‘Destiny makes you go back to where you have to go back’ – Barca veep hints on Messi’s return

Rafael Yuste, the club’s vice president, has noted that Barcelona is in touch with Lionel Messi and would “love” to have him make a long-awaited return to Camp Nou.

After being forced to leave Barcelona in 2021 due to a financial crisis, Messi signed a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain and is now nearing the end of it.

This season, the World Cup winner has tallied 18 goals and added 17 assists, but with PSG losing in the Champions League, questions have been raised about his future in the French capital.

While David Beckham-owned Inter Miami are keen to take Messi to MLS, Barcelona have often been linked with a move for their all-time leading goalscorer, and Yuste refused to rule out a reunion on Friday.

“Of course we are in contact with Messi,” Yuste said on Friday. “Leo and his family know the affection I have for him, that we have them.

“I participated in the negotiations that did not come to fruition two years ago. I have that thorn stuck in me, and if we talk about La Masia, we talk about Leo.

“I would love for him to come back and I think the fans would too, because beautiful stories in life have to have a happy ending.

“We are in love with Messi and I think Messi is in love with Barca and the city of Barcelona.”

Any potential return for Messi may be dependent on Barca’s ability to cut their wage bill, with LaLiga president Javier Tebas claiming they must save €200million to meet the competition’s regulations for next season.

If the required savings can be made, Yuste believes a move for Messi is possible, adding: “Mateu [Alemany] and Jordi [Cruyff] have to present the viability and income plan to Tebas in two months.

“If all the conditions are given, we would explore that possibility. The president [Joan Laporta] was with Leo’s father recently and there is a good relationship.

“Of course, there is no attack plan because I do not want PSG to take it as that. If this happens, it will happen because destiny makes you go back to where you have to go back.

“If we could put all the conditions together and return Leo to Barcelona, it would be the perfect ending to a very happy story.”

Argentina star, Nicolas Otamendi tattoes Messi on his body as many rush for tattoos of their captain

Argentina defender, Nicolas Otamendi has unveiled a stunning tattoo dedicated to Lionel Messi. Otamendi paid special thanks to his captain, whose seven goals inspired La Albiceleste to a third World Cup triumph in Qatar last December.

The celebrations following that victory in the Middle East have continued for several months, with unflappable centre-half, Otamendi the most recent to receive a permanent memento of what Messi accomplished.

Otamendi gets Messi-inspired tattoo Otamendi’s amazing tattoo was unveiled in a heartfelt video shared on social media, per GOAL.

The clip showcases the full production process, which was accompanied by one of Argentina’s most famous World Cup anthems.

The design of the tattoo features Messi holding and kissing the World Cup trophy after Argentina defeated France in the tournament final in Qatar.

His tattoo also features images of the Finalissima and the Copa America trophies, the other two that Argentina has won recently.

    Otamendi receives Messi-inspired tattoo

In an interview, the 35-year-old defender revealed he had developed a love for tattoos as a teenager. “People always ask me about them.

I had my first done when I was 14, and each one has some significance to it” he said, as quoted by bodyartguru.

    Fans rush for Messi tattoo

In a related article, Sports Brief also reported on Argentina fans lining up in Buenos Aires to get tattoos of their champion captain, Messi and the World Cup trophy the nation won.

According to tattoo artist, Esteban Vucinovich, the trophy is most requested for skin art, followed by Messi and Emiliano Martinez, La Albiceleste’s game-winning goalkeeper.

The body art of Argentine athletes like Angel Di Maria, who most recently wore a World Cup tattoo on his right thigh, have inspired a lot of followers to get tattoos of their own.

  • ‘Erling is recovering’, let’s see how it goes – Pep hopeful of Haaland’s return ahead of City-Lipool

‘Erling is recovering’, let’s see how it goes – Pep hopeful of Haaland’s return ahead of City-Lipool

Erling Haaland is still recovering from a groyne injury, and according to Pep Guardiola, a decision will be made about his readiness for this weekend later on Friday.

Haaland has had a sensational debut campaign with Manchester City, tallying 42 goals across all competitions, easily the most of any player in Europe’s top five leagues.

However, an injury that prevented the forward from joining up with Norway set him back going into the international break.

Despite Guardiola’s desire to take his time with that decision, City is hopeful that Haaland will be available for Saturday’s crucial match against Liverpool.

“Erling is recovering,” the manager said. “We have the last training session and we will see how he feels.”

Guardiola, who added Phil Foden would be out for “two or three weeks” following appendix surgery, was asked if he would risk Haaland if he was not convinced he was fully fit.

The City boss was happy to trust the 22-year-old’s judgement, but he is also confident his side would cope without their superstar striker.

In the Premier League, Haaland has scored 28 goals, making up 42 per cent of City’s total this term and earning 20 points. All three are high marks for a City player in a single season.

“The doctors and especially the players will decide,” Guardiola said. “How does he feel? Yesterday I spoke with him and he feels good. But we will see, we will see what happens.

“We have scored a lot of goals this season, and he’s scored an incredible amount of goals, but in the past we also scored a lot of goals.

“Since we were here, and with Roberto Mancini and [Manuel] Pellegrini, always Man City was a team that scored a lot of goals in the season – with different players, different strikers.

“They scored a lot of goals, which is what we will try to do until the end of the season.”

City have scored the second-most goals across Europe in all competitions this season, with their 109 trailing Bayern Munich’s 112. They are the only two teams to reach three figures.

  • Xavi says ‘it is time to focus’, not the time to talk about Messi’s return to Barcelona

Xavi says ‘it is time to focus’, not the time to talk about Messi’s return to Barcelona

As Barcelona inches closer to winning LaLiga, Xavi argued that now is not the time to discuss a potential reconciliation with Lionel Messi.

Barcelona currently holds a commanding 12-point lead in La Liga and a 1-0 lead over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey semifinal.

The club has already won the Supercopa de Espana, its first trophy since Messi left the team in 2021.

The possibility of a treble still exists for Xavi’s team, but with Messi entering the final stages of his PSG contract, there is an increasing demand for the World Cup champion of Argentina to return to Camp Nou.

Despite his understandable desire to bring his former teammate back to Barcelona, Xavi is more concerned with upcoming games than potential transfer activity.

“I think this is not the time to talk about Messi’s return. I talk to Leo often, I have a friendship, but this is not the time,” he told reporters ahead of facing Elche.

“Neither for his sake nor for that of the club. It is a subject that is being discussed, I have a lot of contact with him.

“Hopefully, we can see him again here, I would be the first one who would be made happy. He is the best player in history, but boy, it’s not the time.

“We are a month away from winning two titles, and it’s time to focus.

“It doesn’t depend on me, it depends much more on what Leo wants to do. He’s done everything in football, he’s won everything; it depends on his happiness.

“I have a great relationship with him, and if he has the decision that he wants to come back, we will listen to him and be delighted.

“We’re going to listen to fate. Let’s see what happens, there’s nothing yet. Let’s see the will he has.

“We do a disservice to Leo, the team, the club. We are one step away from achieving success in the post-Messi era that scared us so much. This is success.”

Pressed further on Messi and next season, Xavi again sought to shift the focus towards the push for further silverware in this campaign.

“We haven’t talked about next year with the board,” he said. “We are one step away from winning titles and you talk to me about signings next year. You are specialists in changing the subject.

“On Wednesday, we can go to the Copa final. Everything is to be won.

“Sometimes I do not understand you [the media]. All year round, the talk is to win titles, and now that we are one step away, we talk about players for next season. Let’s focus on Elche.”

  • Roma star, Tammy Abraham is fueling Premier League rumours

Roma star, Tammy Abraham is fueling Premier League rumours

Under former owner Roman Abramovich, Chelsea had a reputation for making extravagant transfer purchases.

In his first two windows as a new co-owner, Todd Boehly developed the same habit, spending about £600 million.

The club boasts one of the best academies in the world, but its players were perpetually frustrated by being loaned out; this situation briefly stopped when the Blues were slapped with a transfer ban in the 2019–20 season.

Club legend Frank Lampard returned to the team as manager and filled the voids with players from the club’s academy.

He made debuts for eight graduates, including Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount, and Reece James.

Lampard left midway through the second season and was replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

Abraham then left for AS Roma due to a lack of playing time for £34 million, as reported by BBC Sports.

    Abraham hints at EPL return

In his first season in Rome, Abraham scored 19 goals and provided five assists in all competitions, helping Jose Mourinho’s side win the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League.

He has since grown frustrated due to a lack of playing time and increased competition by the presences of Paulo Dybala, Andrea Belotti, and Eduardo Bove.

According to Sky Italia, Manchester United and Aston Villa are interested in bringing Abraham back to England, with Chelsea also considering activating his €80 mil release clause.

His recent interview suggests he could be open to a return to English football.

“In football, never say never. Right now, my goal and my attention is on Roma: we want to finish the season well.

I haven’t even started thinking about anything other than just being here and doing my best,” he told FourFourTwo, as quoted by Football Italia.

“I wouldn’t say there are any loose ends in England; I’m in no rush. Maybe I’ll stay at Roma for the next ten years, or maybe not.

You never know what’s around the corner,” he added.

    Arsenal interested in Abraham

Sports Brief also reported that Arsenal are interested in bringing Abraham back to England and could make a move this summer for the London-born striker. Roma will demand a fee of €80 mil and interested clubs would have to contend with Chelsea, who have a clause that would be active by the end of the season.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo: Carlo Ancelotti is the reason why CR7 could not make his Real Madrid return

Cristiano Ronaldo: Carlo Ancelotti is the reason why CR7 could not make his Real Madrid return

Apparently, Carlo Ancelotti is the reason Cristiano Ronaldo turned down the opportunity to make a deal with Real Madrid.

Ronaldo quit Manchester United in January to join Al-Nassr after a contentious interview with Piers Morgan in which he disparaged various aspects of Manchester United.

The 38-year-old was thinking about returning to the Santiago Bernabeu, where he amassed 450 goals in 438 games to break the club goal scoring record.

Ronaldo’s desired return to Spain, however, did not occur because Ancelotti preferred to stick with Karim Benzema as his lone striker, according to Spanish newspaper El Nacional.

Considering the strong relationship the five-time Ballon d’Or winner had with the Italian manager between 2013 and 2015, the Portuguese considered it a betrayal, according to the report.

Ronaldo went on to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr as a free agent and has since scored nine goals and provided two assists in 10 matches for the club.

    Perez says no to Ronaldo

Meanwhile, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez also ruled out a move to sign Ronaldo.

When asked by fans if he plans to make a bid for the legendary forward, whose contract was ripped apart at Old Trafford, Perez replied: “Sign Cristiano? Again? He’s 38 years old”, getting the age of the striker wrong.

