  • Ethiopia restricts social media as a church feud ramps up into violence

Ethiopia restricts social media as a church feud ramps up into violence

Last month, three church leaders declared themselves archbishops, which resulted in at least 30 fatalities.

Following violent protests sparked by a split within the nation’s Orthodox Church, the Internet watchdog NetBlocks reported that access to social media platforms has been restricted in Ethiopia.

When three church officials last month professed themselves archbishops and established their own governing body, protests broke out in the Oromia region. While some protesters resisted it, others were in favour of it.

According to network data that NetBlocks had gathered, access to Facebook, Messenger, TikTok, and Telegram has been severely constrained.

The tweet came hours after the church said at least 30 people have been killed in the protests since February 4.

The church’s statement called for demonstrations on Sunday against the new governing body as it accused the Ethiopian government of “meddling” in the church’s internal affairs after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed asked his ministers to stay out of the dispute.

The Ethiopian state has traditionally maintained close ties to the Orthodox Church, to which more than 40 percent of the population belongs.

Government spokesperson Legesse Tulu did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday. The government said in a statement on Thursday that the upcoming protest was banned to prevent violence.

Ethiopian authorities have previously shut down or restricted access to the internet during periods of political unrest, including in response to protests in 2020 that followed the killing of a popular singer from Oromia.

Internet and phone communications were also shut down in the northern region of Tigray for most of a two-year war that ended in a ceasefire in November.

The Orthodox Church insisted Sunday’s protest would go ahead and said the government’s ban constituted “a declaration to destroy the church once and for all”.

Oromia, home to Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group, the Oromo, has experienced violent conflict for many years, part of wider unrest in Ethiopia, a multiethnic country where power has long been contested between federal and regional authorities.

Ghana had a 53% internet penetration rate in January 2022 – report

At the beginning of 2022, Ghana’s efforts to improve internet penetration had succeeded in reaching 53 percent of the country’s entire population, which represented a rise of nearly 16.99 million internet users during that time.

The number of internet users in Ghana increased by 350,000 (+2.1 percent) between 2021 and 2022, according to the Digital 2023 Global Overview Report.

Despite the growth, the research indicated that at the start of 2022, 15.07 million Ghanaians lacked access to or usage of the internet.

Despite a population of 32.06 million in Ghana as of January 2022, this constituted 47.0 percent of the country’s population who lacked access.

It outlined that, “issues relating to COVID-19 continue to impact research into internet adoption, so actual internet user figures may be higher than the published numbers suggest”.

Meanwhile, on the social media front, Ghanaian user activity reached 8.80 million in January 2022.

This was equivalent 27.4 percent of the total population at the beginning of 2022.

The Digital 2023 Global Overview Report however noted that the figure for social media users may not necessarily represent unique individuals that use various platforms.

American woman apologizes to Ghanaians after backlash from Nana Aba, others over her experience in Ghana

Jessie Clark Funk, the American woman whose viral video about her experiences in Ghana riled Ghanaians has apologized for her statements in the video.

Jessie Clark came under sustained attacks from Ghanaians after a video of her detailing her experiences in Ghana was posted on Instagram and subsequently across other platforms.

In the video, she referred to Ghanaians as poverty-stricken, hungry and living in filth.

Led by broadcaster Nana Aba Anamoah, social media users took her to the cleaners questioning her account of the state of Ghana.

In an apology via her Instagram handle, Jessie Clark Funk who is believed to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint explained that her words have been taken out of context.

She stated that she has been to the country twice, once with her daughter and has huge admiration for Ghana.

She claims to have learned a lot from the Ghanaian culture and will at no point run it down.

“A video I made talking about my experience in Ghanaian was taken completely out of the context and there are many upset people from Ghana which breaks my heart because I love and respect the people of Ghana and their beautiful country so much.

“I have been there twice, once with my daughter. We learned so much from their amazing culture and deep wisdom. I cherish my experience there and I’m sorry that something I said didn’t reflect my love for your country. I sincerely ask for forgiveness,” she said.

Her apology was shared by Nana Aba Anamoah who took exception to her earlier description of Ghana and for that matter Ghanaians.

Nana Aba’s clapback read: “Here you are, @jessieclarkfunk. I knew I’d find you. Those lies you spewed about Ghana made you look less intelligent. That we hate the Mormons? Madam, are you okay? No one resents your temple. The area your temple (the church of Latter-Day Saints) stands in Accra (Ridge) is one of the richest, most peaceful and prestine neighborhoods. “

“I’ll forgive your imbecilic comments about the poverty stricken and hungry people you claim you saw around that temple and assume you just wanted to appear relevant. You looked pathetic instead.”

Nana Aba also took time to educate her on the realities of living in Ghana.

“Indeed, we do have poor people here just as your country does too. There are so many Americans who call cars, shacks, tents and boxes their homes. It’s 2023. Grow up. It’s time to unlearn the truckload of lies you’ve been fed by some of the painfully lazy media platforms in your country about Africa.”

She added, “ I’m willing to help you speak sensibly next time about a country that’s been kind to your ilk, church and any other organisation from your country. To be honest, they’d be shocked to the marrow to hear you speak this way about Ghanaians. You lot need to stop making Africa a victim of your incredibly dumb agenda,” parts of her post on Instagram read.

Netizens have reacted to a video of popular Ghanaian ‘Tik Tokers’, Felicia Osei and Hajia Bintu, captured in a tense atmosphere while sitting next to each other at an event.

Although it is unclear whether there is a hidden feud between the two, social media users claim to have spotted friction between them during the UTV Day with the Stars.

Hajia Bintu was captured in a pensive mood with her eyes fixed on the activities carried out on stage at that particular moment.

In the case of Felicia, she felt uncomfortable in her seat and also had all her attention on the stage.

At one point, she [Felicia] was seen rolling her eyes and giving side stares at her colleague.

While some have argued that they are not engaged in any feud whatsoever, others are insisting that they can ‘smell a rat.’

“Why do I sense an awkward moment between these two? I’m sure something isn’t right,” an individual reacted to the video which is making rounds on the internet.

“I think minding one’s business is the key. Now u can’t make friends because tomorrow you might be threatened with recordings and picture evidence here and there, so now this is the new remedy oooo,” said another.

