  • Subin MP accuses Nana Addo, Alan others of vote buying during 2007 delegates congress

Subin MP accuses Nana Addo, Alan others of vote buying during 2007 delegates congress

Very startling discoveries have been made about the 2007 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries held at the University of Ghana Legon by Eugene Boakye Antwi, the member of parliament representing the Subin seat in the Ashanti region.

He claimed that despite their best efforts, the majority of candidates failed to use money to sway the election’s results.

The MP mentioned some of the key contenders in that election, including aspiring Alan Kyerematen, Hackman Owusu Agyeman, and Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey among others, alleging that all of them paid huge sums of money to try and sway the election in their favour, however, despite their financial clout, they all lost to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who emerged as the winner.

“…Nana Akufo, I followed him in 2007, the day that we voted, I was his polling agent at Legon, Hon Alan Kyerematen paid more than him, he paid five hundred, and Hon Hackman Owusu Agyeman paid more than him.

“…I have given you an example, I said December 22, 2007, at Legon, Hon Hackman Owusu Agyeman paid money more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Hon Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey also paid more money than Nana Addo, Hon Alan Kyerematen also paid more money than Nana Addo, all of them paid more money than Nana Addo but most of the voters realized that Nana Addo deserved it so all of them voted for him,” he said.

Speaking in an interview with Okay FM on April 19, 2023, he explained that the NPP’s tradition of selecting its flagbearer is based on merit, message, long service, and loyalty, and not on financial considerations.

He further expressed his belief that the upcoming election is not about money, but about the candidate’s message and their track record of service and loyalty to the party.

“…the kind of tradition that we live with, is not about money that determines who becomes a flagbearer or an MP but is about the message. From President Kufour up till now, all the delegates voted based on the message, long service, and loyalty …those are their criteria.

“So, I don’t see any changes now, because the party that I know, they don’t change easily. So, when it is time, everyone needs to go and sell his or her message…So if someone says, I have given TNT, money and all that, those things don’t count during the voting process, what counts is one’s message to the delegates or the voters…because a similar thing happened just in 2007 and it is not that far,” he added.

His revelations come at a time when there are growing concerns about the role of money in Ghanaian politics and allegations of vote-buying in the party’s upcoming primaries as some party stalwarts and flagbearer hopeful has hinted of displaying cash during the election.

City at the semis: We are ‘exhausted’ but we will still play – Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola said he was “exhausted.” Manchester City demonstrated their street smarts in the Champions League by defeating Bayern Munich 4-1 on the road to the semifinals.

The Premier League champions drew 1-1 at Allianz Arena eight days after winning the first leg 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium to set up a matchup against Real Madrid, the current holders.

Erling Haaland missed a penalty in the first half, but after the interval, he gave City the lead with his 48th goal of the year.

Joshua Kimmich denied City an 11th successive victory late on after a second harsh penalty award of the game – Manuel Akanji punished for what was adjudged to be handball.

City are in the hunt for a Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup treble after advancing to a third successive European semi-final.

Guardiola, who took charge of the Premier League champions for a 400th time when he came up against his former club Bayern on Wednesday, feels their experience is standing them in good stead.

He told BT Sport: “We struggled in the first half. [Dayot] Upamecano broke all the lines down our left side and we struggled with [Kingsley] Coman.

“We were fortunate before the penalty miss, they had one or two chances and anything could happen but we defended really well.

“The finishing from Erling was really, really good. He is so young. The experience that we have in this competition, the players feel it a lot, they want to do it really well. The second half was much, much better since minute one.”

City face Championship side Sheffield United in an FA Cup semi-final on Saturday and Guardiola is concerned fatigue will be an issue.

He added: “We are exhausted. I don’t know how we recover to play against Sheffield United [in the FA Cup semi-final].

“Now is a tough moment for the game on Saturday, but we have to play then as [Manchester) United play in the Europa League [so play Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup on Sunday].”

Ramadan tragedy: Scores are killed in the Sanaa stampede in Yemen

Authorities in Yemen’s capital Sanaa said that a crush during the distribution of Ramadan charity killed at least 78 people.

Social media videos of the incident’s aftermath in the city’s Bab-al-Yemen neighbourhood depict chaotic scenes.

According to the Reuters news agency, hundreds of people poured into the school to accept gifts, which averaged about $9 (£7) per individual.

Since ousting the government in 2015, Houthi rebels have been in control of the city.

Those responsible for the distribution have been detained and an investigation is under way, the interior ministry said.

A spokesman for the ministry blamed the crush on the “random distribution” of funds without co-ordination with local officials.

Many people were also injured with 13 in a critical situation, a health official in Sanaa said.

“Women and children were among the dead,” a Houthi security official told AFP news agency on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to journalists.

The Associated Press news agency quotes two eyewitnesses who said Houthi fighters had fired into the air in an attempt at crowd control, apparently striking an electrical wire which resulted in an explosion. This caused panic that led to the crush, they added.

The event happened during the final days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which is marked by a period of fasting.

Last week a major prisoner swap between warring sides in Yemen started, seen as part of stepped-up efforts to end the devastating eight-year conflict.

Mohamed Ali al-Houthi, head of the Houthi supreme evolutionary committee, blamed Wednesday’s crush on the country’s humanitarian crisis.

“We hold the countries of aggression responsible for what happened and for the bitter reality that the Yemeni people live in because of the aggression and blockade,” he said on Twitter.

  • Ashley Cole’s spirited address to Chelsea defenders win the heart of fans

Ashley Cole’s spirited address to Chelsea defenders win the heart of fans

Before Chelsea’s Champions League match against Real Madrid, Ashley Cole gave a humorous pre-game statement to the Chelsea defence on camera.

The Blues welcomed the La Liga powerhouses to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night for the second leg of their quarterfinal match, looking to recover a 2-0 lead from the earlier match at Santiago Bernabeu.

The 2021 Champions League champions, according to The Guardian, were unable to defeat Carlo Ancelotti’s team and eventually withdrew from the competition.

A brace from Brazilian star Rodrygo was enough to earn Real another 2-0 win away from home to book a spot in the semi-final of the European competition.

Ashley Cole’s speech to Chelsea defenders

Despite Chelsea’s defeat, Sportbible reports that it is a passionate moment between Cole and the Blues’ defenders that has gone viral.

The moment, which was captured moments before the match, showed the Chelsea legend handing out some very clear pre-match instructions to his defenders.

At one point, the former left-back can be seen concentrating his efforts on Marc Cucurella, who has struggled for form since joining the west Londoners from Brighton.

Cole’s animated speech had fans talking online, with one posting:

“This us what we have missed all season – passion, winners.”

    A second added:

“Show me a single one of the current lot that have even close to this level of passion.

    While another added:

“Interesting. Ashley Cole really is integral to Lampard’s coaching staff.”

    Courtois appears to mock Chelsea

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Thibaut Courtois responded to Chelsea fans in kind, as he dazzled in Real Madrid’s 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge on April 18.

The goalkeeper had an impressive game despite being subjected to a hostile reception at his former home ground.

The lanky Belgian has never been forgiven for ditching the club to move to the Spanish capital and Blues fans made that clear with loud jeers every time Courtois was on the ball.

  • Gallagher believes ‘hopefully we can build on this performance’ after Blues Champions League exit

Gallagher believes ‘hopefully we can build on this performance’ after Blues Champions League exit

Conor Gallagher was heartbroken to see Chelsea’s journey in the Champions League come to an end last night, but he thinks there is hope for the future.

Despite giving it their all at Stamford Bridge, the Blues were defeated by Rodrygo’s second-half double as Real Madrid advanced to the semifinals with a 4-0 overall victory.

Gallagher thinks the Blues showed enough in the second leg to suggest they can end their Premier League campaign with a flourish under Frank Lamaprd, even though it is difficult to accept twice losing 2-0 to the European champions.

He said: “I feel like we played well, we had a lot of chances.

“I think we definitely had more and better chances than they did but football is all about taking your chances and we didn’t do that, which was disappointing.

“Of course, we’re going to be gutted but we played some good stuff.

“The cutting edge in front of goal is basically what wins you games and we haven’t got that at the minute.

“It’s definitely a big improvement over our recent performances but you need to score goals to win games. They did that and we didn’t.

“We pushed players forward and they were able to catch us on the counter a couple of times, which was the risk.

“Everybody will be very disappointed but I think there was a lot of improvement in our football over recent performances. I hope the fans can take that away.”

With Chelsea languishing 11th in the league, Lampard will attempt to lift his troops before they return to action against Brentford next Wednesday.

England international Gallagher, 23, added: “There’s always things to chase. We take one game at a time and we just want to improve as a whole team and win as many games as we can for the rest of the season.

“We’ll take it game by game and hopefully we can build on this performance because I feel like it was positive in a way.”

Suspected murder: Mduduzi Nxele, former AmaZulu found dead in his house

Sad news has been reported from KwaZulu-Natal.

Mduduzi Nxele, a former AmaZulu footballer, was discovered dead in his house on Tuesday.

The North Coast Rising Sun said that Nxele, 41, was discovered hanged in a bedroom of his Westham residence.

His wrists and feet were shackled, which raises suspicions that he may have been murdered. On the site, there was no sign of suicide.

Phoenix police communications officer Louise Naidoo said to the publication:

“The deceased, 41-year-old Mduduzi Nxele was found hanged in his room. His nephew, Asanda Nxele stated that he last saw his uncle the previous day.

He also said that he noticed that the door of the deceased’s outbuilding was slightly opened and jammed with a mat. Upon opening the door by force, he found the man hanging from the ceiling.

“The nephew found his uncle’s hands tied to the front with a cord while his feet were tied with a shoelace.

There was no suicide note at the scene nor did it seem that there was any struggle involved. Investigators, however, did find different types of beer bottles at the scene.”

Former Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu player Siyabonga Nomvethe said of the incident:

“Nxele was a good player, full of respect because we come from the same township – KwaMashu. This brutality of him being killed like this, it is painful because I don’t remember him as a person who was troublesome because he was a football player.”

“I spoke to him about bringing his young boy to AmaZulu to try his luck for trials during the off-season because we don’t have space for trials when the season of the DDC is on.”

PSG star Neymar expecting second child as girlfriend announces in an IG post

Neymar will soon become a father once again as his girlfriend Bruna Biancardi recently announced her pregnancy on Instagram.

In a post where she informed her 3.8 million followers of the news, the model mentioned the 31-year-old Paris Saint-Germain superstar.

