7 containers destroyed in fire outbreak at Agona Swedru Osama Lorry Station

A fire outbreak at the Osama Lorry Station in Agona Swedru resulted in the destruction of seven containers holding various items.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, May 10, 2024, and was swiftly responded to by firefighters from Agona Nsaba, led by Assistant Station Officer (ASTNO) Francis Amonoo, with support from the Winneba Fire Station.

Despite facing challenges due to the local fire tender being out of commission, the firefighters managed to bring the fast-raging fire under control and completely extinguish it by 03:30 hours, preventing it from spreading to nearby properties.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

However, two containers containing yams, clothes, and plastic containers were partially damaged, while seven other containers holding refrigerators, roofing sheets, car spare parts, and utility items were completely destroyed.

The prompt and coordinated efforts of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), along with the collaboration of firefighters from Agona Nsaba and Winneba, played a crucial role in averting a potential catastrophe.

  • BoG Governor preaches fintech investment at 3i Africa Summit

BoG Governor preaches fintech investment at 3i Africa Summit

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, has emphasized the need for increased investment in Africa’s fintech sector.

He believes that such investments are crucial for accelerating development and fostering innovation within the industry.

Dr. Addison highlighted the importance of start-ups being able to access capital, as this plays a significant role in unlocking the sector’s potential.

“…The lack of requisite investment in African fintechs could slow the pace of innovation and scalability of solutions in achieving the desired impact of a digitized Africa,” he said.

Dr. Ernest Addison delivered these remarks during the 3i Africa Summit at the Accra International Conference Centre. The summit aimed to drive momentum for Africa’s digital finance agenda by bringing together finance, policy, and technology sectors.

Dr. Addison emphasized the importance of directing adequate capital towards startups. This, he believes, will enable them to develop credible prototypes of home-grown solutions that address inefficiencies across the African continent.

“Without sufficient capital, brilliant ideas and the prototypes of fintech startup solutions with the potential to address diverse financial service needs fail to progress to production,” Dr Addision said.

Also present at the event was Finance Minster, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam.

In his view, “for Africa to realise our development ambitions, we must all collate around an African agenda that delivers capital by leveraging public-private partnerships, venture capital, impact investing, and donor funding.

“An agenda that delivers investments in digital infrastructure, extended mobile network coverage and established broadband networks for widespread fintech adoption and financial inclusion in underserved areas,” he added on Monday, May 13.

Over the next three days, participants will engage in a multifaceted forum covering policy discussions, international intellectual resource alignment, entrepreneurial pursuits, and investment networking.

The aim is to facilitate crucial conversations and strategic alliances that will nurture the growing African digital economy and fintech sector.

Newmont has made a generous donation of medical consumables valued at GH¢129,000 to the Children’s Ward of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The donation includes essential items such as a Mobile Portable Electric Suction Machine, Pulse Oximeter-Promedic, 10L, 40L, and 50L Oxygen Cylinders, and Food Warmers, among others.

This contribution highlights Newmont’s commitment to not only the safety and well-being of its workforce but also to the broader community.

The donation was the result of a needs assessment conducted by Newmont’s Health and Safety team, focusing on the critical health challenges faced by the ward.

As the third-largest hospital in Africa and the leading referral center in Ghana, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital plays a crucial role in providing pediatric and childcare services in the country.

Dr. Taiba Jibril Afaa, the Acting Head of the Department for the children’s ward at the hospital, expressed gratitude for the timely donation, noting that it will significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to provide quality healthcare to the children under their care.

“We want to express our sincere thanks to Newmont for their generous support during this time of oxygen shortage.

“The resources provided will be put to good use, and we look forward to building a strong relationship with Newmont in future. Thank you for your help,” she said.

Ms Faustina Maclar (right) presents the items on behalf of Newmont to Dr. Taiba Jibril Afaa

The Head of Safety and Sustainability at Newmont’s business unit in Africa, Ashley Armarego, emphasized that the donation was the outcome of cross-functional collaboration. He expressed happiness that the company is continuing to positively impact people’s lives through its operations.

“I am proud of the team’s dedication to the well-being of the communities in which we operate. Safety is our number one priority in Newmont and at the core of our operations.

“It is on the back of this, that we extend this value beyond our walls into our host communities. Supporting the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital’s Children’s Ward is one of the many things that give Newmont’s purpose its essence,” Ashley Armarego said.

  • Revealed: Abraham Bawumia, brother of Dr Bawumia, grabs a ‘sweet’ GHC166m deal

Revealed: Abraham Bawumia, brother of Dr Bawumia, grabs a ‘sweet’ GHC166m deal

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has raised concerns over a purported ‘sweet’ deal awarded to Resources Access Limited, a company owned by Abraham Bawumia, brother of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The deal, worth GHC166 million, has raised eyebrows and sparked controversy, especially considering the company’s alleged history of benefiting from opaque single-source procurements.

Mr Ablakwa, known for his vocal stance on transparency and accountability in governance, highlighted the apparent contradiction in the Vice President’s previous criticism of single-source procurements.

He noted that while in opposition, Dr. Bawumia vehemently condemned such practices, labeling them as overpriced contracts.

However, the recent revelations suggest that under the current government, the Bawumia family-owned company has reportedly benefitted significantly from similar procurement methods.

The MP expressed concern over what he described as a “marauding, unprincipled, and nepotistic” procurement empire, suggesting that the situation is “totally out of control.”

“No Vice President and Chair of the Ghana Armed Forces Council in Ghana’s entire history has engaged in this deplorable conduct.

“Imagine what the NPP, CSOs, media, anti-corruption crusaders, and the larger Ghanaian society would have done to then Vice President John Mahama or then Vice President John Evans Atta Mills (God bless his soul) if during their respective tenures as Chair of the Ghana Armed Forces Council, road contracts or other contracts within the Ghana Armed Forces were awarded to their direct siblings?” he wrote in a Facebook post.

He referenced intercepted contract documents and payment vouchers that allegedly reveal a pattern of inflated contracts and preferential treatment for Resources Access Limited.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the contracts awarded to Resources Access Limited include the rehabilitation of selected roads in Teshie Camp, Southern Command, Military Academy Training School roads, partial reconstruction of selected roads in Accra, and the construction of the Sunyani By-Pass Outer Ring from Kumasi Berekum Road. These contracts, he claims, have contributed to the company’s substantial earnings from the government.

