PWDs urged to register with SLTF for “No-Fees-Stress” policy benefits

Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu has announced that persons with disabilities (PWDs) should endeavor to register with the Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) in order to benefit from the government’s “No-Free-Stress” policy .

While addressing a gathering of persons with special needs at the ministry on Monday, June 2, Hon. Iddrisu mentioned that the registration is imperative to ensure funds are successfully disbursed to applicants, reiterating President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to make higher education fully accessible to the disabled.

“We are collecting data on persons with disabilities from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and all tertiary institutions for the effective implementation of this policy,” the minister stated. “Your funding will come through the Student Loan Trust, so every person with a disability needs to register,” he stated.

The delegation from the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations, was led by their president, Mr. Joseph Atsu Homadzie. The Federation congratulated the minister on his appointment and discussed key concerns affecting persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the education sector.

Top on their agenda were access to tertiary education for PWDs, timelines for rolling out the Inclusive Education Policy, budgetary allocations for disability-friendly education, introduction of sign language in basic schools as promised by President John Dramani Mahama, and provision of assistive technology to enhance learning for PWDs.

On June 1, the sector minister joined students of the University for Development Studies for a special sensitization session on H.E. John Dramani Mahama’s bold and transformative #NoFeeStress initiative.

Joined by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Students Loan Trust Fund, Dr. Saajida Shiraz, the minister engaged with students on how the initiative is poised to benefit over 40,000 students nationwide—by removing the pressure of upfront tuition payments and providing more equitable access to tertiary education.

This impactful policy will allow students to pursue their education without financial stress, while the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) supports them through flexible repayment structures.

Launching the portal on April 29, the sector minister described the policy as a bold and strategic move by the government to improve access to tertiary education and invest in the country’s future workforce.

The SLTF has explained that the new system will make it easier for eligible students to register, submit their details, and be assessed for financial support. The portal is now live and can be accessed via https://www.nofeestress.sltf.gov.gh or https://www.sltf.gov.gh.

For additional assistance, students are encouraged to call 0302751020 or visit any SLTF zonal office across the country.

Meanwhile, the government has clarified that first-year public university students who have already paid their academic fees for the current academic year will not receive cash refunds. Instead, the government will apply the equivalent amount as credit toward the students’ second-year fees.

The “No-Fee Stress” initiative was a major campaign promise by then-presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama, who pledged to absorb academic fees for all Level 100 students within the first 120 days of his administration.

To support the rollout of the “No-Fee Stress” policy, GH¢499.8 million has been allocated under the 2025 national budget, which was presented to Parliament by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on Tuesday, March 11.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Navy, in collaboration with the Danish Government, has inaugurated a cutting-edge Maritime Simulation Centre at the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) in Nutekpor.

The ceremony, held on Monday, January 27, revealed the shared commitment to strengthening maritime security and operational capacity in the Gulf of Guinea.

The facility funded by the Danish government, which is named the Lill-May Didriksen Simulation Centre in honor of the first female officer in the Royal Danish Navy, boasts advanced technological features, including a 270-degree Full Mission Bridge Simulator, three 120-degree Part-Task Simulators, two Instructor Stations, briefing and server rooms, as well as offices for instructors.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Marietta Brew-Oppong, Legal Counsel to the President of Ghana and Guest of Honour, lauded Denmark’s longstanding support for Ghana’s maritime sector. She acknowledged Denmark’s instrumental role in combating piracy and maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea, which she described as a vital global trade corridor.

“Thanks to international efforts and partnerships like this, we have seen significant improvements in combating piracy and maritime crimes,” she remarked. Ms. Brew-Oppong expressed confidence that the facility would enhance maritime training and bolster the Ghana Navy’s capabilities.

The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, underscored the transformative potential of the centre, describing it as a “game-changer” for the Navy’s training programmes. He noted that the advanced simulation technology would allow personnel to master complex navigation and operational scenarios in a controlled environment, thereby improving readiness and safety.

“This project represents a leap forward in Ghana’s maritime domain,” Vice Admiral Yakubu stated, while also acknowledging Denmark’s steadfast support over the years.

He highlighted other Danish-backed initiatives, including the UNODC-supported “Ship-in-a-Box” facility for regional maritime training and the construction of a world-class swimming pool with diving capabilities for the Navy.

Adding his voice, the Deputy Chief of Navy of the Royal Danish Navy, Commodore BO Overgaard, reaffirmed Denmark’s commitment to addressing security challenges in the Gulf of Guinea. He emphasized the importance of partnerships in tackling issues such as piracy, illegal fishing, and armed robbery, which threaten trade and regional stability.

“The Bridge Simulator is an advanced piece of technology that reflects the trust and collaboration between our nations,” Commodore Overgaard stated, describing the project as a model for sustainable development that enhances safety and prosperity in Ghana and the region.

The facility also allows for effective training without taking operational ships out of service, a feature Commodore Overgaard described as key to improving efficiency and readiness.

Commodore Solomon Asiedu-Larbi, Flag Officer Commanding NAVTRAC, highlighted the Simulation Centre’s role in positioning NAVTRAC as a center of excellence for maritime training in Ghana and beyond. He credited years of meticulous planning and collaboration for bringing the project to fruition.

“This venture solidifies NAVTRAC’s reputation as a leader in maritime training, and we are deeply grateful to Denmark for their invaluable contribution and to the CNS for his visionary leadership,” he added.

The Maritime Simulation Centre is expected to significantly enhance Ghana’s maritime security efforts, ensuring operational readiness and contributing to the broader goal of securing the Gulf of Guinea’s critical trade routes.

Brazilian Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Mariana Madeira, said the exercise would build capacity, promote dialogue, and strengthen cooperation in maritime defence

Commanding Officer, Guinex V Defender Commander Matos also mentioned that the training would enhance boarding procedures, inspections, communication, and navigation.

Commodore Solomon Asiedu-Larbi stated that the visit demonstrates the shared commitment of Ghana and Brazil to enhancing naval cooperation, improving operational capabilities, supporting maritime initiatives and assured them of the Ghana Navy’s commitment to defence and security cooperation between both countries.

  • Managers, Directors of Nursing services ordered to work daily as GRNMA embarks on strike action

Managers, Directors of Nursing services ordered to work daily as GRNMA embarks on strike action

The Ministry of Health has issued several directives to mitigate the effects of the strike action embarked on by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

GRNMA embarked on a strike action on Monday June 2, to demand payment of their outstanding allowances following unsuccessful discussions with the ministry

“We negotiated our conditions of service. It was signed, sealed, and delivered, but it is not seeing implementation…and all that we are asking the Ministry of Finance is to approve the signed commission of service for implementation,” President of the GRNMA, Dr David Tenkorang Twum, told the media.

In response, the Ministry of Health on May 30th, met all Associations in the nursing fraternity, including the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives (UPNMG), Ghana Registered Midwives Association (GRMA), National Association of Registered Midwives (NARM-G), Psychiatric Nurses Association, Ghana (PAPNG) and the Nurses and Midwives Educators Society.

During the meeting, all parties except the GRNMA accepted the sector minister’s proposal for a three (3) member team with a representation each from the Nurses group, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Health to see to the finality of the matter.

GNRMA members have withdrawn from their posts, but to ensure that the general public continues to access quality healthcare, the Health Ministry has instructed all hospital managers, particularly Directors of Nursing Services and their Deputies, to be present at work at all times during the period of the industrial action.

Also, the ambulance service is expected to remain on standby in every district to support emergency situations promptly. Additionally, all health facilities are to establish coordinating structures that can effectively manage emergencies and maintain continuous communication with ambulance services to ensure a swift response when needed.

Furthermore, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, along with Chief Executive Officers and Medical Directors of Teaching Hospitals, is required to provide daily reports to the Acting Chief Director on the status of healthcare service delivery within their respective institutions.

To manage the anticipated surge in patient numbers due to ongoing industrial action, the Ministry of Health has pledged to collaborate with quasi-government health facilities. This partnership aims to ease the pressure on public health institutions and ensure continuous care delivery.

The Ministry has also advised rotational nurses and those currently undergoing mandatory clinical training to refrain from participating in any form of industrial action. Their cooperation is crucial in maintaining essential services during this period.

Ongoing monitoring of the situation will be conducted by the Ministry to ensure that all necessary logistics and resources are made available to mitigate the impact of the strike.

The Ministry of Health has expressed its appreciation to the nurses and midwives who have chosen not to engage in the industrial action while appealing to the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to reconsider their stance in the interest of public health and service continuity.

However, the GRNMA remains resolute in its decision to intensify the strike with plans to withdraw both outpatient and emergency services across the country.

Amaarae makes an appearance in Blanc Magazine

Ghanaian-American pop star, Ama Serwah Genfi, popularly known as Amaarae, has made an appearance in the renowned Blanc Magazine.

The “Sad Gurlz Luv Money” hitmaker took to X on June 3, to share photos confirming the news with the caption “@BlancMag Issue 30 cover.”

The magazine’s cover shows a striking photo of her sitting on the edge of a radio with the words “Living on the Edge” written across it.

A fashion designer based in London, Karoline Vitto, and a few others were also featured in Blanc Magazine.

Apart from the photos of Amaarae, the magazine shared a message about how fashion, art, and identity can come together in powerful ways, such as the edge is not the end but a new beginning.

Recently, Amaarae was lauded by the originator of the Black Star Experience initiative, presidential staffer Rex Omar, for proudly promoting Ghanaian music at the globally recognised Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

In an interview on JoyPrime TV, the veteran musician described Amaarae’s April 13 performance as a patriotic gesture that reflects the spirit behind the Black Star Experience — an initiative aimed at encouraging Ghanaians to project the country’s identity and values on the world stage.

“Amaarae choosing to perform Ghanaian songs at Coachella shows that we shouldn’t always think about what the country can do for us. Ask yourself, what can you do to promote the country? You are the Black Star represented on the Ghana flag,” Rex Omar stated.

He noted that her performance, which featured songs by local acts such as Eazzy, Joey B, La Meme Gang, and the Asakaa Boys, goes beyond entertainment and serves as a symbol of cultural pride and national representation.

Highlighting the influence of creatives in shaping Ghana’s global image, Rex Omar called on Ghanaians, especially the youth, to embrace their role as ambassadors of the nation, urging them to be intentional in showcasing Ghanaian music, fashion, food, and lifestyle.

“Every Ghanaian must see themselves as part of Ghana’s story. Whether it’s through music, social media, or your personal choices, ask yourself, Am I being the Black Star today?” he added.

The Coachella performance by Amaarae, which has since drawn widespread praise, is seen as a reminder of how individual efforts can contribute to Ghana’s cultural diplomacy and global relevance.

Kwaw Kese, Showboy and 4 other Ghanaian musicians with prison records

Over the years, several Ghanaian musicians have found themselves on the wrong side of the law, resulting in arrests, court cases, and even prison time.

Being a celebrity does not shield them from justice; hence, they face the law just like anyone else.

Below are six popular Ghanaian musicians who have served jail time for various offences.

    Gemann

Nana Kwasi Agyemang, popularly known as Gemann, was once a celebrated musician and dancer in Ghana.

However, his life took a tragic turn in 1995 when he shot and killed a taxi driver during an altercation.

He was sentenced to death by hanging but later had his sentence commuted. After serving 14 years in prison, Gemann was granted a presidential pardon in 2009. Following his release, he turned his life around and is now a pastor.

