GFA not making Black Stars attractive enough for European-born Ghanaian players – Derek Boateng

Former Ghana international Derek Boateng has criticized the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for not doing enough to attract European-born Ghanaian players to the national team.

Despite the GFA’s success in recruiting talents like Inaki Williams, Tariq Lamptey, and Antoine Semenyo, Boateng argues that the Association needs a more structured approach to engage young European-born players to represent the four-time African champions.

In an interview, the former Fulham midfielder pointed out how countries like Germany proactively scout young players with German roots and nurture them for the national team.

Boateng expressed his frustration at seeing players of Ghanaian descent, such as Kobbie Mainoo, Jeremy Doku, Jeremie Frimpong, and Nico Williams, choose to represent European countries instead of Ghana.

Sharing his experiences from scouting trips in the USA, he observed other nations’ efforts to identify and develop young talent with roots in their respective countries.

He specifically noted Germany’s active scouting of young players with German heritage and their early integration to build a sense of national identity.

“I have been in the USA for scouting jobs multiple times and I have seen expatriates also joining to scout players, but they are doing that for their country. I know Germany is doing that.

“I was told that they are doing that because they want to bring all young players with roots in Germany and, after identifying them, they will camp them. By doing that, the players will know where they are coming from” Boateng told Kingdom FM.

He continued, “In Ghana, we don’t know how to do these things, and we keep losing players because we are not paying attention to how we can get them. How can we lose players like Kobbie Mainoo, Jeremy Doku, Jeremie Frimpong, and Nico Williams? Inaki is playing for us, but why couldn’t we get Nico? Because he is good and talented, Spain blocked his chances of playing for Ghana” Boateng lamented.

Boateng criticized the GFA’s reactive approach, emphasizing the need to engage players and their families from a young age rather than waiting until they have already begun their professional careers.

“We must do a lot more, and we shouldn’t wait until they are grown up and playing before we start talking to them. By then, their parents will not even allow it because we were not there from the beginning, so why now?” he quizzed.

  • South Africa’s ANC kick-out ex-President Zuma Reports

    South Africa’s ANC kick-out ex-President Zuma Reports

South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma has been expelled from the African National Congress (ANC), the party he once led, after campaigning for a rival party in the May 29 general election, according to local media reports.

The ANC’s disciplinary committee found him guilty of “prejudicing the integrity” of the party by aligning with uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK). He has been given three weeks to appeal the decision, as per a leaked ANC document cited by local media.

The ANC has yet to officially confirm Zuma’s expulsion, while MK has dismissed the disciplinary committee’s decision, calling it a ruling by a “kangaroo court.”

At 82, Zuma, an ANC veteran, fell out of favor with the party following his resignation as president in 2018 due to corruption scandals, though he has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

In January, Zuma was suspended by the ANC after forming MK, which now serves as an opposition party in parliament.

MK, in a statement, expressed shock at learning of Zuma’s expulsion through media reports.

The disciplinary proceedings were conducted “in a manner akin to a kangaroo court”, the party said.

“It is a foundational legal principle that no person, not even those accused of a serious crime, should be punished or sentenced in their absence,” it added.

The ANC’s disciplinary committee held a virtual hearing, which Jacob Zuma refused to attend, insisting on being physically present.

In 2021, Zuma was jailed for contempt of court for refusing to fully cooperate with an inquiry into corruption during his nine-year presidency.

His arrest triggered the deadliest riots since the end of apartheid in 1994, resulting in over 300 deaths. Zuma also faces corruption charges related to a 1999 arms deal.

South Africa’s current president, Cyril Ramaphosa, succeeded Zuma in 2018 with a pledge to clean up the government. However, in the May 29 elections, the ANC experienced its worst defeat in 30 years, forcing the ruling party into a coalition to retain power.

uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), meaning “spear of the nation,” emerged as the country’s third-largest party by capturing nearly 15% of the vote and securing 58 seats in the 400-member parliament, mostly at the expense of the ANC.

Zuma claims the election results were rigged and has called for the election to be annulled. Following the election, MK announced its intention to join an opposition alliance in parliament.

Okyenhene labels “Agyapadie” document as a complete fabrication

Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has strongly refuted a circulating document titled “Agyapadie” that features his image, calling it a complete fabrication.

He stated that the document is part of an ongoing hate campaign against the Ofori Panin household and Okyeman.

Speaking at a meeting of the Akyem Abuakwa State Council, the Okyenhene urged his people and all Ghanaians to dismiss the document, questioning the motives and sanity of those behind its creation.

The King of Akyem Abuakwa emphasized that the Ofori Panin Fie has always held a prominent position and has not engaged in any recent activities that would justify accusations of self-aggrandizement.

According to the Okyenhene, the Eastern Region had greater representation in former President Kufuor’s cabinet than in President Akufo-Addo’s, suggesting that the controversy aims to incite animosity towards the Akyem people.

He recalled similar tactics used during J.B. Danquah’s era and in 2016 when a document known as the “Akyem Project” was circulated to stir up discord between Okyeman and Asanteman.

The Okyenhene also dismissed rumors about his wealth.

“I have heard things in recent times. The funniest of it is that I am the richest chief in Ghana. I mean how? Anyway, when anyone regards you as a rich person, you must receive it. I receive it.”

    About the Agyapadie book

The Agyapadie book is a controversial document that has been circulating in Ghana, sparking debates and concerns among various groups.

The document allegedly outlines a strategy for the Akyem people to dominate Ghana’s economy, politics, and social structures. It’s claimed to contain plans for Akyems to control key sectors, including finance, commerce, and industry.

The book’s origins are unclear, but it’s believed to have been created by unknown individuals or groups.

The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has rejected the document’s authenticity and discredited its contents. He’s labeled it a fabrication and part of a long-standing hate campaign against the Ofori Panin household and Okyeman.

Netizens roast Sports Ministry over Baba Yara Sports Stadium’s hosting of 5-day church event

Ghanaian sports fans are furious over the National Sports Authority’s (NSA) decision to rent out the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for a five-day church event, leaving the pitch unprotected and susceptible to damage.

Currently, this stadium is the only CAF-approved venue in Ghana for international matches.

The NSA’s decision has ignited widespread anger, with social media flooded with images of the pitch being trampled by event participants.

Fans deem this move irresponsible, considering the importance of maintaining the stadium’s condition for international competitions.

Concerned supporters are urging authorities to take immediate steps to protect the pitch and ensure that Ghana’s CAF license remains intact.

