Ukraine war: Bakhmut defenders plea for Western tanks

As the UK and other European nations prepare to send tanks to Ukraine to help it liberate more territory from Russia, our correspondent Andrew Harding has been to visit members of a front-line Ukrainian tank unit already engaging Russian forces near the fiercely contested towns of Bakhmut and Soledar.

The explosions come every few seconds, sometimes in rapid clusters of six or more short blasts, sometimes deep and long and rib-cage-rattling, thundering across the snow-speckled hills that stretch along the front lines close to Bakhmut and Soledar.

Then come the distant booms, the shorter punch of a mortar round blasting off on the roadside, and, occasionally, the bone-chilling, fizzing whoosh of an incoming artillery shell that sends us diving for cover on the frozen fields.

This is the daily, constant, percussive chorus of war in the Donbas, where Ukrainian and Russian artillery, rocket and tank crews are slugging it out, trading blows in a fierce, but largely inconclusive struggle to break a months-long deadlock.

“We have a target,” said Roman, a Ukrainian tank unit commander, suddenly pulling off his gloves, clambering up onto the slippery, snow-covered turret of a dark green T-72 tank, and swinging open a heavy steel hatch.

Another crew member, Vlad, scrambled out of a nearby fox hole, where he had been warming his grimy hands over a fresh fire, to help out.

Seconds later, a skull-shaking explosion echoed across the valley and towards Bakhmut, as a US-supplied tank shell tore out of the gun barrel with a flash of orange, heading towards Russian positions on the opposite hillside.

“T-72s are old tanks – this one’s the same age as me,” said Bogdan, a 55-year-old Ukrainian volunteer, turning to pat the huge, squat, Soviet-era machine behind him. “I used to drive one of these nearly 40 years ago – I can’t believe I’m doing it again. But it works. It does the job.”

“But a Leopard would be better,” said Volodymr, another member of their three-man crew, with a low chuckle.

Plans to send German-made Leopard tanks and UK Challengers to the front lines here in the Donbas have been greeted with visible excitement by Ukrainian forces, who have been taking heavy casualties in recent weeks, around Bakhmut, and, more particularly, during the ferocious struggle for the nearby town of Soledar.

“There were very heavy losses. It’s very pitiful. It’s hard,” said Danylo, an officer in charge of repairing tanks for the 24th Mechanised Brigade. He said the current deadlock would not be broken unless foreign tanks arrived in significant numbers.

“Yes, we’ll be stuck here. We need these [Western tanks] to stop Russia’s aggression. With infantry, covered by tanks, we’ll win for sure,” he said.

“Leopards, Challengers, Abrams – any foreign tank is good for us! I think we need at least 300. And we need them now!” said Bogdan.

The Ukrainians all acknowledged that Russia had more modern tanks but were scathing about their tactics.

“The Russian tanks are a bit better than ours. They’re fully modernised. But mostly the Russians are strong because they push forwards en masse, advancing over the bodies of their own soldiers. Our commanders care more about the lives of their crews, so we try to destroy [the enemy] while losing as few of our own men as possible,” said Bogdan.

A more senior company commander in the 24th Brigade, with the code name Khan, took us to a rear position, past fresh trenches being dug in the fields by specialised machines, where several tanks were hidden under camouflage nets in a wooded area.

“These T-72s have proved effective in winter conditions. But they’re old, and not really suited for modern warfare. These days it’s all about drones and the latest technology.” Khan said he believed it would take very little time for his crews to adapt to more modern European equipment.

“If you’re a tank driver you’re already someone of above-average intelligence. They’ll be able to learn and adapt quickly,” he said.

Suddenly, an incoming Russian artillery shell landed several hundred metres away. Seconds later, another landed closer, and then closer still, sending soldiers and journalists diving for cover.

The war in Ukraine has, in many ways, been a distinctly old-fashioned conflict, based on attrition, on devastating artillery strikes, and on dug-in positions reminiscent of the trenches of World War One. But the war has also revealed the limitation of tanks – most clearly in the first weeks of the conflict when nimble Ukrainian infantry destroyed many huge Russian armoured columns with shoulder-launched rockets.

“In the old days, it was all about tanks. Now it’s about these new rocket systems,” said Volodymr. But the coming months could yet see Western tanks – if deployed quickly, and in large numbers – play a decisive role.

  • It’s risky to hand over Nigeria to leader of failed party – Atiku Abubakar

It’s risky to hand over Nigeria to leader of failed party – Atiku Abubakar

The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee for president, Atiku Abubakar, has stated that Nigerians should not trust their future to his primary opponents Peter Obi and Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking at the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG) Presidential Dialogue on the Economy in Lagos on Monday, Atiku said he had a good understanding of the challenges bedeviling Nigeria.

Atiku described Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party, as a greenhorn and alleged that the APC-led government where Bola Tinubu is presidential candidate brought Nigerians to “this sorry situation,” Daily Trust reports.

He said, “Experience is important and we must avoid the mistakes of the recent past. It is too risky for Nigerians to hand over their future to a green horn or to the National Leader of the very party that brought us to this sorry situation.

“This is election season. So, you will see and hear from snake-oil salespeople, false prophets and purveyors of false hope and misleading statistics. There is, therefore, need for caution.

“We must also remember that we cannot trust the doctor that poisoned and continues to poison the patient to be the one who provides the curative treatment. The stakes are too high, so we must get it right. This may well be our last chance to do so.

“The Nigerian economy is barely growing. Per capita income, a measure of citizens’ well-being, has progressively fallen since 2015 because of declining output and a fast-growing population. Our people are worse-off today than they were in 2015.

“The oil and gas sector, which is the country’s main foreign exchange earner has declined for most of the period since 2014. For many economic sectors and for the ordinary citizens it still feels like we are in a recession.

“Under the current administration our people are not working. More than 23 million people are out of jobs. In just 5 years between 2015 and 2020, the number of fully employed people dropped by 54%, from 68 million to 31 million people. This is frightening in a country of 200 million people.

“And the majority of the unemployed are young men and women, who lack not only the means to survive but any hope for the future. The number of unemployed youths increased by 9 million from 4 million in 2015 to 13 million in 2020.

“High youth unemployment and limited employment opportunities pose serious economic and security challenges. It is, therefore, an urgent matter to ensure that there are enough jobs for Nigeria’s youth. More Nigerians are poorer and more miserable today than in 2015.”

  • How China obtains American technology secrets covertly

How China obtains American technology secrets covertly

An innocent-looking photo ultimately led to Zheng Xiaoqing’s demise as a former employee of energy giant General Electric Power.

According to a Department of Justice (DOJ) indictment, the US citizen hid confidential files stolen from his employers in the binary code of a digital photograph of a sunset, which Mr Zheng then mailed to himself.

It was a technique called steganography, a means of hiding a data file within the code of another data file. Mr Zheng utilised it on multiple occasions to take sensitive files from GE.

GE is a multinational conglomerate known for its work in the healthcare, energy and aerospace sectors, making everything from refrigerators to aircraft engines.

The information Zheng stole was related to the design and manufacture of gas and steam turbines, including turbine blades and turbine seals. Considered to be worth millions, it was sent to his accomplice in China. It would ultimately benefit the Chinese government, as well as China-based companies and universities.

Zheng was sentenced to two years in prison earlier this month. It is the latest in a series of similar cases prosecuted by US authorities. In November Chinese national Xu Yanjun, said to be a career spy, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for plotting to steal trade secrets from several US aviation and aerospace companies – including GE.

It is part of a broader struggle as China strives to gain technological knowhow to power its economy and its challenge to the geopolitical order, while the US does its best to prevent a serious competitor to American power from emerging.

The theft of trade secrets is attractive because it allows countries to “leapfrog up global value chains relatively quickly – and without the costs, both in terms of time and money, of relying completely on indigenous capabilities”, Nick Marro of the Economist Intelligence Unit told the BBC.

Last July FBI director Christopher Wray told a gathering of business leaders and academics in London that China aimed to “ransack” the intellectual property of Western companies so it can speed up its own industrial development and eventually dominate key industries.

He warned that it was snooping on companies everywhere “from big cities to small towns – from Fortune 100s to start-ups, folks that focus on everything from aviation, to AI, to pharma”.

At the time, China’s then foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Mr Wray was “smearing China” and had a “Cold War mentality”.

‘China seeks to topple our status’

In the DOJ statement on Zheng, the FBI’s Alan Kohler Jr said China was targeting “American ingenuity” and seeking to “topple our status” as global leader.

Zheng was an engineer specialising in turbine sealing technology and worked on various leakage containment technologies in steam turbine engineering. Such seals optimise turbine performance “whether by increasing power or efficiency or extending the usable life of the engine”, the DOJ said.

Gas turbines that power aircraft are central to the development of China’s aviation industry.

Aerospace and aviation equipment are among 10 sectors that the Chinese authorities are targeting for rapid development to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign technology and eventually surpass it.

But Chinese industrial espionage is targeting a wide range of other sectors too.

According to Ray Wang, founder and CEO of Silicon Valley-based consultancy Constellation Research, they include pharmaceutical development and nanotechnology – engineering and technology conducted at the nanoscale for use in areas such as medicine, textiles and fabrics and automobiles. A nanometre is a billionth of a meter.

It also includes pharmaceuticals, bioengineering – mimicking biological processes for purposes such as the development of biocompatible prostheses and regenerative tissue growth.

Mr Wang cited an anecdote by a former head of research and development for a Fortune 100 company, who told him that “the person he entrusted the most” – someone so close that their children grew up together – was eventually found to be on the payroll of the Chinese Communist Party.

“He kindly explained to me that the spies are everywhere,” he said.

    Shanghai, Sept 2022
Image caption,China needs technological knowhow to power its economy and its challenge to the geopolitical order

In the past industrial espionage from countries such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore was a concern, Mr Marro said. However once indigenous firms emerge as innovative market leaders in their own right – and so start to want to protect their own intellectual property – then their governments start passing legislation to take the issue more seriously.

“As Chinese firms have become more innovative over the past decade, we’ve seen a marked strengthening of domestic intellectual property rights protection in tandem,” Mr Marro said.

China has also gained expertise by making foreign companies hand over technology under joint venture agreements in exchange for access to the Chinese market. Despite complaints the Chinese government has always denied accusations of coercion.

    Hacking deal a ‘joke’

There have been attempts to rein in hacking specifically.

In 2015 the US and China struck a deal in which both sides pledged not to carry out “cyber-enabled theft of intellectual property, including trade secrets or other confidential business information for commercial advantage”.

By the following year, the US National Security Agency had accused the Chinese of violating the agreement, although it did acknowledge that the quantity of attempts to hack government and corporate data had dropped “dramatically”.

But observers say the deal’s overall impact has been minimal. Mr Wang said it was a “joke” due to a lack of enforcement. Chinese cyber-espionage in the US has been “pervasive” and extends to academic labs. “It has been going on in every aspect of Western businesses,” he told the BBC.

However Lim Tai Wei from the National University of Singapore noted that there were no “definitive uncontested studies” on the extent of the phenomenon.

“Some believe that there was a short dip in Chinese cyber espionage against the US, but resumed its former level thereafter. Others believe it failed due to the overall breakdown in US-China relations,” he said.

