  • Ghanaians embrace Otto Addo’s reinstatement as head coach of Black Stars

Following reports indicating that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is considering reappointing Otto Addo as the new head coach of the Black Stars, the majority of Ghanaians seem highly supportive of this potential decision.

The Ghana senior men’s national team currently finds itself without a permanent coach following the recent departure of Chris Hughton, in the aftermath of the team’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

In response, the GFA has formed a committee tasked with finding a suitable replacement, with specific criteria outlined for the search process.

However, speculation suggests that Otto Addo is emerging as the frontrunner for the position, with discussions reportedly underway between Addo and the GFA.

This prospective appointment is gaining favour among Ghanaian football enthusiasts, who appear to endorse the choice, while the GFA is reportedly inclined to offer Addo a long-term contract.

Otto Addo previously served as head coach in early 2022, stepping in after Milovan Rajevac, and notably guided Ghana to victory over Nigeria in the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Despite a mixed performance at the tournament itself, Addo’s track record and familiarity with the team are seen as assets for the role.

After the World Cup, he returned to his coaching duties at German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund.

Ghanaian football icon, Michael Essien, has journeyed to Ivory Coast to visit Brighton & Hove Albion forward Simon Adingra.

At just 22 years old, Adingra was a vital part of the Ivory Coast squad during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

In the final match held in Abidjan, he played a pivotal role, contributing two assists as the Elephants triumphed over the Super Eagles of Nigeria with a 2-1 victory.

Expressing his delight for Adingra’s success, Michael Essien made the journey to Bondoukou, the winger’s hometown, to celebrate alongside him and his family.

Following Ivory Coast’s triumph at the 2023 AFCON, Essien was among the first to extend his congratulations to Adingra in a post on X.

Their connection dates back to their time together at the Right to Dream Academy and FC Nordsjaelland, where Essien witnessed Adingra’s talent firsthand.

  • Kufour was ‘forced’ to speak at Bawumia’s program at UPSA – Adakabre claims

Kufour was ‘forced’ to speak at Bawumia’s program at UPSA – Adakabre claims

Lawyer Adakabre Frimpong Manso has made assertions suggesting that former President John Agyekum Kufour was unexpectedly called upon to speak at Vice President Dr. Mahama Bawumia’s lecture on February 7, 2024, at the UPSA auditorium.

Adakabre, who hosts Neat FM’s morning show, claimed that President Kufour had not been originally scheduled to address the audience and had plans to travel to Kumasi for the celebration of the 150 years of the Sagrenti War.

However, Vice President Bawumia personally approached him to attend the lecture.

According to Adakabre, who was once a running mate of the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, Kufour was essentially pressured into attending and speaking at the event.

On his show on February 15, 2024, Adakabre cautioned against using Kufour’s presence at the lecture as a basis for making political judgements.

“The former president was due to travel the next day, but Dr. Bawumia gave him that necessary respect and visited him to plead for his presence at the program. It is not surprising that, because he loves Bawumia, he went there. But the mistake they made was that someone who was not billed to speak was forced to do so.

“So, he was surprised when they asked him to speak, and he said what he wanted to say. So, his position was that of him and not NPP,” he said.

Adakabre emphasised that Kufour’s participation should not be linked to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), especially as Vice President Bawumia serves as the party’s flagbearer.

“The JA Kufour Cup should not necessarily be affiliated with Bawumia and people should not use his attendance as a special guest of honour to not attend,” he added.

The J.A. Kufuor Cup will take place between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, February 18, 2024.

This match is organised to commemorate the remarkable legacy of former President J.A. Kufuor and serve as the pinnacle of celebrations for his 85th birthday.

New finance minister announces faceless assessment system for robust revenue mobilisation

Newly appointed Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has pledged to facilitate the implementation of a faceless assessment system by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

He emphasised that this anonymous evaluation procedure will bolster the efficiency of revenue collection, thereby fortifying the nation’s financial standing and facilitating the attainment of its expenditure objectives.

Speaking in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, Adam Amin said, “We have heard that people are being harassed. All these are going to be streamlined so that you have a friendly approach and we will also get the GRA to introduce a faceless assessment system to ensure that we maximise revenue collection…and to be able to meet our expenditure target.”

Amin Adam also vowed to ‘aggressively’ pursue revenue collection by taking the initial step to visit various market areas and revenue centres to motivate GRA personnel further to keep up their revenue collection efforts.

“Revenue collection will be pursued aggressively, So you are going to see me moving around the revenue centres, the ports, the airport and the market areas to encourage the staff of GRA to collect more revenue but also to institute a friendly approach to collecting revenue,” he noted.
Following a reshuffle by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on February 14, 2024, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam assumed the role of Finance Minister.

He has committed to adhering to the government’s policies and initiatives as delineated in the 2024 budget.

AFCON 2023: ‘Finally’ Sports Minister blasts Black Stars for unacceptable display

Ghana’s Minister of Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has voiced his discontent over the recent underwhelming performances of the Black Stars in major football competitions.

The four-time Africa Champions have failed to impress in the past three tournaments, facing elimination during the group stages. These tournaments include two AFCONs and a FIFA World Cup.

Prior to their disappointing outing at AFCON 2023, the Black Stars were prematurely ousted from the group stage at AFCON 2021 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

In an address to Parliament, Mustapha Ussif underscored the unacceptable nature of the Black Stars’ performances in these tournaments, particularly given the substantial investments made by the government in the team.

“The Black Stars’ performance in the last three major tournaments, namely the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire, where Ghana exited at the group stages of all three tournaments, notwithstanding government’s continuous huge investment in the team, is not acceptable,” he stated.

At the 2023 AFCON tournament, where Ivory Coast emerged as winners, the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage, finishing third in Group B with two points. They managed two draws and suffered one defeat.

  • Peace FM’s Nana Yaw Kesseh blasts GFA chief for undermining impact of ‘Save Ghana Football’ demo

Peace FM’s Nana Yaw Kesseh blasts GFA chief for undermining impact of ‘Save Ghana Football’ demo

Nana Yaw Kesseh, one of the organisers of the ‘Save Ghana Football’ protest, has strongly responded to what he perceives as an attempt by Nana Oduro Sarfo, an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association, to undermine the significance of the protest held on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.

Allegedly, Oduro Sarfo claimed that the demonstration failed to meet his expectations due to a low turnout. He reportedly tried to incite anger among the protestors by unexpectedly appearing at the gathering point of the march, the Black Stars Square.

In his rebuttal on Kessben FM, Nana Yaw Kesseh criticised Oduro Sarfo for trying to deflect attention from the key issues raised by the protestors. He dismissed the notion of a low turnout, revealing that the protest saw over 3000 participants.