In a series of adorable pictures the couple posted, Neymar can be seen grinning mischievously while holding Biancardi’s expanding baby bump.

According to Marca, the baby will be Neymar’s second child, as he has an 11-year-old named David Lucca with his ex-girlfriend and social media personality, Carolina Dantas.

    Neymar and Biancardi await arrival

In the photos, Biancardi was in blue jeans and a crocheted top which was styled with a matching cardigan. Neymar, meanwhile, was dressed in a cream T-shirt and blue shorts.

The photos were coupled with a lengthy caption that read:

“We dream of your life, we plan your arrival and know that you are here to complete our love, leave our days much happier. You’re going to join a beautiful family, with a brother, grandparents, uncles and aunts who already love you very much!”

Neymar and Biancardi have been dating since 2021, but only went public last year.

On his 31st birthday, the model shared a beautiful message for the PSG forward, which all but confirmed their relationship was on good footing.

Their relationship has not been short of ups and downs, however, as they broke up shortly after announcing their engagement in August 2022.

‘We never thought of CR7’ – Napoli director refutes claims

Director of Napoli Cristiano Giuntoli has come forth and stated categorically that the team has no remorse over missing on Cristiano Ronaldo.

Despite holding a sizable lead at the top of Serie A, Gli Azzurri have struggled to score in recent games.

In the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal against AC Milan on April 19, they faced their Italian rivals in an effort to overcome a 1-0 deficit.

AC Milan started with the same squad that beat Napoli 4-0 in a comprehensive performance earlier this month, while Napoli boss, Luciano Spaletti was forced to make several changes in the absence of Kim Min-jae and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa – both through suspension – and Giovanni Simeone, who is still recovering from injury.

With Nigerian superstar, Victor Osimhen back in action from injury, it came as a slight boost for Napoli but they fell short in the second leg and could only manage a 1-1 draw.

    ‘We never thought of CR7’

Prior to the Champions League second leg, Giuntoli was asked about rumours Napoli wanted to sign Ronaldo over the summer, something he strongly denied.

“In all honesty, we never even thought about it. We had some financial parameters we needed to stick to and thought we could surprise people more with a group of lads who were eager to prove themselves,” he said, per FootballItalia.

Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr at the turn of the year and has been in decent goal-scoring form for the Saudi Arabia giants. As per Transfermkt, he has 11 scores so far for his new team.

However, there has been a general feeling that Al-Nassr has fallen off since the Portugal star’s arrival, with the club in danger of missing out on the league title despite being in pole position before Ronaldo had signed on.

    Cristiano taunted with Messi chants

It was earlier reported on how Ronaldo was taunted with Messi chants by Al-Hilal fans on Tuesday, in a frustrating night for the veteran.

The Portuguese phenom’s side was dealt a crushing blow thanks to a brace from Nigerian striker, Idion Ighalo at the King Fahd International Stadium.

The result left Al-Nassr three points behind Saudi Pro League leaders, Al-Ittihad, who have a game in hand and look set to claim this season’s crown.

Guardians beat JHS student with iron rod for alleged GHS50 theft

A first-year JHS student at the Koforidua Sarkodea Basic A school has been physically abused by his parents after they accuse him of stealing GHC 50.

According to reports, Samuel Agyei Tawiah, the child, forcedly agreed to stealing the money to put a stop to his agony.

The pupil, who had no mother when he was born, has been live with his aunt and her husband, who are accused of abusing him.

According to Citi News sources at the school, the guardians who accused the boy of stealing the money subjected him to severe beatings with an iron rod inflicting deep cuts around his left eye.

The boy, sensing danger, then admitted to the crime indicating the money was given to a colleague student, a situation which forced the guardians to match him to the school. But on reaching the school they could not identify the said student he allegedly gave the money to.

The guardians who were angered by that move jumped on him beating him again in front of teachers and students at the school.

The teachers who were allegedly threatened by the guardians when they tried intervening then called in the police who came to escort the student and his guardians to the police station.

  • Monthly mobilization exercises should be performed by ECG – IES

Monthly mobilization exercises should be performed by ECG – IES

The Institute for Energy (IES) has advised the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to carry out monthly revenue mobilisation exercises to ensure that they do not accumulate debts owed to them.

Research and Policy Analyst at IES, Adam Yakubu, speaking to the media, said that making the exercise routine would instil awareness regarding payments for electricity consumed.

“I think it should be something that should be done monthly so that they go around every month to mobilise revenue,” he added.

ECG’s month-long revenue mobilisation initiative, which began on 20 March, will end on Friday, 21 April 2023.

Samuel Dubik Mahama, Managing Director of ECG, stated that his company is considering reaching out to private firms to help retrieve funds from defaulting customers after the end of the exercise.

“There is a possibility that we might even sell the debt to private institutions to go and collect. It is something that we are considering because we’ve gotten to the point where we need all the help we can get.”

“So, if it means discounting it to other companies and then getting what we need, why not? It is something on the table worth considering,” he said.

“If you are buying £1 million, it is irrelevant. If you’re coming to buy about £200 million, £400 million, then you’re talking. So, it is something I’ll present to the board at the right time, and we’ll go through it and we can give percentages to them,” he explained.

He also revealed that preparations are being made to launch a new initiative that would focus on unauthorised power connections in the country.

He added that anyone found guilty of the act would be prosecuted.

“So let’s take it that I am giving everyone a head start. Anybody who believes their meter has been tampered with and there is a bypass, note that the utility court is being set up, and you are going to be charged with stealing. You will not be charged with bypass, and we know stealing is imprisonment, so if you’ve bypassed the meter, please correct it,” he added.

  • Bayern players allegedly distant themselves from Sadio Mane after he lip punched teammate, Sane

Bayern players allegedly distant themselves from Sadio Mane after he lip punched teammate, Sane

Following his confrontation with teammate Leroy Sane at the Etihad Stadium, Senegal international Sadio Mane has lost the support of Bayern Munich players, according to Sky Sports.

Following Bayern Munich’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City in the first leg of the 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, Sadio Mane is accused of punching Leroy Sane in the lip.

The incident led to the Senegalese being banned for one game hence his absence in Bayern’s Bundesliga game against Hoffenheim on Saturday, April 15, 2023.

Sky Sports has now reported the Bayern Munich players were disappointed about the incident because they expected Sadio to Mane better and has since distanced themselves from him.

“He is seen very critically inside now and because of that behavior, a lot of players in the team that I have spoken to have distance themselves from him (Sadio Mane),” Sky Sports reported.

The report also added that the club will most likely let Sadio Mane go in the summer for his behavior.

“I can say that he is a candidate for sale in the summer because of high salary and also I heard that Thomas Tuchel has no real plans of working with him in the summer,” the report added.

Karim Benzema injury may cost him as Real forges into UCL semis

Following Karim Benzema’s injury, Real Madrid’s victory over Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League has come at a significant cost to the Spanish powerhouses.

After an easy 4-0 aggregate victory over Frank Lampard’s team, Los Blancos eliminated the Blues from the Champions League quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly acknowledged that he replaced Benzema in Tuesday’s 2-0 victory at Chelsea because the French forward sustained an injury.

“Karim had a blow, a stomp on his foot, it started to bother him at the end and we changed him.”

Benzema has been a thorn in Real Madrid’s side this season, picking up various knocks in a hectic campaign which has seen him already miss 13 games due to injury.

Chelsea mascot excited to meet Benzema

Meanwhile, Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema was quick to meet an outstretched hand of an excited Chelsea mascot with his own before their Champions League game at Stamford Bridge, Daily Star reports.

A huge smile spread across the face of the youngster before a delighted shocked face that looked like disbelief after Benzema had shook his hands

Benzema’s gesture towards the mascot has provided a heartwarming reaction across England following the backlash Arsenal stars faced after refusing to talk to the mascots in their Premier League game against West Ham.

Chelsea crash out of Champions League

Earlier, it was reported Chelsea were beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge as poor finishing cost them any chance of turning the quarter-final first-leg result around.

A brace from Brazilian sensation, Rodrygo de Goes dumped the West Londoners out of the Champions League, compounding what has been a catastrophic campaign, to say the least.

Wednesday night’s result means the Londoners’ woes in front of the goal continue unabated, scoring just once in four games under Frank Lampard.

PSG in a ‘Harry’ for Kane as Messi’s contract stalls

As discussions for Lionel Messi’s new contract stagnate, French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain is reportedly interested in signing Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer.

If Spurs don’t make the Champions League, the 29-year-old England captain, who only has one year remaining on his contract, may want to leave North London at the end of the current campaign.

Le Parisien says that the Ligue 1 champions would make the No. 10 their priority objective as they try to retool their team in preparation for the 2023–24 season.

Rumours have linked Messi with a sensational return to Barcelona after the Argentinian icon was forced out of the Camp Nou due to the club’s financial issues two years ago.

But Kane is considered by club chiefs to be the perfect partner for Kylian Mbappe, who is keen to win the Champions League with his hometown club.

The Three Lions ace has bagged 23 goals in the Premier League for Spurs this season despite their struggles under Antonio Conte.

Now managerless, the eight-time FA Cup winners sit three points off Newcastle in fourth and a loss to the Magpies on Sunday would all but kill their hopes of competing in Europe’s top competition next term.

Kane is said to be open to discussing a new contract at his boyhood club, but may choose to depart in search of silverware that would be almost guaranteed at PSG.

Haaland leads top scorer chat in Champions League

As the Champions League enters its latter stages, the race to be crowned top scorer is also hotting up with the world’s most lethal forwards competing for supremacy.

We run through the favourites to see who is in the mix.

Erling Haaland (11 goals, one assist)

Erling Haaland continued his miraculous scoring feats when netting five goals against RB Leipzig in Manchester City’s 7-0 last-16 second-leg victory.

Records continue to tumble for the Norwegian sensation who became the quickest and youngest player to notch 30 times in the competition, taking only 25 games at the age of 22 years and 236 days.

His effort against Bayern Munich in the last eight was his 11th goal in the Champions League this season, his best return in a single campaign and the outright second most for a player for a Premier League side after Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2002-03 (12).

Mohamed Salah (eight goals, two assists)

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was on fire in Europe this season and scored his eighth goal in just seven matches to hand his side a 2-0 lead over Real Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 showdown.

Unfortunately for the Egyptian, the Reds went on to lose 5-2 at Anfield and were knocked out after a 1-0 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Kylian Mbappe (seven goals, three assists)

World Cup Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappe has enjoyed a prolific campaign but will not land the coveted crown.

