has vehemently denied allegations of making derogatory remarks about the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Asante Kingdom.

Chairman Wontumi emphasized his profound respect for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, asserting that he would never use abusive language towards the revered king or challenge his authority.

In an interview with Wontumi radio, the businessman urged Ghanaians to dismiss all accusations against him, highlighting that everyone in Asanteman can testify to his respectful demeanor.

He further declared his commitment to taking every necessary step to clear his name from all the allegations made against him.

“All people in Asanteman will attest to the fact that I am a respectful being. Even those who dislike me will affirm that. I have a lot of respect for the Asantehene and the Asante Kingdom and will never do anything to tarnish its reputation. All these allegations are not true; they are pure lies. I cannot engage in such behavior. Anyone who wishes to lie can do so, but eventually, the truth will be exposed. I, Wontumi, will do everything possible to exonerate myself. Thank you for your audience,” he stated.

Chairman Wontumi is currently facing accusations of making disrespectful comments about the Asantehene.

Allegedly, Nana Kwaku Duah, Chief of Kokoso, and Manhyia South NPP Constituency Chairman Ofori Attah, also known as Tom-Tom, officially filed a complaint with the Kumasi Traditional Council.

In response to the complaint, the council summoned Bernard Antwi Boasiako on January 22, urging him to appear on Monday, January 29, to address questions related to the reported derogatory remarks made during the vetting of parliamentary aspirants in Manhyia South.

The NPP General Secretary conveyed that Chairman Wontumi is currently unwell and requested a two-week grace period for his appearance.

This request has caused discontent among council members, who insist on Chairman Wontumi’s appearance, even suggesting that he appears in a wheelchair if necessary.

Asantehene urges IGP to ensure peace during 2024 elections

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to enact effective measures ensuring the peaceful conduct of the forthcoming 2024 general elections.

The Asantehene emphasized that Ghana has reached a mature stage, and therefore, it is imperative to implement adequate measures to prevent disruptions that commonly occur during general elections.

During a courtesy call by the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to the Manhyia Palace as part of his visit to the Ashanti region, the Asantehene made the statement.

“I will urge you that this year is an election year. This is not the first time we are voting; we’ve always been voting. I urge you all to put in measures to ensure peace in the upcoming election. You must protect the country. It is your duty, hence, to put in measures for the country to live up to that.”

He additionally urged the police to implement stringent measures to combat the menace of illegal mining, which has resulted in the degradation of water bodies and forest reserves.

“Recently, there have been illegal mining cases which have become a challenge. I’ll plead with you all to help put a stop to that. It is affecting our lands and water bodies.

The IGP, Mr. Damapre also assured the Asantehene to continue his good works to promote peace in the country and indicated some measures that have been put in place to safeguard the security of Ghanaians.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Asantehene for his enormous support in building the nation.

  • Offinsohemaa dethroned by Otumfuo

    Offinsohemaa dethroned by Otumfuo

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has put an end to Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko’s more than three-decade rule as the Queen Mother of the Offinso Traditional Area.

The dethronement announcement took place on Thursday, January 11, 2024, during the inaugural meeting of the Asanteman Council for the year.

This marks Otumfuo’s first dethronement in 2024. The newly installed chief of Offinso, Nana Dwamena Akenten II, appeared before the Asanteman Council, presided over by the Asantehene, to take the oath of allegiance.

The dethronement was based on accusations of significant insubordination, primarily arising from Offinsohemaa’s refusal to appear before Otumfuo following a summons and other reported offences.

Otumfuo, delivering the verdict, stated, “I deliver the town into your hands alone. You have no queen, mother. Find a new queen mother to help you undertake your mandate when you have settled down. We need a queen mother who will be present here when we need her.”
The controversy surrounding the Offinso stool emerged from allegations that certain individuals, spearheaded by the Queen Mother, were attempting to “sell” it to Dr. Desmond Kofi Koduah Sarpong, the former Board Chairman of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club.

Hemanhene Nana Wiafe Apau Sanwoansan, representing the Bekum Division, revealed at a press conference in December that members of the royal family had informed Otumfuo about the Queen Mother’s alleged actions to compromise tradition and transfer the stool to KK Sarpong.

Following Otumfuo’s investigations, it was uncovered that KK Sarpong, presented by the Queen Mother as the candidate for the stool, had no familial ties to the Ahyirem Royal Family, as he had asserted.

The woman from whom he purportedly hailed was found to have never borne a child, resulting in disqualification. This revelation heightened tensions between the Queen Mother and some of the youth of Offinso.

NDC cooked reports – Chairman Wontumi denies disrespect claims towards Otumfuo

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely recognised as Chairman Wontumi and serving as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has refuted claims that he contested the authority of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.

He asserted that these allegations are unfounded, malicious, and deceptive. Chairman Wontumi accused certain individuals of trying to sow discord between him, the ruling party, and the Asantehene.

In a press statement dated January 11, 2024, he said that his office “has taken notice of a news report circulating on both the traditional and social media spaces, suggesting that I have acted in a manner that is disrespectful to His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“Specifically, the said news report was carried on Monday, January 10, 2024, in the Punch newspaper and also on AkomaFM and Onuaonline, both NDC-sponsored news outlets.

“First, I would like to place on record that this story is false, malicious, misleading and a calculated attempt by some elements to pitch the ruling party and my good self against the Asantehene, the occupant of the Golden Stool, for reasons best known to them,” part of the press statement said.

Wontumi asserted that he never made any statement to that effect during or after the said NPP vetting.

“I have never made any statement or gestures, before, during or after the vetting that should warrant such disgraceful and an unfounded reportage, and, I therefore, urge party faithfuls and the good people of Asanteman to respectfully, disregard this and treat it with the contempt it deserves.

“What was laughable is the fact that the writers and sponsors of this malicious venture, could not even provide any evidence to buttress their points as they hid behind “it is alleged”, “he is reported to have…”, but could not make a definite statement in their reportage, “he added.

Wontumi continued: “This clearly indicates that this was a calculated move targeted at my person by some NDC media outlets and their sponsors, just to tarnish my reputation.”

Earlier reports indicated that Chairman Wontumi was called to the Manhyia Palace to clarify allegations of him showing disrespect to Otumfuo. Allegedly, this incident occurred during a meeting of the NPP parliamentary primaries vetting committee.

The NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, who presided over the vetting committee, has rejected the assertions of Wontumi disrespecting Otumfuo.

Specifically, the said news report was carried on Monday, January 10, 2024, in the Punch newspaper and also on AkomaFM and Onuaonline, both NDC-sponsored news outlets.

Captioned “Wontumi Disrespected Otumfuo at NPP Vetting” on the front page of the NDC’s Punch newspaper, the said story sought to suggest that I made those comments during a vetting process of NPP parliamentary aspirants last week.

First, I would like to place on record that this story is false, malicious, misleading and a calculated attempt by some elements to pitch the ruling party and my good self against the Asantehene, the occupant of the Golden Stool, for reasons best known to them.

This clearly indicates that this was a calculated move targeted at my person by some NDC media outlets and their sponsors, just to tarnish my reputation.