Meanwhile the US is now directly trying to block China’s progress in the key semiconductor industry – vital for everything from smartphones to weapons of war – saying China’s use of the technology poses a national security threat.

In October, Washington announced some of the broadest export controls yet, requiring licences for companies exporting chips to China using US tools or software, no matter where they are made in the world. Washington’s measures also prevent US citizens and green card holders from working for certain Chinese chip companies. Green card holders are US permanent residents who have the right to work in the country.

Mr Marro says that while these measures will slow China’s technological advance, they will also accelerate China’s efforts to remove US and other foreign products from its tech supply chains.

“China has been trying to do this for years, with muted success, but these policy goals now command greater urgency as a result of the recent US controls,” he said.

With China also invoking its own national security, the scramble for a technological edge between the world’s two biggest economies is only likely to intensify further.

But Mr Wang reckons that the US still holds the advantage.

“My cyber-security friends tell me when they hack Chinese sites, the only worthwhile tech [they can find there] is US intellectual property,” he said.

  • China records first population decline in since 1961

China records first population decline in since 1961

China’s population has decreased for the first time in 60 years as a result of a record-low national birth rate of 6.77 births per 1,000 people.

    The population in 2022 – 1.4118 billion – fell by 850,000 from 2021.

China’s birth rate has been declining for years, prompting a slew of policies to slow the trend.

But seven years after scrapping the one-child policy, it has entered what one official described as an “era of negative population growth”.

The birth rate in 2022 was also down from 7.52 in 2021, according to China’s National Bureau of Statistics, which released the figures on Tuesday.

In comparison, in 2021, the United States recorded 11.06 births per 1,000 people, and the United Kingdom, 10.08 births. The birth rate for the same year in India, which is poised to overtake China as the world’s most populous country, was 16.42.

Deaths also outnumbered births for the first time last year. China logged its highest death rate since 1976 – 7.37 deaths per 1,000 people, up from 7.18 the previous year.

Earlier government data had heralded a demographic crisis, which would in the long run shrink China’s labour force and increase the burden on healthcare and other social security costs.

Results from a once-a-decade census announced in 2021 showed China’s population growing at its slowest pace in decades. Populations are also shrinking and ageing in other East Asian countries, such as Japan and South Korea.

“This trend is going to continue and perhaps worsen after Covid,” says Yue Su, principal economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit. Ms Su is among experts who expect China’s population to shrink further through 2023.

“The high youth unemployment rate and weaknesses in income expectations could delay marriage and childbirth plans further, dragging down the number of newborns,” she added.

And the death rate in 2023 is likely be higher than what it was pre-pandemic due to Covid infections, she said. China has seen a surge of cases since it abandoned its zero-Covid policy last month.

China’s population trends over the years have been largely shaped by the controversial one-child policy, which was introduced in 1979 to slow population growth.

Families that violated the rules were fined and in some cases, even lost jobs. In a culture that historically favours boys over girls, the policy had also led to forced abortions and a reportedly skewed gender ratio from the 1980s.

The policy was scrapped in 2016 and married couples were allowed to have two children. In recent years, the Chinese government also offered tax breaks and better maternal healthcare, among other incentives, to reverse, or at least slow, the falling birth rate.

But these policies did not lead to a sustained increase in the births. Some experts say this is because policies that encouraged childbirth were not accompanied by efforts to ease the burden of childcare, such as more help for working mothers or access to education.

In October 2022, Chinese President Xi Jinping made boosting birth rates a priority. Mr Xi said in a once-in-five-year Communist Party Congress in Beijing that his government will “pursue a proactive national strategy” in response to the country’s ageing population.

Apart from dishing out incentives to have children, China should also improve gender equality in households and workplaces, said Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan, director of the National University of Singapore’s Centre for Family and Population Research.

Scandinavian countries have shown that such moves can improve fertility rates, she added.

“They are not in a doomsday scenario right away,” says Paul Cheung, Singapore’s former chief statistician, adding that China has “plenty of manpower” and “a lot of lead time” to manage the demographic challenge.

Observers say merely raising birth rates will not resolve the problems behind China’s slowing growth.

“Boosting fertility is not going to improve productivity or increase domestic consumption in the medium term,” said Stuart Gietel-Basten, a public policy professor at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. “How China will respond to these structural issues would be more crucial.”

  • Husband of Nepal co-pilot died in plane crash 16 years ago

Husband of Nepal co-pilot died in plane crash 16 years ago

The co-pilot of the ill-fated flight that crashed in Nepal on Sunday lost her husband in a plane crash 16 years earlier, it has emerged.

Anju Khatiwada was co-piloting Yeti Airlines flight 691 when it smashed into a gorge near the tourist town of Pokhara, killing all on board in the country’s worst air disaster in 30 years.

Her husband Dipak Pokhrel had also been co-piloting a Yeti Airlines flight when he died – and it was his death that spurred Anju to pursue a career in aviation.

Distraught at her loss, alone with their young child, Anju’s grief became her motivating force.

“She was a determined woman who stood for her dreams and fulfilled the dreams of her husband,” family member Santosh Sharma said.

Dipak was in the cockpit of a Twin Otter prop plane which was carrying rice and food to the western town of Jumla when it came down and burst into flames in June 2006, killing all nine people on board.

Four years later Anju was on the path to becoming a pilot, overcoming many obstacles to train in the US. Once qualified, she joined Yeti Airlines.

A trailblazer, Anju was one of just six women employed by the airline as pilots, and had flown close to 6,400 hours.

“She was a full captain at the airline who had done solo flights,” Sudarshan Bartaula from Yeti Airlines said. “She was a brave woman.”

Anju later remarried and had a second child as she continued to build her career. Friends and family say she adored her job, and was a delight to be around. That she and her first husband both died this way is a tragedy within a tragedy.

At the crash site in Pokhara, parts of the plane Anju was co-piloting lay scattered on the banks of the River Seti, strewn like battered pieces of a broken toy. A small section of the aircraft rested on the gorge, windows intact and the green and yellow of Yeti Airlines still visible.

This week’s tragedy has reignited a conversation about airline safety in the Himalayan nation, which has seen hundreds die in air accidents in recent decades.

Over the years, a number of factors have been blamed for Nepal’s poor airlines safety record. The mountain terrain and often unpredictable weather can be tricky to navigate, and are often cited as reasons. But others point to outdated aircraft, lax regulations and poor oversight as equally important factors.

It’s still unclear what caused Sunday’s crash.

Outside the hospital in Pokhara, families of those killed waited for the bodies of their relatives to be released after their post mortems had been completed.

In the bitter cold January air, Bhimsen Ban said he was hoping he could take his friend Nira back to her village soon so her last rites could be performed.

Nira Chantyal, 21, was a singer who often flew with Yeti Airlines. Low cost air travel has become an affordable and popular way for the country’s middle class to traverse the mountainous nation.

Nira, who had moved to Kathmandu, had been on the fight on her way to perform at a music festival in Pokhara.

“She was a very talented artist, and used to sing folk songs. She would often sing spontaneously,” Bhimsen said, his eyes red from crying.

“I have no words to describe the loss.”

Nigerian police indict secretary, Evelyn Ngige over fraud

The investigation report by the Nigeria Police Force investigating claims of procurement fraud against senior members of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment has been made public.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the police investigation followed a petition by Phantom Digital Technologies Services Limited through its lawyers to the Inspector General of Police, which was sighted on Friday, over a contract for the supply of 14 vehicles undertaken by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Evelyn Ngige in violation of mandatory provisions of the Public Procurement Act, 2007.

The petition dated November 15, 2022, and titled had read, “Petition in respect of a suspected case of monumental fraud, obtaining by false pretences, corrupt practices and criminal breach of trust: urgent request to save our client and its management from victimization, continuous harassment, false information, intimidation, public embarrassment, and blackmail”.

It was signed by lawyers, Azeez Taiwo Hassan Esq and Adaobi Obioma Esq.

In the report signed by ACP Ibrahim Musa and sent to the Minister in-charge of the ministry, the police indicted two former Directors in the ministry, Uchola Emmanuel Ina and Abubakar Dangaladima for taking away vehicles worth millions of Naira belonging to the government while proceeding on retirement.

      The report read, “Upon the receipt of the formal letter of complaint and in compliance with Inspector-General of Police directive for investigation of the case under reference, a painstaking investigation was carried out, in which the written statements of the under-listed persons were duly recorded at the IGP Monitoring Unit;

      “3.1. Onuoha Ifeanyi Aged “39” “M” (Complainant); 3.2 Emmanuel Uchols Aged ’60’ “M’ (Suspect 1); 3.3 Otunba Dr. Adejare Adedapo Aged ’49 “M’ (Witness);

“That it was agreed by contracting parties that the contract term would be 7 days during which the said vehicles will be supplied to the Ministry upon fulfilling of the defined conditions required to enable Phantom Digital Technology Services Limited carry out his obligations

      “That there was a delay occasioned by the Ministry as the procurement process was not completed until December 2021 thereby resulting in a hike in the market price of the vehicles of the specification covered by the Contract;

      “That on the 23rd of December, 2021 after the agreement was signed, Managing Director Phantom Digital Technology Services Limited delivered Four(4) nos of Mikano ZNA Rich6 4 X 4 Petrol Pickup- vehicle 241 Engine at the rate of N22,521,250.00 (New Price) each against the rate of N19,500,000 (Old Price) to the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, who took delivery of same;

      “That to give effect to the new price, Managing Director Phantom Digital Technology Services Limited in a letter dated 17th February, 2022 to The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment, informed the Ministry that the prices of the vehicle rose from N19,500,000 to N22,500,000 as a result of their delays in procurement process which lasted from 5th July to 14th December, 2021;

      “That Managing Director Phantom Digital Technology Services Limited informed the Ministry that the total amount of the fourteen vehicles is now to be N353,097,500 against former price of N315,297,500.00 approved price, hence he applied for additional payment of N37,800,000.00 as the additional sum to be paid before he will supply the additional one(1) vehicle remaining;

“That Mr. Emmanuel Ina in a Memo T/FAL/23614/5.3042/1/30 informed the Permanent Secretary of the delivery of eleven(11) Mikano Pickups from Phantom Digital Technology Services in addition to the two earlier supplied making it a total of thirteen (13) and stated clearly to the Permanent Secretary that the remaining one(1) Vehicle will be delivered by the contractor.

