Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul has announced that the government will station security forces in all border towns nationwide, with a particular focus on the northern regions, to curb the smuggling of grains into neighbouring countries.
This initiative is a key component of the government’s recent ban on grain exports, which has been implemented to prevent potential food shortages due to prolonged drought conditions.
Nitiwul emphasised that the deployment is intended to safeguard the country’s food security and protect the welfare of its citizens.
“We will act well. We are deploying security personnel] across the borders, particularly in the northern part. We are also [deploying] to the east and the south. And so we will ask citizens to support the security agencies.
“If, for some reason, there is some unapproved route or approved route or somebody sees something that is going on that is not nice, please let us know so that we can act appropriately.
It is for the good of all of us that we should not make our citizens suffer.”
National Democratic Congress (NDC) has outlined ten key initiatives for the sports sector in their 2024 manifesto, which will shape their campaign leading up to the December 7 general elections.
While the manifesto addresses several critical areas, including the economy, employment, agriculture, healthcare, education, governance, and entertainment, the focus on sports is particularly notable.
NDC Flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has pledged to nurture young sports talents by providing scholarships to help them build successful careers.
Additionally, the party has committed to constructing sports stadiums in all regions of Ghana, ensuring widespread access to quality sports facilities.
The NDC’s sports agenda is centered on making substantial investments and fostering development across various aspects of the sector, with a strong emphasis on long-term growth and sustainability.

Chelsea are reportedly considering a move for Jadon Sancho, potentially competing with Juventus for the Manchester United forward’s signature, sources have revealed.
With the transfer deadline looming on Friday, United are open to letting Sancho depart, but negotiations with Juventus have yet to result in an agreement.
Chelsea have identified Sancho as one of several possible targets as they look to bolster their squad in the final days of the transfer window.
The 24-year-old winger has not featured for United this season, having been left out of the squad for matches against Fulham and Brighton.
After spending the latter part of the previous season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, Sancho returned to Old Trafford this summer and made a brief appearance as a substitute in the Community Shield loss to Manchester City.
However, he has not played a competitive match for United since his public fallout with manager Erik ten Hag in August 2023.
United are seeking a permanent transfer for Sancho, valuing him at around £40 million ($52.8m), but his substantial weekly wages of over £300k have been a significant obstacle in negotiations.
Sancho has two years remaining on his contract, which he signed upon his £73 million arrival from Dortmund in 2021.
While United prefer a permanent deal, they are not ruling out a loan arrangement, provided it includes an option or obligation to buy at the end of the season.
In other transfer news, United midfielder Scott McTominay is in discussions with Napoli after the clubs agreed on a £25 million fee.
Should McTominay opt to join the Serie A side, it could give United more financial flexibility in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
PSG are seeking around £50 million for the Uruguayan, who they signed from Sporting last summer.
Ademola Lookman remains interested in a move toParis Saint-Germain, but negotiations with Atalanta have stalled due to the French club’s reluctance to meet the Italian side’s asking price.
This development has opened the door for other clubs, including Arsenal, to potentially enter the race for the forward, according to Sky Sports Deutschland’s Florian Plettenberg.
Lookman had a standout season in Italy, scoring 17 goals and providing 10 assists across all competitions, which has drawn the attention of several European clubs.
Despite his desire to leave Atalanta this summer, no transfer agreement has been finalised.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RI9RBd21Io
While Lookman is eager to join PSG, the likelihood of a deal appears slim as the two clubs remain far apart in their valuations.
PSG already have strikers Gonçalo Ramos and Randal Kolo Muani, and Marco Asensio has also been deployed in an attacking role.
Arsenal, among other European clubs, are keeping a close watch on Lookman’s situation.
The Gunners are actively seeking to strengthen their forward line, especially with Eddie Nketiah potentially on his way out and Gabriel Jesus facing a possible injury layoff, pending the results of an MRI scan on his groyne.
Anthony Gordon’s late equaliser salvaged a 1-1 draw for Newcastle United against Bournemouth, dampening the hosts’ 125th-anniversary celebrations in the Premier League on Sunday.
Bournemouth initially took the lead through Marcus Tavernier in the first half, but Gordon struck in the 76th minute, converting a cross from substitute Harvey Barnes at the back post to ensure Newcastle earned a well-deserved point.
With this draw, Newcastle advanced to four points from their opening two matches of the season, while Bournemouth followed up their opening draw at Nottingham Forest with another stalemate.
Bournemouth nearly secured a dramatic late victory when Dango Ouattara found the back of the net in stoppage time.
However, his effort was ruled out for handball after a VAR check, much to the frustration of the home fans.
Ouattara had risen powerfully for the header, but the review revealed the ball had made contact with the top of his arm, nullifying the goal.
Despite Bournemouth’s spirited effort, it was Newcastle who looked more likely to grab a winner in the closing stages.
Bournemouth’s goalkeeper, Neto, made several crucial saves to deny Alexander Isak, Joelinton, and Dan Burn’s header.
Bournemouth’s lead came after Antoine Semenyo dispossessed Joelinton in midfield and weaved past three defenders before setting up Tavernier for a tap-in.
Semenyo, who struck the crossbar earlier in the first half, almost registered another assist in the 64th minute, but his pass was misfired by a sliding Evanilson at the back post.
Evanilson, Bournemouth’s record signing, was making his debut as one of five changes from the previous week’s lineup.
However, his contributions were limited, with two other shots on goal comfortably handled by Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope. Evanilson was substituted after 72 minutes.
Founded in 1899,Bournemouth have enjoyedtheir best period in the last decade, with their initial Premier League promotion coming in 2015.
Eriksson, the first non-British manager of the England team, led the Three Lions to the quarter-finals at three major tournaments during his five-year spell in charge between 2001 and 2006.
In January Eriksson said he had “at best” a year to live after being diagnosed with cancer.
His family said on Monday: “Sven-Goran Eriksson has passed away. After a long illness, SGE died during the morning at home, surrounded by family.”
Sven-Göran Eriksson, the Swedish football manager, had an illustrious career that saw him manage 12 clubs, including Manchester City, Leicester City, AS Roma, and Lazio, amassing 18 trophies along the way.
Eriksson’s international experience includes leading the national teams of Mexico, the Ivory Coast, and the Philippines. After retiring as a player at the young age of 27, Eriksson launched his managerial career with Degerfors in 1977.
He then joined Gothenburg, where he clinched the Swedish title, two Swedish Cups, and the 1982 UEFA Cup.
Eriksson’s success continued with two stints at Portuguese powerhouse Benfica and roles at several top Italian clubs, including Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, and Lazio.
At Lazio, he secured seven trophies, highlighted by the Serie A title, two Italian Cups, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
Following a recent diagnosis, Eriksson spent the past year visiting some of his former clubs, including Lazio and Sampdoria.
