  • Elon Musk sells X for $33 billion

Elon Musk sells X for $33 billion

On Friday evening, Elon Musk shared that he has sold his social media company, X, to his AI firm, xAI. The sale is valued at $45 billion, which is a bit more than what he originally spent on X in 2022. However, the deal also includes $12 billion in debt.

Musk announced on X that the transaction now places the company’s worth at $33 billion.

“xAI and X’s futures are intertwined,” Musk said in a post on X. “Today, we officially take the step to combine the data, models, compute, distribution and talent. This combination will unlock immense potential by blending xAI’s advanced AI capability and expertise with X’s massive reach.”

Elon Musk has not announced any immediate changes to X, though xAI’s Grok chatbot is already integrated into the platform. He stated that merging the two companies would create “smarter, more meaningful experiences” and revealed that their combined value is now $80 billion.

Since buying X (formerly Twitter) in 2022, Musk has introduced major changes, including laying off 80% of the workforce, altering the verification system, and reinstating accounts that were previously banned. These decisions led to an advertiser exodus and a significant drop in the company’s value.

Although X is now worth less than what Musk originally paid, it has regained some of its lost value. Investment firm Fidelity estimated in October that X had lost nearly 80% of its original worth, but by December, it had recovered to about 30% of its purchase price.

Musk’s sale of X to xAI comes at a time when he is facing scrutiny for his role in the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, raising concerns about whether he is fully focused on his companies, particularly Tesla.

Additionally, Musk has been positioning himself as a key player in artificial intelligence, an area of interest for both the tech industry and the Trump administration. Earlier this year, he led a group of investors in an attempt to buy OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, for nearly $100 billion, intensifying his long-running rivalry with OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman.

While it is unclear how merging X with xAI will advance Musk’s AI ambitions, the integration could help xAI introduce its latest AI models and features to a wider audience more quickly.

A significant reversal of X’s fortunes
Big advertisers, who had largely abandoned X after hate speech surged on the platform and ads were seen running alongside pro-Nazi content, have begun to return. (X made several pro-Nazi accounts ineligible for ads following advertiser departures.) Amazon and Apple are both reportedly reinvesting in X campaigns again, a remarkable endorsement from two brands with mass appeal.

The brand’s stabilization helped a group of bondholders, who had been deep underwater in their investments, sell billions of dollars in their X debt holdings at 97 cents on the dollar earlier this month — albeit with exceedingly high interest rates — according to several recent reports.

Bloomberg in February reported that X was in talks to raise money that would value the company at $44 billion. It’s not clear what came of those talks and why xAI is valuing X at less than it could reportedly fetch from investors. X needs to pay down its massive debt load, which Musk on Friday said totals $12 billion.

A big part of why X’s valuation has rebounded in recent months is xAI, which X reportedly held a stake in. Last month, xAI was seeking a $75 billion valuation in a funding round, according to Bloomberg.

But the biggest factor in X’s stunning bounce-back is almost certainly Musk himself: Musk’s elevation to a special government employee under President Donald Trump has empowered the world’s richest person with large sway over the operations of the federal government, which he has rapidly sought to reshape.

Investors putting their money into X may be relying more on Elon Musk’s leadership than the company’s actual business performance. Over the past year, Musk has reshaped X into a platform that strongly supports former President Donald Trump, frequently using it to promote his campaign.

With an audience of 200 million followers, Musk has shared controversial views on immigration policies under the Biden administration and often speaks out against progressive movements, using the term “woke mind virus,” which some conservatives use to criticize liberal ideologies.

Now that Trump is back in office and Musk holds a position in the government, X has once again become a major platform for tracking and engaging with the administration. Musk has also used X to communicate updates on policy changes within his Department of Government Efficiency.

  • Why Samuel Abu Jinapor is trending on Twitter

Why Samuel Abu Jinapor is trending on Twitter

Damongo Member of Parliament, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has found himself at the centre of social media criticism following remarks made by an unidentified legislator during a heated parliamentary debate on Tuesday, February 4.

The discussion, which was meant to honour the 60th anniversary of the passing of Joseph Boakye Danquah, quickly degenerated into a tense exchange between lawmakers, exposing deep-seated political rivalries and undermining the spirit of constructive discourse.

Tensions flared when Tamale Central MP, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, contested what he called exaggerated tributes to JB Danquah by the Minority caucus. His objections sparked a verbal clash between MPs, prompting the presiding Speaker, Andrew Asiamah, to impose restrictions on contributions, allowing only parliamentary leadership to participate.

This move, however, did little to restore order. Korle-Klottey MP, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, rose to contribute but was ignored by the Speaker, who instead gave the floor to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. As Afenyo-Markin spoke, interruptions from MPs escalated, leading to an even more chaotic scene.

The chamber erupted further when a voice from the Minority side was heard making a disparaging remark directed at Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, referring to her as the “daughter of a murderer” and demanding that she sit down. Another MP followed up with a claim, stating, “But there is evidence that her father killed people.”

While there is no confirmation linking the comment directly to Jinapor, many social media users on X (formerly Twitter) have accused him of making the remark, sparking widespread backlash. Users have condemned the language used in Parliament, questioning the lack of decorum and the culture of personal attacks among Ghanaian lawmakers.

Mr Jinapor is yet to comment on the matter.

The incident has reignited conversations about parliamentary conduct, with many calling for higher standards of engagement and respect in national debates.

  • Brazil bans ‘X’ from operating due to the spread of misinformation

Brazil bans ‘X’ from operating due to the spread of misinformation

Brazil has prohibited the platform X, previously known as Twitter, from operating within its borders.

The ban was imposed because X failed to meet a deadline set by the Brazilian Supreme Court to appoint a new legal representative in the country.

Alexandre de Moraes directed the “immediate and total suspension” of the social media platform until it adheres to all court mandates and settles any outstanding fines.

The row began in April, with the judge ordering the suspension of dozens of X accounts for allegedly spreading disinformation.

Reacting to the decision, X owner Elon Musk said: “Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes.”

The social media platform is reportedly used by about 10% of Brazil’s 200 million residents.

By Saturday morning, some users had reported that they were unable to access the platform.

Earlier this month, the company closed its office in Brazil, citing threats of arrest against its representative if she did not follow what it called “censorship” orders, which the company deemed unlawful under Brazilian law.

Justice Moraes had decreed that X accounts involved in spreading disinformation, including many supporters of former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro, must be blocked while under investigation.

He also stated that the company’s legal representatives would be held responsible if any accounts were reactivated.

X has faced threats of fines for not complying with this directive, with both the company and Mr. Musk accusing the judge of having a left-wing bias.

This situation adds to a series of conflicts involving the tech billionaire, who has had disputes with the EU over X’s regulation and recently engaged in a public disagreement with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

The head of Brazil’s telecommunications agency, responsible for suspending the platform, stated he is “proceeding with the compliance” to enforce the ban, according to Reuters.

Justice Moraes has set a five-day deadline for companies like Apple and Google to remove X from their app stores and block its use on iOS and Android devices.

He also warned that individuals or businesses using methods like VPNs to access the platform could face fines of R$50,000 (£6,700).

According to the judge’s ruling, the ban will remain in place until X appoints a new legal representative in Brazil and pays the fines for breaching Brazilian law.

In a previous update from one of its official accounts, X stated that it would not meet these demands.

“Soon, we expect Judge Alexandre de Moraes will order X to be shut down in Brazil – simply because we would not comply with his illegal orders to censor his political opponents,” the post said.

“The fundamental issue at stake here is that Judge de Moraes demands we break Brazil’s own laws. We simply won’t do that.”

Meanwhile, the bank accounts of Mr Musk’s satellite internet firm Starlink have been frozen in Brazil following an earlier order by the country’s Supreme Court.

Starlink responded with a post on X which said the “order is based on an unfounded determination that Starlink should be responsible for the fines levied – unconstitutionally – against X.”

Justice Moraes gained prominence after his decisions to restrict social media platforms in the country.

He is also investigating Mr Bolsonaro and his supporters for their roles in an alleged attempted coup on 8 January last year.

X is not the first social media company to come under pressure from authorities in Brazil.

Last year, Telegram was temporarily banned over its failure to cooperate with requests to block certain profiles.

Meta’s messaging service Whatsapp also faced temporary bans in 2015 and 2016 for refusing to comply with police requests for user data.

