Man Utd: Ten Hag wants players to behave like ‘robots’ to gain finesse

Erik ten Hag is aware that Manchester United’s players are only human, but he still believes that in order for them to succeed, they must “act as robots.”

On Sunday, when United made their Premier League comeback against top-four rivals Newcastle United, they suffered a lacklustre 2-0 loss.

Despite their success in the FA Cup and Europa League, they have only earned one point in their last three games in the top flight, placing them fifth in the standings.

Ten Hag, however, has no doubt his squad can rediscover their best.

“I agree we return to old habits, but I also know there are fluctuations,” he told The Guardian. “[Players] are not robots. But we have to act as robots, as machines.

“We have to expect and demand of our players that they match the standards so when we are not doing [that] we are disappointed because that is our job.

“We have shown in so many games that [we can do that]. It was a tough, very strong belief, [with] confidence and passion and togetherness.

“We have, and have shown it in many games. We have shown we can win the games, but you have to do it in every game because that is the demand of Manchester United.”

United can push themselves back into the Champions League qualification places with a win over Brentford on Wednesday, having games in hand on fourth-place Tottenham.

Ten Hag will also have one eye on next week’s return to Europa League action, with the club set to host Sevilla a week on Thursday in the first leg of their quarter-final clash.

Chelsea, Liverpool blasts ‘hateful’ chants after scoreless game

The “vile” chants that were heard during the teams’ 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday have been denounced by Chelsea, Liverpool, and the Premier League.

Chelsea and Liverpool played out their fourth goalless draw in as many head-to-head matches as the Blues missed numerous opportunities to win their first game following the firing of Graham Potter.

Some home fans disrupted the game by chanting about the 1989 FA Cup semi-final disaster at Hillsborough, which claimed the lives of 97 Liverpool fans.

Tuesday’s match was not the first to be overshadowed by such songs this season, with Manchester City expressing regret after similar chants were heard at their 4-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday.

A statement released by Chelsea shortly after full-time read: “Chelsea FC condemns the inappropriate chants heard from some home fans during this evening’s game.

“Hateful chanting has no place in football and we apologise to anyone who has been offended by them.”

Liverpool subsequently responded to Chelsea’s apology on Twitter, calling for supporters to stop partaking in the grim chants.

“We know the impact these vile chants have on those who continue to suffer as a result of football tragedies,” read a Tweet from the club’s account. “For their sake, this has to stop.”

The Premier League, meanwhile, addressed the situation in another Tweet, which read: “The Premier League condemns the tragedy chanting heard at tonight’s match between Chelsea and Liverpool.

“We continue to treat this as an unacceptable issue and are seeking to address it as a priority.”

Ex-Scottish minister, Nicola Sturgeon’s husband arrested in relation with SNP funding and finances probing

Peter Murrell, the husband of Nicola Sturgeon, according to reports has been detained in connection with an investigation into the funding and assets of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Detectives are questioning the former SNP chief executive while he is being held in custody.

A 58-year-old man was reportedly detained as part of an ongoing investigation, according to Police Scotland.

Officers are also carrying out searches at a number of addresses, the force added.

Police Scotland has been investigating the spending of money which was earmarked for Scottish independence campaigning.

The SNP said in a statement: “Clearly it would not be appropriate to comment on any live police investigation but the SNP have been co-operating fully with this investigation and will continue to do so.

“At its meeting on Saturday, the governing body of the SNP, the NEC, agreed to a review of governance and transparency – that will be taken forward in the coming weeks.”

A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said: “COPFS will continue to work with police in this ongoing investigation.

“It is standard practice that any case regarding politicians is dealt with by prosecutors without the involvement of the Law Officers.”

It comes less than a week after Humza Yousaf was legally sworn in as Scotland’s sixth first minister – replacing Ms Sturgeon after her shock resignation in February.

Mr Murrell, who married Ms Sturgeon in 2010, stepped down as SNP chief executive during the recent leadership campaign.

  • Mario Balotelli hits back at Roberto Mancini in enigmatic comments

Mario Balotelli hits back at Roberto Mancini in enigmatic comments

Mario Balotelli appears to have responded to Roberto Mancini’s remarks that he won’t be called up for international duty any longer.

Since it is believed that Italy’s strike situation is dire, the two have been reading subtle jabs over the past few weeks.

Injuries to his strikers prompted Mancini to call up little-known Mateo Retegui, an Argentine player, during the most recent international break.

The head coach then whined that the nation was short on strikers, forcing Balotelli to volunteer his services.

The last time the former Manchester City striker was called up was in 2018 and from Mancini’s latest comments, he won’t be getting another call-up anytime soon.

Speaking during an event in Italy, as quoted by Sports Bible, the tactician was asked about Balotelli’s chances to which he said: “I think that chapter is closed.” Balotelli responds.

Balotelli then took to his Instagram stories and uploaded two cryptic posts.

The first one was his own emoji laughing, while the second one bore the message; “You don’t become king by chasing the queen; you become king by chasing the crown.”

The two have previously worked together at Manchester City.

Italy will be looking to defend their Euro crown in Germany next year after missing out on World Cup last year.

Balotelli currently plays for Swiss side Sion FC.

Balotelli contradicts Mancini Sports Brief had earlier reported that there is certainly no love lost between Mario Balotelli and Roberto Mancini as the former Manchester City striker openly disputed the coach’s recent claims about Italy’s attacking options.

Balotelli, 32, took to Instagram to make clear his feelings after Mancini appeared to bemoan the apparent lack of strikers in the Italy team.

In the wake of Italy’s 2-1 defeat to England in the UEFA European Championship, Mancini said his side was struggling in the attacking department.

  • Lionel Messi offered astounding €400 million by Saudi club Al-Hilal amid PSG exit rumours -reports

Lionel Messi offered astounding €400 million by Saudi club Al-Hilal amid PSG exit rumours -reports

Argentine superstar and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) player Lionel Messi reportedly received a staggering offer worth €400 million from a Saudi Arabian club, Al-Hilal.

The news comes amid persistent rumours that World Cup winner Messi will leave PSG this summer rather than agree to a new contract.

If the legendary player accepts what is being termed as “mother of all deals” it would give a new boost to Saudi Arabia with having two soccer greats playing in their professional league tournaments as Cristiano Ronaldo is part of the Al Nassr club after completing $75 million per-year move last year.

The bumper offer from the Riyadh club includes all the advantages set for the player, and meets the demands of the best FIFA men’s player of the year 2022 and captain of Argentina, the 2022 Qatar World Cup Champions, Okaz/Saudi Gazette cited sources as having said.

Meanwhile, Jorge Horacio Messi, father and business agent of Messi, has been spotted in Riyadh in recent days, sparking speculation that he could be negotiating a deal for his son.

In his capacity as tourism ambassador of Saudi Arabia, Messi traveled to the Kingdom on several occasions for promotional activities.

If Messi departs, PSG would likely be doubly determined to keep hold of Kylian Mbappe for at least one more season, a year after persuading the France striker to sign a new deal and turn down overtures from Real Madrid.

As well as the uncertainty over Messi’s future, there are doubts about coach Christophe Galtier, who was only appointed last July but has come under intense pressure following recent results.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo hammered opponent with thrilling skill

Cristiano Ronaldo hammered opponent with thrilling skill

Since joining Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, Cristiano Ronaldo has maintained fantastic fitness.

The former Manchester United forward has been on fire, and Al-Nassr is in a strong position to compete with Al-Ittihad for the Saudi Pro League championship as a result of his outstanding play.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner continued his incredible run in front of goal against Al-Adalah on Tuesday night at Prince Abdullah Bin Jalawi Stadium.

Manchester Evening News reports that the Portuguese star added to an impressive goal tally during the clash as he netted a brace to inspire Al-Nassr to a 5-0 epic win over the hosts.

Ronaldo netted his first from the penalty spot moments before the break and added the second in the second half.

    Ronaldo destroys opponent

Apart from Ronaldo’s two goals, one other outstanding thing from his performance against Al-Adalah was his insane skill that left his opponent in the dust.

GiveMeSports reports that the 38-year-old showed an impressive turn of pace to leave an opponent in the dust before he fired a fierce left-footed shot at goal.

The forward’s incredible skill in the run-up to the sent fans into a meltdown, with some taking to social media in praise of the Portugal international.

One posted: “Fair play, good goal.” A second noted: “With his weak foot…. Goat forever.” Another added: “I love this.I cant remember how many of this kinda goals have seen. Happy for my man. A Goated G.O.A.T.”

Mexican referee, Hernandez slapped with 12-game ban after kneeing player in groin

After kneeing a player in the groyne during a Liga MX match between America and Leon, Mexican referee Fernando Hernandez was given a 12-match ban.

During Sunday’s 2-2 draw, Hernandez kneed Leon midfielder Lucas Romero as he and his teammates surrounded the referee and demanded a VAR review into an America equaliser.

The bad-tempered affair saw both coaches dismissed following a scuffle which left Leon boss Nicolas Larcamon with a torn shirt, while one 10-minute second-half stint featured six yellow cards.

Any referees looking to replicate Hernandez’s methods for dealing with dissenting players may have to think twice, with the league’s disciplinary committee hitting the official with a long ban.

