Lands Commission worker testifies against McDan, other in East Legon land ownership case

A dispute over land ownership in East Legon took centre stage as a representative from the Lands Commission testified in a case where business mogul Dr. Daniel McKorley, CEO of McDan Group, and another individual were sued for alleged trespassing on the contested property.

The plaintiff, Magnus A. L. De Souza, has filed a lawsuit against Joseph Nii Mensah Ashong and Dr. McKorley for allegedly encroaching on his land.

During the proceedings, Nii Akwei Bruce-Thompson, counsel for the plaintiff, questioned the witness from the Lands Commission about the ownership of the land in question.

The witness, Jacqueline Osarfo Dikoh, a Senior Lands Administration Officer representing the Executive Secretary of the Commission, confirmed that Magnus A. L. De Souza is indeed the rightful owner of the land.

To support her testimony, Dikoh presented documents indicating that the government had granted a lease to Prof. David Kpapko Acquaye on March 25, 1977. Subsequently, Prof. Acquaye assigned his interests to Magnus A. L. De Souza through a Deed of Assignment dated November 8, 1995.

Dikoh submitted relevant documents to the court, including the Deed of Assignment from the Government of Ghana to Prof. David Kpakpo Acquaye, the Deed of Assignment from Prof. Acquaye to Mr. Magnus A. L. De Souza, and correspondence between the plaintiff’s lawyer and the Lands Commission confirming the validity of the plaintiff’s ownership.

Additionally, Dikoh confirmed that Mr. De Souza had fulfilled all financial obligations related to the land, including stamp duty and ground rent, up to 2024.

Further clarifying the land’s history, Dikoh explained that the British Colonial Government had acquired the land in 1944 for airport expansion.

The lease was later sold to Prof. Acquaye, who subsequently sold it to Mr. De Souza, establishing Mr. De Souza’s rightful ownership.

Justice Rita Abena Abrokwa Doko instructed that photocopies of the submitted documents be provided to the court and served to the defendants’ lawyer. The case was adjourned until March 4, 2024, for cross-examination.

    Background

Mr. De Souza initiated legal action against Joseph Nii Mensah Ashong and Daniel McKorley, alleging trespassing on his land, with the first hearing held on July 31, 2017.

Subsequently, on February 13, 2020, De Souza’s legal representative filed a motion for an interlocutory injunction. Justice Doko granted the injunction on the same day, ordering the defendants and any associated parties to refrain from interfering with De Souza’s land until the conclusion of the case.

In his defence, Ashong disputed De Souza’s claim, asserting that his late father acquired the land from the Nii Odoi Atsem family of La in 1974 and immediately took possession. Ashong argued that De Souza, being a non-Ghanaian, unlawfully held an interest in the land for over 50 years, contravening Act 1036 of the Land Act, 2020, and the 1992 Constitution.

However, during cross-examination in July 2023, De Souza countered these claims, demonstrating that his lease had not expired. Additionally, Ashong claimed to have commenced construction on the land in 2000 but later demolished it to start afresh with financial backing from his partner.

He maintained that the land was legitimately granted to McDan by his family, the Nii Odoi Atsem family of La and Okponglo, as evidenced in his statement to the police.

“Neither the plaintiff nor his grantor has possessed the land in dispute or entered or done anything on the disputed land for these years that they claim to have acquired the land. If the plaintiff or his grantor did have any interest in the disputed land, that cannot be the reality now, as for the past 10 years they have not developed or exercised any act of possession on the land, he added.

The Lands Commission witness, however, gave evidence that in their files, Mr. De Souza is the registered owner of the land.

The case has been adjourned to March 4, 2024.

  • GUTA to ensure accountability of presidential candidates in a new social contract

GUTA to ensure accountability of presidential candidates in a new social contract

Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has made a significant decision to establish a social contract with all presidential candidates competing in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

This proactive step aims to ensure accountability from the candidates and demand transparency should any of them ascend to the presidency.

Dr. Joseph Obeng, the President of GUTA, emphasised the need for accountability, highlighting past instances where politicians made unchecked claims without facing consequences.

Speaking to Rainbowradioonline.com during an event organized by the New Patriotic Party on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, where Vice President Dr. Bawunia outlined his policies and vision for Ghana, Dr. Obeng expressed GUTA’s intention to engage with all presidential aspirants regarding their policies, particularly those affecting the business community.

He stressed the importance of tax compliance as a longstanding concern for GUTA, emphasising the necessity of affordable tax systems and broadening the tax base to ensure more individuals fulfil their tax obligations.

Dr. Obeng applauded Dr. Bawumia’s proposal to implement a flat tax regime, citing its potential to facilitate compliance among those in the informal sector. This, he believes, presents a promising opportunity for enhanced tax compliance and economic growth.

He maintained that “meeting with the parties was crucial and that is why we have written to all the parties that we have opened our doors to meet all of them so they will factor in inputs into their manifestos because every political party is a potential winner in the 2024 presidential election. So we have a responsibility to present to them our input so that when they win the elections, they will implement it to help the country develop.

Meanwhile, he has stressed that the flat rate announced by the Vice President is doable, referencing that we have done a flat rate of 3 percent in the past and were able to achieve our targets.

“It is achievable and will help the government. If the taxes we pay are not affordable, it does not ensure compliance.”

  • Increase in cost of dialysis by Korle Bu will only kill people; we will die again – Renal patients

Increase in cost of dialysis by Korle Bu will only kill people; we will die again – Renal patients

Renal Patients Association of Ghana has issued a warning about the potential consequences for patients if the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) proceeds with a planned increase in dialysis fees.

This concern arises as reports indicate that the hospital’s renal unit is facing a new debt of GH₵2 million, just three months after the government settled a previous debt of GH₵4 million.

Dr. Owusu Sekyere, the Director of Medical Affairs at KBTH, revealed that the current cost of dialysis exceeds GH₵720 per session, while patients currently contribute only GH₵380.

This significant difference in costs presents a major financial burden for patients, as emphasized by Baffour Kojo Ahenkorah, President of the Renal Patients Association. Ahenkorah highlighted the financial strain already experienced by association members who struggle to afford the current dialysis fees.

During an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Eyewitness News, Ahenkorah expressed deep concern, stating that any increase in prices would have devastating consequences for patients.

While acknowledging the financial challenges faced by the hospital, Mr. Ahenkorah urged the government to intervene urgently and find a solution.

“We knew this would come one day even though it has come a bit early because they wanted to charge GH767.42 and they were pushed to cut it down to GH¢380. So definitely, there was going to be underrecovery there. But this is the reality on the ground. The consumables are more expensive. But here we are; we all know the economy that we are in. Even for the 380, we can’t pay. The government has to come in.”

“People are going to die again. People are going to die again on this thing…So we will just plead with the government to do something.”

  • Armed robbers shoot over five Chinese in mining site robbery attack at Akyem Akokoaso

A group of about 15 armed robbers has allegedly attacked the premises of Jia Xin Industrial Mining Company in Akyem Akokoaso, within the Ofoase Ayirebi constituency of the Eastern Region.

According to reports, five Chinese nationals were shot, with three currently in critical condition following the incident.

The perpetrators forced their way into the mining site during a social gathering at night, robbing victims of their belongings and bolting with about Ghc10,000 in cash along with two gold bars.

Tragically, one of the victims suffered a gunshot wound in a particularly sensitive area.

Appearing to be a well-planned and diligently executed attack, the robbers took deliberate steps to disable the site’s CCTV cameras by seizing their decoders.

