“First focus on clearing your name” – Edem Senanu to Ofori-Atta on OSP fugitive case

Anti-corruption advocate Edem Senanu has urged former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to focus on proving his innocence instead of taking legal action against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Senanu believes that Ofori-Atta’s decision to go to court over the OSP’s investigation casts doubt on his willingness to cooperate with the process.

“I assume that the context within which the lawyers for Mr Ken Ofori-Atta had negotiated his name being taken off was simply the fact that they have now confirmed with further and better particulars when exactly he would be making himself available for the Special Prosecutor to engage.

“So I find it curious that subsequent to that, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta is now raising issues that would seem to suggest that he doesn’t seem to present himself,” he said on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, March 17.

Senanu made these remarks in response to Ken Ofori-Atta’s recent lawsuit against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). The former finance minister is challenging the OSP’s decision to label him as “WANTED” and a “fugitive from justice.”

Ofori-Atta claims that the OSP exceeded its legal authority by making these statements during a media briefing. He argues that this action violated his basic human rights and went against constitutional rules.

Senanu also raised concerns that this situation could damage trust, as the OSP had taken Ofori-Atta’s name off the wanted list based on an understanding that he would cooperate and appear for questioning.

“In my understanding, the Special Prosecutor took his name off on the assumption that whatever the layers had negotiated was a firm commitment to showing up to be questioned so that these five cases where he is a prime suspect could be dealt with and concluded, ” he noted.

The anti-graft campaigner questioned the former minister’s decision to pursue legal action instead of engaging with the OSP.

“I think this is a war that – when you want to start a war, you need to think through whether it is really worthwhile. I wonder why Mr. Ofori-Atta at this stage would want to take this up,” he stated.

Mr Senanu suggested that a better approach would be for Mr Ofori-Atta to first provide evidence to prove his innocence before considering any legal action against the OSP.

“If I were in his position, I would have first engaged with the Special Prosecutor, provided the evidence and information to show that I hadn’t committed any crime and subsequent to that, taken the Special Prosecutor on for any legal procedures that he made any mistakes, any right that he’s infringed on but first focus on clearing your name,” he advised.

At least 3 dead in clash over land dispute in Nanumba South

A long-standing land dispute in the Nanumba South Municipality of the Northern Region has turned deadly, leaving at least three people dead.

The violence broke out between residents of Namani and Kumani early this morning after a court ruled on the ownership of the contested land.

For years, people from Kumani have crossed a nearby stream to farm on the disputed land, creating tension between the two communities. The Wulensi District Court recently ruled in favor of Namani, but when its residents attempted to take control of the land, they were met with resistance, sparking deadly clashes.

Many fear that the Namani community may retaliate, which could lead to further violence. The conflict has now escalated into a broader dispute between the Kanyotiib clan of Namani and the Sanbultib clan of Kumani.

To restore order, police officers have been deployed, with military personnel also called in as reinforcements. In addition, members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) are on their way to the area to help bring the situation under control and prevent further bloodshed.

Ghana’s Northern Region has a long and turbulent history of land disputes, often driven by deep-seated tensions over traditional land ownership, ethnic rivalries, and chieftaincy matters. These disputes frequently arise because of unclear land tenure systems, lack of proper documentation, and conflicts between traditional authorities. As a result, disputes over land allocation or inheritance often escalate into violent clashes, leaving loss of life and destruction in their wake.

For instance, in August 2024, a longstanding land dispute between the Dagomba and Konkomba ethnic groups in Zogbee, within the Mion District, turned deadly. Four people were killed in violent confrontations that also saw property destroyed, including several motorbikes. This clash paralyzed local transportation and disrupted the lives of many residents in the area.

Mahama announces new Acting Service Chiefs for Ghana Armed Forces

President John Mahama has named new Acting Service Chiefs for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as part of efforts to reorganize its leadership.

The announcement was made in an official statement dated March 17, 2025 after the president met with outgoing security heads earlier yesterday, Monday March 17.

President Mahama in the statement commended the officers for their dedication and commitment while in office assuring them of his willingness to tap from their rich expertise and experiene where neccessary.

The changes, set to take effect on March 24, 2025, are intended to enhance the country’s defense system and maintain high standards in military operations

The newly appointed Acting Service Chiefs are:

    • Brigadier General William Agyapong, the Acting Chief of the Defence Staff, is taking over from General Thomas Oppong-Peprah.
    • Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, replaces Major General Peter Andoh.
    • Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing, the Acting Chief of Naval Staff, succeeds Rear Admiral Issah Yakubu.
    • Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong, the Acting Chief of Air Staff, steps in for Air Vice Marshal Frank Hanson.
    • Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan, the Acting Chief of Staff, takes over from Major General Nicholas Andoh.

These appointments are pending consultation with the Council of State, as required by law.

President Mahama expressed his gratitude to the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by Chief of the Defence Staff General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, during a meeting at the Flagstaff House earlier today.

  • Conviction rate of police officers fell from 17% to 7% under Dampare – Criminologist

Conviction rate of police officers fell from 17% to 7% under Dampare – Criminologist

Professor Justice Tankebe, a criminology and criminal justice expert from the University of Cambridge, has expressed concern over the sharp drop in the conviction rate of police officers facing disciplinary action under former Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

Prof. Tankebe noted that the conviction rate fell from 17% in 2020 to just 7% in both 2021 and 2022.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, March 17, he called for a closer look into the reasons behind this decline.

“Another area that we have to consider is police professionalism, but it is difficult to get the data. But one data we can consider will be complaints against police officers, and that becomes interesting.

“You will expect that those who have issues with the police will file complaints, and we can see what proportion of those complaints are upheld and how many officers are convicted when they undergo disciplinary proceedings.

“But unfortunately, the data that we have shows that in 2020, the proportion of officers who were convicted after disciplinary hearings was 17%, and that dropped to 7% in 2021 and 2022. So, there is an interesting discussion to be had as to why the sharp drop.”

COP Yohuno’s appointment is expected to bring fresh changes to the Ghana Police Service. Many anticipate improvements in disciplinary processes, police professionalism, and public confidence in law enforcement.

Afenyo-Markin proposes new Parliamentary Chamber over security concerns

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has suggested building a new Parliamentary chamber to improve security for Members of Parliament (MPs).

He made this proposal on Monday, March 17, during the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board for the ninth Parliament.

Afenyo-Markin stressed the importance of having modern infrastructure that reflects the significance of Parliament in governance.

“Indeed, when I visited the British Parliament, even within the chamber, there is enhanced security. Here in the public gallery, anybody at all can throw anything at an MP, and there is no security.

“Mr Speaker, I am therefore looking forward to an enhanced security regime, and I am pleased to depart from this infrastructure. We can begin a conversation for a new chamber befitting the legislative arm of government.”

However, Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, rejected the proposal by the Minority Leader, citing the current financial crisis of the state as the reason.

This is not the first time Ghanaian MPs have discussed the need for a new parliamentary chamber due to security concerns. The idea was first introduced in 2019, sparking significant public debate and opposition.

At that time, the proposal was criticized as being self-serving, with many arguing that Parliament should focus on addressing pressing national issues instead

We are actually insecure here – Bagbin calls for heightened security in Parliament

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has raised concerns about the safety of lawmakers and Parliamentary Service staff due to a rise in attacks by unknown individuals within the parliamentary area.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board for the ninth Parliament, Bagbin called on the Majority Leader to take urgent steps to improve security around the House.