    Ronaldo’s sister slams Perez

Sports Brief also reported that Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister has slammed Real Madrid president Florentino Perez for laughing at the possibility of bringing him back to the Santiago Bernabeu.

After the UEFA Super Cup game between Real Madrid and Frankfurt in Helsinki, Perez was asked by a fan about a potential return for the 37-year-old.

  • Referee who clashed with AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho is relegated to Serie B

Referee who clashed with AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho is relegated to Serie B

When Jose Mourinho was dismissed for the third time this season during a Serie A match against Cremonese on February 28, it made headlines.

Mourinho frequently makes headlines, but this time he was enraged at fourth official Marco Serra, whom he charged with being biassed against AS Roma’s upcoming opponents.

Serra is a native of Turin, and Roma was to play Juventus right after. Mourinho was later given a two-game suspension, but he was still eligible for a match against Juventus.

With regard to Serra, The Special One had vowed to use the legal system.

    Serra to officiate Serie B

In a new interesting development, Serra has now been demoted to Serie B, with the 40-year-old now set to officiate the upcoming match between Venezia and Como.

Romapress reports that it is unknown whether he will be officiating in the second tier henceforth or if it is just a temporary measure.

It is also unknown whether his clash with Mourinho had anything to do with his perceived demotion.

The Special One has never been shy to square up with referees and before the Cremonese red card, he had already been sent off in games against Atalanta and Torino.

Roma resume their push for Champions League football this weekend with a home game against Sampdoria.

    Mourinho’s contract situation

Sports Brief previously reported that in his first season in charge, Mourinho won the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League with Roma, having finished seventh in Serie A the season before.

The Special One is approaching the final year of his deal in Rome and is still courting interest from top European clubs, including Chelsea and Real Madrid, as well as the Brazilian national team.

Mourinho has received limited backing from the Roma hierarchy in the transfer market, spending only €9 million despite winning a trophy and qualifying for Europa League in his first season.

Peter Okoye of the P-Square music group, one of the best-known Nigerian musicians, has explained that he has been able to convince Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen to join Chelsea.

Numerous clubs in the Premier League and France are keeping an eye on Osimhen, who has been in outstanding form this season for Napoli in all competitions.

Osimhen travelled to Lagos to visit his family and friends after participating in two matches for the Super Eagles against Guinea-Bissau in the African Cup of Nations qualifying round.

Okoye shared a video on his official Instagram page, where he was seen sitting down and having a good time with Osimhen.

Okoye wants Osimhen at Chelsea In the comment session, a fan asked Okoye if he was able to speak to Osimhen on speculation about him moving to the Premier League, and the singer said he has convinced him to join Chelsea.

Peter Okoye’s statement ”I was able to convince Osimhen to come to Chelsea.” Meanwhile, Chelsea are expected to make their bid for Osimhen at the end of the ongoing League season.

    Aubameyang wants Barcelona return

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is reportedly tired of sitting on the bench at Premier League side Chelsea and wants to lower his salary so as for him to make a return to La Liga giants Barcelona.

Last summer, Chelsea paid Barcelona the sum of £10 million for the signature of Aubameyang with the hopes that the Gabonese striker would help them score goals.

But since the arrival of the former Arsenal captain at Stamford Bridge, he has been struggling and has even managed to net three goals in 18 appearances this term in all competitions.

  • Ghana’s president modifies country’s stance on harsh anti-LGBTQ bill as Kamala Harris visits

Ghana’s president modifies country’s stance on harsh anti-LGBTQ bill as Kamala Harris visits

In light of Kamala Harris’ visit, Ghana’s president modifies the nation’s position on a harsh anti-LGBTQ law.

President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana stated that after his administration’s intervention, “substantial elements” of a harsh anti-LGBTQ bill that the country’s parliament was considering “have been modified.”

The announcement was made by Akufo-Addo and US Vice-President Kamala Harris on Monday during a press conference held in conjunction with Harris’ visit to the country of West Africa.

He emphasised that the proposed legislation, disguised as a “family values” bill, was actually a private member’s bill that sought to enact some of the harshest anti-LGBTQ laws on the African continent. In August 2021, the bill made its initial appearance in the legislature.

“The bill is going through the parliament. The attorney general has found it necessary to speak to the committee (the constitutional and legal committee of parliament) about it regarding the constitutionality … of several of its provisions. The parliament is dealing with it. At the end of the process, I will come in,” the Ghanaian leader said.

After parliamentary deliberations, a final bill will be sent to the president for assent.

“My understanding … is that substantial elements of the bill have already been modified as a result of the intervention of the attorney general,” Akufo-Addo said.

    Ad Feedback

In suggesting that the bill may end up being watered down in the amendment process, Akufo-Addo added that he was convinced the parliament will consider the sensitivity of the bill to human rights issues as well as the feelings of the Ghanaian population “and come out with a responsible response.”

Anti-gay bill still “rigid and tough”

However, one of the parliamentarians who introduced the bill, Samuel Nartey George, insists that the proposed law remains “rigid and tough.”

“The bill has not been substantially changed. The bill remains as tough and as rigid as it was,” George told local media in a televised interview.

He added: “When the bill is laid before the House (of parliament), you will realize that the focus of the bill which has to do with voiding (gay) marriages, preventing them from adopting or fostering children, the clampdown on platforms and media houses that are going to do promotion and advocacy or push those materials still remain enforced.”

George also implied that restrictions against “expressions, be it lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender are all still there. “So when he (Akufo-Addo) says the bill has been watered down, he doesn’t know what he is talking about.”

The proposed aw would see LGBTQ Ghanaians face jail time, or be forced into so-called “conversion therapy” – a widely discredited practice debunked by much of the international medical and psychiatric communities.

Under the bill, advocates of the LGBTQ community would face up to a decade in prison; public displays of same-sex affection or cross-dressing could lead to a fine or jail time, and certain types of medical support would be made illegal.

The new law would also make the distribution of material deemed pro-LGBTQ by news organizations or websites illegal. It calls on Ghanaians to report those they suspect of being from the LGBTQ community.

Harris, the US vice-president, said at the press conference she felt very strongly about supporting the freedom and equality of the LGBTQ community.

“This is an issue that we consider to be a human rights issue, and that will not change,” she said.

    Ghana not pressured

Ghana’s information minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, also told CNN on Tuesday that the outcome of the parliamentary debate on the bill may differ from its original provisions.

“The bill is now in an enactment process. What will come out in enactment when 275 members get on the floor and start dealing with it clause by clause and voting clause by clause, may end up being different from what was proposed. You propose a bill and parliament … can tweak it and make it harsher or less harsh … it is in the hands of parliament now,” Nkrumah said.

The minister also insisted however that the Ghanaian government was not under pressure to relax existing legislation on homosexuality.

“We are not pressured in any way to focus on things that are not essentially within our main priorities. Our priority number one is getting the Ghanaian economy on track and that’s what we’re focused on.”

“This conversation is not part of our mainstream conversation here in Ghana,” he added.

Old sodomy laws dating back to 1960 remain on the statute books in Ghana but they are rarely enforced.

Activist Danny Bediako, who runs the NGO Rightify Ghana, told CNN that living in Ghana would become tougher for the LGBTQ community if the bill passes in parliament.

“It’s going to make it difficult for the (LGBTQ) community to exist. They are just trying to erase the community through this bill, so it will definitely lead to an increase in attacks,” said Bediako, who added that his organization had documented 27 cases of violent attacks targeted toward the LGBTQ community in the country this year.

“There have been different types of cases, but the most dominant one is the activities of violent groups and they are widespread. So if this bill is passed, these activities are going to continue and it’s only going to also get worse.”

Arteta says he copied Guardiola’s tactics in Zinchenko’s deployment

As the competition between Arsenal and Manchester City for the title in May heats up, the Premier League title race is down to the final 10 games.

The second leg of their matchup will take place at the Etihad Stadium on April 26.

The Gunners are eight points ahead of City, who have a game in hand.

At the Emirates Stadium, City prevailed 3-1 in the first leg.

Since Mikel Arteta served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant in Manchester for three years before leaving to take over at his old club, there is a unique connection between this year’s title race and Arteta.

Arteta received some assistance from his former coaching staff when he signed Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus and Ukrainian star Oleksandr Zinchenko for a combined £82 million in the summer, as reported by Caught Offside.

    Arteta is copying Guardiola’s tactics

Jesus and Zinchenko have been pivotal for Arsenal.

While many fans have slammed Guardiola for selling them to a rival, Arteta revealed he has taken more from his former boss than two important players.

Zinchenko is a versatile player who can play as a full-back, midfielder, or winger.

Arteta has exploited this advantage at Arsenal by using him as a floating full-back in a move traced back to his compatriot.

“It started when I was in Barcelona; we used to play a 3-4-3 diamond and one of the full-backs used to play there.

But Pep did it at Bayern for the first time with Phillip Lahm and then that was developed at City with many different ways of doing it with different players,” Arteta told Mirror UK.

”So that is the great thing, that you can take all the time things from other sports, other coaches to make yourself better and that curiosity is necessary to evolve and be better,” he added.

    De Bruyne’s message to Guardiola

Speaking of Guardiola, there are reports of dressing room rifts between him and some players including João Cancelo, who departed to Bayern on loan in January.

Sports Brief reported on Kevin De Bruyne sending a message to Guardiola to express his dissatisfaction over the reduced playing time given to him this season.

While KDB said he will do his best when called on, his manager believes the Belgium captain must return to the basics to regain his position on the first team.

Kai Havertz says N’Golo Kante has used same phone for a decade, recounting Kante’s humble lifestyle

Chelsea’s star Kai Havertz has given new information about N’Golo Kante’s modest way of life. Due to his simple lifestyle, Kante is regarded as the nicest and most modest footballer in the entire world.

The French midfielder is living a low-key life, which contrasts sharply with that of the majority of football players competing at the highest level, despite collecting enormous sums of money in wages and sponsorship deals.

It’s believed that the former Leicester City star is using a Mini Cooper, which he purchased for a pitiful £20,000.

During his time with Leicester City, Kante reportedly preferred to run to practise rather than drive.

Kante has not changed a phone

Havertz has now shared a fresh insight into Kante’s humble lifestyle, which further cements the midfielder’s place as one of the modest footballers of modern history.

Havertz recently disclosed that the France international has not upgraded his phone for a decade.

Speaking to The Guardian, the German star insisted that Kante has no interest in material possessions such as flashy cars and fashion. “I’ve met different characters.

Toni Kroos is one: calm, down to earth, doesn’t care about flashy stuff. He knows life is not only football,” Havertz said. “N’Golo Kante is another.