    Kwaw Kese

In 2014, rapper Kwaw Kese was arrested in Kumasi for publicly smoking a substance believed to be Indian hemp.

He spent time at the Kumasi Central Prison before being granted bail.

Eventually, the court sentenced him to one day in jail and imposed a fine of GH₵1,200, which he paid.

Though his jail time was brief, the incident was a major talking point in the media and marked a significant moment in his life.

    Showboy

Sam Safo, known in music circles as Showboy, was sentenced to six years in prison in the United States for his role in a violent altercation in 2016.

During a fight in an apartment in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Showboy was caught on video stabbing the victim multiple times, in the chest, armpit, and behind the ear, and biting his face.

He was convicted of aggravated battery by the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office.

After serving his sentence, Showboy was released in 2023 and deported to Ghana.

    Medikal

Rapper Medikal, born Samuel Adu Frimpong, faced legal trouble in October 2021 after he posted a video on Snapchat showing a Ruger 9mm pistol while sitting in his car.

He was arrested and charged with the unlawful display of arms and ammunition. Medikal was remanded into prison custody for five days before being released.

    Shatta Wale

In October 2021, dancehall artiste Shatta Wale was arrested for spreading false news about his own death, claiming he had been shot.

This claim, according to the police, was said to have beenintended to cause fear and panic.

Shatta was held in custody for a week before being granted bail. Later, he pleaded guilty to publishing false information and was fined GH₵2,000.

    Mona4Reall

Ghanaian socialite and musician Mona Montrage, popularly known as Mona4Reall, was arrested in the UK in November 2022 in connection with an $8 million romance scam.

She pleaded guilty in February 2024 to conspiring to receive stolen funds, with reports indicating that over $2 million in fraudulent proceeds had passed through her accounts.

On June 28, 2024, Mona4Reall was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison, along with three years of supervised release. She completed her sentence and was released on May 22, 2025.

Audio version of Ghana’s Constitution created by music producer to be presented for govt review

An audio version of the 1992 Constitution will be submitted to President John Dramani Mahama and the Constitution Review Committee by music producer Joseph Appiah, popularly known as Quick Action.

Quick Action is itching to present an audiobook, which was produced many years ago when he conceived the idea of making the Constitution relatable to citizens in major local dialects.

“The laudable idea has received a high number of endorsements from some politicians, media houses, and legal practitioners. Finally, the idea received formal approval by the previous government in the year 2022,” Joseph Appiah stated.

He believes that several Ghanaians do not understand their constitutional rights because it is a struggle for them to understand them in the English language.

Hence, his optimism that the president will fully support his efforts.

“I am a citizen of Ghana, and I believe if the Constitution, which is the mother of all legal documents and practices, is written in English, it makes many citizens act as if they are not citizens.”

“Almost 90% of Ghanaians can not access even the fundamental human rights of the Constitution. President Mahama is a listening president, and I know he will ensure the implementation of this initiative,” he noted.

Joseph Appiah further mentioned that the Constitution is old enough to be translated, recorded, and produced in local languages for easy access and for other relevant usage in the future.

It is, however, not clear when Quick Action will present the document to the president.

In 2023, Quick Action asked organisers of the annual Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA ) to honour him with a merit award for his immense contribution to Ghanaian music and a larger extent, the scheme’s success.

In a Facebook post yesterday, April 23, 2023, Quick Action, who has produced works for several award-winning Ghanaian artists such as Samini, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Okomfo Kwaade, Ohemaa Mercy, Cindy Thompson, among many others, said the progress of Ghanaian music could be attributed to the numerous sacrifices he has made in the industry.

    LETTER TO VGMA

    “Dear VGMA,

“It is with much gratitude I write this letter, I also wish to Congratulate you for the touch of excellence you put up in regards of your annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards scheme over the years.

King of the Hill actor, Jonathan Joss, dies in shooting incident

US actor Jonathan Joss has died in a shooting incident that ensued in San Antonio.

According to his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, a man “started yelling violent homophobic slurs” before opening fire while they were visiting their former home, which was destroyed in a fire in January.

But the police in Texas say investigations have found no evidence to confirm that Mr. Joss’ murder was related to that.

CBS reported that officers found Joss lying near a road in San Antonio after receiving a call about a shooting incident.

Meanwhile, one suspect, identified as Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, has been arrested currently in connection with Joss’ murder.

San Antonio Police Department’s statement read, “Investigators handle these allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. Should any new evidence come to light, the suspect will be charged accordingly.”

A tribute has been shared by Parks and Recreation actor Nick Offerman, stating, “The cast has been texting together about it all day and we’re just heartbroken. Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.”

A statement shared by King of the Hill’s creators Mike Judge, Greg Daniels and Saladin Patterson also said, “Jonathan Joss brought King of the Hill’s John Redcorn to life for over a dozen seasons, including in the upcoming revival. His voice will be missed at King of the Hill, and we extend our deepest condolences to Jonathan’s friends and family.”

Joss, 59, was known for voicing John Redcorn on long-running TV animation King of the Hill, and played Chief Ken Hotate in sitcom Parks and Recreation.

An American trade magazine, Variety, also stated that the deceased was spotted in public on Friday during a King of the Hill panel at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas.

Joss had even written on Facebook about his displeasure at not being invited to be on the panel.

“This show was a part of my life for many years,” he wrote in April.

“That character, that voice, that story… they were my home, my pride, my connection to something bigger than myself. To not be invited felt like being shut out of a place I helped build.”

The show, set in Texas, is about the life of propane salesman Hank Hill and his family and friends. It was created in 1997 by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels and ran for more than 250 episodes.

“Burn in hell” – Burna Boy’s response to trolls after Burkina Faso snub

Afrobeat superstar Burna Boy, has fired back at critics in a scathing social media outburst after reports emerged that Burkina Faso’s military leader, President Ibrahim Traoré declined his offer to stage a free concert in the West African country.

The Grammy-winning artist, known for his outspoken nature, was left frustrated not just by the reported snub from the Burkinabé government but by the wave of backlash and trolls that followed his proposed gesture.

In a fiery post shared on X, Burna Boy made it clear that while his intentions were genuine, the unwarranted criticism he received from trolls and online commentators had crossed a line.

“I have nothing to gain from anybody, and I don’t owe anyone anything—but that never stopped me from doing the great work I do. My integrity is unquestionable. Therefore, burn in hell if you said anything negative,” Burna Boy wrote.

President Ibrahim Traoré reportedly declined the offer for a free concert, citing that Burkina Faso needed no distractions amid current national challenges.

Mr Traoré is currently prioritizing economic self-reliance by taking control of the gold mining industry, suspending

Months ago, Burna Boy encouraged aspiring Nigerian musicians to strive for excellence above the excitement of social media attention and local popularity.

In a viral post, he warned that the buzz from Twitter polls and support on social media might seem exciting, but doesn’t necessarily lead to long-term career growth.

He advised Nigerian artists to focus on bigger goals rather than celebrating local chart positions, which may not bring much financial benefit.

He highlighted the difference in earnings from music streams depending on location.

For example, one million streams in Nigeria might only earn an artist about $300 to $400, while in countries like the UK, US, or in Europe, the same number of streams could generate $3,000 to $4,000 or more.

Burna Boy emphasized that reaching the top of Nigerian charts should not be seen as a major accomplishment if it doesn’t lead to significant income or international recognition.

He encouraged artists to aim higher, targeting global markets, or to consider diversifying their careers with other business ventures to secure financial stability alongside their music.

  • We do not regard titles, everyone is the same to us – Special Prosecutor

We do not regard titles, everyone is the same to us – Special Prosecutor

Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has stressed that the Office of the Speccial Prosecutor (OSP) is driven by principles and not personalities.

His comment comes on the back of criticisms surrounding his decision to declare former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, wanted for a probe into allegations of financial loss to the state.

During a press briefing on Monday, June 2, Mr Agyebeng defended his stance by re-declaring Ken Odori Atta as a wanted man, insisting he is not above the law.

“The OSP stands for this: we do not regard persons, we do not regard titles, we do not regard your status in life. Everyone is the same to us. No one is beyond our purview. Everyone is fair game if we think you are our suspect in a criminal enquiry,” he told the media.

The legal team of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta requested a virtual session with the Office of the Special Prosecutor for a probe into the allegations leveled against him, but this request was denied.

Ken Ofori-Atta was expected to appear before the Office of Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Monday, June 2, however, that did not happen.

His legal team is said to have formally communicated the development to the OSP and the Human Rights Court, submitting medical reports that detail his current condition and outline scheduled surgical procedures.

The OSP has denied the aforementioned information.

Mr Ofori has thus been declared a wanted person again, and an Interpol Red Notice has been issued.

In February, the OSP declared Ofori-Atta wanted for causing financial loss to the state in several dealings, which include the following:

Contractual arrangement between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority for the stated objective of the enhancement of revenue assurance in the downstream petroleum sector, upstream petroleum production, and minerals and metals resource value chain.

Termination of a distribution, loss reduction, and associated network improvement project contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited and Beijing Xhao Chen Technology BXC.

Procurement of contractors and materials and activities and payments in respect of the National Cathedral project

Activities and payments in respect of a contract awarded by the Ministry of Health initially commenced by the Ministry for Special Development Initiative to service Ghana Auto Group Limited for purchases and after-sales service and maintenance of 307 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 304 5 CDI Ambulances for the National Ambulance Service.

Payments out of and utilization of the tax refund account of the Ghana Revenue Authority.

Later, the legal representatives of the former finance minister informed the OSP that their client is currently undergoing medical treatment in the United States and is unable to honor an invitation for questioning.

Ofori-Atta then assured the OSP of its commitment to appearing for questioning on a fixed date, which influenced the OSP’s decision to temporarily take his name off the list in March.

However, the office stressed that he is legally obligated to show up on June 2. Failure to do so, an Interpol Red Notice would be issued and extradition proceedings would be initiated in any country where he may be located.

Ken Ofori-Atta then took legal steps to block the OSP from re-declaring him wanted. His lawsuit argues that the agency’s actions are baseless and unjustified.

Ofori-Atta has dismissed allegations of financial misconduct and corruption, insisting that he has been cooperating with investigators through his legal representatives.

In his court filing, he contends that the OSP’s actions have inflicted serious harm on his reputation and personal life. He is seeking a legal injunction to prevent further declarations against him until the case is fully resolved.

The Human Rights Court has adjourned to June 18 for a ruling on the motion filed by the former Finance Minister, seeking to restrain the OSP from declaring him wanted, among other reliefs.

    INTERPOL Red Notice

A Red Notice is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.

It is based on an arrest warrant or court order issued by the judicial authorities in the requesting country. Member countries apply their own laws in deciding whether to arrest a person.

INTERPOL cannot compel the law enforcement authorities in any country to arrest someone who is the subject of a Red Notice.

Each member country decides what legal value it gives to a Red Notice and the authority of their law enforcement officers to make arrests.

While addressing a gathering of persons with special needs at the ministry on Monday May 2, Mr Iddrisu mentioned that the registration is imperative to ensure funds are successfully disbursed to applicants, reiterating President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to make higher education fully accessible to PWDs.

“We are collecting data on persons with disabilities from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and all tertiary institutions for the effective implementation of this policy,” the minister stated. “Your funding will come through the Student Loan Trust, so every person with a disability needs to register,” he stated.

Honourable Iddrisu received a delegation from the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations, led by their president, Mr. Joseph Atsu Homadzie on May 2.