He disclosed that intruders had previously managed to enter the premises, assaulting members and staff before escaping by climbing over the perimeter wall into the nearby forest.

The Speaker stressed that boosting security within the parliamentary compound is crucial to ensuring the smooth operation of the legislature.

“One of the challenges that need to be addressed is to secure the parliamentary enclave to ensure the safety of members and staff. This has been a worrying matter for parliament for some time now, we are actually insecure here.

“We are not safe. Sometimes people can come in and attack us or staff and anytime there is an attempt to apprehend them, they scale over the wall and escape into the forest. This is vital for the functioning of parliament. I believe the ninth board will work assiduously to make this a reality.

“I will call on the leaders of the house to follow up on this matter,” he stated.

Telegram founder allowed to leave Franceb after arrest, authorities continue case against him

Founder and CEO of Telegram, Pavel Durov, has been allowed to return to his home in Dubai while French authorities continue their legal case against him.

The billionaire was arrested in August 2024 after being accused of not doing enough to control illegal activities on Telegram. He denies claims that he failed to help law enforcement stop drug trafficking, child abuse content, and fraud. Telegram has also rejected accusations of poor moderation.

This case is historic, as it is the first time a tech leader has been arrested for crimes linked to their platform.

In a message on his Telegram channel, Durov said, “The process is ongoing, but it feels great to be home.”

He was first detained in Paris when he arrived on his private jet, and French judges initially refused to let him leave. However, on Monday, a French court announced that his travel restrictions had been lifted from March 15 to April 7. No further details were given about his release conditions.

Durov was born in Russia and holds multiple citizenships, including French, Emirati, and St Kitts and Nevis. Telegram is widely used in Russia, Ukraine, other former Soviet countries, and Iran.

    ‘Relentless efforts’
Telegram has about 950 million users worldwide and has always promoted itself as a platform that values user privacy over the stricter policies followed by other major social media companies.

However, investigations by the BBC and other media outlets have revealed that criminals have been using the app to sell drugs, offer cybercrime and fraud services, and even share child abuse content.

It led one expert to brand it “the dark web in your pocket”.

The firm has previously said his arrest is unfair, and he should not be held liable for what users do on the platform.
From his home in Dubai, Mr Durov thanked the French judges for letting him go home.

He also thanked his lawyers for their “relentless efforts in demonstrating that, when it comes to moderation, cooperation, and fighting crime, for years Telegram not only met but exceeded its legal obligations”.

Since Pavel Durov’s arrest, Telegram has made several changes to how it operates.

The platform has joined the Internet Watch Foundation, an organization that helps detect, remove, and report child abuse content online.

Telegram has also announced that it will share the IP addresses and phone numbers of users who break its rules with the police if requested through legal channels.

Additionally, the company has started publishing transparency reports showing the amount of content it removes. This is a common practice in the tech industry, but Telegram had previously refused to follow it.

  • Former Georgian president Saakashvili jailed for four more years

Former Georgian president Saakashvili jailed for four more years

A court in Georgia has given former president Mikheil Saakashvili more prison time.

On Monday, he was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail for illegally entering the country in 2021 after living in exile, according to his lawyer.

Saakashvili is already serving time for embezzlement and abuse of power while in office, bringing his total prison sentence to over 12 years.

He has always denied any wrongdoing, calling his latest sentence “illegal” and “unfair.” Human rights groups believe his imprisonment is politically motivated.

Saakashvili has been a strong critic of the ruling Georgian Dream party, which supports closer ties with Russia. During his presidency, he pushed for stronger relations with Western countries.

In a video posted on X on Monday from the hospital where he is being held, Saakashvili said: “No matter what, I will fight to the end.”

Former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili was sentenced last week to nine more years in prison for embezzlement. This sentence runs alongside the jail time he was already serving.

In 2018, he was tried in absentia and sentenced in two separate cases.

Saakashvili was arrested in 2021 after secretly returning to Georgia by smuggling himself on a ferry from Ukraine just before the country’s local elections. He urged people to protest against the government, but authorities quickly detained him.

Now 57 years old, he served as Georgia’s leader for two terms from 2004 to 2013. After leaving, he mostly lived in Ukraine.

In 2015, he was granted Ukrainian citizenship and gave up his Georgian nationality to become governor of Ukraine’s Odesa region. However, his Ukrainian citizenship was revoked in 2017 before being restored in 2019 by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“This [sentence] is basically sending a message… to President Zelensky, for them to scare him to show what happens when you don’t surrender your country… I did not surrender Georgia,” Saakashvili said in his video address while wearing a black shirt with the words “I’m Ukrainian” emblazoned on it.

Zelensky, who appointed Saakashvili to oversee reforms in Ukraine, has demanded his transfer to Kyiv.
He has previously accused Russia of “killing” Saakashvili “at the hands of the Georgian authorities”.
The European Union has repeatedly called for Saakashvili’s immediate release from prison, expressing concern over his deteriorating health.

The Council of Europe rights watchdog has branded him a “political prisoner,” while Amnesty International has called his treatment an “apparent political revenge”.

The Princess of Wales drinks Guinness at St. Patrick’s Day celebration

The Princess of Wales joined the Irish Guards to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, where she sipped half a pint of Guinness during the event.

Dressed in a deep green outfit with a matching hat, Catherine carried out her traditional duty of handing out sprigs of shamrock to officers, guardsmen, and Seamus, the regiment’s Irish wolfhound mascot, at the annual parade at Wellington Barracks.

She also treated the soldiers by covering the cost of drinks at the bar, saying, “That’s the least I can do.”

As the colonel of the regiment since 2023, Catherine missed last year’s celebrations due to her cancer diagnosis.

Before the parade, she presented medals for long service and good conduct to soldiers who had recently returned from Iraq. She then led the march-past as the regiment’s colonel.

After the formal ceremony, Catherine joined the junior ranks in their dining hall, where a senior guardsman proposed a toast in her honor. While drinking Guinness, she engaged in conversations with soldiers about their time on deployment.
Guardsman Barry Loughlin, who led the toast, said afterwards: “She wanted to know how things were going with the blokes in general.
“She was really nice and really warm. I was kind of flustered.
“You could tell she had a genuine interest in us.”
Catherine then went to the sergeants’ mess where she met with relatives of soldiers serving overseas, including those involved in training Ukrainian troops.
The event dates back to the first regimental St Patrick’s Day in 1901.

  • Rwanda cuts diplomatic ties with Belgium, citing ‘neo-colonial attitudes’

Rwanda cuts diplomatic ties with Belgium, citing ‘neo-colonial attitudes’

Rwanda has officially cut diplomatic ties with Belgium, accusing the European country of repeatedly undermining it amid the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).

Belgium has been at the forefront of efforts to push for European sanctions against Rwanda, citing its alleged support for M23, the rebel group heavily involved in DR Congo’s crisis.

As a result, Rwandan authorities have ordered Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours.

Belgium, which once ruled Rwanda as a colonial power, has called the decision an overreaction and promised to issue a response.

While both the UN and the US have accused Rwanda of backing M23, Kigali has strongly denied any involvement.
In its statement on Monday, Kigali accused Brussels of attempting to “sustain its neo-colonial delusions”.

“Belgium has clearly taken sides in a regional conflict and continues to systematically mobilise against Rwanda in different forums, using lies and manipulation to secure an unjustified hostile opinion of Rwanda, in an attempt to destabilise both Rwanda and the region,” the statement said.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot responded to Rwanda’s measures on social media, saying: “This is disproportionate and shows that when we disagree with Rwanda they prefer not to engage in dialogue.”

