GMA warns of potential service withdrawal from Bimbilla Hospital over medical superintendent assault

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has strongly criticized the assault on the medical superintendent of Bimbilla Hospital and has cautioned that medical services might be withdrawn if the safety of their members is not ensured.

This stern warning comes in the aftermath of an incident where the medical superintendent of Bimbilla Hospital, Adam Barhama, was forcefully removed from his office by enraged youth who protested against him.

The protesters demanded that both he and the hospital’s accountant and administrator vacate the premises.

To guarantee their safety, the police provided an escort for the three individuals to Yendi.

Despite returning to the hospital on the same day, the medical superintendent faced another attempt by the youth to expel him.

In response to the situation, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nanumba North, Abdulai Yaqoub, has appealed for calm and urged the youth to exercise restraint.

In response to the events unfolding at the hospital, the GMA issued a statement expressing their stance: “The GMA vehemently denounces the unlawful actions of the local youth, which have jeopardised the safety of the Medical Superintendent, other staff members, and the security of hospital property.

The GMA is actively observing the situation at the facility and will provide suitable guidance to our members in due course. It is essential to underscore that if the continued threats and actions endangering lives and assets persist.

“We will be left with no choice but to ensure that no doctor returns to the facility either now or in the foreseeable future since their safety cannot be guaranteed”.

Bimbilla Hospital, situated in the Nanumba North Municipality within the Northern Region, has been prominently featured in recent news.

Due to non-payment of bills totaling over GH240,000, the hospital’s water supply was disconnected. As a result, nurses at the hospital initiated a sit-down strike, causing patients to be redirected to alternative medical facilities.

The local youth reacted strongly to the situation and staged demonstrations against the hospital’s management.

Their grievances centred primarily on allegations of mismanagement against the medical superintendent.

You cannot blame BoG for being forced into DDEP – John Kwakye

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), John Kwakye, says the Bank of Ghana (BoG) cannot be faulted for being forced into the government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), which resulted in the central bank’s 2022 financial loss.

He admitted that the BoG should be blamed for over-lending to the government, but insisted that the central bank cannot be faulted for taking a “haircut.”

The BoG recorded a staggering loss of GH60.8 billion within the 2022 fiscal year.

The Minority in Parliament has on a number of occasions called on the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, and his deputies to resign for being reckless in the management of the central bank.

Speaking on the Point of View on Citi TV, hosted by Bernard Avle, the Director of Research at IEA, he stated, “As central bankers, financing the government’s deficit is the most inflationary thing to do. That is why the central banks set lending limits for their governments.

“What has happened in our case [BoG] is that it looks like BoG went far beyond the sealing Act of last year’s revenue of 5%. We are told that they lent almost GH44 billion, and that is the magnitude. Once you do that, you are already getting yourself into serious trouble.”

“BoG over-lent to the government, and then you bring in this DDEP, which qualifies us for the IMF programme, and the IMF compels BoG to be part of it. Out of the GH60.8 billion loss they have declared, GH53.1 billion is coming directly from DDEP. So the question is, will you fault them for that?

“We can fault them for over-lending to the government; that is the problem, but why they were being forced to be part of the DDEP is also another. That one, you can’t fault them for that”.

He further took a dig at the IMF for forcing the BoG to be part of the DDEP in order to secure the $3 billion bailout.

“I also have a problem, why did the IMF force our central bank to be part of the DDEP? Just because they wanted us to meet the requirement for the ECF”.

According to him, the government should rather be blamed for the loss incurred by the BoG for failing to cut down on its expenditure.

“The blame, I think, should be at all various levels, first the government for causing all these deficits, which require some financing. We have been calling on the government to try to live within its means,”.

  • Hear the words of Otumfuo before he dethroned his childhood friend

Hear the words of Otumfuo before he dethroned his childhood friend

The King of the Ashanti people, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has dethroned one of his subordinate chiefs due to his disregard for a ruling made in a land dispute between the chief and another party.

A video posted on the Royal Palace MultiMedia YouTube page captures the Gyaasefuor presenting the now dethroned Nkonsonhene, Nana Osei Tiri II, before the Asanteman Council assembly.

During the proceedings, the accusers outlined their claim that despite Otumfuo’s decision that a disputed land parcel should remain off-limits for both parties, the Nkonsonhene had violated this ruling by initiating development on the land.

Otumfuo had imposed a ban on access to the land and summoned the involved parties to present their plans for a final verdict, but Nana Osei Tiri II disregarded this directive.

The King’s spokesperson, who cross-examined the Nkonsonhene, established that the subchief had engaged in inappropriate behavior.

The Nkonsonhene’s attempts to clarify his actions were deemed insufficient, ultimately leading to the decision to strip him of his position.

When addressing the matter, Otumfuo stated that the Nkonsonhene had neglected his responsibilities for a considerable period and had failed to fulfill fundamental duties associated with his role.

He mentioned his prior friendship with the Nkonsonhene during their childhood as a contributing factor in his disappointment, which led to his decision to remove him from his position.

“Kyidonhene is available but you were misconducting yourself. When Kyeame Duah was alive, I told you to go and solve the issues, he died long before Bonsu came in, till date you are litigating over a land. I am right?

“You came to meet Atenehene. I have overlooked you for too long. I was here with you since childhood and we are serving together, so you have become pompous. Yaw Duah, I have been here with you for long in service so you have become ungovernable.

“You are unable to carry out basic rites, you haven’t seen your stool for years now …. Today this day, you are destooled.”

Shatta and I are better of as friends so God found a way to end our relationship – Michy

In hindsight, Michy believes that it was a higher power that orchestrated her separation from her ex-fiancé, Shatta Wale.

The media personality shared her thoughts during a conversation with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM, a radio station in Accra, on the Showbiz A to Z program on Saturday, August 12, 2023.

Dadzie had brought up an interview that Michy had given to Delay in which she mentioned that her relationship with Reggae/Dancehall artist Shatta Wale would be challenging to replicate with any other man.

She described their dynamic as being more akin to best friends, with Shatta Wale occupying a role similar to that of a brother.

“I won’t take those words back, though,” Michy promptly reacted.

She explained that she “always told him we’re better of best friends, we’re better of business partners than dating, and God has found a way, no matter how difficult that way came through or by, to bring us back to what we’re supposed to be”.

Michy added that in the Delay interview, she remembers saying, “If I were a man, I’d like to dress and look like” Wale, with whom she has a son.

Dadzie remarked that it shows how fond she is of her former boyfriend.

“Fond is the word,” Michy animatedly reacted. “And also, it is difficult to create another relationship like that.”

Michy, formerly Shatta Michy, started to date Shatta Wale when she was 17 years old, going on to be 18 in a “few months”.

Dadzie asked her if she had ever been in love.

“I feel I have [fallen in love before] but I was young,” she answered.

However, she pensively revealed that: “From my perception today, I can say it was more [of] a duty of care and probably lust—a lot of lust.”

Jeffrey Schlupp praises Crystal Palace for their good win over Sheffield United

Ghanaian midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp has lauded Crystal Palace’s victorious start to the Premier League season with a 1-0 triumph over Sheffield United on Saturday.

Fellow countryman Jordan Ayew played a pivotal role by providing the assist for Odsonne Édouard, who netted the sole goal shortly after halftime.

Following the match, Schlupp, who played the entire game, took to Instagram to express his satisfaction, stating, “A good win to start the new season.”

Despite maintaining control of possession and the considerable threat posed by Eberechi Eze, Crystal Palace found it challenging to truly test Wes Foderingham, Sheffield United’s goalkeeper.

Jordan Ayew appeared to have scored in the first half, but his header was disallowed due to being in an offside position.

Sheffield United held their ground effectively until just five minutes into the second half, when their defensive line was breached.

Ayew’s quick footwork earned him space on the right, allowing him to deliver a powerful ball across the goal, which Odsonne Édouard calmly converted.

Falling behind failed to ignite a response from Paul Heckingbottom’s team, as Crystal Palace continued to mount pressure.

Édouard found the net again, only for his effort to be invalidated for offside, while Jeffrey Schlupp forced Wes Foderingham into making an impressive save.

Rather than merely safeguarding their narrow one-goal lead, Crystal Palace maintained a firm grip on possession to thwart any attempts by the hosts.

Osula had a chance for Sheffield United but ended up shooting into the side-netting, leaving them unable to break through as Crystal Palace held on to secure the victory.

Video: Sadio Mane thriving on Saudi soil as he scores four minutes into Saudi Pro League debut for Al-Nassr

Sadio Mane had an exceptional beginning in the Saudi Pro League, scoring a goal just four minutes into the match against former Liverpool teammates Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson, who were playing for Liverpool legends.