      “That the Memo T/FAL/23614/5.3042/1/30, also proposed the distribution the vehicles to different departments of the Ministry and captured the remaining one(1) vehicle yet to be delivered by the Company;

      “That Mr. Uchola Emmanuel Ina in anticipation of the remaining one Vehicle yet to be delivered on 31st December, 2021 wrote a letter requesting for funds to be released for the fourteen vehicle to be registered but was directed by the Permanent Secretary in his Minuting dated 21/01/22 to stay action pending when Honourable Minister Commissions same;

      “That while all these were pending Mr. Uchola Emmanuel Ina retired as a Director, General Services on 5th March, 2022, while Abubakar Dangaladima retired earlier as Director Weights and Measures on the 5th of June, 2021 from Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment;

      “That Mr. Abubakar Dangaladima and Mr. Uchola Emmanuel Ina while proceeding on retirement took away the Prado Jeep with registration number 11A-18-FG and Toyota Hilux with Registration number 11A-70-FG respectively belonging to the Ministry based on the claim, that it was auctioned to them;

      “That the auctioneers receipt dated 13th October, 2021 which Mr. Uchola Emmanuel Ina claimed was issued to him for the Boarding of the vehicle is irreconcilable with the Treasury receipt as the auctioneer receipt should have preceded the Treasury Receipt; That upon issuing several Police invitations to Mr. Abubakar Dangaladima, he returned the Prado Jeep with registration number 11A-18-FG to the Ministry while and Mr. Uchola Emmanuel Ina returned the Toyota Hilux with Registration number 11A-70-FG belonging to the Ministry to the Police which has been returned to the Ministry;

      “That the Ministry cannot substantiate their allegation that Mr. Uchola Emmanuel Ina took away new Mikano ZNA Rich6 4 X 4 Petrol Pickup vehicle as the Ministry is having procurement issues with the supplier who has refused to supply the remaining one vehicle;

“Obvious that; From the findings, it is; There has been procurement misunderstanding between Phantom Digital Technology Services Limited and the Ministry over the supply of the remaining one (1) Mikano ZNA Rich6 4 X 4 Petrol Pickup as a result of non-consideration of the variation brought by the Company which involves the payment of additional sum of N37,800,000.00, due to change in price at the Market.

      “And in the course of the procurement imbroglio, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry consciously directed and mandated Mr. Uchola Emmanuel (Director General Services) and D. A. Muhammad (Director Legal Services) to execute the said Contract Agreement dated 14 December, 2021 on her behalf, which is in contravention of Section 20 (1) of the Public Procurement Act 2007 which mandates the Accounting officer of every procuring entity to have overall responsibility for the planning of, organization of tenders, evaluation of tenders and execution of all procurements;

“The decision of Mr. Abubakar Dangaladima and Mr. Uchola Emmanuel Ina, to takeaway Prado Jeep with registration number 11A- 18-FG and Toyota Hilux with Registration number 11A-70-FG respectively, belonging to the Ministry upon their retirement cannot be justified as they could not provide evidence of boarding same to them.”

Bones of Atlas lions on display at Rabat Zoological Park

At one of the country’s top tourist destinations, the Rabat Zoo, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture of Morocco has put on exhibit the bones of an Atlas lion.

The bones were recoverd from Bismoune cave and later preserved for future demonstration on the evolution of fauna and the climate.

“For us, these finds, these studies, demonstrate once again the evolution of the fauna and the evolution of the climate within the kingdom, which allows us to deepen these studies in order to better understand our past. A past that is important for any future strategy in the field of archaeology and geology,” said Mehdi Bensaïd, Moroccan Minister of Culture.

The Atlas lions are well known breed of big cats that mainly live in the mountains or desert habitats different from the ones found in predominantly in the savannah vegetation.

The Moroccan zoo sets a benchmark for breeding and has 37 Atlas lions in total, the largest population in the world. Although these specimens are highly demanded, the Rabat zoo is controlling reproduction.

This is how you deal with a burnt mouth or tongue

These tips will help you ease the pain

It happens to the best of us: we’re just a little too eager to start eating our dinner or drinking our coffee. This eagerness ultimately results in a burnt mouth or tongue. And recovery feels like it takes forever. So how can we deal with a burnt mouth or tongue?

        Burns, blisters and swelling

When you burn your mouth or tongue, the surface of your oral mucosa will get damaged. That makes the skin turn red, and causes your mouth or tongue to hurt. Sometimes it is accompanied by a decrease in taste an another consequence, is blisters. And these blisters could stay for a couple of hours, but sometimes even a couple of days. With the following tips, you might significantly reduce the amount of time spent in pain. And you will soon be able to fully enjoy that food or drink you have been dying to taste!

        Tea

The first thing you could try, is drink some chamomile tea. Chamomile is known for its soothing and disinfectant properties. If you drink a cup of chamomile tea (not too hot, of course!), you can soothe your burns and make them hurt less. And that is the ultimate goal!

        Cold

Another way to reduce the pain, is by cooling off. If you drink a glass of cold water or milk, you can cool the burns in your mouth, which would make them hurt less. Just take a sip of water or milk and keep it in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing. You’ll notice that the cold will take some of the pain away, resulting in a more comfortable feeling in your mouth.

        Salt

The last tip involves water and just a little pinch of salt. If you mix the salt with the water, take a sip and gargle, the salt will disinfect the wound. Ánd it will have a soothing effect. Eventually, you’ll notice that the pain subsides and you can actually enjoy your food again.

Just make sure to stay away from ice or ice cubes. Despite what you’d think, those will only make the pain worse. Another way to deal with a burnt mouth or tongue, is by steering clear of certain foods. If you eat a lot of ‘hard’ foods like chips or crunchy bread, you’ll irritate your skin and it will hurt more. Other foods that might

make your pain worse are alcohol and spicy or spiced foods.

      • How to cut beets without staining your hands

How to cut beets without staining your hands

Who doesn’t love beets? But we definitely do not love cutting these yummy vegetables. Every time you cut a beet, your hands will stain. And you definitely don’t want to walk around all day, looking like you’ve been an accomplice in some bloody crime. So how do you cut beets without staining your hands?

        Gloves

The first and most obvious way to prevent your hands from staining, is by wearing gloves. If you wear your kitchen gloves while cutting beets, the red juice that usually stains your hands won’t be able to get to your skin. It might stain your gloves though, so pick a pair that you’re not necessarily fond of. And be careful when you remove the gloves; if you touch your red gloves with your bare skin, they might still cause your hands to stain.

An added bonus to wearing gloves: they might also help you hold the beet while you cut it. Because beets can get slippery!

        Olive oil

Another way to prevent stains, is by rubbing some olive oil on your hands before you start cutting. Just put some olive oil on your hands and rub them together. Make sure you cover all of your hands. That way, the beet juice won’t stand a chance! The downside to this method: those slippery beets we mentioned before? They will get even more slippery because of the oil. So be careful!

        Lemon and potato

If you have cut your beets without the proper precautions, you probably have some red hands to show for it. But luckily, there are some ways to get rid of the stains! You can put a little bit of lemon juice on your hands. That will cause the beet juice to resolve, bringing the natural color of your hands back. If you have dry skin or a lot of small gaps on your hands, you might want to avoid this method.

Another method is rubbing your hands with a potato, under running water. The potato will absorb the beet juice and your hands will be squeaky clean once again!

Somali taxman sentenced to death for killing trader

A Somali military court has sentenced a revenue officer to death for the murder of a man following a dispute over a 5,000 Somali-shilling ($9; £7) tax, state TV says.

Qasim Duale Abdi shot dead businessman Abubakar Mohamed Nourani, 65, last week in the Hamarweyne district of the capital Mogadishu in front of dozens of onlookers for failing to pay the $9, state prosecutors told the court on Sunday.

The killing sent shockwaves throughout the country and among Somalis online, with even President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud intervening to call for justice for the victim.

The case was heard and concluded in one session on 15 January.

Mr Nourani’s family and friends thanked the court for the death sentence, saying they were satisfied with how security and judicial services handled the case.

The prosecution told the court that the victim’s business was so small it did not meet the threshold to pay tax, saying the convict was part of an extortion racket in Mogadishu.

The court ruled that the tax officer “deliberately killed the victim”.

The death penalty is legal in Somalia and executions for crimes such as murder are common in the country.

Former Ivorian Trade Minister Jean-Louis Billon has demanded that the 75-year-old age restriction for presidential candidates be amended.

His comment is said to be targeted at President Alassane Ouattara, former Presidents Laurent Gbagbo and Henri Konan Bédié, although none of the three men has officially applied for the election so far.

Two of the three Ivorian politicians are in their 80s while one is in his 70s, something the former Trade Minister is now campaigning against.

Recently, the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire, PDCI’s political bureau, decided to designate Konan Bédié, the 88-year-old former president as the sole candidate to lead the party. Mr. Billion has announced his intention to be a candidate in Ivory Coast’s presidential election in 2025.

War in Tigray killed 600,000 – AU mediator

The African Union mediator in Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict, Olusegun Obasanjo, has told the Financial Times(FT) that up to 600,000 people may have died in the two-year war.

In an interview with the paper, Mr Obasanjo said the number of the dead was “around 600,000”.

The number of the people who died in the conflict is difficult to verify. Researchers have previously estimated the deaths to be in the hundreds of thousands.

On Sunday, the FT quoted the head of Ethiopia’s human rights commission, Daniel Bekele, as saying that estimates given by all sides needed to be treated with caution as it was impossible “to know the full number of casualties”.

The conflict started in November 2020, when Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered a military offensive against regional forces in Tigray – which he said was a response to an attack on a military base housing government troops.

Last November the Ethiopian government and Tigray rebels signed a ceasefire agreement ending the war.

      • Andrew Tate: Romanian police widen investigations into controversial influencer

Andrew Tate: Romanian police widen investigations into controversial influencer

A fleet of high-end vehicles were seized from Andrew Tate’s Bucharest compound over the weekend, while Romanian police raided seven additional homes, including a recently refurbished villa in the Carpathian Mountains, as part of their investigation into the former kickboxing champion.

The sight of Mr Tate’s shiny dove-grey Porsche perched delicately on the battered frame of a police tow truck neatly captured his shift in fortunes as, through the high black gates of his compound, a slow procession of trucks carried his prized collection of luxury cars to join him in police custody.

At the side of the road, a single fan stood watching. “I consider myself a fan,” Emmanuel told me. “Every boy likes his lifestyle.

“I don’t like what I’m hearing about him, but we’ll see if it’s true. I’ll change my attitude if I see proof.”

Some here see the confiscation of the cars as a sign that the Romanian authorities are preparing for the next stage in this case, securing assets as collateral against potential compensation claims from victims, in the event that Andrew Tate or his brother Tristan are charged with people trafficking.

Raids on seven more properties last week are widely seen as a sign that investigators are expanding their search for evidence in the case.Media caption,

Watch: Beatrice and Jasmin, who Romanian police deem to be potential victims of Andrew Tate, say they were friends, not victims

In the town of Comarnic, two hours’ drive to the north, the Tate villa, freshly raided by police on Thursday, towers over the houses around it. Small homemade sheds perch against the high walls that surround the property.

Neighbours here say the property was fully renovated last year, and only completed a few months ago.

Trandafir Beldica lives in a worn housing block beside the main gate to the villa.

“The guy in charge of the construction asked me to work on the electrics, but when they explained what they wanted, I told them it was way beyond what I knew how to do,” Trandafir told me.

Inside, he said, the house has “all the amenities you can think of”.

“It’s extremely luxurious,” he explained. “It’s divided into flats [and] they could afford to build a swimming pool – things that people like us couldn’t even dare to dream of.”

How Andrew Tate made his money is a key part of this investigation.

Police want to know whether he lured women to Romania with promises of a serious relationship or marriage, before forcing or manipulating them into working for him as models in adult entertainment chat rooms.

They are also looking into rape allegations made by one of the witnesses.

Investigators have confirmed that six women have been identified as potential victims. But last week, two of the women in the investigation publicly denied any mistreatment by the Tate brothers.

