England fail to secure their place in the Euro 2024 knockout stages

England missed a prime opportunity to secure their spot in the Euro 2024 knockout stages as Group C winners, settling for a disappointing draw against Denmark in Frankfurt.

Despite an early lead, Gareth Southgate’s team delivered a lackluster performance, leaving them fortunate to escape with a point.

Harry Kane opened the scoring for England in the 18th minute, marking his fourth successive major tournament goal. However, instead of building on their advantage, England reverted to a defensive posture, allowing Denmark to dominate the proceedings. This cautious approach has been a recurring theme under Southgate’s management.

Denmark capitalized on England’s retreat, with Morten Hjulmand equalizing with a powerful 25-yard strike in the 34th minute. England’s response was limited, though Phil Foden did hit the post after the break. Despite remaining at the top of Group C, England’s performance against Denmark raised serious questions about their credentials as potential Euro 2024 favorites.

The match highlighted significant issues within the England squad, particularly in midfield, where they were consistently outmaneuvered by Denmark. Veteran midfielder Christian Eriksen orchestrated the game for Denmark, exposing the weaknesses in the central partnership of Declan Rice and Trent Alexander-Arnold. This combination, which appeared out of sync, is unlikely to be seen again in future matches.

Even Jude Bellingham, who had been instrumental in England’s previous victory over Serbia, struggled to make an impact. The overall disorganization and frequent errors on the pitch drew the ire of England fans, who voiced their displeasure with loud jeering and a hostile send-off at the final whistle.

Southgate’s frustration was evident as he made four substitutions with more than 20 minutes remaining, an uncharacteristic move for the usually measured manager. The decision to substitute Harry Kane in the 69th minute, with England still searching for a winner, was particularly surprising. Phil Foden, who had been England’s most threatening player, was also replaced, further perplexing fans and analysts alike.

England’s complaints about the playing surface, which deteriorated early in the match, offered little solace for their subpar performance. The team’s tendency to become subdued rather than inspired after scoring resurfaced, a flaw that nearly cost them against Serbia and proved costly against Denmark.

The draw leaves England needing significant improvements in their upcoming match against Slovenia to secure their place in the knockout stages. While they remain in contention, their display against Denmark was far from the standard required to make a serious impact in Euro 2024.

As the tournament progresses, England will need to address their tactical inconsistencies and rediscover the form that made them contenders. The path to success in Germany is still open, but only if Southgate and his team can learn from their mistakes and deliver performances worthy of their ambitions.

  • We won’t allow you to steal from the public purse – Dep. NDC Organiser to gov’t

We won’t allow you to steal from the public purse – Dep. NDC Organiser to gov’t

Deputy National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Osman Ayariga, has issued a strong statement condemning the Akufo-Addo administration’s alleged attempts to seize control of state assets.

Mr Ayariga emphasized that the youth of Ghana are ready to resist such actions, which they believe are not in the nation’s best interest.

In a recent media interview, Mr Ayariga criticized the current government for failing to uphold its promise to protect the state’s finances.

Instead, he accused the administration of exploiting the nation’s treasury for personal gain. “We’ll allow people who promised to protect the purse to steal the purse and all its contents in it. Where does this end?” he questioned.

Ayariga’s comments were made in the context of a growing controversy over the sale of certain hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Limited, a company owned by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

The issue has sparked public outcry and protest, notably led by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu.

The Deputy National Organiser urged all Ghanaians to stand united against actions that undermine the country’s welfare. He highlighted the youth’s determination to oppose any move by the Akufo-Addo administration to consolidate control over state assets.

“This Akufo-Addo wants to take over everything from this country and amass it for themselves, and the youth of the country will not sit down and allow it to continue,” Mr Ayariga stated emphatically.

Ayariga called for collective action, encouraging citizens to resist policies and decisions detrimental to Ghana’s prosperity. His statements reflect a broader sentiment of dissatisfaction and mistrust towards the current administration’s handling of state resources.

The controversy surrounding the sale of SSNIT-owned hotels to Rock City Limited has intensified scrutiny on the government’s financial dealings and raised questions about transparency and accountability.

Mr Ayariga’s remarks have added fuel to the ongoing debate, galvanizing youth and opposition support against perceived governmental overreach.

NDC supporters allegedly assault TESCON member in Kumasi

Nana Boakye, a second-year communications student at the Christian Service University, has sustained a head injury following an alleged assault by supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kumasi.

The incident occurred during a public lecture commemorating the university’s 50th anniversary, which featured former President and 2024 NDC flagbearer John Mahama as the keynote speaker.

The tension began when Mahama criticized the campaign of his political rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing it as a “concert party.”

This remark drew applause from many attendees, but Nana Boakye, an organizer for the NPP’s student wing TESCON, voiced his disapproval. He allegedly retorted to Mahama’s comment, leading to a confrontation.

Boakye recounted the ordeal, stating, “I responded to Mahama’s statement, saying ‘Mahama wo boa’ na wo b3 wi’ [Meaning Mahama you’re lying, you will lose]. A macho man approached me, warned me to be careful, and when I asked what I had done, he slapped me in front of the former President. As I was leaving the auditorium, I was attacked again, this time more severely, resulting in injuries to my head and stomach.”

Photographs show Boakye with his head wrapped in a bandage and his arm in a splint, reflecting the severity of the assault.

Efforts to shield him from further harm were unsuccessful as angry party supporters forced their way into the office where he had sought refuge.

Paul Yandoh, a spokesperson for the NPP in the Ashanti Region, expressed profound disappointment over the incident, emphasizing that such violence has no place in democratic discourse. Despite the gravity of the situation, Boakye has yet to file an official complaint with the police.

  • Unprotected gay, transgender sexual relations partly responsible for rising HIV infections – AIDS Commission

Unprotected gay, transgender sexual relations partly responsible for rising HIV infections – AIDS Commission

The Ghana AIDS Commission has expressed concern over the low rate of condom use among sexually active individuals, citing it as a contributing factor to the recent increase in HIV infections in the country.

According to the Commission, the rise in HIV cases is particularly noticeable among men who have sex with men, where condom use is reportedly low.

This population group is seen as a “bridging population,” potentially spreading the virus to others in the community through bisexual behavior.

“For instance, if we take men who have sex with men, the survey we conducted shows that about 50% of them are young people who are bisexuals. So they may be sleeping with men but are also sleeping with women and those women have other partners and they continue to spread HIV. So, the reality is that HIV is an issue in Ghana. We have not ended it yet, it has not stopped and transmission is still occurring,” he said.

Dr. Stephen Ayisi Addo, Programmes Manager of the National AIDS Control Programme, highlighted the need for increased education on the importance of condom use and HIV prevention.

He noted that while progress has been made in HIV awareness and treatment, there is still a lack of understanding among the youth about the seriousness of the disease.

The Commission’s concerns come as Ghana recorded 17,000 new HIV infections and 12,000 related deaths in 2023. Dr. Addo emphasized the importance of addressing these issues to prevent further transmission and reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS in Ghana.

  • Full WhatsApp chats between Jakpa and AG admitted into evidence by court

Full WhatsApp chats between Jakpa and AG admitted into evidence by court

The High Court in Accra has admitted into evidence the complete WhatsApp messages exchanged between Richard Jakpa, the third accused, and Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame.

This decision was announced by trial judge Justice Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, who underscored that the court had previously admitted portions of the WhatsApp chats from the third accused and could not reject what the prosecution termed as the entire conversation.

Justice Asare-Botwe emphasized that while the court has admitted the full messages, it retains the discretion to assess the weight and relevance of this evidence.

This point was particularly pertinent as the defense raised concerns over the authenticity and completeness of the messages presented by the prosecution.

During the court proceedings on Tuesday, June 18, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa highlighted the volume of messages sent by Mr. Jakpa compared to the limited responses from the Attorney-General.

