President of theGhana Football Association, Kurt Okraku faced criticism from some supporters at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium during the match between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC on Sunday, February 18, 2023.
Despite Kumasi Asante Kotoko winning the match 2-1 and claiming the Kufuor Cup, the trophy presentation was marred by boos and jeers directed at Okraku.
The disapproval continued as he left the stadium.
Okraku’s administration, along with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has been under scrutiny following a large-scale demonstration on February 14, 2024.
Thousands of Ghanaian football enthusiasts marched in Accra, urging reforms in Ghanaian football to address its declining state.
The demonstrators presented a 15-point petition to Parliament, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Ghana Football Association, demanding actions such as prompt payment of Black Queens’ bonuses, tax reductions for sports, and a reassessment of the national teams.

Founder of Streams of Joy International,Pastor Jerry Eze, has decided to relocate his concert due to criticism from both the media and sporting circles regarding the management of the Accra Sports Stadium
Originally slated to be held at the stadium on February 24, 2024, the NSPPD Ghana Prayer Conference will now take place at the Black Star/Independence Square.
The organisers attribute the change in venue to the necessity for a larger seating capacity.
A statement on Pastor Jerry Eze’s Instagram account explained, “A transition season is indeed upon the nation of Ghana. We have now mazed out the Accra Sports Stadium seating capacity and in a bid to accommodate the thousands of registered attendees, the NSPPG Ghana Prayer Conference will now be held at Independence Square.”
Unlike the Accra Sports Stadium, which has a closed area with a seating capacity of 45,000, Independence Square can accommodate up to 30,000 people in open space.
The backlash against the National Sports Authority (NSA) stemmed from their decision to close down the Accra Sports Stadium in December 2023 for all sporting activities, opting instead to rent it out for musical concerts.
These events caused significant damage to the football pitch, with large stages erected and bikers causing havoc by screeching across the surface with motorcycles.
It took several weeks for the NSA to restore the pitch to a satisfactory condition after the concerts in December 2023.
The decision to rent out the stadium for concerts just weeks before Ghana hosts the African Games, where the Accra Sports Stadium is slated to be utilised, raised eyebrows and drew criticism from many sports fanatics.
The club unveiled images of the new venue located in the North East Region on Friday, February 16.
This move signifies a departure from their previous home stadium, the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, where they had been playing since the beginning of the 2023–24 Ghana Premier League season.
Previously, Karela United used the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park in Anyinase as their home ground.
Concerns over the poor condition of the Aliu Mahama stadium during a recent match against Asante Kotoko in the FA Cup prompted the decision to relocate.
The unveiling of the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex aims to provide a better playing surface and improve the overall football experience for fans.
Karela United, currently ranked 16th in the league standings with 17 points from 17 games, hopes to leverage the new facility for success in the second round. Their first match at the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex will be against Legon Cities on February 25, 2024.
The young talent, who hails from England but has Ghanaian heritage, has gained recognition for his standout performances in recent weeks while playing for the Red Devils.
Mainoo’s impressive displays has earned praise from several pundits in England, with many advocating for his inclusion in the upcoming England national team call-up.
Wright, echoing these sentiments, expressed his belief that Mainoo deserves a spot in the next England squad during a recent interview.
“Kobbie Mainoo has to be in the next England squad. Such maturity in chaotic conditions is something we’ve not seen from an England player in a long time. Impressed every time I watch him,” the former England striker said.
Kobbie Mainoo is still qualified to play for Ghana’s senior national team, even though he has represented England on a number of U20 national teams.

The new aquatic center will be for swimming and triathlon.
TheUniversity of Ghana (Legon) stadium will be used as a games village, serving as the main games centre for accreditation, transport and other administrative issues, as well as a venue for arm wrestling, athletics (track and field events), squash and rugby.
Meanwhile, 49 nations have officially declared their intention to compete in the eagerly awaited competition.
However, five countries, namely Cape Verde, Senegal, Sao Tome and Principe, Sudan, and South Sudan, are yet to confirm their presence.
Constituency Organiser for Manhyia South, Alhaji Mustapha Alhasan for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been declared wanted by the Ghana Police Service.
This decision comes after a video circulated on social media showing him making threats of violence during the upcoming 2024 elections if any attempts are made to manipulate the vote.
In the video, the suspect is seen issuing warnings to the Electoral Commission (EC), the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), and individuals involved in the electoral process.
In the video, shared by GHOne TV on Twitter, Alhaji Mustapha is heard stating, “I am telling the EC officer, the woman and the NPP that if they are planning to steal the elections, we will show you how to win an election,” he said.
“I am telling them that we have informed John Mahama that, whether you like it or not, wherever you go, we are fully organised and we will show you how to win an election.
“We have won an election from the NPP before and we will show you. There would be war between us and if you dare, we will kill you,” the NDC organiser added.
He continued, “We are aware… if you plan on stealing the elections, we will show you. If you plan on not handing over power in case we win, we are aware and will show you,” he added.
According to a report from starrfm.com.gh, the leadership of the NDC in the Ashanti Region has responded to the summons from the Crime Office of the Central Command. They have assured that they will present Alhaji Mustapha Alhasan on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.
However, Alhasan, the accused, has refrained from providing further details, stating that the party has prohibited him from speaking to the media. Despite this, he disclosed to reporter Ivan Heathcote-Fumador that he was provoked by a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who suggested that the NPP would not concede power to anNDC administration.
“This guy I hear is from Asenso Boakye’s camp. He is a teacher.
“He provoked me by saying, ‘If President J.A. Kuffour was a fool to have handed over power to the NDC, President Akufo-Addo will not be a fool to hand over power to John Mahama’,” he recounted.
Alhaji Mustapha Alhasan is also reported to have said that he was unaware he was being captured on video at the time he was enraged, engaging in a banter with the supposed NPP man.
He told Starr FM that he felt betrayed that the video was edited to only display his side of the banter while every other provocation of his opposite man was craftily cropped out to hang him.
Alhaji Mustapha Alhasan has claimed that he was unaware he was being recorded when he engaged in a heated exchange with the supposed NPP member. Speaking to Starr FM, he expressed feeling betrayed by the selective editing of the video.
Alhasan asserted that only his side of the exchange was shown, while the provocations from the other individual were conveniently omitted, painting him in a negative light.
The 19-year-old son of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki was discovered deceased at the University of California, Berkeley, according to a Facebook post by his grandmother.
A student residing at the Clark Kerr Campus, a student housing facility, was found unconscious around 4:23 p.m. local time on Tuesday, as stated by UC Berkeley spokesperson Janet Gilmore.
The victim’s identity and demise were confirmed by his grandmother, Esther Wojcicki, in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
“My beloved grandson Marco Troper, age 19, passed away yesterday. Our family is devastated beyond comprehension,” Esther Wojcicki said.
She said Troper was “the most kind, loving, smart, fun and beautiful human being.”
The Berkeley Fire Department responded to the complex and notified the University of California Police Department that it was “attempting life-saving measures” on the student, Gilmore said. By the time campus police arrived, the BFD had pronounced him dead.
Gilmore said there were no signs of foul play and that an investigation into the death was underway.
According to his grandmother, Troper “was just getting started” in his second semester of freshman year at UC Berkeley, where he was majoring in math “and was truly loving it.”
Aside from “thriving academically,” Esther Wojcicki said, Troper had a “strong community of friends,” both from his dorm and his fraternity.
“At home, he would tell us endless stories of his life and friends at Berkeley,” she wrote.
“Marco’s life was cut too short. And we are all devastated, thinking about all the opportunities and life experiences that he will miss and that we will miss together,” Esther Wojcicki said. “Marco, we all love you and miss you more than you will ever know.”