Prevot said Rwandan diplomats in Belgium will be declared “persona non grata”.
When a diplomatic declaration is issued, it can strip individuals of their official status, often leading to their expulsion or a refusal to recognize their roles.

Since the beginning of this year, fighting between the M23 rebels and the DR Congo’s military in the eastern region has caused around 7,000 deaths, according to Congolese authorities. The conflict has also displaced more than 850,000 people, as reported by UNICEF, with violence escalating significantly since January.

In the past two months, the M23 rebels have seized control of two major cities, Goma and Bukavu. In response to the situation, Britain has reduced its financial aid to Rwanda as a way to pressure the country to stop supporting the M23 rebels.

Last month, the UN Security Council called for an end to M23’s attacks and demanded that Rwanda withdraw its troops from DR Congo. Meanwhile, Rwandan President Paul Kagame promised that his nation would stand firm against Belgium before Kigali officially cut ties with Brussels.
“We would ask [Belgium]: ‘Who are you by the way? Who put you in charge of us?’ Rwandans believe in God, but did God really put these people in charge of Rwanda?” Kagame asked in an address on Sunday.

Palmer not fit for England games – Chelsea boss Maresca

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed that Cole Palmer is likely to miss England’s World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia due to a muscle injury.

Palmer suffered the injury during training and was unavailable for Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday.

This was the first time Chelsea played without him since April last year, when they suffered a 5-0 defeat to Arsenal.

Maresca believes it is unlikely that Palmer will be able to join Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

“I don’t think [he will be fit for England] to be honest,” Maresca said after the Arsenal defeat.

“His injury is from yesterday’s session. It’s a muscular problem…

“He needs a scan and the scan is planned for Monday morning.”

As well as Parker, Chelsea were also without striker Nicolas Jackson and winger Noni Madueke on Sunday – and Maresca rued the absent trio.

“It’s a huge difference. The three players who have the most goals for us [are] Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke, none of them were inside the pitch,” Maresca said.

“Two of them it’s already long term that they have been out. It’s normal that offensively that we can struggle a little bit.

“I think even until today we are second or third best attacking in the league. We’re doing well with the other players but we could do better with the players that are in this moment injured.”

Palmer has been involved in 20 of Chelsea’s 53 league goals this season, scoring 14 and assisting six. However, he has not found the back of the net in his last seven Premier League matches.

Maresca believes that taking a break could help him regain his top form.

“We don’t wish for a player’s injury but in Cole’s case at this moment, probably give him some rest physically and mentally it could be good,” added Maresca.

England play Albania on Friday in their first match under new head coach Tuchel as they start their qualification campaign for the World Cup in 2026, before playing Latvia at Wembley.

GFA charges Hearts of Oak head coach for skipping post-match press conference

Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara has been charged by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee for skipping the mandatory post-match press conference after his team’s 1-0 loss to Dreams FC.

The defeat, which came on Saturday at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, ended Hearts’ seven-game unbeaten run, with Abdul Razak scoring the only goal early in the match.

After the game, Ouattara reportedly failed to meet with the media, an action the GFA viewed as deliberate and harmful to the sport’s image.

He has until Tuesday, March 18, to officially respond to the charge.

This comes just a week after Hearts of Oak was cited for violating safety regulations when the league resumed.

Hearts of Oak’s loss to Dreams FC was their first defeat in the 2025 Ghana Premier League season after an impressive run of five wins and two draws.

It was also their first league defeat since losing to rivals Asante Kotoko in the Super Clash back in December 2024.

The Phobians are currently third on the league table with 36 points, just two points behind leaders Kotoko. They will aim to return to winning ways when they take on Bechem United on Wednesday in a Matchday 25 clash at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park.

Abedi Pele’s iconic goal resurfaces as Chelsea goalkeeper faces backlash

Abedi Pele’s remarkable header from the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has resurfaced online after Mikel Merino scored a similar goal in Arsenal’s victory over Chelsea on Sunday, March 17, 2025.

Abedi’s goal was a crucial equalizer for Ghana in their semi-final match against Nigeria 33 years ago. The African football icon skillfully directed a corner kick into the far post from a tight angle, leveling the score.

A video of the goal was shared on X (formerly Twitter) after frustrated Chelsea fans complained about conceding a nearly identical goal against Arsenal in the London Derby.

In that match, Merino connected with Martin Ødegaard’s corner to score the winning goal at the Emirates Stadium, securing Arsenal’s triumph.

Many fans blamed Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, for poor positioning, calling it a ‘cheap’ goal. A disappointed Chelsea fan, using the handle @hasanalnaqour, voiced his frustration on X.

“How can you concede that!!!!,” he wrote as captain for the video of Merino’s header.

‘I have my own style’ – Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes to Roy Keane criticism

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has acknowledged his respect for former club skipper Roy Keane but insists he has his own way of leading the team, despite Keane’s criticism of his work ethic.

Fernandes, who was named man of the match in United’s 3-0 victory over struggling Leicester City on Sunday, was recently called out by Keane on the Stick to Football podcast.

The 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder has faced criticism in the past for his on-field behavior, including his constant gestures and complaints, which he admits can sometimes frustrate both teammates and opponents.

“I do things in my own way,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “Obviously it’s not nice to hear those things about you, but at the same time it motivates you and obviously people think there’s a lot of things you need to improve.

“You have to take it in a positive understanding that whatever people are saying, if it’s a margin to improve or not. I have a huge respect for Roy Keane.

“Obviously not everything I do everyone will like or think in the same way and I respect everyone’s opinion and I have huge respect for Roy Keane and I accept there’s a lot of margin for improvement in my game, in my leadership and everything I do in my life.”

This season, Bruno Fernandes has played 44 matches for Manchester United in all competitions, scoring 16 goals and providing 15 assists. In their win against Leicester, he scored once and set up two more goals.

Manchester United currently sit 13th in the Premier League table with 37 points from 29 games.

“He’s a special guy in that aspect, he is always ready, he can recover quite well,” United manager Ruben Amorim said of his captain. “I don’t know the future but I’m reading what the performance department tell me, the numbers, and then what I see in the game.

“I always see a Bruno that is dangerous and one Bruno that can recover in every situation. So he is going to stay there. I already knew Bruno. What surprised me the most is the way he works every day.”

2026 World Cup: See Dede Ayew’s reaction to his exclusion from the Black Stars team

Former Ghanaian midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has revealed that André Dede Ayew is not bothered about being left out of the Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

According to Agyemang-Badu, he spoke with Ayew after the squad announcement, and the Le Havre forward remains unshaken by his exclusion from the national team.

“I spoke to Dede Ayew, and he is not worried,” Agyemang-Badu said during an interview with Connect FM.

The retired footballer noted that, although Dede’s recent performances for his club side have improved, head coach Otto Addo’s decision to exempt him from the squad should be respected by the players and the public.

“We all know that player selection for the Black Stars is based on performance. Dede is delivering, but we must respect the coach’s choice,” he added.

Before the squad was announced, Dede Ayew reaffirmed his commitment to the national team, stating that he has no plans to retire anytime soon.

Coach Otto Addo’s squad selection saw Thomas Partey return after a brief absence, while Ayew was once again excluded.

Ghana’s Black Stars will take on Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 21, 2025, before traveling to face Madagascar on March 24, 2025.

The team currently sits second in Group I with nine points, the same as leaders Comoros. Madagascar is third with seven points, while Mali follows with five.

