Video: Chelsea’s Levi Colwill’s fight with James McClean during Rexham friendly

In the Chelsea vs Wrexham friendly, a clash between Levi Colwill and James McClean occurred just two minutes into the match following a rough challenge from McClean.

Colwill, 21, reacted angrily, grabbing McClean by the collar, which led to the game being halted briefly.

This altercation quickly became the focal point of the match. Chelsea narrowly avoided an embarrassing defeat with an 82nd-minute equalizer from Lesley Ugochukwu.

McClean’s challenge on Colwill was deemed late, sparking a physical confrontation between the two players. They had to be separated by teammates and coaches from both sides.

Despite the scuffle, neither player received a punishment from the referee, likely due to the incident occurring early in the game.

Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures include matches against Celtic, Club America, Manchester City, and Real Madrid over the next 11 days.

Canada Soccer admits men’s team’s attempt to use drones at Copa América

Canada Soccer chief Kevin Blue has stated that Canadian players have not engaged in any unethical conduct following a drone spying controversy that resulted in the dismissal of women’s national team coach Bev Priestman during the Paris Olympics.

The organization is hopeful that FIFA will refrain from imposing penalties on the national team players as investigations continue into allegations of systematic drone surveillance by staff from both the men’s and women’s teams.

“We admire deeply the will and determination of this group,” CEO & General Secretary Blue told reporters. “The players themselves have not been involved in any unethical behaviour and frankly we ask FIFA to take that into consideration.”

“Behaviour in the ethical grey area is completely unacceptable to Canadians… to me personally, it’s completely unacceptable as a leader.”

Reports from Canadian media indicate that both senior national teams in Canada have been using drones and engaging in surveillance for several years.

The men’s team achieved World Cup qualification for the first time in 36 years in 2022, and the women’s team won gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

Kevin Blue mentioned receiving “anecdotal feedback” about Canada’s drone use during their Copa America semi-final run last month, and noted that coach Jesse Marsch was informed of this practice.

“I am aware of an instance of attempted drone usage at the Copa America,” he said. “I have spoken with our current head coach about the incident after it occurred and I know he denounced it as a practice to his staff.

“Of course there’s going to be a significant, thorough review as we proceed with the investigation.”

The Canadian Olympic Committee said on Thursday that the women’s team will be led by assistant coach Andy Spence for the remainder of the Paris Games.

Arteta speaks on future of Eddie Nketiah, Smith Rowe, Nelson with club

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has spoken about the futures of Emile Smith Rowe (23), Eddie Nketiah (25) and Reiss Nelson (24) in his latest press conference.

After the Gunners’ 1-1 draw (won after penalties) with Bournemouth in a pre-season friendly at Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles, Arteta has been open about the possibility of losing three top talents this summer.

Speaking on Smith Rowe the Arsenal boss said: “Yeah, there are things happening in the background at the moment. We decided the best thing to do was to keep him away from the game today.”

The midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Fulham in recent days and could leave the North London club if not given the chance in the first team.

Speaking on Nketiah and Nelson he said: “A lot of players are being linked with potential moves. One way or the other. It’s normal.

“What I really like are the players that we have, the levels that they are showing. Especially the commitment, you can see it today just talking about those two the way they performed.”

Arteta is clearly impressed by the duo after this morning’s performance but it is clear that many young players are looking to move away from the club as more game time is available elsewhere.

  • Mexican drug cartel leader nabbed in Texas

Mexican drug cartel leader nabbed in Texas

One of the globe’s most formidable drug lords, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, has been detained by US federal agents in El Paso, Texas.

Zambada, 76, co-founded the notorious criminal organization with Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the US.

Alongside Zambada, US authorities also apprehended Guzman’s son, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, according to the Justice Department.

Earlier this year, in February, Zambada faced charges from US prosecutors for his involvement in a conspiracy to manufacture and distribute fentanyl, a potent opioid that has significantly contributed to the US opioid epidemic.

The specifics of the arrests are not yet fully known, but it appears that both men arrived in the US by plane.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Zambada was deceived into boarding the aircraft by a senior Sinaloa cartel member as part of a lengthy operation conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI.

The Journal reported that Zambada was under the impression he was traveling to inspect secret airstrips in Mexico.

The New York Times has reported that Zambada was “lured” onto the private plane under “false pretenses” by Guzman Lopez. Zambada believed the flight was heading south within Mexico, but it actually traveled north and landed in El Paso, as detailed by Fox News Correspondent Bryan Llenas.

Guzman Lopez surrendered to US authorities and turned on Zambada because he “blamed Mayo for the capture of his father”, Mr Llenas added.

In a written statement on Thursday evening, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said the two men lead “one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organisations in the world”.

“Fentanyl is the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced, and the Justice Department will not rest until every single cartel leader, member and associate responsible for poisoning our communities is held accountable,” he added.

American prosecutors say the Sinaloa cartel is the biggest supplier of drugs to the US.
US authorities have previously noted that fentanyl is the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 45.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had been offering a reward of up to $15m (£12m) for Zambada’s capture.

During Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s trial in 2019, his lawyers accused Zambada of bribing the “entire” Mexican government in exchange for living openly without fear of prosecution.
“In truth [Guzman] controlled nothing,” Guzman’s lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, told jurors. “Mayo Zambada did,” he claimed.

According to the US state department, Zambada is also the owner of several legitimate businesses in Mexico, including “a large milk company, a bus line and a hotel”, as well as real estate assets.

Alongside fentanyl charges, he is also facing charges in the US ranging from drug trafficking, murder, kidnapping, money laundering and organised crime.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had placed a reward of up to $15 million (£12 million) for information leading to Zambada’s capture. During Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s 2019 trial, Guzman’s defense team claimed that Zambada had bribed the entire Mexican government, allowing him to live freely without the threat of prosecution.

Napoli’s Lindstrom joins Everton on loan

Everton have secured a loan deal for Napoli midfielder Jesper Lindstrom, with an option to purchase the player permanently in 2025, both clubs announced on Friday.

Although the financial specifics of the transfer were not revealed, Italian reports suggest that Everton will pay Napoli approximately three million euros for the loan and have a buy option set at 22.5 million euros for the 24-year-old.

Lindstrom, a Denmark international, joined Napoli from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2023 and has since appeared in 29 matches for the Italian team.

“Last year was a tough year for me but I’m so happy to be here now and I can’t wait to get started,” Lindstrom told the club website.

“This is a season for me to come back on track. I think Everton is a very good fit for me and I’m ready to show why I should stay here.”

Everton have completed the signing of forward Iliman Ndiaye from Ligue 1 club Olympique de Marseille on a five-year deal. The team will begin their league season with a home match against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, August 17th.

  • Canadian Olympic chief thinks that Bev Priestman was probably aware of the drone usage scandal

Canadian Olympic chief thinks that Bev Priestman was probably aware of the drone usage scandal

CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee, David Shoemaker, has revealed that new information from Soccer Canada suggests suspended women’s head coach Bev Priestman was likely aware of the controversial use of drones at the Paris Olympics.

Priestman was removed from her position on Thursday by the COC following her suspension by Canada Soccer. The move came after New Zealand lodged complaints about Canadian drones flying over their training sessions before their opening Olympic match, which Canada won 2-1.

For the remainder of the Games, assistant coach Andy Spence will take over as head coach.

Shoemaker also stated that he is confident in Canada’s team continuing their campaign in Paris to defend their Olympic gold medal, despite discussions about potential disqualification due to the scandal.

He expressed discomfort at the possibility that the drone issue could affect the team’s gold medal from Tokyo 2020, especially in light of media reports about similar incidents involving the team in previous competitions.

“One of the key pieces of information was the conclusion from Canada Soccer that (Priestman) needed to be suspended based on their accumulation of facts,” Shoemaker said during Canada’s opening press conference on Friday.

“I’ve seen some of the information they have, and we gathered some additional information ourselves that made me conclude that she was highly likely to have been aware of the incidents here.”

The scandal has led to angry calls for the Canadian team to be sent home as well.

“I’m comfortable with the team competing as it is,” Shoemaker said. “We’ve made decisions as it relates to the ultimate sanction we have, participation on Team Canada here in Paris at the Olympic Games, that we get to nominate athletes and coaches to Team Canada and we get to remove them.

