PSG-Messi contract: Parisians seem to want Messi out

Given that his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires at the end of this year, Lionel Messi’s club future is still in doubt.

Although there has been rumour that the 35-year-old will be returning to Barcelona, the two parties have not yet reached an agreement on a new contract.

Also, Messi has been linked to high-profile transfers to teams in Saudi Arabia and the United States.

Paris Saint-Germain are willing to let Lionel Messi exit on a free transfer in the upcoming off-season, reports the Sunday Mirror.

Contract talks between Messi and PSG have stalled in the months following Argentina’s World Cup triumph, having reportedly been close to penning an extension.

The report claims PSG are “in no rush” to extend Messi’s deal as interest, with president Nasser Al-Khelaifi looking to run the club in a more sustainable way, relying less on star power.

  • Madrid’s Rodrigo takes criticisms with cool head because even ‘Ronaldo got criticized here’

Madrid’s Rodrigo takes criticisms with cool head because even ‘Ronaldo got criticized here’

Antonio Rudiger has shared his strategy for dealing with stress at Real Madrid.

The aggressive central defender made the move from Chelsea to Real Madrid last summer, and despite his early-season struggles to earn a spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting lineup, he has improved greatly.

According to Transfermarkt, Rudiger has played 42 times for Los Blancos in all competitions and is still a vital member of the team as the season comes to a close.

When quizzed on how he has managed to deal with the ever-demanding nature of the club’s fanbase, the 30-year-old suggested he has devised a mechanism which helps him.

He cited Madrid’s record goal scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, current club captain Karim Benzema and mercurial midfielder Luka Modric as his source of inspiration when dealing with pressure.

For me, it’s very simple. Because Cristiano got criticized here, Benzema got criticized here, Luka Modrić, all of them” Rudiger said as quoted by MadridXtra.

He added: “Who am I not to get criticized?”

    Why Rudiger deliberately makes mistakes

Meanwhile, Rudiger has disclosed he deliberately made mistakes in games last season in order to get the crowd charged, Sports Brief reported.

The 29-year-old was a key figure in Chelsea’s backline under Thomas Tuchel and produced a number of masterclass performances as the Blues advanced to two domestic cup finals.

Rudiger, who was a fan favourite with the Chelsea faithful, has admitted that he sometimes deliberately made mistakes to wake up the “quiet” crowd.

    Fans hurl objects at Rudiger

It was earlier reported that supporters of Cadiz did not make life easy for Real Madrid following their La Liga encounter last week.

German defender Antonio Rudiger, in particular, found himself in the bad books of the fans, despite gifting one of their own with his shirt after the game.

Cadiz supporters threw objects at the Madrid star after the game, while he went to give one of the fans his match shirt. They also swore at him.

Do not go to PSG -Didier Drogba allegedly warns Victor Osimhen

Didier Drogba, a Chelsea stalwart, has advised Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen not to join Paris Saint-Germain this summer, saying the French club is not a place for him to continue playing football.

Given his outstanding performances for Napoli, where he currently leads the goalscoring table, Osimhen has so far this season captivated the hearts of many football fans in Nigeria and Italy.

This has made the former Lille strongman become a target for many clubs most especially him being linked with a move to the Premier League with clubs like Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal said to be interested.

Osimhen on the other hand has not really made his final decision about where to play his game next season as he is currently focusing on helping Napoli win the title.

And to make things sweet, Napoli are in good position to win the league title and Osimhen could also be the first Nigerian to take home the Golden Boot award in the Serie A.

    Drogba’s advise to Osimhen

According to the report on Naija Footballer, Drogba who was one of the finest African strikers to have played in the Premier League made it clear that Osimhen should not move to France.

Berbatov wants Osimhen at Man United

It had reported how ahead of the forthcoming summer transfer window, former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov disclosed that he wants to see Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are also eyeing the Spurs forward Harry Kane, but Berbatov believes that the England striker is already of age.

United are desperate to sign a proven striker and are already making moves to land Kane before the start of the coming season.

The 29-year-old has already notched in over 200 Premier League goals, including 23 this season, but he is yet to win any major trophy in his career.

  • Nagelsmann seems to rule out a run for Chelsea

Nagelsmann seems to rule out a run for Chelsea

Julian Nagelsmann appeared to confirm rumours that he is not a contender to replace Graham Potter as Chelsea’s head coach.

As the German powerhouses attempt to fight off Borussia Dortmund’s bid for their Bundesliga crown, Nagelsmann was unexpectedly fired by Bayern Munich last month. Thomas Tuchel took his place.

Nagelsmann gained a lot of supporters during his excellent tenures with Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig before guiding Bayern to the Bundesliga championship last season. As a result, Nagelsmann was instantly mentioned as a possible long-term replacement for Graham Potter at Stamford Bridge.

Nagelsmann reportedly held talks with Chelsea over taking the job at the end of the campaign, but widespread reports on Friday suggested he had withdrawn from the running.

Asked about those reports by Sky Sports in Germany, Nagelsmann said: “To cancel something, you have to commit to something.”

Chelsea sit 11th in the Premier League table after failing to win any of their past five games in the competition, their most recent league victory coming against Leicester City under Potter on March 11.

Since appointing Frank Lampard as caretaker manager until the end of the season, Chelsea have lost four successive games across all competitions, a run that saw them eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Nagelsmann could still be set for a move to the Premier League, however, with the 35-year-old being linked with Tottenham as they search for a permanent replacement for Antonio Conte.

He has also been suggested as a potential candidate to take over from Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, though the Italian recently said he has no intention of leaving Los Blancos at the end of the season despite links with Brazil.

  • Arteta still love ‘players more than ever’ after Southampton draw

Arteta still love ‘players more than ever’ after Southampton draw

Mikel Arteta says he “loves” his Arsenal team “more than ever” after they rallied to earn a 3-3 draw against Southampton.

After falling down by two goals inside of the first 14 minutes of Friday’s game at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal was forced to settle for a point.

Before halftime, Gabriel Martinelli gave the Saints hope after Carlos Alcaraz had scored one and helped Theo Walcott on another. But, Duje Caleta-Car headed in the third goal for the Saints.

But Martin Odegaard curled in an impressive goal in the 88th minute and Bukayo Saka had Arsenal on level terms in added time to deny the Premier League’s bottom side.

The Gunners have now dropped points in three successive matches, but Arteta was pleased with the way his side fought back against Southampton.

“We made it very difficult again for ourselves – mistakes are part of football, but the way we reacted, I love my players more than ever,” he told Sky Sports.

“It is incredible. We were on the way back, we conceded again with a sloppy goal but in the end we should have won the game.

“We created enough chances and opportunities, but it didn’t happen and we are disappointed.

“You can’t concede three goals in this league. If you concede three like we did in a sloppy way it is very difficult to win matches.

“This young team reacts in a way that is incredible. When it is against the odds but the chances they created and the spirit they had it was a joy to watch.

“The message is clear that I love them. We are down and they are more willing than anybody to win it. You can see that spirit and fight in the dressing room.”

Arsenal are five points clear of second-place Manchester City, but they have played two games more than their in-form title rivals and travel to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

“It hasn’t changed,” Arteta said. “Obviously the task is even bigger but now we have to do the simple things better and cut out mistakes and then you will win games.

“The [Man City game] is not a final because there are still six games to go. The concern is turning around these moments especially if the players in some moments are in doubt.

“In football you go through moments when you make errors and are not in a good moment but you have to come away from that.

“I have not seen anybody hiding – the opposite. They are willing to do more and more.

“Today is a good example of the level they can show, how capable they are to play against a different type of opponent. The spirit is incredible and we have to try and do it again.”

  • Messi’s heroic assist to Mbappe split the Angers defence

Messi’s heroic assist to Mbappe split the Angers defence

On Friday night against Angers, the Paris Saint-Germain duo Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe once again united to irreversible effect.

Mbappe’s goal gave the Parisians the lead after just 9 minutes. Following Messi’s magnificent performance, the Frenchman wasted no time in scoring twice just 17 minutes later.

The Argentine sensation picked up the ball from about 40 yards away and was able to provide an exquisite through ball that split the Angers defence.

Mbappe took care of the rest, around the custodian before putting the ball in the back of the net without error.

Mbappe made sure to appreciate Messi’s genius and immediately joined the Argentine in celebration after scoring.

It was Messi’s 15th Ligue 1 assist of the year when he set up Mbappe.

    How PSF defeated Angers

Sports Brief reported that Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain took another step towards securing the Ligue 1 title despite an unconvincing performance in beating bottom club Angers 2-1 on Friday.

Mbappe scored the opener in the ninth minute and added another before the half-hour mark to move clear as the French top flight’s leading marksman on 22 goals for the campaign.

It looked like PSG might go on to record a big victory but they eased off in the second half and relegation-bound Angers pulled a goal back late on through Sada Thioub.

    Barcelona confident of signing Messi

Sports Brief earlier reported that Barcelona are not just itching to sign Lionel Messi to improve their results on the pitch, but also intend to use his return to Camp Nou to boost the economic growth of the club.

  • ‘He was born for it’ – PSG boss singles out Kylian Mbappe for praise after Angers defeat

‘He was born for it’ – PSG boss singles out Kylian Mbappe for praise after Angers defeat

After Kylian Mbappe scored two goals against Angers on Friday, April 21, Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier showered him with adulation.

PSG defeated Angers 2-1 in the first half thanks to a pair of goals from Mbappe, moving Les Parisiens one step closer to a record-tying 11th Ligue 1 championship.

Following a lovely pass from Juan Bernat, the 24-year-old scored the opening goal for the visitors after just nine minutes.

He then doubled his tally and PSG’s lead with an even better assist from Lionel Messi, four minutes from the half-hour mark, Sportstar reports

Angers, on the other hand, were rewarded for their persistence with a consolation goal, setting up a nervy finish, but PSG held on to seal the vital win to go nine points clear at the summit of the table, albeit playing one more game than closest rivals, Marseille.

Following the end of the game, Galtier waxed lyrical on Mbappe.

“Kylian is a great competitor,” Galtier told a press conference as quoted by Sportskeeda.