The goal showcased Mane’s trademark style, as he accelerated up the field, temporarily lost and then regained possession, and ultimately slotted home a close-range shot from a right-wing cross.

This gave Al-Nassr a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

The match started positively for the former Liverpool player, but for two beloved figures of Anfield, manager Steven Gerrard and midfielder Jordan Henderson, who now represented Al-Ettifaq, it was a contrasting experience filled with disappointment.

They could only watch in frustration as a familiar face put them at a deficit.

At halftime, Al-Nassr, without Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks, held a 1-0 lead.

‘Messi effect’ causes semi-final ticket value hike but Philadelphia Union boss Jim Curtin urges fans to hold on

In anticipation of their upcoming semifinal match against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, Jim Curtin, the manager of the Philadelphia Union, earnestly appealed to supporters not to part with their tickets.

Following a triumphant 2-1 win over Liga MX team Queretaro in the League Cup quarterfinals, Curtin, at the helm of Union, urged fans to retain their tickets despite the potential resale allure in the secondary market.

With the build-up to Tuesday night’s semifinal showdown, ticket prices have surged to as much as $1500 on the MLS ticketing platform SeatGeek.

“Please don’t sell your tickets, no matter how much money they’re offering for them, please,” he said at a press conference.

Curtin and the Union are hoping to retain their home-stadium advantage as the red-hot Argentine and Inter Miami come to town. Messi fans may have other plans in mind, though.

The Eastern Conference heavyweights will play host to a reinvented Inter Miami side under Tata Martino.

  • Beşiktaş signs ex Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on free transfer

Beşiktaş signs ex Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on free transfer

Beşiktaş has secured the services of English footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, aged 29, on a three-year deal through a free transfer, subsequent to the conclusion of his contract with Liverpool.

The announcement was made by the Turkish Super Lig club on Monday.

During the previous season, Oxlade-Chamberlain faced challenges in gaining sufficient playing time, participating in only 13 matches for his former team, based in Merseyside.

His association with Liverpool began in 2017, transitioning from Arsenal.

Over his tenure, he played in a total of 146 games for the club and contributed 18 goals.

Besiktas disclosed that they will be compensating Oxlade-Chamberlain with an annual sum of €2.5 million throughout the entirety of the three-year agreement.

Having earned 35 international caps and netted seven goals for his national team, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s journey with the England squad began in 2012.

  • Kylian Mbappe still playing Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid for fools: Superstar striker is the most powerful player in the world

Kylian Mbappe still playing Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid for fools: Superstar striker is the most powerful player in the world

The Frenchman doesn’t just have two elite clubs dancing to his own tune – he also has an incredible level of control over the entire transfer market

Unlike nearly everyone else connected with Paris Saint-Germain, Kylian Mbappe was in good spirits during Saturday’s Ligue 1 clash with Lorient.

While those seated around him at Parc des Princes were bitterly frustrated watching the champions try – and fail – to break down the team that finished 10th last season, Mbappe was spotted several times laughing and joking with new PSG signing Ousmane Dembele. And why not? The game did nothing other than prove just how important he is to PSG.

The day before, Luis Enrique had stated that he was still hoping to see an amicable resolution to Mbappe’s contract stand-off with Nasser Al-Khelaifi & Co., but the new coach pointedly added: “The philosophy of this club is very clear: that the club is above everything, and I share it 100 percent.”

Undoubtedly admirable and heartfelt sentiments on the part of Luis Enrique – but simply not applicable in this case.

The events of the last few days have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that Kylian Mbappe is bigger than Paris Saint-Germain. Right now, in fact, he’s probably the most powerful player in the world.

Acutely aware of his own worth
The morning after being given what must have felt like a terrifying glimpse of a future without Mbappe, PSG announced that the France captain had been welcomed back into the fold with open arms.

To casual observers, that would have looked like a remarkable turn of events. PSG, remember, had seemingly stood up to Mbappe at long last. When a letter confirming his intention to leave the club in 2024 was mysteriously – and conveniently – leaked to the press, Al-Khelaifi insisted that Mbappe would have to find himself a new club before the close of the transfer window. PSG understandably had no intention of losing the world’s most valuable player on a free transfer next summer.

Things turned so toxic that PSG rather pettily took down Mbappe posters in and around their stadium, stopped selling his shirt in the club shop, while also resorting to the mother of all guilt trips by claiming that if Mbappe left for nothing, it would result in a “wave of redundancies”.

They even accepted an offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal for Mbappe, in an attempt to force his hand. Mbappe, though, refused to even discuss the transfer. Why? Because he can.

He’s the man in demand, the player holding all the aces here – and he knows it. This is a young, generational talent who is acutely aware of his own worth, particularly to PSG.

    mbappe Al Khelaifi(C)Getty Images

    ‘Cornerstrone of the club’s project’
Al-Khelaifi made Mbappe “the cornerstone of the club’s project” last year for a reason. They are utterly dependent upon him, and not from a sporting perspective. His goals can be replaced.

As former sporting director Leonardo pointed out, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Chelsea have all won the Champions League since Mbappe joined PSG – so it is possible to win the trophy without him.

But PSG’s superstar-obsessed owners clearly do not believe that is possible for a club with no competition in France to maintain relevance on the global stage without a player of Mbappe’s stature – one that is immensely popular with young fans from every background – and certainly not at this moment in time.

With Lionel Messi and Neymar having left this summer, Mbappe is their one remaining icon – and the one most important to their brand. They could build a better, more cohesive and functioning team with the money made from selling Mbappe, one capable of finally realising their dream of conquering Europe, but without the World Cup winner, they would just not be as attractive a proposition in terms of marketing and commercial opportunities, or even just in terms of attracting social media followers.

Mbappe and his team know all that, which is why they could afford to simply sit tight and call PSG’s bluff.

    Making Madrid wait too
Because it’s not as if Real Madrid are going anywhere. Mbappe led Florentino Perez down the garden path last summer, and yet the Spaniard still clearly wants to sign him. He is even prepared to wait until next year to do so.

    Kylian Mbappe

Again, though, Mbappe will decide if or when he moves to Madrid. He may yet sign an extension at PSG, but if he does, it will be once again done on his terms. Indeed, do not be surprised if he manages to ‘persuade’ PSG to put a 2024 buy-out clause into the agreement – and for a fee that he knows Madrid will be willing to meet.

In that sense, Mbappe is displaying an element of control over not only his career – but also the transfer market – that we have never seen before.

He has been a little fortunate in that regard. Cristiano Ronaldo had to move to Saudi Arabia because nobody wanted him in Europe anymore. Lionel Messi was forced out of Camp Nou on account of Barcelona’s financial problems.

Mbappe, though, is in a position to do as he pleases, and while he decides what’s best for him, several other players are stuck in the departures lounge. If Mbappe stays at PSG, Madrid will simply have to sign a goalscorer this summer. And PSG, of course, would need to sign a replacement if he were to leave.

Either way, Mbappe is the potential catalyst for a chain reaction that would see a succession of forwards switch clubs.

Spineless PSG panic under the pressure
Not that he’ll care about that, of course. For now, his sole focus will be on seeing what else PSG are willing to offer him to sign a contract extension.

They bent over backwards for him last summer, while this time around they have replaced Neymar, with whom Mbappe fell out, with his France team-mate and good friend Dembele.

Carlo Ancelotti was frustrated but confident after Real Madrid lost to Barcelona

More Mbappe-approved moves yet be made at the Parc des Princes.

Of course, the club have tried to make out that a relationship that appeared broken has now been mended thanks to “very constructive, positive talks” between the two parties led to the player being “reinstat ed into first-team training” on Sunday morning. In truth, though, a desperate and spineless PSG panicked under the pressure and decided to give Mbappe everything he wanted once again.

In the era of player power, not one has more than Kylian Mbappe.

  • Australian PM joins calls for public holiday if Matildas win Women’s World Cup

Australian PM joins calls for public holiday if Matildas win Women’s World Cup

Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has thrown his support behind the idea of declaring a public holiday in the event of the national team’s victory in the Women’s World Cup.

The Matildas, who are competing in the tournament as co-hosts alongside New Zealand, have secured a place in the semi-finals following a thrilling penalty shootout triumph against France on Saturday.

Notably, goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold’s heroic performance included saving three penalty kicks after previously missing one herself.

Their upcoming match against European champions England is scheduled for Wednesday in Sydney and is anticipated to set new records for soccer viewership on Australian television.

“I’ve said that the state and territory leaders should consider it and I know that it’s received a pretty warm reception in most quarters,” Albanese said in a radio interview with state broadcaster ABC when asked if calls for a public holiday were justified.