Image caption, Andrew Tate’s luxury cars were towed away from his compound in Bucharest

The women – who have tattoos reading “Property of Tate” and “Tate Girl” – worked in the compound in Bucharest, where Andrew Tate lived with his brother and the models who staffed his adult web-cam business.

Speaking to Romania’s Antena 1 TV channel, one of the women – identified as Beatrice – said she had been “good friends” with the Tate brothers for two years and had “Tate Girl” tattooed on her arm “out of respect for them”.

The other woman – Jasmin – said she had never seen Mr Tate or his brother Tristan be “aggressive or rude”.

The BBC has verified their identities with a former member of Tate staff.

“I was never threatened,” Beatrice said. “If I was, I wouldn’t be stupid enough to stay in that house.

“You can’t describe me as a victim in the case file if I’m not a victim.”

Describing the moment police first entered the compound in December, Beatrice said 20 police officers charged in and went upstairs to a bedroom where, she says, two other women had locked themselves inside the room in fear of the raid.

“They broke the door down. [The women] screamed,” Beatrice said.

“But the police didn’t see that the key to the bedroom was lying on the bed.”

BBC News has spoken to others who have different memories of the raid.

There is little clarity about what evidence investigators have gathered so far. And among the Tates’ former associates, claims, counter-claims and conspiracy theories exist side-by-side.

No charges have yet been brought, but Mihaela Dragus, spokeswoman for Romania’s National Anti-Trafficking Agency, says the case is already sending a strong message to both traffickers and victims.

“The fact that the justice system has decided to keep the brothers in custody, even during the preliminary phase of the [case], sends a very important message,” she says.

In one of his social media videos, Andrew Tate explains why he moved to Romania in 2017.

“One of [my reasons] is the #MeToo era,” he says. “People say: ‘Oh you are a rapist’. No, I am not a rapist, but I like the idea of being able to do what I want, I like being free.”

“If she goes to the [Romanian] police and says: ‘He raped me yesterday’, they’ll say ok, do you have evidence? Is there CCTV proof?”

None of this is evidence that Mr Tate was involved in human trafficking or rape, but his assessment of Romania’s attitude to sexual crimes is not wrong, says Laura Stefan, a legal expert and prominent anti-corruption campaigner working with the Expert Forum think tank.

“In a way, he’s right,” she told me. “Listening to him, the way he explained why he came here, I could relate to that; I thought he made a good calculation – unfortunately.”

But she says things are changing.

“Romania has a serious problem with trafficking, and I think the Romanian authorities have come to understand that this has to be dealt with,” she explained.

“That means not only investigating a handful of hotshots, but also working with the victims and providing them with support.”

Last year, Romania made enough progress for the US Trafficking In Persons report to take it off their watchlist.

But the report also repeated concerns about Romanian officials themselves being involved in people trafficking.

This case, involving a controversial, high-profile personality with US-British citizenship, has put a fresh spotlight on how Romania handles allegations of organised crime and sexual exploitation.

Police have less than two weeks to charge the Tate brothers, or find enough evidence to convince a judge to extend their detention while the investigation continues.

Andrew Tate’s reputation is on the line. Romania’s is too.

Gunmen kill former Afghan MP at home in Kabul

An Ex-Afghan MP, Mursal Nabizada have been short dead at her residence together with her bodyguard in the capital Kabul.

The Afghan police reported that the 32-year-old was one of the few female MPs who stayed in Kabul after the Taliban seized power in August 2021.

Her brother and a second security guard were wounded in the attack on Sunday.

Former colleagues praised Ms Nabizada as a “fearless champion for Afghanistan” who turned down a chance to leave the country.

Since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, women have been removed from nearly all areas of public life.

Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said security forces had started a serious investigation into the incident.

Former lawmaker Mariam Solaimankhil said Ms Nabizada was “a true trailblazer – strong, outspoken woman who stood for what she believed in, even in the face of danger”.

“Despite being offered the chance to leave Afghanistan, she chose to stay and fight for her people,” she wrote on Twitter.

Ms Nabizada, from the eastern province of Nangarhar, was elected as a member of parliament from Kabul in 2018 and stayed in power until the Taliban takeover.

She was a member of the parliamentary defence commission and worked at the Institute for Human Resources Development and Research.

Hannah Neumann, a member of the European Parliament, said: “I am sad and angry and want the world to know!” in response to the killing.

“She was killed in darkness, but the Taliban build their system of gender apartheid in full daylight.”

Abdullah Abdullah, a former top official in Afghanistan’s former Western-backed government, said he was saddened by Ms Nabizada’s death and hoped the perpetrators would be punished.

He described her as a “representative and servant of the people”.

Damar Hamlin discharged from Buffalo hospital

Safety for the Buffalo Bills, Damar Hamlin, has been released from the hospital on Wednesday after testing revealed he was healthy enough to continue his rehab at home, according to the organization.

Hamlin left Buffalo General Medical Center after he “went through a comprehensive medical evaluation as well as a series of cardiac, neurological and vascular testing on Tuesday,” the Bills said.

Dr. Jamie Nadler said in a statement released through the team, “We have completed a series of tests and evaluations and in consultation with the team physicians, we are confident that Damar can be safely discharged to continue his rehabilitation at home and with the Bills.”

Hamlin, 24, a second-year safety, suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field Jan. 2 during the first quarter of Buffalo’s game against the Bengals at Cincinnati’s Paycor Stadium.

He had made what appeared to be a routine tackle of Bengals receiver Tee Higgins when he went limp and fell backward to the ground.

It’s still unclear how the simple play contributed to Hamlin’s cardiac arrest.

Doctors last week speculated that Hamlin might have experienced commotio cordis, a rare phenomenon in which blunt force to the chest can cause a healthy heart to stop beating during a narrow window of the cardiac cycle.

Ever since the scary incident, Hamlin has been the recipient of unwavering backing from football fans who have shown their support at stadiums across the NFL.

The Bills-Bengals game was canceled, which might have cost Buffalo the No. 1 AFC seed in the playoffs. The Bills finished 13-3, a half-game behind the Kansas City Chiefs (14-3) for the conference’s top spot and a first-round playoff bye.

Instead, the Bills ended with the No. 2 seed and will play host to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday in a wild card game

      • Ablakwa’s “false claims” on Rev. Kusi Boateng & Cathedral Board, exposed by new documents

Recent documents reveals that North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has wrongfuly accused National Cathedral Secretariat and Rev. Victor Kusi-Boateng.

Kusi Boateng who is Secretary to the Board of the National Cathedral and also founder and Leader of the Power Chapel Worldwide Prophet was earlier fingered by the MP in an alleged “misappropriation” exposé of National Cathedral funds to his spiritual son, Rev. Johannes Eshun.

The North Tongu MP claimed he discovered alleged diversion of GHS2.6million of National Cathedral funds to a company known as JNS Talent Centre Limited owned by Rev. Johannes Eshun.

According to him, the incorporation information, JNS Talent Centre Limited’s given registration number which is CS695622015 has one Johannes Eshun, Sheila Eshun and Kwabena Adu Gyamfi directors and that the company has no track record in construction and design which was gifted the GHS2.6million of the National Cathedral Secretariat has links to Rev. Kusi Boateng.

The MP’s allegation caused the public to insult Rev. Prophet Johannes Eshun and his father Rev. Victor Kusi-Boateng, Founder of Power Chapel Worldwide.

It has now been revealed the amount the MP claimed was paid for no work done or misappropriated was rather a documented loan without interest advanced by JNS Limited to the National Cathedral Board to pay off outstanding contractual commitments which it duly paid back.

Records of Bank transactions shows the Cathedral Board wrote to the company for the loan and received a reply back with bank records proving same.

Rev. Johannes Eshun who is also said to be a branch pastor of Rev. Kusi Boateng’s church — Rev. Eshun’s branch is the Power Chapel Worldwide, Bethel Arena was smeared wrongly by the North Tongu MP without proper investigation or due diligence.

“It remains a mystery what kind of services JNS Talent Centre Limited provided to the National Cathedral Secretariat to pocket a cool GHS2.6million. Or could it have been that they were sharpening the talent of Architect David Adjaye?” Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa wrote with false claims.

“When I called up Madam Sheilla Eshun, a director of TNS to assist with my constitutional oversight duties, the seemingly startled lady said she had scanty information on the GHS2.6million cathedral transaction and that she will prefer I speak to her MD who is currently out of the country and therefore will ask her MD to get back to me in 2 weeks when he returns to Ghana.” He added.

The MP failed to reach out to the National Cathedral Board for an explanation before running to town. The MP insists he was right despite all new facts.

A passerby who had witnessed the incident reported the accident to the Apam Fire Station at 2000hrs, following which a rescue team was dispatched to the scene and survivors were rescued from the carnage.

The dead have since been handed over to the Ghana Police Service to be deposited at a morgue.

They include three females and four males.

      • CEO of Apple, Tim Cook to receive pay cut by over 40% this year

CEO of Apple, Tim Cook to receive pay cut by over 40% this year

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, will receive a more than 40% compensation reduction this year.

The technology giant says Mr Cook requested the cut after criticism from shareholders.

Apple’s compensation committee awarded him a total “target compensation” of $49m (£45.1m) for 2023.

Last year the iPhone maker’s shares fell sharply in the face of supply chain issues and a global economic slowdown.

“The Compensation Committee balanced shareholder feedback, Apple’s exceptional performance, and a recommendation from Mr Cook to adjust his compensation in light of the feedback received,” Apple said in a filing with a US financial watchdog.

The move will see Mr Cook’s annual basic salary unchanged at $3m, as well as a bonus of up to $6m.

The biggest difference to his pay package is how he will be awarded shares in the firm.

In 2022 the company granted him $75m of shares, half of which were based on how well Apple performed on the stock market.

For this year his stock award target has been cut to $40m, with three quarters of that dependant on share performance.

The target for Mr Cook’s compensation for 2022 was $84m, although his actual total pay for last year was $99.4m. That figure included $630,600 in personal security costs and $712,500 for his use of a private jet.

Last year Apple shareholders were urged by a leading investor advisory group to vote against Mr Cook’s pay package.

In a letter to investors, Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) said there are “significant concerns” over the “design and magnitude” of the package.

The ISS said Mr Cook’s pay was 1,447 times more than the wage of an average Apple employee.

Mr Cook became Apple’s chief executive in August 2011, just weeks before the death of co-founder Steve Jobs.

Under Mr Cook’s leadership Apple became the first company to reach a stock market valuation of $3tn before falling to about $2.1tn during a tumultuous year for the technology industry.

Covid lockdowns at factories in China, supply chain delays and a global economic slowdown have helped push down Apple’s share price by more than 20% over the last year.

The 62-year-old’s personal wealth stands at around $1.7bn, according to Forbes magazine. Mr Cook has pledged to give away his entire fortune during his lifetime.

Singer, Lisa Marie Presley, and daughter of Elvis, dies aged 54

The sole child of Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie Presley, has died at age 54, according to her mother.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” Priscilla Presley said.

Lisa Marie, also a singer, was rushed to hospital earlier on Thursday. US media say she suffered cardiac arrest.

She was found unresponsive at her home in Calabasas, California, sources told US outlet TMZ.

