Ghana will see a turnaround if you give it good leaders this Dec. – Kufuor tells public

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has issued a compelling call to Ghana’s youth, urging them to engage actively in the upcoming December elections to catalyze the nation’s development and progress.

Speaking at the launch of the Kufuor Scholars Foundation’s voter campaign, aimed at boosting youth participation in the December polls, Kufuor emphasized the crucial role the youth play in shaping the country’s future.

He likened their potential impact to that of king-makers, whose choices can determine the nation’s leadership trajectory.

“Ghana alone has about 30 million citizens, and with your learning and mature brain power throughout our societies, if you would do what you should do as responsible citizens to try to give the nation good leadership, inclusive leadership, then within a few years you will see Ghana turning around to be emulated on the continent of Africa, bettering the lot of humanity,” Kufuor stated.

In the previous 2020 elections, over 17 million Ghanaians registered to vote, yet only 13 million participated. Voter apathy, economic hardship, and misgovernance have been cited as key factors contributing to the lower turnout.

The urgency of the situation has intensified for the upcoming December 7 election, as a survey by the Kufuor Scholars Foundation revealed that 43 percent of every 1,000 Ghanaians surveyed intend not to vote.

Addressing this critical issue, the Kufuor Scholars Programme, in partnership with the National Commission for Civic Education, has launched a voter campaign exercise focused on increasing education and awareness about the importance of voting.

“Having over 70% of the youth population means that you will be unstoppable if you become committed to doing what is right,” Kufuor asserted, highlighting the significant influence the youth can wield in driving positive change.

The launch event saw attendance from several notable figures, including Prof. Agyemang Baffuor Duah, CEO of the JAK Foundation; H.E. Harriet Thompson, British High Commissioner to Ghana; Dr. Pascal Brenya, KSP Coordinator; Nana Ama Oppong Duah, Policy Advisor at the JAK Foundation; and Irene Horsham (Esq), Rector of Mountcrest University.

I will hold ambulance trial in-camera if you keep leaking recorded court proceedings – Judge warns

Justice Efia Serwah Asare-Botwey, presiding over the trial involving Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has issued a stern warning that the proceedings will be held in-camera if the leaking of recorded court sessions continues.

This announcement came after an audio recording of last week’s cross-examination of the third accused, Richard Jakpa, surfaced on various WhatsApp platforms.

On Tuesday, June 19, the trial was put on hold when Deputy Attorney-General Alfred Tuah Yeboah raised concerns about the unauthorized recording.

The case was paused, and all parties, including the accused, were called into chambers for a private meeting with the judge.

Justice Asare-Botwey emerged from the meeting with a clear directive: “If it’s repeated, I’ll clear the court and hold the case in-camera. Only prosecution, lawyers, and the accused persons will be allowed in.”

This measure aims to maintain the integrity of the trial and prevent further leaks.

Mr. Tuah Yeboah, speaking to the media, noted that the prosecution was not concerned about the content of the audio recording, as it did not reveal anything damaging to their case.

He stated, “Not at all, because this audio is nothing that you have heard. In terms of the content, we are not minded about that because it is something that is in the public domain.”

The High Court admitted the audio recording into evidence on June 13. On the same day, Justice Asare-Botwey dismissed an application for mistrial filed by Dr. Ato Forson’s defense team, ruling that the tape did not show any instruction from Attorney-General Godfred Dame for Mr. Jakpa to implicate Dr. Forson.

Following the circulation of the recording, lawyers for Dr. Forson filed a supplementary affidavit supporting their motion for an order of mistrial, an injunction, and a stay of proceedings in the ongoing ambulance case.

Justice Asare-Botwey’s warning underscores the seriousness with which the court is treating these leaks. The National Security has been tasked with investigating the source of the unauthorized recording to prevent further breaches of court protocol.

The trial, which has garnered significant public and media attention, will continue under strict scrutiny to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of the judicial process.

I appreciate Efia Odo’s uniqueness – King Promise

Ghanaian musician King Promise has firmly rejected suggestions from some members of the public that he should distance himself from socialite Efia Odo.

The “Terminator” hitmaker emphasized the strength of their friendship, which predates his fame in the music industry.

King Promise expressed gratitude for Efia Odo’s unwavering support throughout his musical journey, noting that it would be unwise to end their relationship based on public opinion.

He highlighted that the disapproval of others towards her personality does not justify ending their friendship.

In an interview with YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon, King Promise addressed questions about his relationship with Efia Odo, with some people speculating that they were romantically involved.

When asked why people had issues with their relationship, he responded calmly, “I don’t know. I’ve asked some of my friends why they don’t like her, but they can’t give me a reason. Maybe it’s because they don’t appreciate her character, but for me, I appreciate her uniqueness.”

He continued, “I’ve known Efia for about eight years, long before I gained fame, and she has always been supportive of everything I do. So why should I abandon my friend just because you don’t like her? Does that make sense? It certainly doesn’t make sense.”

This statement comes after online users advised King Promise to distance himself from Efia Odo due to her public persona.

The pressure increased after King Promise lost the Artiste of the Year award to Stonebwoy at the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

Despite the public pressure, King Promise remains steadfast in his appreciation of Efia Odo’s uniqueness and the support she has provided him over the years.

  • I believed in Akufo-Addo in 1998 but not today – Joseph Nunoo-Mensah

    I believed in Akufo-Addo in 1998 but not today – Joseph Nunoo-Mensah

Former National Security Advisor Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah (RTD) has expressed his disillusionment with the current state of Ghana and President Akufo-Addo’s leadership.

Speaking on TV3’s “Hot Issues” with Kemmini Amanor, the former Chief of Defence Staff lamented the economic hardships and lack of development in the country, which he described as a “mess.”

