  • Why Asantehene schooled at Sefwi Wiawso SHS and not Prempeh College

Why Asantehene schooled at Sefwi Wiawso SHS and not Prempeh College

During his 74th birthday dinner on Monday, May 6, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II revealed a personal story of how he was intentionally kept unaware of his royal lineage during his upbringing.

Otumfuo also shared why he couldn’t attend his desired school, Prempeh College, in Kumasi.

According to him, his uncle, then Asantehene Nana Agyemang Prempeh II, shielded him from his royal heritage, a fact he only discovered later in life.

He recounted how he was raised away from Manhyia, the royal palace, by his uncle under the pretense of being his biological son.

Detailing the circumstances, Otumfuo explained that his mother had sought a divorce from his father due to his alleged infidelity. However, his uncle intervened and convinced his mother not to proceed, stating that he hadn’t yet achieved his desired outcome from the marriage. This intervention led to Otumfuo’s birth.

He also shared how his uncles enrolled him in a different high school instead of Prempeh College, his preferred choice.

    Read his narration below:

“So, about four years after my birth, I was given to my uncle Kwadwo Bonsu, called Oheneba Mensah Bonsu who was then Hiahene. It was a ploy between my mother and uncle because my uncle didn’t want me to be raised in royalty.

“So, my uncle took me in as his son. He told me I came after his eldest son, Afodour, and up until recently, I thought I came after him. He sent me to a division school and took care of me.

“They didn’t even want me to know Manhyia so they never brought me there. My biological mother used to come to our house at Ashtown under the guise of visiting her brother, my uncle.

“Once in a while, Nana Asantehene would come and I’ll be asked to serve him and he would ask about my wellbeing but because they weren’t saying anything, I didn’t know him. Through that, I completed division school and had to enter secondary school.

“My uncle took me to Osae to get all my prospectus for Prempeh College. The current Adontenhene’s mother was the one who bought my prospectus.

“I was there one day when they came to tell me I was going to be transferred to a different school from Prempeh. Most of my friends from Ashtown were all at Prempeh College so I also wanted to be there. K.Y. Asafo Adjei, Mark Addo, Kwabena Poku, and others were all there.

“But because they knew what they were doing, it was Sehwi Wiawso that they took me to. Mr. Osae was the headmaster [at Prempeh College] and he said a disciplinarian friend of his had been transferred from Opoku Ware to Sehwi Wiawso so they would take me there.

“Everything had been orchestrated between my two uncles, (Oheneba Mensah Bonsu and Nana Agyemang Prempeh II, then Asantehene.)

“He said Sehwi Wiawso chief is my son, send him there, if he needs something, he will take care of him. After school my elder brother had arrived and he had gained admission at IPS (now UPSA) to go and study accountancy so he asked him to hand me over to my father’s brother, Engineer Asafo Boakye,” he recounted.

  • Dortmund foil Mbappe’s Champions League trophy dream with PSG

Dortmund foil Mbappe’s Champions League trophy dream with PSG

Kylian Mbappe would have envisioned lifting the Champions League trophy for Paris St-Germain in his final European appearance for the club. However, the reality was starkly different.

In a game that was already out of reach for PSG, Mbappe’s last moments in the competition were marked by a slip as he chased a ball he was unlikely to reach. This moment came in the final seconds of injury time, sealing Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 aggregate victory.

Dortmund secured their win with a solid defensive performance, characterized by energetic pressing and aided by a stroke of luck.

When Qatar Sports Investment took over PSG in 2011, their primary objective became winning the Champions League, leading to significant spending.

The pursuit intensified in 2017 with the world-record signing of Neymar from Barcelona, followed by Mbappe’s arrival a year later after winning the World Cup with France.

In 2021, signing Lionel Messi seemed to bring the dream closer. However, despite the star-studded lineup, PSG failed to secure the Champions League.

Since 2017, PSG has dominated domestically, winning six out of seven Ligue 1 titles and multiple domestic cups. However, European success has eluded them, reaching the final once and the semifinals twice.

Their recent defeat to Dortmund highlights their Champions League struggles, with the team failing to convert numerous chances. This loss underscores PSG’s inability to perform at their best in crucial Champions League moments.

Despite these setbacks, there are positives. PSG has shown resilience, notably in their comeback against Barcelona in the quarter-finals.

Manager Luis Enrique is building for the future, evident in PSG’s youthful lineup in the semi-finals. While their Champions League dreams remain unfulfilled, PSG’s journey showcases their ambition and potential for future success.

  • EC considering extending deadline for voter registration exercise after poor start

EC considering extending deadline for voter registration exercise after poor start

The Electoral Commission (EC) has suggested that it might extend the limited voters’ registration period if necessary to accommodate all eligible citizens.

During an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, the EC’s Director of Electoral Services, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, emphasized that the decision to extend the registration period would hinge on the turnout and the number of people remaining in the queue at the end of the scheduled registration period.

This follows the Commission’s experience of internet connectivity issues and other challenges on the first day of the exercise, causing delays in various parts of the country for several hours.

“Extending the number of days for registration will depend. If at the end of the registration period, there are a lot of people in the queue, we will get to know them and address them,” he said on Tuesday.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services

Dr. Quaicoe clarified that while the option of extending the registration period is not completely off the table, it will depend on the circumstances at the end of the registration exercise.

He reassured the public that the EC remains committed to ensuring that all eligible voters have the opportunity to register and participate in the electoral process.

In response, Gildfred Asiamah, the Team Lead for Election Anti-Corruption and Rule of Law at CDD-Ghana, urged the Commission to make timely decisions regarding the potential extension of the registration period.

