Obour insists he left Ghana Post at its highest level

Former Ghana Post Managing Director, Bice Osei Kuffour, widely known as Obour, has spoken about his tenure at the state-run postal service.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program, he highlighted the strides the company made during his leadership. According to him, he left Ghana Post in a strong position, with a solid foundation that only required effective leadership and continuity to maintain its achievements.

“I left Ghana Post at its highest level. It was a healthy organization, and it requires continuity with the right skills to keep moving forward” he said.

Obour emphasized that sustaining the progress of Ghana Post required consistent leadership and strategic direction, as the company had reached a stage where stability was crucial for its continued growth.

He also highlighted one of his key initiatives—introducing long service awards to recognize employees who had dedicated over five years to the organization.

“When I took over as the MD, there was a legacy debt, and we worked hard to clear some of those arrears. Some employees had been at Ghana Post for 15 to 18 years, so we promoted many of them in 2023 to recognize their long service. We also promoted people who had served 10 and 5 years.”

Obour pointed out that these incentives played a vital role in uplifting staff morale and fostering a sense of motivation within the workforce.

He acknowledged that while challenges such as salary constraints existed, employees appreciated the positive changes and initiatives introduced under his leadership.

“We introduced a transport allowance, and the workers were happy. Though the salaries weren’t perfect, they appreciated the efforts we made on their behalf.”

“The post office is now more competitive than before. We were able to improve our transportation network, which made a significant difference in service delivery” he noted.

Looking back on his tenure, Obour expressed confidence in the strides made during his leadership.

“Many initiatives were introduced, and I believe I did well during my time at Ghana Post,” he said. “There has been massive growth, and if this progress continues, the post office will become a great institution.”

A few weeks ago, Obour stepped down as Managing Director of Ghana Post, closing a chapter marked by transformation and progress at the state-owned postal company.

‘Newbie’ Benjamin Asare hungry to leave a mark at Black Stars – Ex-goalkeeper Damba

Former Ghana goalkeeper Abukari Damba has praised Benjamin Asare for his excellent performances with the Black Stars, believing the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper is determined to establish himself in the national team.

Since his debut, Asare has been outstanding, keeping two clean sheets in his first two matches. He played a key role in Ghana’s 5-0 win over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium and secured another shutout in the 3-0 victory against Madagascar in Morocco on Monday.

Reacting to Asare’s performances, Damba said, “Benjamin Asare has shown beyond doubt that he is hungry and eager to leave a mark in the Black Stars.”

He also commended the Black Stars squad for fully embracing the young goalkeeper, noting the trust and respect the team has shown him.

Damba highlighted that the entire team has supported Asare, and that trust has played a vital role in his confident performances. “The entire Black Stars team has accepted him for who he is. They trust and respect him,” he added.

Asare has been in top form for Hearts of Oak this season, keeping 12 clean sheets in 19 Ghana Premier League games. His strong performances for the national team have further boosted his confidence as he works to secure his spot in the squad.

The 26-year-old will now focus on maintaining his place in the Black Stars lineup for the four-nation tournament in June and the important World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali in Matchdays 7 and 8.

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe praises Black Stars’ commitment, revival after Chad, Madagascar wins

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has applauded the Black Stars for their strong performances against Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The team had a tough 2024, winning only two out of ten matches and missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). However, they have started 2025 in great form.

Ghana delivered a commanding 5-0 win over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium in their fifth qualifier. They followed up with another solid display, defeating Madagascar 3-0 at the Al Hoceima Grand Stadium in Morocco on Monday night.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe praised the team for their improvement, emphasizing their teamwork and discipline.

“The overall performance was better than what I’ve seen before,” the Hearts of Oak Board Member noted. “They demonstrated commitment and teamwork more than they used to. No player was trying to play to the gallery.”

With two consecutive wins, the Black Stars now lead Group I with 15 points.

Otto Addo’s team will continue their World Cup qualification campaign in September, playing against Chad away before taking on Mali at home in Matchdays 7 and 8.

Ex-England U21 boss Aidy Boothroyd opens up about Parkinson’s disease

Former England U21 manager Aidy Boothroyd has shared that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The 54-year-old discovered his condition during a routine health check provided by the League Managers’ Association (LMA).

Boothroyd made history as one of the youngest Premier League managers when he led Watford to promotion in 2006 at just 35 years old. He later took charge of England’s U21 team in 2016, following Gareth Southgate’s move to the senior national team.

Over his 18-year coaching career, Boothroyd also managed clubs like Northampton Town, Coventry City, and Colchester United. His most recent job was with Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC in the 2022-23 season.

He has now revealed that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s shortly after leaving his England U21 role in 2021. The condition is a progressive neurological disorder that mainly affects movement.

“I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in November 2021,” Boothroyd said in a statement. “The news came as a massive shock to me, following what I expected to be my routine LMA Annual Health Assessment. I was expecting everything to be fine, but then came the bombshell.

“It has taken me time to feel ready to share my diagnosis, and I have found it difficult not being completely open with people.

“Personally, my passion and love for coaching is as strong as ever, I am focusing on keeping physically fit, which is key to slowing down the progression of Parkinson’s and I am ready to start the next chapter in my life.

“I’ve chosen to not tell people because I was worried they might think of me differently than before, so that has been tough. Psychologically it has been tough, physically it has been a lot easier because I’m a former footballer, but now I feel a lot more able to talk about these things.”

LMA chief executive Richard Bevan paid tribute to Boothroyd’s passion and determination since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

  • Real Madrid interested in signing Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen – Sources

Real Madrid interested in signing Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen – Sources

Real Madrid are considering signing Bournemouth’s young defender, Dean Huijsen, for next season, according to a source from ESPN.

The 19-year-old has impressed in the Premier League and gained attention in Spain after making his international debut in the Nations League matches against the Netherlands.

Madrid originally planned to focus on signing a right-back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold as a target, and wait until 2026 to bring in a new centre-back. However, the club is now thinking about speeding up that process because other top European teams are also interested in Huijsen.

Huijsen has a €50 million ($54 million) release clause in his contract, but Madrid might include a player in the deal to lower the cost. Bournemouth has previously shown interest in Madrid’s Fran García, making him a possible part of the negotiations.

At Real Madrid, Huijsen is valued for his composure, defensive skills, ability to play with both feet, and confidence in bringing the ball forward.

A source told ESPN that Real Madrid has been monitoring Dean Huijsen for years, but his recent rise to the top level and impressive debut for Spain have convinced the club to speed up their interest in signing him.

Last summer, Madrid allowed Nacho to leave but did not bring in a new centre-back, despite nearly signing Leny Yoro. When Éder Militão suffered an injury, coach Carlo Ancelotti turned to Raúl Asencio as a temporary solution.

Another source revealed to ESPN that Madrid is now looking to reward Asencio for his strong performances with a contract renewal. The 22-year-old defender was recently called up to Spain’s national team for their matches against the Netherlands, and Madrid wants to secure his future by offering him a long-term contract with a significant salary increase.

  • Hansi Flick expresses frustration over Barcelona’s packed fixture schedule

Hansi Flick expresses frustration over Barcelona’s packed fixture schedule

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has expressed his frustration about playing against Osasuna on Thursday right after the international break. However, he chose not to dwell too much on the issue.

The match was originally scheduled for earlier in March but was postponed following the passing of Barça’s first-team doctor, Carles Miñarro, just hours before kickoff.