The MP also raised concerns about apparent conflicts of interest, pointing out that Vice President Bawumia chairs the Ghana Armed Forces Council, which oversees military-related contracts. He questioned the ethics of awarding such contracts to a company owned by the Vice President’s brother.

Mr Ablakwa’s revelations come at a time when the government is facing criticism over its handling of procurement processes and economic management.

The MP called for greater transparency and fairness in awarding contracts, emphasizing that all businesses should have equal opportunities to thrive.

“This is not the Ghana we deserve. Governments must create an enabling, just and fair business climate for all companies to thrive, and not just for their familial or crony businesses.”

“It is absolutely despicable that Bawumia cannot be trusted to practice what he preaches. It becomes clearer each passing day why Bawumia and the NPP are desperately seeking to break the 8. But the Ghanaian people are determined, and nothing can stop judgment day!” he concluded.

Atlantic Lithium shares now available for trading on GSE

Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, has reacted to the listing of Atlantic Lithium’s shares on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE).

He views this as a significant event, indicating a shift in how Ghana’s mineral wealth is exploited.

Atlantic Lithium, overseeing the Ewoyaa Lithium Project in the Central Region, officially entered the Ghana Stock Exchange on Monday, May 13, 2024, offering shares valued at GHC649,669,053.

The company’s prospectus sets the indicative price for the GSE listing at GH₵4.40, reflecting the valuation from the Primary Listing Market.

Addressing the ceremony, Mr. Jinapor emphasized that Atlantic Lithium’s presence on the GSE aligns with the government’s strategic vision of indigenizing the mining sector and enhancing value addition.

He highlighted that the GSE listing fulfills a crucial requirement outlined in the agreement between the state and the firm, ensuring Ghanaian ownership of the Ewoyaa Lithium project.

The Minister also noted that the GSE listing demonstrates the government’s commitment to positioning Ghanaians at the forefront of the mining industry, particularly in the large-scale mining sector.

“This is to fulfill one of the very important commitment made by the brokers of the transaction reached between the government of Ghana and Atlantic Lithium and their subsidiary, Bavari DV. There have been a lot talks about how the mineral resources of Africa and Ghana has not benefitted the owners of the resources. The reason why it has been so is because we’ve not been able to indigenize the sector and add value to the resources.

“This is the first building blocks indigenizing the mining sector of our country, exploitation of green mineral resources and indigenizing what Atlantic Lithium is coming to do in Ghana. This is to make sure that Ghanaians have a stake in what they are coming to do here. It will mean that Ghanaians can participate in the project. It will ensure that Ghanaians can own share and become stakeholders of this mining establishment,” he said.

The Executive Chairman of Atlantic Lithium, Neil Herbert, stated that his company’s decision to trade on the Ghana Stock Exchange demonstrates its commitment to contributing to Ghana’s efforts in the fight against climate change.

He said “We believe that the company’s listing on the GSE is a true reflection of Ghana’s commitment to playing its part is the fight against climate change by sanctioning long-term lithium production”.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Mr. Martin Ayisi said “I’m excited that the next three years will witness significant event in Ghana with launching galore, started by Atlantic Lithium. This is a new chapter for us and it is one of the cardinal policies of government.”

Managing Director of the GSE, Madam Abena Amoah, recognized the contributions of key individuals and organizations, including the Minerals Commission, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Chamber of Mines, and the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), for their roles in making the deal possible.

A female vlogger’s bag was forcefully taken from her in broad daylight in Nairobi.

In a video on Instagram, it was revealed that the bag contained her ID, iPhone 11 Pro, Go Pro 10, iPod, cash, wallet and bank cards.

Some netizens reacting to the video believe the individual who took the footage of the incident connived with the thief who rode a motorcycle.

“Why do I think the one videoing is part of the snatchers… cos he held the lady from reacting,” a user wrote.

Others highlighted that it is not prudent to have one’s property facing the road instead of the pavement.

“I’m not justifying what they did to her, but basic security”u don’t hang ur bag on d arm facing d road/street” where car, motorbike and humans can have easy access…..this is basic. Sorry for her.”

“Anytime u have a bag with you make sure its on the pavement side of the road,” the users wrote.

Collins Dauda granted bail after arrest for Kukuom voter registration violence

Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Collins Dauda, has been granted bail after being arrested for his alleged involvement in disturbances at a registration center on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

According to a police statement over the weekend, the NDC MP was detained in connection with a recent disturbance during the limited voter registration exercise in Kukuom, Ahafo Region, where one person was injured and hospitalized.

Confirming the bail to Citi News, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, said the legislator was granted bail immediately and maintained that Collins Dauda did not commit any crime.

“He [Collins Dauda] was immediately granted bail. And so he is currently on bail. And the police say that they are conducting their investigation, so he will hear from them. At no point was the Honorable Collins Dauda present at the scene.

“He was not there [at the scene] because he was busy in his constituency monitoring the registration process. So it came to us as a surprise when the police issued that statement, creating the impression as though Collins Dauda had committed a crime when they knew that he was not even at the scene when the said incident happened.”

Sammy Gyamfi further condemned the arrest and urged the police to focus their efforts on apprehending the true perpetrators of the disturbance.

“So we condemn what the police did and we are calling on them to focus on arresting the real perpetrators of that chaos, of those criminal actions. The NPP hoodlums and bandits were led by a known NPP bandit called Anointing.

“He is a notorious guy in the area, everybody knows him, the police know him, they know where he lives. They should focus on arresting and prosecuting those hoodlums who went to the voting centre to harass, intimidate, and brutalise innocent citizens.”

‘Dumsor’ may affect NPP’s performance in 2024 elections – JoeWise

Joseph Osei-Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker, has expressed concern that the current power outages in the country could potentially impact the ruling NPP’s electoral prospects in December if not promptly resolved.

However, he also expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved by next month.

“If we are not able to reverse it completely, yes it may affect our chances. But I am confident we will reverse fully within the next one month,” he said.

While acknowledging some improvements in the power situation in the Bekwai constituency, he stressed the urgency of fully addressing the issue.

“…..but as we speak now, I’ve been in Bekwai for the past ten days and the situation has improved dramatically. I only experienced one power outage,” he noted.

Mr. Osei-Owusu made these remarks during a health walk organized by the Bawumia Ladies Global in the Bekwai constituency to mobilize support for the party ahead of this year’s elections.

He expressed confidence in the NPP’s electoral prospects in the constituency, predicting that they would secure over 90% of the total valid votes cast.

Mr Osei-Owusu urged constituents to unite behind the NPP and Dr. Bawumia in the forthcoming December general elections.