The DPP argued for the admission of all of Mr. Jakpa’s WhatsApp messages to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the communications between the parties involved.

Mr. Jakpa, under cross-examination, admitted that he had initiated contact with the Attorney-General prior to the trial. He disclosed that he obtained Mr. Dame’s contact information through his cousin, Supreme Court Judge Justice Yonny Kulendi.

However, he also acknowledged that the messages presented in court did not encompass the entire conversation and were selectively chosen based on their relevance to his defense.

Counsel for Mr. Jakpa, Mr. Thaddeus Sory, raised objections to the DPP’s motion to submit the full WhatsApp conversation into evidence. He argued that the defense required additional time to thoroughly review the messages to ensure their accuracy and context.

Despite these objections, the court ruled in favor of admitting the full set of messages, reinforcing the importance of transparency and comprehensive evidence in the trial.

This ruling has introduced a new dimension to the high-profile case, as the court now has access to the complete communication between Mr. Jakpa and the Attorney-General.

  • 7.3m Ghanaians are multi-dimensionally poor, lack access to education, health and others – GSS

7.3m Ghanaians are multi-dimensionally poor, lack access to education, health and others – GSS

The latest Ghana Multidimensional Poverty Report, published by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), presents a sobering overview of poverty across the nation, identifying employment and living conditions as the most significant factors contributing to multidimensional poverty.

The report reveals that 7.3 million Ghanaians, representing 24.3% of the household population, are living in multidimensional poverty, which considers deprivations in education, health, and living standards. Alarmingly, 43.8% of these individuals are experiencing severe poverty.

Employment and living conditions were found to be the leading contributors to multidimensional poverty, with their impact ranging from 47.8% to 12.7% and 35.9% to 15.5%, respectively, across various regions.

Omar Seidu, Director of Social Statistics at GSS, emphasized the link between educational attainment and poverty, stating, “Four out of ten households where the head of household has no education are multidimensionally poor.”

The disparity between rural and urban poverty is striking. In rural areas, 36.7% of residents fall below the poverty threshold, with the severity of poverty being nearly identical in both rural (44.0%) and urban (43.4%) settings.

The Savannah Region has the highest proportion of multidimensionally poor households at 49.5%, nearly double the national average. Despite this, the Ashanti Region has the highest number of multidimensionally poor individuals, totaling 959,031.

Seidu noted, “The Ashanti Region tops the list in actual numbers because of its large population, accounting for 18% of the multidimensionally poor.”

Nine regions exhibit alarming poverty levels, with over a quarter of their populations facing multiple deprivations. These regions are Savannah (49.5%), North East (48.1%), Upper East (43.0%), Oti (40.8%), Northern (38.4%), Upper West (37.4%), Volta (27.3%), Western North (27.0%), and Western (25.7%).

Employment contributes 32.6% and living conditions 27.9% to multidimensional poverty. Health insurance also plays a critical role, accounting for 21.5% of poverty indicators.

Poverty incidence is higher among female-headed households (27.0%) compared to male-headed households (23.0%). Younger household heads below 25 years and older heads above 60 years are more susceptible to poverty.

Educational attainment significantly affects poverty levels. The report indicates, “Four in ten multidimensionally poor persons have never attended school.” Households whose heads have only basic education have a poverty incidence of 20.0%, which is significantly higher than those with tertiary education (7.1%).

Households headed by individuals working in agriculture face the highest poverty rates (34.3%), compared to those in the services sector, who are more than 5.5 times better off, and those in the industry sector, who are 3.8 times better off.

  • Jakpa hot, tries to stop court from admitting all his WhatsApp messages to A-G

Jakpa hot, tries to stop court from admitting all his WhatsApp messages to A-G

During the ongoing ambulance procurement trial today, Richard Jakpa, the third accused, has raised objections to the court’s admission of his WhatsApp messages to Attorney-General Godfred Dame, claiming that the evidence has been tampered with.

During court proceedings on Thursday, June 20, Jakpa alleged that the WhatsApp messages submitted by the Attorney-General were altered and did not represent the full context of their communications. This assertion has sparked controversy and raised questions about the integrity of the evidence presented.

Jakpa’s counsel, Thaddeus Sory, argued against the tendering of the WhatsApp chats, claiming that they did not encompass the full conversation between Jakpa and the Attorney-General.

However, Sory did not specify which chats were omitted, leading to a pointed response from Director of Public Prosecutions Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa. She described Sory’s objections as a “bare assertion,” noting that neither Jakpa nor his counsel provided details on the allegedly missing messages.

Moreover, she highlighted that Jakpa himself admitted to not tendering the complete set of WhatsApp chats, choosing instead to submit only those messages he deemed beneficial to his case.

Despite the objections, the court overruled Jakpa’s challenge. Trial judge Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botwe ruled that the exhibit was relevant and that no prejudice would result from tendering the full set of WhatsApp messages.

She underscored that Jakpa had selectively submitted messages, and it was important for the court to consider the entire conversation to assess the context accurately.

Jakpa also claimed that the number of messages he sent to the Attorney-General was less than the 68 presented in court. The judge responded by stating that the messages were already admitted into evidence and that she would count them to verify the number.

The court had earlier admitted 68 WhatsApp messages from Jakpa, which he claimed were tampered with to misrepresent his communications. Jakpa’s objections and allegations have added a new layer of complexity to the trial, as the court now must consider the validity and completeness of the digital evidence.

Meanwhile, the third accused claims the Attorney-General arranged through Justice Kulendi for a meeting.

The Director of Public Prosecutions asked him to look at the various exhibits he had put before the court and indicate where the Attorney-General is seen inviting him to a meeting.

He was unable to indicate and said that Justice Kulendi called him informing him that the A-G was in his house and therefore, he should come.

12,480 Ghanaians died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2023 – AIDS Commission

The latest report from the Ghana AIDS Commission reveals that a total of 12,480 Ghanaians lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses in 2023.

This figure highlights the ongoing challenges faced in combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country.

The report also revealed that 17,774 individuals in Ghana contracted HIV in the same year, with females accounting for a significant majority of new infections.

Of the newly infected individuals, 11,317 were females, while 6,457 were males. This data includes various age groups, with 4,869 youths aged 15 to 24, 1,698 children under 15, 1,520 adolescents aged 10 to 19, and 16,076 adults over 15.

Despite efforts to reduce new HIV infections, Ghana has not met its annual target of a 17 percent reduction. To address this, the Ghana AIDS Commission has set a new target of a 41 percent reduction in new HIV infections between 2023 and 2030.

As of 2023, an estimated 334,095 people in Ghana were living with HIV, with females outnumbering males. This includes 17,550 children under 14, 16,381 adolescents aged 10 to 19, 33,245 young adults aged 15 to 24, and 316,545 adults aged 15 and above.

The report emphasized the importance of increasing efforts to combat AIDS, especially among the economically active population aged 15 to 49.

It also highlighted the need for Ghana to remain committed to achieving the global 95-95-95 targets by 2025, which aim to have 95 percent of people living with HIV aware of their status, 95 percent of those diagnosed on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 95 percent of those on ART achieving viral suppression.

The Ghana AIDS Commission called for a collective effort to address the AIDS epidemic and emphasized that it should be a national priority.

Mahama is the only Vice President whose boss had him investigated for corruption – Gideon Boako

An economist and spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Gideon Boako, has stirred controversy with his recent accusation against former President John Dramani Mahama, labeling him as the most corrupt Vice President in Ghana’s history.

In an interview with Kumasi-based Hello FM on Thursday, June 20, Dr Boako criticized Mahama’s tenure as Vice President, alleging that it was marked by numerous corruption scandals and financial mismanagement.

He pointed to various instances during Mahama’s term where funds were reportedly misappropriated, leading to substantial economic losses for the country.

Dr Boako emphasized that such corruption undermined public trust and hindered Ghana’s development. He highlighted the fact that Mahama was the only Vice President in Ghana’s history whose President set up an investigation on him for allegations of corruption.