Esther Wojcicki did not respond immediately to a request for comment from NBC News.
While the cause of Troper’s death remains undetermined, Esther Wojcicki mentioned to SF Gate that she suspects her grandson passed away due to a drug overdose. She stated that the family is awaiting the findings of a toxicology report.
“He ingested a drug, and we don’t know what was in it,” she told SF Gate, adding: “One thing we do know, it was a drug.”
Former Black Stars player, John Paintsil, has rejected assertions that Ghanaian football is experiencing a decline, stating that there are no fundamental issues with the sport in the country.
His comments follow the #SaveGhanaFootball protest, which took place on February 14, 2024.
During the demonstration, football enthusiasts and journalists voiced their discontent with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), citing various grievances, including the early exit of the Black Stars from the 2023 AFCON tournament during the group stages.
“I need to know the point of the demonstration. If it’s Ghana football, then we are not talking about the national team. The national team comes once every four months,” John Paintsil said.
He emphasised that the criticisms regarding the Black Stars’ underperformance are unfounded, as people seem to overlook the team’s achievements in qualifying for both the World Cup and AFCON tournaments.
“Even when we talk about the Black Stars, they qualified us for the World Cup. We have to see that we are still building. It’s not the responsibility of the FA to look after local-based players. It’s up to the teams to develop well,” Paintsil said.
After Agyemang Badu’s submission, John Paintsil should have gone home for disgracing himself, Black Stars, Fulham, Westham, Leicester etc
— BERKO Richard 𝕏 ✌️Say No To Ghost Accounts (@BerkoRich) February 18, 2024
Although protesters have expressed concerns about the lack of opportunities for local players in the national team, Paintsil said it’s the prerogative of the coach to invite players, not the FA.
He said, “Every national team coach has a philosophy and they want to do well to improve their CV. It’s not the FA who determines which local player is called; the so-called interference in hearsay, there is no truth in that.”
X, formerly known as Twitter, has settled the compensation for the staff it laid off at its African headquarters over a year after their dismissal, according to their representative agency.
The employees, who were based in Accra, Ghana, were terminated by the social media platform in November 2022, shortly after starting their roles.
They had threatened legal action against X for failing to fulfil their redundancy payment obligations.
While the company has not officially commented on the matter, it had previously claimed to have fully compensated former employees.
Elon Musk, who assumed control of the company in 2022, initiated a significant global workforce reduction, resulting in the dismissal of over 6,000 employees. He cited daily losses exceeding $4 million as a reason for the downsizing.
The African staff, numbering fewer than 20, had recently transitioned to X’s new Accra office after eight months of remote work during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The legal representation agency, Seven Seven, confirmed that they successfully secured redundancy settlements and repatriation expenses for foreign staff, although the exact payout amount was not disclosed.
“They are very pleased to finally be able to get their due, put this behind them and look to the future,” Carla Olympio from Agency Seven Seven told the BBC.
“It’s difficult when it’s the world’s richest man owing you money and closure,” one said.
Initially, the laid-off staff were informed that they would receive an additional month’s salary despite the termination of their contracts. However, they were immediately denied access to their emails and did not receive any further salary payments thereafter.
Since then, the employees have been engaged in a frustrating struggle to obtain compensation. Some of them had relocated from neighboring countries like Nigeria, and their sudden termination left them stranded in Ghana with their families.
In a rare interview last April, Mr. Musk disclosed to the BBC that the social media company had reduced its workforce to 1,500 employees, down from nearly 8,000 at the time of his acquisition.
Following the revelation of Mr. Musk’s significant staff reduction, he tweeted that laid-off employees were provided with three months’ severance pay. However, the Africa-based staff claim they did not receive this compensation.
According to Agency Seven Seven, negotiations between X and the terminated African staff only commenced after the BBC reported on the story.
Last year, X faced a lawsuit filed by former employees in a California court, alleging the company’s failure to fulfil promised severance packages totaling at least $500 million.

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is expected to present his campaign team to the National Executive Committee and National Council of the party today, Monday, February 19, 2024.
The names of members of the campaign team are expected to be announced after this meeting.
According to Citi News sources within the party, the former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dan Botwe, is likely to be named as campaign manager for the 2024 general election.
Mr. Dan Botwe was one of the ministers who were relieved of their posts last week in a reshuffle done by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
It is unclear if the possible campaign manager position has anything to do with the reshuffle by the president.
However, sources close to the NPP flagbearer say the decision was made after broad consultations with the rankand file of the party.
An emerging tidal surge has displaced hundreds of residents in Abutiakope, Aborigines Beach, and nearby communities in Keta, Volta Region.
The surge, which occurred in the early hours of February 15, 2024, on Thursday, caused extensive damage to buildings and personal belongings, including televisions, refrigerators, and cooking utensils, amounting to thousands of Ghana cedis.
During an interview with the media, Mr. Promise Kofi Baccah, the Assembly member of Abutiakope Electoral Area, shared details about the incident.
“Many people have been displaced, properties destroyed, and victims are now stranded,” he stated.
He mentioned that the tidal wave damaged summer hats, coconut trees, and recreational spots along the shores.
Mr. Baccah explained that many displaced residents were staying with relatives since they had nowhere else to go, as rescue assistance from authorities hadn’t arrived yet.
“We no longer need any relief items; what my people want now is the construction of a sea defence wall to protect them from the tidal waves and save lives.”
He stated that several stranded victims lost their sources of livelihood, such as farms, boats, canoes, and nets, to the tidal wave. He called on individuals, philanthropists, individuals, corporate entities, and the government to urgently address the situation to avoid any unforeseen disaster.
This isn’t the first time a tidal wave has ravaged the indigenous people of Keta and its surrounding towns. On November 7, 2021, a devatating wave swept through towns such as Abutiakope, Kedzikope, Keta Central, Agavedzi, and Salakope. The effects of the tidal wave were devastating, as it caused flooding in several inland areas, such as homes, schools, places of worship, and farmlands.
It also displaced at least 3,000 people, including children and women, who lost their belongings and livelihoods. The tidal wave also carried away more than 100 graves from a local cemetery at Agavedzi and uprooted trees from a centuries-old revered forest.
The government and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) responded with relief items and rescue boats to aid the victims. However, the people of Keta have been facing the perennial problem of tidal waves for years, and have been calling for a permanent solution, such as a sea defence project.
Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL) made headlines a few days ago following the alleged sit-down strike that staff had embarked on over unpaid salaries and allowances.
However, the management, in a rebuttal, issued a statement on Friday, February 16, challenging the genuinity of the said industrial action, which is said to have stemmed from unpaid allowances dating as far back as 2019.
“The management of Akosombo Industrial Co. Ltd. wishes to assure the public that there is no strike at the factory.
Management of ATL said the “factory was fully operational, production is ongoing and customers are being served. Management remains committed to addressing labour issues when they arise.”
The statement added that “the company has invested in new machinery, including a biomass boiler and state-of-the-art printing machines, to improve efficiency and meet the demands of the market.”
Renowned Ghanaian reggae dancehall artist Charles Nii Armah Mensah, commonly knownas Shatta Wale, has criticised Despite Media, owned by Osei Kwame Despite, and Hitz FM, a subsidiary of the Multimedia Group, for their role in fostering negative sentiments among some music fans towards him.
During an interview with Jay Forley and his team on 3Music, the outspoken artist expressed his dismay over the persistence of negative perceptions despite collaborations between Hitz FM, Peace FM, and UTV within the media landscape.
Shatta Wale highlighted the disparity between the overwhelming support he receives from fans at his shows and the negativity he encounters on social media platforms.