“The Akufo-Addo I believed in, in 1998 isn’t the same person today,” Brigadier General Nunoo-Mensah stated. He conveyed deep disappointment in the trajectory of the nation under the leadership of both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the two dominant parties in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

Nunoo-Mensah criticized the current administration for failing to deliver on its promises and improve the country’s economic situation.

“The country is in a mess,” he said, highlighting the pervasive economic difficulties faced by Ghanaians. He expected Ghana to be in a much better place than it is today, expressing his dismay at the slow pace of development.

“I am a disappointed person. I thought Ghana would be a better place than we are today,” he admitted. According to Nunoo-Mensah, the primary role of elected officials should be to serve the interests of the people, not their own. “When you vote for parliamentarians and the president, we are voting for them to run Ghana for our benefit, not for their benefit.”

When asked about his perspective on contemporary politics, Nunoo-Mensah was candid in his response: “It is just to make money.” His remarks reflect a growing sentiment among many Ghanaians who feel that the political class has prioritized personal gain over national development.

Police probe death of 2 in Wa

The Ghana Police Service has initiated an investigation into the mysterious deaths of two individuals in the Wa Municipality.

The incidents, which occurred on Tuesday, have sent shockwaves through the community, prompting authorities to assure residents of their safety.

The first incident was reported at the Wa East Education Service office, while the second occurred at the Wa Model JHS School. Both events have raised serious concerns among the local populace.

In a statement, the Police Service urged the public, particularly the residents of Wa, to remain calm as they work diligently to apprehend those responsible.

“We would like to assure the public, especially the residents of Wa, to remain calm as the Police work to get those involved arrested to face justice,” the statement read.

Upper West Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu provided additional details after visiting one of the crime scenes. He revealed that one of the victims was rendered unconscious by a blow from a stone before the assailants slit his throat.

“So far, nothing shows that a human part was taken but of course, further investigation will uncover more information,” Yakubu stated.

The minister emphasized the importance of maintaining calm and trust in the security services as they thoroughly investigate the matter.

“The Regional Security Council will go back and strategize, but we want to assure the Wa people that the security services will be patrolling and doing what they need to do to make sure everyone is safe,” he added.

Residents of Wa have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement officials and provide any information that could assist in the investigation.

The police have intensified patrols and are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.

  • We thought Mahama wasn’t good enough but he’s way better than Akufo-Addo – Martin Kpebu

We thought Mahama wasn’t good enough but he’s way better than Akufo-Addo – Martin Kpebu

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has delivered a scathing critique of President Akufo-Addo‘s administration, asserting that former President John Dramani Mahama, once deemed inadequate, now appears significantly better in comparison.

Mr Kpebu’s comments come amidst growing concerns over rampant corruption and economic challenges under the current government.

Kpebu, addressing the media during the “Hands off our hotels” demonstration on Tuesday, lamented the current state of governance, highlighting that Ghanaians are increasingly frustrated with the President’s handling of corruption.

“Ghanaians are very angry. I had to leave court and come here. But some people don’t have that luxury but every day when you interact with people, you will find out that people are very angry. They are dissatisfied with the corruption-ridden Akufo-Addo governance,” he said.

Reflecting on the decision made in 2016 to elect Akufo-Addo over Mahama, Kpebu admitted that the expectations from the current administration have not been met.

“We thought John Mahama was not good enough; that is why in 2016 we voted out JM thinking that Akufo-Addo was better. But now we’ve discovered that JM was way better,” he noted.

Kpebu underscored his argument by citing the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), noting that Ghana’s score has stagnated at 43 under Akufo-Addo for four consecutive years. This score, he pointed out, was the lowest recorded during Mahama’s tenure.

“Per the Corruption Perception Index, we’ve been at 43 for four years. Now 43 was the lowest the John Mahama administration got. So for four years, President Akufo-Addo’s best fight against corruption has always been at 43. He has plateaued, he can’t be better,” Mr Kpebu explained.

He expressed grave concerns over the frequency of new corruption scandals under the current administration, warning that the situation is likely to deteriorate further in 2024.

“Every day, a new scandal. One day, one scandal. That is why we are very angry. We thought he was Junior Jesus and that Akufo-Addo would live above corruption, not knowing that he is the epitome of corruption,” he stressed.

  • National Security to probe source of leaked audio recording of A-G, Richard Jakpa

National Security to probe source of leaked audio recording of A-G, Richard Jakpa

The trial judge in the case involving Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Justice Efia Serwah Asare-Botwey, has directed the National Security to investigate the source of an audio recording of court proceedings that has been circulated widely.

The court proceedings were paused after Deputy Attorney-General Alfred Tuah Yeboah raised concerns about the unauthorized recording of last week’s cross-examination of the third accused, Richard Jakpa.

The recording was allegedly shared on various WhatsApp platforms, prompting the judge to summon all parties, including the accused, for a meeting in chambers.

Following the meeting, Justice Asare-Botwey warned, “If it’s repeated I’ll clear the court and hold the case in-camera. Only prosecution, lawyers and the accused persons will be allowed in.”

Last week, Mr. Tuah Yeboah stated that the prosecution was not particularly concerned about the contents of the audio recording, which featured an exchange between Attorney-General Godfred Dame and Richard Jakpa.

Speaking to journalists after court proceedings on Thursday, June 13, he said, “Not at all, because this audio is nothing that you have heard. In terms of the content, we are not minded about that because it is something that is in the public domain.”

Despite this, the High Court admitted the audio recording into evidence on the same day. This followed a previous ruling on June 6, where Justice Asare-Botwey dismissed an application for mistrial filed by Dr. Ato Forson’s lawyers, concluding that the tape did not reveal any instruction from Godfred Dame for Mr. Jakpa to implicate Dr. Forson.