“He [Kylian Mbappe] scores so the team can win. He has this obsession to break records, to always be the first.

There is this championship title but also that of the top scorer in Ligue 1. He’s made like that. He is a competitor. He was born for it, and when he doesn’t score, he feels it.”

    Messi and Mbappe’s devastating combo

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe combined to a devastating effect once again against Angers in stunning style on Friday evening, Sports Brief reported.

The Parisians opened the scoring after just 9 minutes thanks to Mbappe. The Frenchman then wasted no time to grab a brace 17 minutes later after a majestic display from Messi.

The Argentine phenom picked the ball up some 40 yards out and managed to provide a sublime through ball that pierced Angers’ backline.

    Mbappe urged to join Chelsea

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that former France winger Florent Malouda has opened up on his consistent campaign for Kylian Mbappe to join Premier League side Chelsea.

Mbappe is currently tied to Paris Saint-Germain until 2024 and could extend his stay in the French capital by one more year amid swirling reports of a potential move in the summer.

Amid the uncertainty surrounding his future, Florent Malouda wants Mbappe to consider a move to the Premier League, revealing he has been trying to convince his compatriot to join Chelsea.

  • Gabriel Jesus blames ‘lack of experience and focus’ for crushing Arsenal title win hope

Gabriel Jesus blames ‘lack of experience and focus’ for crushing Arsenal title win hope

Despite their strong start to the season, Gabriel Jesus has outlined two major factors that are jeopardising Arsenal’s title hopes.

After a remarkable run of results under Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal have become the clear favourites to defeat Manchester City to the Premier League title this season.

That fantasy, however, is set to come crashing down after Arteta’s team lost three of their most recent games.

The north Londoners have suffered three damaging draws in all those matches, with the most recent ending in a 3-3 epic draw at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The Sun reports Arsenal had to come from two goals down to secure the point after Carlos Alcaraz and Theo Walcott handed the Saints an early lead.

The result still has the Gunners topping the charts with a five-point advantage, with only six games left to end the season.

However, Man City do have an edge over them as they have two games in hand, with both teams also scheduled to face off at the Etihad in what has been touted as a potential title decider.

Why Arsenal’s title bid is crumbling

Jesus, who has won the Premier League title on four occasions, has now assessed Arsenal’s title bid as the season enters a critical stage.

Speaking after Arsenal’s draw against Southampton, the Brazilian striker highlighted two key reasons why the north Londoners have stuttered in recent weeks.

According to the former Man City striker, lack of experience and focus has contributed to Arsenal’s recent struggles.

  • Arsenal emotional after Southampton draw breaks their hearts

Arsenal emotional after Southampton draw breaks their hearts

After the final whistle of their Premier League match against Southampton on Friday, April 21, Arsenal’s stars struggled to contain their emotions.

During the game, the Gunners lost for the third time in a row, dealing Mikel Arteta’s team yet another setback in their title defence.

The north Londoners were looking to bounce back after dropping points in their most recent match against West Ham United by defeating the relegation-threatened Saints.

However, The Telegraph reports the league leaders faltered yet again, with two late goals from Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard rescuing a point for them at the Emirates.

Carlos Alcaraz opened the scoring for the visitors just seconds into the kick-off before former Arsenal ace Theo Walcott doubled the advantage for the Saints in the 14th minute.

While Gabriel Martinelli went on to draw one back for the hosts in the 20th minute, Southampton restored their two-goal advantage in the 66th minute via Duje Caleta-Car.

The visitors looked on course to sink Arsenal, only for Odegaard and Saka to score late on to earn their side a 3-3 draw.

    Arsenal stars in tears

Emotions got the better of Arsenal stars after the full-time whistle, as they were spotted in tears shortly after the match.

Odegaard was among the Arsenal stars who were pictured dejected as it dawned on them they were on the verge of bottling the league.

According to The Sun, substitute Reiss Nelson also collapsed to the ground in despair, while Gabriel Magalhaes was also on his knees in frustration.

Whereas Arteta’s men have a five-point advantage over second-placed Man City, they still have to contend with a trip to the Etihad and a clash against rivals Chelsea before the season ends.

Additionally, City, who are the defending champions, now have two games in hand as the campaign enters its homestretch.

  • Liverpool’s Klopp believes Nunez is a backing ‘long-term project’

Liverpool’s Klopp believes Nunez is a backing ‘long-term project’

Darwin Nunez, according to Jurgen Klopp, is “a long-term project” at Liverpool and the striker “still adapting” to life with the Reds.

The Uruguayan international, who went to Anfield from Benfica before the current campaign for an initial sum of £64 million, has scored 15 goals in 37 games in his first season with Liverpool, who are currently eighth in the Premier League and nine points behind the top four.

However, Nunez has recently had difficulty getting into the game, having started just one of the Reds’ last four games as Klopp opted for a front three of Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota.

But the Reds boss, who will be without Roberto Firmino for the visit of Nottingham Forest on Saturday due to a muscle injury, insists the 23-year-old will get plenty of opportunities between now and the end of the season.

“Darwin is a player with a different skill set to our other players, which is good,” Klopp said during his pre-match press conference. “He’s a real handful, a machine.

“He will score a lot of goals, and he’s scored a decent number already. But of course, he’s still adapting. His English still isn’t great, but we’re working on that.

“It’s not helpful to go through a debut season when it’s difficult for the whole team. How can a striker shine when the whole team is struggling? It’s not impossible, but he’s had some super moments.

“He was injured in some moments, suspended in others. This is a long-term project.

“I understand that he wants to play desperately from the beginning, but we have to find a way that really works for us again and then fit in the players we can use with the specific strengths.

“I am completely fine with the situation and I understand that Darwin isn’t always fine. He doesn’t smile in my face when he realises he won’t start and say: ‘thank you, boss’.

“But when you have five or six players available up front, you have to make decisions. The door is miles open. He came on the other night and was exceptional. It was exactly the right way. With five games in the next two weeks, Darwin will start games, definitely.”

With Luis Diaz also returning to fitness in recent weeks, what must Nunez do to give himself the best opportunity to regain his place in the starting line-up?

“The ticket into this team must be and will be counter-pressing,” Klopp added. “We had so many games where I didn’t like that, and it’s a pretty strict thing.

“All five available now can do it pretty well. If you do it in a game you play, then you’ll have a good chance of starting again.

“We have opportunities to change and with five games in the next two weeks, there will be changes. Everyone will play, everyone is super important to us.

“But the ticket will be the desire to win the ball back after we’ve lost it, because we had so many times when that made the difference in games. It’s super important against deep-defending sides.”

Haaland’s tweet suggests he covertly watched Arsenal vs Southampton With Cheeky

Arsenal’s Premier League match against Southampton is believed to have been watched secretly by Erling Haaland, according to supporters.

The Gunners and the Saints had an entertaining game at the Emirates Stadium on Friday, April 21.

Mikel Arteta’s team was eager to get back to winning ways during the game after dropping points in two of their previous matches.

However, The Telegraph reports the league leaders faltered yet again as they settled for a 3-3 damaging draw in what was a huge blow to their title bid.

The hosts had to rely on two late goals from Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard to salvage the point after Carlos Alcaraz and Theo Walcott had put Southampton ahead.

    Haaland shares foretelling tweet

Haaland sparked reactions among fans with his foretelling tweet shortly after Arsenal’s epic draw against Southampton.

The Manchester City attacker posted a cheeky tweet with photos of him in training kits with the caption: “Mood Still.”

Haaland’s tweet sent fans into a meltdown, with many convinced the Norwegian hotshot had been watching the Emirates showdown.

    One replied:

    “What perfect tweet timing!”

    A second noted:

“Posting it after Arsenal bottling another game.”

    While another reckoned:

“You definitely watched the Arsenal game lol.”

Arsenal are scheduled to take on reigning champions Man City in their next Premier League outing.

Indonesia, Malaysia thrilled to finally celebrate Eid at large gatherings after lifted COVID curbs

Eid al-Fitr, the “festival of breaking the fast” that follows the holy month of Ramadan, is a time when Muslims congregate in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Relieved to be allowed to celebrate freely following the lifting of most COVID-19 restrictions that had stifled past festivities, Muslims in Indonesia and Malaysia have congregated in large numbers to usher in the Eid al-Fitr festival, which marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

To commemorate the conclusion of Ramadan, hundreds of worshippers gathered at the historic harbour of Sunda Kelapa in North Jakarta, the country with the largest proportion of Muslims in the world, for morning prayers on Saturday.

“I’m very happy that we’re free (of COVID curbs) now,” Laila, 35, who goes by one name like many Indonesians, told the Reuters news agency.

Another worshipper, 30-year-old Adit Chandra, said: “I hope it gets better from here on, and that we can gather together with our families after the last three years of not being able to go back to our hometown.”

Chandra is among the more than 120 million Indonesians – nearly half the country’s population – who plan to travel from major urban centres to their hometowns for Eid al-Fitr.

The figure represents about 44 percent more than the number of people who travelled during celebrations last year, the government said.

In neighbouring Malaysia, devotees also celebrated with families.

“We can visit the extended family, and do so without suspicious feelings … during the pandemic we were cautious,” said Khairul Soryati, a 39-year-old resident of the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Muhd Nur Afham, 31, who works in Singapore said he could finally celebrate with family in Malaysia this year after not being able to travel during the pandemic.

“I’m grateful … last time we only met through video call,” he said.

Authorities in both countries have, however, urged the public to remain cautious amid reports of rising COVID cases.

Sudan military tweets Eid truce agreement

A three-day ceasefire has been agreed to by the Sudanese military, according to a tweet from the military.

Many were unable to attend the Eid prayers earlier in the morning due to fighting that erupted in Khartoum’s capital earlier in the day.

“The armed forces hope that the rebels will abide by all the requirements of the truce and stop any military moves that would obstruct it,” the statement says.

Several previous agreements for 24-hour humanitarian ceasefires have been flouted this week.

Earlier on Friday the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said it had agreed to an Eid ceasefire.

Alleged transfer: PSG prepared to make €150m offer for Napoli star Osimhen

In the forthcoming transfer window, Paris Saint-Germain is reportedly ready to make a €150 million offer for star Napoli attacker Victor Osimhen.