“I must state on record that between Mr. Mahama who is the most corrupt Vice President because of his conduct in terms of corruption, you can’t compare that to any Vice President in the country’s history. He is the only Vice President whose President set up an investigation on him for allegations of corruption,” Boako stated.

“This didn’t happen during Ackaah’s era and all the rest that followed after him. So if that is anything to go by, Mr. Mahama is the only Vice President whose President accepts that he is corrupt,” he added.

Despite a 14.8 percent reduction in new HIV infections over the past decade, Ghana has not met its annual target of a 17 percent reduction. Dr. Atuahene emphasized the need for more ambitious goals, setting a target of a 41 percent reduction in new HIV infections between 2023 and 2030.

As of 2023, an estimated 334,095 people in Ghana were living with HIV, with females outnumbering males. The affected population includes 17,550 children under 14, 16,381 adolescents aged 10 to 19, 33,245 young adults aged 15 to 24, and 316,545 adults aged 15 and above.

Despite progress in HIV treatment availability, 12,480 Ghanaians died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2023. Dr. Atuahene emphasized that these deaths were preventable with access to appropriate treatments.

Ghana remains committed to achieving the global 95-95-95 targets by 2025, aiming to have 95 percent of people living with HIV aware of their status, 95 percent of those diagnosed on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 95 percent of those on ART achieving viral suppression. In 2023, Ghana achieved 65.3 percent, 69.4 percent, and 89.0 percent for the respective targets.

Dr. Atuahene called for increased efforts to combat AIDS, particularly among the economically active population aged 15 to 49. He emphasized that addressing the AIDS epidemic should be a national priority in Ghana.

17, 774 people got infected with HIV in 2023 – AIDS Commission

New data from the 2023 national and sub-national HIV and AIDS estimates and projections reveal that 17,774 individuals in Ghana contracted HIV last year, comprising 6,457 males and 11,317 females.

This data was disclosed by Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, during a press briefing in Accra.

The newly infected individuals include 4,869 youths aged 15 to 24, 1,698 children under 15, 1,520 adolescents aged 10 to 19, and 16,076 adults over 15. Despite a 14.8 percent reduction in new HIV infections over the past decade, Ghana has fallen short of its annual target of a 17 percent reduction.

Dr. Atuahene highlighted the ambitious goal set for the future: a 41 percent reduction in new HIV infections between 2023 and 2030.

As of 2023, an estimated 334,095 people in Ghana were living with HIV, with females (218,204) outnumbering males (115,891). The affected population includes 17,550 children under 14, 16,381 adolescents aged 10 to 19, 33,245 young adults aged 15 to 24, and 316,545 adults aged 15 and above. The HIV population in Ghana increased by nine percent from 2013 to 2023 and is projected to rise by 6.8 percent by 2030.

The projections also indicate that 12,480 Ghanaians succumbed to AIDS-related illnesses in 2023. Dr. Atuahene emphasized that these deaths were preventable, pointing to the availability of treatments that can halt the disease’s progression and prevent fatalities.

Despite these challenges, Ghana remains committed to achieving the global 95-95-95 targets by 2025, which aim to have 95 percent of people living with HIV aware of their status, 95 percent of those diagnosed on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 95 percent of those on ART achieving viral suppression. In 2023, Ghana achieved 65.3 percent for the first target, 69.4 percent for the second, and 89.0 percent for the third.

Dr. Atuahene underscored the importance of prioritizing the fight against AIDS, particularly since the most affected demographic, those aged 15 to 49, constitutes the economically active population. He called for a collective effort to halt the AIDS epidemic in Ghana, stressing that it should be a national priority.

$30m was in John Kumah’s bank account when he died – NPP member

Adum Bawuah, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made shocking revelations about the late Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah, claiming that the minister had $30 million in his account at the time of his death.

In an interview on TOP FM, Bawuah expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in the country and criticized members of his own party.

He alleged that while members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are corrupt, NPP members are “100 times corrupt” and are actively stealing from the state.

Mr Bawuah went on to claim that upon John Kumah’s death, an investigation into his finances revealed the staggering amount of $30 million in his account.

He questioned how Dr Kumah could have amassed such wealth after just three years of working as a deputy minister.

John Ampontuah Kumah, who served as the Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, passed away a few months ago.

His burial service, held on May 18, was a solemn occasion attended by government officials, family members, and constituents who praised him for his contributions to the Ejisu Constituency.

During the service, Kumah’s widow, Lilian Kumah, paid tribute to her late husband, describing him as her “everything.”

Freddie Blay’s son has bigger plans for Labadi Beach Hotel – Ablakwa

In a recent social media post dated June 19, 2024, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has made further allegations against Kwaw Worsemao Blay, son of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Freddie Blay.

Ablakwa published company registration documents showing that Kwaw Worsemao Blay’s company, Spartan-Ives Limited, was among the shortlisted entities in the controversial sale of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels.

The MP’s post suggests that Kwaw Blay’s involvement in the SSNIT hotels sale comes after his alleged legal battle over a popular beachfront belonging to the state-owned Labadi Beach Hotel.

Ablakwa’s post reads, “Apparently, Freddie Blay’s son, Kwaw, has bigger plans for Labadi Beach Hotel beyond controlling its lucrative beachfront.”

He further states, “This latest information pointing to a spirited effort by Mr. Kwaw Blay to purchase SSNIT’s hotels after his infamous beachfront encroachment is certainly bound to create fresh credibility crisis for Mr. Freddie Blay who claimed only last week, amidst issuing threats, that his sons have never been interested in capturing or owning SSNIT’s hotels.”

Ablakwa has dared Freddie Blay to proceed to court over the allegations he has put out so far. He recently led a protest against the planned sale of some SSNIT hotels to Rock City Limited, a hotel conglomerate owned by agric minister Bryan Acheampong, and has submitted a 15-point petition to the presidency demanding the sale be canceled.

He is also pushing a private members’ bill against public officials buying state assets.

More than 1,000 children in forced marriages in Nkwanta North – GSS

A recent 2023 report from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has revealed a concerning trend in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region, where more than 1,000 children aged between 12 and 17 years have been involved in marital unions.

Out of the 1,014 children involved in early marriage, 43 per cent were boys, while 57 per cent were girls.

This data sheds light on the prevalence of child marriages in the region, with Nkwanta North District accounting for 27.3 per cent of the 3,728 cases reported across eight municipal and district assemblies in the Oti Region.

Ms. Esther Hammond, Head of the Gender Department at the Oti Regional Coordinating Council (ORCC), expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing its detrimental effects on the overall development of the children.

She highlighted the risks of poor health outcomes, increased maternal and child mortality, entrenched gender inequality, disrupted education, and perpetuation of the cycle of poverty associated with early marriages.

To address this issue, the ORCC, with funding support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), initiated stakeholder engagement activities.

A recent consultative meeting was held with community leaders to raise awareness about the negative effects of child marriage and to develop tailored action plans to prevent such practices.

The meeting, attended by 72 participants from six communities, aimed to equip community leaders with the knowledge and tools needed to advocate for policy changes and local interventions.

Ms. Hammond emphasized the importance of collective action in ending child marriage, stating that empowering community leaders could ensure the protection and well-being of children in the district.

Moving forward, stakeholders have resolved to establish child protection committees and collaborate closely with school authorities to address the root causes of child marriages.

  • Admission of Jakpa’s 68 WhatsApp messages to Dame to be ruled by court today

Admission of Jakpa’s 68 WhatsApp messages to Dame to be ruled by court today

The Accra High Court is set to decide on the potential admission of 68 WhatsApp messages sent by Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ongoing ambulance procurement trial, to Attorney-General Godfred Dame, along with two responses from the AG.