Mr. Asiamah emphasized the importance of prompt communication with the public, noting that delaying a decision until the second day of the registration exercise may discourage some individuals from participating.

  • We handed over all we had on Cecilia Dapaah to EOCO – OSP

We handed over all we had on Cecilia Dapaah to EOCO – OSP

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) maintains that it provided the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) with all the necessary information to initiate an investigation into former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.

This statement comes in response to EOCO‘s claim that the OSP did not collaborate effectively, which hindered a smooth investigation process.

However, the Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the OSP, Samuel Appiah Darko, has refuted EOCO’s assertion, stating that EOCO cannot blame the OSP for their failure to investigate Cecilia Dapaah.

During an interview on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda on Citi FM, Mr. Darko clarified that every piece of information required by EOCO was provided by the OSP.

“We had a standing committee. Every information that we had and we needed to give to EOCO, the OSP gave to EOCO. And the standing committee that has been working between OSP and EOCO, there are unofficial communications between OSP and EOCO.

“What I am trying to tell you is that EOCO said they want the findings of our work on corruption but you don’t need that because everything has already been kept in the file.”

  • UK authorities arrest Ghanaian for soliciting sex from minors

UK authorities arrest Ghanaian for soliciting sex from minors

A 39-year-old man has been arrested by UK authorities on suspicion of engaging in sexual activities with minors.

A viral video shows officials confronting and interrogating the individual identified as Ishmael Mohammed who becomes emotional when presented with evidence of his alleged actions.

“I don’t know what to do again; please arrest me,” he stated.

The video of his arrest was reportedly first posted online in February 2024.

While admitting to engaging with the girls and travelling for five hours to meet one of them, Ishmael denied having any malicious intent towards the children.

“Why did you arrange to meet her then? Why did you ask for pictures just in her pants? And you were going to buy her a new phone just to have better pictures?” a male interrogator is heard saying.

“So you’ve asked for indecent images of a child as well,” the female official also adds.

Note that the individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Similar to Ghana, the legal age for sexual consent in the UK is 16 years. Therefore, it is considered an offense to engage in sex or sexual activity with a child under the age of 16.

The punishment for underage sex in the UK varies depending on factors such as the age gap, and it can range up to life imprisonment, as the act is considered statutory rape.

  • It was Sir John’s dream to see Bawumia become president – Kate Gyamfua

It was Sir John’s dream to see Bawumia become president – Kate Gyamfua

The National Women’s Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfua, has revealed that the late Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, also known as Sir John, had a vision for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to become Ghana’s president.

She expressed this during her criticism of Charles Owusu, a former associate of Sir John, for deciding to contest as an independent candidate for the Nkoranza parliamentary seat.

Madam Gyamfua described Owusu’s decision as a betrayal of Sir John’s vision and the collective goals of the NPP. She warned that if Owusu’s independent candidacy led to the loss of the Nkoranza seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), she would not hesitate to take action against him.

“It is up to him. You claimed to love Sir John, and one of Sir John’s visions was to see Bawumia become president. So why would you betray him?

“If he makes a mistake for us to lose the seat to the NDC, he will see what I would do to him. But I don’t support him, so I don’t care,” she in an interview on Peace FM on May 4, 2024.

Sir John, a former General Secretary of the NPP, remained a loyal supporter of Bawumia until his passing from COVID-19 complications in 2020 at the age of 63.

  • Finance Ministry gave us permission to auction obsolete BVDs – EC

Finance Ministry gave us permission to auction obsolete BVDs – EC

Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, has defended the commission’s decision to auction obsolete Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).

The IMANI Center for Policy and Education has called for an investigation into the auctioning of the BVDs after 10 of them were found at a recycling facility in Madina.

Despite the Electoral Commission’s explanation that the BVDs were outdated and lawfully auctioned, Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, argues that such actions amount to a misappropriation of state resources and require an investigation.

In a Face to Face interview on Citi TV, Dr. Quaicoe stated that they obtained permission from the Finance Ministry to auction their obsolete equipment, including the BVDs, and that they acted within the law.

He explained that the auction was properly advertised in the Daily Graphic and that the recycling company in Madina, one of six auctioneers, was selected after an interview process.

    “Obsolete” BVDs currently at Madina

“I want to put on record that the BVDs and BVRs were those which were used before 2020, we acquired new ones. So, once we acquired new ones, these ones were obsolete, we’re not using them. They were still occupying space, so the Commission wrote to the district valuer, STC, they did the evaluation of all the materials, and we have documentation to that effect.

“We sent permission to the Ministry of Finance seeking permission to dispose of. They also replied and gave us the permission to go ahead. The Commission interviewed six auctioneers and one of them was picked. And a little recycling company bought them located at Oyarifa, they have EPA approval to do all those things. The auctioneer advertised it, look for February 1, 2024, Daily Graphic.”

When questioned if the EC violated any law in the process of disposing of the machines, he responded, “Not at all, State valuer assessed it, we wrote to the finance ministry, approval was given, and the items were valued.

“They did interviews and the auctioneers auctioned the items. All the money generated was paid into the Consolidated Fund. We went through the legal means.”

He added that the commission is not concerned about the controversy surrounding the auctioneering because they have not committed any offense.

“We’re not worried because we have not committed any offence. The documents are there.”

Supreme Court to hear anti-LGBTQ+ bill suit today

Broadcast journalist Richard Dela Sky and researcher Dr. Amanda Odoi are set to present their respective lawsuits against the passage of the LGBTQ+ Bill before the Supreme Court today, Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

These legal challenges have halted the bill’s progress from parliament to potential presidential assent.

The lawsuits, led by Sky and Odoi, question the constitutionality of Parliament’s approval of the LGBTQ+ Bill, which aims to restrict LGBTQ+ activities and advocacy.

