Your gov’t destroyed a woman’s business because you thought she was NDC, stop preaching – Bridget Otoo slams Gabby

Popular Ghanaian media personality, Bridget Otoo, has responded to Gabby Otchere-Darko’s call for the depoliticization of businesses, highlighting the challenges faced by some entrepreneurs due to political affiliations.

In a post on X dated May 5, Gabby Otchere-Darko expressed his desire for a future where business people are not associated with political affiliations.

He emphasized the importance of treating business people as individuals focused on success and job creation, rather than labeling them based on their political connections.

But in a tweet, Mrs Otoo recounted the story of a woman at the free zones area whose business was allegedly collapsed because she was suspected to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Mrs Otoo, all the stock the woman had produced was left in store, and the government reportedly hired a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reproduce the same material, providing financial support for the purchase of machines.

Mrs Otoo’s tweet suggests that despite the woman’s efforts to seek redress, including visiting the vice president, the decision was not reversed.

She concluded by expressing skepticism about the sincerity of Otchere-Darko’s call for businesses to be treated without political bias, especially in light of such incidents.

Asantehene turns 74 years old today

Today, the Asantehene marks his 74th birthday, a significant occasion as it coincides with the silver jubilee of his enthronement.

As part of the silver jubilee program, a mini durbar will be held for the Asantehene to receive visitors.

He attended a thanksgiving service at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Cathedral in Fante New Town, Kumasi, in the morning. In attendance was Gã Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, among others.

Later in the evening, a birthday dinner, strictly by invitation, will take place at the Manhyia Palace.

  • Local assembly companies can produce over 140,000 vehicles annually – Volkswagen Ghana CEO

Local assembly companies can produce over 140,000 vehicles annually – Volkswagen Ghana CEO

Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen Ghana, Jeffery Peprah, has highlighted the six local vehicle assembly companies’ competency to supply the country’s vehicle needs.

He noted that a total of 120,000 vehicles were imported into the country.

Out of this figure, 6,000 were new vehicles, he said during an interview on Citi FM.

The six automobile assemblers registered under the Ghana Automotive Development Programme (GADP), including Volkswagen, Toyota, Rana Motors, Sinotruck, Japan Motors, and Kantanka, have urged the government to limit the importation of second-hand vehicles to boost the local industry.

“Out of the new 6,000, 4,700 were assembled locally and this is coming from six different automobile assembling companies,” Jeffery Peprah said.

According to him, the local vehicle assembly companies have 140,000 to 141,000 units that can be produced locally.

Mr. Peprah defended the pricing of locally assembled vehicles, stating that the price reflects the value of each purchase. He outlined several benefits that buyers of locally assembled vehicles would enjoy compared to purchasing imported second-hand vehicles.

“Looking at the pricing perspective at the moment, our new vehicles locally assembled are very competitive and as well as the things that come with them, especially you have a vehicle locally made with a five-year warrant, which is a very potential thing for the market here. Buyers have a warrant for servicing for five years and that is a big plus for the buyers”.

Mr. Peprah stated that implementing some restrictions on imports would incentivize local companies to expand their production capacities.

“If we are able to have a locally assembled product and with our capacities growing and once we have the numbers too growing, we will quickly move into more production phase where we will manufacture more products,” he added.

  • EC deploys logistics to be used for 21-day voter registration exercise

EC deploys logistics to be used for 21-day voter registration exercise

The Electoral Commission (EC) has deployed Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits and other logistical support to its regional and district offices in preparation for the voter registration exercise scheduled to commence tomorrow.

Included in the deployed logistics are Turbonet devices, Registration Forms 1A and 1C, and laminators.

The Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa, disclosed in an exclusive interview with the Daily Graphic that a total of 3,277 personnel had been engaged for the 21-day exercise, which will conclude on May 27, 2024.

The registration will be conducted in all 268 district offices of the EC, including Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) in the Guan Constituency in the Oti Region.

The registration, scheduled from May 7 to May 27, 2024, is the EC’s regular voters’ registration exercise for the year, ahead of the December 7 polls.

