Frankfurt Airport sees distractions after the discovery of WWII bomb

Construction workers at Frankfurt Airport discovered a phosphorus bomb from the Second World War, according to police.

The operator of Frankfurt Airport has issued a warning about potential flight disruptions due to the discovery of a World War II (WW2) bomb.

According to authorities cited by Germany’s DPA news agency, a highway has been closed and four runways are out of service in preparation for a controlled detonation scheduled for Friday evening.

Airport operator Fraport announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that these disruptions are expected to continue until 9 p.m. local time (1900 UTC/GMT).

“Check flight status before travelling to the airport and allow extra time for your journey. We also recommend you check in as early as possible for your flight,” the post on X said.

Biden apologizes to Zelenskyy for delays in aid, commends Ukraine’s military efforts

United States President Joe Biden has apologized to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for previous delays in Washington’s aid to Kyiv, emphasizing that the US will continue to support Ukraine.

The two leaders met on Friday in Paris during the D-Day anniversary celebrations, where President Biden announced a $225 million aid package to help rebuild Ukraine’s electric grid.

Biden emphasised that the US will continue to stand with Ukraine against the Russian invasion. “We’re still in – completely, thoroughly,” he said.

Washington has provided tens of billions of dollars to Kyiv to help fend off the Russian offensive that began in February 2022.

But earlier this year, funds available for the Biden administration to help Ukraine began to dwindle during an impasse in Congress to authorise new aid.

Some right-wing lawmakers have been sceptical of US support for Ukraine. Further complicating matters, legislators tried to link Ukraine aid to other issues, including assistance to Israel and domestic priorities.

After months of negotiations between the White House and congressional leaders, lawmakers passed a $61bn Ukraine funding bill in April that Biden signed into law.

The legislation also provided $14bn in military aid to Israel.

“I apologise for the weeks of not knowing what’s going on in terms of funding,” Biden told Zelenskyy, blaming “very conservative” members of Congress for holding up the funding bill.

  • UEFA files for a dismissal of Liverpool fans’ lawsuit over 2022 Champions League final

UEFA files for a dismissal of Liverpool fans’ lawsuit over 2022 Champions League final

European football’s governing body, UEFA, has requested England’s High Court to dismiss lawsuits initiated by over 1,000 Liverpool fans who attended the 2022 Champions League final in Paris.

The fans allege personal injuries resulting from the chaos outside the stadium.

The lawsuits against UEFA and UEFA Events, filed last year, stem from the disorder outside the Stade de France before the match, which was delayed for over 30 minutes.

Videos showed French police using tear gas on fans, who claimed mistreatment as they were directed into pens outside the stadium.

An independent review of the incidents outside the stadium concluded that UEFA bore responsibility for numerous near misses that nearly led to a disaster before the final, won 1-0 by Real Madrid.

While UEFA settled with a group of Liverpool fans in March, a separate case involving approximately 1,200 others is ongoing at the High Court.

During a preliminary hearing, UEFA’s legal team requested an adjournment of a forthcoming hearing, during which UEFA will seek the dismissal of the cases.

UEFA’s lawyer, Shaheed Fatima, said in court documents that the case could not continue because it would require the court “to make findings as to the lawfulness or unlawfulness… of the French state.”

Judge Edward Pepperall has ruled that the hearing regarding UEFA’s application to dismiss the cases will proceed on June 27.

Initially, UEFA attributed the chaos to the fans of the Merseyside club before issuing an apology following the release of an independent review last year.

Subsequently, UEFA established a refund scheme, but Real Madrid deemed it inadequate and refused to participate.

Additionally, UEFA initiated a series of measures for future finals, such as augmenting the number of security personnel and engaging fans in the planning and execution processes.

  • Wayne Rooney thinks Sir Alex Ferguson still remains greater than Pep

Wayne Rooney thinks Sir Alex Ferguson still remains greater than Pep

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes that his former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, maintains superiority over Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola in the realm of managerial greatness.

This season, Guardiola guided City to their fourth consecutive Premier League title, an accomplishment unmatched by Ferguson or any other team in English football history.

This extends Guardiola’s tally to six Premier League titles in his eight seasons with Manchester City.

Nevertheless, Guardiola’s achievement falls short of Ferguson’s record of 13 championships during his illustrious 26-year tenure at Manchester United.

“I think of course there are going to be arguments as to who is better, but I think people tend to just look at what Sir Alex did at Manchester United, and what he did at Aberdeen was incredible,” Rooney said in an interview with ESPN Brasil.

“And you’d ask the question: could Guardiola do that at a team like Aberdeen?

“There’s questions, there’s debate, and I think Guardiola for his era is of course the best and he’s changed the way football is played worldwide… but yeah for me, Sir Alex, what he achieved in the game is incredible.”

Before joining Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson achieved remarkable success with Aberdeen, winning three Scottish titles and disrupting the long-standing dominance of Celtic and Rangers.

Notably, he led Aberdeen to a memorable victory over Real Madrid in the 1983 European Cup Winners’ Cup final.

In contrast, Pep Guardiola has a 3-2 edge over Ferguson in Champions League titles, having won two with Barcelona and one last season as part of a treble with Manchester City.

Wayne Rooney, who played under Ferguson for nine years and became Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer, has expressed great respect for Guardiola. Earlier this year, Rooney even suggested he would be open to working as Guardiola’s assistant.

“If Pep Guardiola comes in and asks me to be his assistant, you’d walk there,” Rooney told the Stick to Football podcast.
“You see what [Mikel] Arteta is doing now [at Arsenal] and I strongly believe a lot of that is from learning what Guardiola was doing, and so it depends on what the situation is.

“For me, the best manager is Pep and you look at how he adapts — how they [City] are playing now is not the same as how they were playing four years ago.”

Since then, Rooney has returned to management, taking on the role of head coach for English Championship side Plymouth Argyle ahead of the upcoming season.

  • Vinicius Jr told he deserves Ballon d’Or already

Vinicius Jr told he deserves Ballon d’Or already

Brazilian legends Ronaldo Nazário and Rivaldo have expressed their belief that Vinícius Júnior has already achieved enough to be awarded this year’s Ballon d’Or after leading Real Madrid to LaLiga and Champions League titles this season.

Vinícius scored in Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final last weekend, securing the club’s 15th European Cup title and his second during his six-year tenure at the club.

Rivaldo stated that Vinícius needed to elevate his performance and increase his goal tally this season to win his first Ballon d’Or, the prestigious annual award presented by French magazine France Football to the world’s best player.

With Vinícius scoring 24 goals in 34 games across all competitions this season, Rivaldo believes he has accomplished this feat.

“He’s a very dedicated boy,” Rivaldo told ESPN Brasil. “He arrived at Real Madrid and went to Real Madrid B to learn. He played a few games and we could see that he still needed a bit of time to learn how to score.

And he learnt! He trained hard and dedicated himself. Today, you can see that he has a much easier time scoring.”

Vinícius could add to his trophy haul this season when he competes with Brazil at this summer’s Copa América, to be held in the United States. Although Rivaldo said it can only add to his track record this season.

“So Viní is a player to be congratulated. He deserves the Ballon d’Or. Of course, there’s nothing better for him than to secure the award once and for all than by winning the Copa America now, right?

Today he already deserves the award, but if he wins the Copa America, even better,” Rivaldo said.
    Ronaldo agreed.

“I think Viní already deserves it [the Ballon d’Or]. He’s had a spectacular Champions League, a spectacular La Liga, and he’s been evolving more and more,” Ronaldo said, standing alongside Rivaldo.

“I remember that I did his presentation the day he arrived at Real Madrid and I got on well with him. I talk to Viní a lot about football and certain details and, looking at everything that’s happened, it’s a fantastic development that he’s making.

“I think his time has come. He’s been extremely decisive this year for Real Madrid. For me, today he’s the best player in the world by far.”

Dortmund interested in securing Ian Maatsen permanently – Sources

Borussia Dortmund aim to sign Ian Maatsen permanently but are hesitant to meet Chelsea’s £35 million ($44.7m) valuation, sources told ESPN.

The 22-year-old, who joined Dortmund on loan in January, became a crucial part of Edin Terzic’s team, playing every minute of their seven Champions League knockout matches, which ended in a final defeat to Real Madrid at Wembley last weekend.

Before that game, Maatsen admitted publicly that his future was uncertain.

Sources informed ESPN that Dortmund is eager to keep the full-back in Germany after he made 24 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals.

Chelsea is looking to generate funds through outgoing transfers to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules and are open to letting several fringe players leave the club, including Maatsen, Romelu Lukaku, and Trevoh Chalobah.

However, sources told ESPN that Chelsea’s desire for a lucrative deal for Maatsen is a major obstacle.