President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has refrained from receiving the bill, citing the ongoing legal disputes.

Sky’s case specifically targets the “Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill,” seeking a declaration of its nullity on constitutional grounds.

His claims cite multiple constitutional articles, arguing that the bill infringes upon fundamental human rights guaranteed by Ghana’s Constitution.

Among Sky’s requests are an order to declare Parliament’s actions unconstitutional and an injunction against enforcing certain provisions of the bill.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear these cases from May 7 to May 9, 2024, as outlined in its cause list.

President Akufo-Addo has pledged to await the Supreme Court’s ruling before making any decisions regarding the contentious LGBTQ+ legislation.

    Reliefs sought

    Mr. Sky in his writ is seeking four declarations and four orders as follows;

    i. A declaration that upon a true and proper interpretation of Article 33(5) of the Constitution of 1992, in light of Article 12(1)(2), 15(1), 17(1) of the ‘Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024’ by Parliament on 28th February 2024, Contravened the Constitution and is to that extend null, void and of no effect.

ii. A declaration that the Speaker of Parliament contravened Article 108(a) (11) of the Constitution, in light of Articles 296(a)(b)(c), by admitting and allowing Parliament to proceed upon and pass The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024 into law as the same imposes a charge upon the Consolidated Fund or other public funds of Ghana.

iii. A declaration that Parliament exceeded its authority under Articles 106(2) and 108(a)(ii) in passing “The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024, as the same imposes a charge upon the Consolidated Fund or other Public funds of Ghana.

iv. A declaration that, upon the true and proper interpretation of Articles 102 and 104(1) of the Constitution, Parliament lacked the requisite quorum to pass “The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values BilI, 2024.”

    v. An order restraining the Speaker of Parliament and the Clerk to Parliament from presenting The Human and Sexual Values Bill, 2024 to the President of the Republic for his assent.

vi. An order restraining the President of the Republic from assenting to The Human and Sexual Values Bill, 2024, as such action will directly contravene the Constitutional safeguards of liberties and rights of Ghanaians.

vii. An injunction barring any attempts to enforce the provisions of The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bil 2024, particularly those criminalizing same-sex relationships and related advocacy efforts.

vii. Such further orders or directions as to this Honourable Court may seem to meet.

In his letter to the Chief Justice, the Attorney General highlighted the considerable public interest in the anti-gay bill as the rationale for the request.

In his words, “Respectfully, in view of the public interest in the cases concerning the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024 (the Bill) I would like to recommend that the media (including radio and television) be given full access to the relevant courts to undertake coverage of all proceedings in those cases concerning the Bill.”

“The cases under reference are as follows: Supreme Court 1. Dr. Amanda Odoi v The Speaker of Parliament and Another (Suit No. J1/13/2023), and 2. Richard Dela Sky v The Parliament of Ghana and Another (Suit No. J1/9/2024).

“It is my respectful view that the transparency to be engendered by a coverage of the proceedings would be in the best interest of the administration of justice.”

Broadcast Journalist, Richard Dela Sky, and Researcher Dr. Amanda Odoi are set to appear before the Supreme Court today, Wednesday, May 8, 2024, to move their respective lawsuits challenging the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill and its possible assent.

Richard Sky, a private legal practitioner, is challenging the constitutionality of Parliament’s passing of the bill, contending that it violates several provisions of the 1992 Constitution. He is seeking various declarations and orders to nullify the bill and prevent its enforcement.

The bill, which prohibits LGBTQ activities and their promotion, advocacy, and funding, was passed by Parliament on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

However, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has yet to assent to the bill, awaiting the Supreme Court’s ruling.

May 8 and days after will see smooth voter registration process – EC

The Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, has assured the public of a smoother registration process starting from Wednesday, May 8.

This assurance follows challenges experienced on the first day of the limited voters’ registration exercise, which caused delays in various parts of the country.

Dr. Quaicoe, speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, attributed the challenges on the opening day primarily to internet connectivity issues.

Despite equipping personnel with necessary tools such as turbonets and data, some devices failed to function properly in the morning, leading to difficulties.

However, by midday, most of the connectivity challenges had been addressed, resulting in a significant improvement in the registration process. Dr. Quaicoe expressed confidence that going forward, such issues would be effectively mitigated, ensuring a seamless registration exercise.

“So for now, everything is working smoothly, so going forward from tomorrow, I don’t think they would have that issue.

“Aside from the internet connectivity issue, there were no other issues, so now that the only issue has been resolved, we are going to have a smoother registration exercise tomorrow,” he promised.

Residents appeal for expedited work on Kpassa Agenda 111 District Hospital

Work on the Agenda 111 District Hospital project at Kpassa in the Nkwanta-North District, Oti Region, has fallen behind schedule, missing the January 2024 completion deadline.

The project, which began in August 2022 and was initially reported to be 30.8% complete in September 2023, is currently at about 65% completion.

The hospital, designed to have a 60-bed capacity, aims to serve over 120,000 residents in the district and surrounding areas.

Despite assurances from the former Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, and the Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, that funding had been secured for the project to be completed on time, the current progress indicates a significant delay.

Workers from the lead contractor, Venus Infrastructure, were observed on site, focusing on various aspects of the project such as roofing, plastering, plumbing, and electrical works. However, the surgical block and residential blocks were yet to be roofed, and the generator yard was still under construction.

The Resident Consultant of the project, Wonder Dzamade, mentioned that if all three contractors were on site, it would be possible to complete the project within a reasonable timeframe.

However, he did not specify the exact reasons for the delay, citing common issues such as delayed release of funds, non-availability of materials, and technical challenges as possible causes.