“If more facts and circumstances emerge, we can continue to contemplate further action as necessary. It’s important to me that Canadians’ questions are answered, and so we’re going to continue to do our best to answer those questions.”

Canadian sports network TSN reported that drone use predates the 2024 Olympics, with two sources with first-hand knowledge telling TSN the team have filmed other opponents’ closed-door training sessions, including during the 2020 Olympic tournament.

“There now appears to be information that could tarnish that Olympic performance in Tokyo, makes me sick to my stomach to think that there could be something that calls into question one of my favourite Olympic moments in history – that women’s team winning that gold medal against all odds, in those COVID restrictions.

“We encourage and I know Canada Soccer will investigate all of this fully, including Tokyo, (and) we’ll not only co-operate fully but more collaborate to make sure they get to the bottom of it.”

Canada beat Sweden in a penalty shootout to claim Olympic gold in Tokyo.

“There is no protest planned, and otherwise we are taking a pass on the opportunity to make any statement on the matter,” Swedish FA spokesperson Fredrik Madenstam said.

Canadian officials said the issue was an opportunity to reinforce their message of fair play.

“While I don’t like any tarnish that surely has resulted already, we must do what’s right,” Shoemaker said.

“We’ve been speaking for years now about the importance of winning well, and when we’ve been given a limited opportunity as it relates to the soccer team to send that message, that winning well is the only way, we’ve got to send that message.”

“Unbelievable” – Messi’s cryptic response following Argentina’s Olympics opener against Morocco

Lionel Messi shared a one-word message after Argentina’s Olympic opener against Morocco turned chaotic.

Argentina’s first game of the Paris Olympics ended in a 2-1 loss to Morocco following a tumultuous match in Saint-Etienne.

The Albiceleste equalized in the 16th minute of stoppage time, prompting fans to storm the pitch, leading to a suspension of play for over an hour.

VAR later disallowed the goal for offside, and Morocco maintained their 2-1 lead after the match resumed.

Messi posted on social media after the final whistle. The Argentina legend wrote simple “insolito” which translates to “unbelievable” coupled with a flushed emoji.

The Paris Olympic football tournament got off to a rough start, with incidents of fans throwing objects onto the pitch.

The situation was further marred by the booing of Argentina’s national anthem by the crowd, who appeared to be upset by footage of Enzo Fernandez and his teammates participating in a racist chant during their Copa America celebrations.

Argentina manager Javier Mascherano was also furious after the final whistle. “The biggest circus I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said.

Argentina will on to play Iraq on Saturday in Group B, while Morocco return to action on the same day against Ukraine.

This is how Mbappe would be used in Real Madrid – Ancelotti reveals plan

Real Madrid’s head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, has detailed his plan for integrating Kylian Mbappe into the squad for the upcoming season.

Ancelotti explained that Mbappe would primarily be deployed as a center forward or on the wings, based on what best suits him and the team.

He referenced Vinicius Junior, who, despite being a natural left winger, occasionally swapped positions with Rodrygo last season to fit the team’s strategy.

Ancelotti reassured that Mbappe’s position would not hinder Vinicius’ progress, addressing concerns about the potential overlap on the left wing.

In an interview with Nigerian footballer Mikel Obi, Ancelotti addressed these worries, stating, “I envision him [Mbappe] playing upfront. The attack is expansive.

The field spans 68 meters, and we need our forwards to cover this distance effectively. Vinicius can do this, as last season he predominantly played as a left winger. I believe that player mobility is key to offensive success.”

Ancelotti underscored the importance of adaptability and creativity among players, pointing out how Bellingham and Rodrygo have shown positional versatility.

He emphasized that players should be capable of shifting between different roles to maximize their impact in matches.

These remarks follow Mbappe’s signing of a five-year contract with Real Madrid, joining on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

I served Otumfuo, Dr. KK Sarpong, well hence my appointment as Kotoko CEO – Opoku Nti

The former Interim CEO of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Opoku Nti, has shared how his dedicated service to the club officials led to his appointment.

During Dr. Kofi K. Sarpong’s tenure as CEO, Nti served as his advisor and played a crucial role in the team’s success.

When Dr. Sarpong resigned, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II appointed Nti as the interim CEO until a permanent appointment could be made.

Nti explained, “You see, I took over from… even though I didn’t know it was going to happen, I took over from Dr. KK Sarpong. I was part of his management.

I was a special advisor to him, so when he resigned, Kotoko was about to get stuck because we needed to wait until a new appointment was made.

“So Otumfuo Osei Tutu II… I salute you, Nana. He called me and said I should steer the affairs until they put together the structures, which are the board and the management,” he said according to myjoyonline.com.

Nti held the position of interim CEO for three months, during which he had personal meetings with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II until a board was established.

He noted, “I did it for three months, I had meetings with him [Otumfuo] one-on-one and everything, until a board was constituted. The board was given to me [and] my job description up to now is a question mark.”

Malicious and crude lies! – Family of late Paralympic coach denies absconding allegations

The family of George Gyamfi Gyasi, the late coach of the so-called “fake Paralympic team,” has addressed recent accusations that they absconded after arriving in Norway to retrieve and identify his body.

Felix Kwame Gyasi, George’s brother, refuted the “unguarded and unverified statements,” expressing disappointment over the recent allegations.

Felix explained that George returned to Ghana from Turkey in February 2024 due to health issues with his left leg. Despite seeking medical treatment and planning to return to Europe, George delayed his trip after a family member passed away. He later sought help and traveled to Norway.

Upon arriving in Oslo, George faced a severe health crisis related to his previous condition and was admitted to the ICU, where he tragically passed away a few days later.

Felix noted that after failed attempts to secure visas for George’s wife and a close associate to arrange for the body to be brought back to Ghana, the family decided to cremate the remains and repatriate them.

He denied reports that the family sent a delegation to Norway to manage the situation, calling such claims malicious and baseless accusations against their deceased relative.

The family’s statement follows remarks from NPC-Ghana President Samson Deen, who claimed on Asaase Radio on Monday, July 22, that four relatives sent to retrieve George Gyasi’s body had absconded upon arriving in Norway.

“They subsequently wrote to the Norwegian embassy again and requested to send the families of the one who died. The people went, they couldn’t bring the corpse. The four also absconded, these guys are known. They’ve been identified,” Deen said.

Read the full statement from the family below:

Our attention has been drawn to unguarded, unverified, and unresearched statements made by certain media personalities in Accra and Kumasi regarding the late coach of the Amputees team, George Gyemfi Gyasi, who passed on the 17th of May, 2024, in Oslo, Norway.

It is very unfortunate that these personalities have not done due diligence and made no effort to cross-check their facts before airing them on various platforms. This smacks of impunity and disrespect to the Fourth Estate.

George Gyasi complained of pain in his left leg in February 2024 and returned to Ghana from Turkey to seek medical attention. After visiting three hospitals, George regained his strength and spoke to his elder sister, Nana Birago, about his intentions to go back to Europe and sought financial assistance from her.

Unfortunately, George had lost his uncle at the time, for which reason he was asked to stay until after the funeral so he could go back to Europe. However, he sought assistance from elsewhere and left for Norway.

Upon his arrival in Oslo, he felt the pangs of pain again in his left leg, subsequently collapsed, and was rushed to the hospital, where we were later informed that he had been admitted into the Intensive Care Unit. He was subsequently pronounced dead a few days later.

His wife and close associate, who had planned to go and see to the body to be transported, were denied visas by the Norwegian embassy in Accra.

The family consequently met and decided to have the body cremated and the remains sent to Ghana.

At no point did we, the Gyasis, send a delegation to Norway to arrange the body of the deceased.

At no point have we asked any person or group of persons to represent us in discussions with Norwegian authorities over his remains.

It is malicious, unfortunate, and crude to make allegations against the dead when they know they can’t speak for themselves.

We are currently in discussions with our lawyers to deal with these defamatory and scandalous statements by persons who have completely yanked due diligence out of the window and have not bothered to seek the right information regarding this matter.