He’s had the same phone for 10 years, doesn’t care about cars, doesn’t care about clothes. “You cannot judge people because of [spending]. If that makes them happy, I don’t care. Maybe in their heart they are also good people, they just want to act cool,” he added.

    Kante promises knee-slide celebration

It was reported that Kante promised his teammates a knee-slide celebration when he scores his next goal after his injury return. Teammates Christian Pulisic, Ben Chilwell and Mykhailo Mudryk accosted the tireless midfielder in training and asked that he should do something different, particularly with his goal celebration.

Check out Cristiano Ronaldo and girlfriend in brand new $9 million worth Bugatti Centodieci in Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo and his girlfriend, Georgina Rodriguez, were spotted leaving a restaurant in Madrid in their brand-new Bugatti Centodiecci on Tuesday night.

The Al-Nassr superstar had a fruitful international break with Portugal, notching four goals across two Euro 2024 qualification matches coupled with a unique celebration style.

Aside from his goal-scoring heroics for the Selecao, the veteran forward also became the most-capped men’s player in international football, surpassing Bader Al-Mutawa’s previous world record of 196 outings for Kuwait.

He will be expected to resume training with Al-Nassr as they prepare to face Al-Adalah in the Saudi Pro League on April 4.

Before he touched down in the gulf region, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner enjoyed some downtime with Georgina at a restaurant in Madrid, Spain.

In a video making the rounds on the internet, Cristiano was seen trying to make his way from a crowd of enthusiastic fans into his supercar, which he carefully drove away from the teeming group before stepping on the accelerator to steer clear of sight.

    What is Bugatti Centodieci?

To celebrate its 110th anniversary, the French carmaker, Bugatti, unveiled Centodiecci, a limited edition vehicle.

According to reports, the company only produced ten units, each costing over $8.5 million, per Firstsportz.

What does Ronaldo’s Centodieci look like?

According to TSB, Ronaldo chose a supercar with standard specifications, a white exterior, and Centodieci-specific wheels.

Instead of the blue theme found on the launch standard, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward chose red leather for the interior.

    Ronaldo debuts new celebration

As earlier reported, Cristiano Ronaldo debuted a new goal celebration after scoring for Portugal against Luxembourg on Sunday night.

The 38-year-old was in a good mood after scoring the game’s first goal for Robert Martinez’s team within nine minutes of action against the European minnows.

The first goal scored by the Al-Nassr superstar drew the attention of spectators at Stade de Luxembourg.

  • Sadio Mane allegedly had a furious dressing room scuffle with manager, Julian Nagelsmann

Sadio Mane allegedly had a furious dressing room scuffle with manager, Julian Nagelsmann

More information about what transpired is spreading after Bayern Munich fired Julian Nagelsmann. Unexpectedly, the German manager was fired by the team, and Thomas Tuchel, a former Chelsea manager, took his place.

    What happened between the two?

The supposed ‘bust-up’ is said to have occurred after the second-leg Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

The publication reported that the former Liverpool forward was unhappy that Nagelsmann only brought him on late in the game against the French side.

Mane was brought on in the 82nd minute of the game, which Bayern won 2-0. He even scored a late goal but it was chalked off because he was deemed offside.

The article further stated that Nagelsmann seemed intimidated as the attacker confronted him in the dressing room over his lack of game time.

Mane has only recently returned from an injury which kept him out of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

    Liverpool fans remain doubtful

With the news currently making headlines, it is the Liverpool fans who remain the most skeptical about the reports, Liverpool Echo reported.

Many were surprised by the news, calling it quite uncharacteristic of the Senegalese star.

With Mane developing a reputation for being one of the nicest guys at Liverpool, fans of the Anfield club couldn’t believe he would now be involved in altercations with a manager.

    Mane wants to prove himself

Sports Brief also reported that Mane wants to prove himself to the newly appointed Bayern Munich boss, Tuchel.

The Senegalese star has battled for form and consistency since his move from Liverpool at the end of last season.

With a new manager now in charge, Mane wants to prove to the club they didn’t make a mistake in signing him on.

  • Jurgen Klopp and I had a couple of pints and smokes together ahead of Champions League Final – Gerrard

Jurgen Klopp and I had a couple of pints and smokes together ahead of Champions League Final – Gerrard

Since Jurgen Klopp took over the club’s management in 2015, Liverpool has advanced to three UEFA Champions League finals, lost two, and won the 2019 edition. Real Madrid, the 14-time champion, has been Klopp’s worst nightmare in this competition, having twice denied the German in the final in 2018 and 2022.

Liverpool has also been eliminated from this year’s competition by Los Blancos.

Last season, the club was managed by a former Borussia Dortmund manager, who guided them to the final of every competition they took part in, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup while losing to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

However, days before the night in Paris, Klopp was caught up in a bar mood with former Reds captain Steven Gerrard who was still Aston Villa manager at that time, as reported by Sun UK.

    Klopp met Gerrard at bar

Gerrard and Klopp met at a bar in Merseyside while the manager was walking his dog and decided to stay and spend some time with the former Rangers boss. “He was walking the dog, I was sitting outside with one of my friends having a couple of pints.

I shouted over to wish him good luck, because he had a Champions League final days later. I thought he’d be in the zone,” he told The Anfield Wrap. “He said to me: ‘No, no, no. Go to the bar and get me a pint.’ So we got him a pint.

He ended up having two or three, he had a couple of smokes, his dog waited patiently, and we had a good craic for probably over an hour about football, about life in Liverpool, his plans for the future.”

Klopp could be friendly and could also get angry. He blasted a pitch invader who nearly injured left- back Andy Robertson during Liverpool’s 7-0 rout of Manchester United, as reported earlier.

The fan evaded security and collided with the Scottish defender, who sat down a few seconds with what looked like he had been injured but could carry on.

  • Lionel Messi seems to want a stay at PSG, but do the Parisians want him to?

Lionel Messi seems to want a stay at PSG, but do the Parisians want him to?

The Ligue 1 club is reportedly reluctant to renew the Argentine’s contract after this season, so Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain appear destined to part ways at the end of the campaign.

Messi signed a two-year contract with PSG in 2021 when he transferred from Barcelona, but his time in Paris has fallen short of expectations after two consecutive losses in the UEFA Champions League.

Sportskeeda reports that PSG believes Messi’s attack-partnership with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar has harmed the team’s balance, and the club is now looking for a change.

The Parisians are said to want to build a project centred on Mbappe, whose contract expires in June 2024, because he is their most consistent performer.

Messi is currently the only member of the trio who can make way this summer, as Neymar is keen to remain with the club at least until June 2025 when his PSG contract expires.

    ‘Messi should stay at PSG’

Meanwhile, Messi has been advised by Argentina legend, Mario Kempes to remain at PSG to boost his chances of playing at the 2026 World Cup, Goal reports.

Kempes believes remaining in France would leave the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner better prepared to help Argentina defend their title at the next tournament. Messi’s current contract with PSG is set to expire at the end of the season and the Argentine is yet to pen a new deal with the Parisians, despite an offer reportedly being placed on the table by the Ligue 1 giants.

    Messi wants European stay extended

In related coverage, Sports Brief reported on Messi being keen to remain in Europe next season as he chases another Ballon d’Or title.

The veteran Argentine has won the prestigious award a record seven times and is looking to extend that record with another win.

The Paris Saint-Germain star is one of the favourites to win the award given his success with his country at the 2022 World Cup.

  • Rashford dismisses as ‘nonsense’ rumours that he wants £500k per week from Man Utd

Rashford dismisses as ‘nonsense’ rumours that he wants £500k per week from Man Utd

Marcus Rashford has called as “nonsense” claims that he is holding out for a massive £500,000-per-week contract to remain at Manchester United.

The contract of the England international, who has a career-high 27 goals in 44 games this season, is set to expire at Old Trafford at the end of the following campaign.

The Daily Star, a British publication, claims that Rashford’s future at United is uncertain because of the club’s ongoing sale and his high salary demands.

On his personal Twitter page on Wednesday, the 25-year-old, however, directly addressed the article and refuted it.

“Just before this one starts to do the rounds! It’s complete nonsense,” he posted. “The club and make self [sic] have been respectful to one another, and that’s how it will remain.

“My focus is purely on finishing as well as possible in the league and winning trophies.”

Rashford added on Instagram: “Another non-story flying around about my advisors and me making demands. It’s complete nonsense!

“My aim and the club’s aims are to finish as high as possible in the league and to try and win a cup or two.”

Rashford’s goals tally this season has been bettered only by Kylian Mbappe (31) and Erling Haaland (42) among players across Europe’s top five leagues.

He has spent eight seasons as part of United’s first team since making his big breakthrough with two goals on his debut against Midtjylland in February 2016 as an 18-year-old.

Speaking last month, United manager Erik ten Hag confirmed the club are working on tying down the academy product to fresh terms.

“Of course [Rashford’s new contract] is a priority,” he said. “We are working on that. Just sit and wait. In the background. we are working hard.”

Rashford missed England’s two Euro 2024 qualifiers during the international window, but he is expected to be fit to feature against Newcastle United on Sunday.

  • Bayern Munich is always the top choice to defeat Borussia Dortmund – Goretzka

Bayern Munich is always the top choice to defeat Borussia Dortmund – Goretzka

Bayern Munich will always be the favourite to defeat Borussia Dortmund, according to Leon Goretzka, because no team can compete with Die Roten at the Allianz Arena and come out on top.

The two teams square off in their first game following the international break in a game that could be crucial to this season’s Bundesliga title race.

After taking over for Julian Nagelsmann last week, Thomas Tuchel, a former captain of the Black and Yellow, Dortmund now has a one-point advantage over their rivals.

According to Goretzka, who was speaking ahead of the crucial game, the visitors’ advantage in the league standing means nothing when they travel to the Allianz Arena.

“We are ready,” he told SportBILD. “We want the 11th championship in a row. To quote Kylian Mbappe, we are always favourites.

“When we play at home, there isn’t a team we don’t go into the game against as favourites. I think [the pressure] is great.

“I really enjoy these games. As a player, you don’t want to be part of the team that can break this series [and miss out on another title win].”

Nagelsmann’s departure, despite guiding Bayern to the title last term and the Champions League quarter-finals this year, is a gamble for the Bavarian giants.

But in Tuchel, they have a former Champions League-winning coach from his time at Chelsea, and Goretzka hopes he can help retain their Bundesliga crown.

“We all know and appreciate his successes,” he added. “[We] have great respect for his achievements and experience.”

  • Enrique wants a job in the Premier League, but a move to Spurs is unlikely

Enrique wants a job in the Premier League, but a move to Spurs is unlikely

Luis Enrique, a former coach for Spain and Barcelona, wants to work in England but appears to have ruled out taking over for Antonio Conte at Tottenham.