Furthermore, the court also dismissed an application for mistrial filed by Ato Forson. The recording did not demonstrate any direct manipulation by the Attorney-General to influence the testimony of the third accused, thereby undermining the defense’s claims.

Lawyers for Dr. Forson, who is also the Minority Leader, have since filed a supplementary affidavit supporting a motion for an order of mistrial, injunction, and a stay of proceedings in the ongoing ambulance case.

As the investigation into the source of the leaked audio proceeds, the legal community and the public await further developments in this high-profile trial.

Ghanaians are tired of corruption under Akufo-Addo – Martin Kpebu

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has voiced strong criticism against the current administration, predicting that Ghana’s corruption perception index will reach its lowest point under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership in 2024.

He highlighted a surge in corruption incidents this year, claiming that each day brings forth a new scandal.

Mr Kpebu expressed his frustration with the government’s handling of corruption, noting the widespread anger among Ghanaians towards President Akufo-Addo.

“Ghanaians are very angry. I had to leave court and come here. But some people don’t have that luxury but every day when you interact with people, you will find out that people are very angry. They are dissatisfied with the corruption-ridden Akufo-Addo governance,” he stated.

These remarks were made during the “Hands off our hotels” demonstration on Tuesday, where Kpebu reflected on the public’s decision in 2016 to vote out then-President John Mahama in favor of President Akufo-Addo, hoping for better governance.

However, he argued that the current administration has failed to meet those expectations.

“We thought John Mahama was not good enough; that is why in 2016 we voted out JM thinking that Akufo-Addo was better. But now we’ve discovered that JM was way better,” Kpebu remarked.

Kpebu pointed to the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) as evidence of the administration’s shortcomings. He noted that under President Akufo-Addo, Ghana’s CPI score has stagnated at 43 for four consecutive years, matching the lowest point of the Mahama administration.

“Per the Corruption Perception Index, we’ve been at 43 for four years. Now 43 was the lowest the John Mahama administration got. So for four years, President Akufo-Addo’s best fight against corruption has always been at 43. He has plateaued, he can’t be better,” Kpebu explained.

The legal practitioner warned that the situation is likely to worsen in 2024 due to the constant emergence of new corruption scandals.

“Every day, a new scandal. One day, one scandal. That is why we are very angry. We thought he was Junior Jesus and that Akufo-Addo would live above corruption, not knowing that he is the epitome of corruption,” he stressed.

Martin Kpebu’s statements underscore the growing dissatisfaction among Ghanaians with the current government’s handling of corruption, reflecting a broader concern about the country’s governance and ethical standards.

Evidence: 70 WhatsApp chats between A-G, Jakpa submitted to court, Jakpa sent 68 of them

Evidence tendered in by the Prosecution in the ambulance trial involving former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and two others indicates that the third accused, Richard Jakpa, a businessman and Attorney General Godfred Dame shared 70 chats on WhatsApp.

On Tuesday, it was revealed in court that a majority of the texts on the social media platform were sent by the third accused.

Richard Jakpa who mounts the witness box today is said to have sent 68 messages to the A-G whereas Mr Godfred Dame sent 2 messages in reply.

Richard Jakpa is currently undergoing cross-examination by the Director of Public Prosecutions, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing ambulance trial.

This follows the completion of cross-examination by lawyers representing Dr. Ato Forson, the first accused, last Thursday, June 13.

Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, serving as an additional High Court judge presiding over the case, called upon the Prosecution after Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s legal team, led by Dr. Abdul Basit Aziz Bamba, concluded their cross-examination on June 13, 2024.

Earlier, the Court had admitted an audio recording into evidence, capturing a conversation between Godfred Dame and Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the case.

Dr. Ato Forson, the current Minority Leader in Parliament, and businessman Richard Jakpa face allegations of deliberately causing financial loss to the state amounting to 2.37 million euros through the procurement of ambulances. Both have pleaded not guilty and are currently standing trial.

Mr. Jakpa is expected to endure a thorough examination from the Prosecution, anticipated to last at least five hours, in accordance with the Case Management Completion plan.

Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal filed by the legal representative of Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, against an Accra High Court’s decision to dismiss an application for mistrial in the ambulance trial.

Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, presiding over the ambulance trial, ruled that the application filed by former Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson was not tenable.

The application alleged professional and prosecutorial misconduct on the part of Attorney-General Godfred Dame, referencing a tape in which Dame and a co-accused were purportedly discussing matters before the courts.

The judge found no statutory basis to declare a mistrial or to investigate the Attorney-General’s conduct.

Ablakwa presents petition to Akufo-Addo over sale of SSNIT hotels

North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has successfully petitioned President Akufo-Addo over the sale of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels to Ghana’s Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

On Tuesday, June 18, representatives of the President received the petition on behalf of Nana Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House.

Reading out the petition, Mr Ablakwa asked the president to halt the sale of the hotels as it was not in the interest of the country. He also called on the president to investigate government officials who deliberately sabotage state institutions in order for politicians to acquire them.

He believes sanctioning and relieving such individuals of their positions will serve as deterrent to others.

Meanwhile, several individuals who partook in today’s protest have been hospitalised.

The protest, organized by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, saw tensions escalate when police used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Ablakwa confirmed that some of the injured protesters have been transported to a health facility for treatment.

According to him, some protestors collapsed after being pepper sprayed without provocation. He was not able to indicate the exact hospitals they were sent to. He however noted that he will engage his team and visit the victims at the health centres they have been admitted to

The demonstration aimed to halt the sale of four SSNIT hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, a company owned by Bryan Acheampong.

In a fervent address, Mr. Ablakwa expressed his determination to prevent the sale. “It has become the whole of Ghana versus the few lootocrats who are determined to continue with their state capture, and I am clear in my mind that they will have no choice but to listen,” he said.

