Dede Ayew misses out on Otto Addo’s squad again – Coach explains

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has clarified his decision to exclude captain Andre Ayew, stating that his priority is to develop a team for the future.

The coach, trained in Germany, highlighted his commitment to building a squad from a younger pool of players, which led to Ayew’s omission from the current lineup.

“We are looking at the future or the long-term development, that’s mainly why we invited younger players and left out André Ayew.”

Andre Ayew has now been excluded from the Black Stars squad for the third consecutive time, with his last call-up dating back to late 2023.

In addition to the former Swansea City player, other notable absentees from the squad include Salis Samed, Daniel Amartey, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Ernest Nuamah, Denis Odoi, and Gideon Mensah.

On Thursday, August 29, 2024, Otto Addo announced his 23-man squad, which features 3 goalkeepers, 8 defenders, 5 midfielders, and 7 forwards.

The Black Stars are set to face Angola in Kumasi on September 5, 2024, before travelling to play Niger on September 9.

GFA to renew betPawa’s sponsorship deal for GPL – Randy Abbey reveals

Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Dr. Randy Abbey, has announced that efforts are underway to renew the sponsorship agreement with betPawa for the Ghana Premier League.

betPawa, which served as the primary sponsor for the league, withdrew from the contract during the 2023/24 season.

He further indicated that the GFA has successfully engaged in renegotiations with betPawa, and a new sponsorship deal is expected to be finalized and announced shortly.

“Well, it’s a partnership that was signed for one year; there was the expression to renew from both parties, and we have gone far,” he told Joy Sports.

“I can say that we have almost concluded negotiations, and I’m sure that in the next few days, both parties will announce the details, so we are renewing for another year,” he added.

2025 AFCON Qualifiers: Inaki Williams named in Black Stars squad for Angola, Niger games

Iñaki Williams has been named in the Black Stars’ squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Athletic Bilbao forward, who missed Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic in June due to a foot injury, is set to make his return following successful surgery.

Despite Williams’ absence, the Black Stars achieved back-to-back victories in those World Cup qualifiers.

Since his recovery, Williams has returned to form, playing against Getafe, Barcelona, and Valencia in Athletic Bilbao’s opening La Liga matches of the season.

Ghana will face Palancas Negras at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5 and will then travel to Niger for their second qualifier on September 9.

Coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his final squad for these fixtures today. Notably, no players from the Ghana Premier League have been included in this squad.

The Black Stars are determined to secure one of the top two positions in Group F to advance to the AFCON tournament, which is scheduled to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

Kudus assists in West Ham’s EFL Cup 1-0 win over Bournemouth

Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus played a crucial role in West Ham’s 1-0 triumph over Bournemouth in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

Entering the game in the 74th minute as a substitute for Niclas Füllkrug, Kudus made an immediate impact by providing an assist in the 88th minute, setting up Jarrod Bowen for the game-winning goal.

The match was closely contested, with Bournemouth dominating possession while West Ham managed more shots on target.

Despite Bournemouth’s control of the ball, their inability to capitalise on opportunities was ultimately their downfall.

Kudus’ late assist was decisive, and the absence of VAR meant that Bournemouth had no chance to overturn the result.

This victory extends West Ham’s unbeaten record against Bournemouth to seven wins, while Bournemouth has secured five wins and five draws in their encounters.

Looking ahead, West Ham will face reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at home on Saturday, while Bournemouth will visit Everton at Goodison Park on the same day.

  • Video: Brazilians upset at CR7 over alleged jab at Pele over 1000 goals claim

Video: Brazilians upset at CR7 over alleged jab at Pele over 1000 goals claim

Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has sparked a backlash from Brazilians on social media following his comments about Brazil’s football legend Pelé and his record of 1,000 career goals.

In a recent conversation with former teammate Rio Ferdinand, Ronaldo revealed that his goal is to score 900 career goals, with the ambition of reaching 1,000 if he surpasses the 900-goal mark.

He emphasised that, unlike previous players who have claimed to reach the 1,000-goal milestone, he intends to have video evidence to substantiate his achievement.

Ronaldo’s remarks have been interpreted by many as a subtle jab at Pelé’s legendary record, leading to a wave of criticism from fans in Brazil.

“The best mark that I reach is first reaching 900 goals. After, my challenge is to reach 1000 goals with one difference: all the goals I have scored have videos. So I can prove that I have scored 1000 goals,” he said on his YouTube channel UR Cristiano.

“I respect all of them, but there are videos of my goals, and if you have a problem, I can bring videos from training too. And I will prove to the people. After they prefer this or that player as the best, I don’t care about that.”

Pelé remains the only footballer officially recognised for scoring 1,000 career goals, making Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent comments a point of contention among Brazilian fans.

Ronaldo’s remarks, made during a chat with former teammate Rio Ferdinand, seemed to suggest a challenge to this historic milestone.

Many in Brazil have taken offence, interpreting Ronaldo’s statements as dismissive of Pelé’s achievement.

Some critics argue that his comments were unnecessary and have fuelled animosity towards him.

However, Ronaldo’s supporters contend that his remarks were meant to be taken with a sense of humour and sarcasm rather than as a direct challenge to Pelé’s legendary record.

Cristiano is always the first to complain about how the media hates him yet he throws shade like this towards greats of the past who achieved more than him.

  • Central Bank of Liberia responds to Ablakwa’s claims over 20m dollars transfer to BoG

Central Bank of Liberia responds to Ablakwa’s claims over 20m dollars transfer to BoG

Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) has addressed the controversy regarding the recent transfer of US$20 million to Ghana’s central bank, the Bank of Ghana (BoG), following the disclosure of the documents by North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

In a statement released on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, and reviewed by GhanaWeb, the CBL confirmed that it is the rightful owner of the transferred funds.

The statement clarified that the US$20 million was sent to the BoG as part of an ongoing agreement under which the Bank of Ghana provides overnight custody for Liberia’s cash imports.

“The importation of United States dollars is part of the Bank’s normal function, which is required to meet the needs of the economy, including the USD withdrawal demands and needs of the Government of Liberia and the commercial banks.

“CBL and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) have a long-standing Cash Custody Agreement executed for the BoG to provide overnight custody for CBL imported cash when shipped from London by Travelex Currency, which is an international currency shipment company,” part of the statement reads.

It added, “These cash shipments by flights are cleared through both the Ghana and Liberia Customs, thus validating their legitimate sources.

The CBL once again emphasises its commitment to transparency and accountability and encourages the media to always reach out to the Bank to verify any information about the Bank’s operations before publication.”

    Background:

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, has raised serious concerns regarding a US$20 million transfer to the Bank of Ghana, citing discrepancies in the documentation.

On August 27, 2024, Ablakwa posted on X about the situation, revealing that the US$20 million, which was cleared by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), is intended for the Central Bank of Liberia.

According to Ablakwa, while official documents sent to the GRA indicate that the funds have been deposited with the Bank of Ghana for safekeeping until they can be transferred to Liberia, other documents from the Bank of Ghana suggest a different story.

Ablakwa is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the funds are indeed forwarded to Liberia as intended and not retained by the Bank of Ghana as some documents might imply.

“I am keenly tracking the movement of some US$20 million cash which arrived in Ghana via KIA this afternoon. The cash has since been cleared by officials of the Bank of Ghana.

The Bank of Ghana must offer explanations on why supporting documents are not consistent with the content of its August 21, 2024, letter to customs and airport officials seeking to clear the uncirculated banknotes.