The 24-year-old Osimhen is now in his third season with Napoli after moving there in a club-record €70 million deal from Lille, and this time around he has had one of the best goal-scoring campaigns in Europe.

The Nigerian international has been unstoppable with 21 goals in 24 Serie A appearances and five goals in six Champions League matches.

Now, the world’s best clubs have taken notice.

While there is also said to be strong interest in Osimhen coming from the deep pockets of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain are trying to wrap things up early with a serious bid.

Football Insider is reporting the French giants are ready to meet Napoli’s enormous €150m asking price, with the hope they can blow Chelsea out of the water as they consider a £100m (€112m) bid of their own.

Osimhen’s contract ties him to the club for two more seasons after this one, but with his value at an all-time high, and with Napoli being able to offer the chance at league titles and deep Champions League runs, the Serie A leaders can demand a substantial windfall.

    ROUND-UP

    – According to GiveMeSport, Manchester United view Valencia’s 22-year-old goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili – who is priced around £45m (€50m) – as a potential long-term replacement for David de Gea.

  • You sold yourself to the media and police not me – Oppong-Nkrumah to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng

You sold yourself to the media and police not me – Oppong-Nkrumah to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng

Former minister of environment, science, technology, and innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, accused the current minister of information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, of being behind a plot to bring him down in his battle against unlawful small-scale mining, also known as galamsey.

In a report on illicit small-scale mining (galamsey) in Ghana, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said that Oppong Nkrumah devised a scheme to sabotage him because of his struggle against the threat.

“…indeed, the facts are that it was Prof Boateng himself who wrote to the Ghana Police Service in January 2020 reporting the loss of some excavators and calling for an investigation. It was Prof Boateng himself who in subsequent media interviews mentioned that the number of excavators missing was about 500.

“Again, on or around February 20, 2020, it was Prof Boateng himself who at Parliament House (During interviews on the SONA) engaged in exchanges with the media about the said excavators and promised that they will be recovered.

“For the record, these are the matters that occasioned the media reports about Prof Boateng and the said excavators. Further, it was Prof Boateng himself who was later to be seen in a video making comments about the anti-galamsey fight and the release of excavators.”

He added “I Kojo Oppong Nkrumah was not responsible for his initial police report, his subsequent interviews, or any of the claims he made. To be clear, it was Prof Boateng’s own reports, interviews, and videos that generated his media challenges around the time. I am thus disappointed that he would, in this document, seek to blame me for the media reports,” the statement said.

What Prof Frimpong Boateng wrote about Oppong Nkrumah in his galamsey report:

A report by the Chairman of the dissolved Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cited Information Minister, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah as scheming to run him down.

The 37-page report filed by the former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology dated March 19, 2021, was to brief the president about the work of the Committee in its fight against illegal mining and the “way forward.”

One of the big names indicted in the report is the Minister for Information who according to Mr Frimpong Boateng gathered and incited a team of journalists to attack him.

“On Saturday the 8th of February 2020. Mr. Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, the Minister for Information assembled a group of journalists from both NDC and NPP-affiliated media houses at the Forest Hotel in Dodowa to discuss a strategy to bring me Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng down. Whilst they were there a journalist from among the group called a friend of mine, also a journalist, and informed him about the plot that was being hatched. He further informed my friend to watch out for headlines in some newspapers in the days following the meeting,” he stated in the report.

“On Monday, 10′ February 2020, the INFORMER Newspaper, whose Editor was at the meeting had the Banner Headline on its front page as reproduced below:
“As if that was not enough on Thursday, 13th February 2020 at the 71st Cabinet Meeting, Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah in his regular report to Cabinet talked about news that was trending in the week.

“The first thing he mentioned was Frimpong-Boateng and 500 missing excavators,” the former minister said.

As part of his report, Prof. Frimpong Boateng alleged that some members of the Committee including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah sabotaged his work.

“It must be noted that Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah, as Minister for Information, was a member of the IMCIM and he never called me to find out what I knew about ‘missing excavators’ but he found it worthwhile to magnify it in press and also present the falsehood before Cabinet for reasons best known to him and his co-conspirators. If Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah and the likes of him have presidential ambitions they should pursue it on merit and not attempt to destroy a hard working patriot, whose only ambition is work to achieve a Ghana Beyond Aid,” the report captured.

“After the 2020 general election, Oppong-Nkrumah on many occasions attributed the below expectation performance of the NPP to the Government’s management of the ‘banking crisis and the galamsey fight’. The fact is that those who did not vote for the NPP in the galamsey areas were not the miners but rather the hundreds of thousands of people living in the communities bordering the forests reserves, who were being harassed by mining companies such as Heritage Imperial,” he added.

Andrew Tate: Romanian judge extends influencer’s house arrest to another 30 days

A Romanian court has extended controversial influencer Andrew Tate’s house imprisonment for an additional 30 days.

In December 2022, he and his brother Tristan were first taken into custody at their house in Bucharest.

He was placed under house arrest on March 31 as a result of a Romanian judge’s decision.

The brothers and the two Romanian associates who were also taken into custody have not yet been charged.

However, prosecutors are investigating the brothers for crimes of suspected human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women.

    They have denied the allegations.

The two associates, Georgiana Naghel and Luana Radu, were also moved from prison detention into house arrest on 31 March.

All four were ordered to stay in the buildings where they live, unless they have judicial permission to leave.

It is unclear whether the other associates also had their house arrest extended on Friday.

The Tate brothers’ latest extension to their house arrest means they cannot leave their homes before 29 May.

Andrew Tate has millions of followers online. His content is particularly popular among young men drawn to his hyper-macho image.

  • I had no hand in Frimpong-Boateng’s ‘sabotage’ – Oppong-Nkrumah breaks silence

I had no hand in Frimpong-Boateng’s ‘sabotage’ – Oppong-Nkrumah breaks silence

Minister of information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has denied claims made in a 37-page report on illicit mining that he engineered a plot to assassinate Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the former minister for science, environment, technology, and innovation.

According to the report written by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah organised a meeting of NPP and NDC journalists in Dodowa on February 8, 2020, to discuss a plan to assassinate Prof. Boateng.

According to Frimpong-Boateng, the outcome of the meeting led to subsequent negative media reports about him.

But in a response, Mr Oppong Nkrumah described the claims as completely false.

According to him, he only attended a PRINPAG (Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana) event, jointly organised with the Bank of Ghana on financial reporting and never held any meeting to oust anybody from the government.

“Indeed, the facts are that it was Prof Frimpong-Boateng himself who wrote to the Ghana Police Service in January 2020 reporting the loss of some excavators and calling for an investigation.

It was Prof. Frimpong-Boateng himself who in subsequent media interviews mentioned that the number of excavators missing was about 500.

Again on or around February 20, 2020, it was Prof Frimpong-Boateng himself who at Parliament House (During interviews on the SONA) engaged in exchanges with the media about the said excavators and promised that they will be recovered”.

“For the record, these are the matters that occasioned the media reports about Prof Frimpong-Boateng and the said excavators. Further, it was Prof. Frimpong-Boateng himself who was later to be seen in a video making comments about the anti-galamsey fight and the release of excavators.

“I Kojo Oppong Nkrumah was not responsible for his initial police report, his subsequent interviews, or any of the claims he made.

To be clear, it was Prof Frimpong-Boateng’s own reports, interviews and videos that generated his media challenges around the time. I am thus disappointed that he would, in this document, seek to blame me for the media reports.”

“Over the years, I had nothing but great admiration for Prof Frimpong-Boateng’s public-spirited works and as an inspirational citizen.

I feel gravely offended over the false claims he has made and the hurtful conclusions he has sought to exact about me precisely because of the great esteem in which I have held him.

“I trust that in the coming months and years, he will reflect deeply upon his own actions and comments which have led to his challenges. He should kindly leave me out of his personal fights. I am utterly disappointed but I forgive him.”

Alec Baldwin: Manslaughter charges in connection with shooting dropped

Alec Baldwin no longer faces criminal charges in connection with a fatal on-set shooting in October 2021.

In connection with the event that occurred while Rust was being filmed in New Mexico, the Emmy Award-winning actor was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer, was murdered by a real bullet fired from a pretend gun that Baldwin was using.

The development comes less than two weeks before a trial was set to begin.

A statement released by New Mexico special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis said that “over the last few days… new facts were revealed” in the case, requiring further investigation.

“This decision does not absolve Mr Baldwin of criminal culpability and charges may be refiled,” the statement continued, adding: “Our follow-up investigation will remain active and ongoing.”

A lawyer for Mr Baldwin praised the move by prosecutors.

“We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident,” his lawyer, Luke Nikas, told the BBC in a statement.

Mr Baldwin had been practising firing the gun on set at a ranch near Santa Fe when it went off, fatally striking 42-year-old Ukrainian-born Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

The actor denied pulling the trigger, although an FBI report later concluded that the gun could not have been fired without the trigger being pulled.

He had been due in court for a preliminary hearing on 3 May.

The film’s armourer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, is also facing two counts of involuntary manslaughter. The statement from the special prosecutors says the charges against her remain unchanged.

A lawyer for Ms Gutierrez-Reed told BBC News that they “fully expect at the end of this process that Hannah will also be exonerated”.

    The rust set

According to the LA Times, prosecutors had recently learned that the gun used in the shooting, a .45 Colt revolver, had been modified with a new trigger in a way that could have made a misfire more likely.

Thursday’s statement by prosecutors made no mention of the gun, but said that the newly revealed facts “demand further investigation and forensic analysis”.

Prosecutors had accused Mr Baldwin, 65, of showing a “reckless” disregard for the safety of his colleagues.

Mr Nikas, a lawyer for the star of The Hunt for Red October, previously called the initial decision to charge his client “a terrible miscarriage of justice”.

“Mr Baldwin had no reason to believe there was a live bullet in the gun – or anywhere on the movie set,” Mr Nikas said.

“He relied on the professionals with whom he worked, who assured him the gun did not have live rounds.”

