Economist Kwame Pianim defends BoG Governor amid resignation controversies

Renowned economist Dr. Kwame Pianim has weighed in on the ongoing discourse surrounding the resignation of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his two deputies, amidst allegations of improper government financing.

Dr. Pianim contends that the Governor’s support for the struggling economy should not be deemed wrongful, and thus, there is no need for their resignations.

He stressed that the economic challenges should not be squarely placed on the Bank of Ghana, and he finds no valid reasons for the Governor’s departure.

Dr. Pianim further asserted that neither the Governor nor his team were involved in any fraudulent activities, nor were they inept in their management of the economy.

In an interview on 3News, Dr. Pianim stated, “Resignation doesn’t solve any problem. If the Governor resigns now, what happens? The same Minister of Finance [Ken Ofori-Atta], who is at the core of the economic crisis, recommends to the same president [Akufo-Addo] a new person? They appoint somebody who doesn’t know the terrain, who hasn’t gone through this experience to be able to solve the problem.”

Dr. Pianim argued that the Bank of Ghana did not require parliamentary approval before assisting the government in reviving the struggling economy.

He noted that the suspension of the Fiscal Responsibility Act essentially implied that regulations governing the fiscal aspects were temporarily disregarded.

He explained that this suspension had implications for the Monetary Policy Act, as well.

According to Dr. Pianim, the Minister of Finance’s responsibility was to report to parliament about the monetary policy dimensions, and opposition members should have questioned the simultaneous suspension of the Monetary Policy Act.

He underscored that the Bank of Ghana’s actions were not inappropriate given the circumstances.

Dr. Kwame Pianim’s viewpoint challenges the calls for the resignation of the Bank of Ghana officials while emphasising that the actions taken were not driven by incompetence or fraudulent intentions.

  • Bawumia commissions Tamale International airport as govt seeks to make Ghana an aviation hub

Bawumia commissions Tamale International airport as govt seeks to make Ghana an aviation hub

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia led the inauguration of the Tamale International Airport.

The event marked the successful transition from the old terminal to the new one, signifying the terminal’s full operationalization.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that this endeavour aligned with the government’s overarching goal to expand the horizons of the aviation sector, positioning Ghana as a hub for aviation in the West African sub-region.

The completion of Phase II of the Tamale International Airport project, alongside associated facilities, is anticipated to provide a significant boost to economic activities.

This development is set to support the Northern Development Authority’s initiatives in harnessing fresh agricultural produce for export, employment generation, and wealth creation.

Emphasising the strategic location of the airport within the Sahelien belt, Dr. Bawumia stressed its role in enhancing market access for local agricultural products, promoting tourism, and attracting passengers from neighbouring nations.

He expressed optimism that the project’s completion would encourage service providers to invest in ventures such as maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), cargo facilities, and cold storage for storing and exporting fresh produce.

Dr. Bawumia also raised concerns about unauthorised encroachments on airport lands, underscoring the potential risks they pose to future expansion efforts.

He called for collaboration among relevant authorities to safeguard these lands for future expansion while ensuring the safety of lives and property.

In her remarks, Managing Director Madam Pamela Djamson-Tettey recounted the journey leading up to the commissioning.

She detailed the Operational Readiness and Transfer (ORAT) Phase, which encompassed equipment and system testing, personnel training, and the gradual shift of operations to the new terminal. This meticulous process aimed to minimise the risks associated with such transitions.

Madam Djamson-Tettey praised the dedication and resilience of the ORAT Team for ensuring a seamless migration of operations, acknowledging their pivotal role in the project’s success.

She reaffirmed the Ghana Airports Company Limited’s commitment to delivering top-tier facilities and services to all stakeholders, promising safe and secure airports that offer travellers a pleasant experience.

Phase II of the Tamale Airport Project, initiated in July 2019, encompassed the construction of a terminal building designed to accommodate an annual passenger throughput of 400,000.

Multi-purpose terminal and other ancillary facilities

The newly constructed terminal building boasts several noteworthy features, including a dedicated VIP lounge, two functional boarding gates, and a pair of self-service check-in kiosks. Accompanying these are eight efficient check-in desks, designated airline offices, and commercial retail spaces for added convenience.

Integral to the overall project design is the establishment of a brand-new 5-kilometer road network adjacent to the Tamale-Bolgatanga road.

This purposeful addition serves to ensure convenient and effortless access to the airport for travellers.

Furthermore, the versatile terminal, completed in 2022, played a vital role in accommodating Hajj pilgrims during their annual journey to Mecca in both 2022 and 2023.

The gradual development of the Tamale Airport aligns with a comprehensive strategy aimed at positioning the facility as a viable alternative to the Kotoka International Airport. Of particular significance is its capacity to handle emergency situations involving wide-body aircraft, reinforcing its crucial role within the aviation network.

  • Arsenal legend Thierry Henry praises Thomas Partey

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry praises Thomas Partey

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes Ghana’s Thomas Partey has been of great benefit to coach Mikel Arteta’s tactics at the club.

Arsenal’s transformation under Arteta comes after years of changing the identity of the club under Arsene Wenger.

Although the club has invested massively to bring in new players, Henry admits that Partey, who joined the club for £45 million, has exceeded expectations, showcasing versatility beyond defensive duties.

With his new role in the team, Henry noted that Partey now has support from full-backs to focus on forward play.

Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, Henry said, “Oh [Thomas] Partey is the good player now? Instead of trying to stop the counter alone, he has a fullback on his right and a fullback on his left, so now he can concentrate on what’s in front of him.

“And obviously, the way it finished, people were like, but there was a system and position to make sure that when you’re on the ball, you don’t concede a counter.

“Obviously, the way it finished, it finished but yeah, there are a lot of similarities [between Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta].”

This season, Partey has often been deployed as a right-back in Arsenal’s two games against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace.

Kevin Hart explains why he now relies on a wheel chair

Kevin Hart has found himself in a temporary wheelchair due to what he described as a “foolish” injury he sustained while attempting to outpace a former NFL player during a family barbecue.

In a post on his Instagram Story, which TMZ reshared, the comedian reassured his followers not to be concerned when they spot him in a wheelchair for the next six to eight weeks.

He explained that this situation arose from his attempt to challenge former NFL running back Stevan Ridley, who was formerly with the New England Patriots, to a race.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the age 40 is real,” Hart began. “To all my men, women out there that are 40 years of age and older, it’s not a game. Respect that age, or that age will make you respect it. I was just forced to respect. This is just a public service announcement because I know people are gonna see me out and I don’t want you to be alarmed but I’m in a wheelchair.”

He continued, “Why? Well, because I tried to jump out there and do some young stuff. Tried to go out there and do some young man stuff and I was told to sit my ass down. Shout out to Stevan Ridley I’m gonna put this story out before you do. Me and Steven got into a little debate. This debate was based off of who was faster.

“Those that know me know I’m pretty fast. Steven said, ‘Kev ain’t no way you gonna beat me.’ Steven is an ex-NFL running back, played for the New England Patriots. Very good guy. I said, ‘Steve you can bet it. We get out there, we gonna run the 40 yard dash.’”

Kevin went on to say that in those 40 yards he “blew all my shit” and said he now has a torn lower abdomen and shattered abductors.

“I don’t even know what that is but I tore ’em,” he continued, “I can’t walk. Sit my ass down. This is 44. Tell me what you just lost, son. You just lost every opportunity of me to go and racing you anytime soon. It’s over. Kenneth, it’s over. Sit down. What are we competing for at this age? What am I doing?

“Why did I even race? Stupidest shit ever. Now I can’t walk because I’m somewhere trying to get the title of the fastest n***a at the barbeque. What was I thinking, son? Got to be the stupidest man alive. It is what it is man. This is life, and I’m out. I got about 6 to 8. I blew my shit.”

  • Black Queens looses spot in recent FIFA rankings

Black Queens looses spot in recent FIFA rankings

Ghana’s national women’s football team, the Black Queens, have slipped by one position in the latest FIFA Women’s Football rankings.

In the most recent FIFA rankings, the Black Queens now hold the 59th spot globally with 1428.37 points. This represents a decrease from their previous 58th place, where they garnered 1419.63 points.

Ghana achieved its highest ranking between June and September 2008, when it secured the 42nd position.

The team’s recent ranking is largely influenced by their inability to qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Among African countries, only Nigeria (32) and South Africa (45) have secured places within the top 50.

In the African ranking, Nigeria has maintained its leading position, followed by South Africa, Cameroon, and Morocco.

Ghana has shifted from the 4th to the 5th position due to a marginal difference of 2.86 points.

The social media trolls sometimes get to me – 2Baba admits

Renowned singer Innocent Idibia, widely recognised by his stage name 2Baba, has expressed his disappointment with the excessive attention Nigerians show to his family.

Despite enduring criticism over time, 2Baba lamented that he occasionally remains emotionally affected by the comments made by others.

He pointed out that even though Nigerians insinuate that he’s not diligent, they have never volunteered to cover his children’s expenses.

The father of seven openly discussed these matters during an interview with British-Nigerian media figure Adesope Olajide on the Afrobeats podcast.