“Even though the Bank of Ghana claims the money was ordered by the central bank of Liberia and that the cash will be re-exported to Monrovia whenever there is an available flight, other intercepted documents, including an airway bill indicate emphatically that the consignee is the Bank of Ghana and not the central bank of Liberia.

He added, “My international partners and I will keep tracking this US$20 million cash from London to confirm if indeed the fresh banknotes will be transferred to Liberia, when the transfer will be carried out, and if the full amount will be transferred.”

The MP shared a document from the Bank of Ghana asking the GRA to clear the US$20 million, stating that it would be transferred to Liberia later.

He also shared an airline bill, which is supposed to show that the US$20 million belongs to the Bank of Ghana.

Awula Serwaa calls for withdrawal of Mining L.I. permitting forest mining

Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwaa is advocating for the urgent repeal of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which permits mining activities in forest reserves.

The environmentalist argues that the irreversible damage caused by such activities far outweighs any potential benefits.

“We should get the withdrawal of L.I. 2462. Parliament has passed this L.I. which allows mining in forest reserves, so that law should be withdrawn,” she said.

Her call comes in response to reports of a yet-to-be identified miner said to have encroached on the Draw River Forest Reserve, one of Ghana’s key protected forests located at Gwira Banso in the Nzema East District of the Western Region.

The reports indicate that part of the forest has been cleared, and excavators have been moved to the site, signalling the potential start of illegal mining activities that could lead to significant forest degradation.

Madam Serwaa criticised the issuance of permits for mining in areas of significant biodiversity. She questioned the rationale behind such decisions.

“You have Legislative Instrument 2462 allowing mining in forest reserves, including globally significant biodiversity areas like the Draw River Forest Reserve, which has been a protected area since 1964. Who in his right sense would issue an entry permit to go there?”

She also expressed disappointment with political parties, noting their failure to address this issue in their manifestos ahead of the upcoming December general elections.

Madam Serwaa urged all political parties to commit to repealing L.I. 2462, which she views as enabling environmental degradation in Ghana’s forest reserves.

ECG begins replacing old meters with smart meters

Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has launched a project to upgrade outdated electricity meters in the Accra East region to modern Smart MMS-compliant prepaid meters.

Scheduled from September 2 to September 30, 2024, the initiative targets key districts like Makola, Teshie, and Adentan, aiming to replace 250,000 meters.

This move, driven by a directive from the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC), seeks to improve service delivery and address revenue losses of over GH¢893 million caused by faulty meters not accurately recording electricity consumption.

“These are meters that have run their due course. They were not working accurately and needed to be replaced. Once the replacement was completed, we expect the situation to stabilise, thereby improving the company’s revenue fortunes,” he is quoted by myjoyonline.com.

William Boateng has highlighted the urgent need to replace outdated meters with new Smart MMS-compliant prepaid meters.

He explained that the old meters were failing to provide accurate readings, which was impacting the company’s revenue and overall stability.

The new prepaid meters are designed to enhance reliability and efficiency. They come with advanced features that allow customers to top up their credits remotely via the ECG Power App or by dialing the short code (*226#).

This upgrade aims to make it easier and more flexible for users to manage their electricity usage.

This meter replacement initiative is part of the ECG’s Loss Reduction Project (LRP), which is focused on minimizing technical and commercial losses while boosting operational efficiency.

ECG has assured customers that any remaining credit on their old meters will be seamlessly transferred to their new smart meters.

Additionally, the replacement process will be conducted at no cost to the customers, and Boateng warned against paying anyone for the meter swap.

Boateng expressed optimism that this upgrade will enhance ECG’s financial performance, despite the current revenue challenges.

BoG slams Ablakwa over $20m transfer claims, quizzes his attitude as an MP

Bank of Ghana has addressed concerns raised by MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa regarding a $20 million transfer he questioned for inconsistent documentation.

In a statement dated Wednesday, August 28, the central bank criticised Ablakwa’s allegations, clarifying that the funds were designated for the Central Bank of Liberia, as previously disclosed.

While the statement didn’t explicitly name Ablakwa, it expressed disappointment over his decision to publicly share documents related to the transfer, implying that such actions were inappropriate and potentially misleading.

Bank of Ghana has addressed concerns raised by MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa regarding a $20 million transfer, clarifying that the funds were part of an agreement with the Central Bank of Liberia.

The bank criticised the public sharing of sensitive documents, calling it “unfortunate” and raising security concerns.

They emphasised that the transfer was executed according to standard procedures and assured the public that there was no misconduct involved.

The bank also urged caution when handling sensitive financial matters to avoid unnecessary alarms and risks.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Bank of Ghana has had a long-standing currency transfer arrangement with the Central Bank of Liberia since 2004, and per this agreement, the Bank of Ghana receives imported currency on behalf of the Central Bank of Liberia for re-export to Monrovia.

The said Uncirculated Banknotes mentioned in the social media discussions on August 27 are part of this long-standing arrangement.

When all logistical arrangements, including scheduled flights, are finalised, these would be re-exported to the Central Bank of Liberia.

“As part of administrative processes and security protocols, all relevant stakeholders are officially informed of the entry and exit of consignments related to this arrangement.

Unless there is mischief intended, there was no reason for this matter to have become an issue for public discussion,” part of the statement stated.

“Currency management is a sensitive operation and has security implications; therefore, it is unfortunate that a lawmaker would circulate such sensitive procedural and administrative clearance letters involving another sovereign nation in a bid to misinform and disinform the public and attach a narrative that seeks to suggest some wrongdoing on the part of the Bank of Ghana.”

The arrangement between the Bank of Ghana and the Central Bank of Liberia signifies mutual trust between the two countries and a testament to the strong bond of friendship between Accra and Monrovia,” the statement added.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the North Tongu MP, raised concerns about a $20 million transfer to the Bank of Ghana, questioning the consistency of related documentation.

He pointed out that while Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) documents indicated the funds were for safekeeping before being transferred to the Central Bank of Liberia, records from the Bank of Ghana suggested a different story.

Ablakwa is monitoring the situation to ensure the funds are properly transferred to Liberia and not retained by the Bank of Ghana as claimed.

His remarks came after NPP supporters taunted him with references to the “V8 saga” during his speech. Dumelo has since retracted his statements and expressed regret for his unfounded claims.

He said, “I want to say something. I can see their supporters have been mentioning V8, V8, V8. If that is the case, then it is also fair to say that maybe Lydia is the one who killed her husband to become MP.

Emi Martinez ‘admits’ Partey is one of the best midfielders in EPL

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has praised Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey, labelling him as one of the top midfielders in the Premier League.

Martinez’s admiration for Partey was evident after the Arsenal player scored a crucial goal in their match against Villa on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Reflecting on the goal he allowed, Martinez admitted that he didn’t react with full force because he didn’t immediately recognize that it was Partey who took the shot.

The Argentine keeper acknowledged the power and precision of Partey’s strike, further cementing his respect for the Arsenal star’s abilities on the pitch.

“I tried my best to save it. I didn’t know it was a shot from Partey until I raised my head after the ball went in. He’s one of the best midfielders in the league,” the 2022 World Cup winner said.

Thomas Partey sealed the win with a brilliant strike from outside the box, placing the ball perfectly into the bottom right corner in a 2-0 victory. Although Martinez got a hand to it, he couldn’t prevent the goal.

This marked Partey’s first goal of the season as Arsenal secured their second win of the new campaign.