Meek Mill trends after dropping footage of video shot at Jubilee House

A trending video of American rapper Meek Mill has popped up on social media.

American rapper Meek Mill was one of the guests at the Afro Nation concert in Ghana over the Christmas holidays.

A rough riding powerbike session, claims of his phone having been pickpocket at an event, fighting off hoodlums before getting on stage to perform and meeting with the president at Jubilee House, were some major highlights of his time in Accra.

Meek Mill is back in the United States but his name is back in the trends here in Ghana.

On late Sunday, January 8, 2023; the rapper posted an Instagram reel announcing that he was set to release a new track.

It turns out that portions of the said video were shot in and around the Jubilee House during his visit.

Meek Mill is sighted in different places at the presidency, from the frontage, through the main corridors, in the main conference hall – at a point positioned behind the presidential lectern – and later in a sitting area rapping.

Social media users are incensed about what they describe as near desecration of the presidency, citing moral and security grounds.

Major influencers on Twitter especially have attracted comments that are largely critical of government for allowing such sensitive areas to be filmed for a music video.

It must be noted that a small portion of the commenters are justifying it, stating that it is not too much of a big deal.

  • Woman deceives and defrauds friend for 12 years by posing as her online boyfriend

A Chinese woman has been arrested for allegedly pretending to be a man on social media and tricking her own friend into falling in love with her and sending her money.

Shanghai police recently announced that it had cracked one of the most bizarre online romance scams ever. The victim, a middle-aged woman, had been scammed for 12 years by someone posing as a well-known TV news anchor on social media and defrauded around 2 million yuan ($290,000) over that period of time. The craziest part of the story is that the scammer turned out to be a good female friend of the victim who had come up with the plan as payback for something the victim’s mother had said when they were very young.

The fraudster, identified only as Ms. Yu, admitted her guilt and told investigators that everything had started 12 years ago. She and the victim, Ms. Li, had been friends for a very long time, and their parents also knew each other. One day, Li’s mother jokingly told Li that she would have trouble finding a husband because she wasn’t very pretty and her family didn’t have too good a financial situation.

It was a cruel thing to say to a young girl, and Yu really took it to heart. The more she thought about what the woman had said, the more she wanted to take revenge, so she came up with a plan. If she would find it hard to find love, then so would her friend Li…

Years after being insulted by her friend’s mother, Ms. Yu approached the same woman to brag about being friends with a well-known TV news anchor who just happened to be single and in search of a suitable wife. As expected, the woman pleaded with her to match him up with her daughter, and Yu’s plan was set in motion.

The conniving woman started creating fake social media profiles of the news anchor and approached Ms. Li pretending to be this charming, successful man. She knew her friend better than almost anyone else, what she liked and didn’t like, her passions, her romantic expectations, so they hit it off. The only problem was keeping the relationship online.

Every time Ms. Li asked to meet her online boyfriend in person, he would find an excuse. He was either too busy with work, away on business, sick, or simply too tired to meet her. But he continued to charm her and declare his love, which was apparently enough to keep Li interested.

The defrauding wasn’t originally part of Yu’s plan, but by 2018 she had fallen on hard times and was in desperate need of money. Knowing that her friend was head-over-heeld about the online persona she had created, he started asking her for financial assistance, inventing all kinds of pretexts. Once she got Li to pay up once, she was hooked and continued to use her charms to bleed her dry.

Despite getting on her feet financially, Yu continued to ask her friend for money, pleading, lying, and even threatening to break off the relationship whenever Li asked too many questions or appeared reluctant to cough up the money. Whenever her friend complained about the situation, she always encouraged her to do whatever it took for love, claiming that the news anchor was worth it.

Earlier this year, after Li spent all her savings and started racking up debt, things became more complicated for Yu. Her friend came to her asking for help with contacting the news anchor, finally expressing concerns that something was wrong. Li wanted to confront him and ask for all the money back, and despite Yu’s best efforts to dissuade her she had made up her mind.

Sensing that her scam was finally at an end, Yu told her friend everything, how she had lied about knowing the news anchor, created the fake profiles, and how she defrauded her over several years. It’s unclear if she hoped that her friend wouldn’t go to the police, or if she just wanted to see the look on her face when she learned the truth.

Ms. Yu was arrested after her friend filed a complaint, and an investigation, in this case, is still ongoing. The whole story sounds like the plot of a movie, and there are some details that don’t add up, like how the victim sent 2 million yuan to someone she had never actually met, or how she went 12 years without actually meeting her online boyfriend. Still, most of the details come from the Shanghai police department, so there must be some truth to it…

  • Kate Winslet: Parents feel “utterly powerless” over children’s social media use

The government should make social media firms enforce age limits to help tackle their impact on children’s mental health, actress Kate Winslet has said.

Speaking to the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, she said parents feel “utterly powerless” about how to help their children navigate social media.

Winslet said security checks could be more rigorous and those in power “should step up” to protect children.

She was speaking ahead of the launch of her new Channel 4 film I Am Ruth.

The feature-length drama sees Winslet playing opposite her real-life daughter Mia Threapleton as the mother of a teenager whose mental health begins to suffer as she becomes increasingly consumed by the pressures of social media.

Winslet said the decision to focus on children’s mental health followed a conversation with the film’s creator Dominic Savage about how parents can help “when they can clearly see there’s a problem”.

But she said that the drama had to be about more than a child obsessed with their phone.

It had to cover “what’s actually going on with that phone, how it impacts on their self-esteem, how it impacts on eating habits, their mental state in terms of thinking about things like self-harm,” Winslet said.

In the two-hour drama, to be shown on Channel 4 on Thursday 8 December, Winslet plays Ruth who is a single mother of two, including 17-year-old Freya.

The film shows Freya becoming less communicative and falling behind at school as she retreats further into herself as her relationship with social media becomes increasingly destructive.

The world of social media is “frightening to parents because we don’t really know what’s there”, Winslet said.

“We don’t know really what’s going on in their friendship groups anymore because so much of it is actually built on phones, inside phones.

“This world that you can burrow deeper and deeper into it, and it becomes darker and trickier and much, much harder for children to navigate.

“I think because people, young children, are having phones at a much earlier age, they’re able to access things that emotionally they’re just not equipped or sophisticated enough to know how to process.”