“This is something much more than just a sporting event. This is an inspiration to young girls in particular, but also young boys.”

Due to Australia’s federal structure, the authority to establish additional public holidays resides with its individual states and territories. In light of this, Anthony Albanese mentioned that discussions regarding this matter are slated for Wednesday when he engages with regional leaders.

Chris Minns, who leads New South Wales, the nation’s most populous state, has made a commitment to declare a public holiday within a week of the final should the Matildas secure victory.

Soccer has traditionally played second fiddle to other more prominent football codes like rugby league and Australian rules in Australia. The women’s soccer game, in particular, has grappled with challenges such as sparse attendance and insufficient funding.

However, the Matildas’ participation in the World Cup has been a game-changer, with tickets for their matches selling out months ahead of time. The viewership numbers both at the stadiums and through television broadcasts have reached levels not witnessed since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

In 1983, then-Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke effectively declared a national public holiday after an Australian crew ended 132 years of US dominance of the America’s Cup sailing race, famously saying that “any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum”.

  • Be confident and fight or you leave – Erik ten Hag to Harry Maguire

In light of reports suggesting that defender Harry Maguire is on the brink of finalising a move to West Ham, manager Erik ten Hag has expressed the view that if Maguire lacks the necessary confidence to compete for his spot, he should consider departing Manchester United.

Ten Hag had earlier removed the captain’s armband from Maguire last month, primarily due to the 30-year-old’s limited involvement in the previous Premier League season, having started only eight matches.

This came as central defensive preferences leaned towards Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof.

Recent information from British media has indicated that West Ham and Maguire have reached an agreement worth £30 million ($38.01 million) for the transfer. Maguire, whom United acquired from Leicester City for a record-breaking £80 million in 2019, originally became the world’s most expensive defender.

“He has to fight for his place, and he has the abilities to be a top-class centre-back,” Ten Hag told reporters. “He is the best for England, and I assume he will be the best for us, but he has to prove it.

“When he is not confident enough to go in and fight, then he has to go. He has to make a decision. But I am happy with him… You need high-level players who are maybe not starting, but that can change.”

This unfortunate circumstance marks the third instance in which the club has had to cope with a knee-related issue.

Guler, who was acquired by Real Madrid in July from Fenerbahce, had to cut short his participation in the team’s pre-season tour in the United States due to this injury.

In addition to Guler, Real Madrid has also seen goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender Eder Militao sidelined due to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.

City’s De Bruyne to miss UEFA Super Cup clash against Sevilla over hamstring injury

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, aged 32, has been excluded from the squad for the UEFA Super Cup clash against Sevilla due to a recurring hamstring injury he sustained during the team’s season opener.

The Belgian midfielder had to exit the field in the 36th minute of Manchester City’s 3-0 victory over Burnley on Friday.

This injury follows his previous hamstring issue during the Champions League final win in June, and Pep Guardiola, the manager, has confirmed it’s a recurrence of the same ailment.

“It’s the hamstring again, same position. I don’t know (how long he will be out), it depends on the magnitude of the injury but it will be a few weeks,” Guardiola said after the game at Burnley.

Guardiola has announced a roster of 22 players for the upcoming UEFA Super Cup match scheduled for Wednesday in Athens.

The match features the victors of the previous season’s Champions League and Europa League.

Osimhen poised to sign €10 million deal with Napoli after shunning Saudi deal

Napoli’s striker, Victor Osimhen, is on the verge of prolonging his tenure with the club following promising discussions.

Reportedly, the Nigerian forward is preparing to finalize a contract extension for three years, securing his presence at Napoli until 2026.

As per Sky Sports correspondent Gianluca Di Marzio, under the terms of the new agreement, Osimhen will receive a slightly above-average €10 million annual net salary.

Earlier, Victor Osimhen declined a staggering €1 million per week offer from Saudi Arabian team Al Hilal.

Had he accepted the proposition, he could have garnered a yearly sum of €52 million from the Saudi Pro League outfit.

Hilal’s pursuit of Osimhen followed their unsuccessful attempt to secure the signing of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint Germain.

In the previous Serie A season, Victor Osimhen had a remarkable performance, emerging as the top scorer with 26 goals in 32 matches.

Mbappe’s plot allegedly forcing Neymar’s departure from PSG

Neymar Dos Santos Jr., the Brazilian superstar, is on the brink of ending his five-year tenure at Paris Saint Germain (PSG) with an impending move to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal.

As per a report from Brazilian outlet Globosport, Kylian Mbappe, the French international and World Cup champion, orchestrated a clever strategy to prompt PSG to put Neymar on the transfer market.

Allegedly, he engaged social media figures, including John Honesty (@ExJohnHoonestyy), to propagate his desire to depart the club.

The report suggests that Mbappe’s objective was to aid in Neymar’s departure from the club and have Dembele take his place.

After spending much of his summer training in isolation due to his refusal to extend his contract, Mbappe returned to full training shortly after the club announced the acquisition of Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona.

John Honesty’s account has been deactivated as Neymar’s move to Al Hilal appears to be nearing completion, and Mbappe resumed training after expressing his willingness to discuss a contract extension following Dembele’s signing.

Meanwhile, Neymar is a step away from finalising his transfer to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

During the pre-season, Paris Saint-Germain excluded Mbappe from their squad preparations after contract extension negotiations hit a snag.

French media reports indicated that PSG suspected the 24-year-old had reached an agreement to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Mbappe inked a three-year contract with PSG in the 2022 summer transfer window. The deal consists of an initial two-year term with an option for an additional year, as reported by Sky Sports.

Initially set to initiate discussions with other clubs in January 2024, after PSG failed to activate the contract extension clause, the breakdown of talks resulted in his absence from PSG’s opening match against Lorient. However, his return suggests that he is on the verge of extending his contract.

Pavard keen on joining Ten Hag’s Man Utd this summer

Bayern Munich’s defender, Benjamin Pavard, is eager to make a move to Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United during this summer transfer window.

His strong desire to join the Red Devils is evident.

However, a significant obstacle has emerged due to the current disagreement between the two clubs regarding the transfer fee, as reported by Sky Sports.

The French national, who is versatile in both right-back and centre-back positions, is nearing the end of his current contract, with just one year remaining.

His expected price tag falls within the range of £30 million ($38 million) to £35 million ($44 million).

The success of this transfer also depends on the unfolding situation involving Harry Maguire, who is presently engaged in discussions with West Ham regarding a potential move.

Bayern Munich’s plan to replace Pavard with Manchester City’s Kyle Walker has been thwarted, as Walker has opted to stay with the Premier League champions.

Manchester United has pursued alternative avenues in the transfer market, including exploring the option of signing Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice.

Discussions with Todibo’s representatives have reportedly taken place, according to the same sources.

  • Chelsea loans keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga to Real Madrid to make up for injured Courtois

Chelsea loans keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga to Real Madrid to make up for injured Courtois

The 28-year-old is set to step in for Thibaut Courtois, who sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during a training session last Thursday, leading to several months of absence.

Kepa was acquired by Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for a club record of 80 million euros.

However, he fell out of favour with the London club, which recently acquired goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Although Bayern Munich reportedly pursued Kepa, aiming to replace their injured goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Real Madrid acted swiftly to secure the deal.

Courtois’ injury poses a significant setback for Real Madrid, as they will be without a key player for the foreseeable future.

The goalkeeper is likely to make his debut later this week against Almeria as Real Madrid seek their second win of the season.

  • Ministry of Health prepares manual to tackle alcohol use disorders in Uganda

Ministry of Health prepares manual to tackle alcohol use disorders in Uganda

Similar to numerous other nations, Uganda confronts substantial issues linked to alcohol use disorders (AUDs) stemming from risky alcohol consumption. This predicament significantly affects both public health and the overall social welfare of individuals who engage in such behaviour.

As a part of an ambitious effort to address challenges related to alcohol, a group of 17 addiction treatment experts collaborated with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to organise a five-day workshop.

The primary objective of this workshop was to create a comprehensive manual that provides guidance for the screening and treatment of individuals impacted by hazardous drinking and alcohol use disorders.

At the workshop, Ministry of Health psychiatrist Dr. Kenneth Kalani Okware explained that to combat and reduce the impact of excessive alcohol consumption, it is essential to develop a comprehensive tool that will help primary health care workers deliver effective care.

“As mental health specialists, we should focus on designing a comprehensive Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) protocol that matches the needs of primary care workers.”

The manual was developed in line with the WHO SAFER (explain the abbreviation) initiative launched in 2018 at the Third UN High-Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

SAFER is a technical package of cost-effective interventions for the prevention of harmful alcohol use.