In response to the situation, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Nkwanta-North, William Kidignan Nawugma, emphasized the importance of providing the necessary resources for the completion of the project.

Residents of Kpassa expressed their desire for the swift completion of the hospital, highlighting the potential improvement in healthcare accessibility and quality of life for the community once the hospital becomes operational.

Don’t vote for Mahama, he will destroy my legacy – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to oppose the candidacy of the National Democratic Congress’ John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming December elections.

He believes that electing the former President would reverse the progress made during his administration and put the nation’s development at risk.

Speaking to supporters at a mini rally in Doboro in the Greater Accra region after visiting the premises of Blue Skies Limited, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his support for Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia as the preferred presidential candidate.

“This is our election year and the limited registration has started. Anybody who hasn’t registered and is eligible should go and register. This is because your right to vote is your power.

“Also, when the time is up for the voting, our job is simple. The person I defeated and my work since I took over, seems not to please him, I cannot hand over power to such a person. He will destroy whatever we have done when he comes.”

He added “I am pleading with you to vote for the person I have worked with for the past seven and half years. I have faith in him and I know that he will come and continue the work I have begun as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”

The Electoral Commission has commenced a nationwide limited registration exercise for individuals who have turned eighteen. The exercise started today, May 7, and is scheduled to conclude on May 20.

However, there have been reports of technical challenges in several locations, hindering the smooth registration of eligible Ghanaian citizens.

Faulty machines stall voter registration process at former EC headquarters

Registration of first-time voters has not yet begun at the former head office of the Electoral Commission (EC) at North Ridge in the Korley Klottey constituency due to a technical hitch.

This center serves Korle Klottey and other constituencies as part of the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

Prospective voters are urging the EC to resolve all issues hindering the commencement of registration. As of 11:30 am on Monday, not a single prospective voter had been registered due to concerns about faulty machines and network issues.

The 21-day exercise aims to register over half a million voters nationwide. It began today, May 7, and will end on May 28, 2024.

Expressing her frustration to Citi News in an interview, a 21-year-old nursing mother who arrived at the center at 8 am appealed to the EC to promptly resolve the challenges.

“I came here like 8 am and the machine too is not working and they said they were bringing a new machine to do it for us and what they are doing here is not good and I feel so bad. We want them to come and do the registration for us.”

Attempts to get officials of the Electoral Commission to comment on the delay proved futile, according to Citinewsroom.com.

“Also, when the time is up for the voting, our job is simple. The person I defeated and my work, since I took over, seems not to please him, I cannot hand over power to such a person. He will destroy whatever we have done when he comes,” he stated.

“…I am pleading with you to vote for the person I have worked with for the past seven and half years. I have faith in him and I know that he will come and continue the work I have begun as Dr. Mahamamudu Bawumia.”

Invest in training of midwives to help improve maternal health – Gov’t told

Bolgatanga-based non-governmental organization, RISE-Ghana, is advocating for increased investment in the training of midwives to enhance maternal health outcomes and ensure the birth of more healthy babies in a timely manner.

According to the NGO, improved health outcomes can be achieved when mothers and babies require less medical intervention both in the short and long term.

In a statement released by its Executive Director, Awal Ahmed Kariama, on May 5, 2024, to commemorate the International Day for Midwives, RISE-Ghana highlighted the crucial role midwives play in empowering women to manage their reproductive health.

They provide education on various issues, including contraception, comprehensive abortion care, and support services. This empowerment not only benefits individual women but also contributes to their economic resilience and advancement of their rights.

“RISE-Ghana joins the rest of the world to salute midwives across the globe and particular those working under difficult conditions to deliver much needed quality services to mothers and babies,” he said.

The 2024 International Day of the Midwife (IDM) was celebrated under the theme “Midwives: A Vital Climate Solution.”

Annually observed on 5 May, the IDM was established in 1992 by the International Confederation of Midwives to honor and bring attention to the vital role of midwives worldwide.

Mr. Kariama emphasized that this year’s theme is particularly timely, given the significant health challenges posed by climate change. He noted the increasing frequency of heatwaves and natural disasters, which disproportionately affect women and babies.

I had no idea I was a royal during my childhood – Asantehene

At the celebration of his 74th birthday Thanksgiving on Monday, May 6, 2024, the King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, revealed that he was not immediately introduced to royalty upon his birth.

He explained that his uncle, who was then the King of the Ashanti Kingdom, sent him to stay with a relative far away from the palace.

Additionally, despite gaining admission to Prempeh College, his uncle insisted he attend Sefwi Wiaso, where he could be closely supervised by a disciplinarian.

Reflecting on his childhood, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II recounted being under the watchful eye of a disciplinarian until he ascended to the throne of the Ashanti Kingdom. He acknowledged his uncle’s foresight in recognizing something unique in him.

“My mother wanted to leave my father even before I was born but my Uncle insisted on her staying because he needed a boy. After giving birth to me, my mother insisted on leaving and it was okayed by her family. When I was born, my Uncle ensured that I left the Palace and stayed with a relative. Until recently, I thought this relative was my big brother.

My mother used to visit us just like she was visiting her brother and nothing else. Sometimes, the King of the Ashanti Kingdom came to visit us and I will be serving him but I didn’t know I was royalty. Even when I got admission to Prempeh College, I wasn’t allowed to go. The Minority in Parliament has announced its intention to request a value-for-money report on the $240 million allocated for the 13th African Games held in Accra when the house reconvenes.

The Caucus recently voiced concerns over the event’s poor organization, lack of clear policies for tourism promotion and trade facilitation, and the absence of economic viability strategies, despite the significant amount spent.

In an interview with Citi News, the Ranking Member on the Youth and Sports Committee, Kobena Mensah Woyome, stated that the value-for-money report would reveal the precise costs associated with the continental event.