As nature would give it, I come from a home with strong understanding of traditions and customs, respect for traditional authorities, and graciously, I have the privilege to serve my party in a capacity as the regional Chairman in the Asante Kingdom.

With my years of service to the golden stool as the regional chairman, I have served with pride and in dignity to the Asantehene, and, there have never been any moment that my actions and inactions have suggested insubordination to the occupant of the golden stool because I serve the NPP and ultimately the Golden Stool.

I am by this medium giving the PUNCH newspaper, Broadcastergh.com and AkomaFM/Onuaonline, to retract and apologize within 24 hours to my person and Manhyia Palace, through the same medium, or I will initiate a legal action against them.

I am focused, well resolved and well placed to lead the party in the region to break the 8, and make Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the next President of the republic of Ghana, in 2025, therefore, such detractive elements cannot weigh me down.

    Thank You

Manhyia Palace has reportedly summoned Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This summons follows allegations that Wontumi challenged the authority of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

According to a report from Onuaonline.com, Wontumi openly questioned the Asantehene’s authority during a session of the NPP parliamentary primaries vetting committee last week.

The report states that, without provocation, the party chairman asserted that he had established his own kingdom and would not hesitate to challenge Otumfuo if they disagreed on an issue.

“I have built my own kingdom, I have my own police and military, and I will speak my mind to Otumfuo if I disagree on an issue with him (Otumfuo)” the report quoted Wontumi as stating.

The report highlighted that Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP National Organiser, served as the chairman of the vetting committee during the incident.

Additionally, Kokosohene Nana Kwaku Duah, who was present at the time, is reported to have expressed a strong objection to Wontumi’s statement.

“For you to even say those words in my presence is unacceptable, and I’m not happy about your weird and disrespectful behaviour,” Kokosohene reportedly fumed at Wontumi.

Subsequent to the incident, reports suggest that the Asanteman Traditional Council has penned a letter to Justin Frimpong Kodua, the General Secretary of the NPP.

The purpose of this communication is to request facilitation for Chairman Wontumi’s appearance at the Manhyia Palace. The aim is for Wontumi to provide an explanation regarding the alleged disrespect shown towards Otumfuo.

Akufo-Addo has held no secret meeting with Dormaahene – Eugene Arhin

The Presidency has issued a swift response to circulating rumors on social media suggesting that President Akufo-Addo is endorsing Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, in an alleged attack on the revered Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Communications Director at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, has categorically dismissed the claims.

In a Facebook post, Eugene Arhin, emphasized that the claims are mere products of individuals’ imagination. Arhin urged the public to dismiss such assertions with disdain.

“Indeed, on no occasion has President Akufo-Addo held a secret meeting with the Dormaahene to, as it were, prop him up to disrespect the Asantehene. No such thing has happened, and no such thing will ever happen,” portions of the statement read.

He further noted that President Akufo-Addo will continue to work harmoniously with all traditional leaders in the country until the end of his tenure.

  • “House of kings” over “House of chiefs” – This is why Otumfuo is not a member of House of Chiefs

“House of kings” over “House of chiefs” – This is why Otumfuo is not a member of House of Chiefs

Chief of Kwahu Tafo, Nana Okogyeedom Oheneba Ntim-Barimah, recently explained the absence of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, from the National House of Chiefs. According to Nana Oheneba Ntim-Barimah, the Asantehene’s decision stems from a desire to preserve the distinct identity of the Ashanti Kingdom.

In an interview with One Ghana TV, Nana Oheneba Ntim-Barimah pointed out that participating in the National House of Chiefs would imply acceptance of the ‘paramount chief’ title imposed by the British during the colonial era.

He emphasized that this term was introduced by the British to diminish the stature of traditional rulers, reserving the title of ‘king’ exclusively for the British monarch.

Nana Oheneba Ntim-Barimah advocated for a renaming of the National House of Chiefs to the National House of Kings, aligning with the practice in other African countries like South Africa.

This, he believes, would accurately reflect the esteemed status of traditional rulers across the nation.

“We have accepted having a National House of Chief, which should be a National House of Kings. That is why the Otumfuo says he is not a member (of the National House of Chief). People would say, he is being proud but they are protecting the empire.

“We can’t call our monarchs, chief; those of us who served them can be called chiefs… read the Bible, which of the 42 kings were called chiefs. Read your bible, we have King Jehosaphat, King Hazia, King, King Jotham, King David… have you ever seen the word chief in the bible? The Bible recognises every monarch as a King,” he said in Twi.

He added, “Ashantis say Otumfuo, which means a glorious monarch; if you want to translate it to English, it means King of Kings. The ruler of Juaben is a King, the ruler of Kumawu is a King, the ruler of Agogo is a King, the ruler of Offinso is a King. And Otumfuo is the head of all of them so he is a King of Kings”.

Asantehene urges feuding factions in Bawku to chose peace

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged opposing factions in the Bawku conflict to reconsider their stances and prioritize peace. His plea is aimed at restoring the free movement of people and fostering development in the area.

He emphasized that the prolonged conflict could result in widespread poverty, setbacks in infrastructure and human development, as well as increased instances of diseases and hunger among the population.

Therefore, it is crucial for all parties involved in the conflict to engage in introspection, seeking peaceful and amicable resolutions to their internal issues. This approach is essential to instill hope in the younger generations.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu made the call in an address read for him by Oguahyia Oduro Panin Birikorang, Chief of Edubiase in the Ashanti Region, during the annual Quran recitation and Islamic prayers for the nation in Kumasi.

The Asantehene reminded Ghanaians about the impending political campaigns and called for tolerance of divergent views.

He said it was important for politicians to refrain from engaging in tribal or religious politics and rather, focus on disseminating messages that would help transform the country and give hope to the people.

The Asantehene pointed out that political intolerance had been the cause of conflicts, poverty, destruction and loss of lives in many African countries, saying, Ghana was not ready to veer into that direction.

He appealed to the youth in Zongo communities not to yield to political orchestrations that would force them to commit violence during the electioneering campaigns, adding that, having two people from the north to lead the two biggest political parties in the 2024 general elections, was a testimony of how young people from the northern part of the country could rise to lead and transform Ghana.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu appealed to the people in Zongo communities to take advantage of the Otumfuo Educational Trust Fund to climb higher in their educational pursuits.

He also urged the chiefs and elders in Zongo communities to work to protect children and the youth from the activities of politicians who only use and dumb them after elections.

Mr Mohammed Kabir Abubakar of Al – Azariya Islamic Institute was adjudged the best memorizer of the three-week Tahfiz contest, and was awarded with a brand new Picato Rio saloon car donated by Mr Ali Suraj, a presidential staffer.

I was barred from Berekum funeral because I am scary – Dormaahene

The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, has offered additional remarks concerning the injunction preventing his participation in the final funeral rites of the Berekumhene scheduled for November 2023.

Addressing an event in the Bono Region, he emphasized the irony of a mysterious individual like himself being subjected to an injunction that bars attendance at a public event.

“Ever seen a chief who is not mysterious, yet becomes the subject of an injunction before a funeral can be held? I am the very one who such can be done to and by extension the people of Bono,” he stated at the gathering.