The Frenchman failed to inspire his side past Bayern in the last 16 and finishes on a respectable seven goals from eight outings.

Vinicius Junior (six goals, five assists)

Vinicius Junior played a pivotal role as Los Blancos knocked out Chelsea at the quarter-final stage.

With 10 goals and 11 assists, including setting up Rodrygo’s opener at Stamford Bridge, Vinicius has been involved in 21 goals in his last 21 Champions League appearances for Real.

Joao Mario (six goals, two assists)

Joao Mario scored in both legs as Benfica breezed past Club Brugge in the last 16 — equalling the great Eusebio’s club record of scoring in five consecutive European games.

But he was an anonymous presence in the 2-0 home defeat to Inter Milan in the Eagles’ quarter-final first leg, leaving a huge mountain to climb at the San Siro.

Didier Drogba ‘no longer recognize club’, calls out owners to revisit principles

In light of Chelsea’s dismal season, Didier Drogba has launched a stinging attack on the club’s current management.

With a 4-0 aggregate score, Real Madrid eliminated Chelsea from the Champions League on Tuesday night.

With the departure, Chelsea’s final opportunity to win a trophy and find redemption this year also vanished.

The possibility of playing in any capacity in Europe next season is currently a long shot given their current 11th-place standing.

They are currently languishing in 11th position, with any form of European football next season a far cry at moment.

Drogba has now waded into the discussion, seemingly taking issue with the Todd Boehly owned club.

Boehly led the Clearlake consortium in acquiring the West London club last summer following the decision of Roman Abramovich to sell.

Despite pumping an excess of 600 million euros in their first two transfer windows, Chelsea are yet to find a winning formula. Four managers have already been contracted this season.

    What Drogba thinks

Whilst the search for a new permanent boss continues, Drogba has questioned the lack of class at the club under the new owners.

“I knew this club with a certain class during the Abramovich era, but today I find it lacking. It’s very hard for me to see how they got rid of certain people.

They should go back to the principles and values they had. I no longer recognise my club,” as quoted by the Guardian.

Boehly undertook a major revamp of the technical staff with longstanding chairman Bruce Buck, director of football Marina Granovsakia and legendary goalkeeper and technical director Petr Cech all exiting the club.

The club has struggled to maintain its high standards as the American continues to juggle his way around owning a football club.

Drogba scored the winning penalty when Chelsea first won the Champions League in 2012 against Bayern Munich.

Lampard, who captained the squad on that night, declined to respond to Drogba’s stinging remarks.

Carlo lauds keeper Courtois intrepid display in seeing Madrid to the semis

Thibaut Courtois’ performance against Chelsea in the Champions League, according to Carlo Ancelotti, was crucial for Real Madrid.

The former Blues custodian played admirably in Tuesday’s second leg, which Madrid won 2-0 and 4-0 overall thanks to two goals from Rodrygo in the second half.

Prior to the Brazilian scoring, Courtois was crucial in keeping Chelsea from having a chance to get back into the game with an outstanding save on Marc Cucurella.

Speaking afterwards, Ancelotti lauded his goalkeeper’s contribution while paying tribute to his side for how they soaked up the pressure at Stamford Bridge.

“They were ahead on the scoreboard [mentally],” he told Movistar. “The save was very important. In the second half, we managed better, we had more space.

“We knew that we had to suffer in this type of game. [Chelsea] tried everything, they created problems for us. It has been a complete game, and a deserving tie.”

Rodrygo echoed his coach’s comments, lauding Courtois while touching on the pressures of ensuring Madrid live up to expectations with a semi-final appearance.

“We suffered today at the beginning, but there [Courtois] was again to save us,” he added. “We have the obligation to reach the semi-finals every year.

“We’ve achieved it every year since I’ve been here. I don’t know what happens to me with this competition, but it is very special, and I am very happy.”

Madrid will face either Manchester City or Bayern Munich in the last four, with the Premier League side favourites to join them after a hefty 3-0 first-leg win.

Joseph Paintsil surpasses Osimhen, Salah on list of African players with most goals involvement

Joseph Paintsil of Ghana has been in outstanding form this year, outperforming Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Victor Osimhen of Nigeria.

This season, the 25-year-old has collected more goals and assists than any other African player, making him a notable performer in Belgium.

In addition to receiving multiple man of the match honours, Paintsil recently helped Genk defeat Anderlecht 5-2.

He also recorded an assist in the game, bringing his total tally for the season to an impressive 27 goals and assists across all competitions.

The young winger’s performance has not gone unnoticed by fans and experts alike, who are impressed with his consistency and ability to impact games.

With his impressive form, Ghanaian winger Joseph Paintsil is expected to attract interest from several top clubs in the upcoming summer transfer window. His current transfer value is estimated to be between €5.5M and €9.2M.

Essien not interested in ever coaching Black Stars

The former Chelsea player was asked by Nigerian journalist Lolade Adewuyi whether he would consider coaching the Black Stars in the future, but he declined.

Adewuyi said in a tweet that he spoke with Essien during a layover in Denmark.

Essien, a holder of two UEFA coaching certifications, is now the head coach of FC Nordsjaelland in the Danish Superliga.

“On my way to Naples, had a long layover in Denmark where I met a legend of the game, Michael Essien.

He’s now a coach at FC Nordsjaelland in the Danish Superliga. He recently got his UEFA A and UEFA Elite Youth Coach licenses.

Future Black Stars coach? He said not interested,” Adewuyi’s tweet accompanied by a photo of himself and Essien read.

Essien belongs to a Golden Generation of Black Stars players that qualified Ghana to her first World Cup in 2006 in Germany.

One of his contemporaries Laryea Kingston is into coaching (currently with the U-17) along with his big brother Richard who is currently a goalkeeper’s trainer for the Black Stars.

The skipper during Essien’s time with the team, Stephen Appiah recently commented on former players having to aspire to management of the sports.

  • Rodrygo strikes the celebratory “sui” stance of his idol Ronaldo

Rodrygo strikes the celebratory “sui” stance of his idol Ronaldo

After ending Chelsea’s chances of winning the Champions League, Real Madrid goal hero Rodrygo celebrated like Cristiano Ronaldo.

He subsequently admitted that he did so more for self-preservation than for inspiration.

The Brazilian forward scored twice as Real Madrid defeated Chelsea 2-0 on Tuesday to go to the semifinals under Carlo Ancelotti.

The 22-year-old Santos-born superstar increased his total to 15 goals in 37 games played in the tournament, only 19 of which were starts.

It was after his first goal that Rodrygo performed the signature Ronaldo ‘siu’ celebration, with a jump and twist followed by a pose reminiscent of Madrid’s all-time record scorer.

However, the youngster admitted he did it to spare a problematic knee any further aggravation — as well as in tribute to the Champions League’s 140-goal leading marksman.

Rodrygo told Movistar: “First I thought about sliding on my knee, but I have inflammation.

“Then my idol, Cristiano, came to my mind and I did it.

“I hope to continue like this, scoring more goals and giving assists and winning the Champions League more times.”

Madrid await the winner of the tie between Manchester City and Bayern Munich, with the reigning English champions 3-0 ahead in that tie ahead of Wednesday’s second leg in Germany.

It could therefore be a repeat of last season’s semi-final, when Madrid came back from a 5-3 deficit in the dying stages of the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu to win in extra time.

On that occasion, Rodrygo’s late double — scoring in the 90th minute and then in stoppage time — sensationally kept the LaLiga giants in the tie before Karim Benzema’s penalty left City crestfallen.

A rematch would be an occasion to cherish, but Rodrygo said: “We don’t know if it’s against City yet.

“The Champions League is very difficult. We can no longer choose opponents and they are all difficult.”

  • Spalletti regrets ‘inexperience’ after Milan hammer Napoli out quarter finals

Spalletti regrets ‘inexperience’ after Milan hammer Napoli out quarter finals

After Napoli’s Champions League elimination by AC Milan on Tuesday, Luciano Spalletti lamented their inexperience and physical difficulties.

The quarterfinal second leg ended in a 1-1 stalemate in Naples, but Milan advanced 2-1 on the basis of a 1-0 victory in the first leg last week. Victor Osimhen’s late goal offset Olivier Giroud’s early goal.

While quickly giving credit to a resolute Milan, Spalletti suggested that Napoli’s lack of experience and fitness issues after Osimhen missed the first leg due to injury were difficulties.

The Napoli coach told Mediaset: “We congratulate Milan for this qualification, that must be done because they have played two games managing to capitalise to the maximum [on their opportunities].

“This is a sign of a mature team, of players who know how to choose the moments: when to step on the accelerator and when you have to defend yourself with all the team.

“But I also want to congratulate my players. We played a Champions League campaign of the highest level and we played a good match tonight as well.

“We paid for a little inexperience in reading the moments of the match.

“We played with different players with a little tiredness, starting with Osimhen who had not played for twenty days.”

Napoli have failed to progress from four of their five Champions League knockout rounds, with their only success coming in the round-of-16 tie this season against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Spalletti’s side are also without a win in their last three games in all competitions (D2 L1), having gone winless in just three of their 16 previous games (W13 D1 L2).

A Scudetto will still likely follow with Napoli leading at the Serie A summit by 14 points, yet Spalletti acknowledged his side have slipped away after getting too comfortable following a March 19 victory at Torino.

He added: “We weren’t good enough inside the penalty area to score, as they did the only time they came in.

“We were in good condition, both mentally and physically [in the first half], then after the break we found players not in condition and forcing our press a few times.

“The league win against Torino made us believe that the championship was a formality. During these two games, we did everything totally differently.”

After seeing Frank Anguissa dismissed in the first leg, in which Ismael Bennacer’s strike proved the difference in a 1-0 win for Milan, Spalletti was left frustrated with referee Istvan Kovacs.

Spalletti once again voiced his displeasure with the officiating, suggesting Szymon Marciniak should have awarded a first-half penalty for Rafael Leao’s sliding tackle on Hirving Lozano.

“Tonight there’s a clear penalty on Lozano in the 37th minute, very clearly, his ankle just twists,” he continued.

“You can see it very well in the replays. You risk twisting his ankle. It’s a penalty you can’t miss.”

Did you know CR7 paints his nails? Netizens react after spotting it in an IG post

Despite his age, Cristiano Ronaldo is unquestionably one of the best athletes in his field.