During the proceedings on Tuesday, June 18, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, emphasized the significant volume of messages sent by Mr. Jakpa compared to the Attorney-General’s limited responses. The DPP aimed to introduce all the WhatsApp messages sent by Mr. Jakpa into evidence.

Mr. Jakpa acknowledged that he had introduced himself to the Attorney-General before the trial and had obtained the Justice Minister’s contact information through his cousin, Supreme Court Judge Justice Yonny Kulendi.

Under cross-examination, Mr. Jakpa admitted that the messages presented in court did not include the entire conversation but were selected based on their relevance to his case.

The DPP’s attempt to submit the WhatsApp conversation as evidence faced objections from Mr. Sory, counsel for Mr. Jakpa, who argued that the defence required additional time to thoroughly review the messages.

Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, presiding over the case, then sought input from Dr. Bamba, counsel for the first accused, regarding objections to the submission.

Dr. Bamba objected to the document’s submission, citing the lack of color printing in the document, which also surprised the judge since the printout provided by Mr. Jakpa similarly lacked color.

Following these objections, the court instructed the DPP to defer the submission of the messages until the defence had sufficient time to examine them. This review was scheduled for today’s session.

The trial, which revolves around the procurement of ambulances, has attracted significant public attention due to the high-profile nature of the accused and the substantial implications for the country’s healthcare system.

The outcome of today’s session is eagerly anticipated as it will determine whether the WhatsApp messages will be admitted as evidence, potentially impacting the direction of the trial.

The court’s decision will be pivotal in establishing the relevance and admissibility of digital communications in legal proceedings.

  • Name which Ahwoi brother has a stake in Ridge Royal Hotel – Wassa East MP dares NPP MP

Name which Ahwoi brother has a stake in Ridge Royal Hotel – Wassa East MP dares NPP MP

The Member of Parliament for Wassa East, Isaac Adjei Mensah, from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a challenge to his colleague MP from Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, to specify which of the Ahwoi brothers has a stake in the Ridge Royal Hotel located in the Central Region.

This challenge arises amidst ongoing discussions about the sale of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) shares in various state-owned hotels to Bryan Acheampong‘s Rocky City Hotel. The conversation frequently touches upon how NDC affiliates acquired state assets during their time in power.

During the June 19, 2024, edition of Metro TV’s “Good Morning Ghana” show, Collins Adomako-Mensah asserted that the Ahwois had acquired the Ridge Royal Hotel while the NDC was in office. Isaac Adjei Mensah countered this by demanding clarification on which Ahwoi brother was involved, noting that there are three Ahwoi brothers prominent in Ghanaian politics: Kwesi Ahwoi, Kwamena Ahwoi, and Ato Ahwoi.

The exchange between the MPs was as follows:

Adomako-Mensah: “The Ahwois are a minority shareholder in Ridge Royal Hotel. They bought it when the NDC was in power.”

Isaac Adjei Mensah: “Which of the Ahwois are you talking about? You can’t say Ahwois, we have Kwesi Ahwoi, Kwamena Ahwoi, and Ato.”

Adomako-Mensah: “It is about the principle, I am saying that when you (NDC) were in power, the Ahwois were able to purchase a state asset which is the Ridge Royal and at that time you were not bold enough to say what you are saying now. That is the point I am making.”

Isaac Adjei Mensah: “So now, which of the Ahwois I have asked, you cannot be blank. The other question is which state was these guys in, Ato, was he a minister, at what point did he come in?”

In other parts of the conversation, the show’s host, Randy Abbey, and Collins Adomako-Mensah clarified that the Ahwoi in question was Ato Ahwoi, who served as the board chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation from 2009 to 2013.

The debate reflects broader concerns about the transparency and fairness of the acquisition of state assets by political figures. Isaac Adjei Mensah’s challenge underscores the necessity for specific details and accountability when such allegations are made.

The mention of Ato Ahwoi’s involvement has brought a new dimension to the discussion, emphasizing the need for clarity on the matter.

  • Scotland keep their Euro 2024 campaign alive

Scotland keep their Euro 2024 campaign alive

In a gritty and determined performance, Scotland secured a valuable point against Switzerland, keeping their Euro 2024 campaign alive.

The 1-1 draw at the raucous Cologne Stadium saw Scotland overcome injuries and self-inflicted errors to stay in the hunt for qualification from Group A.

Scotland’s qualification hero, Scott McTominay, gave the Tartan Army an early lead with a deflected shot that almost lifted the roof off the stadium in the 13th minute.

However, a moment of defensive calamity allowed Switzerland to equalize. A misjudged back pass from Anthony Ralston was pounced upon by Xherdan Shaqiri, who dispatched a sublime first-time shot high beyond Angus Gunn.

The match took a further toll on Scotland’s squad when Kieran Tierney, clutching his hamstring, had to be substituted after Dan Ndoye squandered a golden chance when through on goal. Tierney’s injury means he will miss the crucial game against Hungary on Sunday, adding to Scotland’s defensive woes.

Despite these setbacks, the Scots rallied heroically in the closing stages. Grant Hanley came agonizingly close to securing all three points when his header from an Andy Robertson free-kick struck the post.

The Swiss had several late opportunities to snatch a win, but Scotland’s resolute defense held firm.

The draw moves Scotland to third in Group A, setting up a potentially historic encounter with Hungary. A victory on Sunday would likely see Scotland progress beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.

The atmosphere in Cologne was electric, with tens of thousands of Scotland supporters filling the city and the stadium, creating a sea of tartan and fervent support.

This passionate backing was in stark contrast to Scotland’s previous outing, a 5-1 defeat to hosts Germany, where the team looked a shadow of the side that had previously stunned Norway and beaten Spain in qualifying.

Against Switzerland, Scotland showed the guile and determination that had deserted them in Munich. The opener was classic Scotland, reminiscent of their qualification run. A McTominay header cleared a Swiss corner, leading to an Andy Robertson charge down the field. Callum McGregor’s pass found McTominay, whose first-time shot deflected off Fabian Schar and rocketed into the net.

Despite some nervy moments in defense during the first half, Scotland managed to contain the Swiss. The second half saw a transformed Scotland side attacking with fervor and without fear, a performance that earned them a deserved point.

For manager Steve Clarke and the throngs of Scotland fans who traveled from the city center, the team’s resilience and fighting spirit were all they could have asked for. With their Euro 2024 hopes still very much alive, all eyes now turn to the decisive match against Hungary.

This result not only keeps Scotland in contention but also serves as a testament to their ability to overcome adversity and compete at the highest level.

  • I went to the harbour in 1978 as an iced water seller – Interview of late Labianca CEO pops up

I went to the harbour in 1978 as an iced water seller – Interview of late Labianca CEO pops up

On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, edition of his programme on Neat FM, renowned broadcaster Adakabre Frimpong Manso aired the first three-and-a-half minutes of an audio recording featuring the late CEO of Labianca Company Limited, Eunice Jacqueline Buah Asomah-Hinneh.

In this candid recording, the late businesswoman detailed her remarkable journey from a modest start as a pure water seller to becoming a multimillionaire frozen foods importer.

Eunice Asomah-Hinneh began her story by recalling her early days at Tema Harbour in 1978, where she sold iced water to earn a living.

“I went to the harbour in 1978 as an iced water seller. In our time, there was nothing like ‘Slay Queen,’ so you had to work hard. I am the type that likes living; I was born with it, so I tried to work in order to cater to my lifestyle,” she narrated.

Describing her formative years, she mentioned her small stature earned her the nickname “Small Girl” from traders traveling from various parts of Ghana, including Kumasi, Dunkwa, and Nkawkaw.

At that time, only the State Fisheries Company and Mankoadze Fisheries Limited were importing frozen foods into the country. This environment provided Eunice with valuable insights into the industry.

Eunice shared how her dedication and hard work paid off, eventually allowing her to travel abroad, where she built essential business contacts.