The Dormaahene, who is also a sitting High Court judge, expressed concern over recent chieftaincy-related disturbances in Sampa, located in the Bono Region.

Narrating a series of events, he highlighted that the installation of a new paramount chief had become entangled in litigation, initially referred to Manhyia for resolution after facing challenges at the Bono House of Chiefs.

According to him, the resolution at Manhyia was not followed by the proper legal process for court approval, leading to complications. The Dormaahene suggested that the failure to seek court approval could be attributed to the unfortunate incidents, including deaths and gunshot wounds, that occurred during the coronation of the new chief in Sampa.

Sampa is situated in the Bono Region, bordering Côte d’Ivoire, and serves as the capital of Jaman North District.

Regarding his ban from the Berekumhene’s funeral, Agyeman Badu II expressed that he will forever recall the circumstances surrounding the prohibition. The Sunyani High Court issued a restraint on his attendance on November 22, citing the potential for a breach of peace, especially with the presence of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on the same day.

The court order was a response to an application presented by a member of the Berekum Traditional Council, Osabarima Kyere Yeboah Darteh II.

X user receives backlash for commenting on Otumfuo’s entourage

This commentary followed the user quoting a video from the pro-Manhyia media outlet Opemsuo Radio, showcasing over 20 Land Cruisers, a Range Rover, Lexus, Tundra, and other luxury vehicles departing from the Manhyia Palace to Berekum.

The tweet’s caption stated: “Otumfuor’s convoy is longer than the president’s own and has more sweepers than the president, but everyone is quiet because he is Otumfuor.”

In response, the post received harsh reactions, with critics questioning why the user was so concerned about Otumfuo’s convoy to the extent of comparing it to Akufo-Addo’s.

Some inquired about the user’s awareness of the Asantehene’s contributions to government taxes, while others directed him to focus his critique on the political class responsible for public finances.

    Below are some reactions:

  • It is obvious Otumfuo is doing everything possible to prevent K. K. Sarpong’s enstoolment as Offinsohene – Ashyirem Royal Gate

It is obvious Otumfuo is doing everything possible to prevent K. K. Sarpong’s enstoolment as Offinsohene – Ashyirem Royal Gate

Ashyirem Royal Gate has voiced strong criticism against Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his rejection of the nomination of Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, the former Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), as the paramount chief of Offinso.

In a press release published on GhanaWeb, the Royal Gate accused the Asantehene of employing various tactics to obstruct Dr. K. K. Sarpong’s nomination, despite his being the preferred choice of the Offinso community.

Furthermore, the group expressed their disappointment with Otumfuo’s remarks made during the rejection of Dr. Sarpong’s nomination at a gathering held at the Manhyia Palace

“It is important to note that Otumfuo’s pronouncements at some of the Asanteman Council sittings on the Offinso Stool Affairs are regrettable. There have been unsubstantiated allegations, among others, all in a bid to justify a course of action he wants to take. Recounting these here can be very embarrassing, to say the least.

“…One can justifiably conclude that Otumfuo is trying at ALL COST, to find a reason to block Dr. K. K. Sarpong’s nomination. But we think the Overlord of Asanteman should eschew bias and exhibit fairness towards the Ashyirem Royal family and Offinsoman. Truth is that since we revere Otumfuo, it would have been disrespectful to have challenged his pronouncements while he was sitting in State.

However, it is only fair that very obvious errors that undermine the rights of the Ashyirem royals, including Dr. K. K. Sarpong, ought to be corrected,” parts of the statement read.

Additionally, the group alleged that the Asantehene resorted to intimidation tactics in an attempt to compel the Offinsohemaa, who are the kingmakers of Offinso, and K.K. Sarpong to yield to his wishes.

“Is this not contrary to the very principles on which Asanteman was founded and built? Wherein lies the “ ka bi na menka bi” mantra? Asanteman should be fair to all of its citizens at all times. We humbly appeal to Otumfuo not to wage a personal vendetta on anyone so as to get his will to prevail. Rather, justice should be done to all manner of persons to honour the Golden Stool and in line with his own oath,” it said.

The group also said that the Asantehene had no power to enstool a paramount chief (Omanhene).

“In line with Asante customs and traditions, which are often hammered by Otumfuo himself, he (Otumfuo) does not select and enstool any Omanhene. This is also the spirit of the Asante Confederacy, which protects the identity of each paramountcy. Otumfuo and Asanteman Council are invited to resolve misunderstandings in the process of enstoolment but not to undermine a process which has gone the full length without any blemish,” it added.

On April 28, 2022, just before his departure for the United States, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II declined a request from Offinsohene Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko to endorse Dr. Sarpong as her nominee for the Offinso stool. Instead, he advised her to adhere to the traditions and customary protocols.

The kingmakers of the Offinso Traditional Area had selected the former GNPC executive to assume the role left vacant by the passing of the late paramount chief of Offinso, Nana Wiafe Akenten II, who had joined his ancestors.

  • Manhyia is infringing on our rights! – Offinso elders

Manhyia is infringing on our rights! – Offinso elders

Offinso’s enraged youth and elders have accused His Royal Majesty, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of violating their rights by rejecting the Queen Mother’s candidate for the vacant Offinso stool following the death of Offinso Nana Wiafe Akenten III in 2019.

Addressing the press on October 24, 2023, during a protest against Otumfuo’s stance on the matter, the clan head of Bretuo read out a statement expressing their disappointment and discontent over how the Asantehene was handling the chieftaincy disputes surrounding the Offinso stool.

He said, “Manhyia wants to abuse the rights of Offinso; hence, I’m here to read out the content of this letter I have here with me.

“Offinsoman is highly disappointed in Manhyia over how the pending chif dispute is being resolved by his royal majesty, Asantehene”.

On their part, the Queen Mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, per customs, has presented a viable candidate, subject to the approval of all Offinso kingmakers but it appears Otumfuo wants to abuse the respect  their queen mother has for Otumfuo.

“Offinso has noticed that Otumfuo is taking undue advantage of the respect our queen mother has for him and therefore exercising his powers over our queen mother to harass and make her powerless.

“There were 18 contestants and the queen mother chose her possible 3 and finally settled on Dr KK Sarpong. The kingmakers unanimously accepted the nominee; if the kingmakers had rejected the nominee, the queenmother would not have presented it. We repeat that there is nothing like an objection from the queen-makers.

Customs were made and there was aseda nsa  to the kingmakers, namely Akyeamehene, Gyasehene,Kontihene, Nifahene, Ankobeahene,Adontenehene, Akyeame group, and Asonahene, as customs demand”.

They went on to charge the Asantehene to step aside and allow the Offinso quenmother and her entourage to do their job, as he has no right to “enstool or destool any Omahene”.

“We can state emphatically that Otumfuo has no power to enstool or destool any Omahene and should allow the Offinso hemaa and  her kingmakers to do their job as custom demands.”

Meanwhile, even though it appears many of the Offinso natives support the queenmothers and candidate KK Sarpong, others  also agree with Otumfuo’s assertion that  the queenmother and elders of Offinso had taken bribes from Dr. Sarpong and were trying to sell the stool to him.