After widely shared footage showed Hernandez kneeing Romero while issuing him with a yellow card, the Leon man described the incident as a “misunderstanding”.

“Referees are human beings, many times they can make mistakes and those mistakes end up developing what happened, a lot of misunderstandings,” he told Mexican broadcaster TUDN.

Hernandez has since apologised to Romero and said he “would never attack him or any other player”, promising to accept the punishment handed down by the league’s disciplinary committee.

  • Juventus ‘very angry’ after Lukaku’s penalty as Allegri laments the ‘avoidable’ leveller

Juventus ‘very angry’ after Lukaku’s penalty as Allegri laments the ‘avoidable’ leveller

Romelu Lukaku’s dramatic equaliser for Inter on Tuesday left Juventus “very angry,” leaving Massimiliano Allegri to lament a “avoidable situation.”

Juan Cuadrado’s 83rd-minute goal in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semifinal was cancelled out by Lukaku’s 95th-minute penalty at the Allianz Stadium.

After Lukaku restored parity, there were chaotic scenes as Cuadrado and Inter captain Samir Handanovic were given their marching orders for fighting after the game had ended.

While Allegri suggested he missed the carnage unfolding after the full-time whistle, the Juve coach called on the Bianconeri players to regroup after an avoidable late goal for Simone Inzaghi’s visitors.

He told Mediaset: “I don’t know anything because the match was over and I went in. I know there were some dismissals.

“It’s a pity because the game was over and we needed to be quicker on the first ball that came out.

“[Filip] Kostic could have been a little smarter but the match was balanced and the result was fair. We’re sorry because with 20 seconds to go it was an avoidable situation.

“I saw the boys very angry about this draw but we have to be good at accepting it.”

Juve will head to San Siro on April 26 with the last-four clash finely poised, though Allegri’s side must focus on a crucial run-in this month before then.

The Bianconeri visit Lazio in Serie A on Sunday, trailing the top four by just six points despite their 15-point deduction following an investigation into previous transfer dealings.

A two-legged Europa League quarter-final against Sporting CP follows either side of a league meeting with Sassuolo, before Juve host Serie A leaders Napoli ahead of the return Coppa Italia meeting with Inter.

Looking ahead to that second leg, Allegri said: “We have that match in a month, now we have important commitments.

“We have three league games before the return plus Sporting. We’ll think about the Coppa Italia later.

“It will be a tight match where we will need to win, but now we need to focus on the championship.”

See Henderson confrontation with Alisson Becker as Chelsea and Liverpool lose points once more

Liverpool players confronted each other during their game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on April 4th.

Team captain Jordan Henderson appeared to have a bone to pick with goalkeeper Alisson Becker and told him off in the full glare of the cameras.

The Brazilian custodian did not take being spoken down to lightly and equally responded with a few tough words of his own before the situation quickly simmered down.

Jurgen Klopp’s side made the trip to London looking to bounce back from the 4-1 humiliation at Manchester City over the weekend.

Chelsea, meanwhile, took to the game under a third different manager this season.

The hosts were the better side of the night, but like their past four encounters, it ended in a stalemate.

Henderson was livid with Liverpool’s defence after an error from Joel Matip nearly cost his side a goal.

    Joao Felix blazed his
effort over the bar as a quick introspection on the Liverpool side ensued.

It is not clear why the England international was angry with Alisson despite Matip being the one culpable for the error.

The Reds will now welcome Arsenal this weekend in what is set to be a season-defining game for the Gunners.

    Havertz’s disallowed goal
At the same time, Sports Brief reported that Chelsea fans were left incensed after Kai Havertz’s goal vs Liverpool on April 4th was chalked off for handball.

Havertz scored just before the hour mark. N’Golo Kante, who was making his first Chelsea start since August, laid off a wonderful through ball for the German, who failed to chip the ball over past an on-rushing Alisson Becker.

The ball, however, fell back kindly to him and it ricocheted into an empty net.

Frantic celebrations at Stamford Bridge were halted after replays showed that the ball was pushed in by Havertz’s arm.

Jose Mourinho stepping in Sampdoria-Roma clash helped mitigate harsh penalty for racist chant

After two league defeats to Sassuolo and a derby defeat to Lazio, AS Roma under Jose Mourinho’s leadership defeated Sampdoria 3-0 at the weekend.

The Italian capital club’s victory brought them closer to the top four thanks to goals from Stephan El Shaarawy, Paulo Dybala, and Georgino Wijnaldum.

There was an ugly incident during the game. The visiting team went down to 10 men after Colombian midfielder Jeison Murillo was shown a red card, and head coach Dejan Stankovic reacted furiously.

Racist chants from Roma fans met his reaction.

According to Football Italia, Mourinho gestured to the fans to stop the chants and spoke on the incident in defence of his former player after the game.

    Roma fined for racist chant

Jose Mourinho’s intervention during the game was well acknowledged by an Italian sporting judge, who decided on the incident and was lenient on the club.

“Roma have been fined €8,000 following insulting chants towards the opposing coach by the entirety of supporters in Curva Sud.

The sanction is mitigated because chants were not repeated after the active intervention of their coach,” the judge said in a statement via Tutto Mercato.

Speaking after the game, the Special One expressed disappointment at the fans. He claimed to have grown a thick skin against such behaviours and urged Stankovic to do the same.

The Serbian thanked his former boss and claimed not to have paid attention, and further expressed pride in his gypsy roots.

    Lukaku sent off for celebration

In another development, there was an incident of racism in Italian football last night in the Coppa Italia game between Juventus and Inter Milan.

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku endured a difficult evening from the Old Lady fans before he scored from the spot in the closing stages to finish the game levels.

Sports Brief reported that Lukaku was sent off for excessive celebration after doing shush to the fans who had abused him throughout the game, much to the disappointment of many football viewers.

We could have done better, but I had to leave like this – Axed Rodgers

If given the chance, Brendan Rodgers says he could have saved Leicester from relegation.

After a 2-1 loss at Crystal Palace the day before, Rodgers, 50, left the club on Sunday by mutual consent.

A four-year reign at the King Power Stadium came to an end with his departure, but the former Liverpool manager made it clear he still had unfinished business.

In a statement released via the LMA, Rodgers said: “I am obviously disappointed to depart so close to the end of the season and had every confidence we would have delivered the results needed to preserve the club’s Premier League status.

“I would like to wish everybody at the club the very best of luck as they seek to continue to deliver on this objective.

“There’s a strong infrastructure and environment in place that puts the club on a strong footing to move forward — a world-class training facility, a passionate and unswerving fan base, a group of great players full of ability and special owners.”

Rodgers is already eyeing the possibility of returning to the dugout and made a point of highlighting his FA Cup success in 2021.

He added: “I’m now looking forward to having a chance to reflect and recharge and get ready for the next opportunity.

“I would like to thank the chairman Mr Srivaddhanaprabha and the board for giving me the opportunity to manage Leicester and make history with this great club over the past four years.

“We forged a special relationship and I’ll always have the utmost respect and affection for them.

“The players, my staff and I gave it our all every day and I’ll always be proud of what we were able to achieve.

“Winning against Chelsea at Wembley in 2021 to deliver a first FA Cup for the club and supporters, together with securing European qualification in consecutive seasons, are moments I will never forget.”

  • Oil drilling in the Gulf is safer, but there is still a cause for worry

Oil drilling in the Gulf is safer, but there is still a cause for worry

A new study by the National Academy of Sciences found that although regulators and industry have reduced some risks associated with deep water exploration in the gulf 13 years after the massive Deepwater Horizons spill contaminated the Gulf of Mexico, some problematic safety issues still exist.

According to the report released on Tuesday, the establishment of a dedicated federal agency for offshore oil drilling safety, the development of an industry-wide safety centre, and new technology have all reduced risks.

However, given that 80% of workers are contractors on rigs, federal inspectors continue to have little control over them.

The report also worried about the lack of an industrywide safety culture that integrates accident prevention into everyday work.

“There are a lot of things that are happening that are really good, but the industry is not at a place″ where it should be, said panel chairman Richard Sears.

He was a longtime Shell executive who was the chief technical adviser to the federal panel that initially investigated the 2010 explosion on the BP rig that killed 11 people and caused America’s biggest oil spill — more than 130 million gallons.

A culture that gave lip service to safety but didn’t really integrate it into the way it does business was part of the problem with the accident, Sears and others said. Some companies are treating safety the proper way — including giving flash bonuses to workers who stopped drilling because of potential dangers — but others “that don’t seem to get it,” he said.

“They have not figured out how to naturally embrace safety in particular… in who they are and what they do” but instead treat it like a box to check off, Sears said.

That’s far different from the more uniform industrywide safety culture seen in commercial airlines and nuclear power plants, he said.

There’s a “long list” of specifics on safety culture process that “other high-risk industries” like aviation, have done but the drillers have not, said Steve Murawski, a University of South Florida marine ecologist who was a top NOAA scientist during the spill.

Federal safety inspectors lost a court case giving them power to directly regulate contractors so when they find a problem on an offshore rig they can ding the operator but not the contractor who is actually creating the problem, Sears said.

It’s then up to the operator to crack down on the contractor, and it becomes complicated and not as effective, he said.

The report said that was one of the problems on the Deepwater Horizons rig.