Potential damage to the sole approved CAF stadium could have serious repercussions for Ghanaian football, impacting the national team’s ability to host international matches.

In response to the backlash, the NSA Ashanti Region has tried to assure fans that measures are in place to restore the pitch quickly.

However, this has not alleviated the fans’ anger, as they believe the pitch should have been safeguarded from the beginning to prevent any damage.

The incident has also highlighted the need for improved sports facilities in Ghana, with many calling for stricter measures to protect current venues.

We will vote you out whether you fix stadiums or not – Charles Taylor fires sports minister

Former Black Stars player Charles Taylor has voiced strong criticism of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, accusing him of failing to meet the expectations of Ghanaians.

Taylor expressed disappointment in the minister’s inability to maintain various sports complexes, noting that action was only taken after significant public backlash.

The former Kotoko player went as far as to label Mustapha Ussif as the worst sports minister in the nation’s history.

He also contended that the recent efforts to repair deteriorating stadiums will not be enough to convince voters to support the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming general elections.

“Six months to elections and they are now coming to fix the stadiums? This will not change our minds about deposing them from government.

He [Mustapha Ussif] is the worst minister who has managed our football. Look at the number of things that have been left to rot.

“The funds they get from FIFA and others they have used them. This minister does not respect footballers; he only regards the Black Stars.

He should be called Minister of Black Stars, not Sports,” he said on Angel TV.

This criticism follows the sports minister’s announcement that the government is taking steps to address the deteriorating state of several sports complexes, including the Essipong Sports Complex, Dormaa Sports Complex, Azumah Nelson, and Ho Sports Complex, after public backlash.

2024 Olympic Games committee sorry for mockery of Christians’ Lord’s Super at opening ceremony

The organizers of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games have issued an apology for certain scenes in the opening ceremony that received criticism from Christian groups.

Artistic director Thomas Jolly explained that the aim was to promote religious tolerance and inclusivity, not to offend. He stressed that the scenes were intended to depict pagan gods and their activities, not to ridicule Christianity.

Jolly clarified that there was no intention to “mock or denigrate anyone,” and that the scenes were meant to reference pagan deities.

“Clearly, there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. On the contrary, I think Thomas Jolly did try to intend to celebrate community tolerance. We believe this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offense, we, of course, are really sorry,” Paris 2024 spokeswoman Anne Descamps stated.

Jolly further elaborated that the goal was to create a grand pagan celebration connected to the gods of Olympus, with the intent of uniting people and affirming the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

The controversy emerged following a sequence featuring drag artists, which some Christian groups felt was a parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper.’

The Catholic Church in France criticized the ceremony, condemning it for including “scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity.”

Nigerian herbalist murders Ghanaian friend to make ritual soap for ‘sakawa boys’

A 50-year-old herbalist, Kehinde Ganiyu, has been apprehended for the murder of his Ghanaian friend, Emmanuel Collins.

Ganiyu is accused of killing Collins to produce ritual soap intended for use by internet fraudsters, known locally as ‘sakawa.’

The incident occurred last Thursday in Oba-Oke, situated in the Olorunda local government area of Osun State.

The Osun State Police Command presented the suspect, with Police Public Relations Officer Yemisi Opalola disclosing that Ganiyu was found with four blood-stained knives, a chisel, two gourds, a wooden traditional pot containing black soap, two sponges with black soap, a traditional tray (Opon Ifa), and local charms.

At a press briefing on Friday, July 26, Ganiyu confessed to the heinous crime, admitting that he murdered his close friend to create ritual soap.

“I visited my friend, Emmanuel Collins, because he was sick. While he was in bed, I took a knife and cut his throat. I used the part to prepare ritual money soap for Yahoo boys [known in Ghana as sakawa],” Ganiyu explained.

Ganiyu, who described himself as both a herbalist and a farmer, further confessed, “I used to make such rituals for Yahoo boys, but they usually brought the human parts. This time, I sourced the part myself” he stated.

After committing the gruesome murder, the suspect attended the funeral of his friend to bid him farewell.

“I regret my action because I also attended his burial, but suspicion and Police investigation led to my arrest. I can’t believe I killed my long time friend” Ganiyu cried.

  • FIFA bans Canada’s Olympic women’s football team coach, deduct points

FIFA bans Canada’s Olympic women’s football team coach, deduct points

Canada’s women’s football team has been penalized with a six-point deduction from their Olympic group and coach Bev Priestman has received a one-year ban after using a drone to spy on a rival team’s training sessions.

FIFA announced the sanctions, which also include a £175,720 fine for the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA), a day after English-born Priestman was dismissed as Canada’s Olympic head coach.

Additionally, CSA officials Joseph Lombardi and Jasmine Mander have been suspended by FIFA for a year.

FIFA stated that the Canadian team’s use of the drone was a “violation” of its principles.

“The officials were each found responsible for offensive behaviour and violation of the principles of fair play in connection with the CSA’s Women’s representative team’s drones usage in the scope of the Olympic football tournament,” said a Fifa statement.

Priestman “voluntarily” withdrew from her coaching duties for Canada’s opening game against the Kiwis after the New Zealand Olympic Committee reported a drone was flown over their training session on Monday.

Fifa and the CSA launched investigations and the latter said the 38-year-old was “highly likely” to have been aware of the incident.

The CSA can appeal against the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport and in a statement reacting to the sanctions, its chief executive Kevin Blue and Canadian Olympic Committee chief executive David Shoemaker both said an appeal was under consideration.

“We are exploring options to appeal on the basis that it is excessively punitive towards our Women’s National Team players – who were not involved in any unethical behaviour,” Blue said.

“Canada Soccer took swift action to suspend the implicated staff members and is also proceeding with a broad independent review that may lead to further disciplinary action.”

Shoemaker added: “We feel terrible for the athletes on the Canadian Women’s Olympic Soccer Team who as far as we understand played no role in this matter.”

In a statement on Wednesday, Priestman accepted responsibility for her colleagues’ actions after a scouting report filed by Lombardi was sent to Mander.

On Thursday, a French court handed Lombardi an eight-month suspended jail sentence after he pleaded guilty to flying a drone in an urban area without a license.

The following day, Shoemaker remarked that there “appears to be information that could tarnish” Canada’s women’s football triumph at the Tokyo Games.

This followed Canadian media reports that drones had been used in previous tournaments.

Assistant coach Andy Spence will now lead the team for the remainder of the Games. The defending Olympic champions’ next match is against France on Sunday.