It has been developed to deliver health and development gains to meet global, regional, and national health needs, and to reduce the human suffering and pain caused by harmful alcohol use.

“The harmful use of alcohol has a devastating impact on Consumers’ health, including injuries, mental health problems, and diseases like cancer and stroke. I call on the government of Uganda to Strengthen restrictions on alcohol availability and Facilitate access to screening, brief interventions, and treatment at all levels, said Dr. Yonas Tegegn, Woldemariam, WHO Representative to Uganda.

Taking part in the workshop, Dr. Hafisa Kasule, WHO Technical Officer for Non-Communicable Diseases, revealed that “Ugandans currently consume over 12 litres of pure alcohol per year per capita.

Surprisingly, less than 50% of the population consumes alcohol, which means that the few who do drink are drinking too much, a challenge that demands immediate action,” she said.

She also stressed that tackling the pervasive problem of harmful alcohol use is essential to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3.5 on alcohol and substance abuse.

WHO’s efforts to support Uganda in the prevention and control of alcohol consumption are long-standing.

Actions to date include, among others, the development of a risk factor survey in 2013 and 2023 to determine the burden of alcohol consumption in the country; the adaptation and piloting of the Mental Health Gap Action Programme (MHGAP) intervention guide to facilitate access to alcohol use disorder services in primary health care centres.

Moving forward, WHO is in discussions with members of the Ugandan parliament to lobby for the adoption of the Alcohol Control Bill. This law will provide a legal basis for controlling the production, marketing, and consumption of alcohol in the country.

  • Liverpool reaches £60m fee for Romeo Lavia transfer – but it’s not yet over

Liverpool reaches £60m fee for Romeo Lavia transfer – but it’s not yet over

As Moises Caicedo gets ready to join Chelsea in a groundbreaking British record transfer, reports suggest that Liverpool will eventually come to an agreement with Southampton regarding Romeo Lavia’s transfer.

During the intense competition to acquire Caicedo, Liverpool presented a bid of £111 million, leading to Southampton’s young talent Lavia’s situation being somewhat overlooked.

Chelsea’s sudden surge of interest in the 19-year-old seemed to be more of a strategic move as they competed with other Premier League competitors to secure his signature.

Chelsea has now reportedly reached a £115 million deal with Brighton for Caicedo, leaving Liverpool with a more pressing need for a defensive midfielder.

Despite three prior rejected bids for Lavia, Liverpool has entered into a competition with Chelsea for the services of the Belgian international.

According to Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian, Liverpool has now reached an agreement with Southampton worth £60 million.

However, it remains to be seen whether they can convince Lavia to move to Anfield, with “indications [he] favours a move to Chelsea.”

Chelsea bid £55 million for the teenager last week, and it was previously claimed that they would look to sign both Lavia and Caicedo, though Steinberg added on Twitter that Liverpool are the only club with an agreement with Southampton.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri has corroborated Steinberg’s report, explaining that “things could develop quickly, but it’s not over yet.”

Farcically, it seems the club will now need to spend more than they would have hoped on the teenager following Chelsea‘s offer.

Liverpool had attempted to negotiate with Southampton below their £50 million price tag with bids of £37 million, £41 million, and £46 million.

That was the source of frustration among supporters, as the Reds were perceived to be haggling for a player who would have benefited from a longer bedding-in period.

While Southampton had publicly sought £50 million, there were hints that they could eventually agree a deal below that—until, it seems, the battle for Caicedo.

Not only did Liverpool show their hand with a potential British-record bid for the Ecuadorian, but in failing to sign him, they also became more vulnerable in the market.

Further developments are expected on Monday, with Liverpool undoubtedly keen to bring in their next signing as soon as possible.

Making affordable and comfortable homes out of containers – Meet CEO of ArchiDesign Concepts

In recent years, Ghanaians residing abroad have been returning to their homeland to contribute their acquired experiences—a positive trend that holds significance for Ghana’s development.

Bernice Preprah is among those who have embraced this trend. She has brought her expertise in transforming cargo containers into cost-effective luxury homes to Ghana.

As the CEO of ArchiDesign Concepts, a company she founded in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, Bernice Preprah focuses on crafting architectural designs for residential, hospitality, and corporate purposes, seamlessly blending traditional and contemporary styles.

During an interview on Zionfelix TV, the ArchiDesign Concept CEO mentioned that her decision to venture into interior design stemmed from her over a decade-long career in the corporate realm in New York, USA.

Encouragement from her husband motivated her to pursue a path in interior design and real estate that aligned with her passions.

She clarified that her work primarily encompasses design, space planning, and outfitting interior spaces.

The conversion of containers into residences is only a small facet of her business, which contributes to offering affordable housing solutions for individuals.

“Container is just a side thing that we do because it’s quick, and easy to do. It doesn’t cost a lot of money…. You can get very creative with them very quickly.

“You can do a whole container in a month, you don’t have to worry about foundation and stuff like that; so, it makes it very easy,” she said.

Bernice Preprah said that she decided to bring her expertise back home, after 26 years, when her son one day told her he was not willing to travel to Ghana because she did not.

“Actually, it was my son that made me decide to do this… he went to medical school, and he was supposed to go and do some medical work in rural areas. I asked him to come to Ghana. And he said no.

“I asked why, and he said, You don’t want to go to Ghana, why should I?’. And this kind of bothered me a little bit because both his father and I are Ghanaians,” she narrated.

  • Ghana’s inflation expected to stay above 44.7% until 2024

Ghana’s inflation expected to stay above 44.7% until 2024

The African Development Bank’s projection indicates that Ghana’s inflation rate is anticipated to remain above 44.7 percent until the year 2024.

The recently published West Africa Economic Outlook Report by the Bank also forecasts that the country’s interest rates will persistently stay above 25 percent.

The report noted that, “Within the West Africa region, inflation is projected to be highest in Ghana (45%), Nigeria (17%), Sierra Leone (27%), and the Gambia (12%).

Except for Nigeria, local currencies in the three other countries experienced double digit depreciation in 2022. This is expected to continue in the medium term.”

For the 2024 fiscal year, the AfDB maintains that Ghana’s inflation is expected to drop to about 20.4 percent while cautioning that the Bank of Ghana’s monetary policy rate could, however, hamper growth prospects.

“Therefore, amid already high policy rates (e.g., a policy rate of 18% in Nigeria, 29% in Ghana, and 19% in Sierra Leone), further rate hikes might do more harm than good to growth prospects,” the Bank said.

In order to address the ongoing economic difficulties in the nation, the AfDB highlighted several measures.

These include seeking international financial support, strengthening fiscal consolidation efforts, promoting economic diversification, and fostering growth in the private sector to stimulate the economy.

  • NDC communicator blames Ghana’s economic woes on Bawumia, Ofori Atta and Akufo-Addo

NDC communicator blames Ghana’s economic woes on Bawumia, Ofori Atta and Akufo-Addo

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team,
Solomon Anane has pointed fingers at three influential figures, attributing Ghana’s ongoing economic hardships to their actions.

Anane asserted that these individuals, despite their perceived role in exacerbating the nation’s struggles, have remained untouchable due to their close ties to President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The individuals he identified were Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the head of the economic management team, Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister of Finance, and Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Speaking on a panel discussion on Hello FM’s Akoko Abon on August 13, 2023, he emphasised that these three figures were instrumental in causing the economic challenges currently faced by Ghanaians.

“I have written something here about three specific people who are behind our struggles as Ghanaians. The first is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the head of economic management, who is one of the reasons why we, as Ghanaians, are suffering.

“The second person is the finance minister, who is in control of our country’s finances, but do not touch him, my anointed; if you touch him, trouble will follow…If Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo sacks his finance minister or Ghana’s Bank governor, he will rather sack his beloved wife and force her to leave since such people are not touched.

“Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana, is now also a member…and these three people are the source of our sorrows and struggles in our country as Ghanaians.”

Ghana is grappling with economic challenges as its national currency, the cedi, faces a tough battle against the US dollar.

To address the pressing issues at hand, the country has successfully secured a $3 billion bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The funds are intended to provide a much-needed boost to the economy and steer it back on track.

  • Enroll on GHANePS or face consequences – PPA warns entities

Enroll on GHANePS or face consequences – PPA warns entities

Deputy CEO of the Ghana Public Procurement Authority (PPA), Mr. Kwame Prempeh, has indicated that Suppliers, Consultants, Contractors, and other procurement entities who haven’t registered on the Ghana Electronic Procurement System (GHANEPS) will soon face challenges in conducting business with the government.

They may encounter obstacles in their operations and might not be guaranteed payment after providing services.