Murawski, who wasn’t part of the study team, said the report highlights many of the recommendations that still haven’t been put into effect 13 years after that disaster, especially changes to a key oil spill law.

He also said the report shows the need for greater transparency into industry actions.

Another outside scientist involved in the spill, Christopher Reddy of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, said he was impressed by “the amount of positive change since 2010” but then that was offset by the safety culture issue.

The oil and natural gas industry and the federal government have together taken great strides to enhance the safety of offshore drilling operations,” American Petroleum Institute Vice President Holly Hopkins said.

National Academy President Marcia McNutt, who was a top Obama administration official dealing with the spill in 2010, said her concern is that officials are preparing for the last disaster, not the next one.

Still, McNutt said, the public should find the report “at least partially reassuring that this isn’t high school or elementary school shootings in terms of sticking your head in the sand and ignoring the problem.”

  • After Trump’s arraignment, what is next ?Find out

After Trump’s arraignment, what is next ?Find out

Today is just the beginning in what could prove to be a long, drawn-out legal process for Donald Trump.

Legal cases like this can take months, sometimes even years to play out, but here are some of the things we know have to happen after Trump appears in court.

    Disclosure of evidence

Within 15 days of the arraignment, the prosecution must hand over all evidence gathered as part of the investigation to the defence.

This is known as “discovery” and includes the minutes from the grand jury process, testimony of every witness interviewed by law enforcement (although some may be redacted), every exhibit shown to the grand jury, and other records prosecutors obtained such as telephone records, tapes, emails etc.

    Motions will be filed

Trump’s team has already said they will file motions to dismiss the case before it goes to trial.

Generally, the defence has 45 days to file motions after arraignment, but the judge has discretion to grant more time.

Without knowing what is in the indictment, we can’t predict what tack Trump’s lawyers will take, but he has already floated the idea of filing a motion to transfer the case out of Manhattan.

Motions to change venue are rarely granted as the defence would need to convince the judge that Trump wouldn’t be able to get a fair hearing in New York due to pre-trial publicity.

With the amount of media attention this case has already generated across America, it is hard to see a judge agreeing to that.

Other motions will likely hinge on arguments about the statute of limitations having expired, the nature of the charges involving federal campaign violations, or other attacks on the sufficiency of the evidence.

Jeremy Saland, a former assistant district attorney, suggested Trump’s team could file catch-all motion to dismiss the indictment — known as a “Clayton motion”— seeking to have the judge throw the case out not on the merits, but in the interests of justice.

     Trump’s day in court

The “speedy trial” rule in New York states that prosecutors must be ready to try a felony case within six months, but what’s on the books is frequently different to what happens.

Mr Saland added: “I could see this go north of year. They are going to file every motion in book.”

  • Trump’s last message to supporters ahead of trial reads ‘Today we mourn the loss of justice in America’

Trump’s last message to supporters ahead of trial reads ‘Today we mourn the loss of justice in America’

In an email to his supporters, Donald Trump declared that “today we mourn the loss of justice in America.”

He writes: “Today is the day that a ruling political party ARRESTS its leading opponent for having committed NO CRIME.

“As I will be out of commission for the next few hours, I want to take this moment to THANK YOU for all of your support.

“Our nation is becoming a Marxist Third World country that CRIMINALIZES dissent and IMPRISONS its political opposition.”

He goes on: “We are a nation that declared its independence from the world’s biggest empire, won two world wars, and landed the first man on the moon.

    “Resilience is in our blood.

“Our movement has overcome so much.

“And there is no doubt in my mind that we will prevail once again and WIN the White House in 2024.”

  • Ancelotti says Kroos and Modric are ‘untouchable’ but Clasico is not assured

Ancelotti says Kroos and Modric are ‘untouchable’ but Clasico is not assured

Toni Kroos and Luka Modric were described by Carlo Ancelotti as “untouchable” at Real Madrid, but he did not guarantee that either midfielder would start against Barcelona.

Madrid travels to Camp Nou on Wednesday for the second leg of a Copa del Rey semifinal matchup in which they are down 1-0 thanks to an own goal by Eder Militao in the first meeting from a month ago.

Both Kroos, 33, and Modric, 37, started that game; however, they were both replaced late in the second half.

While Kroos played the duration of Madrid’s 6-0 win over Real Valladolid on Sunday, Modric was an unused substitute.

That would suggest Ancelotti was protecting the latter ahead of the third Clasico the space of a month, but Madrid’s coach declared neither of his veteran campaigners in midfield are guaranteed starters.

“Kroos and Modric are untouchable but that doesn’t mean they’re going to play tomorrow,” Ancelotti told reporters.

“There are many untouchables but then you have to choose an eleven. I have to think about the resources I have on the bench.

“Starting isn’t the most important thing, the important thing is to be effective [the game].”

While Kroos and Modric approach the twilight of their careers, Madrid are looking to build for the future with Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga, who has been a consistent starter since the season resumed following the World Cup.

Asked about the importance of the physicality and athleticism that the France duo can provide, Ancelotti said: “If we talk about energy, it’s clear that in these games it’s important.

“An effective start from above can also give you an advantage.”

However, he acknowledged “there’s a lot of pressure in these games”, adding that “the experience of veterans can be important”.

With Madrid one of the clubs reportedly pushing to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham, Kroos and Modric could face uncertain futures.

They are both entering the final few months of their contracts, albeit renewals are said to be on the table.

“I see the players every day and they are very focused. It can be thought that when a contract ends it can affect them,” Ancelotti said.

“It doesn’t affect them and I don’t have to tell them anything because they are very professional.

“Each one has to evaluate the role they have. It is the discussion that a player has to make and if they want to renew it is because they like the role they have.”

Asked if he will discuss his team selection with any players left out of his starting XI, Ancelotti added: “Nothing special. I cannot talk to every single player who is not going to start.

“If they need to talk, my door is always open, but this group of players do not ask about explanations, they understand the situation, the moment.

“There are a lot of players who are very important, and the door will always be open to them.”

Finland officially joins NATO after a brief welcoming ceremony

Sweden joins the largest military alliance in the world, NATO, becoming it’s 31st member.

The Nordic country’s policy of neutrality has been formally ended by Finland’s historic decision to join NATO.

The move was hailed as “a good day for Finland’s security, for Nordic security, and for NATO as a whole” on Tuesday by Jens Stoltenberg, the leader of the largest military alliance in history.

Finland applied for NATO membership a year ago in May, alongside Sweden, as fears of Russian aggression rose in northern Europe following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

But Sweden is still waiting to join the group, which now comprises 31 members.

Finland’s border with Russia stretches across 1,300km (800 miles).

Russia casts NATO enlargement as a threat to its security and has said it will respond to Finnish membership by boosting its military capacity in its western and northwestern regions.

Finland soon to be NATO’s new bee, Russia infuriated, threatening counter measures

Russia has issued a warning as Finland joins the largest military alliance in the world as its 31st member.

According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Finland will join the world’s largest military alliance on Tuesday, becoming its 31st member.

In response, Russia has warned that it will strengthen its defences.

“This is a historic week,” Stoltenberg told reporters on Monday on the eve of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.

“From tomorrow, Finland will be a full member of the alliance.”

He said he hopes Sweden, who applied for membership at the same time as Finland, will also be able to join NATO in the coming months.

The former Norwegian prime minister said on Tuesday “we will raise the Finnish flag for the first time here at the NATO headquarters.

It will be a good day for Finland’s security, for Nordic security and for NATO as a whole”.

Stoltenberg said Turkey, the last NATO country to have ratified Finland’s membership, will hand its official texts to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday.

Stoltenberg said he would then invite Finland to do the same.

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Defence Minister Antti Kaikkonen will attend the ceremony along with Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto.

“It is a historic moment for us,” Haavisto said in a statement. “For Finland, the most important objective at the meeting will be to emphasise NATO’s support to Ukraine as Russia continues its illegal aggression.

We seek to promote stability and security throughout the Euro-Atlantic region.”

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said Moscow would respond to Finland becoming a NATO member by bolstering its defences.

“We will strengthen our military potential in the west and in the northwest,” Grushko said in remarks carried by the state RIA Novosti news agency.

“In case of deployment of forces of other NATO members on the territory of Finland, we will take addition steps to ensure Russia’s military security.”

  • Shaw renews Man Utd contract

    Shaw renews Man Utd contract

Luke Shaw has extended his contract with Manchester United, keeping him under contract through the end of the 2026–2027 season.

After the club exercised its option to extend his prior contract in December, the England international’s Old Trafford contract was set to expire at the conclusion of the following campaign.

Shaw, who is in his ninth season with United, has been instrumental in Erik ten Hag’s success this year, appearing in 36 of their 47 games.

“Nine years ago, I signed for this amazing club, and I’m thrilled to be extending my stay,” said the 27-year-old, who has made 249 appearances for United.

“I’ve grown immensely since coming to Manchester all those years ago, both as a person and as a player. I know what is needed to succeed at a club like this.

“We’re at the beginning of our journey under the manager and his coaching staff. We’ve been successful already this season, but we want much more.

“There’s a great opportunity to create something special here, and I’m going to give everything to be part of that.”

Shaw has won the Europa League and two EFL Cups during his near-decade with United, whom he joined from Southampton in June 2014 for a fee in the region of £30million.