Kate Winslet and Mia Threapleton in I Am Ruth
IMAGE SOURCE,JOSS BARRETT /ME+YOU PRODUCTIONS/CHANNEL 4 Image caption, Mia Threapleton, Winslet’s real-life daughter, plays teenager Freya

Asked whether she thought there should be more legal regulation of social media, Winslet said she struggled with social media and its impact on teenage mental health.

“I do wish that our government would crack down on it. I do wish that there would be certain platforms that were banned before a certain age. I wish that security checks would be much more rigorous,” she said.

She said there should be “more protection and accountability” because parents “are left flailing”.

“I just think that the people who know that they could do better to protect our children should just be doing that. Whoever those people are, they know who they are, they should just step up and do better,” she said.

Winslet’s comment come as the government is accused of watering down legislation aimed at regulating internet content.

In the past week, ministers have dropped plans from the Online Safety Bill which would require technology firms to take down legal but harmful material.

Ian Russell, the father of teenager Molly Russell, who ended her life after viewing suicide and self-harm content online, said the bill had been watered down and the decision might have been made for political reasons to help it pass more quickly.

In a statement, Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan told BBC News that “unregulated social media is hurting our children and it must end”.

She added that the “strengthened Online Safety Bill” she is bringing back to Parliament “will allow parents to see and act on the dangers sites pose to young people”.

“Young people will be safeguarded, criminality stamped out and adults given control over what they see and engage with online,” Ms Donelan said.

  • ‘No World Cup victory’ – Akufo-Addo’s 2014 tweet resurfaces after Black Stars exit

In the era of tweets being coughed up under the mantra of ‘The internet doesn’t forget,’ politicians are often the subject of social media posts that literally slap them in the face.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is facing one such social media post in the wake of the Black Stars exit from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Otto Addo-led team fell 2 – 0 to Uruguay in a must-win fixture on December 2, 2022; which result meant the two teams exited the tournament with Portugal and South Korea advancing.

A 2014 tweet by the president has resurfaced as people mock its content relative to recent happenings in the country.

It reads: “No water, no electricity, no petrol, no jobs, no mercy, no World Cup cictory! #Ghana”

The president had urged the team to take revenge on the Uruguayans after a 2010 incident where Luis Suarez, their captain in yesterday’s game thwarted Ghana’s prospect of making history by becoming the first African side to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Akufo-Addo has yet to comment on the outcome of the match.

In 2014 when his tweet was made, the then Asamoah Gyan-led Black Stars made a disastrous outing in Brazil when they failed to win a single match yet ‘cooked’ a global spectacle that saw dollars being flown to pay their appearance fees for fears of a boycott.

Ghana ended bottom of Group H with Portugal topping whiles South Korea finsihed second ahead of Uruguay on goal difference – both teams finished with four points apiece.

The Black Stars recorded three points from three games – losing to Portugal and Uruguay and beating South Korea. They scored five goals and conceded seven.

Coach Otto Addo has resigned his position in the post-match press conference.

    Match Report: Uruguay vs. Ghana

The Black Stars of Ghana had one task going into their final Group H fixture at the 2022 World Cup.

Win at all costs, worse case draw against Uruguay and secure passage into the Round-of-16 stage of the competition.

The match was, however, settled with three major incidents in the first half. A penalty miss by Black Stars skipper Andre Dede Ayew, when the score was goalless.

Then Giorgian de Arrascaeta’s two goals for Uruguay which came in quick sucession, consigned the Black Stars to a second World Cup defeat against the South Americans who broke hearts of Africans in 2010.

Their 2 – 0 victory over the Black Stars was, however, not enough to get them through to the next round of the tournament as South Korea beat Portugal 2-1.

With Uruguay in dire need of a third goal to progress to the next round of the World Cup, Suarez was reduced to tears as efforts to score another goal proved futile.

Portugal and South Korea advanced from Group H as Uruguay and Ghana exited the tournament after finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

  • What demands are circulating on social media?

Alongside the people gathering in the streets, a major element of protest in China inevitably takes place on social media – which is heavily censored.

But the “Great Firewall” – as the vast regime of automated and human censors is called by some – is by no means flawless, and protest posts do make it through and circulate before being restricted.

BBC News has seen examples of some images with lists of demands being sent around social media. Some of the demands include calls to:

    • Abolish pandemic monitoring measures such as mandatory mass testing and digital health codes for work and travel
    • Reverse the policy of closing schools, restaurants, shops or other businesses in the name of preventing Covid spreading
    • Correctly publicize the danger of the virus “without exaggeration or alarmist talk”
    • Apologise for “unreasonable” and “unscientific” epidemic prevention strategies
    • Investigate and prosecute local government officials, testing companies and others involved in Covid restrictions over allegations of corruption, negligence and abuse of power

A CNN Africa reporter called Larry Madowo received confirmation from the unnamed lawyer that the business had “finally agreed to talk with the laid-off Africa staff.”

In a tweet on November 22, Madowo, who has been closely following the topic, repeated that the laid-off employees “weren’t offered severance until CNN highlighted” their predicament and that they “weren’t allowed to discuss their separation conditions until” CNN article was aired.

Africa office closed down four days after opening

The Africa office was closed four days after employees who had over the last year been working remotely converged at the Africa Headquarters located in Ghana.

They initiated legal action against the new owner of the platform, Elon Musk, over discrimination and the imbalance in the severance pay they were offered compared to others who were laid off in the United States and Europe upon his takeover.

Madowo revealed the contents of their termination emails in his earlier reports, which read in part: “The company is reorganizing its operations as a result of a need to reduce costs. It is with regret that we’re writing to inform you that your employment is terminating as a result of this exercise.

“Your last day of employment will be 4th December 2022. You will be placed on garden leave until your termination date,” the November 4 letter read.

What Madowo said about threat to sue:

The staff hired a lawyer who was on the verge of suing the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, over this matter. They also reported Twitter to the Chief Labour Officer in Ghana over breaches in the way their appointments were terminated.

“It is clear that Twitter, under Elon Musk, is either deliberately or recklessly flouting the laws of Ghana, is operating in bad faith and in a manner that seeks to silence and intimidate former employees into accepting any terms unilaterally thrown at them.

“Without pressure from higher authorities, they are clearly not willing to provide a fair or just package in order to minimize the hardship of this takeover and the resulting loss of jobs on their workforce in Africa.”