“The Vice-President has a lot of support here, but we needed to maintain excitement and enthusiasm. So, what they did was just to pep people up. 99% of the people living in this municipality support Bawumia,” he said.

He noted that the NDC’s limited votes primarily came from the settler communities, particularly the Muslim population, who have now aligned themselves with Bawumia. This suggests that they will switch their allegiance to the NPP this time.

The lawmaker from Bekwai emphasized that the prevailing perception in Ghana of politicians being seen as dishonest and corrupt is one of the key factors behind his decision to leave parliament. He expressed that these issues weigh heavily on him, as he always strives to give his best.

“Those are the things that truly affect me. It hurts because I always give my best. I have never asked for a bribe from anyone, nor have I taken one. So when people generalize and say that we are all thieves, it truly affects me,” he stated.

He also said he has done enough and therefore it is important to give the opportunity to others to also lead.

Akufo-Addo is a morally bereft short man! – Barker-Vormawor goes ‘wild’ over treason case

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the #FixTheCountry convener, has directed insults at President Akufo-Addo regarding the treason trial he is facing after being charged 2 years ago.

The trial was expected to address jurisdiction following a motion by Barker-Vormawor’s lawyers challenging the constitutionality of the offence and requesting the judge to refer the issue to the Supreme Court.

However, the trial has been adjourned to May 20 this year.

In preparation for Monday’s proceedings, Barker-Vormawor called on members of the #FixTheCountry movement to show support at court. Nevertheless, the trial did not proceed as planned due to the judge’s ongoing training programme.

Ranting on social media ahead of today’s trial, Barker-Vormawor noted that he does not “want the Attorney-General to file any Nolle Prosequi in this matter” since “he has committed two years to it.”

“I want them to continue the shambolic process they have set in motion. For everyone to see what a sham of a democracy this regime has made Ghana.

“Your President is a morally bereft Short man with the ego of a child lacking growth hormones. No amount of treason trials will obscure the fact of his ineptitude or weak ego! I will be in Court today to answer “Not Guilty Your Dishonour,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

Barker-Vormawor was arrested and charged after a social media post that police investigators claimed contained a clear intent to subvert Ghana’s constitution.

He was detained on February 11, 2022, at Kotoka International Airport upon his return from the United Kingdom.

#FixTheCountry convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, says he is contemplating applying for a live broadcast of the treason trial brought up against him by the State.

He made this statement in a social media post while referencing the live broadcast of the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill lawsuit proceedings.

“I think my lawyers have to apply for Live Broadcast in this too. If the Supreme Court says the Gay Bill proceedings should be live for our people to consume; then surely the Treason of their democracy concerns them,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

The proceedings of the two lawsuits filed by broadcast journalist Richard Dela Sky and researcher Dr. Amanda Odoi, challenging the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as anti-LGBTQ+ Bill was broadcast after the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, requested the Chief Justice to allow live coverage of the proceedings.

He highlighted the considerable public interest in the anti-gay bill as the rationale for the request.

A tour inside the newly commissioned Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi

President Nana Akufo-Addo and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II officially inaugurated Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi, formerly known as Kumasi International Airport.

The ceremony, attended by traditional leaders, government officials, and prominent New Patriotic Party figures, took place in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, on Friday, May 10.

As the Prempeh I International Airport becomes operational in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, the United Kingdom (UK) anticipates a surge in freight movement through Ghana’s ports.

British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, envisions this growth being facilitated by the airport’s inauguration, bolstered by existing partnerships between the two nations and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Here are some key features of the airport.

The modern airport has a terminal measuring approximately 12,000 square meters.

At the entrance, visitors are greeted by the sign “nante yie”, a phrase wishing them well in their journey.

The airport is said to handle 800,000 passengers per annum, 200 passengers per hour, primarily from the middle and northern belt regions.

The airport had a 4-level security check for the in-flight smuggling of illegal materials and illicit drugs.

    Background

There were extensive developments in 1958 and 1959 by the Ghana Government on the runway, navigational facilities and human resource to enhance internal airline operations. The installation of runway and taxiway lights and the extension of the main runway to the southern part in the late 1970’s was another major improvement to the Kumasi Airport.

In 2003, Kumasi was declared an International Airport primarily for regional operations with the full complement of Security, Customs and Immigration staff.

Work on Phase Two (2) of the Kumasi Airport Project began in 2018. It includes the construction of a new Terminal Building to handle one million passengers per annum, two boarding bridges, a road network, perimeter fence, a substation and parking lot among others. The cost of the expansion work is estimated at £66,350,000.

Phase three of the Kumasi Airport Expansion Project involves the extension of the existing runway pavement from 1,981 meters to 2,320 meters, construction of new taxi link and two Apron Parking Stands, an Air Traffic Control Building, and a Fire Station among others. The cost for this phase is estimated at £58,900,000.

The Kumasi Airport is currently served by two domestic carriers namely: Africa World Airlines (AWA) and Passion Air. The Project Contractor is Messrs Contracta Construction UK Ltd.

We won’t let you protect NPP thugs who attack our members during voter registration exercise – NDC tells Police

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned the Ghana Police Service against shielding members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who are caught disrupting public peace during the ongoing voter registration exercise.

This comes after the arrest of Collins Dauda, Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, for his alleged involvement in a violent scene at the Kukuom voter registration centre, an action the NDC has condemned.

According to the NDC, Mr Duada was busy monitoring the ongoing registration exercise in his constituency, Asutifi South and was nowhere near the incident at Kukuom which is located in the Asunafo South constituency.

The party noted that the violence was orchestrated by thugs associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and that NDC members were forced to defend themselves against attacks on their members.

It therefore cautioned the Police against failing to uphold fairness and justice as they carry out their mandate.

“We wish to remind the Ghana Police Service of their responsibility to protect all stakeholders in the ongoing voter registration exercise. The Ghana Police must display professionalism and impartiality in maintaining law and order, and be fair to all actors in the political space.

“We cannot accept a situation where the Police choose to watch on and take little action against NPP thugs who unleash unprovoked violence on NDC supporters in broad daylight.”

The NDC also noted that it is “concerned by the widespread violent incidents across the country in which NDC supporters have been at the receiving end of unprovoked brutalities, intimidation and harassments from the ruling New Patriotic Party, as happened in Adugyama in the Ahafo-ano South East Constituency in the Ashanti region, few days ago.”