In March, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by helping to lead a Liverpool Legends team to a 4-2 victory over an Ajax Legends side at Anfield, a particularly special moment for the lifelong Liverpool fan.
Eriksson shared a heartfelt message at the end of his newly released documentary film, “Sven,” which debuted earlier this month.
“Don’t be sorry, smile. Thank you for everything, coaches, players, the crowds—it’s been fantastic. Take care of yourself and take care of your life. And live it.”
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelottiremains unfazed by Kylian Mbappé’s recent goal drought, despite the star forward failing to score in back-to-back LaLiga matches.
Mbappé, who signed a five-year deal with Madrid this summer, made an immediate impact by scoring in their UEFA Super Cup triumph over Atalanta earlier this month.
However, in Madrid’s 3-0 win against Real Valladolid at the Bernabéu on Sunday, Mbappé was substituted in the 86th minute, marking his second consecutive league match without finding the back of the net.
Ancelotti, though, expressed no concern over the Frenchman’s temporary scoring slump.
“It makes me very happy. I’ve started off at the Bernabéu winning the game and we got the three points,” Mbappé said to Real Madrid TV after the game.
“It was a great night. The fans were top. We wanted to win the first game [here]. It’s a dream playing in this stadium, but we have another game on Thursday and we want to win again.”

Midfielder Federico Valverde put Madrid ahead after half-time, and substitute Brahim Díaz added a second goal, before Mbappé’s replacement Endrick scored his first goal for the club in the 96th minute.
Speaking in his postmatch news conference, Ancelotti denied that Mbappé’s position at centre-forward — rather than starting off out wide — was limiting his ability to contribute to the team.
“No, I don’t think so at all,” Ancelotti said. “[Mbappé] is a spectacular forward, he’s very fast, and he moves well with the ball.
“He had three chances. I think in that position he’ll score, as he’s always scored. I don’t think he has to play on the left or the right. He’ll score goals.”
Ancelotti also praised Endrick, who signed for Madrid this summer after turning 18.
“He looks good,” Ancelotti said. “He has great potential, and with the goal, he showed all his qualities. He has good control, and a good shot.
“He’s a penalty box forward. In small spaces, he’s very, very dangerous.”
After a 1-1 draw against Real Mallorca on LaLiga’s opening weekend, Real Madrid bounced back with a 3-0 home victory over Real Valladolid as they begin their title defense.
The squad has been managing without key players, including midfielders Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga, who are sidelined with injuries, and defender Ferland Mendy, who missed the Valladolid match due to suspension.
Madrid now looks ahead to a midweek trip toLas Palmas on Thursday, followed by a home clash against Real Betis next weekend.
Prophet Kusi Appiah, widely known as the Warrior Prophet of Charisma Temple International Ministry, has predicted a victory for Vice President and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
During an appearance on Metro TV’s ‘Good Evening Ghana’ with Paul Adom-Otchere, the Prophet declared that Dr. Bawumia’s win in 2024 is divinely ordained and unchangeable.
He emphasised that, according to a revelation from God, Bawumia is destined to be the next president of Ghana.
“Its a done deal, sealed. God has revealed to me that he will be the president, not that I’m on his side. It is something God has written, and no man can erase that,” he said during a discussion on the “spiritual dynamics of the 2024 elections discussion on Metro TV on August 20, 2024.
Touching on the Volta Region, which has gained popularity over the years as a stronghold of the NDC, the Warrior Prophet noted that votes for the NPP would see an increase with Bawumia as the candidate.
However, he predicted that the NPP would lose in the Greater Accra Region, but only by a very small margin.
Dr Bawumia will do well in the Volta Region, where Akufo-Addo and Kuffour couldn’t. The NPP will lose the Greater Accra region by a very slim margin. NPP will win in the Central Region.
Sudan national team head coach James Kwasi Appiah sees the prospect of leading the North African nation to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a monumental achievement.
Since taking charge in 2023, Appiah has revitalised Sudan’s national team, despite the ongoing civil unrest that has halted the country’s competitive football league.
With a squad consisting of only two regularly active professional players, Appiah has managed to guide Sudan to an impressive record in the World Cup qualifiers.
The team has secured three victories and one draw, amassing ten points without a single defeat. This performance places Sudan at the top of their group, two points ahead of Senegal, who trail with eight points.
In an exclusive interview with FIFA, Appiah expressed that qualifying Sudan for the World Cup would be a significant accomplishment—not just for the record books, but for the doors it would open for the country and its footballers.
“Reaching the World Cup would be a great springboard for the development of football in the country. Administratively, it would make things much easier. It could also change the lives of my players.
“Currently, there are only two professionals in the squad. If we were to qualify for a World Cup, they could perform on the biggest stage and then tell themselves that they too were capable of playing in Europe.
“That’s something that would transform their mindset. You cannot imagine how much happiness a World Cup participation would bring to all of Sudan,” the coach stated.
Kwasi Appiah became the first African coach to qualify a team for the World Cup in 2014 with Ghana.
Vice President and presidential candidate for theNew Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has clarified his role and responsibilities as Vice President, emphasising that his current role is to support the President’s vision rather than implement his own.
In a recent discussion, Dr. Bawumia addressed questions about why he is not advancing his personal agenda while serving as Vice President. He explained that his position is primarily to assist the President in executing the existing agenda and that he has limited power to pursue independent policies.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted that, should he become President, he will gain the authority to implement his proposed policies fully. To illustrate the constraints of the vice-presidential role, he pointed out that the recent parliamentary budget approval reflects the President’s priorities, not his own.
“The budget that was approved by Parliament went to Parliament in the name of the president, so it is the president’s budget. It is not my budget,” he said.
“That is why I have outlined my own plans and my own vision, which I can implement when I become President with full authority in three months, inshaa Allah.”
Dr Bawumia also asked that if he, who has never been president before, is being asked to implement his vision now as Vice President, then what about former President Mahama, who, even as a former President, wants to come back?
“Why didn’t he do all those things he wants to come back and do when he was president? He has been president before with full authority, and he could have done all the things he is mentioning now.
“I have never been president before, and I have never had full authority before. That is why I have come up with my own new ideas.”
Black Stars midfielder,Mohammed Kudusdelivered an impressive display in West Ham United’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace, marking their first win of the season.
In a standout moment, Kudus showcased his exceptional skill by manoeuvring through five Crystal Palace defenders after receiving the ball deep in his own half.
His dazzling run ended with a foul high up the field, relieving West Ham from defensive pressure.
Kudus was a dynamic force on the left wing, leading the game with six successful dribbles, achieving a perfect pass completion rate, and dominating with nine duels won.
While he didn’t find the back of the net, his contributions were vital in the win at Selhurst Park on Saturday, August 24, 2024.
Goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen in the second half secured the win for West Ham, redeeming themselves after a loss to Aston Villa in their previous match.
