Kudus assists in West Ham’s 4-2 victory over Brentford

Ghanaian football star Mohammed Kudus played a pivotal role for West Ham United on Monday night, aiding his team in a thrilling 4-2 victory over Brentford in the English Premier League.

Starting for his side in the Round 26 clash at the London Stadium, Kudus, known for his exploits with the Black Stars, showcased his talent throughout the game.

The scoring opened early on, with Jarrod Bowen finding the back of the net in the 5th minute, swiftly followed by another goal just two minutes later, courtesy of Bowen once again, doubling West Ham’s lead.

Brentford responded with determination, as Neal Maupey’s strike in the 13th minute narrowed the gap, showing their intent to level the playing field.

After the halftime interval, Mohammed Kudus played a crucial role in shifting the momentum back in West Ham’s favour, providing an assist to Jarrod Bowen’s hat-trick goal in the 63rd minute, reinstating the team’s comfortable lead.

Emerson Palmieri then added to West Ham’s tally with a stunning goal, further solidifying their dominance.

Despite Brentford’s Yoane Wissa finding the net again in the 82nd minute, it wasn’t enough to stage a comeback as West Ham held firm to secure the impressive 4-2 victory.

Following his impactful performance in the match, Mohammed Kudus now boasts six goals and two assists from 21 appearances for West Ham United.

  • I want to be the mediator between the Ken-Bawumia camp – Afenyo Markin

I want to be the mediator between the Ken-Bawumia camp – Afenyo Markin

Majority Leader Alex Afenyo Markin has revealed that he plays a crucial role as a mediator between the factions led by Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He disclosed that both he and his close associate, Kennedy Agyapong, initially supported Dr. Bawumia. However, when Agyapong decided to contest the NPP presidential primaries, Markin found himself in a delicate situation.

He couldn’t betray his friend Agyapong, nor could he retract his commitment to Vice President Bawumia.

In an interview with Citi News, Afenyo Markin emphasised his impartial stance, expressing openness to both factions and even consulting with party elders.

He reiterated his loyalty to Agyapong while acknowledging his responsibility to maintain cohesion within the party.

“Both of us were Bawumia and out of the blue, he informed me that, Alex, I want to contest. I said okay, but as it is, I am a Freemason and a Catholic. I know how to respect friendship, and if you give your word to a brother, you have to keep it. So I told him that our friendship would remain, but it would be difficult to be seen out there doing this or that.

However, I will want to play the role of resolving issues and being the bridge. He understood where I was coming from. I am an open-minded person, and no one suspected me.

I told Dr. Bawumia what the situation was; I told Ken what the situation was; and I told Mr President what the situation was and the party elders.

This is a man who, when I was going through a crisis in Parliament, said that positions had been shared and nobody considered Afenyo Markin.

He calls me at midnight into his house; we talk business and Alex says I will give you capital to revive your business. He gives me capital to revive my business and I turn around to betray him. No, I can’t do that,” he said.

On whether Kennedy Agyapong will support the Dr Mahamudu Bawumia campaign, he indicated that everything will be alright.

  • I had no interest in ministerial appointments – Afenyo Markin

I had no interest in ministerial appointments – Afenyo Markin

Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has openly stated that he has never aspired to serve as a minister within the government.

Instead, he expresses his strong desire to remain in Parliament, believing that it is the most effective platform for serving the country.

This sentiment was conveyed by the majority leader during an interview with Accra-based Citi TV.

He said “In 2017, when we came into office, I had some expectations but I lost out in leadership, I lost out in ministerial appointments. But on the ministerial thing, I don’t want to be a minister, and I still don’t want to be a minister. I think I should serve in Parliament.

But even so, at the committee level, we had first-timers becoming chairmen and vice chairs, and I was a bob no rank, I didn’t complain, I kept on working. After the incident at the ECOWAS parliament, I sacrificed and came back home.

Later, when my name was taken off the list, there was no notice served on me and I thought we were going to have a renewal. A colleague who was already a chair and a vice chair had another opportunity to serve on the delegation but I didn’t complain. In this game of politics, you can’t survive with bitterness.

If you’re always thinking you’ll go through mental health issues, depression and your immune system will come down. I have a certain view that, whatever your lot, take it and move on. That’s me; I try to take away the pressure from the job, be myself and hope for a better day and alas, that day arrived unexpectedly,” he said.

  • Lawyer accuses three police officers for killing J.B Danquah, declares accused innocent

Lawyer accuses three police officers for killing J.B Danquah, declares accused innocent

Defense counsel, Yaw Dankwah, in the murder case involving former MP for Abuakwa North, J. B. Danquah Adu, has asserted that Daniel Asiedu, the first accused person, did not perpetrate the crime.

Instead, he alleged that the former MP was murdered by three individuals impersonating police officers who visited his residence.

According to Dankwah, these impersonators, after committing the gruesome act, managed to disappear without a trace. This claim, he argued, is supported by the testimony of Apraku, the security guard who promptly reported the incident to the police via phone calls.

Furthermore, Dankwah emphasised that the late MP was of significant stature and physical strength, implying that it would have been improbable for Asiedu to overpower him.

“It was the three impersonating officers who overpowered the MP and killed him at his residence… Asiedu cannot overpower the MP physically.

“Your story suggesting that it was Daniel Asiedu who killed the MP was a fabrication and full of lies.”

However, ASP Augustine Nkrumah, the case investigator answering questions before the court, said it was Daniel Asiedu, the first accused person, who killed the former MP.

According to the investigator, Asiedu was “a terrible person” and capable of killing the man.

The case investigator took the court through how some weapons used in committing the crime were retrieved from Asiedu.

He also told the court how a T-shirt and a handkerchief, all soaked with blood and a knife were found at the scene and Asiedu admitted that those items were for him.

ASP Nkrumah said Asiedu’s girl friend, Janet Kyeraa, also confirmed to the police that the T-shirt and handkerchief belonged to Aseidu.

The investigator said Janet Kyeraa also informed the police that Asiedu, after the incident, gave her a knife stained with blood to clean.

The investigator told the court that Asiedu’s slippers were also retrieved from the crime scene and Aseidu also identified a catapult and cutter found at the scene.

“During investigations, the knife Asiedu used in stabbing the deceased to death was traced to Asiedu’s room at Agbogbloshie in Accra.

“When the knife was shown to the first accused person (Asiedu), he admitted to having used that knife on the deceased. Asiedu said he was held by the deceased and he left him helpless in his room,” said ASP Nkrumah.

The case investigator said in the deceased room, Asiedu asked for forgiveness for the offence he had committed.

The investigator told the court that Asiedu demonstrated to the investigation team how he went to the crime scene and how he perpetrated the crime.

“My Lord, the exhibits found in the deceased room, Asiedu admitted sending them there.”

Daniel Asiedu is currently facing trial for his alleged involvement in the murder of former MP for Abuakwa North, J.B Danquah Adu, which occurred at the MP’s residence in February 2016. He has been formally charged with both murder and robbery.

Asiedu stands accused alongside Vincent Bossu, with whom he is alleged to have conspired to rob the MP. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them before a seven-member jury.

Presiding over the case is Mrs. Justice Lydia Osei Marfo. The court has ordered the accused individuals to be remanded in custody until their next appearance scheduled for February 28, 2024.

German media taunts Jadon Sancho after poor display in Borussia Dortmund’s defeat

German media has labelled Jadon Sancho, currently on loan from Manchester United to Borussia Dortmund, as ‘the worst’ following a lacklustre performance in Dortmund’s loss to Hoffenheim.

Despite initially showing promise with a couple of assists in his first two appearances back in the Bundesliga, Sancho has failed to maintain his momentum.

The winger has not contributed any goals since then and struggled to make an impact in Dortmund’s recent 3-2 defeat to Hoffenheim.

After yet another uninspiring performance for the Black and Yellow, where he spent 75 minutes on the pitch, German media Der Westen wrote: “BVB was so happy when Jadon Sancho was brought back during the last winter transfer period.

The prodigal son is finally back. He really sent the fans into a state of euphoria. A few weeks later, there was no sign of it anymore.

“Against TSG Hoffenheim, the supporters hoped that the 23-year-old would finally score his first goal. But they were disappointed once again.

The BVB star showed another poor performance against Hoffenheim and was probably the worst player on the pitch.”

The England international decided to start afresh in Germany after being frozen out at United for his public fallout with manager Erik ten Hag in August 2023.

The Red Devils may look to offload the player in the summer, although the German club is unlikely to sign him as they cannot afford to pay his high transfer fee.

The 23-year-old needs to be much more consistent if he wants to stand any chance of being picked by Gareth Southgate for the England squad ahead of the upcoming Euro 2024.

For now, he will be next seen in action on Saturday as Edin Terzic’s side take on Union Berlin.

  • Everton points deduction reduced to 6 points after appeal

Everton points deduction reduced to 6 points after appeal

Everton has climbed above Nottingham Forest and Brentford in the Premier League standings, reclaiming the 15th position after the Premier League’s appeals board reduced their 10-point deduction to six, thus restoring four points.

The deduction was initially imposed due to Everton’s violation of spending regulations during the period ending in 2021–22, exceeding the permitted £105 million in losses by £19.5 million.

The club argued that they had mitigating circumstances that warranted consideration.

These included expenses deemed permissible, such as stadium costs, investment losses due to the Russian war, and pandemic-related setbacks.

Following the appeal, Everton contended that the punishment was disproportionate and immediately lodged an appeal.

A three-man panel presided over a three-day hearing in late January and earlier this month.

During the hearing, Everton was not permitted to present new evidence but made several legal arguments, led by prominent lawyer Laurence Rabinowitz KC.