“Even though we in the NDC will never initiate any such attacks, let it be known, that our supporters reserve the right to defend themselves against any violence or attacks,” the party added in a statement.

In a statement signed by Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC noted that on or about 10:00am on Saturday, 11th May, 2024, a group of thugs belonging to the ruling New Patriotic Party numbering about 40, besieged the Asunafo South Constituency registration center at Kukuom.

Wearing face masks and dressed in what looked like military apparel, these NPP thugs unleashed violence on the registration center. They attacked and chased away perceived first-time NDC voters numbering about 150, who were in a queue waiting to be registered.

These hooded NPP thugs who were led by one “Anointing”, threatened the accredited NDC agent, Police Officers and other observers, insisting that they will not allow the first-time voters to be registered. The attacks persisted from 10:00am until 3:00pm on that fateful day.

At about 3:00pm, the Police at Kukuom called for reinforcement from the Regional Police Command at Goaso. This did not however deter the NPP bandits, who continued to engage in heated verbal exchanges with the Police at the scene, insisting that they will not allow the perceived supporters of the NDC to register.

In the midst of the pandemonium, one Daniel Arthur, a known NDC member and the Assembly Member for the Denyase Electoral Area: Abu, the NDC Coordinator for Asarekrom Electoral Area as well as the NDC’s registration agent at the center, were severely brutalized by the NPP thugs.

Upon hearing about the ongoing chaos, some NDC supporters, rushed to the scene to ascertain the situation for themselves and offer some support to the NDC supporters who were under attack. Upon seeing the NDC supporters, some of the NPP thugs bolted. Calm was restored at the center for sometime, allowing some of the harassed supporters of the NDC to
        register.

In a sudden turn of events, one of the NPP thugs drove across and blocked the road when the Asutifi South NDC supporters were leaving the center. He then pulled a gun and began to shoot indiscriminately at the NDC supporters in their vehicle. At this point, the NDC supporters in exercise of their right to self-defence, shot back to deter the thugs. No one sustained gunshot injuries.

This fact was corroborated by the Police in their investigative report read to Hon. Collins Dauda, MP for Asutifi South, in the presence of Hon. Eric Opoku, MP for Asunafo South, at a meeting on the morning of Sunday, 12th May, 2024.

Meanwhile, Mr Dauda has been detained in connection with a recent disruption during the limited voter registration exercise in Kukuom, Ahafo Region, where one individual was injured and hospitalized.

The NDC has condemned the Ghana Police Service’s arrest of Collins Dauda, Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, stating that it lacks merit.

Reports that GHC3.6m spent on KMA’s Krofrom Market is unaccounted for are false – Fidelity Bank

Fidelity Bank has provided clarification regarding the Krofrom Market Redevelopment Project following a press release issued by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on May 10, 2024.

The bank has outlined the following facts:

            1. In November 2020, the KMA transferred GHS 5 million as advance mobilization into the KMA-Krofrom Market Redevelopment project account at Fidelity Bank. These initial funds were from KMA’s own resources.
            2. In December 2020, at KMA’s request, Fidelity Bank approved a GHS 5 million short-term loan facility for the project, to be disbursed based on the progress of work done.
            3. In February 2021, Fidelity Bank disbursed GHS 4 million from the approved facility to KMA. KMA then utilized this and their own funds of GHS 4.6 million to support payments to project contractors totaling GHS 8.6 million under the first phase of the project.
            4. In December 2021, KMA fully repaid the outstanding facility of GHS 4 million to Fidelity Bank.
            5. Fidelity Bank asserts that there is no missing or unaccounted for amount of GHS 3.6 million as indicated in KMA’s release. The GHS 8.6 million disbursed for Phase 1 comprised GHS 4 million from the approved facility and GHS 4.6 million from KMA’s contribution towards the project.

Fidelity Bank also confirms that it has maintained open communication with KMA regarding the project fund, exchanging letters and emails since April 5, 2023.

They have provided all necessary information as of September 27, 2023, and remain open to further communication, with all correspondence on record.

Arresting Collins Dauda was unnecessary, he was not close to the scene – NDC tells Police

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly criticized the Ghana Police Service’s arrest of Collins Dauda, Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, calling it unjustified.

Mr Dauda has been detained in connection with a recent disturbance during the limited voter registration exercise in Kukuom, Ahafo Region, where one person was injured and hospitalized.

Preliminary police investigations implicated Mr Dauda in the unrest that occurred during the registration process on Saturday, May 11.

However, in a press release issued on Monday, May 13, and signed by the NDC’s Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi, the party vehemently denied the allegations against Mr. Dauda.

The NDC claims that the violence was orchestrated by thugs associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and that NDC members were forced to defend themselves against attacks on their members.

The NDC is demanding the immediate release of Collins Dauda and is urging law enforcement to apprehend the actual perpetrators responsible for the disturbances.

“We wish to place on record that, at no point was the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda present at the Kukuom registration centre on Saturday, 11th May 2024.”

“Contrary to the claim by the Ghana Police Service, Hon. Collins Dauda was busily monitoring the ongoing registration exercise in his constituency, Asutifi South and was nowhere near the incident at Kukuom which is located in the Asunafo South constituency,” an excerpt of the statement said.

Accra, other areas to be hit by thunderstorms today

Residents in Accra and other areas should brace themselves for the possibility of thunderstorms today, according to forecasts from the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet).

The agency has indicated that the rain and thunderclouds observed over the Gulf of Guinea are likely to move inland, leading to thunderstorms, rainfall, and increased cloud cover over eastern portions of the coast and inland regions.

Areas expected to be affected by these weather conditions include Ada Foah, Aflao, Dzodze, Sokope, and the capital city, Accra.

As the day progresses, some parts of the country may experience sunny conditions. However, thunderstorms or rain are anticipated over parts of southern Ghana and a few areas in the north from late afternoon into the evening.

Residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during these potentially inclement weather conditions.

          5. Man United lose to title-chasing Arsenal by a goal to nil

Man United lose to title-chasing Arsenal by a goal to nil

Arsenal clinched an unconvincing 1-0 victory against Manchester United, a win they’ll gladly embrace despite the less-than-stellar performance.

Mikel Arteta‘s side, far from their fluent best, scraped through against a lackluster United team, securing three crucial points.

The lone goal came in the 20th minute, courtesy of Leandro Trossard’s opportunistic finish at the near post, capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Casemiro. The Brazilian midfielder, a mere shadow of his former self, allowed Kai Havertz to slip behind the defense, inadvertently setting up Trossard’s strike.