Kuduscame close to scoring in the first half, but his right-footed shot from a loose ball in the box narrowly missed.
The former Ajax player played 88 minutes and earned a 7.5 rating from FotMob, solidifying his role as a key figure under new manager Julien Lopetegui.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate has taken a strong stand against John Dramani Mahama’s proposal to reinstate the licenses of certain defunct financial institutions.
During the NDC’s manifesto launch in Winneba, Mahama pledged to restore these licenses, alleging they were wrongfully revoked by the NPP administration.
In response, Dr. Bawumia, in a recent media interaction, expressed astonishment at Mahama’s promise.
He argued that the NPP’s interventions were crucial in safeguarding the savings of 4.6 million customers who faced potential losses had the banks not been restructured.
Dr. Bawumia detailed that many of the troubled banks had been involved in serious financial misconduct, including exceeding loan limits, mishandling capital, and misappropriating funds for personal ventures.
He emphasized that these measures were essential to avert a broader financial crisis and maintain stability in the banking sector.
He urged Mahama to review the findings of the Receiver and the Bank of Ghana reports for a comprehensive understanding of the situation before making further statements.
“We saved the deposits of 4.6 million bank depositors who really were going to lose their deposits if those banks were not saved. I don’t understand whether the former president has taken his time to understand the banking sector. Some atrocious things and this is why these banks had to be saved.
“They were not collapsed, they were merged into other banks and no banking depositor lost 1 cedi, everybody maintained. But very bad things happened, some of the banks broke all the rules and extended loans way above the single obligor limits.”
“They were given, in some cases 1 billion by the Bank of Ghana to help them out of the mess and they only got deeper into the situation. Other banks were given capital to save the situation, and they used that money to set up Capital Bank, instead of rescuing the problem that they had. They took the money from the central bank and set up another business which also collapsed. Some took money and invested in private properties.”
“So, it was against this background that the governor came to report, and this was one of my nightmares in the last eight years. Most people didn’t understand how close we were to a collapse of the entire banking system.
This is how we had to merge many of these banking sectors into other banks, and we saved 4.6 million depositors.”
“I’ll ask the former president if he hasn’t read, to go and read the receiver’s report or theBoG’s reportand acquaint himself before making any further comments on matters he clearly doesn’t understand.
He needs to get an understanding before making further comments, and he cannot hand over a bank’s license to them, this is subject to legal procedure.
Australian workersnow have legal protection against work-related intrusions into their personal time, thanks to a newly implemented “right to disconnect” law.
This regulation, which took effect on Monday, ensures that employees cannot be penalized for ignoring work emails, texts, or calls outside of their official work hours.
The law is a response to the increasing overlap between professional and personal lives, a trend that has intensified since the COVID-19 pandemic blurred the lines between home and the workplace.
Advocates of the policy argue that it empowers employees to reclaim their personal time without fear of repercussions, pushing back against the growing expectation to remain available beyond the workday.
“Before we had digital technology there was no encroachment, people would go home at the end of a shift and there would be no contact until they returned the following day,” said John Hopkins, an associate professor at Swinburne University of Technology.
“Now, globally it’s the norm to have emails, SMS, phone calls outside those hours, even when on holiday.”
In 2023, Australians clocked an average of 281 hours of unpaid overtime, with the Australia Institute estimating this time’s worth at approximately A$130 billion ($88 billion).
Australia has now joined a select group of around 24 countries, primarily across Europe and Latin America, that have enacted similar “right to disconnect” laws.
France was a trailblazer in this area, introducing such legislation in 2017. A notable enforcement of this law occurred the following year when Rentokil Initial faced a €60,000 ($66,700) fine for demanding constant availability from an employee.
Rachel Abdelnour, an advertising professional, welcomed the new regulations, noting that they would significantly enhance her ability to unplug from work, particularly in an industry where client schedules often diverge from traditional working hours.
“I think it’s actually really important that we have laws like this,” she told Reuters.
“We spend so much of our time connected to our phones, connected to our emails all day, and I think that it’s really hard to switch off as it is.”
REFUSALS MUST BE REASONABLE
The new regulations in Australia include provisions for handling emergencies and roles with unconventional hours, allowing employers to reach out to their employees. Workers, however, can refuse to respond if the request is deemed unreasonable.
The Fair Work Commission (FWC) will be responsible for determining what constitutes a reasonable refusal, taking into account the employee’s job responsibilities, personal situation, and the nature of the contact.
The FWC has the authority to enforce compliance through cease and desist orders and can impose fines up to A$19,000 for individuals and A$94,000 for businesses.
Despite these measures, the Australian Industry Group, representing employers, argues that the lack of clarity in the application of these rules could lead to confusion and reduced workplace flexibility. They warn that this could potentially hinder economic progress and impact business operations
“The laws came literally and figuratively out of left field, were introduced with minimal consultation about their practical effect and have left little time for employers to prepare,” the group said on Thursday.
The president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions Michele O’Neil said the caveat built into the law meant it won’t interfere with reasonable requests. Instead, it will stop workers from paying the price for poor planning by management, she said.
She cited an unidentified worker who finished a shift at midnight, only to be texted four hours later and told to be back at work by 6 a.m.

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has lauded the Gold for Oil programme, calling it a game-changing initiative that averted a potential economic crisis.
He stressed that the programme’s effective implementation was instrumental in safeguarding the nation from financial ruin.
During a media engagement on Sunday, August 25, the NPP’s flagbearer said, “Without the gold purchase programme and the gold for oil programme, this economy would have collapsed.”
In an interview with Citi Business News, Dr. Edwin Alfred Provencal, Managing Director of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), firmly stated that theGold for Oil initiative has been pivotal in averting potential fuel shortages, akin to the crisis currently unfolding in Nigeria.
Dr. Provencal defended the programme against critics, arguing that its success since launch disproves the doubts of industry skeptics who have suggested its termination.
He emphasized that the initiative has not only stabilized Ghana’s fuel supply but has also played a significant role in bolstering economic growth.
Launched on January 15, 2023, the Gold for Oil Programme commenced with the arrival of its first shipment, consisting of 40,000 metric tonnes of diesel worth $40 million.
Theprogramme’s core objectiveis to leverage foreign exchange resources from the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase (DGP) initiative to secure the foreign currency needed to import petroleum products, a cost that currently amounts to approximately $350 million monthly.
Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has shown its backing for a policy proposed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that promises to set a fixed rate on imported spare parts if the party wins the December 7 elections.
This policy was unveiled by NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama during the party’s manifesto launch at the University of Education, Winneba, on August 24.
Mahama emphasized that the fixed rate would bring more transparency to the fees levied on imported vehicle consignments.
In an interview with Citi News, the association’s communications head, Takyi Addo, acknowledged the NDC’s proposal, noting that while the association is open to the idea, they are still carefully evaluating the policies of both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) before reaching a final decision on which party to support.