LeBron James, Lewis Hamilton, Thiago Silva, and Eliud Kipchoge are just a few athletes who have managed to keep their fitness levels at their highest peaks alongside Ronaldo.

It comes as no surprise that the majority of his accomplishments occurred after he turned 30.

Ronaldo has hit the ground running in Saudi Arabia, as he aims to win the league title in his maiden season with Al-Nassr.

Age always has a funny way of catching up with a person and one has to devise ways to remain at an optimum level. For the 38-year-old, hitting the gym constantly has always done the trick.

However, fans noticed something else when Ronaldo recently uploaded a picture of himself in the sauna on his Instagram story. Hawk-eyed followers spotted the five-time Ballon d’Or winner had his toenails painted black.

Upon a quick glance at his social media pages, where his toenails are often visible, it was established this was not a one-time coincidence: the veteran regularly has his toenails painted.

    Why Ronaldo paints toenails black

It has already been determined, this is likely not for aesthetic reasons. Black toenails are a phenomenon often seen with MMA fighters or boxers including the legendary Mike Tyson at one point.

The main idea behind the paint to prevent chipping of toenails while they are training or on the pitch, as Black Belt Trek reports.

German publication, BILD additionally adds that ‘many top athletes do this to protect their nails from fungi and bacteria when they are stuck in sweaty shoes for hours’.

There is no doubt the Portuguese icon has taken several initiatives to ensure his longevity.

At this rate, he might have at least five more years in the tank, before he called it quits on an illustrious career that has taken him to the top in five countries.

    Why Argentine turned down Al-Nassr

It was earlier reported that Ricardo Antonio Mohamed opening up about his decision not to take up the head coach role at Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr.

The Saudi Pro League side axed Rudi Garcia recently on the back of a poor run of form and replaced him for now with U19 coach, Dinko Jelicic on an interim basis.

Mohamed, who currently manages UNAM Pumas in Mexico, claimed he turned down an opportunity to coach Al-Nassr despite four attempts made by the club.

Women’s FA Cup: United’s Skinner bemused over

Marc Skinner has questioned the “crazy” choice to only award Manchester United and Chelsea 8,000 tickets each for the Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley next month.

The FA revealed on Monday that 65,000 tickets for the May 14 finale have already been distributed, with sales for the ends allotted to each team to follow.

United stated that their initial allocation was 8,000, while Chelsea stated that theirs was 7,530.

Speaking ahead of his side’s Women’s Super League clash with Arsenal on Wednesday, Red Devils boss Skinner said: “I don’t know how many it is in the men’s game, I really don’t, I don’t know how many they allocate.

“But to give clubs like Chelsea and Manchester United 8,000 tickets to sell, it’s crazy. To give two massive clubs 8,000 tickets is just crazy.”

The match is set to see the Women’s FA Cup final attendance record smashed, with the biggest crowd to date being the 49,094 that witnessed Chelsea’s extra-time victory over Manchester City last season.

An FA spokesperson said: “The FA Cup final is the showpiece event of the women’s domestic season and to date we have issued over 65,000 tickets.

“Finalists Chelsea and Manchester United have each been issued with an additional 7,500 tickets for their fans.

“This is to help meet the likely demand for each club and is almost double the amount of tickets the finalists received last year.

“We look forward to hosting another memorable final at Wembley on May 14 and are anticipating a new record attendance.”

It will be United’s first appearance in the final, while Emma Hayes’ Blues are aiming to lift the trophy for a third consecutive time.

The sides are also vying for the WSL title, with leaders United currently a point clear of the champions having played a game more.

Arsenal are a further two points back in third.

  • Inzaghi unfazed by criticism ahead of Benfica match

Inzaghi unfazed by criticism ahead of Benfica match

As his Inter team gets ready to try to clinch a spot in the Champions League semifinals, under pressure head coach Simone Inzaghi claims criticism would help him develop.

With only one point earned in their previous five Serie A games, the Nerazzurri have increased pressure on Inzaghi and dropped to fifth position.

Monza defeated Inter 1-0 at home on Saturday, and they have been sobbing ahead of the second game against Benfica at San Siro on Wednesday, which they will begin with a 2-0 lead.

Inzaghi says he will not be affected by flak that comes his way as that is nothing new to him.

He told reporters on Tuesday: “I don’t think it’s strange [for questions to be asked over his future].

“Here at Inter, if you read before the Barcelona or Porto matches it was the same thing.

“It’s something I’m used to, as long as they criticise me [and not the players] it’s not a problem: as far as me and my staff, the criticisms help us to improve more and more.

“We know we have not had the path that Inter should have in the league, like many other teams we’ve had problems, but there are still eight games to go and we still have a margin.

“We have to be good at isolating ourselves and try to provide an important evening for our fans.”

Inter may have a very different squad next season, with Milan Skriniar on his way to Paris Saint-Germain, Romelu Lukaku’s loan deal coming to an end and also Stefan de Vrij among a group of players who are nearing the end of their contracts.

Inzaghi will not use that as an excuse.

He added: “We have to be good at isolating ourselves, as far as players are concerned, we have several who have contracts that are about to expire, but I see them working well every day.

“It’s part of today’s football to always be criticised or in the balance. We have to be good and strong, with a cool head and always think about the next match which at the moment is Benfica.”

  • Sudan crisis: Burhan and Hemedti – the two generals at the heart of the Sudan conflict

Sudan crisis: Burhan and Hemedti – the two generals at the heart of the Sudan conflict

Sudan has been in turmoil for several years, and two men have emerged as key players in the country’s political landscape – General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as “Hemedti.” These two men have been at the center of the conflict in Sudan, with each playing a critical role in shaping the country’s future.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of Sudan’s ruling military council, greets his supporters in Khartoum’s twin city of Omdurman on Saturday.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan is the Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, which was formed in August 2019, following the ousting of long-time dictator Omar al-Bashir. Burhan was appointed as the head of the transitional government, which was tasked with steering the country towards civilian rule.

He is a former army general who was appointed as the head of the transitional military council after al-Bashir’s ousting.

On the other hand, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as “Hemedti,” is the Deputy Chairman of the Sovereign Council and the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

    Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo

The RSF is a paramilitary group that was formed in 2013 to fight against rebel groups in Darfur. Hemedti rose to prominence during the Darfur conflict, and he is considered to be one of the most powerful men in Sudan.

Despite their shared position in the Sovereign Council, Burhan and Hemedti have different political backgrounds and ideologies.

Burhan is considered to be a moderate and has been seen as more willing to negotiate with opposition groups, while Hemedti is seen as a hardliner who is more likely to use force to achieve his goals.

The conflict in Sudan has taken various forms, ranging from economic struggles to ethnic tensions.

The most recent crisis began in October 2022, when protests erupted over the rising cost of living and fuel shortages.

The protests quickly turned violent, with security forces cracking down on demonstrators. The violence has led to the deaths of hundreds of people and forced thousands to flee their homes.

The international community has been closely watching the situation in Sudan, with many countries calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

However, there are also concerns that the conflict in Sudan is becoming a global power struggle, with various countries vying for influence in the region.

The United States, China, and Russia are among the countries that have been accused of interfering in Sudan’s internal affairs.

In conclusion, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as “Hemedti,” are two men who have been at the center of the conflict in Sudan. Their political differences have contributed to the unrest in the country, and the situation remains precarious.

The international community must work together to find a peaceful solution to the crisis in Sudan and ensure that the country can transition to civilian rule.

  • ‘We are ready to support, he should just reach out’ – GBA President tells Freezy MacBones

‘We are ready to support, he should just reach out’ – GBA President tells Freezy MacBones

The president of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA),Abraham Kotei Neequaye, claims the organisation is taking its time approaching Seth Gyimah, a boxer who competes in the UK, about representing Ghana.

He contends that Gyimah, also known as Freezy MacBones, must convince the authorities that he is dedicated to fighting for Ghana because they are prepared to offer the required support.

Following his victory over Darryl Sharp last weekend at the Copper Boxing Arena in London, the 33-year-old has been in the news.

With Gyimah hailing from Ghana, there have been calls for the GBA to consider getting the lightweight fighter to contest on the ticket of his country of birth.

However, Kotei Neequaye says the authority will not make the first move to reach out to him.

“We are not supposed to call him. He should reach out to us if he wants to fight as a Ghanaian, we are ready to support him,” he said on Accra-based Angel FM.

In an earlier interview with Joy Sports, the boxer revealed he faced discouraging messages when he first decided to go into boxing.

“It was a tough time [for me when I started boxing] because obviously, we have a lot of great boxers in the UK and as a village boy travelling all the way from Ghana to start boxing here at the age of 27, a lot of criticism came up,” he said.

“A lot of people quizzed my decision to start boxing and asked if there was an injury who was going to look after me. [At that] time I was an amateur – no income and nothing coming up. People said ‘You need to stay focused and keep doing your cleaning job’.

“There was a whole lot but I never let myself down. I kept working hard and working toward my dream, pushing myself up until it happened,” he added.

With his victory from last weekend, Gyimah now pose a record of two wins in his first two professional fights.

Bloated squad reason for Chelsea’s poor performance – Cahill

Gary Cahill contends that Chelsea’s underperforming players must perform or risk being let go this summer.

Last Saturday, Brighton easily defeated Cahill’s former team 2-1 at home, dropping the Blues to 11th place in the Premier League.

In the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tonight at Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard’s team will try to overcome a 2-0 deficit against Real Madrid.

Speaking ahead of the game, Cahill said: “Ultimately, if people are not playing up to their level then they leave or they get sold. That’s my experience at the club.

“As soon as you’re not cutting it, you’re out the team or you’re sold and they get the next best thing in.

“As a player I’d be looking and thinking am I playing to the level I should be? If I’m not, I’d be worried in terms of thinking I’m not going to be here.

Chelsea have a mountain to climb after last week's 2-0 defeat at the Bernabeu
Chelsea have a mountain to climb after last week’s 2-0 defeat at the Bernabeu

“The pressure’s on at the big clubs and that’s the difference. Your job’s sometimes easy because you play with better players but the pressure around you is 10 times more than it is when you’re playing at a smaller club.

“If they’re not playing well enough I’m sure the club will move them on, so there’s pressure from everyone.

“Playing for the badge at Chelsea — from my experience and from Lamps’ experience and the lads before us — is to go on and challenge for trophies.

“That’s the whole reason you try and get into the top teams because you want to try and win stuff.”