With Manchester City holding the upper hand in the title race, Arsenal’s hopes rest on their rivals, Tottenham, who face City next. A win for Tottenham could significantly boost Arsenal’s chances of securing their first Premier League title in two decades.

Arsenal found a stroke of luck as a massive storm hit Manchester after the game, leaving the pitch waterlogged. Fortunately for Arsenal, the final whistle came just in time, sparing them any potential weather-related setbacks.

Despite the challenging conditions, Arsenal emerged victorious, with Arteta drenched but undeterred on the sidelines. The win, albeit scrappy, keeps their title aspirations alive as they continue to defy the odds.

The Minority in Parliament is urging the Ministry of Education to provide a detailed plan for the distribution of tablets to Senior High Schools (SHSs) under the Ghana Smart Schools Project (GSSP).

This request aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution process, ensuring that every school and student benefits from the initiative.

Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr. Clement Apaak, made this statement during a session of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education.

The committee conducted a field visit to the factory and offices of KA Technologies Ltd. in Accra, the company responsible for manufacturing the Students’ Mate Tablets being distributed to schools as part of the One Student – One Tablet initiative, aimed at enhancing digitalized teaching and learning.

The committee’s visit was part of its constitutional oversight duties, with a specific focus on education sector matters. During the visit, the delegation toured the company’s production facilities, aftercare services, and call centers, engaging with management to gain insights into the company’s operations.

Led by Chairman Kwabena Amankwah Asiamah and Ranking Member Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, the parliamentary delegation received assurances from the company’s General Manager, Mr. Lawrence Hornuvo, regarding the commitment to delivering high-quality products and services to clients, including the government.

“We pride ourselves in delivering robust, quality products and services in a timely manner and so far, this has not been compromised,”he said.

The Committee Chairman praised the company for its commendable progress thus far and encouraged them to redouble their efforts to ensure universal access to tablets for all students, thereby facilitating their educational journey.

“Actually, coming here has demystified our thoughts on how these tablets were going to get to the students; we have the full understanding of what is on the tablet, its usage and the distribution pattern, quantities to be distributed’,” he said.

EC corrects mistakes in voter registration figures

The Electoral Commission (EC) has corrected errors in its publication of the daily voter registration figures for the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

In a press release issued at the end of day four of the exercise, the EC initially reported that 143,014 eligible voters had been registered.

However, less than 24 hours later, the EC released a follow-up statement acknowledging that there was an error in the figures for day three, specifically for the Upper East region, which had been repeated.

“The Electoral Commission has noted some mistakes in the daily voter registration figures earlier published. The mistakes appeared in the total registered figures stated for days two and three although the individual regional figures were accurate, while the day three figure for Upper East was repeated for day four. All these have been corrected.”

The EC, however, added that the errors did not affect its total tabulation and so “at the end of the four days the total number of registered voters remain 143, 014.”

The voter registration exercise, which began on Tuesday, May 7, aims to register first-time voters and individuals seeking to obtain a voter card. Scheduled to last 21 days, the exercise is set to conclude on May 27, 2024.

I didn’t request Kumasi Airport to be renamed after Nkrumah – Mahama

Former President has denied claims suggesting that he said the Kumasi International Airport should have been renamed after the late former President Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

“They won’t stop the misinformation and disinformation!” he wrote in a post on X.

He shared a flier of Abusua FM that claimed that Mahama said “Kumasi Airport International should have been renamed after Kwame Nkrumah not Prempeh.”

In his address, President Akufo-Addo expressed his joy, highlighting that the inauguration demonstrates his government’s commitment to improving Ghana’s infrastructure to meet the changing needs of its citizens and to position the country as a leader in progress and prosperity in Africa.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the timing of the commissioning, coinciding with the 25th-anniversary celebration of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s enstoolment, is not coincidental but a deliberate tribute to the rich cultural heritage and historical legacy of the Ashanti kingdom.

He stated that renaming the airport to honor Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh I and commissioning it alongside the Asantehene’s anniversary reflects the deep respect and reverence his government has for traditional institutions.

Mahama doesn’t need invitation to participate in Asantehene’s activities – Joyce Bawah

Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has dispelled claims that her boss was not invited by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s private and public functions as part of his 25th anniversary celebration.

An earlier post attributed to Joyce Bawah alleged that John Mahama was not invited to any of the ceremonies taking place as part of the Asante Chief’s celebrations.

But according to Madam Bawah, that news is false as “Both gentlemen enjoy a warm brotherly relationship and let me state without doubt that John Mahama does not require any kind of invitation to participate in any activities be they public or private activities involving Nana Otomfuo Osei Tutu.”

In a post on X, she added that “We have a free pass to Manhyia ignore the fake news from ‘Mr. No Ideas’ and his boys and girls,” while stressing that “the relationship between my Boss, Former President John Dramani Mahama and Nana Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu is a matter of public record.”

She urged those making false claims to desist from that as retribution would be their end should they fail to forfeit such actions.

“Lest I forget: To all those sharing fake news: crime has no expiry date. There are digital footprints that are permanent. You will be dealt with as you continue to peddle these maliciously fake stories. Take note.”

GIPC allegedly struggling to pay staff members as CEO embarks on ‘luxurious’ travels

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) is facing financial challenges, leading to delayed salary payments for its staff.

Sources say salaries for February 2024 were only disbursed on April 3, 2024. This delay has caused difficulties for employees with bank loans, as they are now facing double deductions for February and March.

The financial strain at the GIPC is reportedly due to questionable decisions made by the CEO, Reginald Yoofi Grant. Despite the center’s financial difficulties, Mr Grant is said to engage in luxurious foreign travels, worsening the financial situation.

To address the salary payment issue, Mr Grant is said to have sought financial assistance from various individuals and institutions, including the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President and the Minister of Finance.

Mr Grant’s tenure as CEO has been marked by controversy, including a contract extension beyond the legal retirement age of 65.

Additionally, the decision to relocate the GIPC’s office to a rented property in Cantonments has raised concerns, particularly given the center’s financial constraints.

We will deliver our mandate, trust us – EC tells NDC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to have faith in its dedication and capability to fulfill its responsibilities effectively.

The NDC has expressed concerns regarding the EC’s operations, particularly regarding the ongoing limited voter registration exercise, reports of missing laptops, and the request for serial numbers of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Citi TV on Saturday, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Electoral Services at the EC, sought to reassure the NDC and the public.

He stated, “…They should trust us. As we have been doing, we will continue to do it and when 2024 is done whatever the results will be, you will agree that we have done a good job.”