Mrs. Mensa stated that 775 registration centers would be opened in distant and riverine areas that are not close to the district offices, with mobile registration teams deployed to handle those communities.

Registration centers will also be set up in 25 public universities, but none will be opened in senior high schools (SHS).

Mrs. Mensa provided a breakdown of the personnel, including 496 supervisors, 831 registration officers, 831 data entry clerks, technicians, and laminators. For the mobile registration teams, 228 registration supervisors, 228 registration officers, 228 data entry clerks, and 228 laminators have been engaged.

For the 25 public universities where registration will also take place, 25 registration officers, 25 data entry clerks, and 25 laminators will be involved in the exercise.

The EC anticipates registering approximately 623,000 new applicants. Mrs. Mensa noted that political parties, through the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), were informed ahead of the schedule, based on which IPAC recommended the increase in the number of registration centers after extensive discussions.

She mentioned that extensive training had been conducted for both permanent and non-permanent staff to meet expectations.

Technicians have been trained for each district to troubleshoot and fix any challenges that may arise with the BVR kits. Additionally, each district has been provided with enough backup BVR kits to replace any equipment that might break down.

Mrs. Mensa called on all citizens to exercise their civic responsibility not only to register but also to ensure that minors and foreigners do not register to vote on December 7, 2024, and beyond. She appealed to all stakeholders to cooperate with the officials to ensure a successful exercise.

According to its calendar of activities, the EC plans to submit the provisional voters register to the political parties between July 9 and 18, 2024, and mount an exhibition of the voters’ register between July 15 and 24, 2024.

The final voters’ register is expected to be submitted to the political parties between August 30 and September 5, 2024.

  • We didn’t clear Cecilia Dapaah of corruption-related offences – OSP

We didn’t clear Cecilia Dapaah of corruption-related offences – OSP

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has refuted claims that it cleared former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah, before transferring her case to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).

The OSP investigated Mrs Dapaah for alleged corruption and corruption-related offences after reports emerged that their domestic staff stole millions of local and foreign currencies, along with other personal effects belonging to the former minister and her husband.

After months of investigation, the OSP closed its case and handed it over to EOCO, citing that the offence largely fell within the realm of money laundering.

The OSP stated that it may reopen the case if further evidence supporting corruption investigations is uncovered.

However, EOCO sent the OSP’s transferred docket to the Attorney General’s office for advice on whether to conduct investigations. The AG’s Office advised EOCO to halt investigations, stating that the file lacked an investigative report and additional documentation to support a money laundering prosecution.

The AG also mentioned that the police are investigating the source of funding by Cecilia Dapaah, suggesting that there was no need for EOCO to continue with the case.

In a separate statement, the Attorney General’s office accused the OSP of failing to provide EOCO with sufficient information regarding its collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) for further investigations.

In an interview with Joy News, the Director for Strategy, Research, and Communications at the OSP, Mr. Samuel Appiah Darko, clarified that his office did not clear Cecilia Dapaah of corruption-related offences.

He explained that the OSP closed its investigation after determining that the offence was largely related to money laundering.

Mr. Darko also noted that Dapaah could not reasonably explain all the seized monies from her home, as her explanations were found to be untrue after investigations.

He maintained that EOCO did not request the FBI investigation report, despite joint representatives from the two agencies working on the file transfer.

“We want to make it very clear that EOCO did not request for the FBI report. Even if they did, the FBI report has a lot of confidentiality clauses that were directed particularly to the OSP and you can’t just give it to another agency because you have transferred the case. There ought to be a lot of inter-agency collaboration and clearance. So if it had happened, we may have triggered the clearance clauses so that either we are cleared by FBI or FBI sends the report directly to EOCO.”

He stated that the OSP referred the case to EOCO, providing all relevant documentation, including caution statements from over 20 suspects in America, Accra, and Kumasi.

Additionally, other information, such as relatives of Madam Dapaah claiming the seized monies and some jewelry in her house were family heirlooms, was also provided. These documents were intended to assist EOCO in conducting its own independent investigation into the financial transactions involved.