  • #RIPTwitter trends after mass resignation hit Twitter

Social media giant, Twitter is facing a new crisis at its headquarters which may result in the closing down of the company.

Earlier this week, the firm’s new owner, Elon Musk said employees had to commit to working long hours and would “need to be extremely hardcore” or leave the company.

In an email to staff, Musk said workers should agree to the pledge if they wanted to stay.

The email also stated that employees who refuse to sign the form by 5 pm Eastern on Thursday, November 17th, would be let go and would receive three months of severance pay.

The message sent to Twitter staff

“If you are sure that you want to be part of the new Twitter, please click yes on the link below,” Musk said.

However, after long hours for workers to check “yes” on a Google form accepting Elon Musk’s proposal of working “long hours at high intensity”, it seems a large number of employees have rejected his vision.

In light of this, the firm is on the verge of collapse and losing even more employees following the mass layoffs of engineers and managers who keep the firm running.

Users of the platform have taken to its blogging site to express their concerns and worries.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk is deeply concerned about how many remaining employees could leave the company.

The departures of the employees raise new questions about whether the remaining Twitter engineers will be able to reliably keep the service up and running.

Twitter no longer has communications staff, but Musk so far hasn’t publicly commented on the resignations.

  • Xandy Kamel exposes and curses woman who wrote hateful comment under her post

Ghanaian actress Xandy Kamel has lamented the unexplained hate directed at her by Ghanaians for all this year including some social media users bullying her at the slightest opportunity.

Xandy explained that constant bullying has led her to depression adding that it might lead to her death. In a recent interaction with fans, she couldn’t fathom why the masses dislike her.

“Ghanaians don’t love me. When a Nigerian loves you, it is genuine. They will wholeheartedly love you but that cannot be said of a Ghanaian. I don’t even have a fanbase. Critics go and attack me under pages created in my name. I will just die,” declared the actress.

Xandy and former wife of sports presenter, Kaninja, in the viral video also lashed out at a Ghanaian nurse who claimed to hate her.

The young woman whom Xandy identified as a nurse wrote that she hates the actress. This resulted in the actress’s decision to expose the face behind the page and also rain curses on her.

She prayed for the worst things in life to befall her critic and also wished evil in her life. According to the actress, she has come to terms with the hate a section of Ghanaians have for her but that could not stop her from clapping back at critics.

“Maamelov3, you say you hate me. Well noted, this is her face, she is a nurse. Funny enough you don’t even follow me on my page. You hate me?…I will show you where power lies. Just as a piece of charcoal is reduced to ashes after burning, so will your life be. You will experience a sudden downfall…you will suffer in life and will never know peace. Your family will come in search of me to save you. Your life will be as dark as charcoal, mark my words,” these were the words of Xandy Kamel after being subjected to cyberbullying.

  • Five big tech companies that have embarked on massive layoffs in 2022

Like most companies, technology companies this year have also been hit with the global economic crisis which many experts say is fuelled by the Russian-Ukraine war and the impact of covid 19.

This has resulted in massive layoffs across the sector with a total of 1138 layoffs at tech companies globally, affecting 182,605 people, according to TrueUps tech layoff tracker.

Below is a list of top tech giants that have announced job cuts this year or embarked on massive layoffs.

    Twitter

It didn’t take long for Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk to lay off almost half of the company’s staff. This was just a week after officially closing the acquisition process to take over the company.

“…the Nov. 4 layoffs only affected “15% of our Trust & Safety organization (as opposed to approximately 50% cuts company-wide), with our front-line moderation staff experiencing the least impact.” Twitter’s then-head of content moderation, Yoel Roth said.

These job cuts also affected the company’s only African office in Ghana’s capital, Accra. According to reports, employees were fired with the exception of one.

While these layoffs represent the biggest workforce cull Twitter has seen, it’s not the first time this year the company has sought to slim down its employee base. After initially implementing a hiring freeze, in July 2022 the company went on to lay off 30% of its talent acquisition team.

    Amazon

On Tuesday (November 15), the company notified regional authorities in California that it would lay off about 260 workers at various facilities that employ data scientists, software engineers, and other corporate workers. Those job cuts would be effective beginning on Jan. 17, 2023.

Amazon would not specify how many more layoffs may be in the works beyond the ones confirmed through California’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, also known as WARN, which requires companies to provide 60 days’ notice if they have 75 or more full-time or part-time workers. Amazon employs more than 1.5 million workers globally, primarily made up of hourly workers.

The online retail giant, like other tech and social media giants, saw sizable profits during the COVID-19 pandemic, as homebound shoppers purchased more items online. But revenue growth slowed as the worst of the pandemic eased and consumers relied less on e-commerce.

    Netflix

In June this year, Netflix announced it laid off 300 employees in the second round of job cuts after losing subscribers for the first time in more than a decade.

The cuts amounted to about 4% of the streaming giant’s workforce and mostly affected US employees. They came after the company cut 150 jobs last month.

“While we continue to invest significantly in the business, we made these adjustments so that our costs are growing in line with our slower revenue growth,” Netflix said in a statement.

Netflix said in February it had lost 200,000 subscribers globally at the start of 2022, and projected a decline of 2 million users in the upcoming quarter.

The company blamed the drop on a range of factors, including increased competition, the economy, the war in Ukraine, and the large number of people who share their accounts with non-paying households.

    Facebook

On Wednesday, November 9, the CEO of Facebook’s parent Meta, Mark Zuckerberg announced the company is laying off 11,000 people, about 13% of its workforce, as it contends with faltering revenue and broader tech industry woes.

Zuckerberg said that he had made the decision to hire aggressively, anticipating rapid growth even after the pandemic lockdowns ended.

“Unfortunately, this did not play out the way I expected,” Zuckerberg said in a statement. “Not only has online commerce returned to prior trends, but the macroeconomic downturn, increased competition, and ads signal loss have caused our revenue to be much lower than I’d expected. I got this wrong, and I take responsibility for that.”

Meta, like other social media companies, enjoyed a financial boost during the pandemic lockdown era because more people stayed home and scrolled on their phones and computers. But as the lockdowns ended and people started going outside again, revenue growth began to falter.