He responded to the NDC’s concerns regarding the transparency and integrity of the electoral process, including the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

“…I want them to relax. They should train their agents very well. They should follow the registration and pick all the data with respect to the start of day record and end of day record. We are doing it for 21 days.

“So, if you put all your end of day records for 21 days it should give you the total number of people who were registered during this exercise,” he added.

I don’t regret taking manager role at Man United – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has expressed that he has no regrets about taking the job, despite the club’s current challenges.

With a year remaining on his contract, Ten Hag is facing significant pressure following a series of poor results, including a 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

United’s position in the Premier League has slipped to eighth, outside of the European places, leading to speculation that new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe may consider a managerial change.

“I don’t regret being here for one second,” said Ten Hag.

“This is a massive club. You don’t know the challenges you have to face until you are in it. But I wanted this challenge.”

In his first season, Ten Hag led Manchester United to victory in the EFL Cup, ending a six-year trophy drought. He also guided the team to the FA Cup final and a third-place finish in the Premier League.

The former Ajax manager considers these achievements as “over-achievement,” especially given the challenges faced this season. A series of injuries, particularly in defense, has forced Ten Hag to frequently alter his central defensive pairings and has left him without a regular left-back for most of the campaign.

Critics argue that injuries are not a sufficient excuse for United’s recent poor performances. The team has only managed one win, excluding extra-time and penalties, in their last nine games.

Following the defeat to Crystal Palace, reports emerged suggesting that United’s players no longer supported Ten Hag. However, the manager has dismissed these claims.

“There is great team spirit,” he said. “In almost every game they fought.

“Not on Monday [at Palace], that is why I was so disappointed. But in all the other games they have fought. I can’t have any doubts about this.”

          19. It is unnecessary to demand for serial numbers of BVR kits – CDD tells NDC

It is unnecessary to demand for serial numbers of BVR kits – CDD tells NDC

A research fellow at the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Dr. John Osae-Kwapong, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for requesting the serial numbers of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits, deeming it unnecessary.

The NDC had previously demanded that the Electoral Commission (EC) disclose the serial numbers of the BVR kits being used in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise across Ghana.

However, the EC argued in a statement released on Thursday, May 9, that sharing the serial numbers with external entities could potentially compromise the security and integrity of the electoral system and its operations.

Speaking on The Big Issue with Selorm Adonoo on Citi TV on Saturday, Dr. Osae-Kwapong reiterated his position, stressing that the NDC should have faith in the existing processes that guarantee the integrity of the voter’s register.

Responding to if the NDC’s call was not necessary, he said “Yes, in the sense that if really it is the numbers and the integrity of the register then the processes that have been built into it I hope gives them enough assurance that even if you don’t have access to these serial numbers these processes in place would allow you to say we can still accept the integrity of the voter’s register that is produced at the end of the day.”

Spanish champions Real Madrid cruise past Granada

Real Madrid, the newly crowned Spanish champions, secured a comfortable victory against Granada with goals from Fran Garcia, Arda Guler, and a brace from Brahim Diaz.

After a first half with few opportunities, young full-back Garcia opened the scoring in the 40th minute, converting a low cross at the back post for his first goal for the club.

Fellow youngster Guler doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time, with Garcia providing the assist by cutting a cross back to the penalty spot for the Turkey international to finish.

Diaz added the third goal four minutes into the second half, intercepting a stray pass near the halfway line before driving forward and scoring from the edge of the box.

He completed his brace just nine minutes later, calmly slotting home a low finish following a flowing passing move.

Despite several chances for both sides, neither could find the net in the remaining half-hour.

Granada’s relegation to the second tier was confirmed, as relegation rivals Mallorca secured a 1-0 home win over Las Palmas earlier in the day.

The win extended Carlo Ancelotti‘s side’s unbeaten league run to 29 matches, surpassing the previous club record of 28 matches set during John Toshack’s tenure in the 1989/90 season.

Man assaults GWCL staffer in Ashanti Region

The Police in Suntreso, Ashanti Region, have arrested an individual for allegedly assaulting a Ghana Water Company Limited staff member during a disconnection process due to outstanding debt.

The victim, Samuel Owusu Yeboah, was performing meter reading and bill distribution duties in Obronikrom, Kumasi, when the incident occurred on Friday.

Yeboah reported that the customer, identified as Amofa Francis, threatened him unless he reconnected the water supply. This threat led to a physical altercation and the alleged assault.

Despite owing 590, Francis expressed outrage over the disconnection of his metre.

Yeboah informed the Ghana Water Company Limited’s Ashanti South Region management, who accompanied police to arrest the suspect.

The company’s Ashanti Region management has warned against assaulting its employees while on duty, pledging to pursue legal action for justice.

Yeboah received a police medical form, and an investigation is ongoing.

          22. Observe high standards to foster responsible and ethical journalism – Former NMC Chair tells media

Observe high standards to foster responsible and ethical journalism – Former NMC Chair tells media

Former Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Nana Kwasi Gyan Apenteng, has emphasized the importance of media houses adhering to high standards to promote responsible and ethical journalism.

He acknowledges that while media houses may have varying ideological and political interests, it is essential for regulators to establish standards or conventions to guide their practices.

Mr Apenteng believes that setting standards is crucial not only for media organizations but also for individual journalists committed to upholding ethical principles in their work.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Change Speaker Series VII  on Saturday, May 11, he said, “So that we know the difference between news and opinion. So that when we are reporting, say a rally, if it’s an NDC rally, the NPP press won’t say that the numbers were small and say all the negative things. We, the public, may not even know what was actually said at the rally because that is not their interest. Their interest is to denigrate the events and then take our minds off from whatever may have been said and vice versa.”

He suggests that creating standards for news reporting that prioritize ethical values would help distinguish between news, opinion, and commentary.

“So when we are able to set these standards and show that, in news reporting, if the number is 100 across board for everybody, it’s the same as reporting a football match. So once we have trained the sports writers, they may support Hearts or Kotoko, but if the match is reported, the report is the same. The goal was scored in the 54th minute, they are not going to say, it was scored in the 30th minute because that’s what you wish would have happened. And then after that, you can use other interviews and all that to establish other opinions.”

He suggested that media houses should prioritize providing specialized training to a select number of journalists who can serve as election experts.

“If we know that over a period of time, we have trained people who we know will become our eyes and ears within the media houses and they take pride in saying that, the same way as we have got financial reporters and they are very faithful about what they are doing, we need to train some people, not only as political reporters but as election reporting specialists.