“I didn’t stay long; I returned to continue working at the harbour. I didn’t come to hurt anyone. I traveled with the objective of searching for suppliers, so when I returned, I knew what I was coming to do — I met fish suppliers and chicken suppliers,” she explained.

However, her path to success was not without obstacles. She faced media attacks and other challenges that tested her resolve.

“I started experiencing troubles a little after I began working. The trials I went through were that I would get up one day, and I had been handed over to a newspaper to be dealt with. I went through tribulation for 13 years,” she revealed.

Despite these adversities, Eunice’s determination never wavered. She questioned whether she should continue, but the booming success of her business, driven by the quality of her products, kept her going. Her story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring entrepreneurs.

Adakabre Frimpong Manso recounted the circumstances surrounding the recording. In August 2023, Eunice contacted him, requesting a discreet meeting at her residence.

Complying with her request to arrive without his car, Adakabre met Eunice in her bedroom, where she shared her story for over an hour. Before ending the session, Eunice instructed Adakabre not to broadcast the recording until after her passing.

Following Eunice Asomah-Hinneh’s death on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, Adakabre expressed his uncertainty about what to do with the audio.

The late CEO, who led Labianca Company Limited to become a major frozen food importer in West Africa, was also a Western Regional representative on the Council of State. Reports indicate she succumbed to a brief illness shortly after returning to Ghana from overseas medical treatment.

Adakabre’s decision to release the audio posthumously honors Eunice Jacqueline Buah Asomah-Hinneh’s legacy, celebrating her remarkable achievements and inspiring future generations with her story of resilience and success.

Sports Minister didn’t respond when we asked to engage him – National Amputee Football Team Coach

Richard Obeng, the head coach of Ghana’s national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, has disclosed that the team’s attempts to engage with the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, were initially met with silence.

This revelation comes amid a backdrop of dissatisfaction expressed by the Minister over the team’s actions following their recent triumph.

The Black Challenge recently captured headlines by securing a remarkable 2-1 victory over Morocco in the final of the 2024 Amputee Africa Cup of Nations (AAFCON) held in Egypt, overcoming a goal deficit to claim the championship.

In the wake of their historic win, the team embarked on a series of courtesy calls, including a notable visit to former President John Dramani Mahama, who generously donated $10,000 to support the team.

However, these visits stirred controversy when the team finally presented themselves at the Sports Ministry.

Minister Mustapha Ussif voiced his dissatisfaction with the team for choosing to visit other individuals before formally engaging with the Ministry. He emphasized that such actions “cannot be tolerated” and expressed disappointment in the team’s decision to prioritize other personalities before attending to their official duties at the Ministry.

Ussif highlighted the importance of recognizing their role as state representatives when engaging in such activities.

Coach Obeng recounted in an interview with Akoma FM in Kumasi that their visit to the Ministry was marred by the Minister’s displeasure at their prior engagements.

He clarified that it was never their intention to seek support elsewhere before visiting the Ministry. According to Obeng, their initial attempts to schedule a meeting with the Minister were ignored.

“We were only called after we visited Ex-President Mahama. Prior to that, we had made a request to present the trophy before on the 3rd requested date that might be appropriate for the Minister. But we didn’t get any response. We only got his attention after we visited the Ex-President,” Obeng explained.

Come for your passports, gov’t spends money on subsidy – Osafo-Maafo tells applicants

Senior Presidential Advisor Yaw Osafo-Maafo has raised concerns over the large number of uncollected passports at various passport offices across Ghana.

As of now, approximately 86,000 passports remain unclaimed, causing significant inefficiencies and financial burdens on the government.

During a press briefing on June 19, 2024, Mr. Osafo-Maafo highlighted the specific numbers, stating that in Takoradi alone, 8,000 printed passports have yet to be picked up by applicants. Cape Coast faces a similar situation, with 8,696 uncollected passports. In Accra, the number is even higher, with 19,500 passports waiting to be claimed.

“Because we subsidize the production of these passports, we are printing them for people at $4 when we should be printing them at $100. This subsidy locks up the capital of the government, making the subsidy a significant problem,” Mr. Osafo-Maafo explained.

In a bid to improve the efficiency and delivery of passports, the Office of the Senior Presidential Advisor, in collaboration with the Public Sector Reform Secretariat and the World Bank, presented modern IT equipment worth $1.3 million to the passport office in Accra in 2023. This initiative is part of a broader project that targets thirteen public sector institutions, including the Passport Office, to enhance service delivery.

At the equipment presentation ceremony, Mr. Osafo-Maafo emphasized the importance of this intervention in boosting the efficiency of passport issuance. He expressed optimism that the new IT infrastructure would significantly improve the processing and management of passport applications.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo urged passport applicants to collect their documents promptly to ensure the sustainability of the subsidized passport production program.

About 86,000 passports are yet to be collected – Osafo-Maafo

Senior Presidential Advisor, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, has lamented the high number of uncollected passports at the various passport offices across the country.

According to him, a total of about 86,000 passports are yet to be collected by the respective applicants.

He noted that 8,000 passports are yet to be claimed in Takoradi after being printed. A total of 8,696 passports are yet to be claimed by applicants in Cape Coast. In Accra, 19,500 passports have not been claimed despite being printed.

“Because we subsidise the production of these passports, we are printing them for people at $4 when we should be printing them at $100 dollars. So the subsidy of these passports is locking up the capital of government. So the government’s subsidy in these passports is a big problem,” he told the press on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

To enhance the delivery of passports, the Office of the Senior Presidential Advisor, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, in 2023, presented modern IT equipment worth US$1.3 million to the passport office in Accra.

The office noted that the move forms part of ongoing project implementation under the Office of the Senior Presidential Advisor and the Public Sector Reform Secretariat in collaboration with the World Bank.

The project covers thirteen (13) selected thirteen (13) public sector institutions, including the Passport Office as one of the service delivery agencies.

Speaking at a short ceremony to present the items, Yaw Osafo-Maafo noted that the intervention will enhance efficiency in the issuance of passports.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo urged passport applicants to collect their documents promptly to ensure the sustainability of the subsidized passport production program.

  • Release the evidence that says Rock City isn’t making profit – Bryan Acheampong dares Ablakwa

Release the evidence that says Rock City isn’t making profit – Bryan Acheampong dares Ablakwa

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has refuted claims that his hotel, Rock City, is experiencing losses, describing such assertions as unfounded.

The controversy stems from the proposed sale of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) stake in several hotels to Rock City, owned by the Minister.

Mr. Acheampong dismissed the claims made by North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, stating, “Rock City is not making losses. There is no one anywhere who can say that Rock City is making losses.”

He criticized Mr. Ablakwa and Sammy Gyamfi for exaggerating the situation, alleging that Mr. Ablakwa’s assertions were baseless.

Mr. Ablakwa had earlier indicated that documents he had intercepted showed that Rock City was unprofitable, challenging the notion that Mr. Acheampong possessed expertise in hotel management.

He accused Mr. Acheampong of state capture, arguing that Rock City had incurred losses and failed to pay taxes in 2023.

In response, Mr. Acheampong questioned Mr. Ablakwa’s claims, stating that Rock City had not filed its 2023 taxes yet, contrary to Mr. Ablakwa’s assertions.

He labeled Mr. Ablakwa’s statements as lies and fabrications, daring him to provide evidence to support his claims.

The controversy surrounding the proposed sale of SSNIT’s stake in several hotels to Rock City has sparked public outrage, leading to a demonstration dubbed “Hands Off Our Hotels.”

The protest, organized by Mr. Ablakwa, aimed to pressure the government to halt the sale, which protesters argue constitutes an abuse of power.

The demonstration, which saw hundreds of participants gathering at the Labadi Beach Hotel, received support from civil society organizations, concerned citizens, and opposition political groups.

The protesters called for transparency and accountability in the sale of state-owned properties and urged the government to reconsider its decision.