He said: “Many people talk about kids, fatherhood, motherhood, all that whole circle. Many people talk about it with a public opinion type of thinking. But it’s deeper than that. There’s nobody who has the exact blueprint for this thing.

“The basic truth of the whole matter is the connection with you and your little ones [children]. There are so many different ways to find it. There’s no one rule or one particular way.

“I speak to my kinds like say they be my mates. I don’t boss them around. I talk to them the way I talk to my friends and mom.

“I get a lot of jabs [trolling]. I had a lot of people say stuff about me. People have trolled me several times on social media. sometimes it hurts. Sometimes some people will just go on social media to say rubbish. It’s just like terrorists bombing innocent people.

“And I will start wondering how till today, none of those critics the way they are concerned about my family come to assist in paying my children’s school fees. Not even a single soul.”

  • I’m a complete opposite of how people perceive me, haven’t had sex for the past 2 years – Kisa Gbekle

I’m a complete opposite of how people perceive me, haven’t had sex for the past 2 years – Kisa Gbekle

Ghanaian actress, musician, and football team manager Kisa Gbekle has revealed that she has refrained from engaging in sexual activity since her pregnancy four years ago.

During an interview on Accra-based HitzFM, she addressed her concerns about media assumptions regarding her life. Kisa Gbekle emphasised that her actual persona differs from the portrayal often depicted in the media.

She further conveyed that she avoids indulging in behaviours such as drinking, clubbing, and sexual relations.

“The way I am being perceived out there is not who I am. You could come to my Instagram and be like, ‘This girl is so hot, she’s probably like this’ but I don’t take alcohol, and I’ve never been to a club. I don’t have a boyfriend. I am not looking for a boyfriend. I have not had sex since I got pregnant,” she said.

When asked about what she does if she gets sexually aroused, Kisa stated that she hasn’t thought of being involved in any sexual activities due to her busy schedule and her child.

“It doesn’t even cross my mind, I’m looking for money, I’m a single mother. By the close of this month, my team will be calling me, even if I don’t have money, I have to find money. I will not leave my son in the house because of a man. Or because of sex,” she stated.

She added that “if a woman is able to stay without sex during pregnancy, she can stay for life without sex,” because she had the most urges during pregnancy.

  • Thank you Saudi’s for signing “lousy and sneaky” Neymar – Bayern legend

Thank you Saudi’s for signing “lousy and sneaky” Neymar – Bayern legend

Neymar Jr.’s six years at Paris Saint Germain were marked by numerous disappointments, with the Brazilian struggling to fully validate the considerable fee paid by the Parisians for his contributions.

Paul Breitner, a legendary figure at Bayern Munich, shares the same view and offers a critical assessment of the former Barcelona player’s tenure in the French city.

Breitner, who also had a stint at Real Madrid from 1974 to 1977, recently had an interview with the German media platform Bayrischer Rundfunkl, where he discussed the period Neymar spent in France as a forward.

    Breitner tears into Neymar

The 71-year-old did not mince his words in slamming the new Al-Hilal signee, as quoted and translated by Goal:

“Thank you, dear Saudis, for buying Mr Neymar, who has been one of the most sneaky footballers in recent years on this planet. One of the greatest footballers is one who only acts, and dives. Lousy! A very sneaky character. I have to say: Thank you very much, we don’t need to stand him any more.”

Neymar failed to deliver on his immense potential, with his appearances for the Ligue 1 champions limited to just 173. Despite this, the 31-year-old still found the back of the net 118 times for the Parisians.

Following his historic transfer to the Saudi Pro League, the Brazilian will now embark on the next phase of his football journey in the Middle East.

Neymar, who is presently recovering from an injury and is expected to make his debut in September, is poised to receive a substantial package of wages and benefits surpassing ₤400 million, as stated in another report from Goal.

    Neymar’s Al-Hilal debut uncertain

As Sports Brief previously reported, fans of the Saudi club will have to wait until next month at the earliest to witness Neymar’s debut for Al-Hilal.

The Brazilian was billed to make his debut against Al-Feiha last Saturday but his new coach, Jorge Jesus, revealed he would still need time to recover.

  • “Nothing to do with midfield” – Erik ten Hag rises to defense of midfield trio

“Nothing to do with midfield” – Erik ten Hag rises to defense of midfield trio

Manager Erik ten Hag says the issues faced by Manchester United are not centred around the midfield trio of Bruno Fernandes (28), Mason Mount (24), and Casemiro (31).

This statement comes ahead of their upcoming Premier League match against Nottingham Forest.

United, having accumulated three points from two matches, showcased unconvincing performances in their 1-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers and a 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Former United captain and pundit Gary Neville remarked that Ten Hag’s choice to position Mount and Fernandes in advanced roles had placed excessive defensive responsibilities on Casemiro.

The latter has also faced criticism for perceived fitness shortcomings.

When asked if United’s midfield configuration was contributing to their difficulties, Ten Hag responded to reporters, stating: “You always have to analyse clinically and that assessment isn’t right.”

“It was about the back and the front. That is why we were so open. Nothing to do with the midfield. We’ve already said that right after the game.

“If you see his numbers, you’ll see Casemiro is fully fit. I don’t have any doubts that (the midfielders) can do it.”

United have been dealt two injury blows in the last week, with Mount and Luke Shaw both being sidelined.

The club’s big-money signing, Rasmus Hojlund, has also been unable to make his debut due to a back injury, with the Danish striker having missed their defeat to Tottenham and win over Wolves.

“Injuries are always disappointing but we can deal with it. Rasmus Hojlund is not available for tomorrow, he came into team training for the first time,” Ten Hag said.

“Next week we expect him to do a full week, so he is very near the squad.”

Shaw’s injury has complicated Ten Hag’s team selection at left back, with backup defender Tyrell Malacia also sidelined due to an injury sustained last season, but the Dutch manager said the club had planned for such a situation.

“(Mason Mount and Luke Shaw) will be absent for some period. Luke will be longer than Mason. Tyrell Malacia will take a few weeks, but we have the solutions in our squad. Definitely,” Ten Hag said.

On Monday, United decided to part ways with Mason Greenwood following an investigation into allegations of attempted rape, with charges against the forward having been dropped in February.

Greenwood said in a statement to British media that he did not do the things he was accused of.

Ten Hag declined to comment on Greenwood, saying: “We are where we want to be as a team.

“I have a lot of work to focus on for the team, so I’m focused on the players I have available.”

Piracy: Prince David Osei threatens legal action against TV channels

Renowned Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei has recently utilised Instagram to convey his profound disappointment regarding the practise of television channels airing movies that have been newly released on YouTube within a brief 24-hour period.

The rapid transmission of films like “When Love Lies,” in which he plays a role, on Ghanaian TV networks has triggered feelings of concern and puzzlement. This occurrence has spurred a widespread conversation about the ethical standards in the country’s media landscape.

“I’m deeply disturbed and shocked to learn that certain TV stations in Ghana are airing movies that have just been released on YouTube within 24 hours. “When Love Lies.” This is incredibly disheartening and troubling. What is happening in Ghana? 📺” he queried

His post has since resonated with many, with some echoing his sentiments about the alarming practise and questioning its motives.

In a lengthy post on social media, the actor and businessman questioned the role of the Ministry of Information/Communication Ghana and how these TV stations managed to secure licences to operate while seemingly engaging in practices that undermine creative rights and intellectual property.

“Ministry of Information/Communication Ghana , how did these TV stations obtain licences to operate? 😡 We need to take immediate action to cleanse the system and put an end to this unacceptable practise of pirating the hard work and creativity of others! 💔,” he posted.
According to the “Hero” actor, all the aggrieved parties have made it clear that this behaviour cannot be tolerated and that legal recourse is on the horizon.

He continued, “It is particularly concerning that Ghanaian television channels are pirating Nigerian movies that are available on YouTube. This wrongful act must be condemned and stopped! It is our intention to pursue legal action against all TV stations involved in this illegal activity. SAY NO TO PIRACY! 🚫🎬 .. Unity TV, GLOBE TV, FAST TV, DAILY TV and others we coming for you all 😡😡😡 @uchennambunabotv @oneandtwofilms_”

The “Say No to Piracy” by Prince David Osei, 39, is gaining momentum, with individuals and industry figures uniting against this egregious infringement.

Notable TV stations, including Unity TV, GLOBE TV, FAST TV, and DAILY TV, among others, have been publicly named and shamed for their alleged involvement in the illicit practice.

  • Asake is bigger than myself and every other Ghanaian artiste – Shatta Wale

Asake is bigger than myself and every other Ghanaian artiste – Shatta Wale

During a Twitter Space session on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, the provocative Dancehall musician Shatta Wale, confidently asserted that no Ghanaian artist matches the level of Nigerian singer and entertainer Asake, who is under the YBNL Nation label.

His remarks have ignited a wave of conversations and deliberations among both industry insiders and fans.

“No Ghanaian artiste has even made it like Asaake. Don’t even bring up the Asake point. Not even me [Shatta Wale], nobody, so don’t even bring that. Don’t bring the Asake name,” he said

Emerging as a prominent figure in the music industry, Asake has effectively drawn the fascination and respect of numerous individuals through his distinct musical style and enthralling stage presence.