Canada had earned three points from their opening game against New Zealand, but FIFA’s sanction now leaves them at minus three in Group A, with upcoming matches against the host nation and Colombia.

  • NHIS originally initiated, piloted by Kufuor not NDC – GMA President asserts

President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA),Dr. Frank Serebour, has dismissed claims made by the association’s former General Secretary, Professor Titus K. Beyuo, about the origins and implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

In a detailed interview with Pure FM’s Evans Osei-Bonsu, Dr. Serebour clarified that, contrary to Prof. Beyuo’s assertion that the scheme was initially implemented by the NDC, it was actually the administration of former President John Kufuor that introduced the policy.

He highlighted the significant role the GMA played in formulating and executing the policy, noting that the NPP administration, under President Kufuor, actively sought the association’s input and expertise.

“We, as a group, do not involve ourselves in the politics of the policy. This is why we continue to express our concerns about the challenges the Scheme faces, despite seeing significant successes in addressing most of our concerns.

We played a crucial role in the formulation, piloting, and execution of the policy, and for that reason, I can affirm that it was H.E John Agyekum Kufuor’s government that originally initiated and piloted the concept of health insurance in Ghana, contrary to Professor Beyuo’s claim.”

    Background

Professor Titus K. Beyuo, former Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association and current NDC parliamentary candidate for Lambussie, challenged the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) claims about the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) during Adom TV’s Badwam Sectorial Debate at the Accra Digital Center on Friday.

He asserted that the NPP’s statement that the NHIS was established under President John Agyekum Kufuor in 2003 is false. According to Professor Beyuo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was the original architect and implementer of the health insurance concept in Ghana.

“The NDC initiated health insurance with a National Health Insurance concept but faced strong opposition from the NPP, with Dr. Addo-Kufuor being particularly vocal.

The concept of NHIS was first introduced under former President Jerry John Rawlings, who planned and piloted it.

“However, when the NPP came to power, they passed the NHIS Act, Act 650.

This act established district mutual health schemes, private mutual health insurance schemes, and commercial ones, but there was no provision for a national scheme, despite the act being called a national insurance act.

The NDC later repealed that act and established a truly national scheme,” Prof Beyuo explained.

Photo: J.J Rawlings napping during June 4 Revolution emerges online

Whenever the June 4, 1979, revolution is discussed, one prominent name that stands out in connection with this pivotal moment in Ghana’s democratic history is Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings.

Rawlings is widely recognized as the driving force behind this significant event, which was ignited by widespread dissatisfaction with government corruption and economic mismanagement under the Supreme Military Council (SMC).

On June 4, 1979, Jerry Rawlings, who had been imprisoned for an attempted coup in May of the same year, was freed by a group of junior military officers and soldiers.

Following his release, Rawlings took control of the country’s affairs, successfully overthrowing the Supreme Military Council with the support of the military.

However, this takeover brought its own set of challenges and measures for Rawlings and his team.

Immediately after seizing power, a curfew was imposed across the country, placing a significant burden on Rawlings and his officers, who had to remain vigilant, especially at night, to fend off numerous attempts to overthrow them.

A notable moment following the June 4th uprising was captured in a photograph of Jerry Rawlings taking an afternoon nap, slumped on what appeared to be a sofa.

This image was shared by an account on X (formerly Twitter); @GyapKay.

After the June 4th uprising, Jerry John Rawlings established the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) and began implementing a series of radical reforms aimed at eradicating corruption and improving the nation’s economic situation.

Among his actions were the executions of several former heads of state and senior military officers who were deemed corrupt.

In 1979, Rawlings handed over power to a civilian government led by President Dr. Hilla Limann. However, he later staged another coup on December 31, 1981, ousting President Limann.

Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings served as president until 2001, initially as a military leader and later as a democratically elected president.

  • “We have been running our country’s economy like a Ponzi scheme” – NPP’s Kwaku Kwarteng

“We have been running our country’s economy like a Ponzi scheme” – NPP’s Kwaku Kwarteng

Member of Parliament for Obuasi West and spokesperson for the Economy Committee, Kwaku Kwarteng, has attributed Ghana’s economic crisis to decades of poor political decisions and economic mismanagement by both past and present governments.

In an opinion piece, Mr. Kwarteng likened the management of Ghana’s economy to a Ponzi scheme..

“The economic problems Ghana is facing today, at both the national level and in households, are also the
cumulative effects of many decades, spanning different governments, of the bad politics and economic mismanagement that have characterised the governance of our country.

“Since independence, we have survived by constantly overspending our means and borrowing to finance the overspending. And many of these expenditures are just bad prioritisation.

“We always offer higher interest to lenders, borrow more, use a part to repay previous debts, and the rest to pay for the current year’s overspending. So, we have been running our country’s economy like a Ponzi scheme.

The economy is struggling today because lenders are now refusing to lend to us. It is just like a Ponzi scheme going into crisis once people stop depositing their monies with them.”

He urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to offer visionary leadership to address the country’s economic issues if they aim to break the eight-year cycle.

He emphasized that the NPP must recognize past and present failures of the political class and move away from the tendency to label all politicians as corrupt.

The Obuasi West MP called on the NPP to implement comprehensive and substantial reforms to tackle decades of poor governance and economic mismanagement.

Additionally, he suggested that the NPP must persuade voters of their dedication to resolving the country’s problems and show a determination to persist despite obstacles.

“To break the eight therefore, we must first break that norm by doing the following: Acknowledge the past and present failures of the political class to provide the kind of quality leadership required to avert the mess in which we find our country today.

“Adopt deep and far-reaching reforms to address the decades of bad politics and economic mismanagement. We must convince voters that we shall be ruthless in our determination to fix this country, that we shall stay the course no matter the challenges, and that, there shall be no sacred cows!”

He believes that if the NPP acknowledges the country’s challenges, takes responsibility for its mistakes, and implements meaningful change, breaking the eight-year cycle will happen naturally.

“Once we lead by example, we can say with integrity to our people that we are sinking in a common boat and call all Ghanaians to duty. As a political party, if we sincerely believe and can demonstrate our faithfulness to these commitments, breaking the eight will follow naturally.”

Kwaku Kwarteng argues that public concerns about spending by politicians be addressed

“We must address concerns about how much of our national resources we spend on ourselves as politicians, and take steps to overhaul the corrupt public procurement regime we inherited from previous governments and have continued to live with.”