Dortmund is reportedly preparing an initial offer significantly lower than Chelsea’s asking price, likely between £20m and £25m.

Any deal Chelsea wants to include in their 2023–24 accounting year must be completed by June 30. Dortmund is hopeful that this deadline could help them negotiate a lower transfer fee.

Nottingham Forest nears deal closure with Scotland striker Ché Adams

Nottingham Forest are reportedly close to securing the signing of Scotland striker Ché Adams, beating out competition from Wolves, according to a source who spoke to ESPN.

Adams is set to leave Southampton this summer, as his contract expires.

Last season, he netted 18 goals, including 16 in the Championship, helping Southampton secure their return to the Premier League by defeating Leeds United in the playoff final.

The 27-year-old is nearing an agreement to join Forest on a free transfer, despite strong interest from Wolves. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side managed to retain their Premier League status last season by finishing 17th, six points clear of relegation.

Forest also secured their survival despite a four-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Nottingham Forest nears deal closure with Scotland striker Ché Adams

Adams will add valuable top-flight experience to the City Ground, having spent four seasons in the Premier League with Southampton, where he scored 25 goals between 2019 and 2023 after a £15 million ($19m) move from Birmingham City. He also had a stint at Sheffield United.

Adams is set to represent Scotland at Euro 2024 this summer, having been named in Steve Clarke’s provisional squad. With injuries sidelining forwards Lyndon Dykes and Ben Doak, Adams is expected to play a crucial role in Germany.

Since making his international debut in 2021, Adams has scored six goals in 30 appearances for Scotland, including a goal in the recent 2-0 win over Gibraltar.

Scotland will kick off their Euro campaign against hosts Germany on June 14.

Court declares Arsenal fan guilty in headbutt case with Roy Keane

Arsenal fan Scott Law has been found guilty of assaulting Manchester United legend Roy Keane last September.

The incident occurred after Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium.

Law reportedly confronted Keane as the former player was on his way to conduct post-match analysis.

According to the BBC, the 43-year-old has been convicted of common assault, resulting in a three-year football ban and a fine of £650, plus a victim surcharge of £114.

Additionally, Law has been ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work.

Throughout the game, Law and Keane had engaged in ongoing ‘banter,’ as Law was seated near the Sky Sports studio. Law claimed that the altercation “turned more aggressive,” and when he went to use the restroom, he was confronted by Keane.

CCTV footage from the Emirates Stadium later surfaced, showing Keane elbowing Law in the face. However, the court determined that Keane’s action was in self-defense.

District Judge Angus Hamilton noted Keane’s reputation as an ‘aggressive’ player during his career but concluded that Keane appeared ‘calm and not agitated’ when leaving the studio.

The judge also pointed out inconsistencies in Law’s account, which had changed multiple times throughout the proceedings.

In an announcement made on behalf of Law outside of court, Charles Sherrard KC, the 43-year-old’s defence attorney, said [via The Guardian]: “I was found guilty by a judge who excluded me at times from my own trial.

The prosecution deprived me of key footage for my defence. I most definitely plan to appeal this conviction. I will not be making any further statements.”

A joke? Jack Grealish agrees to a ‘four-week loan’ to Ibia clubs after Euro 2024 snub

Jack Grealish’s absence from England’s Euro 2024 squad has sparked humorous speculation among fans, with many suggesting he could now pursue a “four-week loan deal” with clubs in Ibiza.

The Manchester City forward was among seven players omitted from Gareth Southgate’s final selection for the European Championship, having struggled for form during the 2023–24 campaign despite adding another Premier League title to his accolades at the Etihad Stadium.

With his summer now free from international duty in Germany, Grealish is anticipated to indulge in some downtime.

Known for his extravagant celebrations following trophy victories with City, the 28-year-old may choose to unwind in Ibiza, a destination he is familiar with.

There, he could potentially team up with club owner Wayne Lineker, brother of former England striker Gary Lineker, for some leisurely pursuits on the White Isle.

One social media account has gone full Fabrizio Romano mode and posted: “BREAKING NEWS. Jack Grealish agrees 4-week loan deal to Ocean Beach – HERE WE GO.”

Wayne’s response to the post was simply “great news,” while George Lineker, Gary’s son, reacted with a series of laughing emojis.

While Grealish is likely to include a break in his off-season plans, he will also be eager to silence his critics when the 2024–25 campaign kicks off in August.

  • Russia’s economy growing significantly; China is alleged to be helping

Russia’s economy growing significantly; China is alleged to be helping

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 not only ignited global condemnation but also prompted a series of sanctions aimed at undermining the Kremlin’s capacity to wage war against its neighbouring country.

These measures included freezing Russia’s assets abroad, isolating its economy from the global financial system, and directing sanctions specifically towards its energy exports.

I can remember Western officials and commentators describing the sanctions as “crippling,” “debilitating,” and “unprecedented.”

With adjectives like these filling the airwaves, the situation seemed clear.

There was surely no way that Russia’s economy would withstand the pressure.

Faced with the prospect of an economic collapse, the Kremlin would be forced to back down and withdraw its troops.

After twenty-seven months, the conflict persists. Surprisingly, Russia’s economy is not weak but rather flourishing.

The International Monetary Fund forecasts a growth rate of 3.2% for Russia this year, surpassing that of any advanced economy.

Despite being described as “debilitating,” sanctions have not led to shortages in Russian stores.

    Supermarket shelves remain well-stocked.

However, inflation is a concern, and some Western companies have withdrawn from the Russian market in response to the invasion of Ukraine, leading to certain products no longer being available for sale.

But many of their products still find their way into Russia through a variety of routes. If you look hard enough, you can still find American cola in Russian stores.

While CEOs from Europe and America may be less inclined to attend Russia’s annual showcase economic event, the organisers of this year’s St. Petersburg International Economic Forum assert that delegates from over 130 countries and territories are participating.

Despite the challenges posed by Western sanctions, the Russian economy has pivoted towards developing new markets in the East and the Global South.

Russian officials are keen to highlight that attempts to politically and economically isolate Russia have not yielded the desired results.

“It looks like the Russian economy managed to adjust to very unfavourable external conditions,” says Yevgeny Nadorshin, senior economist at PF Capital. ”Without any doubt, sanctions broke a lot in the mechanism of operation inside the economy. But a lot has been restored. Adaptation is happening.”

    Workaround

Does this mean that sanctions have failed?
“The big issue was our understanding of what sanctions can and cannot do,” says Elina Ribakova, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

“It’s not like flipping a switch and Russia disappears. What sanctions can do is throw a country off balance temporarily until it finds a way to work around the sanctions, until it finds alternative ways to get shipments or sell its oil.

We’re eactly in that space where Russia has found a workaround.”

Moscow has redirected its oil exports from Europe to China and India. In December 2022, G7 and EU leaders introduced a price cap plan aimed at limiting the revenue Russia earns from its oil exports by trying to keep it below $60 a barrel.

But Western experts concede that Russia has been able to circumvent this quite easily.

The story of the price cap highlights a dilemma for the US and its partners.

Recognising that Russia is one of the largest players on the global energy market, they have tried to keep Russian oil flowing to avoid hiking energy prices. The result of that is that Moscow is still making money.

“In a way, we refused to properly sanction Russian oil,” Elina Ribakova concludes. “This price cap is an attempt to have our cake and eat it.

The priorities are to allow Russian oil to enter the market and to reduce Russia’s revenue. And when these two priorities conflict, unfortunately, the first one wins.

This substantial revenue stream enables Russia to sustain its operations, including the ongoing conflict.”

Russia has emerged as China’s primary oil supplier, underscoring the significance of their economic relationship beyond energy exports. China has become a crucial lifeline for the Russian economy, with bilateral trade reaching a staggering $240 billion last year.

A stroll through the streets of St. Petersburg or Moscow reveals the profound impact of China on a Russia affected by sanctions.

Electronics stores are brimming with Chinese tablets, gadgets, and mobile phones, while Chinese car dealers have gained dominance in the local automotive market.

  • Nigeria projected to 50% spend more on fuel subsidies in 2024 – Documents

Nigeria projected to 50% spend more on fuel subsidies in 2024 – Documents

Nigeria is projected to spend 5.4 trillion naira ($3.7 billion) in 2024, which is 50% more than in 2023, to maintain fixed petrol prices.

Additionally, the country plans to borrow an extra 6.6 trillion naira to address budget shortfalls.

The document, titled “Accelerated Stabilisation and Advancement Plan” (ASAP), was developed by the finance ministry in collaboration with private sector executives and economists. Its objective is to tackle challenges associated with reforms aimed at fostering economic growth.

President Bola Tinubu implemented a significant reform last May by eliminating a popular but expensive petrol subsidy, which was hailed by investors as a landmark move to stimulate growth.