  • Napo trolled on Twitter again for ‘disrespecting’ another dead president

Napo trolled on Twitter again for ‘disrespecting’ another dead president

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, the running mate of NPP’s flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has come under heavy criticism on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) following a recent political remark that many deemed disrespectful to a deceased former president.

During the official launch of the Ashanti Regional NPP Campaign Working Committees and Women’s Conference in Kumasi, Dr. Prempeh acknowledged the contributions of past Ghanaian presidents, including the late Dr. Hilla Limann, Jerry John Rawlings, and John Agyekum Kufuor.

However, his reference to the late President John Evans Atta-Mills sparked outrage. Speaking in the Akan dialect, NAPO remarked, “Baako na owu ye no,” which translates to “the one who even died.”

This comment quickly drew backlash from netizens, who condemned the former Energy Minister for what they perceived as a lack of respect.

One user wrote, “This guy doesn’t know how to talk at all. He doesn’t even appear pleasing to neutrals. Very bad public communication skills.” Another added, “He does not respect himself, so how can he show respect to Ghanaians… It’s impossible… Because of this man’s behavior, the NPP has failed in advance…”

A particularly pointed criticism read, “Those asking how it is insulting—if someone describes President Kufuor as ‘baako na ɔte wheel chair mu,’ how will it sound? Why do we defend any rubbish all in the name of political affiliation?”

This is not the first time Dr. Opoku Prempeh has faced criticism for his remarks.

During his introduction in Kumasi on July 9, NAPO claimed that President Akufo-Addo had outperformed Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, which also led to widespread criticism. While some disagreed with the comparison itself, others took issue with the way it was presented.

Following the backlash, NAPO publicly apologized for his statements, though the chiefs of Nkroful, Dr. Nkrumah’s birthplace, insisted on a personal apology before accepting it. During a visit to the Nzema area, NAPO made a stop in Nkroful to personally apologize for his earlier remarks.

“I lived with Nzema people when I was growing up. Nzema people and I are one people. I will never disrespect Nkrumah in any way. Anybody who attempts to disrespect Nkrumah will face the consequences of his actions. Nkrumah has done so much for the country. I was misconstrued, but I apologized to Ghanaians, and I stand here before you to apologize for my comments again. Forgive me, we’re all one people,” he stated.

In response, the chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutua, accepted the apology, stating, “NAPO’s comments received wide condemnation from Ghanaians because it was uncalled for. We hail the actions of Ghanaians, we thank them. We need to recognize that Nkrumah did a great job for the country… Today, he has asked for forgiveness from the chiefs; this is what we have all been waiting for, and so we accept his apology.”

Prior to this, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II had also advised Dr. Opoku Prempeh to ensure that his actions did not make Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia regret choosing him as his running mate. The Otumfuo also urged NAPO to prove his critics wrong by displaying humility and diligence in his role.

“Don’t let Dr. Bawumia regret the decision to make you his running mate. You should be diligent and humble and listen to instructions from him. Be humble and do the work diligently for me. Have a listening ear and don’t upstage your boss. I’ve heard people say you are arrogant, and I question myself because since your childhood, I’ve not known you to be arrogant. I won’t agree with what people are saying, but it is up to you to prove them wrong. We will pray for you to ensure that what God has for you will become a reality,” Otumfuo advised.

Shatta Wale reacts to viral adult video of popular TikToker

Dancehall artist Shatta Wale has voiced his strong opinions about the release of an adult tape involving Ghanaian TikToker Angie Stylish, which has caused a stir on social media, particularly Twitter, for the past two days.

In a recent TikTok live session, Shatta Wale condemned those responsible for leaking the explicit video, urging that they should be physically confronted rather than dealt with by the authorities.

He said, “The people behind the leak should be found and given a beating. The police shouldn’t get involved; they should face physical retribution.”

Shatta Wale also pointed to Angie’s role in the situation, criticizing the poor quality of the phone used to record the video, which he believes contributed to the unclear footage.

He offered advice to young girls participating in the TikTok session, urging them to be cautious in their interactions with men and expressing his concern by stating, “It would be shameful if any of you ended up in a similar predicament.”

Recently, social media, particularly Twitter, has been buzzing with criticism aimed at NPP’s vice presidential candidate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), following controversial comments he made about Ghana’s founding leader, Osaygyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During his unveiling on July 8, 2024, in Kumasi, NAPO asserted that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s achievements surpass those of all previous administrations in Ghana’s history, including Kwame Nkrumah’s.

His statement that Nkrumah’s presidency was not exceptional has sparked outrage online, with many accusing him of disrespecting Nkrumah’s legacy and displaying arrogance.

Critics argue that NAPO’s remarks could be interpreted as an attempt to undermine both Nkrumah’s achievements and the opposition candidate, Mr. John Mahama.

Even celebrities have joined in, condemning NAPO’s statements and highlighting Nkrumah’s significant contributions to Ghanaian history and independence.

Deputy NSS executive director Gifty Oware’s husband allegedly appointed to GFA board

A storm of accusations has erupted on social media as Twitter user Kojo Dynamic levels serious allegations against Deputy NSS executive director Gifty Oware.

The accusations centre on claims that Oware utilised her influence to secure a job for her husband, Peter Mensah, at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) executive committee, allegedly leveraging her political connections for personal gain.

This controversy comes hot on the heels of public scrutiny surrounding Oware’s alleged involvement in a corruption scandal related to scholarship funds.

The scandal, brought to light by media agency Fourth Estate, implicates Oware-Mensah among several affluent individuals benefiting from scholarships meant for financially disadvantaged but academically gifted Ghanaians.

Specifically, reports indicate that Oware-Mensah secured a government scholarship worth GBP18,450 to pursue an MSc in Development Policy and Politics at the University of Birmingham in 2020, allegedly obtained three years into her tenure at the Secretariat.

When pressed for comment, Oware-Mensah initially denied knowledge of the scholarship, promising to follow up but subsequently becoming unreachable.

Her decision to deactivate certain social media accounts has also fueled speculation regarding potential backlash following The Fourth Estate’s expose.

In addition to her role at the NSS, Oware-Mensah is known for owning Berry Ladies FC, a team competing in Ghana’s women’s premier league.

Meanwhile, concerns from the 2023/24 NSS personnel regarding outstanding allowance arrears add further pressure on the government to address these issues promptly.

  • Elon Musk sued for alleged $128m unpaid severance to former Twitter executives

Elon Musk sued for alleged $128m unpaid severance to former Twitter executives

Elon Musk is currently facing legal action from four former Twitter executives, including ex-chief Parag Agrawal, who claim that he owes them over $128 million in unpaid severance.

The executives allege that Musk dismissed them without cause after acquiring Twitter, now X, and fabricated reasons to avoid fulfilling the severance agreement.

The lawsuit asserts that this action is part of a broader pattern of Musk refusing to pay former employees what they are owed. The four executives, including Agrawal, former CFO Ned Segal, former CLO Vijaya Gadde, and former GC Sean Edgett, insist that, according to the severance plan, they are entitled to one year’s salary and stock awards.

This would amount to over $57 million for Agrawal, more than $44 million for Segal, over $20 million for Gadde, and more than $6 million for Edgett.

Despite Musk’s purchase of Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, the lawsuit claims he has been trying to evade the millions owed to the executives by rejecting the severance plans outlining compensation for job termination without cause.

The lawsuit accuses Musk of transforming the company into an entity that disregards the law and fails to fulfill financial obligations.

While Musk has not commented on the lawsuit, the executives portray him as someone who avoids paying debts and mistreats employees.

“Musk doesn’t pay his bills, believes the rules don’t apply to him, and uses his wealth and power to run roughshod over anyone who disagrees with him,” according to the filing in federal court in California.

The legal dispute over the money has been ongoing, and the executives claim that the administrative process has been exhausted.

Last year, a former HR officer at Twitter filed a class-action lawsuit, alleging that the company owed approximately $500 million in severance pay to former staff.

The four executives’ legal action aims to portray Musk as someone unwilling to pay debts and mistreating employees, claiming that his refusal to pay is part of a broader pattern within Twitter.

“Musk’s refusal to pay … is part of a larger pattern of refusing to pay Twitter’s former employees the benefits and other compensation they are due,” Mr Agrawal and his former colleagues alleged in the lawsuit.