United are also in advanced talks with fellow long-serving player David de Gea over fresh terms, while discussions are ongoing with Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot.

United’s director of football John Murtough said: “Luke is a massively important player to the squad and has grown into one of the best defenders in the world.

“He has been at the club for nearly a decade and understands the expectations for success, and the hard work, commitment and high standards required to achieve it.

“He has added leadership to his other outstanding abilities, and we all look forward to seeing him in a United shirt for years to come.”

United lost 2-0 to Newcastle United on Sunday, in a potentially damaging defeat in the race for the top four.

They will look to bounce back against Brentford on Wednesday.

  • Allegri is worried of an injured Inter that is falling

Allegri is worried of an injured Inter that is falling

Despite the Nerazzurri’s current downward spiral, Massimiliano Allegri is adamant that Juventus will not undervalue Inter Milan.

Less than three weeks have passed since their most recent Serie A match when the two teams square off in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals on Tuesday.

In that instance, both teams left the pitch with 10 men after a heated match thanks to a goal from Filip Kostic that gave Juventus a 1-0 victory.

That result contributed to a four-game winless streak for Inter, but despite their troubles, Allegri still sees Simone Inzaghi’s side as a serious threat.

“It’s a different competition, but it’s always Juventus [versus] Inter,” he said. “We must create the conditions in order to qualify.

“It’s not an easy game. Inter remain a strong side, regardless of the moment [they are in]. Actually, it is in these moments that we have to keep our attention.

“Too much praise for Juventus could lead us to lose touch with reality. We face a strong team, physically and technically.

They have lost a few games, [but] we need to pay attention.”

On the under-fire Inzaghi, who has led both Lazio and Inter to Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana success as a coach, Allegri believes his record speaks for itself.

“I think Inzaghi is doing a great job,” he added. “Inter are a strong team regardless of their moment. It’s dangerous to meet these teams now.

We need to be fully focused.”

Allegri confirmed the availability of Federico Chiesa and offered a positive update on Paul Pogba’s ongoing recovery.

    “[Chiesa] is available.

He had his knee checked in Austria. He has this tendon inflammation, but he’s feeling better and he’ll improve.

He is available and he’ll go on the bench.

“Paul Pogba has partially trained with the team. From Wednesday, he will stay with the team more and work to improve his shape.”

  • Amir Khan banned from boxing and all other sports after anti-doping violation

Amir Khan banned from boxing and all other sports after anti-doping violation

Amir Khan was given a two-year suspension from all sports after testing positive for a prohibited substance; the suspension began on April 6, 2022, and it was determined that Khan had taken the substance by accident.

Khan accepts the violation, but maintains that it was not his intention to do so.

After testing positive for a prohibited substance following his fight with Kell Brook last year, Amir Khan was given a two-year suspension from all sports.

After losing to Brook in Manchester on February 19, 2022, UK Anti-Doping reported that Khan, 36, tested positive for the anabolic agent ostarine.

Khan, who announced his retirement in May last year, accepted a violation of anti-doping rules but said he had not intentionally ingested the substance, an argument accepted by an independent panel following a hearing in January.

A UKAD statement said: “Mr Khan’s two-year ban is deemed to have commenced on April 6 2022 (the date his provisional suspension was imposed) and will expire on April 5 2024.”

Khan was stopped in the sixth round of his grudge fight with bitter rival Brook 14 months ago in what proved to be his final professional bout.

He unified world titles at super-lightweight and faced pound-for-pound stars Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Terence Crawford during a 40-fight career, featuring 34 wins and six defeats.

The Bolton fighter had launched his pro career in 2005 after winning an Olympic silver medal at the 2004 Athens Games.

  • Potter’s sack was too harsh – Former Chelsea star Gus Poyet

Potter’s sack was too harsh – Former Chelsea star Gus Poyet

Gus Poyet, a former player for the Blues, said that Graham Potter’s dismissal from Chelsea was “harsh,” but ultimately it was the cost of falling short of expectations.

When new co-owner Todd Boehly started to make his presence known at Stamford Bridge last September, the former manager of Brighton was chosen to succeed Thomas Tuchel.

Potter was fired less than six months into his position, however, after the team’s weekend loss to Aston Villa saw them drop to 11th in the Premier League.

Poyet, a Chelsea cult hero and former Brighton boss himself, feels the decision to fire the 47-year-old was a tough one but ultimately unsurprising given their slide down the table.

He said: “I think it was a difficult period. They had a few good results, especially in the Champions League, and it looked [like] a new beginning.

“But football nowadays, it depends on so many things. We don’t analyse performances anymore, only a result. I think for Graham in particular, it’s harsh.

“Brighton to Chelsea is a big change. That is a learning process, but at the same time, it’s Chelsea. When you are in a team like Chelsea, with the money spent, you definitely cannot be 11th.”

Having dismissed Champions League-winning coach Tuchel in order to install Potter, Poyet feels Boehly will be cautious when it comes to his next pick.

He added: “He’s learned that at Chelsea, it’s important to win. If Chelsea don’t win, the fans are not going to be happy because the Chelsea fans are winners and they feel the need to win.

“I think personality is very important. I think it’s very important when a coach in the situation that Chelsea are now can start winning games, but at the same time they will develop young players.

“I don’t know how many managers will walk into a club in the quarter-final of the Champions League. It’s a dream job. But I think Chelsea first need to be clear what are the characteristics of the manager [they want].”

US military kills top ISIL leader in raid on Syria: CENTCOM

US Central Command says Khalid Aydd Ahmed al-Jabouri was responsible for planning ISIL attacks in Europe.

The US announced on Tuesday in a statement that a senior ISIL (ISIS) leader had been killed in Syria by US forces in a “unilateral strike.”

The man was identified as Khalid Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri by US Central Command (CENTCOM).

Al-Jabouri “developed the leadership structure” for ISIS and “was responsible for planning ISIS attacks into Europe,” according to CENTCOM.”

The organization’s capacity to plan external attacks will be temporarily disrupted by his death, it added.

The raid that killed al-Jabouri happened on Monday.

CENTCOM said no civilians were killed or injured in the raid.

    It gave no further details.

  • Mamelodi Sundowns sets two records in its DStv Premiership title defence

Mamelodi Sundowns sets two records in its DStv Premiership title defence

The DStv Premiership had never been won in April by a team.

With seven games remaining in a league season, no team had also clinched the championship.

Following their sixth consecutive Premier Soccer League victory and record-extending 13th overall, Mamelodi Sundowns now hold these records.

The last team with a mathematical chance to catch the Brazilians did not need to kick a ball in order for them to do so. On Saturday night, SuperSport United and Chippa United drew 1-1.

With everything done and dusted, the team can now fully focus on the Nedbank Cup as well as the CAF Champions League.

Also, boasting the most points in a 30-match season (70 in the 2015/16 campaign), Sundowns is perfectly positioned to blow past this milestone having played just 23 games, accruing 59 points in that time.

    Xoki misses an absolute sitter

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on a staggering occurrence in a match between Richards Bay FC and Orlando Pirates.

Bucs defender Tapelo Xoki will want to forget a moment of madness during the encounter.

He was guilty of what could be the biggest miss of 2023 early in the match at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.

It did not prove to be costly, though, as the Buccaneers would emerge from the match with all three points.

With the goal at his mercy after the Rich Boyz’ goalkeeper Malcolm Jacobs parried a shot onto his path, Xoki skied his shot from less than two metres away from goal.

  • Stellini upset over lack of control as Tottenham begins new journey without Conte

Stellini upset over lack of control as Tottenham begins new journey without Conte

Tottenham began life without Antonio Conte on Monday by drawing 1-1 away to struggling Everton. Cristian Stellini lamented Tottenham’s lack of control.

The 68th-minute penalty from Harry Kane appeared to be enough for Spurs to win their first game under Stellini.

At Goodison Park, however, Michael Keane’s outstanding late long-range goal gave the Toffees a crucial point, frustrating their opponents.

Stellini was especially irritated by the result, particularly given Spurs’ man advantage for most of the second half after Abdoulaye Doucoure’s red card.

“My feeling now is that we have lost two points,” he told Sky Sports. “We had an [extra] man against them, we needed to control the game.

“We tried to do [that] but not in the way I expect. With 11 players, we have to do much better. You control the game with the ball, not without.”

Spurs were also reduced to 10 men in the final stages when Lucas Moura was dismissed for a late lunge on Keane before his equaliser.

Stellini, who was stood near Doucoure when he pushed Kane in the face to earn his red, believed both calls were fair from referee David Coote.

“I think Harry conceded a lot of tackles today before the red card,” he said. “Lucas, his tackle was too dangerous. Both of the red cards are clear for me.”

Despite missing out on a win, the draw moved Tottenham back into the top four, level on 50 points with Newcastle United and Manchester United.

Their rivals have two games in hand each, but Stellini believes Spurs can draw on their experience from last season’s battle for Champions League qualification.

“It will be a tough race,” he conceded. “But one year ago, we had 51 points. We were fifth, and today, we are fourth.

“We are in the same position [as] last season. We have to be ready to fight. Now we think about the next game.”