Despite his considerable fan base and emotional connection with supporters during performances, Shatta Wale lamented the discrepancy in treatment online, which he attributed to the influence of certain media outlets.
Shatta Wale’s comments come amidst a prolonged legal dispute with various media entities and fellow artists, with some asserting that his controversial behaviour contributed to his rise to fame.
Legal expert Martin Kpebu has criticised businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome’s decision to challenge the General Legal Council’s (GLC) ruling to disbar Chief State Attorney Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh.
Kpebu argues that certain behaviours deemed inappropriate within the legal profession could influence court decisions.
The GLC’s notice, dated January 31, 2024, revealed that during a case involving Woyome in 2011, Nerquaye-Tetteh facilitated the direct transfer of GH¢400,000 from Woyome to his wife’s bank account.
The GLC found Nerquaye-Tetteh unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for this transaction. However, Woyome claims the money was a loan he provided to Mrs. Nerquaye-Tetteh for her business.
Speaking on JoyFM’s TopStory on February 16, Mr. Kpebu said, “It is not possible. It is not legally allowed for Mr Woyome to do what he did at the time. It is indefensible, so putting it simply, it is against the ethics of the profession. That is how the General Legal Council found Mr. Nerquaye-Tetteh liable. He needn’t have done so.”
Mr Kpebu’s condemnation of the act follows Mr Woyome’s comments that he has never paid nor will he ever pay a bribe, arguing that the state attorney is being victimised.
But Mr Kpebu insists that, by the standards of the legal profession, this was wrong and no reason is good enough to justify the action.
Again, the legal practitioner added that in this instance, the best response to the matter was to be quiet.
“If it was so genuine, it needn’t have come from Mr. Woyome himself; he could have asked his friends to do that. Not when Mr Nerquarye-Tetteh had something to do with the case. There is no way he can justify it.
Ghanaian veteran actor, Oboy Siki, has urged his embattled colleague, Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, to consider apologising to Martha Ankomah to resolve their dispute instead of pursuing legal action.
Oboy Siki emphasised that LilWin has faced legal challenges before due to his remarks, indicating a need for him to learn from past experiences and seek an amicable resolution.
During an interview with Angle FM, Oboy Siki criticised LilWin for his statements and advised him to extend an apology to Martha Ankomah before the situation escalates further.
“LilWin does not have wise people in his circle because what he said was outrageous. He should follow up on the issue before it’s too late. I don’t care whether he has regretted his actions or not. He should stop fooling and hurriedly go and apologise to Martha Ankomah.
“He’s got into a similar issue before when he was sued and dealt with for messing around with a politician. Even though the case has gone to court, he should be fast and see the woman’s family and render an apology instead of facing her in court,” he advised.
Since LilWin posted a video of NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketiah saying “Any idiot can go to court” on his Instagram page after the news of him being sued became rife, the actor has received backlash for his conduct.
Background
Actress Martha Ankomah has taken legal action against fellow actor LilWin, filing a defamation lawsuit on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
Ankomah alleges that LilWin, without provocation, launched a social media attack against her on February 8, 2024, accusing her of consistently rejecting offers from movie directors to appear in Kumawood films, the Twi-language movie industry.
She contends that LilWin’s statements, among other things, are false and malicious, causing her reputational damage and disfavour among the public.
Martha Ankomah, represented by her lawyer Nii Apatu Plange of Ankoma-Sey, Apatu Plange & Partners, is seeking legal recourse to hold LilWin accountable for defamation and restore her reputation. She has outlined six specific demands to address the matter.
a. Damages in the sum of 5 million Ghana cedis for the defamatory statements made by Defendant.
b. Compensatory damages for the damage done to the reputation of Plaintift.
c. Aggravated damages for the reckless and malicious publication of the defamatory words.
d. An order directing the Defendant to publish an apology and a retraction of the said defamatory words with the same prominence.
e. Injunction restraining the Defendant from further publishing and causing to be published the said or similar words defamatory of Plaintiff.
Leader and founder of the All People’s Congress (APC) and a former presidential candidate for the People’s National Convention (PNC) Hassan Ayariga, has announced that his party is aiming to secure a budget of $100 million in preparation for his candidacy in the 2024 presidential elections.
He made the disclosure during an appearance on TV3’s Hot Issues on February 17, 2024.
Responding to the host’s question on what his budget is, Mr. Ayariga said: “Its a lot; we are looking at $100 million to win the elections.”
According to him, any party that seeks to win an election in 2024 is expected to prepare for nothing short of a ‘whooping’ “$52000 million”.
However, he looks forward to winning “at least 23–25 constituencies in the country.”
The former PNC presidential candidate went on to accuse the giant political duo, i.e., the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), of turning the country into a business centre.
“You know, over the years, the NPP and NDC have turned Ghana into a business centre,” he added
Seychelles’ principal opposition figure, Patrick Herminie, has been relieved of witchcraft allegations as prosecutors opted to dismiss the case against him.
Consistently denying the accusations, Herminie denounced them as “malicious actions” following a court appearance on Thursday.
The charges stemmed from the uncovering of two bodies exhumed from a cemetery on Mahé Island, as stated by the police.
Looking ahead, Mr. Herminie intends to contest the 2025 presidential election representing the United Seychelles Party.
“We do not have the right to arrest someone and put them in prison for nothing at all,” he said.
The president has not commented on the case.
Mr Herminie served as the Speaker of Seychelles’ parliament between 2007 and 2016.
The prosecutor told a magistrates’ court in the capital, Victoria, that he was withdrawing all charges against him.
No reasons were given for the decision.
The president has remained silent on the matter.
Mr. Herminie previously held the position of Speaker in Seychelles’ parliament from 2007 to 2016.
During a session at the magistrates’ court in Victoria, the prosecutor declared the withdrawal of all charges against him.
No explanations were provided for this decision.
Last October, Mr. Herminie and six Seychellois co-accused were released on bail.
They had been accused of possessing items intended for witchcraft use, conspiring to practice witchcraft, and engaging in services related to witchcraft, as reported by local media.
Originally, prosecutors alleged that Mr. Herminie’s name surfaced in a WhatsApp exchange between a Seychellois individual and a Tanzanian suspect apprehended at the main international airport last September.
Seychelles abandons witchcraft case against opposition figure Patrick Herminie
The Tanzanian was found with items allegedly related to witchcraft, including stones, black wooden artefacts, small bottles of brownish liquid, a collection of powders and documents with strange language and “demonic and satanic” symbols, they said.
According to prosecutors, the documents resembled those discovered in vandalized Catholic churches and other locations on Mahé, Seychelles’ largest island.
Apart from Mr. Herminie, four others involved in the initial case are no longer being prosecuted.
As reported by theSeychelles News Agency, a fresh case has been initiated against the Tanzanian individual and two others.
Last year, Mr. Herminie informed local media that over 40 police officers had conducted a raid on his party’s offices in Victoria.
He added that the officers searched for items related to witchcraft, including “bones, body parts, and objects associated with Christianity” but did not find any.
“In Seychelles’ history, there has never been until now, a political party leader arrested for superstition and witchcraft. This is something new and it is shameful for Seychelles,” he was quoted as saying at the time.
Kenya is set to resume avocado exports in two weeks, marking the end of a four-month hiatus imposed by the Agricultural Food Authority (AFA).
The ban, which was instigated by the Horticultural Crops Directorate (HCD) in November last year to ensure the maturity and quality of exported fruit, will be lifted on March 1.
However, exports of Fuerte and Hass avocado varieties by sea will remain restricted to size code 20 (184 grams) until the commencement of the open export window.