Now, Barcelona faces a tough stretch of seven matches in just 20 days. To make matters worse, they will be without Raphinha and Ronald Araújo, who are unavailable due to their participation in World Cup qualifiers in South America.

“I don’t want to speak about my reaction, I think it’s not good,” Flick said in a news conference when asked for his thoughts on the match being rearranged for this week.

“Players have played for their national teams, but we have to play this match. We can speak about if it’s the right time to play this tomorrow …

“We can also speak about playing Leganés away at 9 p.m. [on April 12 before the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund]. When we play away, it’s always at 9 p.m., so we arrive back late in the night.

“It’s to do with recovery for the players. I am not happy with this. When you see other leagues with Champions League teams, it’s different to here.

“When you play Champions League, it’s not about Real Madrid against Barça, it’s about protecting your Spanish teams. But we play, no excuses

“We accept this. It’s a task for UEFA, for FIFA that they say after international breaks it’s necessary that players have three days rest. LaLiga say we have to play and we say ‘Yes, we do it.’”

Flick explained that he canceled two rest days for players who represented Spain, the Netherlands, France, and Poland during the international break to ensure proper preparation for the Osasuna match.

However, the game comes too soon for Raphinha and Araújo, as they are only returning to Europe on Wednesday. Additionally, Pau Cubarsí will not be fit to start after injuring his ankle while playing for Spain.

“Rapha and Ronald will not play,” Flick confirmed. “They are out. They have a long flight. It’s not the best way. They have to recover, train.

“And at centre-back, Eric [García] and Iñigo [Martínez] will start for us. Pau will be on the bench. I hope we won’t need him because also it’s better he has two or three days more. He needs it.”

2026 World Athletics Relays to take place in Botswana

Botswanas growing success in athletics has earned it the privilege of hosting the 2026 World Athletics Relays.

The competition will be held in the capital city, Gaborone, from May 2 to May 3, 2026, as officially confirmed by World Athletics.

World Athletics President, Sebastian Coe, announced Botswana as the host nation on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, during a council meeting in Nanjing, China.

Reacting to the news, Botswana’s Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, took to X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate and commend the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) for the achievement.

“We made it. We have won the bid to host World Relays 2026. Congratulations to BAA,” he wrote.

Botswana has one of the top relay teams in the world, with their 4x400m squad securing a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Before the Olympics, they also won gold at the World Athletics Relays in the Bahamas.

So far, the team has earned three medals at the World Relays—one gold, one silver, and one bronze.

The World Athletics Relays is a prestigious international track and field event organized by World Athletics. It focuses on relay races, where teams of athletes pass a baton to complete a race. The event is held every two years and serves as a platform for countries to showcase their relay teams. It also acts as a qualification stage for major competitions like the World Athletics Championships and the Olympic Games.

The relays typically include events like the men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m, as well as the mixed 4x400m relay. Over the years, the competition has evolved, with new relay formats being introduced to keep the event exciting and engaging for both athletes and fans.

Club World Cup champions set to receive up to $125 million in prize earnings

The winners of this year’s 32-team Club World Cup to be held in the United States will earn up to $125 million, FIFA said on Wednesday.

World football’s governing body had announced earlier this month a total prize pot of $1 billion for the June 14-July 13 event, significant in the current climate of financial regulation for clubs.

“FIFA will neither retain any funding for this tournament, as all revenues will be distributed to club football, nor will it touch FIFA’s reserves, which are set aside for global football development through the 211 FIFA Member Associations,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement.

Nearly half of the $1 billion total prize money will be shared among all 32 participating clubs.

However, the amount each club receives will depend on sporting achievements and commercial value, meaning top teams like Manchester City and Real Madrid will earn more than smaller clubs.

This payment structure was developed by FIFA in collaboration with the European Club Association.

An additional $475 million will be distributed based on performance, with teams earning more money for each victory. The team that wins the most games in the tournament could receive up to $125 million.

Meanwhile, several players and coaches, including England captain Harry Kane, have raised concerns about player welfare. They worry that the expanded Club World Cup will leave players with little time to rest between seasons.

“Of course it’s another summer where you don’t really have a break,” Kane said this week. “I think we’re getting used to it. There’s nothing really we can do about it.”

The Bayern Munich striker said he had high hopes for the event, however, telling FIFA.com that his goal was: “To win it. We’re one of the best teams in the world, without a doubt, so every tournament we go into, the idea is to win.”

Bayern Munich Alphonso Daviesto be sidelined for months over ACL injury

Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies has torn the ACL in his right knee while playing for Canada and will be sidelined for several months, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

Davies picked up the injury just 12 minutes into Canada’s 2-1 victory over the United States in the Concacaf Nations League third-place match on Sunday. The 24-year-old left-back will miss the remainder of the season.

“Unfortunately, during international breaks there’s always the risk that players will return injured — this time it’s hit us particularly hard,” Bayern’s director of sport Max Eberl said in a statement, which added that Davies faces months out of action.

In another blow to Bayern’s backline, defender Dayot Upamecano has also been ruled out for several weeks with a knee injury, the club said, after the 26-year-old France international was diagnosed with loose joints in his left knee.

“The absences of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano are a heavy blow for Bayern,” Eberl added.

“Phonzy will get all the support he needs on his way back. We will also follow Upa closely in the coming weeks and assume that he will be available again soon. Our squad is strong and will compensate for these absences.”

Bayern Munich currently sit at the top of the league with a six-point advantage over second-placed Bayer Leverkusen.

Vincent Kompany’s team will face St. Pauli in a Bundesliga match on Saturday before hosting Serie A leaders Inter Milan for the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on April 8.

GOC President Ben Nunoo Mensah announceshe will not contest in April’s Elective Congress

Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President, Ben Nunoo Mensah, has decided not to run for another term in the upcoming GOC elections next month.

The 61-year-old businessman, who has led the committee since 2017, has served two terms and oversaw Ghana’s participation in both the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games.

In a statement, Nunoo Mensah said he has chosen to step down to focus on other pursuits.

“I wish to confirm that while it would have been an honour to continue serving my nation and the sports community in this capacity, there is a greater call to serve humanity in a different and equally fulfilling way.

I accordingly want to move on and will not contest in the upcoming GOC elections.

“I understand this decision may disappoint the many individuals and federations who have
encouraged me to continue for another and final four-year term.

“I sincerely appreciate their support and confidence in my leadership. However, I trust they will also understand that, there comes a time when one must move on, and for me, that time is now.”

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) elections are set for April 26. Former General Secretary, Richard Akpokavi, has already announced his bid for the presidency.

Jordan Ayew picks Christian Atsu as the best teammate he has ever played with

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has praised the late Christian Atsu, calling him the best teammate he has ever played with.

Atsu, who won the Best Player award at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), sadly lost his life in 2023 after being trapped under rubble during a massive earthquake in Turkey, where he was playing football.

When asked to name the best player he has played alongside, Ayew immediately mentioned Atsu without any doubt.

“The best player I’ve ever played with, unfortunately, is no longer with us, and that’s Christian [Atsu]. I played with Muntari and Essien,” he told Joy Sports.

“Asamoah [Gyan] and Andre [Ayew] are also up there, but I’ll go with Atsu. He didn’t get enough plaudits for how good he was on the field,” he added.