Furthermore, Nana Yaw Sarfo disclosed that the protest leaders had the opportunity to meet with parliamentary leaders following the submission of their petition.

“Does he know what a poorly organised demonstration is? This demonstration attracted over 3000 people. We went from Circle to the Black Stars Square and there was not a single report of someone misconducting himself.

“Demonstrations are not even about the crowd but if that is his worry, then we are telling him that we had the crowd. We are talking about the lives of the people of Ghana. It is a serious matter and we must treat it accordingly. No one pelted anyone with stones or sachet water, “ he said.

The protest garnered significant support from Ghanaian football fans, with thousands turning out to advocate for substantial reforms and a complete overhaul of the Ghanaian football structure.

Protesters are urging swift intervention from authorities, citing concerns that numerous Ghanaian football talents are being squandered due to inadequate management and perceived corruption within the system.

Following their march, which began at the Obra Spot, demonstration leaders formally submitted a petition to key entities, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Parliament, and the Ghana Football Association.

Pick-pockets purloined Alhaji Gruzah’s money at ‘Save Ghana Football’ demonstration – Report

Alhaji Abdul Karim Gruzah, a seasoned football administrator, was a victim of theft during the ‘Save Ghana Football’ demonstration held on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, according to reports.

This unfortunate incident was brought to light by renowned broadcaster Dan Kwaku Yeboah during the February 15, 2024, edition of Peace FM’s Kokrokoo program.

According to Yeboah, he became aware of the theft after speaking with Alhaji Gruzah following the demonstration, which reportedly saw the participation of over 3000 individuals.

Both Kwaku Yeboah and Kwami Sefa Kayi commended Alhaji Gruzah, the organisers, and the numerous Ghanaians who attended the demonstration.

“Alhaji Gruzah came clad in all-white while we were in black. His reason was that while we were frustrated, he was happy with our decision to register our frustrations and call the authorities to order.

I was having a conversation with him after the demonstration, and he told me someone had stolen his money. While the young men were praising him, some dipped their hands into his pocket and picked up the money,” Kwaku Yeboah said.

Kwaku Yeboah expressed admiration for the organisers of the demonstration, hailing it as a groundbreaking event in the sports industry.

He noted that history will likely remember them as the first Ghanaians to orchestrate such a large-scale protest concerning sports matters.

The demonstration attracted thousands of football enthusiasts who demanded extensive reforms and a restructuring of Ghana’s football system.

Protesters called for urgent action from authorities, citing concerns about the mismanagement and perceived corruption within the system, which they believe is causing talented Ghanaian footballers to languish.

Following their march from Obra Spot, the demonstration leaders submitted a petition to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Parliament, and the Ghana Football Association.

  • Jude Bellingham-Greenwood feud appears to evoke ‘unwritten law’ in LaLiga

Jude Bellingham-Greenwood feud appears to evoke ‘unwritten law’ in LaLiga

Jude Bellingham and Mason Greenwood have stirred up an unexpected controversy in La Liga, as Getafe challenges Real Madrid over an incident deemed to breach an unwritten code.

During a Spanish top-flight match on February 1, Real Madrid’s Bellingham and Greenwood, both England internationals, engaged in a fierce duel.

After a particularly intense challenge, Bellingham was captured on camera mouthing something towards his fellow countryman.

Getafe promptly reported the incident to La Liga, urging it to be documented in the match referee’s report.

Lip-readers have since been enlisted to decipher Bellingham’s words amid speculation about whether he uttered “rapist” or “rubbish,” potentially leading to a four-match suspension for the 20-year-old.

According to Marca, Bellingham will not learn his fate until March, sparking curiosity and debate in Spain.

There exists an unwritten agreement in La Liga where clubs tacitly agree not to pursue actions on incidents unnoticed by match officials; what happens on the field stays on the field.

Greenwood, currently on loan at Getafe from Manchester United, is reportedly eager to put the matter behind them.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is reportedly taken aback by Getafe’s deviation from this tradition, opening up a disciplinary process rarely explored.

The Spanish FA will now determine if further action is warranted, as clubs across La Liga closely monitor the situation.

VIDEO: Memphis Depay gifts diamond-encrusted NBA-esque ring to Antoine Griezmann

Antoine Griezmann has achieved a significant milestone by becoming Atletico Madrid’s all-time leading goal scorer and in recognition of this achievement, his teammate Memphis Depay has gifted him a diamond-encrusted ring reminiscent of those awarded to NBA and Super Bowl champions.

    Crusted diamond ring

Griezmann, who clinched World Cup glory with France in 2018, surpassed the record previously held by Atletico Madrid legend Luis Aragones in January, scoring his 174th goal for the club.

To commemorate this feat, Depay presented him with a special ring adorned with diamonds and featuring his iconic No. 7, Griezmann’s preferred squad number.

    Griezman with ring from Memphis

The ring comes in a unique case with a small screen displaying highlights from Griezmann’s time at Atletico Madrid.

Depay, who briefly shared the pitch with Griezmann during their time together at Barcelona, went the extra mile to give his close friend a lasting keepsake.

Knowing Griezmann’s admiration for American sports like basketball and the NFL, Depay ensured that the ring resembled those awarded to champions of the Super Bowl and NBA Finals.

    WHAT GRIEZMANN & DEPAY SAID

Depay said to Griezmann when handing over his special gift on Valentine’s Day: “You deserve it. I know how much it means to you. This club, the fans, the city. Plus, I know how much you love the NBA!” Griezmann responded by saying: “I’m going to cry!”

Griezmann will aim to increase his goal tally when Atletico Madrid takes on Las Palmas in La Liga on February 17. However, his contributions are unlikely to significantly impact their quest for the league title, as Atletico currently sits fourth in the standings, trailing league leader Real Madrid by 13 points.

Despite this gap, Atletico remains in contention for silverware in other competitions.

They have a Champions League last-16 clash against Inter Milan ahead, and are also in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, providing opportunities for further success under Diego Simeone’s guidance.

Thomas Tuchel fumes over Bayern Munich’s “slapstick” display in Lazio defeat

Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel criticised his team’s performance as “slapstick” following their 1-0 loss to Lazio on Wednesday.

The defeat leaves Bayern facing a challenging task to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals.

The decisive goal came from Ciro Immobile’s penalty in the first leg of the last 16 tie held in Rome.

“In the first half, we had to take the lead. We had three clear chances. We have to do these things,” Tuchel told DAZN.
The second half was “characterised by uncertainty again,” he said. “It was a bit slapstick.”

Bayern’s efforts were hindered by the sending-off of Dayot Upamecano, who received a red card for colliding with Gustav Isaksen in the penalty area. Immobile capitalised on the opportunity, converting the ensuing penalty kick.