Sadio Mane and his wife, Aisha Tamba, have welcomed their first child, a baby girl. The Al-Nassr forward marked the special occasion with a unique goal celebration during his team’s 3-1 victory over Al Kholood on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

Mane, who married Tamba in January 2024, celebrated his goal by mimicking the act of cradling a baby—a tribute to his newborn daughter.

The match saw Cristiano Ronaldo open the scoring in the fourth minute before Mane extended the lead in the 26th minute. Jhon Duran later secured the win with a goal just before halftime.

Earlier this year, on their first wedding anniversary, the 32-year-old footballer had shared his hopes for a big family with his 19-year-old wife.

In a chat with Senepeopleplus, the player said: “Funny question. If it is just a choice, I would say three or four. Except that it is God who decides, and I will thank him no matter what.”

Stefano Pioli’s team will return to action on April 4 after the international break, facing defending champions Al-Hilal.

Senegalese forward Sadio Mane has had a challenging season, managing just seven goals in 25 league matches and nine across all competitions.

Despite his struggles in front of goal, Mane has provided 10 assists, helping Al-Nassr secure third place in the Saudi Pro League. However, they remain 10 points behind league leaders Al-Ittihad.

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed disappointment in Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI, for being involved in multiple conflicts that have disrupted peace in some communities.

Reports indicate that the Asantehene’s frustration is linked to a committee’s findings on the Adanwomase dispute over the community’s deity, which implicated Bantamahene.

During a meeting at the Kumasi Traditional Council, Bantamahene was fined eight rams for disobeying the Asantehene’s orders regarding the case. He was required to pay two of the rams immediately.

In rebuking the Bantamahene’s behavior, the Asantehene sternly quizzed “What at all do you seek?”

The Asantehene is reportedly troubled by Bantamahene’s actions, which he believes are disrupting peace and stability in the region.

COP Mensah (Rtd) urges IGP Yohuno to correct ‘biased’ promotions under Dampare

Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah has called on the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to address long-standing issues with officer promotions in the Ghana Police Service.

His appeal comes after Dr. George Akuffo Dampare was removed as IGP and replaced by COP Yohuno.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, COP Mensah claimed that under Dr. Dampare’s leadership, many officers were unfairly promoted while others, who deserved advancement, were overlooked. He believes this created frustration and stagnation within the service.

He added that these promotion challenges contributed to internal tensions in the police force, which is why he supports the decision to replace Dr. Dampare.

“We are praying that Mr Yohuno will come and correct all these promotion difficulties where junior officers will be promoted over and above their seniors without any reasonable evidence showing that they have done something better than anybody,” he said on Friday, March 14.

Some frustrated police officers have taken legal action, claiming they were unfairly denied promotions under Dr. Dampare’s leadership.

They argue that despite their experience and qualifications, they were not given the chance to advance in their careers.

In light of this, COP Mensah has urged the new IGP to focus on fairness and transparency in the promotion process. He believes this will help rebuild trust and boost morale among officers.

He also stressed that resolving these issues is essential for maintaining strong leadership and discipline within the Ghana Police Service.

“I know Yohuno will do that, I trust him,” he added.

This case highlights the university’s ongoing commitment to addressing such issues and enforcing its policies on misconduct.

The University of Ghana has a comprehensive Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy aimed at fostering a safe and respectful environment for all members of its community. The policy defines sexual harassment broadly, including unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.

Also, in 2019 two lecturers, Prof. Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Kwame Butakor, were implicated following the “Sex for Grades” exposé.

This was a 2019 BBC documentary that revealed instances of sexual harassment in West African universities, including the University of Ghana. Govt to introduce national day of prayer and thanksgiving

The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the ministry to organize national prayer and thanksgiving events for both Christians and Muslims.

To achieve this, a special task force will be formed, including representatives from all Muslim sects, to coordinate a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service. Similarly, Christian denominations will collaborate to establish a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day.

Ahmed Ibrahim made this known during a visit to various Muslim communities on Friday, March 14. His team donated essential food items such as rice and sugar, along with an undisclosed amount of money, to support them during Ramadan.

Among the leaders visited were the National Chief Imam, the Supreme Leader of the Al-Suna Muslim Community, the Ameer of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, and the Supreme Leader of the Shia Muslim Community.

During the visit, the minister also addressed concerns raised by Muslim leaders about the challenges some Muslim students face in mission schools, particularly restrictions on practicing their religious beliefs. He assured them that the government is committed to promoting religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

“The kind of religious tolerance that we have, which has long been an asset to the country, must be preserved. Their prayer is that we do everything possible to promote it.

“Concern was also raised about Muslim students being denied the right to observe their religious practices in some mission schools. Their opinion was that we must create a platform, together with the Minister for Education, as well as the leadership of the Education Service, to find an amicable solution to the problem.”

“We were tasked with working together with the National Peace Council and religious institutions to resolve the situation, which I believe may not be too difficult to achieve”he said.

He assured that after Ramadan, he would engage relevant stakeholders to find a lasting solution and foster mutual respect for religious diversity.

“His Excellency, the President, recognizes the role of Allah in governance. Therefore, he has tasked the ministry with establishing a National Thanksgiving Service for both our Muslim and Christian brothers and sisters.

“Additionally, we were directed to form a task force that will institute a National Prayer Day for Muslims and a similar one for Christians. We have already made initial contact with them, but we will revisit the issue after Ramadan to get their representatives for the committee,” he noted.

Vini Junior has a day off – Ancelotti says as Real Madrid prep for Villarreal clash

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr is feeling tired but will still be available for their LaLiga match against Villarreal on Saturday, according to coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The Brazilian was given an extra day to rest and did not join team training on Friday. Instead, he stayed inside the club’s facilities, as reported by local media.

This comes after Real Madrid’s intense Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, which went into extra time before they secured a 4-2 win on penalties.

“We have given him an extra day’s rest because he is still very tired,” Ancelotti told a press conference.

“Tomorrow he will be available and at full strength to help us. He doesn’t have any problems, just a bit of tiredness.”

The Italian coach backed the 24-year-old, who missed a late second-half penalty against Atletico.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LpqMx2jUo8

“For us, for me, Vinicius is an indisputable player,” Ancelotti added. “He may have better or worse games, moments. But I don’t dispute that.

“Even if sometimes he doesn’t play well, even if he fails, he has been so important for this club that I can’t argue with that.”

Real Madrid has faced some challenges in their bid to defend the LaLiga title. They are currently in second place, having won only two of their last six matches.

The team is tied on 57 points with league leaders Barcelona, who have an extra game to play. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid sits in third place, just one point behind. Barcelona will face Atletico on Sunday, while Villarreal, who are in fifth place, continue to push for a higher spot in the standings.

“We have to make an extra effort (on Saturday),” Ancelotti said.

“We can’t feel fresh, because we haven’t had the time needed. But we can put other things on the pitch: quality, a good attitude, play an intelligent game… There is not only one way to win. There are many, defending well, for example.”

  • Pep Guardiola hails Brighton as one of the top clubs in football ahead of clash

Pep Guardiola hails Brighton as one of the top clubs in football ahead of clash

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has shared his thoughts ahead of their upcoming match against Brighton this weekend.

Following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in their last game, Guardiola is eager for his team to return to winning ways. Meanwhile, Brighton is in great form, having won their last six matches.

Speaking at a press conference, the Spanish coach praised Brighton for their smart approach to signing players and managers, as well as their impressive style of play. A victory in this match could help City climb into the top four.