Some things you cannot control – Partey on his injury issues since joining Arsenal

Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey has described his frequent injuries at Arsenal as one of life’s inexplicable occurrences.

Acknowledging that such situations are beyond his control, Partey emphasized that he is diligently working to improve his condition.

The Ghanaian player mentioned that he has adopted a resilient mindset, determined not to give up as he strives to manage his injury problems.

“I think that’s life. Things happen. Some things you cannot control. I have to keep going, keep fighting. Every time I fall, I have to come back, and that’s the mentality I have,” he said in a video shared by Arsenal reporter Connor Humm.

Thomas Partey’s tenure at Arsenal has been marred by a string of injuries, limiting his appearances more than anticipated.

In his first two seasons, Partey managed 24 Premier League games each, followed by 33 in his third. However, last season saw him participate in just 14 league matches.

Arsenal is reportedly considering selling the former Atletico Madrid player for a fee ranging from £20 to £25 million.

Although Saudi Arabian clubs have shown interest since last summer, Partey opted to remain with Arsenal, focusing on his final season with the club.

More Bawumia promises; as the veep promises farmers with tractors

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to support Ghanaian farmers with tractors and credit facilities to boost productivity and lower food prices.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Wa East, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the vital role of farming in ensuring food security and affordability.

He stressed that enhancing agricultural productivity is key to reducing food prices and committed to providing farmers with the necessary resources to increase their yields.

Dr. Bawumia drew comparisons with Brazil and China, noting that farmers in these countries produce 10 and 12 tons of maize per acre, respectively, whereas Ghana’s average yield is only four tons per acre.

To address this disparity, he pledged to introduce advanced farming techniques from Brazil and China to Ghanaian farmers.

Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to establish “super aggregators” who will buy produce directly from farmers, ensuring fair prices and reducing post-harvest losses.

He also emphasized the importance of using lime fertilizers to improve soil fertility, highlighting Ghana’s abundant lime deposits.

“I want to support our farmers. Farming is key to reducing food prices, and we will help farmers increase their productivity. In Brazil, maize yields can reach 10 tons per acre, and in China, 12 tons, but in Ghana, we only get four tons.

“We will apply the successful practices from Brazil and China to our farmers in the Wa East District to boost productivity.”

“We will establish super aggregators to buy produce from farmers, preventing waste and ensuring fair prices for their goods.

“We will also provide farmers with tractors and credit to aid in harvesting. Additionally, we will shift from using traditional fertilizers to lime, as lime significantly enhances soil fertility. Ghana has ample lime resources, and we will help our farmers utilize this resource effectively,” he said.

Member of Parliament for Central Tongu, Alexander Roosevelt, has highlighted the ongoing difficulties faced by Senior High Schools in Ghana, despite substantial government funding for the Free Senior High School policy.

In the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review, the Finance Minister revealed that more than 9 billion Ghana Cedis have been allocated to this initiative since it began.

However, Roosevelt argues that this financial commitment has not resulted in significant advancements.

Speaking to Citi News, he voiced concerns that the persistent challenges within the education system indicate that the investment has not led to substantial improvements.

“If you enter the dormitories of these boys and girls, it’s nothing to write home about. It’s filthy and congested and under that situation, the children will be called sick from time to time and you’re proud of this.

“Review it, you don’t want to do it, do you pump money into something for no value? The moment you pump money into something, the value must come back, but we can’t see the value with the Free SHS, the Member of Parliament for Central Tongu asked.

  • Africa sees 17 per cent hike in road crash deaths – WHO 2023 road safety status report

Africa sees 17 per cent hike in road crash deaths – WHO 2023 road safety status report

World Health Organisation (WHO) has underscored the urgent need for Ghana and other African nations to adopt comprehensive policies and strategies aimed at reducing road traffic accidents, injuries, and fatalities by 50% by 2030, in line with Target 3.6 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The WHO emphasized that these policies should focus on fostering sustainable transportation systems, strengthening legislative road safety frameworks, investing in data management, enhancing post-crash response, and conducting research specific to Africa’s unique challenges.

The organization highlighted that these policies must address various factors contributing to road crashes, such as inadequate enforcement of traffic laws, poor road conditions, speeding, drunk driving, and limited road safety education.

This call for action is part of the recommendations from the WHO’s 2023 road safety status report for Africa, which was presented in Nairobi, Kenya, last Tuesday.

The report revealed that Africa has become a major hotspot for road traffic fatalities, placing a heavy burden on the continent’s public health system and impeding progress toward SDG 3.6, which aims to halve global road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.

Despite representing 15% of the global population and having only 3% of the world’s vehicles, Africa accounted for 20% of global road traffic deaths. The report also noted a troubling rise in road traffic deaths over the past decade, with nearly 250,000 fatalities recorded in 2021 alone.

From 2010 to 2021, road traffic deaths in Africa increased by 17%, while the global rate decreased by 5%. The report further indicated that men aged 15 to 64 are the primary victims of these accidents, with motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians being particularly vulnerable.

The report attributed the rise to multiple factors, including inadequate road safety laws and standards, indicating: “no country in the region currently has laws that meet the best practice standards for the five key road safety behavioural risk factors – speeding, drink driving, non-use of motorcycle helmets, seatbelts and child restraints.”

It added that limited investments in alternative modes of transport, including cycling and walking, had fuelled road-related fatalities on the continent, with 13 per cent of countries having national strategies to promote walking or cycling.

“These so-called multimodal transport systems have been determined to be more equitable and environmentally friendly, and safer for road users,” the report added.

The report added that post-crash care services in the region were inadequate or unavailable in most countries – fewer than one-third have services that met recommended levels of access to pre-hospital care, emergency care, and treatment and rehabilitation services.

The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, said the findings of the report pointed to a serious public health concern for African countries, “with hundreds of thousands of lives being lost unnecessarily”.

“As WHO, we’re committed to working hand in hand with countries to tackle this preventable threat and continue to fully support all efforts to make our roads safer for motorists and pedestrians alike,” he said.

The WHO representative in Kenya, Abdourahmane Diallo, stated that for Africa to reduce the burden of road accidents, countries needed to revamp transport infrastructure, retrain motorists, and promote safety education targeting motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Significant investments have been made in the Academy’s infrastructure to support this goal. “We have invested in state-of-the-art training pitches, established a modern gym with top-quality equipment, created hostel facilities for both players and technical officials, built a high-standard swimming pool, procured a luxury bus, and set up a modern kitchen to monitor players’ meals,” Agyepong said.

He concluded by stating, “It is an ongoing process, and I am working hard with my management team to ensure that the Academy embraces the best facilities possible for its progress.”

“They would have really done well or gone to the advanced stages but unfortunately, finances have become a problem and we are appealing to you that we are representing Ghana and we need your support Mr. President to make sure that we can excel in the CAF Championship, that is why we are here,” he added.

FC Samartex is striving to reach the group stage of the tournament and potentially advance further into the knockout rounds, inspired by Medeama’s achievements last season.

Currently, the team is undergoing pre-season training in the Eastern Region and will compete against Cameroon’s Victoria United in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

The first leg will take place on August 16 at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, followed by the second leg on August 23 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Moussa Diaby’s Saudi transfer confirmed – Aston Villa reveals star headed for Al Ittihad

Aston Villa announced on Wednesday that France winger Moussa Diaby has transferred to Saudi Pro League club Al Ittihad for an estimated £50 million ($65 million).

Diaby, 25, joined Villa Park just last summer for a reported club-record fee and netted 10 goals in 54 matches across all competitions, aiding Unai Emery’s team in securing Champions League qualification.

Before his stint at Villa, Diaby spent four years in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen and had previously played under Emery at Paris Saint-Germain.

In his new role, Diaby will join fellow French players Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kanté, as well as ex-Liverpool midfielder Fabinho.

Al Ittihad, led by head coach Laurent Blanc, aims to improve upon their fifth-place finish from last season.

Video shows police officer stomping on man’s head at airport

A police officer was filmed repeatedly kicking and stamping on the head of a man lying face down at Manchester Airport. The uniformed officer, seen holding a Taser, struck the man twice while other officers shouted at onlookers to stay back.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at the airport’s Terminal 2, where Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said firearms officers had been attacked while trying to arrest someone involved in a fight. GMP has referred itself to the police watchdog.