“Four months ago, former president [John Dramani] Mahama came to Abossey Okai to meet the spare parts dealers and we mentioned fixed rates. That is going to solve at least, some of our challenges at the port. It [fixed rate] is a constant value.
The 20-foot containerwhich we paid 5000 is fixed. It can be there. 10 years, 15 years—it is fixed. It is there. It doesn’t change. So I think fixed rates are going to solve some of our problems at the port.
“So we welcome it. It is very good and so we embrace it. So far, we are going through their [the NDC’s] manifesto. None of them [political parties] can solve our problem at a go but gradually, we will get there.
“We are going to digest and go through all the two major political parties manifestoes, and we will come out with strong statements.”
Keta Municipal Hospital has officially opened a Renal Dialysis Centre aimed at easing the burden on kidney patients in need of dialysis treatment.
This facility was made possible through the generous funding of Togbi Tenge Dzokoto Gligui VII, the Dufia of Anyako-Konu and Paramount Chief of the Amugo-Vego Traditional Area in the Volta Region.
During the inauguration, Togbi Gligui expressed that the new centre would not only improve healthcare services but also become a place where empathy is transformed into tangible care for those in need.
He said: “All must come together to affirm the idea that no one should endure such a hardship of kidney disease alone.”
“Dr Paul Farmer, a medical anthropologist and physician profoundly stated that the idea that some lives matter less is a root of all that is wrong with the world. These words keep me strong always.”
The newly established Renal Dialysis Centre at Keta Municipal Hospital aims to embody a future where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to quality healthcare and essential support.
Togbi Tenge Dzokoto Gligui VII, who funded the facility, emphasized this vision during its inauguration.
Togbi Gligui also expressed deep gratitude to his wife, Mama Tenge, their children, and the medical professionals whose dedication made the creation of the centre possible.
He urged the hospital staff and management to maintain the facility diligently, ensuring it fulfills its purpose of providing much-needed care.
Receiving the centre, Dr. Emmanuel Kona, the Keta Municipal Director of Health, and Dr. Kofi Karikari Bonsu, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, assured that the unit would be used effectively to deliver the intended outcomes.
Three specially trained doctors have been assigned to operate the facility.
This Renal Dialysis Centre is the first of its kind in the Southern belt and only the second in the entire Volta Region.
Presidential Candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has firmly stated that he is undeterred by the criticism and insults that often come his way in the political sphere.
He emphasized that his dedication to serving the people of Ghana remains unwavering, and that negative commentary will not distract him from his objectives.
“When you are in politics, it’s part of the course. In a sense, there’s not much you can do. People, just for no reason, but for their own parochial reasons, will insult you.
“But as long as it doesn’t stop me from doing what I want to do for the people of Ghana, I will not be perturbed,” he said.
Dr Bawumia has been under scrutiny since he became the flagbearer of the governing NPP with many of his critics accusing him of being a liar.
However, speaking at a media engagement on Sunday, Dr Bawumia stated that he remains focused on his objectives and determination to push forward with his agenda for national development.
“As they keep insulting me, I’ll keep getting things done for our people,” he asserted.
Former Deputy Youth Organiser of theNational Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region, Eric Dadson, has passed away, leaving the party in mourning. Dadson’s death occurred on Friday, August 23, 2024, though the cause remains undisclosed.
NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, known affectionately as General Mosquito, confirmed the unfortunate news during the party’s manifesto launch in Winneba on Saturday.
Expressing deep shock, Nketia led party members in a solemn minute of silence to honor Dadson’s memory.
He praised Dadson for his unwavering dedication and significant contributions to the party across various roles, emphasizing the loss felt by the NDC community.
Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have issued a stern warning against the use of their names to heighten political tension as the country gears up for the 2024 elections.
This follows allegations that the Armed Forces had plans to stage a coup if the 2024 elections became too violent for the Ghana Police Service to manage, similar to concerns raised during press conferences held in 2016 and 2020.
GAF in a statement released on Friday, August 23, 2024, denied allegations of a coup plot by its outfit adding that it would only intervene in the 2024 elections once it is called on by the Ghana Police Service, a move which is not tantamount to an overthrow.
“GAF wishes to call on civil society groups and the media to desist from using its name to heighten political tension in the country.
We wish to draw the attention of the public that GAF will only support the Ghana Police when the latter requests for assistance and that does not constitute an overthrow of a government” the statement read.
The Military went on to call on all stakeholders to ensure that all Ghanaians feel secured and safe while they exercise their legal rights in selecting new leaders.
“We wish to urge all stakeholders to join hands in ensuring that all citizens feel free and safe to undertake their lawful activities in an atmosphere of tranquillity.
GAF, like all peace-loving institutions and individuals, is looking forward to peaceful elections come December 2024. We therefore call on all institutions and groups not to associate GAF with anything that has the potential of heightening political tension in the country”.
Refuting claims of staging a coup on December 7, GAF announced its commitment to thwart any effort by a group, individual or institution that will make any such attempt.
“We wish to make it clear that GAF has no intention to stage a coup and will prevent and resist any individual, group or organisation seeking to unlawfully take over the power of government either acting alone or in collaboration with any security agency” it warned.
Communications Director for the Dr. Bawumia 2024 presidential campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has sharply criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC)following their manifesto launch in Winneba on August 24, 2024.
Aboagye took to Facebook the same day, branding the NDC’s manifesto as a “COPYFESTO,” alleging that the party had plagiarized several key ideas from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) previous manifestos.
In his post, which quickly gained traction online, Aboagye accused former President John Mahama and the NDC of repackaging policies from the NPP and presenting them as their own.
He pointed out specific areas where he believed the NDC had lifted ideas, including health, housing, job creation, and the use of Starlink technology to enhance education.
The accusation has sparked a lively debate, with supporters and critics of both parties weighing in on the originality and authenticity of the NDC’s proposals.
Some have echoed Aboagye’s claims, while others have defended the NDC, insisting that their manifesto reflects genuine and innovative solutions for the country.

In an interview on Joy Prime’s afternoon program, Changes, on Friday, Lloyd shared insights into how he successfully built his new team and navigated the challenges of this transition.
“It started off with King Promise’s performance at TGMA. I was asked to call people. So, I reached out to Danny and others to help me and they did. After the performance I was like do I let them go?
Because I saw real talents. Do I want to be betrayed? But I just allowed myself and prayed to God about it and look at us hear,” he said.
Initially starting with a small team of just five dancers, Dancegod Lloyd’s group has expanded to around twenty members. This growth has inspired him to establish a dance academy, aiming to cultivate and discover new talent.
Drawing from his previous experiences, Lloyd is now more prudent in his professional interactions.
To ensure the smooth operation of his new venture, he has enlisted the help of specialists, including legal experts, to manage the business side, allowing him to concentrate on the artistic direction.
