South Korea’s president, Yoon Suk Yeol, impeached

South Korea is set for an early presidential election following the historic impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has been officially removed from office after a unanimous ruling by the Constitutional Court.

The decision, delivered on Friday, marks the dramatic end of Yoon’s presidency, which had been suspended since December after parliament voted to impeach him over his failed attempt to impose martial law. The court’s eight-member panel upheld the charges, declaring Yoon’s actions unconstitutional and unjustifiable.

In reading the verdict, acting court president Moon Hyung-bae declared that Yoon had “[gone] against the people he was supposed to protect.” He further noted that the president’s actions “damaged people’s basic political rights” and “violated the principles of the rule of law and democracy.”

The judgment sparked powerful reactions across South Korea’s capital, where thousands had gathered to watch the ruling live. Emotions ran high, with some in tears of relief and vindication, and others heartbroken at the loss of a leader they believed had been wrongly targeted.

A fresh election must now be held within 60 days — no later than June 3 — but the country faces a deeply fractured political landscape. Yoon’s abrupt downfall has left South Korea not only leaderless but sharply divided.

Despite overwhelming public outcry over his attempt to invoke military rule, Yoon refused to step back. He denied any wrongdoing, fought his impeachment relentlessly, and continued to promote conspiracy theories that accused political rivals of being agents of North Korea and China. He claimed these “anti-state forces” had interfered in previous elections and infiltrated state institutions.

“Smuggled goods are crippling our local businesses, and we are determined to stop it,” he warned.

Through repeated assertions of voter fraud and foreign influence, Yoon has become a rallying figure for South Korea’s far right. For his supporters, he is a political martyr brought down by a corrupt system, with weekly protests in central Seoul growing in size and intensity.

These protests reflect a shifting public sentiment. A growing segment of the population no longer trusts the institutions at the heart of South Korea’s democracy. According to recent surveys, more than one-third of citizens distrust the Constitutional Court, and over a quarter question the credibility of the country’s voting system.

Amid this climate of suspicion and unrest, the next president will inherit a nation in urgent need of reconciliation — and leadership. The new administration must also prepare for external pressures, particularly from the United States. Former President Donald Trump’s return has already strained trade relations, with fresh tariffs hitting South Korean exports of cars and steel.

Many in Seoul fear tougher demands ahead, including heightened defence spending and diplomatic compromises with North Korea. All this adds to the formidable task awaiting Yoon’s successor.

South Korea must now navigate this critical juncture — restoring public confidence, rebuilding unity, and repositioning itself in an increasingly volatile global environment.

The game, scheduled for Tuesday, August 27, will be the team’s second high-profile test ahead of the competition which begins on August 31.

Olympic organizers sorry for introducing South Korea as North Korea at opening ceremony

Olympic organizers have issued an “apology” after South Korea’s athletes were mistakenly introduced as North Korea during the opening ceremony in Paris.

While the South Korean team paraded down the River Seine, both French and English announcers referred to them as the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” which is North Korea’s official title.

The same designation was correctly used later when North Korea’s delegation appeared.

The two Koreas have been separated since the end of World War II, and recent tensions between them have been high.

Although the television broadcast displayed the correct title in subtitles, the South Korean sports ministry has announced plans to file a “strong complaint” with the French government regarding the error.

In a statement, the ministry expressed “regret over the announcement… where the South Korean delegation was introduced as the North Korean team.”

The statement added that the second vice sports minister, Jang Mi-ran, a 2008 Olympic weightlifting champion, had demanded a meeting with Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued an apology on its official Korean-language X account, saying: “We would like to offer a deep apology over the mistake that occurred in the introduction of the South Korean delegation during the opening ceremony.”

South Korea, formally known as the Republic of Korea, has 143 athletes in its Olympic team this year, competing across 21 sports.

North Korea has sent 16 athletes. This is the first time it has competed in the games since Rio 2016.

Jospong seeks backing for African enterprises from South Korea

Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, has stated that Ghana and Africa stand to benefit significantly from their business and development relationship with South Korea.

“Opportunity is important in business,” he said, adding, “South Korea has advanced technology in renewable energies such as solar and wind power, which can benefit our continent.”

“South Korea has the capacity that can benefit African businesses, and they need to unleash that to benefit the continent and Ghana,” he said, adding, “The private sector is ready to partner with Korea, which must remove restrictions and bureaucracy as it seeks to support 48 African nations.”

Dr. Agyepong made these remarks during a television interview following the Korean-African Summit in Kintex, Korea.

He praised South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol for his dedication to increasing support for Africa, highlighting the president’s promises to enhance trade and investment.

“The whole world is about climate change,” Dr. Agyepong said, adding, “In Ghana, the Jospong Group has tackled waste management as a serious issue, from collection, haulage, composting, recycling, and other forms of treatment.”

The Summit emphasized initiatives such as Economic Partnership Agreements, Trade and Investment Promotion Frameworks, and support for the African Continental Free Trade Area.

During the event, South Korea revealed plans to increase official development assistance to US$10 billion by 2030 and to provide US$14 billion in export financing.

Dr. Agyepong highlighted the importance of collaboration in key sectors like minerals, digital transformation, climate change, food security, and public health.

The Korea-Africa Summit, held on June 4-5, 2024, in Ilsan and Seoul, aimed to enhance cooperation, address global challenges, and foster collective strength for sustainable development.

The outcome is anticipated to result in new agreements and investments in energy access, agricultural transformation, and capacity building across Africa.

This is the first event of its kind since the establishment of the Republic of Korea. However, other summits and conferences between Korea and Africa have taken place, such as the 7th Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (KOAFEC) Ministerial Conference in September 2023. Additionally, the Korea-Africa Energy Investment Framework (KAEIF) was launched in 2021.

Ghana and South Korea have maintained diplomatic relations since 1977. The two nations have collaborated on a broad range of issues, including politics, economics, trade, investment, technology, security, and culture.

The Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has been involved in numerous projects in Ghana, such as the Dawhenya Integrated Rural Development Project, a maternal and child healthcare initiative, a water and sanitation project, and a capacity-building project for power transmission systems.

Dr. Agyepong was optimistic about the future of Korea-Africa relations, stating, “The future looks bright, and I’m thrilled to be part of this transformative journey.”

  • South Korean billionaire ordered to pay $1bn to wife in divorce settlement

South Korean billionaire ordered to pay $1bn to wife in divorce settlement

South Korean mogul Chey Tae-won has been instructed to pay his former spouse, Roh So-young, a staggering 1.38 trillion won ($1bn; £788m) in cash, marking South Koreas largest divorce settlement to date.

The decision comes nearly ten years after Chey’s marriage dissolved when it was revealed he had fathered a child with another woman.

The Seoul High Court’s ruling entitles Roh to a portion of Chey’s company shares, after being married to him for 35 years. Chey’s legal team, representing the influential SK Group conglomerate chairman, announced plans to appeal, arguing that the court accepted Roh’s claims without considering their merits.

The awarded sum is significantly higher than the 66.5 billion won settlement proposed by a lower court in 2022, which also dismissed Roh’s request for a share of Chey’s SK shares.

This was overturned on Thursday, when the High Court found that the shares should be considered joint property.

In its verdict, the court stated that “it was reasonable to rule that, as his wife, Roh played a role in increasing the value of SK Group and Chey’s business activity”.

The court put Mr Chey’s wealth at around 4tn won, meaning Ms Roh – with whom Mr Chey had three children – would take an estimated 35%.

It also found that Ms Roh had helped ease regulatory hurdles for Mr Chey’s business and that her father – former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo – had “played the role of a protective shield” for SK’s ex-chairman Chey Jong-hyon.

The court said Mr Chey had not shown “any signs of remorse for his foul behaviour in the course of the trial… nor respect for monogamy” and said the new settlement took into account Ms Roh’s suffering over her ex-husband’s extramarital affair.

Chey’s legal team contended that his former spouse’s political ties did not benefit his business; in fact, they asserted they had been a hindrance.

Following the verdict, shares in SK Inc, a major semiconductor manufacturer with holdings in telecommunications, chemicals, and energy, surged by 9%.

  • Employees of Samsung electronics to embark on a first-ever strike in South Korea

Employees of Samsung electronics to embark on a first-ever strike in South Korea

A union representing thousands of workers at Samsung Electronics has announced the first strike in the South Korean technology giant’s 55-year history.

The National Samsung Electronics Union plans a one-day protest on June 7, urging all its members to use their paid leave, and has not ruled out a future full-scale strike.

The union, with approximately 28,000 members, represents over a fifth of Samsung’s total workforce.

Samsung Electronics has stated it will continue negotiations with the union.

“We can’t stand persecution against labour unions anymore. We are declaring a strike in the face of the company’s neglect of labourers,” a union representative said during a live-streamed news conference.

Samsung Electronics’ management has been in talks with the union since the start of this year over wages, but the two sides have so far failed to strike a deal.

The union has demanded a 6.5% pay rise and a bonus pegged to the company’s earnings.

Samsung Electronics is the world’s largest maker of memory chips, smartphones and televisions.

Analysts have warned that a full-scale strike could affect the firm’s computer chip manufacturing and impact the global supply chains of electronics.

Samsung Electronics is the flagship unit of South Korean conglomerate Samsung Group. It is the biggest of the country’s family-controlled businesses that dominate Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

Samsung Group was known for not allowing unions to represent its workers until 2020 when the company came under intense public scrutiny after its chairman was prosecuted for market manipulation and bribery.

Samsung Electronics’ shares were trading about 2% lower in Seoul after the announcement.

  • US and South Korea practise fighter jets after North Korea test missiles

US and South Korea practise fighter jets after North Korea test missiles

North Korea shot what seem like short-range missiles towards its east coast on Friday, according to South Korea’s military. This happened the day after South Korea and the US flew strong fighter jets together in a drill that North Korea sees as a big security danger.

South Korea’s military leaders said that North Korea launched weapons from its east coast Wonsan region. The weapons traveled about 300 kilometers (185 miles) before landing in the waters between Korea and Japan. Japan’s top government spokesperson, Yoshimasa Hayashi, said that a missile from North Korea landed in an area outside of Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

South Korea’s military said the missile launches are a clear threat to peace in the area. South Korea will be ready to defend against any attacks from North Korea, with help from the United States.

North Korea has been testing more weapons recently to make its weapons stronger and more up-to-date. Talks with the United States and South Korea have not been successful. Last week, the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, watched a new rocket launch system being tested. This information was reported by North Korea’s state media.

North Korea says it had to make its nuclear and missile programs stronger because of the threats from the US. North Korea says the US and South Korea are doing more military training, which they think is getting ready for an invasion. Foreign experts believe that North Korea uses its rivals’ military drills as an excuse to build more weapons. They think this will help North Korea have more power in future talks with the US.

On Thursday, two South Korean planes and two US planes practiced flying together over the middle of South Korea. North Korea is very concerned about the advanced US weapons being sent to their area. AircraftReportedly, a US F-22 was sent to South Korea for the first time in seven months.

North Korea’s official news agency said on Friday that the US sending F-22s for training with South Korea is more evidence of the US being hostile and wanting to use force against North Korea. KCNA says that South Korea’s military is making tensions worse to support their master’s plan to fight against North Korea.

It said that the F-22s flying over will make a bad situation worse for the US, but it didn’t say what North Korea will do about it.

On Friday, Kim’s sister Kim Yo Jong said that North Korea’s recent weapons tests are part of the country’s plan to build up their weapons over the next five years, which started in 2021. She said the new weapons are made to attack Seoul, the capital of South Korea. She also said the tests were not meant to show off weapons North Korea wants to sell to Russia.

“We openly admit that we will use these weapons to stop Seoul from coming up with unnecessary ideas,” stated Kim Yo Jong in a message reported by KCNA.

  • South Korea approves probe into deadly Halloween crush in 2022, which claimed 159 lives

South Korea approves probe into deadly Halloween crush in 2022, which claimed 159 lives

South Korea’s government voted to start a new investigation into the Halloween stampede in Seoul that killed 159 people.

The one group of lawmakers called the National Assembly approved the bill with a vote of 256-0. It will become a law after the conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol signs it and his government agency approves it. These are just formal steps because the president and his ruling party already agreed on the law.

The bill wants to find out why the crush happened, how the authorities responded to it, and who is responsible for it. It plans to make a group of nine people who will look into the disaster on their own for up to 15 months.

After the committee figures out who is to blame and who should be charged, they will tell the government’s investigators. The police would have to finish looking into the suspects within three months, as the new law says.

The crush was a big disaster in South Korea that made a lot of people very sad. Most of the people who were hurt were in their 20s and 30s. They had met in a popular area in Seoul called Itaewon to celebrate Halloween.

After the tragedy, people were mad at the government for not taking safety and rules seriously, even though they should have learned from the ferry sinking in 2014. That accident killed 304 people, most of them were teenagers on a school trip.