Cahill, who played for Chelsea between 2012 and 2019, highlighted the troubles that come hand-in-hand with the club’s overloaded squad.

The ex-England international, 37, added: “When you’ve got so many players, man-managing is really, really difficult, especially at a big club. You’ve got players all thinking they should play.

“You’re leaving players on the bench that are slightly not happy, you’re leaving a lot of players in the stand.

“It’s really hard to manage that group of players and get the best out of them.”

Absolutely nothing wrong to have club owners speak with players – Ancelotti

There is nothing wrong with Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly addressing the Chelsea players in the dressing room.

Carlo Ancelotti, the head coach of Real Madrid, does not see anything wrong with Todd Boehly, a co-owner of Chelsea, speaking to the Blues players in the locker room.

Boehly frequently communicates with the team, according to Chelsea interim manager Frank Lampard, who said he is okay with that.

According to former Blues manager Ancelotti, if Lampard is okay with it, he does not see a problem.

Chelsea’s 2-1 home defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday was their third loss in a row, and they are without a win in six (D2 L4), sitting in 11th place in the Premier League.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Chelsea, Ancelotti said: “To have a speech from the owner could be an important thing for the players. The Chelsea moment is not a good moment… if the owner wants to talk to the players, absolutely.”

However, he stopped short of signing off on the idea of Madrid president Florentino Perez doing the same in his dressing room.

“If [Perez] wants to talk to me every game, I would be happy to do that,” he said. “The owner[/president] has the right to know what the decisions of the manager are.”

Los Blancos take a 2-0 lead into the second leg at Stamford Bridge, and Ancelotti knows the job is not yet done, with his team almost throwing away a two-goal advantage at the same stage against the same opposition in last year’s competition.

After winning 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, Madrid were 3-0 down in the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, only for a Rodrygo goal to send it to extra-time before Karim Benzema scored the winner.

“[We have] plenty of motivation,” he said. “It’s a big game, and we know we have to put in a good performance.

“There are still at least 90 minutes to play, and anything can happen, but we will be ready.”

The Italian would not be drawn on links with Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, with reports suggesting Madrid and Manchester City are at the front of the queue for the England international after Liverpool allegedly withdrew their interest due to finances.

“Unfortunately, Bellingham is a Dortmund player, and I don’t like to talk about players of other teams. Sorry,” Ancelotti said.

    He won 13 trophies overall.

Over the course of the period, he contributed 24 assists in addition to his 12 goals.

Real responds to Laporta’s club of the regime allegations

Following Joan Laporta’s “club of the regime, claims ” Real Madrid has responded with a four-and-a-half-minute video criticising their rivals.

At a press conference on Monday, Barcelona president Laporta defended his team against claims that they gave money to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of the referee technical committee.

While prosecutors in Spain pursue accusations for alleged corruption, UEFA is looking into the Blaugrana.

Barca is charged with paying more than €7 million to a Negreira-owned company.

Laporta opted to turn the spotlight on Madrid when claiming his club have no case to answer, suggesting Real have “historically and currently” been favoured by arbitration decisions, attaching it to former Spanish dictator Francisco Franco.

That led Los Blancos to respond with an extraordinary and lengthy video which was broadcast on social media and Real Madrid TV, detailing Barcelona’s links to Franco.

The video initially asked “which is the team of the regime?” in clear response to Laporta’s comments before compiling its case.

“The Camp Nou was inaugurated by Franco’s general minister, Jose Solis Ruiz,” the video stated.

“Barcelona made Franco an honorary member in 1965… presented him with awards on three occasions.”

The video also pointed out Barcelona’s success in comparison to Madrid during the initial Franco era, 1939 until his death in 1975, along with that his administration helped save the club from bankruptcy three times.

Klopp’s best game of the season as Reds ‘chased poor boys on the ball’ in Leeds thrashing

Following Liverpool’s 6-1 thrashing of Leeds in Monday’s Premier League match, Jurgen Klopp praised his team’s “best game in a long time.”

At Elland Road, two players—Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota—each scored a hat trick after Cody Gakpo’s opening goal and Darwin Nunez’s late goal.

With a game remaining against fifth-place Tottenham, the win brought an end to Liverpool’s five-game losing streak in all competitions and brought Klopp’s team closer to the six-point threshold needed to qualify for the Europa League.

The Liverpool manager pinpointed his side’s intensity as a key factor in arresting their previously poor form.

“I think it’s the best game we’ve played this season from all different perspectives and aspects of the game,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“I think we forced a lot of errors, but it was a really good game, sensational goals and counter-pressing – it was the best game for a long time.

“My favourite part was in the 92nd minute we chased the poor boy on the ball from Leeds. I am really happy with that game.”

Klopp elaborated further as he suggested Liverpool have started to click, with a pivotal moment in their season coming after fighting back from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Arsenal on April 9 at Anfield.

He added: “It’s a general thing. To play good football you need stability, the stability you only get from defending, but when you are in this kind of negative flow then you make wrong decisions.

“You think to play better you have to be foremost concerned with the offensive stuff. We can be super offensive-orientated, if we react in the right moment.

“I can’t explain why our counter-pressing didn’t work, but tonight it clicked. It clicked in the second half against Arsenal.

“Tonight I’m not sure how many goals we scored after we won the ball back – that makes all the difference and I think we know that.

“But there is always a bit of difference from knowing and understanding and really feeling it.”

Liverpool are nine points behind fourth-placed Newcastle United and an unlikely Champions League qualification, with Klopp acknowledging a top-four push may be out of the Reds’ reach.

“Where we end up I don’t know, but it will go on after the season, so we need all the games to understand,” he continued.

“The games are super important. If we can’t get anything this season, then we have to build on good performances from this last part of the season.

“I have no clue if we can get close, but I don’t think it’s too important. I would like to see us with the same desire, the same passion, the same understanding that we showed tonight.”

Ciro Immobile tram accident: Lazio star insists he did no wrong amid reports he caused it

Ciro Immobile, a striker for Lazio, has asserted that he “behaved correctly” during a car accident in Rome involving a tram.

Lazio have announced that their captain was injured in the collision that nearly wrecked his car, suffering a fractured rib and a spinal cord damage.

In a recent Instagram Stories statement, Immobile’s attorney denied any misconduct on behalf of his client.

“The thoughts of my client Ciro Immobile, who is shaken over what happened today, go to his two daughters and to the driver of the tram, who he hopes will have a quick recovery,” read the statement.

“[He is] Relieved that nobody suffered serious injuries, aware in this moment that he behaved correctly, he has full trust in the authorities who are completing their investigation.”

Conflicting theories have already emerged regarding the cause of the crash. The driver of the tram told Repubblica: “I remember I passed a green traffic light and saw the car coming at full speed.”

However, the Corriere dello Sport has reported the tram went through a red light before hitting Immobile’s car, something Immobile was seen claiming in videos posted on social media.

“The tram went through a red light,” he said. “Luckily I’m fine, my arm just hurts a little.”

The incident occurred after Immobile had scored in a 3-0 win for Lazio against Spezia on Friday in Serie A.

Immobile now has 12 goals for the season for Lazio from 30 appearances in all competitions.

  • Is Barca’s win against Atletico assured with Pedri, Ousmane Dembele’s return?

Is Barca’s win against Atletico assured with Pedri, Ousmane Dembele’s return?

Barcelona’s main players Pedri, Ousmane Dembele, and Frenkie de Jong have resumed their training regimen as the Blaugrana inch closer to their first league championship in three years.

All three of Barcelona’s regulars have endured protracted absences.

Three players—Dembele in late January, Pedri in mid-February, and De Jong right before the month’s international break—all sustained injuries.

While all three are back on the training pitch, no official return date has been set.

However, it is possible that both De Jong and Pedri will feature in the Blaugrana’s clash with third-placed Atletico Madrid this weekend, according to AS.

The trio’s return comes at a welcome time for Xai’s side.

Barcelona are winless in their last three fixtures, and have now been held scoreless for nearly 400 minutes in all competitions.

The revelation that deputy midfielder Sergi Roberto will be out of up to six weeks only makes their need for reinforcements more pressing.

Pedri and De Jong seem on track to return for their club’s fixture on Saturday, while Dembele might need an extra week to settle back into the side.

See how Lakers LeBron hysterically eavesdropped on opponents convo with coach

During Game 1 of their playoff series, LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers was sported monitoring the Memphis Grizzlies.

With role players thriving against the No. 2 seed, the Lakers pulled off a comfortable 128-112 victory.

The 38-year-old finished his 267th playoff game with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists. He was quiet but effective.

James is also playing in his 51st playoff series, tying Derek Fisher for the most by a player in NBA history, per ESPN.

Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura stole the show for the 17-time NBA champions, scoring a combined 52 points.

    James eavesdrops on Brooks

In the second quarter, Brooks was called over by Grizzlies coach, Taylor Jenkins who wanted to pass a message. As he strode towards Jenkins, James hilariously followed him.

As Brooks leaned in to hear what his coach was saying, the scoring king did the same.

It is common for opposing players to sneak into the opponent’s huddles. Lance Stephenson famously did the same when his Indiana Pacers faced James’s Miami Heat in the playoffs in 2014.

The Grizzlies’ defeat was overshadowed by a hand injury to franchise player, Ja Morant. It is unclear if the point guard will return in Game 2 on Wednesday night.

    Brooks wants to beat James

It was earlier reported on Brooks saying he is looking forward to playing against James, saying it will be a good test for his team.

However, the Grizzlies star added that it would be great to knock the 38-year-old Lakers veteran out of the playoffs early in the contest.

Brooks talked about the legacy of the ‘scoring king’, admitting LeBron’s Los Angeles team would definitely test the from Memphis team.

Man Utd can do well with right positioning – Eriksen after full injury return

After making a full recovery from his injury, Christian Eriksen anticipates that Manchester United will fight to the end of a demanding season.

The 2-0 Premier League victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday marked the Danish international’s first start since January.

After appearing off the bench against Everton and Sevilla, Eriksen is back to help United compete for additional hardware in the FA Cup and Europa League.

But he says it is imperative Erik ten Hag’s side do not neglect the league, as they aim to secure Champions League football for next season.

“Every game now until the end is going to be very important,” he told MUTV. “Someone is going to drop down, [and] someone’s going to go in front.

“So if we stay on the front foot like we are now, we’re going to be in a very good position and be safe for the Champions League before the season is done.”