After La Roja was eliminated by Morocco in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, Enrique cut ties with Spain.

Luis de la Fuente, who was promoted from the Under-21s, took his place, leaving Enrique back on the market.

Since then, there have been numerous references to high-profile positions, but Spurs, who fired Conte on Sunday after a week of persistent rumours that his time with the team was up, are the team he seems to have been most associated with.

During his first significant interview of the year, Enrique was not specifically asked about the Spurs, but he did express a desire to  work in the Premier League.

But the fact he does not expect to be working in England even as early as July suggests the Spurs job would be a non-starter.

“I would like to go to England to work,” he told Radio SER Gijon.

“But I don’t see myself in the Premier League in July because I would like to go to a team there that can do important things, and that is very difficult.

“I would not go to [just] any Premier League team.”

The 52-year-old has also been among the big names linked with the Brazil job, which Tite vacated following the Selecao’s unsuccessful Qatar 2022 campaign.

The coach confirmed he has received offers from national teams — Brazil not being one of them — but he seems less interested in returning to the international stage as things stand.

“I don’t see myself coaching Brazil,” he continued. “Another coach profile fits in there better than mine.

“They haven’t called me. I don’t know if my style fits the best with Brazil.

“I have had offers from national teams, but not from clubs. It would have to be a very important [national] team to take it, although it would be very difficult for me to face Spain. I don’t know if I would be ready.”

  • Kudus is the reason why Ajax fans buy ticket – Ajax coach

Kudus is the reason why Ajax fans buy ticket – Ajax coach

Ajax head coach, John Heitinga, has described Mohammed Kudus as a player that will always have fans paying to watch him play.

The Ghana international has been instrumental for club and country this season and overcame an early season struggle for game time to become one of Ajax’s first names on the team sheet.

In the 2022/23 season, the 22-year-old has been directly involved in 25 goals across all competitions for club and country, scoring 20 times and providing five assists.

Since returning from the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Kudus has scored seven goals under Heitinga, who believes the player is one that everyone enjoys watching.

“Mohammed Kudus is a player that fans buy a ticket for.

He is the player who entertains the fans. He is a proud human being and someone that wants to get the most out of his career,” he told the Ajax media team.

Kudus failed to add to his tally during the international break where he featured in the Black Stars’ doubleheader against Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, with the club football returning this weekend, the attacking midfielder will be seeking a return to the scoresheet.

  • Wenger is Premier League’s most influential manager – Mikel Arteta

Wenger is Premier League’s most influential manager – Mikel Arteta

After the former Arsenal manager was inducted into the competition’s Hall of Fame, Mikel Arteta referred to him as the most influential manager in Premier League history.

After 16 players had already been added, Wenger and Alex Ferguson were inducted on Wednesday, making them the first managers to enter the Hall of Fame.

During his lengthy tenure as Arsenal’s manager, Wenger led the team to three Premier League championships, including the 2003–04 “Invincibles,” and seven FA Cup victories.

His revolutionary football philosophy, which included a dedication to playing attacking football, is well known.

“I don’t think any other managers have had a more impact,” Arteta said.

“Some managers have brought different ideas, different characters, different competitions.

“He opened the Premier League to the world in a different way to other managers. He had a vision that was much wider than any other manager had at the time.

“England and the Premier League have to be very grateful forever to this man.”

Arteta played under Wenger for five seasons between 2011 and 2016, before becoming Arsenal boss himself in 2019.

After winning the 2020 FA Cup, Arteta has the Gunners leading the Premier League by eight points with 10 games to go.

On track for Arsenal’s first title in 19 years, Arteta has credited Wenger for helping him as a player and then in the next step of his career.

“I had a dream to play for this club and that was because of the way Arsenal played,” added Arteta.

“It was so attractive. I had a phenomenal time with him. He pushed me as well at the end of my career to become a coach.

“We had a conversation and I asked him what he would do in my position because I had doubts in my career over whether I wanted to continue my journey as a coach.

“He helped me at the club and at the academy to do my badges and again, he was an inspiration.”

  • FIFA extends Tottenham managing director of football, Fabio Paratici’s ban

FIFA extends Tottenham managing director of football, Fabio Paratici’s ban

In January, Paratici received a 30-month suspension from participating in Italian Football Federation activities as part of an investigation into alleged financial mismanagement at Juventus, which resulted in the suspension of 11 other officials and a 15-point deduction for the team.

FIFA has extended Fabio Paratici’s suspension to include all of his football-related activities.

As a result of an investigation into alleged financial mismanagement at Juventus, which resulted in the suspension of 11 other officials and a 15-point deduction for the team, he was given a 30-month ban from participating in activities within the Italian Football Federation in January.

The Italian FA requested that these bans be extended globally, and FIFA confirmed to Sky Sports News that it granted this request, meaning that Paratici is now prohibited from participating in any football-related activities worldwide.

They said in a statement: “FIFA have confirmed that – following a request by the Italian FA (FIGC) – the Chairperson of FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to extend the sanctions imposed by FIGC on several football officials to have worldwide effect.”

Sky Sports News has contacted Tottenham and the Football Association for further guidance on what this means for Paratici and his role at Spurs.

Sky Sports News understands Paratici cannot conduct any transfer market activity directly – he cannot talk to agents nor negotiate deals, which is a fundamental part of his job as managing director of football – but he can work internally at Spurs, including attending meetings.

However, Sky Sports News are awaiting for official clarification of this – such as whether he can be involved in Tottenham’s search for a new permanent manager following the departure of Antonio Conte.

Paratici, Juventus and the other officials involved have appealed the sanctions – with the result of the appeal expected later in April, potentially 19.

The ban is in effect even while this appeal to CONI (Italian Olympic committee) is going on.

Image:Paratici cannot conduct any transfer market activity directly

Paratici and 11 other former Juventus officials may also face a separate criminal case – with a preliminary hearing, due to take place yesterday, was postponed until May 10.

Juventus, and the 12 officials – including Paratici – deny any wrongdoing.

On Tuesday, in an extended interview on the club’s official website, Paratici described Conte’s exit as “the right decision” and called on everyone at the club to focus on a successful end to the season.

Fan group the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust on Wednesday afternoon called for clarity and reassurance from the club.

Responding to the Paratici ban, it tweeted: “This news adds further to the extremely concerning situation at the club. No manager, no director of football and uncertainty around our star player and our end of season finish.

“Fans deserve to hear a clear statement of strategy from THFC so they can be reassured by the board on their plan to bring success and stability to the club.”

The forward Heung-min Son said he was saddened by Conte’s departure and feels responsible.

“As a player, I am really sorry,” he said. “He’s a world-class coach, and we had a great journey together. I should have played better. I feel responsible for his departure, because I haven’t helped the club all that much.”

Manchester police investigating ‘goal machine’ Erling Haaland

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are aware of the images and are looking into them after Erling Haaland, a Manchester City striker, was spotted using his phone while driving.

Erling Haaland appears to be using a mobile phone in pictures posted online, and Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are aware of the images and are looking into the alleged incident.

On Wednesday, the Sun newspaper published pictures of the Manchester City striker.

The incident involving City’s striker, who has scored 42 goals in 37 games this season, has not been addressed by the team.

The 22-year-old withdrew from his country’s squad after being picked up by the national team of Norway last week  picking up a groin injury.

Haaland is now “touch and go” for Manchester City’s game against Liverpool after the international break, according to his father Alf-Inge.

City have offered no update on Haaland’s fitness but the striker’s father said last week he is receiving treatment in Spain.

“Manchester City has a partnership with a hospital in Barcelona so he has been there for further checks and treatment,” Alfie Haaland told Norway’s TV 2 Sport on Saturday.

“Now he has been in [Marbella] for a couple of days with the physio from the club.

Firstly, I’m not a doctor and secondly, I think it’s ‘touch and go’, yes. You can’t just go two weeks without training and then jump right into a fight. There must be a progression there.

“They can gamble on it, but if he doesn’t get proper training with the team, then he won’t play. It is about how he responds to treatment in the next few days. He needs a lot of care.”

  • Totti excited about Napoli’s monopoly when it comes to having serious title rivals

Totti excited about Napoli’s monopoly when it comes to having serious title rivals

While praising Napoli and “great coach” Luciano Spalletti, Francesco Totti asserts that the romping Serie A leaders have “been lucky” this year.

Since Diego Maradona was still a member of the team in 1990, Napoli has not won the Scudetto.

With only 11 games left, the Partenopei are massively ahead by 19 points, making a championship victory all but certain.

While praising Roma’s efforts under former Giallorossi manager Spalletti, Totti maintains that they have benefited from the lack of a true rival.

Legend Totti won only one title with Roma, although they finished as runners-up on a further nine occasions across his remarkable career, missing out to Juventus, Milan and Inter.

“I honestly didn’t expect it like this,” Totti told Sky Sport of Napoli. “I knew it was a good team with a great coach – it was a well-made combination.

“They expressed themselves to the fullest in everything and were also lucky because they didn’t have an opponent behind them who can keep up with their pace.

“When we were there, there was always Juve, Inter, Milan who always clung there.

“If you won 20 games, they won 19. Napoli doesn’t have a second team like that.”

Lazio are Napoli’s nearest rivals, but Juve would be second if not for a 15-point deduction. Even then, the Bianconeri would be 15 points off the pace.

  • Premier League Hall of Fame inducts its first managers, Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson

Premier League Hall of Fame inducts its first managers, Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson

Manager of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson won the Premier League title 13 times, nine more times than any other manager in league history. Arsene Wenger managed 828 games, the most in the league.

Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, two legendary coaches, have been inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

The pair left a remarkable legacy with their respective clubs, Manchester United and Arsenal, winning a total of 16 Premier League championships while forging one of the most storied rivalries in the annals of the league.

Since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, individuals who have demonstrated exceptional success and made a significant contribution are recognised and honoured in the Hall of Fame.

It is the highest individual honour awarded by the League.

Sir Alex is the most successful manager in Premier League history, with a record 13 titles, including winning the title for three seasons in a row on two separate occasions.

During an incredible 27-year career at Old Trafford, which incorporated 21 Premier League seasons, his Manchester United side won the inaugural Premier League title in 1992/93 to deliver the club’s first league success since 1967 and kick-start a remarkable era of success.

During his tenure, the United squad was entirely rebuilt several times, including a commitment to nurturing prodigious homegrown talents, notably the ‘Class of ’92’, along with a plethora of international superstars.

He finished his career with a final Premier League title in 2012/13.

Six players managed by Ferguson have already been inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame: David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Wayne Rooney, Peter Schmeichel and Paul Scholes.