  • Elon Musk sued by former Twitter executives for approximately $128 million in severance pay – Report

Elon Musk sued by former Twitter executives for approximately $128 million in severance pay – Report

Former Twitter executives are initiating a lawsuit against Elon Musk and X Corp., claiming they should receive over $128 million in severance pay that they haven’t been paid.

Twitter’s old boss, money manager, legal advisor, and legal consultant say in a legal case that they were let go without explanation on the day in 2022 when Musk bought Twitter and changed its name to X.

The executives say Musk made fake reasons to not pay the employees when they left their jobs.

The lawsuit claims that Musk has a history of not giving severance and not paying bills. Many former Twitter employees have sued him for not giving them severance after he fired them.

The lawsuit filed in federal court in California says that under Musk’s control, Twitter has been avoiding paying its employees, landlords, vendors, and others. “Musk doesn’t pay his bills, thinks he doesn’t have to follow the rules, and uses his money and influence to ignore anyone who doesn’t agree with him. ”

Musk’s representatives and representatives from San Francisco-based X did not reply right away to messages asking for a comment on Monday.

The old bosses say they should get paid for one year and also get the stock they were promised when Twitter was bought. Musk purchased the company for $44 billion, which is $54. 20 for each share, and he took over in October 2022.

They said they were all fired for no reason. Under the severance plans, “cause” was narrowly defined as doing something really bad, like being found guilty of a serious crime, being extremely careless, or intentionally doing something wrong.

The lawsuit says that Musk fired the employees because he thought they were very careless and did things on purpose to cause harm. He was also unhappy because Twitter had to pay money to lawyers to help with a deal. The bosses say they had to pay the fees to do their job and take care of the company’s money.

The lawsuit says if Musk thought the lawyers’ fees or any other payments were wrong, he should have tried to end the deal instead of holding back the executives’ severance payments.

X is facing a very large number of lawsuits because they have not paid their bills, according to the lawsuit. “Because Musk has been careless about paying his bills, he’s not worried about the lawsuits and is saying ‘let them sue. ‘”

“I’m LGBTQ+ in Ghana, I need a US Visa, they want to kill me!” – Stonebwoy fan appeals to international community

A Twitter user shared concerns about personal safety in Ghana following the recent passage of the LGBTQ+ bill.

Seeking assistance to acquire a visa to the USA, the user expressed fear and alleged threats, prompting a call for support through direct messages.

“ I am LGBTQ+ in Ghana and I don’t feel safe here. Can you help me acquire a visa to the USA. They want to kill me, Kindly reach out to me in my DM.”

Parliament has passed the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill also known as the anti-LGBTQ bill after three years following its introduction.

During Wednesday’s Parliamentary session  Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin sought to make amendments to the bill during the second consideration stage citing human right infringement.

However, the Minority rejected his request, prompting the Speaker to push for the third consideration stage.

Speaker Alban Bagbin put the bill to a voice vote and the ayes had it.

As it stands now, Parliament has tabled the bill to the President’s desk for President Akufo-Addo to assent to the bill to become law.

The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill aims to criminalise LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana. It proposes strict penalties, including imprisonment, for individuals engaged in activities related to homosexuality and LGBTQ+ advocacy.

Additionally, the bill seeks to prohibit the promotion of LGBTQ+ rights, organisations, and events in Ghana.

Prior to its passage, there had been several amendments to the bill.

After deliberation, Parliament decided that the minimum custodial sentence has been set at three years, with a maximum of five years for promoters and sympathisers.

Additionally, individuals caught directly engaging in these activities will face a minimum sentence of six months, extendable to a maximum of three years.

Ghana is among many African countries that are working to rid LGBTQ activities in the society.

Uganda enacted one of the world’s harshest anti-gay laws in May, which calls for the death penalty for certain same-sex acts.

Following this, the country faced sanctions from international communities.

The U.S. imposed a first round of visa restrictions on Ugandan officials in response to the law in June, and the World Bank halted new lending to the country in August.

The concern now is Ghana could face similar sanctions and be blocked from receiving financial aid from countries that uphold LGBTQ rights but Parliamentarians have noted that Ghana is poised to withstand whatever pro-LGBTQ countries throw at them.

Already, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has described the passage of bill as “profoundly disturbing.”

A portion of the UN Human Rights statement read “I call for the bill not to become law. I urge the Ghanaian Government to take steps to ensure everyone can live free from violence, stigma and discrimination, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Consensual same-sex conduct should never be criminalized.”

Despite his efforts to navigate the difficult situation, the man ultimately reached a breaking point and made the difficult decision to seek a divorce.

He shared his story with the world, highlighting the emotional toll of enduring such a painful and unsustainable relationship dynamic.

The man’s courageous decision to speak out about his experience serves as a reminder of the importance of healthy communication and mutual respect within marriages.

His story sparks conversations about the complexities of intimate relationships and the need for open dialogue to address issues of consent, intimacy, and relational dynamics.

“I will never again negotiate sex in a marriage. It’s why I got divorced. Men are miserable because you are withholding sex for him until he does what he’s told.

“That’s a private hell. If that is done to me, you’re out, sweetheart. Too many women out there who give sex without conditions.”

“Will you take care of the kids, the house, the dishes?”

“I do that shit already and don’t get laid for doing it. Your sex being held at the end of a fishing pole for compliance is only going to make you suffer. There it is. No, it’s not rape. It’s a woman who at the beginning of the relationship was giving sex happily and freely then stopped for one reason or another. Get that rape crap out of my timeline. I had sex twice in the last two year of my marriage.”

Twitter finally pays off Ghanaian staff who were laid off last year

    X, formerly known as Twitter
, has settled the compensation for the staff it laid off at its African headquarters over a year after their dismissal, according to their representative agency.

The employees, who were based in Accra, Ghana, were terminated by the social media platform in November 2022, shortly after starting their roles.

They had threatened legal action against X for failing to fulfil their redundancy payment obligations.

While the company has not officially commented on the matter, it had previously claimed to have fully compensated former employees.

Elon Musk, who assumed control of the company in 2022, initiated a significant global workforce reduction, resulting in the dismissal of over 6,000 employees. He cited daily losses exceeding $4 million as a reason for the downsizing.

The African staff, numbering fewer than 20, had recently transitioned to X’s new Accra office after eight months of remote work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The legal representation agency, Seven Seven, confirmed that they successfully secured redundancy settlements and repatriation expenses for foreign staff, although the exact payout amount was not disclosed.

“They are very pleased to finally be able to get their due, put this behind them and look to the future,” Carla Olympio from Agency Seven Seven told the BBC.

Last year, sacked staffers told the BBC their treatment by X had harmed their mental health and their finances.

“It’s difficult when it’s the world’s richest man owing you money and closure,” one said.

Initially, the laid-off staff were informed that they would receive an additional month’s salary despite the termination of their contracts. However, they were immediately denied access to their emails and did not receive any further salary payments thereafter.

Since then, the employees have been engaged in a frustrating struggle to obtain compensation. Some of them had relocated from neighboring countries like Nigeria, and their sudden termination left them stranded in Ghana with their families.

In a rare interview last April, Mr. Musk disclosed to the BBC that the social media company had reduced its workforce to 1,500 employees, down from nearly 8,000 at the time of his acquisition.

Following the revelation of Mr. Musk’s significant staff reduction, he tweeted that laid-off employees were provided with three months’ severance pay. However, the Africa-based staff claim they did not receive this compensation.

According to Agency Seven Seven, negotiations between X and the terminated African staff only commenced after the BBC reported on the story.

Last year, X faced a lawsuit filed by former employees in a California court, alleging the company’s failure to fulfil promised severance packages totaling at least $500 million.

  • Daniel Duncan-Williams returns from rehab after impact of Marijuana

Daniel Duncan-Williams returns from rehab after impact of Marijuana

Daniel, widely known as Dee Wills and the son of Arch-bishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has revealed the reasons behind his six-month hiatus. He shared that he has recently emerged from rehab after grappling with the destructive impact of marijuana on his life.

In his disclosure, Dee Wills expressed the profound effects of marijuana addiction, emphasizing how it nearly led to the deterioration of his mental health and sanity.

“The reason you haven’t been seeing me for the past six months is because I have been working on myself and I sent myself to rehab. Six months ago, I realized that I have a problem. I realized that I wasn’t thinking or processing well and my mind was just absolutely messed up due to marijuana,” he established.