However, this led to a threefold increase in petrol prices, escalated transportation costs, and fueled inflation, prompting discontent among motorists.

Despite facing pressure from labor unions regarding the soaring cost of living resulting from his reforms, Tinubu has remained steadfast in his commitment not to reverse them.

Since July last year, petrol prices have remained fixed despite two currency devaluations. Nigeria’s reliance on petroleum product imports persists due to minimal production by state-owned refineries.

“At current rates, expenditure on fuel subsidy is projected to reach 5.4 trillion naira by the end of 2024. This compares unfavourably with 3.6 trillion naira in 2023 and 2.0 trillion naira in 2022,” the ministry said in the draft document.

Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu had received the draft on Tuesday, adding that it is still only a proposal containing suggestions on how to improve the Nigerian economy.

However, analysts suggest that if the president endorses the policy, he could initiate the implementation of its recommendations through executive orders. These recommendations encompass strategies for the power, oil and gas, agriculture, and healthcare sectors, with provisions for business support.

Nigeria’s economy has been experiencing sluggish growth, hovering around 3%, which falls significantly short of the 6% annual expansion envisioned by Tinubu upon assuming office last year.

Outlined in the policy document are proposals from the ministry, including the sale of equity in refineries by May 2026, an increase in excise duty on beverages, and the introduction of taxes on single-use plastics and sweetened beverages to generate revenue.

Additionally, the document outlines the government’s objective to achieve oil production of approximately 2 million barrels per day by December, a substantial increase from the current 1.4 million barrels, aimed at bolstering cash flow and bridging revenue shortfalls.

These comments follow a recent social media post that alleged Mr. Otchere-Darko was the new owner of ChannelOne TV.

In his debut appearance on the station since its name change, the lawyer described it as a crazy

Ghana’s forest cover sees a 30% decline in 20 years – Minister of Environment

Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), Ophelia Mensah Hayford, has disclosed that Ghana has witnessed a staggering 30% reduction in its forest cover over the last two decades due to agricultural expansion, logging, and mining activities.

In her capacity as both Minister and Member of Parliament for Mfantsiman, Madam Mensah Hayford underscored the adverse consequences of this significant loss, including soil erosion, nutrient depletion, and diminished water retention capacity.

Of particular concern are the Upper East and Upper West Regions, which have borne the brunt of environmental degradation owing to extensive deforestation.

These remarks were delivered during the Environmental Protection Agency’s commemoration of World Environment Day in Accra.

“Regular drought now has a disastrous impact on agriculture, water supply and food security, especially in the Northern Regions. Crop yields have decreased, and drought susceptibility has grown,” she said.

The event featured an exhibition to commemorate the day, which was celebrated under the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.”

Ghana’s specific theme for the day was “Desertification and Drought Resilience – Journey to a Greener Future,” reflecting the nation’s focus on combating desertification and enhancing drought resilience.

The purpose of the event was to raise awareness and foster initiatives aimed at cultivating a sustainable and eco-friendly future for Ghana.

Over 1,000 pieces of hips, butt enlargement products destroyed at Asante Akyem

In partnership with the Municipal Assembly, the Asante Akyem North Health Directorate has taken action to eliminate more than 1,000 unapproved products for penis and buttocks enlargement in Asante Akyem Agogo.

This decisive step is part of a broader strategy to combat the illegal trade of such substances and safeguard public health.

Municipal Health Director Roland Miah, in conversation with Adom News correspondent Isaac Amoako, clarified that the confiscated items included body enhancement products, Viagra, and various concoctions often misused, particularly by youth, with detrimental effects.

Highlighting the aim of the operation, Miah emphasised the enforcement of regulations prohibiting illegal drugs, herbal medicines, cosmetics, medical devices, and household chemical substances.

He also urged the public, especially young people, to steer clear of these harmful products due to their severe side effects.

Assuring continuity, Municipal Chief Executive Francis Oti Boateng stressed that this initiative is part of an ongoing campaign rather than a one-time effort.

He outlined plans for a dedicated task force to consistently monitor and enforce regulations, with a commitment to prosecute individuals involved in the illegal sale of drugs.

Ambulance case: I see no reason why the AG has to recuse himself – Kweku Paintsil

A private legal practitioner has expressed disagreement with the advice given by High Court Judge Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, suggesting that Attorney General (AG) Godfred Dame should recuse himself from the ongoing ambulance procurement case.

During an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, June 6, Kweku Paintsil argued that there is no valid reason for the Attorney General to step down from the case.

He stated, “An advice is an advice; you can take it or leave it. I don’t personally, with due respect, see any justification for the Attorney General to recuse himself from the case.”

The lawyer’s comment comes after a sitting High Court Judge on Thursday advised the Attorney General to recuse himself from the ambulance procurement case involving Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa, citing allegations of professional and prosecutorial misconduct.

But Mr Paintsil explained that the specific allegation made against the AG was dismissed by the judge, adding, “I am not too sure that it is going to have any impact on the substantive trial.

Even if there is any such allegation that can be proven, it does not hold the substance of the matter before the judge. It is an issue of the conduct of the Attorney General which may be tried in a different forum.”

According to Mr. Paintsil, if the judge has sufficient reasons to recuse the AG, she has the authority to do so. However, he noted that in this case, the judge does not have good reasons, hence the advice.

Consequently, he believes the AG is not obliged to accept advice from a sitting judge.

Nevertheless, he mentioned that if the AG decides to take the advice, that would be acceptable.

  • GAWU blames hike in vegetables prices on ‘galamsey’

GAWU blames hike in vegetables prices on ‘galamsey’

General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) has attributed the alarming shortage of vegetables and subsequent price hikes in Ghana to illegal mining activities.

Mr. Edward Kareweh, GAWU’s General Secretary, pointed out that the very areas crucial for vegetable cultivation are often hotspots for illegal mining, making it exceedingly challenging for farmers to grow crops.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Kareweh emphasized that while natural factors like seasonal changes play a role, certain policies within the agricultural sector exacerbate the problem, impeding food production.

He highlighted the adverse effects of illegal mining, including soil erosion, water contamination, land degradation, heavy metal pollution, and soil infertility. Kareweh cautioned that without proper intervention, the situation would deteriorate further.

Furthermore, Kareweh stressed that the impacts of illegal mining extend beyond environmental concerns, affecting communities and the country’s economy.

He urged policymakers to prioritize sustainable mining practices to mitigate food insecurity and safeguard the environment.

“Vegetables are delicate crops; you need clean water to grow vegetables, but you don’t necessarily need clean water to grow cocoa or oil palm because the water that runs under it must not necessarily be the one that we can drink,” he said.

He said the water needed for vegetable production should almost be equivalent to drinking water; however, the activities of people engaged in galamsey had destroyed most of the farms, and those surviving fell into danger during the rainy season when floods flowed into the vegetable farms.

Mr Kareweh said in addition to galamsey, there were also some policies that worsened the situation instead of addressing the gaps that had been created by nature.

“Tomatoes generally should not be in abundance like they were in January and February, but you have to look at the marginal increase. That is why, at this time, as opposed to previously, every market day the price goes up and becomes far more costly than before, and that is what we need to investigate,” Mr Kareweh said.

He lamented the high cost of products, land preparation, and pesticides, among others, which are critical to vegetable production and negatively affect development in the agricultural sector of the country.

Jordan Ayew came off the bench to score a dramatic winner for Ghana, leading them to a 2-1 victory over Mali in Bamako on Thursday evening.

This crucial win places the Black Stars joint-top of Group I in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, marking their first win in six games.

The match saw Mali take the initial lead just before halftime.

Kamory Doumbia capitalised on a deflection off Alexander Djiku, putting the Eagles ahead.

Despite Mali’s strong start and early efforts, including notable saves by Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Ghana gradually found their footing.

Ghana’s equalizer came in the 58th minute when Ernest Nuamah headed in a brilliant cross from Salis Abdul Samed.

The game continued with intense efforts from both sides, with Thomas Partey almost securing a win for Ghana before added time, only to be thwarted by Mali’s goalkeeper.

In the dying moments of the match, Jordan Ayew delivered the decisive goal, firing past the Malian defence to secure all three points for the Black Stars.

This victory brings Ghana to six points from three games, trailing behind Comoros only on goal difference.

The Black Stars will next face the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium on the fourth matchday of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.

According to Samuel Avaala, President of the Oil Palm Development Association of Ghana (OPDAG), the deal is not expected to result in job losses for existing GOPDC employees, although there may be changes in the company’s direction and management.

Currently a subsidiary of Societe d’Investissement pour l’Agriculture Tropicale (Siat) SA, a key shareholder in Presco, GOPDC’s operations mirror those of Presco.