“I’m saying this because the objective of the training must be that in the end, the peace that we want to prevail, the fairness that we want to prevail will become their objective.”

Kudus’ solo strike in Freiburg game wins West Ham Goal of the Season

Ghanaian international Mohammed Kudus has been awarded West Ham United’s Goal of the Season for his stunning solo effort against Freiburg.

Kudus demonstrated remarkable courage and skill as he dribbled from his own half, evading defenders before calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper in a Europa League match against the German side.

The announcement was made on Saturday, May 11, ahead of West Ham’s Premier League clash against Luton Town.

The 23-year-old midfielder joined West Ham from Ajax during the 2023 summer transfer window and has quickly become a fan favorite at the London Stadium.

Kudus has been instrumental for David Moyes’ side, contributing to 19 goals in all competitions, with 13 goals and six assists to his name.

You bring an MP aspirant instead of a specialist to save “struggling” NIB – Bright Simons chides gov’t

Bright Simons, Vice President of IMANI Africa, has raised concerns about the appointment of Mr. Tweneboa Kodua Fokuo as Managing Director of the National Investment Bank (NIB).

Mr. Fokuo, who is the New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for the Manso Nkwanta Constituency in the Ashanti Region, will assume the role on Monday, May 13, replacing Mr. Samuel Sarpong.

Mr Simons questioned the decision to appoint a parliamentary candidate for the 2024 election to lead a financially troubled state institution like NIB.

He expressed surprise that the Bank of Ghana would approve the appointment of a parliamentary candidate as CEO of a struggling state bank during an election year.

“You have a state-owned bank that has been struggling for years. It does not have enough capital & could have been shut down if it was private. Instead of bringing a turnaround specialist to fix it, Ghana govt promotes an MP aspirant who will be campaigning in 2024 as the new CEO!” he wrote in a post on X platform.

He added, “I am very curious to know what the @thebankofghana thought when they were informed & asked to approve a request that a VERY BUSY parliamentary aspirant for the ruling party should be the CEO of a struggling state-owned bank.”

Mr. Fokuo emerged victorious in the party’s parliamentary primary, defeating four other contenders. His appointment was announced in a memo to the bank’s staff, stating that he was appointed by “the majority shareholder.”

He succeeds Mr. Samuel Sarpong, who has been at the helm of the NIB since 2019.

In a memo addressed to the bank’s staff, it was stated that Mr. Fokuo was appointed by “the majority shareholder.”

“In addition, Mr. Philip Ofori-Asante has been nominated as Deputy Managing Director, following in Mr. Fokuo’s footsteps. Mr. Ofori-Asante brings considerable banking expertise, and we look forward to introducing him to the team at the appropriate time.

In a statement issued on Saturday, May 11, the palace said “this is to give dignitaries attending the Adae Kese easy passage to the Palace.”

The Manhyia Palace stated that only vehicles displaying the appropriate stickers will be permitted to access the blocked roads.

          27. UNESCO places Ghana’s secondary education 137th out of 167 counties

UNESCO places Ghana’s secondary education 137th out of 167 counties

Ghana’s efforts to expand access to secondary education have been commendable, as highlighted in the recent Legatum Prosperity Index.

Ranked 137th out of 167 countries, Ghana has significantly increased its secondary school enrollment from 42.5% in 2013 to 57.2% in recent years, according to UNESCO.

This improvement represents a significant step forward from its 2013 ranking of 144. However, despite this progress, there remains a stark reality: the quality of secondary education in Ghana is a major concern, ranking 166th out of 167 countries in the Legatum Prosperity Index.

The Legatum Prosperity Index, an annual ranking developed by the Legatum Institute, provides a comprehensive assessment of nations’ prosperity across various indicators, including education.

While Ghana has made commendable progress in increasing enrollment rates, the significant gap in educational quality underscores the urgent need for reform and investment to improve the overall learning experience.

Ghana’s tertiary education sector fares somewhat better, ranking 94th out of 167 countries. While this is a more favorable position compared to secondary education, there is still room for improvement to ensure that tertiary institutions meet global standards of excellence and relevance.

The challenges facing Ghana’s education system are complex. Despite efforts to expand access to schooling, persistent issues such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of teaching resources, and a mismatch between curricula and industry needs continue to affect the quality of education at all levels.

Addressing these challenges requires a coordinated effort from policymakers, educators, and stakeholders.

Investment in education should not only focus on increasing enrollment rates but also prioritize initiatives to improve teaching quality, curriculum relevance, and infrastructure development.

Collaborative partnerships between government agencies, educational institutions, and the private sector can play a crucial role in driving meaningful reforms and fostering innovation in Ghana’s education sector.

Furthermore, leveraging technology and digital resources can provide transformative opportunities to supplement traditional teaching methods, expand access to quality educational materials, and bridge learning gaps across geographical boundaries.

As Ghana seeks to enhance its global standing and develop a skilled workforce capable of driving sustainable development, investing in the future of its education system is crucial.

By prioritizing both access and quality in education, Ghana can pave the way for prosperity, empowerment, and inclusive growth for its citizens.

          28. Education Ministry contests low ranking of Ghana’s secondary education

Education Ministry contests low ranking of Ghana’s secondary education

The Ministry of Education has responded to reports that Ghana ranks 137th out of 167 countries in secondary education, calling them inaccurate and misleading.

The statement comes after the release of the latest Legatum Prosperity Index by UNESCO, which focuses on various aspects of well-being but does not directly measure secondary education.

According to the MoE, the Index evaluates countries based on a wide-ranging framework that includes factors like economic quality, governance, social capital, investment environment, enterprise conditions, infrastructure, market access, living conditions, health, and education.

However, secondary education is not specifically assessed within this framework.

“Therefore, the assertion that Ghana’s secondary education was ranked 137th out of 167 countries within this framework is inaccurate and misleading. The most recent report, from 2023, positions Ghana at 98th out of 176 countries, showcasing a significant improvement from its 2013 ranking of 101,” it added.

The Ministry of Education emphasized that despite the misleading report, Ghana’s overall prosperity has been steadily improving, reflecting positive advancements in various sectors, including education.

          29. Akufo-Addo seeks AU support for reparations initiative

Akufo-Addo seeks AU support for reparations initiative

Ghana has announced its intention to lobby the African Union (AU) to garner backing for a pan-continental initiative aimed at bolstering the call for reparations related to the transatlantic slave trade.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of building bridges and fostering unity within the community to address the reparations issue effectively.