The Federation congratulated the Minister on his appointment and discussed key concerns affecting Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the education sector.

Top on their agenda were access to tertiary education for PWDs, timelines for rolling out the Inclusive Education Policy, budgetary allocations for disability-friendly education, introduction of sign language in basic schools, as promised by H.E John Dramani Mahama and provision of assistive technology to enhance learning for PWDs.

Hon. Iddrisu expressed his appreciation and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to addressing all the issues raised, emphasizing that inclusive education remains a key priority in the government’s Resetting Ghana Agenda.

The ministry has already opened a registration portal to help first-year students at public tertiary institutions in Ghana apply for financial assistance under the government’s new No-Fees-Stress Policy.

This initiative, which is being managed by the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), is aimed at easing the financial burden on students and ensuring that no Ghanaian is denied access to higher education due to lack of funds.

Launching the portal on Monday, April 29, 2025, Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu described the policy as a bold and strategic move by government to improve access to tertiary education and invest in the country’s future workforce.

The SLTF explained that the new system will make it easier for eligible students to register, submit their details, and be assessed for financial support. The portal is now live and can be accessed via https://www.nofeestress.sltf.gov.gh or https://www.sltf.gov.gh.

For additional assistance, students are encouraged to call 0302751020 or visit any SLTF zonal office across the country.

Meanwhile the government has clarified that first-year public university students who have already paid their academic fees for the current academic year will not receive cash refunds.

Instead, the government will apply the equivalent amount as credit toward the students’ second-year fees.

Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Clement Apaak explained to the media that although direct reimbursements will not be made this year, students will still benefit from the policy through a credit arrangement.

“The same students are going to be continuing. Rather than the physical reimbursement, going forward, as they go into their second year, what should have come to them to defer their academic fee for the first year will become a credit, which will then mean that as they go to second year, they wouldn’t have to pay because they have already paid for their first year,” Dr. Apaak stated.

He added that the credited funds would be channeled directly to the respective universities to ensure transparency and avoid logistical complications.

“This approach helps us avoid logistical challenges and any potential impropriety,” he said.

The “No-Fee Stress” initiative was a major campaign promise by then-presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama, who pledged to absorb academic fees for all Level 100 students within the first 120 days of his administration.

This commitment was reaffirmed by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during his ministerial vetting earlier this year. At the time, he assured the public that measures were being put in place to issue refunds to students who had already settled their fees.

“We intend to provide that money to the affected universities, at least to make refunds to all those who have already paid those fees,” he stated.

However, with the latest update, the reimbursement model has now shifted to a credit-based system.

To support the rollout of the “No-Fee Stress” policy, GH¢499.8 million has been allocated under the 2025 national budget, which was presented to Parliament by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on Tuesday, March 11.

The policy forms part of a wider government effort to reduce financial strain on families and make tertiary education more accessible, especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Other key education-related budget allocations for 2025 include GH¢3.5 billion for the Free SHS programme, GH¢564.6 million for free curriculum-based textbooks, and an increase in funding for the School Feeding Programme from GH¢1.344 billion to GH¢1.788 billion, marking a 33% rise.

‘I used to talk a lot’ – MzGee reveals how people mastermind the downfall of others

Ghanaian media personality Gloria Akpene Nyarku, popularly known as MzGee, has stated that talking too much often gives others the information they need to work against you.

Speaking on her latest Gee O’Clock show, MzGee said it took the intervention of God to identify individuals who were her friends but were working behind the scenes against her with information she disclosed to them.

“I used to talk a lot… telling people I want to do this, I want to be that… but people don’t really care. Some are only listening to mock you or steal your ideas.”

“They know everything about you, yet they’re masterminding your downfall,” she stated.

She has urged individuals who find themselves in competitive circles to be hesitant when it comes to sharing their dreams with colleagues and supposedly close associates.

MzGee has also shared her perspective on life’s challenges and how she navigates them.

She said that life experiences do not always turn out successful, but even in failure, there are always lessons to be learnt.

“I realised that truly, truly, what John Maxwell said in his book. Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn, is actually true,” she said on her Gee O’clock show.

The broadcaster indicated that some books teach real-life lessons, but people often ignore them until those lessons pan out in their own lives.

She now considers failure as an opportunity to correct the wrongs to achieve excellent results in life.

“Sometimes you need to fail so you can revisit your notes, look at where you went wrong, and then come back so hard,” she said.

Commenting on other matters, MzGee opened up about her deeply personal experience with motherhood, revealing the emotional and physical challenges she faced during and after childbirth.

“Motherhood is a big deal,” she reflected with a voice thick with emotion. “When you go through it, you understand. If you don’t respect your mother, if you speak to her anyhow—ah, you will regret it.”

I paused music to heal from depression – Ko-Jo Cue

Ghanaian rapper Ko-Jo Cue has stated that he had to put his music career on hold to heal from depression.

According to the rapper, he consulted a therapist to guide him through his healing process; however, the decision to put music aside was solely his to make.

“… I did that by myself. I just was not in a space where I could create anymore at all,” he said during a Joy Showbiz Roundtable discussion.

The rapper revealed that his depressive state led him to gift all his studio equipment, demonstrating how emotionally detached he had become from music.

“When I talk about depression, I’m talking about not wanting to see anybody, not wanting to do anything, and not wanting to talk to anybody at any point in time. I gave away all my studio equipment, stopped recording music, didn’t want to engage with anything, and didn’t want to be a part of the day-to-day of life and living,” Ko-Jo Cue expressed.

He mentioned that sessions with the therapist mostly involved talking about his feelings.

“Going back in time to also explore certain things that led me to that particular place, but then also teaching me mindfulness, meditation practices, teaching me how to separate things that were happening to me from things that I was imagining and how to be rooted in the now and in reality, and just how to notice when I’m having an episode so that I’ll direct myself towards things that calm me down, things that bring me back to reality,” he explained.

Ko-Jo Cue earlier disclosed that he embarked on a journey to 5 countries as therapy to protect his mental health.

“I traveled extensively. At one point, I visited Nigeria, then Kenya, spent some time in the US, and even lived in Italy for a while. My travels took me all over, including various places here. The essence behind that was simple: a change in environment can often clear your head,” he told ZionFelix during an interview.

Ko-Jo Cue compared the experience to the sense of sanity one feels after tidying up a room.

“It’s similar to how tidying up your room can enhance your mental clarity. When you are in a new space, your brain is flooded with fresh information to process, leaving little room for overthinking or moping. It helps you reset.”

The rapper indicated that seeking therapy, nurturing friendships, gardening, and his traveling experience contributed greatly to maintaining his emotional balance.

He has advised musicians to prioritize mental health, emphasizing the importance of being vulnerable in order to get help when the need arises.

He asserts that asking for help should be seen as an act of strength rather than weakness.

For him, acknowledging mental health challenges is a critical step toward personal growth and healing.

The cause of the septuagenarian’s death, including the date of when he passed, is not officially known.

A radio station based in Rihanna’s native Barbados, Starcom Network News, reported that Mr. Fenty died after battling a short illness.

Rihanna’s younger brother Rajad Fenty was seen arriving at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles with Rihanna who was not visibly seen in a vehicle both of them were in.

The news comes at a time when the beauty and music mogul is expecting her third baby with her lover, A$AP Rocky.

She had a complicated relationship with her father for several years before eventually making amends.

In a 2012 interview with Oprah, Rihanna revealed that her father was violent when she was growing up, but it is not known whether that was the cause of their estranged relationship.

In 2019, she filed a lawsuit against him and his business partner, Moses Perkins, accusing them of attempting to profit off her name by launching a company called Fenty Entertainment.

She alleged they misled investors by falsely claiming she was involved in the venture. Rihanna dropped the lawsuit shortly before it was set to go to trial in 2021, according to the BBC.

Fenty shared three children — Rihanna, Rajad and Rorrey — with his ex-wife, Monica Braithwaite.

The couple divorced in 2002. The family was raised in Bridgetown, Barbados, where Rihanna lived until she moved to the U.S. at age 16.

He also had three children from previous relationships: daughters Samantha and Kandy and son Jamie, “People” reports.

I am already married to Zuchu- Tanzanian singer Diamond Platnumz announces

Tanzanian musician Diamond Platnumz has announced that he is already married to his girlfriend of many years, Zuchu.

While the actual date of their marriage ceremony remains unknown, the musician noted that many people never expected him to become somebody’s husband, largely due to the perception that he is a womanizer.

“Anyway, I know each of you has a completely different picture of Diamond Platnumz and marriage, but today I want to tell you that this Diamond Platnumz has already married,” he wrote on Instagram.

Diamond further recounted his journey of how he kept his love life away from the public eye.

“Among the things I have learned is the maturity of staying silent… This maturity requires a high level of patience, it requires you to have a patient heart and especially to strengthen your spirit when someone or people are accusing you of some evil in society, but you have your truth but you are required to just stay silent,” he wrote in an Instagram post.

For those interested in knowing how his love story unfolded, the Tanzanian musician expressed a willingness to share in due time.

“…one day I will tell you how it happened,” he said in a post shared on Instagram.

In other news, Tanzanian singer Juma Jux held the last part of his wedding celebrations on May 28.

Jux and his wife have already celebrated their marriage in several countries.

In a video shared on Instagram, Jux joked that his wife is worn out from all the ceremonies, outfit changes, and cultural expectations—while he mostly just had to wear a suit.

He mentioned that even after five or six ceremonies, it still doesn’t feel like enough.

His dream was to celebrate their love in every country that means something to them, including Rwanda, where they first met.

Despite how tiring it’s been, Jux praised his wife for handling it all.

My dad’s call took me out of my darkest moment – Dancegod on DWP exit

Ghanaian dancer and choreographer Laud Anoo Konadu, popularly known as Dancegod Lloyd, has revealed that a rare phone call from his father was what pulled him out of the “darkest” moment of his life.

The dancer was subjected to a series of attacks on social media in the aftermath of his exit from the DWP (Dance with Purpose) group in 2023.

During the period of his exit, Dancegod stated that he felt lost, as though everything he had toiled for was going into the ditch, simply because of the backlash he received from netizens.

Some individuals encouraged him not to give up, but an unusual midnight phone call from his dad was what helped him pull himself together to get back on track.

“I started getting voice notes from people. These were like top people. Some were calling, don’t give up. I remember my dad called me in the middle of the night. My dad does not call me at that time.”

“He will not even call. If I want to talk to my dad, I have to go through my mom. But he called me. He was like these things happen to the greatest. After that call, I was like, I’m ready for the world,” he shared in an interview on the Konnected Minds podcast.

Dancegod believes that all those who attacked him did so because they were oblivious of the actual details of the story, yet it made him emotionally displaced and mentally unstable.

“When I started getting backlashes from people on the internet about me leaving my ex-dance crew, they didn’t know the story. I was disturbed, I was depressed, I was thinking differently,” he shared.

Dancegod Lloyd was crowned Dancer of the Year at the second edition of the Ghana Dance Industry (GHADI) Awards, held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the National Theatre.

His former dance group, DWP Academy, also took home the coveted Street Dance Group of the Year award.

Afronitaaa and Abigail received Dance Merit Awards for their outstanding contributions as Street Dance Culture Ambassadors.

In the fiercely contested Dancer of the Year category, Dancegod Lloyd emerged victorious despite tough competition from Incredible Zigi, AfroNitaaa, Endurance Grand, Ezuntey Flex, and Bboy Lyricx.