Both companies are involved in the cultivation of oil palm and the extraction of crude palm oil and palm kernel oil, as well as the production of refined oil products.

GOPDC operates from two estates in the Eastern Region of Ghana – the Kwae Estate and Okumaning Estate, encompassing about 21,000 hectares of oil palm plantations, with 13,000 hectares already developed.

The company has significant processing facilities, including a 60 metric tonnes per hour fresh fruit palm oil mill, a 100 metric tonnes per day refinery, a 60 metric tonnes per day palm kernel mill, a fractionation plant, and a palm kernel cake pellet plant.

Its annual production capacity is 35,000 metric tonnes of palm oil and palm kernel oil, and it has a storage capacity of 21,000 metric tonnes.

The company, which produces red palm oil and vegetable oil under the ‘King’s’ brand, employs approximately 30,000 workers during peak harvest season.

For the year ending December 31, 2023, GOPDC reported a net revenue of US$30.6 million, a gross profit of US$18.1 million, and an operating profit of US$12.6 million, achieving an operating margin of 41.2%.

Forecasts suggest GOPDC’s revenue will reach US$80.95 million by 2028, with a slight decrease in the operating margin to 39.7%. Presco expects the acquisition to increase its market share, customer base, and plantation size by 19%, from 43,457 to 51,760 hectares.

The deal is also anticipated to strengthen Presco’s competitive position and optimise resource utilization, potentially increasing the company’s market value on the Nigerian Stock Exchange and facilitating future access to capital.

GOPDC, established by the Government of Ghana in 1975, is a leading oil palm plantation and processing company, although the current percentage of government ownership is unknown.

Full text: 39-page ruling that dismissed Ato Forson’s application for a mistrial

An Accra High Court has dismissed an application for mistrial in the ambulance trial.

On Thursday, June 6, 2024, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, presiding over the ambulance trial, ruled that the application filed by former Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson was not tenable.

Dr. Ato Forson and co-accused Richard Jakpa had alleged professional and prosecutorial misconduct on the part of Attorney-General Godfred Dame.

Their application referenced a tape in which Dame and Jakpa were purportedly discussing matters before the courts.

However, the judge found no statutory basis to declare a mistrial or to investigate the Attorney-General’s conduct.

“In our body of laws, as far as the legislation or case law is concerned, there is no provision for the court to declare a mistrial on the basis of the alleged misconduct of a lawyer, either for the prosecution or the defence,” portions of the 39-page judgement read.

The court also declined jurisdiction to order an inquiry into the Attorney-General’s conduct, directing Dr. Ato Forson to seek redress from the General Legal Council if he wished to pursue the matter further.

The trial judge advised the Attorney-General to stay away from the trial, citing the leaked audio tape and its contents, which raised concerns about Dame’s interaction with Jakpa.

Despite these concerns, the judge ruled that they did not constitute grounds to halt the case.

In response, the Attorney-General has stated that while he acknowledges the judge’s advice regarding the case, he does not intend to recuse himself, expressing his commitment to prosecute the matter to its conclusion.

The office of the Ga Mantse has announced a historic visit by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, scheduled for Sunday, June 9, 2024.

This visit marks the first time an Asante monarch will officially visit the Ga state, signifying a strengthening of ties between the Ga and Asante peoples.

During a press briefing at the Ga Mantse’s Palace on Thursday, June 6, Nii Boi Abbey, head of the planning committee for the visit, outlined the plans for the event.

He revealed that the highlight of the day would be a grand durbar hosted by Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Mantse, at the palace’s forecourt in Kaneshie, Accra, starting at 11 am.

This visit comes in the wake of the Ga Mantse’s participation in the 25th-anniversary celebrations of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

It aims to reinvigorate the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the Ga and Asante communities, which have a rich history of exchange in governance, cultural practices, and traditions.

Nii Abbey emphasised the significance of this event in celebrating and renewing the cultural and historical ties that bind the Ashantis and the Gas.

Head of Thy Church Triumphant – AG’s victory song after court hearing

Attorney-General (AG) Godfred Dame walked out of the courtroom in high spirits after a proceeding in the ongoing ambulance case trial.

This comes after about five applications filed by the first accused person and the third accused, Dr. Ato Forson and businessman Richard Jakpa, respectively, were thrashed by the court.

The applications are an order of inquiry into the conduct of the Attorney-General following the allegations made by Richard Jakpa to the effect that the A-G has been calling him at odd hours; an order of mistrial with the aim of terminating the case; a stay of proceedings until the application is determined; and a motion asking the court to strike out charges against the businessman.

However, the court asserted that the GLC is the appropriate body to address the conduct of the Attorney General.

In reaction to this, the AG asked how he anticipated the outcome of the case, and he began to sing a hymn titled Head of Thy Church Triumphant by Charles Wesley, which was a sign of his victory over his opponent and a vindication from all accusations levelled against him.

    “We joyfully adore Thee;
Till Thou appear, Thy members here
Shall sing like those in glory:
We lift our hearts and voices…..” he sang.

Adding that “the most important point in court today is that all the applications filed by the applicants have been dismissed in their entirety, all five applications have failed.

And I think in reaction to this , it clearly shows that a group of people in this country who ride on the manipulation of facts, distortion and deception of the public, only seeking to mislead and deceive the public, have been exposed today.

Fenerbahce to pay Jose Mourinho over 10m dollars annually

Fenerbahce has announced that their new head coach, Jose Mourinho, will earn €10.5 million ($11.4 million) annually under a two-year contract.

The Turkish club disclosed these figures in a statement to the stock market on Wednesday, just three days after presenting Mourinho to thousands of fans at their stadium. The announcement did not specify any bonus details in Mourinho’s contract.

Mourinho’s primary goal is to lead Fenerbahce to a Turkish league title, which the club hasn’t won since 2014.

The team narrowly missed out on the championship last month, losing to their fierce rivals, Galatasaray.

Fenerbahce will also begin their Champions League campaign in the early qualifying rounds in July.

This marks Mourinho’s first coaching stint outside of Europe’s top five leagues since 2004, when he left Porto, after winning the Champions League, to join Chelsea under then-owner Roman Abramovich.

Since then, Mourinho has managed several top clubs, including Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Tottenham, amassing numerous trophies and stirring off-field controversies.

Meanwhile, another Istanbul-based club, Besiktas, announced on Wednesday that Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be their new head coach.

The Dutch coach has signed a two-year contract with an option for a third season, according to a statement on the Besiktas website.

Van Bronckhorst’s last managerial role was with Rangers, where he led the Scottish team to the Europa League final in the 2021–22 season.

102 WW2 veteran dies during trip to D-Day event

World War Two (WW2) US Navy veteran, Robert “Al” Persichitti from Rochester, New York, passed away while en route to France for an event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, a veteran organization has confirmed.

Mr. Persichitti, aged 102, experienced a medical emergency aboard a ship traveling to Europe and was airlifted to a hospital in Germany on May 30. He died the following day.

Remembered as a “great, humble man,” Mr Persichitti was involved in the allied operation in Japan.

Honor Flight, a veteran organisation Mr Persichitti belonged to – confirmed his death on social media and said he had “served his country bravely without hesitation”.

The non-profit helps transport former US servicemen to the memorials of the respective wars they fought in.

The 102-year-old was selected to attend the event in Normandy by the National World War Two Museum in New Orleans, which paid for and organised the trip, a local affiliate of CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, reported.

“I’m really excited to be going”, he told broadcaster WROC-TV a day before he set off.
His cardiologist had encouraged him to travel, he added.

Al DeCarlo, who served alongside Mr Persichitti in Japan, was also on the trip. He told local media in Rochester that his friend did not die alone.

“The doctor was with him… he was at peace and he was comfortable,” he said, according to ABC news agency affiliate, WHAM-TV.
“She put his favourite singer, Frank Sinatra, on her phone and he peacefully left us.”

Mr. Persichitti and his comrade served together on Iwo Jima, a Japanese island captured by the US from Japan’s imperial army in 1945. Pastor William Leone, a friend of 46 years, shared with WHAM-TV that Mr. Persichitti “had a real zest for living” and often visited local schools to share his wartime experiences with children.

Beyond his military service, Mr. Persichitti was a former teacher. In April, students from a local school organized a birthday celebration in his honor. In 2020, he was recognized as an honoree in the New York State Senate’s Veteran Hall of Fame by then-Senator Rich Funke.

His local Honor Flight chapter in Rochester expressed that they will greatly miss him.

  • Amnesty International calls for human rights assurances at World Cups

Amnesty International calls for human rights assurances at World Cups

Amnesty International has urged FIFA and the countries bidding to host the 2030 and 2034 World Cups to commit to binding agreements and legal reforms to prevent human rights violations related to the tournament.