His most recent show at the O2 Arena on Sunday, August 20, 2023, has been hailed as a ‘landmark’ occurrence by experts in the music field. This recognition is attributed to both the swift ascent and profound influence of Asake’s musical compositions, which have deeply resonated with a broad spectrum of listeners.

Yet, it’s not only Shatta Wale’s juxtaposition of Asake’s prominence that has sparked controversy.

The ‘Shatta Movement’ artist also delved into his own values and ambitions within the music domain.

He openly pondered why he should endanger his life to pack venues like the O2 Arena, alluding to his past challenges and individual aspirations.

In line with the renowned dancehall artist, his concentration is directed towards financial advancement and amassing significant wealth, as opposed to the pursuit of filling arenas.

“You people call me a drug addict, why should I risk my life to fill a place for Ghanaians or the music industry? I am okay, I wanted to buy house, lands and investments, I am okay, so filling the O2 is not my priority, my priority is to keep a billion dollars in my account , that is where I am at right now. Nobody should disturb me about filling the 02 or my music,” he opined.

He also asserted that he is content with his current accomplishments, including his performance at the Accra Sports Stadium because he did not get support from within the Ghanaian music industry to push his agenda.

“After I filled the Accra Sports stadium, Ghanaians should have given me a helping hand to fill the 02 because I am not from London to be able to fill up the 02,” he tendered.

He finally added, “Asake alone could not fill the 02, industry players contributed so if the Ghanaian industry is trying to burst someone who single-handedly filled the sports stadium without any promos, what more can I do.”

  • Bayern Munich confirms signing of Maccabi Tel Aviv’s keeper Peretz

Bayern Munich confirms signing of Maccabi Tel Aviv’s keeper Peretz

Bayern Munich, the reigning champions of Germany, are nearing the acquisition of Israeli goalkeeper Daniel Peretz (23) from Maccabi Tel Aviv.

This move is being pursued as a potential solution to address the ongoing absence of Manuel Neuer due to injury, as mentioned by coach Thomas Tuchel on Friday.

Peretz arrived in Munich earlier on the same day; however, Tuchel clarified that the deal has not been finalized yet.

“We are trying very hard for him to become our player,” Tuchel told a press conference. “Hopefully he will soon be in our squad. The medical and some signatures, I think, (remain) but there can always be surprises.”

Weeks prior, Bayern had been actively scouting the goalkeeper, aiming to bring him on board for the initial stretch of the season.

This move was prompted by the fact that Germany’s Neuer, an international player, was still several weeks away from returning due to a leg fracture suffered in December.

Bayern commenced their Bundesliga campaign with a commanding 4-0 triumph against Werder Bremen just last week. Harry Kane, who holds the record for the Bundesliga’s highest signing, managed to net a goal and create another in his league debut.

This victory arrived less than a week after their unexpected 3-0 defeat at home to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup.

Throughout both matches, Bayern entrusted the goalkeeping responsibilities to the experienced Sven Ulreich, considering that both Yann Sommer and Alexander Nuebel had departed during the offseason.

However, as they face Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, Tuchel’s squad will be without midfielder Jamal Musiala, who sustained a hamstring injury during training this week. The extent of his absence remains unspecified.

Asked whether that meant that crowd favourite Thomas Muller, who was a substitute against Werder, would start, Tuchel said: “It could be Muller but it could also be Serge (Gnabry) or Ryan Gravenberch. You will have to wait and see.”

“He (Muller) could start but I don’t think he is at the level to play through.” Mueller missed much of the preseason preparation with an injury.

“So the decision will be whether he plays at the start or the end,” Tuchel said.

  • Postecoglou confirms Maddison’s availability for Spurs’ game against Bournemouth

Postecoglou confirms Maddison’s availability for Spurs’ game against Bournemouth

Manager Ange Postecoglou stated on Friday that James Maddison (26) is anticipated to be ready for Tottenham Hotspur’s upcoming match against Bournemouth.

This comes after he sustained an injury during their victory over Manchester United.

Following the game on Saturday, Maddison was observed leaving the stadium while wearing a protective boot. However, he did not participate in training until Friday.

“Madders trained today unrestricted. We’ll see how he holds up but at the moment he will be available,” Postecoglou told reporters ahead of Saturday’s game.

“I think it was the incident when (Cristian) Romero got brought down, he had a shot and it was a block tackle. His ankle was a bit sore after that but the medical team looked after him.”

Acquired from Leicester City in June for a rumoured sum of £40 million, the midfielder became a part of Spurs’ roster and has participated in two matches this season.

The manager emphasised that they took a cautious approach to the player’s comeback, avoiding any haste.

“There was no real push to have him available. It was down to him. People would have seen him in a moon boot but it was more precautionary. He has felt good and probably could have trained yesterday.”

Spurs have impressed in their opening two games after a 2-2 draw at Brentford and last weekend’s 2-0 win over Manchester United and they are hoping to improve on last season’s eighth-place finish under their new manager.

    Postecoglou, however, is urging caution.

“We’re two games in; I’m not reading too much into anything. I want to establish some foundations for who we want this team to be,” he said.

“It’s always good to have some positive outcomes, but we’re still very much in the embryonic stage of building this team, and the way we want to play.”

Spurs travel to take on Bournemouth on Saturday, a team that took one point from their first two games.

Pep in ‘continuous’ contact with Man City as he recovers from surgery – Assistant Juanma Lillo

Despite undergoing back surgery and currently being in rehabilitation, Manchester City’s head coach Pep Guardiola (52) remains completely dedicated to the upcoming Premier League match against Sheffield United on Sunday, according to assistant manager Juanma Lillo (57).

Guardiola is presently recovering from surgery in Barcelona and will not be present on the touchline for Manchester City’s league fixtures against Sheffield and Fulham.

“The contact is continuous; Pep is watching Sheffield right now.

“What’s important is his health. It doesn’t keep him from being who he is. He’s fully focused on the match,” Lillo told reporters ahead of Sunday’s clash at Bramall Lane.

“He is telling us the surgery has been successful; his recovery has to take the necessary time. He feels fine.”

Despite Pep still being involved in the City set-up, Lillo said he would be delivering the team talk to the players in their match against Sheffield United.

“We won’t do a video conference because Pep doesn’t want it,” Lillo said.

Lillo praised City’s new 55-million pound ($69.41 million) signing Jeremy Doku (21), saying: “The team is at a good level, you’ve seen him (Doku); he has specific qualities. He can definitely help.

“Every time a new player arrives, we think they are going to bring something and help the team globally. It’s not about him and placing responsibility on him…”

City’s assistant manager also highlighted the importance of Portuguese international Bernardo Silva (29), who signed a contract extension until 2026 this week.

Silva joined City in 2017 and has made over 300 appearances in a trophy-laden spell at the club.

Bernardo is that kind of player who, in order to look at his importance, you look at his past. His importance is plain to see,” Lillo said, adding that Silva was “good to go” after missing two matches due to injury.

  • Ex ref Dean confesses he shunned VAR call just to save friend from trouble

Ex ref Dean confesses he shunned VAR call just to save friend from trouble

Former referee Mike Dean has disclosed that he chose not to inform another official about an overlooked incident through the VAR system during a heated Premier League encounter between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur last season. His intention was to spare his colleague from further trouble.

Dean, who currently expresses regret over his choice, served as the Video Assistant Referee in a 2-2 draw held at Stamford Bridge in August of the previous year.

In this match, Tottenham’s Cristian Romero pulled Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella to the ground by his hair during a corner kick situation.

The foul was not given by on-field referee Anthony Taylor and Spurs scored a late equaliser during the resulting passage of play.

“I missed the stupid hair pull at Chelsea versus Tottenham, which was pathetic from my point of view,” Dean told the Up Front podcast. “It’s one of them were if I had my time again, what would I do? I’d send Anthony to the screen.

“I said to Anthony afterwards: ‘I just didn’t want to send you to the screen after what has gone on in the game.’

“I didn’t want to send him up because he is a friend as well as a referee and I think I didn’t want to send him up because I didn’t want any more grief than he already had.”

Having officiated over 550 matches in the top football league and transitioning to a full-time VAR role in the previous season, Dean faced repercussions for his error during a particular incident. As a consequence, he was removed from VAR duties for a period of two months.

In July, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) made an announcement stating that Dean would be relinquishing his position and departing from the referees’ organisation.

“That was a major error. If they don’t score from the corner, it is not as big an issue,” Dean said.

“I knew full well I would be stood down the week after. I asked to take a bit of time off because it wasn’t for me.”

The former referee said the VAR role left him “dreading” matchdays.

“I used to get in the car on a Friday and was dreading Saturday. I was thinking, ‘I hope nothing happens,’” he added. “I used to be petrified of sitting in the chair.”

  • Barcelona needs to up their game as they ready for LaLiga clash against Villarreal

Barcelona needs to up their game as they ready for LaLiga clash against Villarreal

Barcelona narrowly secured their first victory of the season in a late comeback against Cadiz last weekend and are now set to face an even more formidable challenge against the “Yellow Submarine” on Sunday.