“15 people executed the mission, tough guys. They didn’t pass through the Akokoaso Kade road. They took along the decoders for the CCTV cameras. They didn’t target other civilians. The company is licenced to do deep mining prospecting in the Akokoaso old shaft but is taking undue advantage to mine to that extent,” a witness mentioned during a media engagement.

Meanwhile, victims are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

This event has brought to light longstanding tensions between the mining company and the local community.

Over the years, residents have voiced grievances against Jia Xin Industrial, accusing them of engaging in illegal mining practices.

Concerns stem particularly from the company’s lack of proper licencing for extensive underground mining, which has reportedly had adverse effects on the area.

In 2018, Jia Xin Industrial inherited the prospecting licence from Ofosua Mining and Construction Company, a move approved by then-Minister John Peter Amewu.

However, recent confrontations between the company and local youth have intensified. Just three weeks prior to the robbery, 16 individuals from Akokoaso were arrested for illegal mining activities on the company’s concession, allegedly under the direction of Chinese authorities.

It’s worth noting that the mining company has been a frequent target of robbery attacks in recent times.

  • Osman Ibrahim likely to face disciplinary actions for alleged agent misconduct

Osman Ibrahim likely to face disciplinary actions for alleged agent misconduct

Ghanaian rising star Osman Ibrahim could potentially face disciplinary action for allegedly violating regulations set by the Danish Football Association regarding football agents.

The specific regulation in question, Circular 125, point 13, outlines the guidelines concerning player representation.

Reports indicate that the 19-year-old forward, currently in discussions with Brighton & Hove Albion, has engaged the services of agent Mitch Bakkovens and the British agency Unique Sports, led by Will Salthouse.

This decision has raised eyebrows as Ibrahim is still under contract with his existing agent, Darryl Powell, with an agreement valid until December 1, 2024.

Sources from Denmark suggest that this action might prompt disciplinary measures against Osman Ibrahim.

According to the Danish Football Association’s regulations, violations of Circular 125, point 13, could result in sanctions such as disapproval, warning, fines, or suspension.

The Danish Football Association is currently investigating the situation, and if Ibrahim is found to have contravened the regulation, he could face penalties.

As Ibrahim looks forward to starting his journey with Brighton in the upcoming summer, he will be hoping to navigate this situation without facing any disciplinary repercussions, allowing him to focus on advancing his career.

  • Over 500 applications received so far for Black Stars coaching jobs – GFA Vice President

Ghana Football Association (GFA) has received over five hundred applications for the vacant managerial position with the Black Stars, according to the vice president of the GFA, Mark Addo.

Mark Addo is spearheading the search for a new coach following the dismissal of Chris Hughton after a disappointing performance at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking on Akoma FM, Addo said, “This is my second time leading a committee to pick a coach, and I can tell Ghanaians that we will hire the best coach for the Black Stars according to the criteria.”

He continued, “We received over 500 applications for the job and have shortlisted a handful. We are currently going through them and want to finish by next week.”

Addo emphasised, “Nobody wants outcomes more than we (the FA), believe me; it just so happens that things don’t always go as planned for various reasons, but we must keep moving forward.”

Ghana only managed to secure two points from three matches, resulting in a third-place finish in Group B.

This group stage elimination at the AFCON marks the Black Stars’ inability to progress beyond the group stage in the last three major tournaments: AFCON 2021, FIFA World Cup 2022, and AFCON 2023.

Former Ajax star believes Arsenal would have been better with Kudus

Host of Arsenal Fan TV (AFTV), Robbie Lyle, expressed his admiration for Black Stars winger Mohammed Kudus.

Lyle praised the former Ajax midfielder, describing him as extraordinary in the Premier League.

He revealed his wish for Kudus to be an Arsenal player, suggesting that Arsenal should have signed him instead of allowing him to join City rivals West Ham United.

“Arsenal should have signed Mohammed Kudus. He has been a fantastic player in the league and I believe he would have been a great addition to our team and title ambitions,” Robbie said on Happy FM on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Mohammed Kudus, who has made an immediate impact for West Ham United, joined the Hammers from Ajax for a reported fee of 40 million euros.

  • Brighton officially announces signing of Ghanaian winger Ibrahim Osman

Brighton officially announces signing of Ghanaian winger Ibrahim Osman

Brighton and Hove Albion, a Premier League club, have revealed the acquisition of Ghanaian winger Ibrahim Osman.

The announcement came on Saturday, February 10, 2024, confirming that Brighton has secured the services of the FC Nordsjaelland winger for a fee of £16 million.

Despite the signing, the 19-year-old winger will remain with FC Nordsjaelland for the remainder of the 2023–2024 season before officially joining Brighton in the summer.

Technical director David Weir said he was “a young and exciting prospect.”

He added, “For now, it’s important that we give him the space to focus on Nordsjalland, where he is enjoying a good season.” Osman has scored four goals and five assists for his club in 29 appearances this season.

Ibrahim Osman was strongly linked with West Ham and was expected to join them. However, the deal fell through because West Ham was unwilling to meet the asking price.

  • Mother’s plea: Kudus to take care of bills of young boy who got injured while celebrating him

Mother’s plea: Kudus to take care of bills of young boy who got injured while celebrating him

Ghanaian football sensation Mohammed Kudus has expressed his willingness to extend financial assistance to a young boy who sustained severe injuries while celebrating Kudus’ second goal against Egypt in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The distressing situation of the young boy came to light through a viral video circulating online, where the boy and his mother passionately appealed to Kudus for support in managing the financial aftermath of the injuries.

According to the boy’s mother, he had to be hospitalised at the police hospital after sustaining injuries to his hands and teeth while jubilating over Kudus’ goal.

In his debut appearance at the AFCON, Kudus left an indelible mark by scoring two goals, solidifying his reputation as a prominent figure in African football.

The West Ham star opened the scoring for Ghana in the match held on January 18, 2024, with a powerful long-range shot after skillfully manoeuvring past two Egyptian defenders.

Kudus secured his second goal of the game by expertly slotting in a precise pass from Dennis Odoi.

Despite Kudus’ stellar performance, Ghana’s journey in the tournament was short-lived, as they were eliminated in the group stage, managing only two points from three matches.

The team suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in the tournament opener, followed by 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique in subsequent matches.

With their disappointing performance in Ivory Coast, the Ghana Football Association took decisive action by dismissing Chris Hughton from his coaching role.

  • Second-hand clothing ‘choking’ Ghana; fishermen lament their struggles

Second-hand clothing ‘choking’ Ghana; fishermen lament their struggles

At the bustling Korle-Gonno beach in Accra, Ghana’s capital, Nii Armah and his team of 30 fishermen spend hours hauling their heavy nets to shore and eventually realise that half of the net caught second-hand clothing.

Eventually, their efforts yield results: a massive barracuda alongside an unwelcome catch of discarded clothing bundles. Instead of the abundant fish they used to find, their nets are now entangled with tonnes of clothes dumped into the Atlantic from the nearby Kantamanto market, one of the world’s largest secondhand markets.

“Our nets are lost to the clothing from the markets,” Armah told AFP. “And the fish are slipping away… our sustenance” with them.

Kantamanto Market, located in the heart of Accra’s bustling business district, covers more than 20 acres and is predominantly filled with stalls selling secondhand clothing and shoes sourced from Western countries and China.

Traders at Kantamanto Market import an astounding 15 million garments per week, as reported by the OR Foundation environmental group. However, approximately 40 percent of each shipment ends up as waste, discarded in landfills or washed into the ocean, leading to a significant public health crisis and environmental degradation.

In 2021, Ghana emerged as the world’s largest importer of used clothing, with shipments valued at $214 million, primarily originating from China, the United Kingdom, and Canada, according to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC).