In October, FIFA awarded the 2030 World Cup to Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, while Saudi Arabia remains the sole bidder for the 2034 edition.

Amnesty International emphasised that there are “serious human rights” risks that must be addressed in connection with these events.

“FIFA should ensure a rigorous and transparent bidding process based on meaningful stakeholder participation, including genuinely independent human rights risk assessments and comprehensive human rights strategies,” human rights organisation Amnesty said.

“FIFA should be prepared not to award the rights to host the World Cup until such agreements are made and until it is clear that human rights violations can and will be prevented, mitigated and remedied.”

Amnesty said the commitments must prevent human rights violations in relation to “labour rights, discrimination, housing, freedom of expression, policing and privacy” before finalising a decision to approve any bid.

FIFA included human rights standards as part of the bidding requirements for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups. However, Amnesty International is concerned that single bids for each tournament reduce FIFA’s leverage to ensure these standards are met.

The football governing body set a July deadline for submitting bids for the 2034 World Cup, which will be evaluated later this year. The host nation will be officially announced in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Amnesty International raised concerns about the high accident rates at construction projects in Spain and Portugal, which exceed EU levels.

They also highlighted ongoing discrimination in Spanish stadiums, citing the racism faced by Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr.

Additionally, Amnesty called for Morocco and Portugal to increase their number of labor inspectors by over 50% to meet International Labour Organisation (ILO) benchmarks.

Amnesty has shared its report with FIFA. Reuters has reached out to FIFA and the football associations of the countries bidding for the World Cup for comment.

Risks associated with hosting the 2034 tournament in Saudi Arabia are of a “different magnitude and severity” that will test FIFA’s commitment to its human rights policies, Amnesty said.

Amnesty researcher Dana Ahmed said that although they were allowed to do research on migrant workers in Qatar, which hosted the 2022 World Cup, leading to several reforms, they have not had any access in Saudi Arabia.

“It is extremely difficult to do research from the outside,” she told reporters.

On Wednesday, a global coalition of trade unions lodged a complaint against Saudi Arabia with a UN-backed labor organization.

The complaint, filed by Building and Wood Workers’ International, calls on the International Labor Organization to investigate Saudi Arabia for “severe human rights abuses and wage theft.”

According to the union group, these violations have impacted at least 21,000 workers over the past decade.

“The complaint emphasises the exploitative living and working conditions among the country’s vast migrant workforce — conditions that BWI notes are akin to forced labour,” the global group of trade unions said in a statement.

The BWI cited allegations of illegal recruitment fees demanded, wages and passports withheld, limits on workers leaving jobs, plus physical and sexual violence “particularly against female and domestic workers.”

Reuters has contacted the Saudi Ministry of Sport for comment.

Circle: Regional minister issues no-habitation, rebuilding directive at fire gutted area

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover, has issued a stern warning against the rebuilding and reoccupation of the fire-ravaged sections of ECOMOG at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

His statement follows a second fire outbreak in the area in two years, which occurred on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

The blaze, which began around 5:00 PM, destroyed wooden structures near the railway line.

During a site inspection of the affected area, the minister emphasised the need to prevent a third fire and ensure residents’ safety.

Consequently, he has directed that no rebuilding or reoccupation of the site will be allowed.

During a media engagement, Mr Glover stated that “its unfortunate they are living under these circumstances, but I have instructed that nobody should live here anymore, nobody and we mean it.

As a regional minister, it is our duty to protect every life and property. We don’t want any third fire, and we don’t want anyone living here; they should prepare and leave.”

He threatened apprehension and a lawsuit against anyone who made any attempt to defy these orders.

“We will make sure we put men on the ground to make sure nobody leaves here. I mean my words and anybody who rebuilds will be arrested and taken to court,” he added.

Meanwhile, the affected residents have called on the government to come to their aid.

  • Lukaku ready for Saudi move a year after Al Hilal snub – Sources

Lukaku ready for Saudi move a year after Al Hilal snub – Sources

Romelu Lukaku has expressed openness to playing in Saudi Arabia, a year after rejecting a move to Al Hilal.

The 31-year-old striker’s future remains uncertain, as sources informed ESPN that Chelsea aims to secure a permanent transfer for Lukaku after loaning him to Inter Milan and Roma over the past two seasons.

Lukaku, who earns approximately £325,000 a week ($415,419) at Stamford Bridge, is a significant financial burden for Chelsea, who are eager to offload his salary to fund new signings.

With two years left on his Chelsea contract, the club is reluctant to approve another loan move, seeking instead to recoup part of the £97.5 million they paid Inter Milan in 2021.

Last summer, Chelsea accepted an offer for Lukaku to join Al Hilal, but the striker turned it down. Now, Lukaku views the Saudi Pro League more favourably, especially with the influx of high-profile players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Karim Benzema.

Asked why he hesitated last summer, Lukaku told HLN: “Because everyone only went to Saudi Arabia after I could sign there, I was scared for a while.

    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/zwrS1-1WZvY

“[Now] Saudi Arabia would not stop me. The level there will only rise to a much higher level than many people think. More and more footballers will tend to play there.

“Also because of how the fans there experience football. The infrastructure still needs to improve, but all the big top European clubs know: ‘Saudi Arabia is coming.’ You already see that in boxing, golf, and Formula 1.”

Speaking about the possibility of a move this summer, Lukaku continued: “A lot of people like to talk, maybe because I don’t have an agent. But I’m going to decide. I control my situation myself.

“I am going to make a choice and once I will explain it, everyone is going to agree with me. Look, every time I decided to stay or leave somewhere, it turned out to be the right choice because of certain factors—for example, my rapport with the coach,” Lukaku said. “It’s like a relationship with a woman. If it doesn’t click anymore, why stay together?”

Lukaku also reiterated that he would like to end his career back in Belgium with Anderlecht, the club where he turned professional in 2006.

“It will happen,” he said. “And much earlier than many people think. I left Belgium when I was 18.”

  • Kevin De Bruyne marks 100 caps in goal during Belgium-Montenegro friendlies

Kevin De Bruyne marks 100 caps in goal during Belgium-Montenegro friendlies

Kevin De Bruyne delivered an outstanding performance in his 100th international appearance as Belgium comfortably defeated Montenegro in a warm-up friendly for Euro 2024.

Right from the start in Brussels, the European giants took control of the game.

Their attacking trio of Yanick Carrasco, De Bruyne, and Lois Openda repeatedly breached Montenegro’s defense, creating numerous scoring opportunities.

Despite the relentless Belgian attacks, goalkeeper Matija Sarkic made several impressive saves, denying Carrasco and De Bruyne in the opening 15 minutes.

However, Belgium’s persistence paid off just before halftime when Openda pressured Sarkic into a mistake, allowing De Bruyne to calmly slot the ball into an empty net, giving Belgium the lead.

Domenico Tedesco made significant changes at halftime, introducing Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard and Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku. Both players displayed directness, frequently combining on the left flank to challenge Montenegro’s defense.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC7ipa1r-Uo

Their efforts paid off in stoppage time when Doku was fouled in the box, allowing the Gunners’ forward to secure a comfortable victory by doubling the lead.

Kevin De Bruyne, despite playing for only 45 minutes, emerged as the standout performer.

The Manchester City midfielder showcased his indispensability to Belgium, orchestrating attacks from an advanced midfield position.

Despite the struggles of strikers Openda and Carrasco, De Bruyne consistently provided opportunities to unlock Montenegro’s defence, culminating in a composed finish to break the deadlock.

Openda may feel disappointed with his performance, failing to convert several scoring chances.

Given the chance to stake his claim ahead of Romelu Lukaku, who was absent from the matchday squad, Openda failed to make a compelling case for inclusion in Euro 2024.

Belgium’s preparations continue with a friendly against Luxembourg on June 8 before they embark on their Euro 2024 campaign in Germany.

They will face Slovakia in their opening match on June 17 at The Waldstadion in Frankfurt.

Emi Martinez eager to ‘fight’ club to be a part of Olympic squad 2024

Emi Martinez is ready for a “fight” at Aston Villa, with the World Cup winner reiterating his desire to represent Argentina at the 2024 Olympics.

The enigmatic goalkeeper is already part of his country’s plans for the Copa America, as they seek to defend that continental crown, but has previously told Ole of also turning out at international Games in Paris: “As many players have said, if Javier [Mascherano] is available and wants us, we are available.

Obviously, the national team comes before the clubs and if the clubs let us, we always have the power to say that the national team is always ahead.

And for us, it is a source of pride. I want to go. There are a lot of guys who want to go.”
Mascherano has named a 23-man squad for Olympic warm-up matches but has yet to add overage players to that list.