Previously, the government had suspended the sea export of Hass, Pinkerton, Fuerte, and Jumbo avocado varieties, opting for air transport for limited quantities to prevent the export of unripe fruit, which had previously damaged Kenya’s reputation in international markets.
The decision to lift the suspension came after avocado field surveys conducted by the AFA between January 7 and 12 to evaluate the maturity and volume of fruit in key production areas across the country.
According to Christine Chesaro, the acting Director-General of AFA, a month ago, the fruit was deemed insufficient, necessitating the extension of restrictions on avocado shipments by sea.
However, recent assessments have indicated that the fruit is now ripe on farms and meets the required volumes.
“All export produce is subject to inspection by AFA-HCD inspectors. Exporters are required to apply for inspection at least three days prior to shipment,” said a memo dated February 14 to all avocado traders.
Exporters must submit a list of their Horticultural Produce Marketing Agents (HPMAs) or suppliers by February 26, according to a directive issued by the Agricultural Food Authority (AFA).
The directive underscores the importance of avocado traders monitoring production and post-production processes to ensure compliance with both regulatory and market standards.
AFA has implemented stringent measures, including penalties, for exporters or their agents found transporting avocados without crates or in open pick-up trucks, which violates the Horticultural Regulations.
Kenya’s avocado exports, primarily consisting of Hass, Fuerte, Pinkerton, and Jumbo varieties, are often referred to as the ‘green gold’ of the future.
Last year, avocado export earnings surpassed Sh20 billion, with the majority of exports destined for Europe and Middle Eastern countries, making it a significant source of foreign exchange for Kenya.
Despite challenges such as smuggling attempts and market price fluctuations, Kenya has emerged as a key player in the global avocado trade, surpassing South Africa in export volume. Additionally, the emergence of local cottage industries specializing in avocado oil extraction has further bolstered the country’s growing avocado industry.
In an exclusive interview with Jay Foley on 3Music, dancehall musician Shatta Wale opened up about the inspiration behind his 2017 hit song “Freedom.” According to Shatta Wale, the song was inspired by hiplife musician Patapaa.
He revealed that after hearing Patapaa’s viral song “One Corner” in 2017, he felt inspired to create something similar.
Shatta Wale credited Patapaa’s unique style and the widespread success of “One Corner” as the driving force behind the creation of his own song, “Freedom.”
“Patapaa’s song went into the Nigerian system naturally. I was just watching to see whether I could follow his trend and it just worked like magic.”
Talking about how he creates his viral songs, the dancehall musician stated that he keeps the fans in mind and analyses how they would react to the song.
Did you know Pataapa was the inspiration behind Shatta Wale’s hit single FREEDOM?
“When I am performing on stage, people look at me and ask why the crowd is charged like that. Spiritually, when I am playing beats, I look at the fans. So I have them in my mind and how I want to see them charge,”he said in the interview.
Ghanaian musician Mercy Onuawonto Sam, also known as Iona Reine, recently recounted how she met her husband, Pastor Okrah, and the conversations that culminated in their marriage.
She disclosed that, initially, she had no intentions of getting married when she crossed paths with Pastor Okrah, who showed a keen interest in her despite her status as a secular artist.
Iona shared that one of her songs, titled “Obra,” deeply resonated with her husband during a challenging period in his life. This connection prompted Pastor Okrah to reach out to her via Facebook, sparking conversations that quickly evolved.
Remarkably, just three days after they began chatting, Pastor Okrah proposed marriage to Iona, signifying the swift progression from their initial interaction to their decision to marry.
“He [Pastor Okrah] got to know me when I released my song titled ‘Obra.’ He used it to encourage himself while he was in a bad situation. He started following me on Facebook and sent me a DM to propose to me.
“When we started chatting, he proposed on the third day, so I prayed about it the next day and got an answer. A few weeks later, we met, and I got to know him better. At that time, I did not have plans for marriage and had decided never to go into one, but it happened,” she shared in a TikTok live session.
Iona Reine’s marriage with Pastor Okrah
Iona Reine and Pastor Okrah celebrated their union in a modest traditional ceremony held at McCarthy Hills on Thursday, January 11, 2024. Iona donned a beautifully crafted burgundy corset outfit adorned with intricate beadwork, exuding elegance and refinement. Her groom complemented her attire by opting for a matching kaftan, completing their coordinated look.
Referring to the occasion as a “ministry wedding,” Iona Reine expressed deep gratitude for the transformative influence of Christ in their lives. She reflected on their journey from their previous lives as individuals associated with a different lifestyle to embracing their new roles as gospel ministers. With sincerity, she sought divine grace to sustain their marriage until death parts them.
This marks Iona Reine’s second marriage, following her previous divorce, and she shares two children with her ex-husband.
President Akufo-Addo made headlines with his ministerial reshuffle on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, just months before the end of his government’s term.
Andrew Egyapa Mercer, the Deputy Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Sekondi, was nominated as the substantive minister for the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture.
During an interview on Empire FM’s Showbiz Today, Arnold Asamoah emphasised that Mark Okraku Mantey’s expertise could have been effectively utilised if he had been elevated to the substantive ministerial role.
“I seriously expected the elevation of Mark Okraku Mantey to that position; no disrespect to Honourable Agyapa Mercer, but if we actually figure out the resume of Mark Okraku Mantey and the backlash he receives as a deputy minister,.
“It is without a doubt that there is little he can do, as he was playing second fiddle to the minister, thus virtually his hands are tied. So the expectation was for the President,in his own wisdom, to elevate Mark to that position to have the room and resources to operate as the substantive minister.”
Ghanaian dancehall artist, Addi Self, who was previously affiliated with the Shatta Movement, opened up about his relationship with his former boss and mentor, Shatta Wale.
During an appearance on the Sunup Show on Shobiz TV, Addi Self expressed feelings of being unappreciated and unloved during his time with the Shatta Movement. Despite parting ways with the group four years ago, he stated that he does not miss being part of the Shatta Movement.
“Sometimes I feel like when we were together, he never did have love for me or something like that because of certain things I see online and stuff like that.
“It’s been four years since I left there. I’ve not seen him. I’m just trying to grow up and focus on my career. Because you got to focus on your own thing,” he said.
Addi Self said that he is happy with himself and does not care about portraying a false image of happiness.
“I don’t regret leaving the Shatta Movement). It’s the same place where I feel like they don’t love me. I just feel happy because God has shown me real people. It’s not about TV, social media, and stuff like that. People see us on TV and feel like these people are all happy and all that. They see videos and things, but you don’t know what’s going on,” he reiterated.
Addi Self said that he is now focusing on his career and his brand.
“So I think this is the time that Addi Self is doing his own thing now.I’m trying to grow my brand and all that,” he said.
Ghanaian musician Charles Nii Armah Mensah, also known as Shatta Wale, believes that the country missed a significant opportunity to elevate its music industry with divine intervention.
He considers his collaboration with global icon Beyoncé a divine chance for the industry to shine internationally. In an interview with 3Music Network, Shatta Wale expressed concern over the undue emphasis placed on certain individuals in the music industry, particularly highlighting Sarkodie.
“When people are talking about Nigeria, I don’t want them to continue because I feel like Ghana got their chance. Let me tell you, the last chance God gave us was Shatta Wale, featuring Beyonce. But you see, we want to watch the coat man; we want somebody like Sarkodie.
He advocates for redirecting attention to those who have the potential to propel Ghanaian music onto the global stage.
“How many people even wish for Sarkodie to do a song with Jay Z? I pray Jay Z will just do it for him before the world comes to an end. That is the wish of all industry players for Sarkodie.