  • Is Ghana cursed? – Prof. Agyekum laments sale of state assets

Is Ghana cursed? – Prof. Agyekum laments sale of state assets

Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, Professor Kofi Agyekum, has expressed his displeasure over the poor running of state institutions and its subsequent sale.

Speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ programme, Professor Kofi Agyekum wondered if a spell has been cast on the country due to the continuous sale of state assets.

“From Nkrumah’s time, there are so many state assets we have failed to take care of. I wonder if we have been cursed that anything that is for government must not flourish. Why don’t they prosper?”

“If you check management, those brought from abroad are not more intelligent than those Ghanaian indigens. Our universities teach business management,” he said.

His comment comes at a time when the Office of the President has assured that President Akufo-Addo will review and respond to the petition submitted by the “Hands Off Our Hotels” protesters, who are opposing the sale of 60 percent shares in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, a company owned by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

The protest, led by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, culminated in the submission of the petition at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, June 18. Deputy Chief of Staff Emmanuel Adumuah Bossman, who received the petition on behalf of the President, expressed the administration’s commitment to considering the protesters’ concerns.

“We are delighted to receive the petition because it is part of the exercise of our democratic rights guaranteed under Chapter 5 of our constitution. We are also grateful that this procession and demonstration have taken place without any negative outcomes,” Bossman stated.

“I will submit the petition to the President, and I can assure you that it will be looked into, and appropriate measures will be taken as and when deemed fit.”

During the protest, Mr Ablakwa called on President Akufo-Addo to halt the sale of the SSNIT hotels, arguing that the transaction was not in the country’s best interest.

He urged the President to ensure that profitable state assets are not sold and that workers’ properties are not disposed of without their consent.

Mr Ablakwa also demanded that ministers and politically exposed persons be prevented from purchasing state assets, highlighting the need to stop the Blay family’s alleged illegal encroachment on Labadi Hotel’s beachfront.

Mr Ablakwa passionately addressed the crowd, emphasizing the protesters’ determination to protect state assets from being sold to politicians.

ECG has not been engaged in load shedding – Energy Minister on recent dumsor

The Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempreh, has clarified that the recent power outages experienced in parts of the country were not a result of load shedding by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

For months, many parts of the country have faced intermittent power outages, causing inconvenience to businesses and households.

Responding to questions in Parliament, Dr. Opoku Prempeh explained that the outages were due to various factors, including localised issues with overloaded online transformers.

He highlighted the transformation of certain areas, like parts of East Legon, from purely residential to commercial districts, leading to increased power consumption and strain on existing infrastructure.

Additionally, he mentioned emergency situations such as the shutdown of the CenPower plant, resulting in a loss of 40 megawatts, and ongoing maintenance at the Amandi power plant.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized that these factors, along with emergency outages requested by GRIDCo, contributed to the power outages.

He stated that ECG could not have implemented a pre-programmed load shedding schedule due to the unplanned nature of the incidents.

The Minister’s clarification comes amidst public concern and speculation about the causes of the recent power outages. He assured that the government and relevant agencies are working to address the issues and improve the reliability of the country’s power supply.

NIB survey reveals Opoku Prempeh as Bawumia’s preferred running mate

The Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has emerged as the favored candidate among New Patriotic Party (NPP) members to be the running mate of the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, according to a recent survey by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB).

The survey engaged 5,116 NPP delegates from across the nation, encompassing national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives. The results revealed that Dr. Opoku Prempeh secured a commanding 76.2% of the responses, positioning him as the top choice among party members.

Trailing behind him was the Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who received 10.16% of the delegates’ support. Other notable figures considered for the role include Apostle Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Pentecost Church-Ghana, and Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture and MP for the Abetifi Constituency.

With the 2024 general elections just six months away, Dr. Bawumia faces the critical decision of selecting a running mate from among the party’s prominent figures. The survey also highlighted a strong consensus among respondents that the running mate should be chosen from the Ashanti Region, with approximately 84% of participants advocating for this preference.

The NIB report underscores the appeal of Dr. Opoku Prempeh, noting his charisma and widespread popularity among party members as key factors in his favor. However, it also cautions Dr. Bawumia to consider potential challenges associated with Dr. Prempeh’s current role as Energy Minister.

“Given Dr. Prempeh’s current role as the Minister of Energy, the ongoing power crises in Ghana could impact his candidacy. Therefore, the government may need to implement necessary measures to solidify his competence in managing the energy sector, thereby enhancing the party’s prospects in the 2024 general elections,” the report advised.

As the NPP gears up for the upcoming elections, the selection of a running mate remains a pivotal decision, one that could significantly influence the party’s performance and appeal to voters.

  • Motorcycle-related accidents in Bono Region surge by 130% in 2024 Q1 – NRSA

Motorcycle-related accidents in Bono Region surge by 130% in 2024 Q1 – NRSA

The Bono Regional National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has sounded the alarm over a dramatic increase in motorcycle accidents within the first quarter of 2024.

According to the Regional Manager of the Authority, Abigail Atinpoka Adongo, there has been a staggering 130% rise in such incidents compared to the same period last year.

The data shows a troubling trend: while 48 motorcycle or tricycle accidents were recorded throughout 2023, with 10 occurring in the first quarter, the first quarter of 2024 alone has already seen 23 accidents.

More worryingly, 17 of these incidents involved victims who were not wearing helmets.

Adongo pointed out that this surge is primarily due to a lack of adherence to road traffic regulations and a failure to prioritize safety.

In response, the National Road Safety Authority has stepped up its public education campaigns, emphasizing the critical importance of wearing crash helmets.

Recognizing the additional risks posed by the election year, the Authority is committed to increasing its efforts to prevent further accidents and save lives.

To tackle this issue, the Authority is collaborating with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to enforce helmet laws and promote a culture of safety in the region.

Motorcyclists and passengers are being urged to take personal responsibility for their safety by consistently wearing helmets.

“We are worried as an authority because over the years there has been an increase in the number of motorcyclists involved in accidents or crashes. Last year we recorded 48 that had to do with motorcycles or tricycles,” said Adongo.

She further highlighted the significant rise in accidents this year.

“If you take this year’s first quarter compared to last year’s first quarter, we realize that there has been an increase in the figures. So last year’s first quarter, we recorded 10 crashes involving motorcycles. But this year as we stand, in the first quarter we recorded 23 which means that there has been an increase and the increase is about 130 percent which is alarming.”

Emphasizing the critical role of helmet use, she added, “As I compared the 2023 first quarter and 2024 first quarter where there is an alarming increase in the first quarter of 2024, we realized that out of the 23 that had the accident, 17 of them were without helmets and six were with helmets. This year being an election year, it calls for more from the Authority.”

The National Road Safety Authority’s intensified efforts aim to reverse this worrying trend and ensure a safer environment for all road users in the Bono Region.

Ensure you and your passengers put on helmets – NRSA to motorcyclists in Bono Region

The Bono Regional National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has raised alarms over the increasing number of motorcyclists and their passengers neglecting to wear helmets, thereby endangering their lives.

Abigail Atinpoka Adongo, the Regional Manager of the Authority, highlighted a disturbing 130% rise in motorcycle-related accidents in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.

Data from the Authority reveals that last year, 48 incidents involving motorcycles or tricycles were documented, with 10 of these crashes occurring in the first quarter. However, this year, 23 crashes have already been reported in the first quarter, with a concerning 17 of the victims not wearing helmets.

The Authority attributes this worrying trend to a lack of adherence to road traffic regulations and a disregard for safety measures.

In response, the National Road Safety Authority has ramped up its public education efforts, urging motorcyclists and their passengers to consistently wear crash helmets. Recognizing the heightened risks associated with the ongoing election year, the Authority is committed to enhancing its vigilance to prevent accidents and save lives.

To address this issue, the Authority is collaborating with various stakeholders, including the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), to enforce helmet laws and foster a culture of safety in the region.