Villarreal, spearheaded by Spain’s national team player Gerard Moreno, will present a tougher examination for the reigning champions, who have experienced a sluggish start to the season.

In the opening week, Barcelona was held to a frustrating goalless draw by Getafe, and it was only in the dying moments that Pedri Gonzalez managed to break the deadlock against Cadiz.

However, the midfielder will be sidelined for the next month due to a thigh injury, which is a setback for Xavi Hernandez and his team as Pedri is a pivotal creative force.

Recent addition Ilkay Gundogan played a role in creating Pedri’s goal and has been integrating effectively into the Barcelona setup. Additionally, the 16-year-old prodigy Lamine Yamal has also showcased promise. On the other hand, veteran striker Robert Lewandowski has encountered difficulties since the beginning of the season.

The 35-year-old Polish forward has yet to find the net and has appeared somewhat disconnected from the team, leading him to drop back in search of involvement in the gameplay.

“The one he touches will be in his correct place—players want to come deep, I understand, but you can’t lose your position.”

If Lewandowski is not at his best, it may put a lot of pressure on the shoulders of youngster Yamal, who filled in for the suspended Raphinha last weekend and impressed, although Ferran Torres, who netted the second goal against Cadiz, is also hoping to start.

“(Yamal) is very well prepared. He’s very mature, despite his age,” said Xavi last week.

“He’s a player who can make the difference, and that’s not easy at Barça as a 16-year-old. I think he’s ready to help the team.”

Villarreal are without explosive winger Yeremy Pino, who is recovering from injury, but Moreno and new signings Alexander Sorloth and Ben Brereton Diaz have the quality to trouble Barcelona’s defence.

Barcelona are still aiming to sign a right-back and, with Ronald Araujo injured, used Frenkie de Jong as a makeshift centre-back against Cadiz.

League leaders Real Madrid play early, visiting Celta Vigo on Friday night.

The Galicians are celebrating their centenary this week and will be aiming to cause an upset.

However, with Madrid’s new arrival Jude Bellingham starting brilliantly—scoring three goals and providing an assist in his first two games – Carlo Ancelotti’s side are a daunting prospect.

Rayo Vallecano, who like Los Blancos boast a 100 percent record, welcomes Atletico Madrid on Monday in a capital derby clash, while the other “perfect” team, Valencia, hosts Osasuna.

Mercury 13 announces intention to invest $100 million in women’s football clubs

A consortium called Mercury 13, led by sports entrepreneur Victoire Cogevina Reynal, has announced a substantial investment of $100 million intended for the acquisition of women’s football clubs across Europe and Latin America.

The initiative will commence with the purchase of Lewes FC, a team in England’s second division.

The group consists of notable former players, including Eni Aluko, a former England forward who also held positions at Aston Villa and Angel City FC.

Additionally, Arianna Criscione, a former Italian goalkeeper, is part of the consortium.

Joining them are Luis Vicente, former FIFA Chief Innovation Officer, and Nancy Hensley, previously in charge of product and marketing at Stats Perform.

Lewes FC, a member of the FA Women’s Championship, which is one tier below the Women’s Super League, will serve as the starting point for this venture.

The team reached the FA Cup quarterfinals last season but was defeated by eventual runners-up Manchester United.

Notably, in 2017, Lewes FC made history by becoming the first club to allocate its budget and resources equally between its men’s and women’s teams.

“Lewes was a clear choice since they represent many core principles of how we believe a women’s club should be managed,” Cogevina said in a statement on Thursday.

“Building a world-class management team and advisory board has been my first order of business. Women’s football lacks dedicated executives who can take the business to the next level and transform it into the best asset class of our generation.”

The consortium has revealed that they are currently in the final stages of discussions to purchase top-tier teams in Spain and Italy, and their subsequent focus will be on securing clubs in Argentina and Uruguay.

This announcement follows the remarkable triumph of the Women’s World Cup, which garnered unprecedented television viewership in Spain and England during the final.

The ninth installment of the tournament also achieved record-breaking attendance figures, with nearly two million fans attending matches in Australia and New Zealand stadiums.

Bonmati, Carmona, and Kerr set to compete for the UEFA Player of the Year award

Australian Chelsea striker Sam Kerr (29) is joined by Spanish players Aitana Bonmati (25) from Barcelona and Olga Carmona (23) from Real Madrid as the nominees for UEFA’s 2022–23 women’s player of the year award, as announced by the European football’s governing body on Friday.

Bonmati and Carmona were both integral parts of the Spain team that clinched victory in the Women’s World Cup by defeating England 1-0 on Sunday.

Bonmati showcased an exceptional performance in the domestic arena with Barcelona, contributing to the club’s attainment of their fourth consecutive Spanish League title. Moreover, she played a pivotal role in securing victories in the Women’s Champions League and the Spanish Super Cup.

Carmona’s contributions were highlighted by her decisive goal in the Women’s World Cup final.

However, her achievements with Madrid were less successful, as the team finished as runners-up to Barcelona in the league and fell short of claiming any major trophies, coming in second place in the Copa de la Reina.

Forward Kerr’s remarkable performance saw her net 29 goals across various competitions in the previous season, propelling Chelsea to secure their fourth consecutive FA Women’s Super League title and Women’s FA Cup victory. Additionally, she steered Australia to the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup.

UEFA also revealed the contenders for the Women’s Coach of the Year accolade. The final nominees include Barcelona’s Jonatan Giraldez (31), Spain’s Jorge Vilda (42), and England’s Sarina Wiegman (53).

The victors, including the women’s player and coach of the year, will be unveiled during the 2023–24 Champions League group stage draw event in Monaco on August 31st, simultaneously with the announcements for the men’s player and coach of the year.

Man Utd’s Luke Shaw sidelined for weeks following injury

Manchester United’s defender Luke Shaw (28) is poised to be sidelined for several weeks due to a muscle injury, as confirmed by the Premier League club on Thursday.

While the extent of the problem is still under evaluation, the left-back’s absence has already been confirmed for the “upcoming matches.”

Shaw, a consistent presence in manager Erik ten Hag’s lineup, initiated United’s participation in the first two league matches—securing a 1-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers and experiencing a 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

As United gears up to face Nottingham Forest on Saturday and subsequently travels to take on last year’s runners-up Arsenal, Shaw’s availability is doubtful.

These matches will be followed by an international break.

Furthermore, midfielder Mason Mount’s participation in both games has already been ruled out due to an injury sustained during their 2-0 defeat against Spurs.

Additionally, the backup left-back Tyrell Malacia remains unavailable due to an injury sustained in the previous season.

Is Kudus to West ham a good move? Find out three reasons why

The completion of Mohammed Kudus’ move to West Ham United appears to be imminent.

As reported by multiple sources, West Ham United has successfully reached an agreement on personal terms with Kudus and is now in the final stages of negotiations with Ajax concerning a transfer fee of €42 million.

Renowned for his exceptional talent, Kudus is held in high esteem and is projected to emerge as one of the most outstanding players produced by the African continent.

Given his remarkable potential, many Ghanaians are vested in his growth, leading to a debate regarding whether West Ham United is the ideal club to accelerate Kudus’ development or if it might impede his progress.

Compiled below are three reasons why Kudus Mohammed should opt to join West Ham United.

Guaranteed game time in favourite roles

Approaching his prime years, Kudus is on the verge of unlocking his full potential, and the key lies in gaining more playing time.

With West Ham, he secures a position on the wings, resembling his role in his final seasons at Ajax. However, he would encounter competition from Bowen, who has displayed exceptional performances for the club in recent times.

Furthermore, Kudus will also have the opportunity to operate in his favoured number 10 position, as West Ham United currently lack a playmaker.

    Becomes poster boy

Mohammed Kudus holds the status of a prominent figure at Ajax and has the potential to achieve a similar standing at West Ham United, owing to his influence.

As one of the premier talents under the age of 23 globally, Kudus has captured the spotlight. With West Ham United experiencing the departure of their key player, Declan Rice, this summer, the opportunity for this distinction is open.

Yet, Kudus might encounter rivalry from Brazilian sensation Lucas Paqueta, who has risen to the occasion following Rice’s exit.

  • Salah is a Liverpool player, he is not for sale – Jurgen Klopp responds to player’s Saudi links

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp (56) firmly stated on Friday that Mohamed Salah (31) is not available for transfer, and the club has not received any offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad.

Reports in the British media on Thursday indicated that Al Ittihad was making another attempt to secure the services of the Egyptian international. However, Klopp categorically ruled out any potential deal.

Since his arrival at Liverpool in 2017, Salah has been a prolific scorer, netting 187 goals in 307 appearances. His contributions have played a significant role in Liverpool’s triumphs, including winning the Premier League and the Champions League.

“It’s always difficult to talk about media stories because there’s nothing to talk about from our point of view,” Klopp told reporters ahead of Liverpool’s game with Saudi-owned Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday.

“We don’t have an offer, Mo Salah is a Liverpool player. Obviously, for all the things we do, essential is, was, and will be. There’s nothing there, if there were something, the answer would be no.”