104 protesters arrested during anti-corruption rallies

Police in Uganda arrested 104 individuals during this week’s anti-corruption protests, with nearly all facing public order charges, according to a police statement released late on Friday.

The government’s reaction to the street protests has been criticized by rights advocates and the United States, which expressed “concern” over the arrests of numerous protesters who were “peacefully demonstrating.”

In a statement on its X account on Friday, the US embassy in Uganda urged President Yoweri Museveni’s government to investigate allegations of assault on the detained protesters.

The protests, which took place on Tuesday and Thursday, saw young Ugandans taking to the streets to denounce alleged corruption by elected officials.

These demonstrations were inspired by recent youth-led protests in neighboring Kenya, which led the president there to abandon proposed tax hikes.

In response, Museveni’s government deployed police and soldiers throughout Kampala, arresting dozens of protesters carrying banners and chanting slogans.

According to a police statement, 100 of the arrested protesters have been charged. This was the first official disclosure of the number of detainees.

Rights group Amnesty International criticised the government’s “heavy-handed tactics” against the protesters earlier this week.

Ugandan authorities must immediately and unconditionally release all those who were arrested solely for exercising their right to peaceful assembly,” it said in a statement on Thursday.

2024 Elections: Know your worth, don’t allow yourself to be bought – Zanetor to NDC agents

Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has warned all National Democratic Congress (NDC) agents against accepting bribes to abandon their election monitoring duties, which could facilitate fraudulent activities.

She stressed the importance of the NDC securing a victory to safeguard Ghana’s democracy, emphasizing the necessity of protecting the ballot.

Agyeman-Rawlings criticized the Akufo-Addo administration as a failure and accused the government of “blatant corruption.”

“Corruption has been rampant under this government,” she stated during the NDC’s 2024 campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday, July 27.

“Today we promise John Mahama that we will set the bar high with zero tolerance with respect to corruption. The people of Ghana hold NDC to the highest standards

“We must hold onto principles that can’t be bought with money, we must make sure none of our agents is be bought,” she said.

“Let’s protect the ballot boxes., do not allow yourself to be misled by the money people will bring your way,” she said.

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), asserted that the 2024 general election will bring about a change in government.

He believes that Ghanaians will vote out the New Patriotic Party (NPP) due to the “incompetent Akufo-Addo administration.”

“Change is coming, are you ready for change,” he said during the campaign launch of the NDC in Tamale on Saturday, July 27.

“The victory of the NDC is coming again,” he stressed.

The campaign Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Professor Joshua Alabi also expressed optimism that Ghanaians will vote for the NDC in this year’s elections.
He says that the people are wide awake and will not be decided by the governing NPP.

“The people are very awake and they have seen the truth,” he told TV3’s Komla Klutse in Tamale during the NDC’s 2024 campaign launch at the Jubilee Park.

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, a member of the NDC’s manifesto committee, stated that the party aims to secure 14 out of the 18 seats in the Northern Region.

He elaborated that while the Volta Region remains the NDC’s stronghold, the Northern Region is the driving force behind the party’s momentum.

Speaking in an interview with TV3’s Mawuena Egbeta in Tamale on the sidelines of the campaign launch, the former Minister of Youth and Sports said: “The idea is that we are going to win 14 seats out of the 18 seats in 2024.”

He further criticized the Akufo-Addo for economic mismanagement.

The mismanagement of the economy, he said, will cause Ghanains to vote for the NDC.

“People have seen the abysmal performance every single sector of the economy is in a mess so the people have through,” he said.

Don’t succumb to Akufo-Addo’s pressure, honour your oath – Asiedu Nketia tells Security Chiefs

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has urged the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defense Staff to uphold their integrity and remain impartial amid potential pressure from President Akufo-Addo.

During the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, 2024, Asiedu Nketia encouraged the IGP to stay resolute and act justly in the run-up to the 2024 general elections, despite any external pressures.

He underscored the critical importance of the security forces maintaining independence and neutrality, especially as the 2024 general elections approach.

“My message to the IGP and the Chief of Defense Staff is simple, the day you were commissioned into leadership of our security services, you swore an oath to protect the interest of Ghanaians. You didn’t swear to protect the interest of any regime that is in power for the time being.

We know you’re working under undue pressure, but, please you can absorb that pressure and do the right thing for the next four months.

“If you fail, on the day of accountability, you will not have the president who is pressuring you now to come to your defence, you will be left on your own and your God.

“This is the time for positive defiance. You cannot be following wrong instructions under the excuse of order from above, no order from above. You swore an oath to protect this country.”

Kudus and his West Ham United teammates are in the US for their 2024/2025 pre-season tour.

The fan made his way to EverBank Stadium, where West Ham has been training and playing pre-season matches, and managed to get Kudus’s attention.

Holding his baby in his arms, the man handed the child to Kudus, asking him to ‘bless’ the baby and impart some of the footballing talent that has made Kudus one of the sport’s biggest stars.

Kudus warmly accepted the baby, spoke a few words to him, and then returned the child to his father.

The heartwarming video has been circulating on social media, drawing comparisons to Lionel Messi’s ‘blessing’ of Barcelona and Spain forward Lamine Yamal when he was a baby.

Social media users believe Kudus’s blessing will work magic, predicting that the baby will grow up to become a Ghanaian football star.

Mohammed Kudus, who had an impressive debut season in the Premier League, is confident of elevating his game further.

With the more attacking-minded coach Julen Lopetegui, Kudus believes his offensive skills will be fully utilized, leading to a successful 2024/2025 season.

REMARKS BY THE MINORITY LEADER, HON. CASSIEL ATO FORSON, (PhD) @ THE NDC CAMPAIGN LAUNCH IN TAMALE ON SATURDAY, 27TH JULY, 2024

    Greetings in Dagbani

    Comrades,

our country is in a mess
    a gargantuan mess
    a big fat mess!
In fact, Ghana is in trouble!

This Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government has been a monumental failure

It has been almost eight (8) years of:

    Lies, lies and more lies

    Impunity and lawlessness

    Recklessness and cluelessness

    No Job and Joblessness

    No hope and Hopelessness

    Hardships, misery and Ahokyer3

    Tax, Taxes and more Taxes

    Borrowing, more borrowing and over-borrowing

Illegal printing of money and more illegal printing of money at the Bank of Ghana

    Wastage

    Non-performance
It has been almost eight (8) years of:

    Poor governance

    Massive uncontrolled corruption

    State capture

    Family and friends

    Arrogance of power

I HAVE HEARD SOME GHANAIANS SAY,THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN POLITICS AND THAT THEY ARE NOT GOING TO VOTE

I bet, you will have a change of mind if you are aware that:

11.5 million Ghanaians, representing 33.3% of ourpeople, have been thrown into extreme poverty due to the bad policies of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia

I bet, you will have a change of mind if you are aware that:

8.4 million Ghanaians representing 24.5% of our people went a day without food in 2023, according to Ghana Statistical Service

2 million Ghanaians are facing acute food and nutrition insecurity, according to the World Bank

35% of our employable youth are unemployed (the highest in the Fourth Republic)

1.9 million of our youth are idle with no work, no training and no education, according to the Ghana Statistical Service

Out of Ghana’s population of 33 million, about 22million are jobless

This means 2 out of every 3 Ghanaians are jobless

Another 4.5 million of our people have completelygiven up on their search for jobs out of frustration

50% of our doctors are now working abroad due to poor working conditions, says the Ghana Human Development report
I bet, you will have a change of mind if you are aware that:

This government borrowed and overborrowed and have made Ghana bankrupt

Ghana is so broke that the country cannot repay its debt.

Even pensioners were made to suffer crude and painful haircuts

The Bank of Ghana is now bankrupt and policy insolvent

    Ghana’s cocoa sector has collapsed

And almost all state-owned enterprises are recording huge losses and collapsing

With this poor scorecard of this Akufo-Addo/ Bawumia government, my fellow countrymen and women:

This is a call to duty!

    Don’t sit on the fence!

We owe Ghana a joint effort and communal labour to rescue and reset our dear country

“WALAAHI, WE NEED TO RESCUE OURCOUNTRY”!

“TOUCH WOOD, WE WILL RESET GHANA”!

Our forward march to victory requires not only hard work but also unity, togetherness, purposefulness, concerted effort and extreme vigilance, among others

Come out in your numbers and vote John Mahama and NDC Parliamentary candidates on 7thDecember, 2024

    I thank you all.

Corruption, the biggest evil fighting Ghana’s democracy – Zanetor Rawlings

MP for Korle Klottey, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has identified corruption as the greatest threat to Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking at the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale, Northern Region, on Saturday, July 27, 2024, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings highlighted the urgent need for collective efforts to fight corruption, which she believes hampers the nation’s growth and prosperity.

She emphasized that corruption impacts every facet of Ghanaian life, including education and healthcare, and called on citizens to hold leaders accountable and unite against corruption.

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings underscored that ensuring a brighter future for Ghana is a shared responsibility.

During the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, Mr. Mahama highlighted his dedication to honesty and integrity in his quest for the presidency.

“I’ve been out of government for eight years now. I did my best, I wouldn’t say things were perfect but at least we were making progress. What I can promise you is that I will be truthful to you, I will never tell you lies, I will never tell you things I cannot do,” Mr Mahama said.

The Black Stars and West Ham United standout is reportedly on the Reds’ transfer radar as they seek a long-term successor for their talisman, Mohamed Salah.

Other wingers rumored to be in contention for Salah’s replacement at Liverpool include Anthony Gordon and Leroy Sane.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Salah’s future, he remains an integral part of the Liverpool squad and is currently participating in pre-season preparations for the 2024/25 football season.

Reports indicate that even if Salah remains at Liverpool this summer, the club plans to recruit several young talents to bolster the team.

Meanwhile, other top clubs are also eyeing Mohammed Kudus this summer following his impressive season with West Ham.

Franklin Cudjoe joins calls for scrapping of COVID-19 levy; says its killing Ghanaians

Founder and President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has criticized the government for maintaining the COVID-19 levy despite widespread appeals from the business community for its removal.

The government maintains that the levy is essential for managing the ongoing financial repercussions of the pandemic.

Prior to the mid-year budget review, the business community urged the removal of various redundant taxes, including the COVID-19 levy. Nevertheless, the government has justified its decision to keep the levy in place.

Abena Osei-Asare, Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, explained to the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Wednesday that although the immediate threat of COVID-19 has lessened, the financial impacts continue.

In an interview with Selom Adonoo on Big Issue on Channel One TV, Mr. Cudjoe emphasized the burden that taxes impose on Ghanaians and called on the Akufo-Addo administration to promptly abolish the COVID-19 levy.

He also criticized the lack of infrastructure development despite the government collecting numerous taxes.

“Look at the haemorrhage we have been experiencing in terms of the way taxes received are wasted. So, there’s a certain anomaly to think that it’s only the government that can deliver development to persons and individuals. I’m not too sure that we should be conceptualising the essence of government…

In the face of the wanton distraction that has happened to COVID-19 money, you recall that there was a special audit done for all COVID-19 received funds.

“I disagree fundamentally with the purposes of taxation, yes, some amount of taxation should go to the government for driving infrastructural-related purposes. Even then, we should have the private sector being part of it…

I have a challenge with the COVID-19 tax and I think it is important that even though we are under economic challenges, largely imposed by our own doing. This whole conversation about COVID-19 tax is quite unnerving.”

Mid Year Budget: There’s nothing ‘growth’ about Ghana’s economy – Economist

Economist and University of Ghana lecturer Prof. Patrick Asuming has challenged the government’s assertions of a robust economic recovery, arguing that the actual situation contradicts these claims.

Prof. Asuming contended that the economy is not improving but instead stagnating, contrary to the government’s positive reports.

This critique follows Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam’s statement during the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review on July 23, where he claimed that the economy is rebounding more strongly than expected.

In an interview with Selorm Adonoo on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Prof. Asuming noted that the Minister’s remarks do not align with the ongoing struggles faced by Ghanaians.

He highlighted issues such as the fluctuating exchange rate, frequent power outages known as ‘Dumsor,’ and high unemployment as evidence that challenges persist and the true economic conditions are being misrepresented.

“From my point of view, recovering and strongly are not descriptions I will give to the economy as you know today.

I think the Finance Minister is right to say the growth rate of last year [2023], is higher than the revised targets from the Mid-Year Budget. But we have to understand that even the higher-than-expected growth rate was still lower than the 2022 growth rate.

He emphasised, “And we all see 2022 as a really bad year for the Ghanaian economy and yet, the growth rate of last year [2023] that we say is higher than expected is still lower. Yes, of course, we set a lower target and we beat it, it doesn’t in any way tell us that the economy is on a strong footing.