A post-EFL Cup wobble looks to be behind United, though they conceded twice late on against Sevilla in Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg.

Victory over Forest, particularly with several key stars on the sidelines, emphasised what Eriksen feels to be a strong squad ethos over recent months.

“They’ve impressed me,” he added. “They’ve kept the intensity, they’ve kept the level for how they play. The games, everything, even from the outside, has been looking good.

“If you take into account how we started [the season], it’s a completely different feeling around the club and also on the pitch. The feeling around the boys is really good.”

  • Hodgson got the Eagles flying again, as Palace win in a row

Hodgson got the Eagles flying again, as Palace win in a row

With three victories in a row since taking over as Crystal Palace’s manager, Roy Hodgson has put his critics to shame.

Following the firing of Patrick Vieira, the 75-year-old ex-England manager returned from retirement last month to attempt and keep his boyhood club from being demoted.

Hodgson has rapidly reinvigorated a club that had lost 13 straight games and was headed for the Championship before his arrival, despite much scepticism surrounding his appointment.

We take a closer look at the wily coach’s impressive impact.

    Build from the back

Saturday’s 2-0 win at Southampton was only the third time this season Palace had combined a Premier League victory with a clean sheet.

Though Eberechi Eze’s second-half brace stole the headlines, the Saints started on the front foot and Hodgson’s backline had to weather an early storm.

Their dogged defending — combined with some woeful finishing from the hosts — allowed the Eagles to grow into the contest and eventually show a ruthless cutting edge.

Hodgson explained: “I thought Southampton were good in the first half. They played with a lot of energy and intensity and made runs behind us which stretched our defending capacity to the hilt.

“We got through that, largely down to a back four that did a really good job under that pressure.”

One player who has starred under Hodgson’s watch is creative midfielder Eze.

Remarkably, the ex-QPR ace had managed only four goals in 28 top-flight appearances under Vieira this term, but already has three in three under Hodgson.

The 24-year-old’s technical ability has never been in doubt, with England manager Gareth Southgate previously name-checking Eze as a player firmly in his thoughts.

Hodgson, who coached the Three Lions between 2012 and 2016, thinks his fellow Londoner has what it takes to star on the international stage.

He said: “If you are talking about a player’s ambition, as young as he is, there’s a massive possibility for him to keep improving and doing well with every Premier League game he plays.

“If I was him, I would be saying: ‘I’m so good, that I’m going to make that [England] my ambition’.”

    Confidence is king

While statistics are one way of measuring a team’s improvement, confidence is an equally important factor to consider.

Since gaining a crucial late victory over Leicester, Palace’s players are now playing with a level of freedom not seen for some time.

And when the Eagles took a whopping 31 shots in that clash, it was clear that Hodgson had briefed his men to shake off the fear that had shackled them during Vieira’s final days.

Prior to seeing off the Foxes, the tactician said: “Our main task, as I see it, having taken over a group which is clearly stronger technically than the one we left behind two years ago, is to make sure those players don’t lose faith or start thinking we aren’t capable.

“It’s so easy to lose confidence and make you doubt all the things you think you’re good at doing.”

    Inspired choice

Palace took plenty of stick for disposing of Vieira, who had endured a tough run of fixtures prior to his sacking.

But regardless of whether the Frenchman would have turned things around, Hodgson’s temporary return has proven an inspired choice from the Eagles hierarchy.

Should his remarkable winning run continue, speculation may start relating to an extension of his contract — though all sides are still said to view the venture as a short-term exercise.

If this is indeed Hodgson’s managerial swansong, it is proving a fitting farewell for one of football’s most versatile and underrated coaches.

  • Klopp eager to change Liverpool’s course

Klopp eager to change Liverpool’s course

Jurgen Klopp claims he has the hunger to get the Reds back on track and says Liverpool will attempt to be “smart” with whom they sign during the forthcoming transfer window.

With nine games left and no chance of qualifying for the Champions League, Liverpool has had a miserable season.

They are currently out of all cup competitions and are currently eighth in the Premier League.

A week ago, there were rumours that the club had given up on Jude Bellingham because Borussia Dortmund had raised their asking price, which further infuriated the supporters.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Leeds United on Monday, Klopp said people will just have to “wait and see” when it comes to their transfer plans.

“There’s really nothing to say. You have to wait until we finish our business and then you will see what we did,” he said.

“We have to be ready for praise or criticism. We’ll work from the first day of the new season with the boys and we’ll really go for it – that’s much more important.

“All the rest is speculation from the media. We have nothing to do with that.”

Liverpool have been linked with players such as Mason Mount, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch in recent weeks, and Klopp expressed his belief that those in charge of transfers at the club are well-placed to solve their issues.

“We always try to be smart in our recruitment,” Klopp said. “I am 100 per cent sure that if you gave the power stick to a few people, then next season we’d bring in 20 new players.

“If you gave it to a few others, then we’d bring old players back when we were successful before and stuff like this. We are in charge, that’s what we decided on and let’s go from there.

“It’s an interesting period, very interesting and we always try to be smart in the transfer market, so it’s not completely new to us.”

Klopp is coming to the end of his eighth season in charge at Anfield, with three more years left on his contract, and he remains as driven as ever despite this season’s difficulties.

“Yes, I am still motivated,” he said. “Maybe even more, because now I know everybody here and I feel even more responsible for everything.

“I’ve said it a couple of times, it’s a little bit strange when you have to say ‘I’m fully in’ because maybe people from the outside question it. But no, motivation is absolutely not my problem.”

The German believes he has identified the problems he must solve, and is “looking forward” to the challenge, adding: “The way we defend, that must be much clearer.

“We also have to work on the way we attack and how we control games. It’s a big job, but it’s something I’m looking forward to.”

Such agencies are expected to see a major increase in business as a result of the plans, which reward childminders double for using an agency.

Liberal Democrat chief whip Wendy Chamberlain said the revelations amounted to “another day and another accusation of a Conservative prime ministers bending the rules”.

“After months of Conservative sleaze and scandal, the public just want a government who are focused on the country, rather than saving their own skin.”

Downing Street said the Prime Minister would clarify how the company ownership had been declared as a ministerial interest, rather than to the Commons.

  • UK watchdog to question PM over budget benefits to wife’s childcare agency

UK watchdog to question PM over budget benefits to wife’s childcare agency

The sleaze watchdog of parliament has opened an investigation against Rishi Sunak over allegations that he failed to disclose a conflict of interest.

After it was discovered that a daycare organisation owned in part by the prime minister’s wife, Akshata Murty, would profit from budgetary policy changes, the prime minister came under fire.

While discussing the childcare reforms at a parliamentary committee last month, the prime minister did not bring up his wife’s involvement, despite being prompted to do so.

In an announcement on Monday, the parliamentary commissioner for standards said the prime minister was being probed because of a possible failure to declare an interest.

A Downing Street source confirmed that the investigation related to the childcare agency.

The probe is not the first time Ms Murty’s finances and business interests have put the political spotlight on her husband.

The heiress and venture capitalist, who is worth hundreds of millions of pounds, was criticised after The Independent revealed last year that she was avoiding tax by assuming non-dom status.

She later renounced the status after the revelations caused an outcry.

Mr Sunak was specifically asked about possible conflicts of interest relating to the budget when he appeared at a hearing of the Liaison Committee last month.

Asked whether he had anything to declare at the time by Labour MP Catherine McKinnell, he said: “No, all my disclosures are declared in the normal way.”

A No 10 spokeswoman said: “We are happy to assist the commissioner to clarify how this has been transparently declared as a ministerial interest.”

Koru Kids is one of six private childcare agencies being consulted on a pilot scheme as part of the government’s childcare overhaul announced in the Budget.

The government is to test incentive payments of £600 for childminders joining the profession, and £1,200 if they join through an agency like the one part-owned by the prime minister’s wife.

  • Saka to stay with Arsenal as long as Arteta does – Joleon Lescott

Saka to stay with Arsenal as long as Arteta does – Joleon Lescott

Bukayo Saka, in Joleon Lescott’s opinion will remain an Arsenal player for as long as manager Mikel Arteta does.

Saka has been a key player in his team’s surprising Premier League title challenge, despite missing a penalty when the Gunners lost a two-goal lead in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham.

He has already established himself as a regular for England and has attracted the attention of several major European clubs after being named one of the game’s most promising young players.

But two-time Premier League winner Lescott only sees Saka, 21, leaving North London if Arteta departs the Emirates.

Speaking during a visit to LiveScore HQ, Lescott said: “Saka could play for anyone.

“I don’t think any club would not take him and it wouldn’t surprise me if he went on to play for a Real Madrid or Barcelona.

“But I don’t see it any time soon, if at all. He’s an Arsenal fan and he loves it.

“I think as long as Arteta is manager there, he won’t think about leaving.

“The moment Arteta leaves, then maybe, because I think he’s probably the only manager that could convince him to go elsewhere.”

    Surprising start

Lescott, 40, played alongside Arteta for three years at Everton and has been pleasantly surprised by the Spaniard’s successful transition to the dugout.

Asked if Arteta was proving himself to be a world-class manager, he said: “Well, certainly as a coach. I think they’re slightly different things.

“But definitely, he’s got to be regarded up there because Arsenal haven’t been real contenders for so long and we’ve seen how hard it is for other coaches to do that.

“I think to create that environment takes time and obviously Arsenal were right to believe in the process.”

Lescott admits he did not expect the Gunners to still be fighting for league glory this late in the campaign.

The former England ace added: “I knew Mikel had the abilities to be a coach but I didn’t see it going the way it has so early in his managerial career.

“The consistency Arsenal have shown throughout the season is amazing. I was sceptical as to whether they could maintain it when Gabriel Jesus got injured.

“But Eddie Nketiah came in and did exceptionally well, while the team found a way to win — and I think that’s been key.”

  • Guardiola praises the’special connection’ between Haaland and De Bruyne

Guardiola praises the’special connection’ between Haaland and De Bruyne

Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne scored the eighth Premier League goal of the year, and Pep Guardiola praised their “special connection” after the game.

The two played a crucial role in City’s 3-1 victory over mediocre Leicester City on Saturday.

Haaland equaled Mohamed Salah’s record for the most goals in a season (38 games) by scoring twice to bring his league total to 32.

His second goal came when he latched onto a precise De Bruyne throughball, marking the eighth time the Belgium international has teed up a Haaland strike in the top flight this term.

That is one off the joint record of nine, shared by Tottenham duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min and ex-Liverpool forwards Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler.