Team Hubes earned the title of Dance Athletes of the Year (Group), while Afrikiko Leisure Centre was named Afro-Latin Dance Club of the Year.

The Agoo Cultural Group won Traditional Dance Group of the Year, and Let’s Dance Africa was recognized as the Praise Dance Group of the Year.

The event celebrated excellence in dance, with many other talented dancers and groups also being recognized for their achievements.

Posigee laments the absence of pension fund for creatives in Ghana

Renowned Ghanaian music producer and sound engineer Awal Alhassan, popularly known as Posigee, has highlighted the absence of retirement benefits for creatives in Ghana.

In an interview on Property FM in Cape Coast, the musician stated that he is currently enrolled in a Finland school to adequately prepare for his retirement.

“When we grow old, there’s no money that will be given to us as retirement benefits because the government hasn’t designed any pension scheme for us,” he lamented.

He has therefore placed his music career on hold to focus on his education.

“I haven’t stopped music production, but right now I’m furthering my studies in Finland because there’s no pension scheme for us, the sound engineers,” he told the station, as monitored by the media.

Talent and brand manager Bernard Kafui Sokpe, popularly known as Mista Meister, has also vowed never to invest into organizing concerts in Ghana.

His comment is a reaction to Executive Director of Big Ideaz Consult, Kojo Poku’s recent remarks on Joy FM that,

“We are all (every event organiser) in debt, people are chasing me and calling my phone every day because we do events hoping we get it back.”

While Mista Meister did not mention a particular event he organized and made losses, he confirms that the venture is indeed not worth their time and effort.

“Events in Ghana are not lucrative. Especially high-budget events like concerts etc. Even if you have Jesus Christ and the 12 disciples as headliners, the cost of setting up the event always out budgets ticketing revenue and sponsorships. Me mome dieeer never again!” he wrote.

Founder and Executive Director of Guinness Ghana DJ Awards, Merqury Quaye and YFM radio presenter, Kojo Manuel, have been complaining for a couple of years about how event organisers treat MCs in terms of compensation.

Merqury Quaye called on event organizers to provide fairer compensation for MCs, while Kojo Manuel questioned why these organizers tend to undervalue the work of MCs as merely supplementary to the event.

Kojo Manuel revealed instances where some event MCs were compensated with drinks and even women.

“This is strictly a business unless you are telling me that you are giving me something that I value in return for it. No two ways,” he noted.

Kojo further highlighted that even media houses engage in business transactions with clients but are remunerated with airtime, which is a mutually agreed upon arrangement.

“It’s an agreement but you don’t call me and tell me that I have ten bottles for you,” ” he pointed out.

According to Kojo, this type of compensation is often encountered by MCs who primarily work in the party-oriented segment of the industry.

“When I was coming up some of the things that I was offered to be paid with was my name being on the artwork alone. That was somebody’s way of trying to pay me.

“Because nobody knew me and they were putting my name on the artwork. They would say ‘oh when you come in you will get free drinks. When you come in, I will introduce you to girls’,” he stated.

EMY Africa rebrands to Evolve, Motivate, Yield Africa 10 years on

Founder and Executive Director of Emy Africa, Kojo Soboh, has announced that his awards brand, which used to mean Executive Men of the Year (EMY), has been rebranded to Evolve, Motivate, Yield Africa (EMY Africa).

During the launch of the 10th Anniversary celebration at the Labadi Beach Hotel on Thursday, May 29, under the theme “A Decade of Inspiring Greatness,” Mr Soboh explained that the rebranding is a reflection of growth and evolution over the years.

He noted that EMY has expanded to include various initiatives and projects beyond the original awards show.

“This is our 10th-anniversary launch and, first of all, we have rebranded EMY Africa. EMY used to stand for Exclusive Men of the Year because it started with the awards. But over the years, we’ve expanded, evolved, created new products, and launched new projects.

“So we decided to create an umbrella organization and change the meaning to Evolve, Motivate, Yield Africa. EMY Africa now stands for that, and it represents all the events and initiatives we are undertaking,” he explained.

  • Let’s push Ibrahim Mahama or Alan Cash to succeed Mahama – Medikal to Ghanaians

Let’s push Ibrahim Mahama or Alan Cash to succeed Mahama – Medikal to Ghanaians

Ghanaian rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, has advised Ghanaians to vote for Mr Ibrahim Mahama (brother of President Mahama) or Alan Kyerematen, popularly known as Alan Cash (leader of the Movement for Change), to retain President Mahama’s legacy after his 4-year term is over.

Medikal believes that President Mahama’s leadership since his inauguration on January 7, 2025, has been nothing short of impressive.

Unfortunately, he is currently serving his final term, which is set to conclude in January 2029.

With hopes that the president will continue to favourably steer the affairs of the nation, Medikal appeals to Ghanaians not to hand over power to anyone other than Ibrahim Mahama or Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyeremateng in the next election.

“Make una pray make Mahama no leave power oo, very serious guy ! Even if he does finish his term, he should pass it over to Ibrahim Mahama, his brother or Alan Cash. These men have serious ambitions to make Ghana a great nation trust me,” Medikal wrote on his X account.

Mr Ibraham Mahama, who is known to be a businessman, has been very supportive of his brother’s presidency through the provision of financial aid to citizens who had challenges difficult to handle due to the lack of funds.

The businessman donated GH₵100,000 to various communities affected by tidal wave flooding in the Volta Region months ago.

He also donated $25,000 for a young girl’s kidney transplant including several others.

He contributed $100,000 towards leukemia treatment for another child several months ago.

His contributions to industry and social impact have earned him prestigious honors, including African Industrialist of the Year and the Ultimate Man of the Year award.

Alan Kyeremanten, on the other hand, visited Katamanto market with some senior members of the Movement for Change alliance in January to show their solidarity with victims of a fire outbreak that ravaged several shops in the area.

They donated GHS100,000 to the affected traders to ease their immediate challenges, a move that was deeply appreciated by the traders.

He has also been acknowledged for his vision for the youth in Ghana and several initiatives to make every nook and cranny of their lives better.

President John Dramani Mahama has made significant strides in governance, economy, education, and social welfare in the first 120 days of his new term, though several pledges are yet to be initiated.

The swift nomination of a full cabinet, reflecting Mahama’s commitment to getting the machinery of government moving without delay, forms part of his major accomplishments.

His administration has also formed a leaner government, reducing the number of ministers and presidential staffers.

One of the most praised initiatives is the introduction of a Code of Conduct for appointees, aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership.

In economic policy, Mahama has delivered on his pledge to convene a National Economic Dialogue, bringing together experts and stakeholders to shape a long-term recovery agenda.

Similarly, a National Education Dialogue was organized to realign policy direction in the education sector.

The administration has launched several social and environmental programs, including “Tree for Life” and “Blue Water”, which focus on reforestation and water resource protection. The No Fee Stress initiative has also been introduced to reduce the financial burden on basic school parents.

Mahama’s government has abolished the E-Levy, Betting Tax, and Emissions Levy, providing immediate financial relief to citizens and businesses, with the Covid-19 Levy expected to be removed in the next budget.

Other notable fulfilled promises include: Launch of the one Million Coders Programme to build digital skills among youth, rollout of the Mahama Cares social protection framework, introduction of the Adwumawura Programme to promote job creation, free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, free sanitary pad initiative for schoolgirls, Black Star Experience, a flagship tourism and cultural revival program, seed money for the Women’s Development Bank, Establishment of the Accelerated Export Development Council, probing the Akosombo dam spillage, which affected thousands and the restructuring of loss-making State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to ensure efficiency

  • KOKA threathens EOCO staff as crowd demands release of Wontumi

KOKA threathens EOCO staff as crowd demands release of Wontumi

Media personality, Kwaku Osei Korankye Asiedu, popularly known as KOKA has threatened staff of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), allegedly making mockery of him and other NPP stalwarts present at their premises, demanding Chairman Wontumi’s removal from detention.

“I know where you stay, you are laughing at us. We know you…be there mocking us, and your time will come,” he said while pointing to the EOCO building in a video circulating on social media.

He also commented on efforts by the police to deny them access to the EOCO office.

He is of the belief that the police are only working in favour of the NDC rather than serving the interests of Ghanaians.

“Right now, it is a personal vendetta because the police are working for the government…The police are telling us they won’t give us the chance to enter the premises… I want them to know it was a reset, but the process isn’t done.”

He assured EOCO that in due time, the tables will turn and they will pay for their actions.

“The process would be formatted, and at that time, when we know you, we would bring you from your room for judgment,” he added.

There has been heavy security presence at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO)in Accra today, Friday, May 30.

The deployment of police is in response to the large members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have thronged EOCO’s headquarters protesting the continued detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi spent Wednesday night in the custody of EOCO’s headquarters.

EOCO arrested Chairman Wontumi on Tuesday after he appeared before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service at 3pm.

He was sent to the hospital over illness and was sent to EOCO’s custody after getting better.

He failed to make a ¢50 million bail with two sureties, both of which must be justified. According to the Minority, the bail is exorbitant and must be varied.

On Tuesday, supporters of the opposition party massed up at the EOCO office, demanding the release of Wontumi.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman voluntarily made an appearance at the CID headquarters on Monday alongside his legal team, including former Attorney General Godfred Dame, after an invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

He was cautioned on the following allegations: undertaking mining operations without a license, entering a forest reserve without authorisation and pollution of water bodies.

However, according to sources, Chairman Wontumi denied these claims during his interrogation, presenting documents to authenticate his claims.

He insists he was not involved in any illegal mining activities or operating in any forest reserve.

Following the interrogations, the CID granted him bail with two sureties, though the exact amount has not yet been disclosed.

This follows a failed attempt by a joint team of national security operatives and police officers to arrest him at his residence on May 23.

After the failed search attempt, Mr Boasiako expressed his displeasure over a search that was orchestrated by national security operatives at his residence.

The search comes after Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Buah, ordered the immediate revocation of Akonta Mining’s licenses, citing allegations of illegal mining and other violations.

During the press briefing, he accused the company of being involved in galamsey operations and breaching mining regulations.

Buah also claimed that Akonta Mining was illegally selling mining concessions within the Aboi Forest to unauthorized miners, charging up to GH₵300,000 per concession, with some payments reportedly made in gold royalties.

Akonta Mining Company Limited, owned by Chairman Wontumi, has taken legal action against the Minerals Commission and the Minister of Lands, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, claiming GH₵20 million in damages.

The company alleges that during a press conference on April 22, Minister Buah made defamatory remarks, accusing Akonta Mining of illegal mining activities within the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

  • Trade among yourselves and build together – Wode Maya to Africans

Trade among yourselves and build together – Wode Maya to Africans

Renowned Ghanaian vlogger, Woda Maya, has urged African countries to foster unity among themselves through trade as part of efforts to decrease reliance on external aid.

“It’s about time for you to start trading with each other. It’s about time for us to put our differences and tribal stuff aside. We should put our political affiliation aside, come together, and build Africa,” he added.

He believes that foreigners are Africa’s greatest enemy, benefiting from its resources for their greater good.

“These nations are only after Africa’s natural resources. Africans must wake up and stop placing their trust in foreign powers that exploit rather than empower,” he stated.

He adds that Africa can break free from dependence on foreign aid if unity is strengthened across the continent.

“Africa can only be built by Africans. Don’t let anyone lie to you! China is not your friend, Russia is not your friend. Europeans are not your friends,” he said.

It’s unclear what prompted Wode Maya’s remarks, as the video does not indicate where or in what context he was speaking.