In early 2023, the police found that they didn’t plan well for a large crowd in Itaewon, even though they knew it would happen. At that time, investigators said police didn’t listen to calls from people who warned about a big crowd before it became dangerous.

Over 20 police and other officials are being tried for the disaster, but few high-ranking officials have been charged or held responsible. This has made families of the victims and opposition lawmakers ask for a separate investigation.

Before the vote, Kim Kyo-heung, a member of the Democratic Party and head of the safety committee in parliament, said he hoped that the investigation would find out who is responsible for the disaster and why it happened. He also wants to come up with a plan to stop this from happening again.

The families of the victims were happy about the new law and showed their support by gathering outside the National Assembly.

Lee Jeong-min, who speaks for the families, said today is a very special day for our grieving families. “We couldn’t have done it without the help of opposition politicians and lots of people who supported us. ” I want to thank them a lot.

President Yoon had said no to a new investigation of the disaster before. In January, he said no to a bill for an independent investigation of the Itaewon crush that had been approved by parliament.

But, when he met with Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung on Monday, he said he wouldn’t disagree with it, as long as some current disagreements are fixed, such as whether the fact-finding committee can ask for arrest warrants.

Yoon changed his position because people want him to work with Lee’s party, which won big in the April 10 election and will control parliament for four more years.

In a meeting on Wednesday, Lee’s party agreed to take out parts of the proposed law that were causing disagreement.

The head of the Democratic Party, Jin Sung-joon, said the party agreed to the president and his ruling party’s requests to help the grieving families who can’t wait any longer.

South Korea given 14-month prison term for killing of 76 cats

A man in South Korea was sent to prison for 14 months because he killed 76 cats. This was a very cruel thing to do to animals.

The court in South Korea said that a man in his 20s was found guilty of breaking the law to protect animals last week. The court didn’t know who the man was.

The man killed many cats from December 2022 to September 2023 because he really hated the animals. This hate started after some cats scratched his car. This information comes from a court decision that the Associated Press saw.

He caught stray cats and got some from the internet. Then he choked some to death and killed others with scissors, according to the court. The court said he caused the death of a cat by running it over with a car.

The judge said he had to go to prison because he did really mean and terrible things on purpose, many times.

It said that the man had no criminal record and felt sorry for his crimes, but his mental health was also a reason for his actions.

The man asked for a change in the judge’s decision.

Borami Seo, who works for the Humane Society International in South Korea, said that the sentence shows that people in Korean society are becoming more worried about the treatment of animals and are not accepting senseless cruelty.

Seo also said that this case shows how important it is to pass a law that recognizes animals as living beings and gives them more protection.

  • President of South Korea meets doctors in an effort to put an end to their strike

President of South Korea meets doctors in an effort to put an end to their strike

The South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol engaged in discussions with the leader of a strike comprised of numerous junior doctors and expressed the government’s openness to considering their proposal for a significant expansion of medical school admissions.

The meeting was the first one to happen after 90% of the country’s 13,000 trainee doctors stopped working in February, causing problems in hospitals. But there was still no news of progress right after the meeting.

On Monday, Yoon talked on TV for a long time and explained why he wants to add 2,000 new medical students every year. Right now, there’s a limit of 3,058 students. However, he said his government is willing to talk if doctors come up with a plan that gives good reasons for their request for a smaller increase in the number of students.

Yoon met with Park Dan, who is in charge of a committee for young doctors in Korea, for over two hours on Thursday. Yoon’s office said that the president promised to listen to the opinions of young doctors in future discussions about medical reform, including adding more doctors.

It wasn’t clear if the government will talk to the doctors soon and if Yoon is okay with reducing the number of students admitted to the medical school. The people on strike asked the government to cancel the plan to increase admissions for 2,000 more students.

Park wrote a short message on Facebook after the meeting. She said that the medical service in Korea doesn’t have a good future. But she didn’t explain why. Park did not answer the phone when called multiple times. Another player, Ryu Ok Hada, said that Park met with Yoon without permission from the other players.

During the meeting, Yoon listened to Park’s ideas about issues with South Korea’s medical system. They also talked about how to make things better for interns and medical residents. Yoon’s office shared this in a statement.

Yoon says the number of students needs to increase by 2,000 students because South Korea has many old people and not enough doctors for the patients.

However, lots of doctors believe that universities can’t handle so many new students all at once, and it would eventually make the quality of the country’s medical services worse. Critics think that doctors in South Korea, who are among the highest-paid professionals, are concerned that having more doctors would mean they would earn less money in the future.

Most people in South Korea are in favor of Yoon’s plan according to public surveys. Observers believe that regular people are getting more and more tired of the long fight between the government and doctors. The doctors’ strikes have led to many cancelled surgeries and other medical treatments at hospitals.

Yoon is getting a lot of pressure from people, even from his own party, to give in because his party’s candidates are having a hard time competing with their liberal rivals in the upcoming April 10 parliamentary elections.

The doctors who went on strike may have their medical licenses taken away because they didn’t go back to work when the government said they had to in February. Government people have said many times that they might make the punishment less if the strikers go back to work at their hospitals on their own.

The doctors who are on strike are only a small part of all the doctors in South Korea, which is estimated to be around 115,000 to 140,000. However, in some big hospitals, they make up around 30 to 40 percent of the doctors. They help the main doctors and department heads during surgeries and other treatments, while also learning from them.

A South Korean chemical tanker flipped over near an island in the southwest of Japan on Wednesday, officials said. Eight people on the ship died. One person from the crew lived, but we didn’t know what happened to the other two.

Authorities stated that the big ship was carrying 980 tons of a chemical called acrylic acid. This chemical is corrosive and is used in things like glue, paint, and polish. Officials are checking for leaks and figuring out what to do to protect the environment if there is a leak.

The Japan Coast Guard got a call for help from a chemical tanker called Keoyoung Sun. The tanker said it was leaning to one side and trying to stay safe from the bad weather near Mutsure Island in Japan. Mutsure Island is about 1,000 kilometers away from Tokyo in southwest Japan.

The ship had flipped over by the time the rescuers got there. On NHK television in Japan, a video showed the ship upside down with waves crashing against its red bottom.

The boat had 11 people on it, but only nine have been found, officials said. One person from Indonesia is the only crew member that is confirmed to be alive. The coast guard is still looking for two more people.

South Korean man detained in Russia on suspicion of espionage

“A man from South Korea has been arrested in Russia on suspicion of being a spy, according to the news. ” South Korean officials have said that they arrested someone and are talking with other countries to bring them back.

Baek Won-soon was taken into custody in Vladivostok, a city in the far-east, earlier this year. He is currently in a jail in Moscow.

It is thought that he is the first person from South Korea to be arrested in Russia in a long time for spying.

We don’t know much about his situation. The foreign ministry of South Korea is still investigating and they can’t say much about it yet. Its officials were trying to give help to people from their country who were in trouble in a foreign country.

Russian state media Tass reported that an unnamed official said Mr Baek is accused of giving secret information to foreign intelligence services.

Someone in Russia’s far east, who doesn’t want to be identified, said they know Mr. They told the news that Mr. Baek has been helping North Korean workers in Russia and helping them get away.

Media in South Korea said that the government of Seoul was only told last month by Russian officials about the arrest.

Yonhap, a news source from South Korea, said Mr. Baek was taken into custody by Russia’s Federal Security Service in January when he got to Vladivostok from China.

The store reported that he is a religious worker and he was with his wife. She was also arrested, but then let go. The news source reported that people think she is in South Korea now.

Mr Baek was recently arrested by Russian authorities, which is part of a pattern of them arresting foreigners since the war in Ukraine started two years ago. Moscow is being accused of arresting people from other countries to use them for political reasons or to exchange them for prisoners.

Some of the people involved are an American man who works for the Wall Street Journal. He was arrested last March for spying. There is also a Russian-US journalist who was accused of spreading untrue information about the Russian military.

Tass said that Mr. Baek and Mr. Gershkovich are both in the Lefortovo Prison. The court decided to keep him in jail until June, according to the Russian news agency.

South Korea and its Western allies have criticized Russia for invading Ukraine and agreed to impose sanctions on Moscow. At the same time, Russia and North Korea have become closer friends. Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong un met last year and experts think they made deals to share military technology.

Russian and North Korean officials had some meetings in Vladivostok last year.

This happened a few days after North Korea said they would also do military training in response to the South Korean-U.S military exercises, which they see as preparation for invading their country.

On Thursday, the North Korean Central News Agency said that the drills included artillery units that can reach Seoul, the capital of South Korea.

Kim said that artillery units need to act quickly and aggressively as soon as they enter a real war.

North Korea’s big guns that are placed close to the border are a danger to Seoul, a city with 10 million people that is 40 to 50 kilometers away.

North Korea has been doing more missile tests since 2022 to make stronger nuclear weapons that can reach the U.S Mainland and South Korea. In simpler words: South Korea’s main area. South Korea and the United States. The military has increased their training exercises in reaction.

The experts believe that North Korea wants to use its updated weapons to get the United States to lift sanctions when they start talking again. They think North Korea might do more weapons tests and use aggressive language this year because the United States and South Korea are having important elections.

North Korea threatens to use force in response to drills between US and South Korea

North Korea has expressed that the current state of affairs between South Korea and the United States is not satisfactory, and they may take action in response.

The North warned the South Korean and U.S a day later troops started their yearly computer-driven practice and different physical training for 11 days. This year’s training sessions were going to include 48 field exercises, which is twice as many as last year.

The North Korean Defense Ministry said in a statement on state media that it strongly disagrees with the U.S’s South Korea is openly showing a military threat to another country and trying to invade it.

A person from the government of North Korea said that their military will keep an eye on their enemies and do important military actions to keep the Korean Peninsula safe.

The person speaking didn’t say what North Korea will do, but people think North Korea will probably do missile tests or other things to make their military stronger.

North Korea sees military exercises by its enemies as practice for invading their country. Both South Korea and the U.S participate in these drills. Officials have said many times that their training is focused on defending themselves. North Korea has responded before to South Korea and the United States. Performing drills by shooting many missiles into the water.

The military leaders in South Korea said last week that this year’s joint military exercises with the United States were planned to stop North Korea’s nuclear threats. The drills will include shooting weapons, bombing, air attacks, and intercepting missiles.

Worries about North Korea’s nuclear program have increased over the last two years. This is because North Korea has been testing missiles more frequently and has openly threatened to use nuclear weapons first. The United States The US and South Korea are doing more military exercises and sending more powerful soldiers. The military is using things like big ships and planes that can carry nuclear bombs as a reaction.

This year, North Korea shot six missiles and practiced firing cannons. Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, said that his country will not try to make peace with South Korea and promised to stop trying to unite peacefully with them. Kim said North Korea will be more aggressive with its military at the disputed sea border with South Korea.

Specialists think that North Korea may believe that having more powerful weapons will give them more power in future talks with the United States. North Korea wants to be recognized as a nuclear state so that they can get relief from the economic sanctions imposed by the U. S

It is expected that North Korea will increase tensions by doing more missile tests and using aggressive language this year, as the United States. and South Korea are getting ready for big elections. Experts believe that North Korea might do something to cause trouble near the border with South Korea.

  • South Korea: Doctors on strike risk arrest if they don’t show up for work

South Korea: Doctors on strike risk arrest if they don’t show up for work

The South Korean government is considering legal action against junior doctors who are on strike and may revoke their medical licenses if they do not return to work by Thursday.

Three quarters of the country’s new doctors have stopped working in the past week. This has caused problems and delays for surgeries at big hospitals.

The new doctors in training are upset about the government’s idea to allow many more students to go to medical school each year. This is supposed to make more doctors available in the healthcare system.

South Korea doesn’t have enough doctors for its people, especially with more old people, and the government says there will be even fewer doctors in the future.

This week at St Mary’s Hospital in Seoul, the empty hallways showed us a peek at what the future could be like. Hardly any doctors or patients were in the area outside the emergency room. Patients were told to stay away.

Ryu Ok Hada, who is 25 years old and is a doctor, and his co-workers haven’t gone to the hospital for more than a week.

“It’s strange not waking up at 4 a. m,” Ryu said jokingly. The young doctor told the BBC that he usually works for more than 100 hours a week, and sometimes goes without sleep for 40 hours. “We work a lot but get paid very little, which is crazy. ”

Even though doctors in South Korea get paid a lot, Ryu thinks that he and other new doctors can end up making less than the least amount of money per hour because they work long hours. He thinks that adding more doctors won’t solve the problems in the healthcare system that make them work too much and earn too little.

Healthcare in South Korea is mostly run by private companies, but it’s not too expensive. Doctors say that life-saving surgeries and specialist care are not being paid enough, while less important treatments like cosmetic surgeries are paid too much. This means more doctors are choosing to work in big cities where they can make more money. As a result, rural areas don’t have enough doctors and emergency rooms in big cities are very busy.