Jordan Ayew has been in excellent form as captain of the Black Stars, guiding Ghana to consecutive victories in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The team delivered an impressive 5-0 win against Chad before securing a 3-0 triumph over Madagascar. Ayew played a key role in both matches, contributing to five goals—scoring once and providing four assists.

With Ghana leading Group I with 15 points, three ahead of second-placed Comoros, Ayew will be determined to keep the team’s winning streak alive.

Before returning to World Cup qualifiers in September against Chad and Mali, the Black Stars will take part in a four-nation tournament in England.

Ghana’s Black Stars to participate in a four-team competition in England – Dr. Randy Abbey

Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Dr. Randy Abbey, has announced that the team will participate in a four-nation tournament in June 2025.

He explained that these friendly matches will help the technical team maintain the squad’s fitness and assess other players.

In an interview with 3Sports, Dr. Abbey revealed that the tournament will be held in England before the 2026 World Cup qualifiers resume in September 2025.

“Fortunately, the technical team and management will have the opportunity to further work on the team because, in June, we don’t have qualifiers. So, we’re playing a four-nation friendly in England. And I’m sure it will be an opportunity for the coaches to do some further work on the team.

“We’re hoping that some of the players who are injured will also be back and will be able to get an opportunity to play at least two games before September,” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) lauded the team for their victories against Chad and Madagascar.

“I can also appreciate why people were a bit apprehensive about the game. This is a team that had gone six games without a win in the AFCON qualifiers. After Chad, they said, ‘Oh, well, this is just Chad.’

“If you look at Madagascar’s previous performance, having gone away to win 4-1 against one of the teams that was also doing quite well in the group, it was a difficult game. But the entire team was determined to make up for not qualifying for the AFCON,” he added.

After playing six matches in the World Cup qualifiers, Ghana sits at the top of Group I with 15 points. Madagascar follows in second place with 10 points, while Mali is in third with 9 points.

GFA imposes fine on Hearts of Oak for safety violation

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee has fined Hearts of Oak for a security lapse during their match against Young Apostles.

The incident occurred on March 8 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium when some unaccredited fans entered a restricted area after Hearts of Oak secured a 2-0 win.

As a penalty, the club has been fined GHS 20,000, but GHS 10,000 of this amount has been suspended for the rest of the season, the GFA announced on Tuesday, March 25.

The association has also cautioned that any future violations will result in harsher punishments.

Before the league resumed, the GFA put in place stricter rules to improve security on matchdays. However, the Accra-based club failed to follow these guidelines.

GFA fines, bans Elmina Sharks president Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom

Owner of Division One League club Elmina Sharks, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has been fined GHS 10,000 and given a suspended three-month ban by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee.

The penalty comes after misconduct charges related to Elmina Sharks’ game against Swedru All Blacks United FC.

The Disciplinary Committee found Dr. Nduom guilty of interfering in the match, encouraging players to challenge officiating decisions, and making social media posts that stirred tension against referees.

Reports indicate that he entered the technical area without permission and confronted match officials angrily after a controversial call went against his team.

His comments on social media after the match were also deemed inappropriate, as they further inflamed emotions regarding the officiating.

The committee has cautioned that any further misconduct could lead to stricter punishments, including a possible stadium ban.

Elmina Sharks have also been directed to educate their management and staff on respecting match officials and promoting fair play.

Dr. Nduom has seven days to appeal the ruling.

Argentina crushes Brazil in World Cup qualifying match

Brazil captain Marquinhos has apologized to fans after what he called an “embarrassing” performance in their 4-1 loss to Argentina in a World Cup qualifier in Buenos Aires.

Argentina secured the win with goals from Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Giuliano Simeone. Before the match even started, Argentina had already qualified for the World Cup following Bolivia’s draw with Uruguay.

Matheus Cunha scored Brazil’s only goal, but the five-time champions suffered their worst-ever World Cup qualifying defeat. They have yet to secure a spot in next year’s tournament.

“What we did here can’t happen again,” Marquinhos told Brazilian TV station Globo. “It’s hard to talk about it in the heat of the moment. It’s embarrassing.”

He added: “We started the game badly, far below what we could do and they’re on a great run of confidence. They knew how to play smart. I’m sorry for our fans.”

Argentina, who were without Lionel Messi, went 2-0 ahead in the opening 12 minutes through Alvarez and Fernandez.

A mistake from Cristian Romero allowed Cunha to pull one back, but Mac Allister restored Argentina’s two-goal advantage before half-time.

Argentina wasted several chances to extend their lead before Giuliano Simeone wrapped up the win with 19 minutes left, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.

“It was a historic result, winning by 4-1, and that makes us really proud, I’m so happy for the fans,” said Atletico forward Alcaraz.

Argentina leads the South American World Cup qualifying table with 31 points from 14 games. They are 16 points ahead of seventh-placed Venezuela, with the top six teams securing automatic qualification for next year’s tournament.

Brazil currently sits in fourth place with 21 points and has not yet secured qualification, with four matches still to play.

Meanwhile, Paraguay remains in fifth place, just one point ahead of sixth-placed Colombia, after their 2-2 draw in Barranquilla.

Colombia took an early lead with goals from Luis Diaz and Jhon Duran within the first 13 minutes. However, Paraguay fought back, with Junior Alonso scoring just before halftime and Julio Enciso equalizing in the second half.

Adum market fire: Bawumia backs traders’ plan to rebuild, donates GHS200k, 1,000 bags of cement

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has thrown his support behind traders affected by the devastating fire at the Adum Market in Kumasi, which destroyed several shops and properties in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2025.

The fire spread rapidly due to challenges with accessibility within the market, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze. Following the incident, authorities met with the traders and proposed constructing a new market with better safety and accessibility features. However, the traders have strongly opposed this plan, insisting on rebuilding the market themselves to restore their businesses quickly.

Despite concerns raised by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and other stakeholders over the traders’ decision, they remain determined to take charge of the reconstruction.

In response, Dr. Bawumia has stepped in to support their efforts, donating GHS 200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to assist them.

During his visit to the market, he assured the traders of his full backing, saying:

“Additionally, I have heard that traders are willing to rebuild the market themselves, and I fully support their decision. Nobody would lose their respective spots; they all must be here. I promise to assist you in this effort, and I am confident that the government will also offer its support.

“When you are affected, I am affected too, and I am here to help. So, I’m here to offer GHS 2 million from my own pocket and 1,000 bags of cement.

“I had sleepless nights after the news came to me because I’m worried. People have lost their properties; some have worked here for over 21 years and counting. How would they survive?”

Dr. Bawumia further emphasized the need for a long-term solution to prevent similar incidents in the future. He called on the government to complete the stalled Kejetia Market Phase Two project to provide traders with a safer and well-planned trading space.

“Until investigations are complete, we cannot determine the exact cause of the fire. In the meantime, I want to appeal to the government to complete the Kejetia Market Phase Two project. Although we were unable to finish it, we completed about 80% of the work. We urge the government to finalize it to support traders.”

Audit exposes over 1,300 missing ECG containers at Tema Port

A report has revealed that more than 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are missing at the Tema Port.

According to Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah, who leads the investigative committee, ECG initially reported having 2,491 uncleared containers filled with cables and other essential materials. However, an independent audit at the port found only 1,134 containers, leaving 1,357 unaccounted for.

Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has expressed concern over the issue and assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to uncover what happened to the missing containers.

“The over 1,300 containers cannot vanish into thin air. We will ensure those responsible are held accountable,” he stated.