“As I speak to you today, we haven’t received it [the value for money report]. So why haven’t we received it [the Value for Money report]? And not that we have not been asking. We have been requesting [for it] at meetings but we are yet to receive it.

“The experts in the industry and the engineers in the industry are calling and saying that looking at how much money we used for this ABCD, per their professional calculation, they think they are not just the best.

“So we have to do something more scientific. So we are working on looking at the infrastructure, how much money we used and so if they have the value for money report, then they should make it available for us.”

Be bold and tell Ghanaians there is no appetite to investigate, prosecute Cecilia Dapaah – OSP tells EOCO

Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Samuel Appiah Darko, has called out the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for what he believes is a deliberate attempt not to investigate former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah, accused of corruption-related activities.

During her address to the media at the 14th Commonwealth Regional Conference of Heads of Anti-corruption Agencies in Africa on Monday, Executive Director of EOCO, Maame Yaa Tiwa Addo-Danquah, revealed that her organization plans to return the docket against Mrs Cecilia Dapaah to the OSP as there is nothing further they can do with it.

“If you read the A-G’s advice, whatever that we would have done had already been directed at the police CID. And like he said this morning, when you investigate a case and you do not find anything, we should be bold enough to come and tell the public that for this case, even though I suspected this at the day, that wasn’t what came out; we should be bold to tell Ghanaians.”

Samuel Appiah Darko revealed that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has already returned the docket concerning former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.

In an interview on Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Mr. Darko refuted allegations that the docket forwarded to EOCO was without merit, asserting that EOCO’s actions demonstrate a lack of interest in investigating the matter and an attempt to shift blame onto the OSP.

“Let me start with what EOCO said yesterday [Monday, May 6] that they were going to return the docket to the OSP, that is not accurate. They have long returned the docket to us with an explanation that they have been advised by the AG [Attorney General] not to investigate but remember, we did not say to prosecute, [to] investigate and so I don’t understand why EOCO will say they are now going to return the docket to OSP.”

He noted that should EOCO be unwilling to investigate the matter, it should make that known to the public instead of pointing fingers at the OSP.

“The second point I want to make is this whole idea that the docket that the OSP sent to EOCO was baseless and if you will indulge me, I am going to be a bit detailed, although we are not supposed to do this but our point is that if there is no appetite to want to investigate and prosecute, tell the people of Ghana that there is no appetite but don’t try to put the blame on the OSP.”

The New Force has unveiled its virtual crowdfunding platform, named the “Save Ghana Fund.”

In a video message released on May 6th as part of the launch, the leader of The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, called on the people of Ghana to support the movement and its cause.

Mr Bediako’s message urges the nation to break away from the culture of political candidates buying votes, highlighting how this practice undermines the genuine and free choice of voters and distorts the true aspirations and investments of the people.

“A call to you and to everyone who cares about the future of Ghana: The New Force movement seeks to ensure our commitment to the nation and to each other in the pursuit of equality, empowerment, and equity for all in our society. Nana Kwame Bediako urged the citizens of Ghana to change the narrative by finding redemption in the initiative to identify a genuine leader and then invest in their chosen leader by donating to the movement and its cause.

“The responsibility of the leader is to serve you,” Nana Kwame Bediako candidly tells his audience at the launch of the virtual crowdfunding platform.

‘Dumsor’ forces EC to secure generators for limited voter registration exercise

Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has assured the public of a smooth limited voter registration exercise scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, 2024, across the nation despite the power crisis.

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, disclosed these plans during a press briefing on Monday, May 6, 2024.

To mitigate potential disruptions due to power challenges, commonly known as “dumsor,” the EC has secured generators for all district offices. These generators will ensure continuous voter registration services in case of power outages.

Ms. Mensa explained that the commission is taking every precaution to avoid any interruptions. However, in unforeseen circumstances, the EC has a contingency plan. Its offices will switch to an “offline” mode, registering voters manually and storing their details on a pen drive.

“We are trying hard to, we’ve made arrangements to ensure that we don’t have challenges because of dumsor. What we’ve done is to have all our district offices rent generators so that in the event where there’s dumsor, that can kick in.

“However, should there be the unexpected, we would switch on to the offline and by offline it means the voters will be registered and their details will be put on a pen drive and that will be copied in our offices when the light returns, so the registration will not be disrupted.”

The upcoming limited voter registration exercise targets approximately 623,000 first-time voters nationwide.

Registration will occur in all 258 district offices of the commission, along with an additional 785 centers to assist those facing accessibility challenges.

Furthermore, 25 public universities have been designated as registration venues.

Man United bow head in shame after conceding 4 goals to Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace secured their first league double over Manchester United with a commanding 4-0 victory at Selhurst Park.

Michael Olise opened the scoring after 13 minutes, running 20 yards unchallenged before slotting the ball past Andre Onana. Jean-Philippe Mateta doubled Palace’s lead with a powerful finish, his sixth consecutive goal at home.

Tyrick Mitchell added a third for Palace, tapping in from close range following a fine cross from Adam Wharton. Olise scored his second of the night, capitalizing on a Casemiro mistake to score a superb strike.

From the outset, Oliver Glasner’s team displayed a strong intent against a lackluster United side. United’s defensive performance was one of their worst this season, with Casemiro and Johnny Evans forming their 14th center-back partnership of the campaign.

    https://twitter.com/_MCFC_JOE/status/1787730330033573944

Eberechi Eze and Olise controlled the midfield, causing United numerous problems. Despite a couple of threatening moments from United, including two disallowed goals from Casemiro, Palace dominated the game.

Odsonne Edouard almost extended Palace’s lead in injury time, hitting the post with his effort.