“We don’t measure the progress of the economy by the GDP growth without paying attention to where the growth rate is coming from. And the extent to which Ghanaians are benefitting.

I think if you go on the streets and ask many Ghanaians, what they will tell you is completely at variance with what the finance minister said that the economy is recovering strongly… The statement that the economy is recovering strongly is a lot of overstatement.

“Simply quoting that the exchange rate is lower than it used to be doesn’t really tell the full picture.

The stabilisation we saw is kind of stalling.”

Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference’s  national forum slated for July 30-31

Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Catholic Relief Services, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), and the Ministry of National Security have launched the Sahel Peace Initiative (SPI) National Forum to foster social cohesion, security, and peaceful elections in Ghana.

The SPI National Forum, themed ‘Building a more peaceful and cohesive Ghana.

A collective endeavour’, addresses various challenges, including security threats, humanitarian crises, and socio-political tensions in the Sahel regions, which pose risks to Ghana.

The forum aims to prevent the spread of insecurity from the Sahel into Ghana.

In response, the Episcopal Conferences of five West African nations—Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, and Niger—collaborated in November 2019 to initiate the Sahel Peace Initiative (SPI), focusing on promoting enduring peace and social cohesion across the region.

These organizations noted that the violence in the Sahel has caused substantial displacement of people across borders, with many seeking refuge in neighboring countries.

“Since November 2022, Ghana particularly its Upper East and Upper West Regions bordering Burkina Faso has experienced an influx of Burkinabé asylum-seekers.

“This influx has added to Ghana’s enduring challenges to peaceful coexistence, including chieftaincy disputes, high youth unemployment and potential political tensions as national elections approach.

These internal strains, if not addressed, will create vulnerabilities that could be exploited by violent extremist groups.”

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference expressed concerns about the tensions in Ghana.

“Beyond the immediate security and humanitarian concerns lie deep-seated challenges that contribute to tensions in Ghana. Economic marginalisation, poor governance and social inequality hinder progress and fuel communal resentment.”

The SPI National Forum offers a distinctive opportunity for collaboration, facilitated through a partnership with the Catholic Relief Services, the Ministry of National Security, and the Ghana Journalists Association.

Olympic organizers sorry for introducing South Korea as North Korea at opening ceremony

Olympic organizers have issued an “apology” after South Korea’s athletes were mistakenly introduced as North Korea during the opening ceremony in Paris.

While the South Korean team paraded down the River Seine, both French and English announcers referred to them as the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” which is North Korea’s official title.

The same designation was correctly used later when North Korea’s delegation appeared.

The two Koreas have been separated since the end of World War II, and recent tensions between them have been high.

Although the television broadcast displayed the correct title in subtitles, the South Korean sports ministry has announced plans to file a “strong complaint” with the French government regarding the error.

In a statement, the ministry expressed “regret over the announcement… where the South Korean delegation was introduced as the North Korean team.”

The statement added that the second vice sports minister, Jang Mi-ran, a 2008 Olympic weightlifting champion, had demanded a meeting with Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued an apology on its official Korean-language X account, saying: “We would like to offer a deep apology over the mistake that occurred in the introduction of the South Korean delegation during the opening ceremony.”

South Korea, formally known as the Republic of Korea, has 143 athletes in its Olympic team this year, competing across 21 sports.

North Korea has sent 16 athletes. This is the first time it has competed in the games since Rio 2016.

  • Mass exodus of SDA college of Education students as CETAG strike prolong

Mass exodus of SDA college of Education students as CETAG strike prolong

Approximately 80% of students at the SDA College of Education in Koforidua Asokore have left campus due to the protracted strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).

The industrial action, which began on June 14, is in response to the government’s refusal to implement CETAG’s arbitral award and conditions of service.

The situation deteriorated further when the government decided to freeze the July salaries of CETAG members, prompting a complete withdrawal of their services.

As a result, the SDA College of Education has seen a mass exodus of students.

A visit to the campus revealed that only a few students, mostly first-year students, remain. Lecture halls were deserted, with some being utilized by Senior High School students for their studies. Male students were seen playing volleyball, expressing their indifference to the lecturers’ absence.

Sakyi Sampson Junior, the SRC President of SDA College of Education, stated that 80% of the students have left, while others are stranded on campus.

“This strike has lasted for over a month. When it first began, we thought it would last only a week, but unfortunately, it has extended to over six weeks,” he said.

He added, “Even today, as we have a council meeting by CETAG, we don’t know what the outcome will be. My students are stranded. I can say that about 80% of students are home now, which is a problem for us.

All activities have ceased—SRC, college activities, and so many things are not going on. We urge the government to come to the negotiation table with CETAG and sort everything out so we can return to campus.”

Kyere Phinihas, former SRC Organizing Secretary, noted that many fourth-year students have been unable to complete their dissertations due to the lack of supervision from striking lecturers.

“We haven’t had any interactions with our lecturers, and we don’t have any course outlines or manuals to depend on for learning.

Additionally, level 400 students are working on their project work, and these lecturers are the same ones we need to engage with for guidance. Our project work has been halted.

Some students are even at chapter one, and some have not yet discussed their project work with their supervisors. This strike is really affecting students, especially us level 400 students who are off-campus.”

Meanwhile, female students have expressed frustration over the disruption caused by the strike and are urging the government to quickly address the situation.

Despite the strike and the students’ inability to finish their project work, the college has scheduled its graduation ceremony for August 1, 2024. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is set to attend as the Guest of Honor.

Road tolls or no road tolls remove the “bad E-levy” tax – UGBS Professor

Professor at the University of Ghana Business School, Patrick Asuming, has argued for the removal of the e-levy, regardless of whether road tolls are reinstated or not. He criticized the e-levy as a poorly conceived tax.

Prof. Asuming also expressed skepticism about the government’s plan to reintroduce road tolls.

He pointed out that the government has previously made similar promises to reinstate other abolished levies, which ultimately did not come to pass, leading him to doubt the current proposal.

“The e-levy is a bad tax that should be removed with or without the road tolls. I am very suspicious that these road tolls will be back.

In 2023 they stated that they were going to bring back some tolls that were removed but we didn’t hear anything about it. Now you are saying this.

“I am not sure there is a real intention to bring back the road tolls. It was a bad idea to remove the road tolls,” he said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday, July 27.

The government is preparing to reinstate road tolls, which were discontinued in 2021. Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam announced that the Cabinet has approved a framework for reintroducing the tolls by 2025.