“I was scared in the beginning but now there’s a structure. I have a lot of people that are helping me with this thing. I know I’m really good with young talents and taking care of them but I can’t do everything myself. I have lawyers and people who are really invested in businesses.
So now it’s more like a business than just having fun. So, I think about the art and the other people think about the business. It’s a school,” he added.
Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has called for a thorough investigation into the current leadership at the Sports Ministry, headed by Mr Mustapha Ussif, citing concerns over potential financial mismanagement and corruption.
In a recent interview with ChannelOne TV, held during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Manifesto launch in Winneba, Afriyie Ankrah expressed his dismay over the lack of accountability regarding recent financial scandals.
His remarks were particularly pointed following various controversies surrounding Ghana’s involvement in international sports events, such as the 2023 AFCON and the hosting of the 2023 African Games.
A significant point of contention is a reported $3.6 million payment made to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation for coverage of the African Games.
Afriyie Ankrah, who faced intense scrutiny after Ghana’s poor performance in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, voiced his frustration that the current administration has yet to face similar scrutiny despite these financial issues.
“These people, they went to where AFCON, all the mess. Why is it that they have not been investigated? President (John) Mahama investigated me. [I was his campaign manager] Live everybody saw it. Of course they should be investigated.”
Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahamahas reiterated his promise to cancel the teachers’ licensure exams and integrate the licensing process into their final year examination when elected on December 7.
Also, the former President has said he will institute the “Teacher Dabr3” Project to provide accommodation facilities for teachers within their schools.
Speaking at the NDC manifesto launch in Winneba on Saturday, Mr Mahama explained that the initiative will ensure that all new school projects will have accommodation attached.
Again, Mr Mahama promised to implement a 20 percent basic salary which is a special allowance for teachers & health workers who accept postings to rural and underserved communities.
He said the next NDC government will “expand infrastructure to ensure prompt employment of nurses, health workers and teachers.
“Assist teachersto own vehicles of their choice by offering flexible duty payment arrangements and employer guarantees in partnership with teacher unions and the banking sector.”
A tragicbus accident near Kwahu Atibiemountain has claimed the life of one and left 62 others in critical condition. The incident occurred when the bus, registered as GE 7652-15 and owned by Monack Football Club from Ningo Prampram, overturned while descending the mountain.
The exact cause of the crash remains unclear. According to reports, the bus was transporting football players back home after a tournament in Kwahu Obo when the accident happened.
Five players were initially trapped under the wreckage. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, including the Nkawkaw Fire Command and local road users, one player succumbed to their injuries.
The survivors were promptly taken to Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital and Kenop Care Hospital, where they are receiving urgent medical attention.
The Nkawkaw fire service commander, D02 Samuel Mante said, “A bus carrying footballers from Ningo Prampram was involved in a tragic accident this dawn, as they were leaving after a match.
“Upon arriving at the scene, we found 63 people, including one fatality and several others with severe injuries. We promptly mobilized the injured to the hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.”
Some drivers who helped in the rescue mission urged the government to fix streetlights on the stretch to help in the reduction of accidents, especially at night.
“We’re facing a significant challenge here, particularly as drivers. The absence of streetlights in this area makes it extremely difficult for us to navigate during nighttime hours, posing a serious safety risk,” one of the driver stated, the report said

Former President John Dramani Mahama, leading the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2024 general elections, has introduced a series of ambitious proposals as part of the party’s manifesto.
These plans, presented during a launch event in Winneba on August 24, 2024, aim to address critical areas such as overhauling the education system, implementing stringent anti-corruption initiatives, and improving land administration and management.
Here are some key highlights of the manifesto:
1.Cancellation of the double-track system:
John Dramani Mahama has promised to abolish the double-track system currently in place in senior high schools.
This system, implemented by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2018, was designed to manage the increased student population resulting from the Free Senior High School (FSHS) program.
Mahama’s plan includes upgrading the infrastructure of secondary schools and improving the FSHS program’s execution. His goal is to eliminate the need for the double-track system altogether, ensuring a more streamlined and effective educational experience.
2.Ban on family and appointees from acquiring state assets:
John Dramani Mahama has pledged to reinvestigate past incidents of electoral violence and related crimes if elected.
He specifically mentioned revisiting the 2020 election-related violence, the disturbances during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, and the tragic murder of journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale.
Mahama has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the current government’s lack of action on these unresolved cases and its failure to compensate the victims. He promised to seek justice for those affected and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
3. Overhaul of the scholarship scheme:
The NDC flagbearer has pledged to reform the government scholarship programme, which he claims has been compromised by state officials applying for benefits intended for the underprivileged.
According to him, under his administration, no government official or political appointee will be allowed to apply for scholarships.
4. Reopening of unresolved electoral cases:
John Dramani Mahama has pledged to reinvestigate past incidents of electoral violence and related crimes if elected. He specifically mentioned revisiting the 2020 election-related violence, the disturbances during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, and the tragic murder of journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale.
Mahama has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the current government’s lack of action on these unresolved cases and its failure to compensate the victims. He promised to seek justice for those affected and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
5. Commission of inquiry on State Lands
In reaction to claims of state land mismanagement by the current government, John Dramani Mahama has pledged to set up a Commission of Inquiry. This proposed body will investigate accusations of state land misappropriation, with a special emphasis on the contentious Ga-Dangbe land issues.
The commission will be charged with uncovering the facts behind these allegations and providing actionable recommendations to address the ongoing challenges in public land administration.
President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has offered high praise for the latest manifesto from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), calling it “innovative, accessible, and inclusive.”
Unveiled on August 24, the manifesto sets out the NDC’s strategic objectives for Ghana, including proposals to eliminate certain taxes, probe the 2020 election-related violence, and prevent political appointees from acquiring state assets.
In a social media update, Cudjoe highlighted the manifesto’s focus on enhancing gender equality, particularly its commitment to allocating 30% of public sector positions to women.
He also applauded the initiative to combat period poverty, noting that it could significantly improve educational opportunities and self-esteem for young girls.
Additionally, Cudjoe endorsed the NDC’s proposed fiscal reform and economic summit, describing these measures as “pragmatic and forward-thinking.”
However, he noted that his team will conduct a deeper analysis to quantify the value of the proposed 24-hour economy.
Mr. Cudjoe emphasised the need for good governance, advocating for a shift from concentrating power and resources for personal gain to prioritising the needs of the people.
Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho has voiced strong criticism against the party’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
This backlash follows Mahama’s comments during the NDC’s manifesto unveiling event held in Winneba on August 24, 2024.
In his address, Mahama cited insights from investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni’s latest book,The President Ghana Never Got, to target President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
During the event, Mahama took a swipe at President Akufo-Addo, mockingly labeling him as “The President Ghana Never Got.”