Despite this economic growth, Ghana faces challenges due to the proliferation of fast fashion over the past two decades. This trend has resulted in an influx of disposable clothing from wealthier countries, exacerbating the problem of waste while driving down prices for Ghanaian traders due to declining quality.

    Dump exploded

Although the business has created up to 30,000 jobs by some estimates, local NGOs say it is at the price of an “environmental and social emergency”, with Ghana earning less than a million dollars in 2021 exporting the used garments it receives to other African nations.

The clothes “are mostly dumped indiscriminately because our waste treatment is not advanced”, Justice Adoboe of the Ghana Water and Sanitation Journalists Network told AFP.

“When it rains, floodwaters carry the old garments and dump them in drains, ending up in our water courses and begin to cause havoc to aquatic life,” he added.

The local council, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, spends about $500,000 a year collecting and disposing of unwanted items from Kantamanto market.

But it can only handle around 70 percent of the market’s waste. The rest is either burned nearby, causing air pollution, or dumped in fragile ecosystems, according to the Or Foundation.

Things got even worse when Ghana’s only sanitary landfill dump exploded in August 2019 after being swamped with secondhand clothing.

The Kpone Landfill was closed after the fire, leaving one of the world’s fastest-growing metropolises without a properly engineered dump.

    Ocean tentacles

The result has been disastrous. The sand is no longer visible on some sections of Accra’s beaches, with mounds of discarded textiles and plastics more than 1.5 metres (five feet) high in places.

OR’s beach monitors counted 2,344 textile “tentacles”—tangled masses of secondhand clothes—along a seven-kilometre strip of Accra’s coastline over the course of a year.

That’s an average of one mass of clothing every three metres, with some tentacles dozens of metres long, containing thousands of items.

Even though the Ghanaian capital lacks the infrastructure to deal with such a deluge of waste, the industry “is experiencing significant growth”, warned Ganyo Kwabla Malik, manager of the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant.

The Ghanaian government has been slow to address the secondhand clothing problem, likely due to fears of a public backlash over the loss of jobs.

It did, however, ban the import and sale of used undergarments for hygiene reasons in 1994. But the law was not enforced, except for an unsuccessful attempt to implement it by the Ghana Standards Authority in 2020.

Accra’s municipal officials estimate that a new landfill could cost around $250 million, and that is without addressing the environmental damage that has already been done.

Despite the environmental damage, Malik rejected a total ban of the trade, saying the waste could be burned in incinerators to generate energy. “When you have the infrastructure that supports this kind of investment, why ban it?”

But for fisherman Armah, the government needs to act fast.

“We are pleading with the authorities to do something about this,” he said. “The sea is all we have.”

Coaching not the problem now, but the ‘greedy’ GFA search committee – Songo

Sports broadcaster Patrick Osei Agyemang, also known as Countryman Songo, has expressed his belief that the five-member committee established by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) should demonstrate honesty by resigning from their positions.

Songo asserts that there are significant matters within Ghanaian football that must be addressed before the selection of the next Black Stars coach.

He emphasises the importance of resolving these internal issues before proceeding with the appointment process.

Songo advises the committee members not to be influenced by the monetary compensation they receive as sitting allowances and to prioritize making the right decisions for the future of Ghanaian football.

“Coaching is not the solution, the five-member committee are the problem. Common sense should tell them that what they are doing is not right,” the sports broadcaster said.

He added, “When somebody gives you a job and you the person taking the job realise that this job has problems that need to be taken care of, you should say no. Rather they are thinking about the money they can earn from sitting at the meeting.”

Songo expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership of Mark Addo who is Chairman of the Committee saying, “The one leading the committee is the one who led us to appoint Milovan Rajevac.”

“Drowning deep in my mind” – Christian Atsu’s wife sings a year on after her husband’s demise

Widow of the late Christian Atsu Marie Claire Rupio, has created a song as a tribute to her husband, who passed away in 2023.

Titled ‘Lotus’, the song is a deeply emotional piece composed by Marie Claire in memory of the late Ghanaian player.

She released the song on February 6, 2024, coinciding with the day of the earthquake in Turkey, where she tragically lost her husband and father of her three children.

In a statement on social media, she said, “This is a very emotional day already for me and my Family, so many emotions but I know he’ll be proud of me that I didn’t put my head down. He is watching over us. This is for you up there.”

Christian Atsu was discovered deceased on the morning of Saturday, February 18, 2022, at the location of his collapsed apartment, twelve days following a severe earthquake that struck regions of Turkey and Syria.

The 31-year-old, prior to his passing, had represented the Black Stars in 65 matches after his debut in an international friendly against Lesotho at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in 2012.

Atsu had notable spells with clubs including Vitesse, Chelsea, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Everton, and Malaga, among others.

  • Kyiri Abosom’s GUM pledges free electricity for Ghanaians if voted into power

Kyiri Abosom’s GUM pledges free electricity for Ghanaians if voted into power

Ghanaians may find solace if the presidential candidate of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) secures victory in the upcoming election, as he pledges to provide them with free electricity.

The flag bearer, Christian Kwabena Andrew, widely recognised as Kyiriabosom, unveiled this commitment during an appearance on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio (87.5 FM).

He outlined that, if elected president, he intends to implement a system where companies and businesses bear the expenses of electricity, while households will enjoy exemption from such costs.

“If I am elected as the president, Ghanaians will not pay for electricity. This system will require that companies pay for power, but domestic users will not pay for power. That is why, as part of my plans, I want to construct more companies, and after that, I will start the implementation of free electricity.

This announcement brings a sense of relief to Ghanaians. However, when I hear Mahama promising a 24-hour economy, I feel uneasy because there are no established systems to support business expansion in the country.

With high youth unemployment rates, such promises seem impractical.

Nevertheless, I am confident in my victory in the 2024 presidential election.

My policies and vision are distinctive, aimed at driving economic recovery, tackling youth unemployment, and reducing our reliance on foreign aid.

“I will encourage Ghanaians not to allow the NDC and the NPP to deceive them. We have tested them, and they have failed. They lack credibility. They are both thieves. They have stolen from us and will continue to steal from us. We have to prevent that,” he said.

I cannot confirm if Bawumia did his national service or not – Aide

Spokesperson for the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Gideon Boako, has clarified that he is unaware of whether Dr. Bawumia completed his mandatory national service after finishing university.

Boako, who also serves as the economic adviser to the vice president, expressed his indifference to the status of Bawumia’s national service.

During a national address on February 7, 2024, Bawumia outlined his vision for the presidency, proposing to make the National Service optional for graduates seeking immediate employment post-tertiary education.

He argued that adjustments to the current national service scheme are necessary to better meet the demands of the job market for graduates.

However, this proposal has sparked widespread controversy, with critics raising concerns about the potential for increased corruption.

Vincent Kuagbenu, a former Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), accused Dr. Bawumia of advocating for the optional nature of the NSS due to his alleged failure to complete his mandatory national service.

In response, Gideon Boako defended Bawumia, stating that skipping national service is not a crime. In an interview on Citi News on February 9, 2024, he stated, “Whether he did National Service or not, I don’t know, and I’m not interested in knowing that.”

“It is not everybody in this country who did National Service. In fact, today, it is not everybody who does National Service,” citinewsroom.com quoted him.

Boako further explained that certain circumstances allow for the waiver of national service, adding, “There are people who don’t do National Service but under certain circumstances, it is waived for them.

“It is not a crime to say you haven’t done National Service. If the authorities consider the precedent and the prevailing conditions and they think they have to waive it for you, it happens,” he added.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to foreign affairs; Shirley to be axed or moved? See list of alleged Akufo-Addo reshuffle

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is anticipated to announce the largest government reshuffle since taking office in 2017 over the weekend.