Otumfuo also warned them to stop their illegal activities and cooperate with him to resolve the issue amicably .

He clarified that he is extending his tolerance towards the queenmother primarily due to her familial ties and the memory of his late mother, the Asantehemaa.

Drama unfolds at Manhyia Palace as Asantehene settles chieftaincy dispute

On Wednesday, October 25, 2023, a dramatic scene played out at the Manhyia Palace as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, presided over a chieftaincy dispute involving the Anyeneyere stool in Atwima.

One of the parties involved, a woman, asserted her status as the queen mother of Anyenyere, arguing that she inherited the stool and lands from her late husband.

She alleged that the other party, Ofori, who is a descendant of the Otumfuo, was wrongfully taking over the lands she had given him.

The Asantehene and his sub-chiefs did not take kindly to her claims, prompting them to question her account. The Asantehene, visibly angered, accused the woman of fabricating lies and denied her any right to the land.

When the queen mother attempted to provide further explanations, the Asantehene’s irritation escalated. He sternly declared, “Stop acting foolishly because you are no queen. What kind of falsehoods are these?”

“You came here to lie; leave my face. You are not a queen,” he added.

Following this confrontation, the woman was escorted out of the Asantehene’s presence, and her slippers were removed, symbolizing her removal from the situation.

Asantehene to lead $10M campaign for renovation of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital wards

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will spearhead a campaign to raise $10 million for the renovation of inpatient wards at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

Despite its establishment in 1955, the hospital has not undergone significant renovation, which is negatively impacting the quality of inpatient care.

This revitalization effort will focus on renovating blocks A, B, C, and D, forming part of the legacy initiatives commemorating the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Asantehene’s enstoolment next year.

The commitment was made by Otumfuo during a meeting at the Manhyia Palace, where Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, the CEO of KATH, introduced the ‘Heal Komfo Anokye Project’ team to him.

This visit aimed to present a technical and financial proposal developed by the team to guide the renovation of the 70-year-old health facility. The team sought the Asantehene’s support for the initiative.

Strategically, Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II emphasized KATH’s pivotal role in the nation’s healthcare system, as well as its significance to the social, cultural, and historical heritage of the Asante kingdom.

He stressed the collective responsibility to not only preserve the institution but also provide the necessary support to ensure its effective and efficient functioning.

Given ongoing delays in the construction of other health facilities in the region, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II underscored the importance of maintaining KATH’s operational excellence in catering to healthcare needs both locally and beyond.

Highlighting the uniqueness of KATH’s role compared to other regions, he stated that the hospital serves as both a training center for medical students and a provider of specialized healthcare.

Commending the dedication of the “Heal Komfo Anokye Project” team, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II encouraged them to formally launch the fundraising campaign.

He called upon the public and corporate entities to contribute to the fundraising efforts, ensuring the successful realization of the renovation project.

Otumfuo also designated Hiahene, Nana Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene II, as his representative on the project team.

Prof. Addai-Mensah, KATH’s CEO, expressed the urgency of providing the hospital with a fitting status and explained that while routine repairs were conducted over the years, comprehensive renovation was necessary due to the extensive wear and tear experienced over seven decades.

Samuel Adu-Boakye, the Chairman of the “Heal Komfo Anokye Project” team, outlined a comprehensive marketing and communication strategy to raise funds from the public and corporate Ghana. He highlighted the potential impact of even small individual contributions, aiming to rally one million Ghanaians to donate $10 each to meet the $10 million target swiftly.

The project’s lead architect, Kojo Darko-Asante, affirmed that the proposal was meticulously crafted by a team of technical and engineering experts.

The planned renovation is expected to transform the hospital’s wards into a world-class, patient-friendly facility upon successful implementation.

  • Destooled Abuontemhene reportedly referred to Police for investigation

Destooled Abuontemhene reportedly referred to Police for investigation

It appears the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has not relented in his unwavering determination to root out corruption among particular chiefs in his region.

The Asantehene recently sanctioned a number of chiefs over various offenses including fraud and involvement in galamsey, by destooling them.

Otumfuo has taken the sanctions further by referring to a chief who has been cited for fraud to the police.

The predicament of Nana Kwaku Duah III, the deposed Chief of Abuontem, seems to be worsening, as he is the chief in focus who has been referred to the police for potential prosecution due to his engagement in multiple land sales.

Following extensive discussions on the issue, in which Nana Kwaku Duah III was given ample time to present his perspective and request leniency, he was ultimately pronounced guilty. As a result, he was swiftly dethroned and deprived of all privileges as per Asante tradition.

Having completed the customary procedures regarding the Chief’s predicament, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II instructed that he be handed over to the police. This action was taken to enable his prosecution for his involvement in the various land sales.

The Asantehene appears to have initiated a campaign to address chiefs within his realm who are involved in actions that are either culturally inappropriate or against the law.

Several chiefs have suffered consequences for one act or another recently, especially with regard to land sales.

Follow Otumfuo’s steps, sack officials engaged in galamsey – Akufo-Addo told

The Media Coalition Against Galamsey is urging President Akufo-Addo to take a page out of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s playbook by removing government officials found guilty of participating in illegal mining activities.

This call comes in the wake of Otumfuo’s decision to dethrone the Chief of Abuontem, Nana Kwaku Duah III, over allegations of his involvement in the illicit sale of lands that rightfully belong to various individuals and families.

The Chief’s destoolment and subsequent handover to the police occurred during a Kumasi Traditional Council session held at the Manhyia Palace on Monday.

In response to this development, the convener of the Coalition, Ing Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, commended Otumfuo for his leadership and encouraged President Akufo-Addo to adopt a similar approach in his governance.

“This is what we expect of leadership and I completely agree with Otumfuo that if you are a chief, and you have galamsey happening in your community, you are either complicit and are deeply involved in it or you are incompetent and in both cases, you are not worthy of being the chief or leader of the people. And I think this is the Asantehene walking the talk and so it is the same action that we require of the president.”

Chief of Bekwai Abodom, Nana Saforo Koto, has been destooled by the Asantehene for engaging in illegal mining activities within his jurisdiction.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has waged war engaged any subordinate of his caught to be engaging or promoting illegal mining activities within the Ashanti Kingdom.

Otumfuo destools Abuontemhene over illegal sale of land

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has once again destooled another chief. Abuontemhene of Kumasi Traditional Council, Nana Kwaku Duah III  the chief in question and has been destooled for illegally selling lands under his jurisdiction.

The announcement was made on Monday, August 21, during a meeting held at the Menhyia Palace by the Kumasi Traditional Council.

Accusations made by other subchiefs led to the decision to remove Nana Kwaku Duah III from his role as divisional chief.

The subchiefs accused him of selling lands while under investigation and having received a trespassing warning from Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in addition to disobeying the instructions of the latter.

The subchiefs presented a series of allegations including claims that he used Otumfuo’s name to gain approval for his activities on the land in question, despite the ongoing investigation.

They further accused him of venturing into territory belonging to others and facilitating land sales without proper authorization.

In response to the allegations, Nana Kwaku Duah III denied the specific accusation of using Otumfuo’s name as leverage for his actions.