He accused the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration of poor governance, stating that their tenure has made life unbearable for Ghanaians.

“Most Ghanaians will agree that Nana Akufo-Addo is indeed the President Ghana never got. Indeed, I dare say, his much-touted economic whiz kid, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is also the economic messiah Ghana never got,” Mahama stated during his address.
However, Koku Anyidoho has voiced his dissatisfaction with Mahama’s remarks. He argues that Mahama’s allusion to the book might inadvertently suggest that the former president had some involvement in its production, stirring unnecessary speculation.
“When you refuse to exercise deep discretion, and use the title of a recently launched book this way, would people not be allowed to speculate that you had a hand in the manufacturing of the book? I wrote speeches for Candidate/Prez Mills so I know what I’m talking about. SMH,” Anyidoho questioned in a social media post on the same day.
He added, “Irony: he has decided to be the promoter of the book titled ‘The President Ghana Never Got’ while his brother is threatening to go to court over the same book.
The spirit of confusionis certainly hovering over a certain family,” he said in a social media post on August 24, 2024.
President of the policy think tank IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has urged the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to adopt a more realistic and analytical approach to his campaign promises.
During the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on August 18, Dr. Bawumia vowed to cut transportation costs by 40% through the introduction of electric vehicles.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, Mr. Cudjoe critically assessed the feasibility of this pledge, raising doubts about the practicality of such a policy.
He highlighted the lack of necessary infrastructure to support electric vehicles, including concerns about maintenance, accessibility, and the readiness of Ghanaians to transition to this new technology.
Mr. Cudjoe also pointed to Dr. Bawumia’s previous unmet promises, such as providing vehicles for Okada riders, suggesting that a more gradual and realistic approach to policy implementation would be more effective.
He advised Dr. Bawumia to consider a balanced energy strategy that includes traditional energy sources alongside clean energy initiatives.
Additionally, Mr. Cudjoe expressed disappointment that the manifesto failed to address the country’s current economic difficulties, questioning the viability of the proposed private sector partnerships as a solution.
“I don’t doubt the fact that we need to move to the electric vehicle system and all that, but do we have the infrastructure yet? How many people can hop on such buses?
Do we have a proper way of maintaining them? I think those little things, if we don’t do them quite well, that’s what will come back and bite Bawumia quite well.”
“You remember when he promised that Okada people were going to be using cars, we haven’t heard anything on that yet and it’s important that he takes baby steps in some of these things. I think he should rather draw on the traditional source of energy rather than this fixation on clean energy or transition element of our energy space.”
“I would have wished I heard a lot more on how we can get out of the chaos his administration has led us into, but unfortunately I didn’t hear anything like that so it makes me wonder whether the plan they have in place with private sector side, whether they are going to deliver.”
Despite Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins missing key chances in the first half, the teams went into the break level at 0-0.
Arsenal turned the game around in the second half with two quick goals.
Leandro Trossard, who had just come off the bench, broke the deadlock in the 68th minute, calmly finishing past Villa’s goalkeeper, Emi Martinez, to give the visitors the lead.
Ten minutes later, Thomas Partey sealed the win for Arsenal.
Latching onto a pass from Bukayo Saka at the edge of the box, Partey delivered a precise shot into the bottom corner, doubling the Gunners’ advantage.
This victory marked Arsenal’s second win of the season, with Partey playingthe full 90 minutes in both of their opening matches.
This forum, Mahama explained, will be crucial in crafting a comprehensive four-year fiscal consolidation plan aimed at stabilizing the economy.
He emphasized that the proposed program would serve as a cornerstone of his broader economic recovery strategy.
Mahama made these commitments during his address at theNDC’s 2024 Manifesto Launch, held at the University of Education, Winneba, on August 24, 2024.
Economic policies
Implement a 24-hour economy strategy with three (3) shifts of eight (8) hours each to maximize productivity and efficiency, transform Ghana into an import substitution and export-led economy, enhance access to public services, and create more well-paying jobs for unemployed Ghanaians.
Stop the economic decline and restore stability and inclusive growth to the economy.
Provide opportunities for experienced banking professionals who lost their jobs after the collapse of banks to secure their careers once more and move from the menial jobs they were forced into.
Abolish the obnoxious e-levy and review the levy imposed on bet winnings. With improved revenues from the savings made from a reduced size of government, an anti-corruption fight, fast-tracked operationalization of new oil and gas wells, increased investment in the mining sector, and a revamped cocoa sector, we can ease the heavy tax burden that has been placed on Ghanaian households and businesses.
Actively attract viable and serious private sector investors to partner with the government to invest in productive sectors for job creation.
Relocate some ministries out of the central business area to decongest the city of Accra. This will involve an emphasis on agriculture and agribusiness and will have a strong focus on making Ghanaians own their micro-enterprises.
Lead a process to set a standardized limit for borrowing and ensure that Ghana never suffers such a deadly debt management program that threatens to send elderly people holding government bonds to their early graves and wipe out the investments of the Ghanaian middle class.
Transform the economy, diversify our exports, and ensure value addition to create more jobs from January 2025.
Add value to our cocoa by increasing domestic processing, refining our gold before export, and pursuing the dream of an integrated bauxite and alumina industry.
Bring VALCO, TOR, and other strategic industries that can serve as extra pillars for our economy onstream.
Build a modernized agricultural economy driven by technology and digitalization and establish agribusiness as one of the key anchors of our economic transformation plan.
Introduce a new budget in April 2025to support small and medium-scale businesses and adjust some taxes.
Ghana Football Association (GFA) has initiated discussions with Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro, a talented Dutch-born goalkeeper of Ghanaian heritage, in an effort to secure his commitment to play for Ghana.
Owusu-Oduro, who currently serves as the first-choice goalkeeper for AZ Alkmaar, is also part of the Dutch youth national teams and has represented the Netherlands at both U-16 and U-21 levels.
At 19, Owusu-Oduro is making significant strides in his club career, catching the attention of the GFA, which is keen on bringing him into the fold of the Black Stars.
However, the young goalkeeper finds himself at a crossroads, contemplating whether to switch his allegiance to Ghana, his father’s homeland, or to continue his journey with the Dutch national team.
Reports suggest that theGFA is in active negotiations with Owusu-Oduro’s representatives, exploring every possible avenue to persuade him to don the Ghanaian jersey.
NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has vowed to overhaul the government scholarship program, ensuring that it is no longer exploited by those with conflicts of interest.
Speaking at the launch of the NDC’s manifesto, Mahama criticized the current system, which he said has been misused by state officials who can easily afford to fund their children’s education.
He promised that under his leadership, no government official or political appointee would be eligible to apply for the scholarship, aiming to restore the program’s original intent of assisting the underprivileged.
Mahama condemned the present state of the program as riddled with “kalabule” (corruption) and stressed the importance of making the application process fair and transparent.