The minister also promised to restructure ECG’s procurement unit within a week and introduce urgent reforms to prevent similar issues in the future.

Additionally, the investigation uncovered the following key findings:

    – Before 2022, ECG had a dedicated fund that received weekly allocations for clearing shipments. However, this practice was discontinued due to a lack of funds, as cited by the ECG board.

    – Despite financial constraints, ECG awarded contracts to two firms to clear the containers—one of which was pre-financed by ECG.

    – One of these companies did not have the necessary license to handle the contract, raising concerns over procurement violations.

ECG’s procurement directorate had been merged with its Housing and Estate unit.

    – The Director of Procurement had no prior experience in procurement and was not a member of any professional procurement body.

The investigation, launched after the minister’s visit to the port in January 2025, estimates liabilities linked to the missing containers at GH₵1.5 billion.

Prioritise Ghanaians welfare, economy and stop persecuting your opponents – Afenyo-Markin to gov’t

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the Mahama-led government of focusing more on political revenge than effective governance.

Speaking on Tuesday, March 25, after the debate on the 2025 Budget Statement, he claimed that the government is using law enforcement to target its opponents instead of following due process.

“All you know is persecution. Instead of focusing on the economy and the welfare of Ghanaians, you have chosen to hunt down political opponents,” he stated.

He further contended that the government’s handling of legal matters against former officials is characterised by bias and a disregard for fairness.

“Justice must be pursued without malice or political interference. What we are witnessing is a clear attempt to weaponise state institutions against those who disagree with the government,” Afenyo-Markin asserted.

The Minority Leader called on the government to focus on policies that tackle Ghana’s economic challenges instead of using politics to create divisions.

He cautioned that this strategy would only increase political tensions and weaken the country’s democracy.

Video: Downpour causes floods and destruction in parts of Accra, with structures collapsing in East Legon

A heavy rainstorm on the evening of Tuesday March 25 evening caused serious flooding and damage in several parts of Accra, including Madina, Legon, Okponglo, and East Legon.

The downpour left roads underwater, slowed traffic, and brought down billboards. At A&C Mall in East Legon, a carport collapsed due to the strong winds and heavy rain, adding to the destruction.

Many residents and drivers were stranded as the floodwaters blocked major roads. People are now calling for better drainage systems to prevent frequent flooding in the city.

Authorities have yet to determine the full extent of the damage, but emergency teams have been asked to act quickly to bring the situation under control.

Hands down for Ghana! – Nigeria’s Toke Makinwa after attending RNAQ40 birthday party

Lagos, Nigeria, is famous for its exciting nightlife, with top clubs, beach parties, and live music earning international attention.

Big spenders, often called ‘Odogwu,’ add to the lively atmosphere at these events.

However, some Lagos residents are now reconsidering their claim as the leaders of fun after attending a party in Accra.

Some football fans have praised Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare for his outstanding performances in Ghana’s big wins against Madagascar and Chad.

Asare played a key role in both matches, making important saves and helping his team maintain clean sheets.

After six games, Ghana sits at the top of Group I with 15 points, followed by Madagascar with 10 points, while Mali is in third place with 9 points.

His impressive displays earned him loud cheers from supporters, and he has now secured the position of Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Many fans also encouraged him to stay focused and continue performing well in future Black Stars games.

Ghana dominated Chad with a 5-0 victory on March 21, 2025, before securing a 3-0 win over Madagascar on March 25, 2025.

Ghana-Madagascar: Otto Addo names Benjamin Asare as Ghana’s number-one goalkeeper after stunning display

Black Stars coach Otto Addo has confirmed that Benjamin Asare is now Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper after his outstanding performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper impressed in the matches against Chad and Madagascar, keeping clean sheets in both games.

At 32 years old, Asare was called up for the qualifiers for the first time and took full advantage, replacing former number-one goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

Speaking to 3Sports after the game, Addo praised Asare’s performances and assured fans that he remains Ghana’s top goalkeeper.

“I think the next game is in June, and he is already the number one. We made that decision for him. He trained very well. We have a good atmosphere where the keepers are pushing each other,” Addo asserted.

The coach also acknowledged the healthy competition among goalkeepers, applauding Ati-Zigi and Joseph Wollacott for their professionalism and support.

“[I’m] very grateful to the way Ati-Zigi and Wollacott also behaved this week and the way they tried to probe Benjamin, help him, and guide him. I don’t take it for granted. Big credit to them. [Asare] was worth it. I’m glad for him.”

Asare was in goal for Ghana’s commanding 5-0 win against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium and kept his position in the 3-0 victory over Madagascar at the Al Hoceima Grand Stadium in Morocco.

With these wins, the Black Stars now lead Group I and will shift their attention to the next round of qualifiers in September. Ghana will first play Chad away before hosting Mali in Matchday 7 and 8 of the campaign.

  • Adum fire: GUTA calls for properly designed market infrastructure

Adum fire: GUTA calls for properly designed market infrastructure

Head of the Business and Economic Bureau at the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Charles Kusi Appiah, is calling for a well-structured plan to improve markets nationwide.

Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews on Monday, March 24, he highlighted the importance of policies that can help prevent disasters like the recent fire at Adum market.

Mr. Appiah explained that a properly organized market system should include regular checks on electrical wiring, building safety, and accessibility.

He stressed that these measures would help detect and fix potential dangers before they lead to major incidents.

“I think, going forward, we should have a good plan for our marketplaces and structures. It should be a policy that, every year or so, there will be an integrity assessment of the wiring system, building structures, and market accessibility. If there are any anomalies, proactive corrections should be made to avoid some of these unfortunate incidents,” he stated.

Mr. Appiah also encouraged traders to adopt insurance policies to protect themselves from unexpected disasters. He urged insurance companies to take a more active role in educating market vendors about the benefits of insurance and to reassure them that their claims will be paid when needed.

“The insurance companies should be interested in taking up such responsibilities. It all boils down to education. They need to give market traders the confidence that if they take an insurance policy and are affected by fire or any natural disaster, they will be supported,” he added.

Mr. Appiah further criticized city authorities for their failure to regulate markets before disasters occur. He argued that officials should focus on providing solutions rather than blaming traders after an incident.

“These traders did not occupy these spaces overnight; they have been there for years. We have city authorities, what have they done about it? When people are affected and are in distress, it is not the time to tell them they were in unauthorized spaces. It is the time to give them hope and a future,” he said.

He urged authorities to create a solid plan to help businesses recover after disasters, ensuring that affected traders have alternative places to continue their work. He also stressed that city planners must take charge by setting up proper trading areas and enforcing rules to prevent such incidents before they happen.

“When you fail in your responsibility as a city planner and our market is destroyed by an inferno, you lose the moral right to tell us the affected area was unauthorized and therefore no help will be provided. That is unacceptable. Bring solutions to the people first, and then take up your responsibility to demarcate and regulate markets properly,” he said.

U/R: Bongo MP urges swift intervention as rainstorm damages multiple schools

Bongo MP, Charles Adongo Bawaduah, has called on NADMO, government agencies, NGOs, and businesses to help rebuild after a severe rainstorm hit the area.

The storm caused major destruction, tearing off the roofs of eight schools and disrupting classes.

Speaking to Citi News, the MP emphasized the urgency of the situation and urged NADMO and other authorities to quickly restore the damaged schools so students can return to their studies without further delays.