United’s hopes of European football are dwindling, with Europa Conference League football now the most realistic target. They must either finish seventh in the Premier League or win the FA Cup to secure European qualification.

United’s recent form, with just one win in seven matches, has seen them slide down to eighth in the table. Their next fixture against league leaders Arsenal presents another tough challenge for Erik ten Hag’s side.

The defeat and performance at Selhurst Park will be particularly disappointing for United fans, as the players appeared disinterested and lacked motivation throughout the match.

“It is about solving problems, and I am a problem-solver, as evidenced in my work at the Central Bank and as Vice-President,” he emphasised saying “I am ready to lead with integrity, humility, and vision, and I am confident that together, we can build a brighter future for Ghana.”

Reflecting on his political journey, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that while he had never envisioned becoming a politician despite being exposed to politics in his childhood, destiny had a way of leading him down new paths.

He recounted his surprise when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo approached him to be his running mate, a decision he had to make while serving as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

Dr. Bawumia described this as a tough decision, as it meant leaving behind his career for the unpredictable world of politics.

“I realised that it was a God-sent opportunity to make a difference in Ghana, and to contribute to the development of our country at the highest levels. I was inspired by the vision and philosophy of the President and my inherent capabilities as a problem-solver. I knew I had something great to offer in support of the vision of the President and the NPP for Mother Ghana,” Dr Bawumia indicated.

When asked about his selection as running mate for four consecutive elections, from 2008 to 2020, the NPP flag bearer suggested that President Akufo-Addo may have been seeking a Vice-Presidential candidate who was well-suited for the role and possessed the necessary capabilities to be a strong complement.

He noted that the selection of a running mate could be considered from various perspectives, including trust, loyalty, competence, hard work, compatibility, and other virtues.

He said, “President Akufo-Addo had been vindicated in selecting me a record four times because of my contribution to our victory in 2016 and 2020 and my widely acknowledged performance as the best Vice-President in the history of the country.”

Tenants’ Union fights private sector partnership in Saglemi Housing project

The National Tenants’ Union of Ghana is gearing up for legal action and a series of protests to oppose the involvement of the private sector in finalizing the Saglemi Housing Project.

In a press release signed by its secretary-general, Frederick Opoku, the Union argues that such involvement will jeopardize efforts to provide affordable housing for those unable to afford current market rates.

The Ministry of Works and Housing officially solicited private proposals for the completion and operationalization of the project on April 17, 2024.

The deadline for proposal submission and evaluation is set from July 9 to 15, 2024.

Expressing their discontent, the Union urged the government to reconsider its decision. They warned that if their plea is disregarded, they would organize nationwide protests, adopting a ‘one region, one demo’ approach to amplify their dissatisfaction.

Below is the full press release.

PRIVATIZATION OF SAGLEMI AFFORDABLE HOUSING : A SIGN OF FAILURE

The National Tenants’ Union of Ghana expresses profound dismay and disbelief at the decision made by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government to transfer control of the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project to a private investor in an eleventh-hour attempt to secure $100 million for its completion, with just eight months remaining in their tenure.

This epitomizes the recurring failure of housing and unmet promises by successive governments since the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1992, leaving Ghana’s housing deficit at an alarming 1.8 million housing units.

Our opposition to the privatization of the Saglemi Housing Project stems from the following reasons:

    1. Contrary to the government’s purported commitment to poverty alleviation and empowering the impoverished, this decision veers sharply away from such objectives.

    2. By privatizing the project, the government undermines any hope of providing genuinely affordable housing for those unable to afford market rate.

We implore the Akuffo-Addo-led administration to reconsider its decision to hand over the 1,506 housing units to a private entity. Instead, we advocate for future governments to explore alternative strategies that prioritize the public good and taxpayers’ interest, especially, considering the $200,000,000 initially secured by the NDC government for the project’s inception.

In our unwavering commitment to upholding fiscal responsibility and democratic principles, we will utilize all constitutional means to voice our dissent against the government’s ill-advised move to privatize the Saglemi Housing project. The Union pledges active engagement in electoral processes to ensure housing issues feature prominently on political agendas.

Should our pleas fall on deaf ears, we are prepared to mobilize nationwide demonstration, adopting a ‘one region, one demo’ approach to amplify our discontent.

    Thank you.

He emphasized that this campaign would involve extensive engagement with voters through rallies, town hall meetings, and door-to-door interactions to effectively communicate the party’s achievements and vision for the future.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia noted that the NPP is enhancing its organizational structure by enlisting volunteers and providing training to party agents to ensure efficient voter turnout and monitoring on election day.

While acknowledging that the response to his message had been overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic, the NPP flagbearer said “We have been heartened by the warm reception and support from people from all walks of life who are eager to help us win the election.”

Dr. Bawumia elaborated that the NPP has actively engaged with citizens from diverse backgrounds, listening to their concerns and sharing its plans for inclusive growth, job creation, and social development through various channels.

Although the official campaign is yet to commence, he found the energy and momentum from these initial engagements inspiring. Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence in the collective ability to build a brighter future for all Ghanaians.

He acknowledged that Ghana’s political landscape can be highly partisan, marked by robust debates and disagreements between parties. However, he stressed the importance of recognizing that, despite these differences, there is a shared goal of progressing and prospering Ghana and its people.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need to approach political disagreements with respect and a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue. He noted that while there may be differing views on economic policies, governance approaches, or social issues, it is crucial to address these differences through respectful and constructive means.

“Finding common ground is crucial for effective governance and national development. There are many areas where parties can collaborate and work together for the greater good such as infrastructure, good governance, fighting corruption, education and health.