Mahama stated, “Government scholarships have been fraught with a lot of ‘kalabule,’ meaning deceit. We want to streamline it, and as I’ve said, persons with conflicts of interest will not be allowed to apply for the scholarships.
None of my ministers will do it.”
“Any political appointee must not apply for the scholarships, you must pay. Children under privilege, those who cannot afford it are the ones who must get the scholarship.”
The former deputy education minister accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of deceiving “God, the clergy, and the Ghanaian people.”
Addressing the controversial National Cathedral project, Ablakwa criticized the government for demolishing numerous structures, only to create what he described as “the most expensive hole in the world.”
Ablakwa made these remarks during the launch of the NDC’s 2024 Manifesto in Winneba, Central Region, on Saturday, August 24, 2024.
He recounted how “in the process” of actualizing the president’s personal religious dream, “so many edifices were demolished,” including, but not limited to, “the judiciary training institute, judges’ bungalows, scholarship secretariat, passport head office, and the Malian ambassador’s residence.”
“Did you ever hear Mahama say he woke up with a nightmare and so has decided to make a personal pledge, and so he’s going to sink 58.1 million dollars into the world’s most expensive pit?” Ablakwa quizzed.
He described Mahama as a nation-builder who, during his presidency, built “the University of Ghana Medical Centre, Ridge Hospital, Shai-Osudoku Hospital, Terminal 3 at the Kotoka International Airport, Kumasi Airport, Tamale Airport, Ho Airport,” etc., comparing him to the current president, who “is demolishing, destroying in a deceptive pledge where he says he will not use our taxes.”
“How can you say these two people are the same and that these two parties are the same?” Ablakwa asked in admonishment.
The notion that the NDC and NPPare the same is “baseless and unfounded,” he stressed. “The NDC is different.”
Electoral Commission (EC)has addressed concerns over the recent theft of a biometric verification device (BVD) and reassured the public about the security of the upcoming 2024 elections.
Following the arrest of an individual in Nsawam on Friday, August 23, who was found with a stolen BVD, the EC issued a statement on Saturday, August 24.
Samuel Tettey, the Commission’s Deputy Chairman of Operations, clarified that while the device is important for voter identification, it lacks the capability to undermine the election process.
Tettey emphasized that BVDs are solely used for confirming voter identities and do not have any functions that could alter or disrupt the election’s integrity.
The EC’s statement indicated that though one needs an activation code and other security clearance to fully utilise a BVD, it is conducting its “own internal investigations and will collaborate with the police to bring this matter to its logical conclusion.”
Below is the EC’s full statement.
RE: MAN ARRESTED IN NSAWAM WITH A BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION DEVICE (BVD)
The attention of the Electoral Commission has been drawn to an incident in Nsawam in which a man was arrested on Friday, 23rd August, 2024 in possession of a Biometric Verification Device (BVD). The Commission takes this incident of an unauthorised person in possession of a BVD very seriously.
The Commission would like to assure the General Public and all Stakeholders that a stolen BVD cannot jeopardise the integrity of the 2024 Elections.
We are conducting our own internal investigations and will collaborate with the Police to bring this matter to its logical conclusion.
In the meantime, the Commission would like to address the General Public on this matter as follows:
The Public may recall that following the theft of five (5) Laptops which formed part of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) Kits from our stores in April 2024, as well as the vandalization of five (5) BVDs and theft of two (2) BVDs from Tarkwa Nsuaem District and North Tongu District respectively during the December 2023 District Level Elections (DLEs), the Commission explained that a BVD in the hands of an unauthorised person cannot be used to compromise an election. It does not affect the integrity of an election. It is nothing more than an off-the-shelf device and cannot be used to compromise an election, without the necessary technical and security protocols.
The Electoral Commission undertakes a deliberate process of preparing a Biometric Verification Device (BVD) for any election that ensures that ONLY BVDs that are prepared for a particular election can be used for that election. This process is robust and is not vulnerable to manipulation. The possession of a BVD that has not gone through this rigorous process that is yet to happen for the 2024 Elections does not affect the integrity of the Elections.
The voter verification application is designed such that it only works with data that is prepared, audited, encrypted, and signed by a Secure Process. Access to this process is highly restricted. Without access to this Secure Process, Voter Data cannot be generated to work with the BVD.
The Data that is loaded onto the BVDs are set to be activated for a particular Election Day. A stolen BVD therefore cannot work in the December 2024 Elections. The BVD, as part of its Start-Up Process, checks for the integrity of the Data that is loaded onto it. If the Voter Data on the BVD has been altered in any way, the StartUp Process is halted and the BVD will not work.
Activation of the BVDs involves the use of Activation Codes that can only be downloaded from the EC’s Secure System. This system is restricted to Election Officials with the right Access Credentials. A BVD without its Activation Code cannot be used for the verification of Voters.
The Data that is loaded onto the BVD must conform with the details of Voters on the Voters Register for each Polling Station. This data is not static and changes with every Election Cycle. Since the Voters Register for various Polling Stations for the 2024 Elections will be different from previous Elections, any data on a BVD that was activated for a previous Election will not conform with the Voters Register at the particular Polling Station on December 7, 2024.
BVDs are used ONLY to verify voters. They are not used to vote. Political Party Agents observe the packing of election materials, including BVDS. They record the Serial Numbers of BVDs that are deployed at each Polling Station.
Additionally, the Serial Numbers of the BVDs that are used on Election Day are recorded on the Statement of Poll (Pink Sheet) for each Polling Station. This provides further evidence as to which specific BVDs were used to verify Voters at each Polling Station.
The Commission urges the Police to do everything in their power to unravel the circumstances surrounding the BVD that was found in the possession of the person arrested on Friday. The Commission stands in readiness to work with the Police in its investigations.
Founder of the All People’s Congress (APC),Hassan Ayariga, recently recounted his experience at the Tema Harbour while clearing vehicles for his 2024 election campaign.
He revealed that he was billed GH¢400,000 to clear one of the cars, with GH¢40,000 of that total being attributed to a COVID-19 Levy.
In an interview ,Mr Ayariga claimed that “Till date, government of Ghana is still charging people COVID Levy, so what are you telling me? I just cleared my car. I paid almost GH¢400,000 to clear one car and the COVID charges on it was almost GH¢40,000.”
When asked about the type of car, Ayariga said that it was a standard four-wheel drive intended for his campaign.
“It was just a normal four-wheel drive for my campaign and each car had a duty; some depending on the duty. Some, I paid GH¢16,000, some GH¢22,000 and some GH¢30 and 40,000 COVID Levy,” he noted.
Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has issued a stern warning that government officials involved in corrupt practices will face strict accountability if John Dramani Mahama secures victory in the upcoming December elections.
He emphasized that a new era of transparency and responsibility is on the horizon.