He made this announcement during the mid-year budget review presented to Parliament on July 23.

In June, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, advocated for the return of road tolls to enhance road infrastructure in Ghana.

He noted that the government currently lacks sufficient funds for infrastructure projects and proposed that road tolling could be an effective solution to address this funding gap.

“Let us go back to a system of broad-based road tolls. The tolling system has to come back, and I think it will come back.
“It is a fundamental mistake of the government to place all road projects on the budget. The government doesn’t have enough money and the private sector has to be brought in,” he noted.

Government canceled road toll collections in 2021 after introducing the e-levy which government said was to substitute the road tolls.
However, the e-levy has failed to live up to its promise prompting government to bring back the tolls in 2025.

  • ‘Transforming’ Free SHS in the North isn’t something you can trust Mahama with – Bawumia

‘Transforming’ Free SHS in the North isn’t something you can trust Mahama with – Bawumia

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stated that the transformative benefits of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme in the Northern region and throughout Ghana would not have been realized if former President John Mahama had stayed in power.

During a large rally in Jirapa, part of his campaign tour in the Upper West Region, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the substantial advantages the Free SHS initiative has provided to many households in the North since its launch in 2017.

He criticized former President Mahama for opposing the policy, despite its positive impact on the region and the country as a whole.

“Former President Mahama said that if he had the money, he wouldn’t use it for free SHS education. He said it was not a priority. But we have brought it, and the people of the North and Ghanaians are benefiting,” Dr Bawumia declared to loud cheers from the crowd.

Highlighting the increase in enrollment, he continued, “We knew, and I knew, that where we had the poorest people in the North, we needed Free SHS education. We brought Free SHS to the North and Ghana, and our children are attending in their numbers.

The total enrollment for senior high school has increased from 800,000 to 1.4 million in seven years. It tells you that our people were yearning for Free SHS education.”

Dr. Bawumia noted that the five northern regions now boast the highest enrollment rates in senior high school education. “But this is what John Mahama said we should not do. He said if he had the money, he would not do it,” he reiterated.

The Vice President also criticized former President Mahama for allegedly misusing funds in the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) project.

“He set up SADA, and we all saw what happened. He claimed he invested millions of dollars, but we all know what happened. There is no single SADA project to show, and I have challenged him to show us one, and he has not.”

Dr Bawumia contrasted his record with Mahama’s, highlighting the policies and development projects he has facilitated as Vice President, benefiting both the North and Ghana.

AU endorses President Akufo-Addo’s MoMo interoperability plan for Africa

African Union (AU) has approved President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s proposal for mobile money interoperability throughout Africa, a major step towards economic unification.

This effort aims to facilitate smooth transactions and promote economic integration throughout the continent.

In Accra, Ghana, President Akufo-Addo delivered two reports during the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting. “Establishment of the African Union Financial Institutions (AUFIs)” and “Scaling up Interoperability for Economic Integration: Using Mobile Money to Buy and Sell Across Africa.”

The African Union (AU) has endorsed the findings, paving the way for mobile money interoperability across the continent.

The program’s implementation is expected to enhance the quality of life for Africans, promote economic integration, and increase intra-African trade.

This decision could unlock numerous economic opportunities for Africa, which currently accounts for over 70% of global mobile money transactions.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of mobile money interoperability, noting that it will enable Africans to use their wallets to buy and sell goods and services between member states, fostering economic opportunities and aiding in the fight against youth unemployment.

The African Union has called on member states, regional economic communities, and relevant stakeholders to commit to achieving mobile money interoperability by 2027.

As part of this initiative, all member states will be required to join the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), allow cross-border mobile money interoperability, and establish a regulatory framework to govern mobile money operations across the continent.

With the adoption of mobile money interoperability, the African Union’s goal of creating a single, unified market for Africa is significantly closer to becoming a reality.

This initiative is anticipated to boost the continent’s overall economic integration, stimulate economic growth, and reduce transaction costs.

Video: See how Team Ghana turned up at the opening ceremony of 2024 Olympic Games

2024 Olympic Games, being held in Paris, France, officially kicked off on Friday, July 26, 2024, following a breathtaking opening ceremony held at the River Seine.

As has become customary, the opening ceremony of the world’s biggest sporting festival affords participating countries the chance to showcase themselves to the world.

Ghana, as one of the 184 countries with athletes participating in the Paris Games, was duly represented with the country’s sportsmen and sportswomen wearing the traditional dress of fugu.

According to the media attaché to the team, Ghana had five athletes present at the ceremony, rocking the fugu wear, a black gown, and special footwear.

Overall, Ghana is being represented by eight athletes who will be competing in the 4×100 men’s relay team, men’s 100 and 200 meters, high jump, and swimming events.

Despite it being a tall order, there are considerable expectations that the 4×100 men’s relay team could achieve something monumental if they are able to sort out their perennial baton change problem.

A feature of the opening ceremony that, according to social reactions, was outstanding was the performance by legendary American singer, Celine Dion, who braved through her health struggles to deliver a beautiful performance.

In the previous 15 appearances, Ghana has won just 5 medals (4 bronze, 1 silver).

Critics lack understanding of proposed credit scoring system – Bawumia

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has responded to critiques regarding his plan to introduce a credit scoring system in Ghana.

He explained that the proposed system is intended to allow individuals to purchase goods on credit, thereby improving financial accessibility for many Ghanaians.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the country’s recent advancements, including the issuance of the Ghana Card, the integration of various databases, and the expansion of financial inclusion through mobile money interoperability.

He argued that these developments have created a conducive environment for the successful implementation of a credit scoring system.

“Among many benefits, the operation of a credit scoring system will make it easier for the ordinary Ghanaian to purchase essentials such as cars, and mobile phones, and obtain loans at lower interest rates,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He further noted that in most advanced nations, mobile phones are often available for free from telecom companies with a two or three-year contract, contingent on one’s credit score.

Dr. Bawumia criticized his critics, stating, “Unfortunately, my opponents always think in terms of impossibilities and criticize without knowledge.”

Earlier this year, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia introduced the proposal for a personalized credit scoring system in Ghana during his initial policy address.

Since then, he has elaborated on its potential benefits during his campaign tours, suggesting methods like purchasing mobile phones on credit from telecom companies and paying in installments through the credit scoring system.

However, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed skepticism about the proposal’s feasibility and impact. They have questioned its practicality and downplayed its potential benefits.