“The OSP should be considered as a whistleblower to EOCO. So as a whistle-blower, we gave EOCO platinum information. Ordinarily, you will not even find other agencies giving such information to EOCO,” Mr. Darko noted in the interview.

The OSP’s Director for Strategy, Research, and Communications gave further reasons on why his outfit referred the case to EOCO instead of proceeding with the alleged money laundering probe.

“Our referral is not just in respect of a transaction in America. Also, we were not conducting money laundering investigation, we were conducting corruption investigation. We are of the opinion that, we had all it takes to send that referral to EOCO because there was no way we could have proceeded and then investigated and write a report on money laundering and send it to EOCO for onward transfer to the Attorney General. We only referred a matter to EOCO as whistle-blowers for EOCO to investigate…We cannot instruct EOCO on what they should do,” he added.

Businesses should not be painted with party political brush – Gabby Otchere-Darko

Gabby Otchere-Darko, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his desire for a future where business people are not associated with political affiliations.

He emphasized the importance of treating business people as individuals focused on success and job creation, rather than labeling them based on their political connections.

In a recent statement, Otchere-Darko highlighted the negative impact of tagging business people with political affiliations, stating that it hinders growth and development in Africa.

He called for a shift towards recognizing business people for their contributions to the economy, regardless of their political beliefs.

“I yearn for the day when business people will just be business people. And, will not be treated with party political brush. Not NKP business man or DCP business man. They just want their business to succeed and create jobs. The tagging destroys. It stifles growth in Africa,” he wrote.

Gov’t issued one-week ultimatum to resolve 3 teacher unions’ conditions of service

The leadership of three pre-tertiary teacher unions in the Greater Accra Region has issued a deadline to the government, demanding a resolution to their conditions of service by May 13, 2024.

These unions, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), are dissatisfied with the government’s negotiating approach on issues such as deprived area allowances and adjustments to continuous development allowances.

The Regional Secretary of GNAT, Peter Boateng, emphasized the escalating tensions within the labour sector and urged the government to take prompt action to avoid disruptions.

“If the government is negotiating with the IMF for the second tranche, for us as teacher unions, what we need to get from the government is what we are fighting for our members. The government has got its priority and we the teachers have also got our priorities. Our priority must be set and we are hoping that the government will just heed and approve what our leadership has been demanding.

“As you know, the kind of taxes they take from our salaries is not small and therefore the government can just get the revenue it needs from the teachers and other workers in the country to pay off the other allowances that we are demanding.

“You will realise that from the press conference, we were demanding seventeen different kinds of allowances but we thought it is wise that for the economic hardship that we are all in we have reduced it to four. That is what the officer enumerated for the public to hear. So, for me whatever that the teachers are demanding it’s the right thing,” he stated.

Another heavy rainfall exposes Accra’s filth, poor drainage system

Accra, Ghana’s capital, faced yet another round of flooding following a heavy downpour on Monday morning.

The torrential rain caused severe congestion on roads, leaving many corporate workers, traders, students, and motorists stranded and drenched.

In areas like Pokuase, Achimota, Odawna, Tesano, and Alajo, motorists were forced to pull over along the roadside to seek shelter from the relentless rain.

The heavy traffic led to long queues of vehicles, with some commuters opting to walk to their destinations, dampening the spirit of facing the second week of May.

Unfortunately, it has become commonplace for Accra to be inundated with floods, even after light rainfall.

Adding to the challenge, many individuals have taken advantage of the situation to dump their garbage into the flooded waters, exacerbating the problem.

This recurring issue highlights the inadequate drainage systems in many parts of Accra, which are often clogged with plastics, wrappers, and cans, leading to overflowing rubbish and posing a potential health hazard.

Ghana’s democracy at risk over rising chieftaincy disputes – National Security Minister

Minister for National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, has voiced deep concern over the escalating incidents of chieftaincy disputes and landguard activities, which he views as significant threats to the country’s democratic stability.

Kan-Dapaah’s worry comes in the wake of the tragic death of Lance Corporal Michael Danso during a conflict over land ownership at Millenium City in Gomoa East.

The Minister emphasized that chieftaincy disputes, in particular, present a persistent challenge to internal security and require urgent and decisive action.