“Even if you don’t listen and you try to sell this hotel, how are they going to have access to the hotel? How? Because we will block that access. These are our assets, and we are saying you haven’t consulted us.”

He further emphasized, “Rest assured, we are confident these hotels will not be sold.”

If you’re a saviour, save Rock City from making losses – Ablakwa tells Bryan Acheampong

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has raised doubts about the capability of Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, to revamp the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels he intends to purchase through his company, Rock City Hotel Limited.

Speaking to the media during a protest against the transaction at Labadi Beach Hotel, Mr. Ablakwa criticized the deal as part of what he called the Akufo-Addo-led government’s looting of state assets. He pointed out that while Labadi Beach Hotel and Ridge Royal are profitable, Rock City Hotel Limited has been consistently reporting losses.

Mr. Ablakwa questioned the argument that Mr. Acheampong has expertise in hotel management, highlighting that Rock City Hotel Limited had incurred losses and failed to pay taxes last year, according to GRA filings.

The MP had earlier raised concerns about SSNIT selling 60% of its stake in the hotels to a minister, and he challenged the notion that Mr. Acheampong could improve the performance of the state-owned hotels.

Furthermore, Mr. Ablakwa criticized Mr. Acheampong for not utilizing his expertise for national benefit while serving as a cabinet minister, accusing him of reserving his skills for his private ventures.

The controversy surrounding the sale of the SSNIT hotels has sparked debate about the government’s handling of state assets and the criteria for selecting investors for such transactions. The outcome of this dispute remains uncertain, with potential legal and political implications for all parties involved.

A tragic accident in Konongo, in the Asante Akim Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has resulted in the deaths of two motorbike riders.

The collision, which occurred on the Konongo-Agogo highway, claimed the lives of 30-year-old Iddrisu Awudu and 33-year-old Kwaku Osei.

According to a police situational report, Awudu was riding an unregistered Haojin motorbike from Konongo Township towards the low-cost area when the accident happened.

Osei, the second rider, was traveling from the low-cost area towards Konongo Town. The collision took place in front of FRANBENY PUB along the highway, resulting in a fatal head-on impact between the two riders.

Tragically, both Awudu and Osei lost their lives instantly. Their bodies were transported to the Konongo Central Municipal Hospital for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

Why can’t those less than 40 contest to be president? Was JJ 40 then? – La Wulomo quizzes

La Wulomo, Nuumo Yemoh Obroni VIII, has questioned the rationality of the 1992 constitution over its criteria for who can become president of the Republic of Ghana.

Article 62 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution outlines the qualifications for election as President, requiring candidates to be Ghanaian citizens by birth, at least forty years old, and otherwise eligible to be elected as a Member of Parliament.

Engaging the media at Tuesday’s demonstration to compel President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to prevent the sale of these hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by Ghana’s Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, the La Wulomo vented his displeasure over the qualifications as indicated in the constitution.

He believes that anyone capable of handling the affairs of the country, regardless of their age- once considered an adult, should not be barred from contesting to become president.

He questioned the fairness of the constitution at the time it was enforced. In 1992, Ghana was governed by the late Jerry John Rawlings. Nuumo Yemoh Obroni VIII quizzed whether Rawlings had attained the age of 40 before being allowed to be President.

Checks by TIGpost indicate that Rawlings was over 40 years old in 1992. The late Rawlings born on June 22, 1947, was 45 years old in 1992.

Meanwhile, respected lawyer, Tsatsu Tsikata has rubbished the often touted claim that the 1992 Constitution was specifically designed to empower, as well as protect the man who assented it into law, the late Flt Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, first President of the Fourth Republic.

“When I hear a call for review of the Constitution that is based on the wholly false premise that it was a Constitution just designed for Flt. Lt. Rawlings, I wonder if it is just ignorance or brazen falsehood or perhaps a toxic combination of the two that is on display”.

We will block every access even if you sell Labadi Beach Hotel to Bryan – Ablakwa

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has taken a firm stand against the sale of four Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by Ghana’s Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

Leading a demonstration today, Ablakwa has declared his determination to block any attempt to finalize the sale.

In a passionate address to the media, Ablakwa stated, “It has become the whole of Ghana versus the few lootocrats who are determined to continue with their state capture, and I am clear in my mind that they will have no choice but to listen. Even if you don’t listen and you try to sell this hotel, how are they going to have access to the hotel? How? Because we will block that access. These are our assets, and we are saying you haven’t consulted us.”

Reiterating his commitment, he added, “Rest assured, we are confident these hotels will not be sold.”

The protest, organized for today, aims to compel President Akufo-Addo to intervene and prevent the sale of the SSNIT hotels.

Ablakwa also mentioned that he expects officials from the presidency to meet the demonstrators and receive their petition for submission to the president.

    SSNIT Hotels saga

In a recent commentary on the matter, Ablakwa shared an internal memo between the agri-minister Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotels Limited and the state-owned pensions company, SSNIT.

The “SSNIT-ROCK CITY GROUP SALE OF STAKE IN SSNIT HOTELS NEGOTIATION” paper provided a predetermined selling position for each of the hotels in question, including Elmina Beach Resort, La Palm Royal, Ridge Royal, and Labadi Beach Hotel.

According to SSNIT’s appraisal, the combined value of all four hotels was more than US$121 million, although Rock City’s offer was just US$61.2 million.

“The SSNIT memos in my possession reveal that SSNIT’s objective expectations based on valuation reports of 60% stake in the 4 hotels (Labadi, La Palm, Ridge Royal & Elmina) range from a minimum value of US$80,406,630.00 to a maximum of US$121,315,643.00.

“From the intercepted memos, Hon. Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City offer fell far below the minimum value of the 4 hotels. Hon. Bryan Acheampong’s below par bid was US$61,200,000.00,” he added.

He noted the significant losses that SSNIT stood to make if they pushed ahead with accepting the Rock City offer.