“She was the most passionate, strong and loving woman I have ever known,” Priscilla Presley said in a statement.

“We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss.”

Her mother gave no details about the possible cause of death.

Citing a source close to Lisa Marie Presley, TMZ reported that the star was found unresponsive in her bedroom on Thursday morning. At about the same time her former husband Danny Keough, who also lives at the property, arrived and performed CPR.

The outlet said that she had suffered a “full arrest” before a bystander administered epinephrine – commonly known as adrenaline – to help her regain a pulse.

Paramedics arrived shortly afterwards, taking Presley to hospital.

Days before her death, she had visited Graceland, the mansion owned by her father in Memphis, Tennessee, to celebrate what would have been his 88th birthday on 8 January.

Tributes started pouring in from across America soon after Lisa Marie’s death was reported.

Actor Tom Hanks played her father’s manager Col Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 biopic Elvis. On behalf of the couple, Hanks’ wife Rita Wilson posted on Instagram that their hearts were “broken”.

“Tom and I had spent some time with the family during the Elvis movie promotional tour. Lisa Marie was so honest and direct, vulnerable, in a state of anticipation about the movie,” she wrote.

“She spoke so eloquently about her father, what the movie meant to her, that it was a celebration of her dad.”

Born in 1968, Lisa Marie went on to follow in her father’s footsteps and forged a career in music. The star released three albums, with her 2003 debut studio album selling hundreds of thousands of copies and receiving generally positive reviews.

The star was also well-known for a series of high-profile marriages to pop legend Michael Jackson, actor Nicholas Cage and musicians Danny Keough and Michael Lockwood.

She had four children, including the actress Riley Keough. Presley’s son, Benjamin Keough, killed himself in 2020.

Last August, Presley wrote an an essay on grief for US publication People about “the horrific reality” of how she felt after her son’s death.

“I’ve dealt with death, grief and loss since the age of nine years old,” she wrote, referring to her age when Elvis died in 1977. “I’ve had more than anyone’s fair share of it in my lifetime and somehow, I’ve made it this far.”

Grammy-award winning songwriter Diane Warren expressed her sorrow at the “horrible news”. The singer added that “the entire world is sending love and prayers to Priscilla and Lisa Marie’s children right now”.

Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson also paid tribute, saying was “hard to take when someone so young and full of life passes on”.

US pop star Pink described Presley her as “one of a kind” and “smart as a whip, sensitive [and] talented”, while Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin wrote a message for Presley’s mother Priscilla.

“I had the chance to know Cilla Presley when I was on Dancing With the Stars and as a mother, I can’t imagine the pain she must be going through with the untimely passing of Lisa Marie,” she said.

      • We are a de facto member of Nato alliance – Ukraine defence minister

We are a de facto member of Nato alliance – Ukraine defence minister

The Ukrainian defense minister claims that due to a shift in Western nations’ “thinking approach,” Ukraine has effectively joined NATO. Previously, Western nations were afraid that providing military assistance may be perceived by Russia as an escalation.

In an interview with the BBC, Oleksii Reznikov said he was sure Ukraine would receive long-sought weapons, including tanks and fighter jets, as both Ukraine and Russia seemed to be preparing for new offensives in the spring.

“This concern about the next level of escalation, for me, is some kind of protocol,” Mr Reznikov said.

“Ukraine as a country, and the armed forces of Ukraine, became [a] member of Nato. De facto, not de jure (by law). Because we have weaponry, and the understanding of how to use it.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has framed his invasion of Ukraine as an existential battle against Western countries that want to weaken Russia.

Russian figures have argued they are fighting Nato in Ukraine, as the West has supplied the country with weapons in what they call a war of aggression.

Ukraine, for years, has sought to join the military alliance between the US, Canada and 28 European countries, something President Vladimir Putin has described as a security threat for Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pushed for fast-track accession, but it is unclear whether full membership is something the alliance members will seriously consider even after the war is over, despite pledges of support.

Article 5 of the Nato Treaty says an armed attack against any member should be considered an attack against all.

Mr Reznikov, however, denied that his comments would be seen as controversial, not only by Russia but, perhaps, by Nato itself, as the alliance has taken steps not to be seen as a party to the conflict.

“Why [would it be] controversial? It’s true. It’s a fact,” Mr Reznikov said. “I’m sure that in the near future, we’ll become member of Nato, de jure.”

Ukrainian forces fire at Russian positions at the front line near Soledar, Donetsk region, Ukraine
Image caption, Soledar, a small town in the eastern Donetsk region, has been experiencing some of the war’s most intense fighting

The defence minister spoke in the capital, Kyiv, as Ukrainian and Russian forces continued to fight for the small town of Soledar, in the eastern Donetsk region, in some of the most intense battles in the nearly 11-month-old war.

The Russian offensive is led by the mercenary Wagner Group, whose founder Yevgeny Prigozhin, a long-time Putin ally, has become a vocal critic of the Russian army’s performance in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Mr Prigozhin claimed that his fighters had seized control of the town, an allegation that was dismissed by Ukraine and, remarkably, by the Kremlin, in what was considered a rebuff to Mr Prigozhin.

The situation in Soledar was “very difficult”, Mr Reznikov said, but “under control”. He said Wagner fighters were being used in “wave after wave after wave” of attacks, leading to a high number of deaths, and that Mr Prigozhin was interested in the possible economic benefits of seizing the town, home to Europe’s largest salt mines.

“They’ll earn money from blood,” he said.

Soledar is about 10km (six miles) from Bakhmut, a strategic city where Ukrainian and Russian forces have been engaged in a months-long war of attrition that has caused widespread destruction and heavy losses on both sides. There, Wagner mercenaries have also been deployed in large numbers, and Mr Prigozhin is believed to have made the capture of Bakhmut a personal goal.

The group, Mr Reznikov said, “need to deliver some kind of proof to declare they’re better than the regular armed forces of the Russian Federation”. If seized, Bakhmut could pave the way for a Russian push towards Kramatorsk and Slovyansk, two Ukrainian strongholds in Donetsk, a region that has been a key target for President Putin.

Map shows areas of control in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine

Any gains would be, more than anything else, of extreme symbolic value for Russia. They would come after a series of humiliating setbacks, including a chaotic retreat from the north-eastern region of Kharkiv and the withdrawal from the southern city of Kherson, the only regional capital Russian forces had captured in the war.

Mr Reznikov claimed that “approximately 500 or 600” Russian fighters were being killed every day across the country, while Ukraine was losing a tenth of that, figures that could not be independently verified. He believed Russia could be trying to gather “forces, ammunition and weapons” for an offensive from areas it already occupies in the south and east.

Ukraine, in the meantime, needed time to regroup and rearm while it waited for the delivery of Western weapons. “Spring is the best period to refresh the movement for all sides,” he said. “We understand they’ll be ready to start and, surely, we have to be ready to start.”

However, he did not repeat a claim that Russia could be preparing another invasion from Belarus, a warning that has been dismissed by the head of the Ukrainian military intelligence agency. The movement from the north, Mr Reznikov said, “would take a lot of time and they [Russia] have no resources”.

Mr Reznikov spoke a day after the Russian defence ministry replaced the commander of its forces in Ukraine, a surprise announcement that was seen as a sign of a power struggle. Gen Valery Gerasimov, one of the architects of last year’s invasion, would return to the post that was being held by Gen Sergei Surovikin, who had been appointed in October.

The change, Mr Reznikov said, was a result of the “conflict between Mr Prigozhin and the armed forces of the Russian Federation”. Gen Surovikin oversaw the recent brutal attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure that, according to Mr Reznikov, “reduced the [Russian missile] stocks without any results”, repeating a Ukrainian claim that “they’re running out of missiles”.

As Poland and Britain revealed plans to deliver battle tanks for the first time, Mr Reznikov said he was sure Ukraine would receive “tanks, fighting aircrafts or jets, and long-range weaponry to hit targets in 300km (186 miles) as well”, because “things were changing” in Western countries.

He dismissed concerns that the announcements could trigger a Russian response, despite now-familiar threats from Moscow. “I have a war in my country,” he said. “They’re hitting my cities, my hospital, my kindergartens, my schools. They killed a lot of civilians, a lot of civilians. They’re an army of rapists, murderers and looters. What’s the next level of escalation?”

Police start an investigation into the son’s and mother’s strange deaths

The Gomoa East District’s Millennium City Police Command has started an inquiry into the events that led to the deaths of a mother and son at Green Estate, a neighborhood of Nyame N’Adom.

The woman, who was between the ages of 48 and 50, and her son, Alexander Ofori, who is 28 years old, were discovered dead in their three-bedroom apartment last Saturday, January 7, after neighbors complained to the authorities about a foul odor coming from the home.

When the police arrived, they discovered that the two had passed away many days prior to their finding. Their bodies were nearly decayed.

Since then, the victims’ bodies have been placed at the mortuary.

A local who spoke with the media claimed that she last saw the mother, who ran a tavern in the neighborhood with her son, early on the morning of Tuesday, January 3.

James Amuah, the chairman of the Gomoa Nyame N’Adom Residents’ Group, told the media that the woman’s relative had alerted the association that she could not be reached despite several phone calls. She went back to the house that evening (January 6), but it was locked up, so she was unable to find her.

      • Biden visitor logs under scrutiny after classified files found

Biden visitor logs under scrutiny after classified files found

In response to the discovery of secret documents at one of US Vice President Joe Biden’s houses, congressional Republicans have demanded to see the visitor logs for those locations.

Mr Biden acknowledged on Thursday that sensitive material was found in the garage of his house in Delaware.

The White House deflected when asked if the visitor logs would be provided.

The justice department has appointed an investigator to look into the files.

News that sensitive documents dating from Mr Biden’s time as vice-president had been found in a private office at the Penn Biden Center, a think tank in Washington, emerged earlier this week, followed by a disclosure that a second cache was discovered at Mr Biden’s home.

The first batch was found on 2 November, just before the US midterm elections, but only became public on Monday.

Mr Biden kept an office at the think tank after he left the White House in 2017 until he launched his presidential campaign in 2019.

On Thursday, US Attorney General Merrick Garland revealed in a news conference that the second cache had been found on 20 December at Mr Biden’s private home in Wilmington, Delaware.

He added that Mr Biden’s lawyers had called investigators on Thursday morning to notify them of an additional document, also found at the same residence.

Citing the “extraordinary circumstances”, the attorney general appointed Robert Hur, a former senior justice department official during the Trump presidency, to lead an investigation in the Biden files.

Kevin McCarthy, the newly elected Republican Speaker of the House, questioned the timing of the first disclosure and accused Mr Biden of knowingly mishandling the sensitive papers.

“He knowingly knew [sic] this happened going into [the] election, going into interviews. This is what makes America not trust their government,” Mr McCarthy said on Thursday. Media caption,

Biden documents: Who is special counsel Robert Hur?

Other Republicans on Thursday demanded the president release a log of all the people who had visited Mr Biden’s Delaware home.

James Comer, a Kentucky congressman and chairman of the House Oversight Committee, told Fox News: “We need to know who all has had access to the president.”

Colorado Republican Ken Buck wrote a letter to the White House calling on Mr Biden to “release all visitor logs”.

Elise Stefanik, the number three House Republican and a New York congresswoman, said that the visitor logs were “a clear matter of national security”.