In an Instagram post after the announcement was made, the 30 Rock actor thanked his lawyer and his wife, Hilaria Baldwin.

“I owe everything I have to this woman. (and to you, Luke),” he posted.

    The post

In order to have been found guilty prosecutors would have had to convince a jury that he had acted with “criminal negligence”.

If convicted, he could have faced up to 18 months in prison.

The Santa Fe district attorney had initially added a firearm enhancement charge, which could have added five years to his sentence.

But it was dropped after prosecutors determined that the enhancement law was not in place at the time of the shooting.

The decision to drop the charges comes on the same day that Rust resumed filming – 18 months after the shooting.

Melina Spadone, a lawyer for Rust Movie Productions, said new rules on the set “will bar any use of working weapons and any form of ammunition”.

“Live ammunition is – and always was – prohibited on set.”

According to Variety magazine, Mr Baldwin is currently filming Rust on location in Montana.

Hutchins’ widower, Matthew, will be an executive producer. Baldwin last October reached a settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit brought by her family.

Rust Movie productions, which Baldwin is part of, said in February the scene that was being rehearsed when Hutchins was shot has now been rewritten.

Queen would have been 97: Previously unpublished picture of herself and grandchildren released

On what would have been her 97th birthday, a new photograph of the late Queen was made public.

The former monarch can be seen grinning with some of her grandkids and great-grandchildren in the never-before-seen photo, which was taken by the Princess of Wales.

Last summer at Balmoral in Aberdeenshire, the family posed for a photo as a unit.

In addition to Mia, Lucas, and Lena Tindall, Savannah, and Isla Phillips are present with the Queen, as well as Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Standing at the back are the Queen’s grandchildren Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex – the son and daughter of the now Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

Recognising the Queen’s birthday on Instagram earlier, Buckingham Palace wrote: “Today we remember the incredible life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on what would have been her 97th birthday.”

“When Her Majesty was born in April 1926, Princess Elizabeth and her family did not expect that she would one day become Queen. Following the abdication of her uncle King Edward VIII in 1936, her father acceded to the throne.

“When King George VI died in February 1952, Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II when she was just 25. Her Majesty went on to be Britain’s longest reigning Monarch – the only one in history to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.”

Balmoral was one of the Queen’s favourite places and she is said to never have been happier than when staying there.

After her marriage to Prince Philip in 1947, the couple spent their honeymoon at Birkhall – a hunting lodge on the Balmoral estate.

The Queen then usually stayed at the main property annually from August and September, and into October.

She travelled to the private residence on July 21 2022, and for the first time in her reign appointed a new prime minister there on Tuesday 6 September – two days before her death on 8 September.

UEFA: Mourinho, Zidane, Ancelotti, others join new board

The UEFA summit slated for Monday, to solicit expert input into crucial topics such as the VAR and handball will host a star-studded panel of Europe-based legends.
They will be urged to “protect the game of football”.

The 24-member UEFA football board now includes famous ex-players Paolo Maldini, Luis Figo, Gareth Bale, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Laudrup, Philipp Lahm, and Robbie Keane in addition to coaches Jose Mourinho, Fabio Capello, Zinedine Zidane, Carlo Ancelotti, and Fabio Capello.

There is one non-European on the board, with Inter’s Argentine vice-president Javier Zanetti joining a throng that also includes former Germany team-mates Rudi Voller and Jurgen Klinsmann, plus Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman, Rafael Benitez, Patrick Vieira and Eric Abidal.

The noticeably all-male board will hold its first meeting at UEFA’s European House of Football headquarters on Monday.

European football’s governing body said the group will “give an institutional yet independent voice of experience and expertise on fundamental football-related topics”.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said: “UEFA is delighted to see that the very ones who have shaped the game’s history with their talents and philosophy through decades are gathered again around our common goal – to protect the game of football and its essential values. As we always say: football first!”

Ceferin is campaigning for clarity on football’s handball rules, having recently described the law as “really obscure”.

“No one understands it any more,” Ceferin said. “So we really need a conversation here, finding solutions and clarifying some issues.”

He said that would be an issue for the football board to look at, and it was confirmed on Thursday as being on the agenda for the meeting, along with discussions about the video assistant referee system, player behaviour and medical issues.

UEFA said its technical director and chief of football Zvonimir Boban would chair Monday’s meeting, although he is not a member of the new board.

UEFA football board members: Jose Mourinho (Portugal), Carlo Ancelotti (Italy), Zinedine Zidane (France), Paolo Maldini (Italy), Fabio Capello (Italy), Javier Zanetti (Argentina), Luis Figo (Portugal), Philipp Lahm (Germany), Ronald Koeman (Netherlands), Gareth Southgate (England), Rio Ferdinand (England), Michael Laudrup (Denmark), Rafael Benitez (Spain), Roberto Martinez (Spain)
Predrag Mijatovic (Montenegro), Jurgen Klinsmann (Germany), Rudi Voller (Germany), Petr Cech (Czech Republic), Juan Mata (Spain), Robbie Keane (Republic of Ireland), Patrick Vieira (France), Henrik Larsson (Sweden), Eric Abidal (France), Gareth Bale (Wales).

  • Xavi’s refined Barca for next season includes Messi, two others

Xavi’s refined Barca for next season includes Messi, two others

By adding at least three new players this summer, Barcelona boss Xavi reportedly plans to change his starting lineup for the next season.

The Spanish coach wants to bolster his team with some top-tier players for the upcoming season. Nevertheless, he is on a tight budget and needs to earn money by selling a few players.

With this in mind, Xavi has resorted to signing three free agents, Lionel Messi, central defender Inigo Martinez and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. All three players will come as free transfers as they will be out of contract at their respective clubs by the end of June.

According to a report by the Mirror, the signings would see Xavi move to a narrow formation or use Pedri and Gavi as wide midfielders.

However, as per the report, the move will come at the cost of French winger Ousmane Dembele, who will have to drop out of the starting XI despite being in solid form this season.

Lionel Messi’s move back to the Catalan club is still not sure, given the wages he will command. But the club and La Liga are working towards an arrangement that will make it financially possible for the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner to join the club.

Meanwhile, Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has not decided where he wants to play next season, although he is open to moving to Spain. But Barcelona and Inigo Martinez have reached an agreement that will see the Spanish defender join in the summer.

Xavi’s dream staring XI at Barca next season:

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen; Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo, Inigo Martinez, Alejandro Balde; Ilkay Gundogan, Frenkie De Jong, Pedri; Gavi, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski.

  • 3 basic reasons why struggling Barcelona needs their Messi back this summer – Reports

3 basic reasons why struggling Barcelona needs their Messi back this summer – Reports

To bolster essential elements of their future plans, Barcelona needs former star Lionel Messi to sign a contract this summer.

Lionel Messi will make a triumphant homecoming to Spain after spending two uncertain years at PSG, when he won the Ballon d’Or once and Ligue 1 hopefully twice.

While Messi joining the Catalans may not be the most lucrative move for the PSG forward, it might be a game-changer for them as they greatly increase their chances of securing unmatched sponsorship deals and strengthen their attacking strategy.

Players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland are a massive draw to attract sponsorship deals. Yes, Lewandowski could be included in that list, but Barcelona’s current financial state needs someone of Messi’s stature.

If the Argentine signs the deal this summer, Barcelona would be guaranteed larger-than-life sponsorship deals.

Another area Lionel Messi can help with is Barca’s front half on the pitch. While Barcelona has been a force of nature this season when it comes to defending, according to their manager they still lack scoring goals and require someone to gel the front three perfectly.

We definitely know who he’s referring to.

Due to conflicts with Laliga’s financial fair play rules, Joan Laporta had to release Messi from Barca despite telling everyone that he’ll renew the Argentiine’s contract. This infamous time in Barcelona’s history led fans to turn against the higher management.

Laporta bringing back Lionel Messi would definitely improve that relationship.

Barca supporters understand that this is going to be decade-defining summer. Either they can win the race in signing Lionel Messi or let him go to Saudi Arabia or Inter Miami in the USA.

  • My attachment is not to material things – Hakimi’s ex-wife

My attachment is not to material things – Hakimi’s ex-wife

After finding out about the Paris Saint-Germain defender’s hidden fortune, Achraf Hakimi’s ex-wife Hiba Abouk has spoken up.

Hakimi and Abouk are in court to formally begin the divorce process they started against the full-back as models and actors.

As part of the terms of the divorce, Abouk demanded access to half of Hakimi’s assets. But, he was astonished to learn that none of Hakimi’s assets were registered in his name, and that his net worth was incredibly low.

Instead, all the Morocco international’s assets were registered in his mother’s name, meaning she didn’t have to pay his ex-wife anything.

Since the news broke, Abouk has remained tight-lipped. But she has now broken her silence with a defiant message in which she insisted she was unfazed by the prospect of getting nothing from Hakimi.

The Spanish actress wrote via Sportskeeda:

“There are days when I’m fine and others when you must know how to take blows and make decisions that are sometimes complicated.

That can throw you off a bit. When you separate, you restructure your life, although it is not anything special, and you have to take the iron out of the matter.”

    She added:

“In life, there are many good moments and also other bad ones. You marry for love, and you divorce for lack of love.

People evolve, change, grow and take a path sometimes, and there may also be a point where you stop finding yourself. “

    Abouk continued:

“I have zero attachment to material things. I left home with one hand in front and the other behind, without the support of my family.

But I had to do it because my environment was not going to allow me to grow or be free. It was either my life or theirs, and I decided to fight for myself.”

Hakimi and Abouk started dating in early 2018 when the PSG  defender used to play for Real Madrid.

    GFA gifts Sellas Tetteh GHC50k

Sellas Tetteh, the former coach of the Black Satellites, received a donation of GHC50,000 from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Foundation. Tetteh led the nation’s under-20 squad to the 2009 World Cup victory.

The first gift was given to Tetteh, who had recently struggled with illnesses, as part of the association’s initiative to aid struggling individuals through the recently founded GFA Foundation.

The GFA president Kurt Okraku who appreciated the efforts of the coach used the opportunity to clarify recent media reports that the GFA, or Ministry of Youth and Sports, owes the coach incentives and salaries.