The video sparked widespread anger, leading to a protest outside the police station in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, on Wednesday evening. The Manchester Evening News reported that one protester told the crowd they would “no longer settle” for “police brutality.”

“A protest held last night outside Rochdale Police Station about our response at Manchester Airport has concluded safely, without incident,” Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry said in a statement obtained early on Thursday by BBC News.

GMP earlier said one officer had been removed from operational duties over the events, and it had referred itself to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) over the events.

In an earlier statement, Assistant Chief Constable Chaudhry said: “We know that a film of an incident at Manchester Airport that is circulating widely shows an event that is truly shocking, and that people are rightly extremely concerned about.

“The use of such force in an arrest is an unusual occurrence and one that we understand creates alarm.

“One male officer has been removed from operational duties and we are making a voluntary referral of our policing response to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.”

The IOPC said it would assess GMP’s referral “and decide what further action is required”.

Firearms officers had been called to the airport at about 20:25 BST on Tuesday after reports of an altercation by members of the public, a police spokesman said.

Three officers were “punched to the ground” in a “violent assault” when they attempted to arrest one of the suspects, he added.

“As the attending officers were firearms officers, there was a clear risk during this assault of their firearms being taken from them.”

Three officers were taken to hospital for treatment, with one female officer suffering a broken nose.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of assault, assault on an emergency worker, affray, and obstructing police, while two other men were also arrested on suspicion of affray and assault on an emergency worker, police confirmed.

    ‘Difficult to watch’

Amar Minhas from Leeds told the BBC he was coming through arrivals when he saw the scene unfold.

He said police officers had approached one of the men, in his early 20s, and told him he was a wanted man, before “they pinned him up against a wall”.

Another man then “started on the police” and a fight ensued, he said.

The man who was being pinned against the wall started “throwing punches, he was Tasered, and fell to the floor”, Mr Minhas said.

“That’s when the policeman kicked him.”

The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, described the video as “disturbing” and said he recognised “the widespread and deep concern” it had caused.

He said he had raised his concerns with GMP’s deputy chief constable.

Andy George, president of the National Black Police Association, described the video as “difficult to watch”.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, he wrote: “Whilst policing is a really difficult job, we are trained to a higher standard and held to a higher standard.”

Home Office minister Dame Diana Johnson also posted on X: “I am aware of disturbing footage from an incident at Manchester Airport this afternoon and understand the public concern it has prompted.

“I have asked for a full update from Greater Manchester Police.”

Commenting on the protest in Rochdale, and noting the referral already made to the IOPC, ACC Chaudhry said: “We understand the immense feeling of concern and worry that people feel about our response and fully respect their right to demonstrate their views peacefully.”

He added: “We have spent the evening listening to community feedback and will continue to engage with communities and elected members to maintain strong partnership links and understand local views.”

Ex- Black Stars’ Derek Boateng wishes for Kwesi Nyantakyi’s return as GFA President

Former Black Stars midfielder Derek Boateng has voiced his admiration for Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and expressed a desire for his return.

Nyantakyi is widely recognized as one of the most successful GFA presidents.

In an interview, Boateng reflected on the abrupt end of Nyantakyi’s tenure, which was terminated by the Number 12 exposé by undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas—a scandal that significantly damaged Nyantakyi’s reputation.

Boateng is of the opinion that Ghanaian football would have continued to thrive under Nyantakyi’s leadership.

“I wish Nyantakyi could oversee Ghana Football again. His track record speaks for itself, and it’s unfortunate how things turned out,” he told Kingdom FM.

“I cannot say whether the accusations against him were true, as I wasn’t present. However, I know he made significant contributions to the sport,” he added.

Boateng, however, has been critical of the current administration under Kurt Okraku, asserting that they have not succeeded in elevating the standard of the game.

He criticized the administration’s handling of criticism, saying, “I have reservations about Kurt Okraku’s leadership because they seem to take criticism personally. Constructive feedback is essential for the improvement of our sports, and it should be welcomed.

“In one meeting, he mentioned employing many former footballers in national teams, but for me, competence should be the priority, not just being a former player. Our game is not in good shape, and there’s a lot to do. We need to start from the grassroots because the foundation is crucial,” he added.

Under Nyantakyi’s presidency, Ghana reached several notable achievements, such as winning the U-20 World Cup and making its World Cup debut in Germany in 2006.

The Black Stars also competed in the World Cups held in South Africa in 2010 and Brazil in 2014.

Additionally, the team reached the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2010 and 2015 but did not secure the championship.

‘Agent’ Bellingham allegedly attempting to convince Trent Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham might be transitioning into an agent role, as the Real Madrid star was recently seen dining with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is linked with a move to the Blancos, in Los Angeles.

Both players are enjoying a well-deserved break following intense domestic and international seasons. Bellingham played a key role in Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League victories in 2023-24, while Alexander-Arnold contributed to another Carabao Cup win for Jurgen Klopp in his final season at Liverpool.

The duo also featured in England’s journey to the Euro 2024 final, where they experienced another setback as Spain clinched the trophy. Their shared experiences have forged a strong connection, and they are now vacationing together in the U.S.

Earlier, it was reported that Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson had tried to persuade Bellingham to join Liverpool when he was leaving Borussia Dortmund. Instead, the 20-year-old midfielder opted for Spain, and now the situation has shifted.

Alexander-Arnold is in the final year of his contract with Liverpool, and rumors of a move to Santiago Bernabeu have surfaced. The Mirror has obtained footage of the Liverpool right-back dining with Bellingham in LA, which could indicate discussions about future moves.

Liverpool is expected to negotiate terms with Alexander-Arnold soon as they embark on a new era under Dutch coach Arne Slot. If he does not sign a new deal, he will be free to discuss pre-contract agreements with clubs outside England starting in January, potentially moving toward free agency.

Paul Pogba believes ‘all will be well’ as he begins his appeal against global football ban

Paul Pogba remains optimistic as he prepares to appeal his worldwide football ban, confidently stating that “all will be well” in the end.

The World Cup winner, currently with Serie A giants Juventus, was handed a lengthy suspension in February 2024.

This ban has put his career on pause, preventing the 31-year-old from training with or playing for his Italian team.

The sanction was imposed after Pogba failed doping tests in 2023, where elevated levels of testosterone were found in his system. A ‘B’ sample also returned positive results.

Now, the France international is taking his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Pogba has told Forbes when asked about his ban: “It’s difficult to be totally honest. Football has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

However, I have my family, my faith, my friends, and my fans who have supported me, which makes things easier. All will be well.”

He added on efforts to clear his name: “Although I can’t speak so much about this, all roads lead to the appeal date. Until then, my focus is on staying fit and looking forward to the appeal.”

Kylian Mbappe might have a new club and a new partner, as Real Madrid’s latest ‘Galactico’ was spotted getting close with model Dani Grace Almeida in Miami.

The France international has joined Santiago Bernabeu as a free agent, leaving Paris Saint-Germain as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. He was officially presented to Blancos fans at a sold-out ceremony.

Mbappe is not included in Real Madrid’s plans for their U.S. tour as he recovers from a broken nose sustained during the Euro 2024 campaign.

The 25-year-old is currently in the United States, recharging ahead of the 2024-25 season. According to Page Six, Mbappe was seen in Florida holding hands with Almeida.

The duo enjoyed activities like bowling at Lucky Strike, partying at LIV nightclub, and dining at Kiki.

A source in the States has said: “They were very cosy with their hands on each others’ legs and held hands walking out.”
Almeida shared a video on social media of her attending a PSG game in April – where she sat in the section reserved for guests of Mbappe.

She has told Page Six when contacted about the romance rumours: “I do not personally wish to comment on our status at this time.”

Mbappe was formerly linked to Belgian model Stephanie Rose Bertram. Now, he seems to be embracing new beginnings both professionally and personally, with his Real Madrid debut anticipated in the UEFA Super Cup against Atalanta on August 14.

Arsenal’s Arteta lauds backup goalkeeper Karl Hein after penalty heroics in Los Angeles friendly

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised backup goalkeeper Karl Hein for his “good performance” following his penalty-saving heroics in a friendly against Bournemouth.