However, he acknowledged his presence on the land but asserted that he allowed others to work on it with his permission.

“With all due respect, Nana, I am not feeling well, I’m feeling dizzy now…but I am pleading because, to be honest, and to speak the truth, I have never stood anywhere before to claim that his Lordship has ruled over a matter in my favor, that is the exact truth I have never claimed that before, what I said to Nana Acheamfour is that, I permitted them to work on the land.”

During the proceedings, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II gave the subchiefs the opportunity to share their opinions on the matter. Unanimously, the subchiefs called for Nana Kwaku Duah III’s removal from his position due to his alleged disobedience and misconduct.

In response, Otumfuo announced the decision to destool Nana Kwaku Duah III, emphasizing that his actions had violated his authority and orders.

“For me saying that nobody should go to the said land and for you to go there, you have disrespected his lordship of which you can no longer remain a chief. Tell them for them to know that even sitting on that throne, you are not from the royal family,” Otumfuo said.

Alleged thugs beat up masons constructing wall fencing at Kotwi

A group of individuals, suspected to be hired thugs, have attacked a team of masons who were constructing a fence around a royal burial ground in Kotwi, a neighborhood in Atwima Kwanwoma in the Ashanti region.

This aggressive action followed allegations that the masons defied an order issued by Ashanti’s paramount leader, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to have the burial ground fenced for its protection.

Several masons shared their accounts of the incident, stating that they were working on a fencing contract assigned by the area’s family head when they were confronted and assaulted by the unknown thugs who abruptly halted their work.

“They questioned our authority to work there, and upon mentioning the Abusuapanin, they started physically attacking us, demanding we stop. They proceeded to demolish the work we had done. This isn’t the first time these strongmen have come to halt our work through violence,” reported the masons.

According to these workers, the thugs, claiming to be acting on behalf of the chief of Kotwi, asserted that only the chief had the right to award contracts for the site.

Further investigations revealed that the royal burial ground, Anokye Banmu, has suffered encroachment and various forms of degradation. Apart from unauthorized construction, the site has witnessed the dumping of waste, defecation, and activities like milling, drinking establishments, and mechanical work, causing noise and unpleasant conditions.

During a visit to Anokye Banmu, graves and tombstones of royals, possibly descendants of Okomfo Anokye and other members of the Ashanti kingdom, were observed.

Abusuapanin Kwabena Mensah, the head of the Kotwi royal family, was instructed by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to fence Anokye Banmu to protect it from further damage due to encroachment, misuse, and degradation.

Nana Kwadwo Amoah Ampem Okogyeabour, Executive Director of Corruption Combat International and a descendant of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, appealed for swift action against those responsible for the attack. He alleged that his investigation indicated the chief of Kotwi sent the hired thugs.

He emphasized, “I could not understand why the chief, who should protect Asanteman’s property, would oppose those safeguarding it. I investigated and found that the Kotwi Chief ordered the thugs to stop the work. This is an act of arrogance. I urge the Asantehene to take action against this barbaric act.”

However, secretary to the Kotwi chief, Nana Sei Tutu, contradicted these claims, stating that the Abusuapanin lacked the authority to permit such work on Anokye Banmu.

He asserted that Nana Kwabena Mensah was not the Abusuapanin as claimed by others. Nana Sei Tutu urged the public to dismiss these allegations.

  • Real reason why Otumfuo destooled the Aduamoahene

Real reason why Otumfuo destooled the Aduamoahene

It appears that the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is on a destooling spree, however, none of his decisions are not without basis.

The most recent to be hit by the Asantehene’s wrath is the Nkonsonhene, Nana Osei Tiri II.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, took the decisive step of dethroning the Nkonsonhene due to his blatant disregard for a ruling issued in a land dispute case.

A video, posted on the Royal Palace MultiMedia YouTube page, captured the Gyaasefuor presenting the now-deposed Nkonsonhene, Nana Osei Tiri II, in front of the Asanteman Council.

The complainants detailed how, despite Otumfuo’s ruling that a disputed land area should remain off-limits to both parties, the Nkonsonhene had chosen to flout this decision by leading his people in developing the land.

Otumfuo had imposed a prohibition on accessing the land and called upon both parties to present their plans for his final verdict on the matter. However, Nana Osei Tiri II disregarded this directive.

Following a cross-examination by Otumfuo’s linguist, it was established that the subchief had engaged in misconduct. The Nkonsonhene’s attempts to justify his actions were deemed insufficient, leading to the decision to strip him of his title.

In delivering the verdict, Otumfuo highlighted that the Nkonsonhene had neglected his responsibilities for an extended period, failing to uphold the essential rituals of his office.

He also referenced their childhood friendship as a factor influencing his decision to dismiss the Nkonsonhene from his position, expressing disappointment in the way he had treated his traditional role.

“Kyidonhene is available but you were misconducting yourself. When Kyeame Duah was alive, I told you to go and solve the issues, he died long before Bonsu came in, till date you are litigating over a land. I am right?

“You came to meet Atenehene. I have overlooked you for too long. I was here with you since childhood and we are serving together, so you have become pompous. Yaw Duah, I have been here with you for long in service so you have become ungovernable.

“You are unable to carry out basic rites, you haven’t seen your stool for years now …. Today this day, you are destooled.”

Hear the words of Otumfuo before he dethroned his childhood friend

The King of the Ashanti people, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has dethroned one of his subordinate chiefs due to his disregard for a ruling made in a land dispute between the chief and another party.

A video posted on the Royal Palace MultiMedia YouTube page captures the Gyaasefuor presenting the now dethroned Nkonsonhene, Nana Osei Tiri II, before the Asanteman Council assembly.

During the proceedings, the accusers outlined their claim that despite Otumfuo’s decision that a disputed land parcel should remain off-limits for both parties, the Nkonsonhene had violated this ruling by initiating development on the land.

Otumfuo had imposed a ban on access to the land and summoned the involved parties to present their plans for a final verdict, but Nana Osei Tiri II disregarded this directive.

The King’s spokesperson, who cross-examined the Nkonsonhene, established that the subchief had engaged in inappropriate behavior.

The Nkonsonhene’s attempts to clarify his actions were deemed insufficient, ultimately leading to the decision to strip him of his position.

When addressing the matter, Otumfuo stated that the Nkonsonhene had neglected his responsibilities for a considerable period and had failed to fulfill fundamental duties associated with his role.

He mentioned his prior friendship with the Nkonsonhene during their childhood as a contributing factor in his disappointment, which led to his decision to remove him from his position.

Otumfuo ‘sacks’ another Chief over galamsey

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has removed Nana Saforo Koto from his position as the Chief of Bekwai-Abodom.

The removal from office occurred due to Nana Saforo Koto’s failure to provide a defense against approximately 20 accusations raised by concerned residents in his locality.

The majority of the accusations directed at him primarily involve the purported unregulated selling of land to unauthorized miners. This practice has been contributing to the harmful activities of illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey,’ which has caused significant damage to local water sources.

Moreover, he stands accused of neglecting his community duties for an extended period of 7 years, resulting in the abandonment of critical traditional rites and rituals within the stool house, along with other customary activities.