Meanwhile, Sellas Tetteh had earlier received a donation of a similar amount from the Ministry of Youth and Sports in February after persistent calls in the media to support the veteran coach who was battling with health conditions.

He had also been visited with a donation of an undisclosed cash amount by Andre Ayew, the captain of the Black Satellites team which was coached by Sellas Tetteh to World Cup glory in 2009.

The former Rwanda national team head coach has previously worked with the Black Starlets and Sierra Leone.

He also led the Black Satellites to third place in Turkey at the 2013 U-20 World Cup.

  • Juve’s Allegri says he ‘had that feeling’ Sevilla will hammer Utd

Juve’s Allegri says he ‘had that feeling’ Sevilla will hammer Utd

Juventus reached the Europa League quarterfinals with a 1-1 draw at Sporting CP, but Massimiliano Allegri urged the Bianconeri to show more aggression.

Federico Gatti’s goal handed Juventus a victory in the rematch last week at the Allianz Stadium, giving them a slim 1-0 lead going into the second leg at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

An early Adrien Rabiot goal doubled Juve’s lead in the match, and even though Marcus Edwards pulled one back for Sporting, the visitors held on to advance to a semifinal matchup with Sevilla after learning prior to Thursday’s game that their 15-point deduction in Serie A for financial breaches had been suspended.

Despite earning a last-four spot in Europe for the first time since 2017, Allegri warned his players they must be more clinical in future after spurning a number of chances to kill the tie off in the second half.

“It was a good day, as we headed to the semi-finals,” the Juve coach told Sky Sport Italia. “We suffered, we did good things in the second half at the beginning.

“But we have to do better when it comes to our chances. We rushed the play in the box and more patience would have been needed. We shot little from outside the box and we must improve.

“We knew it would be difficult, but we are bringing home a good result.”

Standing between Allegri’s men and the final in Budapest on May 31 is Sevilla, whose six Europa League six titles are double any other team’s trophy haul in the competition.

Sevilla beat Manchester United 5-2 on aggregate to seal their semi-final place but Allegri says he had predicted such a result.

“I expected Sevilla to be honest,” he said of his next European opponents. “They are a tricky team, they play well and are good with the ball.

“They have won so many Europa Leagues, so they definitely have an advantage. The signs from the last game [in Manchester] were in their favour, I had that feeling.”

Rabiot’s close-range strike after nine minutes in Portugal gave Juve a crucial two-goal lead and capped a strong performance in midfield, one that saw him lead the Bianconeri in passes in the final third (15) and contribute defensively with three clearances and an interception.

Despite his impressive display, Allegri still believes Rabiot has parts of his game to work on, saying: “He has the qualities but he can still improve.

“Sometimes he gets close to the area and doesn’t shoot. He has to improve but he has become important, extraordinary.”

  • Joao Felix: ‘He will be well received’ at Atletico – Club president

Joao Felix: ‘He will be well received’ at Atletico – Club president

If Chelsea chooses not to pursue a long-term transfer for the forward, Enrique Cerezo, club president, says Atletico Madrid will be happy to have Joao Felix return.

Mid-season transfer action at Stamford Bridge included the loan signing of Joao Felix to Chelsea in January.

The Portuguese international, though, has only scored twice in 11 Premier League games to this far, and Frank Lampard has decided to keep him on the bench for Chelsea’s last two contests.

While Joao Felix endured a strained relationship with Atletico boss Diego Simeone before departing on loan, Los Colchoneros will find a place for him if he returns to the club next season.

Asked about the forward’s future, Cerezo told Cadena SER: “You can’t anticipate things, everything is yet to be seen. Chelsea are a big team that can count on him.

“If he comes back, he will be well received, if he returns. Nothing can ever be ruled out in football, you can’t take anything for granted.”

Atletico are two points behind second-placed Real Madrid in LaLiga after winning six successive league games, but Cerezo does not believe their improved form can be attributed to Joao Felix’s exit.

“The circumstances of each team are different,” he said. “Joao was under a lot of pressure, he’s a star, but here he hasn’t had the luck to show it.

“He’s going to be a great player, and not in the very distant future.”

  • Caicedo optimistic about upcoming transfer prospects following his unsuccessful move to Arsenal

Caicedo optimistic about upcoming transfer prospects following his unsuccessful move to Arsenal

Moises Caicedo of Brighton and Hove Albion is optimistic that he will have more opportunities to sign with a Premier League elite team, although admitting that his failed January transfer to Arsenal was “tough.”

In the most recent transfer window, Brighton reportedly turned down offers from Arsenal that may have reached £70 million, despite the 21-year-old player publicly declaring his desire to sign with the league leaders.

However, Caicedo ultimately decided to stay, and in March he even reached an agreement on a new, long-term contract with the Seagulls.

Arsenal were initially expected to make another approach for Caicedo at the end of the season, while Liverpool have also been linked with a move as they look to rebuild their midfield.

While Caicedo struggled amid Arsenal’s overtures, he does not believe he has missed his chance to play at the top level.

“I’m sure I’m going to have many more opportunities,” Caicedo told The Telegraph. “That’s why I continue to do things well.

“I’d seen a lot of Arsenal before knowing that there was a possibility of me signing for them. I watched them and I liked them because they have very young, talented players and some stars, but they always have that mindset of wanting more.

“It was tough. When I didn’t end up going, lots of people would make fun of me on Instagram. I didn’t check my social media because it would hurt me to see things.”

Roberto De Zerbi has led Brighton to seventh in the Premier League table and into an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United, and Caicedo says the Italian’s intervention was key to him staying at The Amex Stadium.

“He approached me, we spoke and he told me to be calm, that it wouldn’t be the last club that would come in for me, I’d have more opportunities,” Caicedo recalled.

“He told me to keep on doing what I was doing and that I’ll see in the future I wouldn’t be sorry about staying.

“I just want to have a really good season with Brighton now, and then we’ll see what happens next season.”

Moyes and Rice take pleasure in rewarding West Ham supporters

West Ham reached the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League on Thursday, and David Moyes and Declan Rice delighted in giving back to the team’s supporters after a trying season.

With a 4-1 home win and a 5-2 overall victory over Gent, thanks to goals from Lucas Paqueta, Rice, and a brace from Michail Antonio, West Ham advanced.

After reaching the Europa League final four the previous season, Moyes’ team advanced to its second continental semi-final in as many years as a result.

With West Ham battling relegation in the Premier League, sitting just four points above the bottom three, Moyes hailed the Hammers’ achievements in balancing European football and domestic challenges.

He told BT Sport: “It is a brilliant achievement. To do it two years in a row is special, it really is. It doesn’t happen very often so we’ll look forward to the semi-finals.

“It’s been tough for the fans [this year]. We’ve had so many positive things coming from European football that it has built a great relationship with the players.

“It was really important we got to the semi-finals. Gent caused us problems and we had to work hard for the win.”

Rice’s 58th-minute strike put the Hammers in full control of the tie after Paqueta and Antonio’s first goal had put West Ham into the lead following Hugo Cuypers’ first-half opener.

The West Ham captain echoed his manager’s sentiment, relishing the impact the result could have on the fans after a difficult season.

Rice told BT Sport: “I can’t put it into words. Another semi-final back-to-back. The place was rocking and you felt it. To score and the lads play really well, ah, it was a top night for the club.

“In the last couple of games we’ve not got off to the best start, waiting for teams to score to react. But when we got that goal we felt the buzz and the energy. In the second half it could have been six or seven.”

As for his goal, driving over the halfway line before drilling into the bottom-left corner, Rice sees it as one of his best finishes for the club.

“When I pick the ball up in those positions and have space to drive into I feel good,” the England midfielder added. “That’s when I feel I’m at my best. It doesn’t happen all the time.

“It definitely goes down as one of my best goals for West Ham. I didn’t even know how to celebrate. I was just so happy to score, let alone it be like that, so it was special.”

“There’s obviously not been a lot for west ham fans to cheer for this season but they will be happy tonight and to put a smile on their faces is unbelievable.”

West Ham will face AZ Alkmaar in the semi-finals after the Eredivisie side won on penalties against Anderlecht, who squandered a 2-0 lead from the first leg.

“AZ Alkmaar have had good momentum all year and have a good young team with lots of new talent,” Moyes added.

“It will be a really hard game. For them to come from 2-0 down and get through is a great achievement.”

Erik ten Hag could not hide dismay after Maguire’s carelessness causing Sevilla’s first goal

On April 20, Erik ten Hag was utterly perplexed after Harry Maguire’s blunder allowed Sevilla to score.

The Spanish team scored the opening goal to take the tie into their own hands, and Manchester United’s manager struggled to conceal his dismay.

Just seven minutes into the game, Maguire mishandled what appeared to be a straightforward pass from David De Gea, allowing the former Tottenham player Erik Lamela to pick up the ball and set Youssef En-Nesyri up for the game’s first goal.

Sevilla all but took the tie away from United early in the second half as Loic Bade made it 2-0, as per The Mirror.

The Red Devils ended up crashing out of the competition 5-2 on aggregate, with their only chance of a second piece of silverware being the FA Cup, as reported on BBC.

    Maguire, De Gea mess up

After the game, many fans were critical of two players: David De Gea and Harry Maguire.

Some argued the pass from the keeper in the build-up to the first goal was once the defender should have never received, but others believe Maguire should have done much better.

For the first goal, Sevilla players wheeled away in celebration and cameras panned to Erik ten Hag, who tried his best to hide his bewilderment.

However, one could clearly see the disappointment on his face at Maguire’s costly mistake.

Legends of the game, such as Paul Scholes, did not hold back in criticising United, who were branded ‘terrible’ over the entire 90 minutes.

It remains to be seen whether Maguire will still be selected to start in the next game, which is the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The embattled defender has had to be brought in to replace Lisandro Martinez, who recently suffered a broken metatarsal that will likely keep him out for the remainder of the season.

  • Mourinho commends Dybala after Feyenoord strike

Mourinho commends Dybala after Feyenoord strike

Jose Mourinho praised Paulo Dybala following Roma’s thrilling extra-time triumph over Feyenoord in the Europa League quarterfinals thanks to his late equaliser.