Chelsea presents official bid for Osimhen; Lukaku readies for Napoli move

Chelsea have reportedly made an official bid for Victor Osimhen as Romelu Lukaku prepares to finalize his move to Napoli.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Blues have submitted an offer to Osimhen’s agent, Roberto Calenda, and are set to begin formal negotiations with Napoli on Wednesday.

It remains uncertain whether the three parties will reach an agreement, but the Nigerian forward has already expressed his desire to leave the Serie A club.

As discussions for Osimhen’s transfer to Stamford Bridge continue, Lukaku is on the brink of joining Napoli. He is expected to arrive in Naples shortly to undergo a medical before signing a permanent contract with the club.

Meanwhile, Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli has also made a lucrative offer to Osimhen, but his agent Calenda has made it clear on social media that the striker has no intention of leaving Europe at this stage of his career.

Chelsea are eager to secure a top-quality striker before the transfer window closes on Friday. While progress is being made in their pursuit of Osimhen, the club has identified Brentford’s Ivan Toney as an alternative option should they fail to land the Napoli star.

  • “If you know, you know” – Asamoah Gyan on being named the flashiest player by English coach

“If you know, you know” – Asamoah Gyan on being named the flashiest player by English coach

Former Sunderland forward, Asamoah Gyan, has reacted to a recent remark by English coach Steve Bruce, who described Gyan as the most flamboyant player he has managed throughout his career.

Steve Bruce, who was at the helm of Sunderland during the 2010/2011 season when Gyan played there on loan, has fondly recalled Gyan’s distinctive style.

According to Bruce, Gyan stood out as the most stylish player he has ever coached.

Gyan’s fashion-forward approach evidently made a memorable impact on Bruce, who highlights Gyan’s unique flair as a standout characteristic from his time at Sunderland.

“Without question, we had a kid called Asamoah Gyan who we signed at Sunderland,” he said in a TikTok Q&A challenge.

Asamoah Gyan took to X (formerly Twitter) to respond to the claim by Steve Bruce, stating, “If you know, you know.”

Asamoah Gyan signed a four-year contract with Sunderland in the summer of 2010. However, less than a year later, he moved on loan to Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates.

This loan move eventually became a permanent transfer, with Gyan officially joining the UAE club.

While initial reports suggested that Gyan pushed for an exit from Sunderland, he later clarified that he was, in fact, compelled to leave the club.

“When the offer came, it was just a loan deal, and they felt they needed that money so they made me go, and in the contract, it was stated that when the player decides to stay after the loan deal, they will offer a four-year permanent deal,” he told Pure FM in Kumasi.

“Sunderland thought I would go and come back because they needed the money at that time. However, when I went there, I was top scorer and my football improved.

So I assessed myself, something that would make me happy, and I fell in love with the place, so I decided to sign the extension.

“But when the deal actually came, I didn’t want to leave because I was the marksman and Darren Bent had left for Aston Villa, and I was the top man, scoring goals, and the fans loved me.

So when you look at all these things and let me leave and I also look at my personal terms and I feel it was good, and the club wanted me out, why not?

“They didn’t care about the fans, and if they turned a blind eye to all that I did and wanted to let me leave, why not.”

Jordan Ayew showcased his exceptional form once again, scoring a stunning goal and providing an assist in Leicester City’s commanding 4-0 win over Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.

Ayew’s brilliant strike from outside the penalty area in the 38th minute set the stage for Leicester’s dominant performance.

The game, held at the King Power Stadium, featured Ayew as the primary forward, while his compatriot Fatawu Issahaku joined the action as a substitute in the 82nd minute.

In addition to Ayew’s contributions, Stephy Mavididi netted a penalty in the 51st minute, Wilfred Ndidi scored in the 71st minute with an assist from Ayew, and Harry Winks added the final goal in the 90th minute following a corner kick.

With this victory, Leicester City looks ahead to their Premier League clash against Aston Villa on August 30, 2024, hoping to continue their strong form from this impressive cup performance.

The win also extended Leicester’s unbeaten record against Tranmere Rovers, maintaining a perfect record with one win and no losses.

Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah says he would like to play for Ghana

English footballer with Ghanaian roots, Eddie Nketiah, has expressed a willingness to represent the Black Stars, signalling a potential shift in his international allegiance.

The Arsenal forward has attracted interest from the Ghana Football Association, which has reportedly engaged in several discussions with him and his family about joining the Ghanaian national team.

Although Nketiah seemed to close the door on Ghanaian prospects when he was selected by former England manager Gareth Southgate in August 2023, recent developments suggest he may reconsider.

Despite his involvement with the England squad, Nketiah has struggled for playing time at Arsenal.

In a recent interview, the 25-year-old highlighted his connection to Ghana and revealed that he is open to playing for either Ghana or England, depending on the opportunities that arise.

“Obviously, my parents are both Ghanaians, and I’m from a Ghanaian heritage. It’s a possibility; I’m open to both, whether that’s playing for Ghana or England as well,” he said on the Beautiful Game podcast.

“I’ve played for the England youth teams, so obviously when I was younger they called me up to go and play for them.”

Eddie Nketiah is on the verge of leaving Arsenal, as the club has allowed him to undergo medical examinations with Crystal Palace.

The transfer is expected to be finalized with Crystal Palace paying £25 million, plus an additional £5 million in performance-related bonuses.

Nketiah, who rose through Arsenal’s youth ranks, is poised to make the move after being granted permission to discuss terms with his potential new club.

Almost 50% of pregnant women in Tema have been diagnosed with anaemia

Records from health facilities in Tema Metropolis for the first six months of the year reveal a concerning statistic: over 49 percent of pregnant women were found to be suffering from anemia by their 36th week of pregnancy.

Among these, 4.05 percent were classified as having severe anemia. Additionally, 37.55 percent of women were identified as anemic at their initial antenatal visit.

Samuel Atuahene Antwi, the Tema Metropolitan Nutritionist in an interview said, “Anaemia at 36 weeks of pregnancy increased by 84 per cent in 2024, as compared to 2023.”

Mr Antwi revealed that Tema Manhean recorded the highest increase of 31.3 percent in anaemia at 36 weeks from 23.16 to 72.4 per cent respectively for the 2023 and 2024 first halves.

He said 1,804 pregnant women received nutrition counselling and “only 30 percent of ANC attendants had their BMI checked to monitor their nutritional status.”

He stated that the high number of anaemic expectant mothers could be attributed to their intake of inadequate iron-rich foods, for which household food insecurity due to economic hardship could also be the cause.

However, a few of them who might have certain nutritious foods available did not take it because of some traditional and spiritual beliefs concerning those foods, he said.

Mr Antwi urged pregnant women to take adequate iron-rich foods such as red meat, liver, shrimp, fish, eggs, milk, and dark green leafy vegetables.

These should be consumed alongside oranges, pineapples, and other vitamin C-rich fruits to help absorb the iron.

Almost 50% of pregnant women in Tema have been diagnosed with anaemia.

  • More students cohabiting at universities – UCC study reveals

More students cohabiting at universities – UCC study reveals

A recent study by the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has revealed a significant rise in cohabitation among university students residing in private hostels.

This trend, characterised by living together and engaging in sexual relationships without marriage, is growing due to the increased freedom offered by these private accommodations, compared to the more regulated university halls.

The research also indicates that some students cohabit for economic reasons, pooling resources to share rental costs. While most students view cohabitation negatively, a small number see it as enjoyable and normal.