Ablakwa was the first to report on the planned sale of SSNIT’s stake in the said hotels and has since adduced evidence to prove the deal was against the interest of the state and pensioners in particular.

He has also filed a petition at CHRAJ to probe possible conflict of interest over the minister’s role in Rock City and his political position as minister and Member of Parliament.

Ghanaians choosing Dutch passport over PhD reflects a failed state – Prof Gyampo

Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has noted that it is a shame some Ghanaians value a foreign country’s passport over the acquisition of higher education.

In his view point, such perception is a reflection of a failed state and noted how the current state of the country in no way reflects the dreams Ghana’s first president Dr Kwame Nkrumah had for this country when he fought for its independence.

“PhD or Dutch passport? It’s symptomatic of a failed state. The nation builders, who are supposed to be helping to build the nation are choosing the passports of another country and they are priding themselves in cleaning toilets over PhD. We should bow down our heads in shame. This is not the Ghana Kwame Nkrumah envisaged. This is not the spirit Kwame Nkrumah wanted to develop in Ghanaians that we will be so patriotic and hold our passport with a certain pride,” he said.

This comes after Kofi Gabs, a well-known Ghanaian social media personality residing in the Netherlands, who makes ends meet by cleaning toilets sparked a significant controversy with his comments made a fortnight ago on the value of educational achievements in Ghana.

In a video that has since gone viral, Gabs argued that his Dutch passport holds more practical value than a PhD from Ghana.

Contributing to discussions on TV3’s The Key Points, Prof. Gyampo shared his disgust by how some Ghanaians who have sought greener pastures abroad have taken satisfaction in engaging in menial jobs overseas.

Gabs shared his personal experience of applying for a visa to visit a friend in the United States via the ESTA app, emphasising the ease with which he received approval thanks to his Dutch citizenship.

He highlighted the swift and uncomplicated process, suggesting that it was significantly smoother than what he would have faced with a Ghanaian passport. Gabs went further, asserting that the tangible benefits of holding a Dutch passport outweigh the prestige of obtaining a PhD in Ghana.

The reaction from the Ghanaian community has been mixed but predominantly critical. Many Ghanaians took to the comments section of the post to defend the value of advanced degrees from their home country.

La Wulomo joins demonstration against the sale of SSNIT hotels

The ongoing demonstration against the sale of four Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels has taken a spiritual turn, with the La Wulomo, Nuumo Yemoh Obroni VIII, and several Ga traditional authorities joining the protest.

Led by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for North Tongu, the demonstration aims to compel President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to prevent the sale of these hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by Ghana’s Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

During the early stages of the protest, the La Wulomo performed a traditional libation ceremony. An interpreter at the scene reported that the Ga Wulomo invoked curses on government officials involved in the alleged illegal conversion of state facilities and resources.

Ablakwa, addressing the media, reiterated the protesters’ determination: “It has become the whole of Ghana versus the few lootocrats who are determined to continue with their state capture, and I am clear in my mind that they will have no choice but to listen. Even if you don’t listen and you try to sell this hotel, how are they going to have access to the hotel? How? Because we will block that access. A near confrontation occurred between a driver transporting passengers to Circle and a female passenger.

Although the cause of the tension remains unknown, a video circulating on social media captured portions of their heated argument, which nearly escalated into a physical altercation.

In the video, the male driver is seen insisting that the female passenger, who is not yet visible in the shot, disembark from the vehicle. He loudly asserts his ownership of the public vehicle and refuses to allow the lady to continue her journey.

As the situation intensifies, other passengers disembark to make way for the lady. She eventually alights and appears ready to confront the driver. Expressing her displeasure, she is quickly surrounded by other passengers who intervene to prevent a physical fight.

Moments later, as the driver moves, screams can be heard, suggesting he might be planning to do something untoward to the lady. Fortunately, a disaster was averted, and the remaining passengers re-boarded the vehicle. The bus then took off without the lady who had quarrelled with the driver.

  • 5.46% of intra-African Trade in 2023 attributed to Ghana – Report

5.46% of intra-African Trade in 2023 attributed to Ghana – Report

Ghana has significantly increased its share of intra-African trade, according to the 2023 African Export and Import Bank (AFREXIM) Trade Report.

The report highlights Ghana’s substantial growth in trade within the African region, underscoring the nation’s increasing economic integration on the continent.

In 2023, Ghana’s share of total intra-African trade rose to 5.46%, marking a more than 27% increase from 2022. The value of Ghana’s exports to other African countries reached over $6 billion, compared to $4.73 billion in the previous year. This growth reflects Ghana’s expanding role in the African trade landscape.

On the import side, Ghana brought in goods and commodities worth $1.3 billion from other African countries. This indicates that Ghana is importing less relative to its exports, showcasing a positive trade balance within the continent.

The report underscores Ghana’s effective utilization of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement. Despite initial concerns about Ghana’s readiness to capitalize on the pact, the nation has demonstrated substantial engagement.

The AfCFTA Secretariat confirmed that trade under the agreement’s rules commenced in January 2021, with meaningful commercial activity starting in October 2022 through the Guided Trade Initiative.

This initiative enabled seven pilot countries, including Ghana, to trade a set of goods on a duty-free basis, enhancing the agreement’s implementation and testing its operational environment.

Ghana stands out among the top 10 contributors to intra-African trade, alongside the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Together, these countries accounted for 22.2% of total intra-African trade in 2023. Notably, Ghana, Mali, and Namibia experienced significant gains in their trade volumes, with growth rates of 18.6%, 13.0%, and 5.4%, respectively.

The AFREXIM Trade Report emphasizes the resilience of intra-African trade, which grew by 7.2% year-on-year, reaching $192 billion. This represented 15% of total African trade in 2023, up from 13.6% in the previous year. Despite a tumultuous global landscape, intra-African trade has remained a beacon of hope for sustainable development on the continent.