“It is not about behaving like Jay Z, but rather, how real are you to the universe? Are you connecting with yourself? Are you listening to what God is saying? People are not doing that; God gave us that last shot,” he said.
On the Ghanaian music industry going international, the ‘Kakai’ singer submitted: “We want to change the music industry; as you know, we need to go international,” he added.

Capital city of Ghana, Accra, has been designated as Chattanooga’s inaugural sister city in Africa, marking a significant milestone in their diplomatic relations.
This announcement comes as Accra becomes Chattanooga’s seventh sister city with special diplomatic status.
In a symbolic gesture of pride and unity, Ekow Boye-Doe, a 24-year-old cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs, proudly posed with the flag of Ghana after his team’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime during NFL Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas.
Originally hailing from Accra, Boye-Doe’s connection to his homeland adds a poignant touch to the establishment of Accra as Chattanooga’s sister city in Africa.
This development underscores the growing ties between the two cities and the importance of fostering cultural exchange and collaboration across continents.
“Our other sister city relationships have enriched our community, grown our economy and broadened our cultural horizons,” Mayor Tim Kelly said in a news release announcing the relationship Monday. “It’s overdue that we establish one of these connections on the African continent, and I can think of no better partner than Accra.
Many Chattanooga residents have West African roots, and we look forward to robust partnerships and cultural exchange, especially for our youth.”
The partnership between the two cities has been in progress for over a year, according to city officials. However, the timing of the announcement is particularly serendipitous.
Accra’s recent appearance in a Super Bowl commercial for the NFL on Sunday night highlighted the growing popularity of American football worldwide, showcasing thecity’s global reach and influence.
Businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome has challenged the decision of the General Legal Council to disbar Samuel Nerquaye Tetteh over a transfer of GH¢400,000 into his wife’s account, vehemently denying any involvement in bribery allegations.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Friday, Woyome rejected accusations of bribery, asserting that he has never engaged in nor received any bribes throughout his life.
He further underscored his commitment to integrity by revealing that, even in his public service roles, he never accepted fuel coupons.
Woyome, a central figure in the GH¢51 million Waterville judgement debt case, argues that the Council’s actions amount to contempt of court while also acknowledging transferring GH¢400,000 to Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh’s wife, asserting it was solely for humanitarian reasons.
He contends that Nerquaye-Tetteh’s disbarment by the General Legal Council was targeted at him, threatening to take legal action against the regulatory body of the legal profession in Ghana.
The General Legal Council recently removed Samuel Nerquaye Tetteh’s name from the Roll of Lawyers in Ghana following revelations of he received GHC 400,000.00 from Woyome.
This disciplinary action was taken pursuant to legal provisions, as announced in a notice dated January 31st, 2024.
The notice detailed allegations against Nerquaye Tetteh, a Chief State Attorney in the office of the Attorney-General, specifically concerning his involvement in the Alfred Agbesi Woyome vs. Attorney General & Anor case.
The accusation centred on the transfer of GHC 400,000.00 directly from Woyome to the bank account of Nerquaye Tetteh’s wife, Mrs. Gifty Nerquaye Tetteh, without a reasonable explanation, which was deemed to tarnish the dignity and reputation of the legal profession.
Consequently, Nerquaye Tetteh is barred from practicing law, presenting himself as a lawyer, or offering legal services to the public. The revocation of his licence is immediate, as confirmed by a notice signed by Justice Cyra Pamela C.A. Koranteng JA, Judicial Secretary and Secretary to the General Legal Council.
This decision underscores the legal authorities’ commitment to upholding the integrity and ethics of the legal profession, ensuring accountability, and preserving public trust in the legal system.
The 25-year-old is considered a top candidate to bolster the team’s forward line, particularly with the potential departure of Kylian Mbappé next season.
Mbappé has reportedly expressed his desire to leave PSG when his contract expires, although no agreement has been finalised, with Real Madrid being rumoured as a possible destination.
Osimhen, who previously played for Lille in Ligue 1 under the guidance of PSG’s current football advisor Luis Campos, has garnered significant attention after his impressive performance with Napoli, where he scored 26 league goals during their Scudetto-winning campaign last season.
Reports suggest that PSG may need to make a substantial offer of around €150 million to secure Osimhen’s services from Napoli, with his contract running until 2026.
Additionally, PSG is considering alternative options to replace Mbappé, including the possibility of signing multiple forwards. Among the potential targets are Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva.
Salah, aged 31, is nearing the end of his contract with Liverpool, while Silva, aged 29, has previously been linked with PSG.
Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, has issued a cautionary message to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) regarding its quest for a new coach for the Black Stars.
Expressing his views, the Member of Parliament for Suame advised against appointing a well-established coach for the team. “Let’s not go for already-made coaches because they don’t add value to the national team.
The up-and-coming ones can help in building a solid team for the Black Stars. It’s time to dwell on the young ones as it was previously done,” he emphasised during parliamentary proceedings.
Following Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Ivory Coast emerged as champions, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) made the decision to part ways with the former Premier League manager and the entire technical staff.
Now, the GFA is actively seeking a new coach to lead the national team.
Amidst these developments, allegations of interference in player selection within the various national teams have emerged in recent years, drawing scrutiny towards the GFA.
These claims resurfaced during the 2023 AFCON when Richard Ofori, who was inactive, was selected as the first-choice goalkeeper over Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Jojo Wollacott.
As a result, Chris Hughton’s team exited the tournament at the group stage without securing a single victory, ultimately leading to his dismissal from the role.
Chelsea is reportedly preparing a £38.5 million bid to secure the services of West Ham star Mohammed Kudus during the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to reports from Fichajes.net, Arsenal is also interested in acquiring the talented player. Both London clubs are said to be in contention for Kudus, who has impressed during his debut season at the London Stadium.
Despite losing out initially to West Ham in the race for Kudus, Chelsea remains keen on the player and is gearing up to make a bid for him in the summer transfer window.
This potential move could overshadow Arsenal’s interest in securing his signature.
Chelsea’s ability to generate funds through player sales could give them an advantage in the pursuit of Kudus’s services.
West Ham’s Successful Signing of Kudus
West Ham secured a significant signing in Kudus, beating out several European giants for his signature.
The Ghanaian midfielder made the switch from Ajax to West Ham in a deal worth £38 million plus add-ons.
Despite his strong debut season at the London Stadium, Kudus has expressed his desire to compete in the Champions League and vie for trophies consistently in his career.
As a result, the likelihood of him staying at West Ham for the long term seems low, especially with top clubs like Chelsea interested in his talents.
President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has issued a strong warning, cautioning that players might decline selection for the Black Stars if subjected to severe criticism following subpar performances.
The Black Stars received significant backlash following their disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
Speaking to the press during the GFA’s meet-the-press event in Kumasi, Okraku urged fans to refrain from verbally abusing players, highlighting the negative impact such behaviour could have on player morale and their willingness to represent the national team.
“If we excessively criticise our players when things go wrong, we risk losing their commitment and dedication. That’s why I’ve consistently emphasised the need for unwavering support for our players, regardless of the circumstances,” Okraku stated.
He emphasised the importance of trusting the technical team to make critical decisions regarding player selection, citing the expertise and judgement of the coaching staff.
Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 AFCON saw them finish third in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.
Despite efforts to turn the tournament around, the Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde and consecutive 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, resulting in their early elimination.
This marked the second consecutive tournament in which Ghana failed to advance beyond the group stage, extending the nation’s AFCON title drought to 42 years.
Okraku’s plea underscores the necessity of creating a supportive environment to nurture player development and success, urging fans to stand behind the team through bothtriumphs and challenges.
Kenya’s former world record holder, Henry Rono, passed away at the age of 72 after a brief illness, Athletics Kenya confirmed on Thursday morning in Nairobi.