Additionally, the study highlights that this cohabitation trend is linked to higher rates of teenage pregnancy and child marriage.

Professor Georgina Yaa Oduro, Head of the Sociology and Anthropology Department at UCC, presented these findings at a workshop aimed at combating child marriage and gender-based violence.

The workshop, organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, was designed to enhance the understanding of traditional council registrars from eight regional houses of chiefs and the National House of Chiefs about these issues.

“If you are on campus and in the halls, you have the hall masters, tutors, and the hall council to control you. In the girls’ hostels, for example, guys cannot visit the halls after 10:00 PM,” Prof. Oduro said.

“But in the private hostels, comparatively, you have the freedom to do whatever you want.”

Professor Georgina Yaa Oduro from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) reported concerning findings from her study on cohabitation among university students in private hostels.

She revealed that students involved in these relationships are taking on all the responsibilities of married couples, including sexual activities and domestic chores such as cooking, cleaning, and managing finances.

The study highlighted that female students, in particular, are struggling to balance their academic responsibilities with the demands of these domestic roles, leading to missed or delayed lectures and negatively impacting their studies.

Furthermore, the study found that cohabitation among students often involves gender-based violence, including coerced sex, forced abortions, and frequent arguments, largely due to the unregulated nature of these relationships.

Professor Oduro shared a tragic case of a 22-year-old UCC student who took his own life this year following a dispute with his cohabiting partner.

She noted that many of these relationships dissolve after graduation and expressed concern over the lack of focus on this issue.

Professor Oduro called for a united effort from stakeholders—parents, educators, school administrators, and community and religious leaders—to address these challenges.

She also voiced alarm over the misuse of emergency contraceptives among young women and advised against their overuse.

GES reveals school selection dates for 2024 BECE candidates

Ghana Education Service (GES) has set the dates for the 2024 school placement process for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates.

The selection period will run from August 28 to September 4.

Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, Acting Director of the Schools and Instruction Division at GES, has called on parents and guardians to actively participate in this year’s school selection to ensure an efficient and effective placement process.

Candidates will be able to confirm their preferred school choices via a designated short code, with details to be shared soon. This step will precede the final placement process.

This announcement follows the conclusion of the 2024 BECE, which saw 570,461 students sitting for the exams from July 8 to 15 across Ghana.

The selection phase will enable students to choose their preferred Senior High Schools or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

Regional Education Directors have been directed to communicate the selection dates to relevant stakeholders, including local education authorities and exam officials, to facilitate a smooth process.

GES will also deploy officers from its headquarters to monitor the selection process across the country, ensuring compliance with all guidelines and maintaining transparency throughout.

  • NDC flags issues with voters register, demands forensic audit and Parliamentary probe

NDC flags issues with voters register, demands forensic audit and Parliamentary probe

Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has expressed serious concerns about the reliability of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) voters’ register in advance of the December 7 elections.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Boamah criticized the current register as being “unfit for purpose” and called for either a forensic audit or a comprehensive parliamentary investigation to address what he describes as “fundamentally flawed” issues.

He pointed out that the EC did not provide the NDC with the voters’ register in a timely manner before the exhibition period, suggesting that this delay was intentional.

Despite these challenges, Dr. Boamah commended the NDC’s meticulous review process during the exhibition, which has uncovered numerous problems with the register that could threaten the integrity of the 2024 elections if left unresolved.

“The register compiled by the EC is unfit for purpose.

Without a forensic audit or thorough parliamentary investigation of the EC’s voter register, the register will remain incurably defective,” he stated.

“Forget about adjudication! It’s obvious the register has deliberately been tampered with!”

    Key Anomalies Uncovered
Dr. Omane Boamah detailed several anomalies found during the exercise, which he believes point to a flawed electoral process. These anomalies include:

Missing Names: Registered voters whose names are absent from the voters’ register.
Misplaced Qualified Voters: Individuals who are qualified to vote but have been wrongly placed on the Exception List or the Multiple List.
Unremoved Disqualified Voters: Persons who were disqualified due to multiple registrations or successful challenges but remain on the Main Provisional Voters Register (PVR).
Unauthorised Transfers: People who have been transferred without their knowledge, in addition to old transfers still appearing on the register.
Polling Station Mismatches: Voters who have been moved from one polling station to another without their knowledge.
Dr. Omane Boamah also criticised the “awkward process” that allowed voters to apply for proxy voting earlier this year without verifying their biometrics.

    Calls for Action
The NDC’s Director of Elections has called for an immediate investigation by Ghana’s Parliament into the EC’s handling of the voters’ register.

He stressed that if Parliament fails to act, both Ghanaians and the international community must pressure the EC to allow a forensic audit of its system, including the register.

“As contained in the uploaded petition, the Parliament of Ghana must investigate the Electoral Commission.

“If Parliament fails, Ghanaians, together with the international community, must exert enough pressure on the EC to permit a forensic audit of their system, including the register,” he emphasised.

NDC’s Director of Elections, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has raised alarms over unresolved issues concerning the Electoral Commission’s (EC) management of voter registration and verification equipment.

He emphasised that the theft of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) laptops—captured by CCTV at the EC headquarters—has yet to be addressed. In addition, there are ongoing concerns about missing or stolen Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).

Dr. Omane Boamah also suggested that the NDC is planning a series of public forums and protests aimed at demanding transparency and accountability from the Electoral Commission.

These actions are part of the party’s broader effort to address and resolve these critical issues.

As Ghana prepares for the December 2024 elections, the NDC’s proactive stance underscores growing tensions and scrutiny surrounding the electoral process, with both political parties and the general public closely monitoring the EC’s actions.

SDA church suspends Great Ampong – Reports

Radio station based in Kumasi, Angel FM,has reported that Isaac Ampong, known in the music industry as Great Ampong, has been suspended by the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

This decision follows a thorough investigation by the church over recent weeks.

The suspension reportedly stems from Ampong’s actions that are considered inconsistent with the Seventh-Day Adventist principles.

Notably, he has performed at various events on Saturdays, a day that is designated for Sabbath observance according to church teachings.

The final trigger for his suspension was his recent ordination as a pastor during his travels abroad, which further complicated his standing within the church.

Mahama promises to establish a new airline in Ghana if elected

Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has committed to launching a new national airline if he wins the December elections.

At the NDC’s manifesto launch in Winneba, Central Region, Mahama outlined his plan to create a national carrier and transform Ho Airport into a key aviation training center.

Despite initial promises that Ghana Airlines would start operations in early 2023, the public-private venture has yet to take off.

Ashanti Airlines, selected to lead the initiative, is still working on obtaining the necessary certifications from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

They have not yet introduced their brand or begun ticket sales, and their application for an Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) is still pending.

The effort to establish a national airline follows the collapse of Ghana International Airlines in 2010 and the earlier closure of Ghana Airways in 2004.

Previous attempts to set up a new carrier, including partnerships with Ethiopian Airlines and EgyptAir, have not succeeded.

A new committee was formed to review proposals after the Ministry of Aviation was merged into the Ministry of Transport.

Mahama’s proposal aims to revitalise Ghana’s aviation sector and address the long-standing gap left by the disappearance of national airlines.

  • Drought in Northern region: No food shortage, no famine – Agric Minister assures

Drought in Northern region: No food shortage, no famine – Agric Minister assures

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, is optimistic that the country will not experience a famine despite the severe drought impacting Northern Ghana, .