Martinez could be called upon despite the Copa America final being just 10 days prior to the event in France getting underway and the new Premier League season starting a week after the tournament finishes.

Martinez has now told TyC Sports about battling for the right to form part of Argentina’s plans: “I’ve had the possibility to speak with Marche (Mascherano); it is a wish that I want to play, but it doesn’t obviously just depend on myself.

The club has blocked me from going lots of times before but I want to play the Copa America and to have a little bit more strength at the end of the Copa America to make a decision.

I know that I have to fight a little bit more with the club; it’s not 100 percent done but from my part, it is a wish that I have that I want to win the Olympics.

It’s not obligatory for the club to let a player leave to play in the Olympics, I know that my club has not let any player go, they blocked everyone.

A small chance, but I always put the national team in front and if I have to fight a little more with the club, I will, but first is the Copa America.

It’s very difficult to fight with the club now because for us, the most important thing is to win the Copa America. Then comes the Olympics, and it is a personal wish of mine to win the trophy.”

Villa, who will be gracing the Champions League in 2023-24 after securing a top-four finish in the Premier League, have already blocked France coach Thierry Henry from selecting Lucas Digne and Moussa Diaby in his squad for a gold medal bid on home

Wife of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, Natalia Becker, has refuted claims of her arrest in connection with the death of a man in Brazil.

The partner of the Reds’ No. 1 finds herself embroiled in a situation unrelated to her.

Reports indicate that a man in South America passed away due to medical complications following a chemical skin peel.

While it’s been alleged that a woman named Natalia Becker was detained and questioned in relation to the incident, it’s important to note that Alisson’s wife is a paediatrician, specialising in children’s healthcare.

In response, she has taken to social media to address her 350,000 followers, seeking to clarify any misunderstanding.

Natalia has said: “I’m not the ‘Natalia Becker’ on the aesthetic clinic news. It’s someone else with the same first and last name. Nothing related.”

Having moved to end any uncertainty there, Alisson is free to focus his full attention on the upcoming Copa America, with the Liverpool star named alongside the likes of Vinicius Junior and Endrick in Brazil’s squad for a major international tournament in the United States.

  • CDD’s Asiedu Sarpong vows never to invest in Ghana again following DDEP impact

CDD’s Asiedu Sarpong vows never to invest in Ghana again following DDEP impact

Member of Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) and a pharmacist, has voiced the impact of the government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP) on his investments in the country.

In a bid to build capacity to service the country’s overwhelming debt the former Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta launched a Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

At the launch of the program, Ken Ofori Atta said the objective of the Programme is “to invite holders of domestic debt to voluntarily exchange approximately GH¢137 billion of the domestic notes and bonds of the Republic, including E.S.L.A. and Daakye bonds, for a package of New Bonds to be issued by the Republic.”

He also promised that there will be no haircut on the principal of bonds and Treasury Bills, against rumours of potential loss of investments by investors.

However, in a turnaround of events, Dr. Sarpong mentioned that the DDEP led to a significant loss of £19,000 for him.

“At the time I made the investment, £1 was just around 8-9 cedis, but when the restructuring occurred, and I lost the money, the pound was trading at GHS14.8, resulting in a £19,000 loss.

I invested £41,000 and lost more than £19,000. I received £22,000, which is 54% of my initial £41,000 investment” he cried out.

Consequently, Dr. Asiedu Sarpong vowed not to invest in Ghana again.

“With my experience and loss of money, I won’t invest in Ghana again,” he emphasised.

Criticism of Economic Management and Political Leadership

Dr. Asiedu Sarpong also criticized the head of the Economic Management team and the Presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party, stating, “while our economy is in turmoil, the man in charge is searching for the steering wheel.”

More troubles for Cecilia Dapaah as CHRAJ is petitioned to launch investigation

Five people have submitted a petition to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), urging an investigation into former Minister for Sanitation, Cecilia Dapaah, over allegations of acquiring assets disproportionate to her income.

The petitioners include Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, Mensah Thompson, Al-Hassan Kwadwo Baidoo, Ransford Antwi, and Joyce Atitso.

Madam Dapaah attracted widespread media and public scrutiny following reports of a burglary at her residence involving significant sums of money and jewellery.

Stolen items included $1 million, €300,000, GH¢350,000, luxury handbags valued at $35,000, and jewellery worth $95,000.

Amidst the controversy surrounding the theft, Madam Dapaah resigned from her ministerial position in July 2023.

Subsequently, officers from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) arrested her after discovering over GH¢48 million in her accounts.

Following a collaborative investigation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) spanning almost seven months, the OSP dropped charges against her due to insufficient evidence and transferred the case to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

However, EOCO returned the docket to the OSP, citing a lack of evidence.

In their petition dated May 20, the petitioners have requested that CHRAJ conduct a thorough investigation into Madam Dapaah’s assets, including the $1 million, €300,000, and GH¢350,000 mentioned.

“…More importantly, we are fortified in the need for this investigation because, during interrogation by the OSP as to the source of her income, Madam Cecilia Dapaah could not give any proper explanation.”

  • Keep your profit in Ghana for economic dev’t – Asantehene to mining companies

Keep your profit in Ghana for economic dev’t – Asantehene to mining companies

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has urged mining companies to retain more of their profits within Ghana during the opening of the 2024 and 17th West African Mining and Power Conference and Exhibition.

He emphasised that this strategy would contribute to accelerating the country’s economic development, allowing Ghana to reap the benefits observed in other mining-rich nations like South Africa.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s remarks were delivered by Odeneho Okyere Kusi Ntrama, the Essumagyamanhene and Head of the Benkum Wing of the Ashanteman Council.

The three-day conference is on the theme “The Mining and Power Hub: Driving Sustainable Investment Opportunities in West Africa.”

The event is anticipated to draw 300 participants and 150 local exhibitors from 20 countries worldwide.

As the special guest of honour, the Asantehene stressed the importance of increased local involvement in the exploitation of Ghana’s mineral resources to retain more value within the country.

He encouraged mining and power companies to list on the Ghana Stock Exchange to promote local ownership.

Furthermore, the Asantehene emphasised the need for sustainable mining practices that respect the environment and local communities, including their cultural values.

He emphasised that investments in the sector should prioritise long-term national prosperity over immediate economic gains.

Additionally, the Asantehene advocated for the adoption of Artificial Intelligence and Technology in mining operations to align with the global transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

In his remarks, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, highlighted the vital role of the mining and power sectors in economic growth, particularly in job creation and revenue generation for national development.

He underscored the government’s commitment to promoting investment in exploration to discover new mineral reserves, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the mining industry.

Mr. Jinapor also mentioned ongoing efforts with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ghana Chamber of Mines to develop a framework for addressing critical tax issues such as Value-Added Tax (VAT) on exploration.

This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on exploration companies and encourage further investment in exploration activities.

“We are also in the process of enacting a Legislative Instrument, pursuant to Section 28 of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation Act, 2018 (Act 976), to restrict the export of bauxite in its raw state.

This will enable us to leverage our over nine hundred million metric tonnes (900,000,000 MT) of bauxite resources to build an integrated aluminium industry in-country,” he stated.

Dr. Sulemanu Koney, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, emphasised that the conference was timely in Ghana’s history.

Nigeria first lady gives clarity on her alleged ‘nakedness’ remarks about Meghan’s dressing

First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has clarified her recent remarks that were misconstrued as a critique of Meghan Markle’s wardrobe during her visit to the nation.

At the invitation of the Chief of Defence Staff, the country’s top military official, Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, were in Nigeria from May 10 to May 12.

The couple travelled overseas to support Harry’s Invictus Games, in which Nigeria participated for the first time in 2023, and to advocate for mental health programs for youth conducted by the Archewell Foundation.

First Lady Tinubu gained notoriety when Arise News’s video of her speaking on the struggles of Nigeria’s youth at an Abuja event called “Celebrating the Woman” went viral.

In her speech, she said, “We are not having the Met Gala . . . We don’t accept nakedness in our culture. It is not beautiful at all . . . They are mimicking and trying to emulate film stars from America.

They don’t know where they came from. Why did Meghan come here, looking for Africa? That is something we have to take home with us. We know who we are, and don’t lose who you are.”

Nevertheless, the First Lady’s office emphasised that Tinubu’s reference to the Duchess of Sussex was about Meghan’s journey to discover her identity and where she originated from after learning she is 43 percent Nigerian.

In a statement to AFP Fact Check, her office noted, “She meant Meghan appreciates the people we are, hence her coming here. At no point did she say anything about Meghan’s dressing.”

The clarification follows reports from multiple local and international media outlets suggesting that the speech criticised the tour attire of the Duchess of Sussex.