The Giallorossi overcame Feyenoord 4-2 on aggregate at Stadio Olimpico, securing a meeting with Bayer Leverkusen in the semifinals.

Roma was on the verge of elimination after Igor Paixao’s header negated Leonardo Spinazzola’s earlier goal as they trailed 1-0 from the first leg.

But Dybala, who was introduced as a substitute after missing Sunday’s victory over Udinese through injury, levelled the tie with a sharp turn and finish forcing extra time, in which further strikes from Stephan El Shaarawy and Lorenzo Pellegrini sealed the deal.

It was the former Juventus forward’s 16th goal of the season and fourth in the Europa League – a tally only bettered by Marcus Rashford, Victor Boniface (both six) and Santiago Gimenez (five) – and his exploits drew praise from his head coach.

“My feeling is that he was seeking the joy, he had lost more than confidence,” Mourinho told Sky Sport Italia.

“He found it here. He has found a coach who understands him, a crowd that loves him and a space on the field in which to be a leader with his quality and personality.

“Dybala is a nice boy. He has the quality to play for the biggest clubs in the world, but he has found joy here.

“I gave him absolute freedom to come on tonight, and he could come off even two minutes later if he didn’t feel up to it.

But he played 30 minutes of extra time and 25 minutes regular, and he finished on a high.”

Meanwhile, Dybala also paid tribute to Mourinho who, having guided Roma to the Europa Conference League title last season, is closing in on a sixth triumph in European competition.

“I think everyone knows Mourinho, his history, what he’s done in Europe and at every club he worked at, I think he won something,” the forward added.

“His mentality fuels you. He knew the game could end up like this and pushed us to give something more.

He changed the tactical system, we started playing better and dominated extra time for a deserved victory.

“I think we all want to win, which is the most important thing. We have a coach with an incredible mentality. He told us the game would be like that, and he was absolutely right.

“This squad won the Europa Conference League last season, so they know what it takes to win. Now, we hope to go all the way in the Europa League too.”

Al-Hilal-Al Nassr: Crotch-grabbing Ronaldo goes unpunished

Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be penalised for the vulgar, crotch-grabbing action he made during his final match for Al-Nassr, which caused so much uproar.

Against Al-Hilal on Tuesday, the Portuguese superstar had a disastrous performance that brought further scrutiny to his antics.

After delivering a tackle akin to those seen in Wrestling on a rival, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was fortunate to only receive a yellow card. Following this, Messi insults from the crowd continued.

Ronaldo appeared to react to those by grabbing his crotch in the direction of his tormentors, leading to widespread condemnation throughout the Middle East and calls for him to be expelled from the Saudi Pro League.

The Disciplinary and Ethics Committee of the Saudi Football Association has looked into the incident and delivered its verdict, with it determined that no further action is required.

The only penalty handed out by the committee is a 15,000 riyals fine, which his non-appealable, to Al-Nassr due to the late arrival of their players on the pitch for the start of the second-half.

Ronaldo escaped punishment as only official match football was reviewed – rather than the videos which have been posted on social media.

Al-Nassr were always confident that their iconic forward, who is the highest-paid player on the planet, would avoid any action as they claim that the 38-year-old was merely reacting to an injury he suffered in the groin region. They said: “Ronaldo suffers from an injury.

His challenge with Gustavo Cuellar, the Al-Hilal player, started with a blow in a very sensitive area.

This is confirmed information. As for the fans’ explanations, they are free to think whatever they want.”

Russian warplane bombs own city accidentally, leaves city centre damaged

The city of Belgorod, which is close to the Ukrainian border, was unintentionally attacked, according to the Moscow defence ministry.

The explosion produced a massive hole in the middle of the city that was roughly 20 metres (60 feet) broad, according to regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.

According to him, numerous buildings were damaged, and two people suffered injuries.

According to the ministry, a Su-34 fighter-bomber jet unintentionally released aviation ordnance.

Belgorod – a city of 370,000 – is around 25 miles (40 km) from the Ukrainian border. It lies just north of Ukraine’s second city, Kharkiv, and people there have been living in fear of Ukrainian shelling since the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year.

Russian jets also regularly fly over the city on their way to Ukraine.

  • Julian Nagelsmann: Chelsea’s next coach? Girlfriend hints

Julian Nagelsmann: Chelsea’s next coach? Girlfriend hints

If the most recent hint from Julian Nagelsmann’s spouse is any clue, the search for Chelsea’s next head coach may be ended.

Once Graham Potter was fired two weeks ago, Nagelsmann has been widely considered the favourite to become Chelsea’s new manager.

The club’s board hired Frank Lampard as a temporary replacement while conducting a thorough search for a long-term replacement. According to numerous publications, Nagelsmann and former Spain manager Luis Enrique made a good impression during the initial stages of negotiations.

However, as the Telegraph’s Matt Law reported, Enrique will no longer be a candidate for the West London job, with transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano adding that former Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino was a late entrant in the race.

    Naglesmann’s girlfriend

But as the Sun reports, speculation is growing that Chelsea’s co-directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart will settle on Nagelsmann as the new boss. The former Bayern Munich boss’s girlfriend, Lena Wurzenberger, is yet to start in her new role.

Wurzenberger was supposed to start working for BMW on April 1st, but she is yet to report to work giving fodder to the rumours that she is keen on moving to London should her boyfriend get the Stamford Bridge job.

She is said to have gotten the job while Nagelsmann was still at Bayern, but he was sacked a few days later.

The 35-year-old will have a lot on his plate should he get the job in the summer. Chelsea are poised to finish outside European places after a catastrophic season that saw the arrival of many new players with nothing to show for.

What Chelsea needs to do in the summer

Sports Brief had earlier reported that A brace from Rodrygo Goes on April 18 all but confirmed Chelsea’s exit from the UEFA Champions League. They might have put in a better performance than last weeks, but there was nothing they could do as Real Madrid marched to an eleventh semi-final in 13 years.

The Blues are now set to sit out of European football until at least 2025. Perhaps it is what the club needs. After a period of turmoil occasioned by a change in owners and the subsequent hiring and firing of managers, Chelsea will need time to set their house in order.

First, they should not gamble with whoever they choose as the new manager on a long-term basis.

  • Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah masterminded my dismissal – Prof Frimpong Boateng reveals

Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah masterminded my dismissal – Prof Frimpong Boateng reveals

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng has accused the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, of plotting to run him down in his report to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo.

The purpose of the 37-page report, dated March 19, 2021, submitted by the former minister of environment, science, and technology was to inform the president about the Committee’s efforts to combat illicit mining and the “path forward.”

As sighted by GhanaWeb, the former minister in his report made several allegations against some government and political party officials who made various attempts to thwart his efforts in clamping down on illegal mining.

Subsequent to the said meeting, the report to the president captured that various stories were published in the media against his person and that beyond that, the minister for information sought to run him down during cabinet meetings.

Following his removal from office by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2020, Prof. Frimpong Boateng disclosed that his exit from the Science and Technology Ministry was a grand scheme orchestrated by some elements in the government and the New Patriotic Party.

According to him there were people in government that wanted him out because of his stance on illegal mining activities in the country.

Camp Nou renovation sends Barça off till next two seasons

Barcelona has announced in a statement that they want to move on with their plans to play their 2023–24 season outside of Camp Nou, their customary home ground.

As Camp Nou, which can accommodate over 90,000 fans, is undergoing renovations, the Catalan giants will play their next two seasons at the Estadi Lluis Companys.

The first stage of construction for the club’s move to the Estadi Lluis Company for the coming season has reportedly been finished, the Barcelona club stated on Wednesday, April 19, according to Football Espana.

The La Liga leaders also revealed the grass has been replaced there and a new drainage system is being installed. Several facilities are also in line for improvement in the coming months.

Camp Nou which has been Barcelona’s home ground since 1957 is the stadium with the largest capacity in Spain and Europe, and the second largest in association football with a total capacity of 99,354.

Barcelona find another formula to make money

Meanwhile, Barcelona has been working for months on the sale of 24 percent of Barca Studios as they need to urgently raise €200million for their preparation of the 2023/24 season, Marca reports.

Last season the Catalan club activated a fourth lever when it raised a total of €100million after the sale of 25 percent to Orpheus Media, the company owned by Jaume Roures.

Barcelona are trying to make Lionel Messi’s return a reality but will need to present a viable financial plan to La Liga before the move can be sanctioned by the Spanish football body.

Barcelona confident of signing Lionel Messi

Earlier, it was reported that Barcelona are not just itching to sign Lionel Messi to improve their results on the pitch, but also intends to use his return to Camp Nou to boost the economic growth of the club.

The Catalan giants have been in a financial mess for a few years and had to activate up to six financial levers at the start of the season, to be able to fund the transfer of players.

Barcelona believes if they can just get Messi over the line and registered, the club would be able to increase their income by around 25 percent.

Erling Haaland: City’s ‘goal machine’ misses penalty, but vindicates himself with a goal

Erling Haaland missed his first penalty in a Manchester City shirt during Bayern Munich’s clash.

Since moving from the Bundesliga to the Premier League, the Norwegian has been a threat for the Cityzens, scoring an incredible 48 goals in 41 appearances.

He reenacted Lionel Messi’s move against Jerome Boateng on Wednesday, seating Dayot Upamecano before scoring against Bayern Munich, according to Sportstar.

He then scored his 12th Champions League goal.

His goal will be neutralized by a spot kick from Joshua Kimmich, but it proved to be a case of much ado about nothing as City ran out 4-1 winners across two legs, advancing to the Champions League semifinal.

But before his sublime skill and then a goal in the 57th minute, Haaland failed to put away a penalty, Fan Nation reports.

The 22-year-old has been flawless from 12 yards for Man City but proved he is human after all, ballooning his effort – which was his first penalty miss in eight attempts.

Since moving to the Etihad, he has found the net seven times from the penalty spot.

    Haaland sits Upamecano down

Erling Haaland picked Dayot Upamecano apart before notching his 12th Champions League goal as Manchester City advanced to the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, Sports Brief reported.