“By focusing on areas of common ground and fostering a spirit of cooperation, parties can overcome political differences and work together to address the challenges facing Ghana,” the Vice-President emphasized and said “Ultimately our shared commitment to the well-being of the nation should transcend partisan divides.”

He highlighted that the NPP’s emphasis on education, such as the implementation of free education up to the secondary level and investments in vocational and technical training, has struck a chord with voters.

Moreover, he pointed out that the government’s dedication to infrastructure development, including road construction and rural electrification projects, has tackled long-standing deficits and enhanced the quality of life for numerous Ghanaians.

The Vice President called on all Ghanaians to strive towards a peaceful election and said, “let us build a progressive society of possibilities, enterprise, compassion, open opportunities, and shared prosperity for every Ghanaian, knowing that our collective efforts will pave the way for a brighter tomorrow.”

Limited voter registration exercise begins today

The Electoral Commission (EC) begins the limited voter registration for individuals venturing into voting for the first time and those aspiring to obtain a voter card today.

This 21-day endeavor will conclude on May 27, 2024. Madam Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the EC, underscores that the objective of this exercise is to register an estimated 623,000 first-time voters nationwide.

“The registration will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. And that gives us the figure of 623,000 that we have put there. That is not to say that we cannot go beyond that. We did mention that in 2023, we projected 700,000 people to visit our registration centres.”

Jean Mensa further said the commission has arranged for all district offices to rent generators in case of power outages, these generators will kick in to ensure continuous voter registration services.

She explained that its offices will switch to an “offline” mode, where voters will be registered manually, and their details will be stored on a pen drive if the generators fail.

“We are trying hard to, we’ve made arrangements to ensure that we don’t have challenges because of dumsor. What we’ve done is to have all our district offices rent generators so that in the event where there’s dumsor, that can kick in.

“However, should there be the unexpected, we would switch on to the offline and by offline it means the voters will be registered and their details will be put on a pen drive that will be copied in our offices when the light returns, so the registration will not be disrupted.”

  • I initially wanted to break world record for running 100 metres in high heels – Afua Asantewaa

I initially wanted to break world record for running 100 metres in high heels – Afua Asantewaa

Afua Asantewaa Aduonum has once again made remarks about her previous attempt to break a Guinness World Record.

Asantewaa failed at her Guinness World Record attempt for the longest singing marathon. According to Asantewaa, she had other record ideas before choosing the sing-a-thon.

In an interview on the Okukuseku Talk show, Asantewaa said she had wanted to attempt to break the record for the fastest 100 metres run in heels by a woman but was advised against it by her husband.

Afua Asantewaa said she instead chose the sing-a-thon because it was a way for her to link her personal goal of achieving the record to the national goal of spreading Ghanaian music globally.

“I initially wanted to try the fastest 100 metres run in heels by a woman. That was my first choice. But my husband advised me against it. He said I should go for something I was passionate about and would not give up easily.

“I’m a very passionate person and I love music, so I decided to go for the longest singing marathon. I also wanted to promote Ghanaian music and make it more popular, like the Nigerians have done.

“That was my motivation, to link my action to a national goal, which is to put Ghana music on the global stage and make it enjoyable and attractive for every Ghanaian,” she said.

The current record for fastest 100 metres in high heels (female) is 13.557 seconds, achieved by Majken Sichlau (Denmark) during the Tarnby Games 2015 at Tarnby Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2 May 2015.

Asantewaa has expressed her gratitude for the public support during her attempt to break the sing-a-thon record.

“It was a concert that brought the society together and united. I’m glad if it has inspired others to try other records,” she said.

  • Docket on Cecilia Dapaah to be returned to OSP over lack of evidence – EOCO

Docket on Cecilia Dapaah to be returned to OSP over lack of evidence – EOCO

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has announced its intention to return the docket concerning former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

This decision comes after the Office of the Attorney General advised against initiating money laundering investigations into Cecilia Dapaah. The Attorney General’s office cited the OSP’s failure to establish evidence of corruption or corruption-related offences as the reason for its advice.

Speaking at the 14th Commonwealth Regional Conference of Heads of Anti-corruption Agencies in Africa, Executive Director of EOCO, Maame Yaa Tiwa Addo-Danquah, reiterated that there was nothing her office could do in the absence of evidence supporting such investigations.

“If you read the A-G’s advice, whatever that we would have done had already been directed at the police CID. And like he said this morning, when you investigate a case and you do not find anything, we should be bold enough to come and tell the public that for this case, even though I suspected this at the day, that wasn’t what came out; we should be bold the Ghanaian.

“So, we cannot continue to be fishing like you don’t even know what you are looking for. You just go about looking for something that you know that you are not even sure.

“So, what I am going to do is that with the A-G’s advice, I will send the docket that we received from the OSP to him that there is nothing in it,” she stated.

On May 1, the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice advised against conducting money laundering investigations into the activities of former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).

The Attorney General’s office determined that the request made by the Special Prosecutor’s office to EOCO to initiate money laundering investigations into Cecilia Dapaah’s affairs lacked a valid basis.

Dumsor ‘saves the day’ at Amasaman after electricity pole falls on car during downpour

During a heavy downpour in Amasaman, Greater Accra Region, a high voltage distribution pole fell on a newly acquired Mercedes-Benz while it was in motion.

Fortunately, there were no casualties as the area was experiencing “dumsor” (intermittent power outages) at the time, saving the occupants from harm.

The incident occurred as a result of the intense rains and strong winds that hit the area, causing several trees to split and leading to damage to cars parked nearby.

This adds to a series of weather-related incidents in the region, including one where a tree fell on a motorcycle and a 4-wheel drive, leaving one person in critical condition.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) issued weather warnings for the southern part of the country, predicting that the rainstorm originating from southern Togo will move westward, affecting areas in southern Ghana.