“We are still engaging with the authorities, and they have assured us they will get back to us on the situation. This is extremely urgent, and I urge the government, in particular, to act expeditiously so we can fix this issue,” he stated.

Mr. Bawaduah also noted that his office had already initiated some efforts to support the affected communities but emphasised the need for more assistance.

“I have personally made some contributions to address the situation, but more support is needed. I appeal to individuals, companies, NGOs, and any organisation capable of helping to come forward so we can resolve this issue together,” he added.

Don’t dare me or else I will release Addison’s recording – AG warns Afenyo-Markin

Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine has firmly defended the search of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence, dismissing claims that it was unlawful.

Speaking to the media on Monday, March 24, Dr. Ayine clarified that the operation was carried out with a valid High Court warrant. He explained that the search aimed to locate and secure items suspected to be linked to criminal activities.

He also responded to criticism from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who had condemned the government’s actions. Dr Ayine cautioned the MP against undermining law enforcement and stated that he is willing to release a recording of Addison’s comments on the operation if necessary.

Defending the legality of the search, the Attorney General questioned why some individuals believed they should be exempt from legal investigations.

“How come a search of the governor’s house, based on credible intelligence, is now being labeled as a raid? I was the one who applied for the warrant, and it was issued by the High Court. Why is that now a problem? Are some people above the law? No one is above the law in this country,” he stated.

Dr. Ayine further explained that the operation was not a “raid” but a lawful search conducted under the Constitution. He emphasized that Article 18 permits such actions as long as they follow legal procedures.

He also accused Afenyo-Markin of trying to damage the reputation of law enforcement agencies. Addressing allegations that officials took GHS 10,000 during the search, Dr. Ayine dismissed the claim as baseless and offensive. He also warned against using parliamentary immunity to spread false accusations against public officials.

“The constitutional immunity granted to MPs does not mean they should abuse that privilege to defame law enforcement officers conducting lawful investigations,” he said.
In a direct challenge to Afenyo-Markin, Dr. Ayine revealed that his office has an audio recording of Dr. Addison discussing the search.

“We have a recording of Addison and what he said about the raid. If the Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin, is daring me, I’ll make that public. He should desist from maligning law enforcement officers and myself,” he warned.

Dr. Ayine further asserted his authority as the leader of the legal profession, vowing to act within ethical and legal boundaries while ensuring justice is served.

MFWA charges AG to announce name of MP who paid to suppress NSA ‘ghost scandal’

The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has called on Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to publicly disclose the identity of the Member of Parliament who was allegedly paid to suppress media reports on the National Service Authority (NSA) ghost names scandal.

Braimah’s demand follows revelations by Dr. Ayine during an update on the ongoing investigations into the fraudulent payroll scheme.

The Attorney General revealed that former NSA Director General, Osei Assibey Antwi, had paid a sitting MP to prevent media coverage of the scandal, which involved the illegal inclusion of ghost names on the payroll.

He further confirmed that significant progress had been made in exposing corruption within the scheme.

Reacting to the disclosure in a Facebook post, Braimah underscored the need for transparency in the matter, stating:

“We call on the Attorney General (AG) to name the said MP to whom money was given to kill the story. Doing so will be in the interest of transparency and also to protect the reputation of Parliament.”

The NSA ghost names scandal is a significant corruption case involving the National Service Authority (NSA) in Ghana.

Investigations revealed that 81,885 ghost names—nonexistent individuals—were fraudulently added to the payroll. This allowed corrupt officials to siphon millions of Ghanaian cedis meant for legitimate service personnel. The scheme involved fake index numbers and even included individuals over 80 years old.

The scandal came to light after an exposé by The Fourth Estate in November 2024, which uncovered systemic abuse dating back to 2017.

An advantage and a trap too – Otto Addo on neutral venue for Madagascar clash

Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, believes playing Madagascar on neutral ground gives the Black Stars an advantage in their 2026 World Cup qualifier.

The important Matchday 6 clash will be held at Al Hoceima Grand Stadium in Morocco, kicking off at 19:00 GMT.

However, while Addo sees the neutral venue as a benefit, he also cautions his team to stay focused and avoid any mental lapses.

“Should be [an advantage for us]. Actually yes [it’s an advantage for us] because it’s always not that easy if you play away [from home] and there are a lot of spectators, but sometimes it’s also a trap, psychologically,” the 49-year-old told Ghana FA media.

“Sometimes if you think [that] it’s not going to be a hot atmosphere, it’s kind of a trap and you give maybe one or two per cent less, and for me… we have to be on our toes,” he added.

After a commanding 5-0 win over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium last week, Ghana is looking to keep their strong form going against Madagascar.

The Black Stars are focused on qualifying for their fifth FIFA World Cup, which will take place next year in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Real Madrid’s Endrick admits he fears being left out of Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad

Endrick has given a strong clue about his future at Real Madrid, admitting he is worried about not making Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

The young forward has faced challenges in his first season at Madrid, struggling to get regular playing time under coach Carlo Ancelotti. So far in the 2024-25 campaign, he has scored six goals in 28 appearances across all competitions but has yet to start a La Liga match.

His limited minutes even led Brazil coach Dorival Junior to leave him out of the initial squad for the ongoing World Cup qualifiers. However, he was later called up after Neymar withdrew due to injury.

Now, the 18-year-old has spoken about his situation at Madrid and his concerns about missing out on Brazil’s World Cup squad in 2026.

Speaking in an interview with Brazil legend Romario, he said: “To be honest, what goes through my head a lot is that I’m afraid of not being at the 2026 World Cup. I’m worried… because it’s my dream to be at World Cup. It’s even difficult to speak about that. I want go help Brazil to win the sixth World Cup.”

Following their 2-1 victory against Colombia last week, the five-time world champions are now preparing for a big showdown against their rivals, Argentina, in an important 2026 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

‘We will annoy Black Stars as much as possible’ – Madagascar coach’s shares winning strategy

Madagascar’s coach, Corentin Martins, says his team is training intensively for their important World Cup qualifier against Ghana.

He mentioned that the Barea are focusing on their best strategies to handle the challenge posed by the Black Stars.

Martins recognized Ghana’s strong form, especially after their impressive 5-0 win over Chad, with several key players from major European clubs.

Despite this, he emphasized that the result of this match won’t determine their World Cup qualification, as there are still more games ahead.

“We’re going to play our way. We’re going to try to annoy them [Black Stars] as much as possible. Ghana have great players who play in major European leagues.

“We have to play a similar kind of game to stand a chance of winning points from Ghana. This game is not decisive because there are four other games still to be played,” he said as reported by ghanasoccernet.com.

Madagascar enters the match with confidence after a solid 4-1 win over the Central African Republic.

The Black Stars will face Madagascar at the Mimoun Al Arsi Stadium in Morocco, which has a capacity of 12,000, on March 24, 2025.

Ghana leads Group I with 12 points, while Madagascar is right behind with 10 points.

Huge payday for Trent Alexander-Arnold? Check out the ‘juicy’ Real Madrid contract offer

Trent Alexander-Arnold is reportedly set for a lucrative move to Real Madrid, with details of his potential contract now emerging.

The Liverpool right-back appears ready to leave his boyhood club as his contract nears its end, with no new deal expected at Anfield.

Spanish giants Real Madrid have been keeping a close eye on his situation and reportedly have a contract offer ready. According to Sky Sports Switzerland, the 26-year-old has already assured Madrid that he will make the move to Spain.