As reported by People magazine, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not have a public meeting with the Nigerian president or his spouse during their visit to the West African country.

  • CAF refutes claims of AFCON 2025’s potential postponement

Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rejected claims hinting at a possible delay of the highly anticipated AFCON 2025 set to be held in Morocco.

Dismissing these reports as “untrue,” CAF-affiliated media emphasised that the confederation’s executive committee will convene to discuss and determine the dates for AFCON 2025.

“CAF will thereafter issue an official statement on the matter,” CAF media wrote today on X, formerly Twitter.

Numerous media outlets, including Reuters, have reported today on the potential postponement of AFCON 2025.

The alleged delay is attributed to the rescheduling of the expanded 32-team Club World Cup.

In February, the Moroccan Royal Federation of Football (FRMF) confirmed that AFCON is slated to occur in the summer of 2025 in Morocco.

The announcement came after Morocco was officially designated as the host of the continental tournament in September of the previous year, following a unanimous vote by the Executive Committee board meeting held in Egypt.

During the same meeting, Kenya-Tanzania-Uganda were selected as the hosts for the 2027 AFCON.

Morocco’s bid victory underscores the nation’s commitment to hosting major football events, as it boasts robust football infrastructure that has garnered praise from officials of both CAF and FIFA.

Fouzi Lekaa, President of FRMF, pledged in December of the preceding year that Morocco would deliver the most exceptional AFCON in history.

Furthermore, in addition to AFCON 2025, Morocco is set to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal and Spain.

This significant project will be done by Ningxia Tianyuan Manganese Industry Group Company Limited, the parent company of Ghana Manganese Company (GMC).

The establishment of this refinery marks a major milestone for Ghana, as it will be the country’s first facility dedicated to refining manganese.

This development is expected to significantly increase the value of Ghana’s manganese resources, bolstering the country’s position in the global manganese market.

Mr. Jinapor made this announcement during the official opening of the 17th edition of the West African Mining and Power Conference and Exhibition (WAMPOC/WAMPEX) on Wednesday, June 5th, in Accra.

The event brought together industry leaders and stakeholders to discuss advancements and opportunities in the mining and power sectors across West Africa.

According to Mr. Jinapor, the refinery project underscores the government’s commitment to advancing the mining sector and leveraging natural resources for economic growth.

“And to ensure that Ghanaians, who are, by our national Constitution, the owners of our mineral resources, benefit fully from these resources, we are putting in place measures to promote beneficiation and value addition, as well as local content and local participation in the sector.”

“We have, therefore, through a public-private partnership, constructed a 400kg capacity gold refinery to refine the gold we produce, and work on a US$450 million manganese refinery will start in August,” he said.

President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Michael Edem Akafia, emphasised the effectiveness of events like WAMPOC/WAMPEX in facilitating business opportunities.

He noted that these events boast a 40% conversion rate for turning prospects into actual deals.

Your contributions are instrumental in creating a platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing and collaboration essential for advancement and growth. Please join me in thanking and applauding them.”

“I encourage all of you to actively participate in the sessions, engage in the networking discussions and seize the opportunities presented by this conference to contribute to the sustainable development of mining and power in West Africa.

Past participants can attest to the lasting benefits of previous WAMPOC/WAMPEX events,” Mr Akafia said.

  • Sale of SSNIT Hotels: Bawumia’s Senior advisor implicated in Ablakwa’s exposé

Sale of SSNIT Hotels: Bawumia’s Senior advisor implicated in Ablakwa’s exposé

North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has released another exposé concerning the proposed sale of four government-majority-owned hotels.

In recent weeks, Ablakwa has published documents supporting his claim that the planned sale of the majority shares of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to a company owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong is not in the state’s best interest.

According to Ablakwa, some documents reveal that the hotels in question were profitable, while the prospective buyer, Rock City Hotels Limited, was operating at a loss during the same period.

In his latest revelation, Ablakwa highlighted that a senior aide in the Vice President’s office serves as the board chairman of one of the hotels, La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.

He questioned the impartiality and advice this political appointee might offer in his role as board head.

“Prof. Kwaku Appiah-Adu is not only a senior advisor to Ghana’s vice president, Alhaji Bawumia, he is the current board chair of La Palm Royal Hotel.

“It would be interesting to know what his advice to the Vice President is as regards the infamous sale of SSNIT’s hotels to Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong,” Ablakwa’s post dated June 5, 2024, read in part.

His post continued with probing questions as to what Bawumia’s position was on the deal given the proximity of his close aide to the issue.

“How does Prof. Appiah-Adu also respond to claims from NPP propagandists and Majority Group Leader Afenyo-Markin that the current board and management of La Palm Royal Hotel are incompetent, inefficient and lack ideas, so in their opinion the sale to the extraordinarily competent and visionary Bryan Acheampong is justified?

“If what these NPP propagandists and Majority Group Leader have said about the current board and management of La Palm Royal is true, what does that say about the quality of advice he’s giving the Vice President at the expense of suffering taxpayers who pay him for that kind of advice?” the post concluded.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has tasked the Labour Minister to engage with organised labour who are demanding the planned sale to be halted.

  • Cement prices hit GH¢108 as manufacturers defy Trade Minister’s directive

Despite the ministerial directive to the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee in Ghana, cement prices continue to rise, causing significant disruption in the real estate industry and driving rents in Accra to unprecedented levels.

According to GBC Ghana Online, there has been a noticeable increase in cement prices from last week to this week, leaving many buyers puzzled.

In May 2024, cement prices ranged from GH¢85 to GH¢90, depending on the brand and mix ratio. However, as of June 4, 2024, prices have surged to approximately GH¢110, according to dealers in Pokuase.

One dealer reported that Dzata cement (42R) is now priced at GH¢108, Cimaf (42R) at GH¢107, Cimaf (32R) at GH¢87, and Ghacem leads the market with Ghacem (42R) at GH¢110.

Further inquiries revealed that Diamond cement is selling between GH¢75 and GH¢85, while Dangote cement is priced between GH¢92 and GH¢94.

Less than a month ago, Minister of Trade and Industry Kobina Tahir Hammond called for an immediate reversal of recent cement price hikes to alleviate the burden on Ghanaians.

However, it appears this directive has been ignored, possibly due to the underlying causes of the price increases being overlooked.

In a statement released on Tuesday, May 15, the Ministry instructed the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee (CMDC) to enforce the directive without exception.

The statement reiterated the Minister’s demand for the Committee to collaborate with cement companies to ensure uniform pricing nationwide.

The CMDC, established under the Ghana Standards Authority (Manufacture of Cement) Regulations, 2023 (LI 2480), regulates cement manufacturing in the country.

It is tasked with promoting the manufacturing, wholesale, and retail of cement and its components.

The Committee’s membership includes representatives from cement manufacturers, the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), the Environmental Protection Agency, the Ghana Institution of Engineers, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Youth Connect event in the Greater Accra Region faced a short interruption following a power cut.

The Vice President, while delivering his campaign speech to the teeming youth gathered at the GNAT Hall on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, experienced an interruption due to a cut in the power supply.

The immediate silence and darkness that plunged the hall was met with loud shouts from the youth.

Ghanaians, over the past few months, have been dealing with intermittent power supply, also known as ‘dumsor’. The government, however, has assured frantic efforts aimed at bringing the issue to an end.

Dr. Bawumia has been touring the country as part of his ongoing campaign for the 2024 presidential election.

His tour has seen him hold meetings with youth groups, traditional leaders, the clergy, and members of various organisations in various regions, promoting his campaign message and vision.

  • Antonio Conte named as Napoli’s new manager

Antonio Conte named as Napoli’s new manager

Napoli has appointed former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte as their new head coach, signing him on a three-year contract.

Conte, aged 54, has been out of management since departing from Tottenham by mutual agreement in March 2023, concluding a 16-month tenure.

Despite a less than stellar stint in north London, Conte boasts an illustrious coaching career. Notably, he secured the Premier League title in his debut season at Chelsea (2016-17) and clinched the FA Cup in his second season before his dismissal in 2018.

“Napoli is a place of global importance. I am happy and excited at the idea of sitting on the blue bench,” Conte said, who guided Inter Milan to their first Serie A title in 11 years back in 2021.

“I can certainly promise one thing, I will do my utmost for the growth of the team and the club. My commitment, together with that of my staff, will be total.”

Antonio Conte also led Juventus to an impressive three consecutive Serie A titles between 2011 and 2014.

Despite Napoli’s historic Serie A triumph last season, ending a 33-year drought, they have faced challenges in replicating that success, culminating in a disappointing tenth-place finish in the league.

Their struggles prompted the appointment of Slovakia manager Francesco Calzona on a temporary basis in February until the end of the season.