Speaking at the 2024 Civil Service Week and 2023 Awards Ceremony in Accra, Kan-Dapaah stressed the need for sustained efforts to effectively address these issues and prevent future occurrences.

“Let me say that chieftaincy disputes, in particular, remain a thorny internal security threat that must be permanently dealt with. It is interesting to note that chieftaincy disputes constitute a significant portion of the daily situational reports that are received by my ministry.

“The potential for such chieftaincy disputes to degenerate into violent confrontations compels us to constantly dedicate considerable amounts of resources to the mitigation of such threats. And these are resources that would have been channelled into other productive sectors of the economy.”

Tensions flared in Akyem Kusi, Akwatia Constituency, Eastern Region, as the District Chief Executive Officer (DCE) of Denkyembour, Seth Birikorang Ofosu, attempted to halt the construction of a funeral ground initiated by Member of Parliament (MP) Henry Boakye Yiadom.

Mr Yiadom, with a team of workers and supporters, began the construction to provide a dedicated space for mourning and remembrance rituals. However, the DCE intervened, citing available funding for other community projects.

To resolve the dispute, a meeting was held between the DCE and Chief of Akyem Kusi, Nana Ntiamoah Kusi Boabum II, a government appointee at the Denkyembour District Assembly.

News of the DCE’s actions angered local youth, who believed their voices were ignored. They confronted the Chief and the DCE, insisting the project should continue, arguing that allocated funds should address unmet community needs.

Elders and leaders supported the youth, recognizing the funeral ground’s cultural importance. They proposed alternative fund allocation to avoid disrupting ongoing projects.

The clash underscores a debate over the DCE’s authority. While the DCE may have valid reasons for redirecting funds, the community emphasizes the importance of local input in decision-making.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet ordered the shutdown of the network for the duration of the Gaza conflict, citing concerns over national security.

Al Jazeera said the move was a “criminal action” and the accusation that the network threatened Israeli security was a “dangerous and ridiculous lie” that put its journalists at risk.

It reserved the right to “pursue every legal step”.

Throughout the war, the network has reported on and criticized Israel’s military operation in Gaza.

“The incitement channel Al Jazeera will be closed in Israel,” Netanyahu posted on social media following a unanimous cabinet vote.

According to a government statement, Israel’s communications minister has signed orders for immediate action. However, at least one lawmaker supporting the closure noted that Al Jazeera could potentially challenge the decision in court.

The statement outlined measures including the closure of Al Jazeera’s offices in Israel, seizure of broadcast equipment, discontinuation of the channel’s transmission through cable and satellite providers, and blocking access to its websites. There was no mention of Al Jazeera’s operations in Gaza.

Israeli satellite and cable television providers suspended Al Jazeera broadcasts following the government decision.

The Qatari government did not provide an official comment, instead deferring to Al Jazeera. Last month, the network accused Israel of a “series of systematic attacks” aimed at silencing Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera claimed that Israel deliberately targeted and killed several of its journalists, including Samer Abu Daqqa and Hamza AlDahdooh, both of whom died in Gaza during the conflict. Israel has denied targeting journalists.

Established in 1996, Al Jazeera is viewed by Qatar as a means to enhance its global profile.

NPP risks losing votes in 2024 elections over abandoned markets in Ashanti Region

Several trader associations in Kumasi have declared their intent to oppose the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 general election if the government does not complete all abandoned markets in the Ashanti Region.

These associations, including the Second-hand Cloth Sellers Association, Santasi Traders Union, Suame Magazine Workers Union, Mamponteng Traders Association, Central Market Traders Association, and the Kumasi Lotto Sellers Association, issued a joint statement on Monday, May 6.

They threatened to organize a five-day protest in collaboration with other affected associations if their demands are not met.

In the meantime, they have requested intervention from Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Ashanti Queen Mother Nana Konadu Yiadom to urge the government to address their concerns.

Additionally, the traders warned that they would take action to remove barricades on the Kejetia Second Phase project if their demands are not addressed promptly.

“We are by this press release urging the Contracta company to remove all the barricades from the Kejetia second phase projects before we do it by ourselves because we will not think twice to take it off to do our businesses there if our demand is not heard.”

