  • Ghana is developing a clean cooking strategy to open industry – Second Lady

Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, says Ghana is developing a clean cooking strategy and an investment prospectus to open the industry for more business opportunities.

She said the strategy would also set up the framework for the promotion and development of effective clean cooking solutions.

The Second Lady said this during the Post-Conference Ghana Day of the Clean Cooking Forum 2022 dubbed: “Increasing Access to Clean Cooking Solutions.”

The forum sought to allow stakeholders and see whether Ghana was achieving the global target with regard to SDG 7, which calls for affordable and clean cooking.

Ghana is said to have made some significant progress in promoting clean cooking where about 37 per cent of the population uses Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and in the area of biomass cookstoves, Government through the Energy Commission had been distributing three million stoves.

Mrs Bawumia said: “Clean cooking is an urgent development issue which has significant benefits for public health, policy generation, local environment and climate.”

“Achieving clean cooking solution solutions require a behavioural change to build the current and next generation. We need to challenge ourselves to break attitudinal and social barriers to achieve them,” she added.

The Second Lady called not only for the adoption of technology in preparing indigenous Ghanaian dishes but the need to input energy technologies and solutions into the school curriculum.

She said the Sustainable Development Goal 7 and Universal Access to Clean Cooking were imperative for Ghana’s success stories of energy transmission.

She said it took Ghana 30 years to get 37 per cent of its population to use LPG and called for the collaboration of stakeholders to bring the needed strategy that would help achieve universal access to clean energy by 2030.

A statement from Mr Sameer Shukla, a Representative from the World Bank, said, several billions of dollars had been lost in terms of health, vegetation and forest due to people not having clean cooking.

He said Ghana had seen a significant reduction of 75 per cent of the population to 50 per cent, using biomass energy largely due to LPG usage.

He urged that prices and subsidies of LPG and other clean technologies be critically looked at as to get the entire population moving towards clean cooking solutions.

Mr Oscar Amonoo-Neiser, Executive Secretary, Energy Commission, said the indiscriminate cutting of trees for wood fuel, firewood and charcoal had led to air pollution, causing some deaths.

He said standards and regulations on biomass cookstoves had been developed and the regulations were in Parliament and would be passed when the lawmakers were back from recess.

Mr Amonoo-Neiser said the Commission was also developing regulations for the wood fuel sector to formalise the sector and maximise value along its value chain; notably production, transportation, packaging, sales and marketing.

That, he said, was all part of efforts geared towards achieving Universal Access to Clean Cooking by 2030.

  • Energy Ministry pushes for investment in clean cooking industry

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the energy minister, has revealed that the ministry is creating a National Clean Cooking Strategy and Investment Prospectus to advance the sector.

The World Bank-backed initiative is anticipated to be finished and deployed by the end of this year.

According to the World Bank, the lack of access to clean cooking is one of the reasons why “16,000 people die prematurely from air pollution every year” in Ghana.
Furthermore, according to Sustainable Energy for All, it might take the nation 50 years to completely switch from using wood and charcoal to clean fuels.

Speaking at the opening plenary of the 2022 Global Clean Cooking Forum held in Accra, the minister said his outfit is also partnering with other leading stakeholders to expand the clean cooking market in the country and scale-up access.

He added that such pragmatic interventions will keep the clean cooking industry on track for investment, scaling and commercialising.

“It is my earnest hope that these documents will be completed and launched by the end of the year. The Ministry of Energy is central to the development of a vibrant and sustainable clean cooking sector in Ghana,” he said.

The Global Clean Cooking Forum allows for deliberation on key political and technological counter-measures to curb the environmental and socio-economic threats of over reliance and uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources, especially woody biomass, for cooking while increasing access in line with national, regional, and global commitments.

“We need effective coordination and transparent accounting systems that are internationally acceptable to unlock the enormous investment and financing opportunities available for the clean cooking sector,” the minister told the global participants.

He also reiterated government’s commitment to distribute 3 million improved cookstoves by 2030 under the Carbon-for-Stove project, the largest clean cooking intervention in the ECOWAS region.

For her part, the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, who doubles as a Global Ambassador for the Clean Cooking Alliance, noted that clean cooking is an essential part of achieving the world’s challenge to move to net zero by 2050.

“Emission reductions have to go hand-in-hand with efforts to ensure clean energy access for all by 2030. It will take sound public policies, a holistic approach, and long-term commitment from all development actors.

Reducing cooking emissions is critical to reducing forest degradation, improving health, empowering women and children, protecting the environment, and helping achieve numerous other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” she added.

She said it is also important to integrate and involve women in the design and production of locally appropriate clean cooking technologies.

CEO of Clean Cooking Alliance, Dymphna van der Lans, also called for collective efforts to change the narratives through integrating and scaling up access globally.

She emphasised that providing clean energy to households is critical to achieving global climate and sustainable development goals.