“I think Brighton are one of the best clubs working on and off the pitch,” said Guardiola.

“I think they started with Graham Potter, they made a step forward again under Roberto De Zerbi, and now with this exceptional young manager who’s doing incredibly good things.

“It’s not a surprise I’d say, because they’re doing really, really well in the transfer market and the way they play.

“They’re absolutely one of the toughest opponents and in the past there are many teams who were in the middle positions or bottom or whatever, but they make an incredible step up in terms of organisation and consistency for many, many years, that’s the reality.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJQWKFoL1u8

“It’s not a secret what they’ve been doing. They’re in this position because they’re doing good things, they deserve to be (where they are) in the table.”

He next spoke about the rise of Brighton and other teams from the middle of the league who are challenging for European spots this season. Guardiola named five sides who he thinks could rival City until the end of the season.

“And Bournemouth, and Aston Villa, and Newcastle, and maybe Fulham. Fantastic teams,” he said. “Not a surprise. I had the feeling that they deserve it. They are really good, consistent, they have incredible weapons in the way they play.

Guardiola has admitted that he is not upset about Manchester City’s elimination from the Champions League after their defeat to Real Madrid. He acknowledged that his team is no longer in the competition and has accepted the outcome.

He also shared his thoughts on Atletico Madrid’s controversial exit, where Julian Alvarez’s penalty was ruled out because he made two touches before the ball went in.

“It doesn’t hurt. I don’t have any disappointment. We don’t deserve to be there,” he said. “I Enjoy football for the fantastic games. I am just a spectator to learn and enjoy. I don’t have any feeling that it’s a pity to be out.

“There are incredible teams like Atletico, Liverpool who are out. This competition, what happened with Julian (Alvarez) and Atletico – the margins. Can you imagine you are out of the Champions League for that reason? Atletico were brilliant with the style they played against Madrid but look at that and seasons being good or bad are judged on that.

High expectations and family – Alfred Duncan explains why he snubbed return to Black Stars

Former Ghanaian midfielder Alfred Duncan has disclosed that he rejected offers to return to the Black Stars, despite being approached by the team’s last two head coaches.

Duncan, who currently plays for Venezia, made his debut for Ghana in 2016 during an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Mozambique. However, in 2019, he decided to retire from international football.

In an interview with Sporty FM, Duncan explained that he had already made up his mind about stepping away from the national team and found it difficult to change his decision

“Yes, I think for the past two years, the two new coaches both reached out to me and wanted to work with me. But for me, it was very difficult to go back to the national team because the expectations were really high. I had already made a decision, and I was stable with where I wanted to be,” he said.

Duncan further cited personal reasons, particularly his desire to spend more time with his family, as a key factor in his decision.

“During the international break, I am able to spend more time with my family. That was one of the best decisions I ever made because I had less time with them before. Making that decision really helped me a lot, so I wasn’t willing to go back and abandon that situation,” he added.

The 30-year-old midfielder made a total of nine appearances for Ghana before retiring from international football.

US to bear cost of deporting over 50 Ghanaians back home – Ablakwa

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that the Ghanaian government is not responsible for the travel expenses of Ghanaians facing deportation from the United States.

Speaking in Parliament while responding to questions about his ministry, on Thursday March 13, the North Tongu MP explained that the U.S. government is covering all travel costs for deportees. He emphasized that Ghana’s only responsibility is to facilitate their return by issuing the necessary travel certificates.

“There’s another issue I must quickly speak to which has to do with the tickets with the returnees. Let place on record that the USA authorities are bearing the cost. They are paying the ticket fares for the deportation of our nationals and all of these deportations they are doing they are taking acre of the cost. We are only to facilitate by providing the travel certificate and making sure that as receiving country we are ready to receive them when they arrive but we are not paying for the tickets , the US authorities are handling that” he said.

His comments come amid the U.S. government’s intensified immigration enforcement, which has led to the mass deportation of undocumented migrants.

He further went on to assured Ghanaians that the individuals being deported from the United States are not criminals but rather hardworking people who failed to regularize their immigration status.

Providing details in Parliament, the North Tongu MP stated, “And in terms of the profile, so far I can confirm that so far the profiling we have done these are indeed Ghanaians but they are Ghanaians who did not commit any crime, or are hardedned criminals, they are decent people who were in such of greener pastures and didn’t regularise their stay….They are very harmless so there shouldn’t be concern in Ghana that when we accept theese people they may attack or undermine the safety of our nationals

Ablakwa urged Ghanaians to support these deportees who are facing this setback following their quest to seek greenr pastures.
“…they need is our empathy and our care and show them compassion” he added.

Mr. Ablakwa also revealed that the affected individuals are scheduled to depart the U.S. on March 19, March 28, and April 1.

“None of the affected Ghanaians are in detention as we speak. 50 out of the 150 individuals have received final deportation orders for court. Their deportation is expected to take place by mid-year. The remaining 100 cases are either under appeal or have been dismissed” he continued.

The ongoing deportations are part of an intensified immigration enforcement effort by U.S. authorities, which began on January 26. The crackdown, led by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, has so far resulted in nearly 1,000 arrests, focusing on individuals considered threats to public safety and national security.

  • Passport fees would not cost govt any financial loss – Foreign Affairs Minister clarifies

Passport fees would not cost govt any financial loss – Foreign Affairs Minister clarifies

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced plans to reduce the cost of the 32-page passport from GHS 500 to GHS 350.

This decision is in line with the government’s promise to review passport fees if they win the 2024 elections, following a 400% increase in charges for the 32-page booklet and other passport types in order to cover the cost of producing the passport booklets.

Speaking in Parliament while addressing questions related to his ministry, Mr. Ablakwa explained that the fee reduction aims to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians and wouldn’t cause any financial loss to government.

“The work we have done with our colleagues in the ministry we are confident that with the 350 cedis will not put us in any indebtedness . there will be no loss to the state, we will not be causing financial loss to the state and will not require subsidies, we will not have to subsidies.

The quantum leap from 100 to 500 was just too draconian and it was too you could tell Ghanaian people were not happy” he added.

He also explained that the move to reduce the price of the 32 page passport booklet is aimed at making passport easily accessbile to all Ghanaians.

“In our effort to make passports more accessible to all Ghanaians, and per instructions I have received from His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, we are pleased to announce the reduction of the ordinary passport booklet, that is the 32-page booklet from the GH₵500 to GH₵350” he said.

Meanwhile, passport fees were increased under the Akufo-Addo-led government on April 1, 2024. The new fees were as follows: 32-page standard passport at 500 cedis, 48-page standard passport at 644 cedis, 32-page expedited passport at 700 cedis, and 48-page expedited passport at 800 cedis.

Following the hike in fees, there were reports of low patronage by some Ghanaians over the draconian leap in prices.

Despite this directive facing strong opposition from dissenters including some passport applicants, agents and some stakeholders, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in a statement clarified that the decision to increase passport prices aligns with the 2023 fees regulations, L.I.2481.

Prof Aning, Imani file drag Mahama to Supreme Court to prevent removal of IGP, other security heads

Imani Ghana and security expert Professor Kwesi Aning have taken legal action at the Supreme Court to stop the President from dismissing the Inspector-General of Police and other security heads until an ongoing court case on the issue is resolved in May 2025.

The plaintiffs argue that removing these officials before the case is decided would be unfair.

This lawsuit follows widespread reports suggesting that the President plans to replace the Inspector-General of Police and other top security officials.