Sir Alex’s all-time Premier League record stands at 528 wins from 810 matches and 1,752 points accumulated. He was named manager of the season 11 times and collected the monthly award on 27 occasions.

Ferguson said: “I’m truly delighted to be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame. It’s an honour when you receive recognition like this.

However, it’s not just about me as a person. It’s about the job at Manchester United and the bond we had over many years, so I’m also proud for the club, the staff and my players.

“My job was to send the fans home happy. United’s history and my own expectations were the things that drove me, and I then had to try and develop all my players with the same expectations and make sure we could go out and achieve them.

“I feel Arsene is a very worthy inductee as he transformed Arsenal Football Club fantastically.

They became a tough team to compete with and we both wanted to win, which motivated us further.

“Through the years since retirement, we’d go for dinner together in a little restaurant he knows well in Switzerland.

He is a really interesting man and I enjoy his company, but it is still my job to pick the wine!”

Wenger’s 22 seasons in charge of Arsenal is a Premier League record.

He won the Premier League three times and made history in 2003/04 as ‘The Invincibles’ became the only team to win the title while remaining unbeaten throughout the entire campaign.

Arriving as one of the first foreign managers in the Premier League in 1996, Wenger’s impact was instantaneous and remarkable.

He raised standards through a revolutionary football philosophy and commitment to playing attractive, attacking football, winning the title in 1997/98, his first full season with the club.

Wenger oversaw an astute transfer strategy, including scouting abroad for talent, which notably brought about the signings of fellow Hall of Fame members Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira.

Wenger has managed a record 828 Premier League matches, including 476 wins and 199 draws. He was voted manager of the season in 1998, 2002 and 2004.

Wenger said: “I am very grateful to have been selected for the Premier League Hall of Fame.

We always wanted to give something special to the fans and when you have players capable of remarkable things, the most important thing for me is the obligation of perfection.

“I’d like to be known as someone who loved Arsenal, who respected the values of the club and left it in a position where it can grow and become even bigger.

“To share this with Sir Alex is a great honour for me. It’s like two boxers, you fight like mad and go the distance together.

At the end of the day, you have respect and it will be a great opportunity to meet with him, share a good bottle of wine and memories of our old battles.

  • Spain’s Rodri fumes over Scotland’s ‘rubbish’ play after the latter’s 2-0 victory over Spain in 39 years

Spain’s Rodri fumes over Scotland’s ‘rubbish’ play after the latter’s 2-0 victory over Spain in 39 years

Spanish and Man City midfielder Rodri said: “Although I think it’s rubbish, it’s the way [Scotland] plays; they always waste time, make you angry, and lose. David Garcia of Spain said, “For me, this is not football. The grass was too long, and that cost us.”

After his team suffered a Hampden defeat in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, Spain’s captain Rodri criticised Scotland’s “rubbish” football strategy.

After Scott McTominay of Manchester United scored twice to give Scotland a 2-0 victory and their first victory over Spain in 39 years, a Manchester City player accused Scotland of provocation and time-wasting.

Spain had not been beaten in Euro qualifying since 2014, when they were beaten 2-1 by Slovakia ahead of the 2016 tournament in France.

They had won 34 of their last 38 European qualifying matches, with three draws, but at Hampden Park they looked unsettled.

Rodri skippered a side featuring eight changes from their previous game, and he criticised the way Scotland went about their work.

“We did many good things to win,” he said on Viaplay. “We conceded easy goals – this is football, if you concede easy goals you are penalised.

“It’s the way they play, but for me it’s rubbish, always wasting time, provoking you, always they fall. For me, this is not football.

The referee has to take on this, but he says nothing.

“We will learn for the next time. We want to go for duels, for battles – we always fight, but this is not about fighting. It’s about wasting time – four, five players on the floor, but this depends on the referee, not on us.

“Today we did many good things, but what’s important is the goal, and we didn’t score.”

David Garcia, who was making his Spain debut, also blamed the results on the length of the pitch at Hampden.

We can’t make excuses for that, we have to look at ourselves and fix what we did wrong today.”

Rainbow armband ban: FIFA in discussions to ban or allow band at 2023 Women’s World Cup

Currently, teams and captains risk sanctions if they don’t wear the FIFA-required armbands; Harry Kane, the men’s captain of England, was compelled to abandon his plans to wear a “OneLove” armband during the World Cup in Qatar; The 2023 Women’s World Cup begins in July in Australia and New Zealand.

With regards to rules prohibiting “OneLove” or rainbow armbands at the Women’s World Cup this summer, FIFA claims that it is in discussions with teams and players.

Currently, teams and captains risk punishment if they compete in one of FIFA’s tournaments without the required wristband.

The German FA brought up the matter formally during a World Cup planning workshop because they don’t want players from Australia and New Zealand to face sanctions during the competition from July to August.

The matter was also discussed by the game’s lawmakers IFAB during post-Qatar 2022 debriefs.

A FIFA spokesperson has told Sky Sports “at a team workshop, FIFA was asked about equipment and competition regulations in relation to the 2023 FIFA Women`s World Cup.

FIFA wishes to reiterate that no decision has been taken in relation to armbands.

FIFA remains committed to ongoing dialogue with players and member associations.”

The FA and England team bosses were left angry in December when the armband issue left players potentially facing punishment if they went against tournament rules.

England captain Leah Williamson has been open about her desire to show support to the LGBTQ+ community during the World Cup this summer and wore a rainbow armband when she lifted the Euros trophy last summer.

“Obviously, you hope it’s not a last-minute call once we get there but it’s something we want to do all year round and we’ve done previously,” she told reporters in February.

“The statement that was made at the Euros with every team participating was incredible, every picture we have with a trophy lift there’s a rainbow armband in there.

It’s a great stage and a great time to promote the values we believe in so much, so I hope it’s the same.

“We’re never shy in saying what we stand for, we’re a squad that promotes inclusivity and equality, we obviously have a number of people that feel very strongly about it,” Williamson said.

“It’s not even a question for us, you’ve seen another men’s player step out and be as brave as they can be and they’ve changed their whole life. They don’t know what’s coming.

So, for us to stand in solidarity with that is important to us but it’s something we’ve always done, it’s something we’ll continue to do.

We’re not just impacting football, we’re trying to have a positive impact on society too and that’s one of the ways we can do that.”

Gareth Bale bids a tearful farewell to fans, hints on next move

After leading Wales to their first World Cup since 1958, Gareth Bale shocked the football world by announcing his retirement from the game in January.

Possibly the greatest Welsh footballer of all time, the 33-year-old. When he moved to Spain in 2013, he was once the most expensive footballer.

He had an impressive career at Real Madrid.

Prior to Cymru’s 1-0 victory over Latvia in the Euro 2024 qualifying round, he made his first appearance in front of the Welsh supporters since the conclusion of the World Cup.

Speech by Bale to the Wales fans

According to Sun UK, the five-time UEFA Champions League champion broke down in tears in front of the crowd during his speech at Cardiff City Stadium.

“Hello, I just want to say… what an honour it has been to represent this country and to play in front of the best fans in the world,” he said.

”You support me and my family and all the team through the lows and the lows, the highs and the highs.

I can’t thank you enough and, honestly, it’s been the biggest pleasure playing in front of you for my whole career.”

Bale admitted he would miss playing in front of his home fans. ”But make sure you keep supporting the boys.

You, the fans, are Welsh football; you make it so special; you make it what it is today and obviously I’ll be cheering on like you lot and hopefully see you soon in the future, so thank you.”

    Bale drop hint about future

It remains to be seen where the former Tottenham forward’s future lies. British GQ reported that he made his PGA debut in golf, shortly after his retirement in January.

Mirror UK also reported that Bale had been offered a role in the Wales backroom staff by head coach, Rob Paige.

The end of his speech hints this could be his next move.

    Guardiola hints Bale’s next adventure

Sports Brief also reported on Pep Guardiola joking that Bale has a career waiting after the Welshman announced his retirement from professional football in January.

The Spanish manager tipped the former Real Madrid star to take up golf full-time, making reference to Bale’s famous slogan of: ‘Wales, golf, Madrid. In that order.’

This choreographed dance by Ghana U23 Team’s got them trending after AFCON qualification

Following their AFCON qualification, Ghana’s national U23 team, the Black Meteors, created a beautifully choreographed dance celebration that has gone viral on social media.

In order to get one of the tickets for this year’s Africa U23 Cup of Nations in Morocco, the Black Meteors defeated Algeria 1-0 in Kumasi.

After meeting a beautiful cross from Ernest Nuamah in the first half, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku scored the game’s winning goal, giving the west Africans a 2-1 overall victory.

Following the final whistle from the referee, the team went into wild celebrations, joining the fans to enjoy their qualification.

In a video posted on social media, the players were spotted showing off a well-rehearsed dance in front of the fans.

Ghana will now switch their attention to qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris next year, by finishing as one of the best three teams at the AFCON U23 championship in Morocco.

The tournament will start on June 23 and end on July 8.

Ghana last qualified for the men’s football event at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.

Ghana through to AFCON U23 In related coverage, Sports Brief reported on Issahaku starring once again in Kumasi as the Black Meteors sealed qualification to the AFCON U23.

The Sporting Lisbon winger connected a cross from Nuamah to score the only goal as the Black Meteors secured a 2-1 aggregate win after two legs.

The Ghanaian U23 team got off to a great start after new star, Nuamah fired off a beautiful cross for Issahaku to finish off early in the first half.

Fans praise Ernest Nuamah Nuamah is Ghana’s newest star following his dazzling display for the Black Meteors in the AFCON U23 qualifiers, Sports Brief also reported.

The FC Nordsjaelland forward provided an assist as the country’s U23 team defeated Algeria to qualify for the tournament in Morocco in June.

Nuamah tormented the Young Desert Foxes, creating several opportunities for his teammates but only one was converted by Issahaku.

Check out list of countries that have already qualified for the AFCON 2023

The current champions Senegal are one of six countries that have already qualified early for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Six teams, including the hosts, Cote d’Ivoire, have already purchased tickets as the qualification stage for the largest football tournament on the continent comes to a close with two games left.

Sports Brief examines the nations that have already confirmed their attendance in Ivory Coast, with the remaining 17 nations hoping to join the festivities later.

    Morocco

Arguably the best nation on the continent, the Atlas Lions unsurprisingly secured an early qualification for the flagship tournament next year on the back of a memorable World Cup run.

Walid Regragui’s charges booked their spot in Cote d’Ivoire without kicking a ball in the recent qualifiers.

Due to the permutations of Group K, Morocco punched their ticket after sealing six points in two games.

    Algeria

The two-time African champions are among the few nations to have punched their ticket to next year’s African Cup of Nations. Les Fennecs secured a ticket to the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 victory over Niger.