Ryu, who has worked for a year, says that trainee and junior doctors are being taken advantage of by the university hospitals because they are being paid very little for their work. In big hospitals, they make up more than 40% of the staff and play a critical role in keeping the hospital running.

As a result, the number of surgeries that some hospitals can do has been cut in half over the past week. The problems have mostly only affected scheduled medical procedures, which have been delayed. There have been only a few times when people needing urgent care weren’t able to receive it. An old woman who was having a heart attack died in an ambulance last Friday because seven hospitals would not help her.

The government has announced that the patient had incurable cancer and her death was not caused by the walkout.

There are no medical doctors available.

The public and healthcare workers are getting frustrated with the doctors because they have to do more work. Nurses say they have to do tasks in operating rooms that doctors usually do.

Ms Choi, a nurse at a hospital in Incheon, said she now has to work an extra hour and a half each day and is doing the work of two people.

She said that the patients are worried, and she is upset that this is going on without a solution. She asked the doctors to return to work and find a different way to show their complaints.

The government wants to accept more medical students into university next year. They want to increase the number from 3,000 to 5,000. The doctors who are on strike say that if more doctors are trained, the quality of care will decrease because it would mean giving medical licenses to less skilled doctors.

However, the doctors are finding it hard to make people believe that having more doctors would be a bad thing. They have not received much sympathy. On Tuesday, Mrs. Lee, who is 74 years old, went to Seoul’s Severance Hospital for treatment for colon cancer. She had to travel for over an hour to get there.

“Where we live outside the city, there are no doctors,” she said.

Lee’s husband Soon-dong said that this problem has been ignored for too long and it needs to be solved now. The doctors are thinking only of themselves.

The pair was upset that more doctors might go on strike. They said they were willing to pay more for their treatment if it would help end the argument.

However, President Yoon Suk Yeol’s popularity has gone up since the walkout started. This means the government doesn’t have much reason to change the system and make procedures more costly before the elections in April.

Both sides are now in a serious and tense situation where they are not willing to back down. The health ministry won’t let the doctors quit and is saying they could get in trouble for breaking the law if they don’t go back to work by the end of the day.

The deputy minister of health, Park Min-soo, said that people who don’t meet the deadline will have their licenses taken away for at least three months.

The government will begin on Monday.

It is expected that the possibility of being punished will make doctors go back to work. Nearly 300 out of 9,000 striking doctors have already gone back to work.

Some people who left think the government’s tough actions could change what the public thinks. This Sunday, the Korean Medical Association will decide whether experienced doctors should work with new doctors in training. If many of their younger coworkers have been arrested, they will be more likely to do something about it.

Ryu said he was ready to be arrested and lose his medical license. He said if the government wouldn’t listen to their problems, he would quit his job.

“He said that the medical system is not working well, and if it keeps going like this, it will fail and not survive. ” “I have experience farming, so maybe I could do that again. “

  • South Korean woman passes away amid ongoing doctors’ strike

South Korean woman passes away amid ongoing doctors’ strike

South Korea’s government is investigating the death of an elderly woman who was unable to be admitted to any hospitals due to a doctors’ strike.

The individual passed away in the ambulance after their heart ceased functioning.

Almost 70% of young doctors have been on strike for the last week. They are protesting against the idea of training more doctors.

This has caused a lot of stress for emergency rooms, and the government says that doctors have put public health in danger.

On Friday, paramedics in Daejon tried to take a woman to seven hospitals, but they couldn’t because the hospitals didn’t have enough people to help or enough beds.

She called for help, but it took 67 minutes for her to get to the hospital. When she arrived, the doctors said she had already passed away.

Government people said they will look into the case, which has been talked about a lot in South Korean news.

This is thought to be the first death related to doctor strikes. Interns and residents are protesting because they are worried about having too many doctors and note nough jobs.

Emergency rooms are really busy because there aren’t enough staff to help. Operations have been delayed and patients had to go to different hospitals, as said by local news.

Over 9,000 doctors have decided not to go to work, and about 10,000 have quit at many hospitals in the country.

Interns and new doctors are usually the ones who work in the emergency room. Their absence has been noticed a lot because hospitals have had to change the way they work to make up for it,according to officials. Last week, the country’s healthcare system was in a very serious crisis.

The protests have gotten worse and turned into a serious disagreement, with officials saying they will take legal action.

On Tuesday, the government said they would take away doctors’ licenses if they didn’t come back to work by the end of the month.

President Yoon Suk-yeol said no to the doctors‘ request to stop his plan to increase the number of graduates by 60%. He believes the country needs more doctors because the population is getting older and there aren’t enough doctors to help.

South Korea has very few doctors compared to other countries in the OECD. There are only 2. 5 doctors for every 1,000 people. There aren’t enough doctors in important areas like having babies and taking care of children.

Over the years, different governments have tried to increase the number of students in medical schools, but they have faced strong opposition from groups of doctors.

Health experts say that doctors are putting their own financial interests before their patients’ well-being.

South Korea has a healthcare system that is mostly run by private companies. This means that the people who work in the medical field are not eager to have more competition and risk making less money.

“The South Korean people should not have to deal with difficulties just to satisfy the demands of the doctors,” said Prof. Jeong Hyoung-sun, a health administration professor at Yonsei University.

  • Surgeries delayed after more than 1,600 doctors in South Korea strike

Surgeries delayed after more than 1,600 doctors in South Korea strike

Many surgeries were postponed and hospitals refused to accept patients because more than 1,600 doctors in South Korea went on strike on Tuesday.

The young doctors are not happy with the government’s plan to add more trained doctors to the system.

South Korea doesn’t have enough doctors for the number of patients. The government wants to increase the number of spaces in medical schools to have more doctors available.

However, doctors do not like the idea of more competition, according to experts.

South Korea has a healthcare system where most treatments are paid for by insurance, and over 90% of hospitals are owned privately.

The doctors at this hospital are paid a lot of money compared to other doctors around the world. The average specialist at a public hospital earns almost $200,000 a year, which is much more than what most people in the country make.

However, right now there are only 2. 5 doctors for every 1,000 people. This is the second lowest rate in the group of countries called OECD, with Mexico being the lowest.

“Having more doctors means they have to compete with each other, which can lead to them earning less money. ” Prof Kwon Soon-man, a health expert at Seoul National University, said they don’t agree with the idea of having more doctors.

The country doesn’t have enough doctors in far-away places, and also not enough in specialities like children’s health and childbirth. These specialities are not seen as profitable as some other types of medicine like skin and plastic surgery.

Almost 6,500 new doctors and trainees, which is about half of the total, handed in their resignation letters on Monday, according to the country’s health ministry.

About 1,600 doctors didn’t go to work from that group. The Korean Medical Association and Korea Interns and Residents Association asked their members to stop working completely on Tuesday.

The government told doctors to start working again, and President Yoon Suk-yeol criticized a campaign that he said was putting people’s lives and health at risk.

He said he knew of cases where cancer surgeries had been delayed because of the walk-outs. South Korean news said some patients had to leave or go to different hospitals.

Young doctors are a big part of the staff in the emergency rooms. According to Yonhap, almost 37% of doctors in the largest hospitals in Seoul could be impacted.

“We are very upset that trainee doctors are not willing to work,” said Second Vice Health Minister Park Min-soo to reporters earlier this week.

On Tuesday, he said the government will use the law to stop the strike. The government can take away a doctor’s license if their actions hurt national healthcare.

The country has taken legal action against doctors who went on strike before. The government said it was going to do something to two officials of the Korean Medical Association on Tuesday.

Almost 6,500 new doctors decided to quit their jobs on Monday, which is about half of all the new doctors in the country. This information came from the health ministry.

Out of the group, around 1,600 doctors didn’t come to work. The Korean Medical Association and Korea Interns and Residents Association asked their members to not work at all on Tuesday.

The government wants doctors to start working again. President Yoon Suk-yeol is angry at the campaign that is hurting people’s lives and health.

He said he knew of situations where cancer surgeries had been delayed because of the strikes. South Korean news say some patients have had to leave the hospital or go to a different one.

Young doctors are a big part of the staff in emergency rooms. A news report said that as many as 37% of doctors at the largest hospitals in Seoul could be affected.

“We are very unhappy that trainee doctors are not willing to work,” said Second Vice Health Minister Park Min-soo to reporters earlier this week.

On Tuesday, he said the government will use the law to end the strike. The government can take away a doctor’s license if they do something that harms the nation’s healthcare.

The country has charged doctors in the past for going on strike. The government said it was doing something about two officials from the Korean Medical Association on Tuesday.

  • North Korea hacks South Korea president’s assistant’s emails

North Korea hacks South Korea president’s assistant’s emails

North Korea broke into the private email account of an assistant to the South Korean president, the president’s office told the BBC.

The breach happened before President Yoon Suk Yeol’s visit to the UK in November.

The employee’s personal email account was broken into after they used it for work, the president’s office said.

A news report in the local paper said that a very important government official claimed that hackers got into Mr. Yoon’s travel plans.

The Kukmin Ilbo newspaper said that the president’s messages had also been taken.

However, the president’s office did not share what information was taken.

This is believed to be the first time that the North has successfully broken into a member of the South Korean president’s team.

The president’s office said that their security system was not hacked.

“The security breach happened because a careless administrator broke the rules by using a commercial email for work,” a BBC report explained.

North Korea uses computer hacking to steal money and information, and they are getting better at it.

Pyongyang is facing strict international penalties, and its computer hackers are trying to steal lots of money, often in digital money, to support the government and its nuclear weapons plan.

It’s believed they have taken about $3 billion since 2016.

North Korea is believed to do computer hacking to steal secrets from other countries, like information about advanced weapons.

The South Korean government official, who did not want to be identified, told the Kukmin Ilbo newspaper that they were very surprised and upset when they found out about the breach. They said it could have been bad for Mr. Yoon’s safety in other countries.

President Yoon went to London for three days in November. He met King Charles and Queen Camilla, and also Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The South Korean government found out about the problem before the president left for his trip, and they did what was needed to fix it.

It said it had made its security stronger, by telling its team to be more careful, to stop another problem like this from happening.

Jesse Lingard makes ‘verbal’ agreement with South Korea after failed Saudi move – Reports

Jesse Lingard, the former Manchester United player, may finally end his football hiatus with a potential move to South Korea.

According to Sky Sports, the English international is close to finalising a deal with FC Seoul, encompassing a two-year contract with an option for a third year.

The report suggests that FC Seoul emerged as the most compelling option for Lingard.

Since departing Nottingham Forest last summer after the expiration of his contract, Lingard has been linked with various teams, including reports of interest from Al-Shabab.

Despite actively training on his own and a month-long stint with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, he remained without a signed deal.

Lingard even offered himself to Barcelona, but the La Liga champions declined.

With over 230 appearances for Manchester United and a successful loan spell at West Ham, Lingard, 31, boasts a substantial football career.

Although he represented England 32 times at the senior level, his recent stint at Forest, where he started 12 of 17 Premier League matches, was less impressive, leading to his departure last season.

As Lingard strives to revive his career, a potential move to Asia awaits if he can secure a deal with the South Korean capital club, FC Seoul.

  • Mancini apologizes for early departure after shootout loss

Mancini apologizes for early departure after shootout loss

Saudi Arabia’s head coach, Roberto Mancini, issued an apology after inadvertently leaving the pitch before the conclusion of his team’s penalty shootout against South Korea in the Asian Cup on Tuesday.

The Italian witnessed his team surrender a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of stoppage time at Education City Stadium, leading to extra time and ultimately a penalty shootout where they missed two crucial kicks.

Following the dramatic turn of events, Mancini, in a regretful move, walked off without witnessing Hwang Hee-Chan’s decisive penalty that secured South Korea’s advancement to the quarterfinals with a 4-2 victory on penalties.

This sets up a quarterfinal clash with Australia on Friday.

“I apologise [for leaving early]. I thought it was finished. I didn’t want to disrespect anyone,” Mancini told a news conference. “I want to say thank you to all my players for what they did. They are improving a lot.”

“We, as a group, improved a lot. We’ve worked for one month together [for the Asian Cup] and this is important.

Saudi Arabia initially took the lead in the round-of-16 match with Abdullah Radif’s goal in the 46th minute.

However, Cho Gue-Sung’s late header for South Korea levelled the game, forcing it into extra time.

The subsequent penalty shootout witnessed South Korea’s goalkeeper, Jo Hyeon-Woo, making crucial saves from Sami Al Naji and Abdulrahman Ghareeb.

Roberto Mancini, who was vying for his second major international title as a coach after guiding Italy to victory in the 2021 European Championship, saw his aspirations dashed.

On the other side, South Korea’s head coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, could potentially add the Asian Cup to his achievements, having previously won the Concacaf Gold Cup with the U.S. in 2013.