Subordinates operating under his authority have taken issue with Nana Saforo Koto’s blatant disregard for essential traditional practices associated with his position.

During the proceedings at a sitting of the Asanteman Traditional Council, Otumfuo Kyeame Kwaku Owusu, a key representative of the Asantehene, revealed that Nana Saforo Koto, when given the chance to address the allegations at the committee level, failed to provide satisfactory responses.

After attentively considering the perspectives of various divisional chiefs and assessing the available evidence, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II deemed Nana Saforo Koto culpable on all counts. Consequently, the decision was reached to strip him of his title.

Ahead of the 25th Anniversary celebration of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, it has been indicated that additional chiefs involved in illicit mining activities could face destoolment if found guilty. This decisive measure aims to curtail the unfortunate pollution of river bodies resulting from unlawful mining practices.

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has successfully installed a new Chief for Seikwa in the Tain District of the Bono Region.

The chieftaincy position had been vacant for a decade after the tragic murder of the then Paramount Chief, Nana Kwaku Dwoma Ankoana, in 2013.

  • Asante Kotoko is the only institution embarrassing me – Otumfuo

Asante Kotoko is the only institution embarrassing me – Otumfuo

Overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed a candid and emotional view about the performance and recent conduct of management of popular Ghanaian football club, Asante Kotoko.

It is a well established fact that the Asantehene holds the team dear to his heart; however, he has expressed disappointment regarding recent developments concerning the club.

“Kotoko is the only institution embarrassing my stool,” he said, having taken a tour of Kotoko’s Adako Jachie training facility project, which is still under construction.

Kotoko comfortably won the league in the 2021/22 season with Prosper Narteh Ogum in charge of the club as manager.

However, the former WAFA boss surprisingly parted ways with the club before the start of last season and was replaced by Burkinabe coach Seydou Zerbo.

Although Zerbo made a bright start to life as Kotoko manager, things began to fall apart midway through the season, which led to his sack.

The Porcupine Warriors went on to endure a disappointing campaign that saw them end the last season in fourth place.

The club has also accumulated substantial debts, totaling millions of Ghana Cedis. According to the Asantehene, these debts were primarily accrued from hotel expenses, among other expenditures.

“The current debt is from hotel expenses, players salaries and wages – which have been accrued also from the last two months adding June and July,” he said, as quoted by Joy Sports.

“So we have this debt to clear, before also finding a way around player recruitment. As for you [Kotoko], you are the only ones disgracing me,” he added.

He further admonished the club, especially its management to eschew individualism and put the interest of the club first as this is the most certain path to foster the growth of the team.

Subsequently, the Asantehene revealed the formation of a four-member Interim Management Committee. The committee comprises Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua, the Kontomponiaferehene, former Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah, newly-appointed Kotoko coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, and Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi, who will serve as the administrative manager.

This move comes after the appointment of a four-member Interim Management Committee, tasked with leading the club’s affairs following the dissolution of the previous Board and Management.

On Saturday, July 22, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, accompanied by club legends and supporters, visited Asante Kotoko’s Adako Jachie Training Complex to inspect the progress of the ongoing work.

During the visit, he also instructed architects to assess the abandoned Kotoko buildings at the training grounds, which had been neglected since 2013. The assessment is set to commence on Monday, July 24.

Furthermore, Asante Kotoko SC has re-appointed Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum as the Head Coach to lead the club in the forthcoming season.

Yeboah expressed that it is the first time he has witnessed a CEO leaving Asante Kotoko without leaving behind any debts.

The commendation comes after the club’s life patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, disclosed during a review meeting at Menhyia that the team has some profit in receivables yet to be earned.

“Meaning if the receivables are retrieved, then it means they did not incur debt…unless they don’t get the receivables, that is when you can count it as debt,” Dan Kwaku Yeboah said on Peace FM.

“He has done very well. The first time a CEO is leaving the club with profit, I’ve never heard of it before.

“All would hear is they will mention some exorbitant amount and claim, ‘Kotoko owes me’. He has done well,” he added.

Nana Yaw Amponsah was appointed as the club’s CEO in 2020 on a three-year contract. His contract ran out in July 2023.

During his tenure, the club secured numerous sponsorship deals as well as other significant partnerships to fund the club.

Otumfuo while reading the management’s report, disclosed that the club has a debt of GHC 3 million, which was accrued during the final months of Nana Yaw Amponsah’s administration.

“The current debt is from hotel expenses, players’ salaries, and wages – which have been accrued also from the last two months, adding June and July. So we have this debt to clear, before also finding a way around player recruitment,” Otumfuo said.

However, the King is resolute in his determination to elevate it into a facility that befits one of the top football clubs in Africa. His resolve to take action was evident during his visit to the complex on a Saturday.

  • The only institution embarrassing me is Kotoko – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the revered king, and owner of Asante Kotoko, has voiced his concern and disappointment with the current state of the club during an important meeting held on Friday at the Manhyia Palace.

The meeting, attended by supporters and former players, aimed to address the club’s situation following the conclusion of the Dr Kwame Kyei-led board’s three-year mandate.

At the gathering, various pressing issues were discussed, and crucial information was revealed, including the club’s staggering debt, which stands at over GH¢3 million.

The Asantehene expressed his dissatisfaction with the direction in which the club is heading, a sentiment that was acknowledged and shared by those present at the meeting.

Kotoko, once hailed as one of the biggest clubs in Africa, now faces challenges in competing on the domestic front, having gone trophyless last season.

Additionally, the club has not won an African title in four decades, a far cry from their dominant performances in the CAF Champions League during the 1970s and 1980s.

The Asantehene’s concerns about Kotoko’s current status highlight the need for a renewed approach and strategic planning to reclaim the club’s former glory.

The meeting at the Manhyia Palace served as a pivotal moment in charting a new course for Kotoko, as supporters and stakeholders acknowledged the need for change and improvement.

  • Kwasi Appiah, allegedly to be appointed as new Kotoko coach by Otumfuo

Kwasi Appiah, allegedly to be appointed as new Kotoko coach by Otumfuo

There has been much speculation regarding the composition of a new board and management for Kumasi Asante Kotoko following the dissolution of the previous leadership by the club’s patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

While initial reports suggested that a completely new board would be formed, recent credible sources indicate that some members from the dissolved board and management may be included in the new setup.

According to a report by Nhyira FM, it is likely that Kwame Kyei will retain his position as the executive board chairman of the club.

Furthermore, it is reported that Kwame Kyei favors Frederick Acheampong, a member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, to be appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the club.

However, it should be noted that these reports are subject to change as Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is still finalizing the list of the new board, who will then select their own management committee.

It is also believed that former Ghana coach, Kwasi Appiah will be the next head coach of the club as he has already held talks with Otumfuo on the move.

Despite not being his appointment, Kwame Kyei is believed to be open to the appointment of Kwasi Appiah and has communicated that to Manhyia.

Another member of the old hierarchy who is likely to retain her role is Akosua Dentaa Amonteng as the International Relations Manager of the club.

Though there has been no mention of the number of appointees, it is believed that it will take the same shape as the previous one.