According to numerous media reports, several prominent cabinet ministers will likely receive new portfolios, while others are expected to depart from the government entirely.

Although calls for a reshuffle have been ongoing for years, the most notable recent advocacy came from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong.

At a party event in December 2023, he stated: “We will appeal to the president, that despite extensive discussions, it is time for changes in government for others to participate. If new names and faces come into government, we stand a better chance of retaining power.”

The impending reshuffle follows the NPP’s parliamentary primaries, where several ministers and deputies either lost their bids to return to parliament or opted not to seek reelection.

Accra-based radio station, Accra 100.5 FM, has hinted at changes in five key ministries once the official list is unveiled.

According to the station’s senior producer, Sammy Gyasi, alterations are expected in the finance, information, foreign affairs, roads, and youth and sports ministries.

Below are some alleged details on some appointees:

    a. Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will move to foreign affairs, which suggests Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey will be moved or removed.

It also means the changes will affect the NPP leadership in parliament because a new Majority Leader will be named.

    b. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah will move to the sports ministry from information ministry. It is not known if current sports minister Mustapha Ussif will be axed or moved.

    c. Roads minister Amoako Atta will most likely exit the government

    d. While changes are expected at the finance ministry, it is not known whether Ofori-Atta will be given another portfolio or he will exit the government.

    e. There is also expected to be a change at the housing ministry currently headed by Bantama MP, Francis Asenso-Boakye.

Regarding the foreign affairs ministry, it’s noteworthy that the current minister has recently announced her candidacy for Commonwealth Secretary-General. Exiting the government would provide her with ample time to focus on her campaign.

Analysts speculate that individuals considered loyal to the party’s flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, may be appointed to key roles as the party prepares for the 2024 general elections.

The last significant change in the government occurred a month ago when former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen and Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto resigned to concentrate on their presidential campaigns.

If implemented, this reshuffle would mark the second major overhaul by Akufo-Addo in two weeks. Just last week, 24 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) were dismissed, with 26 others taking their place as part of efforts to rejuvenate the system.

  • Hong Kong match planner to give partial refund to Inter Miami ticket buyers after Messi’s miss out of game

Hong Kong match planner to give partial refund to Inter Miami ticket buyers after Messi’s miss out of game

Organizer of a highly anticipated Inter Miami match in Hong Kong last week, which was expected to feature Lionel Messi (36), has announced a 50% refund for tickets following widespread disappointment that the Argentine player did not take the field due to injury but participated in a match in Japan a few days later.

Tatler Asia, a privately owned publishing and lifestyle company, issued a statement on its Instagram page expressing deep regret and sorrow for letting down fans after Messi remained on the bench during Sunday’s match.

The match in Hong Kong attracted 40,000 fans, with some paying nearly HK$5,000 ($640) per ticket. Tatler announced that all matchday tickets purchased from official channels are eligible for a 50% refund, adding that discussions have been underway with the Hong Kong government to address the matter.

Miami head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino stated that Messi was considered unfit to play in the friendly match in Hong Kong, but he did come on as a substitute in the 60th minute during the match against Vissel Kobe on Wednesday.

“When we learned that Messi would not be playing, we pleaded with Inter Miami CF ownership and management to urge him to stand up, engage with the spectators and explain why he couldn’t play,” Tatler said.

“He didn’t. The fact that Messi and (Luis) Suarez played in Japan on February 7 feels like another slap in the face.”

During the match in Tokyo, large sections of seating at the Japan National Stadium were left vacant, with only 28,614 tickets being sold.

Chinese state media, along with Hong Kong politicians and certain fans, promptly criticised Messi’s involvement in the Japan match. The state-controlled Global Times highlighted Messi’s absence, raising concerns about unequal treatment in Hong Kong.

In response, the Hong Kong government issued a statement acknowledging the refund offered by Tatler Asia. It noted that the refund demonstrated the organizer’s commitment to addressing the situation, emphasising that many individuals had queries regarding the incident.

“The government hopes that the Inter Miami team will eventually provide a reasonable explanation to Hong Kong citizens and fans who came to Hong Kong to watch the game.”

Tatler Asia said Inter Miami had committed to ensuring that their top players, including Messi and Uruguay’s Suarez, would play for 45 minutes unless injured.

It said it had hoped to create an iconic moment in support of the government’s efforts to remind the world how relevant and exciting Hong Kong is.

“That dream is broken today for us and all those who bought tickets to see Messi on the pitch.”

Andre Ayew wins French league goal of the month

Andre Ayew’s stunning bicycle kick against Lorient has clinched the Ligue 1 January goal of the month award for the Le Havre forward.

Ayew’s remarkable goal secured Le Havre a valuable away point in their thrilling 3-3 draw. It marked his second goal of the game.

Entering the match as a substitute, Ayew swiftly levelled the score before Lorient edged ahead in stoppage time to lead 3-2.

However, Ayew’s heroics were not yet complete, as he dramatically salvaged a point for his side with a sensational bicycle kick in the 94th minute.

This memorable performance saw Ayew score his first goal and brace for Le Havre since joining them on a free transfer in 2023.

The draw allowed Le Havre to maintain their mid-table position as they strive to secure their top-flight status following their promotion last season.

FIFA dismisses rumours regarding the introduction of ‘blue cards’ in football

FIFA has refuted claims regarding the introduction of blue cards in football.

Recent reports suggested that the International Football Association Board (IFAB) had initiated a trial for the use of blue cards as a sin-bin penalty, wherein players would be temporarily sidelined for 10 minutes for infractions like dissent and tactical fouls.

In an official statement, FIFA explicitly dismissed these reports as inaccurate and premature.

They clarified that while discussions regarding the possibility of implementing blue cards may be underway, any trials would be confined to lower-tier competitions, not elite levels.

“FIFA wishes to clarify that reports of the so-called ‘blue card’ at elite levels of football are incorrect and premature.

“Any such trials, if implemented, should be limited to testing in a responsible manner at lower levels, a position that FIFA intends to reiterate when this agenda item is discussed at the IFAB AGM on March 2.”

    Madrid seeks defensive reinforcement internally

Real Madrid stands by their decision not to acquire a centre-back during the January transfer window, as reported by Marca.

Despite the long-term injuries of Eder Militao and David Alaba, who are both sidelined with ACL tears, the club opted against reinforcing the position.

Instead, they relied on Antonio Rudiger and Nacho Fernandez to maintain their fitness.

However, Rudiger sustained an injury against Getafe on February 1, forcing Dani Carvajal to play out of position in the recent Madrid Derby against Atletico.

Marca indicates that Real Madrid believes bringing in an emergency centre-back would not have elevated the squad’s performance.

They deemed that none of the available options aligned with the club’s strategy of nurturing young, emerging talents.

Conversely, Diario AS reports that Rafa Marin, a 21-year-old academy product currently on loan at Alavés, is set to return to Real Madrid next season.

Marin, who has impressed during his loan spell, will serve as the fifth-choice centre-back behind Militao, Alaba, Rudiger, and Nacho.

Ivan Toney’s price reportedly a scare for Manchester United

Manchester United is aware that Chelsea and Arsenal are leading the race to secure the signature of Brentford striker Ivan Toney, according to The Daily Star.

In response, the Red Devils are hesitant to engage in a bidding war for the 27-year-old forward.

Manager Erik ten Hag is eager to bolster his attacking options at Old Trafford ahead of the 2024–25 season and has identified Toney as a potential target.

The striker has expressed his desire to depart Brentford, a sentiment echoed by Bees manager Thomas Frank, who believes Toney is likely to move on in the summer transfer window.