    Tesla

In June 2022, Elon Musk confirmed that the salaried workforce at Tesla Inc. would be cut by about 10% over the next three months, but said the overall reduction in the electric-car maker’s headcount would only be some 3.5% as hourly staff numbers are still expected to grow.

“We grew very fast on the salaried side,” Musk said in an interview with Bloomberg News Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait at the Qatar Economic Forum on Tuesday. “A year from now, I think our headcount will be higher” in salaried and hourly workers, but for now the reduction will be 3% to 3.5%, he said in a report by Bloomberg.

The comments brought more clarity to the situation with Tesla’s staffing, after Musk made varied internal and public statements about reductions over the past month.

‘Don’t Judge Me’: Eno Barony and Duncan William’s son top trends with new single on November 16 released the music video for her 2022 single ‘Don’t Judge Me’ featuring Dee Wills.

Social media users on Wednesday widely published the new tune which tackles society and how some individuals wrongly judge others based on their outward appearance and ability not to conform to what is termed as the norms.

As expected, Eno dropped some bars on the song which has garnered over 67,000 views on YouTube in less than 24 hours.

The award-winning rapper channelled her energy into calling for change with a special message from Duncan Williams’s son who gave a few seconds of delivery on the chorus.

  • People are deliberately spreading disinformation to juice the country – Oppong Nkrumah

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has cautioned against the deliberate disinformation concerning the health of the economy that is fuelling panic withdrawals and capital flights.

This situation, he said, is what is worsening the country’s fiscal problems and not government’s actions.

He stated that some persons have taken to spreading falsehoods about the economy on social media in order to create a fiscal atmosphere that would serve their parochial interests better.

“But this is a time in which you have high levels of social media activity, you have a high level of misinformation and actually you have people who are interested in disinformation, which is very different from misinformation where people put out information that is not correct, and I’ll cite you examples.

“This is the era where you have people going on social media recording voices literally scaring the market. So it’s not about the communication per se, it’s about what people are doing to deliberately juice our market in a particular way.

“You’ll notice that currently some people are on trial, have been arrested because the investigation showed how they fabricated stories on websites, then putting them on WhatsApp platforms and pushing them through to scare the market,” he said on JoyNews’ PM Express Business Edition.

He noted that while preliminary efforts had been made including blocking their malicious websites, they had gone ahead to create new ones to further their agenda.

This he says demonstrates the deliberate attempt to create an environment of uncertainty that will cause investors and the international community from regaining confidence in Ghana’s fiscal space.

“These are matters of public record, and even when those websites were shut down, they set it up on new domain platforms anew to pursue the same objective. Two people are on trial currently. So there’s a new dynamic in the marketplace which is a certain deliberate effort to disinform the public.”

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah advised that when people come across such alarmist messages, investors and the general public’s confidence in the economy should not waver as this government has time and time again proven it can revive the economy.

“But you’d also have to be careful how you respond, that that disinformation does not cause you to run ahead of yourself and start saying things that you haven’t reached a point of conclusion on.

For the ones you’ve reached a point of conclusion on, for example, no principal haircuts you’re able to say so and also make the point that this is the administration that has been working to protect people’s deposits.

“Let’s calm down, let’s have some confidence in this same market. And if we all choose to have confidence, we will not necessarily be pushing for more answers to be provided when we have not reached those points,” he said.

  • Ghana School of Law directs students to submit social media handles for monitoring

The Ghana School of Law has asked its students to provide their social media handles for monitoring.

According to the Director of the School, Yaw Oppong, this will help many students willing to be called to the bar to maintain a good character befitting the legal profession.

“Everybody will have to provide their social media handles. We are going to look at it and you will be monitored in terms of conduct. We are required by law to make recommendations. We don’t want to stampede you.

“You are going to reapply beyond the pass and submit yourselves for all legitimate checks,” Mr Oppong said during the swearing-in ceremony of the School of Law Students’ Representative Council (SRC) executives.

Thus, he has charged the students to submit themselves for the character checks before the General Legal Council’s approval.

“Once we are doing our best to ensure that as many of you as possible who want to help yourselves go beyond the stage you are, and we are succeeding, it will not compromise your good character.”

“It’s of no use if you are qualified to go to second year, and you are told that you cannot go because of bad character,” he noted.

  • ‘We will monitor your social media handles in terms of conduct’ – Law students told

The Director of the Ghana School of Law, Yaw Oppong, has directed that all social media handles of students at the school be monitored for characters befitting their profession.

This was after he directed that the students of the school submit their social media handles for monitoring, a report by myjoyonline.com said.

Yaw Oppong explained that this will help the students use their social media handles to promote ethical characters befitting of the profession they are entering.

“Everybody will have to provide their social media handles. We are going to look at it and you will be monitored in terms of conduct. We are required by law to make recommendations. We don’t want to stampede you.

“You are going to reapply beyond the pass and submit yourselves for all legitimate checks,” he said.

The Ghana School of Law director made these comments at the swearing-in ceremony of executives of the School of Law Students’ Representative Council (SRC), the report added.

Yaw Oppong urged the students to live upright lifestyles befitting their status as legal practitioners so that the General Legal Council will not be in a position to bring their characters into question one day.

“Once we are doing our best to ensure that as many of you as possible who want to help yourselves go beyond the stage you are, and we are succeeding, it will not compromise your good character.

“It’s of no use if you are qualified to go to second year, and you are told that you cannot go because of bad character,” he added.

The Ghana School of Law was established in 1958 by Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to become a centre of excellence in Africa and the world at large for professional legal training and research.

  • This is how much money Kyrie Irving loses as Nike parts ways with him

Nike has cut ties with Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving. The development comes following a controversial social media post about a book and movie containing antisemitic tropes.

In a statement, Nike said it will no longer launch Irving’s new shoe, the Kyrie 8. The shoe, said to be his eighth, was due to be released on November 8, according to ESPN.

Earlier, the Brooklyn Nets had suspended Irving for at least five games after he “stopped short of fully disavowing the documentary on two occasions,” according to Reuters. He has since apologized for promoting a project he said contained “false anti-Semitic statements.”

“To All Jewish families and Communities that are hurt and affected from my post, I am deeply sorry to have caused you pain, and I apologize,” Irving wrote on Instagram.