“We made a lot of individual mistakes and we conceded a penalty and a red card out of absolutely nothing,” Tuchel said in the post-match press conference. With the performance, we did everything to lose this game, which was completely in our hands.”

The defeat in Rome follows the 3-0 reverse against Bayer Leverkusen, which leaves Bayern five points off the pace in the Bundesliga title race.

But asked if he feared for his job, Tuchel said simply: “No”

Thiago has penned a five-year contract with an option for a one-year extension, as confirmed by the club.

While Brentford did not disclose the financial specifics of the deal, British media outlets reported that the transfer was valued at approximately £30 million ($37.7 million), inclusive of add-ons.

“Thiago is a very exciting striker who fits the role in our team. He is hard-working and a very good pressing player. He is also a physical presence, very good in the box and can link the play,” Brentford coach Thomas Frank said in a statement.

Brentford’s England striker, Ivan Toney, is reportedly being considered for a departure from the London club.

Thiago made his move to Club Brugge in 2023, following a spell with Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad.

During his time at the Belgian club, he netted 26 goals and contributed four assists in 40 appearances.

Thiago is set to remain with Club Brugge for the remainder of the season before officially joining Brentford in July.

Benzema left out of crucial match amidst alleged dispute with coach

Karim Benzema has been omitted from Al Ittihad’s squad for their upcoming AFC Champions League match against Uzbekistani team Navbahor, as confirmed by a source to ESPN.

This decision comes amidst strained relations between the player and his coach, Marcelo Gallardo.

Gallardo has deemed Benzema unfit for the journey after the 2022 Ballon d’Or recipient arrived late to his team’s training camp in Dubai during the Saudi winter break, citing storm-related travel delays from Mauritius.

Despite feeling prepared to play, Benzema has been left out of the squad by Gallardo.

The match against Navbahor marks the first leg of the AFC Champions League round of 16.

Benzema was also absent in Al Ittihad’s recent victory against Al Tai in the Saudi Pro League, following a dispute with Gallardo regarding his participation in a training session.

In AFC Champions League fixtures, teams are limited to selecting five foreign players.

For the Navbahor game, Gallardo opted to include N’Golo Kanté, Fabinho, Ahmed Hegazi, Romarinho, and Abderrazak Hamdallah ahead of Benzema, the former French international.

Benzema, who joined Al Ittihad as a free agent last summer, has recorded 15 goals in 24 games across all competitions. However, he has expressed disappointment with the quality of football in the Gulf nation.

Despite considering a return to Europe during the January transfer window, Al Ittihad rejected the idea and attempted to loan him to another Saudi club, a proposal Benzema declined.

Man Utd considering a revamp of its scouting system; plans a Dan Ashworth recruitment

Dan Ashworth is set to lead the reconstruction of Man Utd’s scouting department upon assuming the role of director of football.

Sources informed ESPN that Brighton’s head of recruitment, Sam Jewell, is the primary candidate to oversee the revamped structure.

Negotiations are underway between United and Newcastle United to release Ashworth from his contract as sporting director at St James’ Park.

Sources indicate that a prompt resolution could see the 52-year-old granted permission to join Old Trafford in the coming days.

However, he may serve a period of gardening leave before officially commencing his new role in Manchester.

INEOS, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, will assume control of football operations at United once their 25% investment is finalized by the NYSE next week.

They aim for Ashworth to revamp the recruitment system at Old Trafford following an audit of the club’s recent transfer activities.

Despite significant spending on new players since 2018, surpassed only by Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, United’s trophy haul has been modest, with just one Carabao Cup victory in 2023.

  • Madrid mull signing of Lille’s Yoro

Madrid mull signing of Lille’s Yoro

Real Madrid is considering making a move to sign Lille defender Leny Yoro, as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) struggles to finalise an agreement.

PSG has shown keen interest in the young centre-back, but they are hesitant due to strict financial constraints, which do not align with Lille’s demands during negotiations.

At just 18 years old, Yoro has attracted attention from top clubs, including Liverpool, Real Madrid, and PSG.

With a recent change in agents to Jorge Mendes, his market value has surged. Initially available for €20 million, Lille now demands a fee of at least €60 million for the talented defender.

Despite heightened demands from Yoro’s camp, PSG remains firm on their offer, leaving Lille to either accept or decline.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, has maintained communication with Lille’s president, Olivier Letang, and Yoro’s family, demonstrating their interest in securing a promising centre-back for the future.

Should the PSG deal falter, Real Madrid emerges as a viable alternative.

With a strong lineup and several French players within the team, Los Blancos present an appealing option for Yoro.

However, Real Madrid remains patient, not rushing into any deals.

Black Stars ranked 67th globally, 14th in Africa -FIFA rankings

Following their disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ghana has experienced a significant decline in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

The Black Stars, previously ranked 61st at the end of 2023, have now plummeted six places to 67th globally, reflecting their regression on both the global and African rankings.

Currently occupying the 14th position on the CAF rankings, Ghana has been surpassed by Cape Verde, South Africa, and DR Congo, who have all moved ahead of the four-time AFCON winners.

This decline follows Ghana’s premature exit from the 2023 AFCON, where they managed to secure only two points from three matches against Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

Meanwhile, Côte d’Ivoire, the champions of the 2023 AFCON hosted in Cote d’Ivoire, have seen a significant rise in their ranking, climbing ten places to 39th globally.

Nigeria, the runners-up, have also made substantial progress, moving up 14 places to 28th. Additionally, Angola, who was eliminated by Nigeria in the quarterfinals, experienced the most considerable improvement, climbing 24 places to 93rd in the global rankings.

Amidst jeers and boos, several high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) faced dismissal by protestors during the Save Ghana Football demonstration.

Among those identified were GFA’s General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, Deputy Sports Minister Evans Bobie Opoku, and GFA’s Executive Council Member, Nana Oduro Sarfo.

The officials encountered a chorus of “Kurt Must Go” chants and disapproving remarks as they approached to receive the formal petition from the demonstration leaders at Black Stars Square, the designated gathering point for the protestors.

The demonstrators had initially planned to convene at the Accra Sports Stadium to voice their grievances to the National Sports Authority (NSA). However, upon being denied entry, they were redirected to Black Stars Square.

The protest stemmed from discontent over the poor performance of the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

With no victories in any of their matches, Ghana was eliminated from the tournament after recording two draws and a defeat during the group stage.

Mr President remember your promise of commissioning the National Cathedral by on March 6, 2024 – Okudzeto

Member of Parliament for the North Tongu constituency in the Volta region, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is reminding President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo of his pledge to commission the National Cathedral on March 6, 2024.

As we approach the specified date, Ablakwa notes with concern that the project remains abandoned, despite the President’s assurances. He attributes this delay to what he describes as a significant diversion of resources.