GHS warns Ghanaians over increasing taste for fast foods

Ghana Health Service (GHS) has identified fast food consumption as a key factor behind the rising rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country.

According to the GHS, the shift in lifestyles, particularly among younger generations, has led to an increased incorporation of fast food into diets.

At the 47th Annual General & Scientific Meeting of the Ghana Chapter of the West African College of Physicians, Dr. Afua Commey, Deputy Programme Manager for the Non-Communicable Diseases Control Programme at GHS, highlighted the urgency of tackling this problem.

She pointed out that Ghana is witnessing a surge in all NCD risk factors, partly due to the growing preference for fast food.

“In terms of NCD risk factors, we seem to be determined to gallop ahead of our neighboring countries. We are witnessing an escalation of all NCD factors… The risk factors are everywhere.

As Ghanaians, we are increasingly embracing fast foods, possibly due to the lifestyle changes we’re adopting.

“As we adopt these lifestyles, we are also linking some form of reward system for our children, such as promising to take them to fast food places if they do well in school.

Unfortunately, these habits are reflected in our numbers, with the proportion of people diagnosed with hypertension being about 50% of the estimated number,” she explained.

Vice President of the Ghana Chapter of the West African College of Physicians, Dr. Sammy Ohene also highlighted the importance of prioritizing mental health, noting that it is a leading concern among non-communicable diseases.

GHS announces launch of hepatitis B dose at birth

In recognition of World Hepatitis Day on July 28, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has launched a call to action under the theme “It’s Time for Action.”

The GHS has urged pregnant women to attend antenatal clinics and opt for hospital deliveries to combat hepatitis B and C, which remain a significant health challenge in Ghana.

Dr. Kwame Amponsah-Achiano, Programme Manager for the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), noted the high prevalence of hepatitis B in the country, with about 2.8 million people affected as of 2022.

Despite this, public awareness of the disease is still low, making increased education and preventive efforts essential.

Dr. Amponsah-Achiano highlighted that the introduction of hepatitis B vaccines for children under one year has led to a decrease in new infections.

To further combat the disease, the Ministry of Health, GHS, and their partners are working to introduce a birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine, which is especially important given the high prevalence among pregnant women.

He urged expectant mothers to deliver in hospitals to ensure their newborns receive this critical vaccine dose, which could significantly lower new infection rates and save lives.

Dr. Amponsah-Achiano also emphasized the importance of testing for hepatitis B to know one’s status, advocating for vaccination as a key preventive measure.

He encouraged those who test positive to seek medical treatment and expressed optimism that collective efforts could eventually eradicate hepatitis B.

Joint Committee face backlash over Electrochem salt mining lease report

A joint committee of Parliament is facing criticism over its report concerning the salt mining lease awarded to Electrochem in Ada.

The Energy and Lands Committee has advised against any revision of the lease given to the company.

This recommendation comes despite reports of police and military violence against local residents, including the death of a miner and numerous injuries.

Residents of Ada have raised concerns about the lease, which they say has displaced many of them from their traditional small-scale salt mining activities.

Christian Corletey Otuteye, the MP for the area, has voiced strong objections to the committee’s findings.

He criticized the report for granting Electrochem a monopoly on salt mining in the region, which he argues has driven local miners out of business.

Player contracts in Ghana are ‘abnormal’ – Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara fumes

Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara has condemned the ‘abnormal’ nature of player contracts in the Ghana Premier League, particularly those that expire just before a new season begins.

During a media briefing on Thursday, July 25, Ouattara expressed frustration over the non-professional nature of these contracts, highlighting how they often lead to players leaving clubs at critical times.

“It’s only in Ghana that I see a player’s contract end in September or December,” Ouattara remarked.

“It’s not normal for a contract to end just a week before the league starts. It’s not professional.”

Ouattara’s remarks stem from recent problems where players have left Ghanaian clubs due to poorly timed contract expirations, creating difficulties for teams during critical points in the season.

The Hearts of Oak coach is determined to strengthen his squad following a tough 2023/24 season, where the team narrowly escaped relegation with a vital comeback win against Bechem United on the final day.

Ouattara’s goal is to avoid a repeat of last season’s struggles, and his critique of current contract practices highlights his dedication to fostering professionalism and stability within the club.

Harry Maguire admits rumours of Ten Hag’s exit affected team’s performance

Harry Maguire has confessed that rumors about Erik ten Hag’s job security impacted Manchester United’s performances last season.

United ended up eighth in the Premier League but salvaged their disappointing season with a victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Securing a second trophy in two years ensured Ten Hag retained his position, but Maguire noted that the ongoing speculation about the Dutchman’s potential dismissal affected the players throughout the season.

“It was tough,” Maguire said in an interview in Los Angeles at the start of United’s U.S. tour.

“It probably did damage our performances and results throughout the season maybe a little bit. Especially when it happened around that Christmas period when we really did fall off. But credit to the manager, the way that he handled it.”

A report leading up to the cup final indicated that Erik ten Hag would be dismissed regardless of the outcome against City.

Despite defying expectations and winning 2-1, Harry Maguire mentioned that the atmosphere at the post-match celebration in London was muted due to ongoing speculation about the manager’s future.

“It was so strange,” Maguire said. “No one really knew what was going on. No one had assurance.

“If you asked the players, they’ll probably just say they didn’t really know because no one really had a clue. It was really impressive with the way that he handled that week with a victory against probably the best team in Europe at the moment.”

Sources have told ESPN that United spoke to a number of other managerial candidates including Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi before deciding to stick with Ten Hag.

The club have since extended his contract by a year and Maguire believes it’s the right decision.

“He has shown we can beat the top teams and we have won two trophies in two years,” the defender said.

“The first season was really good, last season wasn’t. Last season was tough for Erik as well. There was so much uncertainty and the amount of injuries was freakish really and I am pretty confident that won’t happen this season. “We have faith in the management team and the additions he has made are really good as well.”

Maguire is fit again after missing the cup final and the European Championship with a calf injury.

The 31-year-old described missing the Wembley showpiece and the Euros as the “toughest moment of his career.”

However, after completing extra training sessions with a United coach while on holiday in Portugal, he is now ready to return in a friendly against Arsenal at SoFi Stadium on Saturday.

Despite being linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, he insists he wants to stay.

“Until I get told you’re up for sale or we want you to leave I want to play for this club and make it successful again,” he said.

“All the things I’m hearing and seeing from everyone involved is I’ll be part of this club for the future.”