  • 14-year-old boy kills South Korean politician

14-year-old boy kills South Korean politician

A 14-year-old boy was responsible for hitting a South Korean lawmaker with a rock. He was sent to a mental health facility on Friday, as the police keep looking into the attack.

Last Thursday, a member of the ruling party, Bae Hyunjin, was attacked. This happened shortly after another man stabbed opposition leader Lee Jae-myung in the neck. This raises more worries about the harsh and divided political discussions in the country.

Police talked to the young suspect at the hospital while his parents were there. They will keep asking him questions to find out more. Cheon Young-gil, who works at the Gangnam district police station in Seoul, shared this information.

South Korea’s rules say that if doctors and police agree, a person who might be mentally ill can be sent to the hospital for up to three days to make sure they don’t hurt themselves or others.

Cheon did not want to talk about the suspect’s health after the attack on Thursday in southern Seoul. South Korean media said that people who know the boy but want to stay unnamed, said that he was getting help for feeling very sad.

Cheon said that the suspect was taken to the hospital quickly because of his age and health, but didn’t give any more details. He said if the boy’s parents agree, the police can ask the hospital to keep him there for more than three days.

The police spoke with Bae on Friday at the hospital where she was getting treatment. Bae’s office shared pictures of her coat and sweater with blood on them. People say these were given to the police as proof.

The reason for the attack was not immediately known.

Bae was chosen in 2020 and is considered a close friend of President Yoon Suk Yeol. President Yoon Suk Yeol’s office promised to do a deep investigation of the attack. Politicians from both Yoon’s party and the liberal opposition have criticized the attack as an attack on the country’s democracy. “Our politics are not on the right track anymore. ” We all agree that we should stop the hateful politics, but we still use harsh language towards our opponents. The old-fashioned style of politics that only appeals to the most extreme supporters is still going strong, according to Jung Kwang-jae, a spokesperson for the People Power Party.

In South Korea, politics is very divided. People have different opinions based on their age, beliefs, and where they live. The arguments between political parties are getting worse before the upcoming elections in April. The elections are seen as a way to see if Yoon is popular. He has low approval ratings and the opposition controls the National Assembly, so it’s hard for him to do what he wants.

The security camera video showed the person who attacked Bae. They wore a gray hat and a mask and talked to Bae before hitting her with a small rock. He kept hitting Bae with a sharp tool, even after she dropped to the ground. She fought off the attacker by herself, using her arms to push him away and grabbing his wrist. Then, someone else came out of a door and tried to help.

The leader of the other group, Lee, was in the hospital for eight days after he was attacked. He talked about the attack on Bae and said that his scar hurts again because of this terrible event. He also said that he hopes she gets better soon.

Lee almost won the 2022 election, but Yoon won. The person who attacked Lee said he did it because he didn’t want Lee to become president.

South Korea has experienced more attacks on politicians lately.

In 2022, Song Young-gil, who was the leader of Lee’s Democratic Party, was attacked by a man with a hammer during a rally to support Lee’s campaign for president. The song needed stitches but didn’t get seriously hurt.

In 2006, a man attacked Park Geun-hye, who was a conservative opposition leader, with a box cutter during an election event. Park, who later became president in 2012, had to get 60 stitches to close an 11-centimeter (4-inch) cut on her face.

  • North Korea conducts ‘underwater nuclear weapons system’ tests

North Korea conducts ‘underwater nuclear weapons system’ tests

North Korea says it tested its “underwater nuclear weapon” because of military exercises by the US, South Korea, and Japan.

State media reported that the underwater drone, which might be able to hold a nuclear weapon, was tested in the ocean on the east side.

Seoul had earlier said that the North’s descriptions of the drones’ capability were wrong and there is no evidence of the tests being done.

South Korea said the reported tests were a “provocation”.

The South Korea defense ministry said that North Korea’s actions are dangerous and could cause problems in the Korean Peninsula and the world. If North Korea makes a direct attack, South Korea will respond strongly and decisively.

The North has tested its “Haeil-5-23” system before, but now they are doing more military actions.

On Sunday, it said it had used a new missile that uses solid fuel and can go a medium distance.

This means that there were military exercises with actual gunfire at the ocean border with South Korea in early January.

Kim Jong Un, the leader of Pyongyang, has been acting more aggressive lately by canceling agreements aimed at keeping the peace.

On Friday, North Korea said it was provoked by joint military exercises by the US, South Korea, and Japan. They said this made them want to test their underwater weapons. This was reported by the state agency KCNA.

It accused the exercises of making the situation in the region more unstable and putting North Korea’s security at risk.

The US, South Korea, and Japan have been doing more military exercises to stop North Korea from doing more military actions. North Korea has been doing tests of its nuclear bombs and launching new weapons more often. So the other countries want to show that they are ready to fight back. These actions go against the rules set by the United Nations.

Mr Kim keeps saying that his country is getting more weapons ready for a war that could start at any time.

During the New Year, he showed some big changes in his government’s position on South Korea.

And earlier this week, he said that the old goal of joining together with South Korea was no longer important. He called South Korea the “main enemy”.

The speech talks about improvements in the military and nuclear capabilities of the country, especially in its underwater operations.

In September, the North showed their first submarine that they say can shoot nuclear weapons.

Since March 2023, it has been testing its Haeil system, which are unmanned nuclear-armed drones that work underwater. Haeil means “tidal wave” in the Korean language.

We don’t know much about these weapons or how well they work, but North Korean media say they can go into enemy waters and make big explosions underwater.

Experts believe that if the weapons work the way North Korea says they do, they would be less important than the country’s nuclear missiles.

North Korea’s weapons are still being developed, so they are not a big threat yet. Ahn Chan-il, who used to live in North Korea and now studies it, said this to the news agency AFP.

Last year, North Korea said it put a spy satellite in space. They want to put three more up this year.

It is still unclear if the satellite is working properly and this has not been confirmed by an independent source.

South Korea said North Korea got its satellite up with help from Russia. Russia reportedly got weapons from North Korea for its war in Ukraine.

Last year, Mr Kim had important meetings with Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin and defense minister Sergei Shoigu. This week the foreign minister of North Korea was also in Moscow.

  • South and North cannot be united – Kim Jong Un

South and North cannot be united – Kim Jong Un

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that joining with South Korea is not possible anymore and wants to change the constitution to call them the main enemy.

Mr Kim also said three groups working on bringing families back together will close, according to state media KCNA.

The president of South Korea said they will react even more strongly if North Korea provokes them.

North and South Korea have been separated since the Korean War ended in 1953.

They didn’t agree to a peace treaty and have been technically still at war ever since.

Mr Kim gave a speech at North Korea’s parliament and said that they should change their rules to teach people that South Korea is their main enemy.

He also said that if there is a war in Korea, the country’s laws should show how they would take control of the South.

Mr Kim took over from his father as the leader of North Korea in 2011. He said that North Korea doesn’t want war, but also won’t try to avoid it. This was reported by KCNA.

He said he was making a new decision about relationships between the north and the south, and he wanted to get rid of all the groups that were working on bringing them back together.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol told his cabinet that if North Korea does something bad, South Korea will hit back even harder. He said the South Korean military is very strong and can respond strongly.

    Increased conflicts or problems.

He said this as tensions got worse between North and South Korea in the past few months.

In November, North Korea stopped a deal with South Korea that was supposed to make their military less tense for five years. It said it would stop trying to stop a war and would send more soldiers to the border.

The South had stopped the agreement for a little while because Mr. Kim said he sent a spy satellite into space.

The North’s words and actions have been getting worse since then.

During the end-of-year meetings, Mr. Kim said he wanted to change North Korea’s position on relations with South Korea and its policy on reunification. He said he wanted to make a big change in the policy towards “the enemy”.

He also said he might use nuclear weapons on the South, and asked for more weapons for his country’s military.

The North recently fired missiles and held live-fire exercises near South Korea.

In a recent report by 38 North, an organization in the US that studies North Korea, two experts, Robert Carlin and Siegfried S Hecker, said that the situation in Korea is more dangerous now than it has ever been since the Korean War started in 1950.

“It may seem like an exaggeration, but we think that Kim Jong Un has decided to go to war, just like his grandfather did in 1950,” the statement read.

“We don’t know when or how Kim will attack, but the danger is much worse than the usual warnings from Washington, Seoul, and Tokyo about North Korea’s actions. ”

It also said that it didn’t think North Korean media’s talk about getting ready for war was just empty threats.

At the same time, North Korea’s Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui is in Russia and is expected to meet with President Vladimir Putin.

The two countries have gotten closer lately, because both are not liked by Western powers. In September, Mr. Kim went to Russia and met Mr. Putin

Anti-dog meat trading law passed in South Korea

South Korea made a new rule to stop killing and selling dogs for food by 2027.

The law wants to stop people from eating dog meat, which has been happening for hundreds of years.

People don’t like to eat dog meat as much as they used to. Young people don’t like it.

According to the law, it will be illegal to raise or kill dogs for food, and it will also be illegal to sell or distribute dog meat. People who are proven to have done wrong could be put in jail.

People who kill dogs could go to jail for three years, and those who raise dogs for meat or sell dog meat could go to jail for up to two years. However, people will still be allowed to eat dog meat.

The new law will start in three years, so farmers and restaurant owners have time to find other jobs and ways to make money. They need to give a plan to stop their businesses to their local government.

The government said they will help dog meat farmers, butchers, and restaurants that have to close. But they haven’t figured out exactly how they will help yet.

In 2023, the government said South Korea had about 1,600 places to eat dog meat and 1,150 places that breed dogs for meat.

Some older South Koreans like to eat boshintang, a stew made with dog meat. But young people don’t like to eat it anymore.

A survey by Gallup last year found that only 8% of people said they had eaten dog meat in the past year, which is a lot less than the 27% who said they had in 2015. Less than 20% of people said they liked eating the meat.

On Tuesday afternoon in Seoul, in a small street with many restaurants that serve dog meat, a few older people were eating the stew. There was a big difference between the older and younger people.

Kim Seon-ho, who is 86 years old, felt sad because of the ban. “We have been eating this since the Middle Ages. ” He asked, “Why won’t they let us eat our usual food. ” “If you stop people from eating dog, you should also stop them from eating beef. ”

Lee Chae-yeon, who is 22 years old, said that the ban is important for protecting animals. She said that many people have pets now. Dogs are part of our family and it’s not good to eat them.

Governments before, since the 1980s, promised to stop selling dog meat, but didn’t succeed. The current President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife Kim Keon Hee love animals. The couple has six dogs, and Ms. Kim wants people to stop eating dogs.

Animal rights groups are happy that the ban they wanted has been approved in Tuesday’s vote.

Jung Ah Chae, who runs the Humane Society in Korea, was surprised that the ban happened while she was alive. She said she is sad for the millions of dogs that didn’t benefit from this change earlier, but she is happy that South Korea can now start to be more friendly to dogs.

People who raise dogs for meat were trying to stop the ban. They said that because fewer young people are interested in it, the tradition should be allowed to fade away on its own. Lots of old farmers and restaurant owners said it would be hard for them to change jobs at their age.

A farmer who raises dogs, Joo Yeong-bong, told the BBC that the industry is in a very bad state.

“In 10 years, the industry will be gone. ” He said that because we are in our 60s and 70s, we don’t have a choice but to lose our jobs. He also said that this is taking away our freedom to eat what we want.

A 60-year-old woman named Mrs. Kim, who owns a restaurant that serves dog meat, told the BBC that she was upset about the ban. She thinks it’s because more people in South Korea are keeping pets.

Nowadays, many young people are not getting married. Instead, they consider their pets as part of their family. However, they still understand that pets need to eat their own food. She said we should be okay with eating dog meat, as long as the dogs are raised and killed in a clean place.

She added, “China and Vietnam eat dogs, so why are we stopping people from doing it. “

  • Kim’s daughter most likely to succeed him – South Korea

Kim’s daughter most likely to succeed him – South Korea

The South’s spy agency said that Kim Jong Un‘s young daughter is likely to take over as the leader of North Korea and has been with him at missile tests and military events.

This is the first time that the National Intelligence Service has recognized Kim Ju Ae as Mr. Kim’s successor

But, NIS is still thinking about “all options” in North Korea’s plan for who will take over after the current leader.

Miss Kim has been very visible in public since she first showed up at the end of 2022.

The NIS said that after looking at what people are doing and how much they respect Kim Ju Ae, she seems like the person most likely to take over.

“But we are watching for all options because Kim Jong Un is still young, healthy, and there are many things that can happen. ”

Miss Kim is said to be the second oldest child of the North Korean leader and is believed to be around 10 years old.

Kim Yung-ho, who is in charge of bringing North and South Korea together, said something similar about Mr Kim’s daughter at a meeting with reporters last month.

He said that people talking a lot about Kim Jong Un’s daughter shows that North Korea is trying to show who will take over as leader in the future, even though things are tough there.