As a result of the appeal, the original 10-point penalty for financial rule breaches has been reduced to six points.

Everton say they are ’satisfied’ with the outcome and a club statement read: ‘
While the club is still digesting the Appeal Board’s decision, we are satisfied our appeal has resulted in a reduction in the points sanction.

‘Everton can confirm that an Appeal Board has concluded that the points deduction imposed by an independent Premier League Commission in November will be reduced from 10 points to six points, with immediate effect.
‘While the club is still digesting the Appeal Board’s decision, we are satisfied our appeal has resulted in a reduction in the points sanction.

‘We understand the Appeal Board considered the 10-point deduction originally imposed to be inappropriate when assessed against the available benchmarks of which the Club made the Commission aware, including the position under the relevant EFL regulations, and the 9-point deduction that is imposed under the Premier League’s own rules in the event of insolvency.

‘The Club is also particularly pleased with the Appeal Board’s decision to overturn the original Commission’s finding that the Club failed to act in utmost good faith. That decision, along with reducing the points deduction, was an incredibly important point of principle for the Club on appeal. The Club, therefore, feels vindicated in pursuing its appeal.

‘Notwithstanding the Appeal Board’s decision, and the positive outcome, the Club remains fully committed to cooperating with the Premier League in respect of the ongoing proceedings brought for the accounting period ending in June 2023.

‘The Club is still considering the wider implications of the decision and will make no further comment at this time other than to place on record its thanks to our Fan Advisory Board and other fan groups throughout this process, and to all Evertonians for their ongoing support and patience.’

The Toffees made their the appeal hearing before an independent commission earlier this month after the club described the initial 10-point penalty as ‘wholly disproportionate’.

The outcome of the appeal may also have a direct impact on a second PSR complaint the club is facing, which was laid on January 15. That complaint covers an assessment period that ends with the 2022-23 season.

Under a new expedited process to deal with PSR breaches that was agreed upon by top-flight clubs last summer, an independent commission hearing into the second PSR complaint must conclude no later than 12 weeks after the complaint was laid, which would be early April.

  • Liverpool condemns referee’s handling of Gravenberch’s injury

Liverpool condemns referee’s handling of Gravenberch’s injury

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp criticised referee Chris Kavanagh’s officiating during the Carabao Cup final, stating that Kavanagh lacked the necessary competence for such an important match.

Klopp’s frustration stemmed from Kavanagh’s failure to take action against Moisés Caicedo for his tackle on Ryan Gravenberch, which resulted in the Netherlands international being carried off on a stretcher just 22 minutes into the game against Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea.

Despite replays highlighting the severity of Caicedo’s challenge on Gravenberch’s left ankle, referee Kavanagh allowed play to continue without intervention, and the incident was not reviewed by VAR.

Klopp expressed surprise and disappointment at the officials’ decision not to review the incident, which further compounded Liverpool’s injury woes, with 11 senior players currently sidelined.

“There were two teams fighting very hard, and the referee didn’t have the level of the game,” Klopp said. “It [Caicedo’s challenge] was not even a foul? Then the fourth official explained that we cannot give a card… Good idea.

“This situation was obvious for me—everything you need for a card. They did an x-ray [on Gravenberch]. It is not broken, but the ligaments got something.”

Liverpool are back in action against Southampton in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday and Klopp said that he could struggle to name a team to face the EFL Championship side.

“We don’t have a team right now for Wednesday,” he said. “The guys who came on can maybe play again; the rest will get treatment on Monday.

“I love this country to bits, but the schedule is not made for winning a lot. We will see the price we have to pay, but if we fight for everything, then we will see what comes next. Somehow, against Southampton, there will be a team in Liverpool shirts.”

Liverpool’s win against Chelsea, sealed by Virgil van Dijk’s 118th-minute headed goal, was the first of four potential trophies for the club in what will be Klopp’s final season as manager.

The contribution of the club’s youngsters was crucial, with three teenagers and two 20-year-olds all involved at some stage.

“What happened here was absolutely insane; these things are not possible,” Klopp said. “The team, a squad, an academy full of character. I am so proud that I could be part of that tonight.

“The craziest thing is we deserved it. We had lucky moments, and they had lucky moments. The boys showed up; it was really cool. We needed fresh legs; they were fresh but very young, but they did the job.”

Ter Stegen is on Saudi Arabia’s wanted list – Report

Al Ittihad is reportedly interested in securing a deal for Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, according to Matteo Moretto.

While there has been no direct contact between the Saudi Pro League club and Barcelona, discussions have taken place with Ter Stegen’s representatives as Nadi Al-Sha’ab considers a potential move in the summer transfer window.

Despite serving as the vice captain at Barcelona, the 31-year-old goalkeeper may be open to leaving the club if a suitable offer arises from Saudi Arabia, although he is currently content with the defending Spanish champions.

Al Ittihad’s sporting director, Ramon Planes, who previously held a position at Barcelona from 2018 to 2021, is believed to be a key factor driving the club’s interest in Ter Stegen.

Despite the German international’s significant tenure at Camp Nou, his age and the allure of a lucrative offer may signal the conclusion of his decade-long association with Barcelona.

The Blaugrana are under pressure to offload several players to ensure compliance with LaLiga Financial Fair Play regulations and to achieve financial stability.

Players like Frenkie de Jong, Jules Koundé, and Raphinha have all been linked with moves away from the club this summer, with Ter Stegen now added to the list of potential departures.

Palmeiras seek to extend Endrick’s move to Real Madrid – Sources

Palmeiras is making a final effort to persuade Real Madrid to extend Endrick’s stay until the end of 2024, sources informed ESPN’s Francisco De Laurentiis and Rodrigo Faez.

However, both the player and the Spanish club are eager for him to make the move this summer.

Endrick, 17, was confirmed as a Real Madrid signing in December 2022, with plans for him to join the team in Spain upon turning 18 in July.

According to sources, Palmeiras President Leila Pereira has inquired with the player’s representatives about the possibility of him remaining in Brazil until December.

She hopes to capitalise on the visit of Madrid’s chief scout, Juni Calafat, to Brazil this week to advocate for a change of plans.

Calafat is scheduled to meet with Endrick and his representatives during his visit, as well as attend Palmeiras’ match against Portuguesa in the Campeonato Paulista on Wednesday.

Although Palmeiras acknowledges the challenge, they are not giving up hope of retaining Endrick until December.

Pereira intends to discuss the matter with Calafat, with the club banking on the remaining installments owed by Real Madrid for the transfer to provide leverage in negotiations.

However, Endrick’s preference remains to join Real Madrid for the preseason this summer.

Four summer signings on Man United’s radar

Manchester United’s upcoming overhaul under new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe may involve the acquisition of four new players, according to reports from The Daily Telegraph.

Sources disclosed to ESPN last week that United’s summer transfer plans include targeting a striker and a defender, with an emphasis on strengthening the overall squad.

The club intends to focus on players entering the final year of their contracts as part of Ratcliffe’s rebuilding strategy.

As per The Telegraph’s report, Manchester United is considering signings in multiple positions, including a striker, right-back, and right-sided centre-back, with a potential addition of a central midfielder.

ESPN’s sources indicate uncertainty surrounding the futures of several first-team players, including Christian Eriksen, Raphaël Varane, Casemiro, Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Victor Lindelöf.

Additionally, forward Anthony Martial, whose contract expires in the summer, is expected to depart on a free transfer.

Manchester United also plans to entertain offers for players currently out on loan, such as Jadon Sancho, Donny van de Beek, Facundo Pellistri, and Brandon Williams.

I have a strong personality, and I believe in not giving up – Afua Asantewaa reacts to GWR disqualification

Guinness World Record (GWR) in a reply to an X user’s post concerning the results of Ghana’s Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, who attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon in December 2023, announced that she has been disqualified.

This was met with mixed reactions from several Ghanaians, with some expressing disappointment and betrayal while others commending her for her effort and courage over her intention to hide such news from the public.

However, in response, Afua Asantewaa explained in an interview with GHONE TV that she received the news of the outcome of her sing-a-thon attempt just moments before hosting a gala dinner and the launch of the Lebanese Scholarship Alumni Network.

She attributed this to a miscommunication by GWR, highlighting her inability to access her account; hence, she has no official documents to post or prove that her attempt was unsuccessful.

She contends that she hasn’t disappointed Ghanaians, as many claim.

“I spoke about a miscommunication with GWR and it had to be with my log-in account. I don’t have access so I sit here and don’t have official documents to even post on my social media, that this is my disqualification letter and probably that’s the reason they went ahead to comment on another person’s post and it went viral so I think that I haven’t disappointed Ghanaians, and maybe the only disappointment is that they didn’t hear it from me.

Modric gives Real Madrid late winner over Sevilla in an exquisite goal

Luka Modric showcased his enduring brilliance with a magnificent late goal against Sevilla, propelling Real Madrid to a commanding eight-point lead at the summit of La Liga.

Despite the absence of England midfielder Jude Bellingham for Real Madrid in his third consecutive match, the game appeared destined for a stalemate.

However, the 38-year-old Croatian midfielder, Modric, delivered a moment of magic just seven minutes after coming on as a substitute, curling in a sublime strike.

Modric has only started in 11 of his 21 La Liga appearances this season, raising questions about his playing time. With his contract set to expire in June, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged that Modric may feel disappointed with his limited opportunities.

“He shows everyone how hard it is for me to leave him on the bench, Ancelotti said.

“Not just for the goal he scored, but for how he trains. He is an example to the whole squad. It’s very complicated to leave him on the bench.”

Ancelotti said Modric’s contract situation was also “complicated,” adding: “It’s hard to manage. I was once a player and went through it in my last year as a professional player.