In addition to Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring Toney’s situation closely.

However, Brentford is reportedly demanding a hefty £100 million transfer fee for Toney, a figure that new minority United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe considers excessive.

Ratcliffe believes that a more reasonable valuation would be closer to £70 million and is hesitant to engage in a bidding war with Chelsea and Arsenal.

Since returning from an eight-month gambling suspension, Toney has featured in three Premier League matches, netting goals against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham in his first two appearances.

Asamoah Gyan could earn an appointment if Bawumia wins presidency – Sammi Awuku in cryptic response

Parliamentary candidate for Akuapem North under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has suggested the potential involvement of Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan in both the campaign team and the prospective government of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

During an interview with Asempa FM regarding the economic address delivered by the NPP’s presidential aspirant on February 7, 2024, Awuku praised Gyan for attending the event.

When asked about Gyan’s presence, Awuku explained that the renowned footballer is a close associate of Dr. Bawumia and possesses substantial expertise in sports and sports-related investments.

“Watch out for him. Dr. Bawumia likes people with great ideas. He is his good friend, and so watch out for him; you will soon hear from him,” he said.

Sammi Awuku described Gyan as “one guy who has solid ideas and is an iconic figure. Love him or hate him.”

“He may never know. Now that he is in retirement and resting, he should come and show his prowess in politics,” he added.

Gyan’s presence has further fueled rumours of him being a member of the governing New Patriotic Party.

Asamoah Gyan has often been linked with the NPP, with reports that he has been preparing to contest the parliamentary seat on behalf of the party.

Initial reports linked him to the Weija-Gbawe Constituency after the MP for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro Constituency, Sylvester Tetteh, alleged that Gyan was being lobbied by the camp of Dr Bawumia to oust him from his role.

He later apologised to Asamoah Gyan and disclosed that no such plan existed by the Bawumia camp to have Gyan contest him.

GFA set to construct 40-Bed accommodation in Prampram

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku outlined ambitious plans to revamp the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence in Prampram during a Meet the Press event in Kumasi on Wednesday.

One of the key features of the proposed upgrades is the construction of a 40-bed accommodation facility, marking a significant stride towards modernizing the center to align with global standards.

Partially financed by the government’s allocation from the World Cup 2022 funds, the initiative seeks to enhance the center’s infrastructure to cater to the needs of different national teams and facilitate match hosting.

“We are constructing flood lights on the AstroTurf in Prampram. Building a 40-bed accommodation facility, top-of-rang natural grass pitches and procurement of vehicles for regional blocs,” Okraku elaborated on the multifaceted development plans.

As part of the extensive upgrade initiative, floodlights will be installed on the AstroTurf, and vehicles will be procured for regional blocs, adding further depth to the renovation efforts.

These additions underscore the GFA’s unwavering dedication to fortifying football infrastructure and ensuring adequate facilities for training sessions and competitive matches.

For the Leicester City winger, sharing the field with his childhood hero was a remarkable experience.

Issahaku debuted for the national team in September 2021, contributing to the Black Stars’ 3-1 victory over Zimbabwe in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

In an interview with Leicester City Football Club’s official media, the forward said: “When I was coming up, I looked up to André [Ayew]. I liked how he was playing and how much passion he had for football.

He always gave his all to the team and, at that time, I just loved him. I wanted to be like him, and now I play with him for Ghana.”

“It was so amazing to be on the field with him. It was a great feeling to meet him. The most exciting part was that when I went there, he guided me. He started to give me advice about the game and how to improve.”

  • Joker! You would be rotting in jail by now “if Ghana was a proper country” – Kankam Boadu fumes at NSA Boss

Joker! You would be rotting in jail by now “if Ghana was a proper country” – Kankam Boadu fumes at NSA Boss

Ace sports journalist Bright Kankam Boadu has asserted that the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, would face imprisonment if the government were truly committed to combating corruption and the misuse of public funds.

Kankam Boadu made these remarks during an interview on Pure FM, where he criticised Professor Twumasi for incompetence and financial mismanagement.

He stated that both Professor Twumasi and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif lack a clear plan or vision for sports development, implying that their leadership is ineffective and unreliable.

“He is the biggest joker. If Ghana was a proper country, he would be in jail by now. Professor Twumasi would be in prison if we were a serious country. To date, we still cannot find the pick-up vehicle. That man has nothing to offer. He and the sports minister have nothing good to offer Ghanaians.”.

Professor Twumasi faced criticism following his testimony before the Public Accounts Committee, where he was reprimanded by the committee chairman for disregarding directives from the Minister of Youth and Sports.

The chairman raised concerns about the transfer status of Tieku Alexander, the Central Regional Director of the NSA, who was supposed to relocate from Cape Coast to the Eastern Region but failed to comply.

In response, Minister Mustapha Ussif explained that he ordered Tieku’s transfer after the latter refused to grant access to a team assigned to repair the stadium grass in Cape Coast.

“I got an expert pitch maintenance officer, and then I made a recommendation to the director general that the director general should ensure that once that Independence Day celebration is done, we get more hands in addition to the original people who are maintaining the pitch so that we can put the pitch in shape for the match to be able to take place,” the minister told the committee.

He stated that the pitch maintenance expert from Right to Dream Academy arrived at Cape Coast to carry out his duty but was denied access by the regional director despite his intervention in the matter.

“The young man came to Cape Coast and when he went to the regional director, the regional director said that he had not received instructions from the director general and because of that, he wouldn’t allow the man to go there.

“Then I personally called him, and I said, Listen, I am the Minister for Sports. I directed the director general to get this young man to help those who are already working there because I’ve identified him as a very good person.

“Then I called the director general to say I had called your regional director. the young man is there, so make sure that he gives him access to support them and put the place in shape because in the next two weeks we will be playing a match.

“All the instructions I gave, they did not take those instructions. Then it became a very big problem and we had to reschedule the match to Kumasi,” he said.

The minister explained that he later called for a meeting where he issued the instructions for Mr Tieku’s transfer in response to the “disrespect” of disobeying his instructions.

“I gave instructions and those instructions were not taken,” he added.

Mr. Tieku defended himself by pointing out a discrepancy in the transfer letter he received. While the heading indicated a transfer to the head office, the body of the letter stated relocation to the Eastern Region. He sought clarification from the director general, who instructed him to remain in Cape Coast.

Although Mr. Tieku acknowledged signing the transfer letter, Professor Twumasi informed the committee that he instructed the regional director to stay in Cape Coast due to upcoming matches scheduled to be played there.

“I asked him to support the home matches that we were playing there because it was very critical. We needed to honour those home matches and at the time it required a lot of attention and somebody very much experienced until we rectified the issue that he raised,” he justified.

Mr. Twumasi characterised the situation as a complete misunderstanding rather than a matter of disrespect towards the minister.

Following further questioning of the NSA director general, the committee chairman concluded that, despite issuing Mr. Tieku’s transfer letter, Prof. Twumasi had bypassed the minister’s instructions. He had instructed the regional director to remain on Cape Coast.

“You are not actually respecting the minister at all; you are actually undermining the minister. It is not good. No, Mr Twumasi it is not good,” the chairman said.

While noting the similar occurrences with Mr Twumasi’s appearances before the committee, the chairman directed that Mr Tieku move to the Eastern Region with immediate effect in fulfilment of the transfer letter.

Minority plans to bring home remains of late Dr Mustapha Ahmed

Parliament is collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate the repatriation of the late Dr Mustapha Ahmed, a former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, back to Ghana.