The Norwegian’s goal helped City reach the last four with an aggregate scoreline of 4-1, booking a tantalizing date with record holders Real Madrid, who bundled Chelsea out of the competition the previous day.

  • Ukraine space agency clears air on highly luminous light in Kyiv skies

Ukraine space agency clears air on highly luminous light in Kyiv skies

There was a great deal of speculation following a mystery flare that illuminated the skies over the capital of Ukraine on Wednesday night.

Although the US space agency notified the BBC that the satellite was still in orbit, Kyiv officials initially believed it was a Nasa spacecraft that was plummeting to Earth.

The flash was likely caused by a meteor entering the atmosphere, Ukrainian space officials later stated.

The air force was confident it was not a Russian air attack – an event all too familiar since the invasion last year.

The bright glow was observed in the sky over the capital around 22:00 local time (19:00 GMT).

An air raid alert was activated but “air defence was not in operation”, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, Serhiy Popko, said on Telegram.

Mr Popko suggested it was caused by a Nasa space satellite falling to Earth, referring to a retired 300kg (660lb) spacecraft that the space agency announced was set to re-enter the atmosphere on Wednesday.

The RHESSI satellite, used to observe solar flares, was launched into low Earth orbit in 2002 and decommissioned in 2018, Nasa said.

But Rob Margetta from Nasa’s office of communications told the BBC that the satellite was still in orbit at the time the flash was observed, and was due to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere during the night.

Satellite-tracking website Satflare indicated that RHESSI was nowhere near Ukraine at the time.

Ukrainian social media has been awash with theories and memes about what the flash could have been, with a popular theme being that it was caused by aliens.

But air force spokesman Yuri Ihnat told Ukrainian TV that the flash had also been seen over neighbouring Belarus to the north and Ukraine’s space agency said it was probably related to a cosmic body entering the dense layers of the atmosphere.

Kyiv officials said it was up to experts to establish what it was but what was most important was the city’s security.

  • Cricket: Mickey Arthur agrees to lead Pakistan at World Cup

Cricket: Mickey Arthur agrees to lead Pakistan at World Cup

Pakistan will be under the leadership of Derbyshire head of cricket Mickey Arthur at the ICC Men’s World Cup this year.

After extending his contract with Derbyshire through 2025, Arthur, 54, declined the possibility of a second stint as Pakistan coach in January.

The South African, who began working as a consultant for Pakistan earlier this month, has now also consented to serve as their team director in addition to his Derbyshire position.

“I need that adrenaline rush,” Arthur told BBC Radio Derby.

“I’ve found the long winters hard here because I wake up for matchday.”

Arthur, who was in charge of Pakistan from 2016 to 2019 when they became the top-ranked Test side, will also lead Pakistan during a three-Test tour of Australia this winter before returning to Derby.

“The lure of them wanting me to help them was too good to turn down,” he added.

“I wouldn’t have done it if I couldn’t have given Derbyshire 100% commitment, which Pakistan have agreed to.

“It doesn’t affect my role at Derbyshire at all and wouldn’t affect any performance.

“If I didn’t feel I could give Pakistan the same level of commitment I certainly wouldn’t have taken it. I’ve looked at schedules and it’s very doable.”

Arthur has met up with the players in Pakistan during New Zealand’s ongoing white-ball tour of the country, before he returns for Derbyshire’s next County Championship Division Two game against Durham on 27 April.

He said he is already “heavily involved” in Pakistan’s selection, as well as having put together their support staff.

Former Pakistan head coach Saqlain Mushtaq left the role earlier this year after his contract expired and is now New Zealand assistant coach.

Pakistan were beaten by England in the final of the Men’s T20 World Cup in November and then had a poor season at home where they won only one match.

They were swept 3-0 by England in their Test series, drew both Tests with New Zealand and then lost the one-day international series 2-1 to the Black Caps.

Arthur, who has also coached South Africa, Australia and Sri Lanka, did not have his Pakistan contract renewed in 2019 after the side failed to reach the World Cup semi-finals.

Derbyshire chief executive Ryan Duckett said the county would remain Arthur’s “main focus”.

He added: “A coach of Mickey’s calibre will naturally attract attention; however I am delighted by his continued dedication to his role, the group of players and club as a whole.”

Arthur said Derbyshire is “a really special project” that he sees as a “long-term commitment” and that he has not yet “even scratched the surface” of where he wants to take the club.

  • SpaceX’s Starship takes off

    SpaceX’s Starship takes off

With a thunderous boom, the 33 engines of the Super Heavy booster of the most powerful rocket ever created lifted off from the launch pad.

“Starship has cleared the pad and beach! Vehicle is on a nominal flight path,” SpaceX tweets.

We should have had a separation by now, SpaceX engineers say.

The Starship test flight is now over, after experiencing what engineers have called a “rapid unscheduled disassembly” during ascent.

“To make it this far is amazing,” engineers say, after the rocket cleared its tower and successfully lifted off.

“You never know what’s going to happen,” they say, adding that “Starship gave us an exciting end to an incredible test”.

“As if the flight test was not exciting enough, Starship experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly before stage separation,” the company tweeted.

What a launch – seeing Starship head skywards, its 33 engines burning as it slowly pushed upwards into the blue Texan sky, was quite something. It passed a key point – clearing the tower and not blowing up the launch pad infrastructure.

    So far so good.

But it was at the point where the booster tried to separate from the upper stage that things went wrong. The booster started tumbling, then boom – it was gone.

SpaceX call this a rapid unscheduled disassembly. But even though the company wanted this test to go further, they won’t call this a failure.

There were still cheers at SpaceX HQ even when the rocket went up in smoke. The fact that the rocket got off the ground is a start – they’ll assess what went right and what went wrong – and then have another go.

  • SpaceX Starship to try again in launch of history’s most powerful rocket ever developed

SpaceX Starship to try again in launch of history’s most powerful rocket ever developed

The ultimate objective is to have both half of the vehicle conduct controlled landings so they may be refuelled and utilised repeatedly, even if both segments would end the day on the ocean floor.

Nobody knows how long it will take to develop this skill. Nonetheless, a successful effort would be transformative.

A bright future should be possible given the potential payload performance to orbit of more than 100 tonnes per trip and the low cost of operation, which is primarily only the cost of fuel.

“We’ve got an arduous two or three years ahead of us with, probably, you know, many bumps on the road, but at the end of that, we should have something that enables a base on the Moon and a base on Mars,” Mr Musk said this week.

Mr Musk has tried to set expectations low for the test flight, which will begin at Boca Chica, on the the US-Mexico border.

Just getting the vehicle off the ground and not destroying the launch pad infrastructure would be considered “a win”, he said.

SpaceX will again open a live stream on its website about 45 minutes before lift-off.

The top segment of Starship, also known as the ship, has taken flight previously on short hops, but this will be the first time it will launch with its lower-stage.

This immense booster, called simply Super Heavy, was fired while clamped to its launch mount in February. However, its cluster of engines on that occasion were throttled back to half their capability.

    Starbase
Image caption,Mr Musk’s fear is that a launch pad explosion would destroy valuable infrastructure

If, as promised, SpaceX goes for 90% thrust on Thursday, the stage should deliver something close to 70 meganewtons. This is equivalent to the force needed to propel almost 100 Concorde supersonic airliners at takeoff.

It’s also double the thrust achieved by the Saturn V rocket that famously sent men to the Moon in the 1960s and 70s.

The mission would see the integrated Starship rocket fly out over the Gulf of Mexico.

The aim is to despatch the ship on a near-orbital trajectory that concludes with it splashing down in the Pacific, a couple of hundred km north of Hawaii.

Super Heavy, which powers the first two minutes and 50 seconds of flight, will try to return close to the Texas coast once its lifting job is done.

It will be commanded to make a vertical hover just above the Gulf’s waters, before being allowed to topple over and sink.

Although both segments will end the day on the seafloor, the ultimate goal is to have both halves of the vehicle perform controlled landings so they can be refuelled and reused, repeatedly.

How long it will take to achieve this capability is anyone’s guess. But if the project is successful, it would be transformative.

The prospective payload performance to orbit of more than 100 tonnes a flight, allied to the low cost of operation – principally, just the cost of fuel – should open the door to an exciting future.

“We’ve got an arduous two or three years ahead of us with, probably, you know, many bumps on the road, but at the end of that, we should have something that enables a base on the Moon and a base on Mars,” Mr Musk said this week.

  • Russia vodka cleared, Ukrainian vodka producers cheer to hike in worldwide sales

Russia vodka cleared, Ukrainian vodka producers cheer to hike in worldwide sales

Once Russia invaded Ukraine last year, its vodkas were promptly taken off the stores all across the world.

Other Ukrainian brands have the opportunity to take their place as a result.
According to Yuriy Sorochynskiy, he and his partner are “filled with immense satisfaction” that their Ukrainian vodka Nemiroff is still doing well on the international market.

“We are thrilled and excited to see our brand being recognised globally,” adds the company’s chief executive.

“And we are grateful to our customers abroad who are choosing Nemiroff out of solidarity with Ukraine.”

Vodka, the neutral, clear spirit that a great many people would say only tastes of alcohol, doesn’t normally make newspaper headlines.

With annual global sales of $46.6bn (£37.5bn), its a ubiquitous product that drinkers around the world add to soft drinks, use as the base for a cocktail, or down neat as a “shot”.

Yet last year, vodka suddenly found itself in the international media spotlight following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The start of the conflict resulted in Western consumers, retailers and governments boycotting and banning Russian vodkas.

At the same time, Western vodka brands that have Russian sounding names, such as global bestseller Smirnoff, were quick to point out that they aren’t actually from Russia. Smirnoff is instead owned by UK drinks giant Diageo.

The national origin of vodka is both hotly contested and difficult to define due to changing borders and countries over the centuries. But most drinks historians would agree that today’s Poland, Russia and Ukraine are the historic heart of vodka production.

With Russian vodkas still mostly absent from international shelves, previously little-known Ukrainian brands are continuing to take their place. Yet maintaining production in a war-torn country is, unsurprisingly, not without its difficulties.