“I would understand if Modric was a little bit upset if he is not playing. Everyone thinks he is at the end of his career, but I think he doesn’t agree with that. He looks to be well, fresh. He’s got legs. He doesn’t seem like he is 38.”

Before Modric’s decisive goal, Lucas Vazquez saw his effort disallowed for the hosts due to a VAR review. The Real Madrid full-back’s goal was nullified after the review determined that home defender Nacho had committed a foul on forward Youssef En-Nesyri during the build-up.

Despite Federico Valverde hitting the post early in the second half for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, Sevilla’s defense, led by former Real Madrid stalwart Sergio Ramos, remained resolute.

Barcelona, currently in second place with 57 points, are closely followed by Girona, who are one point behind. Girona will play their postponed fixture against Rayo Vallecano on Monday (20:00 GMT), providing them with an opportunity to close the gap on the top two teams.

174 people died from road accidents in January 2024 – NRSA reports

Data released by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) reveals that in January 2024, a total of 174 individuals tragically lost their lives.

During the same period, there were 1,142 reported road traffic accidents, involving 1,991 vehicles of various types, and resulting in 1,504 casualties, including 174 fatalities and 1,330 injuries.

Of the reported accidents, 55% (631) were categorised as minor, 33% (375) as serious, and 12% (136) as fatal.

Among the deceased, 9% (16 individuals) were under the age of 18, while the remaining 91% (158 individuals) were adults.

This data highlights a concerning statistic: for every ten adults killed, a child also lost their life, indicating a significantly higher ratio of road traffic fatalities among adults compared to children during this period.

This discrepancy can be attributed, in part, to the increased exposure of adults to traffic incidents compared to children.

According to the data, private vehicles accounted for the largest share of vehicles involved in crashes in January 2024, comprising 45.3% of the total.

This was followed by commercial vehicles at 32.9%, with motorcycles representing the smallest proportion at 21.9%. Interestingly, only commercial vehicles saw an increase in crash involvement from 2023 to 2024, rising by 13.3%.

Comparatively, the involvement of private vehicles and motorcycles in crashes decreased by 7.1% and 1.4%, respectively, in 2024 compared to the previous year.

In terms of cycles, motorbikes were the most frequently involved, making up 74% (324) of all cycle-related crashes in January 2024. Tricycles accounted for 23% (101), while bicycles and handcarts contributed 2% (7) and 1% (3), respectively.

Upon analysing the categories of vehicles involved in crashes, it was found that motorcycles constituted the least among all vehicle types involved.

Notwithstanding, the share of motorbike crashes is alarming, taking into consideration the population of motorbikes in the total vehicle population.

Greater Accra Region contributed the most to crashes and came in third in fatalities (393 crashes and 29 deaths, respectively).

This was followed by the Ashanti Region, with 311 crashes and 39 deaths. (highest fatalities recorded).

Eastern Region came third in the number of crashes with 156 crashes and second in fatalities with 35 deaths.

Paris St-Germain manager Luis Enrique emphasised the need for his team to adapt to playing without Kylian Mbappe following the striker’s substitution during the draw against Rennes.

Mbappe, who has confirmed his move to Real Madrid in the summer, was replaced in the 65th minute after being unable to increase his tally of 21 goals for the season.

“We have to get used to not playing with Kylian, sooner or later, it’s going to happen,” Enrique said.

“When I consider it appropriate, he will play or not play, as all coaches do with their players.

“I want maximum competitiveness for next season. I want every starting player in this PSG team to think that this is a great opportunity. That’s what I’m looking for this season and next season.”

Goncalo Ramos secured a vital point for the Ligue 1 frontrunners with a stoppage-time penalty, levelling the score after Amine Gouiri’s first-half goal had given Rennes the lead.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) remains undefeated in their last 18 league matches and currently holds an 11-point advantage at the summit, amassing 54 points from 23 games.

Meanwhile, Rennes sits in seventh place in the league standings.

  • Akufo-Addo to present State of the Nation Address tomorrow, February 27

Akufo-Addo to present State of the Nation Address tomorrow, February 27

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to deliver the State of the Nation (SONA) address to Parliament on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, as required by Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution.

This constitutional mandate requires the President to deliver a message on the State of the Nation at the beginning of each session and before the dissolution of Parliament.

The address is expected to highlight the government’s main policy goals for the year and offer insights into the strategies aimed at improving current economic conditions.

Earlier in February, the then Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, announced this development in Parliament, stating, “Mr Speaker, in accordance with Article 67 of the Constitution, H.E the President will deliver to the House a message on the State of the Nation on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

“Honourable Members are entreated to avail themselves of the task ahead.”

This upcoming address will signify President Akufo-Addo’s second-to-last presentation to Parliament.

  • All African Games: Ablakwa blows cover on alleged GH¢604m ‘unauthorized’ operational expenditure

All African Games: Ablakwa blows cover on alleged GH¢604m ‘unauthorized’ operational expenditure

North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has recently brought to light concerning documents.

These documents suggest that the government has far exceeded its approved operational expenses threshold by nearly 500% in preparation for the upcoming 13th All African Games.

Ablakwa pointed fingers at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Ministry of Sports, and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Games, alleging their involvement in this excessive spending.

His allegations raise serious questions about the transparency and accountability of the government’s financial management regarding this major sporting event.

The three groups, he said in a February 26, 2024 post on social media, “have shockingly agreed to spend an elephantine, wrongful and unconscionable US$48 million on so-called “operational expenses” for the 13th African Games to be hosted in Ghana between the period — March 5 and 23, 2024. [Refer to intercepted documents attached.]

“2. It must be noted that this staggering US$48 million is an entirely different amount from the mega US$195 million (GHS2.4 billion) already spent on infrastructure for the games.

“3. At the prevailing exchange rate, US$48 million is equivalent to a colossal GHS602 million,” he added.

Ablakwa also disclosed how the presidency organised a fundraiser in respect of the games, emphasising how the said move was untoward.

He has since hinted that the sports minister will be hauled before parliament this week to explain the circumstances surrounding the said expenditure.

PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO’S ELEPHANTINE, WRONGFUL, & UNCONSCIONABLE US$48MILLION (GHS602MILLION) “OPERATIONAL EXPENSES” FOR THE 13TH AFRICAN GAMES

    1. Even before the dust settles on the scandalous US$8.5 million AFCON budget brouhaha; unimpeachable, unassailable and incontrovertible intercepted documents in my possession reveal for the first time that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his appointees at the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) have shockingly agreed to spend an elephantine, wrongful and unconscionable US$48 million on so-called “operational expenses” for the 13th African Games to be hosted in Ghana between March 5 and March 23, 2024. [Refer to intercepted documents attached.]

    2. It must be noted that this staggering US$48 million is an entirely different amount from the mega US$195 million (GHS2.4 billion) already spent on infrastructure for the games.

    3. At the prevailing exchange rate, US$48 million is equivalent to a colossal GHS602 million.

    4. A careful reading of the intercepted February 13, 2024, letter signed by the LOC Executive Chairman, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, confirms that this ginormous US$48 million (GHS602 million) will be spent in less than a three week period (18 days). This translates into a 6-day weekly expenditure on “operational expenses” of a mind boggling GHS200.6 million and an even more incredible daily “operational expenses” of GHS33.4 million.

    5. It is most instructive to note that apart from the blatant profligacy and reckless wastefulness by the leader of a bankrupt, debt-distress IMF bailout country; President Akufo-Addo’s conduct is absolutely wrong because Parliament approved GHS100 million under Goods and Services and then GHS50 million for Capital Expenditure for the 2024 expenditure by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on the 13th African Games. [See page 230 of 2024 Budget as attached.]. It is therefore totally lawless and utterly repugnant for President Akufo-Addo to unilaterally vary by more than six times what Parliament has approved for non-CapEX — that is from GHS100 million to GHS602 million.

    6. The intercepted documents confirm that despite Parliament’s approval of only GHS100 million, President Akufo-Addo instructed the LOC to send out official request letters as recent as February 13, 2024, in which they defy Parliament and communicate their outlandish, unlawful and unjustifiable US$48 million (GHS602 million).

    7. It is regrettable to note that instead of President Akufo-Addo and his appointees at the Sports Ministry and LOC acknowledging Ghana’s current economic crisis and slashing their ostentatious US$48 million (GHS602 million) “operational expenses” budget, he rather proceeded to personally chair fundraising meetings on the 6th and 7th of November, 2023, at the Jubilee House with an objective of raising the US$48 million (GHS602 million). [See evidence of the President’s meetings attached].

    8. A number of top executives who have received the Akufo-Addo-inspired US$48 million (GHS602 million) shocking request letter are outraged about the quantum for a broke country and the deliberate refusal to transparently present a breakdown.

    9. Careful analysis of the entities President Akufo-Addo met during his now infamous fundraising engagements shows that the President is mainly interested in public funds either by targeting SOEs such as GNPC, Ghana Gas, BOST and GOIL; or by targeting private companies such as MacDan, Zoomlion, MODEC and Kosmos all noted for executing huge government contracts.

    10. Additionally, the President’s conduct raises fundamental ethical questions: how did the President select these companies? What promises did President Akufo-Addo make to these CEOs? How can other companies compete fairly with these “presidential companies” in any competitive bidding process, particularly considering the current single-source procurement epidemic? After these companies present their US$5million sponsorship cash to the President’s misplaced fundraising campaign, how can taxpayers be assured of value for money in the projects these entities would execute?

    11. Should GNPC, Ghana Gas, BOST and GOIL which belong to the Ghanaian people be compelled by President Akufo-Addo to sponsor his unconscionable GHS602 million 13th African Games “Operational Expenses” when these corporations could be allowed to make more meaningful investments in expanding their operations so they could create sustainable jobs for the youth and thereby help address Ghana’s acute youth unemployment?