Northern Ghana has endured more than two months without rain, leading to stunted crops and rising anxiety among farmers about the prospects for their harvest and potential food shortages.

In a recent interview with Channel One TV, Acheampong reassured the public that these fears are unfounded.

He emphasized that the government is actively addressing the situation and has measures in place to prevent it from developing into a full-blown food crisis.

“I don’t think there will be a 1982 [1983] event, I don’t think that there will be famine, I don’t think that there will be food shortages, none of that,” Acheampong stated.

“I think maybe at the time that it happened, we didn’t have the predictive tools or the intelligence to be able to deal with the situation.

“Some of which at the time were compounded by drought and fires which ravaged almost the whole country. We don’t have that situation on our hands now and we’re not going to get there.”

The 1983 famine in Ghana, one of the most severe food crises in the country’s history, was triggered by a prolonged drought starting in 1981 and devastating bushfires that destroyed up to 35% of the nation’s food supply.

Minister Bryan Acheampong reassured the public that the government has implemented measures to prevent a repeat of such a disaster.

He noted that while the current drought might impact food markets later in September and October, the government is proactively addressing the situation to mitigate any potential shortages.

“All the things that we are talking about, except for the damage to the crops that has happened now, in terms of the impact on the markets, will be more at the end of September and October, and we are putting in steps now to deal with it,” he assured.

“By now, even if the crops were doing well, they wouldn’t have harvested it. So, with all the stock of grains the farmers were living on, they still had something to live on until the next harvest in September.

“And so we are saying that we need to have all the systems and support in place in the country by the 20th to the end of September, to take us through. So that is what we’re planning against,” he explained.

He concluded by affirming his confidence that Ghana will not see a repeat of the 1982-1983 famine, which was characterised by severe drought and widespread bushfires that devastated the country’s food production.

  • Video: Asantehene destools three chiefs over alleged involvement ‘galamsey’

Video: Asantehene destools three chiefs over alleged involvement ‘galamsey’

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has taken decisive action against illegal mining, or ‘galamsey,’ by destooling three chiefs from Sabronum.

The Gyaasehene, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene were all removed from their positions during the Asanteman Council meeting on August 26, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace.

This bold move followed an investigation by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), which confirmed the chiefs’ involvement in galamsey activities, a practice that has severely damaged the environment and threatened the health and livelihoods of the people in the Ashanti Region.

The Asantehene’s decision to strip the chiefs of their titles was prompted by a petition from concerned residents of Sabronum, who sought to put an end to the destructive mining activities in their area.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during the council meeting, reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the environment and protecting the people of the Ashanti Region from the adverse effects of illegal mining.

He made it clear that any actions endangering the well-being of his subjects would not be tolerated within the Asante Kingdom.

In the wake of the destoolment, a new leader has been appointed for Sabronum. Kofi Asante has been selected as the new Sabronum Manhene, signalling a fresh start for the community.

The hope is that this change in leadership will help steer Sabronum away from the challenges posed by galamsey and towards a more sustainable future.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s firm stance on illegal mining has elicited a range of reactions. While many have lauded his decision as a necessary step to combat galamsey, some have expressed concern about the impact on the families of the destooled chiefs.

Nonetheless, the Asantehene’s actions underscore his unwavering resolve to preserve the integrity of the Asante Kingdom and ensure the safety and prosperity of its people.

Forum for Accountable Governance submits petition to OSP over $245m spending on All African Games

Forum for Accountable Governance has formally requested the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to launch an investigation into alleged corruption surrounding the 13th All African Games.

The event, held from March 4 to March 23, 2024, saw a significant expenditure of $245 million, raising concerns about the transparency and accountability of the fund’s allocation.

Kwame Owusu Danso, the Convener of the group, has voiced serious concerns regarding potential irregularities, including breaches in procurement processes, conflicts of interest, and other forms of corruption.

He emphasized the need for a detailed and unbiased inquiry and expressed strong confidence in the ability of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng to carry out a comprehensive investigation into these allegations.

“I have so much confidence in the Office of the Special Prosecutor. We are all law-abiding citizens, and if the investigations are conducted properly and reveal no corruption-related issues in the organization of the All-African Games, I will be satisfied that I have done my duty for the good people of this country,” he stated.

Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Prof. Amin Alhassan, has denied recent assertions made by the Sports Ministry regarding the funds allocated for the coverage of the 13th African Games.

During a Public Accounts Committee hearing on August 19, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif claimed that GBC had received over $3 million for its coverage of the event.

Contradicting this, Prof. Alhassan clarified that GBC was actually allocated only $105,000.

He explained that this funding was provided to facilitate GBC’s decision to dedicate an entire channel to the African Games, which required the suspension of regular programming on GTV Sports Plus.

Prof. Alhassan’s clarification came in response to questions raised by Committee member Sam George, who expressed concerns over unpaid debts owed to the technical staff involved in covering the games

  • MCE denies knowledge of galamsey takeover at Draw River Forest Reserve

MCE denies knowledge of galamsey takeover at Draw River Forest Reserve

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Nzema East Municipal Assembly in Axim, Eric Essien, has expressed disbelief over reports of illegal mining activities within the Draw River Forest Reserve.

This reaction comes after a JoyNews investigation revealed that an unknown illegal miner has encroached upon the Draw River Forest Reserve, one of Ghana’s vital protected areas, located in Gwira Banso within the Nzema East District of the Western Region.

The report highlights that portions of the forest have already been cleared, and heavy machinery, including excavators, has been moved to the site, indicating the possible commencement of illegal mining operations that could severely damage the forest.

In light of these developments, Betterland Ghana Services, the company legally holding concessions within the forest, has denied any involvement or prior knowledge of the intrusion.

During an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight on August 27, the Nzema East MCE stated that he was previously unaware of any illegal mining activities occurring within the forest reserve.

“What I know is that a certain company called Better Land has the mining lease, but they have not started work yet. But I don’t know any miner over there; I don’t know anything about it,” he said.

Mr. Essien revealed that he became aware of the situation only after watching the JoyNews report and intends to bring it to the attention of the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC).

He assured that he would personally visit the site, accompanied by the management team and the police, to conduct an investigation and promised to provide an update on the findings afterward.

  • Bawumia names two ‘failures’ of the Akufo-Addo govt

Bawumia names two ‘failures’ of the Akufo-Addo govt

Vice president and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bawumia, had a lot to answer during his media engagement on Sunday, August 25, 2025.

The event saw the presence of seasoned journalists from several reputable media houses, such as TV3’s Bella Mundi, GH One’s Natalie Fort and Channel One TV’s Frema Adunyame, among others.

During the question segment, Channel One’s journalist quizzed Dr Bawumia on what he considers the ‘2 failures’ of his current administration and how he’d correct them.

In response, the vice president named the Gold For Oil Policy (G4O) and adequate infrastructure in Senior High School (SHS).

He wished his government had started the G4O policy earlier than its implementation in 2022.

“I wish, for example, we had started the gold purchase much earlier. If we had started it earlier during our first term, for example, the buffer in terms of gold would have been much bigger.

A few years ago we had 8.7 tonnes of gold, and so far they have bought about 72 tonnes or so. It is something that I wish when I sit back and look. I wish we had been able to buy a bit more and start gold for oil and reserve much earlier, but as I said, the crisis made us get into these policies,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia also, highlighted infrastructure development in secondary schools as a significant achievement of his government, claiming it has made considerable strides in Ghana’s education sector since independence.