Hopeson Adorye, to create ‘Jail Them’ advocacy group to hold corrupt gov’t officials accountable

A former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Director of Special Duties for Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, Hopeson Adorye, has announced his intention to establish an advocacy group called ‘Jail Them’.

The main goal of this group is to urge the next government to hold officials of the current Akufo-Addo-led administration accountable once they leave office on January 7, 2025.

Mr. Adorye has accused some NPP officials of being “extremely corrupt” and of using their positions for personal enrichment.

“When NPP goes into opposition, I will launch ‘Jail Them’ advocacy group to deal with corrupt officials” he said in an interview on Accra FM on Thursday, May 2, 2024.

Mr. Adorye stated that upon the NPP’s exit from power, he plans to submit their dossier to the new government for legal action. He emphasized that his goal is to prevent the looting of the country’s resources by a privileged few.

  • “To attack and kill a soldier without provocation is the depth of insanity” – GJA on Kasoa murder

“To attack and kill a soldier without provocation is the depth of insanity” – GJA on Kasoa murder

President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of a soldier during a land dispute in Millennium City, Kasoa, Central Region.

The soldier, believed to be in his late 30s, was shot dead on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, around 4:20 pm, while two other officers with him managed to escape unharmed.

Police have arrested a suspect, Benlord Ababio, in connection with the shooting.

Speaking at the World Press Freedom Day 2024 commemoration at the Koforidua Technical University on Friday, May 3, Dwumfour described the soldier’s murder as “the depth of insanity”.

“The media have the mandate to uphold the 1992 Constitution and that includes the human rights provisions under Chapter 5 of the Constitution. It is on the basis of such mandate that we totally condemn the recent killing of a soldier at Millennium City near Kasoa over a land dispute.

“To attack and kill a soldier without provocation is the depth of insanity any human being can sink to. Under normal circumstances, the military would have launched a reprisal attack on Millennium City by now, and whenever they did so, they were condemned for violating the rights of innocent people.”

He commended the military for their restraint in response to the murder of their colleague and urged the public to respect security officers and refrain from attacking them.

“While commending the military for exercising restraint in the face of extreme provocation, we call on the Police to investigate the matter as quickly as possible and prosecute the killer. We also appeal to the general public to respect security officers and refrain from attacking them,” he urged.

Mr. Dwumfour also called on Ghanaians to acknowledge and value the efforts of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

“Let me take this occasion to urge all Ghanaians to appreciate officers of the Ghana Armed Forces, who have played an important part in our country’s stability. They also safeguard our country’s territorial integrity, and we must always support them.”

Go back to the days when you campaigned against ‘galamsey’ – GJA tells media

President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has called on journalists to reignite their campaign against illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.

He expressed concern over the waning media focus on galamsey, despite the positive impact of past efforts. Mr. Dwumfour suggested that if authorities had sustained their actions, the state of water bodies could have improved.

Mr. Dwumfour made these remarks during the World Press Freedom Day 2024 commemoration at the Koforidua Technical University on Friday, May 3.

“The GJA seeks to lead a strong media campaign for the protection of the environment and the good of the country. In that regard, we wish to call on the media to resume the concerted campaign against illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as ‘Galamsey’.

“In the past, our collective action in the fight against ‘galamsey’ yielded positive results, as we brought the issues to national attention for action.

“But for the retrogression in action by duty bearers, sanity would have prevailed, and our land and water bodies would have been healed by now. That notwithstanding, withdrawing from our duty, as we have done now, is more harmful to the nation.”

He also urged journalists to focus on other pressing environmental issues, such as sanitation and climate change.

“Apart from ‘galamsey’, the GJA wishes to call on the media to focus on and address other environmental issues such as sanitation and climate change. We will soon announce a comprehensive agenda on these environmental concerns.

He also called on duty bearers to take significant actions to combat deforestation.

“We also urge duty bearers to accept responsibility by taking significant actions to combat this scourge, such as deforestation, which has the potential to devastate our land,” he advised.