    12. Why are these SOEs beginning to make payments due to President Akufo-Addo’s unlawful pressure when they haven’t sought Parliamentary approval? The BOST management should prepare to answer questions in Parliament for the initial US$500,000.00 (GHS6.2million) it transferred to Akufo-Addo’s LOC a few days ago.

    13. The Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by the dynamic Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson will this week seek Speaker Bagbin’s blessings to summon the Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif on their unlawful, ostentatious and unconscionable US$48million (GHS602million) “Operational Expenses” budget, which undermines the authority of Parliament. That will be a first step in a series of constitutional actions, not ruling out the possible impeachment of President Akufo-Addo, as we are determined to make sure the President doesn’t get away with another blatant “create, loot and share” scheme.

    14. President Akufo-Addo’s unpatriotic and nation-wrecking act of approving and leading the collection of this gigantic US$48 million (GHS602 million) for so-called “Operational Expenses” for the 13th African Games deserves to be exposed and scuttled.

    15. A government denying pensioners their life savings; a government unable to house VRA spillage victims who are still living in refugee-like tents after five months; a government unable to equip our hospitals including the renal unit of KATH, the imaging departments at Korle-Bu, Ridge, 37 and our regional hospitals; a government which claims it cannot subsidize dialysis treatment and prevent our compatriots from dying; a government unable to clear billions in arrears to contractors, independent power producers, school feeding caterers, public sector workers, teacher and nursing trainees, national service personnel, DACF, NHIS, GETFund; a government unable to employ thousands of young graduates who offered nursing and PharmD and have had to stay at home for years; a government which embarrassingly owed the Black Queens for many months until recent fierce mass agitations; and a government desperately seeking an IMF bailout must not be allowed to spend US$48million (GHS602million) for an 18-day event, particularly when Parliament has generously approved GHS100million. We shall surely defeat this lootocratic scheme!

    For God and country.

  • Ghana’s cocoa bean production projected to reach 492,000 metric tonnes; a significant 27% decline

Ghana’s cocoa bean production projected to reach 492,000 metric tonnes; a significant 27% decline

Reports from undisclosed stakeholders within Ghana’s cocoa industry have disclosed that cocoa production in the 2023–2024 crop season is anticipated to reach approximately 492,000 metric tonnes, marking a significant decline of about 27.9% from the previous year’s yield of 683,000 metric tonnes.

This disclosure was made to JoyBusiness by  an insider from Ghana’s cocoa industry.

The decline in Ghana cocoa production has been blamed on several factors, including illegal mining, smuggling activities, the hike in swollen shoot disease and adverse weather conditions, among others.

This comes after Ghana produced about 750,000 metric tonnes of cocoa beans in the 2021–2022 season.

However, there has been a consistent decline in cocoa production over the past three years, raising concerns among stakeholders.

Reuters has reported that Ghana’s cocoa output for the 2023–24 season is expected to decrease by nearly 40%, falling below the target of 820,000 metric tonnes.

Expressing concerns over the production shortfall, the first source told Reuters that strong seasonal winds and insufficient rainfall have exacerbated the situation, with the current output forecasted to be about 500,000 tons for the season.

Addressing the challenges, the source noted, “Unfortunately, the cause of the decline is not one that could be remedied immediately through human intervention.”

Earlier this month, the regulator revealed that about 500,000 hectares of cocoa farmlands had been destroyed by the cocoa swollen shoot virus.

The second source remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances of recovery despite the current circumstances.

COCOBOD has yet to comment on the matter.

  • Gomoa chiefs warn Budumburam squatters to move in 3 days; charges govt to stay out of the matter

Gomoa chiefs warn Budumburam squatters to move in 3 days; charges govt to stay out of the matter

Squatters of zone E of the Budumburam camp have been left to their fate to find their next place of stay after the Chiefs of Gomoa Buduburam in the Central region issued a three-day ultimatum for them to vacate the area for market women who sell along the main road of  Budumburam or face forced eviction.

Addressing the press on February 23, 2024, the Omankrado of Gomoa Fetteh, Nana Kwesi Quansah, stated that the move is aimed at expediting the construction works currently ongoing on the main Kasoa Cape Coast highway.

“We are about to demolish the camp. Hence, residents there have three days to move. This is among us and we are doing this for our women who are currently in distress.

The camp is housing bad people. So we are demolishing it to construct markets, senior high schools (SHS), and police stations, among others, for the good people of Gomoa land so that we shall be free from the bad things the camp is engaging in now,” the chief stated.

He further went on to charge the government, their MPs and their DCEs to stay away from the intended move, as  they intend not to politicise this move.

According to him, they have all failed to deliver on their mandate; hence, the chiefs have taken it upon themselves to help their women.

“We ask the government , our Member of Parliament (MP), the District Chief Executive (DCE), and the Vice President, who is currently the NPP’s flagbearer, to stay out of this; we aren’t doing any politics here. The DCE, because he wanted our votes, wasn’t really forthcoming last time so this time around, we are asking him to stay in his lane,” the chief added.

The market women deserve t o be given the land for their activities instead of the robbers and ‘bad people’ occupying the camp and causing distress in the town, according to Nana Kwesi Quansah

He said, “Our market women are equally human; they also deserve to be there. It’s better they stay there than the bad guys the camp is currently housing.”

The Buduburam camp, created in 1990 by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), served as a sanctuary for Liberian refugees escaping the civil war in their homeland.

Its establishment aimed to provide shelter and support to those displaced by conflict.

Following its inception, Buduburam functioned as a refuge for over two decades. However, in 2012, the UNHCR concluded its assistance and urged the refugees to pursue one of two options: either repatriate to Liberia or integrate into Ghanaian society.

Consequently, the camp was officially closed, marking the end of its role as a temporary haven for displaced individuals fleeing the horrors of war.

Rickshaw, motorcycle riders threaten to boycott 2024 elections if govt fails to formalise their operations

Tricycle and motorcycle taxi riders nationwide are considering boycotting the 2024 general elections if the government doesn’t show a sincere commitment to formalising their operations beforehand.

At a press conference in Kumasi on February 22, 2024, following a regional executives’ meeting, Mr. Hamza Hafiz, the National Secretary of the National Union of Tricycle Operators of Ghana (NUTOG), highlighted the persistent harassment they face from law enforcement due to the lack of regulation in their industry.

He underscored the crucial role tricycle operations play in providing employment, benefiting over 35,000 individuals and contributing to reducing unemployment.

However, Mr. Hamza expressed disappointment with the perceived indifference of political parties, particularly the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), towards legalising their operations.

He stated that the threat of an election boycott would only be withdrawn if a political party demonstrated genuine commitment to their cause, engaged with them, and promised to legalise their operations if elected. Mr. Hamza urged the NPP government to take immediate steps to formalise their operations to ensure sustainable employment opportunities for the youth, warning of losing support from tricycle and motorcycle taxi riders if action is not taken.

Medeama knocked out of CAF Champions League after Yanga’s win over Belouizdad

Medeama’s aspirations for a spot in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals were dashed after the Young Africans secured a crucial victory against CD Belouizdad in Tanzania on Saturday.

Hoping for a favourable outcome from the Young Africans versus Belouizdad match to keep their chances alive, Medeama saw their hopes fade following their 1-0 defeat to Al Ahly just a day earlier in Kumasi.

The match at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium witnessed young Africans dominating from the outset. Yahia Abass set the pace with an opening goal for the hosts in the 43rd minute.

Shortly after the second half commenced, Stephane Aziz Ki doubled the lead, further dimming Medeama’s hopes.

Kennedy Musonda, the Zambian striker, added to Belouizdad’s woes by extending the lead just two minutes later, leaving little room for a comeback.

Joseph Gnadou sealed the victory for the Young Africans with a goal six minutes before the final whistle.

Despite the setback, Medeama remains resolute as they gear up for their final group-stage match in Algeria. They are determined to secure a third-place finish.

With this defeat, Al Ahly leads the group with nine points, while the Young Africans hold the second position with eight points.

Bordeaux player reportedly put into induced coma after serious head injury during a match

Former Major League Soccer star Alberth Elis has reportedly been placed in an induced coma following a severe head injury sustained during a match for Bordeaux.

Reports from France indicate that Elis collided head-on with Donatien Gomes just moments into Bordeaux’s game against Guingamp in Ligue 2.

The collision was disturbing, causing the match to halt for eight minutes and visibly upsetting players from both teams.

Although Elis regained consciousness at the stadium after being stretchered off, he was subsequently placed in an induced coma while being transported to the hospital, as reported by France Bleu.

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe has sent a message of support to Elis on Instagram, writing: “All my positive thoughts go to you, Alberth Elis.”

Bordeaux went on to win the game 1-0, with manager Albert Riera dedicating the victory to his stricken star.

Elis is an experienced Honduras international with 64 caps, and he has made 60 appearances in total for Bordeaux, scoring 15 goals.

He played 101 times for Houston during his time in the US.

Bordeaux are awaiting Elis’ test results and one would have to think that the majority of their thoughts are focused on the winger.

They next play on Saturday against Rodez, and are currently 13th in Ligue 2.

  • Man Utd make move for Ross Barkley transfer

Man Utd make move for Ross Barkley transfer

Manchester United’s potential surprise move to acquire Ross Barkley from Luton this summer has caught attention, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly leading the pursuit.

The Sun has linked Barkley to United, citing Ratcliffe’s previous admiration for the player during his time at Nice.

During Barkley’s stint with the French club, reports indicated Ratcliffe’s influence in urging manager Lucien Favre to increase Barkley’s playing time in Ligue 1 matches.