With regular keepers David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale on a break after their national teams, Spain and England, reached the Euro 2024 final, Hein took on the role of senior goalkeeper during Arsenal’s three-match tour in the United States.

The Estonian shot-stopper seized the opportunity to impress Arteta in the pre-season match against the Cherries.

The game at Dignity Health Sports Park ended in a 1-1 draw, with Fabio Vieira scoring for the Gunners in the 18th minute.

The match then went to a penalty shootout, where Hein shone by saving penalties from Philip Billing and Ryan Christie, ultimately leading Arsenal to a 5-4 victory in the shootout.

Arteta was delighted with Hein’s performance and stated: “I’m very happy for him. Obviously, he had to be really patient and wait for his opportunity.

He came back from his holidays really sharp and prepared; he knew that he had big games ahead of him and he started tonight, and I think he had a really good performance.”

Despite his impressive showing, a decision regarding Hein’s future at the club looms large.

The 22-year-old Estonia international signed a long-term contract extension in the summer, but the arrival of England youth international Tommy Setford from Ajax suggests Hein might be loaned out to gain regular playing time.

“That’s the conversation we are having,” said Arteta.

“Obviously, David and Aaron are away at the moment and we are really really short in that position, but we want to develop our players – especially a player like Karl who has big potential and a big future ahead of him.

He needs to play games, so we’re going to explore that option as well.”

Hein’s heroics in the penalty shootout against Bournemouth have showcased his potential and readiness to step up when needed.

As Arsenal continue their pre-season preparations, the young goalkeeper will have another chance to demonstrate his skills against Premier League giants Manchester United on July 27.

Black Stars: Otto Addo needs to be tough in his decision making

Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has urged Black Stars head coach Otto Addo to remain firm and decisive in his decision-making to enhance the team’s performance.

Addo, who was recently reappointed as the head coach, has already made a positive impact by achieving back-to-back victories in the World Cup qualifiers.

Agyemang-Badu, a former Udinese player, expressed his support for Addo’s strategies and decisions.

The 33-year-old midfielder was particularly impressed with the team’s recent performances against Mali and the Central African Republic, citing these matches as a solid foundation for future growth.

One notable decision by Addo was to exclude captain Andre Ayew from these games, a move that garnered widespread praise.

“He’s bringing in new good guys. There are a lot of lapses in the team. That one, we can’t run away from that. He’s well experienced,” Agyemang-Badu told Joy Sports.

“This is the second coming. He knows where he needs to beef up. We will support him. I mean, I’m a fan of him. Let me tell you that for a fact. I think he will build a good team for us.”

Agyemang-Badu emphasized the importance of Addo remaining firm in his decisions, saying, “He should be very tough like how he is as usual. Take decisions that he thinks will help him and help the team. That’s the most important thing.”

The Black Stars are preparing for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in September. Fans and pundits alike are eagerly awaiting the implementation of Addo’s strategies.

  • I won’t accept responsibility for Norwegian-paralympic visa scandal – Sports Minister

Sports Minister Mustapha Yusif has slammed the Norwegian Embassy in Ghana for inadequate oversight in the application process for Ghanaians who entered Norway under false pretenses as Paralympic athletes.

This criticism follows reports that nine out of an 11-member Ghanaian Para-athlete team went missing upon arriving in Oslo for the Bergen Marathon this year.

A statement from the Ministry of National Security, addressed to the Sports Ministry and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, revealed that one para-athlete, Nana Antwi, has been detained by Norwegian authorities.

Additionally, the team’s coach, George Gyamfi Gyasi, died shortly after collapsing and being admitted to Oslo University Hospital on April 28, 2024.

The National Paralympic Committee has suspended three individuals believed to be involved in the incident.

The Minority is demanding an investigation into the matter. North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has claimed that the team did not officially register for the marathon, suggesting they had no intention of participating.

He also pointed out that the team’s ability to breach protocols and bypass institutions indicates that there may be more to the situation than is currently known.

“Diplomatic envoys or foreign service staff have questions to answer. They did not even register for the game. They had no intention to participate in the game,” he said.

Responding to a question at a news conference in Accra about whether or not he takes responsibility for the latest scandal, Mustapha Yussif indicated that “the Norwegian authority which issued the Visas to the Athletes didn’t see it prudent to even verify from the ministry to see whether these are genuine athletes or not so to your question whether I take responsibility, I’m sorry I can’t.”

President of the National Paralympic Committee Samson Deen claims his signature was forged.

“We engaged, we checked and we realised that the letter was written, they forged my signature, forged my letter and applied for visas for some people who are not athletes,” he said

  • Ghana’s Youth Resource Centres in sorry state; Sports Minister explains why

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif has pointed to insufficient funds as the reason behind the poor condition of the National Youth Resource Centres.

In a press briefing on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, the Minister explained that while the project is 90 percent finished, contractors have not been paid, which has hindered the completion of the work.

He added that because of these payment delays, the projects have not been formally handed over to his office, leaving them still unavailable for use.

“We had challenges with some of them regarding payment to the contractors. I must admit. But because the contractors have not handed over the projects officially to us, we can’t go and use them. Because we have not commissioned them.”

He assured his sector is putting measures in place to get the needed funds for the contracts to finish the abandoned projects.

“We are working very hard to make sure that they get their payment and they can go back and complete them for us to use,” he said.

The deteriorating state of the Youth Resource Centres has led to public outcry regarding the management of these facilities by authorities.

The stadiums affected include the Ho Sports Complex, Navrongo Sports Complex, Dormaa Multipurpose Sports Complex, and the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex in Kaneshie.

  • The beginning of their journey to opposition – Ato Forson on NPP over 2024 Mid-Year Budget

The beginning of their journey to opposition – Ato Forson on NPP over 2024 Mid-Year Budget

Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has expressed his dissatisfaction with the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review, suggesting it indicates the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is on the brink of becoming the opposition.

Dr. Forson’s comments came after Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam presented the budget review on Tuesday, July 23.

Dr. Adam’s presentation focused on the government’s efforts to reverse adverse economic trends and manage expenses, reporting a provisional national debt of GH¢742 billion (US$50.9 billion) as of June, which amounts to 70.6% of GDP. He assured that the government is adhering to its budgetary limits.

Despite these assurances, Dr. Forson criticized the review for failing to eliminate certain taxes, including the COVID levy, E-Levy, and Emissions Levy. He argued that these taxes contribute to Ghana’s high tax burden, which is driving businesses and citizens away.

Dr. Forson contended that the government’s lack of innovative solutions reflects a failure to address the country’s urgent economic challenges effectively.

The Minority Leader also referenced the Majority caucus’s jubilation song “Abamu awie,” suggesting that the NPP is now on its way to opposition.

The Minority Leader also referenced the Majority caucus’s jubilation song “Abamu awie,” suggesting that the NPP is now on its way to opposition.

Dr. Forson highlighted that, in his opinion, the review revealed the NPP’s shortcomings in addressing the needs and expectations of Ghanaians.

He urged the government to reassess its approach and implement more impactful policies to rejuvenate the economy and offer greater relief to the public.

“At the very least Ghanaians expected that this mid-year review would have removed or abolished a number of taxes that has made Ghana a high tax regime to the extent that businesses are moving out of the country and the ordinary Ghanian is actually leaving the shores of this country. For example example COVID levy, E-Levy, ‘Borla’ tax, tax on domestic electricity, emission levy.

“Mr Speaker this is a missed opportunity. Mr Speaker instead the minister did not announce one single new policy. The minister did not introduce new ideas. Mr Speaker unfortunately Ghana is on autopilot, and our economy is on autopilot…All what I want to tell them, they are bereft of new ideas and I’m happy that they sang’ abamu awie’, you are on your way to opposition,” he stated.

Law against anal sex in Ghana legally valid – Supreme Court rules

Supreme Court has affirmed the constitutionality of the law prohibiting unnatural carnal knowledge, including anal sex.

On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, the seven-member panel unanimously rejected a challenge to Section 104 (1) (b) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie led the court, but a detailed explanation of their decision will be made available at the court’s registry.