Wode Maya was given given a special recognition by the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), for shining some light on their country.

Barbados Today reports that Wode (real name Kobina Ackon) was honoured with a special painting months ago at a We Gatherin’ ceremony hosted by the Barbados High Commission in Ghana.

High Commissioner Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland declared herself one of Wode Maya’s supporters.

She indicated that around three years ago, she first saw one of his videos about a Kenyan woman who built 200 houses. She was so inspired by the story and his unique and authentic way of telling it that she subsequently liked and subscribed to his channel.

“We gather here because there is one among us who saw our nation and in our people a reflection of his proud Ghanaian heritage, and he made the determination to make an impact,” she said.

Wode Maya took to his Instagram page to express his appreciation of the gesture.

“I’m deeply humbled and overwhelmed with gratitude to Barbados and the entire Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc for honouring me in such a grand and unforgettable way. In my over a decade of creating content and passionately projecting Africa to the world, I have never experienced such a warm, thoughtful, and spectacular gesture.”

To receive this level of recognition from a nation on the other side of the Atlantic – so far from home yet so close in spirit – means more than words can express. Your love, hospitality and appreciation have touched me deeply, and I will forever cherish this incredible moment. Thank you, Barbados, for embracing me like one of your own. This is more than an honour -it’s a reminder that the stories we tell and the bridges we build truly matter. Much love and respect always,” he wrote.

Wode Maya is famed for his revealing and educational video documentaries about people and places across the world.

NIB could not release Wontumi to us because of the crowd – Dr Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) denied him the opportunity to meet detained Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, due to the presence of the crowd at their premises.

He was at the facility with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to see Wontumi and find out how he was doing, but the NIB denied them such an opportunity.

Stating the reason behind NIB’s action, he said, “Unfortunately, we are here, but the NIB feels that the crowd is such that they are not able to bring him here at the moment, and they have to make proper arrangements to bring him so that we can see him,” Dr Bawumia expressed.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi, is being investigated for criminal activities.

He has been accused of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

This information was made known by Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai in a statement posted on his official X account on Thursday, May 29.

He wrote, “Suspect BERNARD ANTWI BOASIAKO, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences (including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering)”.

According to him, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assisting with the probe to recover suspected proceeds from the alleged crime.

“The suspect is also under a second strand of investigation which is part of a larger international organised crime scheme. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assiduously working with our international law enforcement partners on this second strand of criminal investigations,” he added.

The search comes after Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Buah, ordered the immediate revocation of Akonta Mining’s licenses, citing allegations of illegal mining and other violations.

This has contributed to tensions among political factions in the country.

Efforts to satisfy EOCO’s bail conditions, which include a GHs50 million bond with two justified sureties, are allegedly being led by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The NIB premises have been guarded with tight security as several NPP Members of Parliament, senior party officials, and a large number of supporters have gathered at the NIB premises to express their support.

Female artistes aren’t doing enough to win Artiste of the Year award – Ghanaian

A young Ghanaian identified as Reginald Armah has shared his opinion on why female musicians barely win the Artiste of the Year award category at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

Reginald made this known on the “SINCERELY ACCRA” show on YouTube with host Joseph Nti.

Joseph Nti said, “It is very rare that we even have women in the Artiste of the Year conversation, and I am wondering what the problem is.”

“They are not doing enough. They are not really doing enough,” Reginald responded with a face expressing his dissatisfaction with the issue.

In his view, “the last person who actually stood for the women was Ebony. Bro, like you will never go anywhere without hearing an Ebony song, or maybe Ebony has done something. Ebony was everywhere up until she died.”

The late Ebony Reigns won the Female Artist of the Year award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) in 2018.

Gospel musician Diana Hamilton also won the same award in the year 2021.

Musician King Promise emerged as Artiste of the Year at the 26th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) held on May 10, edging out Stonebwoy for the title.

Entertainment pundit and artist manager Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, popularly known as Bullgod, has predicted that Reggae/Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy will not win the TGMA26 Artiste of the Year award.

He made the comment on the United Showbiz after stating that he correctly projected that Stonebwoy would not emerge as the Artiste of the Year Award at the TGMA25.

“Let me even stress it again that you won’t even win the Artist of the Year award next year. It is Black Sheriff’s turn next year. I have said it already,” Bullgod told Empress Gifty.

Meanwhile, Stonebwoy won the Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), marking his tenth win in this category in a row.

  • I have learnt to deal with harmful comment from netizens – Gyakie

I have learnt to deal with harmful comment from netizens – Gyakie

R&B and Afro-Fusion singer, Jackline Acheampong, popularly known as Gyakie, has narrated how she has gained mastery over snubbing harmful comments on the internet.

According to the songbird, she used to overthink some of the hurtful things people wrote to her on social media.

Speaking to Valerie Danso on the GTV Breakfast Show on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Gyakie revealed that it was a struggle for her to let go of these negative comments once she read them.

“When I was climbing to the peak of my career, I realized that comments coming from a bad place really got to me. I’m human, so even though I try not to let them affect me, somehow they do—and I tend to overthink.”

Especially after ‘Forever’ blew up,’ the comments that came in should have applauded her, but unfortunately, they rather made her feel inadequate as a musician.

However, she had to learn the hard way, rise above the pessimism, and ride on optimism.

“After ‘Forever’ blew up, I got so many negative comments,” Gyakie recalled. “People said that was going to be my last big song and that I wouldn’t be able to make another hit. It wasn’t a nice feeling. But I signed up for this, and I’ve had to learn to deal with it.”

At this point in time in her life, Gyakie says she no longer pays attention to any reaction that follows her posts on social media.

She has mastered the courage to protect her mental health as she focuses on making strides in the music industry.

“I don’t have any notifications on my phone until I open the app,” she explained. “I don’t scroll through all the comments or check pages. I just make the post and let it do what it has to do.”

The singer, born Jacqueline Acheampong, added that since 2023, she has become more intentional about her engagements online.

“It makes me feel more like a human being and helps me focus on reality,” she said. “The internet is very addictive. If you let the information on there get into your mind and soul, it can be harmful.”

The ‘Rent Free’ hitmaker has said that despite the height she has attained, sitting in public transport for any trip will not be a challenge for her.

The singer says she is certain that attempting to do so will generate a myriad of conversations online, but she won’t be perturbed.

“I can. Maybe it will be very loud and all, but I don’t mind sitting in a trotro to go somewhere. I will sit in trotro 100%. I think that will be something that will be really good,” she said in an interview on TV3’s The Afternoon Show on Wednesday, May 28.

  • Camidoh gears up for release of new EP ‘Trustn God’

Camidoh gears up for release of new EP ‘Trustn God’

Ghanaian Afro Pop/R&B artiste Raphael Camidoh Kofi Attachie, popularly known as Camidoh, is gearing up to release his new single known as ‘Trustn God’, on July 18.

He has already released two new singles, such as ‘Ayekoo’ and ‘Your Ghost’, as an introduction to his upcoming six-track EP after June.

‘Trustn God’ highlights Camidoh’s experiences through life trials, transformation and a renewed sense of faith.

It is an invitation to listeners embarking on the journey of reflection and hope.

“Ayekoo’ is an uplifting anthem of gratitude and resilience, while ‘Your Ghost’ explores themes of love, loss, and the lingering presence of memory. Together, these tracks reflect Camidoh’s signature style, melding heartfelt storytelling with a genre-bending Afro Pop / R&B sound.”

Camidoh promises fans that his “Trustn God” song will provide them with an expression of faith, healing, and human emotion, resonating deeply with everyone struggling, to be hopeful for better days.

Fans can visit all the streaming platforms and have a listen to the Ayekoo’ and ‘Your Ghost’ songs as they await release of ‘Trustn God.’

Nearly three years have passed since Camidoh captivated audiences with his hit song “Sugarcane.”

Contrary to what one might expect, he feels no pressure to produce another chart-topping hit.

The artist maintains confidence in his ability to consistently craft exceptional music without the burden of comparison.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz on October 24, 2024, Camidoh articulated his dedication to creating authentic, high-quality songs that resonate with his listeners. He emphasized that he does not need to measure his upcoming releases against his previous successes.

“No, I’ve never really been under pressure to make another song like Sugarcane. I believe I’ve been blessed with an amazing talent and I make amazing music. So, there’s no point in likening Sugarcane to any of my works.

Discussing the challenges within the music industry, Camidoh stressed the need for better communication regarding the value of artists and their contributions.

“I believe that at the right time, my records will get the necessary attention because they are all very beautiful songs. If I were struggling to make music, then I believe I would be feeling that way. What God has blessed me with is a gift so, I’m not being forced to cook another Sugarcane. Not at all,” he stated.

He believes that when audiences recognize and appreciate the significance of an artist, a song, or the act of making music, they will celebrate and respect it more.

“I think our industry needs to be heavy on value communication because I believe when people appreciate and understand the value an artiste or song or the act of making music carries, they will celebrate and cherish it more,” he said.

  • Non-Akan artistes can’t thrive due to high demand for Akan songs by radio stations – Kenny Ice

Non-Akan artistes can’t thrive due to high demand for Akan songs by radio stations – Kenny Ice

One of the Volta Region’s top artists, Keeny Ice, has expressed frustration towards radio stations that reject offers to play songs that are not composed in the Akan language.

The ‘Steeze’ hitmaker shared an awful experience with Doreen Avio and DJ Slim on Daybreak Hitz. He revealed that a radio station told him to his face they cannot play his song because it is composed in the Ewe dialect.

“I went to a radio station and somebody told me, ‘we can’t play an Ewe song. I don’t understand what you say in the song’,” he recounted.

He then asked the question, “When the Twi or Fante or Akan is 70%, and they dominate the industry, how can a Dagbani or Ewe person fight his way into it?” he asked.

This, he said, makes it challenging for songs in not-so-popular local parlances to penetrate the music industry.

He went on to reveal that several up-and-coming musicians in the country have diverted their passion into something else because no one appreciated them enough to recommend them for money-making opportunities.

“Headless YouTuber (Kula) stopped doing music because when he was rapping, he only got compliments for his rap skills, but when there are deals that involve money, it is the afrobeat artists and those that do danceable music that get them,” Kenny Ice revealed.

The rapper has also revealed that he feels snubbed by the Ghanaian music industry, despite his contributions and maintained presence in the Volta Region and beyond.

“I have to do like times ten of the work I have already done. All the top dawgs in the industry know me but the industry has not been fair to me, Kenny Ice,” he said.

Kenny says he currently ranks among the top artists from the Volta Region who possess the ability to attract large crowds to shows solely organized by him.

He has composed songs like ‘Deja Vu’, ‘Sound Check’, ‘May Way’, ‘Hedze’, ‘Steeze’, ‘Aya’, and others.

He officially releases his new EP ‘Ice Cold’ today, May 30.

  • Govt can’t employ all 100,000 unemployed health workers this year – Health Ministry

Govt can’t employ all 100,000 unemployed health workers this year – Health Ministry

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman, has revealed that the ministry is not capable of posting about 100,000 health workers that are currently unemployed this year.

Engaging the media on Thursday, May 29, Mr Goodman bemoaned the continuous training of a large number of individuals seeking to work in the health sector by private institutions despite the limited slots for employment.

He noted that these individuals who have been unemployed for half a decade would be recruited in batches to fill the vacant positions in subsequent years.