However, he also admitted challenges in completing certain projects within senior high schools.

While emphasising the overall progress, he acknowledged that some infrastructure initiatives have faced delays, reflecting both the successes and ongoing hurdles in their efforts to improve the educational landscape.

“Even though we’ve built more school infrastructure than any government, I believe that we still had challenges with SHS. i had completed a bit more in terms of accommodation in Senior High Schools (SHS) and dining halls.

This is one of the reasons why I want us to move government expenditure away from government to the private sector. This is a major policy we’re bringing on” he added.

  • 6 ways Mahama hopes to alleviate hardships in Ghana if elected

6 ways Mahama hopes to alleviate hardships in Ghana if elected

Ghana has for the past 4 years been facing heightened economic difficulties marked by high living costs and inflation but the former President John Dramani Mahama and leading opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) appears unwavering in tackling the crisis head on.

For the NDC, alleviating the hardship many Ghanaians are faced with is key among their priorities, if the top most.

The former President and the NDC unveiled six significant interventions to be deployed if elected into office in the  December 2024 election.

This announcement comes as the country approaches the 2024 elections, with the two leading political parties presenting their solutions to the ongoing economic challenges.

In a tweet on August 27, Mahama outlined his party’s proposed measures aimed at alleviating the financial strain on Ghanaians and improving social welfare. Here are the key proposals:

    1. No-Fees-Stress Policy: New students at public universities, colleges of education, and nursing training institutions will not be required to pay academic fees.
    2. Reintroduction of Students Loan Trust Plus: This programme will assist continuing students in public educational institutions with their fees.
    3. Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities: Tertiary education will be provided at no cost for individuals with disabilities.
    4. Ghana Medical Care Trust [MahamaCares]: This fund will cover healthcare costs for chronic diseases, including kidney failure, cancers, sickle cell disease, diabetes, hypertension, and heart diseases.
    5. Free Sanitary Pads: Female students in basic and secondary schools will receive free sanitary pads.
    6. Free Primary Healthcare: From CHPS clinics to polyclinics, primary healthcare will be provided at no cost.

The NDC’s manifesto, launched on August 24, 2024, in Winneba, also includes commitments to removing certain taxes, such as the betting tax and COVID levy, investing $10 billion in public housing, and enhancing education.

The party also pledged to investigate corruption under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration and focus on economic revitalisation to address current hardships.

  • Grain export ban sparks ‘fear’ among peasant farmers over potential low prices

Grain export ban sparks ‘fear’ among peasant farmers over potential low prices

The government’s recent decision to impose a ban on grain exports has triggered concerns among peasant farmers, who fear that the move could lead to a drastic drop in prices for their produce.

The ban, instituted in response to a severe drought affecting the Northern regions, was announced by the Minister of Agriculture during a press briefing in Accra on 26 August 2024.

The minister explained that the directive, which takes immediate effect, is aimed at ensuring that sufficient crops are available for the domestic market during this challenging period.

However, the Peasant Farmers Association has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision, arguing that the government has not implemented adequate measures to protect farmers from the risk of selling their produce at low prices.

President of the Peasant Farmers Association, Bismark Owusu Nortey, voiced his concerns during a media engagement, criticising the government’s approach as lacking inclusivity.

“If you are announcing a ban, the ideal thing is to put in place local measures that will insulate the farmers from any possible low prices,” he stated.

Nortey further emphasised the need for farmers, as key stakeholders in the agricultural sector, to be involved in the decision-making process.

“The first one has to do with the government’s resolve to ban the export of grains. I think that this particular approach – is an approach that was not inclusive.

They did not take on board the views, the concerns, and the possible challenges that this might have on farmers,” he added.

The drought in the Northern regions, which typically receive peak rainfall from June to September, has left 435,872 farmers across 871,745 hectares grappling with significant crop failures.

Key crops such as maize, rice, and yam have been particularly hard hit, resulting in estimated losses of GH¢3.5 billion and a potential revenue loss of GH¢10.4 billion.

The affected area, responsible for 62% of Ghana’s annual grain production, now faces the risk of losing 1.8 million hectares of land.

In response to the crisis, the government has announced plans to raise $500 million, with a portion of the funds earmarked to compensate farmers for their losses. As part of the relief efforts, each affected farmer is set to receive GH¢1,000 ($64) per hectare to help alleviate the financial impact of the drought.

The Peasant Farmers Association continues to call for more comprehensive measures to ensure that farmers are not left vulnerable to market fluctuations, especially in the wake of the export ban.

The association urges the government to engage with farmers and other stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions that address the challenges posed by the current agricultural crisis.

National Sports Authority (NSA) in Ashanti has shared new images of the Baba Yara Stadium pitch, showcasing its restored lush green appearance ahead of the Black Stars’ match against Angola.

The pitch, now looking healthy, underwent extensive refurbishment following a church event in June 2024, which had left it in poor condition.

The NSA’s efforts to bring the pitch back to a high standard were successful, fulfilling their promise to have it ready in time for the upcoming game.

“We have a robust plan, a crack field, and a maintenance team to recover the pitch and restore the facility in general in record time throughout August. Stakeholders can rest assured,” the NSA Ashanti Region stated in a post on X.

The Black Stars will host Angola in Kumasi on September 5, 2024, before visiting Niger on September 9.

You talk like AK 47, but media engagement then “errm, errm” – Mahama teases Bawumia

Former president and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has taken a jab at NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia, following his media engagement on August 25, 2024.

In a video making trends on X (formerly Twitter) shared by Ghanaian blogger @KALYJAY, Mahama is seen humorously criticising Bawumia’s struggle with stuttering and stammering when responding to questions from the press.

Mahama, during a community engagement at Kasseh, a town in the Ada East district, teased the vice president.

“You can speak rata-ta-ta-ta like AK 47; suddenly media encounter errrm !eerr errrm ! I think errm errm “

Dr Bawumia following his manifesto, announced his decision to meet the press on August 25.

During this encounter, he gave some answers, such as how Ghanaians expect of him to honour all the promises he has given as a flagbearer as a vice president. On his part, “if I do everything now what would I do when I come into office?” that sparked controversies.

  • Dede Ayew, Tariq Lamptey, 2 others unlikely to make it for Otto Addo’s Angola-Niger squad

Dede Ayew, Tariq Lamptey, 2 others unlikely to make it for Otto Addo’s Angola-Niger squad

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has reportedly submitted his squad list to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and Niger.

The official announcement is expected soon, with the matches scheduled for early September. Key players may be absent due to various reasons, including lack of club activity or limited playing time this season.

Ghana will face Angola in Kumasi on September 5, 2024, followed by a match against Niger on September 9.

Here are players set who could miss Ghana’s squad

    Andre Ayew

Black Stars skipper Andre Ayew is a free agent and could land a deal in the window’s final days.

He has been a free agent since leaving Le Havre in the French Ligue 1 at the end of the 2023/2024 season.

    Salis Samed

The midfielder at RC Lens has been relegated to the reserve squad amid ongoing uncertainty about his future.

He is currently in discussions with French clubs Nantes and Montpellier, both of which are eager to finalise a deal before the transfer window closes. Due to these unresolved negotiations, he has missed the first three matches of the season.

    Daniel Amartey

The Ghanaian centre-back has found minutes hard to come by during his time at Besiktas, costing him a place in the Black Stars.

He departed the club after a season and has been a free agent since. According to the report, Celtic have expressed interest in signing the defender but he has not been offered a concrete deal yet.