“I initially reacted out of emotion to being unjustly labelled [antisemitic], instead of focusing on the healing process of my Jewish Brothers and Sisters that were hurt from the hateful remarks made in the Documentary.”

However, the apology did little to stop Nike from pulling out of its partnership with him. “At Nike, we believe there is no place for hate speech and we condemn any form of antisemitism,” the Beaverton, Oregon-based company noted in a statement. “To that end, we’ve made the decision to suspend our relationship with Kyrie Irving effective immediately and will no longer launch the Kyrie 8.”

“We are deeply saddened and disappointed by the situation and its impact on everyone,” Nike said. Irving first signed a deal with Nike when he became the No 1 pick in that year’s NBA draft in 2011. According to the Guardian, he released his first signature shoe three years later and made $11m annually just from the Nike endorsement.

Irving becomes the second black celebrity in less than two weeks to lose a major shoe deal over antisemitism. Adidas cut ties with Kanye West, now known as Ye, over antisemitic tweets. It cost Ye $1.4 billion. He now has a reported net worth of $400 million and is no longer part of the billionaires’ club.

  • Relevant state agencies will chase you – Akufo Addo to speculators over ‘Haircut’

A two-minute video that went viral on social media and implied that there would be a “haircut on Government bonds” prompted a response from President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking to the country about the steps the government is taking to revive the economy, he added: “I also want to reassure all Ghanaians that no individual or institutional investor—including pension funds—in Government treasury bills or instruments will lose their money as a result of our on-going IMF negotiations.

“There will be no “haircuts”, so I urge all of you to ignore the false rumours, just as, in the banking sector clean-up, Government ensured that the 4.6 million depositors affected by the exercise did not lose their deposits”

Meanwhile, he has cautioned “those who make it a habit of publishing falsehoods, which result in panic in the system, I say to them that the relevant state agencies will act against such persons”.

  • It is not Akufo-Addo’s job to apologise to Ghanaians – Presidential Staffer

A Presidential Staffer, Dennis Miracles Aboagye has said it is not Akufo-Addo’s job to apologise to Ghanaians for the current economic crisis the country is facing.

According to him, the duty of the president is to take Ghanaians out of the economic crisis the country is facing rather than apologise.

His comment comes on the back of calls by some Ghanaians on social media who have raised concerns over Akufo-Addo’s failure to apologise to Ghanaians for the current economic crisis including IMF bailout after he vehemently spoke against it.

After his address on the economy on October 30, some social media users including ace broadcaster, Nana Aba Anamoah, raised questions after the address on Twitter with the caption “No apology. No acceptance of responsibility. Nothing, absolutely nothing!”

Speaking on the Big Issue on TV3, the host quizzed why the president did not apologise to Ghanaians after Ghana went to IMF, Miracles Aboagye responded “apology for what?”

He continued “I need to clarify this, when as speak I speak as a Ghanaian, when I say the people and you also say the people whose words are you taking? Is it not all of us. The president’s job is not to come to us and come and be crying and apologising to us. The president job is to find a way out of the situation for us”.

  • Lady tattoos her boyfriend’s face on her face

An African-American lady has gone viral on the internet after flaunting her unusual face tattoo on social media.

Some people are willing to go the extra mile to prove their love to their partners but this is beyond absurdity.

Why would any sane person tattoo his/her lover’s face on any part of his/her body – What happens if there’s a breakup?

If the lady thinks tattooing her boyfriend’s face on her bare face will keep him, then she has made a very great mistake because the guy will still cheat regardless of her tricks to pin him to herself alone.

I don’t want to believe this is a permanent tattoo but rather, a temporary tattoo that lasts around 2-3 days maximum.

If I was the tattoo artist, I would have respectfully declined and directed her to a t-shirt printer because this is absolutely ridiculous.

Well, we are in the age of clout chasing and attention seeking hence nothing is surprising at all.

I’m just wondering how she’ll get the guy’s face off her body if they break up in the future.

All the comments under the viral video suggest the lady refused to think like an adult no matured person will draw his or her lover’s face on his\her’s just to prove a point.

    Take a look at some of the reactions from shocked netizens below;

@Samanthafrea – tattoo artists gotta have some kind of rule to tell these girls that this is dumb lmao

@Iamyoursign – As a tattoo artist I try talk them out of it or try to make them get something else llf

@Kxshanell – I would be a lil scared if someone got my face tatted. Like ion even think it’d turn me on fr.

@Kunstoppable – Please tell me this is fake. Where are her parents why would the tattoo artist agree to do this.

In the late hours of Monday, October 24, a video went viral on Twitter.

In the half-minute video, a man was seen lying in distress on an inner road in an area identified by a commentator as ‘North Dzorwulu.’

The victim, a middle-aged man lies motionless in the middle of the street paved with residences on both sides as bystanders look on, some videoing the victim who lies with a bloodied face and blood oozing close by.

An unidentified man running commentary on the 33-second video is heard asking for help for the victim while exclaiming that he is not dead.

According to social media reports, the driver of the vehicle was shot causing his car to run into a ditch.

  • Farming is expensive, the youth are not lazy – Bridget Otoo

The discourse regarding the sharp increase in youth unemployment has been reinitiated by social media.
A variety of social media users believe that the current economic crisis has made youth unemployment worse.

Some internet users contend that youth unemployment is caused by laziness.
Others, on the other hand, assert that young people have a window of opportunity in farming that they should take advantage of, but they fail to do so.

Bridget Otoo, a broadcast journalist, criticized people who label young people as lazy because they don’t seem to be involved in farming in a series of tweets seen by GhanaWeb.

According to the presenter, farming is expensive, making it difficult for young people to undertake.

“Farming is expensive. Let’s be honest, it is even beginning to look like the rich people are the ones doing the farming,” she stated

“People talk about farming as if they are giving out free lands, paying for labour and the youth are refusing to do it. Even me, my dad gave me farmlands, we’ve not been able to find money to put it to use. Not having money is not equal to being lazy”, she explained.

  • Kanye West to acquire Conservative Social Media platform Parler

The artist formerly known as Kanye West is acquiring Parler, the social media platform billed as a so-called conservative alternative to other sites.

In a press release, Parliament Technologies CEO George Farmer argued that Ye was “making a groundbreaking move” with this deal.

“Parlement will be honored to help him achieve his goals,” Farmer, who is married to Candace Owens, said.