Daniel, the last son of Action Chapel’s founder, announced his return on social media, saying that despite the difficult journey, it has been worthwhile.

“Going through the process is being a rough road but I managed. I went to my dad’s rehab, compassion, in Prampram Ghana. It wasn’t the easiest thing but thank God, I’ve got my mind back. So, I want to promise you my family that this new road I’ve taken is my new lifestyle and I am going to stick with it. Dee Wills, Daniel -Williams is back. Thank you,” he added.

    Daniel Duncan-Williams’ struggles

Daniel, widely known as Dee Wills, has found himself entangled in a string of controversies, notably marked by a highly publicized social media meltdown on platforms like Twitter and Snapchat.

In previous instances on social media, Daniel openly accused his father of being a demon, alleging that the police were paid to arrest him when he threatened to leave their home. Additionally, he shared explicit videos involving himself in intimate acts with women, among other provocative content.

By early June, Daniel made further claims, asserting that his father did not support his rap career and had consequently severed financial ties with him. He defended the release of nude videos as a means of staying authentic to himself and connecting with his fans.

    U-turn

After the several scandals, Daniel rendered a public apology to his father.

He had since been spotted severally preaching to his peers on social media, asking them to abstain from drugs and other vices.

    Bipolar

In response to several of Daniel Duncan-Williams’s viral video posts, his family released a statement on June 9, 2020, stating that their son has been fighting bipolar disorder for the previous six years.

The statement claims that when he doesn’t take his prescribed medicine as directed, he relapses and posts offensive content on social media.

The Archbishop released a statement through his spokesperson, Bishop Ebenezer Obodai, saying while the family acknowledges that “the obscenities are abhorrent” people must “understand that he (Daniel) has a serious illness”.

After disclosing that his son had acute bipolar disorder, he called the police to see how Daniel was doing during his “meltdown.”

The family asked Ghanaians and others to offer prayers for them as they pursue medical assistance for him.

“The Archbishop said, “This is a test of his faith. I acknowledge the situation my son is in, and I still love him…please pray for us…. Love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8.”

Big companies stop running advertisements on Elon Musk’s twitter platform

Many popular brands stopped advertising on X on Friday. This is bad for Elon Musk‘s social media company because he publicly supported an antisemitic conspiracy theory that White supremacists like.

Some of the biggest media companies like Disney, Paramount, NBC Universal, Comcast, Lions gate, and Warner Bros are angry and stopping their ads. Discovery is the company that owns CNN.

X is said to have lost Apple. This was reported by several news outlets, including Axios, which was the first to report that Apple had withdrawn.

Apple did not answer when asked for comments several times.

The fast and wide withdrawals from X, the platform that used to be called Twitter, are happening because more and more people are upset with Musk for speaking out in support of extreme beliefs.

And it makes people unsure about the future of a company that Musk and former CEO Linda Yaccarino promised would start making money again as soon as next year.

The companies have stopped their advertising, just like IBM did on Thursday.

IBM’s ads were shown next to content that supports Nazis. IBM said clearly that the situation is completely unacceptable.

IBM is very serious about not allowing hate speech and discrimination. We have stopped all advertising on X while we look into this bad situation. This is not okay.

On Friday, X CEO Linda Yaccarino wrote on social media that X has been very clear about their work to stop antisemitism and discrimination. “It’s not okay anywhere in the world. ”

“On Friday evening, Musk said that anyone who supports killing an entire group of people will be banned from this platform. It’s just common sense. ”

This week, Media Matters found that ads from big companies like IBM, Apple, Comcast, NBC, and Oracle appeared next to similar content.

Oracle’s representatives have not answered requests for a comment.

A person speaking for X said that the accounts supporting Nazis mentioned in the Media Matters report on Thursday will no longer be able to make money from ads on their pages.

In August, two other companies, NCTA and Gilead Sciences, stopped advertising on X because their ads were shown with pro-Nazi content.

  • EU investigates X for allegedly ‘allowing’ Israel-Hamas disinformation on app

EU investigates X for allegedly ‘allowing’ Israel-Hamas disinformation on app

The European Union (EU) is looking into Elon Musk’s X due to concerns that it may be sharing terrorist and violent content, hate speech, following the recent attack by Hamas on Israel.

This investigation, which is the first one following the EU’s new tech rules, will also examine how complaints are dealt with.

X, which used to be called Twitter, announced that it got rid of many accounts related to Hamas from their platform.

The EU has told TikTok and Meta that they need to do more to fight against lies and false information.

Social media companies have noticed a big increase in false information about the fighting between Israel and Hamas. This includes fake pictures and wrongly titled videos.

Thierry Breton, who is in charge of the EU’s industry, announced on Thursday that the EU has asked X to provide information to check if they are following the Digital Services Act (DSA). This law aims to safeguard users of large technology platforms, and it has been recently implemented.

Earlier on Thursday, Linda Yaccarino, who is the main boss of a company, said that they had gotten rid of many accounts related to Hamas and had done something about lots of content since the attack on Saturday. They did this because Mr Breton wrote a letter to them on Tuesday.

The EU has labeled Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, as a banned terrorist organization.

Over 150 people were captured and brought to Gaza, and around 1,300 individuals lost their lives during the violent attacks conducted by Hamas in Israel over the weekend.

So far, over 1,500 people have died in Gaza after Israel began attacking in response to previous attacks.

The UN’s World Food Programme says that the situation in Gaza is very bad. There is not enough food and water because of an Israeli blockade. Israel is saying that they will not lift the blockade until the people they are holding captive are released.

MrBreton wrote a letter to Mr. Musk, expressing concern that the platform X has not removed “violent and terrorist content” even after being warned about it.

MrBreton didn’t explain the disinformation he talked about in the letter, but he said many untrue images and facts were shared a lot on social media.

In his reply about X, Mr. Musk said that our policy is to be open and clear about everything. He knows that the EU also appreciates this approach.

“Please tell us about the rule-breaking incidents you are suggesting happened on X, so that the public can know about them. ”

The DSA became a law in November, but companies were allowed some time to ensure that their systems followed the rules.

On 25 April, the commission listed the biggest online platforms – the ones with more than 45 million EU users – that would have to follow the strictest rules, including X. The law became active in August, four months later.

Under the new rules, big companies must identify and evaluate possible dangers they might create, share that evaluation, and take steps to handle the issue.

If a company does not follow DSA rules, they may have to pay fines up to 6% of their total earnings or their service might be temporarily stopped.

X has until 18 October to explain how it handles crisis situations and until 31 October to address other topics.

MrMusk got rid of Twitter’s Trust and Safety Council right after he bought the company in 2022. Created in 2016, the volunteer council had around 100 separate groups that gave advice on topics like hurting oneself, harming children, and spreading messages of hatred.

At the moment, a representative from Meta said to the BBC that they are working day and night to make sure their websites are secure. They have put together a special team of experts to watch over what’s happening.

FLASHBACK: Twitter users startled to see import duty on car raised from GHS49,00 to GHS55,00 in a month

Ghanaians were incensed by the rate of port fee increases for imports, particularly vehicles, last year.

Car dealers’ complaints about the over 20% increase in port fees in just one month contributed to the commotion’s escalation.

After a year, the situation has not changed, which has caused the cost of vehicles and other imports to rise in the nation.

A social media post has left many users astounded after a car dealer revealed a significant increase in the final duty and taxes payable for an imported vehicle within the span of just one month.

The tax invoice details shared on social media showcased a staggering rise from GH¢49,000 to GH¢55,000, marking a notable GH¢6,000 difference from the initial amount.

The invoice listed approximately 11 levies imposed on a single vehicle, including the ECOWAS levy, Network Charge COVID Health, Network Charge VAT, Import NHIL, and Network Charge NHIL.

The Twitter user @BrodoSchemes, who posted the invoice and highlighted the rapid change, captioned it with, “From 49k to 55k real quick! A difference in just about a month.”

This post has garnered diverse reactions from Ghanaians on Twitter, with many expressing their dismay over the increase and suggesting that the system appears to be designed to place financial strain on citizens in their daily lives.