The 12-member board of Asante Kotoko which was constituted by the Manhyia Palace in May 2020 has ended its three-year mandate, winning only the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League during their tenure.

The board comprised Dr. Kwame Kyei, as Board Chairman; Mr. Jude Arthur- Vice Chairman, Kwadwo Boateng Gyamfi, Kwasi Osei Ofori, Kwamena Mensah, Miss Evelyn Nsiah Asare, Mr. Kofi Amoah Abban, Mr Martin Osei Kwaku Brobbey.

The rest are; Mr. James Osei Brown, Mr. Kofi Amoah Abban, MD of Rickworld Oil Group, Mr. Martin Osei Kwaku Brobbey, CEO of Lexta Ghana Limited, Mr. James Osei Brown, CEO of Joshob Construction Company, Nana Ankobeahene of Asanteman – Baffour Kwame Kusi, Alhaji Lamin and Joseph Yaw Adu.

The Asante Kotoko management led by Nana Yaw Amponsah of which Akosua Dentaa Amoateng was also dissolved.

In the 2022/2023 season, Kumasi Asante Kotoko finished fourth with 52points.

Manhyia provides video evidence showing destooled Antoahene defied Otumfuo’s authority

On May 29, 2023, Asantehene Nana Otumfuo Osei Tutu, during a sitting of the Asanteman Traditional Council, ordered the destoolment of the Chief of Antoa, Nana Owusu Agyeman I.

This decision came after a tribunal of the Council, chaired by the Asantehene, found the 96-year-old chief guilty of sidestepping the consent and authority of Otumfuo by delegating his position to his nephew. This action was deemed a clear violation of customary procedure, leading Otumfuo to issue a decree for his destoolment as Antoahene.

Approximately three weeks after the destoolment of Nana Owusu Agyeman I, Royal Palace Multimedia, the official media outlet of Manhyia Palace, has shared video evidence of the deposed Antoahene challenging Otumfuo’s authority during a meeting with his elders and advisors.

The video shows Nana Owusu Agyeman I seated with his elders at the Antoa Palace, capturing a moment of heated confrontation between the chief and his linguist regarding the decision to delegate his power to his nephew.

The chief linguist expressed concern about Nana Owusu Agyeman’s refusal to seek Otumfuo’s approval before proceeding with his intended action. “Respectfully, I am your linguist, and by custom, I will be called to answer if you falter. So, I need to prompt you,” the linguist stated.

The chief responded, asserting his right to delegate his power to someone. “I will be there to answer for myself. I have the right to delegate my power to someone. Don’t I have the right?” he retorted.

Another elder chimed in, emphasizing the importance of doing the right thing to avoid incurring the wrath of Otumfuo’s palace. However, Nana Owusu Agyeman I maintained his position, insisting on disregarding the consequences.

The linguist further pointed out that Nana Owusu Agyeman I was appointed by Otumfuo and, therefore, should not make such decisions without his blessing. “I plead to ask if you are fully aware that Asantehene gave you the opportunity to sit here as Antoahene?” he queried.

“I was there before Asantehene came. I was here before Asantehene came; I brought him,” the chief insisted.

Following Otumfuo’s ruling, official rites for the destoolment of Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman were immediately set into motion in the town of Antoa.

Nana Owusu Agyeman had served as the chief of Antoa for over two decades prior to his destoolment.

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace during a courtesy call paid on him by the Chieftaincy Minister, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, the Asantehene expressed optimism about helping to resolve the recurring conflict in the area.

“I have so far started engaging all the feuding factions in relation to the Bawku conflict. I have also been listening to all the parties as part of the process to get the matter resolved. I’ve also been speaking to key stakeholders involved, and they have furnished me with the necessary documentation.

“So once we keep interrogating all parties involved, we will be able to bring finality to the issue. Otumfuo reportedly destools another sub-chief

The King of the Ashanti Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Nana Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reportedly destooled the chief of Ejisu Kwaso, Nana Nketia Boampon.

According to multiple reports, the destoolment of Nana Nketia was ordered by Otumfuo during a sitting of the Asanteman Traditional Council tribunal on Thursday, June 8, 2023.

The appearance of Kwasohene at the tribunal is said to be on the back of an alleged payment of GHC120,000.00 made to him by one Mr Gyimah, a royal at Kwaso who had shown interest in a vacant Dikro Stool at Kwaso.

The amount is said to have been the initial payment of GHC300,000.00 agreed upon between Nana Boampon and the said Mr Gyimah for the vacant stool.

Called before the Asantehene, the Kwasohene is said to have committed the inexcusable act of perjury by earlier disavowing the allegation and later admitting to taking the said amount following intense interrogation.

He is also alleged to have engaged in the multiple sale of lands.

His removal as chief of Kwaso was immediately ordered by the Asantehene.

The destoolment of Kwasohene comes a few days after the Asantehene ordered the destoolment of the chief of Antoa, Nana Owusu Agyeman I.

According to multiple palace sources, the Asantehene ruled against the 96-year-old and ordered his destoolment as the chief of Antoa during a judicial hearing on Monday, May 29, 2023, at the Manhyia Palace.

Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman, who had held the position of Antoahene for over two decades, is reported to have violated customary procedures by appointing his nephew to take over his reign while he is still alive.

After being confronted by his kinsmen and elders who suggested that he should have sought the permission of the King before taking such action, he allegedly denigrated the Asantehene.

Following Otumfuo’s ruling on Monday evening, official rites for the destoolment of Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman were immediately set into motion in the town of Antoa.

The chief is also alleged to have been charged with various improper acts, including the alleged multiple sale of lands.

  • Kumasi: 2023 Green Ghana Day launched by Otumfuo

Kumasi: 2023 Green Ghana Day launched by Otumfuo

The 2023 Green Ghana Day has been officially launched in Kumasi by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The event, scheduled for June 9, 2023, aims to encourage all Ghanaians and residents to actively participate in the national tree planting initiative.

He said the Green Ghana Day presents an opportunity to show patriotism, exhibit our commitment to the protection of our forest resources, and to demonstrate our resolve to leave our children with a richer and greener Ghana.

The Asantehene lauded the government for initiating the Green Ghana Project. He underscored the importance of trees to environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and the survival of the planet.

He said it was because these benefits that he committed to plant some 2.5 million trees towards the protection of Lake Bosomtwe, in the Ashanti Region.

The Green Ghana Day was first launched by Government in 2021, under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, as part of an aggressive afforestation and reforestation agenda, to restore the lost forest cover of the country.

The maiden edition targeted to plant five million (5,000,000) trees, but over seven million (7,000,000) trees were planted. Last year, over twenty-six million (26,000,000) trees were planted, exceeding the target of twenty million (20,000,000).

The Asantehene bemoaned the wanton destruction of forests due to illegal mining and illegal logging. He said chief and members of the local communities cannot feign ignorance about those involved in this destruction.
He promised to drive around the Ashanti Region and call all chiefs whose lands have been degraded to come and answer.

“Government cannot do it alone. We must all get involved and support Government to come to grips with these matters,” Otumfuo said.