  • Graham Potter is gone, who is next? Check out his possible replacements

Graham Potter is gone, who is next? Check out his possible replacements

In order to find a long-term replacement for Graham Potter, Chelsea has launched a complex plan.

Since Potter was fired from his position as manager of the Blues on Sunday night, the team is currently without a permanent manager.

After Potter had earlier on Saturday led the west London team to a humiliating 2-0 loss to Aston Villa, he was fired shortly after.

The defeat came amid sustained calls by fans to have the 47-year-old sacked following Chelsea’s disastrous run of form and results under him.

Prior to Potter’s sacking, the west Londoners had dropped to 11th on the Premier league standings, with just 38 points.

    Who will replace Potter?

There are a string of world-class managers currently without a job that Chelsea could consider for the vacant Stamford Bridge.

While it remains unclear if the club will get a permanent replacement immediately, it is almost certain they will hire a substantive replacement for the remainder of the season.

According to The Mirror, former Brighton defender Bruno Saltor has already been put in interim charge as the search for Potter’s successor gets underway.

Sports Brief takes a look at eight prospective candidates that Chelsea could consider for the role.

    1. Julian Nagelsmann

The immediate former Bayern Munich boss is the most obvious name out there.

Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern at the end of February, with Thomas Tuchel, ironically, succeeding him. The German has also been linked with the vacant Tottenham job.

    2. Mauricio Pochettino

The former Paris Saint-Germain man is one of the most sought after managers currently without a job.

Poch has sufficient Premier League experience, having previously managed Tottenham and Southampton.

Incidentally, he has also been touted as a possible replacement for Antonio Conte at Tottenham.

    3. Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique is a natural winner, at least going by his managerial stint at Barcelona where he won two La Liga titles and the Champions League. He is among the high-profile managers without a job at the moment, having been sacked as the Spain head coach back in December.

    4. Brendan Rodgers

This is perhaps a surprise inclusion in this list. Brendan Rodgers was rendered jobless over the weekend after he was sacked as the Leicester boss.

The former Liverpool manager was handed his marching orders after overseeing a disastrous reign at the King Power Stadium that had seen the club drop into the relegation zone.

Despite the rough patch he endured with Leicester, Brendan is still highly rated in the Premier League.

    5. Zinedine Zidane

Zinedine Zidane is the other high-ranking manager currently unattached. Widely regarded as one of the most successful managers, Zidane has been out of work for two years, having left his role at Real Madrid in 2021. The former midfielder won two La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues during his Real Madrid reign.

    6. Carlo Ancelotti

Should Chelsea go for Carlo Ancelotti, it would mark the Italian’s second return to Stamford Bridge. Ancelotti won the Premier League and FA Cup during his first spell with the Blues and has gone on to enjoy an illustrious managerial career wherever he has managed. The legendary tactician is currently with Real Madrid and has been linked with the Brazil national team role.

    7. Thomas Frank

Thomas Frank has raised his stakes in the Premier League after an incredible run with Brentford this season.

Let Chris Hughton be, give him freedom to run the team – Ex-Fulham midfielder warns GFA against interference

A member of the 2006 Black Stars squad that helped Ghana become the first African nation to qualify for the World Cup, Derek Boateng, has issued a warning against interfering with Chris Hughton’s coaching duties.

As the nation hopes to end a 42-year wait for the AFCON title, Boateng is rallying support for the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager.

Hughton signed a 21 month contract to be coach of the Black Stars and supervised his first two games against Angola during the international break.

After an impressive two-legged game, where Ghana picked four points, Boateng believes Hughton has showed signs of succeeding as the Black Stars gaffer.

“He needs support because he is not too experienced on the African terrain. He needs support from the media, and the GFA should not interfere with his job.

He should be left to work independently and be allowed to call his choice of players because you can see that he is a very genuine coach so he needs to get that freedom to work so we can see how it goes,” Boateng told Asempa FM, as quoted by footballghana.com. “Chris Hughton has coached in the Premier League on several occasions, and we are all aware of his capabilities.

His profile is really good, but since this is his first national team job, he needs our support,” he added.

Boateng enjoyed a stellar career, playing for several clubs including Fulham in the English Premier League and Getafe in La Liga.

  • Barcelona demands LaLiga president’s resignation over alleged false accusations in Negreira case

Barcelona demands LaLiga president’s resignation over alleged false accusations in Negreira case

Barcelona has demanded the resignation of LaLiga president Javier Tebas after it was alleged that he provided false evidence against them.

According to a report from La Vanguardia published on Monday, Tebas provided prosecutors with documents that purported to implicate the club and two former presidents in the ongoing Negreira case.

It has been claimed Barcelona made payments in excess of €7million to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira’s company – DASNIL 95 SL – for written reports and DVD assessments of referees for the club prior to games. The payments were allegedly made between 2001 and 2018, when Negreira was vice-president of Spanish football’s refereeing committee.

According to the report, the documents issued by Tebas were part of another case, not linked to either of Barcelona’s former presidents and were decades old, something the LaLiga chief called “false” on social media.

However, Barca are keen for a deeper explanation from Tebas and want him to issue his resignation.

“Barcelona, as president Joan Laporta has said in recent weeks, feel the victim of a media lynching based on events that have never occurred: Barca have never bought referees,” a statement read.

“It is not the first time the president of LaLiga has used his media machinery to attack Barcelona but, aside from his usual nonsense, we could never have imagined he would have hoped to incriminate our club with false evidence.

“The news published by La Vanguardia is of such severity that it should alert all LaLiga clubs, as they are practices that should have no place in the functions attributed to the president of LaLiga. For this reason alone, but also out of dignity and respect for the presidency of LaLiga, Mr. Tebas should resign from his position.

“However, knowing his obsession with persecuting Barcelona and constantly showing his aversion and antipathy towards our club, we understand that he will persist in his behaviour of continuing to harm our club.”

Thierry Henry advises Messi to snub Barcelona’s return

Lionel Messi, a forward for Paris Saint-Germain, has been encouraged to think about making a fantastical comeback to FC Barcelona.

Thierry Henry wants Messi to visit his old haunts this summer. Messi and Henry were teammates at Barcelona from 2007 to 2010.

Messi’s current contract with PSG expires this summer, but talks between the player’s entourage and the team have hit a snag.

The uncertainty surrounding his future in Paris has prompted Barcelona and a host of other clubs to lure the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.

However, among Messi’s tall list of suitors, the Catalan giants have been favoured to land the 35-year-old’s signature, per MARCA.

Speaking about Messi’s possible destination in the future, Henry, who was on punditry duty for PSG’s home game against Olympique Lyon, said, as quoted by PSG Report: “Leo Messi should return to Barça, for the love of football and because he didn’t leave as he should have.

Henry continued: “I would like to see him [Messi] finish his career at Barcelona.”

Pique sends Messi warning to Barcelona

Meanwhile, former Spain and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has urged the Catalan giants to be circumspect about bringing Lionel Messi back to the club.

Pique’s caution comes off the back of Barcelona’s attempts to re-sign Lionel Messi from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Messi’s current deal with PSG expires at the end of the season. As a result, the 35-year-old has been linked with a potential return to his old stomping grounds.

But the 2010 World Cup winner, who runs his own league after calling time on his career, has urged fans of the club to be coy about the potential return of Messi.

Thomas Tuchel says Potter’s sack ‘did not trigger big emotions’ in him

Ever since Todd Boehly became the owner of Chelsea about a year ago, he has been conducting business in a way that is unusual in football circles.

He abruptly fired Thomas Tuchel in September, and he abruptly fired his replacement yesterday.

Graham Potter found it difficult to influence the Chelsea players and was unable to produce results on the pitch; after only seven months in the position, it was inevitable to fire him.

The Blues sporting department are working actively to find his replacement and, in the meantime, have installed one of his assistants Bruno Saltor as the interim boss.

According to Sky Sports, former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, whom former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel replaced last week, is the favourite to be the new head coach at Stamford Bridge.

    Tuchel speaks on Potter’s sack

Tuchel began his tenure at Bayern with a 4-2 win over his former club Borussia Dortmund and faces a tricky tie against SC Freiburg in the DFB Pokal tomorrow.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s game, he was asked about the vacant managerial role at Chelsea.

His response suggested he would have re-taken the job if he were unemployed, according to Mirror UK.

“I saw the news very late last night. The timing coincided with my appointment here. I really enjoyed working there and formed friendships for life.

But the club has changed a lot, so it didn’t really trigger big emotions in me,” he said.

Former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain Mauricio Pochettino and former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique are the other top two leading candidates considered for the job.

    Potter linked to Leicester job

Sports Brief reported that Graham Potter is linked to Leicester City job after the club also parted ways with head coach Brendan Rodgers yesterday.

In a shocking development, the Foxes appreciate Potter and could make a move for him in the coming days.

There have been 13 managerial sackings in the Premier League this season.

‘The most serious I have ever seen’ – UEFA president Ceferin emphasises the gravity of Barcelona referee scandal

Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA, referred to the Barcelona refereeing scandal as one of the “most serious” cases he had ever seen.

A UEFA investigation into alleged payments made to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of the Spanish refereeing committee, is ongoing against the LaLiga leaders.

The newspaper El Pais reported that Negreira’s company, DASNIL 95 SL, produced written reports and DVD assessments of referees for the club prior to games. It has been claimed that the total payments from Barcelona exceeded €7 million, spanning the years 2001 to 2018.