    Tariq Lmaptey

Brighton and Hove Albion defender Tariq Lamptey has just returned from a knock that sidelined him for the club’s opening game.

Although he was on the bench during Brighton’s victory over Manchester United in their second match, he didn’t see any action.

Due to concerns about his fitness, there’s a possibility that he might not be included in Otto Addo’s upcoming squad for Ghana.

  • I regret womanising – Asamoah Gyan

I regret womanising – Asamoah Gyan

Ghana’s record goal scorer, Asamoah Gyan, candidly admitted that he struggled with womanising during his peak years, acknowledging that it was a detrimental aspect of his life.

Reflecting on his past mistakes during an interview on Onua TV, the former Black Stars captain shared valuable life lessons, urging young people to avoid the pitfalls of womanising, citing his own experiences as a cautionary tale.

“Everybody is a womaniser, but womanising did not help me. I will advise partners to keep their issues between themselves,” he said.

Asamoah Gyan, the renowned Ghanaian footballer, ended his decade-long marriage to Gifty Gyan in 2023 after a court officially annulled their union on October 31, 2023.

The couple, who share three children, now navigate life post-divorce, with Gifty granted custody while Gyan is responsible for child support.

Edwin Kusi Appiah, Gyan’s legal representative, shed light on the circumstances leading to the divorce during an interview with Kofi TV.

Kusi Appiah revealed that Gyan had been plagued by persistent threats from a man claiming to be the true father of his children, particularly the firstborn.

These troubling accusations ultimately drove Gyan to gather evidence and seek the annulment of his marriage, concluding a difficult chapter in his personal life.

“Asamoah Gyan married his wife in 2013 but had been with her since 2003. He got information that prior to marrying her, the lady had married another man.

Their marriage had three kids with the firstborn coming in 2005. Asamoah Gyan told me he was threatened by someone that the children, particularly the firstborn, were not his and that they belonged to him (the person issuing the threat).

“That is what forced us to go to court and seek permission to conduct DNA on the kids. Thankfully, the DNA test proved that Gyan was the father of the children and he was really happy with it. Gyan was happy because he loved the children. That is the main reason Asamoah Gyan went to court,” he said.

  • Man City’s Cancelo to make Saudi move in £21.2m deal

Man City’s Cancelo to make Saudi move in £21.2m deal

Manchester City have reached an agreement with Saudi Pro League team Al-Hilal for the transfer of defender Joao Cancelo, with the deal valued at £21.2 million.

While personal terms are believed to be agreeable, Cancelo has yet to finalise the move. Should he proceed, the 30-year-old will sign a three-year contract, bringing his five-year tenure at the Etihad Stadium to a close.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola had hinted earlier this month that Cancelo might return to play for the club.

However, the issues that led to Cancelo being loaned out to Bayern Munich and Barcelona over the past 18 months remain a significant barrier.

Cancelo has been absent from Manchester City’s two Premier League fixtures this season and did not participate in the Community Shield win against Manchester United.

He was also missing from the squad due to several players’ involvement in the European Championship in Germany.

Originally, Cancelo was introduced by Guardiola as an innovative inverted full-back but lost his starting position shortly after signing a new contract in 2022.

Colombia 2024: Black Princesses all set for friendly clash with South Korea

Head coach of the Black Princesses, Yussif Basigi, says his side is anticipating the prospect of facing South Korea as part of their preparations for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The game, scheduled for Tuesday, August 27, will be the team’s second high-profile test ahead of the competition which begins on August 31.

Ghana faced Mexico in the face encounter in Bogota last week with both sides failing to score a goal in the game.

Basigi believes his players are primed for action against the Asians.

“We are ready and the South Koreans we all know are a very good side, said the gaffer. “We just finished the team shaping with our dress rehearsal as to how to play them.

“I think the girls are ready. You can see there are a lot of smiles on their faces not because they feel overconfident but because it looks like now they are getting on well with the conditions here.”

The 52-year-old also believes the friendlies give his players the opportunity to prepare their minds for the main competition ahead.

“[The friendlies] are extremely important for us because I will say some of these girls have not even played international games before, some have not travelled before. This is their first experience,” he added.

“Having played will also warm themselves into the competition.”

The game against South Korea kicks off at 20:30 GMT.

  • Bawumia promises to speed up payment process of Black Challenge’s allowances

Bawumia promises to speed up payment process of Black Challenge’s allowances

Presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to address concerns regarding unpaid allowances for the national amputee football team, the Black Challenge.

Reports indicate that the team is still awaiting compensation for their efforts at the 2024 Amputee Africa Cup of Nations (AAFCON), where they triumphed over Morocco in the final held in Egypt, securing their second consecutive AAFCON title after their victory in Tanzania.

Despite their success, the team has yet to receive the promised allowances.

Bawumia has committed to ensuring that the Black Challenge receives the payments they are owed.

“Looking at the national amputee team who are owed some allowances, I will talk to the Sports Minister to get the facts on the issue, and if that is the case, we will try to expedite their payment,” said Bawumia during his engagement with the press on Sunday, August 25.

“When I leave here, I am going to raise that issue.”

In recent years, the team has struggled with financial issues, even resorting to purchasing their own jerseys from Kantamanto for the 2024 Amputee Africa Cup of Nations (AAFCON).

Despite these challenges, the Black Challenge has successfully qualified for the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup in Panama.

  • Denmark set to shut its embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso

Denmark set to shut its embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso

Denmark announced on Monday that it will be closing its embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso, following a series of military coups in these countries. This decision aligns with Denmark’s new strategy for its engagement with Africa.

Mali, which has been under military rule since 2020, has faced ongoing conflict with Tuareg rebels in the north and has aligned itself with Russia’s Wagner mercenary group after severing military ties with Western allies, including EU nations.

The shifting alliances have strained relations between Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Western countries, as these nations increasingly turn to Russia for support.

The Danish foreign ministry noted that the persistent instability and the failure of local authorities to restore security have severely limited diplomatic options in the Sahel region.

Consequently, Denmark is adjusting its diplomatic focus and will now open embassies in Rwanda, Senegal, and Tunisia, while also expanding its staff in existing embassies in Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana.

Mali’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet responded to requests for comment on Denmark’s decision.

“One of the most important foreign policy questions of this century will be whether African countries will orient themselves more towards the East or the West,” the Danish foreign ministry said in a statement.

“We have a clear interest in African countries looking to us in Europe to set the course for their future,” it added.

These enhancements are designed to improve safety and convenience for all users of the road.

Completed by Oswal Investments Limited, this project is expected to significantly reduce travel times, lower transportation costs, alleviate flooding, and enhance overall road safety in the communities of Ashaley Botwe, School Junction, and Borteyman, extending to the motorway.

At the inauguration of the Ashaley Botwe School Junction to Tema Motorway Road project, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo highlighted the project’s significance in fulfilling government commitments and bringing tangible benefits to all citizens.

The President emphasised that the road was more than just a transportation link; it represents a crucial bridge between communities, a driver of economic development, and a catalyst for new opportunities.

He pointed out that the road acts as a vital link for the eastern part of Accra, connecting areas like Tema Communities 7, 18, 19, 23, and 24 with northern regions including Borteyman, Adjiringanor, Adentan, and Dodowa.

By enhancing connectivity between the eastern and western parts of Accra, the project is set to ease traffic congestion, create new economic zones, and support the growth of local businesses and communities.