The win was their fourth in a row in Group F and sees Djamel Belmadi’s side cement their hold at the summit of the group with a 100 per cent record, winning all four of their group games.

For Algeria, it was another vital victory that gives them a chance to battle for a title they lost in Cameroon last year.

    Senegal

Defending champions Senegal have also qualified for the defence of their title after edging out Mozambique 1-0 in Maputo.

The West African nation have been flawless throughout the qualifiers, bagging a maximum of 12 points out of four group games.

Aliou Cisse’s boys will contest Morocco’s claim as the best side on the continent, with the 2023 AFCON presenting the best opportunity to affirm the claim.

South Africa Bafana Bafana made it to the tournament with a 2-1 win over Liberia in Monrovia.

Hugo Broos’s charges make a return to the biennial competition after agonizingly missing out on the last edition in Cameroon.

The Belgian manager, who led Cameroon to its fifth continental crown, has already disclosed his targets for next year’s competition, per CAFOnline.

    Burkina Faso

The Stallions of Burkina Faso just almost made it to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, sharing the spoils with Togo on Tuesday.

When the qualifiers resume in June, Burkina Faso will play Cape Verde in a top-of-the-table matchup.

    Tunisia

The Carthage Eagles joined the six nations to book their spot in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-0 victory over Libya in Benghazi on Tuesday night.

They now lead Group J by 10 points, one point better than second-placed Equatorial Guinea and seven points better than Libya, with two rounds of matches remaining.

The fact that Tunisia qualified while remaining unbeaten and not giving up a goal thrilled head coach Jalel Kadri.

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang allegedly wants to return to Barcelona

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang allegedly wants to return to Barcelona

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is sick of being a substitute for Premier League club Chelsea and wants to negotiate a pay cut so he can join La Liga powerhouse Barcelona again.

In the hopes that the Gabonese striker would assist them in scoring goals, Chelsea paid Barcelona £10 million last summer to sign Aubameyang.

However, since the former Arsenal captain moved to Stamford Bridge, he has been having trouble and has only managed to score three goals in 18 appearances this season across all competitions.

The 33-year-old has also been frozen out of Potter’s plan at Chelsea and he is not happy about the development.

According to the report on GOAL, Aubameyang is unhappy at Chelsea and is willing to accept a pay cut to head back to Barcelona in the summer.

    Will Barcelona accept him back?

The report added that the Catalans are said to be considering a one-year loan option for Aubameyang.

Barcelona have also been linked to Athletico Paranaense forward Vitor Roque.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are in the race to sign new striker in the summer with Nigerian star Victor Osimhen said to be their main target.

The Blues will have to go into competition with Man United who are also interested.

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Chelsea and having striker problems now looks like an established curse after the majority of their previous number 9s have failed to make impacts at the club.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined the list of failed strikers at the club almost immediately after the club shipped out £97.5m striker Romelu Lukaku on loan to Inter Milan after falling out with former coach Thomas Tuchel.

The Gabonese was brought in to replace Lukaku, but his relationship with Tuchel lasted 59 minutes on the pitch before the German was shown the exit and replaced with Graham Potter.

Italian giants Inter Milan are interested in bringing him to his former stomping ground San Siro in the summer.

No cause for panic, no one can tamper with elections results – EC vows

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has responded to critics who claim that Dr. Peter Appiahene’s appointment is intended to sway the results of the 2024 elections.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the director of electoral services at the EC, insisted that the commission’s independence would not be compromised despite denying ever meeting Dr. Appiahene.

“I don’t know him and I have never met him before. I also don’t know if he is an NPP activist or not. Besides, the videos you are showing could be photoshopped so Ghanaians must hasten slowly in their conclusions,” he said.

Civil Society Organizations and some political parties have raised concerns over the appointments of Dr. Appiahene which they believe could further undermine the credibility of the commission and deepen the mistrust some Ghanaians have about it.

But, Dr. Quaicoe asked Ghanaians not to worry, arguing that as a commissioner, Dr. Appiahhene, will not be able to influence the outcome of any results.

“Assuming he (Dr. Peter Appiahene) is a TESCON patron, he can do nothing to change the electoral results. So, we should dismiss the fear that he can manipulate electoral results,” he told the Morning Show host of Kumasi-based Oyerepa TV, Kwesi Parker-Wilson.

Dr Quaicoe further observed that the president has the prerogative to appoint any Ghana to serve as an EC commissioner and members of the commission cannot challenge the president’s decision.

“How can a son question a father’s decision to marry another woman,” he quizzed.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on March 20, 2023, swore in three new members of the Electoral Commission (EC) governing board.

They included Rev. Akua Ofori Boateng Salima, Ahmed Tijani, and Dr. Peter Appiahene.

Their appointment is in line with Article 43 (1 and 2) of the 1992 constitution which states that “there shall be an Electoral Commission which shall consist of a Chairman, two Deputy Chairmen, and four other members”.

Fernandes on opposite sides with Ronaldo ‘over his breath of air’ comments about coach

Cristiano Ronaldo was looking forward to Portugal receiving the “breath of fresh air” under Roberto Martinez, but Bruno Fernandes disagrees.

Martinez has taken charge of Portugal for the first time in this international break, having succeeded Fernando Santos following the World Cup.

In the first round of Euro 2024 qualifying, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg were defeated 4-0 and 6-0, respectively, by the former Belgium coach’s teams.

Captain Ronaldo scored twice in each match, having earlier spoken of “fresh air now, different ideas and mentality” with Martinez at the helm.

Despite the positive start, that is not an assessment team-mate Fernandes agrees with.

“No, it’s just a new coach with new ideas,” the Manchester United midfielder told RTP3 after Sunday’s win against Luxembourg.

“There is no breath of fresh air at all. It’s just a transition period.

“The atmosphere in the national team has always been good. There’s never been anything that wasn’t fresh of the air, so I think it’s just new dynamics, new coach, and you have to assimilate his ideas.”

Fernandes was handed his Portugal debut by Santos, who had guided the Selecao to their first major honour at Euro 2016.

Portugal failed to build on that strong start to the coach’s tenure, however, exiting the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 at the last-16 stage.

Santos then departed after a shock quarter-final exit at the hands of Morocco at Qatar 2022, with Ronaldo dropped for the knockout rounds.

  • It would be amazing if Bellingham chooses Liverpool, what luck it would be – Henderson

It would be amazing if Bellingham chooses Liverpool, what luck it would be – Henderson

It would be “amazing,” according to Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, if Jude Bellingham joined him at Anfield, but the player insisted that Bellingham must pick the team that is best for him.

While playing for Borussia Dortmund, Bellingham has emerged as one of the game’s most exciting prospects.

He also had a standout World Cup with Henderson’s England last year.

Although recent reports suggested the Reds may struggle to finance a deal should the latter two start a bidding war, Bellingham is expected to demand a fee in excess of £100 million (€114 million), the 19-year-old midfielder has been linked with Liverpool, Manchester City, and Real Madrid among others.

Henderson has been as impressed as anyone by Bellingham, and though he hopes to be able to link up with him at club level as well as with England, he said the youngster must “think about himself”.

“I just want him to be the best player he can be – of course, if it ended up being Liverpool that would be amazing,” he said. “But it’s got to be right for him, and it’s going to be every club you can think of that will want him.

“He has to think about himself and make sure he makes the right decision for his career. But there’s going to be one lucky club that will end up getting him, whether that is now or in a year or two it will be a lucky club.”

Bellingham has 10 goals and six assists in 34 games for Dortmund this season, and Henderson detailed what it is about the former Birmingham City player that makes him stand out.

“His potential is through the roof, really,” Henderson added. “He can be as good as he wants to be – but he’s got the right mentality, which is the most important thing.

“He is a really special player and I can’t believe his age and his mentality, how he applies himself to training and the games, everything. I’ve never seen it before, so I’m pretty confident that he’ll be a pretty good player for many years to come.

“Honestly, I can’t believe his age, how mature he plays, how mature he is off the pitch, in the gym, training, everything, recovery day after the game. He is just dedicated to football.

“He’s a special player, but I’ve said it before we just need to be careful not to apply too much pressure on him but let him play football. When you let him play football you can see what he does for Dortmund, you can see what he does here for England.

“Every time he puts on an England shirt he grows and is getting better and better all the time. Of course there are things he can improve on and get better at – he’s only 19 – but the platform and the basis he has got he can go as high as he wants to.”

Tottenham’s star Emerson Royal suffers knee injury and long lay off

Emerson Royal will miss several crucial matches for Tottenham in the final stretch of the Premier League after undergoing surgery for a left knee injury.

The news of his setback came as the team entered their final 10 league games, making it unlikely that the Brazil international would play again this season.

With Emerson Royal out injured, Spurs have Pedro Porro at right-back and the Spaniard is expected to see time in the starting lineup.

The north London giants let Matt Doherty join Atletico Madrid on loan in January, so acting head coach Cristian Stellini will hope Porro stays fit.

Tottenham said in a statement: “We can confirm that Emerson Royal suffered a meniscus injury to his left knee while on international duty with Brazil last week.

“The defender will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation with our medical staff.”

Emerson Royal has made 32 appearances for Tottenham this season, taking all competitions into account, including 23 starts.

He played in Brazil’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Morocco on Saturday, suffering the injury in the 90th minute after a challenge from Sofyan Amrabat.

  • ‘You know better’ – Van Dijk hits back at strong Van Basten and Gullit backlash

‘You know better’ – Van Dijk hits back at strong Van Basten and Gullit backlash

Virgil van Dijk acknowledges that his performance has not been at it’s best but asserts that footballers “are not robots” in response to harsh criticism from Marco van Basten and Ruud Gullit.

Following Friday’s 4-0 loss to France in a Euro 2024 qualifying match, Van Basten in particular questioned the Liverpool defender’s qualifications to serve as captain.

Van Basten, a legend in his native country of the Netherlands, accused Van Dijk of “making noise but not saying anything” and “creating confusion that leads to misunderstandings” in the side.

Speaking alongside Van Basten in his capacity as a pundit for Ziggo Sport, fellow former Netherlands international Gullit claimed that Van Dijk “thinks he is better than the rest.”

While Van Dijk is open to opinions, he does not believe the criticism is entirely justified.

“It is clear that we played badly. I am one of the experienced guys, so it is completely justified,” he said following Monday’s 3-0 win over Gibraltar.

“Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion these days, that’s the case. Did I set the bar unrealistically high? I was never perfect.

“But we’ve had a lot of success with the team. Football players [Van Basten and Gullit] know that better than anyone, have high peaks and deep valleys.