Barcelona maintain their innocence as prosecutors pursue charges against the Catalan side for alleged corruption, though LaLiga president Javier Tebas admitted the league is unable to sanction the club due to a statute of limitations in place.

However, Ceferin confirmed no such restrictions exist for UEFA and spoke about the significance of the allegations.

“The situation is extremely serious. It is so serious that, in my opinion, it is one of the most serious [situations] in football that I have ever seen,” he told Slovenian newspaper Ekipa.

“I cannot comment directly on this for two reasons. Firstly, because we have an independent disciplinary committee in charge of this. And secondly, because I have not dealt with this matter in detail.

“At the level of [LaLiga], of course, the matter is time-barred and can have no competitive consequences, but the proceedings are ongoing at the level of prosecutors. But as far as UEFA is concerned, there is nothing time-barred.”

Following an alleged attempt by a man to snatch someone’s girlfriend during a wake keeping, a machete fight broke out at Twifo Abodom in the Central Region, injuring seven people.

The Western Region’s Wassa East District’s Wassa Hemanso youth and Twifo Abodom’s were involved in the altercation.

When the Twifo Abodom youth attended a vigil (wake-keeping) at Wassa Hemanso, it is said that a heated argument broke out between the two youth groups.

During the event where some had taken to the dancing floor to dance, some Wassa Hemanso youth from nowhere slapped a boy from Twifo Abodom who was dancing with his girlfriend.

The victim went back to Twifo Abodom in the Central region to report the assault on him to the youth in his town for reprisal attack.

On Sunday, April 2, 2023, the angry youth numbering about 20, also laid ambush on the youth of Wassa Hemanso which resulted in a fight involving the use of machete, sticks and stones.

Both sides recorded casualties with some sustaining serious wounds and were rushed to the Twifu Ateiku Health Centre for treatment.

  • Klopp accepts past glory has prevented a sack by The Reds, not the streak of defeats in recent games

Klopp accepts past glory has prevented a sack by The Reds, not the streak of defeats in recent games

Graham Potter’s dismissal by Chelsea on Sunday has left Jurgen Klopp feeling like “the elephant in the room.”

After a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa, which dropped Chelsea to 11th place in the Premier League, Potter was fired less than seven months into his job at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues’ next match is at home against Liverpool, who are still licking their wounds from Saturday’s 4-1 loss at Manchester City.

According to their high standards, Liverpool is having a terrible season. The Reds have lost nine league games, are currently in eighth place, are eliminated from the FA Cup and the Champions League, and are eight points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

And Klopp is aware it is the success of previous campaigns that is keeping him in a job.

“The elephant in the room is why I’m still sitting here, in this crazy world. Last man standing,” Klopp told reporters.

“I’m aware of the fact that I’m sitting here because of the past, not because of what we did this season.

“If it was my first season, that would be slightly different. Yes, we have smart owners, they know about the situation, but you better ask them yourselves.”

Asked if he was afraid of becoming the 13th Premier League boss to lose their job this season, Klopp replied: “No, no. But I don’t think that Graham was afraid!

“There’s no need to be afraid, I’m here to deliver. I’m not here as a talisman or whatever, or for murals on walls. I’m here to deliver, nothing else in my mind. But I know I’m here because of the last few years.

“I don’t like the fact that I have to pretty much rely on that. Is it right or not? We will see in the future. I am fully in, there’s no doubt, but we have to sort it.

“We cannot just continue playing like we do from time to time. Not always, thank God, but from time to time – it’s really not allowed. I’m really disappointed by us, that we do these kind of things, but they happen. We have to find a way out, that’s what we’re working on.”

Potter’s dismissal followed on from Brendan Rodgers losing his job at Leicester City, with the Foxes in 19th place.

The pair of departures came a week on from Tottenham cutting ties with Antonio Conte.

“I think both clubs [Chelsea and Leicester] are not where they expect to be,” Klopp said. “I cannot say a lot more about it. I respect them a lot. I like them both. When I met them, really good people, fantastic managers, both of them, but still, things can go the wrong way.

“When decision-makers at a club think they have to change, then they change. I think we all accept that’s part of the business.

“That’s it, a strange week. Conte was the last week, [Julian] Nagelsmann [sacked by Bayern Munich], and now these two.

The season gets into a decisive part and people are afraid of maybe not reaching their targets.

“You would have to ask the decisive people what they will say about it. For all four I mentioned, the managing future is still bright. It’s not a disaster.”

Klopp was unsure how much Potter’s dismissal would impact Chelsea, noting he expects the Blues to set up in a similar system.

One thing he was sure about was the reaction that is required from Liverpool.

“As badly [needed] as possible,” Klopp said, before calling the defeat to City a “super strange game”.

“It’s unacceptable, but it happened anyway. Now we have to make sure we are ready, that’s it,” he added.

PSG urged to hire Simeone or Mourinho

It was earlier reported Paris Saint-Germain have been urged to appoint either Jose Mourinho or Diego Simeone, if they truly nurse any ambition of one day winning the UEFA Champions League.

PSG once again suffered heartbreak in Europe’s most prestigious club competition after they were knocked out in the round of 16 by Bayern Munich.

Former Liverpool midfielder, Danny Mills believes only a managerial change that involves the hiring of Mourinho or Simeone could make the Parisians become champions of Europe.

Messi’s reaction to PSG fans heckles ahead of clash between Bayern

Online videos have surfaced showing Lionel Messi’s response to the heckling of Paris Saint-Germain supporters.

Prior to the club’s Sunday night home loss in the French top division, Messi was the target of jeers and whistles from the supporters.

Since their club’s round-of-16 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has drawn the ire of some fans.

According to the supporters, Messi underperforms for Les Parisiens when compared to his performance for Argentina, according to ESPN.

At the start of PSG’s first league game since the international break, whistles and boos greeted the veteran’s name during the team’s lineup announcement over the loudspeaker, talkSPORT reports.

It proved to be an omen for a fourth defeat in Ligue 1 since the turn of the year, as Bradley Barcola’s early strike in the second half inflicted the latest loss for PSG at the Parc des Princes.

    How Messi reacted to jeering

Since then, a video of how Messi reacted to the fan outrage has now surfaced online. In the clip, the veteran forward took it in his stride by simply laughing.

Meanwhile, the club is racing against time to tie the Argentine to a contract extension before his current deal runs out this summer.

His situation has prompted keen interest from a variety of suitors, including Barcelona.

    PSG fans boo Messi again

Sports Brief also reported on PSG fans continuing to register their displeasure with Messi by jeering the 2022World Cup winner.

The 35-year-old has been subjected to boos by supporters, who claim he does not do enough when turning up for the Parisians.

Prior to the international break, Messi endured a similar treatment by fans after PSG’s surprise home loss to Rennes in Ligue 1.

Spain, France, and Germany are also likely to be contenders. England is one of the joint favourites along with perennial powerhouses USA.

While the focus will be on football, a major tournament would not be complete without pre-event hype surrounding the uniforms.

  • Increased activity underway at North Korea nuclear complex following Kim Jung’s bomb-fuel order – Reports

Increased activity underway at North Korea nuclear complex following Kim Jung’s bomb-fuel order – Reports

After the North Korean leader ordered an increase in the production of bomb fuel to increase the country’s nuclear arsenal, a U.S. think tank reported on Saturday that satellite images of the country’s main nuclear site show a high level of activity.

The Experimental Light Water Reactor (ELWR) at the Yongbyon site may be close to completion and moving into operational status, according to the 38 North North Korea monitoring project, which is based in Washington.

The report said the images showed that a 5 megawatt reactor at Yongbyon continued to operate and that construction had started on a support building around the ELWR.

Further, water discharges had been detected from that reactor’s cooling system.

New construction had also started around Yongbyon’s uranium enrichment plant, likely to expand its capabilities.

“These developments seem to reflect Kim Jong Un’s recent directive to increase the country’s fissile material production to expand its nuclear weapons arsenal,” the report added, referring to the North Korean leader.

On Tuesday, North Korea unveiled new, smaller nuclear warheads and vowed to produce more weapons-grade nuclear material to expand its arsenal, while denouncing stepped up military exercises by South Korea and the United States.

Its state media said Kim had ordered the production of weapons-grade materials in a “far-sighted way” to boost the country’s nuclear arsenal “exponentially.”

It is unclear whether North Korea has fully developed miniaturized nuclear warheads needed to fit on smaller weapons it has displayed and analysts say perfecting such warheads would most likely be a key goal if it resumes nuclear testing for the first time since 2017.

South Korea and the United States have warned since early 2022 that North Korea may resume nuclear testing at any time.

In a report last year, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) estimated North Korea had assembled up to 20 nuclear warheads, and probably possessed sufficient fissile material for approximately 45–55 nuclear devices.

  • Erik ten Hag explains Varane and Martinez’s substitution in Newcastle defeat

Erik ten Hag explains Varane and Martinez’s substitution in Newcastle defeat

The two teams met for the first time since Manchester United defeated Newcastle United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on February 26.

Casemiro and Marcus Rashford scored in that game.