The report attributes this resilience to the ongoing efforts to implement the AfCFTA, supported by initiatives such as Afreximbank’s Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), the Pan-African Payments and Settlement System (PAPSS), and the Intra-Champ Initiative. These initiatives are not only fostering trade but also nurturing a sense of optimism for the future of African trade and development.

Ghana’s impressive performance in intra-African trade underscores the country’s growing economic influence and integration within the continent. The AFREXIM Trade Report highlights the critical role that initiatives like the AfCFTA play in driving trade and development in Africa. As Ghana continues to leverage these opportunities, it sets a positive example for other African nations, demonstrating the potential for economic growth and cooperation across the continent.

Halt transactions in SSNIT hotels sale immediately – Ablakwa tells Akufo-Addo

The upcoming ‘Hands Off Our Hotels’ demonstration is set to become a focal point for those opposing the sale of a 60% stake in six hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) in Ghana. Scheduled for Tuesday, June 17, the protest has already garnered significant attention.

Leading the charge is Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu and a convener of the demonstration. Ablakwa has not only petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) against the sale but has also been vocal in his opposition, labeling the sale to Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong as an abuse of power.

In a recent address to the media, Ablakwa emphasized the protesters’ key demand: for President Akufo-Addo to immediately halt the sale to Bryan Acheampong. He criticized the government’s handling of the issue, stating that attempts to involve Organized Labour in discussions were merely a facade, and that the sale of state assets, especially profitable ones, must cease.

Support for the protest has been widespread, with the Public Relations Officer of the Trades Union Congress, Naa Ayele Ardayfio Sekyere, voicing her support. She highlighted the broader implications of the sale, noting that it is not just about the hotels but about the pattern of behavior regarding state assets.

“This is a national call and it is exciting that our MPs are leading this. Let’s look at it; how is it that every now and again, we have issues with SSNIT? You can’t do the same thing so many times and expect different results. We are just not making progress as far as SSNIT is concerned,” she said.

The demonstration is expected to be well-attended and is likely to put significant pressure on the government to reconsider the sale of the SSNIT hotels.

  • GCB Capital projects downward trend of inflation in coming months

GCB Capital projects downward trend of inflation in coming months

The disinflation trend in Ghana is anticipated to continue, albeit at a moderated pace, despite challenges such as the depreciation of the cedi and expected hikes in petroleum prices.

GCB Capital, a financial advisory firm, has indicated that the near-term inflation outlook appears elevated. This is attributed to the lagged impact of the cedi’s depreciation, increases in transport fares, and the implementation of the second-quarter 2024 utility tariff adjustment, which are expected to moderate the pace of disinflation in the second half of the year.

However, the continuous disinflation is expected to be driven largely by a favourable base drift, which should sustain the decline in year-on-year inflation. GCB Capital also expects the imminent main crop harvest season to boost disinflation in the food basket.

Additionally, the recent UN-backed cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas, along with the US Federal Reserve’s likely delay in changing interest rates, are seen as positive developments that could improve the outlook for crude oil supply, further supporting the disinflationary trend.

Furthermore, the imminent completion of the second review of Ghana’s programme with the International Monetary Fund and the release of catalytic funding are expected to improve the foreign exchange reserve cushion and trigger a marginal correction, sustaining the disinflationary trend.

Inflation in Ghana reached a 26-month all-time low in May 2024, easing to 23.1% in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This decline was largely driven by base effects, although price pressures from cedi depreciation, transport fare hikes, and seasonal food price effects had a moderating impact.

While the decline in inflation was expected, the pace was slower than anticipated due to these factors. The food basket recorded a sharp disinflation in May, despite a significant increase in the food CPI from April, indicating a more complex inflationary environment.

  • Court of Appeal throws out Ato Forson’s appeal

Court of Appeal throws out Ato Forson’s appeal

The Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal filed by the legal representative of Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, against an Accra High Court’s decision to dismiss an application for mistrial in the ambulance trial filed by the first accused or appleant.

On Thursday, June 6, 2024, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, presiding over the ambulance trial, ruled that the application filed by former Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson was not tenable.

Dr. Ato Forson and co-accused Richard Jakpa had alleged professional and prosecutorial misconduct on the part of Attorney-General Godfred Dame.

Their application referenced a tape in which Dame and Jakpa were purportedly discussing matters before the courts.

However, the judge found no statutory basis to declare a mistrial or to investigate the Attorney-General’s conduct.

    Dr Forson’s legal counsel sought to appeal the court’s decision and the grounds for this appeal as set out in the notice of appeal were as follows;

    a. The Learned High Court judge erred in holding that the Particulars of offences of Counts 1 and 5 contain sufficient information on the specific acts engaged in by the 1st Accused/Appellant that manifest “without due cause and authorization” as contained in Counts 1 and 5 of the charge sheet;

    b. The Learned High Court Judge failed or neglected to give adequate consideration to the case of the 1st Accused/ Appellant;

    c. The Learned High Court judge erred in law by refusing or neglecting to apply the rationes decidendi of the decision of Supreme Court in The Republic v Ernest Thompson & 4 Ors (Criminal Appeal No. (J3/05/2020).

Counsel for the Appellant chose to argue all three grounds together. In doing so, Counsel for the Appellant contends that when the duty of a prosecution in stating the particulars of offence are considered vis-a-vis the requirements of Article 19 (2) (d) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 112 (4) of Act 30, the Respondent has failed to sufficiently particularize the alleged offence.

The Appellant contended that the use of the term “without due cause and authorization” in the charge sheet without stating exactly what conduct constitutes acting “without due cause and authorization” amounts to a breach of the Appellant’s rights under Article 19 (2) (d) of the 1992 Constitution.