People who watch North Korea have noticed that now they are calling Miss Kim a “respected” daughter instead of a “beloved” one. This change happened after her first public appearance in November 2022.

The word “respected” is only used for the most admired people in North Korea. Kim’s situation, he was called “respected comrade” only after it was certain he would be the future leader.

People in North Korea are taught that the Kims come from a special family and only they can be the leaders of the country. Kim wants to make sure he gives his position to the fourth generation.

Most recently, Miss Kim went with her father to see North Korea’s newest long-range missile, called the Hwasong-18. It is the most advanced missile they have right now.

She was with her father when the North launched its spy satellite into space last November. Pyongyang said that the Malligyong-1 would let Mr. Kim see the White House.

Experts believe that Mr. Kim is introducing his daughter, Miss Kim, to the public so that she can gain experience and credibility before leading in the future.

This could also be a way for Mr. Kim to change unfair beliefs in North Korea, which is a very male-dominated country that has never had a female leader.

In 2013, people first heard about Miss Kim when retired basketball player Dennis Rodman went to North Korea and caused a lot of talk.

Mr Rodman said he spent time with Mr. Kim’s family, relaxing by the ocean, and even held their baby.

The leader of North Korea keeps his family very private. He didn’t tell anyone about his wife, Ri Sol Ju, until some time after they got married.

  • North Korea bombards South Korea’s border island with artillery munitions

North Korea bombards South Korea’s border island with artillery munitions

North Korea shot over 200 artillery shells towards South Korea‘s Yeonpyeong island.

Later, South Korea told people to find safety on the island and then did practice shooting exercises there.

The South said the move is a “provocative act” and they disagree with it.

In 2010, artillery from North Korea shot many times at Yeonpyeong island, and four people died.

On Friday, bombs were shot between 9:00 and 11:00 in the morning. They did not go into South Korea because they landed in the area between the two countries.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff in South Korea said that the incident did not harm anyone or our military. But they also said that it could make the situation tense and threaten peace in Korea.

North Korea has been saying they are getting ready for war and now they are shelling. They say a war could happen anytime.

Officials on the nearby Baengnyeong Island also said that people have to leave the area.

The most recent event happened several months after North Korea stopped a military agreement with South Korea. The agreement was meant to make their relationship better.

The deal started to go bad after Pyongyang said they sent a spy satellite into space in November. This caused South Korea to stop some parts of the agreement and they said they would start doing surveillance flights along the border again.

Later, Pyongyang said it would stop trying to avoid military conflict on land, sea, and in the air. It will also send stronger armed forces and new military equipment to the border region.

North Korea broke the agreement several times by shooting missiles and firing weapons towards South Korea. North Korea shot artillery shells into the sea nine times in the year 2022. The most recent time was in December.

Some experts think that if Pyongyang stops following the deal, it may not change things very much.

“North Korea didn’t follow the agreement from the beginning, so there was always a chance of a small clash happening,” explained Jo Bee Yun from the Korea Institute for Defence Analysis.

Yeonpyeong island has a military base and about 2,000 people live there. It’s located 3km (2 miles) away from a disputed sea border in the Yellow Sea and 12km from the North Korean coast.

It has been a place where Korea’s navy has fought each other for many years.

In 2010, North Korea shot many shells at an island and killed two soldiers and two people who were not soldiers.

  • Man accused of attacking opposition politician in South Korea

Man accused of attacking opposition politician in South Korea

A man who is thought to have stabbed the opposition leader of South Korea was officially arrested for trying to kill him.

Kim, a man in his 60s, was caught by the police right after the attack and taken into custody.

Lee Jae-myung, the politician, is no longer in intensive care.

Lee got stabbed in the neck with a camping knife in the southern city of Busan. The attacker pretended to be someone asking for an autograph.

A doctor who operated on Lee said that he is getting better after the surgery. The surgery fixed a big blood vessel in his neck.

Professor Min Seung-kee said that he needs to keep an eye on the person because they are worried about them getting more infections or having problems after their surgery because of the injury they had.

It’s still not clear why the attack happened. Kim told reporters that he gave an eight-page note to the police explaining why he did it.

He also told the police that he planned to kill Lee, according to the Yonhap news agency.

The police found out that he had been following Lee since June last year, according to Yonhap.

Kim has strong political beliefs and purchased the knife on the internet. The police arrested the suspect, so they can keep holding him.

The stabbing surprised the country and made people wonder if important politicians are safe. Both Lee’s party and the country’s ruling party disapproved of it.

South Korea has very strict rules about owning guns and other weapons. Most important people usually do not have a lot of security protection.

The crime rate in the country is usually not very high, but there were more mass stabbing attacks last year. In the past, there have been many times when politicians were attacked with weapons.

Lee leads the main opposition party in Korea. He wants his party to win the most seats in the parliament in the April elections. He lost the presidential elections in 2022 by a very small amount of votes and wants to make a comeback. Yoon Suk Yeol’s conservative party won the presidential elections.

  • Man from South Korea imprisoned for glorifying North Korea in poetry

Man from South Korea imprisoned for glorifying North Korea in poetry

A court in South Korea has given a 68-year-old man a 14-month prison term for saying good things about North Korea in a poem.

Lee Yoon-seop wrote an article in 2016 that was published in North Korea’s state media, where he supported bringing North and South Korea together. South Korean media have reported on this.

He said that if North and South Korea joined together with North Korea’s system, people would get free housing, healthcare, and education.

He was found guilty for breaking a law against saying positive things about North Korea in public.

In the article Means of Unification, Lee said that if Korea is united, fewer people will die by suicide or have debt.

The poem won a contest in the North in November 2016.

In 2013, he expressed his admiration for North Korea’s military on the internet; nevertheless, in the following years, he published anti-state remarks on blogs and websites in South Korea.

On Monday, a court in Seoul said that he kept spreading a lot of propaganda that praised North Korea, the Korea Herald reported.

In 2013, he wrote positive things about North Korea’s military on the internet. Later, he wrote negative things about the government on South Korean websites.

The National Security Act in South Korea makes it illegal to support or promote groups that are against the government.

  • South Korea halts portion of North Korean military agreement

South Korea halts portion of North Korean military agreement

South Korea stopped parts of the 2018 deal with North Korea to reduce military tensions.

This happened after Pyongyang said they sent a spy satellite into space and it worked.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said that the launch put South Korea in danger.

Seoul said it will start flying surveillance planes again near the border with North Korea, even though there is an agreement not to do so.

Some experts say that these changes could make tensions worse.

Pyongyang launched a rocket on Tuesday. They said it had their Malligyong-1 spy satellite in it. They said the launch was successful.

The US and South Korea can’t tell if the launch worked or if the spy satellite is working, but they both really disapprove of it.

Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council, said that the decision could make the security situation in the region and beyond unstable.

North Korea is working on making a spy satellite as part of its military plan for the next five years. Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, talked about this plan in January 2021.

The technology could help North Korea watch where US and South Korean soldiers and weapons are on the Korean Peninsula, so it can see if there are any dangers coming.

Kim Jong Un watches a rocket launch from far away.

North Korea’s space agency, called the National Aerospace Technology Administration, said they launched a rocket to make their country stronger and protect themselves from their enemies’ military actions. Pyongyang said it wants to launch more spy satellites soon.

Some experts are not sure if the satellite is good enough to work well. Jang Young-geun from Korea Research Institute for National Strategy thinks the satellite’s camera probably can’t take detailed military pictures.

However, he said that having low resolution is still better than having no information at all. This is because any attack, no matter who it is aiming for, needs some information to be successful.

Ankit Panda, who knows a lot about nuclear policies, thinks that the satellite could make North Korea’s military stronger. But it could also make the situation in the Peninsula more stable.

“He said it could make Pyongyang calmer during crises. ” The country could use its satellites to check if the US and South Korea were really not increasing their troops to get ready for a big attack.

North is happy after two tries did not work.

This year, the North tried three times to launch a spy satellite into space. The first two tries in May and August didn’t work. Officials in South Korea said they think that North Korea got help from Russia in solving the problems that caused its earlier unsuccessful attempts.

When Kim Jong Un met Vladimir Putin at the Vostochny space centre in Russia’s far east in September, the Russian leader suggested he would assist Mr Kim in making satellites. The US and South Korea think that North Korea is giving weapons to Russia to use in Ukraine. They also believe that Russia might have agreed to help North Korea with their military knowledge in exchange.

But Panda said there was no proof that Pyongyang had gotten Russia’s help and used it. “North Korea tried launching a rocket for the third time. They have been working on their own space technology for a long time,” said Mr.

Jo Bee Yun, a researcher at the Korea Institute for Defence Analysis (KIDA), said that Russia didn’t have enough time to give “game-changing” technology, but they could give significant technology in the future.

Mr Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in signed a big agreement about their military in 2018. They did this to try to make their countries less tense and to stop a fight from happening.

The South Korean government recently said that the deal made it easy for them to be attacked because they couldn’t fly surveillance planes and drones near the border.

South Korea’s top leaders had a meeting very early on Wednesday, including the defense chiefs and cabinet members. Everyone agreed that the country should start watching the border again right away, and the President supports this decision.

Seoul is currently using US spy satellites to watch North Korea. But soon, they are going to launch their own satellite into space in November.

Some experts say that if the military agreement is stopped, it could make things worse and increase the chances of fights between countries.

He said that if Seoul did this, it could give them a reason to do more bad things.

But Jo Bee Yun from KIDA doesn’t think that stopping the activity would make things worse, because North Korea has been launching missiles often since 2022. “The fighting has started again. ” South Korea had to react at some point.

K-pop singer Kyuhyun injured by woman with knife on stage

A woman with a knife broke into a dressing room in a theatre in Seoul and hurt famous K-pop star Kyuhyun during a fight.

She entered the room at around 6:00 PM local time, as per the local news.

Kyuhyun from Super Junior was visiting his friends who are actors. He got a cut on his finger while trying to stop someone.

The 30-year-old woman has been taken into custody.

The police are trying to find out where she got the weapon and if she has ever been mentally ill before.

Local news said that she doesn’t have any relationship with Kyuhyun or the other actors who were there.

Kyuhyun got a small cut on his finger, but it was taken care of right away where he was. This was confirmed by the 35-year-old’s Antenna Music agency to South Korea‘s JoongAng Daily newspaper.

Kyuhyun is the main actor in a Korean version of a musical called Ben-Hur. It’s about a made-up Jewish hero who was wrongly accused of trying to kill someone by the Romans.

The actor-singer joined Super Junior, a very popular boy band in the country, in 2006.

Since that time, he has also become a musical actor.

  • Korean man, 82, suffers heart attack after choking on meal of ‘live octopus’

Korean man, 82, suffers heart attack after choking on meal of ‘live octopus’

An old man in South Korea had a heart attack because he choked on a live octopus. The octopus was still moving when he ate it and it is a popular food in that area.

The fire station in Gwangju received a call on Monday morning about a man who was choking on a piece of san-nakji, a type of food.

When the people who help first arrived at the place, the man’s heart stopped, and they tried to bring him back to life by doing CPR, said the official.

The official did not say if the man is still alive.

San-nakji is a type of small octopus that is cut and eaten raw. People in South Korea who live near the coast or visit seafood markets often enjoy eating it.

The dish is called “live octopus,” but that’s not completely true – the octopus is actually killed before it’s served, and its tentacles are cut into pieces.

However, the octopus is served right after cutting, and it is so fresh that its tentacles’ nerves are still active. This makes the octopus look like it is still alive as it moves on the plate.

San-nakji is usually eaten with sesame oil, sesame seeds, and occasionally ginger. It has a rubbery texture.

It showed up on a 2015 episode of Anthony Bourdain’s CNN show “Parts Unknown,” when the famous chef and TV host went to South Korea to try various things like soju, Korean fried chicken, and san-nakji. Bourdain used his chopsticks to remove a sticky tentacle from the plate.

The food dish we’re talking about has been in the news before. Local media has reported that there have been cases in the past where people have died after choking or being unable to breathe because of eating “live octopus. ”

In a well-known case called the “octopus murder,” a man from South Korea was given a life sentence in 2012 for supposedly killing his girlfriend and saying it was an accident involving san-nakji. However, in 2013, the Supreme Court found him not guilty because there wasn’t enough evidence.

  • South Korea supports Ghana with 22 Kia vehicles ahead of 2023 UN Ministerial Meetings

The Government of the Republic of South Korea has donated 22 KIA vehicles to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in support of Ghana’s preparations for the upcoming 2023 UN Ministerial Meetings scheduled for December.

This donation comprises twelve saloon vehicles and ten vans, which were officially handed over by Korea’s Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Jung-Taek Lim, during a ceremony at the Foreign Ministry on Monday, October 2, 2023.

In his remarks, Ambassador H.E. Jung-Taek Lim reiterated the commitment of the Korean government to strengthen its collaboration with Ghana in the United Nations and other international forums.

Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey and Ambassador H.E. Jung-Taek Lim

He expressed hope that these vehicles, in addition to the IT products provided in July of this year, would contribute to Ghana’s successful hosting of the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference in December.

On her part, the Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, who received the vehicles on behalf of the Government of Ghana, noted that “the occasion symbolises the strength of the relations between Ghana and the Republic of Korea and further underscores the importance Ghana attaches to the longstanding friendship”.

The Minister thanked the Government of Korea for extending support to Ghana in its preparations towards bringing the entire peacekeeping community into the country.

Madam Ayorkor Botchwey also took the opportunity to commend Ambassador Lim for his role in securing Korea’s support for Ghana for the upcoming 2023 UN Ministerial meetings in December.

UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meetings focus on securing concrete commitments from Member States to fill critical gaps, leverage new technologies and address key priorities to improve the operational effectiveness of peacekeeping missions.

With missions navigating unprecedented challenges and threats, this year’s event will focus on critical issues such as the protection of civilians, strategic communications and addressing misinformation and disinformation, safety and security, mental health of uniformed peacekeepers and the pivotal role of women in peacekeeping.

Highlighting the significance of the Ministerial Meeting taking place in Africa and the importance of partnerships, Atul Khare, Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support said:  “Ghana’s and Africa’s contributions to peacekeeping are advancing beyond troop contributions to offering a vital forum in which countries can unite and collaborate on innovative strategies to address current challenges and discuss the future of peacekeeping.  I look forward to the formation of partnerships amongst participants to enhance the effectiveness of our peacekeepers, elevate the quality of their medical care and foster environmentally responsible operations.”

“In addition to the myriad challenges currently before us, United Nations peace operations are also at a critical juncture in preventing and addressing misconduct as a central element of performance,” said Catherine Pollard, Under-Secretary-General for Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance.

In the lead-up to this year’s Ministerial Meeting, a series of preparatory meetings on key areas identified by UN Member States have set the stage for discussions.

These included preparatory conferences on women in peacekeeping operations, co-hosted by Bangladesh, Canada and Uruguay; mental health support for uniformed personnel, co-hosted by Ghana, Republic of Korea and the United Nations; and safety and security, co-hosted by Japan and Pakistan.  In October, a meeting on protection of civilians and strategic communications will take place in Kigali, co-hosted by Indonesia, Netherlands, Rwanda and the United Kingdom.

  • South Korea displays missiles, drones, and tanks in uncommon military parade

South Korea displays missiles, drones, and tanks in uncommon military parade

South Korea displayed its advanced weapons in a military parade yesterday. They drove tanks and missiles through the rainy streets of their capital, which was the first time in ten years for such an event.

A parade was held to celebrate the 75th Armed Forces Day, which is the day that marks the founding of the country’s military. This parade occurred while tensions on the Korean peninsula were increasing. South Korea, the United States, and Japan were forming closer relationships to protect themselves against North Korea’s advancing weapons program.

The event started in the morning with ceremonies and performances at the Seoul Air Base. President Yoon Suk Yeol gave a speech, warning Pyongyang not to use nuclear weapons.

Yoon said that if North Korea chooses to use nuclear weapons, the alliance between Seoul and Washington will respond strongly and it will result in the end of North Korea’s regime. Yoon spoke these words while it was raining.

The parade, which hasn’t happened in South Korea since 2013, took place in the afternoon. Soldiers and military vehicles marched through the center of Seoul, going past the city hall and historic Gwanghwamun Square. There were a lot of people standing along the roads in the rain, some of them wearing plastic ponchos and holding umbrellas.

According to the Ministry of National Defense, a lot of South Korean soldiers and over 300 US troops walked together in the event. Other activities during the event included a band playing military music, people holding flags, and the animals that represent each military group.

Displayed were some homemade equipment like flying robots, military vehicles and protective vehicles for carrying people. Soldiers in cars waved to the people as they drove past; some vehicles had the South Korean flag attached on the outside.

Peter Layton, who is a visiting fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute at Griffith University, mentioned that the parade sends a message to different countries like the United States, North Korea, and China. However, the main reason for the event is related to things happening inside the country itself.

The parade and Yoon’s presence show the Korean people that South Korea is now an important and powerful country on the global stage. The current president refers to it as a pivotal global power. It also improves how people see the Korean defense industry, which is doing very well in selling products to other countries while other parts of the economy are not doing well.

Yoon has said before that he wants South Korea to become one of the top four countries in the world for selling weapons. The top three countries right now are the US, Russia, and France. The industry has grown quickly, making $7 billion from selling defense products in 2021, as reported by the Export-Import Bank of Korea.

Layton said that the parade shows how South Korea and the US are still good friends and are becoming closer. It also shows that they are becoming closer with Japan too. This is happening because North Korea is testing more weapons.

Intelligence from around the world has also indicated since last year that Pyongyang might be getting ready to start nuclear testing again. Pictures taken from satellites have shown movement happening at its secret underground nuclear testing place.

In April of this year, Yoon and US President Joe Biden made an important agreement to prevent North Korean aggression. This agreement includes the US sending a submarine with nuclear weapons to South Korea, which hasn’t happened since the early 1980s.

In August, Yoon, Biden, and Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met for a very important meeting. They talked about doing new military exercises together and also agreed to have a hotline to communicate during crisis situations. This was the first time Biden invited foreign leaders to a place called Camp David in Maryland. Camp David is a location where previous presidents have had important meetings with other countries.

  • Famous South Korean Star Suga enlisted in Korean military

Famous South Korean Star Suga enlisted in Korean military

The famous South Korean celebrity Suga, who is part of the very popular boy band BTS, has announced on social media that he has started doing his required military duty.

The singer, Min Yoon-gi, is the third band member to join the army, after Jin and J-Hope.

“He said online that he will do his duty and come back reliably. ”

Because South Korea is still technically in a state of war with North Korea, all healthy men must join the army before they reach 28 years old.

For a while, there were rumors that the government might let the BTS group members skip their mandatory military service. This was because they had already contributed a lot to their country’s economy by earning billions of dollars. Some people believed that it would be better to let them continue working rather than interrupting their success.

But in October of last year, all seven members declared that they were all planning to join the military, starting with Jin, who is the oldest.

He started working in December 2022 and was sent to a training camp on the front line.

According to South Korea‘s Yonhap news agency, Suga has been declared unfit for regular combat duty and will instead work as a social service agent.

The news outlets said that the star’s different type of work was probably because he had to have surgery on his shoulder in 2020.

Suga wrote a message for his fans on WeVerse.

I made it this far because of you. “He said that the time has arrived,” he wrote.

“Make sure to be cautious of the cold autumn weather. ” Stay well and I look forward to seeing all of you in the year 2025.
    Renewing a contract

Suga is going to join the military soon, and we just found out that all seven members of BTS have agreed to stay with their music agency, Big Hit Music.

The company said earlier this week that they hope to have a time when BTS can promote together with everyone in 2025.

At the same time, fans who like the female group Blackpink are expecting similar information.

The group’s contract with YG Entertainment ended earlier this year and there has been no news of them signing a new contract with the company after their world tour ended on September 17th.

The value of YG stocks dropped by 13. 28% on Thursday because South Korean media said that three out of the four members of Blackpink (Jennie, Lisa, and Jisoo) plan to join other music companies, while still being part of Blackpink for six months every year.

YG responded to the reports by saying that Blackpink’s contract renewal has not been confirmed yet and they are talking about it.

  • South Korea conducts narcotics raids at US military camp

South Korea conducts narcotics raids at US military camp

South Korean police are looking into the case of 17 American soldiers and five others who are suspected of smuggling or using fake marijuana through military mail.

This means that there were raids in at least two US army bases in May, including Camp Humphreys, which is the biggest base outside of the US.

A person from the Philippines and someone from South Korea were taken into custody while lawyers are studying the evidence for all 22 people involved.

A suggestion from a branch of the US Army led to a four-month investigation by Korean authorities.

According to Cha Min-seok, a senior detective in South Korea, US media reported that it was one of the biggest incidents in recent years involving American soldiers.

South Korean police and the US Army’s Criminal Investigation Division worked together to search the homes of 22 suspects. During these raids, they discovered 77g (2. 7oz) of synthetic cannabis, over 4kg of “mixed liquids” used for vaping, and a total of $12,850 (£10,440) in cash.

They are said to have brought synthetic marijuana (also called K2 and Spice) into the country using the US military’s postal service.

Seven people, which includes five soldiers, are believed to have taken part in selling drugs. Out of the total number, 12 were drug users and three acted as mediators. The police told the BBC that the husband or wife of a soldier and the person engaged to another soldier are also part of this.

The police said that there are 17 soldiers right now at Camp Humphreys, which is about 48km (30 miles) south of Seoul. There are also some soldiers at Camp Casey, an army outpost about 40km north of Seoul.

They supposedly shared the drugs at the locations and talked through Snapchat.

The United States Forces in Korea said on Wednesday that they know about the investigation. There are no soldiers being held or confined right now, according to a statement.

Synthetic marijuana is created to imitate THC, the primary compound in marijuana that causes mind-altering effects.

Although it has similar effects to cannabis, it is usually stronger and can cause harmful health issues like sudden episodes of mental illness, extreme paranoia, and intense restlessness.

The police said it’s hard to find because people often use it in liquid form with legal e-cigarette devices.

In South Korea, people who are found guilty of selling marijuana can be sentenced to prison for a minimum of five years and possibly for the rest of their lives. Having drugs can lead to getting a punishment of up to five years in jail or having to pay around 50 million won ($37,200; £30,300).

7 months in post and not a single victory – South Korea’s coach performance

South Korea is set to take on Saudi Arabia in a friendly match at St James’ Park, the home of Newcastle United, on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klinsmann, who is 59 years old, is facing significant pressure following a dismal beginning to his tenure as coach. Despite being appointed in February, Klinsmann’s South Korea team has yet to secure a victory in their last five matches, suffering two losses and three draws.

Their most recent letdown was a lacklustre 0-0 draw against a similarly struggling Wales team last week. Following this match, captain Son Heung-min came to Klinsmann’s defence.

“I understand where fans come from, as someone who’s been on the national team for a long time,” the Tottenham Hotspur forward told reporters in Cardiff.

“I am not saying the coach is always right, but I also don’t think fans are always right either.”

South Korea reached the last 16 of the Qatar World Cup before being outclassed 4-1 by Brazil, after which coach Paulo Bento said he would not carry on.

The Korea Football Association launched a protracted search for his successor before settling on Klinsmann, a World Cup winner as a player but whose coaching career has never hit the same heights.

Many South Korean fans were underwhelmed by the appointment and performances since have only added to those misgivings.

Klinsmann, whose previous coaching job was a short stint with Hertha Berlin more than three years ago, started with a 2-2 home draw with Colombia, before home defeats to Uruguay and Peru.

Then came a 1-1 home draw with El Salvador and the goalless stalemate with Wales, with the result and listless nature of the performance piling the pressure on former United States coach Klinsmann.

Despite boasting Asia’s finest attacker in the talisman Son, South Korea conjured up just one shot on target against the 35th-ranked Welsh.

South Korea have scored four times in five matches under Klinsmann, who was a prolific striker as a player in his pomp.

    Negligent?

However, Klinsmann’s actions off the field have also fueled frustration among fans. South Korean supporters and media have accused him of breaking a promise to relocate to the country, asserting that he spends more time in his California residence than in South Korea.

Critics have pointed to Klinsmann’s media responsibilities unrelated to his role as South Korea’s coach as further evidence of his perceived lack of commitment to the job.

Choi Dong-ho, a commentator and director of the Centre for Sports Culture research group, said Klinsmann appeared “negligent”.

“Considering his limited familiarity with Korean players, he should at least be watching all K League games in person rather than being ‘briefed’ by other coaches while he stays abroad,” said Choi.

Failure to beat Saudi Arabia, who are ranked 54th in the world to South Korea’s 28th, would leave Klinsmann clinging to his job after less than seven months in charge.

“Klinsmann’s seeming lack of urgency in light of poor performances hasn’t sat well with South Korean fans, many of whom have already begun calling for the German tactician’s head,” Yonhap news agency said on Monday.

The Asian Cup, which will be held in Qatar in January-February, is where Klinsmann says his team is currently in transition.

“How prepared are they mentally for a big tournament? Can they deal with all the pressure, all the expectations and all those different elements?” Klinsmann said after the Wales draw.

“It’s a growing process,” he added.

“And I’m pleased overall with what the players showed, and we’ll keep growing game by game.”

Kim Jong Un of North Korea allegedly travelling to Russia – South Korean media

Per South Korean media and government officials, it seems that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is currently travelling on a train towards Russia.

Russia and North Korea have not confirmed the meeting officially.

The newest news in the media is that Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin are likely to have a meeting soon to talk about weapons. The exact date and place of this meeting have not been announced yet.