Another car dealer shared a similar experience on the same platform, stating that the duty cost for a 2015 Honda Civic was nearly GH¢33,000, and the container fee amounted to approximately GH¢3,400. Furthermore, factoring in agent fees, clearing charges, and towing expenses, one could expect to pay around GH¢40,000 in duty charges at the ports for the vehicle.

In reaction to the post, another tweep wrote, “For you to understand what this man is saying better, let me give you some small comparison…Duty for a 2016 Honda Civic in May 2021 was GH¢ 15,527.40.”

Some users have speculated that Ghanaians’ propensity for profiteering is to blame for the country’s high import taxes.

Twitter called a ‘habitual non-compliant platform’ by India govt

In a recent court filing, the Indian government has labeled X Corp (formerly Twitter) as a platform that consistently fails to comply with regulations.

“X-Corp does not follow the law of the land,” the government said, adding that this lowered “the authority of the law, judiciary and executive”.

The Indian government, in response to an appeal by X Corp (formerly Twitter) in a court in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, has accused the company of being a “habitual non-compliant platform.”

X is appealing against a recent court order that dismissed its challenge to government orders blocking certain accounts and posts, along with a fine imposed for non-compliance.

The government argued in its court filing that all blocking orders were issued following legal procedures and in the interest of India’s sovereignty and security.

It accused X of deliberate non-compliance and exerting pressure on the government while not following its orders.

The government also highlighted the importance of intermediary status and safe harbor protection for platforms like X in Indian law, emphasizing that losing these protections could hinder the company’s operations in the country. X has not yet commented on the filing.

“Habitually, the Appellant platform [X] ensures compliance only after the court warns it of action/consequences for non-compliance,” the government said in its affidavit.

X has argued that the government’s orders to block several accounts relating to widespread farmer’s protest were not “consistent with Indian law” and against X’s (then Twitter) principle of protecting free speech.

The government noted that X’s “compliance rates with government requests have been significantly low”, prompting the government to issue show-cause notice to the company.

    #FixTheMotorway tops Twitter trends

Many issues affect Ghanaians, but what appears to be most distressing is the deplorable state of the Accra-Tema Motorway.

For months now, the road connecting Accra, the economic and administrative hub of Ghana, to Tema has posed significant challenges for motorists due to its pothole-ridden and rough condition.

This critical transportation link has not only caused inconvenience but also resulted in the loss of lives and a substantial increase in vehicle maintenance costs.

According to reports, the road section from Tema to Accra remains in a state of disrepair, while the area near the Ashaiman tollbooth has been particularly affected by extensive potholes. Transit trucks are frequently seen parked on the roadside for extended periods, exacerbating the situation. Additionally, erosion has taken its toll on the road’s edges.

Even the recently repaired portion just before the Abattoir Bridge has succumbed to potholes, forcing drivers to reduce their speed for safety reasons.

In June 2022, Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, noted that the Tema motorway would be expanded into 10-lane but much is yet to be seen.

Netizens are peeved and they want the difficulties faced while on the motorway resolved immediately, not sooner or later to save lives and avert any catastrophe.

Biometric data, employment history to be requested by X users

The company X, formerly known as Twitter, has declared it would begin collecting user biometric and employment data on September 29, 2023.

In an effort to strengthen its privacy practices, X Corp. will compile user photographs. However, X premium subscribers have the option to identify themselves by sending in a selfie and a photo ID.

According to the microblogging platform, this will help app users who are looking for work and employers who are hiring.

Additionally, X Corp stated that user biometric information will stop impersonation on the app.

A story on bbc.com claims that X made this choice after purchasing Laskie, a tech staffing firm, in May 2023.

“We may collect and use your personal information (such as your employment history, educational history, employment preferences, skills and abilities, job search activity and engagement, and so on) to recommend potential jobs for you, to share with potential employers when you apply for a job, to enable employers to find potential candidates, and to show you more relevant advertising,” a new X Corp privacy policy states.

“X will give the option to provide their government ID, combined with a selfie, to add a verification layer.

“Biometric data may be extracted from both the government ID and the selfie image for matching purposes. This will additionally help us tie, for those who choose, an account to a real person by processing their government-issued ID. This will also help X fight impersonation attempts and make the platform more secure,” X Corp told BBC.

Blocking feature to be removed from X (formerly Twitter) – Elon Musk announces

Elon Musk has introduced a significant alteration to the X platform, previously recognized as Twitter, revealing that users will no longer have the option to employ the “block” feature on other accounts.

Musk clarified that this functionality appears illogical and will be eliminated, except when it pertains to direct messages.

The block attribute on X permits users to restrict specific accounts from initiating contact, viewing their tweets, or following them.

Musk has suggested that users adopt the “mute” feature as an alternative, which conceals an account’s posts from their timeline without necessitating unfollowing or blocking.

On the contrary, blocking prevents an account from accessing a user’s public posts. Musk, who holds the position of CEO at Tesla and SpaceX, gained ownership of X in 2022 through a $44 billion acquisition deal.

He has been implementing several modifications to the platform, including the dismissal of top executives and staff downsizing.

Linda Yaccarino, formerly an executive at NBCUniversal, assumed the role of X’s CEO earlier this year, with Musk overseeing the product and technology divisions.

KMA’s ban on tricycle is baseless – Bridget Otoo

Ghanaian TV presenter and influencer, Bridget Otoo, has strongly criticized the decision by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to ban commercial tricycles, commonly known as “Pragyia,” from operating in the Central Business District (CBN).

The new directive, aimed at reducing traffic and congestion in the central business district, went into effect on August 1, 2023. Since then, numerous tricycles have been seized, and some drivers have been arrested.

The implementation of the ban led to a backlash from tricycle drivers, who took drastic actions to reclaim their seized vehicles and even blocked roads to voice their frustrations.

Bridget Otoo expressed her disapproval of the ban on her Twitter account (now X), describing it as ill-conceived.

She argued that the tricycle operators are engaged in legitimate work and are not involved in criminal activities.

She criticized the authorities for not doing enough to provide alternative employment opportunities for these individuals.

“The tricycle ban is one of the most senseless things that KMA has done. These guys are working, not stealing or committing robbery! They found a job where you failed to provide one for them. Yet you ban them for causing traffic; ban your incompetence for not thinking!” she stated.

Elon Musk announces fight with Zuckerberg to go live on X

In a social media post, Elon Musk has made claimes that the cage match he had in mind with Meta (META.O) CEO Mark Zuckerberg would be broadcast live on social media network X, formerly known as Twitter.

Since June, the owners of social media have been encouraging a mixed martial arts cage fight in Las Vegas.

“Zuck v Musk fight will be live-streamed on X. All proceeds will go to charity for veterans,” Musk said in a post on X early on Sunday morning, without giving any further details.

Earlier on Sunday, Musk had said on X that he was “lifting weights throughout the day, preparing for the fight”, adding that he did not have time to work out so brings the weights to work.

When a user on X asked Musk the point of the fight, Musk responded by saying “It’s a civilized form of war. Men love war”.

Meta did not respond to a Reuters request for comment regarding Musk’s post.

The controversy began when Musk stated in a post on June 20 that he was willing to engage in a cage match with Zuckerberg, who is skilled in jiujitsu.

The following day, Zuckerberg, 39, who has shared pictures of his victorious matches on his company’s Instagram platform, asked Musk, 51, to specify the location for the proposed showdown. In response, Musk suggested “Vegas Octagon,” referring to a venue known for hosting mixed martial arts (MMA) championship bouts.

Subsequently, Musk expressed his intention to start training if the cage fight were to materialize.

“X” will pay for legal fees if customers are subjected to unfair treatment by managers – Elon Musk

Elon Musk announced that X, formerly known as Twitter, will cover the legal expenses of individuals who face unfair treatment from their employers due to their activity on the social media platform.

In a message to users on Sunday, Musk assured that the financial assistance provided by X would have no limits. He encouraged users to inform the platform if they have experienced any form of discrimination or retaliation for their posts or likes.

The social media platform recently underwent a name change, transitioning from Twitter to X.

Elon Musk has been vocal about being a “free speech absolutist” and has criticized the platform’s content moderation policies prior to his involvement with it.

When he announced that he was taking over Twitter in April last year, Mr Musk said “free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated”.

According to studies by the Center for Countering Digital hatred (CCDH), hatred and misinformation were “spreading like wildfire on the platform under Musk’s ownership.”

X Corp charged CCDH with “unlawful acts” in order to “improperly gain access” to its data.