United’s interest in Barkley is said to be part of their midfield reinforcement plans, considering potential departures like Casemiro and Sofyan Amrabat’s return to Fiorentina.

Barkley’s acquisition may not pose a significant financial hurdle for United, especially if Luton faces relegation and seeks to offload players.

Barkley’s current season statistics reflect his importance to Luton’s relegation battle, with 20 Premier League appearances, three goals, and three assists.

The team’s position, currently 18th in the league and just one point behind Everton, underscores Barkley’s pivotal role.

Luton’s immediate focus shifts to the FA Cup fifth-round clash against Manchester City midweek, followed by a Premier League encounter with Aston Villa next weekend.

  • Biography of late former chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Ntumy

Biography of late former chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Ntumy

Former chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy, was born on September 22, 1958, in Osramane-Dadease.

Rising from humble beginnings, he emerged as a figure of profound faith and influence.

Throughout his remarkable life, Apostle Ntumy devoted himself to education, ministry, and service, leaving behind a lasting legacy that touched countless lives.

As people come together on February 24, 2024, to commemorate his memory at a funeral held at the Forecourt of the State House, many are reflecting on the extraordinary journey of a man who embodied faith, resilience, and generosity.

He passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, after battling a prolonged illness at the age of 65.

Below is his biography, as provided in the funeral brochure:

The late Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy was born at Osramane-Dadease on September 22, 1958, to Opanin Kwaku Kumah and Obaapanin Adwoa Tiwaah from Osramane-Dadease, near Kete-Krachi. Both of his parents have gone to be with the Lord.

He was the fifth of the ten children of his parents. His father, who was affectionately called Agya Aku, officially named him after his elder brother, Kwabena Ntumy.

    His Education

In 1964, at the age of six, Ntumy began his education at the Osramane Local Authority Primary “B” School. When he was in class one, he transferred to Primary “A” School, where he joined his colleagues in class three instead of class two on the advice of his friend, Joseph Ntumy. In 1973, he completed the Middle School Leaving Certificate examination with distinction. Kwabena, as he was affectionately called within family circles, became the school prefect in his final year.

Although he passed the entrance examinations for both secondary school and Teachers’ Training College, our brother preferred the latter. He, therefore, enrolled at Atebubu Teachers’ Training College in 1973 at the age of 15 and passed out on July 7, 1977, with a Teachers’ Certificate “A” at the age of 19. He was among the seventh batch of students who graduated from the College that year.

On the higher level of the academic ladder, Michael Kwabena Ntumy won a scholarship in 1992, which allowed him to attend a month-long intensive Advanced Christian Leadership Seminar in Singapore. He also studied at the Regents Theological College in Nantwich (affiliated with the University of Manchester, UK), and obtained a Master of Theology degree in 2000. His pursuit of knowledge motivated him to study for a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Theology and Organisational Governance from an affiliated college of the Southern Christian University in Florida, USA, where he graduated in 2008.

    His Conversion to Christianity

In 1979, whilst working at Yendi, the news of his sick mother and the inability of his “spiritually powerful” father to save her, moved Michael Kwabena Ntumy to seek a divine solution. This landed him at the “Saturday Bush Prayer Meeting” of The Church of Pentecost on January 27, 1979, on the invitation of Mrs Christiana Apea, a member of the church. At the end of the service, Kwabena Ntumy accepted Christ as his Lord and personal Saviour and was baptised by Pastor Isaac Narkujah on February 4, 1979. Michael was a man of great faith in the Lord, and he never gave up on the Lord.

    His Marriage and Family Life

It was at Yendi that Michael Kwabena Ntumy met his beloved wife, Mrs Martha Adwoa Diako Ntumy, the only woman he ever knew, and got married to her on August 8, 1982, at the age of 24. The union was blessed with five sons and one daughter who are well positioned in society of influence. Apostle Michael Ntumy loved his wife to the core and was always there to support her with everything within his power. Mrs Martha Ntumy was his closest friend, advisor, nurse, and pastor. They moved and worked together in all facets of their lives, went through challenges, faced life’s battles, and conquered together. Indeed, Apostle Dr. Ntumy and his wife were the epitome of a good Christian marriage.

Michael took the education of his children seriously. As a man who valued education, he challenged the children and the countless number of other people’s children he enrolled in school to pass his level of education. He dared the children to strive for nothing but excellence. As a result, many have become doctors, aeronautic engineers, software engineers, businessmen and women, chartered accountants, teachers, economists, pastors, pastors’ wives, among others.

    His Work Experience

On September 15, 1977, Michael left home for his first job as a professional teacher with the Ministry of Education in the Yendi District. He taught at the Zohe Experimental Primary, one of the leading schools in the Yendi District charged with the responsibility of preparing students for the Common Entrance Examination.

In 1984, at the age of 26, he was called into the full-time ministry of The Church of Pentecost. After ministerial training at the Pentecost Bible Training Centre at Madina, Accra, he was stationed at Tamale until 1985 when he was transferred to Krachi Nkwanta. In 1988, he was posted to Liberia as a missionary and was stationed in Buchanan City. During the Liberian civil war when Charles Taylor’s National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) rebels captured some of the resident citizens of the five West African nations, including Ghana, that supplied troops for the operations of ECOMOG, Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy, his wife, their four children and a niece were taken hostage and transported to a rebel camp known as Flamingo Camp, nicknamed “The Camp of No Return” where they spent 185 days.

Even though many of the hostages lost their lives, the Lord miraculously saved the lives of Apostle Ntumy and his household. They returned to Ghana in 1991. In that same year, he was called into the office of apostle and was posted to La Cὃte d’Ivoire as National Head. Whilst on a ministerial trek in La Cὃte d’Ivoire in July 1992, he and his wife were involved in a terrible motor accident. Little did we know it was going to lead to a paralysis in future.

In 1996, he was transferred from La Cὃte d’Ivoire to France as the church’s first Resident Missionary and National Head.

In 1998, at the age of 40, he was elected Chairman of The Church of Pentecost. After completing a 10-year tenure as Chairman, Apostle Dr. Ntumy was posted to Germany as National Head. However, after a surgical operation on his cervical spine in France, he became paralysed in the lower parts of his body. Being a man of faith who was highly optimistic, he did not let his disability incapacitate him. From 2013, he served as the church’s Director of Literary Works until September 24, 2023, when he retired in Hamburg, Germany.

    His Generosity

As a family, we can testify that Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy related well with his siblings, nephews, nieces, in-laws, and all the extended family members, including outsiders. He treated everyone equally and fairly. He gave equal opportunities to all the people he encountered based on their strength. He was simply a good man.

Apostle Ntumy’s generosity was unparalleled. Although he had six biological children, he catered for 35 adopted children who all equally enjoyed his benevolence and fatherly care. As emphatically quoted in His retirement brochure, “The Ntumy family goes beyond his six (6) biological children.”

He paid house rents, financed the education of countless people as well as the weddings of many couples, and paid the medical bills of people without expecting anything in return. Without his benevolence, the future of the children he raised would have been jeopardised. Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy was one of the finest and most generous men who ever lived. He considered every need as an opportunity to invest in somebody’s life. He will be sorely missed.

The people of Dadease, his native community in Osramane, have been impacted by his evangelistic zeal as most of them have been converted to Christ through The Church of Pentecost. He also supports them in diverse ways. The entire Osramane community cannot forget his support for the school named after him: Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy Junior High School. Another landmark achievement that the local populace of Krachi cannot forget is the well-stocked and state-of-the-art public library he built at Osramane to enhance the knowledge base of people in the community and beyond.

Apostle Dr. Ntumy’s unflinching love and passion for the development of his community were unparalleled. Before his demise, he initiated a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the New Osramane community since their resettlement at their current location by the Volta River Authority as a result of the displacement of their old settlement following the construction of the Akosombo Dam. His dream was to celebrate the 60th anniversary this year and had come out with drawings to build a community centre and clinic as part of the anniversary.

Apostle Dr. Ntumy also donated sports gear with silverware for the football teams that excelled during tournaments in the Krachi West Municipal Assembly. He supported the Krachi Traditional Council in diverse ways and was even honoured by Nana Besemuna Mprah III (known in private life as COP [Rtd.] J.C. Mprah), the Omanhene of Krachi Traditional Area, by naming a street in the Krachi West Municipality after him: Apostle Dr. Ntumy Street.

    His Glorious Home-Call:

He returned to Ghana on December 18, 2023, to finally rest from his active duty as a minister. We thought we were going to enjoy his wisdom, counsel, and all the great things he was made up of. Little did we know that, his Maker and Lord had retired him from earthly duties as well. On Wednesday, December 27, 2023, the peaceful and glorious clarion call welcomed him to his eternal home, and he gladly answered. Though the void remaining is huge, he has left in our hearts great testimonies, legacies, and a reason to thrive in life and ministry.
He was born a hero, and he died a legend in the Lord.

We as a family know that Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy has fought the good fight, finished the race and thus, has been rewarded with the crown of righteousness. His labour has not been in vain. We know that we will meet him one day on that beautiful shore. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace!

We had to do something – Harry Kane speaks on Bayern-Tuchel exit agreement

Following Bayern Munich’s confirmation that manager Thomas Tuchel will depart this summer, Harry Kane emphasises the need for action among him and his teammates.

The club faces the possibility of a trophy-less season, currently trailing Bayer Leverkusen by eight points in the Bundesliga and suffering a 1-0 defeat to Lazio in the Champions League round of 16 first leg.

Additionally, they were eliminated from the DFB-Pokal by Saarbrucken in November.