The manager also emphasised that Salah, who inked a three-year contract extension last year, remains fully devoted to Liverpool.

During their 3-1 victory against Bournemouth on Saturday, Liverpool faced a red card situation when Alexis MacAllister (24) was sent off, reducing them to 10 players. However, following an appeal, the red card has since been revoked, leading the manager to express immense relief.

“I wasn’t sure after the game so when I saw the pictures back, I was really sure that it’s not a red card,” Klopp said, “but that doesn’t mean immediately that our appeal will be successful.”

Mac Allister is now eligible for the upcoming match against Newcastle, where Klopp will face off against Eddie Howe.

Having assumed the helm of Newcastle in 2021, Howe guided the club to a commendable fourth-place finish in the previous season, securing a spot in the Champions League. Klopp praised Howe as an exceptional coach.

Klopp confirmed that right back Trent Alexander-Arnold (24) is in good shape after departing the field with a minor injury during the Bournemouth match last weekend. Furthermore, midfielders Thiago Alcantara (32) and Curtis Jones (22) are set to be available starting Monday.

However, centre back Ibrahima Konate (24) is grappling with a muscle injury and is uncertain for the upcoming Newcastle game.

“Playing 40 minutes with 10 men didn’t help. That’s the situation,” Klopp said.

Liverpool have four points after two Premier League games, with Newcastle one point behind.

  • Luis Rubiales says he “will not resign” after uninvited kissing of Spanish player, Jenni Hermoso

Luis Rubiales says he “will not resign” after uninvited kissing of Spanish player, Jenni Hermoso

Despite the backlash following his uninvited kiss on the mouth of player Jenni Hermoso (33) during celebrations after Spain’s Women’s World Cup triumph, Luis Rubiales, President of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), refused to step down on Friday.

The incident triggered outrage both within Spain and beyond its borders, prompting numerous voices, including government officials, players, and coaches, to call for his resignation.

This pressure led to the federation convening an emergency assembly on Friday. During this assembly, Rubiales asserted that the kiss was consensual and portrayed himself as the target of what he termed ‘social assassination’.

I will not resign, I will not resign,” he said.

He had been under fire after kissing Hermoso on the lips while handing the team their medals after they beat England 1-0 in the final on Sunday in Sydney.

Hermoso has said in a statement that such acts “should never go unpunished”.

Rubiales’ half-hearted apology on Monday failed to quell the uproar and on Thursday, FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against him.

Al-Ittihad boss Nuno Espirito Santo thrashes “baseless” claims of rift between Benzema and club

Al Ittihad’s manager, Nuno Espirito Santo (49), has dismissed media speculations of a rift with Karim Benzema (35) as “baseless,” following the French striker’s inaugural Saudi Pro League goal in a 4-0 triumph over Al-Riyadh on Thursday.

Reports from Saudi media had suggested that Benzema, the Ballon d’Or awardee, who hadn’t found the net in the initial two league matches, was dissatisfied with the treatment he received from the Portuguese coach.

Furthermore, there were indications that the former manager of Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers believed that the former Real Madrid captain didn’t align with his tactical approach.

Nuno faced backlash from fans on social media and within the Saudi media, even facing calls for his removal, despite guiding Al Ittihad to their first league championship since 2009 in the previous season.

Spanish FA President steps down after kissing saga- Reports

The unexpected gesture by Luis Rubiales at the FIFA Women’s World Cup final has attracted significant attention. His impromptu kiss shared with forward Jennifer Hermoso during the Spanish team’s medal ceremony has triggered a flurry of responses.

Initially, Rubiales issued an apology for the kiss in a lengthy video statement on Monday.

However, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez deemed this apology “insufficient,” and Second Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz added her voice to the calls for his resignation.

Allegedly, the 46-year-old has informed his colleagues of his decision and is now poised to reveal his resignation on Friday.

Spanish football analyst Guillem Balague shared the following on Twitter:

“Rubiales will resign tomorrow. He had lost the backing of the players, the government, FIFA, and even those local organisations that depend on the federation budget.”

The Spanish FA president, upon resignation, looks set to face further disciplinary actions.

    Rubiales to face disciplinary action
Rubiales’ action was tainted by the statement of Jenni Hermoso, the former Barcelona star, who expressed that she “did not enjoy it.”

On Wednesday, Hermoso, through the FUTPRO union, released a communication about the incident:

“My FUTPRO union, in coordination with my TMJ agency, is taking charge of defending my interests and being the communication channel on this matter.”

As per information from the BBC, FIFA will also examine whether his conduct breaches Article 13 within its disciplinary regulations, which pertains to offensive behaviour and fair play.

“Fifa reiterates its unwavering commitment to respecting the integrity of all individuals and strongly condemns any behaviour to the contrary,” the football governing body said in a statement.

According to the disciplinary code, officials are among those who must “comply with the principles of fair play, loyalty, and integrity.”

It says disciplinary measures can be brought against anyone “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”, “insulting a natural or legal person in any way, especially by using offensive gestures, signs, or language,” or “behaving in a way that brings the sport of football and/or Fifa into disrepute.”

What sanction would be meted out to the FA president, who has consistently divided opinion, remains to be seen.

    Luis Rubiales under fire

A prior article by Sports Brief highlighted the scrutiny faced by Luis Rubiales, Spain’s football federation chief, for kissing attacking midfielder Jennifer Hermoso.

Amid controversy, the 46-year-old is confronted with demands for his resignation. This comes after he embraced star player Jennifer Hermoso’s head and kissed her forcefully following Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in the final held in Australia on Sunday.

6 noteworthy moments of the late WWE star, Bray Wyatt

The WWE universe is in deep mourning at the news that superstar Bray Wyatt (real name Windham Rotunda) tragically passed away at 36 after a long battle with an undisclosed life-threatening illness.

The former leader of the Wyatt family and the mind behind ‘The Fiend’ persona was last seen on screen in February.

It was later revealed Rotunda was suffering from a serious bout of illness and was claimed to have been nearing a return to the ring before news of his tragic passing yesterday (August 24).

Sports Brief looks at six of Wyatt’s best moments in the squared circle, including a championship reign.

    1. Beating John Cena at Extreme Rules

Wyatt joined the WWE roster in 2012 and was immediately thrown into feuds with A-listers. One of them was John Cena, who defeated him at Wrestlemania 30. The two met again at Extreme Rules and the match descended into a 3-on-1 handicap match after Harper and Eric Rowan interfered.

Hammy Review further noted that it turned into a steel cage match where Cena managed to fight all three members of the Wyatt stable and as he was exiting the cage, he was interrupted by a choir of singing children. This allowed Bray Wyatt to pounce and score a pinfall victory over the superstar.

    2. Wyatt wins WWE title

Wyatt’s first title triumph in WWE came at the expense of Cena yet again. The 15-time world champion put his title on the line in the Elimination Chamber in 2017 against Baron Corbin, The Miz, Dean Ambrose, and AJ Styles.

Wyatt first eliminated Cena to guarantee a new champion would be crowned before finally hitting Styles with his ‘Sister Abigail’ finisher to score a pinfall victory for his first singles title in the company. According to Inside the Ropes, his reign lasted 49 days before losing it to Randy Orton.

    3. Wyatt’s first Universal Title reign

He captured his first Universal title as ‘The Fiend’ against Seth Rollins at Crown Jewel in 2019. He survived an onslaught from ‘The Architect’ before locking in the mandible claw and hitting Sister Abigail for the win. Wyatt’s reign lasted 119 days before Roman Reigns claimed the belt.

    1. Ripping off Daniel Bryan’s hair
The Fiend defeated Daniel Bryan at the Survivor Series in 2019 in a successful defence of his Universal title. That seemed to have ended their feud but the ghoulish wrestler attacked Bryan on Smackdown days later. He tore the ring and dragged him into it before reappearing with some of Bryan’s hair.
The Aberdeen-born superstar later confirmed he pitched the idea of shaving his beard but not his hair, as reported by WrestletalkTV.

  • Lukaku eyes Roma as Juve move delays excessively

Lukaku eyes Roma as Juve move delays excessively

Romelu Lukaku is reportedly set to reject Juventus and opt for a season-long loan deal with AS Roma under the management of Jose Mourinho, departing from Chelsea.

Lukaku’s transfer saga has taken an unexpected twist, with the striker now veering away from a move to Juventus. As per The Telegraph, discussions are underway for him to join Roma on loan for the upcoming season.

This surprising shift has led Chelsea to reassess their stance, considering the possibility of allowing Lukaku to depart on loan, a change from their earlier insistence on a permanent transfer.

Lukaku’s decision to spurn Juventus arises from his belief that negotiations have been prolonged excessively, leading him to no longer favour a move to Turin.

Although the final details of the arrangement are being settled, it’s improbable that a buy-option will be incorporated into the deal.

In the meantime, Juventus presented a proposal wherein Chelsea would pay £30 million ($23.5 million) and trade Lukaku for Dusan Vlahovic.

    Nonetheless, Chelsea rejected this proposition.

While Lukaku had previously rejected advances from Al-Hilal, he remains steadfast in his desire to continue his career in Europe.