Young daughter watches in confusion as Trump signs her hand with permanent marker

A young girl’s bewildered expression was left when former President Donald Trump signed her hand with a permanent marker.

Trump approached a metal barricade with supporters on the opposite side while he was at a campaign rally. The girl was sitting on her father’s shoulders when he reached out and shook her hand, as seen in a video posted to Twitter by PatriotTakes.

The girl’s right hand was then signed by the former president while her father and she looked on. Trump shook her father’s hand and spoke briefly with him as the daughter sat looking at her signed hand.

Trump went on to sign the white hat of another fan.

It was unclear exactly what Trump had written on the girl’s hand or if it was an autograph.

It appeared to be “Hi!” according to a Twitter user, and PatriotTakes confirmed it could be the case.

Trump has done it in the past as well.

Another video tweeted by PatriotTakes shows Trump signing another young girl’s right hand in March while seated at a table at his Mar-a-Lago estate. As Trump continued to write, her mother grinned and laughed while making the remark, “You can never shower again.”

You have no idea, Trump remarked.

Trump is infamous for signing legislation into law using a thick, permanent black marker.

The most recent signing was a lighter moment for Trump, who is now under investigation for several things that may not preclude him from running for president but may hurt his chances of winning re-election.

Despite being charged with a crime twice—once by the Manhattan district attorney for his alleged involvement in a hush payment to a porn star and once by special counsel Jack Smith for his alleged handling of sensitive information—Trump has continued to campaign.

The former president could also face a third charge after his attorneys met with Smith’s prosecutors on Thursday to discuss a grand jury investigation into the Capitol incident on January 6 and Trump and his associates’ attempts to rig the 2020 election. Trump stated last week that he anticipates being detained and indicted once more.

Trump continues to be the favourite to win the Republican nomination in 2024. The Keystone State will host his first speech since he declared his candidature at his upcoming campaign rally on Saturday night in Erie, Pennsylvania.

  • Twitter’s new trademark owned by Meta, Microsoft, hundreds more

Twitter’s new trademark owned by Meta, Microsoft, hundreds more

Billionaire Elon Musk’s recent decision to rebrand Twitter as X may encounter legal complexities, as other companies, such as Meta (META.O) and Microsoft (MSFT.O), already hold intellectual property rights to the same letter.

The letter “X” is extensively utilized and referenced in various trademarks, making it susceptible to potential legal disputes. Consequently, the company formerly known as Twitter could encounter challenges in safeguarding its X brand in the future.

“There’s a 100% chance that Twitter is going to get sued over this by somebody,” said trademark attorney Josh Gerben, who said he counted nearly 900 active U.S. trademark registrations that already cover the letter X in a wide range of industries.

On Monday, Elon Musk rebranded the social media network Twitter as “X” and revealed a new logo featuring a stylized black-and-white version of the letter.

Trademarks protect brand names, logos, and slogans that identify the sources of goods, and owners of such trademarks can claim infringement if other branding causes consumer confusion. Remedies for infringement can include monetary damages or blocking the use of the contested branding.

Since 2003, Microsoft has owned an X trademark related to communications about its Xbox video-game system. Meta Platforms, which has its Threads platform as a Twitter rival, also owns a federal trademark registered in 2019 that covers a blue-and-white letter “X” for fields like software and social media.

While Meta and Microsoft might not sue immediately, they could take legal action if they perceive Twitter’s X branding to encroach on the brand equity they have built around the letter, according to trademark attorney Josh Gerben.

Both Meta and Microsoft, along with Twitter, have not responded to requests for comment.

Meta itself faced intellectual property challenges when it changed its name from Facebook, including trademark lawsuits filed by investment firm Metacapital and virtual-reality company MetaX. Meta also settled another trademark dispute over its new infinity-symbol logo.

If Musk’s rebranding efforts succeed, other companies could potentially lay claim to the letter “X” for their own branding purposes.

“Given the difficulty in protecting a single letter, especially one as popular commercially as ‘X’, Twitter’s protection is likely to be confined to very similar graphics to their X logo,” said Douglas Masters, a trademark attorney at law firm Loeb & Loeb.

“The logo does not have much distinctive about it, so the protection will be very narrow.”

Insider reported earlier that Meta had an X trademark, and lawyer Ed Timberlake tweeted that Microsoft had one as well.

Elon Musk reveals Twitter’s new “X” logo

Twitter’s CEO unveiled the company’s new logo, a white X on a black background, following the desire expressed by its owner, Elon Musk, to replace the iconic bird logo.

Linda Yaccarino took to Twitter on Monday morning, announcing the arrival of the new logo with enthusiasm, saying, “X is here! Let’s do this.”

Elon Musk quickly followed suit by updating his profile picture to the new logo and incorporating “X.com” into his Twitter bio.

As per reports, Musk is keen on developing a “super app” named “X,” hence the introduction of the new logo to align with this vision.

On Sunday, the billionaire said he was looking to change Twitter’s logo, tweeting: “And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.”

He then said that an interim logo would go live later the same day.

Elon Musk, who has renamed the business to X Corp, expressed that the rebranding should have been done much earlier. He shared an image of a flickering “X” on Twitter, and in a subsequent Twitter Spaces audio chat, confirmed that the Twitter logo will indeed change.

Linda Yaccarino, Twitter’s CEO, expressed excitement about the rebrand, seeing it as a new opportunity for X to further transform the global town square, building upon the massive impression Twitter had made in changing the way we communicate.

The bird in Twitter’s logo, known as Larry, was originally a tribute to basketball star Larry Bird, according to Twitter’s co-founder Biz Stone.

In certain regions like Asia, super-apps like India’s PayTM and Indonesia’s GoJek have become integral to people’s everyday lives, allowing users to pay for services through a single finance system. WeChat, with its broad range of services, has become one of the region’s biggest apps with a vast number of users.

Twitter has long protected its recognizable blue bird logo, but during a temporary change in April, it was replaced with Dogecoin’s Shiba Inu dog, which contributed to a surge in the meme coin’s market value. This move led to accusations of insider trading against Elon Musk by a group of Dogecoin investors.

Recently, Twitter faced criticism for imposing limits on how many tweets per day various account holders can read, leading to the growth of rival service Threads, owned by Meta, which saw over 100 million sign-ups in just five days after its launch.

On top of these challenges, Twitter is now facing a lawsuit claiming that the company owes at least $500 million in severance pay to former employees, stemming from layoffs that occurred after Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company, which resulted in more than half of its workforce being let go.

Twitter to change logo, Elon Musk says

On Sunday, Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Twitter, announced his intention to change the social media platform’s logo.

In a tweet, he stated, “And soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.” He also mentioned that if a suitable “X” logo is posted on the platform, it will go live worldwide the following day.

Musk shared an image of a flickering “X” as a potential new logo. During a Twitter Spaces audio chat, when asked if the Twitter logo would indeed change, he responded with a definitive “Yes,” expressing his belief that this change should have been implemented much earlier.

Under Musk’s leadership since he acquired Twitter in October, the company has already undergone a name change to X Corp.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Twitter’s website says its logo, depicting a blue bird, is “our most recognizable asset”. “That’s why we’re so protective of it,” it added.

In April, Twitter temporarily replaced its iconic bird logo with Dogecoin’s Shiba Inu dog, which contributed to a significant surge in the market value of the meme coin.

However, Twitter faced extensive backlash from users and marketing experts when Elon Musk announced a new policy to limit the number of tweets per day that various accounts can read.

As a consequence of these limits, Meta-owned rival service Threads experienced rapid growth, attracting over 100 million sign-ups within just five days of its launch.

Twitter’s most recent complication was a lawsuit filed on Tuesday claiming the firm owes at least $500 million in severance pay to former employees. Since Musk acquired it, the company has laid off more than half its workforce to cut costs.

Twitter shares ad revenues with content creators

Twitter has announced a new programme that will allow a group of selected content creators to earn a share of the advertising revenue generated from ads displayed in response to their posts.

The social media platform announced the programme on Thursday, 13 July 2023, saying that it was part of its efforts to help people earn a living directly on Twitter.

“Surprise! Today we launched our Creator Ads Revenue Sharing programme. We’re expanding our creator monetisation offering to include ads revenue sharing for creators,” a tweet from Twitter said.