Rono etched his name in history during a remarkable feat in 1978 when he shattered four world records within a span of 81 days, setting new benchmarks in the 3000m, 5000m, 10,000m, and 3000m steeplechase disciplines.
Notably, he also surpassed his own record in the 5000m in 1981.
After relocating to the United States in 1986, Rono resided there for more than three decades before returning to Kenya in 2019.
This news arrives amidst ongoing mourning for Kelvin Kiptum, the marathon world record holder, who tragically lost his life in a road accident last Sunday, further adding to Kenya’s and the world’s somber sentiments.
Juventus Academy Ghanahas bolstered its coaching team with the appointment of Joyce Annor Yeboah, also known as Afia Empress, marking a significant milestone as she becomes the first Ghanaian female tactician to join the academy’s staff since its inception in October 2023.

While Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol are confirmed absentees, Bernardo Silva’s availability hinges on a late fitness assessment.
Grealish, who sustained a foot injury during the FC Copenhagen match, will miss out, while Silva’s status remains uncertain after he was substituted in the second half due to a knock.
On a positive note, Guardiola mentioned the return of Mateo Kovacic and Sergio Gomez to training. However, Gvardiol is deemed unfit to participate in the upcoming fixture.
He told reporters on Friday: “Jack [Grealish], I think, will not be ready. I don’t know [his condition]. I need to speak with the doctors. I only know he is not able to play tomorrow. Bernardo [Silva], we will assess today in the afternoon training session. [Mateo] Kova [Kovacic] is training and Sergio [Gomez] is as well. The rest we will see.”
On Tuesday, following City’s 3-1 Champions League win over Copenhagen, Guardiola added that Gvardiol would be out for “two or three weeks” with an ankle ligament issue.
Silva has emerged as a pivotal figure for City, showcasing his importance with eight goals and four assists across all competitions this season. His potential absence would undoubtedly pose a significant setback for the team.
However, the return of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne from injury provides a boost. Moreover, Guardiola’s side has demonstrated resilience in managing without key players in the past.
Should Silva be unable to feature against Chelsea, Guardiola’s City will aim for his return in subsequent fixtures. They will look to have him back for the home match against Brentford on Tuesday or possibly for the away encounter with Bournemouth on February 24th.

Although he is reported to be in stable condition, Hodgson is currently undergoing tests.
As a result of Hodgson’s health scare, Palace opted to cancel their scheduled pre-match press conference, which was slated to occur before their upcoming Premier League fixture against Everton on Monday night.
A short statement from the Eagles at the time read: “Unfortunately, today’s press conference will no longer take place as scheduled as Roy Hodgson was taken ill during this morning’s training session.”
The club later clarified that 76-year-old Hodgson had been taken to the hospital.
“Following news that Roy Hodgson was taken ill during today’s training session, we can confirm that he is now stable and is currently undergoing tests in the hospital. Everybody at the club sends their best wishes to Roy for a speedy recovery,” a second Palace statement explained.
Roy Hodgson, a native of Croydon, initiated his football journey in the youth ranks of Crystal Palace in the early 1960s.
Following an illustrious 41-year managerial career that spanned various clubs across the globe, Hodgson fulfilled a lifelong dream by assuming the managerial reins of his boyhood team in 2017.
He remained at Selhurst Park until his departure in the summer of 2021.
The former England boss was expected to retire at that time, although while admitting that he was “stepping away from football for a while,” he refused to confirm it would be for good.
Following his departure from Crystal Palace, Roy Hodgson briefly filled a short-term role at Watford less than a year later. However, he was subsequently recruited by Palace in March 2023 to replace Patrick Vieira.
As speculation regarding his job security intensified due to recent poor results, Hodgson’s return to Palace garnered attention and scrutiny.
Jose Mourinho has come to the defence of Lionel Messi’s 2010 Ballon d’Or win, countering claims made by his former player Wesley Sneijder, who deemed the decision “unfair.”
Sneijder, a former Dutch international, expressed his disappointment at not receiving the individual accolade in 2010, despite playing a pivotal role in Mourinho’s Inter Milan’s triumphant campaign in the Champions League, Coppa Italia, and Serie A.
Despite Messi’s achievements being limited to winning La Liga and experiencing Argentina’s World Cup quarter-final exit that year, Mourinho, the former Roma manager, has sided with Inter Miami’s Sneijder, offering support for his perspective.
On Rio Ferdinand’s Vibe with Five podcast, the Portuguese said, “I don’t like to say it robbed. Who won it? Messi? So, not robbed. But Wesley did the treble, the Champions League winner, and I think the World Cup final in the same season. So Wesley should be there at least in the top 3, but when in the last generation, when Cristiano [Ronaldo] and Messi win the Ballon d’Or, it’s never robbed.”
While there have been debates surrounding some of Lionel Messi’s Ballon d’Or victories, notably the 2023 award, where he scored fewer goals than Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain and Erling Haaland of Manchester City and played in the MLS, widely considered a weaker league, the 36-year-old’s legacy as one of the greatest players in history is unquestionable. His impact transcends individual accolades
Messi’s Miami team kicks off their 2024 MLS campaign with a home match against Real Salt Lake on February 22, followed by an away fixture against the LA Galaxy.
In contrast, Wesley Sneijder, his former teammate, retired from professional football in 2019.
Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he has curtailed his visits to Africa due to the overwhelming attention and excitement that typically accompany his presence on the continent.
The 61-year-old, known for his influential role in nurturing the careers of African players and guiding them to success, has developed a strong bond with the African community.
Speaking in an interview with Vibe with Five, Mourinho disclosed that while he appreciates the immense love and admiration he receives from Africans, it often limits his ability to move freely, prompting him to limit his visits to the continent.
“Yes, I cannot go to Africa. I have Didier, Geremi, Eto’o, Kalou, Obi Mikel, Essien and Sulley Muntari. I have guys all around the world. Every time I go to Africa I cannot walk. The guys, they love me. Even in Europe, many of the African guys love me,” he said.
Jose, who holds African players in high regard, mentioned that African players are ‘loyal and pure’.
“And to be honest, I love the guys and I feel that the African player is very loyal and very pure.”
Jose Mourinho has garnered enduring admiration from Africans for his role in elevating numerous African players to superstar status through his coaching prowess.
Renowned for his discerning eye for talent, Mourinho distinguished himself by recognising the unique abilities of African players and actively seeking to sign and develop them into top-class footballers.
Notable players on Mourinho’s roster of accomplished African players are Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Samuel Eto’o, and Salomon Kalou.
However, the arrival was delayed due to a misunderstanding between Dwamena’s wife and family. The body was placed in a brown coffin draped in the Ghanaian flag.
The arrival of Dwamena’s body marked the beginning of the burial and funeral proceedings, which had been postponed due to disagreements among his wife, mother, and father.
According to reports from Onua FM, a sister of the former FC Zurich striker stated that the family intends to hold the funeral on a different date than originally announced. This change is attributed to disagreements regarding certain pre-burial rituals, particularly the choice of shroud for the body.
It is understood that Dwamena’s wife insisted on using her preferred shroud, while the family insisted on purchasing the final clothes for their departed relative, resulting in the ongoing dispute.
Following the arrival, the body has been placed in state for viewing.
The Ghanaian striker tragically passed away after suffering a heart seizure on the pitch during Egnatia Rrogozhine’s match against Partizani Tirana on November 11, 2023.
Dwamena was experiencing a remarkable season, reminiscent of his successful stint with FC Zurich from 2017 to 2018, during which he scored 21 goals in 51 games. Prior to his untimely demise, he had scored 12 goals and provided one assist in 12 games during the 2023–2024 season.