“We cannot recruit everybody this year; that is going to be suicidal. We have nearly 100,000 individuals who are currently at home and have not been employed for five years. So, we cannot use a year to recruit all of them.”

“You have various private training institutions that, because they have to run their institution and make a profit to be able to pay teachers, would admit a lot of numbers, churn them out, and tell the Ministry of Health to recruit them.”

“The Ministry is training because there is a requirement for a particular region or so, but they [the private institutions] do not have that. Yet they train them and tell the Ministry of Health to recruit them,” he stated.

This comes after the Parliamentary Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources urged the Ministry of Finance to release funds for the immediate posting of over 2,000 Environmental Health Officer graduates, unposted since 2021, to help tackle the country’s worsening sanitation crisis.

In March 2024, a Coalition of Nurses and Midwives in the Northern Region described the previous government’s failure to post them to various health facilities as depressing.

The graduate unemployed nurses and midwives numbering over 75,000 bemoaned the lack of employment 4 years after completion of school.

The coalition on Friday, March 1, 2024, hit the streets in the region to express their discontent with the government’s failure to provide financial clearance and permanent employment.

The group registered its dissatisfaction primarily with the government and its agencies, specifically the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ministry of Finance (MoF) over the perceived failure of these entities to grant financial clearance and secure permanent employment for more than 75,000 graduate nurses and midwives who have undergone training at various accredited public universities and training colleges.

With regard to posting, the government is keen on sending health workers and teachers to rural areas that have been deprived for years.

President Mahama plans to introduce a 20% allowance for teachers and health workers who accept postings to rural areas.

He announced his intention while seeking power ahead of the 2024 general elections. He noted that the incentive aims to encourage more personnel to serve in rural areas, bridging the development gap between rural and urban communities.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is considering embarking on a series of industrial actions over poor working conditions.

The Health Ministry, in response, has entreated the association to reconsider its decision following engagements with the sector minister, Hon Mintah Akandoh over their challenges.

The ministry, in a statement, further indicated that since taking office, the minister has met with the association’s leadership on five occasions. Although the revised Conditions of Service were initially set to take effect in 2024, their implementation has encountered delays.

The Ministry believes that “using the lives of patients as leverage in the demand for the implementation of a collective bargaining agreement is not the appropriate course of action.”

  • Govt to plant 30 million seedlings in 2025 Edition of Green Ghana Day

Govt to plant 30 million seedlings in 2025 Edition of Green Ghana Day

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has announced that the government is targeting to plant 30 million tree seedlings across the country to commemorate the 2025 edition of Green Ghana Day in June from 6th to 30th.

The ministry shared the information on its Facebook page on May 27, urging the general public to “pick up free seedlings from the Forestry Commission Head Office, Forest Services Division (FSD), Regional and District offices, and other designated points nationwide.

Green Ghana Day, also known as National Tree Planting Day, was introduced in 2021 by the Akufo-Addo-led government as part of a national effort to plant trees and restore Ghana’s forest cover.

The inaugural event was held on June 11, 2021, with an estimated 7 million tree seedlings planted across the country. In 2022, more than 24 million trees were planted, exceeding the 20 million target.

The former Lands Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor revealed that the Field Assessment Report worked on reported that on average, there was 67 percent survival rate in 2021 and 72 percent in 2022. In 2023, Ghana planted 10.7 million trees, with a staggering 81% surviving.

Last year, the Forestry Commission (FC) reported that the Green Ghana Day 2024 surpassed the national target of planting 10 million seedlings, with nearly 14 million seedlings distributed across the country.

The commission noted that 14 regions exceeded their planting targets, with the North East and Greater Accra regions being the only ones that failed to meet their targets.

According to the FC, with a relatively even distribution of 13,875,286 seedlings, the achievement marked a new milestone in the country’s reforestation and environmental sustainability efforts.

As of last year, the previous government reported that 30 million trees are thriving at different growth stages.

The national initiative saw to the planting of seedlings in degraded forest reserves, farms, degraded watershed areas, and within communities, i.e., medians of roads, homes, schools, churches, offices, and recreational grounds/parks.

This included selected timber trees, shade trees, ornamental trees, fruit trees, and multipurpose trees suitable for the climate conditions in the various regions. Examples of seedlings to be planted include eucalyptus, mahogany, ofram, ceiba, emire, wawa, rosewood, teak, cedrela, mansonia, rain trees, terminalia mentalis, royal palm, weeping willow, orchid tree, tree of life, mango, coconut, orange, lemon, indian almond, avocado, cashew, cassia, acacia, milletia, and albizia.

Over the years, approximately GH₵8 million has been spent to support the Green Ghana Day programme, with GH₵2 million disbursed in 2021, GH₵2 million in 2022, GH₵2.5 million in 2023, and GH₵1.5 million in 2024.

The immediate-past Lands Minister revealed that funding for Green Ghana Day is provided by Non-Governmental Organizations as well as Corporate Ghana.

My fans in Japan can’t wait to have me – Gyakie

Ghanaian musician Jacline Acheampong, popularly known as Gyakie, has stated that her fans in Japan are buzzing her phone as they can’t wait for her performance at the maiden edition of the Afro Jam Festival.

Currently, a new single, titled ‘Sankofa’, has been released by Gyakie ahead of her upcoming ‘After Midnight’ album.

Meanwhile, Gyakie has resisted attempts to revisit the ordeal she went through during an attack on her manager during Portugal’s 2023 Afronation festival.

She told Doreen Avio on Daybreak Hitz on Friday, May 23, she had to juggle her emotions, handle the situation, and maintain a positive energy to perform on stage within the same period.

She said since it was a terrible experience, she hesitates to talk about it because it opens wounds that have already been healed.

“I really wish I was able to answer this particular question at the time, because it’s like anytime I have to talk about it, it kind of opens wounds that have already been healed,” she said.

She added, “What happened, and the fact that I actually had a performance on that day, is not something I would wish on anyone. I had to prepare for the stage, and I had to experience all that happened.”

Gyakie further entreated industry players to be more cautious of challenges that are inevitable in their day-to-day engagement.

A video that went viral in July 2023 on social media showed Gyakie’s manager, Electro Mirror, being manhandled by some uniformed security personnel, to the horror of onlookers.

The video, shared by George Britton, featured George’s panicked voice in the background as he reproached the security officers for their actions.

Mirror was seen pinned to the floor while about five security men held him in a chokehold as he gasped for air.

  • Foreign Minister will be summoned to explain brief closure of embassy in Washington DC – Minority

Foreign Minister will be summoned to explain brief closure of embassy in Washington DC – Minority

Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Patricia Appiagyei, has announced that the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, will be summoned to explain the brief closure of Ghana’s embassy in Washington, DC in Parliament.

She describes the action taken by the foreign minister as reckless and diplomatically costly, considering that he failed to consult parliament.

During a media briefing by both caucuses in Parliament on issues programmed to be considered on the floor of the House at the Second Meeting of the First Session of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic on May 28, Honorable Patricia said:

“…the Minority Caucus will initiate efforts to invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to explain his actions regarding the closure of the Embassy.”

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the temporary closure of Ghana’s Embassy in Washington DC earlier this week.

The action followed a corruption scandal discovered by the minister involving one Mr. Fred Kwarteng, a local staff member recruited on August 11, 2017, to work in the embassy’s IT department.

Honourable Ablakwa revealed that according to findings and Mr Kwarteng’s admission, he created an unauthorized link on the embassy’s website which diverted visa and passport applicants to his company, Ghana Travel Consultants (GTC) where he charged extra for multiple services on the blind side of the ministry and kept the entire proceeds in his private account.

His illegal extra charges, which were not approved by the ministry and parliament as required under the Fees and Charges Act ranges from US$29.75 to US$60 per applicant.

“The investigations reveal that he and his collaborators operated this illegal scheme for at least 5 years,” Mr Ablakwa revealed.

Mr Fred Kwarteng has been fired, and his conduct has been reported to the Attorney-General for possible prosecution and retrieval of funds obtained through fraudulent schemes.

The Auditor-General has been invited to conduct forensic examination of all transactions and to determine the total cost of this fraudulent scheme.

Also, all Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff posted to the Washington embassy have been recalled home with immediate effect.

The embassy’s IT department has been promptly dissolved, and all locally recruited staff at the embassy have been suspended.

The Foreign Minister apologised for “any inconvenience these radical measures may cause visa and passport applicants”.

Ghana’s Embassy in Washington DC will be reopened today, May 29, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A team of seasoned diplomats led by an astute diplomat has been tasked to run the mission.

Meanwhile, the Majority Caucus has backed the sector minister for his decision to close the embassy in question.

Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament, Hon. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, who engaged the media, noted that the closure was a necessary step to address “frontline activities and corrupt practices.”

“The reasons for which the closure became necessary are known to all of us. The Minister has followed information from the Embassy concerning frontline activities, corrupt practices, and made that decision to close the Embassy to ensure that we reset activities… to the highest professional levels,” he said.

I did not believe Priscilla Ojo was a virgin when I met her – Juma jux

Tanzanian singer, Juma Jux, has revealed that he could not believe his newly wedded wife, Priscilla Ojo, was still a virgin when he first met her.

According to the singer, he had to examine Priscilla to believe that she had no sexual activity, despite her past dating records.

“I met my wife as a virgin.  The first time she told me she was still a virgin, I didn’t believe her because I knew she had dated other men before and possibly must have had an entanglement with them.  So I asked her if she was sure, and she said 100% sure. When I assessed her, I noticed she was still a virgin,” he said on Instagram.

He then decided to protect Priscilla’s virginity till he got married to her on April 19.

“… and I told her; we shall keep this virginity till marriage.  8 months after, we are now married and ready to explore,” Juma stated.

As it stands now, Juma Jux and Priscilla Ojo are a couple legitimately exploring their sex life.

The duo celebrated their white wedding in a dazzling ceremony held on Wednesday, May 28, at the Superdome in Masaki, Dar es Salaam.

The glamorous event marked the culmination of a cross-continental love story that has captured the imagination of fans from Lagos to Dar, blending star power, culture, and music in a unique personal celebration of love.

The bride, daughter of Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo, walked down the aisle on Wednesday in a show-stopping gown by Nigerian designer Mazelle Bridal.

Jux complemented her perfectly in a custom white tuxedo by T.I Nathan, another Nigerian designer, underlining the fusion of their cultures that has defined their union from the start.

This Tanzanian white wedding comes after a traditional Tanzanian wedding that took place in February and a traditional Yoruba ceremony held in Lagos in April. Both events featured rich Nigerian and Tanzanian customs and flair.

Before the Yoruba traditional ceremony that took place in April, Juma Jux proposed to Priscilla Ajoke at a lavish event; his proposal was underscored by a band of violinists.

“I’m proposing to you a second time, but this time in front of your family and dearest friends and with a ring twice the size,” Juz said at the time. “I love you with everything in me and I can’t wait to spend forever with you my love.”

  • “Business challenges in Ghana can be very depressing” – KSM

“Business challenges in Ghana can be very depressing” – KSM

Veteran Ghanaian comedian and filmmaker, Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM), has expressed frustration about the challenges Ghanaian businesses face due to the demands of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

According to him, businesses attract penalties not because they are doing anything wrong, but GRA just has a way of finding gaps anyhow possible.

“Business challenges in Ghana can be very depressing. GRA will come today, and they will deal with you. Then VAT comes and they will deal with you. They will ask you questions, you will answer the best you can, but they will still find things that you could have done and didn’t do,” he lamented.