Ablakwa highlights the government’s initial commitment to not utilise taxpayer funds for the project, yet reveals that approximately GHC 339 million of taxpayer money has been expended on it.

“They said that this would be a private initiative led by the churches and the president’s personal donations, only for a discovery to be made by me,” he said.

Ablakwa mentioned specific individuals whom he alleges diverted a significant amount of funds allocated for the project.

He commended the clergy members who resigned from the cathedral board, stating that their early departure indicated a wise recognition of the situation.

  • GFA mulls a re-appointment of former Black Stars coach Otto Addo

Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reportedly considering reappointing Coach Otto Addo to manage the Black Stars.

Addo, currently a member of Borussia Dortmund’s coaching staff, previously led the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, successfully securing Ghana’s qualification for the tournament ahead of Nigeria.

However, Ghana’s campaign in Qatar ended in disappointment as they exited the competition at the group stage with two losses and one win.

Following Addo’s departure from the role, Chris Hughton was appointed as head coach.

Despite significant support, Hughton couldn’t guide the team to success, leading to his dismissal after Ghana’s early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Amid the ongoing search for a new head coach, recent reports indicate a potential return for Otto Addo.

Discussions within the GFA suggest that the former Black Stars player is being considered for the position, with the possibility of him assuming the role before the end of February.

Parliament to investigate debt owed cocoa roads contractors

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has unveiled plans to establish a high-powered committee to investigate the issue of unpaid arrears to cocoa road contractors.

Bagbin revealed that he has received numerous petitions from both cocoa road contractors and contractors associated with the Roads and Highways Ministry concerning the government’s prolonged delay in disbursing their outstanding payments.

The Concerned Cocoa Road Contractors Association of Ghana has expressed frustration over the government’s failure to settle debts owed to them for their work on various roads throughout the nation.

Bagbin proposed the formation of a committee to thoroughly investigate the matter and emphasised the importance of enhanced collaboration between both parliamentary caucuses in addressing this issue.

“I have received many petitions from contractors regarding non-payment of their labour, a lot of arrears from both COCOBOD and Roads and Highways. In fact, I propose setting up a high-powered committee to investigate that matter because it is very important.”

  • Oppong Nkrumah pledges to focus on Saglemi project, rural housing as he takes on new role

Former Minister of Information and now Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has outlined his key focus areas for his tenure.

He aims to prioritise rural housing, drainage systems, and the Saglemi project, in line with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s objectives.

In a significant ministerial reshuffle on Wednesday, February 14, President Akufo-Addo relieved Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta of his duties.

The reshuffle affected a total of 13 ministers of state, including 10 cabinet ministers and two regional ministers.

Speaking on expectations when he assumes office, the outgoing Information Minister told Umaru Sanda Amadu in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Wednesday that “the president’s priorities for this new era include, in particular, giving more attention to rural housing associated with the Agenda 111 project.”

“He also wants some attention on the drainage system that has the potential to occasion flooding in some of the major parts of the country.

He also wants to look at the Saglemi project and see how quickly we can bring a resolution to it.”

Ghana will be better off with your resignation, Bawumia’s, than a reshuffle – Minority to Akufo-Addo

Minority in Parliament has asserted that President Akufo-Addo’s resignation would serve Ghana better than his recent ministerial reshuffle.

Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, argues that Akufo-Addo stepping down presents the most effective way to alleviate the suffering and hardship experienced by Ghanaians.

In a notable ministerial reshuffle unveiled on February 14, President Akufo-Addo relieved Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta of his duties, affecting 13 current ministers, including 10 cabinet ministers and two regional ministers.

In a statement released on the same day, Dr. Forson conveyed the NDC Minority’s belief that the most effective solution to address the hardships of Ghanaians would be for both President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia to resign.

“The NDC Minority believes that the best way to end the suffering and hardships of Ghanaians would have been for both President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia to resign.”

The Minority Leader remarked that President Akufo-Addo consistently displayed stubbornness and defiance whenever the topic of a reshuffle was broached for discussion.

“For example, he rebuffed nearly 100 NPP Members of Parliament who demanded the immediate resignation of outgoing Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta,” he added.

How Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather influenced my boxing career – Freezy MacBones recounts

Ghanaian UK-based boxer Seth Gyimah, well known as Freezy MacBones, has said that a bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather Jnr. had a significant impact on his boxing career.

Last year, Freezy MacBones decided not to pursue a spot in the 2024 Olympic Games. On Wednesday, February 14, he spoke with Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show.

In an effort to discover more talent, Freezy MacBones has established a promotion agency.

“Do you remember the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather? That is what motivated me. In my opinion back then, I would say Manny won the fight, but Mayweather was smart, and I said to my friends, I think I can do this job.”

“I see a lot of things I can do to help the youth, so we have set up a promotion agency to help discover talent,” he said.

  • England expedites move to sign Man Utd’s Kobbie Mainoo amid Ghana’s interest

England expedites move to sign Man Utd’s Kobbie Mainoo amid Ghana’s interest

As Ghana’s interest in young Manchester United player Kobbie Mainoo grows, Gareth Southgate is thinking of pushing the teenager through the England ranks more quickly, sources have informed ESPN.

Under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, the 18-year-old has shown enormous promise as a midfielder. On Sunday, he started his tenth straight game in all competitions as United defeated Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park.

Mainoo is qualified to change his allegiance to Ghana, the country of his parents’ birth, despite having played for England at the under-17, under-18, and under-19 levels.

The young player still spends some of his free time in Ghana, where the football association of that nation stated earlier this month that they were eager to persuade Mainoo to play for them internationally.

ESPN has learned from sources that Southgate is eager to see Mainoo advance with England and feels he has a lot of promise.

If Mainoo continues his incredible form for United, Southgate may put him in his senior squad, which will be announced on March 14. However, it is more likely than not that he will bypass the U20s and instead join England’s U21 squad.

One of the main topics of discussion between Southgate and U21s manager Lee Carsley in the coming weeks will be Mainoo’s involvement.

Mainoo will only lose his eligibility for Ghana when he participates in a competitive senior international match, and this year’s schedule has made it more difficult.

However, sources indicate that England is certain that Mainoo wants to play for them and that they want to incorporate him into the system.

Prior to the European Championship in the summer, England will play four friendly matches, starting next month with home games against Belgium and Brazil at Wembley.

One option would be for Southgate to choose Mainoo for Euro 2024, but considering that he has only made 17 first-team appearances, that would be a big decision.

Additionally, Southgate may only designate a 23-man squad, down from the 26-man groups used at the previous World Cup and Euros, which were initially increased because to COVID-19 concerns.

This implies that Mainoo may not be allowed to play competitively until the autumn and that there will be less opportunity for experimentation.

Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips, and Conor Gallagher are among the midfield players whom Southgate currently prefers.Trent Alexander-Arnold was included in England’s previous squad for their matches against Malta and North Macedonia as a midfield player.

According to an ESPN source, Southgate is also thinking about bringing up goalie Jack Butland, who revived his career at Rangers after leaving Crystal Palace on a free transfer last summer.

Sports Minister account on how AFCON money was spent, claims no money was paid to the players

Ghana is reported to have spent over $3 million at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast this year, according to Minister of Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, he said that the Ministry had allocated roughly $8.5 million, of which the Finance Ministry had given $5 million for the competition’s initial phase.

He said that of the $5 million made available, only $3 million was used for per diems, team travel, medical expenses, supplies, logistics, and lodging.

“Mr Speaker, our estimated budget for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament was $8,506,450.00 to cater for the team’s pre-tournament and the Tournament Phases (group stages, 1/16 stage, quarter-final, semi-final and final),” he said.

“Out of the $8,506,450.00, $5,071,840.36 was released by the Ministry of Finance, of which US$3,070,067.81 was spent on per diems, flight arrangements for the team, medicals, equipment, logistics and hospitality. This resulted in a surplus of $2,001,772.55, after our exit from the tournament,” he explained.

Additionally, Mr. Ussif, stated that the Sports Ministry raised almost $400,000 to help the government provide the team with the best possible preparations.

“An amount of US$400,000.00 was received from MTN Ghana. This contributed immensely to the government’s expenditure towards the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.”

Media reports had suggested that the Black Stars players were paid $30,000 each before the final Group B game against Mozambique to motivate them in the crucial match.

But the sports minister said no money was paid to the players as they did not qualify for the next round of the tournament. He explained that it’s a measure adopted to manage the country’s resources.

“Mr Speaker, the Ministry had negotiated to pay bonuses should the team progress to the next round of the tournament, therefore, no qualification bonuses were paid due to the team’s exit at the group stage.

“Mr Speaker, this measure adopted by the Ministry, was aimed at motivating the team to go all out and progress from one stage of the competition to the next and also ensuring prudent management of resources,” he stated.

Ghana exited the AFCON group stage after drawing 2-2 against Mozambique in their final group game.

‘Sleepless nights’ over AFCON – 75-year-old woman on why she joined demo

A 75-year-old participant in the ‘Save Ghana Football’ demonstration cited Ghana’s disappointing 2-2 draw with Mozambique in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as the catalyst for her decision to join the protest.

During an interview with GTV, the woman expressed her profound disappointment with the draw, which ultimately led to Ghana’s exit from the AFCON.

Having been a longtime follower of Ghanaian football, she felt compelled to participate in the demonstration, unable to remain indifferent as the country’s football faced a concerning decline.

“Football is my heart, soul and everything. I have been watching football for a long time but our game against Namibia hurt me. I was watching the game when we scored two and allowed them to equalise. I couldn’t sleep that night. I decided to join the demonstration today because of that game.”

The ‘Save Ghana Football’ demonstration is currently underway, with several prominent Ghanaians joining sports enthusiasts to voice their discontent over the recent decline in the country’s primary sporting discipline.

Sparked by Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team exited with just two points, the demonstration began at the popular Obra Spot in Accra and is headed towards the Ghana Football Association headquarters.

Notable figures participating in the protest include gospel musicians Nicholas Omane Acheampong and Great Ampong, along with sports journalist Countryman Songo.

The protest aims to shed light on the prevalent issues that have hindered Ghanaian football’s progress and brought it to a critical state.

I love you and I miss you – Real Madrid’s Díaz to injured Bellingham

Brahim Díaz praised his “world-class” teammate Jude Bellingham after scoring in Real Madrid’s 1-0 Champions League round-of-16 first leg win at RB Leipzig on Tuesday and imitating the injured midfielder’s famous arms-outstretched goal celebration.

Díaz put Madrid ahead in the 48th minute with a stunning individual effort, running at the Leipzig defence before shooting past goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi, leading Bellingham to post “Oh my god,Brahim!” on social media.

The Spain winger paid tribute to Bellingham, who’s expected to be out of action for three weeks with a sprained ankle sustained in Madrid’s 4-0 win over Girona on Saturday, with his goal celebration and then when speaking to the media postmatch.

“I love [Bellingham],” Díaz told Movistar. “From the first moment, we’ve got on really well. I’m helping him with his Spanish. He’s a world-class player, and I enjoy playing with him. Apart from the charisma he has, he’s a great person.

“Despite the absences of Jude, who we missed, and of [Antonio] Rudiger, and all those [players] who are out injured for a long time, we keep showing that we’re a great team, that we’re Real Madrid.”

Díaz began the season struggling to break into the Madrid team after signing from AC Milan, but has become increasingly important and has now scored eight goals in all competitions.

“I got the ball; I started running and I saw they were worried about jumping in; they were backing off and I put it in the net,” Díaz said. “I’m intuitive; I wanted to give it to Vinícius [Júnior] but in the end I took the shot. It was a nice goal.”

“After two years in Milan, he looks stronger, with more character,” coach Carlo Ancelotti said when asked about Díaz. “He started the season without playing much, but when he’s got an opportunity, he’s always contributed. Today he scored a spectacular goal.”

“What did I think [before the goal]?” Ancelotti added. “Don’t lose the ball! And he didn’t!”

LaLiga leaders Madrid will face Rayo Vallecano, Sevilla, and Valencia in the league before their return leg against Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 6th.

Housing minister announces digitalization of Rent Control Department

Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has revealed plans for the Rent Control Department to undergo digitalization, encompassing all its operations, including client interactions for complaints and payment services.

According to Asenso-Boakye, the forthcoming system will facilitate the remote conduct of activities for tenants, landlords, and the Department alike.

“The Rent Control Department has its own portal to receive complaints from the two sides, both tenants and landlords instead of the usual paper work,” he noted.

During his inspection of the system’s progress in Accra on Tuesday, Asenso-Boakye emphasised the significance of rental housing in Ghana’s housing services. According to data from the Ghana Statistical Service, rental accommodation constitutes 35% of urban housing in the country, underscoring its importance.

Asenso-Boakye highlighted that the government is currently reviewing the Rent Act, which is pending before Parliament, to address the evolving dynamics of the rental market.

He emphasised the importance of rental control as another crucial aspect of public service provision.

“We, therefore, want to digitise rent control to reduce human interactions. I have seen many people here who are in queues over rental issues.

“But with the digitization, they do not need to come here. They will just have to apply online,” he said.

Asenso-Boakye explained that, in addition to boosting service delivery, the development would aid in the fight against corruption.