Once at Santiago Bernabeu, Alexander-Arnold will supposedly agree a deal that is worth €15 million (£13m/$16m) a year – which represents a sizeable increase on his current contract at Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to receive a generous financial package at Real Madrid, including performance-based bonuses and a signing bonus similar to a regular transfer fee.

Liverpool had tried to negotiate a new deal with their academy graduate, but with his departure looking likely, they are now searching for a replacement.

According to Sky Sports, the Reds have identified Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong as their top target. Manager Arne Slot is keen to bring his fellow Dutchman to Anfield and is taking a personal approach by staying in regular contact with Frimpong’s representatives.

He also plans to meet with them in person in the coming weeks.

  • Media reports unrealistic – Chelsea’s Todd Boehly alleged sale of club, rift with co-owner

Media reports unrealistic – Chelsea’s Todd Boehly alleged sale of club, rift with co-owner

Todd Boehly has addressed speculation about whether he plans to sell his shares in Chelsea amid reports of a disagreement with Behdad Eghbali and Clearlake Capital.

Boehly, a billionaire from the United States, became a co-owner of Chelsea in 2022 alongside Eghbali and Clearlake Capital, a private equity firm. While Clearlake owns the majority stake of 61.5%, Boehly holds a smaller 13% share.

Since taking over, the new ownership group has invested over £1 billion ($1.3bn) in signing players. However, the team’s performances on the pitch have fallen short of expectations, leading to criticism. There have also been reports of tension between Boehly and Clearlake, particularly regarding plans for a new stadium, with some speculating that this could prompt Boehly to leave the club.

The US-based businessman, however, refuted the rumours of his exit as he told Bloomberg UK: “What the media writes about is not realistic. We’ve been aligned with what we are trying to do and trying to build. The status quo is something that is just fine. We learn from each other. We have to think about long-term what we are trying to accomplish.”

He added: “We’re going to be able to work it out any which way. If you look at the evolution of the team, we’ve been aligned on what we’re trying to do and what we’re trying to build. It’s a team that’s young, it’s a team that’s got long contracts. All these things were new. In order to do all these things we’ve done, it’s because we’re aligned. We’re executing on a plan that ultimately will have Chelsea where it belongs. We’re sitting in the top four of the table.”

On building a new home for the west London side, Boehly admitted the decision could lead to a parting of ways: “We have a big stadium development opportunity that we have to flesh out. That’s going to be where we’re either aligned or we ultimately decide to go different ways.”

  • Lamine Yamal responds to Rafael van der Vaart following Spain’s victory

Lamine Yamal responds to Rafael van der Vaart following Spain’s victory

Lamine Yamal has responded to Rafael van der Vaart’s “pants down” remark after playing a key role in Spain’s UEFA Nations League quarterfinal win over the Netherlands on Sunday.

The 17-year-old winger scored Spain’s third goal in an exciting 3-3 draw at Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium. Spain eventually secured victory on penalties, earning a place in the semifinals against France in June.

Although Yamal missed his spot-kick in the shootout, he later took to social media to reply to Van der Vaart. The former Dutch international had earlier criticized Yamal’s attitude and the way he wore his shorts low before the match.

“Shorts down, a goal, a missed penalty and INTO THE SEMIFINAL, COME ON SPAIN!” the Barcelona winger wrote on Instagram.
Yamal’s post included a series of photos, one featuring Van der Vaart’s face alongside an image of him walking off the pitch after the win with his shorts pulled lower than normal.

“I see things that are starting to bother me a little,” Van der Vaart said about Yamal after the first leg, a 2-2 in Rotterdam last Thursday.

“Pants a little lower, not making much of an effort, slightly superficial gestures.

“That’s when I think: if you’re that young, you should be happy with every minute you play for Spain. No matter how good you are, at that age, you have to prove it every minute and in every game.”

Despite his age, Yamal has never shied away from responding to criticism from senior or retired players.
He told Adrien Rabiot to “speak now” and “checkmate” after knocking France out of the European Championship last summer following comments made by the midfielder pre-match.

Yamal had a tense moment during the penalty shootout against the Netherlands when Bart Verbruggen saved his attempt.

Fortunately for Spain, Unai Simón blocked Donyell Malen’s penalty, and Pedri sealed the victory by scoring the decisive spot kick, sending Spain into the semifinals.

“I said to him ‘What a s–t penalty,” Barça midfielder Pedri joked of his message to Yamal after his miss.

“But no, you learn from these situations. He is not affected by pressure and you have to take a penalty to miss one.

“His calmness has always surprised us. It’s as if pressure doesn’t exist for him when you see the ease with which he dribbles and how he plays. He’s someone we have to take care of and, above all, enjoy.”

Thomas Tuchel says he has spoken with Foden and Marcus Rashford after Lackluster performance

England coach Thomas Tuchel has had positive talks with Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden after expressing concerns about their performance in the win against Albania.

In Friday’s 2-0 victory at Wembley, both players struggled to make an impact on the wings and were substituted in the second half. Tuchel wanted them to be more aggressive in attacking the penalty area.

He explained that Foden needs to form stronger connections with the midfield, while Rashford was unfortunate with the timing of his runs. England will now turn their focus to their next World Cup qualifier against Latvia.

“I’ve spoken to both of them, also in front of the group. They know that I appreciate the effort, I think especially off the ball,” Tuchel told reporters.

“We can see in the numbers and when we watch the match again how much effort they put into defending high and to the counter-press. Also in their sprinting numbers, Marcus had a lot of runs when we had the ball where we did not see him or use him.

“Phil is just maybe not finding the momentum, at the moment, that he can have. But both of them are very positive, have every right to be positive and know exactly what we want from them. Ideally we try to bring them in more one-on-one situations.”

Tuchel gave no clues as to who would start against Latvia on Monday but suggested some fresh players could come in.
“It’s only the second day after the match. It’s still a day where we have to be cautious,” he said.

“It could also make sense to put some fresh players who really deserve to play … Maybe it will be a mix between the both.”

Winger Anthony Gordon has pulled out of England’s squad after picking up an injury in the win against Albania. He has returned to Newcastle United for further evaluation.

Gordon entered the match as a substitute late in the game but later went down with what seemed to be a hip injury.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White has joined the squad after initially being left out. He was called up as a replacement for Cole Palmer, who had to miss the qualifiers due to a muscle injury.

Coach Thomas Tuchel praised Gibbs-White for staying positive despite not making the original squad, adding that the 25-year-old was thrilled when he got the second call.

WSL: Referee apologised – Nick Cushing after goal error

Manchester City coach Nick Cushing has revealed that match officials apologized to him after a controversial decision denied his team a goal in their 2-1 loss to Chelsea in the Women’s Super League (WSL).

City took the lead through Kerolin, and they could have doubled their advantage when Jess Park scored after Kerolin was fouled near the penalty area. However, referee Kirsty Dowle blew the whistle for a free kick before allowing the play to continue, meaning Park’s goal did not count.

Chelsea took advantage of the situation, with Aggie Beever-Jones equalizing before Erin Cuthbert scored a late winner at the Etihad Stadium.

“The officials admit they got it wrong and should have played on,” Cushing said after the match.
“The frustrating thing is after the [Laura] Coombs foul earlier on, because we were so dangerous on the counter attack when the whistle was blown on Coombs I asked her to play advantage. But three minutes later, it happens.”

Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor sympathised with Cushing’s frustrations but praised her side for their tenacity in the second half.