The challenge was brought by Dr. Prince Obiri-Korang, a lecturer at the University of Ghana Law School.

Section 104 (1) (b) criminalizes unnatural carnal knowledge of individuals aged 16 and older, even if consensual, and classifies it as a misdemeanor. Section 104 (2) defines unnatural carnal knowledge as sex conducted in an unnatural manner or with an animal.

Dr. Obiri-Korang contended that Section 104(1)(b) violated the right to privacy under Article 18, the right against discrimination under Article 17, and the protection of personal liberties under Article 14 of the 1992 Constitution.

Kamala Harris has Beyoncé’s permission to use her song ‘Freedom’ for her presidential campaign

Vice President Kamala Harris made a grand entrance during her first official visit to her campaign headquarters on Monday evening, stepping out to Beyoncé’s song “Freedom.”

A source close to Harris informed CNN that her team received approval from Beyoncé’s representatives to use the song throughout her presidential campaign.

Despite Beyoncé’s strict clearance guidelines for her music, she swiftly approved Harris’ campaign’s request to use “Freedom” just hours before Harris walked out to the song on Monday, according to the source.

While Beyoncé has not formally endorsed Harris since President Joe Biden announced he would not seek a second term, granting permission to use “Freedom” as a campaign song suggests Harris has the superstar’s support.

Neither the Harris campaign nor a representative for Beyoncé responded to CNN’s requests for comment.

Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, endorsed Harris on Sunday, shortly after Biden’s announcement.

“New, Youthful, Sharp , energy !!!!” Knowles posted on her Instagram with a photo of herself alongside Harris. “Putting personal Ego, power, and fame aside.

That is the definition of a great leader, Thank you, President Biden, for your service and your leadership. Go Vice President Kamala Harris for President. Let’s Go”

Beyoncé has a history of endorsing Democratic candidates. In 2013, she sang the National Anthem at the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

In 2016, Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z headlined a pre-election concert for Clinton in Cleveland, Ohio, with her backup dancers dressed in blue pantsuits to honor the woman who could have been the first female president.

“I want my daughter to grow up seeing a woman lead our country and knowing that her possibilities are limitless,” Beyoncé said at the time. “And that’s why I am with her.”

In 2020, Beyoncé endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket, posting on her Instagram to encourage her followers to vote.

“Freedom,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, debuted on Beyoncé’s 2016 album “Lemonade.” The Grammy-nominated song became an anthem in many demonstrations following the 2020 death of George Floyd.

Pay attention to our contracts, it’s beyond GFA – Black Princesses coach to govt

Black Princesses coach Yusif Basigi has called on the government to extend contract provisions to all national team coaches, not just the Black Stars coach.

In an interview, Coach Basigi highlighted the struggles faced by national team coaches due to the lack of government contracts.

He argued that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is not adequately equipped to manage these contractual issues and urged the government to take charge.

“When it comes to contract matters, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) cannot handle them,” the Hasaacas Ladies coach told Onua FM.

“If they are to enter contracts with coaches, it will be a worry. It is the government that must pay attention to us because the national team belongs to the government and the GFA is a caretaker.

So, government should turn attention to us because we are suffering,” he added.

Basigi is set to lead the Black Princesses in the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, where Ghana will compete in Group E with Japan, New Zealand, and Austria.

The team is determined to progress beyond the group stage, a goal that has eluded them in their previous six appearances.

Man Utd vows to consult fans before selling stadium naming rights

Manchester United have assured fans that they will be consulted before any decision is made on selling the naming rights to Old Trafford.

However, the club has acknowledged that renaming the stadium is a possibility being considered.

United are currently exploring options to either redevelop Old Trafford or construct a new stadium at the same location, with estimated costs reaching up to £2 billion ($2.58bn). According to United’s COO Collette Roache, “all possible funding options” will be evaluated.

This could include the sale of naming rights for a new stadium, similar to Barcelona’s agreement to rename their stadium Spotify Camp Nou. Roache emphasized at a recent fans’ forum that supporters will have a say before any final decision is made.

“You may have seen the media speculation around naming rights and it was just that; speculation,” said Roache. “We must look at all possible funding options, but it’s still early stages with no decisions made.

What we can promise is that fans, through this forum and other channels, will be kept informed and consulted every step of the way.”

Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival as co-owner, work has already started on a £50m revamp of United’s Carrington training ground.

Improvements are also being made to Old Trafford, including upgrading the players’ tunnel.

“The players’ tunnel has not seen any major changes since it was opened in 1993 following the redevelopment of the Stretford End,” said Roache. “But when the players walk out against Fulham next month, they will find a much smarter, more modern tunnel interior.”

Manchester United have sought to address fan concerns about the possibility of competitive matches being played overseas.

Despite rumors suggesting that Premier League games might be relocated to international venues, COO Collette Roache has reassured supporters that the club is “not pursuing” such plans.

Marseille finalize transfer of Pierre-Emile from Tottenham Hotspur

Marseille have secured the services of defensive midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg from Tottenham Hotspur on an initial loan, which includes an obligation to buy.

The deal is reportedly valued at €20 million ($21.8m). Højbjerg joins Mason Greenwood, formerly of Manchester United, at Marseille, under the management of ex-Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Højbjerg, 28, transferred to Spurs from Southampton in 2020 and has since made 184 appearances for the north London team, netting 10 goals.

Last season, he played in 36 Premier League matches for Spurs, starting in 26 of them.

The Denmark international began his professional career with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, where he also had loan spells with Augsburg and Schalke.

He has earned 81 caps for Denmark, scoring 10 goals, and was part of the squad that reached the round of 16 at Euro 2024, where they were defeated by Germany.

Canadian soccer assistant coach, analyst sacked over drone usage

Canadian women’s soccer team assistant coach and an analyst have been kicked out of the Olympic squad after New Zealand said their team had their training session disrupted by a drone flown by a staff member of their Group A opponents, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) said Wednesday.

Head coach Bev Priestman has also removed herself from coaching the team against New Zealand in Group A on Thursday, the COC added.

“Joseph Lombardi, an unaccredited analyst with Canada Soccer, is being removed from the Canadian Olympic Team and will be sent home immediately,” COC said in a statement.

“Jasmine Mander, an assistant coach to whom Mr. Lombardi reports to, is being removed from the Canadian Olympic Team and will be sent home immediately.”

“On behalf of our entire team, I first and foremost want to apologize to the players and staff at New Zealand Football and to the players on Team Canada,” she said.

“This does not represent the values that our team stands for. I am ultimately responsible for conduct in our program.

“Accordingly, to emphasize our team’s commitment to integrity, I have decided to voluntarily withdraw from coaching the match on Thursday. In the spirit of accountability, I do this with the interests of both teams in mind and to ensure everyone feels that the sportsmanship of this game is upheld.”

The drone was flown on Monday and the incident was reported by the NZOC to the police and to the International Olympic Committee’s integrity unit.

“The NZOC and New Zealand Football are committed to upholding the integrity and fairness of the Olympic Games and are deeply shocked and disappointed by this incident, which occurred just three days before the sides are due to face each other in their opening game of Paris 2024,” NZOC said in a statement.

“At this time the NZOC’s main priority is to support the New Zealand women’s football athletes and wider team as they start their campaign.”

“I say goodbye” – Nacho bids emotional farewell to Real Madrid before Saudi move

Nacho Fernández bid an emotional farewell to Real Madrid on Wednesday, concluding a remarkable 23-year tenure with the LaLiga club.

The Spain international, who captained the team to a Champions League and LaLiga double last season, departed the club at the end of his contract.

Earlier this month, he also played a crucial role in helping Spain win the Euro 2024 trophy. The 34-year-old defender has announced that he will continue his career with Saudi Pro League club Al Qadsiah.

In a private ceremony closed to fans and media at the club house and attended by his teammates, former players and Madrid president Florentino Pérez, a tearful Nacho said: “It’s the most beautiful ending I could have imagined.

I leave as captain and having had the honour of lifting the 15th European Cup.

“I leave because I wanted another experience in my career and face new challenges. I want to be remembered as a youth player that gave his all to the club.

“I have grown up for almost 24 years in the best club in the world. Real Madrid has taught me to win and lose, but above all to live. This club is everything to me. I say goodbye knowing that I have given my all for this club.”