“It will curb corruption because one will not need to come here and for instance, pay an officer to jump a queue to be served,” he added.

Asenso-Boakye announced that the portal is scheduled to go live in March 2024 following pilot testing, with full support from his ministry.

A spokesperson from the technical team mentioned that while the office would be dedicated to other essential tasks, the technology would enable users to list properties, market them, and establish connections between landlords and potential tenants.

“The system is a very user-friendly one and those that have tried it have attested to that,” the representative said.

    Alban Bagbin

Some demonstration organisers visited the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to invite him officially.

Veteran football administrator Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed his support for the march during a courtesy visit from some of the organizers..

“Concerning your protest march, I support it fully, and I will say it is long overdue. Leaders of this country should know that the source of their power comes from the people, and the people’s game is football; it is their passion.

“So, when that particular game is failing, then the government must know that it is failing,” he stated without confirming his attendance or otherwise.

    Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández
has brushed aside rumours suggesting that he might depart from the club this summer.

Fernández, aged 23, made the move to Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 in a €121 million transfer deal shortly after securing victory in the 2022 World Cup with Argentina.

He netted his seventh goal of the season during Chelsea’s 3-1 league victory against Crystal Palace on Monday.

However, with Chelsea currently occupying the 10th position in the Premier League and facing the likelihood of missing out on the Champions League next season, speculation has emerged that the Argentine midfielder could consider leaving the club in June.

“I don’t know where those rumours came from. Social networks, I think. I totally deny it. I don’t want to leave Chelsea, I’m very happy here,” Fernández told ESPN. “Since the first day they [Chelsea] have treated me wonderfully, I am very grateful.

Barcelona is eager to bolster its wing positions and has set its sights on AC Milan attacker Rafael Leão, according to reports from Diario Sport.

Despite facing financial challenges, the Blaugrana are determined to secure a winger with both talent and goal-scoring prowess.

Additionally, they are seeking a midfield pivot, with Everton’s Amadou Onana catching their interest, as long as the transfer fee remains below €40 million. However, it appears that acquiring a winger of the desired calibre would require a more substantial investment.

Although Barcelona inquired about Leroy Sané, the 28-year-old seems poised to extend his contract with Bayern Munich.

Meanwhile, Leão has hinted that this season could be his last with AC Milan, having joined the club in 2019 after representing Lille. Despite reported interest from Paris Saint-Germain, the Portuguese international reportedly prefers a new challenge in either England or Spain.

Barcelona is closely monitoring the situation, with agent Jorge Mendes expected to play a significant role in determining Leão’s future.

Leão is currently under contract with AC Milan until 2028, with a release clause set at €175 million. However, it is anticipated that Milan would be open to negotiation to facilitate a transfer, particularly given Barcelona’s financial constraints.

Premier League greenlights Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25% stake approved Man Utd

The Premier League has given its approval for British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a 25% stake in Manchester United.

The deal, valued at approximately $1.3 billion (£1.03 billion), is pending approval from the Football Association.

While the Glazer family will maintain a majority ownership of the club, Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group will assume control of football operations.

The completion of the deal is necessary for the Premier League’s endorsement.

“The Premier League now awaits confirmation of the transaction’s completion,” the league said in a statement, while confirming Ratcliffe, 71, has also signed the owners’ charter.

The agreement marks the first under the Premier League’s updated owners’ and directors’ test, which received approval from member clubs in March 2023 and involves assessment by an independent oversight panel.

Ratcliffe’s deal, finalised on Christmas Eve, includes an additional $300 million (£236 million) designated for future investments in Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium.

The businessman has committed to purchasing 25% of the club’s class B shares, primarily held by the Glazer family, who retain a 69% ownership stake and possess nearly all voting rights, as well as up to 25% of its class A shares, listed on the New York Stock Exchange at a value of $33 each.

An update from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday extended the deadline for holders of class A shares to tender them for sale until 23:59 on Friday.

Presently, 36.7% of class A shares have been tendered, surpassing the 25% agreed upon by Ratcliffe.

Assuming control over sporting operations at the club, Ineos will oversee both the men’s and women’s football divisions and academies. Additionally, they will secure two seats on both the Manchester United PLC and Manchester United Football Club boards.

While awaiting final approval, Ratcliffe has conducted several visits to Old Trafford and the club’s training ground. According to BBC Sport, the approval process is progressing smoothly.

In 2005, the Glazer family acquired Manchester United for £790 million.

Attired in their distinctive green outfits, the Super Eagles, who secured the runner-up position at the 34th edition of the AFCON in Ivory Coast, were esteemed guests at the event.

Among them was Alex Iwobi, who unfortunately faced online criticism following Nigeria’s loss to Côte d’Ivoire in the final match.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu praised the team, coach, crew, and management for their unwavering commitment and resilience throughout the tournament.

He acknowledged the hurdles they had overcome, resulting in an impressive performance that led them to the finals.

President Tinubu urged Nigerians to maintain their resilience, highlighting the nation’s success in winning the hearts of Africa and the world through the team’s determination on the field.

“Let this recent event not discourage us, but rather unite us to strive harder. We are a great nation united under the green-white-green banner of resilience, joy, hope, duty, and unwavering love.

“To the cherished Nigerian youths showcasing their talents in communities, etching lines in the sand as they play football in their humble rectangles of play, you could be our future heroes. Do not waver in your pursuit.

My administration stands ready to turn dreams into reality” President Tinubu said.

Akufo-Addo promises to build 100 new astro turf pitches this year

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced the government’s intention to construct one hundred additional artificial pitches across the nation by the end of the year.

Akufo-Addo made this disclosure during the official inauguration of the newly completed Borteyman Sports Complex earlier on Tuesday.

“Our administration has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to sports development through substantial investments in infrastructure.

“Upon assuming office, the country only boasted three astroturfs or artificial pitches,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

“We have since constructed over 150 artificial pitches, significantly altering the landscape. I am delighted to announce that this effort will not cease. We are poised to build 100 more such pitches, augmenting our existing infrastructure,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo encouraged the Sports Ministry to aim for excellence in Ghana’s hosting of major continental multi-sport events.

“I urge the Sports Minister, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Local Organising Committee to spare no effort in organising the most exceptional African Games in history,” he emphasised.

    #SaveGhanaFootball demo slated for today

Today, February 14, 2024, marks the eagerly anticipated demonstration against the Ghana Football Association (GFA), aptly named #SaveGhanaFootball.

Leading this significant event is Countryman Songo, the host of the ‘Fire for Fire’ afternoon sports show on Adom TV and Asempa FM.

Alongside him, numerous influential journalists such as Saddick Adams, Nana Yaw Kesse, Veronica Commey, and others are expected to participate, all rallying for greater accountability from both the GFA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Joining the march is Prophet Nigel Gaisie, the leader of the Prophetic Hill Chapel, further emphasising the breadth of support for the cause.