This move came after the dismissal of manager Walter Mazzarri, who held the position for just three months.

  • Crate of eggs to reach GHS 75 soon – Poultry Farmer warns

Crate of eggs to reach GHS 75 soon – Poultry Farmer warns

Chief Executive Officer of Joerees Farms & Foods, Mr. Joseph Boakye-Yiadom, has alerted consumers to an impending sharp increase in egg prices, citing soaring production costs as the primary driver.

In an interview with JoyNews on June 5, 2024, Boakye-Yiadom detailed the economic pressures facing the poultry industry.

“The Ghana poultry industry is in great distress at the moment. This increase is a result of our production input. For example, maize started this year in January, selling at between 190 and 200 cedis per 50 kg, but as I speak with you, it is between 260–270 cedis. Soybean meal started the year around 410–420, and now it’s about 520–530,” he stated.

To maintain operations, Boakye-Yiadom said farmers must adjust egg prices accordingly.

“All the input for poultry has increased drastically and for the poultry farmer to break even, we have to sell eggs at the farm gate between 55 and 65 cedis, so in the coming months Ghana should be ready to buy from their retailers at a price between 70 and 75 cedis,” Yiadom noted.

Current retail prices for eggs in Ghana range from GHS 10.55 to GHS 21.10 per kilogram, with wholesale prices hovering between GHS 48.00 to GHS 50.00 per crate from farm gates. The impending price adjustment represents a significant increase that could impact consumers nationwide.

“This is as a result of the coma that the poultry industry is in. Over the past two years, the Ghana poultry industry has suffered greatly and almost 60% of all the commercial poultry farms have collapsed, therefore there is the need for a revamp of the whole industry,” he added.

This announcement follows a broader trend of rising food prices in Ghana, exacerbated by ongoing economic challenges. The significant increase in the cost of maize and soybean meal, essential components of poultry feed, is a key factor contributing to the financial strain on the industry.

Economic analysts have noted that the broader inflationary pressures affecting various sectors in Ghana are also impacting the poultry industry. According to recent reports from the Ghana Statistical Service, food inflation has been a significant driver of overall inflation in the country, further complicating the financial landscape for both producers and consumers.

The government has been urged to address these issues to mitigate the impact on both the industry and consumers. In the meantime, Ghanaians are being advised to prepare for higher egg prices as the cost of production continues to rise.

  • Mbappe reveals what influenced his decision to leave PSG

Mbappe reveals what influenced his decision to leave PSG

French forward, Kylian Mbappe, has revealed that “things and people” contributed to his dissatisfaction during his last year at Paris St-Germain.

At 25 years old, Mbappe is set to embark on a new chapter with Real Madrid, signing a five-year contract once his tenure with Paris St-Germain concludes on June 30th.

The decision not to extend his Paris St-Germain contract for an additional year, made clear last August, sparked a standoff between Mbappe and the club.

This impasse led to Mbappe training separately from the first team as negotiations reached an impasse.

“At PSG I wasn’t unhappy, that would be biting the hand that feeds you and spitting in the face of all the people who defended me, but things and people made me unhappy,” said Mbappe on Tuesday.

“But there are things that you can’t show because I was a leader and you don’t follow someone who drags their sadness around.”

Mbappe said PSG boss Luis Enrique and adviser Luis Campos “saved me.”

“Without them, I would never have set foot on the field again,” he added on the eve of France’s friendly with Luxembourg in Metz.

“I’m more proud of that season when I know everything I had to go through to play.

“It was lower by my standards, but just playing, repeating matches and winning trophies was my greatest pride. But next year, I won’t be satisfied with a season like that.”

While Kylian Mbappe played a pivotal role in securing six Ligue 1 titles for PSG, he is now eagerly anticipating a new beginning with Real Madrid, the reigning champions of the UEFA Champions League.

“It’s a huge pleasure and a dream come true,” he added.

“It’s the club where I always dreamed of being. I’m going there with a lot of excitement and a lot of humility.”

Lebanese troops open fire on assailant firing at US embassy

Lebanese soldiers have apprehended a man who opened fire on the US embassy in Beirut on Wednesday, according to Lebanon’s military.

Local media reported that the assailant, identified only as a Syrian national, engaged in a gunfight with authorities for approximately 30 minutes before being captured.

The US embassy confirmed that security forces responded swiftly to the incident, ensuring that none of its staff members were harmed.

This event occurs amid escalating regional tensions, marked by cross-border attacks between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, a Lebanese group involved in the Gaza conflict.

The ongoing violence along the Israeli-Lebanese border has displaced thousands on both sides. During a visit to the border on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a warning of “very strong action” against Hezbollah.

The assailant shot by the Lebanese military was wearing a bloodied black vest with the words “Islamic State” written in Arabic and the English initials “I” and “S”, according to local media.

The reason behind the attack on the heavily fortified building remains shrouded in mystery. The Lebanese military has acknowledged only one individual involved, who sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.

However, there have been reports indicating the presence of multiple suspects, including a driver and three assailants who opened fire.

The office of Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has confirmed that the Prime Minister has been briefed on the incident. They assured that the situation is under control and investigations are ongoing.

The Lebanese military has deployed troops in and around the embassy premises as a precautionary measure.

This incident comes amid heightened tensions following the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Notably, the US embassy in Lebanon was relocated from central Beirut to Aukar, a northern suburb, after a devastating bombing in 1983 claimed the lives of 63 people.

In recent times, there have been protests around the embassy, reflecting public outrage over the escalating death toll in Gaza.

In October, clashes erupted between protesters and Lebanese security forces in the vicinity of the embassy.

Last Thursday, Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a payment intended to silence a pornographic actress who claims to have had a sexual encounter with him. The gag order, implemented on March 26, prohibited Trump from making public comments about witnesses, jurors, prosecutors, court staff, and their families.

Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove wrote in the letter to the judge that Trump should enjoy “unrestrained campaign advocacy”.

They say his case is “made even stronger” after his political opponent, US President Joe Biden, spoke publicly about the case.
They add that Trump is currently unable to defend himself against “continued public attacks” by witnesses for the prosecution, like his ex-lawyer Michael Cohen and the porn star, Stormy Daniels.

The letter also mentions that on June 27, Trump will take part in the first presidential debate against Joe Biden.
Judge Merchan will sentence Trump on July 11, which is four days before he is formally nominated by the Republican Party for president.

The judge has turned down his team’s several attempts in the past to have the gag order lifted.
Judge Merchan threatened to put Trump in jail if he continued to break the gag order and fined him $10,000 (£7,800) during the trial.

“The last thing I want to consider is jail,” Judge Merchan told him in court. “You are [the] former president and possibly the next president.”

“Your continued willful violation of the court’s order…constitutes a direct attack…and will not be allowed to continue,” he said. The order still permits Trump to criticise District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who brought the case against Trump, and Judge Merchan.

Prosecutors had argued that the gag order was needed to “protect the integrity of this criminal proceeding and avoid prejudice to the jury”.

On Friday, Trump told reporters that he believed the gag order should have expired at the conclusion of the trial, and that his lawyers were seeking clarity from Judge Merchan.

“I’m under a gag order, nasty gag order,” he said at Trump Tower after the verdict.
Referring to Cohen, a star witness for the prosecution, he said: “I’m not allowed to use his name because of the gag order.”
Also on Friday, Mr Biden referred to Trump as a “convicted felon”, telling reporters at the White House, “it’s literally driving him crazy.”

Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has bemoaned what she describes as consisent attacks from the IMANI President, Bright SImons.

This comes after Bright Simon’s reaction to the announcement of 5G internet in Ghana where he wrote an article titled “State Enchantment hijacks 5G in Ghana,”.

The article captures concerns about the government’s decision to award the country’s only 5G telecom license to a company called Next Gen Infraco Ltd. without a proper auction or tender, as is typically required by law following the Minister’s press conference on in the heat of controversy about the government’s decision to award the country’s only 5G telecom license to a shadowy entity called, Next Gen Infraco Ltd.

In reaction to this, the Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma West constituency bemoaned that the think-tank’s president always has something negative or degrading to say about anything that she is involved in.

While noting all his concerns she however, noted that ” I take this but with a pinch of salt” during an appearance on Peace FM’s Kokrookoo Morning Show on June 1, 2024.

“Bright Simons has never seen the good in anything I do. So I will take whatever he says. But if I had been in his position, I would have checked the results of the work that we ha done so far”.

She further went on to call on Mr Simons to check the results of the government’s works before offering his opinions.

“These results should inform him that we don’t just act lightly; we act on the basis of advice from solid experts in the sector. I accord him with so much respect, but making me aware that anything that comes from Ursula will attract negative comments from him I take this but with a pinch of salt” he added.