Nacho, who joined Madrid at the age of 10, lifted a joint-club record of 26 trophies, including six Champions League titles. He made his first-team debut in 2012.

Pérez handed Nacho a gold and diamond badge and said: “We are proud to have had you for these past 23 years. You came here aged 10 and you have played in all of our teams.

I want you to know that we feel the utmost pride in one of Real Madrid’s most legendary youth players I want to thank you because you have given your soul to this club. You know this is and will always be your home.”

2023/24 financial report: Real Madrid makes history as first club to make over €1bn in revenue

Real Madrid has announced that they are the highest-revenue-generating football club globally, surpassing €1 billion ($1.08 billion) in revenue according to their 2023-24 financial report.

Their revenue for the 2023-24 season, excluding player transfers, hit €1.073 billion. This marks an increase of €230 million, or 27%, compared to the previous year.

Winners of LaLiga, the UEFA Champions League, and the Spanish Super Cup, Real Madrid concluded the 2023-24 financial year with after-tax profits of €16 million, reflecting a 32% rise from the previous season.

Last season, Forbes valued Real Madrid at $6.07 billion, ranking it as the 11th most valuable sports team in the world and the most valuable football club. In comparison, Manchester United was placed 13th by Forbes with a valuation of $3 billion.

The Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees led Forbes’ most recent list with valuations of $9 billion and $7.1 billion, respectively.

“This is an unprecedented figure for any football club,” a Real Madrid statement said. “The club maintains its sound financial status with a net equity of €574m.

“The club has continued its profitable trajectory year after year since the turn of the century.

“Every line of business has seen growth, with the exception of broadcasting rights, where revenues received from LaLiga in 2023-24 were lower than in the 2022-23 season.”

Madrid, who recently secured France star Kylian Mbappé on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, is also predicting record-breaking figures for the 2024-25 financial year.

The statement added: “The club expects this commercial boost to continue and grow even stronger in the 2024-25 financial year, supported by the image-related benefits derived from both the composition of the playing squad and sporting success, as well as the renovated stadium.”

Paris police are investigating the alleged ‘gang rape’ of an Australian woman

French authorities are probing an alleged rape of a 25-year-old Australian woman by five men in central Paris. The woman reportedly sought refuge in a kebab shop in the Pigalle area on Saturday morning, with her dress partly torn, according to local media.

While no arrests have been made, prosecutors have confirmed the investigation is being treated as a “gang rape.”

The incident occurred just days before the opening of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Le Parisien reported that restaurant owners called for assistance upon seeing the woman’s condition.

Firefighters attended to her immediately after the alleged assault, and she was subsequently taken to Bichat hospital for a medical examination.

The Paris Prosecutor’s Office has stated that police are examining CCTV footage as part of their investigation into the allegations.

“The investigation into the charge of gang rape likely to have been committed on the night of 19 to 20 July has been entrusted to the second judicial police district,” it said.

In preparation for the upcoming Olympics, Paris is seeing a significant police presence to ensure safety. Officers have been patrolling the city in large numbers since last week, with armed guards stationed around the River Seine.

Several security zones have been established, dividing Paris into different areas.

To enter specific zones, such as the one around the Eiffel Tower, individuals must apply for a special games pass through a platform managed by the police. The Olympics begin on Friday, prompting these heightened security measures.

  • Fashion mogul Peter Nygard faces sentencing for sexual assault charges

Fashion mogul Peter Nygard faces sentencing for sexual assault charges

Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard, once the head of a prosperous global apparel empire, is set to be sentenced in a Canadian court this week for sexual assault. Convicted by a Toronto jury last November of assaulting four women, Nygard had denied the charges.

The upcoming sentencing will not conclude the 83-year-old’s legal troubles. He faces additional sexual assault and sex trafficking charges in Montreal, Winnipeg, and the US, all of which he has denied.

Nygard stands accused of leveraging his influence and wealth to systematically assault and traffic women in both countries over several decades. For years, he led an international clothing design, manufacturing, and supply business, Nygard International, headquartered in Winnipeg, Canada, with offices in New York City and California.

During his six-week criminal trial in Toronto last autumn, prosecutors argued that Nygard, once estimated to be worth at least $700 million (£542 million), used his “status” to assault five women in incidents spanning from the late 1980s to 2005. His defense lawyers contended that four of the five women, who are also part of a US class-action lawsuit on behalf of his alleged victims, were motivated by financial gain.

Nygard also claimed during the trial that he did not recall four of the five women, and that he would have never acted “in that kind of manner”.
A jury found him guilty on four counts and not guilty on a fifth count of sexual assault and on one count of forcible confinement.
Nygard’s sentencing, scheduled to take place on Wednesday and Thursday, has been repeatedly pushed back, with two of his lawyers resigning over ethical concerns and causing delays.

His current lawyer, Gerri Wiebe, applied to delay sentencing again – once in June to get up to speed on Nygard’s case and again in July to gather more expert testimony on her client’s medical condition.
Nygard had previously applied for the remainder of his hearings to be virtual, saying his health was declining.

But during a remotely held hearing last Friday, Toronto Superior Court Justice Robert Goldstein said he “simply will not entertain” any further delays unless Nygard “is in a coma”.

Prosecutors in the Toronto case revealed that Peter Nygard lured victims, aged 16 to 28 at the time, to a private luxury bedroom located in his firm’s headquarters. One prosecutor described the room as having “a giant bed, a bar, and doors with no handles and automatic locks controlled by Peter Nygard.” Once the women were trapped in the room, Nygard allegedly assaulted them.

Nygard now faces another sexual assault case in Montreal, where he is charged with assaulting and forcibly confining a woman over two decades ago. A preliminary inquiry for that case is set to begin in January 2025.

Additionally, he is facing charges in Winnipeg related to offences allegedly committed in 1993, involving a 20-year-old woman.

In that instance, he is accused of holding the woman captive and raping her after inviting her to a modeling job. Nygard has denied these charges.

Following the completion of his criminal cases in Canada, Nygard is set to be extradited to the US. There, authorities allege he engaged in a “decades-long pattern of criminal conduct” involving at least a dozen victims worldwide. In December 2020, New York prosecutors charged him with sex trafficking and racketeering offenses.

The US Department of Justice accused him of targeting “women and minor-aged girls who came from disadvantaged economic backgrounds or had a history of abuse.”

They claimed that Nygard maintained close relationships with certain victims, whom he referred to as “girlfriends” or “assistants,” using them to recruit new women for him to exploit sexually.

A separate class-action lawsuit has been filed against him by 57 women in the US, though it has been put on hold due to his ongoing criminal proceedings. Nygard has been in custody in Canada since his arrest in Winnipeg in 2020.

In February of that year, he stepped down as chairman of his firm shortly before it filed for bankruptcy following a raid by US authorities on its New York headquarters.

  • Family members of late Ghanaian Paralympic coach disappear after arrival in Norway

Family members of late Ghanaian Paralympic coach disappear after arrival in Norway

Family members of the late Ghanaian Paralympic coach who passed away in Norway have gone missing after traveling to the country to handle his burial arrangements, according to reports.

Journalist Bright Kankam Boadu revealed that after the death of Coach George Gyamfi Gyasi, three of his relatives were sent to Norway to manage his funeral proceedings.

Upon their arrival, these family members disappeared and are now being pursued by Norwegian authorities.

“Following the death of the Ghanaian coach, some family members were sent to Norway to perform certain rites. The three family members who were sent have also absconded,” he said on Kumasi-based Pure FM.

The latest development adds to the bizarre story of how an 11-member Paralympic team fled upon arrival in Norway.

Providing further details on the issue, Saddick Adams of Angel Broadcasting Network said, “Gyasi, who led the team, did not collapse; rather, the head coach succumbed to a serious illness that led to his admission to Oslo University Hospital (ULEVAL).

“The scandal came to light after the head coach felt unwell. He couldn’t deal with the weather at the time, so he passed away.”

The Paralympics team has become topical after the president of the National Paralympics Committee, Samson Deen, revealed that the said 11-member team who absconded in Norway forged documents to secure visas and embark on the trip.