Under the banner of #SaveGhanaFootball, participants will gather at the Obra Spot in Nkrumah Circle at 9 am before commencing their march through the streets of Accra, culminating at Independence Square.

  • Journalist attacks in Ghana: Survey reports 40% as victims while on duty

Journalist attacks in Ghana: Survey reports 40% as victims while on duty

A 2023 survey conducted by the School of Communications at the University of Ghana, has reported that approximately 40% of journalists have experienced attacks while performing their duties.

The survey further reveals that 70% of practitioners are aware of colleagues who have also been subjected to such attacks.

Dr. Abena Animwaa Yeboah-Banin, a Senior Lecturer at the School of Communications, discussed these findings with JoyNews on February 13. She highlighted that these incidents have instilled fear among journalists about the execution of their responsibilities.

“At least 38 percent of those who have been sampled experienced. An even bigger number—nearly 70 percent of those sampled—said they were aware of colleagues who have experienced attacks in their line of work.

“Altogether, therefore, quite a good number expressed feelings of insecurity; they generally felt unsafe doing the work of journalists in the country,” she said.

Dr Yeboah-Banin said this was a cause for concern as the rate of attacks on journalists kept doubling with no measures to curb the situation.

“Report after report has suggested that the rate of attacks on journalists for doing their work, is increasing but the actions that you would see to make a statement to perpetrators that this will not be countenanced—such an action does not seem to be as swift or even existent in quite a number of instances,” she bemoaned.

In the wake of recent attacks on journalists by politicians and their followers, there have been notable developments. Mohammed Aminu Alabira, a correspondent for Citi FM in the Northern region, was reportedly assaulted while covering the NPP’s parliamentary primaries, allegedly by Farouk Aliu Mahama, the Member of Parliament for Yendi Constituency.

Additionally, individuals suspected to be supporters of Mavis Hawa Koomson, the MP for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, are accused of attacking a journalist in the Central region.

Consequently, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called for a media blackout on these lawmakers. Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has endorsed these calls and urged the GJA to intensify pressure on both the Ghana Police Service and the Judiciary to effectively address incidents of violence against journalists in the country.

January transfers: FIFA reports 80% decline in clubs spending

English clubs reduced their spending on international transfers by 80% compared to their record expenditure in January 2023, according to a FIFA report released on Tuesday.

Despite a record total of 5,073 international transfers across men’s and women’s football, English clubs showed unusual restraint in their spending habits.

This cautious approach by English clubs has been attributed to the Premier League’s implementation of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), leading to consequences such as a 10-point deduction for Everton and additional charges for Nottingham Forest.

In contrast to English clubs, spending in other countries remained relatively unaffected.

The total amount spent on international transfer fees decreased by 8.2% compared to the previous January but still amounted to $1.46 billion, marking the second-highest total in any January window.

French clubs emerged as the biggest spenders last month, with a total outlay of $291.9 million.

However, this prudence in spending did not extend to the women’s game, as evidenced by Chelsea’s acquisition of forward Mayra Ramírez from Levante for a world-record fee of approximately €450,000 ($485,000), with potential additional fees of €50,000.

FIFA also reported record spending in women’s football, totaling $2.1 million, which is more than two-and-a-half times higher than the previous year’s figure.

Video: Left to rot! See sorry state of Essipong Sports Stadium, CAN 2008 host

While conversations about the revitalization of Ghanaian football are still rife, popular blogger @GenerationalThinker@KobbyKyei_, in an X (formerly Twitter) post (video), showed the sorry state of the once spectacular and multi-purpose stadium, Essipong Sports Stadium, which hosted a number of games, including the 2008 Cup of Nations.

A candid video of the stadium captures an abandoned and unattended-to facility with dirty looking walls with faded paint and weeds reigning in the wire mesh of the walls of the stadium’s fence walls.

The encroaching weeds slowly envelop the entrance of the once-vibrant stadium, their wiry tendrils entwining with each other as they creep along the edges, gradually obscuring the once-clear entrance pathway.

The resilient weeds assert their dominance over the neglected space. As their greenery flourishes, they cast a shroud of neglect over the entrance of the once-vibrant 20,000-capacity stadium, lending an air of desolation to the scene.

    About Essipong Stadium

Essipong Sports Stadium, also referred to as the Sekondi Sports Stadium or Sekondi-Takoradi Stadium, stands as a versatile sporting arena in Sekondi-Takoradi, the capital of Ghana’s Western Region.

Constructed by the Chinese firm Shanghai Construction Company, it was completed in 2008, boasting a seating capacity of 20,000.

During the 2008 African Cup of Nations, the stadium played host to several matches, including Group B games featuring teams such as Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Mali, and Benin.

Primarily utilised for football matches, the stadium serves as the home ground for Sekondi Hasaacas FC, a Ghanaian club competing in the second division. Additionally, the facility accommodates other sports such as athletics, basketball, volleyball, and tennis.

In 2020, the stadium underwent renovations aimed at enhancing its overall condition and functionality.

  • Constitution mandates media to blackout violators  – Communications Professor Karikari backs GJA

Constitution mandates media to blackout violators  – Communications Professor Karikari backs GJA

Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication Kwame Karikari has backed the Ghana Journalists Association’s (GJA) prerogative to exercise discretion by choosing to black out or shun  coverage of any newsmaker or public official whose conduct is considered disrespectful to the journalism profession.

In accordance with the provisions outlined in the 1992 Constitution, specifically Chapter 12, Article 162-167, which safeguards media independence, Professor Karikari asserts that the media is empowered to take punitive measures against any individual or institution found to be in violation of its principles.

He asserted that such a measure serves as a potent tool for the media to safeguard its integrity and uphold journalistic standards.

“For a minister to behave like that to any sector of the media without rectifying that action, then the politician deserves to be simply blacked out,” Professor Karikari said during a media engagement on February 12, 2024.

As far as politicians have the freedom to give coverage rights to selected media houses, GJA has the right to do the same, Prof. Karikari said.

Even though the blackout has come under scrutiny from individuals such as the Chairman of the National Media Commission, Mr Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, who described it as “not the most productive reaction,”.

However, Prof. contends, “When you assault a journalist, you are telling the media, ‘We don’t want you,’ so what business does the media have rendering a service that you claim you do not want? So for me, the media blacking out anyone is within their right.”

In the last few weeks, two members of parliament, Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson and the Yendi MP, Farouk Aliu Mahama, have come under GJA’s media blackout following attacks on some media personnel during some electioneering activities.