Motorcyclists and their passengers are being urged to take personal responsibility for their safety by wearing helmets to avoid tragic outcomes.

Abigail Atinpoka Adongo expressed deep concern over the rising trend of accidents involving motorcyclists.

“We are worried as an authority because over the years there has been an increase in the number of motorcyclists involved in accidents or crashes. Last year we recorded 48 that had to do with motorcycles or tricycles,” she noted.

Comparing the first quarters of 2023 and 2024, she pointed out the alarming increase in accidents.

“If you take this year’s first quarter compared to last year’s first quarter, we realize that there has been an increase in the figures. So last year’s first quarter, we recorded 10 crashes involving motorcycles. • Raise more revenue but don’t introduce more taxes – ISSER Director to gov’t

Raise more revenue but don’t introduce more taxes – ISSER Director to gov’t

Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social, and Economic Research (ISSER), Professor Peter Quartey, has emphasized the need for the government to devise innovative ways of boosting domestic revenue without increasing taxes on Ghanaians.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, the economist underscored the importance of enhancing the efficiency of the tax system through digitalization to improve revenue collection and reduce human intervention.

Prof. Quartey acknowledged that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and other institutions have already taken steps toward digitizing the tax system, but he stressed that these efforts should be intensified, particularly to include the informal sector.

“We need to raise more revenue domestically, not by imposing higher taxes but by making the existing tax systems more efficient, and we’ve started that with digitization which GRA and the others are doing, and I think we need to deepen that,” he stated.

He further highlighted the issue of human discretion in revenue collection, which he believes hampers the effectiveness of the tax system.

“We need to remove the human interface. There is so much discretion when it comes to raising revenue in the country,” Prof. Quartey added.

His comments come in the wake of a keynote speech by Lord Paul Boateng, a Member of the House of Lords in the United Kingdom, at a leadership lecture at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

Lord Boateng argued that Ghana must move away from reliance on foreign aid to achieve substantial growth, as dependence on external assistance impedes progress.

Prof. Quartey concurred with Lord Boateng, stating that enhanced domestic revenue generation could reduce the country’s dependence on external funding. He also pointed out that a crucial step towards financial independence is for the government to curb its expenditure.

Despite low revenue generation, Prof. Quartey criticized the government’s pattern of increasing expenditures in its annual budget statements. He referred to budget statements from 2022 and 2023, questioning the logic behind significant expenditure hikes in times of revenue challenges.

“We also need to look at our expenditure. I don’t think we are getting value for money for the expenditures, especially for the procurement of goods and services,” he said.

He expressed surprise at the government’s decision to increase expenditures by substantial percentages during difficult times.

“It surprises me that in times of difficulty like this, if you look at the budget statement from 2023, 2022, and even before that we increased expenditure, sometimes, 42%, 30% and you ask yourself, if you are struggling to raise revenue yet your expenditure is still going up, how do you address all the beautiful things you raised in the Ghana Beyond Aid document? We need to go back to the drawing board,” Prof. Quartey remarked.

In conclusion, Prof. Quartey called for a reassessment of the country’s financial strategies, urging the government to enhance the efficiency of its tax system and manage its expenditures more prudently to realize the vision of a ‘Ghana Beyond Aid.’

  • Your petition against sale of SSNIT hotels will be acted on by Akufo-Addo – Presidency

Your petition against sale of SSNIT hotels will be acted on by Akufo-Addo – Presidency

The Office of the President has assured that President Akufo-Addo will review and respond to the petition submitted by the “Hands Off Our Hotels” protesters, who are opposing the sale of 60 percent shares in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, a company owned by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

“It has become the whole of Ghana versus the few lootocrats who are determined to continue with their state capture, and I am clear in my mind that they will have no choice but to listen,” he declared.

“Even if you don’t listen and you try to sell this hotel, how are they going to have access to the hotel? How? Because we will block that access. These are our assets, and we are saying you haven’t consulted us. Rest assured, we are confident these hotels will not be sold.”

The protest saw tensions escalate when police used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, resulting in several injuries.

Mr Ablakwa confirmed to the media that some injured protesters had been transported to health facilities for treatment. He noted that some individuals collapsed after being pepper-sprayed without provocation and assured that he would visit the victims at the hospitals they had been admitted to.

As the nation awaits President Akufo-Addo’s response, the “Hands Off Our Hotels” movement remains steadfast in its commitment to preventing the sale of SSNIT assets, asserting that the public must be consulted before any such transactions occur.

We can’t fight crime because our security isn’t fully equipped – Wa Central MP

Member of Parliament for Wa Central, Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, has raised concerns about the lack of adequate equipment for security personnel, both in public and private sectors, to effectively combat crime in Ghana.

Pelpuo, who is also the Northern Caucus Leader in Parliament, highlighted that many security officers, particularly those who rely solely on physical strength, are vulnerable in their line of duty.

His comments come in the wake of two recorded incidents of violence in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region, prompting an investigation by the Ghana Police Service.

In a statement, the Police assured the public of ongoing efforts to arrest those involved and bring them to justice.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show, Pelpuo expressed worry over the lack of technical equipment and resources for law enforcement in Ghana compared to their counterparts in Western countries.

He emphasized the need for specially trained personnel to be dispatched to Wa to handle the investigation and apprehension of the criminals involved, citing the sophistication of the crimes.

Pelpuo stressed the importance of adequately equipping security personnel to enhance their effectiveness in combating crime and ensuring public safety.

He called for urgent measures to address the resource deficiencies within the Ghana Police Service to better equip them for the challenging task of investigating and apprehending criminals.

  • Akufo-Addo and Gabby added $800m to Ameri deal but were caught – Martin Kpebu

Akufo-Addo and Gabby added $800m to Ameri deal but were caught – Martin Kpebu

Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has accused President Akufo-Addo and a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, of siphoning $800 million in the controversial Ameri deal.

He made the assertions while speaking to the media during the “Hands off our hotels” demonstration on Tuesday.

“Ask Akufo-Addo, the 800 million he added to the Ameri deal, where was he taking that 800 million dollars to? He had to use Boakye Agyarko as a scapegoat and sack him and say he was misled. Akufo-Addo was running away with 800 million dollars. That one too was it an allegation. What was his response, didn’t he say he was misled? Meanwhile, Boakye Agyarko said he wasn’t involved in the transaction beyond a certain point. He says the transaction was between Akufo-Addo and Gabby and they added 800 million dollars, ” he said.

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and former Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko, during an interview on Kumasi-based Asanteman FM, claimed that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the NPP, renegotiated the Ameri deal without obtaining consent from the government committee assigned to work on the deal.

Upon confronting Gabby about the matter, Agyarko asserted that he was told to keep quiet because President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was already informed about the actions taken by Gabby.

Agyarko recounted that he received a call from Gabby while he was on a flight to the United States, during which Gabby expressed frustration at not being able to reach him.

In a recent post on Facebook, some hours after Mr Agyarko’s comments, Mr Otchere-Darko made a statement accusing an individual of being a liar.

“What aaaa can one say to an energised liar, struggling with constipation?” he wrote.

    Background

The Ameri Power Plant project was initiated in response to Ghana’s power generation challenges and the need to increase the country’s electricity supply to meet the growing demand for energy.

The project was awarded to Ameri Group, a Dubai-based energy company. Ameri was tasked with supplying and operating the power plant.

The Ameri deal was signed in 2015 under an emergency power agreement to quickly address the power crisis in Ghana. The agreement was signed during the tenure of former President John Dramani Mahama.

After the initial agreement was signed, the Ameri deal became a subject of controversy in Ghana due to concerns over its cost and terms. There were allegations of overpricing and lack of transparency in the agreement.

Following the change of government in 2017, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, initiated a renegotiation of the Ameri deal. The government sought to amend the terms of the agreement to reduce costs and make it more favorable to Ghana.