In the same press release, a Ye quote is also included, complete with similarly Fox Newsian wording.

“In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves,” Ye said.

Parler, as the Southern Poverty Law Center pointed out last January, has been criticized as “a haven for far-right extremism of all stripes.” The platform became a much-discussed facet of the larger Capitol riot investigation, with a previously published USA Today analysis showing the extent of Trump’s real-time impact on the platform in the moments leading up to the attack.

First launched in 2018, Parler quickly became the go-to social media choice for a number of far-right figures. By November 2020, per an Anti-Defamation League report at the time, those with sizable presences on the platform included Islamophobic conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer and the Proud Boys hate group.

In recent days, Ye has been met with account-restricting actions on Twitter and Instagram in response to antisemitic remarks. Elon Musk, who himself is set to acquire Twitter, later claimed to have spoken with Ye regarding his then-recent Twitter activity.

“Talked to ye today & expressed my concerns about his recent tweet, which I think he took to heart,” Musk claimed in a tweet, marking an apparent reference to Ye having previously said on the platform that he was “going death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE.”

  • I get upset when people with no light, small credit disrespect me – Sonnie Badu

Sonnie Badu has dared social media trolls to come and face him in person to tell him to his face what they say about him on social media.

According to the US-based Ghanaian gospel musician, he gets upset when people with no light at home insult him on social media whilst they have little data on their phones as well.

The outspoken Gospel minister during a radio interview said “what upsets me is, sometimes, a type and kind of people who just had a little credit on their phone, no light at home and they have the audacity to push a word, to disrespect you“.

Sharing his thoughts on how people disrespect him on social media, he continued that “then it’s like a whole host of houseflies jump on what they said on me“. According to Sonnie Badu, he wishes the trolls are brave to do it better in his face if they are not afraid than hiding behind social media.

Speaking during an interview with Hammer Nti on Pure FM, he said “I normally say if you are a brave man come and stand in front of me and say what you want to say because I’m not afraid to say that”.

However, those who are higher tinkers will always understand what I’m saying because I’m not afraid to speak my mind,” he added

“We commend the Ghana Police Service and Child Rights International (CR) for launching a manhunt for the suspect in the matter and also staking a reward claim to any individual who will be able to provide information that leads to the arrest of the individual and rescue the child,” the statement said.

The Ministry therefore appealed to the public to support the Police with any information relevant to the matter and the arrest of the man.

  • Cyber security boss: Ghana ranks third globally with active social media users

This will increase Ghanaians’ online vulnerability, according to Albert Antwi-Boasiako, interim director-general of the Cyber Security Authority.

Albert Antwi-Boasiako, acting director-general of the Cyber Security Authority, says Ghana is the third most active social media user in the world.

Appearing on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (6 October), as part of this year’s cyber security awareness month in Ghana, Antwi-Boasiako said this will make Ghanaians more vulnerable online.

“Our citizens are quite active on social media, and statistics show that we are ranked the third country with active social media presence behind Nigeria and the Philippines in the whole world.

“Averagely it’s about five hours daily in Ghana, but I wouldn’t want to look at it from the economic impact, whether it is positive or impacting on economic development,” he told the show host Benjamin Offei-Addo.

“You may be surprised, access to betting sites is one of them, also it is not very nice to say but even pornographic access is one of them,” he said.

  • I will shift your womb fuo be doing only 3 seconds – Nana Aba Anamoah stirs reaction with major shade

  • Heavy rains destroy property, disrupt outdoor events at weekend nationwide

Heavy rains on Saturday ushered in the month of October, causing floods that destroyed property and disrupted many outdoor events, especially weddings and funerals.

The intermittent downpour which started at dawn in Accra restricted movement and caused vehicular traffic especially, delaying many planned ceremonies.

Vehicles and commuters waded through heavy floods to get to their destinations while some drivers had to park their vehicles on the shoulders of roads due to poor visibility.

Event grounds deserted during the rains

Pictures posted on social media showed how seats and tables arranged at some open air events grounds had been abandoned while guests sought cover in nearby facilities.

Determined to go through their events as planned, some hosts and their guests resorted to the use of umbrellas, and in addition, hurried through the activities for the ceremonies.

Throughout last week, heavy rains have been lashing some districts across the country including Accra, Kumasi and its surrounding areas and parts of the Eastern Region.

In Kumasi, the wares of hundreds of traders in the Kumasi Central Market were destroyed in Wednesday’s flooding which has been blamed on the contractors of the Kejetia Redevelopment Project.

The traders accused them of blocking a sewage system at the construction site, leading to the floods although the contractors have denied being responsible for the situation.

Joynews reported that 20 per cent part of the central market space yet to be demolished for the market redevelopment project got flooded, destroying wares worth millions of cedis.

Consultant in charge of the project Emmanuel Danso said they only took measures to gather the debris in the gutters that are connected to the Subin stream at the market.

At least three persons reportedly died in floods in the Ashanti Region; specifically at Oduom-Bebre, Asokwa and Subin.

That same Wednesday in Kyebi in Akyem Abuakwa area of the Eastern Region, heavy rains caused the Birim River to overflow its banks and caused flooding in the area, thereby hindering vehicular movement.

Some vehicles which were in motion ahead of the rains and those that were trying to meander their way through the waters were partially submerged, likewise other structures.

It was reported that it is the first time in over five decades that Kyebi had experienced severe flooding of its kind with the impact of illegal mining on the Birim River being blamed for the scale of flooding.

In a social media post on Saturday, the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi said the Akokoaso community was not spared by the rains this week.

“Floods this week took a life, washed away some trading stalls, roads and oil palm processing plants in the Akokoaso”, he said after visiting the scenes and commiserating with the victim’s family.

Meanwhile the Ghana Meteorological Agency has cautioned Ghanaians to expect more rains and be cautious in flood-prone areas.

  • Modernity and social media putting marriage institutions under attack

It has been observed that the institution of marriage in Ghana is under attack due to modernity and the superhighway information available to people on social media and other internet enabled platforms.

Dr Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo, the Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam, and Ms Annie Emefa Fiawoo, a private legal practitioner, said this, and called for safeguards including legal support to individuals especially before marriage.