“From my opinion, the referee whistled since the beginning, even when the ball was not going into the goal so I think she made the right decision and it’s difficult after when you see the result,” she said. “So I can understand their frustration.

“If I was the City manager I would probably be in the same place. But again, I don’t think it changed our belief going into the second half. We created a lot in the second half, 24 shots on goal, their keeper made really great saves, we could maybe have scored more.”

Former Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has urged Black Stars players to give their all as they prepare to face Madagascar.

Ghana will take on Madagascar in their sixth match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, aiming to strengthen their position at the top of Group I.

Their 5-0 victory over Chad last Friday at the Accra Sports Stadium ended a six-game winless streak and helped them claim the top spot in the group.

Now, they face a crucial match against Madagascar, which could boost their chances of qualifying for the World Cup next year.

“Let’s go 100%. I want Ghanaians to see you heckling and fighting. We have great players, the talent and everything is there but that commitment, a bit, just small and we would get there,” he said.

“Sometimes, you can come and your club will be telling to be careful but the world cup is the ultimate.”

He believes Madagascar will be a more difficult opponent due to their strong performances and talented squad.

The ex-Juventus midfielder urged the players to stay mentally prepared, stay focused, and give their full concentration throughout the game.

“The game you played against Chad is going to be different from the game you are going to play against Madagascar. They have a different style of play, and they will come with a different approach. So, you should tune your minds towards the game.

We are talking about the World Cup. Most of you were in Qatar. After the World Cup, you returned to your clubs, and you were different.

“We all experienced this in 2006. Even those who didn’t play, those who were on the bench, after the World Cup secured contracts in Europe. So, those of you playing in Europe, you are sacrificing for your colleagues playing in Ghana. We believe you can do it,” Appiah said while addressing the Black Stars players ahead of the Madagascar match.

The Black Stars will take on Madagascar at the 12,000-seat Mimoun Al Arsi Stadium in Al Hoceima, Morocco, on March 24, 2025. The match will be played on neutral ground.

After their dominant 5-0 victory over Chad, Ghana now tops Group I with 12 points, while Madagascar follows closely behind with 10 points.

Ronaldo scores as Portugal beats Denmark to secure semi-final spot

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal and missed a penalty as Portugal defeated Denmark in an exciting match to qualify for the Nations League semi-finals.

The game ended 3-3 on aggregate in regular time, forcing extra time. Just seconds into the extra period, Francisco Trincão put Portugal ahead after Kasper Schmeichel saved a shot from Gonçalo Ramos. Ramos later sealed the win with another goal five minutes before the final whistle.

The match was full of drama from the start. Denmark’s Patrick Dorgu fouled Ronaldo in the penalty area, giving Portugal an early chance to score.

However, Schmeichel made a great save to deny Ronaldo. Despite this, Portugal kept pushing and took the lead seven minutes before halftime when Denmark’s Joachim Andersen accidentally headed Bruno Fernandes’ corner into his own net.

Ronaldo had a goal ruled out for offside just before halftime, and Denmark equalized through Rasmus Kristensen’s header, putting them back in control of the tie.

In the second half, Ronaldo put Portugal ahead again in the 72nd minute, scoring from close range after Fernandes’ shot was saved. But Denmark quickly responded, with Christian Eriksen finishing a cross from Dorgu just four minutes later.

With only four minutes left in regular time, Trincão scored with a powerful shot to make it 3-2, forcing extra time. Early in extra time, he struck again, extending Portugal’s lead. Later, Ramos finished off a pass from Diogo Jota to secure a 5-3 win for Portugal on aggregate.

Before the match, Bernardo Silva was honored for earning his 100th cap for Portugal.

Portugal will now face Germany in the semi-finals after Julian Nagelsmann’s side beat Italy 5-4 on aggregate. Meanwhile, Denmark will shift their focus to their World Cup qualifying matches, starting with a game against Scotland.

Stay focused until it’s over – Otto Addo warns Black Stars against complacency ahead of Madagascar clash

Ghana’s coach, Otto Addo, has advised his players to remain focused and not underestimate their opponents as they get ready to play Madagascar in an important 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday.

Ghana currently leads Group I after defeating Chad, and another win against Madagascar could give them a five-point advantage. However, Addo has warned that this is not the time to become overconfident.

“It’s very, very important that we stay focused until we’ve made the job, and now it’s the whole focus about Madagascar,” he stressed as quoted by Ghana FA.

“We really, really want to win this match, we want to have a clean sheet, and this is what we’re looking for.”

Addo added that past results do not guarantee future success: “We could have won 10 games, and still we want to win the 11th. Statistics are good, but they don’t indicate that you will win or lose the next match.”

While Ghana has scored 11 goals in their last three matches, defensive lapses remain a concern.

“Football is a sport of mistakes, and who does more will lose. It’s very, very important that we have a positive mindset if we make a mistake,” Addo said.

Reflecting on the victory over Chad, the former Dortmund assistant coach said, “Everybody knew what this game was about, and I’m very, very happy that we used our chances especially in the first half, because this made the game easier in the second half.”

Now, his focus is on ensuring the team continues to push: “Nobody should take it easy, nobody should start thinking already about the World Cup because we need to take it step by step.”

WCQ 2026: Black Stars-Madagascar clash set for today

Ghana’s Black Stars will take on Madagascar today in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, aiming to build momentum after their emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad last Friday, June 7, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars, who have struggled for consistency in recent months, delivered a dominant performance against Chad.

Originally set for Antananarivo, the game will now take place at the Grand Stade d’Al Hoceima in Al Hoceima on Monday, March 24, 2025, at19:00 hours (7:00 PM) GMT due to Madagascar’s national stadium not meeting approval standards.

A win against Madagascar today could further restore faith in the team and reshape public perception after months of disappointment.

With Ghana topping Group I after a win against Chad, a victory over Madagascar could see them open a five-point lead

Many Ghanaians were frustrated by the team’s poor performances in 2024, which saw them win just two out of 10 matches.

Namibia swears in first female president Nandi-Ndaitwah

Nandi-Ndaitwah has been a dedicated member of the South West Africa People’s Organisation (Swapo), the party that has governed Namibia since it gained independence in 1990 after years of fighting against apartheid rule by South Africa.

She joined Swapo at just 14 years old when it was still a liberation movement fighting against white-minority rule.

Although the party has introduced reforms and improved the lives of many black Namibians, the effects of apartheid are still visible, especially in wealth distribution and land ownership.

“Truly, land is a serious problem in this country,” she told the BBC ahead of the inauguration.
“We still have some white citizens and more particularly the absent land owners who are occupying the land.”
From freedom fighter to Namibia’s first female president

Nandi-Ndaitwah says she fully supports the “willing-buyer, willing-seller” approach, meaning no one will be forced to sell their land.

Namibia is a large country with a small population of three million people. Government data shows that about 70% of the country’s farmland is owned by white farmers. The 2023 census recorded 53,773 white Namibians, making up just 1.8% of the total population.

Namibia is one of the most unequal countries in the world. According to the World Bank, its Gini coefficient was 59.1 in 2015, and poverty is expected to remain high at 17.2% in 2024. The country’s unemployment rate also increased from 33.4% in 2018 to 36.9% in 2023.

Nandi-Ndaitwah believes Namibia should focus on processing its minerals instead of exporting raw materials. She also wants the country to invest more in creative industries and adjust its education system to match current economic needs.