According to Twitter’s ‘Creator Ads Revenue Sharing’ page, creators will be able to earn a share in ad revenue starting from the replies to their posts. The programme will be available in all the countries where Stripe supports payouts.

To be eligible for the programme, creators must:

    •  Be subscribed to Twitter Blue or Verified Organisations

    •  Have at least 5 million impressions on their posts in each of the last three months

    •  Pass human review for Creator Monetisation Standards

They will also need a Stripe account, which is a payment platform that Twitter works with for payouts. They will also have to adhere to Twitter’s Creator Subscriptions policies.

Twitter said it would soon launch an application process for the programme and that all eligible creators would be able to apply by accessing Monetisation in their settings.

The programme comes a few days after Twitter’s ‘rival’ Threads was launched, which is also intended to attract more content creators to the platform.

Earlier this year, Twitter introduced a feature that enabled users to provide paid subscriptions for their content on the platform.

Elon Musk, the billionaire who acquired Twitter in October last year, has previously stated that for the first year, the company would transfer the entirety of subscription revenue to creators, excluding charges related to payment gateways.

‘Outrageous’ costs for Pent hostel causing social media uproar

On social media, there have been conflicting reactions to the recently announced dorm housing costs for the 2023–2024 academic year at Ghana Hostels Limited, also known as Pent Hall, a part of the University of Ghana.

Many people on social media are voicing their outrage over what they called extortionate costs established for students who want to live in the hall.

The upcoming academic year’s fees have been announced by the hostel administration, and most students have found them to be extremely excessive and out of their price range.

From four thousand nine hundred twenty-eight Ghana cedis (GH4,928.00) for a shared room with four occupants to thirty-five thousand three hundred twenty Ghana cedis (GH35,320.00) for a single room reserved for international students, prices range.

Twitter in particular has been inundated with comments expressing anger about the high rates.

One user exclaimed, “The hostel prices are crazy in Legon herrrrhhh.” Another user expressed frustration with the situation, blaming the leadership, stating, “You want students who aren’t working to pay such amounts? The evil is from our leaders. We are only seeing the ripple effect around.”

The issue has also prompted discussions about the affordability of education in Ghana, with some users vowing to avoid sending his children to any overpriced universities in the country. “Sia money wey somebro go fi take do masters den dey post for here like that. Legon Pent and that KNUST brunei, all demma owners are wicked.”

“Pure definition of ‘de wo lane mu.’ Eii Legon, how much is even a two-bedroom rent in East Legon?”

  • NPP, NDC communicators ‘trade blows’ on Twitter over ‘Akufo-Addo is corrupt’ tag

NPP, NDC communicators ‘trade blows’ on Twitter over ‘Akufo-Addo is corrupt’ tag

Communication Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, and Deputy Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Maleek Basintale, were involved in a physical altercation on the microblogging platform Twitter.

The dispute arose following a critical attack launched by the NDC Deputy Communication Officer on the character of the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, during a panel discussion on TV3 Newday.

During a live broadcast of the TV3 Newday show on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, the Deputy Communication Officer of the NDC, Maleek Basintale, clashed with a member of the NPP’s communication team, Benjamin Gyewu Appiah.

The NDC deputy national communication officer had described President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a corrupt president during a discussion on the leaked tape of an alleged plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, on TV3’s ‘The Big Issue’ programme.

In reaction to this, the Communication Officer of the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah in a tweet described the actions of Basintale on the show as reckless and unrelated.

“I have just finished watching TV3 New Day and wish to describe the attempt by the communicator to tag President Akufo-Addo with corruption as unrelated, reckless, and beyond the pale. The said claims are false political rumours and should not be repeated. Communicators must be mindful of their utterances because making or repeating these false claims could be costly. Kind regards to Mr. Roland Walker,” Ahiagbah tweeted.

This tweet did not sit well with Basintale, who replied that instead of defending the NPP on Twitter, Richard Ahiagbah should move to a studio to do it just like the NDC’s Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi does.

    “Dear @RAahiagbah,
My name is Malik Basintale, an elected DNCO. Instead of spewing vain and desolate threats here, learn to wake up at 5 am, drive to a studio by 7 am and defend your party. At least learn from my boss
@SammyGyamfi_ NPP appointed you and not @elonmusk,” Basintale also added.
A leaked audio recording, allegedly involving a Police Commissioner and a politician discussing a plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, has ignited public outrage.

The recording features an officer who identifies himself as “Mensah” and a politician who is reportedly a regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Their conversation revolves around plans to remove the IGP from office due to fears that he would be too firm during the 2024 elections and prevent any potential rigging.

The Commissioner of Police also specifically identifies the IGP’s handling of the Assin North by-election as evidence of his commitment to ensuring free and fair elections.

Elon Musk unveils team for AI company set to overtake OpenAI

Elon Musk finally unveiled the team of engineers from the major American technology companies who will be working on his long-promised artificial intelligence startup xAI on Wednesday. He aims to use this team to compete with ChatGPT.

Musk, the owner of Twitter and CEO of Tesla (TSLA.O), will serve as the company’s chief executive. Musk has previously stated that the development of AI should be put on hold and that the industry requires oversight.

“Announcing formation of @xAI to understand reality,” Musk said in a tweet on Wednesday.

The website said xAI will hold a Twitter Spaces event on July 14.

Igor Babuschkin, a former DeepMind engineer, Tony Wu, a former Google (GOOGL.O) research scientist, Christian Szegedy, a former Microsoft research scientist, and Greg Yang make up the xAI team.

According to a state filing, Musk registered X.AI Corp, a Nevada-incorporated company, in March.

Musk is listed as the company’s only director while Jared Birchall, the family office’s managing director, is listed as the secretary.

The billionaire had said in April that he would launch TruthGPT or a maximum truth-seeking AI to rival Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s (MSFT.O) Bing AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe.

Generative AI caught the limelight with OpenAI’s launch of popular chatbot ChatGPT, which came in November last year, ahead of the launch of Bard and Bing AI.

Dan Hendrycks, who will advise the xAI team, currently serves as the director of the Center for AI Safety and his work revolves around the risks of AI.

Musk’s new company is separate from X Corp, but will work closely with Twitter, Tesla, and other companies, according to the website.

xAI said it is recruiting experienced engineers and researchers in the Bay Area.

  • Why do you have to block me on Twitter? – Criss Waddle questions Delay

A popular Ghanaian hip-hop artist, Criss Waddle, has recently raised questions regarding television personality Delay’s decision to block him on Twitter.

The musician is curious to understand the reasons behind this action and speculates whether it is connected to his refusal to appear on her show.

During the course of 2022, one of Criss Waddle’s fans inquired when Delay would extend an invitation for him to be a guest on her show.

Taking notice of the comment, Criss Waddle responded by revealing that Delay had previously invited him on multiple occasions, but he had declined each time.

Criss Waddle went on to elaborate on his rationale for avoiding participation in the show, citing his discomfort with the way Delay allegedly belittles her guests in order to elevate her own self-esteem.

“She’s tried so many times, I just hate how she tries to belittle everyone that comes on her show, it’s like the only opportunity she has to make herself feel better”, wrote.

A few days ago, Delay shared a question on the Thread app to find out what her fans are up to.

She wrote: “What are you doing today”.

In response to the thread, Criss Waddle expressed his thoughts by stating, “Well, today I’m contemplating why you blocked me on Twitter. Could it be because I couldn’t make it on your show?”

His comment has caused a stir among internet users, with some speculating that it might lead to a potential conflict or disagreement between Criss Waddle and Delay. The reaction from netizens suggests that they are interested in seeing how this situation unfolds between the two public figures.

  • How to sign up to Twitter’s rival app, Threads

How to sign up to Twitter’s rival app, Threads

Threads, Meta’s response to Twitter, garnered an impressive five million sign-ups within just four hours after its launch, as stated by Mark Zuckerberg. With such a substantial user base, what can we expect from the platform?

Threads operates by allowing users to sign up using their Instagram login credentials. As they join, they will automatically be able to follow all the accounts they already follow on Instagram.

The platform enables users to share posts consisting of up to 500 characters, including images, gifs, and videos that can be up to five minutes in length. It bears similarities to Twitter, featuring short text-based content, options for likes and reposts, and the ability to quote a thread, similar to quote tweeting.