He joined Egnatia in January 2023 on an initial one-and-a-half-year contract, during which he showcased his prowess by scoring 12 goals and providing 9 assists in 24games within the first six months at the club.
Mensah, who arrived at the club as a free agent following his departure from the San Jose Earthquakes, expressed his enthusiasm for the new chapter in New England.
The MLS Cup champion and former MLS Best XI honoree has signed a one-year contract with the Revolution for the 2024 MLS season, with an additional one-year option for 2025.
With seven seasons of MLS experience under his belt, including a notable six-year spell with the Columbus Crew from 2017 to 2022, Mensah brings valuable expertise to his new team.
During his time with the Crew, Mensah played a pivotal role in securing the 2020 MLS Cup title under the leadership of New England’s head coach, Caleb Porter. He notably featured in every minute of both the regular season and playoffs, earning recognition in the MLS Best XI.
Following his success with the Columbus Crew, Mensah continued to excel in the MLS, achieving milestones with both the Crew and the San Jose Earthquakes.
In 2021, Mensah played a pivotal role in securing the Campeones Cup for the Crew before achieving a personal career high with 30 starts during the 2022 season.
Transitioning to the San Jose Earthquakes ahead of the 2023 campaign, the 33-year-old made significant contributions, including 26 appearances and 21 starts, aiding the team’s postseason qualification.
Throughout his tenure with the Crew, Mensah showcased exceptional leadership qualities, earning the title of Defender of the Year for three consecutive years from 2018 to 2020.
His impact extended beyond the field, as he was also recognised as the club’s Humanitarian of the Year in 2017 for his philanthropic efforts through the Jonathan Mensah Foundation.
Mensah’s professional journey began in his native Ghana with Ashanti Gold, where he made his debut as a teenager during the 2007–08 season. He subsequently ventured abroad, representing clubs such as Free State Stars in South Africa, Udinese in Italy, Evian in France, and Anzhi Makhachkala in the Russian Premier League, before making his mark in the MLS.
During his time with Evian in France’s Ligue 1 from 2011 to 2015, Mensah accumulated 44 appearances, showcasing his talent in one of Europe’s top leagues. Additionally, he gained valuable experience on loan with Granada in Spain’s Segunda División, featuring in 15 matches between 2009 and 2011.
On the international stage, Mensah has made significant contributions to the Ghana Men’s National Team, earning 70 caps. He has represented Ghana in two FIFA World Cups, notably aiding the Black Stars in reaching the quarterfinals in South Africa in 2010 and making three appearances during the group stage in Brazil in 2014.
Mensah’s international journey began at the Under-20 level, where he played a pivotal role in Ghana’s success at the 2009 African Youth Championship and the subsequent FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Following Mali’s defeat in the AFCON 2023 quarter-final match against Ivory Coast, coach Sekou Chelle disclosed experiencing dizziness and a spike in blood pressure.
A viral video depicted water being poured over Chelle’s head, prompting clarification from the coach regarding the circumstances.
Mali had held control of the game with a numerical advantage and secured a lead through Nene Dorgeles’ goal in the second half.
However, Ivory Coast mounted a comeback, equalising in the 90th minute with Simon Adingra’s goal and sealing their victory with Diakite’s header in extra time.

Chelle, visibly distressed at the match’s conclusion, attributed his distress to his health issues, shedding light on his condition post-match.
“After the Elephants’ second goal, I started to feel dizzy, my blood pressure was rising,” he said. “Thankfully, my compatriot poured enough water on my head to stabilise my blood pressure.”
Despite their disappointment at falling short of winning the tournament, Malians remain proud of their team’s accomplishments, including topping their group and overcoming Burkina Faso in the round of 16.
Looking ahead, coach Chelle will undoubtedly strive to build upon this performance when the AFCON returns to Morocco next year.
The funeral of the late Ghanaian footballer Raphael Dwamena has been marred by a confrontation between his paternal and maternal families, disrupting the solemn occasion.
Held at the Adjiringanor AstroTurf in Accra, the service was intended as a moment for friends, family, and fans to honour Dwamena’s memory.
However, tension and uncertainty now grip mourners as a standoff unfolds between the two sides, overshadowing the proceedings.
Dwamena’s untimely passing has left a void in the football community, and the funeral was meant to provide closure and tribute.
Efforts to resolve the conflict are currently in progress, with mediators working to facilitate a peaceful resolution between the warring factions.
While the specific details of the disagreement remain unclear, sources suggest it revolves around differing opinions on the funeral arrangements.
While the dispute continues, mourners have gathered outside the venue, awaiting news of the resolution.
In November 2023,Raphael Dwamena tragically passed away during a match between KF Egnatia and KF Partizani in the Albanian top flight, sending shockwaves throughout the football world, especially in his homeland of Ghana.
The 28-year-old had been battling a heart condition since 2017 and had been playing with a heart monitor.
Despite these challenges, he continued to excel in his career, emerging as the top scorer in the Albanian league before his untimely demise.
Dwamena’s career was marked by stints at prominent clubs such as Levante, FC Zurich, and Real Zaragoza. He made his debut for the Ghanaian national team in 2017, scoring in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia.
Throughout his professional career, he participated in 200 matches, scoring 98 goals and providing 42 assists.
A UEFA report on football clubs’ finances released on Thursday, shows that the Manchester United squad in the previous financial year has been recorded as the most expensive ever.
Despite finishing third in the Premier League and securing the Carabao Cup under manager Erik ten Hag’s leadership in his debut season, the squad amassed a total cost of €1.422 billion ($1.543 billion), as stated by UEFA.
Notable signings contributing to this record-breaking expenditure include Antony (€95 million), Harry Maguire (€93 million), Jadon Sancho (€85 million), and Casemiro (€82 million).
UEFA’s European Club Finance and Investment Landscape report read: “Manchester United FC’s squad at the end of the club’s 2023 financial year (i.e. before the summer 2023 transfer window) is officially the most expensive ever assembled, with a combined transfer cost of €1,422m. They have surpassed the Real Madrid squad of 2020, which cost €1,332m.”
The data encompassed all of Europe’s major clubs, excluding Chelsea, Everton, and Leicester City, as their financial information for 2023 had not been disclosed.
Consequently, the expenditure of approximately €993 million by Chelsea from the summer of that year until August 2023 was not factored into the analysis.
Additionally, the report highlighted a concerning trend involving over 300 clubs affiliated with ownership groups comprising multiple teams, largely influenced by American investors.
This development poses a potential threat to the integrity of European football matches.
UEFA detailed the growing popularity of “multi-club ownership”—with investors, if not always the fans — in its annual analysis of the European football economy, which it predicts will be worth about €26bn in revenue for clubs in 2023.
Multi-club groups led to an “increased risk of seeing two clubs with the same owner or investor facing each other in the same competition, creating potential integrity risks at the European level,” UEFA director of research Andrea Traverso acknowledged in the 118-page report.
The report was published while two teams among 13 in the Abu Dhabi-backed City Football Group network—City and Girona — are second, respectively, in the Premier League and LaLiga standings and in shape to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
On Thursday, Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez declared that Inter Miami will mark the final club of his career.
The 37-year-old joined the MLS side for the 2024 season following his tenure with Brazilian club Gremio.
Suárez’s move to Inter Miami reunited him with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, with whom he celebrated four LaLiga titles during their time in Spain.
“Inter Miami will be my last club; my family already knows that. I don’t have a date yet, but it’s the last step,” Suárez said in an interview with Uruguayan radio station Del Sol.