“I think the connection between Erling and Kevin is obvious,” Guardiola said. “I think Kevin needs the runners to do his biggest quality.

“Erling needs an assist player to make his positive runs. It’s a natural way. We talk a lot about ‘take a look at him when he runs and put the ball there’.

“When the ball is correct, and he has this space, he is unstoppable. We know it. But they have a special connection and you can see this.

“But what I like about that second goal is Kevin won the duel. I love that. He won the duel and after that, the run and finish from Erling was fantastic.”

De Bruyne’s eight assists to Haaland is three more than any other Premier League player has managed to a team-mate this term, with Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes having set up Marcus Rashford on five occasions.

Victory over Leicester, combined with Arsenal’s 2-2 draw against West Ham, means City are just four points off the Gunners with a game in hand.

The title rivals will meet on April 26, in what looks set to be the decisive clash.

  • Negreira scandal: Joan Laporta says Tebas is after Barca’s reputation

Negreira scandal: Joan Laporta says Tebas is after Barca’s reputation

Blaugrana head Laporta has also asserted that Barca is the target of retaliation owing to their backing for the Super League plans that failed and sought to usurp UEFA’s authority.

Regarding Barca’s alleged wrongdoing, he continued, “Nothing is accidental. When Barca starts to emerge from a tunnel, this campaign starts. We have financially rescued Barça. As competitors, we are doing well.

I see a very good reason for trying to sportly undermine us here. We must therefore be more unified than ever.

Coincidentally, the campaign also goes off the rails when FCB refuses to sign the contract with CVC.

We do not yield to their desires. For Barca’s financial interests, we prefer other, much better alternatives. It is clear that this is not an accident.

Legal proceedings are underway, while Barca face the threat of sanctions from domestic and European governing bodies.

There have been suggestions that they could be barred from competing in the 2023-24 Champions League, but Laporta believes that the efforts of La Liga president Javier Tebas to tarnish Barca’s reputation will come to nothing.

Laporta has said: “If I have spoken of Tebas it has been because, as president of the LFP, he is behaving absolutely irresponsibly.

He is trying to harm the reputation of FCB.

He has a series of constant actions, with his statements, in which he validates hypotheses that are false.

He says that Barca had recognised that these services did not exist and that is not the case.

Thanks to the compliance work, from 2014 to 2018. Mr. Tebas tried to get UEFA to participate in this public lynching.

“Initially, Mr. Ceferin made some statements, but now he is acting prudently. So far, Ceferin has not fallen into Mr. Tebas’s trap.

I think that throughout the history of football there have been real scandals. Here a false hypothesis is validated.

From the inputs I have, UEFA understands that this is in a judicial process. I understand that it will be pronounced when there is a trial. We will carry on as normal.”

Blaugrana supremo Laporta has also claimed that Barca are being targeted due to their support for the failed Super League plans that threatened to wrestle power away from UEFA.

He added on the allegations made against Barca: “Nothing is accidental. This campaign comes when Barca begins to come out of a tunnel. We have saved Barça financially. We are competing well too.

I see here a clear reason to try to destabilise us sportingly. That is why we have to be more united than ever.

“Coincidentally, the campaign also explodes when FCB does not sign the agreement with CVC. We do not bow to their interests.

We prefer other much better options for Barca’s economic interests. It is evident that this is no coincidence.

This campaign also occurs when Barca is working for a new European competition format.

They are trying to get UEFA to join this public lynching. It is no coincidence. This campaign is gaining momentum just as FCB awards the Camp Nou works to an international company.

All these coincidences explain why. This added to what I have been explaining before.”

  • Thierry Henry-Haaland difference: ‘Henry has got something, Haaland’s not amazing – Kolo Toure

Thierry Henry-Haaland difference: ‘Henry has got something, Haaland’s not amazing – Kolo Toure

Kolo Toure, a former defender for Manchester City and Arsenal, has explained the distinction between Erling Haaland, a hot-shot striker, and his former teammate Thierry Henry.

The Norwegian attacker tied Mohamed Salah’s record for most goals in a single season with his 32nd Premier League goal against Leicester City.

Haaland, who scored twice against the Foxes, needs two more goals to tie the 34 goals per season records held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.

The 22-year-old’s performances has seen him draw comparisons with some of the greats to ever play in the Premier League, including Thierry Henry.

While analyzing the qualities of the Man City forward, Toure revealed where Haaland lacked in comparison with Henry.

“For me when I look at him he is strong, powerful. Technically, he is not unbelievable. You can see his feet is not amazing but what he does is that when he is in the box, he always makes sure he is in the right position, very aggressive and makes double movement in his run.

He fakes you to go forward and stays back and sometimes fakes you to stay back and he moves upfront,” Toure told Sky Sports.

“For me Thierry Henry had something, if you feed him great. If you don’t, he will come back take the ball, dribble one or two players and score. I don’t think Haaland has that. Very rarely, you see him take the ball and attack tow players and score.”

Toure and Henry were part of the Arsenal invincible team that won the league title in 2003/04 season.

    Haaland equals Salah’s record

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Erling Haaland continued with his fine goalscoring form after he bagged a first-half brace against Leicester City on April 15.

The Manchester City striker scored from the penalty spot before chipping the ball over Daniel Iversen to add to John Stones’ early opener.

Haaland’s goals took him to 32 goals for the campaign, equalling Mohamed Salah’s best season goal tally that he set in the 2017/2018 season.

  • Arsenal could win the Premier League if they do these 5 things

Arsenal could win the Premier League if they do these 5 things

Despite having an outstanding season, Arsenal is in danger of losing the Premier League title this year.

The Arsenal have been the overwhelming favourites to win the league this season for weeks, with defending champions Man City being forced to play catch-up.

The team led the championship race by eight points, giving Mikel Arteta’s men the appearance of seizing control.

However, two damaging draws against Liverpool and West Ham United are threatening to extinguish their hopes of conquering the English top flight for the first time in close to two decades.

In both fixtures, the north Londoners surrendered a two-goal advantage to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Arsenal’s latest stalemate came at the hands of West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday, April 16.

The visitors raced to a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes before the Hammers sprung a comeback via Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen to settle for a draw.

The result left Arsenal just four points above second-placed Man City, who still have a game in hand.

What Arsenal must do to win EPL

For the Emirates dwellers to be crowned Premier League champions this season, a couple of things need to go their way.

With only seven games left to end the season, Arsenal fans will be keeping their fingers crossed as the campaign enters its homestretch.

Sports Brief now takes a look at five things that must happen for Arsenal to cart home the coveted crown.

    1. Avoid further slip-ups

At this point, Arsenal cannot afford any further slip-ups if they are to win the Premier League.

Arteta’s men must hit the ground running in their subsequent matches, starting with their upcoming clash against relegation battlers Southampton.

    2. Hope for Man City to falter

Man City often have the scariest run towards the end of a Premier League campaign.

For the longest time, especially during Pep Guardiola’s tenure, City do not drop as many points during the run-in.

But with the side still competing in the FA Cup and the Champions League, it is almost likely they could drop some points on the way.

    3. See off Man City

Arsenal’s trip to the Etihad Stadium has been touted as a possible decider for this season’s EPL title race.

For context, Pep Guardiola has already described the cracker as a final.

One thing Arsenal must have on top of their agenda is to pick points in the encounter.

    4. Avoid mental breakdown

Arsenal stars are bound to suffer a mental breakdown in the coming days.

This is especially so due to their recent outings where they have dropped points from winning positions.

Mikel Arteta and his backroom staff will have to find a way to keep the squad motivated and in high spirits ahead of the run-in.

    5. Arteta’s tactics with the squad

Mikel Arteta has an almost fully fit squad to select from in the upcoming matches.

The Spaniard’s biggest headache is perhaps how to line up in his attack after the return of Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah.

Arteta’s squad rotation and tactics are expected to play a key role in how the remainder of their campaign pans out.

    Haaland appears to troll Arsenal

In news related to Arsenal’s draw with West Ham, Sports Brief reported on Erling Haaland’s reaction to the result on social media.

The Norwegian posted a photo of himself on Twitter moments after the cracker with the caption ‘Mood’ in what is seen as a jibe at his team’s title rivals.

Where would Lukaku go as inter has no plans of renewing negotiation with Chelsea?

There are no current plans to pursue transfer negotiations with Chelsea, and Romelu Lukaku’s future at Inter appears to be up for grabs.

The Serie A giants lured the Belgian international striker back to San Siro in the summer of 2022, a year after selling him to Chelsea Bridge for £98 million ($122 million).

Lukaku has struggled to find his footing since moving back to Italy, scoring only seven goals in 24 appearances across all competitions this season.

Only three efforts have come in the league, with two of those strikes coming from the penalty spot.

Lukaku’s last Serie A goal from open play came in a season opener against Lecce in August 2022.

With the 29-year-old struggling for form and fitness this term, Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Inter will not be looking to bring him back for 2023-24.

Instead of holding more talks with Chelsea, Inter will be turning their attention elsewhere.

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino and Borussia Monchengladbach star Marcus Thuram are said to be in the Nerazzurri’s thoughts, as they are both heading towards free agency.

Argentina-born Italy international Mateo Retegui, who is currently on loan at Tigre, is another top target for the Milan giants.

With no deal for Lukaku on the cards, the burly Belgian will be forced to return to west London this summer – with his contract at Chelsea due to run until 2026.

Utd’s Alex Fergusson warned Danny Welbeck against playing for Black Stars – Dan Kwaku Yeboah alleges

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Fergusson allegedly prevented Danny Welbeck from changing his nationality from England to Ghana, according to Ghanaian sports presenter Dan Kwaku Yeboah.

Danny Welbeck, a graduate of the Manchester United academy, made his Three Lions debut in a friendly match against the Black Stars in March 2011. The Ghana Football Association began pursuing Welbeck when he was 18 years old, but they were unsuccessful.

According to Dan Kwaku Yeboah, Danny Welbeck had agreed to play for the Black Stars after he was convinced by the legendary Asamoah Gyan who at the time was playing in the Premier League for Sunderland.

However, the move was blocked after former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Fergusson threatened Danny Welbeck who was a teenager at the time.

Dan Kwaku Yeboah alleged that Sir Alex Fergusson told Welbeck that switching allegiance to play for Ghana will end his Manchester United career.

“Look, Asamoah Gyan singlehandedly was able to convince Danny Welbeck to come and play for Ghana. Danny Welbeck agreed to play for Ghana.”