In the suit, the plaintiffs prayed the court that “In the circumstance, I humbly and respectfully pray the honourable court for an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the Defendant/Respondent its principals, including His Excellency the President of the Republic, the respective Council of the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Police Service, National Fire

The suit further noted “That without a doubt, the suit, which raises very serious constitutional issues and with the balance of convenience heavily tilting in favour of the Applicants this application has merit.

“That the Defendant suffers no injury, should the application be granted, especially since, the decision is in no way far to be delivered; and more so, since, in the event Plaintiffs do not emerge victorious in the final action, the Executive will not be proscribed in exercising their rights of removal of any of these heads.

“That this is an apposite case which is just and convenient, that the instant application is granted”.

According to the Minority, electricity tariffs will be reviewed every three months, and the government has not introduced any measures to ease the financial burden on citizens.

“Unfortunately, these issues were not addressed in the economic policy. Those who were hoping for efforts to halt further increases in electricity bills were disappointed to learn that electricity prices would instead be adjusted every quarter. This quarterly adjustment, with no policy intervention from the NDC government, will result in an increase in electricity tariffs every quarter,” they stated.

The Minority NPP MPs further disclosed that the government had removed subsidies on gas prices, which they argued would contribute to a rise in the base rate and an overall increase in energy prices.

They criticized the government for failing to provide alternatives to mitigate the impact of rising electricity tariffs.

“Worse still, the government has secretly removed subsidies on gas prices, thereby increasing the weighted average cost of gas from $7.8 to $8.4 per MMBtu. This means that not only will energy prices rise, but they will do so at a higher base rate from now on. There is no hope of resetting energy pricing,” they added.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, presented the 2025 budget in Parliament on March 11, 2025.

“I apologise to the youth” – Patrick Boamah to Ghanaians over fmr. Finance Minister’s betting tax comments

Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has apologized to the public after former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam’s statement about the previous government not implementing the betting tax sparked controversy.

He clarified that the minister’s remarks were misunderstood due to a communication issue, which the New Patriotic Party (NPP) intends to address soon.

Speaking in an interview with Lawson TV, Boamah stressed that the former minister did not make a mistake but that the way the message was conveyed led to confusion.

“There is an issue, and we will delve into it by explaining our position. I don’t speak for him, but I believe there was a communication gap, which I hope he will address in his engagement with the press. I apologise to the youth for the miscommunication.

“We have betting, casinos, football bets, and more. The 10% withholding tax on gaming, often referred to as the betting tax, exists. However, the tax on winnings, which Amin Adam sought to explain, was never implemented,” he said.

    Background

During the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement on March 11, 2025, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced that the 10% tax on bet winnings would be removed, pending approval from Parliament.

However, Dr. Amin Adam later spoke to the media in Parliament, accusing the government of misleading the public by claiming to remove a tax that was never actually enforced.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, the betting tax that they said they had abolished, we never collected. We never implemented the betting tax, so to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that was never implemented is to deceive the people of Ghana,” he stated.

“As a passionate football supporter, I am excited to have the opportunity to become a shareholder in Melbourne Victory, one of the most successful clubs in A-League history,” Bloom said in a statement.

“My investment reflects my confidence in the club’s vision and leadership, and I see tremendous potential in the club for further growth and success, both on and off the pitch.

Bloom’s investment comes just a week after Melbourne Victory cut its final ties with 777 Partners, a failed investment firm that once considered buying Everton. The club announced that it had reached a deal with creditors A-Cap to fully separate from the 19.9% stake that 777 Partners previously held.

Support us, we have difficult matches ahead – Otto Addo to Ghanaians ahead of 2026 World Cup qualifiers

Otto Addo has stressed the importance of the Black Stars winning their next qualifiers to keep their chances of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive.

Ghana, a four-time African champion, will regroup later this month for two key matches against Chad and Madagascar in the qualifiers.

After a disappointing performance in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, where the team failed to win a game, Otto Addo visited the Ga Mantse on Wednesday, March 12, to ask for support. He emphasized that securing positive results is crucial for Ghana to qualify for the World Cup for the fifth time.

“We came to seek your support and guidance,” the 49-year-old stated.

“We have difficult matches ahead of us, and the country needs urgent victories to qualify for the World Cup. For that, I believe we need to support ourselves, especially the Ga chiefs and the entire people, so that everybody can be happy,” he added.

The Black Stars are currently tied at the top of Group I with Comoros, both having nine points. They recently secured consecutive wins against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR) in the qualifiers.

Ghana will take on Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, at 19:00 GMT. After that, they will travel to Morocco to face Madagascar at the Grand Stade d’Al Hoceima on Monday, March 24.

YEA CEO Malik Basintale clarifies the rationale behind introducing two job apps

Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has justified the agency’s decision to launch two separate mobile apps to enhance job opportunities in Ghana.

His response follows public concerns about why two different apps were created instead of one.

Speaking on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Mr. Basintale clarified that each app has a unique purpose and is meant to serve different needs.

“The first app is specifically for artisans and skilled workers such as plumbers, carpenters, tailors, masons, and electricians. This platform will make it easier for individuals and businesses to connect with professionals, both locally and internationally,” he posted on Facebook.

He added that the initiative is part of YEA’s plans to create job opportunities abroad through a new directorate, which will be launched in the coming days.

According to Mr Basintale, the app for artisans is being developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). “YEA’s role is to provide trained skilled workers, while the private partner will manage the platform. This is expected to create over 100,000 jobs in the informal sector,” he noted.

The second app, he said, is YEA’s own Job Centre, which will link job seekers with employers across various industries. Unlike the first app, which focuses on artisans, the Job Center will serve a wider range of job seekers.

“This app will be easy to use, so anyone in Ghana can search for jobs without needing IT expertise,” Mr Basintale assured.

He also stressed that both apps will not cost YEA anything, addressing concerns about potential financial burdens on the agency.

  • Show us where you have cut costs in your budget – Oppong-Nkrumah challenges govt

Show us where you have cut costs in your budget – Oppong-Nkrumah challenges govt

Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi and former Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has criticized the Mahama government for not reducing its spending, despite saying it would.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, he argued that instead of cutting costs, the NDC government actually increased its expenditure from GHC 250 billion to GHC 291 billion.

“There has been no cut in the budget. When you look at the numbers, you’ll see that the government is spending more, not less.” he said.

He went on to explain that under the NPP, the government spent GHC 327 million for 8 agencies, but now, the NDC is allocating GHC 2.7 billion to compensation in its budget.

“This money can even be used to build Agenda 111 hospitals and banks. But instead, it’s being used for something else,” he said.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah further criticized the allocation of GHC 50 million just for research under the Office of Government Machinery.

“They claim they have cut costs, but they need to show us where the cuts are. Just saying it won’t work. They need to be transparent,” he added.

The MP also raised concerns about the reduction in the number of agencies under the government machinery.

“When they were in power, we had 8 agencies. Now, they are left with only 4, and they want to explain this as a cut?” he questioned.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah also responded to claims that NDC members were still seeking government jobs. He stated that the government had no intention of rehiring them but had significantly increased compensation at the Jubilee House from GHC 300 million to GHC 2.7 billion.

Meanwhile, the government has set a target of 4.4% GDP growth for 2025, adjusted for inflation.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced this while presenting the 2025 Budget. He highlighted the government’s renewed commitment to controlling spending and implementing structural reforms.