“It’s quite normal that you can’t always play consistently. That you have a phase as a club or player where you are looking for your level. People should not forget that.

“It is normal that people make mistakes; it is part of football and that it is very human.”

Van Dijk has also been far from his best in a Liverpool shirt this season, but he hopes to return to top form soon.

“You know better than anyone when you are doing something right or not,” the 56-cap defender said. “These are difficult times at my club, with lots of ups and downs.

“I am very positive about the future and I try to play my best game ever in every game. We are not robots. Let’s not forget that. Maybe people sometimes forget that.”

  • Dede Ayew exit from Black Stars camp not due to injury, but because he was benched – Charles Taylor alleges

Dede Ayew exit from Black Stars camp not due to injury, but because he was benched – Charles Taylor alleges

Andre Dede Ayew’s refusal to accompany the Black Stars to Angola, according to former Ghanaian international Charles Taylor, was not due to an injury.

On March 25, 2023, the Ghana Football Association announced that four players would be unable to accompany the team to Luanda for the second leg of the ongoing 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Angola.

Mohammed Salisu, Alexander Djiku, Dennis Odoi, and Dede Ayew were the players mentioned, along with Andre Ayew, who was mentioned among the injured players, raising concerns about the captain’s unexpected injury.

Charles Taylor has joined the people who believe that there is more to Andre Ayew’s story as he claimed that the Nottingham Forest player was upset for not playing in the first leg at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium hence his decision not to travel for the second leg.

“The injured players who have left the team is good but not entirely because we know what they can do for the team but I’m struggling to believe the excuse for Dede that he is injured because he didn’t even play the game.

I believe there is something there and is not that he is injured.”

“Maybe he was an angle that they didn’t allow him to play the first leg and that is why he has dropped out of the squad.

The medical team has said he is injured but I don’t believe that.

He is angry that he didn’t play and that is why he is not going to Angola,” Charles Taylor said on Angel TV.

He added that Andre Dede Ayew was added to the list of injured players because the technical handlers of the Black Stars wanted to manage the situation.

“Yes, the medical team have said that he is injured but we are in Ghana. They said that because they didn’t want him to receive the backlash from the public.”

Wrexham is travelling to the United States to play Manchester United with the help of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The friendly will take place on July 25 at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium.

With the recent signing of former United goalkeeper Ben Foster, Wrexham is vying for National League promotion.

They are three points ahead of Notts County and advanced to the FA Cup fourth round before losing to Sheffield United, who later advanced to the semifinals.

The Welsh club were bought by Hollywood A-listers Reynolds and McElhenney in 2020.

“We’re looking forward to being able to play in the United States for the first time in the club’s history,” said Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson.

Wrexham last faced United in an FA Cup tie in 1995. The Red Devils’ team will be mainly made up of academy players.

  • Koeman criticises ‘sloppy’ Netherlands after meagre Gibraltar win

Koeman criticises ‘sloppy’ Netherlands after meagre Gibraltar win

Ronald Koeman admitted that the Netherlands’ “level has to go up” following their paltry 3-0 victory over Gibraltar in the Euro 2024 qualifying match.

At De Kuip, Nathan Ake scored twice and Memphis Depay also scored, giving Koeman the first victory of his second coaching tenure, which he began with a humiliating 4-0 loss to France three days earlier.

The Oranje managed to score three goals despite taking 50 shots and touching the ball 101 times inside the opposition’s penalty area, which is more than they have done in any other game since Opta started tracking this information in August 2013.

They also registered a remarkable 5.04 expected goals (xG), and Koeman was disappointed by his side’s general lacking of a clinical edge.

“I didn’t see enough goals tonight,” he told NOS. “The opponent obviously didn’t co-operate, but we were way too sloppy at times.

“From the beginning, we were inaccurate, and we didn’t have the form to create big, good chances. Okay, there was a lot of blocking, but with more sharpness, we score much more often.

“The game and result against France was not good. Now we win, but that makes sense. But overall, it was far too little.

“Aspects such as positional play, ball circulation, taking the right positions – as a winger or defender – really needs to be improved. The football and level has to go up.”

Ake’s double was the undoubted highlight for the hosts, the defender recording more shot involvements than any other player (nine shots, seven chances created), with only Depay registering more in a single Netherlands match since Opta began collecting the data.

And the Manchester City man drew positives from the fact he and his team-mates were able to conjure as many opportunities as they did.

“Of course, the main aim was to win the match and, besides that, we wanted to score as many goals as possible. Obviously, that didn’t work out,” Ake added.

“That we created so many chances was good, but maybe we should have been calmer in how we tried to convert them.

“It doesn’t happen very often that I score twice in one game. But it was very crowded where our forwards were, so maybe that created a little more space for the rest of us. At some point, I was even considering the possibility of a hat-trick, but it wasn’t to be.”

Arsenal is concerned about Partey’s fitness after he missed Ghana game

Following his absence from Ghana’s match against Angola, Thomas Partey‘s fitness is a question heading into Arsenal’s return to Premier League action the following weekend.

The 29-year-old was fully involved in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over the same opponents in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match, but he was not needed for Monday’s 1-1 draw in Talatona.

Partey missed two Arsenal games in February due to a back injury; Ghana head coach Chris Hughton later explained that Partey was not risked because of a minor issue.

“Thomas has some small issues,” Hughton said at his post-match press conference. “We felt it was too big of a risk to start him.”

Partey, who was accompanied on Ghana duty by Arsenal physio Simon Murphy, has played in 30 of the Gunners’ 39 games this season.

Premier League leaders Arsenal are back in action on Saturday with a home match against Leeds United, before travelling to Liverpool eight days later.

  • Shocking: Brazilian football match interrupted as father storms pitch with child to assault player

Shocking: Brazilian football match interrupted as father storms pitch with child to assault player

At the end of a thrilling Brazilian football game on Sunday, a thug stormed onto the pitch and kicked a player while holding a small child in his arms.

After a large brawl broke out at the conclusion of the match between Internacional and Caxias, television cameras caught the brazen attack.

Caxias, a team from Caxias do Sul in southern Brazil, had just defeated Porto Alegre’s Internacional on penalties when the scandalous events took place.

The video shows the Estadio Beira-Rio, Internacional’s home stadium, erupting in fury as the Caxias player put the ball past the goalkeeper and celebrated the victory by cupping his hands to his ears.

Internacional players and team staff can be seen chasing the Caxias players around the ground, cheered on by their baying home supporters, all while stewards meekly attempt to bring the escalating situation under control.

Several clashes between the rival players and staff are seen breaking out across the pitch and the sidelines, with punches and kicks flying in from all directions.

A number of players from both teams are shown being taken to the ground.

As the cameras zoom in on one particular flash point, one fan is seen carrying a young girl – presumed to be his daughter – on to the pitch, wading into the fray with seemingly little consideration for the safety of the child.

As stewards attempt to hold him back, the Internacional fan walks up behind a Caxias player who is facing the other way.

The player is helping another who is seen clutching his face, his nose visibly wound having been struck in the mass brawl.

Suddenly, the furious thug kicks up powerfully between the other player’s legs.

Two teammates of the Caxias player rush in to defend him, but quickly realise that the man is carrying the young girl – and hesitate, seemingly out of confusion.

One of the players is seen trying to warn the other angry teammates about the young girl, and the trio are able to restrain themselves from going after the thug.

The footage cuts to another on-pitch camera, which zooms in on the man’s face.

With a furious look in his eyes, he is seen being dragged away by three stewards.

The young girl is visibly terrified as she is buffeted about, as the man is pulled away back towards the stands where he first appeared from.

The mass brawl was an acrimonious end to the match that also saw a red card and finished 1-1, before going on to be decided by a penalty shootout.

The match was a fixture from the Campeonato Gaúcho, the state football league of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul – which is separate from Brazil’s Série A – the country’s top division which Internacional also compete in.

Last season, Internacional finished second in Série A – suggesting that Caxias were the underdogs in the hotly-contested fixture. Nevertheless, Caxias came out on top, and will be competing in the final of Campeonato Gaúcho next week.

The incident was not the first time a fan from Internacional has been involved in a violent incident. In February last year, a footballer from Gremio – a fierce rival  to Internacional – has taken to hospital after being hit in the head by a rock.

Russian politician reportedly poisoned after speaking against Ukraine war

It has come to light that a Russian opposition politician who spoke out against the conflict in Ukraine was poisoned with a highly toxic substance.

An outspoken Kremlin critic, Elvira Vikhareva, 32, revealed tests showing she had potassium dichromate in her blood to Russia’s Sota news channel.

Miss Vikhareva claimed that she started experiencing symptoms of being ill in November of last year, including hair loss, muscle spasms, and severe stomach pains that persisted until February 2023.

It comes after a number of Moscow’s detractors have been poisoned in recent years, most notably Alexei Navalny, the de facto opposition leader of Russia, who nearly died in August 2020 after FSB agents smeared novichock on his pants.

She told TV Rain she had not appealed to police for help as it was clear anyone in Russia who took an ‘anti-war position’ quickly became ‘enemy number one’.

Miss Vikhareva said: ‘When the test results came back the only phrase that was heard was: “How did you survive?”

‘I don’t have any assumptions but if a person has an anti-war position and is in Russia, and can express their thoughts clearly about what is going on in Russia and Ukraine, then they are enemy number one.’

She said she didn’t appeal to police for help as that would be like going to a ‘bloody executioner’.

‘I survived and I want my survival to aggrieve those who were responsible,’ she added.

Potassium dichromate, a compound used in wood treatment and photography, can damage organs and cause cancer, infertility and breathing difficulties. It is harmful when in contact with the skin.

Miss Vikhareva hosts regular political shows on YouTube, which can still be accessed in Russia, but stopped showing her face on camera because the poisoning had taken its ‘toll on her looks’.

She said on social media her body began to ‘give up’ and she had to have constant visits from doctors.

But she has since recovered despite the poisoning leaving her with shaking hands, eyelashes that fall out and nails that ‘look like they’ve been run over by a train’.

Miss Vikhareva – who worked on election campaigns for Dmitry Gudkov, an exiled opposition politician – ran for the Duma in 2021 but lost to a pro-Kremlin candidate amid widespread accusations of vote rigging.

The Kremlin has a history of accusations against it for poisoning its opponents and exiled dissidents.

Bellingcat, a group of investigative journalists, uncovered evidence which alleged Russian agents had poisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Mr Navalny was rushed to a German hospital on an aeroplane after he fell ill on a domestic Russian flight in August 2020.

He recovered and returned to Russia where he was sentenced and convicted on fraud on contempt of court charges which he described as ‘politically motivated’.

Former KGB agent turned opposition activist Alexander Litvinenko died after he was poisoned with polonium-210 in London in 2006.