She is the second African woman to be directly elected as president, following Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. The only other female president in Africa today is Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan, who took office in 2021 after the former president passed away.
Nandi-Ndaitwah wants to be judged on her merits, but she said that it was a “good thing that we as countries are realising that just as men [can do], women can also hold the position of authority”.

2026 WCQ: Asamoah Gyan urges support for Black Stars

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has called on Ghanaians to support the national team as they prepare for important 2026 World Cup qualifying matches.

This will be Ghana’s first time regrouping in 2025 after missing out on the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), breaking a 20-year streak of appearances at the tournament.

The Black Stars are set to play Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium tonight before heading to Morocco for their next game against Madagascar in Matchday 5 and 6 of the qualifiers.

Ghana has struggled in 2024, winning only two of their last 10 games.

However, Gyan—who holds the record as the country’s all-time top scorer—has urged fans to set aside their disappointment and show their full support for the team.

“I will call on everyone to stay behind the team ahead of these games. I know people are angry, which is normal, but this is the World Cup. There is a new government, and we must stay together and support this team,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

“People expect these players to match past generations, which must be possible, but what they need now is our support to get the needed wins.”

Gyan also called on fans to fill the stadium, believing that with their backing, the players will rise to the occasion.

“We should go to the stadium in our numbers and support them because our players are confident, and I believe with our support, they will deliver,” he added.

Ghana is hoping to qualify for the World Cup for the fifth time and needs to win these upcoming games to improve their position in Group I and stay in the race for qualification.

  • Barcelona to finish LaLiga, UCL season at Olympic Stadium due to Camp Nou renovation delay

Barcelona to finish LaLiga, UCL season at Olympic Stadium due to Camp Nou renovation delay

Barcelona has officially announced that the team will complete the season at the Olympic Stadium, as ongoing renovations at Spotify Camp Nou have been delayed.

The club had initially planned to return to their home ground sooner, but construction work on the stadium’s second tier has taken longer than expected. Due to these setbacks, all remaining LaLiga and Champions League home matches will be played at the Olympic Stadium.

Barcelona informed its members of this decision through an email on Thursday. Club president Joan Laporta had previously stated that the team aimed to return to Camp Nou by March, just in time for the Champions League knockout stages. However, UEFA rules prevent teams from changing venues once a knockout round has begun, meaning Barcelona must now finish their European campaign at the Olympic Stadium.

Following Thursday’s announcement, all of Barcelona’s remaining first-team home matches will be played at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuïc.

Barcelona moved out of Camp Nou in 2023 to allow for major renovations, which will expand the stadium’s capacity to about 105,000—the largest in Europe.

In January, the club extended its lease at the Olympic Stadium until the end of May, ensuring that their highly anticipated match against Real Madrid, scheduled for that month, can take place there.

The team faces a demanding schedule, with four matches in just nine days when club football resumes next week. They will play Osasuna at home on Thursday, followed by a home match against Girona on Sunday. On Wednesday, they travel to Atlético Madrid for the second leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal before returning home to face Real Betis on Saturday.

Barcelona will then host Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, travel to Leganés for a LaLiga fixture, and head to Germany for the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal.

Denmark-Portugal clash: Højlund refutes claims of mocking Ronaldo with ‘Siu’ celebration

Rasmus Højlund has clarified that he did not mean to disrespect Cristiano Ronaldo when he performed the Portuguese star’s famous ‘Siu’ celebration after scoring Denmark’s winning goal against Portugal on Thursday in Copenhagen.

Højlund, who came on as a substitute, netted the decisive goal in the 78th minute to secure a 1-0 victory for Denmark in the first leg of the UEFA Nations League quarterfinal.

After scoring, the Manchester United forward ran to the corner and copied Ronaldo’s well-known celebration, while the Portuguese legend watched from the field.

“It’s for my idol,” Højlund told Danish broadcaster TV2 after the game. “It wasn’t to mock him or anything. He’s had such a huge impact on me and my football career. Maybe it’s a bit ambivalent, but to score against him and Portugal, it’s huge.

“I remember him scoring from a free kick in 2011 when I went to watch the match, and since then I’ve been a huge Cristiano fan.”

Højlund has struggled to score for Manchester United this season, the same club where Ronaldo won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008.

Denmark had an early chance to take the lead when Christian Eriksen stepped up for a penalty in the 24th minute. However, Portugal’s goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, guessed correctly and dived to his right to block the shot. Before this, Eriksen had successfully converted 12 penalties for Denmark and had not missed one since 2016.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo made his 218th international appearance, extending his record. However, he was unable to add to his impressive tally of 135 international goals.

WCQ 26: Ghana Black Stars-Chad match scheduled for 7pm tonight

Ghana Black Stars are set to take on Chad today, Friday, March 21, 2025, in a crucial World Cup qualifying match. The encounter, scheduled to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium, is expected to draw thousands of fans eager to see the national team in action.

Ghana, under the leadership of newly appointed captain Jordan Ayew, will be looking to secure a vital win to boost their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The team has faced mixed results in recent matches, and head coach Otto Addo has emphasized the importance of a strong performance against Chad.

In a pre-match press conference, Ayew expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to deliver. “We are fully prepared and motivated. Every game is important, and we will give our best to make the nation proud,” he said.

Chad, regarded as underdogs in this fixture, will be aiming to cause an upset. Their coach, Mahamat Allamine, has promised a tough contest, insisting his team is ready to challenge Ghana.

Being named captain of Black Stars was written in the stars – Jordan Ayew

Jordan Ayew believes his appointment as the Black Stars’ captain was inevitable.

The forward, who has been part of the national team since 2010, has earned over 100 caps and remained a consistent figure in Ghana’s squad.

Like his father, Abedi Pele, and his brother, Andre Ayew, Jordan has always shown commitment to the team, making himself available for selection whenever called upon.

In March, he was officially named the Black Stars’ captain, putting an end to ongoing debates about frequent leadership changes in the squad.

He took over from Andre Ayew, although Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey had stepped in as captain in Andre’s absence.

Speaking to Joy Sports about his new role, Jordan said it was only a matter of time before he became captain, following in the footsteps of his father and brother.

“I believe in destiny. I believe [becoming Ghana captain] was probably written in the stars,” he said.

Jordan captained Ghana against Angola in the Black Stars’ penultimate game in their underwhelming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Jordan Ayew refutes disunity claims amongst Black Stars, says they are like brothers

Ghanaian footballer Jordan Ayew has dismissed rumors of division among Black Stars players, insisting they share a strong bond like brothers.

Ayew was named captain of the team ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in March, having previously led Ghana in an AFCON qualifier against Angola last November.

The 33-year-old took over the leadership role from his older brother, Andre Ayew, who had worn the captain’s armband for years.

In 2024, Ghana’s captaincy became a hot topic, with different players, including Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, and Jordan Ayew, taking turns leading the team. Reports suggested this led to internal conflicts.

However, Jordan Ayew has denied these claims, saying any disagreements within the squad are normal and similar to what happens in a family. He assured that there are no serious issues among the players.

“Obviously, we are both best friends because everyone is different and has who they’re closest to. But just like a family, the fact that you’re closer to your sister doesn’t mean you don’t love your brother. There’s no problem or friction. We are like brothers,” he told Joy Sports.

Ayew will lead the Black Stars out as captain for the first time when Ghana face Chad on Friday in the World Cup qualifiers.