“I’m ready for this last challenge, but there is an inevitable fatigue and, in the end, I want to have quality of life in the future,” he added.
Having previously represented clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam, Liverpool, and Atlético Madrid, Suárez boasts an impressive career spanning multiple prestigious teams. Since 2007, he has earned 138 caps for Uruguay.
Inter Miami, scheduled to face Newell’s Old Boys in its last preseason fixture on Thursday, will commence its MLS campaign against Real Salt Lake on Feb. 21.
Kylian Mbappé has informed Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) of his intention to depart from the club once his contract expires this summer, sources have disclosed to ESPN, signalling a potential move to Real Madrid.
Reports from ESPN on February 3 revealed Mbappé’s decision to make the switch to Madrid this summer, finally putting an end to the Spanish club’s prolonged pursuit of the French international.
However, he had not yet communicated his decision to either club at that time.
Sources within Madrid maintain that Mbappé has yet to respond to the offer reported by ESPN several weeks ago.
Nevertheless, they remain hopeful that Mbappé will provide a response soon, as they believe they have exhausted all efforts to persuade him to join their ranks.
Mbappé, whose admiration for Bernabéu icons Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo runs deep, has long harboured a desire to don the colours of Madrid.
According to a source, he believes that the timing is right in his career to make the move to the Spanish capital.
According to sources briefed by ESPN, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) had devised two potential scenarios for their future strategy: one with Kylian Mbappé remaining at the club, and another without him. With Mbappé now vocalising his decision to leave, the latter scenario is materialising.
Prior to PSG’s 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the Champions League, where Mbappé netted the opening goal, head coach Luis Enrique remarked on Tuesday that the forward appeared unfazeddespite his impending departure, maintaining his usual demeanour.
Jose Mourinho and Michael Essien share a close bond akin to a father-and-son relationship, with Essien attributing much of his success to Mourinho.
Essien rose to prominence and endeared himself to Chelsea fans during the 2005–2006 Premier League season, where his pivotal role contributed significantly to the club’s triumph.
Mourinho played a key role in assembling a formidable squad at Chelsea, which included African talents like Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, and John Obi-Mikel, alongside Essien.
However, it’s noteworthy that Essien stands out as the only player among them to have played under Mourinho at both Chelsea and Real Madrid, underscoring the special connection between them.
He said, albeit playfully, that, he sometimes had to stop Essien from referring to him as ‘daddy’ due to the closeness of their age gap. “Every time I go to Africa, I cannot walk. The guys, they love me. Even in Europe, many of the African guys love me. And to be honest, I love the guys and I feel that the African player is very loyal and very pure.
Many of them call me Daddy, and some of them are almost my age. When Essein calls me daddy, I say, ‘Come on, Michael, don’t call me daddy; you are almost my age,” he said.
Michael Essien attributes much of his success to Jose Mourinho, with whom he shares a father-and-son-like relationship. Essien’s rise to fame and adoration among Chelsea fans coincided with his pivotal role in the club’s 2005–2006 Premier League triumph.
Signed by Mourinho, Essien was part of a cohort of talented African players at Chelsea, including Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, and John Obi-Mikel, all of whom significantly contributed to the manager’s success.
Notably, Essien stands out as the only player among them to have played under Mourinho at both Chelsea and Real Madrid, highlighting the unique bond between them.
Saddick Adams has addressed the cordial images capturing his encounter with Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif in the parliament lobby on February 14, 2024.
Adams, alongside other prominent sports journalists, spearheaded the ‘Save Ghana Football’ protest, rallying hundreds to march through the streets of Accra to protest against the mismanagement of football in the country.
Their protest included a stop at Parliament, where they presented a petition and observed deliberations on the state of Ghanaian football by lawmakers.
A video surfaced showing Saddick, Patrick Osei Agyemang (also known as Songo), and Dan Kweku Yeboah exchanging pleasantries with the sports minister, including handshakes and hugs, which quickly gained traction online.
Critics argued that the video contradicted the anger and concerns expressed during the protest, but Adams addressed these criticisms in a post on X, providing a detailed explanation of the events that unfolded at Parliament.
The accusatory post against him by a user by the name of @natioonn read: “Dear Saddick, I’m your biggest fan and I support everything you’ve said about the state of Ghana football, but after watching the video of you and Country Man Zongo when you met the Sports Minister, I’m convinced that nobody is actually angry in this country. We are all hungry and need our share of the national cake.”

Massa, We protested against an institution and its leader. The first point of our petition is asking for this person’s ministry to be investigated for financial infractions we have observed.
Parliament receives this petition in his presence and instantly commissions the House to begin the investigation.
We leave the chamber and the minister excuses the house to exchange short pleasantries with us and thank us for taking the bold initiative to help fix the game. We also express our appreciation that he came to meet us.
So to you, it is at the parliament lobby that we should have grabbed him by the throat or scowled like mad dogs just to show that we are angry?
We are sports journalists meeting a sports minister after protesting against his tenure. A man we have shared meetings with and exchanged ideas with privately as brothers.
Is our courage as journalists rather not to be seen in us doing what we did and still exchanging pleasantries like civilised human beings?
I’m not trained to behave in an uncivilised manner towards all manner of people.
Head coach of Nsoatreman Football Club, Maxwell Konadu, has emerged as a potential candidate to join the coaching staff of the new Black Stars head coach.
Following the dismissal of coach Chris Hughton last month due to the Black Stars’ failure to progress in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is actively seeking a replacement.
Sources have indicated that Konadu, who previously served as an assistant coach for the Black Stars from 2014 to 2019, may be appointed as a deputy to the incoming head coach.
A five-member committee, tasked by the Ghana FA to identify a suitable candidate, is set to present their findings to the Executive Council by the end of this week. It is anticipated that the new head coach will be announced to the public before the end of February.
While several reports suggest that former Black Stars coach Otto Addo is the frontrunner for the position, Konadu’s potential involvement adds intrigue to the selection process.
According to reports, Shaban suffered a fall during a training session, resulting in a head injury. He was swiftly taken to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Regrettably, despite efforts made while under intensive care, Shaban succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Iddrisu Shaban made his final appearance for Vision FC in their victory against Tamale Dreams FC on February 10th, during which he contributed an assist.
Former Central RegionalChairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and media commentator Allotey Jacobs has likened the ‘endless criticisms’ and hostility towards the Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bawumia, to those of Jesus Christ, where his message was downplayed and discredited.
“But they will say all manner of things, but that is how it is anyway. The Pharisees were against Jesus Christ.
Pharisees and Sadducees were two groups of Jewish religious leaders who often opposed and challenged Jesus Christ and his message. They treated him with hostility, scepticism, and contempt.
During an appearance on Peace FM’s morning show, Kokrooko, with Kwame Sefa Kayi, the NDC outcast, bemoaned the opposition’s attacks on Dr Bawumia, highlighting the disdain with which the NDC treats the “message” of the vice president and not the substance of it.
“Anytime Bawumia talks, almost 10,000 people will talk at a time, and everyone will want to comment on his remarks. Instead of engaging with the substance of his message, it seems like thousands are eager to simply criticise or insult him.
They don’t regard the message he has for them, the substance of his presentation but rather they will insult him as compared to their own,” he said.
The NDC is quick to launch personal attacks on the vice president. He also highlighted “how the NDC takes pride in competing among themselves on who can launch the most scathing attacks against him.”
Stemming from the current economic hardships Ghanaians are currently facing, Mr Allotey, in his defence, noted that the world is leaving in biblical times, hence the need for a saviour who is none other than Dr Bawumia.
“We are in biblical times, in times of difficulty where nations are in crisis. And in such times , we need a saviour in Ghana now, is Dr Bawumia,” he said.