On his part, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, said over years, there has not been any concerted effort to restore our lost forest cover.

He said between 2010 and 2015 alone, the country lost one hundred and sixty thousand, two hundred and ten hectares (160,210 ha) of forest. But between 1963 and 2016, only one hundred and fifty-seven thousand, three hundred hectares (157,300 ha) of forest was cultivated.

The Minister said even though government has, since 2017, been taking several measures to restore our lost forest cover, the Green Ghana Project was necessary to create enhanced national awareness of the necessity for collective action towards restoration of degraded landscapes in the country, inculcate values of planting and nurturing of trees in our citizens, particularly among the younger generation, mitigate climate change and beautify communities and the environment.

He thanked all those who have supported the Programme for the past two years and reiterated the call for all residents in the country to come out in their numbers to support the tree planting exercise on June 9, 2023.

Speaking at the launch of the third edition of the Green Ghana Day, the chief executive officer of the Forestry Commission, John Allotey said, for the past two years, Ashanti Region has been planting the most trees on Green Ghana Days.

He said over eighty-one percent of the trees planted in 2021 have survived while seventy-two percent (72%) of the those planted last year have survived.

The event was also attended by the Chairman of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Council as well as the Vice Chancellor of the University.

  • Asantehene obtains scholarships for Ghanaians

    Asantehene obtains scholarships for Ghanaians

Ghanaian students have been granted a scholarship opportunity to attend the renowned University of Memphis in Tennessee, USA, thanks to the efforts of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Under the deal, qualified Ghanaian students will travel to Memphis University to undertake their undergraduate, master’s and PhD.

Up to 70 per cent of the opportunity is reserved for students who will undertake courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The Ghana Scholarship Secretariat and the authorities of the University of Memphis last week signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect at the school, sealing the deal that spells out the modalities for the implementation of the scholarship.

    Special

Briefing the Daily Graphic upon his return from the USA, the Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, noted that the Asantehene last year, as a special guest to the famed Memphis in May Festival, made a request for scholarship for Ghanaian students.

He said although the initial target was for only students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Asantehene later called for its expansion to cover more Ghanaian students.

“So a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat and the University of Memphis which will allow Ghanaian students to undertake their undergraduate, master’s and PhD at the university. This deal, I must confess, is a blessing for Ghanaians students,” he said.

Dr Agyemang said because the city of Memphis was home to some global brands, the secretariat was working out the possibility for Ghanaian students who got the opportunity to study at the university to undertake their internship there in those industries in a bid to ‘use one stone to kill two birds’.

“It is important to underscore that the city of Memphis is the headquarters of so many globally acclaimed companies such as Fed Ex, Autozone, Sedgwick Jone Incorporated, International Paper, Baptist Memorial Healthcare, First Horizon National Incorporated (NYSE: FHN) and Mueller Industries,” Dr Agyemang said.

“What this means is that academics and industry will gradually be bridged as these companies will provide essential internship programmes for Ghanaian students. Discussions between these companies and the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat have started,” he added.

He said this formed part of the nation’s drive to create the creative, innovative, knowledgeable and experienced human resource that would lead the charge in accelerating the industrialisation agenda to position the nation for accelerated development.

Asked about when Ghanaians students would be able to fly to Memphis to start their studies under this agreement, Dr Agyemang said very soon the opportunity would be advertised for prospective students to apply and those who made it would commence their studies at the Memphis University from September 2023.

Dr Agyemang commended the Asantehene for brokering such a crucial deal for Ghanaian students, particularly for those into the area of STEM, adding that “Otumfuo has shown leadership and demonstrated how he values education. This scholarship is not for just Asanteman but Ghana as a whole”.

“I must also say we are grateful to the former Minister of Education, now Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for his interest in this scholarship and the necessary inputs he provided us to make it successful,” he said.

After the MoU, the Ghanaian delegation, led by Dr Agyemang, toured the university to inspect lecture theatres, laboratories, hostels and other facilities.

The Ghanaian entourage also included the Head of International Relations & Partnerships, Richard Gyamfi; the Head of Treasury, Ghana Embassy, Washington D.C., Janet Koranteng, and a member of the Scholarship Review Committee, Nana Owiredu Wadie.

The University of Memphis was represented by the Interim Provost, Dr Abby L. Parril;  the Executive Vice -President and Chief Operating & Financial Officer, Raaj Kurapati; the Vice Provost, and International Affairs, Dr Balaji Krishnan, and the Executive Director, Centre for International Education Services, Rebecca Laumann.

  • This why Asanteman’s flag was featured on King Charles III’s coronation flyer

This why Asanteman’s flag was featured on King Charles III’s coronation flyer

The reason behind why the Asanteman’s flag was featured on King Charles III’s coronation flyer has been explained by an historian.

Professor Sarfo Kantanka in an interview with the media explained that the Asantehene was invited in his capacity as leader of Asanteman and not as a representative of the Ghana government.

He explained that officially, Ghana was represented by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo “while the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was invited as the King of the Asante Kingdom, making it impossible to use the Ghana flag to represent the kingdom,” an Opemsuo Radio report noted.

Social media chatter ensued over the weekend when an unofficial coronation flyer posted on Twitter showed the Otumfuo and his wife Lady Julia as part of royals invited to the event at Westminster Abbey.

Whiles all the other monarchs have respective flags of their countries under their portraits, Otumfuo and Lady Julia had the Asanteman flag under their photos.

So, what was the disagreement about?

At the heart of the back and forth that has since ensued is why the Ghana flag was not used with those demanding so, insisting that Asanteman is within Ghana and the Otumfuo is Ghanaian.

Those against the move are of the view that the Asantehene was invited in his capacity as leader of the Ashanti Kingdom which has strong relations with the British monarchy.

What you need to know: The Asanteman flag

The Asantes (Asante Region/Asante Kingdom) are the only people in Ghana with an official national flag, a symbol of authority which they call the Asanteman Flag.

The flag of the Ashanti Region was adopted by the Ashanti kingdom’s Emperor Asantehene Prempeh II in 1935.

It is based on the Ashanti absolute monarchy throne, the Golden Stool, which has been Ashanti’s symbol of unity and soul since 1701, the early-eighteenth century AD, upon the foundation of the Ashanti Empire.

Yellow, black, and green are the colours that signify the Ashanti flag.

All the elements in the Flag have a meaning, and they have been explained below:

    1. The yellow part of the flag represents the riches/wealth of Asanteman.

    2. The Black part of the flag represents the symbolic image of the Blackman concerning the Asante Nation and the courage of the Asante Nation in facing the challenges of warfare.

    3. The Green colour, represents the refreshingly greener vegetation cover in the forest areas of Asanteman.

    4. The symbol in the Black at the centre of the flag is called “Gyemirekutu KYƐ” (Hat) which is made up of animal parts coated with gold-coloured paintings: Elephant Tail, Ɔwam ti (Hornbill Head), The Skin Covering the Elephant Kneebone, The Feathers of the Hornbill, Adwera (PortulacaOleracea Leafs).

Also, the flag is beautifully positioned on the hood emblem on the bonnet of the 80-year-old Rolls Royce of the Asantehene.