Mr. Prempeh delivered this message while giving a lecture on the Overview of Ghana’s Electronic Procurement System (GHANEPS) to members of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) on August 10th, 2023, at the Engineers Centre in Roman Ridge, Accra.

He explained that GHANEPS has made procurement processes paperless, eliminating the need for traditional printouts of tender documents. GHANEPS serves as an integrated system that streamlines procurement entities, enhances transparency, efficiency, and effectiveness, and provides seamless monitoring of contracts for government’s tax benefits.

During the period from 2019 to 2023, over 660 procurement entities have been trained and enrolled in GHANEPS, as part of the PPA’s plan to train and enroll 15 entities per month.

The rollout process is regional, covering all public procurement entities (PPE) within a region over approximately three months. Multiple rollouts are conducted for regions with more than 50 entities. Greater Accra has seen the most rollouts.

Mr. Kwame Prempeh also mentioned that by integrating the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) with GHANEPS, procurement entities increase the likelihood of receiving timely payment from the government after delivering goods/services. This integration helps reduce unauthorized contracts and arrears for the government.

Ing. Kwabena Bempong, the President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, stressed the importance of fairness, value for money, and transparency in procurement.

He highlighted that GHANEPS eliminates the human element, preventing manipulation and ensuring the integrity of the procurement process.

The lecture was attended by various engineering professionals, including Ing. Leslie Alex Aryeh (Past President of GhIE), Ing.

David Kwatia Nyante (Executive Director of GhIE), GhIE Council members, and engineers. The session was moderated by Ing. Joyce Asante, a professional Electrical/Electronic Engineer.

  • Ghana-USA trade reaches historic high – US ambassador

Ghana-USA trade reaches historic high – US ambassador

The efforts undertaken by the governments of Ghana and the United States are anticipated to lead to an upsurge in trade volumes.

In 2022, the trade in goods between Ghana and the United States of America reached an unprecedented peak of $3.7 billion, showcasing a favourable trade balance, as outlined in a fact sheet from the US Embassy in Accra.

During that year, Ghana’s exports to the US totaled $2.7 billion, encompassing key commodities such as crude oil, cocoa (beans, paste, and butter), apparel, rubber, and cassava.

Imports from the US stood at $1 billion in 2022, comprising significant items like automobiles, machinery, paper products, plastics, medical devices, fertiliser, and agricultural goods.

Virginia E. Palmer, the US Ambassador to Ghana, stated that due to collaborative measures implemented by both the US Embassy and the Ghanaian government, trade volumes are projected to experience further growth in the forthcoming years.

She emphasised that promising indicators point to substantial growth in various sectors, contributing to job opportunities in both Ghana and the United States, thereby fostering prosperity in both nations.

“To give a straightforward answer, I would say trade volumes are expected to expand by billions. With US$3.7 billion in goods now, it is a lot,” she said when asked about Ghana-USA trade prospects.

She spoke at the US – Ghana Business Expo held under the theme ‘Leveraging US trade relations for growth and prosperity’. The event took place in Accra.

The Under-secretary of Commerce for International Trade of the United States of America, Marisa Lago, commenting on trade volumes between the two countries stated that: “Emerging from the pandemic, total USA-Ghana trade has been on an upward trajectory.

“As our trade and investment relationship matures and continues to grow, we look forward to broadening the types of goods and services that we exchange; such as personal care products and apparel.”

Ms. Lago urged participants to be open about challenges, as they are looking for opportunities as well as to identify inhibiting factors that hold businesses back from delivering greater trade and investment.

Given the current global crises, she said, it is important to ensure that the business environment continues to support and foster entrepreneurship, innovation, investment, and trade.

She mentioned that to further strengthen trade between both countries, she will hold discussions with counterparts in Ghana’s government and the private sector on how they can work together to achieve some shared objectives of improving the business environment and facilitating increased trade and investment.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahir Hammond, said the government has stepped up support for the private sector, both domestic and foreign, to enhance production and export capacity – particularly in the manufacturing sector, with notable opportunities for export into the US market.

“We would like to see more export products from our shores into the US market, the most lucrative consumer market globally. We believe that this can be achieved through increased investment from the US, especially in respect of harnessing the considerable and largely untapped US market opportunities offered under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the Prosper Africa Initiative of the US government.”

The objective of the 2023 US Ghana Business Expo is to establish a platform that facilitates the development of mutual trade partnerships and economic advancement between the United States and Ghana.

The event brought together prominent figures within various industries, entrepreneurs, government representatives, and business executives from both countries. The purpose was to uncover potential prospects, share insights, and cultivate alliances.

  • Niger’s coup leaders announces intention to prosecute ousted President for ‘high treason’

Niger’s coup leaders announces intention to prosecute ousted President for ‘high treason’

    Niger’s mutinous soldiers have declared
their intention to charge ousted President Mohamed Bazoum with “high treason” and the act of jeopardizing state security.

This announcement came shortly after the junta expressed their willingness to engage in discussions with West African countries to address the escalating regional turmoil.

If proven guilty, Bazoum could potentially be subject to the death penalty as outlined in Niger’s penal code.

Spokesman Col. Maj. Amadou Abdramane said on state television Sunday night that the military regime had “gathered the necessary evidence to prosecute before competent national and international authorities the ousted president and his local and foreign accomplices for high treason and for undermining the internal and external security of Niger.”
The announcement said high-ranking West African politicians and “their international mentors” have made false allegations and attempted to derail a peaceful solution to the crisis in order to justify a military intervention.

It said Bazoum was being charged following his exchanges with these people.

The statement did not identify specific Western countries and did not specify a date for the trial.
Bazoum, Niger’s democratically elected president, was ousted by members of his presidential guard on July 26 and has since been under house arrest with his wife and son in the presidential compound in the capital, Niamey.

Individuals within the president’s inner circle and those affiliated with his ruling party have revealed that the family’s access to electricity and water has been severed, and their food supplies are dwindling.

The junta, however, refuted these claims on Sunday night and accused West African politicians and global partners of spreading misinformation to undermine the junta’s credibility.

Mounting international pressure is urging the junta to release and reinstate President Bazoum.

Following the coup, the West African regional organization ECOWAS issued a seven-day ultimatum for the regime to restore him to power, threatening potential military intervention if the demand went unmet.

Yet, this deadline came and went without any actions from either side.

In the past week, ECOWAS authorized the deployment of a standby force, though the timing and feasibility of its entry into the nation remain uncertain.

On Monday, the African Union Peace and Security Council is convening to discuss Niger’s crisis, potentially overturning the decision if it perceives broader continental peace and security to be compromised by an intervention.

As time passes, uncertainty grows and conflicting messages accumulate. On Sunday evening, before the military accused Bazoum of treason, a member of the junta’s communication team informed journalists that talks with ECOWAS had been approved and were scheduled for the upcoming days.

Simultaneously, an Islamic scholar mediation team from neighboring Nigeria, which had met with the junta over the weekend, conveyed that the regime was receptive to dialogue with ECOWAS.

Previous ECOWAS attempts to engage with the junta encountered obstacles, with their delegations being denied entry into the country. The newfound willingness to engage in talks might be influenced by ECOWAS’ pressures, encompassing significant economic and travel sanctions that are already impacting the country’s impoverished population of approximately 25 million.

Nonetheless, Sahel experts suggest that this does not guarantee substantive progress in the dialogue.

’Let’s see what these negotiations actually look like, because it’s also in the junta’s benefit to at least entertain talks.

That doesn’t mean they’ll be serious about them,” said Aneliese Bernard, a former U.S. State Department official who specialised in African affairs and is now director of Strategic Stabilization Advisors, a risk advisory group.
But while talk of dialogue ensues, so does military mobilisation.

In a memo from Senegal’s security forces dated Aug. 11, seen by The Associated Press, it ordered the “regroupment” from bases in Senegal on Monday as part of its contribution to the ECOWAS mission in Niger.

It was unclear what exactly was ordered to move, or where it was going.

In the weeks since the coup, the junta has entrenched itself in power, appointing a new government and leveraging anti-French sentiment against its former colonial ruler to shore up support among the population, creating a tense environment for locals who oppose the junta as well as many foreigners and journalists.

In a statement Sunday, the board of directors for the Press House, an independent Nigerien organisation that protects journalists, said local and international media were being threatened, and intimidated by Nigerien activists who support the junta and it was deeply concerned about the “very difficult climate” they were operating in.

Since the coup, jihadi violence is also rising. Niger was seen by Western nations as one of the last democratic countries in the Sahel region it could partner with to beat back growing jihadi violence linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group.

France and the United States, and other European countries have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into propping up Niger’s military. Since the coup, France and the United States have suspended military operations.