He also emphasized the difficulties faced by young people in the country, which inconveniences them in their bid to set up businesses in the country.

“Young people want to start businesses, but the system doesn’t always support them. There should be grants or consumer support to help them establish themselves. Once they succeed, they will contribute to the economy through taxes and create jobs,” he said.

KSM has also voiced concerns over the persistent challenges stifling Ghana’s economic progress, attributing them to nepotism, poor leadership, and misplaced priorities.

In a YouTube discussion, KSM lamented that the collapse of state-owned enterprises was largely due to prioritizing personal connections over competence, as well as the nation’s tendency to emphasize religion over economic development. He noted that these detrimental practices continue to hinder Ghana’s growth.

Reflecting on decisions made during the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era in the late 20th century, he explained that the government faced a critical choice: either restructure state-owned enterprises or privatize them. Ultimately, Ghana opted for privatization, selling off numerous factories and state organizations.

“There were all these state organizations, but they were not generating enough revenue. At that point, Ghana had two choices: either re-engineer the thinking and recalibrate the agenda of these institutions by appointing competent managers, or sell them off to the private sector. We chose to sell them off.

“Incidentally, most of the factories and things that we sold didn’t go into the private sector per se, but mostly into the hands of pastors who established chapels. They became churches instead of factories. The factories that used to employ people are no longer there. In place of that are churches,” KSM explained.

He emphasized that the lack of job opportunities has left many young people unemployed, forcing them to turn to religious gatherings instead of actively seeking work.

“There are no longer jobs for the youth, but there are big churches and they have great programs. Monday is worship night, and Tuesday is worship congregation. Friday is Friday night service. All the youth who have been left unemployed, instead of looking for work, will go to the church and then pray for work,” he stated.

  • “Let’s not wait for Accra to define our stories” –  Dzifa Gomashie to traditional rulers

“Let’s not wait for Accra to define our stories” –  Dzifa Gomashie to traditional rulers

Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has urged traditional rulers and district assemblies to own their unique cultures, histories, and attractions instead of relying on the capital city, Accra, and central authorities to determine how their stories are told.

She urged them to position themselves for partnerships and investment, especially in eco-tourism and sustainable tourism infrastructure that strategically launches them into the limelight.

“Let’s not wait for Accra to define our stories. Each district, each village, holds a key to Ghana’s tourism future,” she said, while embarking on a three-day working tour of the Volta Region.

She explained that her administration is poised to change the approach to tourism development.

Instead of the usual way of making decisions solely by the officials at the top, local people and authorities will now be involved in the planning and promotion of tourism.

“We are not just here to assess; we are here to listen and co-create solutions. Real tourism transformation begins in the communities,” Honourable Gomashie stated during a visit to the Volta Regional Coordinating Council in Ho.

She also highlighted cultural dances, describing them as “tourism gold” because they can be packaged to attract tourists as well as generate income for the greater good.

“Local dances like Atsiagbekor and Agbadza, our crafts and festivals, are not just traditions—they are tourism gold. But we must present them in ways that attract and educate visitors,” she explained.

Meanwhile, the minister has pledged to focus on developing key tourist sites, including Mole National Park in the Savannah Region.

During her vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 22, she stressed the importance of strategic investments to make major tourist destinations more attractive.

“I agree with you that Mole, for years, has been one of the most frequently visited sites. What it needs is more investment. Our country must focus on giving more to this sector to attract the required resources. I will be pushing for this agenda,” she said.

Additionally, Honourable Gomashie mentioned the Black Star Experience model, a framework aimed at empowering district, municipal, and metropolitan assemblies to initiate projects in arts, tourism, and culture, thereby stimulating local economies.

As the Member of Parliament for Ketu South and a Queen Mother in the Aflao Traditional Area, she reaffirmed her commitment to leveraging tourism, culture, and creative arts as vital contributors to Ghana’s economic transformation.

  • I don’t mind sitting in ‘trotro’ for a trip – Gyakie

I don’t mind sitting in ‘trotro’ for a trip – Gyakie

Ghanaian R&B Afro-fusion singer Jackline Acheampong, popularly known as Gyakie, has said that despite the height she has attained, sitting in public transport for any trip will not be a challenge for her.

The singer says she is certain that attempting to do so will generate a myriad of conversations online, but she won’t be perturbed.

“I can. Maybe it will be very loud and all, but I don’t mind sitting in a trotro to go somewhere. I will sit in trotro 100%. I think that will be something that will be really good,” she said in an interview on TV3’s The Afternoon Show, on Wednesday, May 28.

On a separate media platform, the “Rent Free” hitmaker stated that she no longer entertains baseless criticisms on social media.

According to her, she is open to receiving feedback that would contribute to her growth as a musician; however, she’ll pick and choose what comment gets her attention.

The songbird is of the belief that she cannot please everyone all the time, but for her fans, she will go all out to excite them.

“I just learn to appreciate what I feel is right because one person will say ‘I don’t like the way your hair is always shorter’, another person will say ‘I don’t like the way your hair is long’. So it’s like what do you want me to do? I am going to do what I feel is right or what I feel my audience is going to enjoy.”

“Because whatever I put out is what is gathering the people that are in my market. In the beginning, I was really allowing a lot of the bad criticism to get to me but right now I just drop the music and do exactly what I have been brought on earth to do,” she said.

Despite her decision, Gyakie says she remains very active on social media but has resolved not to read comments.

She said comment sections used to ruin her mood for an entire week, even if she trusts herself not to be perturbed by them.

  • Cedi appreciation is wasting all my dollar reserves – Kuami Eugene ‘cries out’

Cedi appreciation is wasting all my dollar reserves – Kuami Eugene ‘cries out’

Ghanaian highlife artiste, Kuami Eugene, has disclosed that he is losing value on the US dollars he has saved because the cedi is appreciating.

He jovially took to social media to cry out to the President, urging him to slow down the cedi’s appreciation.

“We beg Pres. John Mahama for slow down small , my dollar reserves all dey go waste,” he wrote.

Similarly, renowned Kumawood actor Kwaku Manu expressed excitement over the recent appreciation of the cedi.

According to the actor, this will affect several travelers, including himself; however, the strengthening of the Ghana cedi is ultimately good news for Ghanaian traders.

He praised President John Mahama for his hard work in less than a year since he came into power.

“One thing I want to say is that if we put politics aside, President John Mahama is really working since he came back to power. He is really working hard. Whenever I travel abroad, I normally return to Ghana to change some dollars I get over here. Since I came here, I have always checked the dollar”.

“I know it will affect me when I come back home, but I am happy. I am happy because if you are in Ghana and if you want to buy a ticket to China, the USA, or other countries, you will struggle. Since the dollar has come down, it will help many travelers, especially the traders,” he said in a video he shared on Instagram.

Ghana’s local currency, the cedi, continues its upward momentum on the interbank market, registering notable gains against major trading currencies, particularly the US dollar.

As of Friday, May 26, the average interbank rates used by commercial banks for transactions at the close of business showed the US dollar buying at GH₵10.39 and selling at GH₵10.40.

The British pound is buying at GH₵14.09 and selling at GH₵14.11. The euro is currently being bought at GH₵11.82 and sold at GH₵11.83.

He has also appealed to President John Mahama to pass a law that prohibits citizens from hurling insults at prominent persons such as the president, Asantehene, and others in the country.

He asserts that such individuals at least deserve a one-year jail term to serve as a deterrent to others who exhibit such bad manners online.

    Dada Boat Remix reportedly arrested

A secret FBI operation has allegedly led to the arrest of Ghana’s nightlife mogul and alleged crypto kingpin, Nana Kojo Boateng, popularly known as Dada Joe Remix, with possible extradition to the United States of America (U.S.A).

Sources say he was “scooped up Rambo-style,” over his alleged involvement in fraudulent financial activities.

Even though people have known him as a big player in the oil and gas business, rumors have it that he might have been involved in shady activities behind the scenes.

Panic has reportedly gripped Accra’s elite social circles since the news broke.

Some prominent figures allegedly involved in cryptocurrency, forex trading, and high-end real estate have also allegedly gone into hiding.

Dada Joe Remix could stand trial and face significant legal consequences if convicted.

Official details regarding his arrest and the nature of the charges are yet to be released.

It will be recalled that in 2022, the Nigerian social media influencer, Ramon Abbas, who called himself Ray Hushpuppi and flaunted a lavish lifestyle supported by laundering millions of dollars was sentenced in Los Angeles to more than 11 years in federal prison.

Ramon Abbas, 40, was also ordered by a federal judge to pay $1.7m in restitution to two fraud victims, according to a statement from the United States Department of Justice.

Abbas was “one of the most prolific money launderers in the world,” Don Alway, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, said in the statement.

Prosecutors said Abbas and a Canadian man laundered money from various online crimes, including bank cyberheists and business email compromise, or BEC, a prolific crime in which crooks hack into email accounts, pretend to be someone they’re not, and fool victims into wiring money where it doesn’t belong.

Abbas had more than two million Instagram followers before he was arrested in 2020 in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

His social media posts showed him living a life of luxury, complete with private jets, ultra-expensive cars, and high-end clothes and watches.

“I hope someday I will be inspiring more young people to join me on this path,” read one Instagram post by Abbas, who pleaded guilty in April 2021 to one count of conspiracy to engage in money laundering.

Congratulations! – Van Vicker tells President Mahama on cedi appreciation

Ghanaian actor, Van Vicker, has congratulated President John Dramani Mahama following the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

“Mr. President, I must congratulate you on the strengthening of the Ghana cedis on the world market. Ayekoo,” he wrote on Facebook, May 28.

The actor has also shared his opinion on what he considers as factors that contibuted to the appreciation of the cedi.

“The true reason could be a consolidation of two or more of – whatever- theories, but be that as it may, the fact remains that the Ghana Cedis is approximately ghc11 to $1 TODAY. It was approximately 17ghc to $1 few months ago.”

Van Vicker emphasized that his comment has nothing to do with politics.

“This is not a political statement. It is an acknowledgement of a good job done so far. Call a spade a spade. Give credit to whom credit is due,” he indicated.

He has shared a different view on the probability that the appreciation may not be sustained for a long time.

“I think the current cedis orbit is remarkable for Ghana as a country and I am optimistic it’s sustainable. Your Excellency JM, if you can take us back to 2007, heerrrh like e go be ‘kerker’.”

Kumawood actor, Kwaku Manu has also expressed excitement over the recent appreciation of the cedi, currently trading at GHS10.40 to a dollar.

According to the actor, this will affect several travelers, including himself; however, the strengthening of the Ghana cedi is ultimately good news for Ghanaian traders.

He praised President John Mahama for his hard work in less than a year since he came into power.

Project good news if you want your platform to do well – Salinko to bloggers

Ghanaian Kumawood actor, Abraham Kofi Davis, popularly known as Salinko, has advised bloggers to propagate the truth if they want to prosper.

Salinko’s remark follows his dissatisfaction with some Ghanaian bloggers reporting false news about him.

In an Instagram post to address the matter, he warned the bloggers, saying:

“Those bloggers fond of projecting false should be very careful. If you tarnish my image to get views on your channel, I promise after two months it will collapse… If you want your platform to be acknowledged and respected by people, project good news.”

“The bloggers who are known for spreading false news should stop it. If I were you, I would delete such news. You can’t trade on bad news… If you want to prosper,” he stated.

In February 2024, there were false reports about popular Kumawood actress, Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu.

But she shared a post on social media to dispel the false reports, clarifying that she was enjoying her life overseas.