In a conversation with TV3 prior to the NDC’s manifesto launch in Winneba on Saturday, August 24, 2024, Dafeamekpor highlighted that the manifesto will directly tackle key issues affecting Ghanaians, including rampant corruption and the influence of powerful individuals over the state.
He further assured that the next NDC government under Mahama’s leadership will make addressing the country’s high unemployment rate a top priority.
“Any government appointee, be it under Akufo-Addo or Mahama, if you misconduct yourself on grounds of corruption, you will not have it easy, a new regime of accountability,” he said.
He added that, “The manifesto will focus on issues of corruption, state capture, issues of great concern to every Ghanaian, job creation.”
South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor emphasized the NDC’s strong history in combating corruption, pointing to instances during John Mahama’s previous administration where officials involved in corrupt activities were promptly dismissed.
The NDC has framed its 2024 manifesto launch as a crucial turning point in their mission to free the nation from longstanding challenges.
The party views this event as the beginning of a comprehensive effort to address the issues that have hindered the country’s progress for far too long.
Member of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the African Games, Dan Kwaku Yeboah, has strongly defended the expenditure on the recent event hosted in Ghana, dismissing calls for financial scrutiny.
Yeboah contends that hosting such large-scale events has never been a profitable venture for any nation, and Ghana is no different.
He emphasized that the primary advantage of hosting the Games lies in the development of infrastructure, which will position Ghana favorably for future sporting bids.
Yeboah stressed that the long-term benefits, including improved facilities, outweigh the immediate financial concerns.
“The propaganda that people are doing is that, Ghana did not profit from the African Games. You don’t get any benefit from hosting African Games.
He noted that a major benefit of hosting the Games is infrastructure, which will help in developing other sporting disciplines in the long run.
“The NDC MPs that are calling for the probing, are the beneficiaries? The key benefit you get from hosting the African Games is the infrastructure to develop other sports.
So the argument we did not make any profit, there is no profit from hosting the African Games. When Mali decided to host it, they couldn’t get the funds and lost the hosting right to Morocco.”
He emphasised that due to the infrastructural benefit from the Games, Ghana have bid to host the African Athletics Championship.
“No one has hosted the African Games and declared profit since 1965. The benefit is that due to the infrastructure Ghana has bid to host the African Championship.
Ghana can now host the Rugby Championship, Ghana can host the swimming championship because we have an international standard swimming pool. That is our benefit.”
The ace broadcaster clarified that he is not defending people who might have embezzled funds.
“I’ve not said that they shouldn’t arrest anybody for embezzlement. But you might think differently because it’s an election year and people are doing agenda. I dare anybody to prove to me that when Nigeria hosted it in 1973 they made a profit.”
Dan Kwaku Yeboah’s assertion is in relation to a $3 million broadcast rights saga between the Sports Ministry and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation for the Games.
The Ministry claimed they paid the aforementioned amount to GBC to broadcast the games, while GBC, in response, denied receiving the said amount, insisting that they earned $105,000.
Kenya’s recent decision to impose new tariffs on the import and export of cereals, legumes, herbs, and tubers has sparked widespread criticism from local traders.
They argue that these new levies breach regional trade agreements, including those set by the East African Community (EAC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa).
The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has introduced a 2% levy on the customs value of grain imports and a 0.3% levy on grain exports. Similar charges apply to legumes, while roots and tubers will face a 1% import duty and a 0.3% export levy.
Initially scheduled to take effect on July 1, the AFA postponed the implementation to August 12. The authority claims the new charges are intended to support small-scale local growers by leveling the playing field against imported goods.
The levies will be collected at entry or exit points, and traders who do not comply will incur a 25% penalty on overdue amounts after the first month.
Agayo Ogambi, CEO of the Shippers Council of East Africa, has criticized the levies as detrimental to businesses and an additional strain on farmers.
He stressed the need for more stakeholder discussions, warning that the new tariffs could drive up consumer prices and hinder the recovery of Kenyan farmers and exporters.
“The levies and more taxes on exports will make our products uncompetitive in East Africa and in Comesa as already Uganda and Tanzania are up in arms against the imposition of the levies,” said Mr Ogambi.
“While AFA needs to raise revenues for the services provided, considerations must be made not to hurt consumers and also not to outprice our exports in the international markets.”
The CEO said Kenya must take a decision to support its exports and reduce levies and charges as they are negatively affecting the import to export ratio, which has remained at 5 containers of imports to 1 container of exports.
Roy Mwanthi, the chairman of the Kenya International Freight & Warehousing Association (KIFWA), said rice importation has stopped since AFA imposed the levies on August 12 this year and it will affect households as the cost of rice is expected to increase.
“We anticipate serious shortage of rice and wheat due to the levies and those who import will have to pass the cost to consumers. Currently, rice from East African countries that would ordinarily be free are subject to high levies and is stuck in different border pints,” said Mr Mwanthi.
Mr. Mwanthi has criticized Kenya’s new tariffs on food crop imports and exports, calling them a significant obstacle to international trade. He argued that these additional taxes on essential food products could lead to increased prices and reduced import volumes.
Tanzanian traders have voiced their dissatisfaction with Kenya’s decision to impose a 2% levy on the customs value of cereals and pulses. They claim that this would result in additional costs of $153.923 (Ksh20,000) for a truckload of maize and $384.806 (Ksh50,000) for a truckload of rice, on top of existing fees for various regulatory services.
The total costs for importing food crops into Kenya are substantial. Traders are already paying $23,088 (Sh3,000) for an AFA import permit, $4,617 (Sh600) for an import permit fee, $57,721 (Sh7,500) for inspection by Kephis, $8.46 (Sh1,100) for port health and biosafety fees, and $55.41 (Sh7,200) for moisture and aflatoxin testing by Kebs.
In response to the backlash, AFA Director-General Bruno Linyiru announced that the government has temporarily suspended these new levies for a month. This pause will give the regulator time to address concerns from traders and adjust the policy if necessary.
General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Fiifi Kwetey has labelled Dr Bawumia’s promise to scrap taxes as a total deception citing the need for taxes in Ghana as a developing country.
His comments comes after vice president and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) pledge to scarp some taxes ad levies when voted into power in the 2024 elections.
On his part such promises are ones built on no anchor of truth as a nation like Ghana needs taxes.
Speaking during the party’s manifesto launch at Winneba earlier today, the General Secretary cautioned that, as parties gear up campaigns as parts of efforts to win the votes of voters come December 7 polls, parties shouldn’t take undue advantage of such opportunities to make false and still born promises to deceive the people for votes.
“We know for instance that when you say you want to change this country from taxation to production then we clearly know that you are stating a policy that is not anchored on truth.
You are lying because it is simply not possible in a developing country to tell people you want to remove taxation and simply have a country that is only for production that is not possible. Some amount of taxationwould definetely have to continue” he said.