Mr Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump, is also under investigation by the justice department after more than 300 classified files – including some marked with Secret and Top Secret designations – were discovered by FBI agents executing a search warrant last year at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Mr Biden again said that his lawyers had notified officials of the discovery and that he took the matter seriously.

The president – who previously described Mr Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified material as “totally irresponsible” – added that the documents were found locked in a garage next to his 1960s Chevrolet Corvette sports car, “not sitting out in the street”.

Lawyers also searched Mr Biden’s home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, but said they found no additional files.

An attorney for the president, Richard Sauber, said they were co-operating closely with the justice department.

He predicted the investigation would show “these documents were inadvertently misplaced, and the president and his lawyers acted promptly upon discovery of this mistake”.

Asked whether the Delaware visitor logs would ever be released, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre countered that the Biden administration had restored public disclosure on White House visitor logs that had been restricted under Mr Trump.

In 2017, the Trump administration also refused to reveal the names of most of the visitors to Mr Trump’s Mar-a-Lago golf club in Palm Beach during his presidency.

On Thursday, Mr Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that the attorney general should “immediately” end the investigation he faces over the Mar-a-Lago cache, claiming the special counsel “hates” him.

According to a CNN analysis in October, Mr Biden had spent more than a quarter of his presidency working from his houses in Wilmington or Rehoboth Beach.

Man allegedly admits raping his 14-year-old cousin to quell his “homosexual tendencies”

A 38-year-old man has been detained for raping his 14-year-old cousin.

This comes after he allegedly made a confession of the sexual assault to the victim’s family.

The Ladysmith man allegedly raped the boy to stop his “gay tendencies”, reports said.

According to KwaZulu-Natal social development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza the alleged sexual assault happened on January 3 and the suspect was arrested on Tuesday, TimesLIVE reported.

The family opened a case after the alleged suspect told them he raped his younger cousin because he wanted him to stop his “gay tendencies”.

The victim was taken to a hospital for medical attention, the report said.

“We cannot afford to have such people in our society. What kind of a person abuses a child without being remorseful, to the extent that he gloats about his abhorrent act?,” Khoza was quoted as saying.

According to IOL, Khoza commended the swift action of the police, which led to the man’s arrest and called for a harsh sentence for the alleged culprit.

She called on authorities to give the perpetrator a harsh sentence and urged the courts to grant no bail to the suspect, the report said.

“We are grateful that the police managed to arrest the man. We need to secure conviction so that an example can be made with such people. We welcome the man’s arrest and he must face the full might of the law,” the report quoted Khoza as saying.

A team of social workers had since been sent to the boy and his family to provide psycho-social support, Khoza added.

DR Congo army denies presence of Russian mercenaries

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s army has denied the presence of fighters from Russia’s mercenary Wagner Group in the country, in response to claims by a rebel group.

The army has been struggling to contain the M23 rebel group that has in recent months captured swathes of territory in the eastern part of the country.

Reports have suggested the presence of Russian mercenaries in North Kivu province on government’s invitation to help deal with the rebel group.

“It is true, Wagner Group is here. We have evidence that we will show in due time,” M23 spokesperson Willy Ngoma told the BBC on Wednesday.

He added that they had fought a joint team of the Congolese army and the mercenaries last week in Tongo and Nyamilima fronts in Rutshuru area.

But the army spokesperson Major General Sylvain Ekenge has denied the claims.

“The Wagner group is not operating in DR Congo,” he told the BBC.

Russian mercenaries have a presence in DR Congo’s northern neighbour, Central African Republic, where in 2021 they played a role in fighting rebels.

Last year in October, Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi told a meeting in London that he would not bring in Russian mercenaries to deal with the rebel activity in his country.

“I know it’s fashionable now . . .[but] no, we don’t need to use mercenaries,” he was quoted as saying by the Financial Times.

Nigerian law banning unmarried pregnant officers overturned

A police rule prohibiting unmarried female officers from becoming pregnant has been overturned by a Nigerian court, according to local media.

In a landmark judgment, a judge ruled that the regulation, which calls for the dismissal of any unmarried officer who gets pregnant, was “discriminatory, illegal, null and void”.

It followed a suit by a sacked policewoman who challenged her dismissal on grounds of discrimination since her male counterparts are not dismissed in similar circumstances.

“The court finds and holds that the provision [of the regulation], which applies to unmarried women police officers getting pregnant while in service but does not apply to unmarried male police officers impregnating females while they are in service, is discriminatory,” Justice Dashe Damulak ruled on Wednesday.

The court also awarded her 5m naira ($11,100; £9,100) in compensation for the violation of her fundamental right to freedom from discrimination.

It however ruled that she could not be reinstated to the police service, as she had sought, as she was on probation at the time of her dismissal.

      • Sergei Surovikin relieved of his role as commander of Ukraine invasion force

Sergei Surovikin relieved of his role as commander of Ukraine invasion force

President Vladimir Putin has dismissed Russia’s senior commander Sergei Surovikin in Ukraine barely three months after his appointment.

Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov will now lead what Mr Putin terms a “special military operation”.

Gen Gerasimov replaces Sergei Surovikin who has overseen recent brutal attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

The reshuffle comes as Russians claim they are making progress in eastern Ukraine after suffering a series of military defeats in recent months.

Russia launched its invasion into Ukraine on 24 February.

Gen Gerasimov, who has been in post since 2012, is the longest-serving Russian chief of general staff of the post-Soviet era.

Gen Surovikin – now his deputy – has been dubbed “General Armageddon” for his brutal tactics in previous wars, including Russia’s operations in Syria and the heavy bombardment of the city of Aleppo in particular.

Shortly after he was appointed to lead the operation in October, Russia began its campaign to destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving millions of Ukrainian civilians without power or running water for extended periods in the depths of winter. He also oversaw Russia’s withdrawal from the southern city of Kherson – a major success for the Ukrainians.

Russia’s defence ministry said the decision to replace Gen Surovikin was aimed at organising “closer contact between different branches of the armed forces and improving the quality and effectiveness of the management of Russian forces”.

But the move has been seen by some as a sign that he may have gained too much power.

“As the unified commander in Ukraine, Surovikin was becoming very powerful, and was likely bypassing [Russian Defence Minister Sergei] Shoigu and Gerasimov when talking to Putin,” military analyst Rob Lee wrote on Twitter.

Some of Russia’s hawkish military bloggers, who support the war but frequently criticise the way it is being carried out, have been highly critical of Russia’s military leadership, including the new head of the special operation, Gen Gerasimov.

Wednesday’s announcement comes as fighting continues in Soledar.

The fall of Soledar may help Russian troops in their assault on the strategic city of Bakhmut, about 10km (six miles) to the south-west, providing them with a secure artillery position within range of the city.

Soledar also has deep salt mines, which could be used to station troops and store equipment, protected from Ukrainian missiles.

Russia’s mercenary Wagner Group has taken full credit for “storming” it.

On Tuesday night, the group’s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said his forces were in full control of Soledar. However, on Wednesday the Russian defence ministry released a statement appearing to contradict his claim – or that only Wagner group troops were involved.

This led to Mr Prigozhin repeating the claim on Wednesday evening. In a short statement on Telegram, he boasted that his mercenaries had killed around 500 pro-Ukraine troops. “The whole city is littered with the corpses of Ukrainian soldiers,” he wrote.

Ukraine has recently made similar comments about piles of Russian bodies.

        There is no independent confirmation.

The US-based Maxar Technologies company has published pictures of Soledar from August and early January, showing the scale of destruction during the recent fighting.

The apparent differences in Russia’s official narrative surrounding the latest events around Soledar hint at divisions in the country’s military leadership, particularly between the Wagner Group and the defence ministry.

For his part, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky denied that Soledar had fallen.

“The terrorist state and its propagandists are trying to pretend” to have achieved some successes in Soledar, Mr Zelensky said in his nightly address on Wednesday, “but the fighting continues”.

“We do everything, without stopping for a single day, to strengthen Ukrainian defence. Our potential is growing,” he added.

      • Additional classified Biden documents are discovered

Additional classified Biden documents are discovered

A new set of secret federal documents have been discovered by the aides to US Vice President Joe Biden at a second location, adding to the White House’s mounting political embarrassment.

The first cache was found at a private office in Washington DC that Mr Biden used after his vice-presidency.

The matter is under review by the US Department of Justice.

Former President Donald Trump is facing a criminal investigation for allegedly mishandling classified files.

It was not yet clear on Wednesday when or where the additional tranche of files was found by Biden aides.

The original batch of about 10 documents was discovered in November at the Penn Biden Center, a think tank near the White House, but only came to light this week.

Those papers reportedly include US intelligence memos and briefing materials related to Ukraine, Iran and the United Kingdom.

The White House has not yet commented on the newly discovered batch. However, the find has been confirmed by the BBC’s US partner CBS and other US media.

During her daily press briefing on Wednesday, Biden press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to answer questions about the first cache of files.

“This is under review by the Department of Justice,” she said. “I’m not going to go beyond what the president shared yesterday.”

Mr Biden said on Tuesday he was “surprised” by the discovery of the records and was “co-operating” with the justice department’s review.

The controversy comes as the Democratic president faces scrutiny from a new Republican majority in the US House of Representatives.

“Now that Democrats no longer have one-party rule in Washington, oversight and accountability are coming,” James Comer, the new chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said on Wednesday.

The committee is launching inquiries into the president and his family, including a request for the White House to turn over documents and communications related to the classified files.

The law requires that all White House records, including classified ones, be turned over to the US National Archives after an administration’s time in office.Media caption,

Watch: Trump supporters upset with FBI search

The White House has said Mr Biden’s lawyers alerted the archives as soon as they recovered the classified materials at the think tank, and the agency retrieved them the next morning.

Last August, FBI agents searched the Florida home of Mr Biden’s predecessor and seized more than 10,000 files that Mr Trump had not turned over to the National Archives.

The justice department had issued a subpoena for the return of the sensitive files before the FBI showed up at Mar-a-Lago.

More than 300 documents with classified markings, including 18 marked top secret, were recovered by federal agents from the golf club in Palm Beach.

      • 1 and 9-year olds fatally shot in hostage situation

1 and 9-year olds fatally shot in hostage situation

Two children were killed after an apparent hostage situation at an apartment complex in Mississippi turned deadly on Monday, authorities said.

Marquez Griffin, 25, was arrested after a police standoff in Jonestown, during which he allegedly shot two children dead, identified as a 1-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy, and held a third child at gunpoint, according to a press release from the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office.

An off-duty sheriff’s deputy who lives in the area responded to the scene around 2 a.m. after hearing a call about a child who had been shot, authorities said.

There, police said they learned that a man had allegedly been holding a child at gunpoint.

At some point, police were able to convince the suspect to drop his weapon. They got the child to safety before the suspect was taken into custody, the sheriff’s office said.

It was only after Griffin was arrested that deputies discovered two children suffering from gunshot wounds inside the home, according to police.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a hospital, where the child later died, authorities said.

Police have not specified the relationship between the children or released their names.

Meanwhile, a family member identified the 1-year-old girl who died in the hospital as Averi Jones, according to WREG.