If the visit happens, it would be Kim’s first trip to another country since the Covid-19 pandemic started. North Korea, which has closed its borders for most of the past three years, has only recently started to loosen travel restrictions.

Kim has only gone on 10 trips since taking control in 2011. All of those happened in 2018 and 2019, when the leader of North Korea talked with then-US President Donald Trump about his nuclear weapons and missiles. They had three meetings in Singapore, Hanoi, and the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea.

Kim also went to China four times during those two years to meet with the leader of China, Xi Jinping. He also met with Putin once in Vladivostok in April 2019. Afterwards, we went on a trip to the DMZ in 2018 to meet with the South Korean President at that time, Moon Jae-in.

Vladivostok is located 130 km (80 miles) away from the North Korea border.

The leader of North Korea likes to travel in a fancy train that is protected and his father also did the same. However, most of his trips to other countries are not done by train. Three out of the nine trips were taken by airplanes, and two trips, which were both to the DMZ, were done by car.

The Russian defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, went to Pyongyang in July to ask them to sell artillery ammunition.

Jake Sullivan, a person from the White House who helps keep the country safe, said that North Korea will face consequences if it makes a deal with Russia to get weapons. He didn’t say exactly what those consequences would be.

North Korea is already being punished by the United Nations and the United States for having weapons of mass destruction.

The possible meeting between Putin and Kim could allow Pyongyang to obtain weapons that have been banned from them for 20 years, especially for their nuclear missile program.

Additionally, this comes after over a year and a half of fighting in Ukraine, which has significantly damaged the Russian military and caused a shortage of resources.

  • South Korean teachers stage large-scale protests to draw attention to parental pressure

South Korean teachers stage large-scale protests to draw attention to parental pressure

Many teachers in South Korea are protesting because a teacher died, and people believe it was because of the stress of being an educator in a country with a very demanding education system.

Upset teachers are saying they are dealing with very tough requests and even mistreatment from upset parents. They want laws to change and more safeguards to protect them.

About 200,000 people joined a protest rally on Saturday, according to the Korean Federation of Teachers’ Associations, which got this information from the event organizers. On Monday, around 50,000 teachers didn’t go to work and came together in the capital city to remember a teacher who passed away, as told by the organizers. This happened even though the authorities had warned them that striking would be seen as against the law.

The teacher who taught the first grade class at Seoi elementary school in Seoul passed away on the school grounds on July 18. This information was announced in August by the Education Ministry and the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, who looked into the incident. They did not give a name to the teacher.

Two days after the teacher died, the head education officer in the city, Cho Hee-yeon, said the teacher had sadly chosen to end her own life, which is a common way of saying suicide in South Korea.

Cho said the police are still looking into the matter, but admitted that teachers don’t have legal protection for their educational activities. He suggested taking special actions to give teachers more legal and institutional safeguards.

Education authorities investigated and responded to rumors on social media. The rumors included a claim that a disagreement between two students contributed to the teacher’s death.

In August, the teacher had a meeting with the parents of both students involved, according to the education vice minister. The teacher got many calls from a parent and was worried and uneasy that the parent knew their personal phone number.

However, the deputy minister also mentioned that it was still uncertain if the parent had used any mean words against the teacher.

According to the teacher’s diary and interviews with their colleagues, the investigation discovered that the teacher had a difficult student and was struggling to manage the homeroom. Additionally, the teacher had a high workload because it was the start of the semester.

The authorities didn’t give any more information about why the teacher died or what happened before it.

The death made many teachers in South Korea realize that they could no longer tolerate the lack of discipline in their classrooms. They have been afraid to enforce rules because they were scared of getting punished themselves. Many teachers have been committing suicide recently, which has made people even more angry. People have been protesting for several weeks before Monday’s strike because of these incidents.

According to government information, 100 teachers working in South Korean public schools took their own lives during the time period from January 2018 to June 2023. Most of these teachers were from elementary schools.

The information does not say what caused their deaths, and we don’t know if their work was a reason for their suicides. But a lot of people in the education field believe that a law about child abuse that was made in 2014 is to blame.

According to the law, anyone who thinks a child is being hurt can tell the authorities about it, without having to prove it. Officials might examine the accusation by going to the place where the abuse supposedly occurred, like the schools, and talking to people who are involved in the situation.

Teachers say that sometimes parents can be unfairly angry with them because they think their child has been treated unfairly. This can put their jobs at risk.

In a survey done by a Korean teachers’ union, over 60% of the 6,243 people who answered said they either had been reported for hurting a child or knew a teacher who had been reported.

A woman, who CNN isn’t naming to protect her privacy, said that the current law on preventing child abuse limits what teachers can teach and guide in the classroom.

“The woman, who claimed to be an elementary school teacher, stated that although most teachers and parents are good, there are some parents who wrongly use this law to accuse teachers of child abuse. ”

Another woman who was also part of the strike did not want to give her name. She mentioned that she has been teaching for 10 years.

“The teacher said to CNN that teaching children in the classroom is very hard because the teachers are not given the power to make decisions. ” “Even though the Child Abuse Prevention Act was made to help keep children safe, its guidelines are not clear. ”

She said that lots of teachers feel very stressed because they are afraid of being told on by upset parents, even for giving small punishments to students or other types of discipline in class.

Officials have tried to make teachers feel better by recognizing and understanding their complaints.

Cho, who is in charge of the Seoul education office, told teachers to not make Monday a chaotic day. He suggested creating a group to investigate the teacher’s death at Seoi elementary school and make sure students can still learn while also finding a way to remember the teacher who died.

However, he spoke in a friendlier way in another statement on Sunday. He said that he had heard the desperate pleas of teachers and that he would not blame anyone involved in the strike on Monday.

The ministry has made a plan to make teaching rights stronger and better protect teachers. They also want to fix the system that has caused problems for teachers. The ministry has asked the government to make laws quickly, so that they can differentiate between proper teaching and child abuse crimes.

President Yoon Suk Yeol said in a meeting on Monday that we should listen to the concerns of teachers and work hard to improve the teaching profession and make education better.

However, people who protest and teachers are saying that they will not be happy until changes are made to the law against child abuse. According to Reuters, one of the protest groups called Everyone Together As One stated that they will keep the teachers safe and make improvements to prevent any teacher from deciding to end their life.

At the school where the teacher passed away, people placed funeral wreaths and white flowers outside. They also wrote messages on sticky notes on a wall.

The protests and attention given to teacher suicides show that South Korea has bigger mental health problems and that people have been criticizing its difficult education system for a long time.

South Korea has the highest rate of people committing suicide compared to other countries in the OECD. This rate is going up especially among teenagers and young adults in their twenties, as stated by the health ministry of the country.

Many teenagers worry a lot about their education. In Korea, most students go to normal school during the day and then attend private tutoring classes in the evenings. They also study on their own until very late at night.

This stress also affects parents, who begin spending money on their children’s education from a very young age. According to the Ministry of Education, South Koreans spent 26 trillion won (about $20 billion) on private education in 2022.

In a recent survey conducted by the Korean Federation of Teachers’ Associations, only 23. 6% of teachers expressed happiness with their jobs. This is the lowest percentage ever recorded, as it has dropped from almost 68% in 2007. The survey included 6,751 teachers working in various educational institutions from kindergarten to universities nationwide.

  • Suspected Chinese rebel travels to South Korea on jet ski hundreds of miles away

Suspected Chinese rebel travels to South Korea on jet ski hundreds of miles away

A person who was riding a jet ski was captured by South Korea for supposedly reaching the country without permission. According to activists, this person is a well-known Chinese critic who traveled a long distance on the sea to run away from China.

A man in his 30s was caught on August 16th by the Incheon Coast Guard near Incheon, which is along South Korea’s west coast and close to the capital city of Seoul.

He is believed to have traveled from a province in eastern China, which is about 400 kilometers or 250 miles away from Incheon across the Yellow Sea. The man had a helmet, binoculars, and a compass with him. He also tied five fuel tanks to the jet ski, which could hold 25 liters (6. 6 gallons) of fuel each.

When he arrived in South Korea, he got stuck on a muddy shore and had to call for help from an emergency line, according to the statement. He got arrested and his case was sent to Incheon prosecutors on Tuesday, as per the coast guard’s statement to CNN.

The South Korean government has not told anyone the man’s name. CNN cannot confirm who he is on their own.

But, according to Dialogue China, a group created by experienced Chinese activists who collaborate with other protesters, the person who was arrested is Kwon Pyong, a Chinese activist.

Kwon went to Iowa State University in the United States and then came back to China. He has always openly disagreed with the government’s strict rules and control over what people can say. According to Freedom House, he spoke against human rights violations on social media and took part in Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests in 2014.

In August 2016, he posted a picture on social media where he was wearing a T-shirt with mean words for Chinese leader Xi Jinping, like “Xitler. ” However, the tweet is no longer there.

According to Freedom House, he was arrested by the police and charged for what he posted on social media just a month later. His lawyers were removed by Chinese authorities a few days before his trial started.

Lee Dae-seon, an activist with Dialogue China in South Korea, stated that Kwon was sent to prison but later released in March 2019. The two people had been talking since August 2019. Kwon said he wants to go to another country to find safety.

Lee said that Kwon told him he was prepared to leave China and go to South Korea. However, Lee was unsure of the method Kwon would use to arrive there.

“On August 16, he phoned me right after the coast guard rescued him and I went to visit him yesterday,” Lee informed CNN on Wednesday. He wants to go to another country. He went to Iowa State University, which is why he can speak English. He would like to visit a country where people speak English.

“He said that he broke the immigration law because he was forced to do so by the Chinese government. He had no other option because they were investigating him politically, treating him unfairly in court, and closely watching him. ”

In recent years, China under Xi’s rule has increasingly limited what people can say and share on social media and other websites. Xi Jinping’s third term as leader caused a lot of anger and protests because of the country’s strict zero-Covid policy and ineffective lockdowns. As a response, the authorities cracked down on the protests by increasing surveillance and detaining protesters for a long time.

  • Kim Jong Un observes missile launch as regional rivals start collaborative military drills

Kim Jong Un observes missile launch as regional rivals start collaborative military drills

Days after its rivals in the region staged a historic summit, and as joint military drills between the US and South Korea begin nearby, North Korean official media revealed pictures of its leader Kim Jong Un inspecting a missile launch on Monday.

Kim was reportedly present to see the launch of strategic cruise missiles from a patrol ship that is a part of the North Korean Navy’s East Sea Fleet, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Kim was on board the patrol ship as it was examined for armaments and combat readiness. According to KCNA, Kim “highly praised the ship for maintaining high mobility and mighty striking power and constant preparedness for combat to cope with sudden situation.”

The missile test, it was stated, showed off the ship’s capabilities and trained the sailors for “carrying out the attack mission in actual war.”

Kim can be seen in photos published by KCNA, standing on the ship’s deck next to uniformed sailors while wearing a white and black outfit. Other images capture the actual test, in which a missile is seen launching from a ship in a cloud of smoke.

While the article did not mention the test’s date, KCNA published the images on Monday, the first day of the US and South Korea’s ten-day, extensive joint military exercises.

In response to the rising risks in the Indo-Pacific region and North Korea’s quick expansion of its own nuclear testing programme, the two nations have recently boosted their military and economic cooperation.

According to South Korean authorities, suspected North Korean hackers allegedly targeted a company involved in the exercises on Sunday, just before the joint manoeuvres started. However, the security system stopped them, and no military-related data was taken. The US military and South Korean officials are currently investigating the hacking attempt.

Seoul also reacted to the North Korean missile exercise on Monday, labelling state media claims as “exaggerated and in many cases different from the facts.” The Joint Chiefs of Staff of the nation stated that Seoul and Washington were both keeping an eye on Pyongyang’s activities and that the South Korean military was prepared to “respond to any provocation by North Korea.”

After making a commitment to forge a stronger alliance during the first-ever stand-alone trilateral summit on Friday at Camp David in the US, the leaders of South Korea, Japan, and the US conducted a missile test shortly after.

Following their meeting, the three presidents unveiled a new yearly trilateral summit, a three-way hotline, and an agreement to hold yearly military drills and exchange intelligence.

The summit was a show of force against China’s military and economic aggressiveness and North Korea’s provocative behaviour, even though it did not result in a three-way collective defence agreement.

The three presidents reaffirmed their call for North Korea to denuclearize in their joint statement, asking it to “abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes,” and denouncing its “unprecedented number of ballistic missile launches.”

South Korea’s endangered lioness shot and killed after escaping farm

Local authorities in South Korea said that a threatened lioness was shot dead on Monday, an hour after escaping a private farm.

In North Gyeongsang Province’s Goryeong county, around 300 kilometres (186 miles) south of the capital Seoul, the lioness broke out of her cage on Monday morning, according to a county official. Over 30,000 people live in this rugged region.