Mr. Yussif Jajah Issaka, NDC MP for Ayawaso North, announced this on Thursday, stating that the aim is to ensure a dignified burial for Dr. Ahmed in accordance with Islamic customs.

Dr. Ahmed had travelled to India for medical treatment for a back ailment but unfortunately passed away following a surgical procedure. His demise was confirmed on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. He was 63 years old.

Mr. Issaka emphasised Parliament’s commitment to honouring the late MP with a fitting burial, acknowledging his significant contributions to Ghana’s political and economic landscape.

These sentiments were echoed by Ms. Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, Second Deputy Minority Whip, who led a delegation of the Minority Caucus to convey condolences to the family on behalf of Speaker Alban Bagbin.

Dr. Ahmed had served as the MP for Ayawaso East from 2001 to 2013 before being reassigned to Ayawaso North after the constituency was redrawn. Beyond his political career, he was a retired military officer, a dentist, and an estate developer.

Notably, he also served as the Minister of Youth and Sports during former President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

Dr Alhassan described his death as shocking, saying, “We don’t have a choice but to respect what the Almighty Allah wants.”

He mentioned that arrangements were being made in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to have the body repatriated either on Friday, February 9, or Saturday, February 10, 2024.

Ms. Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, representing Ada in Parliament, expressed her admiration for the late Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, describing him as a highly esteemed individual who left a lasting impact on Ghana’s political and social landscape.

“We mourn with the family,” she said.

He was survived by a wife and three children.

Sports journalist claims Richard Kingson fought medical team for choosing ‘injured’ Richard Ofori

Sports journalist Collins Atta Poku has claimed that former Black Stars goalkeepers’ trainer Richard Kingson had disagreements with the medical team during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking on Sompa FM, Atta Poku alleged that the disagreement stemmed from the selection of Richard Ofori for Ghana’s final group game against Mozambique.

He argued that while the medical team deemed Ofori unfit for the match, Kingson insisted on the goalkeeper, citing his belief that Ofori brought luck to the team.

“The medical team said Richard Ofori was injured and unfit for the last match but the goalkeeper’s trainer said he is a lucky goalkeeper and that he believes he should have started. This is what ensued between the medical team and the technical team. There was confusion between them,” he said on Sompa Sports.

Richard Ofori has faced criticism for Ghana’s early exit from the AFCON due to his mistake that led to a crucial equaliser for Mozambique from a corner.

The Black Stars needed a win in their final group stage match to advance, having not secured a victory in their previous games. Despite taking a two-goal lead, they conceded two goals in stoppage time, ultimately ending their campaign in disappointment.

Their performance in the 2023 AFCON saw them finish with zero wins, two draws, and a loss in their three Group B fixtures. They began with a 2-1 defeat against Cape Verde, followed by 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique.

With just two points and a goal deficit, Ghana experienced back-to-back group stage exits from the AFCON, replicating their fate from the 2021 edition.

Following this disappointing outcome, the GFA has disbanded the technical team and is seeking to assemble a new one to revitalize the team’s prospects.

“The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams,” Randy Abbey, a member of the executive council of the Ghana FA, told The Times.

Kobbie Mainoo has been through the ranks of England, playing for the England U19s and making six appearances.

GFA President Kurt Okraku cries over insufficient funds as a major challenge

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has identified funding as a major challenge in the development of football in the country.

According to him, if he had the opportunity, he would give every club in the country a million dollars every season.

“Funding is a major challenge. Football is a capital-intensive endeavour. Despite our efforts to secure funding, it has not been adequate.

If given the opportunity, I would allocate one million dollars per season to each club in the Premier League, Women’s Premier League, or Division One League,” the Ghana FA boss said at a press session in Kumasi.

Meanwhile, the Ghana FA president has assured that his administration is committed to taking the necessary steps to develop the country’s football.

During the engagement with the press, Kurt Okraku said the association takes responsibility for the poor performance of the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Govt’s payroll no longer has ghost names – Controller and Accountant General claims

Controller and Accountant General Kwasi Kwaning Bosompem has assured the public that there are no ghost names on the government’s payroll.

He made this statement during a gathering in Kumasi, attributing the transparency to a newly implemented digital solution.

This comprehensive digital solution has led to the introduction of the ‘No GhanaCard, No Pay’ policy by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD), set to be implemented in March 2024.

The policy involves integrating the National Mechanised Payroll Database (CAGD) with the National Identification Authority (NIA) database.

Through this system, government employees undergo real-time biometric validation and verification, a process decentralised to CAGD verification centres nationwide.

“The payroll database has been an active database all these years. What it means is that we’ve gone through a process of putting interventions in place to make sure the payroll database is credible and that there would not be any instance where we’ll find an unauthorised person existing on the payroll and benefiting from the government’s resources.

On the specific subject of ghost names, Bosompem told journalists emphatically: “There are no ghost names [on government’s payroll] recently.”

He was speaking on the sidelines of the 2024 Controller and Accountant General’s Department Annual Conference in Kumasi.

Bawumia introduces new policy to clear ‘ghost’ names in government payroll

Just about a month ago, on January 10, 2024, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia unveiled a new government policy aimed at removing ‘ghost’ names from the public sector payroll system.

Speaking at the launch of the National Mechanised Payroll Database by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department in Accra, Dr. Bawumia outlined the initiative.

He emphasised that to cleanse the government’s payroll of any ‘ghost names’, all government employees would be required to link their Ghana Card details to the payroll system.

“This linkage between the NIA database and the government payroll will significantly contribute to eliminating the incidence of ghost names on the government of Ghana’s mechanised payroll system, which has persisted for some time,” Dr Bawumia stated.

GFA to offer extended contract to next Black Stars coach

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA),Kurt Okraku, revealed plans to extend a long-term contract to the incoming Black Stars coach.

This declaration came during a press briefing in Kumasi, where Okraku addressed the nation’s dissatisfaction with Ghana’s performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

As GFA President for over four years, Okraku is spearheading the search for the team’s fifth head coach.

“When we find the new set of trainers, it is our collective decision to stay with them for the long haul and all our national teams,” he stated.

Following Ghana’s disappointing exit from the tournament, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) decided to part ways with Chris Hughton and his coaching staff, signalling the start of the search for a new coach.

To streamline the process, the GFA formed a five-member search committee assigned to identify the new coach within a three-week period.

The committee reportedly received over 600 applications for the position.

Ghana’s premature exit from the tournament occurred after the team finished third in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

The Black Stars faced a setback with a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde, followed by consecutive 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, ultimately leading to their elimination from the competition

AFCON match was more important than Bawumia’s lies -Asiedu Nketiah

National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, revealed that he opted to watch a football match rather than listen to the lecture delivered by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on February 7.

Asiedu Nketiah explained that he considered Nigeria’s semi-final match against South Africa in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be more significant and enjoyable than Dr. Bawumia’s lecture.

“I recorded it because Nigeria’s match was more important to me than what Bawumia had to say… The match was more entertaining than what Bawumia had to say; you know, it is hard to listen to lies.

“You get infuriated listening to lies so I recorded it and I’ve listened to some portions,” he stated.

Dr Bawumia, who is the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, delivered a lecture on Wednesday dubbed “Ghana’s Next Chapter,” where he outlined his governance plans ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

As part of his vision, the vice president announced that he would reverse some controversial policies introduced by the government despite serving as vice president over the last seven years.

But according to Asiedu Nketiah, Dr. Bawumia’s attempt to shift blame on the president will not be entertained by the NDC, as the party will go all out to expose the vice president.

“This is just a precursor; we are coming to issue a major response to his statement and expose him properly. Because if you allow falsehood to lead the nation without acting against it, you are equally guilty of what is happening.