The weather brought thunderstorms or rain of varying intensities, along with increased cloud cover. Moderate to strong winds may also accompany the rainstorm in some areas.

  • “How many coup leaders have we trained in Niger, Ghana” comment by US official sparks concern on social media

“How many coup leaders have we trained in Niger, Ghana” comment by US official sparks concern on social media

There is a frenzy on the X platform over a video where a US Congressman makes mention of African countries where the US is training some coup leaders.

The video in circulation shows two major US officials being probed over the safety of US soldiers in Niger. Last month, US troops left neighbouring Niger after being ordered out by the country’s junta.

To assure the congressman that all will be done to protect the US army in Niger, one of the officials, Hon. Wormuth, says she will get in touch with General Michael Langley, the head of the US Africa Command.

This did not sit well with the congressman, who then remarked, “I have talked to General Langley. He comes in here and never has any good answers. I asked him for information about how many coup leaders we had trained including Niger, Ghana, Mali and Ivory Coast and he didn’t even produce his report on time.”

His comment, interpreted as the US training individuals who embark on coup d’etats by netizens on social media, has drawn concerns from Ghanaians.

“It wasn’t a slip of tongue. The US has always been behind all the coups and government overthrows across the world. The US is a criminal state. Africa must unite and remove all these US bases from its land. Shameless criminals. Glory to Russia and Mr Putin,” a user wrote on X.

Another wrote, “This is not a slip of tongue. It happened 2 weeks ago. Included is the transcript of the exchange. The IMA train & Equip program is no joke. It literally means train and equip men to undertake a coup.”

The US is still engaged with Niger and Chad, despite withdrawing troops from the countries, the head of the US Africa Command has told the BBC.

US troops left Chad after the country’s military leaders raised concerns over their presence ahead of the 6 May elections.

Gen Michael Langley told the BBC it was a “temporary repositioning” of troops.

Russian military instructors have arrived in Niger as part of a new agreement with the military leaders.

Several other military-led countries in the Sahel region have also recently strengthened ties with Russia and cut them with France, the former colonial power, as they try to fight an Islamist insurgency in the region.

The Sahel region is considered the new global epicentre of the Islamic State group. Gen Langley said that violent extremist organisations were the biggest threat to Africa’s stability.

EC sabotaging 2024 elections by removing over 50,000 2023 Limited Voter Registrants from voters’ register – Suhuyini alleges

Tamale North Member of Parliament, Alhassan Suhuyini, has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of attempting to suppress votes as part of a scheme to rig the 2024 December 7 elections.

Mr. Suhuyini claims that the EC suppressed around 50,000 votes, roughly 250 votes per constituency. He expressed these concerns on his social media pages, urging political parties to stay vigilant and challenge the EC’s alleged move.

He criticized the EC for not conducting last year’s limited voter registration exercise across all polling centers, opting instead for registration only at its district offices.

He argued that this decision prevented many potential registrants from participating, ultimately disenfranchising them for the upcoming December 2024 general elections.

Mr. Suhuyini‘s accusation comes amidst growing tension surrounding the fairness and transparency of the electoral process. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that all eligible voters have the opportunity to register and cast their votes without hindrance or suppression.

He called on political parties to safeguard the democratic process and ensure that every vote counts, viewing the EC’s alleged actions as a threat to the integrity of the electoral system. He called for collective action to address these concerns.

“Among others, the Electoral Commission is working to suppress votes as part of its misguided aim of rigging the December polls. The EC will start a limited registration exercise tomorrow, 7th May, 2024.”

“Last September 2023, after many years of no registration, they conducted a similar exercise. For the first time the registration was conducted at their District Offices across the country, instead of electoral areas and polling stations as it then was.”

“Despite the difficulties, potential voters traveled longer, sometimes uncomfortable distances and sometimes slept in the open for days before their data got captured and in most cases the political parties at high cost facilitated and helped to ease the burdens of these potential voters,” an excerpt of his post said.

  • You collaborated with the FBI, what were the findings? – Sammy Gyamfi asks OSP over Cecilia Dapaah case

You collaborated with the FBI, what were the findings? – Sammy Gyamfi asks OSP over Cecilia Dapaah case

The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has expressed disappointment with Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng over the handling of the case involving former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

Mr. Gyamfi criticized the decision to refer the case to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) for investigation, stating that the OSP should have conducted its probe into the money laundering allegations against Cecilia Dapaah.

In an interview with TV3, Mr. Gyamfi questioned the OSP’s decision not to include their report findings with the FBI in the docket presented to EOCO, calling it a “missing link” in the investigation.

“Kissi Agyebeng announced that a search was being conducted but he couldn’t make the findings public. In referring Cecilia Dapaah to EOCO he should have at least added the findings that he made through that search. He even told us he collaborated with the FBI, what were his findings? That is a missing link,” he stated.

Sammy Gyamfi accused the government of attempting to cover up the truth and avoid a thorough investigation into the allegations against Cecilia Dapaah.

“There is a grand conspiracy by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia NPP government to cover up the truths and real facts of this Cecilia Dapaah case. This should be obvious to any objective bystander,”

“This government led by the President himself has acted in ways that show they are not interested in an investigation at all and you see if they think that they are helping Madam Cecilia Dapaah in doing so, then they’re mistaken,” the communication officer stated.

The Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, stated in a letter addressed to EOCO dated Thursday, April 25, that there is no basis for EOCO to investigate Cecilia Dapaah.

According to the AG, the OSP failed to attach their report findings with the FBI to the docket presented to EOCO after probing into the financial transactions of the former minister.