Using goals from ex-Arsenal player Joe Willock and striker Calum Wilson to defeat the Red Devils 2-0 at St. James Park, Newcastle exacted their retaliation.

The victory put Newcastle ahead of United, who now have a goal advantage despite being tied on points.

If Tottenham defeats Everton later today, the Red Devils could drop out of the top four.

Ten Hag had a blip of his own.

In the 83rd minute, with the scores still at 1-0, he subbed off centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, a decision termed bizarre by the Manchester Evening News.

    Ten Hag explains defender subs

The Dutch manager’s decision came under scrutiny and Argentine defender, Martinez reacted angrily to the decision by smacking a chair in the dugout, as observed by Sun UK.

The decision did not pay off as Newcastle doubled their lead five minutes later through Wilson.

Ten Hag explained the decision after the game, as quoted by Metro UK: ‘‘We were not happy.

We played too high in midfield and it was easy for their two centre-halves to go and attack.

We had to play a little bit deeper. Therefore we made the sub. Then we made changes to bring more energy,’’ he said.

‘We were mindless, without focus’ – Nuggets coach Kerr as Nuggets hammered his team in 112-110 defeat

With coach Steve Kerr bemoaning his team’s lack of focus, the Golden State Warriors “didn’t deserve to win” against the Denver Nuggets.

On Sunday, Golden State fell to Denver 112-110, with Klay Thompson missing two chances to win the game with three-pointers in the final five seconds.

The Nuggets held a nine-point lead entering the final two minutes while playing without Nikola Jokic.

At the end of the first quarter, Golden State led 36–26, but at halftime, their advantage had shrunk to three points.

Kerr pointed to the second quarter as where it started to go wrong.

“Up until the middle of the second quarter, we had total control of the game,” he said. “Then we stopped playing. We lost our focus on both ends.

“We had control of the game and just handed that back to them. We gave them life and they took advantage.

“We were mindless out there and weren’t tough enough, disciplined enough and ultimately didn’t deserve to win.”

The Warriors sit sixth in the Western Conference with just games remaining in the regular season.

Two of those are on the road, with Golden State 9-30 outside of San Francisco this season. That is the worst record by a defending champion in the history of the NBA.

“Most of the questions when we lose are about what went wrong, and you try to point the finger, but if we obviously knew what to do about it, we would do it,” said Stephen Curry, who finished with 21 points in Denver.

“There’s a sense of urgency on these last three games, and not only just the wins but the vibe that you create going into a playoff series.

“That does matter. We’ve got to come to a realisation that if we’re going to win or do anything in the playoffs, this kind of game can’t happen.”

PSG is struggling, even with Messi and Mbappe and Laurent Blanc knows why

Laurent Blanc, the manager of Olympique Lyon, has explained why Paris Saint-Germain has had trouble since their Champions League round-of-16 exit.

By handing PSG their second straight home loss in Ligue 1 on Sunday, Blanc, who led PSG from 2013 to 2016, added insult to injury.

The loss to Lyon brings PSG’s total number of losses in the French top division to five, as their season is still in trouble.

Trying to make sense out of the Parisians’ sudden slump of form, especially since the turn of the year, Blanc intimated the club turns to lose focus when they miss out on their Champions League ambitions.

“The problem with Paris [PSG] is that when the number 1 objective is no longer accessible, it seems that the season no longer exists,” he said as quoted by PSG Report.

Blanc continued: “If the UEFA Champions League continues, everything is fine.

The Champions League stops, then everything stops and everything is over.

    It’s difficult to remobilize.”

    PSG’s Champions League collapse

The Parisians have craved Europe’s premier club competition since the takeover by Qatar Sports Investment in 2011.

However, winning the big-eared trophy has proved extremely elusive despite the massive cash injection into revamping the squad, per Sporting News.

The 2019–20 season saw PSG reach the Champions League final, where they lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich in Lisbon.

That was the closest PSG has ever came to winning the competition.

PSG stumble to another Ligue 1 setback

Sunday, April 2, saw Paris Saint-Germain lose at home for the second time in a row, falling 1-0 to Lyon, with their World Cup-winning superstar Lionel Messi being jeered by some fans, Sports Brief reported.

Bradley Barcola of Lyon handed PSG their most recent defeat at the Parc des Princes, two weeks after they lost 2-0 to Rennes at home.

The Parisians have lost five times in Ligue 1 this year, all in 2023, and Christophe Galtier’s team is now only six points ahead of Lens in second position and Marseille in third.

LeBron James eyes championship as Lakers chemistry gets better

The Los Angeles Lakers improved their chances of making the playoffs on Sunday with their third straight victory, and LeBron James insists they are still hoping to win a championship this year.

The Lakers defeated the Houston Rockets 134-109 to raise their record to 40-38 with four games remaining, moving them up to seventh place in the Western Conference behind the losers from the weekend, the Los Angeles Clippers (41-38) and Golden State Warriors (41-38).

The Los Angeles Lakers are in front of the New Orleans Pelicans (40-38), holding the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The top six teams advance automatically to the playoffs, while teams seven through ten compete in a play-in round.

Following a series of trades in February including the additions of D’Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, Rui Hachimura and Malik Beasley with Russell Westbrook departing, the Lakers have stormed into playoff contention, winning 10 of their past 14 games.

“We just want to put ourselves in the position to compete for a championship,” James told reporters.

“It’s a journey and obviously we don’t have as much chemistry as a lot of other teams that have aspirations to win a championship, but we’ve been building over the last month or so.

As Chelsea fires Graham, suitors including Leicester City allegedly ready to welcome the Englishman

Graham Potter lost his job at Chelsea, but other Premier League teams still think highly of the Englishman. According to shocking new reports, the 47-year-old still has a number of suitors, including Leicester City.

In an ironic turn of events, Leicester are also searching for a new manager after letting Brendan Rodgers leave after four years in charge.

When Rodgers left the Foxes, the team was in 19th place, while Potter was fired by Chelsea after the team fell to the bottom of the standings.

Rodgers left the Foxes with the club in 19th place, while Potter was dismissed by Chelsea after the club slipped to the bottom half of the log.

For Leicester, their next managerial appointment will be crucial, especially because they are fighting relegation.

According to TalkSport, the Foxes have been huge admirers of Potter and the Englishman has been on the club’s radar from his Brighton & Hove Albion days.

Potter’s ratings shot up in 2019 when he took charge of the Seagulls, with his attractive style of football earning admirers around the league.

He was offered his first real test of a job when Chelsea sacked Thomas Tuchel in September 2022, but his stint was anything but straightforward.

In his 22 Premier League games in charge, Potter won just seven times, with Chelsea slipping from sixth to 11th during his reign.

At the moment, the Blues’ hopes for Champions League football solely hinges on them winning the competition but that in itself is an uphill task, as they face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

According to The Mail, there are other big names who are in the frame for the Leicester job. Former Newcastle and Everton manager, Rafa Benitez is among these, while Jesse Marsch, Ralph Hasenhuttl, and Adi Hutter are also considered as contenders.

It was highlighted the long list of EPL managers who were fired so far this season.

Ex-Barca Pique cautions that pressuring Messi to return could be detrimental

Barcelona has been forewarned by Gerard Pique that pressuring Lionel Messi to return to Camp Nou might be “counterproductive.”

Messi, who joined Paris Saint-Germain after being forced to leave Barcelona in 2021 due to a financial crisis, is nearing the end of his two-year contract with the Ligue 1 powerhouse.

The World Cup winner’s future is uncertain because Inter Miami, owned by David Beckham, is eager to entice him to the Major League Soccer, while Barca frequently seem interested in moving for their all-time leading goalscorer.

While PSG head coach Christophe Galtier revealed the club were planning discussions with the 35-year-old, Blaugrana vice-president Rafael Yuste admitted he would “love” to see the forward return to Camp Nou.

Pique, who announced his retirement from football earlier this season, won eight LaLiga titles alongside Messi at Barca, as well as three Champions Leagues and three Club World Cups.

But the former defender insists a potential reunion between his old club and team-mate must happen naturally.

“He knows Yuste and is a wonderful person who will always tell you what you want to hear,” Pique said during an interview with Gerardo Moreno.

“Forcing the situation, however, can be counterproductive. Things have to move naturally. If it has to be done, it will be done. When there is a desire on both sides, an operation in football can always succeed.”

Russia detains woman suspect over killing of pro-Kremlin blogger, Vladlen Tatarsky

In their search for the perpetrators of the bombing that killed pro-war blogger Vladlen Tatarsky in a St. Petersburg cafe, Russian investigators have detained a woman.

Darya Trepova, 26, was earlier added to the interior ministry’s wanted list, and later, the Investigative Committee of Russia confirmed her arrest.

Tatarsky reportedly received a statuette shortly before the explosion, and there is speculation that there may have been a device concealed inside.

Numerous other people suffered injuries, numbering in the dozens.

Videos posted on social media showed an explosion and people wounded on the street.

Russian authorities say they are investigating the attack in the centre of Russia’s second biggest city as a “high-profile murder”.

Russian media reported that Ms Trepova was arrested at anti-war protests in the past.

Russian investigators working at the scene of an explosion at the cafe in St. Petersburg
Image caption,Russian investigators arrived at the scene of the explosion at the St Petersburg cafe

The cafe, Street Food Bar No 1 near the River Neva, was once owned by Yevgeny Prigozhin – who runs Russia’s notorious Wagner mercenary group which has taken part in much of the fighting in Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine.