The regional fire service reported that the escape led to a search operation involving 127 police officers and 26 firefighters. Authorities issued a warning and advising citizens to avoid the neighbouring Bukdu mountain.

The lioness was shot dead in the woods approximately four to five kilometres (about 2.5 to 3.1 miles) from the property, the county official said, roughly an hour after the escape was discovered.

Before she was killed, the lioness can be seen gazing out from a tangle of twigs and leaves in photos issued by the fire service.

According to the county administrator, the private property also has cows but no other lions or lionesses.

An spokesperson from the organisation told CNN that the lioness had been listed as an internationally endangered species with the Daegu Regional Environmental Office.

The office, which also inspects the animals’ housing conditions, must be informed of any transfer and death of a registered animal, the official continued. The date of this lioness’ most recent examination is unknown.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, lions are currently classified as “vulnerable” because of habitat loss, the extinction of prey species, trophy hunting, and human conflict.

Some victims reportedly suffered stab wounds, while others were reportedly struck by the assailant’s vehicle.

Later, the suspect was taken into custody there. Uncertainty surrounds the attack’s motive.

The attack was referred to as a “rampage” by local media.

Women’s World Cup: South Korea suffers defeat to Colombia

Colombia made a strong start to their Women’s World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Korea in Sydney.

Catalina Usme opened the scoring from the penalty spot, and 18-year-old Linda Caicedo added another goal in the 39th minute.

The match was also notable for the introduction of South Korea substitute Casey Phair, who became the youngest-ever player at a Women’s World Cup.

Aged just 16 years and 26 days, Phair broke the previous record held by Nigeria’s Ifeanyi Chiejine, who played at the World Cup in 1999 at the age of 16 years and 34 days.

Although born in South Korea, Phair moved to the United States when she was only a month old.

Despite her young age, South Korea’s coach Colin Bell had expressed confidence in Phair, stating that she would be a valuable member of the squad. Phair came on as a substitute for Choe Yuri as South Korea pushed for a comeback in the game.

“We’re taking care of her. She’s taken very well to the team. She’s selected because I think she can help the team now, like every other player. She is going not as a passenger but as a valuable member of the squad.”

Colombia took the lead against South Korea after Shim Seo-yeon was penalized for a handball in the area, and Catalina Usme successfully converted the penalty kick.

Shortly after, Linda Caicedo extended Colombia’s lead by showcasing her skills, starting from midfield, cutting in from the left, and delivering a well-curled shot past goalkeeper Yoon Young-geul.

With this victory, Colombia now shares the top spot in Group H with Germany, who secured an impressive 6-0 win against Morocco in their opening match. Both teams have accumulated three points in the group standings.

All teams participating in the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand have completed their opening matches. England is scheduled to face Denmark in their second Group D match on Friday. Sarina Wiegman’s team began their tournament with a 1-0 victory over Haiti.

  • Kim launches missile test as show of might as the US dispatches submarine to South Korea

Kim launches missile test as show of might as the US dispatches submarine to South Korea

In an apparent protest against the deployment of US Navy vessels in the region, North Korea has fired at least one ballistic missile into the ocean.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea withheld information regarding the missile’s launch location and flight duration.

They asserted that the launch occurred just hours after the USS Annapolis, a nuclear-powered US submarine, docked at Jeju Island, the largest island in South Korea.

The US has steadily increased its presence in the waters east of the Korean peninsula, part of its own show of force amid signs of Pyongyang’s growing willingness to conduct nuclear attacks.

Just last week, a nuclear-armed submarine, the USS Kentucky, became the first such vessel to come to South Korea in more than forty years.

North Korea responded in much the same way, again test-firing ballistic and cruise missiles in an apparent attempt to demonstrate its capacity to strike both the US vessels and South Korean territory.

The tests were accompanied by strong words from despotic leader Kim Jong-un, who warned such increased presence would likely meet the hermit kingdom’s criteria for a nuclear attack.

Both Korean nations have continued to ramp up military drills in recent months.

Experts have warned that further proof-testing of new missile designs within North Korean territory also risks contaminating the country’s water supply.

Dr Olli Heinonen, formerly director general of nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency, previously said: ‘Water from melting snow and rain can enter in through cracks and wash out fission products and plutonium.

‘It can transport it with the groundwater, into a small river passing the [test] site, and on to agricultural sites and towns downstream.’

He added: ‘Such contamination could enter into food chains and accumulate in agriculture products, fish, meat and eventually in people.’

In the 1990s, a devastating famine is estimated to have killed as many as three million people in North Korea.

According to testimony from people living under the Kim regime, the situation is now almost as dire as it was then, following the government’s decision to seal its borders in 2020, cutting off vital supplies.

Nuclear contamination would further exacerbate food shortages in a country where, due to the government’s strict informational policing, an unknown portion of some 26 million people are likely facing starvation.

  • North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles – South Korea

North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles – South Korea

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of South Korea have reported that North Korea has fired two short-range ballistic missiles that have landed in the water between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

JCS said that the missiles were fired early on Wednesday local time from North Korea’s Sunan region. The missiles fell in the water after travelling roughly 550 kilometres each, it continued.

The US and South Korean intelligence agencies are examining the specifics of these missiles, according to JCS.

Japan’s government also described the two missiles in a statement, saying that they fell outside of its exclusive economic zone.

The launches follow a period of heightened tensions on the peninsula.

On Tuesday, a nuclear-capable US Navy ballistic missile submarine made a port call in South Korea. The presence of the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine in the South Korean port city of Busan was announced by the country’s Defense Ministry.

Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and a senior official in her own right, said in a statement Monday the deployment of a US ballistic missile submarine to the peninsula would damage already fractured lines of communication between the two sides.

The arrival of the submarine comes after North Korea last week tested what it said was an advanced long range missile and threatened to shoot down US military reconnaissance aircraft engaging in what it called “hostile espionage” activities near its territory.

South Korea and the US also held their inaugural meeting in Seoul on Tuesday of the Nuclear Consultative Group, a joint panel set up by the countries’ leaders at a summit in Washington in April.

  • Japan, others conduct joint drills after N. Korea’s ICBM launch

Japan, others conduct joint drills after N. Korea’s ICBM launch

Japan, South Korea, and the United States have conducted a joint naval missile defense exercise in response to North Korea’s “nuclear and missile threats,” following the recent launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) by Pyongyang.

On Sunday, the joint drill took place in international waters between South Korea and Japan, involving destroyers equipped with Aegis radar systems from all three countries, as confirmed by the South Korean Navy.

During the exercise, naval officers practiced procedures to detect and track a computer-simulated ballistic target while sharing relevant information.

In response to recent events, North Korea launched its latest Hwasong-18 missile from the east coast on Wednesday, considering it a “strong practical warning” to its adversaries. The launch followed heated complaints from North Korea about US spy planes flying over its exclusive economic zone waters and condemning the visit of a US nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine to South Korea. Pyongyang also threatened to take further actions in response.

The ICBM launch received strong condemnation from Seoul, Tokyo, and Washington, who deemed it a “clear, flagrant violation” of numerous United Nations Security Council resolutions, posing a serious threat to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and beyond.

The South Korean Navy stated that Sunday’s joint drills provided a valuable opportunity to enhance their military’s response capabilities against ballistic missiles while fostering improved security cooperation among South Korea, Japan, and the US.

“We will effectively respond to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats with our military’s strong response system and the trilateral cooperation,” it added.

Efforts to enhance information-sharing on North Korea’s missiles have been underway among the US and its Asian allies.

Currently, South Korea and Japan are individually connected to US radar systems but lack direct links with each other’s systems.

  • Over 26 people died as result of South Korea’s severe rainstorms and landslides

Over 26 people died as result of South Korea’s severe rainstorms and landslides

Due to severe rain that produced landslides and flash floods, 26 people have perished in South Korea, and hundreds more people have had to leave their homes.

According to the nation’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety, nine people have been hurt by the rain, while ten more are still unaccounted for.

According to the government, 16 fatalities were reported in the nation’s North Gyeongsang province, which is located on the Korean Peninsula’s eastern coast. Landslides killed the majority of those people there.

Public roads, houses and farm fields have also been damaged by the severe flooding, it added.

In the South Chungcheong Province city of Nonsan, two people died Friday after their building collapsed due to a landslide, YonhapNews Agencyreported.

Across South Korea, more than 5,566 people were forced to evacuate their homes and seek temporary shelter as of early Sunday, the ministry said. In addition, some 8,300 households in four provinces are experiencing power outages, according to Yonhap.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo ordered authorities to evacuate those in landslide-prone regions and to carry out rescue efforts, according to the South Korean news agency.

Last year, the South Korean capital Seoul logged record downpours that inundated homes, roads and subways, killing at least nine people.

Scientists have warned the frequency and intensity of heavy rainfall is increasing across East Asia as the human-caused climate crisis accelerates the probability of extreme weather events.

The newest round of heavy rains in South Korea come just days after devastating floods wreaked havoc in neighboring Japan, killing at least six people and injuring 19.

Torrential rain in southwestern Japan prompted the country’s weather agency to issue emergency warnings at the start of the week for the Fukuoka and Oita prefectures, on Kyushu, the country’s third largest island.

Earlier this month, heavy downpours also caused flooding in southwest China, killing at least 15 people in the city of Chongqing.

China’s top official implores Japan and South Korea to support Beijing and’revitalize Asia’

Amid escalating tensions between Beijing and the two close-by American allies, China’s top diplomat has encouraged Japan and South Korea to create a feeling of “strategic autonomy” from the West and work with Beijing to “revitalise Asia.”

Wang Yi made his remarks on Monday as Japan and South Korea forged deeper connections with the United States and repaired their relationships as a result of shared worries about Beijing’s expanding influence and aggression in the region.

In a video posted by Chinese official media, Wang claimed that most Americans and Europeans are unable to distinguish between China, Japan, and South Korea while they are in attendance at a trilateral summit in the eastern seaside city of Qingdao.

“No matter how blonde you dye your hair, how sharp you shape your nose, you can never become a European or American, you can never become a Westerner,” Wang said. “We must know where our roots lie.”

Wang called for Japan and South Korean to work together with China to “prosper together, revitalize East Asia, revitalize Asia and benefit the world.”

Wang was speaking on the sidelines of the International Forum for Trilateral Cooperation, an annual event organized by Beijing, Tokyo and Seoul since 2011.

On Monday, Wang also addressed the forum’s opening ceremony in an effort to “send a clear signal” of the potential for thethree neighbor’s regrouping, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In his opening remarks, Wang called for Japan and South Korea to “promote inclusive Asian values, foster a sense of strategic autonomy, maintain regional unity and stability, resist the return of the Cold War mentality and be free of the coercion of bullying and hegemony,” the statement said.

“The fate of the region is firmly in our own hands,” Wang was quoted as saying.

Xi Jinping, China’s most powerful leader in decades, has pushed to expand Beijing’s role on the world stage with an increasingly assertive foreign policy that has fueled tensions with many of its neighbors and the West.

In recent years, the Biden administration has stepped up efforts to unite allies and like-minded partners to counter China’s rising influence in the Pacific, including with South Korea and Japan, two of its most important allies in Asia.

Their trilateral ties are furthered strengthened by security concerns about North Korea. The three countries have conducted joint military drills this year to boost their coordination against increasing North Korean missile threats.

They’ve also issued joint statements on tensions in the Taiwan Strait – an area both Tokyo and Seoul say is vital to their respective security – which drew the ire of Beijing.

In a thinly veiled swipe at the US, Wang on Monday accused “certain major powers outside the region” of “exaggerating ideological differences” to saw confrontation and division, in order to seek geopolitical gains, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

“If this trend is allowed to develop, it will not only seriously interfere with the smooth progress of trilateral cooperation, but also aggravate tension and confrontation in the region,” Wang added.

South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin and Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa addressed the event via video link, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

In a groundbreaking moment for South Korea, the android robot EveR 6 assumed the role of conductor during a performance by the country’s national orchestra in Seoul.

Created by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, this two-armed robot, featuring a humanoid face, made its debut at the National Theater of Korea.

The robot captivated the audience as it began the show by bowing and then skillfully directing the musicians with its arm movements, controlling the tempo of the live performance.

“Movements by a conductor are very detailed,” Choi Soo-yeoul, who led Friday’s performance alongside the robot, said.

“The robot was able to present such detailed moves much better than I had imagined.”

According to Choi, a “critical weakness” of EveR 6 is its inability to listen. While the robot’s movements were flawless in maintaining the rhythm, Lee Young-ju, an audience member knowledgeable in traditional Korean music, noted that it lacked the essence of “breath” – the capacity to keep the orchestra synchronized and responsive, which is vital in a performance.

Lee emphasized that collective and immediate engagement is essential for a successful orchestral presentation.

“It seemed there was some work to be done for the robot to do the job,” Lee said.