Nevertheless, there have been indications that other clubs in the Pro League are also interested in signing him if he doesn’t secure a club before the transfer window closes.

Any such proposal, however, would likely be considerably less favourable than Al-Hilal’s offer.

Having trained with Chelsea’s U21 team due to not featuring in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans, Lukaku’s potential move to Roma on loan could mark a pivotal juncture in his career, presenting a golden opportunity for him to rejuvenate his trajectory.

Benzema finds the back of the net as Al Ittihad thumbed Al-Riyadh in 4-0 game

Putting an end to his goal-scoring drought in the Saudi Pro League, Karim Benzema netted his inaugural goal for Al-Ittihad against Al-Riyadh on Thursday evening.

Benzema’s tenure at the Saudi club has been under the spotlight of intense speculation, but he made a noteworthy entry into the top flight by scoring his debut goal after featuring in three matches.

Initially, the 35-year-old made an impactful start for Al-Ittihad, securing three goals in his initial appearances during the 2023 Arab Cup. However, as the 2023–24 league season commenced, finding the back of the net became a challenge.

Nonetheless, the reigning Ballon d’Or recipient appears to have reconciled any reported disagreements with manager Nuno Espirito Santo, as he found the target with an assist from Romarinho.

With his first goal, Benzema is likely harbouring hopes of embarking on a goal-scoring spree, aiming to contribute to the Tigers’ pursuit of retaining their league championship this season.

Yet, formidable competition stands in their way, with Neymar’s Al-Hilal and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr posing as fierce rivals.

    Santo reportedly wants Benzema sacked
Sports Brief also reported that, according to Saudi Arabian newspaper, Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, Santo wants Benzema out of Al-Ittihad.

It was claimed the coach approached the club’s board, stating his tactical approach did not align with the French star’s style of play.

Santo was also not the driving force behind the acquisition of Benzema, reportedly leading to tension within the team locker room.

Al Ittihad debunks Benzema exit talks
However, as Sports Brief also reported, Al-Ittihad has quashed speculations surrounding Benzema amid claims he would be departing the Saudi Pro League club due to tension with his coach.

The reigning Saudi Pro League champions have refuted these claims, asserting that Benzema remains content and sharing a brief video clip of the forward smiling at one of the club’s facilities.

  • Kudus finalises 5 year deal with West Ham – Reports

Kudus finalises 5 year deal with West Ham – Reports

Mohammed Kudus has finalised personal arrangements for a five-year contract with West Ham, according to Dharmesh Sheth.

This paves the way for his transfer from Ajax, which is expected to take place over the coming weekend.

The Ghanaian player showcased his talents by netting a hat-trick during Ajax’s 4-1 victory against Ludogorets in the Europa League play-off qualifying first leg on Thursday, August 24th.

Kudus hinted after the match that he had played his last game for the Dutch heavyweights, while describing West Ham as a “great club” when asked specifically about the Hammers.

In an update provided late on Thursday [25 August, 23:29] via Sky Sports’ transfer blog, Sheth stated a transfer could be finalised in the coming days.

“West Ham are in talks to finalise a deal for the midfielder in a deal worth £38 million,” Sheth said.

“It’s hoped a deal can be fully agreed upon by the weekend.

“Personal terms on a five-year deal—with the option of a further 12 months—have been agreed in principle.”

    Great signing

After a prolonged pursuit, West Ham appears to have secured one of their primary targets in Kudus.

The timing of the agreement is fortunate for the Hammers, as it predates Kudus’ impressive hat-trick against Ludogorets.

Otherwise, the transfer fee might have soared past £40 million.

Kudus has continued his fine form from the previous season, registering four goals and an assist in just three appearances for Ajax. This trend underscores his continual improvement.

Given the substantial fee involved and the heightened excitement among fans, the 23-year-old will face significant pressure to make a substantial impact at the London Stadium.

While David Moyes will likely attempt to smoothly integrate Kudus into the team, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on the former Nordsjaelland player when he debuts, which is expected to be against Luton Town on September 1.

Curiously, September 1 also marks the closing of the transfer window, and West Ham is hopeful of securing at least one more player before then.

With Kudus’ imminent arrival enhancing their transfer activity, United’s spending could now be categorised as ‘excellent’, having transitioned from being deemed ‘good’.

Ernest Nuamah combines elements of both Doku and Davies

French scout, Mickaël Marques has drawn parallels between Ghanaian winger Ernest Nuamah and upcoming Manchester City addition Jeremy Doku, as well as Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies.

The gifted 19-year-old is on the brink of being revealed as the latest acquisition for Olympique Lyonnais, having reached an agreement to join the renowned French club from FC Nordsjaelland.

Having observed the player for a considerable period, Marques is of the opinion that Lyon is securing a player with the capacity to evolve into one of the globe’s premier talents.

“In fact, it’s a mix between Doku and Davies if we had to compare him,” said Marques, as quoted by Eurosport.

“He is a player who is very powerful physically, with a very tanked upper body, which allows him to hold the shock in the duels. He makes a difference with his explosiveness.

“He really has crazy support, with and without the ball. A call-against-call on his part can leave anyone on the spot.

“And with the ball, he takes advantage of his motor skills to infiltrate small spaces; he fixes, attracts the attention of the defence, and frees up spaces for others.

“And, often, he manages to get by. He is also very fast. Against Viborg, a stat came out: Nuamah had been flashed at 36 km/h.I think that already puts him among the three or five fastest players in L1.”

Nuamah arrives in France as the best player from the Danish League last season.

Amid increasing transfer speculation concerning Mohammed Kudus, the Ghanaian talent has provided captivating revelations regarding his possible exit from Ajax.

After his standout performance on Thursday, scoring a hat-trick against Ludogorets, Kudus was asked about his feelings towards leaving Ajax.

He responded, “I answer that when everything is official.”

The ongoing negotiations have been enveloped in suspense due to Kudus’ recent statement, leaving supporters in eager anticipation of the final resolution.

Amid strong ties with West Ham United, Kudus’ remarks hint at the impending conclusion of his chapter with Ajax.

The midfielder’s exceptional performances have garnered substantial attention, prompting West Ham United’s pursuit for his talents.

With reports suggesting a mutual agreement between the Premier League club and Ajax for his transfer, Kudus’ transition to the English top-tier league seems imminent.

Kudus’ venture with Ajax, which commenced in 2020 following his move from Nordsjaelland, has been defined by outstanding displays and notable contributions to the squad.

His recent hat-trick against Ludogorets stands as a testament to his prowess and influence on the field.

While Kudus’ departure from Ajax seems to be on the horizon, the destination remains a topic of intrigue. The personal terms for the 23-year-old have been sorted, indicating his readiness to ink a five-year contract with the potential for an additional sixth year at West Ham United.

FIFA begins disciplinary actions against president of the Spanish Football Association president after ‘uncalled for kiss

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has started disciplinary actions against Luis Rubiales (age 46), who serves as the president of the Spanish Football Association.

This follows his spontaneous kiss directed at Jenni Hermoso (age 33), a champion of the Women’s World Cup. The soccer governing body made this announcement on Thursday.

The incident occurred during the medal presentation ceremony after the Spanish team’s 1-0 victory over England in the final match on Sunday.

This act caused a significant outcry both within and outside of Spain. Jenni Hermoso herself expressed her views, stating that such actions should not be allowed to pass without consequences.

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee informed Luis Rubiales, President of the Spanish Football Association, today that it is opening disciplinary proceedings against him based on the events that occurred during the final of the Women’s World Cup,” it said in a statement.

“The events may constitute violations of Article 13 Paragraphs 1 and 2 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.”

Article 13 in the code deals with “offensive behaviour” of players and officials, particularly “violating the basic rules of decent conduct” and “behaving in a way that brings the sport into disrepute”.

Rubiales, who initially called his critics “idiots”, issued a video apology late on Monday, but it failed to quell the uproar.

Acting Second Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz called for Rubiales’ resignation because “without any doubt (he) attacked a woman“.

Spain’s women’s football league, Liga F, called for Rubiales to be dismissed and said it had lodged a complaint with the president of the National Sports Council (CSD) over his “very serious actions and behaviour.”.

Hermoso, who said after the final that she did not enjoy Rubiales’ kiss, added on Wednesday that her union, FUTPRO, and her agency, TMJ, were defending her interests in the matter.

“We are working to ensure that acts such as those we have seen never go unpunished, that they are sanctioned and that exemplary measures are adopted to protect women footballers from actions that we believe are unacceptable,” she said.

The African tribe that welcomes visitors with free sex – Wode Maya shares experience

Africans have gained a reputation for their remarkable hospitality. Several tribes will welcome their visitors based on their distinct cultures.

The Himba tribe, a tribe that lies in the heart of Northern Namibia, has an interesting way of welcoming its visitors and “making them feel good.”

They are often seen living without clothes on.

Prominent Ghanaian YouTuber, Wode Maya, has shed light on a unique African tribe that has distinctive customs related to bathing and relationships.

Intriguingly, the Himba tribe has distinctive bathing practises, forgoing water and instead using red butter and oil for their daily baths. What sets them apart even more is their approach to interpersonal relationships, particularly with visitors.