Prigozhin paid tribute to Tatarsky in a late-night video which he declared was filmed from the town hall in Bakhmut. He displayed a flag which he said had the words “in good memory of Vladlen Tatarsky.”

Tatarsky, a vocal supporter of Russia’s war in Ukraine, was not a Russian official, nor a military officer.

He was a well-known blogger with more than half a million followers and, like Prigozhin, had a criminal past.

He was part of a pro-Kremlin military blogger community that has taken on a relatively high-profile role since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.

Tatarsky is among those who have gone so far as to criticise the Russian authorities, slamming the military and even President Vladimir Putin for setbacks on the battlefield.

The military bloggers have provided information about the war in a country where many have become frustrated with the lack of accurate information from official sources.

Information provided by the Russian military, Kremlin-controlled television and state officials has been criticised for being inaccurate.

Last week, several official Russian sources shared a video allegedly showing Ukrainian troops harassing civilians.

Western analysts proved using open-source information that the video had been staged.

Some pro-Kremlin bloggers also slammed the video as a crude fake. Much of the bloggers’ pro-Russian material is not factual either.

Who was behind Tatarsky’s murder is unclear, but it is reminiscent of the killing of Darya Dugina, a vocal supporter of the war and the daughter of a Russian ultranationalist.

She died in a car bomb attack near Moscow last August.

Russian officials have already hinted that Ukraine is to blame for the explosion. Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak blamed the blast on a Russian “internal political fight”, tweeting: “Spiders are eating each other in a jar.”

The Ukrainians have proved themselves as more than capable of carrying out drone attacks and explosions deep inside Russian territory in recent months.

They rarely admit involvement but often drop hints.

The blast could be linked to political infighting in Russia, as Kyiv has said.

There are now a lot of angry men carrying guns in Russia.

With the military running low on troops convicts have been let out of prison, handed weapons and sent to the front.

Russian authorities have also conducted large-scale recruitment campaigns for volunteer fighters and recruited some 300,000 men in a “partial mobilisation”.

The Kommersant newspaper recently reported that the number of murders committed in Russia last year rose for the first time in 20 years.

Napoli fans fight, light fireworks inside stadium after 4-0 loss to AC Milan

The Serie A league leaders in Italy received a harsh reality check yesterday when AC Milan, the defending champions, defeated them in a 4-0 game at the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona.

High-flying Napoli, who were without their star striker Victor Osimhen, were defeated by two goals from last season’s MVP Rafael Leao and one each from Brahim Diaz and Alexis Saelemaekers.

With the defeat, Luciano Spaletti’s team’s lead over Lazio in second place was cut to 16 points.

At the same time, it moved Milan up to third place, one point ahead of Inter Milan, which suffered a defeat to Fiorentina on Saturday.

According to Italy 24, Napoli ultras protested ahead of the game. Those inside the stadium were ordered to stay silent in protest against club president Aurelio de Laurentiis for rising ticket prices and increased security measures.

Napoli fans brawl inside stadium The fans stuck to their agreement in the earlier stages of the game, but they proved they didn’t deserve one of their demands after a brawl broke out in Curva B during the first half, as reported by Football Italia.

They further pushed against their demands when another fight broke out at half-time. The fans turned their backs and only made insulting chants towards De Laurentiis, but got triggered when some cheered the team.

Their demands were not helped when the situation got worse in the closing stages of the game, with fireworks lighting inside the stadium causing pandemonium and fans running for safety.

It was not the first time Neapolitans caused violence this season. They were barred from attending the away game to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League after causing disruption in the first leg of the encounter.

    Spalletti laments Osimhen’s injury

It was reported that Napoli head coach Luciano Spalletti lamented the absence of Osimhen after the striker picked up a muscle injury during the international break.

Spalletti started young striker Giovanni Simeone, the son of Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone, in place of Osimhen but the Nigerian striker’s impact could not be matched.

The former Lille striker is expected to miss the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie against Milan.

US calls for release of detained journalist, Evan Gershkovich in call with Russia

In a rare phone call with his Russian counterpart, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken requested for the release of a detained Wall Street Journal reporter.

In response, Sergei Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, said that the US shouldn’t try to “make a fuss” or politicise the arrest.

On Friday, Evan Gershkovich was taken into custody on spying-related charges.

The espionage accusation has been vehemently refuted by The Wall Street Journal.

On Sunday, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Mr. Lavrov and Mr. Blinken spoke on the phone about Mr. Gershkovich’s arrest at the US’s request.

A readout of the call released by the US Department of State said that Mr Blinken conveyed “great concern over Russia’s unacceptable detention of a US citizen journalist”.

Mr Lavrov responded by repeating Russia’s claims that Mr Gershkovich was caught “red-handed attempting to obtain classified information” and that his case will be handled by Russian courts, a statement by Russia’s foreign ministry said.

Mr Lavrov also cautioned US officials and media not to fan “hysteria” around the journalist’s arrest.

“It was stressed that it is inadmissible for Washington officials and Western mass media to stir up hysteria with an obvious aim of giving a political overtone to this case,” the ministry said.

The White House has previously condemned Mr Gershkovich’s arrest “in the strongest terms”, and Mr Blinken said he was “deeply concerned” by his detainment.

During the call, Mr Blinken also urged the release of other US citizens detained in Russia, including former US Marine Paul Whelan, who has also been held on espionage charges for over five years.

Mr Gershkovich, 31, is a well-known correspondent in Moscow.

The Wall Street Journal lost all contact with him on Wednesday afternoon, after which it was revealed that he was arrested by Russia’s FSB security service.

The FSB claimed that it had halted “illegal activities” and that the journalist had been detained “acting on US instructions”.

They alleged that Mr Gershkovich had “collected information classified as a state secret about the activities of a Russian defence enterprise”. He was ordered to remain in detention until 29 May.

Espionage in Russia carries a maximum jail term of 20 years.

Mr Gershkovich’s arrest has been strongly condemned by journalists around the world.

In a letter to Russia’s US ambassador Anatoly Antenov, the Committee to Protect Journalists called Mr Gershkovich’s arrest “unwarranted and unjust”, and accused the Russian government of being anti-press.

Potter sacked, some supporters wish granted as they jubilate on social media

After Graham Potter was fired as the club manager, Chelsea supporters expressed their happiness on social media. On Sunday, April 2, just one day after the Blues were humiliated 2-0 by Aston Villa, Potter was fired from Stamford Bridge.

The 2021 Champions League champions have endured a frustrating run of results under the Englishman, and they are almost certainly going to miss out on a top-four spot at the end of the season.

Potter, who took over as manager only in September 2021, has presided over a dismal run of results, with Chelsea managing just 10 victories in their last 28 games.

The woeful run of form saw a section of fans call on the club to sack Potter, with their 2-0 defeat against Villa leaving the club with no choice but to get rid of the former Brighton boss.

“Chelsea FC has announced that Graham Potter has departed the club. Graham has agreed to collaborate with the Club to facilitate a smooth transition,”

Chelsea fans react to Potter’s sacking The news of Potter’s sacking sent fans into a wild meltdown, with many welcoming the drastic move.

One posted: “It’s the right move. He’ll go down in history as Chelsea’s worst-ever manager.”

A second added: “Thank you @ChelseaFC @todd_boehly @Dannythefink and all the others. It was the right thing to do.”

A third continued: “Imperium curse broken. Hard luck Mr Potter, but this was a long time coming.” Another posted: “I’ve waited for this day my whole life.” However, there are those who commiserated with Potter, with one tweeting: “All the very best to Potter, we all are sorry that it didn’t work out….

He needs more time and experience to reach Chelsea level.”

    Potter praises Enzo and Mudryk

As reported earlier Potter praised two January signings, Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk, after their performances against Leicester City. The duo contributed an assist each after costing Chelsea a combined €221m in the winter transfer window contributing to more than 60% of the window’s spending.

Chelsea finally axe manager, Graham Potter amid sack calls

Graham Potter have been fired by Chelsea following a disastrous tenure as manager.

Following Thomas Tuchel’s resignation as manager of the Champions League-winning team in September of last year, Potter, 47, left Brighton to assume control at Stamford Bridge.

However, despite inheriting a star-studded team, the former Seagulls manager was unable to maximise its potential, and a flurry of January signings seemed to make matters worse.

And the Blues have confirmed that Bruno Saltor will take charge as interim head coach following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa, which saw Potter’s side slip into the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said: “On behalf of everyone at the club, we want to thank Graham sincerely for his contribution.

“We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and a person.

“He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome.

“Along with our incredible fans, we will all be getting behind Bruno and the team as we focus on the rest of the season.

“We have 10 Premier League games remaining and a Champions League quarter-final ahead.

“We will put every effort and commitment into every one of those games so that we can end the season on a high.”

Potter, who was hampered by injuries to the likes of N’Golo Kante and Reece James, continued to chop and change his starting line-up as he attempted to find his best XI and impose his philosophy.

But Boehly and Co decided enough was enough after the limp performance against Villa left Chelsea 11th in the league.

The Blues host Liverpool on Tuesday night before heading to Wolves on Saturday.