The GJA directed journalists to avoid covering any activities involving the Awutu Senya East MP following an attack on a journalist allegedly by the MP’s thugs during the NPP’s parliamentary aspirants’ vetting in Cape Coast.

The Yendi MP, Farouk Aliu Mahama, has also been included in this total blackout after he was reported to have assaulted a Citi FM reporter during the NPP Parliamentary elections.

But information minister Kojo Opong Nkrumah has called on GJA to ensure that thorough investigations are carried out before the blackout policy is implemented.

  • Saka not top-class yet – Rio Ferdinand tells why

Saka not top-class yet – Rio Ferdinand tells why

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has boldly claimed that Bukayo Saka has yet to reach world-class status, offering his reasoning behind this assessment.

Saka emerged from the ranks of the Arsenal academy and made his first-team debut in 2018 under Unai Emery. Since then, he has been one of the team’s most consistent performers.

His contributions were pivotal to Arsenal’s title push last season, although it ultimately ended with Manchester City clinching the championship, surpassing Mikel Arteta’s men for a third consecutive title.

According to Sky Sports, Saka became the youngest player since Frank Stapleton in 1978 to score 50 goals for the club. Currently, he boasts an impressive tally of 51 goals and 49 assists for his boyhood club.

    Ferdinand downplays Saka’s status

Former player and pundit Rio Ferdinand disagrees that Saka is a world-class player and claims he has to do it outside of the local scene to be recognised.

“Not yet,” he said on Vibe with Five when asked if the Hale End graduate is world-class. “Listen, I think Saka’s been unreal. I actually think he needs a bit of a rest, so many games for a young kid.

“But I think it’s almost like, What is world-class? He hasn’t done it in the Champions League, has he? I’m talking about the nitty-gritty stages. Saka’s top, don’t get me wrong. He’s not world-class yet.

The claim was anticipated to stir disagreement among fans. Achieving 100 goals for a prestigious club like Arsenal at the age of 22 is truly remarkable.

Looking at it from a different angle, this season marks Saka’s debut in the UEFA Champions League. In just five group-stage games, he managed to score three goals and provide four assists.

Ask the coach not me – Cote d’Ivoire’s Ahmed Musa snubs the question of what went wrong for Nigeria

The loss in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 final was a tough blow for Ahmed Musa and the Nigerian team to endure.

Despite taking an early lead, they were unable to maintain their advantage as Ivory Coast executed a remarkable comeback, securing the title with a late winning goal from Sebastien Haller at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium on February 11.

Visibly distraught after the match, Musa acknowledged both personal and collective disappointment. However, he also expressed pride in the Super Eagles’ journey to the final.

“That is football; someone wants to win, someone has to win, simple. We have to be proud of ourselves,” he stated.
The Sivasspor man deflected questions about what went wrong for Nigeria, suggesting those inquiries were better directed at the coach, Jose Peseiro.

“I don’t know, I’m not the coach. I think the coach should have the right answers to this.”
The Nigerian team, previously viewed as the favourites to clinch the AFCON 2023 title, experienced a bitter defeat in a match filled with drama and tension.

Haller’s late goal for Cote d’Ivoire shattered the Super Eagles’ hopes as the hosts staged a remarkable comeback to secure their third continental championship.

Despite captain William Troost-Ekong’s late first-half goal, Nigeria could not maintain their lead, ultimately succumbing to Franck Kessie’s equaliser and Haller’s decisive strike in the 81st minute.

Video: Me! I am part of that demonstration against GFA – Prophet Oduro declares

Ghanaian preacher and founder of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Dr Kofi Oduro has openly declared his participation in the February 14 demonstration against the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the National Sports Authority and the Sports Ministry.

” Me! I am part of that demonstration against GFA,” the preacher said.

The ‘Fix Ghana Football’ demonstration protest is aimed at holding the GFA, National Sports Authority, and Ministry of Youth and Sports accountable for the revitalization of Ghanaian football.

In a tweet featuring a video, outspoken sports journalist and lead convener of the Fix Ghana Football demonstration, Saddick Adams, expressed gratitude towards the founder of Alabaster Ministries.

The Alabaster Ministries founder is heard lamenting the declining state of Ghanaian football and criticising the attitude and commitment of some Ghanaian players. He went on to accuse some players of disrespect for their coaches and disregard for the ‘weight’ of the jersey.

“Look at how the Black Stars went to play. Players don jerseys, and they act as if they are wearing police uniforms, army uniforms, customs navy or fire service uniforms. It is like that. You are wearing the image of the whole nation. The Black Stars jersey is sold to people; the person does not even understand the soul of the nation.

He comes on the pitch and acts like he is doing us a favour. Where are the days where people played Black Stars for free because we were rather doing them a favour? Patriotism, where are the days? I mean, now players gift coaches something small for their pockets and as a result, they don’t even respect them,” he fumed.

However, Prophet Oduro believes that, all these “madness’ wouldn’t have played Ghana football and left it in its current sorry state.

“You substitute a player and he starts waving off his hands. Are you the only player? Come to Ghana and see the players. Go to Police Depot Park, Alajo, Ashaiman, and others. But if not for the madness of GFA, all these things wouldn’t have happened,” he added.

The protesters have outlined some proposals that seek new structural reforms in Ghana’s football, such as the abolishment of the management committees, accountability from sponsorships, and better organisation of football.

They have secured permission from the Ghana Police Service to embark on the protest on Valentine’s Day.

They left after I asked who they were -Kelvin Kiptum’s dad on 4 strangers visit to his son’s home before death

The tragic and unexpected passing of world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum, along with his coach Gervais Hakizimana, has raised concerns and prompted calls for thorough investigations from the athlete’s father.

The fatal accident occurred on the Eldoret-Ravine highway on Sunday night, February 11, when Kiptum’s vehicle veered off the road and collided with a tree, resulting in the instantaneous loss of both lives.

Expressing his grief, Kiptum’s father, Samson Cheruiyot, urged the government to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his son’s untimely demise.

Cheruiyot revealed that days before the accident, their home was visited by four unidentified individuals inquiring about Kiptum.

They declined to provide any identification and left when pressed further, raising suspicions in the family.

“People who came home a while back who were looking for Kiptum but refused to identify themselves. I asked them to provide identification, but they opted to leave. It was a group of 4 people,” Kiptum’s father said, as quoted on Citizen.

Expressing his profound sorrow, he mourned the loss of his only child, whom he considered the family’s sole source of hope.

The devastating impact of Kiptum’s passing has deeply affected him, his wife, and their grandchildren.

Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Ababu Namwamba, announced the government’s intention to honour Kiptum with a dignified farewell.

Namwamba, accompanied by Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei, offered condolences to the grieving families and disclosed that Kiptum had been nominated for a prestigious National Honor, which the President had endorsed.