The renegotiation process led to the signing of a novation agreement with a new company called Mytilineos International Trading Company in 2018. Under this agreement, Mytilineos took over the management and operation of the Ameri Power Plant from Ameri Group.

The novation agreement was brought before the Ghanaian Parliament for approval, and after heated debates, it was eventually ratified by Parliament in March 2018.

Meanwhile, Mr Kpebu asserts that Ghana’s corruption perception index will hit its lowest point under President Akufo-Addo’s administration for the year 2024.

“Ghanaians are very angry. I had to leave court and come here. But some people don’t have that luxury but every day when you interact with people, you will find out that people are very angry.

“They are dissatisfied with the corruption-ridden Akufo-Addo governance,” he said.

I like Bawumia but I never prophesied that he would win the elections – Rev. Owusu Bempah

Founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah, has refuted claims circulating in the public sphere that he prophesied Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s loss in the December 7, 2024, presidential elections.

Addressing a viral video purportedly showing him prophesying about Dr. Bawumia’s electoral defeat in an interview on Okay FM on Thursday, June 13, 2024, Rev. Owusu Bempah asserted that the video was doctored and fake.

The renowned preacher clarified that while he may have insights into the election outcome, he has never publicly declared any prophecy regarding the election’s winner or loser.

He specifically named a blogger named Rashark as the individual responsible for spreading the misleading video. Rev. Owusu Bempah emphasized that he has never made political predictions and denounced the manipulation of his words in the video.

“It is a gentleman called Rashark, a blogger, who has caused this problem. I don’t know why he did that, but the video was cut and paste. It was a doctored video; I didn’t say the things in the video.

“Because everyone would bear me witness that I have never stood somewhere and prophesied about the political party that is going to win the election and the one who would lose,” he said in Twi.

Furthermore, he emphasized his close relationship with Vice President Bawumia, stating that they share mutual respect and regularly meet for the betterment of Ghana.

Rev. Owusu Bempah expressed his unwavering support for Dr. Bawumia’s aspirations to succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, affirming his commitment to praying for the vice president’s success.

“The vice president is someone I like very much and he also likes me very much. It is true that I have meetings with him and we meet for good reasons. I meet with him for the good of Ghana. I’m supporting him with prayers and the truth is that I will continue praying for him all the time.”

Alcoholic drinks can’t be advertised by celebrities – Supreme Court rules

In a majority decision, the Supreme Court has upheld the Food and Drugs Authority’s (FDA) directive that prevents celebrities from endorsing alcoholic drinks.

This ruling concludes a nineteen-month legal battle initiated by Mark Darlington Osae, CEO of Black Kulcha Music, against the FDA.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo delivered an abridged version of the ruling on Wednesday, June 19, stating that the FDA’s directive does not violate the constitution.

As a result, well-known personalities or professionals are permanently prohibited from appearing in advertisements that promote alcoholic beverages.

The FDA’s directive, which was implemented in 2015 to regulate alcohol consumption in Ghana, includes guidelines that restrict celebrities from advertising alcoholic beverages. The FDA justified this restriction by citing the influential nature of celebrities, which could potentially influence minors to engage in alcoholism.

Representing the plaintiff, Mark Darlington Osae, was Bobby Banson from the Robert Smith Law Group, while the FDA was represented by Justine Amenuvor. Osae filed a writ at the Supreme Court on November 11, 2022, challenging the FDA’s regulations as discriminatory against the creative arts industry.

According to Osae, the FDA’s directive is inconsistent with and in contravention of articles 17(1) and 17(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantee equality before the law and prohibit discrimination based on social or economic status, occupation, among others.

Many figures from the creative industry, including Wendy Shay, Shatta Wale, Brother Sammy, Kuami Eugene, and Camidoh, have spoken out against the FDA’s directive. They argue that endorsements or advertisements for alcoholic beverages are crucial income streams for them and that any law restricting such activities deprives them of their livelihood.

  • A king needs the voice of a prophet who is the mouthpiece of God – Ga Mantse

The esteemed ruler of the Ga State, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has called for the integration of trusted prophets within leadership frameworks.

Speaking on the occasion of this year’s Fathers’ Day during a visit to renowned Ghanaian prophet and philanthropist Bernard ElBernard Nelson-Eshun, King Tsuru emphasized the crucial role prophets play in governance and leadership.

Highlighting the historical significance of prophets, the Ga Mantse stated, “There can never be a king without a prophet. If you look through the quarters of the Bible and throughout history, it will tell you that the prophet made nations and broke nations. They’re the mouthpiece of the Supreme Authority of God. A king needs the voice of the prophet. A king must listen to a prophet because a prophet is the mouthpiece of God.”

Despite the controversies and instances of charlatanism associated with the prophetic ministry over the years, King Tsuru underscored that true prophets are invaluable assets to leaders for the supernatural insights they provide.

The visit to Prophet Nelson-Eshun was not only a gesture of gratitude but also a celebration of the pivotal role the prophet played in King Tsuru’s journey to becoming the leader of the Ga people.

The King recounted how Prophet Nelson-Eshun was the first to prophesy about his future as the Ga Mantse, a revelation that provided him with clarity and direction at a young age.

Your actions are unfair, invite us – Medical Laboratory Professional Workers to Health Ministry

The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) has expressed disappointment with the Ministry of Health’s handling of its ongoing nationwide strike, which commenced on June 17, 2024.

The strike was initiated due to the union’s dissatisfaction with the lack of favorable conditions of service for its members, despite nearly two years of negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

In a statement dated Monday, June 17, 2024, the Ministry of Health appealed to MELPWU to call off the strike and return to the negotiation table, citing significant progress made in the negotiations and the agreement on most of the proposed items by the Government Negotiations Team.

However, Dr. Franklyn Armah, First Vice Chairman of MELPWU, expressed disappointment with the Ministry’s statement, stating that it was a public statement and not directly addressed to the union.

He noted that the union had formally notified the Ministry of its intention to strike and had not received any invitation for further negotiations.

Dr. Armah criticized the Ministry for its lack of direct communication with the union, stating, “We feel that it is most unfair. We have not been called; we have not been invited to have important meetings to resolve this matter.”

As the strike continues, the impact on healthcare services in the country is expected to be felt, highlighting the importance of resolving the issue promptly through constructive dialogue and engagement between the Ministry of Health and MELPWU.

Ghana’s economic development is not advancing as desired – African Center for Economic Transformation

Founder of the African Center for Economic Transformation, Dr. Kingsley Y. Amoako, has expressed concerns over Ghana’s faltering progress in economic transformation.

Speaking at the Ghana Compact Citizens Convention at the University of Ghana, Dr. Amoako emphasized that the nation has lost its footing in advancing its economic agenda.

The Citizens’ Convention is a pivotal part of the Ghana Compact process, an initiative aimed at fostering inclusive dialogue among all stakeholders to develop a comprehensive vision for Ghana’s political and economic future.

The primary goal of the convention is to finalize a ‘Social Contract’—a strategic agreement between Ghana’s leaders and citizens that outlines the country’s collective aspirations and objectives through 2050.

This Social Contract is designed to delineate the responsibilities and commitments of both the citizenry and leadership, ensuring that the established goals are effectively pursued and achieved.

During his address, Dr. Amoako pointed out that despite some sectors experiencing growth, Ghana’s overall economic transformation has lost momentum.

He highlighted the economy’s ongoing vulnerability to crises and its failure to substantially uplift the livelihoods of its people.

In discussions with the media, Yaw Baah, the General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress, underscored the significance of the compact.

He noted that it will serve as a benchmark for electing future leaders, ensuring that they remain accountable to the nation’s objectives.

Additionally, Kodjo Mensah Abrampah, Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission, announced plans to restructure the National Development Planning Committee.

This restructuring aims to enhance the committee’s efficiency in fulfilling its core functions and integrating feedback from citizens.