He underscored the need to create a powerful and unified voice that would compel action and lead to consequential decisions.

“It is time that the Caribbean and those of us on the other side of the Atlantic get together on this matter because it is a common fight,” he stated while addressing the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Keith Rowley, at the Jubilee House, Accra.

The President stressed the need to work towards a strategy that would compel the perpetrators of the trans-Atlantic slave trade “to be able to sit down across the table with us and talk about how we can achieve our goals.”

As part of his visit to Ghana, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley paid a courtesy call on the President. His visit coincided with the invitation to celebrate the 25th anniversary of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s ascension to the throne as the Asantehene of the Asante Kingdom.

Dr. Rowley, known for his advocacy for an international entity like an AU-Caribbean body, seeks to promote reparations for African people affected by the slave trade’s atrocities.

The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) reports that approximately 13 million Africans were kidnapped and trafficked across the Atlantic to the Americas, including British, French, and Spanish colonies, between 1501 and 1867. Tragically, about two million individuals are believed to have perished during the horrific Middle Passage.

“Kidnapping, trafficking, abusing, and dehumanising African people and their descendants was as lucrative for Europeans and white Americans as it was traumatising for black people.

“The trans-Atlantic slave trade enriched many white people across occupations and industries—from early European colonists to priests and popes, shipbuilders to rum and textile producers, bankers to insurers—and generated the capital used to build some of America’s greatest cities and most successful companies,” says the EJI.

Despite the enduring benefits that many European and American families, businesses, and institutions derive from the immense wealth generated by enslavement, African communities still bear the burdens of inequality, injustice, poverty, and diminished self-worth.

President Akufo-Addo expressed support for the concept of an international body to streamline the processes involved in securing reparations for the atrocities of the slave trade, stating, “We welcome this idea and will collaborate to make it a reality.”

“I think the people in Addis Ababa, the AU, will be very happy to hear this initiative, especially because of the decisions that have been taken in this last year or two along the same lines.

“It is extremely important for us, for all of us, for our self-confidence and self-worth that this matter is dealt with, if possible, in our lifetimes.

“The people were taken from here and dumped across on the other side of the ocean. So, we have a direct interest,” he told Dr Rowley.

President Akufo-Addo has been pushing the AU leadership for some time to seriously explore the issue of reparations.

“If people can be compensated for the Holocaust, Africans can be compensated for slavery,” he told participants at a recent forum in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

He insisted that the atrocities committed during the slave trade should not be repeated and that Africans would never again allow such evil to be perpetuated against them.

Dr. Rowley praised Ghana’s government for playing a key role in generating public support for reparations to Africans.

“We the descendants of the enslaved would want to be emancipated from that inhumanity, and we have been fighting it with Africa.

“And, we think the time has come for an international body to put this conversation, this narrative to the Western world so that some sort of rectifications could come our way,” the Prime Minister appealed.

Voter registration at Ahafo Ano South East turns bloody as NPP member allegedly attempts to register ‘foreigners’

Two individuals have reportedly sustained injuries following a clash between two groups at a voter registration centre in Adu Gyama, located in the Ahafo Ano South East constituency of the Ashanti region.

The altercation occurred when a group attempted to prevent two students from registering at the center. These students were allegedly brought to the center for registration by a representative of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, other party agents and local residents present at the center objected to their registration, claiming that the students were not residents of the area.

After an initial protest that was temporarily settled, a group of armed individuals arrived at the center, brandishing clubs, machetes, and other weapons. They demanded that the Electoral Commission officials allow the students to register.

In response, the political party agents and other residents resisted, leading to a confrontation that resulted in two individuals sustaining injuries to their neck and arms.

The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the St. Mankraso Hospital in the constituency. The voter registration process at the center was halted as the Electoral Commission works to address the situation.

Man City chase Arsenal for title after Fulham win

Manchester City extended their lead at the top of the Premier League with a dominant 4-0 victory over Fulham, thanks to two goals from Josko Gvardiol and strikes from Phil Foden and substitute Julian Alvarez.

Gvardiol opened the scoring early on with a clinical finish after a well-worked move. Foden doubled City’s lead in the second half with a first-time finish, before Gvardiol added his second with a close-range effort.

Erling Haaland missed a chance to further extend City’s lead, but Alvarez made it 4-0 from the penalty spot after Issa Diop was sent off for a foul on him in stoppage time.

The result puts pressure on title rivals Arsenal, who face Manchester United needing a win to keep their title hopes alive. If Arsenal fail to win, City could secure their fourth consecutive Premier League title with a victory against Tottenham in their next game.

City have now won seven consecutive league games and look formidable as they aim to clinch another league trophy under Pep Guardiola. Fulham, on the other hand, have had a disappointing end to the season, winning just one of their last eight games.

Don’t let the public lose trust in you – Sheikh Aremeyaw to media ahead of 2024 polls

A member of the National Peace Council, the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), and the Chief Imam’s Advisory Board, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, has urged the media to uphold the trust the public places in its work, especially in the lead-up to the December 2024 general elections.

Speaking at the Joy Change-Speaker Series VII on Saturday, May 11, Sheikh Aremeyaw stressed the crucial role of the media in ensuring the safety and integrity of the electoral process. He called on journalists to avoid actions that could create confusion or mistrust among the public.

Expressing concern over the existing distrust between state agencies and political parties, Sheikh Aremeyaw cautioned the media against exacerbating these tensions through their reporting.

He reminded the media of its constitutional duty to promote peace and stability in Ghana, emphasizing that any deviation from this mandate would be a failure on their part.

Furthermore, Sheikh Aremeyaw advised media houses to carefully select panellists, avoiding individuals who might promote divisive or inflammatory rhetoric.

He also urged journalists to refrain from creating conflicts between political parties, particularly the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Highlighting the potential repercussions of irresponsible media behavior, Sheikh Aremeyaw emphasized that journalists, like all Ghanaians, have a stake in the country’s stability. He warned that chaos could lead to displacement and refugee status for citizens.

“The growing mistrust and lack of confidence in state institutions that have something to do with our electoral processes is an issue, and here I am talking about the perception of the judiciary, perception of the police, perception about the Ghana Armed Forces and the role they play in ensuring electoral security. All these things have added to the already heightened situation of suspicion and indeed even the Electoral Commission is not free the suspicion that we are talking about.”

“So given the circumstance, there is already dangerous mistrust and the media shouldn’t add to it,” he urged.