“So for us, we will keep speaking up and continue to remind him that where were you when we were fighting against E-Levy, Emission Tax, and VAT on Domestic Electricity?

“Recently, they forced through to approve the budget, which we denounced. Where are the people in the NPP now supporting Bawumia? Were they not in Parliament? What did they do? He cannot come and deceive us at all,” he told Kwame Nkrumah of Okay FM.

GFA denies knowledge of President’s expenditure on Black Stars

Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mark Addo, has stated that the GFA cannot provide an exact figure for the government’s investment in the Black Stars during the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite claims by Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, that the government spent $8.5 million on the Black Stars at the 2023 AFCON, the GFA has distanced itself from these assertions.

According to Addo, it is the responsibility of the Sports Ministry to create a budget for the Black Stars, and therefore, the GFA cannot verify the accuracy of the alleged amount.

“As to the actual money that is spent, the FA has no input in that. The FA does not receive any money from the Ministry to spend on any item,” the GFA Vice President said at the presser on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.

He added, “The Ministry has a purse holder who is embedded in the team, so every expenditure he accounts for it.”

He emphasised that the GFA prepared a list for the Sports Ministry to determine the amount of money to be allocated to the team. He added that no member of the GFA has a fair idea of the amount the government gave the ministry.

He said, “The perception that the Ministry has spent $8.5 million on the Black Stars—anyone on the FA does not know about it because we didn’t advance from our group stage.

“Once we prepare where we presume the team will reach for the ministry, we have no idea the amount,” he added.

Several days have passed since Ghana’s exit from the AFCON, yet the Ministry of Youth and Sports has not released a report detailing the budget allocated for the Black Stars at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

What Akufo-Addo thinks about NPP members thrashing his record

Following Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s announcement to abolish three contentious taxes introduced by the current administration, the NPP, discussions have arisen regarding his apparent attempt to distance himself from the government’s unpopular decisions.

While opposition figures have underscored this move, members of the ruling party maintain that the ultimate responsibility for the government’s achievements or shortcomings lies with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Recently, a video has surfaced among opposition activists featuring the president cautioning against any criticism of his government’s track record.

This video, verified by GhanaWeb, was recorded at the Jubilee House during a meeting with senior party officials preceding the presidential primaries in November 2023.

“I don’t know what we gain by attacking the record of our own government. When you do that and you become the party candidate, what are you going to tell the people of Ghana?” he submitted.

“That it was Akufo-Addo who misled you and mismanaged affairs; I will be different even though I am NPP; I am still under the elephant sign, I am different and (you think) the people of Ghana are that gullible?

“Let’s be serious. When we are talking about the record of the government, whoever you are, it is your responsibility to ensure that the people of Ghana buy into that record,” he stressed before adding that after the primaries, it is the record of his government that will form the basis of the NPP’s campaign.

Mahamudu Bawumia emerged as the winner of the primary and is now the 2024 presidential candidate of the party. His main competitor in the 2024 polls will be former president John Dramani Mahama of the NDC.

Bawumia, in his first major speech as flagbearer, announced a bid to scrap three tax handles: E-Levy, Betting Tax and Emissions Levy; if they are still on the books come 2025 and he is elected president.

Picture of Samira Bawumia in front of a green and white-designed e-levy cake was doctored – Checks reveal

Shortly after Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia pledged to eliminate several taxes if elected president in 2025, a photo featuring his wife, Samira, began circulating widely.

The image depicted the Second Lady alongside another woman at an evening event, with a green cake adorned with the words “E-Levy.”

The Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy), a contentious tax introduced in 2022, was among the levies Bawumia vowed to abolish during his lecture titled “Ghana’s Next Chapter,” held at the UPSA Auditorium in Accra on February 7, 2024.

However, reports from GhanaWeb’s investigations revealed that the specific photo of Samira with the E-Levy cake had been digitally altered, as the cake had been superimposed onto the original picture shared in February 2022.

The original photograph was captured at the birthday celebration of Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, attended by Bawumia and other prominent members of the New Patriotic Party.

Further checks on social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), indicated that the individuals circulating the manipulated photo were predominantly affiliated with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NDC has strongly criticised Bawumia’s stance on these taxes, which were often met with staunch opposition from both the opposition party and the general public.

    Abolition of three taxes

He said, “Taxes on gambling will be scrapped under my administration. There will be no emissions tax under my administration. 15% tax on electricity will be abolished by 2025 if it’s still under our administration.”

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a warning to individuals with intentions that could harm the Asante people, according to a report by opemsuo.com, affiliated with Manhyia.

Addressing attendees at the Kuntunkuni Durbar held at the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo reiterated Asanteman’s historical status as an independent entity predating modern Ghana.

He recounted the resilience demonstrated by Asanteman during the Sagrenti War of 1874, highlighting the kingdom’s unwavering spirit.

Furthermore, Otumfuo emphasised the significance of the Golden Stool as a symbol of Asanteman’s strength, stating that it encapsulates the essence of the kingdom’s soul.

“Asante is alive. 150 years ago, the whites destroyed this city, but the Golden Stool remained untouched. So far as the Golden Stool remains, no one can touch Asanteman. It is the soul of Asanteman, and Nananom used their blood to protect it,” he declared.

He continued, “You will be overcome if you decide to take out Asante. All those who plot against the kingdom must stop. We live here in love. Politicians must know that power is transient. Use love to rule. If you rely on your power, remember that your time will end soon.”

He asserted that Asanteman has always been welcoming and home to various ethnic groups.

“The Zongos are on our land; we live in peace. Ewes are here, and we have Anloga here, as well as Fantes in New Town. Why is our love being reciprocated with hatred? Let’s be united,” urged Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

He added, “All political parties must know that without Asante, Ghana cannot stand. We are not above anyone; we are equals but I won’t allow anyone to cheat us,” he added.

Lies, ignore them – BoG on purported new 500 Cedis note in circulation

Bank of Ghana (BoG) has strongly denied recent claims circulating on various social media platforms regarding the introduction of new GH₵500 banknotes.

These claims gained momentum following a video circulating on TikTok suggesting that President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia publicly unveiled GH₵500 currency notes and coins during a televised event on Metro TV.

The video depicted the political leaders showcasing what appeared to be a GH₵500 note featuring the image of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, on one side and the faces of subsequent presidents on the reverse.

However, the Bank of Ghana has refuted these claims, emphasising that the highest denomination currently in circulation remains the GH₵200 note.

Esi Hammond, the Head of Communications at the Bank of Ghana, has firmly dismissed these allegations as false and urged the public to ignore such misinformation.

She pointed out that fake news regarding currency denominations is not uncommon and reiterated that the bank would officially communicate any plans for introducing new denominations.

The purported GH₵500 note featured a combination of past and present presidents, including John Mahama, John Atta Mills, John Kufuor, and Jerry Rawlings, who assumed presidential office after 1992.

This inconsistency clearly indicates the inauthenticity of the alleged GH₵500 notes.

Financial experts have urged the public to remain vigilant when encountering news about currency, particularly given Ghana’s current economic difficulties. They stress the importance of verifying information from reliable sources before accepting or spreading it.

The Bank of Ghana reiterates that it is the only authorised issuer of currency in the nation, and any plans to introduce new denominations would be formally announced through official channels.

Controversial radio presenter Blakk Rasta has made a bold declaration, stating that he will leave the country if Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerges victorious in the upcoming presidential elections.

With campaign activities underway for both the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress, Blakk Rasta voiced his intentions during his Black Pot show on Thursday, February 8.

He asserted that he would relocate with his family and belongings, including his pets, and only return if Dr. Bawumia is voted out of power.