“They forged my signature on the letter and applied for visas for some people who have no affiliation with the Ghana Paralympic Team,” he said.

Samson Deen’s explanation followed a report from National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah, who, in a letter dated July 3, 2024, disclosed that 9 out of 11 members of the Paralympic team were missing.

The letter mentioned that the team was supposed to participate in the Fjordkraft Bergen City Marathon on April 27, 2024.

  • Pep unsure of Ederson’s stay at Man City amid Saudi links

Pep unsure of Ederson’s stay at Man City amid Saudi links

Pep Guardiola has expressed uncertainty about Ederson’s future at Manchester City due to interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Al-Ittihad is reportedly prepared to meet City’s £50 million ($65 million/€60 million) valuation of the Brazilian goalkeeper, who has already agreed on personal terms and is eager for a new challenge outside England.

Following City’s 4-3 friendly defeat to Celtic in North Carolina, Guardiola acknowledged that he is unsure about Ederson’s next move.

“I’d like him to stay but it depends on other clubs,” he told reporters. “I don’t know the situation. There have been no contacts in the last days. It’s a question of training, being with us until the transfer window finishes and we’ll see.”

While it’s still unclear where Ederson will be playing his football next season, Kalvin Phillips looks set to exit City, most likely via another loan spell after a challenging stint at West Ham.

He was hooked off at half-time against Celtic, a decision Guardiola attributed to protecting the player following his injury struggles towards the end of last season.

“That’s why we didn’t give him more minutes,” Guardiola explained. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. He knows the situation, and we’ll see.”

If Ederson chooses to depart, Guardiola is resolute in ensuring Manchester City are not left lacking in the goalkeeping department. Reports indicate that City have pinpointed Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma as a potential successor.

While City proceed with their pre-season training in the United States, the transfer operations at Etihad Stadium are in full swing. Guardiola’s remarks reveal his wish to keep the Brazilian goalkeeper, but the growing appeal of the Saudi Pro League could lead to the manager losing his primary shot-stopper.

Alexi Lalas ready to take up USMNT job ‘for free’ amid coach hunt

Alexi Lalas has expressed his willingness to take on the United States men’s national team coaching job “for free” amid the ongoing search for Gregg Berhalter’s successor.

The U.S. hosted the Copa America in early July, but their group stage exit led to Berhalter’s dismissal. As the hunt for a new coach continues, Lalas, a U.S. soccer icon, stated it would be a “pleasure” to coach the national team.

When asked if he would accept the USMNT job, the former United States international replied on X: “Absolutely. It would be my honor [sic], pleasure, and duty. Not only that, I would do it for free.”

The USMNT is searching for a new manager to build momentum for the 2026 World Cup, which they will co-host with Canada and Mexico.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reportedly declined the offer, and now France Under-21 coach Thierry Henry is considered a candidate to replace Berhalter.

Selecting the right manager is crucial for their future success.

As the search continues, the United States will play a friendly against Canada on September 7, followed by a match against New Zealand three days later. It is uncertain if a new manager will be appointed by then.

  • England job for Pep, Jurgen Klopp would be ‘boring’ – Fmr three Lions star warns

England job for Pep, Jurgen Klopp would be ‘boring’ – Fmr three Lions star warns

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are seen as popular choices for the England manager position, but Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola would likely find the role “boring.”

After England’s Euro final defeat to Spain, Gareth Southgate resigned as manager after nearly eight years. As the Football Association searches for his replacement, former England player Glen Johnson believes Gerrard and Lampard would be well-received by fans despite their lackluster managerial records.

Klopp, formerly of Liverpool, and Manchester City’s Guardiola are considered top candidates, but Johnson thinks neither would be interested in leaving club football for the less frequent action of the international stage.

The former Liverpool defender told Betfred: “I can’t really see either of them [Guardiola and Klopp] being England manager. Both of them wear their hearts on their sleeves, they’re super passionate and ultimately, I believe both of them may find the job a bit boring to be honest.

It’s clear that they both enjoy the day to day work that comes with club management and that’s something they won’t get at international level.

“It would obviously be quite a considerable jump for either of them [Lampard and Gerrard], as they’re early on in their managerial careers, but sometimes you’ve just got to roll the dice.

I’m sure the players would love to have either of them managing them and sometimes you’ve just got to take the risk. If Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard was the England manager, then I believe the fans would love to see that.”

Despite leading England to two Euros finals and a World Cup semi-final, Southgate decided to step down from his role.

He has been the most successful England manager since Sir Alfred Ramsey, who led the team to their 1966 World Cup victory. Replacing Southgate and building on his achievements is a significant challenge.

Among the managers favored to become the next England boss, four stand out as bookmakers’ favorites.

Guardiola, whose contract with City expires in 2025, Gerrard, currently managing Al-Ettifaq, Klopp, who has stepped down as Liverpool manager, and Lampard, who is currently seeking a new position, are all in the running. It remains uncertain who will ultimately succeed Southgate.

  • This is how decision on Greenwood’s return to Man Utd was ruled out

This is how decision on Greenwood’s return to Man Utd was ruled out

Rationale behind Manchester United’s decision not to reintegrate new Marseille signing Mason Greenwood has come to light. Prior to Greenwood’s £23.3 million ($30m) transfer to Marseille last week, United’s management deliberated over the forward’s future.

Former chief executive Richard Arnold decided against bringing Greenwood back into the squad last summer after plans to reintegrate him leaked, causing a furious backlash from fans.

In February, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had not dismissed the idea of Greenwood’s return, but the player ultimately joined Marseille on a permanent basis.

According to The Athletic, the new INEOS-led regime at United revisited Arnold’s decision and evaluated the feasibility of Greenwood’s return.

They concluded that public sentiment would strongly oppose his comeback and deemed it would be too disruptive and distracting for the team.

Additionally, they needed to raise funds for new signings while adhering to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Greenwood, who had a successful loan spell at Getafe last season and was linked with moves to Lazio, Barcelona, and other clubs, reportedly was not interested in returning to Old Trafford. He was also allegedly displeased with how the club handled their internal disciplinary process.

He had not played for United since January 2022, following his arrest on charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive and controlling behaviour—charges that were dropped in February 2023.

Despite some criticism from Marseille fans after his move to the Ligue 1 team, Greenwood could feature in a pre-season friendly against SC Toulon on Wednesday ahead of the new season.

Neymar back on the training grounds as he partakes in Al-Hilal agility drills

Neymar looked sharp during Al-Hilal’s agility drills as he began training on grass, intensifying his recovery from ACL surgery.

Initially expected to dazzle audiences in Riyadh, Neymar’s journey hit a major roadblock in October 2023 when he sustained a severe ACL injury during a World Cup qualifying match for Brazil.

The injury required surgery, sidelining him for the rest of the season and causing him to miss Al-Hilal’s title victory.

Now, Neymar is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as he works diligently towards full fitness. Recently filmed training on grass, he performed agility drills and sprints with noticeable ease.

With guidance from a personal trainer, his sessions indicate significant progress in his rehabilitation process, suggesting he could soon join his teammates in group training.

As Neymar approaches the end of his recovery, expectations are high for his return to the pitch.

Flamengo president Rodolfo Landim revealed that Neymar is expected to be match-ready by mid-September.

Having made just five appearances for Al-Hilal since his move from Paris Saint-Germain, Neymar will miss the start of the 2024-25 Saudi Pro League season.

However, he is anticipated to be a game-changer as Al-Hilal aims to fend off competition from Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr and retain the league championship.

    9 N’Golo Kante (Al Ittihad) €25m (£21m/$27m)
    10 Aymeric Laporte (Al Nassr) €24.5m (£21m/$27m)

The hefty salaries of these players highlight the Saudi Pro League’s ambition to become a leading destination for top football talent.

As the 2024-25 season begins, several other stars, including Casemiro, Ederson, Alisson Becker, and Kevin De Bruyne, are being linked to Saudi Arabia.

Neymar managed only five appearances for Al-Hilal in the 2023-24 season due to a severe ACL injury, earning an astounding €20 million per match.

However, as he nears a return, Neymar is eager to meet expectations and assist his team in defending the league title.