Based on its initial reception and features, Threads has the potential to become a significant player in the social media landscape. Its integration with Instagram and the familiar functionalities it offers may attract a considerable user base, facilitating engaging conversations, content sharing, and interactions within the platform.

Threads, since its launch, has faced criticism regarding its content display. Users have reported a mix of posts from the accounts they follow along with posts from random accounts.

Meta has acknowledged that this mixture is a combination of followed accounts and algorithmic recommendations. Presently, there is no option to view posts exclusively from the people users follow, and it remains uncertain whether Meta will introduce this feature in the future.

Additionally, at the moment, Threads does not offer a direct messaging feature, which might be a relief for some users who prefer to focus on public posts rather than engaging in private conversations.

To maintain a more personal Instagram experience, users can keep their Instagram account private while having a public presence on Threads. However, for users under 16, both Instagram and Threads accounts are private by default.

Users have the flexibility to make their Threads account private at any time and have control over who can reply to their posts.

At present, there are no plans to introduce a desktop version of Threads. The platform is accessible solely through the iOS and Android apps. Meta has not provided a timeline for the potential release of a desktop version.

Regarding monetization, Meta has confirmed that Threads will not be monetized in the current year. However, the door is open for potential advertisements in the future.

For convenience, users can log in to Threads using their Instagram credentials, and their existing Instagram username will be retained. This is reassuring for users concerned about the possibility of someone else claiming their username.

Meta wants the app to be similar to rivals like Mastodon, and be decentralised and allow users to transfer accounts to other platforms.

The company is working to make Threads compatible with ActivityPub which allows social networks to be interoperable and would let users of Threads take their accounts and followers to other ActivityPub-supported apps.

It’ll be stricter than Twitter around things like nudity, and will enforce content rules around hate speech that Twitter has been lacking in since Elon Musk took over.

According to sources from Meta, the delay in launching Threads in the European Union (EU) is attributed to regulatory considerations and concerns regarding compliance with stringent EU data privacy regulations.

Privacy advocates have raised concerns about the extensive range of personal information that Threads can collect, as indicated by its data privacy disclosure on the App Store. This includes health data, financial information, contact details, browsing and search history, location data, purchases, and “sensitive info.” These concerns have contributed to apprehensions about the app’s compliance with EU data privacy rules.

The EU places significant emphasis on protecting individuals’ privacy rights, and any app or service operating within its jurisdiction must adhere to strict data privacy regulations.

  • Twitter likely to sue Zuckerberg over new app Threads

Twitter likely to sue Zuckerberg over new app Threads

Twitter is reportedly contemplating taking legal action against Meta, the company behind Threads, a fast-growing rival app to Twitter.

Threads, which was recently launched to a substantial user base, offers similar features and has been positioned by Meta as a “friendly” alternative to Twitter.

Elon Musk, CEO of Twitter, expressed his opinion on the matter, stating that competition is acceptable, but cheating is not. However, Meta has denied allegations made in a legal letter claiming that former Twitter employees were involved in the creation of Threads.

Meta has reported that over 30 million people have already signed up for the new app. While this is a significant number, it represents less than one-tenth of Twitter’s estimated 350 million user base, as per Statista.

It is important to note that US copyright law does not safeguard ideas, meaning Twitter would need to demonstrate in court that its intellectual property, such as programming code, was unlawfully used.

Additionally, Meta holds a patent granted in 2012 for the concept of “communicating a newsfeed,” the system used to display the latest posts on platforms like Facebook.

The potential legal action between Twitter and Meta highlights the competitive dynamics in the social media landscape and the challenges surrounding intellectual property rights within the industry.

Both Mr Musk and Mr Zuckerberg have acknowledged the rivalry over Threads, which is linked to Instagram but works as a standalone app.

As it launched in 100 countries, Mr Zuckerberg broke more than 11 years of silence on Twitter to post a highly popular meme of two nearly identical Spider-Man figures pointing at each other, indicating a stand-off.

Shortly after, and as the word “Threads” trended globally on his platform, Mr Musk said: “It is infinitely preferable to be attacked by strangers on Twitter, than indulge in the false happiness of hide-the-pain Instagram.”

  • Twitter threatens to sue Meta over new competing Threads app

Twitter threatens to sue Meta over new competing Threads app

Just one day after releasing a new rival app, Twitter vowed to sue Meta.

Within 24 hours of going live, Threads had 30 million new users sign up.

But now, Twitter’s CEO Elon Musk has warned Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg via his attorney Alex Spiro that he may face legal repercussions in a letter.

‘Twitter has strong concerns that Meta Platforms (Meta) has engaged in systematic, deliberate, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property,’ the letter said.

It claims that Meta has hired ‘dozens’ of former Twitter employees and that they have access to the company’s ‘trade secrets’.

Mr Spiro also says that many of these employees have ‘improperly retained Twitter documents and electronic devices’, reports Semafor.

He wrote: ‘Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights, and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets or other highly confidential information.’

However, a source at Meta reportedly told Semafor that Twitter’s accusations are baseless.

They said: ‘No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee – that’s just not a thing.’

Mr Spiro warned: ‘Twitter reserves all rights, including, but not limited to, the right to seek both civil remedies or injunctive relief without further notice.’

Threads is trying to compete with Twitter by taking advantage of Instagram’s billions of users.

Since Mr Musk’s takeover of the social media platform, Twitter has seen competition from Mastodon and Bluesky among others.

The Threads user interface, however, has a striking resemblance to the microblogging platform.

Mr Zuckerberg only announced the new app on Tuesday, calling it an app built for ‘sharing with text’.

At first glance, the app features an unmistakable Twitter-like feed in Instagram’s signature design.

‘Threads offers a new, separate space for real-time updates and public conversations,’ said Mr Zuckerberg in an announcement.

With Threads, Meta is also trying its hand at a ‘decentralised’ approach like many Twitter alternatives.

Mr Zuckerberg added: ‘We are working toward making Threads compatible with the open, interoperable social networks that we believe can shape the future of the internet.’

Here’s what happened when we tried out Threads for the first time today.

  • Twitter rival to be launched on Thursday by Mark Zuckerberg

Twitter rival to be launched on Thursday by Mark Zuckerberg

The Owner of Facebook Meta, Mark Zuckerberg is set to introduce its new app, Threads, in direct competition with Twitter.

The app is scheduled to launch on Thursday and is already available for pre-order on the Apple App Store.

Threads will be connected to Instagram, allowing users to seamlessly navigate between the two platforms. Initial screenshots reveal a user interface resembling Twitter, and Meta describes Threads as a “text-based conversation app.”

This development adds to the ongoing rivalry between Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter. In recent times, the two prominent figures even jokingly agreed to engage in a physical fight, although the seriousness of their intentions remains uncertain.

“Thank goodness they’re so sanely run”, Mr. Musk responded to a tweet about Threads, in an apparent fresh swipe at Mr Zuckerberg.

Meanwhile, Twitter has said that the popular user dashboard, TweetDeck will go behind a paywall in 30 days time.

The move is the latest push by Mr Musk as he tries to get users to sign up to Twitter’s subscription service, Twitter Blue.

On Saturday, the multi-billionaire restricted the number of tweets users could see, citing extreme “data scraping”.

It appears from Meta’s Threads app that it will be a free service – and there will be no restrictions on how many posts a user can see.

“Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow” the description on the App Store says.

Pictures show screengrabs from the app, that look almost identical to Twitter.

It being a Meta app, Threads will also hoover up data on your phone, including location data, purchases and browsing history.

Several apps that bear a striking resemblance to Twitter have sprung up in recent years – such as Donald Trump’s Truth Social and Mastodon.

Another similar app, Bluesky claimed to have seen “record” traffic after Mr Musk’s move to restrict usage at the weekend.

However, Threads could be the biggest threat faced by Twitter to date.

Mark Zuckerberg has a history of borrowing other company’s ideas – and making them work.

Meta’s Reels is widely seen as a TikTok copy, while Stories looks similar to Snapchat.

Meta has the resources to compete with Twitter. Threads will be part of the Instagram platform, so it will also be connected to hundreds of millions of accounts. It’s not starting from zero, as other would-be rivals have had to do.

Although Mr Musk has been praised in some quarters for his commitment to free speech, he has also alienated some users.

Mr Zuckerberg will hope he can pull enough disenchanted users away from Twitter to create a genuine alternative.