On Sunday, Nigerien security forces were ambushed by fighters believed to be with the Islamic State group, who attacked them on a dozen motorcycles, according to a security report for aid groups seen by AP.

This, combined with another attack last week claimed by the al-Qaida linked group known as JNIM, signify a new phase of the conflict where groups are trying to consolidate power, and it’s largely a consequence of the suspended military operations, said Wassim Nasr, a journalist and senior research fellow at the Soufan Centre, told The Associated Press.

“This is due to the halting of cooperation and the military being busy consolidating their coup in Niamey,” he said. It’s also a result of cutting communication and dialogue attempts with some jihadi groups, which had been established under Bazoum, he said.

A former jihadi, Boubacar Moussa, told the AP that since the coup he’s received multiple phone calls from active jihadis saying they have been celebrating the chaos and greater freedom of movement.

Moussa is part of a nationwide programme that encourages jihadi fighters to defect and reintegrate into society, however, it’s unclear if that programme will continue under the military regime. As the situation evolves, he believes jihadis will take advantage of the security gap and launch new attacks.

  • Uganda’s president mull alternative credit sources after World Bank suspends funding over LGBT law

Uganda’s president mull alternative credit sources after World Bank suspends funding over LGBT law

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni expressed his disapproval on Thursday regarding the World Bank’s decision to halt new funding due to a stringent anti-LGBTQ law.

He vowed to identify alternative credit sources to counteract this action.

In response to the potential repercussions of this move, a junior finance minister mentioned that the country might need to adjust its budget accordingly.

The World Bank announced on Tuesday that it deemed the law, which includes the death penalty for specific same-sex activities, contradictory to its principles.

Consequently, the Bank would suspend new funding until it could evaluate methods to prevent discrimination in projects funded by it.

Uganda currently has an ongoing portfolio of $5.2 billion with the World Bank, and the existing projects within this portfolio will remain unaffected.

The anti-LGBTQ legislation, enacted in May, has garnered criticism from both local and international human rights organisations as well as Western governments, despite its domestic popularity.

Museveni’s statement highlighted that Uganda is striving to minimise borrowing and will not bow to pressure from foreign entities.

“It is, therefore, unfortunate that the World Bank and other actors dare to want to coerce us into abandoning our faith, culture, principles, and sovereignty using money. They really underestimate all Africans,” he said.

Museveni said that if Uganda needed to borrow, it could tap other sources and that oil production, expected to start by 2025, would provide additional revenues.
He added that he hoped the World Bank would reconsider its decision.

The government will ask parliament to vote through a revised 2023–2024 (July-June) budget to reflect the potential financial impact of the lending suspension, junior finance minister Henry Musasizi told parliament on Thursday.

“We shall be coming in one week or so… to ask for your approval,” Musasizi told lawmakers.

In June, the United States imposed visa restrictions on some Ugandan officials in response to the law. President Joe Biden also ordered a review of U.S. aid to Uganda.

  • Such an embarrassment – Xavi fumes after ‘poor’ refereeing decisions in Barcelona draw with Getafe

Such an embarrassment – Xavi fumes after ‘poor’ refereeing decisions in Barcelona draw with Getafe

    Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez
launched a surprising verbal assault on La Liga president Javier Tebas, characterising the current state of the league as a disgrace.

Xavi’s outburst came in the aftermath of Barcelona’s lacklustre goalless draw against Getafe in the league’s opening fixture.

The match saw three red cards issued by the referee, a situation that greatly infuriated Xavi and led to his aggressive response.

The referee, Cesar Soto Grado, allowed Getafe to employ a rugged and frequently aggressive playing style, which disrupted the flow of the game and left both players and spectators disconcerted.

A potential late penalty for Barcelona was denied due to a controversial handball incident involving Gavi.

This decision intensified Xavi’s frustration, ultimately leading to his expulsion for dissent.

Xavi said in the post match conference: “If this match is La Liga’s product, it’s an absolute embarrassment. I understand why people don’t watch our football.

“The handball given to Gavi was invented. They told us in a meeting that only very clear handballs would be given, and Gavi’s wasn’t one, yet they gave it anyway.

“They told us they would use VAR less and I don’t know if VAR is there to help or not. I don’t see the point of that meeting. I was sent off for telling the referee they were allowing Getafe to get away with a lot of fouls and not doing the same for us.

“We had a meeting with the referees, and the first change they said they would make is that they would understand the coaches more, and the tension we feel on the pitch. But that is not what happened, and I don’t understand it.”

Xavi’s dismissal from the touchline could result in him being sidelined for a minimum of the next two matches.

However, due to his post-match tirade, it’s possible that his absence from the pitchside might extend to a range of five to ten games, considering La Liga president Tebas’ track record of not tolerating criticism.

The absence of key players in crucial positions is already posing challenges for the Blaugrana, and the impending suspensions of both Raphinha and coach Xavi are expected to exacerbate the situation.

Xavi’s outspoken criticism directed towards the La Liga president and the match officials might lead to a prolonged suspension.

Pleased but disappointed;we deserved to win – Pochettino on Chelsea’s draw against Liverpool

Mauricio Pochettino asserts that he is embarking on a remarkable journey with Chelsea, expressing this sentiment following his inaugural Premier League match in charge. The game ended in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

Although the home team initially conceded a goal at Stamford Bridge, Axel Disasi managed to equalise for Chelsea on his debut, securing them a point from their first match of the season.

When asked by the BBC’s Match of the Day whether a draw was a fair result, Pochettino replied: ‘I don’t believe it is. I think we deserved a little bit more overall.

“We feel pleased, but at the same time disappointed because we wanted to win and we deserved to win, but it is only the beginning.

We’ve established an excellent working approach here, which holds significant importance. It revolves around belief, diligent effort, and mutual trust. The connection we’ve forged from the very beginning has been exceptional.

‘The fans were always with us. Even in the difficult moments they were there, they never gave up and always believed in the team, and the team felt the energy from the crowd.

  • Neymar headed for the Saudis as Al-Hilal strike €160m deal with PSG

Neymar’s impending move to Saudi Arabia is nearing completion following Paris Saint-Germain’s agreement with Al-Hilal and the finalisation of personal terms.

L’Equipe reports that PSG and the Saudi Pro League team have come to terms on Neymar’s transfer.

The 31-year-old Brazilian has already committed to a two-year contract that will see him earn a total of €160 million (£138 million or $175 million).

Neymar’s six-year tenure in Paris seems to be concluding quietly. His absence from play since March and his pursuit of reconstructive ankle ligament surgery highlight the injury challenges that have persisted since his record-breaking transfer from Barcelona in 2017.

Despite netting 118 goals for PSG, Neymar’s relationship with the club’s fans has been turbulent in recent times.

This tension reached a peak when the ultras staged a protest outside his residence earlier this year. This summer, both Neymar and Marco Verratti were advised to seek new clubs.

Neymar will join a cadre of global superstars who have migrated to Saudi Arabia this season.

At Al-Hilal, he will collaborate with the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Ruben Neves, and former Barcelona player Malcom.

Neymar is on the verge of moving to Saudi Arabia after Paris Saint-Germain agreed a deal with Al-Hilal, with personal terms already settled.

According to L’Equipe, PSG and the Saudi Pro League side have reached an agreement for the transfer of Neymar.

The 31-year-old Brazilian has already agreed to a two-year-contract that will see him pocket €160 million (£138 million or $175 million) in total.

Neymar’s six-year spell in the French capital looks to be ending with a whimper. He has been out of action since March, and has undergone reconstructive ankle ligament surgery in an attempt to solve the injury issues that have plagued him since his world-record move from Barcelona in 2017.

Despite scoring 118 goals for PSG, Neymar has had an up-and-down relationship with the club’s fans in recent years, which came to a head when their ultras protested outside his home earlier this year. This summer, he was told, along with Marco Verratti, to find a new club.
Neymar will join a host of global superstars who have flocked to Saudi Arabia this summer.

At Al-Hilal, he’ll link up with Kalidou Koulibaly, Ruben Neves, and former Barcelona man Malcom.

  • Chelsea win the Caicedo race as it edge closer to sign eight-year contract with Brighton midfielder

Chelsea win the Caicedo race as it edge closer to sign eight-year contract with Brighton midfielder

Chelsea have emerged victorious in the race to secure the services of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo in a record-breaking British transfer worth £115 million ($146 million).

The imminent completion of Caicedo’s transfer to the Blues is reported by The Athletic, with an agreement in place and a medical examination scheduled for Monday.

The deal will see Caicedo sign an extraordinary contract spanning eight years, with the option for an additional ninth year.

Following the medical, the official announcement of the transfer is anticipated.