“I just want everyone to know that Averi Baby was a sweet baby. She didn’t deserve this,” the girl’s grandmother, Melrose Haile, reportedly said. “Her mom told me she was asleep and he put a pillow over her head and shot her in her head.”

She also said Griffin is a “friend” of Averi’s mother, and expressed shock at his alleged involvement in the incident.

“She told me they were friends and how could a friend do this to you?” Haile told the outlet.

Griffin had recently moved back to the area from Arlington, Texas, according to the sheriff’s office, which has yet to reveal a possible motive for the violence.

He is being held at the Coahoma County Adult Detention Center on charges of murder and aggravated assault, officials said.

It is not immediately clear if Griffin has entered a plea or retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf.

      • Unexpected remarks from Prince Harry regarding Lili and Archie’s relationship

Unexpected remarks from Prince Harry regarding Lili and Archie’s relationship

Prince Harry has made comparisons between his sibling rivalry with Prince William and the relationship between his children, Archie and Lilibet.

Opening up to Tom Bradby in his ITV interview on Sunday, the Duke of Sussex discussed his account of the Prince of Wales in his upcoming memoir, Spare

When Tom remarked this his account of his brother “begins with deep, deep love”, Harry responded: “Love but also separation. Which I think will really surprise people, the fact that we grew up – I mean our mother was dressing us in the same clothes to start with. William didn’t like that. I think I seem to remember I found it quite funny.

“But the older, younger sort of sibling rivalry as such, now is only really becoming real to me. For instance, I talk about the relationship between William and myself at Eton and the fact that he didn’t really want to know me, and you know, as the younger brother that sucks.”

He continued: “It’s like ‘Come on, you left me at Ludgrove and now I’m here at Eton – now we’re at the same school, let’s go’. He didn’t want anything to do with me and that hurt at the time. But now, well the gap between me and William is very similar to Archie and Lili, and to see Lili obsessed with Archie and Archie like ‘No, no Lili, I need my space, I need my space’, now I get it.

Harry compared Archie and Lilibet’s relationship to his with William

“I get how irritating the younger sibling can be to the older sibling. But in the moment, at the time, I didn’t really grasp that, I didn’t really realise it, but yes, I’ve always loved my brother.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Harry revealed that he has “no intentions” of hurting his brother and father, King Charles, with the revelations from his book. “I love my father. I love my brother. I love my family. I will always do,” he said. “Nothing of what I’ve done in this book or otherwise has ever been to, uh, any intention to harm them or hurt them. You know, the truth is something that I need to rely on.

The interview aired on ITV on Sunday

“After many, many years of lies being told about me and my family, there comes a point where, you know, again, going back to the relationship between certain members of the family and the tabloid press, those certain members have decided to get in the bed with the devil to rehabilitate their image.”

      • Expert-approved eyeshadow application tips for different eye shapes

Expert-approved eyeshadow application tips for different eye shapes

As someone with hooded eyelids, I know the struggles of mastering eye makeup firsthand. My lack of lid space (aka the length between my lash line and bottom of my brow) makes applying cut crease eyeshadow (the trend that accentuates the crease of the eye with makeup) seemingly impossible. When I concentrate shadow on the center of my lid, it almost always ends up smudged near my brow bone. And creating a symmetrical winged eyeliner look that doesn’t hide in the folds of my lids takes multiple tries.

I love a good YouTube or TikTok tutorial, but even when I follow the instructions perfectly, my results don’t look like the influencer’s. It was time to call in the pro makeup artists. The key is to adjust any makeup look so that it works for your eye shape, which can help avoid avoid frustration and smudges, explains Nick Lujan, makeup artist and director of artistry and education at Kevyn Aucoin Beauty. Here are makeup tips for different eye shapes that will help make your eye makeup application a success.

How to determine your eye shape

A few factors determine eye shape, including size, how much the eyes protrude from the eye socket, and the direction the inner and outer corners point, explains Lujan. “The size and shape of the eye socket area also determine the shape of the crease,” he says.

The easiest way to decipher your eye shape: Compare yours to this helpful guide, which spells out the different eye shapes and their distinctions, says makeup artist Ehlie Luna. Or find your celebrity eye twin. “Check out how makeup artists work with that particular celeb so you can steal their tricks and save yourself some of the guesswork,” Luna says.

        Makeup tips for almond eyes

Your eye shape: The iris (which is the colored part of the eye) will touch the top and bottom of your eyelids when looking straight ahead, says makeup artist Allison Kaye.

What the pros suggest: “Almond eyes can create any eye look easy because the inner and outer corners are on the same horizontal plane,” says Lujan. One of his favorite tips to make this shape pop is to apply a light eyeshadow color (think: Urban Decay 24/7 Moondust Eyeshadow in Cosmic) on the inner corners of the eyes.

Also, “to make almond eyes appear bigger and more open, avoid applying eyeliner or eye shadow all the way around your lids,” he says. “Keep the outer corners makeup-free.”

Liner notes: “Winged liner and your almond eyes are a match made in heaven,” says Luna. The outer corner of the eyes are naturally lifted, which makes creating symmetrical wings easy because the angular shape acts as a guideline. To accentuate your shape, draw eyeliner so that it’s thinnest on the inner and outer corners and slightly thicker on the middle two-thirds of the lash line, says Kaye.

        Makeup tips for round eyes

Your eye shape: A telltale characteristic of round eyes is that the whites of the eyes are visible above and below the iris.

What the pros suggest: “False lashes that are longer in the middle and shorter on the corners will help enhance your doll-eyed look,” Kaye says. (Avoid lashes that are full from the inner to the outer corner; they might look too heavy or give the illusion of smaller eyes.) You can also do this using a volumizing mascara, like Dior Iconic Overcurl Mascara. Focus application on the center of the lashes for a subtle doe-eyed effect.

Another eye-opening tactic: Apply a light shimmer shadow (think champagne, blush, or copper) on the center of the lid and then sweep it to the inner corners to make your eyes sparkle, Lujan says. “Light reflective eyeshadows make prominent areas stand out even further,” he adds. We love Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Eyeshadow for this tip because it includes four shimmer shades in each palette.

A matte smoky eye with darker hues on the outer corner of the eye is another great way to elongate the eyes. If a smoky eye sounds intimidating, know that it doesn’t have to be black, Lujan says. Try medium-tone matte browns instead. The Kevyn Aucoin Contour Eyeshadow Palettes are perfect for this.

Liner notes: For a sultry look, apply a dark-colored eyeliner on the waterline of the inner and outer corners of the eyes, then extend the ends toward the temples for a cat-eye effect, says makeup artist Judi Gabbay.

        Makeup tips for hooded eyes

Your eye shape: If you have hooded eyes, then you’ll notice that the crease of the eye is under a fold of skin when your eye is open.

What the pros suggest: Before applying eyeshadow, smooth on an eye primer. It’s a non-negotiable and the only way to avoid inevitable smudging or transferring, Kaye says.

To make lids look more lifted, apply a matte neutral eyeshadow, like gray or brown, to the eye socket area to give the illusion of a higher crease. This is the skin just beneath the brow bone and is visible right above your crease. “Keep your eyes open and look straight ahead into a mirror as you apply eye makeup,” Luna says. “If you close your eyes, the shadow will likely get lost in the folds once you open your eyes.”

Liner notes: Just as with eyeshadow, apply eyeliner with your eyes open while you look straight ahead. Keep your line thin to give the illusion of more lid space, says Gabbay.

        Makeup tips for monolids

Your eye shape: Monolids don’t have a crease, so the upper eyelid covers the inner parts of the eyes.

What the pros suggest: To create more dimension, blend a matte neutral brown shadow, like Mac Cosmetics Single Eyeshadow in Brun, in the eye socket, which creates the illusion of a crease, Lujan says, “then apply a shimmery eyeshadow to the middle of the lid, just beneath the neutral brown shade, and under the arch of the brow to highlight.” Or you can also skip the brown entirely and instead apply that shimmery shadow all over your lid as a wash of color.

Liner notes: “I like to do winged eyeliner for this shape to accentuate the inner or outer corner—or both,” Luna says. Be sure to curl your lashes if you want your eyes to appear more open and bright, Gabbay says.

        Makeup tips for downturned eyes

Your eye shape: The inner corners of your eyes are higher than the outer corners of your eyes. Princess Diana is the iconic example.

What the pros suggest: An easy way to accentuate and open up this shape is to create a lifted effect. To do this subtly, apply eyeliner or a dark shadow on the lash line, following the natural shape of your eye. When you get to the outer corner, slightly smudge the liner or shadow in an upward direction, Gabbay says.

Also, when you apply eyeshadow in general, place the lighter color toward the inner half of your eye and the darker color toward the outer half, Kaye says, “then blend up to the brow bone to make the eye look lifted.”

Liner notes: Winged eyeliner is a great way to lift the corners of your eyes. To find the correct angle for your wing, place the handle of a makeup brush diagonally across your face so that it touches the bottom corner of the nostril and the outer corner of the eye, says Lujan. Then sketch your eyeliner along the handle.

        Makeup tips for upturned eyes

Your eye shape: Upturned eyes have outer corners that are higher than the inner corners of the eyes.

What the pros suggest: When applying eye makeup, follow the upward angle of your eye shape, blending or smudging it up and out. “Otherwise you’ll take away from your gorgeous natural cat eye,” Gabbay says.

If you like falsies, opt for a strip with shorter lashes on the inner corner and longer lashes at the outer corner. You can also do this with mascara by concentrating product on the outer corner. Opt for lengthening formula, like Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara.

Liner notes: “I like to line the entire upper lash line, and the inner corner for a cat eye effect,” Luna says. A great eyeliner that glides on the lid is Treslucé Intenso Gel Liner.

      • Truth behind Princess Kate’s heartfelt engagement ring

Truth behind Princess Kate’s heartfelt engagement ring

Princess Diana’s famous sapphire and diamond engagement ring, which was widely believed to have been inherited by Prince Harry, was used by Prince William to propose to Princess Kate.

Now, the Duke of Sussex has set the record straight regarding the heartfelt story that he handed the jewel to his older brother ahead of his proposal in Kenya in 2010.

In his memoir Spare, which was released in Spain on Thursday, the royal admitted the entire story was “nonsense” – he had not inherited his mother’s ring, and therefore, there was no tender moment when Harry handed it over to William in a selfless gesture that acknowledged his true love with Kate.

William had asked for the sapphire after their mother died in a car crash in France in 1997, which Harry did not object to.

Princess Diana’s ring was inherited by Prince William, not Prince Harry

Harry explained that the first time he was aware that William and Kate were engaged was when he had returned to the UK and Buckingham Palace made the announcement in November 2010. He revealed that the brothers had spent time together during a trip to Lesotho in June, shortly before the royal proposed, but William had not mentioned his plans to get down on one knee.

He added that he wished his brother the best for his upcoming wedding but he wanted to be a young husband himself and assumed that he would be the first to marry.

William and Kate began dating at St Andrews University but they had an eight-year on-off relationship before the royal proposed.

William proposed to Kate with the sapphire ring in 2010

After announcing their engagement, the couple sat down for an interview with journalist Tom Bradby where King Charles III’s son explained: “We’ve talked about this happening for a while so Kate wasn’t in the dark over it all. We’ve been planning it for a year if not longer, it was just finding the right time. As most couples say, it’s all about timing.