In arguing their position, learned counsel for the Appellant made reference to the case of The Republic v. Ernest Thompson & 4 Ors (Criminal Appeal no. J3/05/2020).

The argument was made here that the standard for the formulation of criminal charges is set in that case. Counsel for the Appellant continues and says that for a charge to have been properly formulated, it must sufficiently indicate to the Accused the nature of the acts the commission of which led to the events which the law has prohibited with penal consequences.

The Appellant argued further that for criminal charges to be consistent with Article 19(2) of the 1992 Constitution, they must contain basic facts in precise language that speak to the mens rea and actus reus.

The Appellant contended that charges 1 & 5 of the charge sheet do not sufficiently do so and that the expression “without due cause and authorization” is vague forcing the Appellant to guess what that means and as such those charges should be struck out as defective.

On their part, the Respondent contended that the Appeal must be dismissed since in the view of the Respondent, the charges were properly drafted and adequate particulars had been provided on the charge sheet.

The Respondent, the Attorney-General’s Office, referenced the case of Ernest Thompson (supra) and argued that its obligations when putting together the charge sheet were to “sufficiently indicate to an accused person the nature of the acts the commission of which has led to the event which the law prohibited.”

The Respondent further contended that when drafting the particulars in the charge sheet, it had to do so with the elements of the offence in consideration.

The Respondent broke down the elements of the two charges brought against the Appellant, and concluded that it had sufficiently met its obligations in drafting the charge sheet.

Consequently, having examined the charges under scrutiny, the Court found that they contain sufficient particulars as required under Article 19 (2) (d) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 112 (4) of Act 30 and held that this Appeal is therefore without merit and is dismissed accordingly.

  • European Central Bank seemingly defends BoG on incurring losses

European Central Bank seemingly defends BoG on incurring losses

The European Central Bank (ECB) recently shed light on the sources of central bank profits and losses, underscoring that the primary mandate of a central bank is to maintain price stability, rather than to generate profit.

This explanation was part of a podcast released on February 23, 2023, following the publication of the ECB’s financial statement for the year ending 2022.

The podcast stressed the importance of central banks focusing on their core mission of keeping prices low and stable, even if it means incurring losses.

“In today’s difficult economic environment, central banks across the world are either making or warning of losses. It’s important to remember though that central banks are not like ordinary companies; they can lose money and still operate effectively,” the podcast stated.

Although the discussion centered on the context of the ECB and the central banks in the 20 countries using the Euro, it provided valuable insights into how and why central banks globally incur losses. “A central bank doesn’t work towards making a profit. Its mandate is actually to keep prices stable,” the podcast revealed.

The ECB clarified that, unlike ordinary companies, central banks’ primary objective is not to make profits or avoid losses at all costs. “We are a public institution and like an ordinary company, we can make profits and losses, but making profits or avoiding losses at all costs is not our aim. Our aim is to keep prices stable,” the podcast explained, further stressing that profit is “basically a by-product of what we do, of our mandate.”

Analyzing the composition of costs to the ECB, the podcast highlighted that a significant source of costs is the interest paid on deposits from commercial banks. “When banks deposit money with us, and banks do deposit money with us because they have accounts with us just like citizens have accounts with commercial banks, commercial banks have accounts with the Euro system and we pay interest rates on these deposits and that’s, I would say, the biggest source of costs.”

The ECB sets three key interest rates, including the deposit facility rate, which determines the interest paid to banks on their deposits. This is analogous to the cost of open market operations used by some central banks to manage excess liquidity in the economy.

“These losses that we’ve seen this year have been down to different things, some of them a little bit more tricky to explain than others, but this last point that we talked about, the interest rates, this is key here because they’re closely linked to some of those losses. I just want to zoom out a second to look at the economic environment that we’re in right now because it’s also important. Inflation is high and we are raising our key interest rates to tackle that including the deposit facility,” the ECB explained.

Reflecting on similar scenarios, the Bank of Ghana recently released its Annual Report and Financial Statements, revealing a cost of GH¢8.3 billion on its open market operations aimed at curbing inflation. This substantial cost has significantly contributed to reducing inflation from 54.1% at the end of December 2022 to 23.2% by the end of December 2023.

The Bank of Ghana emphasized that maintaining low and stable inflation is a prerequisite for economic growth and that within a floating exchange rate regime, it also contributes to exchange rate stability. The Bank of Ghana’s medium-term inflation target is 8%, with an acceptable fluctuation range of plus or minus 2% of this target.

  • GES to deploy guidance and counselling personnel to schools to aid rollout of new curriculum

GES to deploy guidance and counselling personnel to schools to aid rollout of new curriculum

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is set to deploy guidance and counselling personnel to Junior High and Senior High Schools in preparation for the full rollout of the new curriculum for secondary education in the country.

This initiative aims to educate and prepare students ahead of the next academic year’s implementation of the new standard-based curriculum, which promises a more flexible and personalized learning experience for Senior High School (SHS) students.

Speaking to JoyNews’ Emefa Apawu on The Probe, Professor Edward Appiah, the Director General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), highlighted the advanced stage of plans for this rollout.

“GES is moving all their guidance and counselling staff who are in the classroom. Now they will be focusing on these activities and they will be having their offices in the schools to guide the children. Of course, the teachers will also help with that,” he said.

He further explained that the initiative aims to start from Junior High School 3 (JHS 3) to ensure students transitioning to SHS 1 have an understanding of the new curriculum.

Regarding the availability of teaching and learning materials for the curriculum, Prof. Appiah assured that materials would be made available before the full implementation.

“NaCCA, our mandate is to assess and approve textbooks, we don’t develop textbooks. However, knowing that this is a new curriculum, we had to develop resource materials for the schools and the learners. For the teachers, we are done. I have told you about the teacher manual. So each manual for each subject,” he explained.