Immediately following the Russian invasion, Nemiroff had to close its main distillery for a month. This is located in the city of Nemyriv, some 250km (155m) south west of the capital Kyiv.

Like most businesses in Ukraine it has subsequently been affected by power cuts due to Russian attacks on electricity infrastructure. Despite this, the firm says it has seen a big rise in exports, including a two-fold increase in sales in the UK.

“It’s heart warming to see people supporting our country through their purchasing decisions,” says Mr Sorochynskiy.

Fellow Ukrainian vodka boss Dima Deinega says that his distillery, based in the city of Zhytomyr, west of Kyiv, “has showcased amazing resilience”.

“We’ve dealt with shelling and no power supplies but are still able to produce and export vodka,” says Mr Deinega, whose brand is called Dima’s.

Since the start of the conflict he has been giving a share of the profits to Ukrainian charities.

“[Global] sales were rising consistently before the war, but have increased significantly with people looking for ways to support Ukraine via our charitable initiatives, as well as to support Ukrainian products as a whole,” says Mr Deinega.

Katherine Vellinga grew up in Canada, the daughter of Ukrainian emigrees. Back in 2005 she had decided to move to Ukraine, and she became increasingly interested in Ukrainian vodka. So much so, that she and her husband bought a small distillery and brand called Zirkova.

Following Russia’s invasion the distillery had to close. To maintain some production, Ms Vellinga decided to open a second facility, this time more than 7,000km (4,000 miles) away in Ontario.

Supervised by the firm’s master distiller, the company’s Canadian brand is called Zirkova Unity, and all its profits go to Ukrainian charities. Production has continued in Canada despite the firm’s main distillery, in the Ukrainian city of Zolotonosha, south of Kyiv, reopening last September.

Commenting on the move to Canada, Ms Vellinga says that “necessity was the mother of invention”. She adds: “Our people in Ukraine encouraged us to keep fighting, to be resilient, to find a way to survive as that was the only way we could help Ukraine.

“We made a decision to survive and Ukrainians encouraged us to keep going.”

But does all vodka taste the same? “Absolutely not!” says Tony Abou Ganim, a US-based vodka expert.

“All you need to do is line up six vodkas, made from different raw materials, and coming from different parts of the world, to very quickly realise that all vodkas are not the same!”

In Poland, Russia and Ukraine, the heart of the so-called “vodka belt”, the spirit is traditionally drunk neat.

And although the origin of the drink is hotly debated, Poland certainly has the strictest legal rules that govern vodka’s production. Polish vodka can only be made from wheat, rye, oats, potatoes or triticale (a hybrid of wheat and rye), water and yeast.

This contrasts with vodkas from around the world that can use maize, rice, sugar, grape juice or even milk, plus any number of other ingredients or additives.

“Vodka is not a flavourless drink,” says Mariusz Dampc of the Polish Vodka Museum in Warsaw. “That is a very Western view,” he adds. “Polish vodka is all about the soil, the water, the climate and the human element: the terroir.”

Ms Vellinga adds that many “new world vodkas” – which she defines as those made outside of the drink’s historic heartland shouldn’t use the name.

“You can taste the difference between true vodka made out of grain or potato, and poor substitutes that use cheap ingredients such as corn, sugar beet, rice and sorghum,” she says. “Newer vodka brands adhere to this modern mistaken notion that vodka should be utterly tasteless and neutral, which is far from the truth.

“The subtle but important complexity and character of the world’s greatest vodkas prove it.”

Denmark, Netherlands gift Ukraine 14 more Leopard 2 tanks to fight off Russian troops

The Netherlands and Denmark have agreed to buy 14 Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine and give them.

“The Netherlands and Denmark today announce our intention to jointly acquire, refurbish and donate 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks for Ukraine,” the Danish Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

It said the German tanks would be supplied from “early 2024” and the estimated cost of 165 million euros ($180m) would be “equally divided”.

“In this way, we will jointly take part in the ‘Leopard 2 coalition’, supported by many partners and allies,” the statement said.

Dutch Defence Minister Kajsa Ollongren said in a separate statement, “Ukrainian and European security are inextricably linked.”

  • Elon Musk to sue Microsoft for illegally using Twitter data and removing its ads

Elon Musk to sue Microsoft for illegally using Twitter data and removing its ads

Elon Musk, Twitter boss, has threatened legal action against Microsoft for allegedly utilising data from his social media firm without his consent.

“They trained illegally using Twitter data. Lawsuit time,” the multi-billionaire said in a tweet.

Mr Musk was responding to Microsoft’s plan to remove Twitter from its corporate advertising platform.

He did not provide further details or evidence to support the claim.

Microsoft declined to comment when approached by the BBC on Thursday.

Earlier, the company said in a notice that its advertising platform would “no longer support Twitter” from Tuesday 25 April.

As a result, ad buyers would not be able to access their Twitter accounts through Microsoft’s social management tool.

“Other social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn will continue to be available,” Microsoft said.

Twitter’s press email responded to a query with a customary poo emoji.

In a separate tweet, in the discussion about the social media platform’s data, Mr Musk said he was “open to ideas”.

“But ripping off the Twitter database, demonetizing it (removing ads) and then selling our data to others isn’t a winning solution,” he added.

In February, Twitter started charging for the data it collects from “hundreds of millions” of users, with a basic plan starting at $100 a month.

The data allows users to “manage and track every aspect of your social media presence”, according to the platform.

Since buying Twitter for $44bn (£35.4bn) in October, Mr Musk has cut its workforce by around 80% and moved to boost the company’s finances through measures including charging users for “blue tick” verification.

In recent months, major companies including iPhone maker Apple reportedly halted advertising on the platform over concerns about how content was moderated on the site.

In November, Mr Musk said Twitter had seen a “massive” drop in revenue and blamed activists for pressuring advertisers.

Speaking to the BBC last week, he said Twitter had just months left to live when he took over. He also said “almost all advertisers have come back or said they are going to come back” to Twitter.

Mr Musk added that Twitter could be profitable by the second quarter of 2023, and he would be willing to sell the company if the right person came along.

‘We fully deserved this semi-final’ – Milan’s Inzaghi

Simone Inzaghi, the head coach of Inter Milan, has acknowledged that he had previously only daydreamed about his team making it to the Champions League last four.

The Nerazzurri advanced as runners-up before the LaLiga heavyweights despite being placed in what was known as a “group of death” early in the competition when they were paired with Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Inter beat Benfica 5-3 on aggregate following a 3-3 draw at San Siro in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, meaning they will face city rivals AC Milan in the semis for the first time since the 2002-03 season, while it will also be the first time the two will meet five times in one season.

“There is great happiness,” Inzaghi said after the game. “We played a great game against a difficult team.

“We fully deserved this semi-final, which before was only a dream. I’m happy for the boys and for our progress. We started with a very difficult group with Barcelona and Bayern Munich. We work every day to experience these evenings.”

Their passage to the semis of the Champions League for the first time since they won the competition in 2009-10 should relieve some pressure on Inzaghi, who has come in for criticism for the team’s league form, having not won any of their last five games in Serie A, losing four.

“Critics aren’t a problem,” he insisted. “I know where they come from. Some speak well, some speak bad.”

Federico Dimarco had a productive game down the Inter left against Benfica, providing six open-play crosses – twice as many as any other player – and claiming assists for Lautaro Martinez and Joaquin Correa after Nicolo Barella had earlier given the hosts the lead.

Roger Schmidt’s men equalised Barella’s goal through Frederik Aursnes, before late efforts from Antonio Silva and Petar Musa levelled things again.

“We’re very happy, it’s been many years since Inter made it to the semi-finals,” Dimarco told Amazon Prime. “There’s still one step left to get to the end.

“We played well, apart from some lack of attention for their goals. The assists? I worked all week for this, the important thing is that the team wins.

When asked about the prospect of facing Milan, he replied: “Let’s think about the other matches first. I’m calm, there’s still one step left for us to move forward.”

  • Take a look at the potential Man United, Sevilla lineups

Take a look at the potential Man United, Sevilla lineups

On Thursday, April 20, the second leg of Manchester United’s Europa League quarterfinal matchup against Sevilla is scheduled.

During the exciting game, a place in the semifinals will be on the line, and both teams are eager to advance.

When both clubs agreed to a 2-2 draw in the rematch played at Old Trafford last week, The Evening Standard believes that there will be something to play for in Andalusia.

United looked on course to put one foot in the semis after they raced into a 2-0 lead in that clash, only for major defensive blunders involving Harry Maguire and Tyrell Malacia to throw the tie wide open.

    Man United team news

United will take their trip to Spain on the back of a sudden injury crisis which has hit the team in recent days.

Erik ten Hag is in danger of missing the service of a number of key players, with defence the worst hit departed.

The duo of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez is expected to miss the tie, with the latter ruled out for the rest of the season.

Marcel Sabitzer, who shone in the first leg, is the other star player expected to miss the Andalusia trip alongside youngster Alejandro Garnacho.

Tom Heaton, Donny van de Beek and Phil Jones are all long-term absentees and will play no role.

Be that as it may, Ten Hag has been boosted with the imminent return of Marcus Rashford, who was recently spotted in training.

Christian Eriksen is the other player back from injury and is in contention for a starting spot.

    Predicted Man United XI

Given how crucial the tie is, Ten Hag is expected to field a strong XI for the away clash.

The Dutchman is likely to settle for a 4-2-3-1 formation, with David de Gea expected to keep his place between the sticks.

Harry Maguire is in line to partner Victor Lindelof at the heart of defence in the absence of both Varane and Martinez, with Luke Shaw returning on the left.

The biggest headache would be on the right, with Ten Hag likely to overlook Aaron WanBissaka in favour of Diogo Dalot, who was impressive against Nottingham Forest last weekend.

In midfield, Casemiro is expected to partner Eriksen in a defensive role, with Bruno Fernandes playing as a No.10.

Antony and Rashford are likely to lead the attack on either flank, with the returning Anthony Martial playing as the sole striker.

In 2022, Fameye broke Kofi Kinaata’s undefeated streak as the Songwriter of the Year, and he is hoping to maintain the status quo.