  • Flowking Stone details how Ghanaian music producers abandoned artistes for Kumawood

Flowking Stone details how Ghanaian music producers abandoned artistes for Kumawood

Ghanaian musician Kwaku Nsia Boama, also known as Flowking Stone, has detailed how music producers in Ghana ‘abandoned’ artists for the Kumawood industry.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based 3FM, he explained how music producers usually handled the financial aspects of music promotion, including paying for radio slots and DJs.

However, the decline in CD sales and the rise of Kumawood influenced many of these producers to shift from music production to movie production.

“Those days when we used to come to radio, there were producers who used to release our songs and fund them. They would take the songs to DJs and pay them.

Now, there came a time when the producers left to pursue movies when Kumawood was at its peak, and music was not thriving like before,” he mentioned.

Flowking Stone highlighted that artists were now left to bear the financial burden of promoting their music, including paying for dancers, radio and TV promotions, and digital ads.

“There was a significant change. They were unable to sell CDs, the internet was emerging, and artists were clashing with producers and facing various challenges. For a long time, artists had to fund themselves; only recently have record labels started to come in,” the rapper stated.

He noted that platforms like TikTok have helped with music promotion, but they also come with high costs.

“Now TikTok has emerged, and artists started gaining popularity. Even before TikTok, there was Facebook. There was a time when posting a video on Facebook would reach all your fans, but that changed.

They restricted the audience to only 5% of your fans unless you paid for an ad. We started tipping club DJs, radio DJs, and TV stations.

The funny thing is that TikTok is the latest trend, and they charge more than others. So now, the process is challenging. You can go viral on TikTok, but without support from radio friends, it may not go far,” he said.

Flowking Stone is currently promoting his ‘Decision’ album, which features collaborations with artists like King Paluta, Mr Drew, and Morphty.

  • Cedi depreciation to worsen if food import becomes an option – Finance Minister

Cedi depreciation to worsen if food import becomes an option – Finance Minister

Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has warned of a possible increase in foreign exchange demand if Ghana is forced to import food to address shortages caused by the ongoing drought in Northern Ghana.

During a press conference in Accra on Monday, August 26, Dr. Amin Adam expressed cautious optimism about making significant strides in securing the nation’s food supply.

However, he acknowledged that resorting to food imports to meet market needs could have adverse effects on the economy.

He also noted that discussions with Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong on the best strategies for sourcing food to stabilise the markets and provide necessary relief have not yet taken place.

“I’m very optimistic that we will make significant progress, but we also know that our inflation basket is dominated by food inflation. When you see food shortages and their effect on prices, you should expect that inflation will respond.

He added, “And will respond in a way that you do not want. Then we are also talking about bringing in food for the markets and also providing food relief. I’m yet to discuss with the minister how we are going to source the food, he may be running away from mentioning imports.

But we already import a lot of our food. And so, one other way that the economy may be affected is from the perspective of foreign exchange.

“People are complaining the cedi is getting weaker against the dollar, the rate is higher against the dollar. And so, if you are going to bring in more food to support what we already have, you need to back it with forex. And therefore, the demand for the dollar will certainly increase.

Relative to what we anticipated if we didn’t have to meet the additional food requirements, some of which may come through inputs.”

He emphasized that the drought would have far-reaching consequences, impacting the economy in various ways.

“In different ways, the economy is going to be affected.”

Northern Ghana is currently grappling with a severe drought that has sparked widespread concerns about food security and the livelihood of thousands of farmers.

The region has been without rain for over two months, with the extended dry spell stunting crop growth and leaving farmers with little hope for a successful harvest.

  • A whopping GHC8bn relief fund for Northern farmers – ‘Broke’ Ghana govt announces

A whopping GHC8bn relief fund for Northern farmers – ‘Broke’ Ghana govt announces

Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has revealed that the government has allocated GH¢8 billion to assist farmers grappling with the effects of the recent drought.

In addressing the crisis, he admitted that although this intervention won’t entirely eliminate the drought’s impact, it will be crucial in helping to stabilise the situation.

“Our response may not entirely neutralise the extent of the problem. But our response certainly will help stabilise the situation until we get out of the crisis,” Dr Adam stated.

Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam disclosed that the government is securing roughly $500 million (about GH¢8 billion) to finance a comprehensive crisis response program for farmers impacted by the recent drought.

This relief package includes direct cash transfers and the distribution of essential supplies like food to those affected.

To ensure the aid reaches those in need fairly and transparently, a specialized task force, including members from the Ministries of Finance and Food and Agriculture, will manage the distribution process.

Dr. Amin Adam outlined the funding strategy, noting that GH¢2.5 billion will be drawn from the contingency fund, while another GH¢2.4 billion will be sourced from development partners.

He also emphasised that the World Bank’s contribution will be directed towards cash transfers and providing farming inputs to support the farmers.

  • Peasant farmers fight against govt’s ban on grain export over improper stakeholder engagement

Peasant farmers fight against govt’s ban on grain export over improper stakeholder engagement

The Peasant Farmers Association has expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s recent decision to ban the export of essential grains, including maize, rice, and soybeans.

This reaction follows an announcement by Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, who introduced the ban as a measure to safeguard food security amidst an ongoing dry spell that has severely impacted agricultural production across eight regions.

President of the Peasant Farmers Association, Bismark Owusu Nortey, voiced his concerns on Joy FM’s Top Story on August 26, stating that the decision was made without consulting farmers.

He emphasized that as key stakeholders in the agricultural sector, farmers should have been included in the decision-making process to help devise a sustainable solution to the crisis.

“The first one has to do with government’s resolve to ban the export of grains. I think that this particular approach – is an approach that was not inclusive.

They did not take on board the views the concerns and the possible challenges that this might have on farmers,” he said.

Mr Nortey indicated that often demand and supply determine the prices of grains on the market however, this ban would force farmers to sell their produce at cheap prices to prevent produce from spoiling in their barns.

“If you are announcing a ban, the ideal thing is to put in place local measures that will insulate the farmers from any possible low prices,” he added.

  • Ablakwa wants “excessive” powers granted to the President reduced

Ablakwa wants “excessive” powers granted to the President reduced

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed concerns about the excessive powers granted to Ghana’s president.

During an appearance on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning Show on Monday, Ablakwa criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for enacting what he described as unclear and non-transparent policies.

He argued that the presidency often bypasses the appropriate procedures and fails to seek legislative approval before implementing policies.

In response, Ablakwa revealed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is developing new policies aimed at curbing presidential authority to promote greater transparency and accountability.

“The time has come for the powers of the President to be reduced. We’ve created a monster in the president. He has too much power,” the North Tongu MP stated.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa further highlighted that state assets are often sold to government officials without adequate oversight or consultation with Parliament.

He pointed out that these transactions are frequently conducted without being presented to Parliament for review.

Ablakwa also criticized the ruling NPP government for engaging in unnecessary and excessive spending, stressing that public officials are elected to serve with accountability and not to burden the citizens with avoidable costs.

“You don’t bring people into government to live like Arabian kings and Russian oligarchs at our expense. Where were their private jets when they were in opposition? These are the things that are burdening us.”

According to him, all procedures are done in secrecy, which is why he goes undercover to investigate and uncover information for the public so as to keep the government in check.

Therefore, apart from character and integrity, the NDC will ensure transparency in policymaking and other governmental issues with well-structured mechanisms, including “deep constitutional reforms when elected into power,” according to him.