Expressing concerns about potential hardships under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, Blakk Rasta emphasised his stance on the matter.

“If Bawumia wins the next election, I am out of this nation. I am carrying my children, I am carrying my dogs and my goats and every little thing out of this nation until Bawumia gets out of power. It means that we are numb to suffering,” he said on 3FM.

Blakk Rasta’s statement comes in the wake of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s address to Ghanaians regarding his presidential vision.

During his speech on Wednesday, February 7, Dr. Bawumia outlined numerous initiatives for the country’s future under his potential presidency. However, some of his proposals have sparked criticism from the public.

Brentford coach confirms Ivan Toney’s exit from club by summer

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has revealed to Danish outlet Tipsbladet that the departure of striker Ivan Toney from the club is highly likely this summer.

Toney, aged 27, has attracted interest from several top Premier League clubs, such as Arsenal and Chelsea, and is approaching the final year of his contract.

While Brentford will seek a significant transfer fee for the English forward, it’s uncertain if they will secure the £100 million valuation that Frank believes Toney warrants.

“It is relatively obvious that Ivan Toney will probably be sold this summer,” Frank said. “We also know what he is worth.

“I don’t think there are many strikers in the world who are better than him right now.

“He is a really skilled striker who is in his prime football age. Personally, as a coach, I would prefer to keep Toney but one day it could be fun to see him on a top team.

“This winter, we actually had no offers for him.

Could this be why Akufo-Addo missed Bawumia’s address at UPSA?

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo disclosed that he had been in Grenada upon the invitation of its Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Dickon Amiss Thomas Mitchell, to serve as the Guest of Honour during the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

His visit spanned from Monday, February 5th, to Wednesday, February 7th, 2024. As part of his itinerary, he delivered a speech at the Grenadian Parliament.

“I held bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Mitchell and paid a courtesy call on the Governor-General of Grenada, Dame Cécile Ellen Fleurette La Grenade,” the President wrote on Facebook.

He added, “As Guest of Honour at Grenada’s 50th Independence Anniversary Celebrations, my message to them was summed up in the following: ‘Do not allow your energies to be sapped by either the failures of the past or the challenges of today. Embrace today’s challenges as opportunities for a brighter tomorrow.

“Redefine your sense of national responsibility and remove any doubt some may continue to harbour about the ability of the black man or woman to manage his or her own affairs. I urge you to devote yourselves to the freedom and welfare of Grenada and the peoples of the Caribbean’.”

On the same day that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo addressed the Parliament of Grenada, his Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamud Bawumia, delivered a vision-sharing speech at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). Some individuals questioned the president’s absence from the UPSA event on social media.

During his address on Wednesday, February 7, Dr. Bawumia outlined his plans, including the abolition of the electronic financial transactions tax, known as the e-levy, if he is elected President of Ghana.

Inter’s boss hopes to resolve the deadlock over Lautaro’s contract

Lautaro Martinez is seeking a contract worth €10 million per season to extend his stay at Inter Milan, but the negotiations between him and the club have hit an impasse.

Despite having over two years left on his current contract, Inter’s offer stands at €8 million per season, leaving a significant gap between the two parties.

However, Tuttomercatoweb reports that sporting director Piero Ausilio remains unfazed by the situation.

“There is trust above all because there is the same intention; both parties want to extend this relationship,” Ausilio said. “It is normal that since there is a negotiation, of course, patience is needed, as with all things.

“The times you have are not the ones we have, but I am sure that in the end an agreement will be reached that will satisfy both parties because that is what we want.”

Inter will look for a transfer fee of €150 million if Lautaro is to leave San Siro.

Bayern Munich increase its pursuit of Barca center-back Ronald Araújo

    Bayern Munich is
reportedly intensifying its pursuit of Barcelona center-back Ronald Araújo, as per Diario Sport.

Sources suggest that the Bundesliga champions have devised a plan to acquire the 24-year-old, with an anticipated offer of around €100 million.

Despite Araújo’s importance to the La Liga outfit, Bayern is confident that Barcelona will be compelled to accept the proposal given their financial predicament.

Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel views Araujo as a cornerstone of his forthcoming project, with the club hierarchy ready to make him their flagship signing on a contract that could potentially exceed double the salary offered by Barca.

Araújo’s representatives have reportedly been approached by Bayern Munich, with the defender having already made 25 appearances across all competitions this season.

It seems Barcelona may soon face a challenging decision regarding his future.

According to a report by Nigerian news outlet Punch, the former member of the House of Representatives shouted and then slumped, ultimately succumbing to his demise when South Africa scored from the penalty spot to level the game.

Mr. Augustine Ekamagule, the publicity secretary of Agbor Community Union, announced Dr. Ojougboh’s passing in an interview with Punch, revealing that the chieftain of the All Progressives Congress died after collapsing during the match, as relayed by a family member.

“The family member said Ojougboh was watching the match and immediately after South Africa scored the goal, he shouted and slumped.”

“All efforts to revive him were not fruitful. It was around that 3 a.m. that the family announced his death.”

The Super Eagles endured a late setback but ultimately triumphed, securing a 4-2 victory on penalties after the match concluded in a thrilling 1-1 draw following 120 minutes of play.

  • I would not run any more – UEFA’s Ceferin president after his end of tenure in 2027

I would not run any more – UEFA’s Ceferin president after his end of tenure in 2027

Current UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, has announced that he will not seek re-election in 2027.

This decision comes after UEFA voted to amend its rules, potentially allowing Ceferin to remain in office until 2031.

English Football Association (FA) was the lone dissenting voice at the UEFA congress in Paris, arguing that leaders should have a maximum of three terms, each lasting four years.

Previously, presidents could serve three terms, but the new ruling means Ceferin’s initial term, which began in 2016 when he replaced Michel Platini, does not count as a full term.

Ceferin took over from Platini, who stepped down due to a ban by FIFA for ethics breaches. Despite the motion passing with a two-thirds majority, Ceferin later declared that he would not stand for re-election in 2027.

Ceferin told a news conference: “I decided six months ago that I would not run any more. The reason is that after some time, every organisation needs fresh blood, but mainly because I was away from my family for seven years now.

“I intentionally didn’t want to disclose my thoughts before, because firstly, I wanted to see the real face of some people and I saw it.”

Critics of the proposal, such as FA chief executive Mark Bullingham, contended that the amendment contradicts Ceferin’s commitment to promoting cleaner corporate governance in UEFA when he assumed office from Platini.

UEFA general secretary Theodore Theodoridis stated that Ceferin’s failure to inform national associations of his intentions beforehand did not embarrass the FA.

“I don’t think so,” he said. “We have a democracy.”

The change is seen as controversial, and UEFA’s technical director, Zvonimir Boban, quit his role in January in protest at Ceferin’s presumed intention to stay on for a further term, calling the move “beyond comprehension.”.

Ceferin responded to this after making his announcement, saying Boban was aware he would not seek re-election and calling his stance a “pathetic cry.”.

“He could not wait because, after my disclosure, his whining would not make sense,” Ceferin added.

Additional statutory modifications, including the mandate for a minimum of two female members on the UEFA executive committee, were also included in the motion. Bullingham, along with delegates from Norway and Iceland, opposed the decision to combine these changes into a single vote.

The FA indicated its support for the other proposed statutory amendments. However, after the motion to bundle them together was approved, the FA felt compelled to vote against all the proposals.

“We requested and voted for the statute changes to be tabled separately, but this was not supported by a sufficient majority and we respect that,” said an FA spokesperson.

“We believe that it was always intended that a principle of three terms of four years should be the maximum period for any UEFA exco member to serve.”