    Background

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) recently launched a manual for teachers in Ghana in preparation for the rollout of the new standard-based curriculum for Senior High Schools. The manual was unveiled by Prof. Edward Appiah at the Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

Before the manual’s launch, NaCCA revealed that the new curriculum for SHS students would allow learners to study both science and arts-related courses simultaneously. This development is intended to enable students to pursue any course of their choice at the tertiary level without limitations. Unlike the old curriculum, where arts students were not permitted to learn major aspects of science, the new curriculum removes such barriers, providing SHS students with more comprehensive educational opportunities.

The Acting Director in Charge of Curriculum at NaCCA, Mr. Reginald Quartey, discussed this during an engagement session with journalists from across the country. The event, held from Tuesday, May 14 to Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho, Volta Region, brought together numerous top journalists from all regions. During the engagement, resource persons from NaCCA guided the media through all aspects of the new curriculum for SHS students.

Mr. Quartey emphasized that the new Senior High School Curriculum would focus on social, emotional, and behavioral issues as well as values. He stated that education should empower individuals to positively contribute to society.

    Subject Combination

NaCCA also disclosed that the new curriculum would allow students to choose a minimum of seven and a maximum of nine subjects, depending on their strengths. Talented students, however, can choose to take more than nine subjects. The curriculum has been designed for grammar, STEM, and technical schools across the country.

With these comprehensive changes, the GES and NaCCA aim to create a more inclusive and holistic educational environment that prepares Ghanaian students for diverse and successful futures.

Building collapse at Ashaiman kills 1, 4 others hospitalised

Residents of Community 22 in Ashaiman are in mourning following a tragic incident that claimed the life of a 46-year-old carpenter, Kwesi Yobo Dankwa.

The unfortunate event occurred on Saturday morning when the beams of an uncompleted building collapsed, instantly killing Dankwa. Four other individuals were trapped under the rubble but were rescued and rushed to Tema General Hospital.

The deceased carpenter had been called to work on the building for the first time that morning, according to information obtained by Joy News.

One of the workers on-site, Isaac, recounted the sudden collapse, describing it as an accident. He narrowly escaped being trapped under the rubble himself.

The swift actions of residents, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, NADMO, and the police facilitated the rescue of the trapped individuals. DOIII Ebenezer Yenzu, Tema Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, detailed the emergency response and confirmed that the deceased carpenter had unfortunately passed away.

After addressing the situation, Mr. Yenzu warned residents to stay away from the building due to concerns about its structural integrity.

Assemblymember for Moni Obaanye Electoral Area, Kudovor Kenneth, revealed that he had previously cautioned the workers and requested a permit for the two-story building.

A visit to the deceased’s family revealed a scene of profound grief, as they were initially unaware that Kwesi Yobo Dankwa was among the victims. The family had been praying for the miraculous escape of those trapped, only to be devastated by the news of his death.

Some residents suspect that the recent heavy rains, which may have weakened the building structure, contributed to the collapse. Investigations into the circumstances leading to the collapse are underway.

There is no Kennedy Agyapong supporters, there is no Vice President supporters, we have NPP supporters.”

“I am not selfish. People have come to me to go independent, but that is not the wise thing to do and therefore I have refused to do that,” he further stated.

Meanwhile, well-known musician and media personality, Blakk Rasta openly criticized Kennedy Agyapong for endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP flagbearer.

Rasta pointed out that Agyapong had previously vowed not to support Bawumia due to unresolved issues, making his current endorsement confusing.

Blakk Rasta feels that Agyapong’s decision to publicly support Bawumia ahead of the 2024 elections could damage his political career, considering the party’s internal dynamics.

Speaking on the UrbanBlend show on 3FM, Rasta condemned the advisers who pushed Agyapong to endorse Bawumia, calling it an ill-advised decision with potentially negative repercussions.

  • Construction works on Tamale-Walewale road stalled over debt restructuring program

Construction works on Tamale-Walewale road stalled over debt restructuring program

Minister of Roads and Highways, Asenso Boakye, has attributed the delay in commencing construction on the first phase of the Tamale-Walewale Road project to the government’s debt restructuring program.

The project, inaugurated by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in June 2022, aimed to dualize the 83km highway and be completed by April of the same year.

The N10 (National Route), part of the Central Corridor Road System, plays a crucial role in trade between Ghana and its neighbouring landlocked countries, as well as connecting Accra to the north of the country.

However, despite its strategic importance, the highway has been neglected and is in poor condition.

During the inauguration, Vice President Bawumia highlighted the project’s goals to enhance intra-urban, regional, and national trade, strengthen regional economic integration, and reduce the cost of doing business.

Two years later, construction has yet to begin. Minister Asenso Boakye, speaking in Walewale after touring the North East Region, explained that the delay was due to suspended disbursements caused by the government’s debt restructuring program.

He assured that construction would resume after negotiations by the Finance Ministry, stating, “Very soon, we are about to finish the negotiation, and contractors will come back to the site to continue with that project.”

During his tour, the Minister inspected several road construction projects in the Mamprugu Moaduri District, including the completed 52km Wiase-Yizesi-Soobiinsi road.

He also visited the Yagaba-Kubori-Mankarigu road, the Yagaba-Prima road, and the Yagaba-So road. In the West Mamprusi Municipality, he inspected the Wulugu-Kpasenkpe road, the Mishio-Prima bridge, and the Walewale township roads project.

The Minister expressed dissatisfaction with the slow progress on the Mishio-Prima bridge project, urging contractors to expedite the work.

Contractors, in turn, requested the release of funds to meet the project’s timeline. The Roads Minister concluded his tour by inspecting the Walewale township roads project, expressing confidence in the contractors’ ability to finish the projects ahead of schedule.