In 2021, the European Court of Human Rights found the Kremlin responsible for Mr Litvinenko’s death.

A UK public inquiry also found he was killed in an operation by Russia’s Federal Security Service which was ‘probably’ approved by Putin.

The Kremlin has always denied any involvement in Mr Litvinenko’s death.

  • Jose Mourinho’s new demand from Roma bosses hints an extended stay with club

Jose Mourinho’s new demand from Roma bosses hints an extended stay with club

One of the greatest and most effective coaches of his time is Jose Mourinho. In the media, he is not afraid to explain his position to players and club executives.

He unexpectedly agreed to a three-year contract to manage the Italian club AS Roma in 2021, just a few months after being fired by Tottenham.

After Roma qualified for the UEFA Europa Conference League in his first season as manager and after they had placed seventh in Serie A the year prior, he took home the championship.

He is approaching the end of his contract with Rome and drawing interest from elite European teams, including former clubs Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as the Brazil national team, according to GIFN.

    Mourinho’s demands from Roma bosses

The Special One has received limited backing in the transfer market. Despite winning a trophy and qualifying for Europa League in his first season, Transfermarkt reports that he spent €9m on improving the team while recouping €67m from sales.

Paulo Dybala, Nemanja Matic, Andrea Belotti and Ola Solbakken were free transfers while securing loan moves for Georgino Wijnaldum and Mady Camara.

According to Sky Sports, Mourinho has issued demands to the Roma bosses, which could influence his stay at the club.

He demanded a new centre-back, a new midfielder and a new striker to take Tammy Abraham’s place as he could return to England.

    Mourinho’s message to Roma board

Sports Brief earlier reported that Mourinho sent a transfer message to the Roma board with his comments about Bayern Munich’s squad depth.

Speaking to the media after Roma’s 2-0 win over Real Sociedad in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16, the former Chelsea boss compared his bench to that of the German giants.

He further said he only needs one of the Bavarian’s attacks comprising Sadio Mane, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and others to improve his team.

  • Alibaba founder Jack Ma is back in China after a lengthy absence

Alibaba founder Jack Ma is back in China after a lengthy absence

Founder of Alibaba, Jack Ma, has reportedly reappeared at a school in Hangzhou after disappearing for three years.

Since 2020, when the 58-year-old began to criticise China’s financial regulators, he has maintained a low profile.

The most well-known Chinese billionaire to vanish during a crackdown on tech entrepreneurs was Mr. Ma.

According to the South China Morning Post, he recently made his way back to China after spending more than a year abroad.

He made a brief stopover in Hong Kong, where he met friends and also briefly visited Art Basel, an international art fair, according to the Alibaba-owned newspaper.

It added that Mr Ma has been travelling to different countries to learn about agricultural technology, but made no reference as to why he had disappeared from public view in recent years.

Mr Ma, a former English teacher, met staff and toured classrooms at the Yungu School in Hangzhou, the city in which Alibaba is headquartered.

He talked about the potential challenges of artificial intelligence to education, according to the school’s social media page.

“ChatGPT and similar technologies are just the beginning of the AI era. We should use artificial intelligence to solve problems instead of being controlled by it,” he said.

Once the richest man in China, Mr Ma gave up control of financial technology giant Ant Group in January this year.

It was seen by some commentators as further evidence that he had fallen foul of the Chinese Communist Party for becoming outspoken and too powerful.

In October 2020, Mr Ma told a financial conference that traditional banks had a “pawn-shop mentality”.

The following month, Ant’s planned £26bn stock market flotation, which would have been the world’s largest, was cancelled at the last minute by Chinese authorities, who cited “major issues” over regulating the firm.

Since then, there have been reported sightings of him in various countries including Spain, the Netherlands, Thailand and Australia.

Last November, the Financial Times newspaper reported that Mr Ma had been living in Tokyo, Japan for six months.

When Mr Ma first stopped making public appearances, it was rumoured that he had been placed under house arrest or had been otherwise detained.

  • Argentina-based Mancini claims Retegui “needs time” to learn the Italian style

Argentina-based Mancini claims Retegui “needs time” to learn the Italian style

Even though Argentina-born striker Mateo Retegui scored for a second straight match in an Euro 2024 qualifier on Sunday, Italy coach Roberto Mancini cautioned that Retegui “needs time” to learn.

The 23-year-old is currently on loan at Tigres from Boca Juniors and is eligible to play for the reigning champions thanks to his Italian grandfather.

However, he continues to play club football in Argentina.

He scored the opening goal in Italy’s 2-0 Group C victory in Malta on Sunday, looking right at home.

His debut goal in the 2-1 home loss to England on Thursday was followed by a header in the fifteenth minute.

“He unlocked the match, he was essential today,” said Mancini.

“But I repeat: he needs time, he still needs to learn more about European football.”

Retegui, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and full-back Giovanni De Lorenzo were the only men to keep their places in the starting line-up after the loss to England.

Matteo Pessina added Italy’s second goal on Sunday from a cross by Emerson in the 27th minute.

“These are matches where you have everything to lose,” added Mancini.

“We did some good things, some not so good.

The important thing was to win. “We could have scored more, but there you go. These are particular kinds of matches, where it’s difficult to play, you don’t have a lot of space.”

  • New penalty rules: Emi Martinez World cup penalty antics allegedly force new rules

New penalty rules: Emi Martinez World cup penalty antics allegedly force new rules

A new set of rules that will be in effect starting on July 1st will make it harder for goalkeepers to stop penalty kicks.

Emi Martinez is thought to have forced the rules after the goalkeeper’s antics during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Martinez’s ability to enrage opponents contributes to his ability to save penalty kicks.

Aurelien Tchouameni and Kingsley Coman were unable to match his success in the World Cup final matchup against France.

    New penalty rules

However, all this is set to change after the International Football Association Board (IFAB) passed on new rules to be effected later this year.

According to the new guidelines, the goalkeeper will now not be allowed to behave in a manner that fails to show respect to the game, i.e, by distracting the opponent.

The goalkeeper will be required to remain on his/her goal line and not touch the net, posts or crossbar before the penalty is taken.

The custodians will also be barred from delaying the execution of the penalty.

Should the goalkeeper save the penalty, he or she will also now be barred from displaying behaviours that don’t show respect which could include various celebrations.

The new rules have elicited sharp reactions, with France’s new number 1 Mike Maignan offering a sarcastic response to the rules.

“New IFAB rules for penalties in 2026: Goalkeepers must have their backs to the shot ❌ In case of stoppage, indirect free kick.”

The rules are deemed unfair already

This comes at a time when penalty kicks continue to be heavily lopsided on the side of goalkeepers. A goalkeeper is currently required to have one of his feet on the line before the penalty is taken.

A penalty is usually retaken if the goalkeeper moved one of his feet from the line and saved the penalty.

This rule doesn’t take into consideration the stutters the penalty takers take before eventually hitting the ball.

With the penalty often a game of wits, it would be interesting to see how goalkeepers will now attempt to put off their opponents.

The new rules come into play on July 1st.

As reported earlier, Chelsea’s ace Kai Havertz saw his goal for Germany against Peru ruled out due to a rare football rule.

Germany took on Peru in a friendly on Saturday, March 25 and the game had an interesting incident involving Havertz.

The Chelsea man seems to have a poor relationship with penalties, as he recently also made headlines for a spot-kick against Borussia Dortmund.

  • Prince Harry attends the hearing for Associated Newspapers in the High Court

Prince Harry attends the hearing for Associated Newspapers in the High Court

As the legal process in a privacy case gets underway, the Duke of Sussex unexpectedly showed up at the High Court.

The Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday publishers, Associated Newspapers Ltd (ANL), are being sued by Prince Harry and others.

Among those who claim improper information gathering are the duke, Sir Elton John, Sadie Frost, and Liz Hurley, among others.

The allegations have been labelled as “preposterous smears” by the publisher.

A four-day preliminary High Court hearing in London, starting on Monday, will consider legal arguments and a judge will decide whether the case will go any further. ANL is bidding to end the claims.

Prince Harry’s appearance will be seen by many as a sign of his strength of feeling over his privacy and determination regarding the legal action.

Others taking part in the legal action include Sir Elton’s husband David Furnish, and Doreen Lawrence, the mother of Stephen Lawrence, who was murdered in a racist attack in 1993.

The group launched the legal action last year after becoming aware of “compelling and highly distressing evidence that they have been the victims of abhorrent criminal activity and gross breaches of privacy” by ANL, according to a statement by law firm Hamlins released in October 2022.

Court proceedings began with a bid by ANL’s lawyers to have certain reporting restrictions imposed in the case.

The Duke of Sussex sat towards the back of the courtroom, occasionally taking notes in a small black notebook as legal arguments were made by ANL’s barrister Catrin Evans KC.

Frost sat two seats away from Harry in the courtroom.

Image caption,Actress Sadie Frost also appeared on Monday, and sat two seats away from Harry in the courtroom

When the legal action was announced in October, law firm Hamlins, which is representing Prince Harry and Frost, alleged that ANL’s activity included:

    • “The hiring of private investigators to secretly place listening devices inside people’s cars and homes
    • “The commissioning of individuals to surreptitiously listen into and record people’s live, private telephone calls whilst they were taking place
    • “The payment of police officials, with corrupt links to private investigators, for inside, sensitive information
    • “The impersonation of individuals to obtain medical information from private hospitals, clinics, and treatment centres by deception
    • “The accessing of bank accounts, credit histories and financial transactions through illicit means and manipulation”

In a statement released at the time, the newspaper group said: “We utterly and unambiguously refute these preposterous smears which appear to be nothing more than a pre-planned and orchestrated attempt to drag the Mail titles into the phone hacking scandal concerning articles up to 30 years old.

“These unsubstantiated and highly defamatory claims – based on no credible evidence – appear to be simply a fishing expedition by claimants and their lawyers, some of whom have already pursued cases elsewhere.”

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, arrives at the High Court in London, Britain March 27, 2023

The duke’s appearance on Monday is believed to be the first time he has been back in the UK since the late Queen’s funeral in September.

His surprise return comes nearly three months after he publicised his troubled relationship with his father the King and brother the Prince of Wales in his controversial autobiography Spare.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also released a Netflix documentary in December, titled Harry & Meghan.

The King was due to be away on Monday on the first official state visit of his reign, but the trip to France was cancelled due to rioting over pension reforms.

He is due to leave for a state visit to Germany on Wednesday morning. Buckingham Palace said he was not in Windsor or London on Monday.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been asked to vacate their UK home, Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate, in a move sanctioned by the King.

The duke is also taking legal action against the Home Office over security arrangements when he is in the UK, raising questions about his own security provisions during this visit.