  • ECG has 3,000 containers held at Port for over 5 years – Energy Minister

ECG has 3,000 containers held at Port for over 5 years – Energy Minister

Energy Minister John Jinapor has disclosed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has several containers filled with essential materials, including transformers, stuck at the port. This situation is costing the company billions of cedis.

Speaking about the ongoing power outages, he explained that some of these transformers are needed to replace overloaded ones across the country.

However, they have been held at the port for so long that nearly half of their 10-year lifespan has already been wasted.

“When we took over, I visited the Tema Harbour and found about 3,000 containers stuck there, most of which contain transformers. As of today, ECG has a total liability of 13 billion cedis from supplies, with demurrage alone projected to reach GH₵1.5 billion by the end of 2024,” he stated.

The minister also revealed that in 2024, the Ministry of Energy awarded contracts worth GH₵6 billion without securing commencement certificates, even though its total budget for the year was less than GH₵2 billion. Meanwhile, ECG’s financial commitments for electricity supply in that same year reached GH₵9.7 billion.

“These are the facts,” he emphasised.
Mr Jinapor assured that the government would take decisive action to resolve these issues and ensure the efficient use of resources in the energy sector, adding that the Energy Ministry has set up a committee to investigate procurement anomalies and breaches.

Government allocates over GHC 146 million to Office of the Special Prosecutor

The government of John Dramani Mahama has reportedly set aside over GH¢146 million for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

This information comes from a report by Accra-based GHOne TV. In a post on X on Tuesday, March 12, 2025, the media outlet stated that Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the allocation.

A flyer attached to the post had a picture of the finance minister with the inscription, “Government allocates ₵146.75 million to Office of the Special Prosecutor.”

This announcement comes following suggestions of the OSP being scrapped by the Mahama government.

The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has called for the scrapping of the OSP, stating that nothing would come out of it.

According to him, the OSP has not been able to successfully prosecute a single person despite the numerous corruption scandals the country has seen since its creation.

Asiedu Nketiah, in an interview on Okay FM, suggested that the OSP should be scrapped and its resources used to separate the Office of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Justice because an independent Attorney General is key to fighting corruption and not a Special Prosecutor.

“If the Constitution is not amended for new laws, the Special Prosecutor will remain ineffective in prosecuting people. All of the expenditure on the OSP has no benefit. We should cancel it and focus on splitting the Attorney General’s Office from the Ministry of Justice,” he said in the Twi dialect.

Mahama Cares: Gov’t launches Ghana Medical Care Trust

Government, through the Ministry of Health, on Wednesday, March 12 launched the Ghana Medical Care Trust, also known as Mahama Cares, as part of President John Mahama’s campaign promise.

This program is designed to support people with chronic illnesses like kidney failure, diabetes, and other serious health conditions.

At the launch event, Health Minister Kwabena Minta Akandoh said the initiative was long overdue. He pointed to World Health Organization (WHO) data showing that non-communicable diseases cause 42% of all deaths in Ghana.

“Cardiovascular diseases alone make up 90% of these cases, while cancers account for 5%. Many of these deaths could be prevented if people had access to treatment, but the high cost makes it impossible for many,” he said.

The Minister recognized the importance of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in providing healthcare but stressed the need to include specialized treatments.

To fill this gap, he stated that Mahama Cares would provide financial support to individuals suffering from chronic illnesses.

Former Director of Health Services, Dr. Koku Awoonor, praised the initiative, saying it would bring relief to many families struggling with medical expenses.

Non-communicable diseases put a heavy strain on families both psychologically and financially. Today’s event signals a new approach to making treatment more accessible,” he said.

    About Mahama Cares

The “Mahama Cares” initiative, officially known as the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, was launched by the government to provide financial support for individuals suffering from chronic diseases such as cancer, kidney failure, and heart conditions. This initiative, introduced by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to ease the financial burden of treatment and improve access to healthcare for affected individuals.

The initiative addresses a significant gap in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which does not cover many specialized treatments. To guide the fund’s operations, the government has inaugurated the Mahama Cares Technical Taskforce, a team of experts responsible for developing policies, creating a funding structure, and setting eligibility criteria for beneficiaries. The task force is chaired by Reverend Professor Emeritus Seth Aryeetey, a former provost of the College of Health Science

2025 budget: Finance Minister details why sports was not captured

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that ministers from various sectors, including sports, will now brief Parliament on their work at scheduled times.

He explained that this approach allows ministers to give a clear update on their sectors and outline steps being taken to enhance performance.

As a result, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, will later present a report on sports, though the exact date has not been set.

Dr. Forson added that this new system aims to ease the burden on the finance minister and speed up the reporting process.

“Sector ministers will present to this house a detailed sectorial performance and outlook, as well as specific sector interventions to address the challenges of various MDAs.

This is a departure from the norm, where finance ministers present detailed sectorial performance as part of their budget speech. I believe sector ministers must be made to do so,” he said.

Dr. Ato Forson made this announcement during the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy on March 11, 2025.

This addresses concerns some sports fans and stakeholders raised about why sporting issues were omitted from the 2025 budget reading, which deviates from previous practices.

His tenure will last four years, from 2025 to 2029.

Okraku was elected unopposed and will now be part of the 24-member committee responsible for overseeing African football.

His appointment reflects recognition of his leadership at the GFA, where he has prioritized transparency, grassroots football, women’s football, and youth development since taking charge in 2019.

With Ghana’s strong football tradition, his role on the CAF EXCO is expected to strengthen the country’s influence in shaping football policies across Africa.

He now joins a distinguished list of Ghanaians who have served on the committee, including Ohene Djan, Kobina Hagan, Nana Fredua Mensah, Samuel Okyere, and Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Meanwhile, Okraku’s journey in football administration began with his involvement in club football. He was the Executive Chairman of Dreams FC, a club he helped establish and develop.

His success at the club level paved the way for his election as GFA President, where he has focused on revitalizing domestic football, enhancing youth development, and promoting women’s football.

“Genuinely, I have no idea at the moment” – Van Dijk on future at Liverpool

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has admitted he is uncertain about his future at the club beyond this season.

The Dutch defender is among three key players, alongside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contracts expire at the end of the campaign, with no new agreements in place yet.

Van Dijk has played a crucial role in Liverpool’s title push, helping them build a 15-point lead at the top of the Premier League with just 10 matches remaining. He has been a consistent presence in the squad, featuring in every game for one of the league’s strongest defences.

Despite their impressive domestic form, Liverpool’s Champions League journey ended in disappointment on Tuesday, as they were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the round of 16.

“I have no idea. I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely. I have no idea at the moment,” Van Dijk said post-match when asked about his future at Anfield.

“It is not on hold. Nothing on hold. There’s just … I keep saying the same thing.

“Listen, there are ten games to go, and that is my full focus. If there is news, you guys will know it. I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it.

“At the moment, I don’t even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face.”
Liverpool can clinch their first piece of silverware of the season this weekend when they face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday. Van Dijk will hope to replicate his heroics from last year’s final, where he scored the winner in extra-time against Chelsea.

  • Raphina says team win against Benfica an honor to late team doctor Miñarro

Raphina says team win against Benfica an honor to late team doctor Miñarro

Barcelona forward Raphinha said the team was even more determined to perform well in their Champions League match against Benfica following the passing of club doctor Carles Miñarro.

Raphinha, who has now scored 27 goals in all competitions this season, netted twice as Barcelona secured a 3-1 win at the Olympic Stadium, sealing a 4-1 aggregate victory to reach the quarterfinals.