Amidst speculation linking Xabi Alonso and Jurgen Klopp to the managerial role, Kane stresses the importance of persevering and continuing to fight.

Despite these setbacks, Kane stresses the importance of perseverance and determination among him and his teammates.

The England captain said, after scoring twice against RB Leipzig in a 2-1 win: “The club made a decision. We players have to show our responsibility to the manager, our responsibility to the club to give everything we have for the season.

“We knew that as players, we haven’t been performing as well as we can. You can’t just sit there and talk about it. You have to fight and work hard at every moment and that’s what we did today.”

Kane scored a brilliant last-minute winner against Leipzig and has been in remarkable form this season, netting 31 goals in 31 games in all competitions.

Nevertheless, the 30-year-old is continuing to chase the first senior trophy of his career.

Bayern are next in action against Freiburg on Friday. They will then face Lazio in the second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie the following Tuesday.

  • Illegitimate GRA Boss will be dealt with – PAC chair vows

Illegitimate GRA Boss will be dealt with – PAC chair vows

Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), James Klutse Avedzi, has issued a warning to Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Rev. Ammishadai Owusu-Amoah, indicating that he will be personally held accountable for working without the renewal of his contract.

Rev. Ammishadai attracted public attention by declining to respond to a question posed by Samuel Nartey George, a member of the Public Accounts Committee and MP for Ningo-Prampram, regarding his age.

Accompanied by Deputy Finance Minister Abena Osei Asare, the GRA chief struggled to provide a straightforward answer.

Despite efforts by some committee members to dismiss the question, Rev. Ammishadai eventually admitted that his two-year contract, which was awarded to him after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60, had expired without renewal.

In an interview with EIB Network’s Parliamentary Correspondent Ibrahim Alhassan, Committee Chairman James Klutse Avedzi cautioned that the GRA chief would face consequences if he continued to hold office without a contract.

The Ketu North MP defended his decision to entertain the public interest question raised by the Ningo-Prampram MP.

“No, we don’t have it. He hasn’t given us the contract. He told us at the committee that when the issue came up and other members were trying to stop the member who asked the question or arguing the question should not be allowed, I said the question should be answered because the person is a public officer. Once you’re a public officer, there is nothing personal, especially about your age,” he said.

According to Mr. Avedzi, individuals above retirement age can be engaged but not beyond 5 years and thus the decision to engage the GRA boss is not illegal.

“The law says if you are above a certain age, you go on retirement, but if your expertise is needed, you can be given a contract. So if I’m over 60 years old and I’m given a contract, I’m covered.

“I said, Why can’t you tell us your age, Why can’t you tell us that you have a contract? So, go ahead and answer the question. And he said, ‘Oh, I am 62 and so so and so months. I have a contract.’

“The law says that when you’re 60 years old and you’re given a contract, you can be given a two-year contract that can be renewed for another two years but all put together, it must not be more than five years. That’s what the law says,” he added.

Mr. Avedzi wondered why the Commissioner General had not been given another contract after the expiration of the earlier one.

“So if you’re 62 and you have a contract, you’re covered. If you’re 63, you have a contract, and if that contract is renewed, you’re covered. But he told us that the renewal of his contract has not been done, as at the time we were asking him the questions.”

The former deputy minority leader, however, did not fault the GRA boss for his inability to explain why his contract had not been renewed. According to him, the matter rests with the appointing authority.

“He could not tell us the reason why he had not been given a contract. He’s not the one to give himself the contract; it’s the government or the minister. If I were the minister and I still wanted him to be there, I would just renew the contract for him.

“But if I don’t want him to be there, I will not renew it. If he continues to stay there without a contract, then he is breaking the law. He will be personally held liable. After the issue has come up and you have still not been given a renewal contract, are you still there? Then you’re working illegally,” he warned.

Govt has an outstanding US$2 million debt to settle in Agyapa Royalties deal – Reports

The expenditure incurred by the government on the failed Agyapa Royalties deal surpasses the previously reported US$12 million, as revealed by Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, CEO of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), during a recent disclosure to Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Even before the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament could receive detailed information regarding the expenses, a breakdown of the entities that received payments from the US$12 million sum was already made available online.

Bright Simons, Vice President of IMANI Africa, shared a breakdown on X (formerly Twitter), illustrating how 10 entities, both local and international, were paid varying amounts totaling up to the reported sum.

However, the document he shared also indicated that there remained an outstanding balance of US$2 million owed to certain entities at the time the deal was suspended, suggesting that the total expenditure recorded in the books would reach US$14 million.

Among the notable payments, Imara Holdings, serving as the transaction advisor, received the largest share, amounting to over US$9.6 million.

Various legal and audit firms also received payments of varying amounts, along with over US$1.5 million disbursed as staff salaries.

Additionally, the Ghana Stock Exchange received a payment as well.

  • Jordan Ayew at it again! See pinpoint cross that set Crystal Palace up for the 3-0 win over Burnley

Jordan Ayew delivered a precise cross into the opponent’s box, which found Chris Richards’ head and ended up in the net for Crystal Palace’s first goal in the 68th minute of their Premier League clash against Burnley at Selhurst Park on February 24.

Just three minutes later, Jordan Ayew scored a goal of his own by connecting with a cross from Matheus Franca into the opponent’s goal area.

Jean Philippe Mateta secured the victory for Crystal Palace with a goal in the 79th minute.

This marks the second consecutive game in which Ayew has scored, showcasing his pivotal role in Palace’s late-season surge.

Ayew’s goal came from a well-executed finish after receiving a precise cross from Matheus Franca from the left side.

With this goal, the former Swansea attacker has now scored four goals in the current campaign, in addition to providing his ninth assist of the season.

Manchester United’s assistant coach Eric Ramsay named new Minnesota coach – Reports

Eric Ramsay, assistant coach at Manchester United, has signed a contract to take over as coach of MLS side Minnesota United, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Minnesota United had been without a permanent manager since parting ways with Adrian Heath last October, just two games before the end of the 2023 regular season, resulting in their failure to qualify for the postseason.

Following Heath’s departure, the team employed two interim managers, first Sean McCauley, and then Cameron Knowles.

Knowles will continue in his role as interim manager when Minnesota United kick off their season this Saturday against Austin FC.

At 32 years old, Ramsay will become the youngest full-time managerial appointment in MLS history, surpassing current Houston Dynamo manager Ben Olsen, who was 33 when he was appointed by D.C. United in November 2010, initially serving as interim manager before being appointed permanently.

  • FIFA commemorates Ghana’s Alberta Sackey’s 2003 iconic Women’s World Cup goal

FIFA commemorates Ghana’s Alberta Sackey’s 2003 iconic Women’s World Cup goal

FIFA recently commemorated an unforgettable moment in women’s football history: the iconic goal scored by former Ghanaian footballer Alberta Sackey during the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Alberta Sackey is best known for her remarkable contributions to Ghana’s national women’s football team, the Black Queens.

She notably represented Ghana in two World Cups, in 1999 and 2003, with the latter tournament leaving a lasting impression on Ghanaians.

Sackey’s unforgettable moment occurred during the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup match between Ghana and Australia on September 3, 2003.

Leading up to this match, the Black Queens had a challenging start to the tournament, suffering defeats against China and Russia.

However, in the match against Australia, Alberta Sackey, serving as the captain of the Black Queens, showcased her brilliance by scoring Ghana’s first goal with a powerful strike, revitalising her team’s spirits and leaving a lasting legacy on the tournament.

In a move reminiscent of her football prowess, Sackey skillfully intercepted the ball from an Australian player, deftly manoeuvred it, and then delivered a powerful strike that earned her the esteemed title of Goal of the Tournament.

Adding to her stellar performance, Sackey concluded the game with another exceptional goal, securing Ghana’s 2-1 victory over Australia.

Despite her outstanding efforts, the win proved insufficient as the Black Queens were ultimately eliminated from the tournament, finishing in third place.

Now, 21 years later, Sackey’s goal remains etched in football history as one of the most memorable moments from that tournament, rightfully earning recognition from FIFA.

  • Man Utd icon calls for age limit in managerial jobs after Crystal Palace’s Roy Hodgson exit

Man Utd icon calls for age limit in managerial jobs after Crystal Palace’s Roy Hodgson exit

Former Man Utd forward and member of the 1999 treble-winning team, Dwight Yorke, has advocated for the implementation of a managerial age cap to create more opportunities for younger coaches.

Yorke’s remarks came in response to Roy Hodgson’s departure from Crystal Palace, with the 76-year-old being succeeded by Oliver Glasner.

Yorke suggests that an age cap would afford younger managers greater chances in the game while allowing experienced figures like Hodgson to contribute their expertise in other capacities within the club.

“Roy Hodgson has been absolutely magnificent throughout his career and for what he has done in the game,” Yorke told Instant Casino.

“From a personal point of view, young managers need to be given the chance. Roy needs to be respected for the work he has done but there comes a time when these managers over 70 need to be moved on.

“As players, we have to retire and referees have to retire so managers should also be able to retire. I just feel like there should be a mandate and a cutoff point when managers get to a certain age.

“I’m not saying these managers can’t be involved in football; Roy could be a director of football, but if you’re a football manager at 70 years-old, there should be a mandate in place.”

Yorke’s proposal introduces a fresh perspective, yet a cursory look at the current managerial landscape reveals a balanced average age of 49, with a projected decrease anticipated upon the departure of the league’s most senior member, 56-year-old Jurgen Klopp, this summer.

Presently, the league boasts six managers under the age of 45, with Vincent Kompany of Burnley ranking as the youngest at 37.

As Hodgson continues his recovery from illness, Palace supporters are optimistic for a revitalised performance under new management. Glasner will oversee his debut match this Saturday, as Palace hosts struggling Burnley at Selhurst Park.