This development signifies the impending conclusion of a transfer saga that has spanned the entire summer, with Chelsea ultimately emerging as the successful party.

Recent reports indicated that Caicedo was resolute in his decision to join Stamford Bridge, despite Liverpool’s substantial £110 million British record bid.

At long last, it appears that Chelsea’s pursuit of the player has borne fruit.

Furthermore, reports suggest that a sell-on clause has been agreed upon with Brighton, which acquired Caicedo for a mere £4.5 million in 2021.

This arrangement implies a substantial profit of over £110 million for Brighton from the sale of the Ecuadorian international.

This profit underscores the effectiveness of the club’s esteemed player recruitment and transfer strategy, promising future gains as well.

For those who witnessed Chelsea’s inaugural fixture against Liverpool, the prospect of Caicedo’s contribution to Mauricio Pochettino’s reshaped team is undoubtedly thrilling.

The team showcased attacking prowess, albeit somewhat unbalanced and lacking a decisive cutting edge in the opposing box.

As the new signings acclimatise to life at Stamford Bridge in the forthcoming months, prospects for improvement seem promising.

  • Chelsea ponder Callum transfer to Crystal Palace as part of Michael Olise deal

Chelsea ponder Callum transfer to Crystal Palace as part of Michael Olise deal

Chelsea’s interest in acquiring the promising talent of Michael Olise from fellow English Premier League contender Crystal Palace persists.

Reports suggest that the club is contemplating facilitating a deal that would involve Callum Hudson-Odoi’s move to Crystal Palace, with the aim of securing Olise.

The rumours linking Chelsea to the potential signing of Michael Olise have been circulating since the commencement of the summer transfer window.

Despite the passage of several weeks, no concrete outcomes have emerged from the multitude of speculations and transfer narratives.

In a recent twist, sources have indicated that Chelsea is now exploring an alternative approach in their pursuit of bringing Michael Olise to Stamford Bridge.

There is a possibility that this strategy might entail including young talent like Callum Hudson-Odoi in an offer to Crystal Palace, supplemented by a cash component.

Anticipated to be presented to Crystal Palace within the week, this offer reflects Chelsea’s commitment to enhancing their squad.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, aged 22, seems to lack a foreseeable future at Chelsea. Notably, he is also a target for Fulham, an English Premier League team, although their initial bid was considered inadequate.

Mbappe to pen new PSG contract, but there’s a clause in a there

The ongoing transfer window has been marked by speculation about Mbappe’s future, but it seems that the 24-year-old forward will ultimately remain with PSG.

A contract offer has been presented, indicating that he will stay for now but is set to depart in 2024 for a fee.

Back in June, Mbappe informed PSG of his decision not to extend his existing contract, which is due to expire next summer.

In order to avoid losing him without compensation, PSG accepted a substantial offer of around £259 million ($328.4 million) from Saudi club Al-Hilal.

However, when Mbappe turned down the move, PSG left him out of their pre-season preparations.

Following productive discussions with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Mbappe appears to be on the verge of agreeing to a one-year extension until 2025.

This agreement includes a provision that guarantees his availability for transfer in 2024.

This arrangement benefits both parties – PSG will secure a transfer fee, while Mbappe will have the opportunity to pursue his desire to move on.

There is strong speculation that Mbappe aims to join Real Madrid next summer, especially considering that the Spanish club has yet to find a replacement for Karim Benzema.

Consequently, it’s likely that they will make a move for Mbappe in the upcoming year. Nevertheless, it seems that the prospect of a free transfer is no longer on the table.

Harrison Afful details how he got Messi to exchange shirts after Inter Miami, Charlotte FC clash

    Lionel Messi’s tendency
to desist from exchanging jerseys with opponents unless asked has been extensively documented.

This explains why Ghanaian footballer Harrison Afful became a trending topic on Ghana’s Twitter.

A camera captured a moment showing Afful exchanging jerseys with the football icon during a League Cup match where Afful represented Charlotte FC against Messi’s Inter Miami.

Despite his team’s 4-0 loss, the noteworthy aspect of the match was the intriguing interaction between the experienced player and the seven-time Ballon d’Or awardee after the game concluded.

“I remember before the match started, Messi gave me a wink, and I winked back at him. I think as the game progressed, we somehow got attuned to each other’s presence, given that I was playing as a left-back and my responsibility included marking him.

“At some point during the match, I approached him for his jersey, and he agreed,” Afful enthusiastically recounted to GHANASoccernet.com.

“After halftime, just before the second half began, we exchanged more winks, something that players often do. So, after the game, I approached him, and he kept his word.”

Afful then added with a smile, “Messi had the option to give his jersey to any player, but I suppose he showed me kindness.

“I can’t predict what he intends to do with my jersey, but it’s truly an honour to possess the shirt of one of the most exceptionally talented individuals to have graced the game.”

Abedi Pele praises Jordan Ayew’s display against Sheffield United

Legendary Ghanaian football figure, Abedi Pele, couldn’t conceal his pride as he observed his son, Jordan Ayew, deliver an impressive performance on the field during Crystal Palace’s captivating clash against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Jordan Ayew, who exhibited a strong performance in the latter part of the previous season, earned a spot in Palace’s starting lineup.

Following a goalless initial half, Crystal Palace returned for the second part of the game with renewed vigour and ultimately managed to break the deadlock.

In the 49th minute, Odsonne Édouard found the back of the net, securing all three points for Roy Hodgson’s team.

Ayew made a forward move as Lerma found him in a favourable position to his right. Ayew skillfully manoeuvred past Osborn before delivering an excellent cross into the center of the box.

Édouard capitalised on this opportunity to tap in the opening goal.

Abedi Ayew Pele, who was clearly happy with his son’s performance, took to his official twitter page to tweet: “Fireworks”

Having completed the full 90 minutes, Jordan Ayew managed 70 touches on the ball and achieved a passing accuracy of 77.5%.

Aged 29, Ayew will aim to maintain his promising beginning and strive for a victory as Crystal Palace welcome Arsenal to Selhurst Park in Week 2 of the Premier League on Monday, August 21st.

Every report about Kudus leaving Ajax is false – Ajax coach

Ajax manager Maurice Steijn remains optimistic that Ghanaian talent Mohammed Kudus will remain with the club for the upcoming 2023–24 football season.

Throughout the summer, Kudus, a prominent figure in Ghana’s national team, has been surrounded by transfer rumors.

In Ajax’s first match of the new Dutch Eredivisie season against Heracles on Saturday, Kudus was included in the starting lineup and contributed a goal in their impressive 4-1 comeback victory.

During a post-match interview, Maurice Steijn emphasised that, despite the various speculations, there is no concrete information regarding the potential transfer of the midfielder.

Steijn conveyed that Kudus is fully focused on delivering his best performance for Ajax.

“I have read a lot of reports about Kudus this week, but there is literally nothing right now that points to him leaving. I spoke to him this week, and he is fully focused on Ajax. He is a jewel for Ajax,” Maurice Steijn said.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Ajax are still working on a deal to sign Mohammed Kudus before the summer transfer window closes.

Man Utd pursue Fiorentina’s Amrabat after Fred move

Manchester United is determined to pursue the acquisition of Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina, as reported by The Sun.

This pursuit of Amrabat comes as a response to Fred’s departure to Fenerbahce, with the Turkish club reaching an agreement in principle for €10 million plus an additional €5 million in potential add-ons.

Fred, 30, is set to undergo a medical examination in Istanbul on Saturday, contingent on finalising personal terms and securing international clearance.

Should the transfer be successful, Manchester United’s manager Erik Ten Hag will be eager to proceed with his strategy of bringing Amrabat to Old Trafford in order to bolster the team’s midfield.

Throughout the summer, Manchester United has engaged in discussions with Fiorentina regarding a potential deal for Amrabat, and they are committed to finalising the agreement.

A partial cause for the delay was linked to Fred’s departure from the club.

Additionally, Juventus has expressed interest in acquiring the 26-year-old Amrabat, who garnered attention during Morocco’s journey to the World Cup semifinals last year.

Italian club Bologna makes revised offer for USA’s Cowell – Reports

Italian Serie A team, Bologna, has put forth a revised offer for Cade Cowell, the American attacker from the San Jose Earthquakes, according to multiple sources familiar with the negotiations, as reported by ESPN.

The updated proposal entails a loan arrangement with a purchase option attached.

An insider familiar with the discussions revealed that if the purchase option is triggered, the initial transfer fee would amount to $3 million, potentially increasing to $5.5 million with specific performance-based incentives.

Additionally, San Jose would be entitled to a percentage of any prospective future transfers.

Negotiations are currently in progress, with Italy’s transfer window closing on September 1 and the MLS roster freeze date set for September 13.