They said it was important for people to be counselled on the legal and social nuances of marriage and made to understand that it takes “a lot of sacrifices and love” to live in harmony as couple and among families and in society.

This would ensure that the institution of marriage is protected and made sustainable, with people having the peace of mind to build strong families and contribute to social cohesion and national development.

Dr Azindoo, said: “Today, the institution of marriage has become the worst victim of attack due to the superhighway of information, made possible through the internet and social media.”

He said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the Marriage Link Consult (M-Link Consult) a one-stop marriage consulting and event firm, in Accra.

He encouraged institutions including religious organisations and counselling support units to support individuals to lasting and enjoyable marriages and advised that people to embrace love and sympathy in their marital lives.

Dr Azindoo commended M-Link Consult for the initiative and said: “This is a very good initiative, and I must say making it a non- denominational entity is what makes it more special, because it will make it easy for everyone, no matter their religion or beliefs, to walk in and get served.”

Ms Fiawoo also noted modernity and social media had made everything extremely fast with the institution of marriage, while bemoaning the high rate of divorce in the country.

She explained that every registered marriage could not be dissolved in Ghana within two years “unless under extreme circumstances” – one thing she said many people do not know.

“We have had many people seeking divorce in less than two years of their marriages, and they get shocked when we inform them that they cannot have a divorce until after two years. This tells us that people just rush into marriages and do not seek adequate legal information about marriage before registration,” she said.

She added that when people were made to undergo periodic pre and post marriage counselling together with engaging in occasional activities to spice up their union, marriages would be sustained, and cautioned against domestic violence.

Mr Sylvanus Tettey-Tamaklo, Former Ghana Ambassador to Zimbabwe recommended forgiveness and tolerance as the cornerstone of their marriages for couples.

He said: “The issue of forgiveness is very important in every marriage or relationship. Marriage Link must treat it. I also want you to treat the intestate succession law and the sickling tests as topics. They are very important.”

Mr Dickson Antwi, Chief Executive Officer of the company, called for concerted effort to counter the threat to the institution of marriage by promoting social harmony and peace in the homes.

Among others, M-Link Consult would provide marriage partner identification and matching services, and pre-marital counselling for both faith and non-faith-based individuals to adequately prepare them for marriage.

They would also offer customised marriage events organisation to help couples to have stress-free ceremony to suit the budget for marriage ceremony as well as marriage “juice up” services for couples facing challenges in their marriages.

  • Two arrested in crackdown on Ghana Premier League piracy

This past weekend saw a crackdown on persons who illegally stream Ghana Premier League matches on new media platforms and social media.

Two of the alleged culprits were arrested at the Baba Yara Stadium during yesterday’s GPL clash between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak.

Prior to that, StarTimes, the Chinese firm which signed a five-year agreement worth $5.25million with the Ghana Football Association in 2020 to be the exclusive television rights owner of the GPL and the FA Cup for five years had sent out cease and desist letters to several YouTube channels that were streaming the league matches without approval.

Two of the letters sent out by the lawyers of StarTimes were addressed to the owners of Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV and Pepe Suarez.

    Portions of the letters read.

  • Tins of Peak milk powder and ovaltine discovered half full after purchase

A customer who bought tins of Peak milk powder and Ovaltine discovered that the content of the two products were reduced.

The customer’s post on social media has stirred up debate particularly at a time when prices of products have nearly doubled as a result of inflation and the dollar rate.

“This is not right!!! Prices of these are higher than before, yet you reduce the content? Why? At least be considerate knowing as school reopens now, this is gonna be the preferred breakfast for the children. Sometimes, we too, we’re the problem. Cheating each other” the customer posted on social media platform Facebook.

Several people have shared their thoughts over the post, with several claiming to have experienced the same thing.
Others falsely accused Nestlé, however it was later found that the involved items are not theirs.

Although the product’s manufacturers have been informed, there has still not been any official reaction from the company.

I’m sorry about your experience, but it’s a real thing, unfortunately. It’s called “shrinkflation”. Sometimes, to not raise prices too high, consumer goods companies resort to reducing the volume / size of the product. For example, instead of a 10-cedi raise, the company may apply a 5-cedi raise and in parallel reduce the volume of product. Other times, companies resort to re formulation and using more affordable ingredients. That was partly what we saw in the recent Ideal curding issue. These are hard times.

I was going to write on Ideal Milk, Carnation Milk, etc and Beta Malt. It’s like they have divided the original contents into two, then topped up with Water to sell back to us at higher cost.

I think it’s time we start to call them out.

I will do the post today…. With pictures. It’s sooo irritating…. Those things are so diluted.

  • Police arrest chief of Sefwi Elubo and brother over ‘galamsey’ activities

The Ghana Police Service says it has arrested the chief of Sefwi Elubo and his brother “in connection with illegal mining”.

In a statement dated September 17, the Police said, the arrest was made on Friday, September 16, in the Sefwi Elubo township in the Western Region.

According to the Police, it is also pursuing six other people in connection with illegal mining activities in the area.

“The suspects, Nana Anini Baffour and his brother Kwadwo Affi were arrested following Police investigation of a video circulating on social media showing illegal mining activities in some compound houses of the town.

Investigation has so far discovered dug-out pits from the compound leading to the bedroom of the chief’s brother”, the statement added.

Police arrest chief of Sefwi Elubo and brother over 'galamsey' activities
The statement from the Ghana Police Service on the arrest of the chief of Sefwi Elubo and his brother

In the release, which was signed by Director of Public Affairs, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Police further indicated that, “Four other deep dug-out pits have also been uncovered by the Police in other houses in the same vicinity”.

The arrest of the traditional leader comes at a time when there are widespread concerns about the involvement of chiefs in the illicit act.

Following the re-emergence of galamsey kingpin, Aisha Huang, some citizens have accused traditional leaders of being complicit in the act.

According to them, some traditional leaders conspire with illegal miners and give them lands to facilitate their mining activities.

In the wake of these developments, government has reaffirmed its commitment to dealing with the menace, and bringing all perpetrators to book.

Meanwhile, regarding the arrest of the chief of Sefwi Elubo, the Police said, “Investigation has further revealed that the chief, his brother and six other suspects who are on the run are the main people behind the illegal mining activities”

“As investigation continues, we would like to assure the public that all those involved will be brought to face justice”, the statement concluded.