  • Partey fit for play soon? Arteta provide updates

Partey fit for play soon? Arteta provide updates

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided updates on the long-term injuries to Thomas Partey and Jurrien Timber.

Arteta acknowledged that Timber may potentially recover from his ACL injury before the conclusion of the season.

The Dutch international, who joined Ajax during the summer, garnered numerous accolades for his impressive performances in preseason.

However, he has been sidelined since sustaining a knee injury in Arsenal’s opening Premier League match against Nottingham Forest.

Regarding Partey, Arteta hinted that the midfielder could be poised to make his return to action in the upcoming match against Newcastle on Saturday evening. Partey has been limited to just four appearances in the Premier League this season due to various injury setbacks.

Talking during his press conference, Arteta said [via football.london]: “Will Timber be able to return before the end of the season? I really hope so. He’s doing really well. He’s been with some players on the pitch. He’s going to start to do some bits with us on the pitch in the next week or so. Then we’ll have to see how he’s doing, his confidence level, and his fitness level. Hopefully, the answer will be yes.

“Will Partey return this week? Let’s see. We have another session today. He’s been out for many, many months now. We need to really nail the timing of when he has enough in the tank to compete. But I think he’s very close.”

Timber has been steadily progressing and took his initial steps back onto the field during the mid-season training camp in Dubai.

Since then, the 22-year-old has intensified his rehabilitation efforts. Meanwhile, Partey’s absence has unfortunately become a recurring theme for the Gunners.

However, with the additions of Declan Rice and Jorginho over the past 18 months, Partey’s significance within the squad has diminished.

As Arsenal continues their pursuit of the title, they will face Newcastle United on Saturday, February 24. Eager to rebound from their recent Champions League defeat to Porto, the team will aim to start strong and regain momentum.

  • Poch picks Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool as favourites for Carabao Cup

Poch picks Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool as favourites for Carabao Cup

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has offered a response to Jurgen Klopp’s assertion that Liverpool is not the favourite for the Carabao Cup final.

However, the Premier League standings paint a contrasting picture, with Liverpool holding a commanding lead of 25 points over Pochettino’s Chelsea, who currently sit in 10th place.

However, with Liverpool in the midst of an injury crisis, Klopp recently said, “Will we be big favourites? Definitely not. Since we played them (Chelsea), they have improved a lot, and it will be tricky.”

Pochettino has now responded to Klopp’s comments at his pre-final press conference, hinting that the German might be playing mind games ahead of their Wembley showdown.

“Because he’s one of the best, with Pep, coaches in the world. He’s clever enough,” he began. “He knows that when you play a final, circumstances can happen. If they are not favourites, we are not favourites [laughs]. They have the experience to compete like a team, be involved in different finals. For some of us, it’s maybe their first final. He is clever enough.”

The Reds will be missing key players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Curtis Jones, and Diogo Jota for the final. However, Klopp remains hopeful that Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah, and Dominik Szoboszlai, who were absent during Wednesday’s victory over Luton Town, might still play a role in some capacity.

Thiago Silva’s availability for Chelsea is uncertain, although Pochettino refrained from definitively ruling out the Brazilian for Sunday’s highly-anticipated clash.

This marks the third meeting between Liverpool and Chelsea in the League Cup final. Chelsea secured victory after extra time in 2005, marking Jose Mourinho’s inaugural trophy at Stamford Bridge. In 2022, Liverpool emerged triumphant, with stand-in goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher scoring the decisive penalty in a thrilling shootout.

All eyes will be on Wembley this weekend for what promises to be a captivating final.

Following the match, Chelsea will turn their attention to FA Cup action against Leeds United the following Wednesday, aiming to remain competitive in pursuit of additional silverware during what has been a challenging season.

  • Life in Saudi Arabia “is so hard” – Riyad Mahrez’s wife Taylor Ward opens up

Life in Saudi Arabia “is so hard” – Riyad Mahrez’s wife Taylor Ward opens up

Taylor Ward, the wife of Riyad Mahrez, has candidly discussed the challenges of adjusting to life in Saudi Arabia following the winger’s transfer during the summer.

Ward shared her emotional journey on “Married To The Game,” a reality series that showcases the experiences of partners of footballers including Ilkay Gundogan, Jorginho, Matt Turner, and James Tarkowski.

The Algerian’s move to the Saudi Pro League after 10 seasons in England came as a shock to Ward, who suddenly faced the prospect of moving away from her native Manchester with the couple’s young daughter. “I feel like it is so hard, there are times I can’t, I just don’t like it,” confessed Ward.

The model recounted a story where she asked to use the hotel pool, only to be told it was off limits. “I won’t lie, I had a freakout yesterday. I called the hotel to ask, ‘I’m coming with my baby, What do people wear around the pool?’, I know it is a lot more conservative there and you have to dress a certain way. ‘

“I said, ‘I just want to check when I come with a baby: what is the best thing to wear, Do I need to wear something covered if I am going in the water?’ “They were like, ‘Oh no, sorry, it’s just a man’s pool, it is just a gents pool’”.

The summer transfer window in Saudi Arabia witnessed a surge in the signings of top-tier players, marking an unprecedented spending spree in the league. However, reports suggest that several players and their families have encountered difficulties adapting to life in the kingdom.

England’s Jordan Henderson terminated his contract with Al-Ettifaq after just five months, despite enduring significant financial consequences, as he struggled to settle in the league. Eager to continue playing European football ahead of this summer’s European Championship, the midfielder subsequently joined Dutch powerhouse Ajax.

Meanwhile, on the field, Riyad Mahrez’s Al-Ahli team has encountered challenges, failing to mount a title challenge and suffering defeat upon their return from the Saudi winter break last week.

Currently positioned third in the league table, they trail leaders Al-Hilal by 16 points and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr by nine. Mahrez and his teammates are set to face struggling Al-Tai in their upcoming match this Saturday.

  • Youthful squad not a justification for Chelsea’s lacklustre performances -Malo Gusto

Youthful squad not a justification for Chelsea’s lacklustre performances -Malo Gusto

Malo Gusto has emphasised that youth should not serve as an excuse for Chelsea’s underperformance this season.

He has set his sights on defeating Liverpool in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final to rejuvenate the team and propel them beyond their struggles in the midtable of the Premier League.

Chelsea’s turbulent season, marked by spells of poor form, has often directed scrutiny towards manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The young squad recognises that clinching silverware at Wembley could serve as the spark needed to reignite their campaign.

At just 20 years old, Gusto is among several key players in Chelsea’s squad who are under the age of 25, including Enzo Fernández, Cole Palmer, Moisés Caicedo, Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Conor Gallagher. Despite their youth, Gusto insists that age should not hinder their performance on the pitch.

“Yes, we have to take the opportunity,” Gusto said. “We don’t have a choice. We have to win every game. We are young but it is not an excuse.

“We have a lot of quality and we want to win everything. We are Chelsea. It’s a good opportunity for us to improve and keep pushing.

“Of course, I have a big chance, and the team as well, to win a trophy early in the season. I think it can be nice for our mentality to help us become better until the end of the season.”

With Chelsea currently positioned ninth in the Premier League table, securing a domestic cup victory may emerge as their sole pathway to European football next season.

“Yeah, it’s a new project. I think maybe we have to take more time than the other teams,” Gusto said.

“This trophy can be good for this young team. We are young but in the pitch it’s not about how old you are, you know? You have to keep pushing game after game.”

Injuries to Reece James, a player Gusto has admired for some time, opened up a place at right-back for him this season.

  • Arteta charges squad to be “tricky and streetwise” after Porto loss

Arteta charges squad to be “tricky and streetwise” after Porto loss

Mikel Arteta emphasized the importance of his team mastering the art of being “tricky” and “streetwise” in specific situations following Arsenal’s loss to Porto in the Champions League first leg on Wednesday.

Statistics revealed that the ball was in play for approximately 50 minutes during the match, indicating that Porto’s tactics had unsettled Arteta’s side.

Declan Rice subsequently encouraged his teammates to demonstrate greater “savviness” in future encounters.

Asked whether his players are capable of being “bad guys” on the pitch, Arteta told a news conference on Friday: “I don’t know [about being a] bad guy but you have to be tricky. You have to be smart, you have to be streetwise, and you have to try to take advantage of every situation, and they know that.

“That’s a thing that has to be developed. The best players they have, they have that.”

Arsenal have been in superb form in the league in 2024; they have scored 21 goals and conceded just two, winning five consecutive matches in the process.

If Arsenal secures a victory against Newcastle on Saturday, they will narrow the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to just two points. Liverpool, managed by Jurgen Klopp, are set to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

Despite the potential for Arsenal to gain ground, Arteta believes that his team is perceived as outsiders in the Premier League title race.

“I feel a lot of excitement, especially internally, because we are right in the mix and we want to continue to be there because we are in the Champions League,” Arteta said.

“We have a fantastic game to play at the Emirates and externally, it probably is different because the expectations are much more focused in the other two teams [Liverpool and Manchester City].”

Arteta was cleared of a Football Association charge in December following comments he made about the officials in charge of Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle at St. James’ Park in the reverse fixture in November.

The Arsenal boss branded the VAR’s decision to award Newcastle’s winning goal “a disgrace” in his post-match news conference, but said on Friday that he feels as though refereeing decisions have improved since he voiced his opinion.

  • Chelsea after Bayer Leverkusen’s Boniface

    Chelsea after Bayer Leverkusen’s Boniface

Chelsea have identified Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface as a target for the summer, according to Bild.

Boniface, 23, has scored 10 goals and provided seven assists in 16 Bundesliga appearances this season and the Nigerian international’s transfer is reportedly valued at around €40 million, given that he has a contract until 2028.