“I had my military career and I really wanted to concentrate on my flying, and I couldn’t have done this if I was still doing my training. So I’ve got that out of the way, and Kate’s in a good place in terms of work and where she wants to be, and we just both decided that now would be a really good time.”

      • Prince Harry’s book and TV interviews leaves Prince William “devastated,” – Reports

Prince Harry’s book and TV interviews leaves Prince William “devastated,” – Reports

The charges made by Prince Harry in his upcoming memoir, Spare, and subsequent TV interviews have reportedly left Prince William “devastated.”

In the book, the Duke of Sussex has shared details of a physical fight between him and William, and claims that the Prince of Wales was sceptical of his relationship with Meghan Markle from the beginning.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Monday, The Sunday Times‘ Royal Editor, Roya Nikkhah said: “[William] is devastated. The quote I used yesterday was ‘he’s burning inside’. That is how he’s feeling. He’s chosen not to go toe-to-toe with his brother and not retaliate, it’s not what he does.”

She added: “He’s devastated that so much personal stuff has come out, particularly given my understanding of what he knows about his brother, his experiences with his brother, how he looked after him. But I think that he feels very strongly that it’s just not right to come out and go ‘No, this didn’t happen, that happened in a different way’. That’s not how he rolls.”

Prince William was last seen publicly on Christmas Day

Prince Harry’s interview with Tom Bradby also aired on ITV1 on Sunday evening, in which he claimed that he had never accused the royal family of racism, and that he does not think they are racist.

After his and Meghan’s interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, in which they said that a member of the royal family had asked Harry what colour their baby was likely to be, the couple were widely seen to be suggesting that some within the institution were racist.

And during Harry’s appearance on CBS’ 60 Minutes with Anderson Cooper, he revealed that he is currently not speaking with William and that it had been “a while” since he last spoke to his brother and father, King Charles.

Yet there is cause for hope as British history is littered with rifts between royal brothers far worse than Harry and William’s schism. Here are six fraternal fallouts which turned really nasty.

      • King Charles’s anxiety-reduction technique is revealed

King Charles’s anxiety-reduction technique is revealed

Prince Harry has made a number of shocking allegations in his bombshell memoir Spare, which finally hit the shelves on 10 January.

As well as detailing an alleged physical assault between him and his brother Prince William and writing about his relationship with his sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales, Prince Harry opens up about his father, King Charles. Most poignant is an extract dedicated to the monarch’s longest-serving companion – a teddy bear

Prince Harry recalls King Charles taking his teddy “everywhere”, writing that it was the same teddy bear his father took to Gordonstoun – the school where the King was bullied as a boy. His Majesty attended Gordonstoun, a boarding school in Scotland, from the age of 13, following in the footsteps of his father Prince Philip. And speaking on a recent ITV documentary called Charles: Our New King, one of Charles’ former classmates claimed a young Prince Charles was regularly targeted by bullies, and was even physically attacked during a rugby match.

Prince Charles pictured at preparatory school in 1957Harry writes in his autobiography: “Teddy went everywhere with Pa. It was a pitiful object, with broken arms and dangly threads, holes patched up here and there.”He added: “Teddy expressed eloquently, better than Pa ever could, the essential loneliness of his childhood. While the idea of the monarch keeping a soft toy from his childhood may seem surprising to some, the act of keeping a sentimental ‘cuddly’ toy is not an unusual practice. A survey carried out in 2019 suggests that 44% of adults still have their childhood teddies and 34% still sleep with their soft toys every night.

Prince Harry recalls his father taking his teddy “everywhere Speaking exclusively to HELLO!, Principal Psychologist at DH Consulting Dannielle Haig, said: “We often instigate lifelong coping mechanisms in childhood. When things are difficult or anxiety-inducing, humans often use certain behaviours to help ‘self-soothe’ the uncomfortableness.”Some people self-soothe with drinking, smoking, food, or shopping and of course, cuddling teddy bears.”Dannielle added: “There isn’t anything particularly unusual about finding comfort in a teddy bear and it can be far healthier than many other ‘adult’ coping strategies.”

The spokesman for the rebel Tigrayan forces in northern Ethiopia says they have handed over their heavy weapons in line with the ceasefire agreement signed in South Africa in November.

Getachew Reda wrote on Twitter that the transfer had been confirmed by an African Union monitoring and verification team.

The move is central to the agreement along with services being restored in the war-torn region where hundreds of thousands of people were killed.

No word on South Sudan journalists held over Kiir video

Six journalists detained by the South Sudanese authorities a week ago are still being held incognito despite numerous calls by rights groups for their release.

They were arrested earlier this month on suspicion of circulating a video that appeared to show President Salva Kiir urinating on himself at a public event in December.

Nothing has been heard from the six journalists since their arrest despite the efforts of multiple groups to reach them.

By law, the South Sudanese authorities are required to present suspects before a judge no more than 24 hours after arresting them.

The journalists are thought to be held at the National Security headquarters in the capital Juba.

The building, known locally as the Blue House, doubles up as a dreaded detention centre where political prisoners are detained – sometimes — for years.

The traditional leader of the Voodoo cult, Daagbo Hounon Houna II, mingled with local adherents and tourists during the festival.

There were rituals involving prayers and libations. Followers also watched Zangbeto rituals — whirling dancers dressed as guardians of the night.

There were also displays of fetishes that are said to have supernatural powers.

      • How to get out of something you’ve already agreed to

How to get out of something you’ve already agreed to

It’s tricky when we find ourselves wanting to get out of something we’ve agreed to. We don’t like letting people down and feeling like we’re “flaky” or “lazy”. Side note: we’re not.

If you need to get out something you’ve agreed to, it’s typically because:

        • You’ve overcommitted
        • It’s not your skill set or you’re not the right person.
        • Your circumstances have changed.
        • The nature of the ask has changed.
        • You said yes reflexively and now have a better sense of your bandwidth/desire.
        • You tell people what you think they want to hear to look good or get them off your back.

It’s easy to judge yourself for “reneging” on an agreement, but you’re human. Sometimes we humans belatedly realise that we don’t need or want to do something we’ve already agreed to.

It’s also possible that you’re a people pleaser, especially if having to get out of things happens on the regular. Your people pleasing includes being afraid of disappointing or angering the person, or fear of looking like a Bad Person. Keep in mind that we are socialised and conditioned from early childhood to be people pleasers. We also learn shameful messages that effectively force us to “push on” and “go ahead” to look like Good People

So, how do you get out of something you’ve agreed to?

        Be honest.

Don’t dick them around and keep leading them to believe you’re still going ahead when you aren’t. Don’t keep avoiding them in the hope they’ll get the message. If possible, communicate via the original mode of communication from when they asked you. Texts, while they seem like the easy way to dodge conflict and confrontation, are major sources of miscommunication. Be honest, but don’t feel the need to tell them your life story. Cut to the chase.

This is where saying “I hold my hands up…” comes in very handy. e.g. I hold my hands up and admit that I’ve overcommitted myself.

With the benefit of hindsight, I shouldn’t have answered on the spot and needed to check in with my schedule and what’s on plate.

Now that I understand what’s involved, this isn’t my skill set. Or, Now that I understand what’s involved, I know I’m not the right person for this.

When I agreed to this, you’d said it was X, but now it’s Y. As a result, I’m not going to be able to do [what I agreed to].

Apologise if needed. But don’t over-egg it (or beat yourself up).

I know you might feel bad about having to let someone down. Still, if you milk the apology dry, it will be the other party that winds up feeling bad. Generally speaking, it’s likely that what you’re saying no to really isn’t that deep. Sure, you have to get out of doing something you agreed to, but it’s not a crime. Contrary to popular opinion, you’re also not hurting the person’s feelings by saying no. Apologise for overcommitting (or whatever), not for saying no. Don’t shame yourself for saying no or for having to retract what you agreed to.

Say what you can do, if applicable.

Sometimes we realise that we don’t have the bandwidth to be involved in something to the degree someone might want or expect us to be. We don’t have to offer an alternative, but if we want to, we can. Examples:

I won’t be able to [the original ask], but I can be involved by doing X. Let me know if this works for you.

I won’t be able to stay for an entire week over Christmas, but I will be there for three days.

I won’t be able to run a stall on the day of the market, but I can come by and help set up the day before for a couple of hours if that works for you?

Don’t leave it until the last minute.

I know it can be a pain in the bum and cause you to break out in a sweat, but let people know where they stand ASAP. If you don’t, you’re either going to force yourself to go ahead or leave communicating your no right down to the wire. If anything’s going to frustrate and piss someone off, it’s your continuing to make out like you’re going to do something and then backing out at the last minute.

You are allowed to say no, and you’re also allowed to change your mind.

That doesn’t mean the people on the receiving end need to be all-singing and all-dancing. It also doesn’t mean that because you’re allowed to change your mind and that no one is entitled to a yes that you can throw your yes around without being responsible for the consequences.

        For the future:

Utilise the power of six magic words: Let me get back to you.

Make a firm commitment to yourself that you don’t give on-the-spot yeses. This makes it super easy to know when to say no or to ask for more time. For instance, I don’t make decisions on the fly that essentially require me to make an ongoing financial commitment. This means that if someone turns up on my doorstep or stops me in the supermarket, I say no to their offer. Depending on what it is, I ask for more information or whether I can for instance, if I’m interested, sign up or donate from home. 99% of the time, their answer is no. And that just shores up my no. If you can’t give me time and space to make a decision, I’m not going to emotionally blackmail or pressure myself into saying yes.

Notice and pay attention to the presence of what I call the people-pleaser feelings.

Anxiety, guilt, obligation, resentment, overwhelm, overloaded, feeling trapped, etc., are clear indicators that you’re doing what might seem like a “good thing” but for the wrong reason(s). If you say yes based on the people-pleaser feelings, you are guaranteed to feel bad about what you’ve agreed to.

Pay attention to the chatter in your head.

Notice irritability, anger, resentment, judgement, self-criticism. Are you worried about how you will be perceived by others? If so, saying yes as is would not be right for you. Make it a desire, or say no.

        Avoid ambiguity

If you’re dealing with someone who seems to take it as a foregone conclusion that you’re going to do something, it can feel a tad overwhelming and anxiety-inducing to so much as contemplate saying no. Aside from being mindful of being railroaded (or emotionally blackmailing yourself into something), communicate clearly. If you’re ambiguous, certain assertive and aggressive folk take this as a yes. Read more about the landmarks of boundaried communication.

Be boundaried about help and support.

Giving help or support doesn’t necessarily mean getting involved in all of the nitty-grittys. So you don’t have to be the lead person or do “everything”. Work out and state how much or how little you want to be involved. Remember, if you don’t feel good after you give help or support, it’s because you’re not giving.

If agreeing to something or your level of involvement means breaching your boundaries and encroaching on your well-being, that’s a very good reason to amend/cancel your original yes. When you’re clear with your yes and no, it manages expectations–yours and other people’s.

You always have the option of saying no, and it’s more than okay to change your mind. But use the data from experiences where you agree to something and then have to get out of it to make better choices. Positively learn from the experience instead of shaming you. The more authentically you say yes and no, the less you have to go around backtracking.