The match took place just three days after Miñarro’s sudden passing, which led to the postponement of Barcelona’s LaLiga game against Osasuna on Saturday. The 53-year-old’s cause of death has not yet been officially disclosed.

“We came into this game even more determined to win after the passing of Carles,” Raphinha told reporters after the game.

Barça coach Hansi Flick also dedicated the success to Miñarro.

“I said before the match we wanted to honor the memory of Carles,” Flick said in the post game news conference. “After what happened, I think it’s good to win for him. Carles is always with us. It’s like that. He has always a place in our team.”

To honor Carles Miñarro’s passing, the Spanish, Catalan, and Barcelona flags were flown at half-mast at the stadium, and a minute of silence was held before the match began.

Barcelona secured their place in the Champions League quarterfinals for the second year in a row with a dominant first-half performance, scoring three goals and extending their unbeaten streak to 17 games in all competitions.

Raphinha put Barça ahead early, thanks to an assist from Lamine Yamal, but Benfica quickly responded as Nicolás Otamendi equalized from a corner kick.

Yamal restored Barça’s lead with a stunning individual effort, before Raphinha added the third on the stroke of halftime.
“I am really happy with that,” Flick said of his team’s display and their control in the second half. “Benfica are a really good team. I knew they make good transitions, but we control the ball, we control the game, we were dominant.

“This was good to see. I think we could score more goals, but we are happy that we are in the quarterfinal.”

At 17 years and 241 days old, Lamine Yamal became the second-youngest player to score in a Champions League knockout match, with former Barcelona forward Bojan Krkic still holding the record as the youngest.

Yamal’s stunning curling shot from the edge of the box marked his 12th goal of the season across all competitions. However, it was his first time scoring in seven games.

“Great,” Flick added of Yamal ending his mini-drought. “I think everyone was looking for this goal and it’s good for him, it gives him self-confidence.

“It was at the right time this goal happens. I am happy for him that he scored again.”

However, despite Yamal’s goal and assist and Raphinha moving on to a tournament high 11 goals in the Champions League this season, midfielder Pedri claimed UEFA’s MVP trophy.

“He’s 100% fit and it’s good to see what he’s doing with the ball, but also without the ball is unbelievable,” Flick said of Pedri. “He’s in the right position at the moment and, for me, in this position, he’s the best in the world.”

Barcelona will face either Borussia Dortmund or Lille in the Champions League quarterfinals. They are also leading LaLiga with a game in hand and have secured a spot in the Copa del Rey semifinals.

Raphinha believes the team has the potential to accomplish great things this season.

“We are candidates to win every competition,” he said. “We knew that Benfica would come here strong, but we knew what we had to do to win the game and focused on that.

“We had the result in our favor from the first leg and did really well tonight, it was an especially good first half.”

Man Utd’s CEO warns funds for a new stadium could affect player signings

Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada said there was a risk the club’s investment in a new two billion pound ($2.58 billion) stadium could impact spending on the squad and affect competitiveness for the next five years.

United sit 14th in the Premier League after finishing eighth last season and face a critical balancing act between infrastructure upgrades and on-field ambitions.

“That is a risk. Clearly it’s something we want to avoid,” Berrada told reporters on Tuesday at the unveiling of conceptual images of the new stadium.

“We don’t want to inhibit our ability to invest in the team, for us to continue being competitive while we are building a new stadium.”

Berrada said that the club would make every effort to remain competitive over the period required to build their 100,000-seat stadium that will be the biggest in Britain, next to the existing Old Trafford.

“There are various ways around that; one of the things we are looking at is to shorten the construction timelines so we can have a new stadium within five years, that’s our ambition.”

    About the stadium

Manchester United has unveiled plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium, which will be the largest in the UK. The new stadium will be constructed next to the existing Old Trafford site, allowing the club to preserve the essence of their historic home while creating a state-of-the-art facility. The project is part of a broader regeneration effort for the Old Trafford area, which aims to bring significant social and economic benefits to the community.

The new stadium is estimated to cost around £2 billion and will feature an umbrella design that harvests solar energy and rainwater. The construction process is expected to take five years, during which Manchester United will continue to play at Old Trafford. The project is anticipated to create thousands of jobs and new homes, as well as attract millions of visitors annually

Incredible performance, the best game I have been a part of – Slot on loss to PSG

Liverpool manager Arne Slot called his team’s Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain “the best game of football I’ve been involved in,” despite the disappointing result.

After a 1-0 defeat in the first leg in Paris, Liverpool needed a strong performance at Anfield. However, PSG extended their advantage early when Ousmane Dembélé scored in the 12th minute.

Liverpool created several scoring chances but failed to find the net, pushing the match into extra time. With no goals in the additional minutes, the game was decided by a penalty shootout.

PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made crucial saves against Darwin Núñez and Curtis Jones, while Desire Doué scored the decisive penalty, giving PSG a 4-1 victory in the shootout and ending Liverpool’s Champions League campaign.

“It was the best game of football I have ever been involved in,” Slot said on Amazon Prime.

“It was an incredible performance, especially if you compare it with last week. Maybe we ran out of luck because the margins were so small.

“We played the perfect game, except for scoring a goal. It was similar to Paris last week, when they played the perfect game and didn’t score. And then in extra time, they were maybe a little bit better.”

Liverpool still has two domestic trophies to chase despite their Champions League exit.

They are almost guaranteed to win the Premier League, holding a comfortable 15-point lead at the top of the table. Additionally, they have a chance to secure silverware when they face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

“We were pretty good and you want to go as far as possible, but we knew when we drew Paris that it was going to be very difficult,” admitted Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

“In Paris, we struggled but we won. Today we saw a very good Liverpool side, but we’re out of the competition.”

Scotland left-back Andy Robertson said the focus will turn to Newcastle now as he added: “It wasn’t meant to be and we need to dust ourselves down. We always bounce back, there’s a lot of tired legs in there. Cup finals, we enjoy them, and that’s the biggest game.”

PSG boss Luis Enrique felt Liverpool were unlucky as he said: “Both of the teams deserve to go to the next phase.

“They played better than us here, but I think my team at Anfield, in a special stadium showed great personality and character.

“I think it shows clearly the team we are.”

South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe has secured another term as the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Running unopposed, he was officially re-elected during CAF’s 14th extraordinary general assembly held in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday.

Motsepe, ranked as Africa’s ninth richest person, will continue leading the continent’s football governing body for another four years. He first assumed the role in 2021, making history as CAF’s first English-speaking president. He took over from Ahmad Ahmad, who was removed from office in 2020 due to financial misconduct.

During Motsepe’s tenure, African football has seen significant financial improvements. The prize money for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) increased by over 40% to $7 million, and both the men’s and women’s CAF Champions League rewards were also raised.

Additionally, he played a key role in launching the African Football League (AFL), originally planned to feature 24 teams with a $100 million budget. However, the competition started with just eight teams, and South African club Mamelodi Sundowns won the inaugural edition in 2023.

Patrice Motsepe, a South African billionaire, was first elected as the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 2021. During his tenure, he has overseen significant achievements, including a financial turnaround for CAF, which was struggling after the termination of its $1 billion TV rights deal1.

Under his leadership, CAF has settled past debts, increased prize money for its competitions, and enhanced financial support for member associations. The recent Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast drew a record global audience of 2 billion viewers and reported a $72 million profit1.

Motsepe was re-elected for a second four-year term in March 2025, following an uncontested election at the 14th CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo, Egypt.