The Blues have been linked with Boniface’s Nigeria teammate Victor Osimhen, but Napoli want his release clause of €130 million paid in full to let him go. Ivan Toney of Brentford is also on their shortlist, but his move would cost around €80 million.

Chelsea needs to watch their financial situation after spending over €1 billion across the last three transfer windows, and could be on the lookout for cheaper options.

O Dia reports that Flamengo striker Pedro is another possibility, with the 26-year-old scoring 13 goals from 34 games in the league in 2023 but being booed by his own fans recently after a poor performance.

Valencia, Levante seek a postponement of match following tragic fire in the city

Valencia and Levante have formally requested that La Liga postpone their respective matches this weekend in light of a tragic fire that occurred in the Spanish city on Thursday.

The devastating blaze, which engulfed two connected apartment blocks, resulted in the loss of at least four lives, with up to 15 individuals reported missing, according to Valencia’s emergency services.

Valencia is slated to play an away fixture against Granada in La Liga on Saturday at 2 p.m. local time. Seven hours later, Levante, a second division team, is scheduled to host FC Andorra in Valencia.

“The club deeply regrets what happened, wants to send a lot of strength to all the victims and publicly thanks the commendable work of the emergency services,” Valencia CF said in a statement.

“This Friday, the players and coaches of the men’s first team, the women’s first team and the VCF Academy teams will observe a respectful minute of silence at the beginning of their training sessions in memory of the victims.

“Likewise, the club has processed the request to postpone this Saturday’s match against Granada CF at the Nuevo Los Cármenes Stadium.”

Valencia also said it would fly flags at the club’s facilities at half-mast in line with the three days of mourning declared by the city.

Levante said in a statement they had requested for their game to be postponed and added: “We join in the pain of the families and friends of the victims and we express our gratitude to the emergency services for their commendable work in this terrible event.”

Following the tragic fire in Valencia, several other clubs across Spain expressed their condolences to the affected city.

“FC Barcelona offers its condolences to the families of the victims of the fire in Valencia and lends its support to those affected,” Barcelona wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

In a statement on their website, Real Madrid said: “Real Madrid C. “I will play for Germany again” – Toni Kroos return Germany ahead of Euro 2024

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has announced via social media that he will make a return to the Germany national team in preparation for this summer’s European Championship.

The 34-year-old, who retired from international football in 2021, had disclosed earlier this month that he was contemplating the decision ahead of Euro 2024, which is set to be hosted by Germany.

“Guys, short and painless: I will play for Germany again in March,” Kroos posted on Instagram.

“Why? Because I was asked by the national coach, I’m up for it, and I’m sure that a lot more is possible with the team at the European Championships than most people believe!”

Kroos made 106 appearances for Germany between 2010 and 2021, scoring 17 goals, and was a key member of the team that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

He retired after facing criticism for his performances in Euro 2020, when Germany were eliminated by England in the round-of-16.

The midfielder has been at his career-best for Real Madrid this season, helping them top the LaLiga table.

  • Ratcliffe gearing up for a major revamp at Man Utd in the upcoming summer

Ratcliffe gearing up for a major revamp at Man Utd in the upcoming summer

Sources close to Manchester United have revealed that the club is gearing up for a significant squad overhaul this summer, aiming to accelerate progress on the pitch under the new minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

While United does have funds available for the upcoming transfer window, concerns about the club’s financial standing, particularly regarding compliance with profit and sustainability regulations, are expected to constrain the available budget.

Discussions on recruitment with Ratcliffe and INEOS director Sir Dave Brailsford have highlighted the necessity of offloading players to bolster the financial resources. Despite United recording their highest player trading profit since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure in 2009 over the past year, additional player departures will be necessary this summer.

The futures of approximately 11 first-team players are uncertain, including the likes of Christian Eriksen, Raphaël Varane, Casemiro, Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Victor Lindelöf.

In preparation for the summer transfer window, Manchester United is aiming to secure the services of a striker and a defender while also enhancing the overall quality of their squad.

Manager Erik ten Hag has expressed concern about the team’s performance decline in the absence of key players like Lisandro Martínez and Luke Shaw due to injuries.

Additionally, there is an acknowledgement that Rasmus Højlund has been relied upon to play more matches than initially anticipated due to a lack of alternative options.

Højlund, the 21-year-old acquired for £72 million ($91m) last summer, has already participated in 30 games this season, which is only four matches shy of his total appearances for Atalanta last season.

Despite demonstrating his capabilities at United with six goals in his last six games, the club is keen on managing his workload for the upcoming season.

They plan to achieve this by recruiting another player to help alleviate the burden on Højlund and reduce the necessity for him to start every game.

Don’t box Asamoah Gyan; George Weah wasn’t better than him – Miracles to Gyan-NPP links

Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 election campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has come to the defence of the appointment of legendary Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan as the chairman of the sub-committee tasked with drafting the youth and sports aspects of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s manifesto for the 2024 elections.

Despite raised eyebrows and critics questioning Gyan’s competence to contribute meaningfully to policies shaping the future of sports and Ghanaian youth, Aboagye rebuked such scepticism on Asempa FM, emphasising the competence and intelligence of Asamoah Gyan.

Aboagye sees the opposition to Gyan’s appointment as indicative of a stereotype that views footballers as lacking the capacity to contribute meaningfully beyond the field.

He rejects attempts to pigeonhole Gyan solely as a football figure, arguing that he possesses the resourcefulness to occupy significant positions in the country.

Aboagye points to George Weah’s journey from footballer to President of Liberia, suggesting that if Weah could achieve such a feat, then Gyan, whom he regards as an even better footballer than Weah, should be more than capable of chairing a manifesto committee.

“Was Oppong Weah better than Asamoah Gyan? Didn’t he become president? If Oppong Weah, a footballer, could become president, then what’s wrong with Asamoah Gyan’s position? Are we saying a football player cannot draft a plan? A footballer became a president so why is it a jump too high for another footballer to chair an ordinary committee?

“We like to box people and label them but what we don’t know how to do is spot and harness talents. Let’s watch out for Asamoah Gyan. You’ll be amazed by the sort of delivery that young man will come up with,” he said.

On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, Asamoah Gyan was appointed as a member of the manifesto committee for Dr. Bawumia’s presidential campaign. Taking the helm of the youth and sports sub-committee, Gyan has been entrusted with leveraging his expertise to formulate ideas and strategies for sports advancement and the empowerment of Ghanaian youth.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye shed light on Dr. Bawumia’s rationale for selecting Gyan to lead the committee.

“Asamoah Gyan, at his young age, is already a legend. He has travelled across the world for years and has now retired. The best we can do is tap into his talent for wanting to fix our sports. Asamoah Gyan is a deep young man; he has a lot of ideas. If there is one person in the committee we believe is a masterstroke, then it is the selection of Asamoah Gyan. We are very grateful to him for helping us share his knowledge of sports,” he said.

We’ve done everything, what do they want? – ‘Angry’ Togbe Afede to protesting Hearts of Oak fans

Executive Board Chairman of Hearts of Oak, Togbe Afede, has expressed his frustration with a faction of the club’s supporters who staged a demonstration against the board this week.

Togbe Afede voiced his astonishment at the motives behind the protest, highlighting the substantial infrastructural advancements achieved during his tenure.

Speaking after touring the club’s Phobia House on Tuesday, he said, “Yes, I heard that some people were going on demonstrations yesterday and I asked myself, ‘what do they want? What do they want?’

“What do they want that we haven’t done? We’ve done everything. After all this, the only thing that Hearts doesn’t have is a stadium.

“We are streets ahead of all our counterparts. I would even say that we will come out as one of the very best in the whole of the subregion,” he added.

Togbe’s off-field work is showing in his over a decade in charge of the club but the results are not forthcoming on the field.

The club has won just one league title and two FA Cups.

Sports Ministry pays 7.5k dollars bonuses of Black Queens

Ministry of Youth and Sports has resolved the issue of outstanding bonuses owed to the senior women’s football team, the Black Queens.

According to various reports, each player involved in the qualifiers has received a cheque for GH₵85,000, equivalent to $7,500. These cheques were presented to the players at their hotel in Accra on Thursday, February 22, 2024.

Before the bonus settlement, the Ministry had already disbursed per diems for the Black Queens players on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

The team had been owed bonuses since October 2023, following their qualification for both the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the final round of the Olympic Games qualifiers.

The agreed-upon bonus amount was $2,500 per player, totaling $7,500 for three rounds of qualifiers.

This payment follows public outcry over the perceived unfair treatment of the women’s team, who had threatened to boycott the crucial Olympic Games qualifier against Zambia scheduled for February 23.

The payment fulfills a promise made by Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, Ghana FA President Kurt Okraku, and Gifty Oware-Mensah.

They visited the team on Wednesday night to assure them of their compensation.

Not even a toilet cleaner? – Obiri Boahen cries foul over Bawumia’s ‘betrayal’

Former Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, expresses concern over what he perceives as unfair treatment by the party over the years.

Despite his dedicated efforts to ensure the election of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as president, Boahen feels neglected by the party’s leadership, which he finds both shocking and worrying.

In an interview on NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’, Boahen voiced his frustrations, particularly noting the recent elevation of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer, despite what he views as his own overlooked contributions.

“If he [Dr. Bawumia] wants me on his team, that is okay, but if he doesn’t, I will keep doing my best for the party. I have done my best for this party from 2016 till date, but if I am not being recognised, that’s okay,” he said.

Adding that, “From 2017 till date, I have not been appointed by this government on any board. I am human, and this kind of situation can be painful and worrying. At least they should appoint me to clean toilets.”