This development corroborates reports from The Athletic that the Quakes had declined an offer from Ligue 1’s Stade de Reims last year, as well as Bologna’s initial bid.

Cade Cowell, aged 19, is currently in his fifth season with the San Jose Earthquakes, having signed a Homegrown contract with the team in January 2019. In the ongoing season, he has contributed three assists across 13 league matches.

Cowell also represented the United States at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, where he scored three goals, propelling the U.S. to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champions Uruguay.

In total, Cowell has netted 11 goals for San Jose in a combined 102 appearances spanning league, cup, and playoff matches.

Cowell made his international debut for the U.S. in a friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina in January 2021. Since then, he has earned eight caps, and earlier this year, he participated in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup, scoring a goal in a resounding 6-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago.

Barca advances in Man City’s Cancelo chase

Barcelona’s pursuit of Manchester City’s wing-back João Cancelo has advanced, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.

Ongoing discussions with the Premier League champions are underway regarding the 29-year-old Portuguese international. Manager Xavi Hernandez has expressed interest in acquiring a wingback who can contribute offensively.

Barcelona is restricted from proposing a complete transfer deal for Cancelo. However, there is optimism regarding the potential for a loan arrangement with a subsequent option to secure a permanent signing.

Cancelo is currently under contract at Etihad until the 2026–27 season.

As per Nicolo Schira, personal terms between Barca and Cancelo have been agreed upon.

Negotiations between the two clubs are set to persist, focused on finalising the structure of the proposed season-long loan agreement.

Despite being less favoured by Pep Guardiola last season, Cancelo secured two league title medals as he was loaned to Bayern Munich, who ultimately became Bundesliga champions, in January.

PSG wantaway Mbappe, Neymar, others benched in PSG season opener

Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, and Marco Verratti were conspicuously absent from the Paris Saint-Germain lineup during their season-opening match against Lorient on Saturday, resulting in a goalless draw at Parc des Princes.

The uncertainty surrounding the trio’s future with the club has prompted their omission.

The relationship between Mbappé and the Ligue 1 champions has been strained, particularly since the forward declared his intention not to extend his contract, which concludes at the close of the 2023–24 season.

Notably, the French international was also excluded from PSG’s preseason tour last month.

    Kylian Mbappe

Mbappé is just one of several players who have been rumoured to be departing Parc des Princes during the ongoing transfer window, set to conclude on September 1.

Media reports in France have indicated that Neymar, the club’s record signing, and midfielder Verratti are also deemed surplus to requirements by the club.

Earlier this week, PSG communicated that Neymar was suffering from a viral infection.

  • Chelsea poised to beat Liverpool in signing Moisés Caicedo with a £115 million bid – sources

Chelsea poised to beat Liverpool in signing Moisés Caicedo with a £115 million bid – sources

Chelsea is poised to make another significant investment in the transfer market by potentially setting a new British transfer record for the second time this year.

The club has reportedly put forth a proposal of £115 million to secure the services of Brighton midfielder Moisés Caicedo, as revealed by sources speaking to ESPN’s James Olley.

While the precise details of the arrangement are still under discussion, Chelsea has signalled its intention to surpass the £111 million offer that Liverpool presented to Brighton for Caicedo on Friday.

It’s been confirmed by sources that the 21-year-old midfielder has expressed his desire to join Stamford Bridge, even after Liverpool reached an agreement with Brighton.

After undergoing protracted negotiations with Brighton throughout the summer—seeing a series of bids turned down, with the most recent being £80 million—Chelsea is now on the verge of finalising a deal that, with potential add-ons, will exceed the £106.8 million they spent on Enzo Fernández from Benfica in January.

In addition to their pursuit of Caicedo, Chelsea is aiming to outpace Liverpool in securing another midfielder, Romeo Lavia, by initiating discussions with Southampton.

Despite Liverpool’s multiple offers, Southampton has rejected them all for the 19-year-old Lavia, but Chelsea appears ready to exceed his £50 million valuation.

  • Man Utd in talks with Bayern for Pavard move

Man Utd in talks with Bayern for Pavard move

Reports indicate that Manchester United has initiated contact with Bayern Munich regarding the potential signing of defender Benjamin Pavard, potentially as a replacement for Harry Maguire.

While Manchester United has accepted a £30 million (€34m/$38m) bid from West Ham for Maguire, the transfer has yet to be finalized.

With this deal nearing completion, Manchester United has reportedly shifted their focus towards Bayern Munich’s versatile defender, Pavard.

According to information from Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League team has engaged in discussions with the Bundesliga champions, although there has been no approval from Bayern Munich for the deal.

Pavard, who primarily plays as a right-back for Bayern, is reportedly keen on leaving the Bundesliga club as he has no intentions of extending his contract, which expires in 2024.

The 27-year-old Frenchman is seen as a suitable replacement for Maguire, with Manchester United aiming to offload Maguire and recoup a portion of the £80 million ($101.9 million) they paid to Leicester City in 2019 – a then-world record fee for a defender.

Notably, Pavard, who is also capable of performing as a centre-back, has reportedly garnered the admiration of Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag.

As Pavard’s contract has only one year remaining, Manchester United will likely attempt to secure his services at a reduced price.

Manchester United is scheduled to kick off their season on Monday, August 14, against Wolves, while Bayern Munich begins their Bundesliga campaign the subsequent Friday against Werder Bremen.

It remains uncertain whether Maguire and Pavard will still be part of their respective teams when these matches take place.

‘He is better than me’ – Pochettino concedes ahead of Chelsea, Liverpool showdown

As Chelsea and Liverpool prepare to begin their Premier League campaignsss this Sunday, Chelsea’s head coach acknowledged a particular aspect in which his counterpart surpasses him.

Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of Chelsea, addressed the press on Saturday evening in anticipation of their upcoming match against Liverpool.

Pochettino openly stated that he shares a positive rapport with Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp.

The Argentine manager went on to express admiration for Klopp’s adeptness at displaying his enthusiasm on the field, commending both his football philosophy and personality.

Pochettino said: “He is better than me at showing his personality! But yes, his passion is there. Yes, I love him. I love him in a good way. I want to beat him on Sunday, but I think it is going to be a good game, and for sure I am going to enjoy seeing him again.

He added: “I enjoy his philosophy for football, how he is, and his character. I like how he is a very warm person; he has his character, and I think his debut was against us at Tottenham.

“Yes, from there, we’ve had very good relations. We have some of the same friends who played for Southampton, like Adam Lallana, that creates a good link between us. A player that loves us and Jurgen. It is a good link, communication period between the coaching staff.”

Pochettino also spoke about Klopp sending him a text message after the latter was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur in 2019.

“He is one of the best. He was so nice when I left Tottenham. One of the best messages. He’s doing a great job with Liverpool.

There are good and bad periods, but they really believe in him and give him the best tools to create a good team to fight for every title,” he said

Klopp has always been regarded as one of the best personalities in the game, with the German being lauded multiple times by Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola as well as a lot of his former players. Pochettino’s comments just further cement his status.

The duo will clash on Sunday at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea play host to Liverpool at 4:30 p.m. British Standard Time (BST).

  • Neymar to join Al-Hilal after PSG accept about €150 million bid for wantaway star

Neymar to join Al-Hilal after PSG accept about €150 million bid for wantaway star

Reports suggest that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has accepted a substantial offer for Neymar from Al-Hilal, a team in the Saudi Pro League.

The Brazilian player has apparently expressed his desire to leave PSG this summer, although the French club might hold out for a minimum of €150 million (£130 million or $165 million).

According to Fabrizio Romano, renowned for transfer news, Al-Hilal made a sizable offer for the 31-year-old on Saturday, which has now been acknowledged by RMC Sport.

Despite ongoing advanced negotiations between Neymar’s representatives and the club, Neymar himself has not yet given his approval for the deal.

If Neymar departs PSG during this summer window, it would mark the conclusion of his six-year stint in Paris, where he has recorded 118 goals in 173 appearances.

This development coincides with a somewhat unsettled period for the Ligue 1 champions, as evidenced by Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Marco Verratti being excluded from the squad in the 0-0 draw against Lorient.

Interestingly, Al-Hilal had previously presented a €300 million (£259 million or $332 million) bid for Mbappe last month, which was declined as Mbappe displayed no interest in moving there.

PSG’s focus is on selling Mbappe this summer after he declined a contract extension.

Avoiding a free transfer next year is PSG’s goal, but if both Neymar and Mbappe depart, the team’s performance in Ligue 1 and the Champions League could potentially suffer.

Negotiations are ongoing, and it appears increasingly likely that Neymar will not participate in any more matches for PSG.