Veteran Ghanaian actor and stand-up comedian Kofi Adu, popularly known as Agya Koo, was also reported dead in a motor accident in 2020.

Reacting to the news, Agya Koo denied the reports, branding them a mere hoax.

“You know, some of our people like to ride on famous people to trend,” he revealed.

In the case of Agya Koo, he said the news traveled so fast that his comrades abroad contacted him to confirm if he was alive.

“I’ve received over 500 calls, including international calls, and they keep asking if I have was involved in an accident. I’m in my room, and I haven’t been involved in any sort of accident,” he added.

NFA on a mission to revive love for Ghanaian cinema – James Gardiner

Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), James Gardiner, has said that the authority is on a mission to revive the interest of Ghanaians in cinemas.

“We are in the realm of affairs to promote the kind of quality stuff that we know people will like to consume so that it brings back that whole excitement about going to the cinema and watching Ghanaian-produced films,” he shared in an interview on the Girls Aloud Podcast.

He adds that the film industry lacks the requisite support, which has hindered its progress for a long time.

He is, however, certain that the new set of NFA executives will invest more resources to revive the industry.

“We know it is going to be a very hard battle, but it’s going to go a long way in restoring the way the industry used to be,” James Gardiner added.

Meanwhile, NFA has joined the Screenwriters Guild of Ghana (SWGG) and Producers Guild of Ghana (PGG) in a meeting intended to establish global standards for Ghanaian filmmaking and build a sustainable, competitive film industry.

In a bid to strengthen copyright laws and foster robust, collaborative relationships with the country’s creative guilds, the Authority reiterated its commitment to setting statutory frameworks that ensure Ghanaian storytelling in films meets international standards.

NFA highlighted ongoing efforts to secure grants for filmmakers and revealed that discussions are underway with key stakeholders to facilitate smoother access for foreign productions to Ghanaian crew, equipment, and logistics.

Stakeholders are also preparing for the upcoming National Film Dialogue on 30th July, where pressing topics such as insurance for equipment and logistics will be addressed.

Community representatives affiliated with the film industry will also participate, offering input and exploring solutions to current challenges.

During the meeting, the SWGG and PGG emphasised the importance of recognising all sectors that interact with film production and assisting them in integrating effectively into the evolving industry landscape.

The guilds also called for enhanced incentives for foreign productions and guaranteed inclusion and fair treatment of Ghanaian crew members.

“This is not just about film—it’s about creating a legacy of professionalism and pride,” said James Gardiner, Deputy Executive Secretary of the NFA. “When we raise the bar for storytelling, we raise the profile of Ghana itself.”

I have evidence to back infidelity claims against Empress Gifty – Agradaa

Controversial Televangelist, Patricia Asieduwaa, popularly known as Agradaa, says she has proof to back her allegations that Empress Gifty is not faithful to her husband, Hopeson Adorye.

Agradaa’s remark comes after Empress Gifty dragged her to court for defamation on social media.

Agradaa has appeared once in court following the suit, however, her husband threw away the writ of summons when they were served at the premises of the court.

According to her, every single claim she has made against the gospel artiste has available evidence, and she will duly present it in court.

“I know the law very well. It demands that if you make an allegation, you must be able to prove it. And I will prove it in court. The evidence I will present will end your marriage. If I couldn’t prove it, I wouldn’t have made the claim. I am telling you the truth—Hopeson Adorye, it will shock you,” the televangelist confidently expressed.

Empress Gifty filed a GHS 20 million defamation lawsuit against Agradaa on May 20th at the Tema High Court for allegedly making defamatory statements against her.

In response, Agradaa took to social media to mock the lawsuit, saying, “Any idiot can go to court.”

Empress Gifty’s statement of claim has made four claims, including a sum of GH¢20,000,000 for damages for slander and libel.

She has also made a request of the court for a perpetual injunction against the former fetish priestess to restrain Agradaa, “her servants, agents, privies, and assigns howsoever from publication of such words or any of them or similar words to that effect.”

Adding that “an order be made for the defendant to pull down all videos containing the defamatory words of the plaintiff from all her social media platforms” as well as “costs, including lawyers’ professional fees.”

The gospel musician however, wants Nana Agradaa to delete all videos and audios in which she allegedly made the defamatory comments.

She is asking the court to force Agradaa to take down these materials from every social media platform where they were posted, on Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, or any other platform.

Lastly, Empress Gifty is asking that Nana Agradaa is made to pay for all the costs related to the lawsuit.

This includes paying her lawyer’s fees and any other legal expenses she has incurred while seeking justice.

Diddy plotted to kill Kid Cudi over Cassie – Ex-employee testifies

Capricorn Clark, a former employee of Sean Diddy Combs, having worked for more than a decade, has told the court that Diddy broke into rapper Kid Cudi’s home in a plot to kill his rival for the love of Cassie.

According to her, the defendant, Diddy, and a security guard showed up in her apartment in 2011 and forced her to drive with them to Kid Cudi’s home.

She recalled Mr Combs saying, “Get dressed. We are going to kill this [explesive].” He also told the court Diddy had threatened to kill her on her very first day working for him.

The defendant has pleaded not guilty to rackteering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution.

Rapper Kid Cudi’s incident was initially discussed in the trial last week when he took the stand to testify against Mr Combs.

He provided details of what lay between him and Diddy’s ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, an alleged break-in at his Los Angeles home, and an occurrence that involved his Porsche – damaged by a Molotov cocktail, a hand-thrown incendiary weapon consisting of a frangible container filled with flammable substances and equipped with a fuse.

An incident he believes was orchestrated by Mr Combs.

Diddy is likely to end up in jail for life, considering the charges being leveled against him.

Prosecutors have charged Combs with racketeering, alleging that he operated a criminal enterprise that relied on violence, intimidation, and illegal activity to exert control.

A court document also mentions events called “Freak Offs,” where victims were allegedly drugged and forced into long sexual encounters that could go on for days.

He is also accused of sex trafficking, with claims that he transported or coerced individuals into sexual exploitation across state lines.

In a Facebook post sighted by The Independent Ghana, the musician said he does not support crim but has rather made contributions that has supported the police in cambating crime.

“You say you be street but when we talk about streets too you don’t get it .. If it wasn’t shatta wale like crime rate in Ghana go be gidigidi. We sacrificed with Godfathers that brought us up to put most of the youths out of crime…”

“We don’t support crime, we combat and eradicate crime like the Police sameway. Many of you keep missing the shots when shatta talks and it’s because you deh dark room for many years lol,” he wrote.

Shatta Wale was in the news a month ago for hosting Nigerian TikTok influencer, Habeeb Hanzat, popularly known as Peller.

He visited Nima with the online streamer in the late hours of Friday, April 11.

The visit aimed to introduce Peller to Shatta Wale’s fans.

They were accompanied by a police escort in a convoy and was greeted by a massive crowd.

But Shatta faced criticisms online for treating Peller to a grand welcome due to their belief that the TikToker is undeserving of such recognition.

They have insisted that A-list Nigerian celebrities would not extend the same treatment to Ghanaian.

Shatta however, did not respond to any of such criticisms.

Felicia Osei discloses how much she charges to run promotional videos

Ghanaian content creator, Felicia Osei has disclosed that she takes GH¢5,000.00 and more to run promotional reels on social media for clients.

According to her, even though she is making money, her charges are not too expensive to pay.

“Approximately. I’m not giving you the exact amount, but if you approach me as a client, that’s the ballpark figure, maybe GH¢5,000.We are making money, but not crazy sums. I don’t charge gargantuan amounts; I don’t do outrageous pricing,” she revealed in an interview on 3FM.

Felicia explained that the price for running adverts with products does not match the amount she takes for those without products.

In a separate matter, Felicia Osei was stopped from entering the auditorium for the Telecel Ghana Music Award (TGMA) 2025 event despite securing a ticket for entry.

In a video she shared on TikTok, she revealed that, due to a ticket mishap, she could not enter the Accra International Conference Centre auditorium to partake in the glamorous event.

According to her the QR code on her ticket was rejected and rthe reason was because someone had already gone ahead of her to use it.

Efia Odo dispels dating rumour with Akabenezer

Ghanaian socialite, Efia Odo, has publicly trashed rumours that she is involved in a romantic relationship with comic actor, Akabenezer.

She clarified that such a rumor is baseless and untrue and should be treated as such.

“I only acted with Akabenezer, and that’s all. Most of you are stupid and not wise, so you go around spreading falsehoods. You people lack understanding, so when you pray, ask God for understanding,” she said in Twi on Instagram.

“In this country, I have publicly shown only one guy that I’ve dated. So which other celebrity have you seen me with?” she questioned.

To avoid similar rumors, Efia Odo came out to say that she is unable to flood social media expressing support for her music idol, Black Sherif, publicly.

According to her, she wants to avoid any drama, as Ghanaians will be quick to say she has a romantic relationship with the musician.

In a recent live session with her fans on social media, Efia Odo said, “I’m one of Blacko’s biggest fans. But I don’t like to promote it because of Ghanaians and their foolishness. You begin promoting someone’s songs, and they start saying all sorts of things about you two.”

Efia Odo’s comment seems to be emerging from her past experiences with artists like Kwesi Arthur and King Promise.

She previously championed Kwesi Arthur’s music, often sharing his work and making appearances at his shows.

But that connection with Kwesi fueled widespread rumours of a romantic relationship between the duo. The rumours further attracted intense trolls from netizens.

Efia Odo encountered the same situation when she publicly expressed admiration for musician King Promise ahead of the 2024 Ghana Telecel Music Awards, which for the second time led to speculations and criticisms, especially after King Promise missed out on the Artiste of the Year title.

  • Life doesn’t always bring you victories, sometimes lessons – MzGee tells fans

Life doesn’t always bring you victories, sometimes lessons – MzGee tells fans

Ghanaian broadcaster MzGee has shared her perspective on life’s challenges and how she navigates them.

“Sometimes you need to fail so you can revisit your notes, look at where you went wrong and then come back so hard,” she said.

Commenting on other matters, MzGee, opened up about her deeply personal experience with motherhood, revealing the emotional and physical challenges she faced during and after childbirth.

“Motherhood is a big deal,” she reflected with a voice thick with emotion. “When you go through it, you understand. If you don’t respect your mother, if you speak to her anyhow—ah, you will regret it.”

The media personality’s journey into motherhood was not easy. While her pregnancy was complicated, it was the postpartum period that truly tested her strength. After giving birth, MzGee’s health took a frightening turn. Her blood pressure remained dangerously high, requiring constant monitoring. The ordeal left her in a vulnerable state, and she found herself praying for her safety.

“I was on the altar. I was praying because, at that point, I became scared for my own life,” she shared on her show, Gee O’clock.

Despite her health struggles, the exhaustion of caring for her newborn added another layer of difficulty. It was during this period that MzGee leaned heavily on her support system, especially her friend Ann Marie, who stayed by her side to help with the baby.

“I was physically drained, but it was my support network that gave me the strength to push through,” MzGee said, emphasizing the importance of having people who care during tough times.

Her experience has led to a newfound respect for the complexities of motherhood. “When you go through it, you truly understand the strength it takes to be a mother,” she explained. “Motherhood is not just about giving birth; it’s about surviving the emotional, physical, and mental toll it takes on you.”

This profound journey has reshaped MzGee’s perspective, urging a deeper empathy for mothers everywhere and a call for more appreciation of their struggles.