Upon the arrival of a guest, the Himba tribe showcases their hospitality through a practise known as ‘Okujepisa Omukazendu.’ In this intriguing tradition, a man expresses his approval and delight at the guest’s presence by bestowing upon them a unique treatment.

During this gesture, the man offers his wife to the guest for the night, while he himself either sleeps separately indoors or even outdoors.

This practise is rooted in their cultural customs and is seen as a way to foster camaraderie and hospitality among the tribe members.

“When you come here as a visitor and you have no place to sleep and I have more than a wife, I can tell my wife that my cousin has arrived and we will prepare her for him.

“They will have a full room to themselves. We give our wives to our visitors and that’s our culture. That’s how good we treat our visitors,” an inhabitant told Wode Maya.

The Himba tribe is also feared to be witches and this is a result of their strange lifestyle.

“They are feared because of the witchcraft they have been associated with. If you meet them on the streets and they ask for any of your belongings, don’t fight them; just give them out. They are just terrible. Our parents, and neighbours have long told us these stories before they were realised.

  • Chelsea needs two more players before close of transfer window – Pochettino

Chelsea needs two more players before close of transfer window – Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Chelsea is aiming to secure at least two more signings before the transfer window closes, as he expresses frustration over the club’s “unfortunate luck” with injuries.

Despite already investing over £320 million ($404 million) this summer, Pochettino believes there’s a need for further reinforcements due to the growing list of injured players. Ahead of their Premier League home game against Luton, the team is facing the absence of nine players.

Adding to this, Mykhailo Mudryk sustained a minor injury during training this week, and Carney Chukwuemeka recently underwent knee surgery, projecting a six-week recovery period. Although new signing Romeo Lavia is fit, he won’t debut for a few weeks while he works on match fitness.

Given the current situation, there’s a heightened determination to bolster the squad by September 1. Among the expected additions, New England Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic is set to undergo a medical before his anticipated £14 million transfer. Chelsea is also exploring potential moves for Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest and Folarin Balogun, the United States international from Arsenal.

“We need at least one keeper,” Pochettino said on Thursday. “We have very talented young keepers, but they need time. We need more and then we were talking about one offensive player with the right profile.

“If we can add the right profile, yes, but not to bring players so we can add one more. We don’t want to stop the evolution of some young guys, Broja, Nkunku. Working hard but not taking a decision because we need someone. These two areas, we may need some players.

“We are trying to find the right profile. The most important thing is the profile of the player we need to add to the squad so it won’t be a problem and they can be compatible. That is why it is not easy but yes, we are trying to do something.

“It is open, the transfer window is open, and the club is working, and yes, some players are rumoured to be with the club, maybe true or not, we will inform you when something happens.”

Pochettino believes there is no overarching reason why Chelsea have suffered so many fitness problems.

Wesley Fofana, Christopher Nkunku, and Armando Broja have all sustained serious knee injuries — the latter in December prior to Pochettino’s arrival.

Benoit Badiashile and Marcus Bettinelli were also injured last season and are yet to return, while Trevoh Chalobah was injured in pre-season and Reece James suffered a hamstring problem in training.

“Many of them are bad luck,” continued Pochettino. “Nkunku and Carney or Fofana. How can you control it? It’s not about training or training hard or less or too much or methodology. It sometimes happens.

“In some others, many factors can influence. It’s difficult to talk in general because situations are different. Also the past. Many factors are there.

“We need to talk about Carney, we need to talk about Broja, about Mudyrk, and explain why but it is difficult to explain why. In general you can talk about bad luck or bad training session, many factors can influence it. For sure, it is bad luck in Carney, Broja, Fofana, and Nkunku.”

Pochettino also insisted he is “relaxed” about Romelu Lukaku’s uncertain future, despite still not having talked to the striker since becoming head coach on July 1.

Chelsea want to offload Lukaku but are yet to receive a satisfactory offer from Juventus — which is thought to be the Belgian striker’s preferred destination after rejecting interest from the Saudi Pro League.

  • Man City confirms Aymeric Laporte’s departure to Al-Nassr

Man City confirms Aymeric Laporte’s departure to Al-Nassr

Aymeric Laporte’s departure from Manchester City to join Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League has been officially confirmed by the club. The defender, after a successful six-season stint with the treble-winning side, is making a move to Al-Nassr on a permanent basis.

The transfer involved a £23.5 million ($30 million) fee, and Laporte will be joining former rivals Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane, who were previously associated with Manchester United and Liverpool, respectively.

Laporte had already bid farewell to the Manchester City fans.

Laporte’s journey with Manchester City began in January 2018 when he was signed from Athletic Club for a then club record fee of £57 million ($72 million).

Over the course of his time with the team, he participated in 180 matches and contributed to securing 13 major trophies under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola.

Despite his valuable contributions, Laporte’s involvement waned in the past year, playing only 24 matches across various competitions as Manchester City achieved a treble. Reports from CBS indicate that Laporte is set to receive a substantial weekly salary of approximately £400,000 ($505,000).

“I am proud to have represented Manchester City over the last six seasons. When I first joined, I was excited about the prospect of winning trophies.

However, I could not have imagined the success we would go on to achieve together,” Laporte told the city’s official website.

“I would like to thank the coaches, my teammates, and of course the brilliant City fans for all of their support throughout my time in Manchester.  I will always be a City fan, and I look forward to seeing you all again.”

The Premier League champions visit Sheffield United in their next game on Sunday. Al-Nassr face Al Fateh in the Saudi Pro League on Friday.

Prominent Nigerian chef and entrepreneur, Hilda Effiong Baci, has opened up about the difficulties she has encountered due to a specific stereotype.

The holder of a Guinness World Record talked about the common challenges that women, including herself, often confront due to certain misconceptions.

Hilda shared these insights in a private conversation with influencer and former Big Brother Naija housemate, Tacha.

“For instance, girls like us look very cute, and we’re putting in the work and making money, but most people decide to be blind to that and raise all sorts of claims, especially about our source of money. Do you get stereotyped?”

Hilda answered by sharing her own encounters with stereotypes.

She said: “Oh yes. All my life. I have been stereotyped all my life. More now. More now than before. I remember a particular award where I was like…they didn’t think that I had, you know, much to offer. I don’t know if that makes any sense.”

Asamoah Gyan goes ‘gaga’ over his mention in Burna Boy’s new song

Former captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, has responded to the recently released song by Burna Boy, featuring British rapper Dave.

The track, which was unveiled on Tuesday, includes a reference to the legendary Ghanaian footballer by Dave, who incorporated his name into the song’s melodic rap.

The song, titled “Cheat on Me,” is part of Burna Boy’s upcoming album, scheduled for release on August 25th. It’s anticipated to become a popular hit.

“I’m Asamoah Gyan, the way I hit the bar,” said Dave, referring to the ex-footballer’s 2010 World Cup penalty against Uruguay.

Gyan took to social media to share his reaction, using a fire emoji to express his endorsement of the song’s popularity.

The UK rapper is recognised for skillfully incorporating football references into his music, as previously observed with players such as Manchester United’s Anthony Martial and Aaron Wan Bissaka.

This marks Burna Boy and Dave’s second collaboration, following their successful global hit “Location.”

Meanwhile, Gyan’s passion for music is also well-known, as he has collaborated with various Ghanaian artists, including reggae-dancehall star Stonebwoy.

At 37 years old, Gyan recently retired from professional football in June, concluding a distinguished career that spanned over two decades, as reported by the BBC.

  • LilWin backs 10% betting tax, promises to increase to 60% if he becomes president

LilWin backs 10% betting tax, promises to increase to 60% if he becomes president

Kumawood actor and musician Kwadwo Nkansah, professionally known as LilWin, has expressed his view that if he were the president, he would have implemented policies to generate employment opportunities and significantly raise the betting tax from 10% to 60%.

On August 8, 2023, the Government of Ghana introduced a new regulation that enforces a 10% tax on winnings from betting and lotteries.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) clarified that this withholding tax would be automatically deducted at the point of prize distribution for all gaming, betting, and lottery victories.

However, the implementation of this new measure sparked widespread criticism from the public, particularly the youth, who accused the government of disregarding their concerns.

During an interview on Kumasi-based radio station Silver FM, LilWin shared his perspective on the tax. He expressed that if he were in a position of power, he would raise the tax rate significantly to approximately 60%, while also striving to generate ample employment opportunities for the country’s youth.

“The betting tax is actually not a bad idea. If I were the president, I would create lots of jobs, to the extent that even the companies won’t be able to find workers. Then, I would increase the betting tax to 60%, so if someone chooses not to work and prefers to stake bets, he would gain very little; so if he wins 100 cedis, he will gain only 40 cedis,” LilWin said.

The actor, however, acknowledged that due to the current economic situation in the country, the betting tax should have been low but gradually increased as and when things got better.

“Currently, we know there are no jobs, which pushes young men to go into betting. What I would do is still set the betting tax, but set it very low, at about 2%, then slowly increase it to 5% and then 10%. By then, there will be enough jobs for the boys,” he added.

Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun settles on joining Monaco

Folarin Balogun seems to be on the verge of departing Arsenal, as Monaco is reportedly nearing a deal for the American international striker.

The 22-year-old forward has garnered interest from clubs across Europe during the ongoing transfer window, with teams from England, France, Italy, and Germany all expressing admiration for him.

While no agreement has been finalised, Arsenal has held out for a transfer fee surpassing £40 million ($51 million).

According to Sky Sports, Monaco is poised to formulate an offer that meets Arsenal’s requirements, and they have already reached a preliminary agreement with Balogun regarding personal terms.

If this deal materialises, it will mark a return to French football for the USMNT star, who had an impressive loan stint at Ligue 1’s Reims last season, scoring 21 goals.

Further discussions are scheduled between Monaco and Arsenal to establish a payment structure. With Balogun’s eagerness to secure a move and secure consistent first-team opportunities in the 2023–24 season, it’s anticipated that a compromise will be reached before the summer transfer window closes.

Although Balogun’s contract with Arsenal extends until 2025, he faces competition for playing time in North London from players like Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah, indicating that a move during the current window is likely.

World Athletics Championships 2023: Ghana pulls out of men’s 4x100m relay

Ghana Athletics has formally declared the men’s 4x100m relay team’s withdrawal from the ongoing 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

This choice is a direct outcome of injuries suffered by James Dadzie and Joseph Paul Amoah, two members of the relay team, during the 200-meter heats.

The injuries were of a considerable nature, requiring immediate medical intervention.

In a statement, Ghana Athletics expressed their deep regret regarding the situation and emphasised their priority on safeguarding the health and well-being of the athletes.

The statement read: “Unfortunately, two of the five athletes on the relay, James Dadzie and Joseph Paul Amoah, sustained injuries during the 200-meter heats today, August 23, 2023, that require urgent medical care.”

James Dadzie experienced a hamstring injury about 80 metres into the race, resulting in a grade II tear in the biceps femoris muscle of his left hamstring.

On the other hand, Joseph Paul Amoah encountered sudden pain in the lateral front side of his right foot, accompanied by a pop sensation, after running a strong curve in the 200m.

An x-ray scan subsequently revealed a small fracture at the base of his right big toe.

The statement further mentioned the collaboration with the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, in making the decision.

“In consultation with the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, GA firmly believes that it’s in the best interest and greater good of James and Joseph’s careers to discontinue participation in the championships given the circumstances and to shift focus to support options for treatment.”

Reversal of fortune? See how ex-Ghana keeper Memunatu Sulemana now resides in wooden-kiosk

Former Ghana women’s national team goalkeeper Memunatu Sulemana, is facing a heartbreaking situation as she currently resides in a makeshift wooden kiosk in Kaneshie, a suburb of Accra, Ghana.

Memunatu Sulemana was a prominent figure in Ghana’s women’s football golden era, achieving success on the African continent and representing her country in World Cup tournaments.

She was a member of Ghana’s inaugural team to compete at the FIFA World Cup held in the United States in 1999, and she continued to participate in the 2003 and 2007 tournaments held in the United States and China, respectively.

During her career, Sulemana played alongside notable players such as Adjoa Bayor, Alerta Sackey, and Mercy Tagoe Quarcoo, among others.

She played for Post Ladies in Ghana and also played for Pelican Stars in Nigeria’s Women’s Premier League at the club level.

Despite her accomplished football career, Sulemana’s current living conditions are dire. She now resides in a makeshift structure composed partly of wood and an old advertising banner.

This arrangement offers minimal protection, especially during the rainy season.

While some of her contemporaries have transitioned into different professions after retiring from football, the 45-year-old Sulemana is grappling with severe poverty.

In an exclusive interview with Original TV, Sulemana candidly discussed her life’s challenges. Despite earning some income from her football career, a substantial portion of her earnings went towards caring for her grandmother, who battled diabetes and required medical attention.

Until recently, Memunatu Sulemana served as the goalkeeper’s trainer for the Ghanaian national youth team, the Black Maidens.

Nottingham Forest enters race for Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi

Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest has emerged as a leading contender to secure the services of Chelsea’s winger, Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The player’s future with his current London-based club has been uncertain.

Hudson-Odoi was on the verge of a transfer to Fulham in the ongoing transfer window; however, the move encountered obstacles, creating an opportunity for other clubs to enter the fray.

Serie A side Lazio from Italy has shown interest in the talented forward, yet they will face competition from Nottingham Forest, a fellow Premier League team, as the latter strives to solidify their position in the top tier during the ongoing season.

At 22 years of age, Hudson-Odoi has faced challenges related to injuries and a decline in form. Consequently, Chelsea is seeking to offload him.

Despite a promising initial period at Chelsea, during which the club rejected enticing offers from Bayern Munich, the English-born Ghanaian player has not lived up to expectations.

In the previous season, he had a loan stint with Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga, aimed at fostering his development and preparing him for a return to Chelsea’s primary squad.

However, it appears that Hudson-Odoi may not align with the requirements of the current manager, Mauricio Pochettino.

  • Micah Richards hits out at Bruno Fernandes for ill and pathetic treatment of team-mate Facundo Pellistri

Micah Richards hits out at Bruno Fernandes for ill and pathetic treatment of team-mate Facundo Pellistri

Micah Richards has strongly criticised Bruno Fernandes for what he deemed a “pathetic” treatment of his fellow Manchester United teammate Facundo Pellistri.

At the commencement of this season, the Portuguese midfielder was entrusted with the captain’s armband by Erik ten Hag, following Harry Maguire’s removal from the role of club captain.

However, the Red Devils have encountered a lackluster beginning to the season with Fernandes at the helm. Despite their 1-0 victory over Wolves, their performance took a hit as they suffered a 2-0 defeat in their subsequent match against Tottenham.

During the match against Tottenham, tensions escalated among the United players, leading skipper Fernandes to admonish the young player Pellistri after a promising attack was abruptly halted.

Manchester City legend Richards hit out at Fernandes on The Rest Is Football podcast for losing his cool and stated: “It’s getting embarrassing now.

The young lad Pellistri comes on, Fernandes is trying to get his team playing, and I totally understand why he’s frustrated.
Pellistri made a run; Fernandes didn’t see him, so he made a different run, but because he wasn’t where [Fernandes] wanted him to be, he’s going off at Pellistri.

“It’s every time. I saw an interview with him the other day, and he said he needs to be emotional when he performs because it makes him play better. But I feel like his body language on the pitch is disturbing the rest of the team, and it’s just not a good look at all. It’s pathetic at times.”

Fernandes had previously faced criticism for his demeanour, particularly when the team was facing adversity. Graeme Souness, a Liverpool legend, strongly rebuked the player and labelled his conduct as “unacceptable.”

This assessment stems from Fernandes’ display of frustration on the field during a Premier League fixture last season against Liverpool, where United suffered a resounding 7-0 defeat after initially trailing 3-0.

Fernandes is set to return to action as Manchester United prepares to face Nottingham Forest on Saturday in a Premier League match at Old Trafford.

  • Listen when I’m talking- Shatta Wale ‘shuts’ Serwaa Amihere during twitter space

Listen when I’m talking- Shatta Wale ‘shuts’ Serwaa Amihere during twitter space

Tensions quickly mounted in a Twitter space hosted by Serwaa Amihere, with Shatta Wale, one of the speakers, and approximately 5,000 listeners. Their conversation shifted from showbiz industry matters to Shatta Wale’s approach to handling criticism from Twitter users.

When the topic of Shatta Wale frequently blocking people who criticise him on social media came up, the dancehall artist became visibly upset and expressed his displeasure to the host.

When the topic of Shatta Wale frequently blocking people who criticise him on social media came up, the dancehall artist became visibly upset and expressed his displeasure to the host.

“You Serwaa, I don’t think when people insult you, you will like the person. You will block the person for the rest of your life. They are putting up confusion about me all the time, the blogs are always talking about me anyway.

“I was at the other side, teaching them that I can come to them at anytime so we can resolve our differences,” Shatta retorted

After Shatta’s comments, Serwaa became aware that he had reversed his position by admitting to blocking individuals on Twitter.

This shift was evident in his following statement, where he mentioned his intentions to organise meetings and address matters with those who criticise him.

Confused by his statements, Serwaa asked: “Why are you contradicting yourself? Why”

Shatta responded, “What do you mean by I am contradicting myself?”

Serwaa added, “Earlier I asked you about blocking people who share their opinions about you, and you said yes. People who haven’t experienced anything cannot teach you anything, and that is why you have blocked them. So why this now?”

Shatta, who got infuriated by Serwaa’s utterances, fumed, “If you say I contradict myself, what do you mean by that? I can cut the phone off and go to sleep. You know why? Because I am on another level. I want you to understand me clearly when I am talking! Serwaa listen!

    A displeased Serwaa responded,

Shatta Wale hold on. You are speaking not just to me but to 5,000 other people. Don’t raise your voice at me! You are raising your voice at me; clam down!”

Shatta Wale: “I am not raising my voice; you are the one saying I am contradicting myself.”

Serwaa: Okay, is it the word you don’t understand or you don’t like the word.”