  • ‘Romantic’ Samira publicly displays affection on Bawumia’s birthday

It is characteristic of Samira Bawumia, wife of the Vice President of Ghana to publicly display her emotions and appreciation for her husband on every occasion of his birthday.

    This year wasn’t any different.

The beautiful spouse of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia didn’t mince words when she described her husband as her sweetheart.

On the occasion of his 59th birthday, Samira took to her Facebook page to pay glowing tribute to her own, acknowledging his role in the lives of herself and their children and his commitment towards nation-building.

  • Ghana’s Second Lady to attend WHO meeting on energy

The Second Lady, Mrs. Samira Bawumia, is scheduled to participate in the second meeting of the High-level Coalition on Health and Energy under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The programme would take place on Friday, October 7, in Geneva to offer a platform for Coalition members to devise ways of accelerating clean cooking and electrification of healthcare facilities in different countries.

The Second Lady replicated her impactful leadership under her Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP) with significant contributions towards the adoption of the Strategic Roadmap at the Coalition’s first meeting, earning her plaudits from the Director-General of WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

In 2019, Hajia Samira was acknowledged as the first of seven individuals honoured by the Sustainable Energy for All in conjunction with Ashden.

It highlighted her efforts toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 7) to ensure access to modern, reliable, renewable and affordable energy for all by 2030.

Again, Mrs. Bawumia was made an Ambassador for the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves and joined other imminent leaders such as the late former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to work with the Alliance and its partners to raise awareness of household air pollution and encourage broader adoption of clean cooking solutions in developing countries in a bid to create cleaner environments and eradicate deaths caused by pollution from the burning of solid fuels for cooking.

The WHO estimates that over 2.4 billion people worldwide, about a third of the global population, cook using open fires or inefficient stoves fueled by kerosene, biomass (wood, animal dung and crop waste) and coal, which generates harmful household air pollution.

Household air pollution was responsible for an estimated 3.2 million deaths per year in 2020, including over 237, 000 deaths of children under the age of five.

To put it into perspective, household air pollution resulting from the inefficient use of clean fuels and technologies claims lives more than the total number of deaths from HIV/AIDs, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.

Most of these people are poor and live in low- and middle-income countries with highly skewed access to cleaner cooking alternatives.

It is in this vain that Second Lady, Hajia Samira has stepped up efforts with her not-for-profit organisation, SEHP, to address the situation.

The WHO Director-General convened the High-Level Coalition on Health and Energy in 2019 to strengthen the cooperation between health and energy sectors, increase political momentum, spur investments, mobilise public support and drive practical solutions.

Presently, the Coalition includes 12 Ministers of Health and Energy, 14 heads of international organisations (including UNICEF, GAVI, UNHCR and UNDP), and two Health and Energy Champions.

The Coalition hopes to expand its membership to execute its mandate for maximum global impact.

  • Rebecca, Samira deserve praise, not crucifixion – NPP man on salaries saga

Mr Samuel Adu Adjei, the Western North Regional Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has bewailed the reaction of Ghanaians to the recent emoluments for the country’s first and second ladies.

He said the first and second ladies have done no wrong to warrant the kind of bastardization and crucifixion from a section of the public.

Mr Adu Adjei, in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) lamented how the issue was politicised with some people trying to score political points with it.

He noted that the allowances for the first and second spouses had been in existence since the 4th republic which the Ato Dadzie report acknowledged.

In that regard, he admonished Ghanaians to be circumspect in their choice of words when contributing to the emolument and accord the necessary respect to the first and second ladies of the republic.

He commended the current first two ladies Mrs Rebecca Akufo Addo and Mrs Samira Bawumia for the bold decision to refund all allowances paid them since 2017 and charged former first lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama to follow suit.

Mr Adu Adjei described the comment of the Minority Leader, Mr Haruna Iddrisu asking the first and second ladies to refund the monies paid them with interest as unfortunate.

He noted that the NDC wanted to use the issue of Presidential spouses to seek favour from Ghanaians come 2024 but they would not be successful.

According to her, 51 percent of the country’s population are women and therefore there is a need to empower them to adequately contribute to the growth of the country.

Speaking on Asempa FM on Monday, March 9 to mark International Women’s Day, Samira Bawumia said the NPP government has put in place a lot of interventions to help empower women.

She believes the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative, for example, has helped most women in the north who are predominately farmers.

Commenting on her work as a second lady, Samira Bawumia said her NGO has so far trained over 1,400 people to be able to have the needed skills to provide for themselves.

She stated that four factories are being constructed by her NGO to support cashew production in the country, she said they have provided logistics for the locals to help them in the cashew industry.

On the funding sources for her projects and how sustainable the NGO will be after her office as the second lady, Samira Bawumia explained that they are looking at diverse sources of funding.

She explained that they are building the right networks and partnerships which will help the NGO with it works even after she exits office.

Samira Bawumia noted that the NGO will outlive her position.

She acknowledged that the position has given her a bigger platform to do more things but was quick to add that the position did not transform her because all the things she is doing now are things she is passionate about.