“Asamoah said a day before the boy decided officially, Sir Alex Fergusson heard about it and threatened him not to play for Ghana because that would be the end of his Manchester United career,” Dan Kwaku Yeboah said while discussing how the GFA can use legends to attract Ghanaian players born abroad.

Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck in December 2022 said there was no official proposal from the Ghana Football Association for him to switch nationality to play for the Black Stars.

“There wasn’t like an official approach from Ghana to come and play for them or anything like that, so it wasn’t as hard as a decision like people would have thought,” Welbeck said in an interview with UK-based Ghanaian musician, Michael Dapaah.

Ukrainian football team Shakhtar donates to wounded troops and war orphans

Formerly, Shakhtar Donetsk’s goals were limited to winning awards, but now the illustrious Ukrainian football club has loftier goals, like funding medical care for injured soldiers abroad and helping orphans find new homes.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the club, one of only two Ukrainian teams to win a European club championship after winning the 2009 UEFA Cup, has spent all available funds through its foundation Shakhtar Social.

They paid 100,000 euros ($110,000) each to send five seriously injured soldiers to hospitals in Israel, the US, and Spain for medical care.

“You cannot imagine what injuries they have,” Shakhtar CEO Sergey Palkin told AFP in a phone interview.

“Two of them are paralysed, others suffered catastrophic wounds in a rocket detonation.

“It is very difficult to control one’s emotions when one sees them.

“We want to give them a chance of a normal life. These hospitals have very sophisticated procedures.

“The families cannot sustain those expenses and the government has no capability to provide this financial help so we are taking care of them.”

Children have suffered too amid the death and destruction. Some have been killed, some have been left as orphans and others have been forcibly taken to Russia.

“We have looked after 31 children, who lost their parents due to the war and we have found them 17 families,” said Palkin.

“We provide living expenses, medical treatments, iPads and try to normalise the situation from a psychological point of view.

“These children have been left traumatised by the violent loss of their parents.”

Shakhtar’s Ukrainian international defender Ivan Petryak knows what it is like to lose a family member.

His father-in-law Ivan Petrenko was killed in action in the Donbas in May last year.

“The guys who were with him saw him die,” Petryak told AFP.

“For us as a family it is the worst situation as we cannot find the body and we cannot make the funeral to say goodbye.

“This is the worst for us as we do not know what to do as we have no information about him.”

    ‘Bit of a circus’

Shakhtar have bitter experience of what it is like to be displaced. The club hosted matches in the 2012 European Championship but two years later they were on the move after the Russians seized Crimea.

They played in Kyiv before the war and are now in Lviv.

Little did they realise they would play host to more refugees from the Donbas region eight years later as the Russian army swept in once again.

“We accepted more than 2,000 refugees from the eastern part of Ukraine,” said Palkin.

“We provide food, medical treatment, including psychological treatment, helping people to concentrate on what they should do regarding their next steps.

“Many lost houses, apartments, their passports and personal documents.”

Petryak says he cannot envisage a scenario where he takes to a pitch in the future against a Russian team — “they are like zombies” he says of the Russian players and their support of President Vladimir Putin.

Equally he is dumbfounded that IOC President Thomas Bach has left the door open for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in the Olympics in Paris next year.

“The situation is not possible,” he said.

“Bach is very wrong. Every day they kill our children, people, athletes.

“More than 200 athletes have been killed and he wants to say Russia and Belarus are allowed at the Olympic Games. How is it possible?

“It is unbelievable. For me it is a bit of a circus.”

Petryak says he understands why the vast majority of foreign players went out on loan once the conflict took hold.

He is extremely proud though that despite losing a huge amount of Brazilian talent, the club still finished third in their Champions League group and reached the last 16 of the Europa League this season.

“Some athletes have taken up the gun,” he said.

“My team, we support the country with money and we can give more from this side.

“I am not criticising those who took up the gun but we feel the better we play, the more money we can send to the the army and other athletes.

“We are like a big family.”

  • Sevilla coach calls squad to shake off binding ropes, compete for peace of mind

Sevilla coach calls squad to shake off binding ropes, compete for peace of mind

Jose Luis Mendilibar, the manager of Sevilla, wants his squad to “release the cords that tie us” and rise to the challenge of Thursday’s Europa League duel with Manchester United.

Sunday’s 2-0 LaLiga victory over Valencia was achieved despite Mendilibar’s perception that the performance lacked something.

He hopes that his squad reaches its peak at the ideal time and views it as a big blessing that they can still win even when they are not playing at their best.

Sevilla’s comeback in Manchester has tied the quarterfinal match at 2-2 going into the second leg.

Speaking after his team’s victory at Mestalla, Mendilibar said: “We have to gain confidence. Sometimes you don’t play well and the result is with you. That makes you think that when you play well, you’re going to do even better.

“It’s going to give us peace of mind to be able to compete against Manchester on Thursday.”

Messy defending from a corner allowed Loic Bade to sneak in to poach Sevilla’s opener against Valencia in the 55th minute, before Suso’s clean hit into the left corner in the 75th minute sealed the win.

Valencia had Ilaix Moriba sent off late on as the game ran away from them.

“We’re having success in front of goal,” said Mendilibar. “We’ve scored two goals in each game, It’s what’s giving us life.”

It is true that Sevilla have scored twice in each of their last four matches, winning twice and being held to draws in the other two games.

These games have all followed Mendilibar’s appointment on March 21 as successor to Jorge Sampaoli, with Sevilla improving step by step.

“We hope to be able to remove the ropes that bind us,” Mendilibar said.

United also won 2-0 on their travels on Sunday, beating Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

Mendilibar knows the threat Erik ten Hag’s team will pose, but likes Sevilla’s future prospects and said: “We hope to be able to bring quality into play from now on, not just with goals.”

  • ‘We are not good’ and it is tough’ – Chelsea’s loanee Denis Zakaria admits

‘We are not good’ and it is tough’ – Chelsea’s loanee Denis Zakaria admits

Denis Zakaria has acknowledged Chelsea’s terrible performance against Brighton in the Premier League and said he felt horrible for the supporters.

Denis Zakaria expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance during the 2-1 loss to Brighton on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.

The player also revealed that interim coach Frank Lampard had given the team some direct feedback following the defeat, but he declined to say what was said.

He also warned the Blues that they did need to play a lot better if they want to come back from a 2-0 deficit against Real Madrid from the first leg to qualify for the Champions League semi-final.

“Yes, I think it is good [that Lampard is honest] because we need more. We are not good. It is tough. It is difficult and we feel bad for the fans because we cannot play like that. It is tough and we have to do better. It is hard.

“We are now going to do everything we can to come through the game against Real Madrid and win this game. We will give everything until the end.”

The Swiss midfielder, who joined Chelsea on loan from Juventus in the summer, has appeared in just 11 matches for the club thus far. He featured in the club’s starting lineup against Brighton for the first time since January.

The Blues are winless in their last six matches in all competitions and are on a three-match losing streak at the moment.

  • Ancelotti ‘sad’ over current state of former club Chelsea

Ancelotti ‘sad’ over current state of former club Chelsea

A little less than two weeks ago, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly made the call to legendary Blues player Frank Lampard, asking him to return and try to right the ship.

It might have been Carlo Ancelotti speaking to the American in a different reality.

Ancelotti, who will be playing for Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg match on Tuesday, will instead return to the Stamford Bridge dugout simply as an adversary.

It was Madrid president Florentino Perez who brought the Italian back for a second stint at the helm, after Zinedine Zidane walked away again in 2021.

Ancelotti’s Madrid picked off the Blues in the first game, carving out a 2-0 lead through Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio, and they could have added further goals as they controlled proceedings.

At the other end former Chelsea duo Thibaut Courtois and Antonio Rudiger made important saves and blocks to leave Lampard’s side empty-handed.

Ancelotti’s return to Chelsea evokes warm memories of one of the finest ever Premier League sides, which he led to the club’s first ever league and FA Cup double in 2010, halcyon days in stark contrast to the Blues’ recent slump.

The Italian’s Chelsea side featured big characters including Didier Drogba, John Terry, Michael Ballack and Lampard himself, and they racked up 7-0, 7-1 and 8-0 triumphs at the Bridge as they strolled to domestic glory.

Chelsea’s current hodgepodge of players lacks both the leadership and quality of that group, as was laid painfully bare in their defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu last week.

“I am sad, yes,” said Ancelotti before that clash. “I have a fantastic memory of this club, of the people that are still working there.

“I’m a supporter of Chelsea, of course, because I spent two really nice years there.

“I think and I hope Lampard will be able to do a fantastic job with them.”

It was a generous line from Ancelotti, but the Italian will hope his coach is nowhere near as magnanimous on Tuesday under the lights in London.

Ancelotti was let go by then-owner Roman Abramovich in 2011, ending his brief but memorable two-season spell in charge.

    Safe hands

Madrid are aiming to win a record-extending 15th Champions League, defending the title after their triumph over Liverpool last season, and looked streets ahead of the 2021 victors in the Spanish capital.

Despite not being first choice — or second, or third — for the job, Ancelotti was chosen as a safe pair of hands and also helped Madrid lift La Liga last season too.

Like Zidane before him, is showing excellent man management is a vital skill for Los Blancos coaches — although not the only one, as he was at pains to point out.

“I am ‘fantastic’ at managing but there are other things, because this team is well-trained,” said Ancelotti before the first leg.

“If we win the Copa del Rey, we will have won every title possible in two years and there are teams who won’t win that in their whole lives.”

Ancelotti has kept squad players like Dani Ceballos, Nacho Fernandez and Asensio both hungry and helpful, with the latter netting again at Cadiz at the weekend. Most of them, anyway.

Former Chelsea star Eden Hazard has remained a fringe presence and his former fans will hope not to see him on Tuesday –- if the Belgian appears, it will mean Madrid have clinched progression and the key players are getting rested.

“The door is open and it’s up to us to kick it open further,” said Lampard after the first leg defeat, angling for a comeback.

It will be music to Ancelotti’s ears, with his team so lethal on the break against desperate sides and the coach wise enough to play to their strengths.

The 63-year-old has lifted the trophy six times, twice as a player, and four times in the dug-out, recently observing he is approaching his 1,300th game as a coach.

His experience and stability are in stark contrast to Chelsea’s haphazard project, and on Tuesday they may help him highlight chasms where he once left silverware and memories.