Think tanks uncovering use of borrowed funds using forensic ethnography – Bright Simons

In a recent series of posts, Bright Simons, Vice President of IMANI Africa, has highlighted the use of “forensic ethnography” by some Ghanaian think tanks to uncover the use of borrowed funds, particularly the billions of dollars Ghana owes to foreign entities.

The focus is on tracing how these funds were spent, particularly through private companies.

Mr Simons emphasizes that this scrutiny is not motivated by malice or a desire to embarrass anyone, but rather to ensure transparency, especially when private businesses and profits are involved.

He also alludes to the potential future use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning tools to predict and prevent wasteful spending.

Mr Simons’ overarching goal, as he explains, is to increase trust in governance and combat the factors that contribute to mistrust in governance.

  • Minority has failed to prove GRA-SML deal is causing financial loss to the state – Majority

Minority has failed to prove GRA-SML deal is causing financial loss to the state – Majority

The Majority in Parliament has dismissed as unfounded the calls by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the prosecution of individuals allegedly involved in the SML-GRA contract.

Members of the Majority caucus argued that there is inadequate evidence to suggest that any government official is responsible for causing financial loss to the state, making prosecution in the SML-GRA deal unwarranted.

In a statement to the press, the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, stressed that President Akufo-Addo’s decision to conduct a comprehensive review of the contract is in the best interest of the public.

“Now we are aware that our friends in the NDC are calling for certain prosecutions. I think that they have not paid attention to the whole issue and they only want to do politics as usual. Their call is unfounded for the simple reason that there isn’t any established proof of any officer of state causing financial loss to the state.

“Indeed what they think are payments to SML are not payments borne out of the government’s revenue. If you peruse the agreement, SML is paid out of what it generates and they would have to pay attention to the details. They are paid 0.05% per litre of revenue that they generate as a result of the system that they put in place to monitor activities in the petroleum sector.

“And it is instructive to also note that his company opened its doors to the Mines and Energy Committee to inspect and to see the nature of their operations. What I want to urge our colleagues in the opposition is that they should not kill Ghanaian businesses.

“Often under the guise of due diligence and ensuring that there is transparency, we often get out of control and destroy Ghanaian companies, whereas foreign ones who operate in certain sectors get a kind of protection that makes them develop their business but often Ghanaian businesses suffer,” he stated.

The report released by the Communications Director of the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, finds the GRA guilty of failing to obtain approval from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) for contracts with Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML).

According to a report by KPMG, GRA sought approval from PPA three times between June 2017 and September 2017 to engage SML for transaction audit services, but approval was not granted.

Despite this, GRA proceeded to engage SML as a subcontractor to West Blue, eventually taking over services from West Blue when their contract ended in December 2018.

Furthermore, GRA added external price verification to the services offered by SML and signed a downstream petroleum audit agreement with SML, all without PPA approval.

It was not until August 27, 2020, under new leadership at GRA, that PPA ratified the procurement processes used to engage SML. This raises questions about GRA’s adherence to procurement regulations and the oversight of its contracting processes.

Buckets hold rainwater that nearly destroyed comissioning of reconstructed Appiatse community

A downpour on Thursday nearly ruined the commissioning of the newly reconstructed Appiatse community two years after the tragic incident that devastated the community in the Prestea-Huni Valley District of the Western Region.

Vice President Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia was present with some state officials to inaugurate and hand over a 124-unit housing project, marking the official resettlement of residents.

For some minutes, the event came to a halt as the rain poured heavily. The section where the Vice President sat was affected. To ensure the Vice President did not get wet, two buckets were placed to hold the water that poured.

The newly constructed units, ranging from one-bedroom to seven-bedroom apartments, feature upgraded facilities including a market, six-unit classroom and kindergarten blocks, internal roads, water and electricity connections, a drainage system, and a water storage system.

Addressing a gathering of jubilant residents and local chiefs on Thursday, May 2, 2024, Dr Bawumia first paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragedy and offered words of comfort to their families.

He praised the completion of Phase II of the Appiatse Reconstruction Project as a testament to the resilience, compassion, and unwavering spirit of the people of Appiatse and the nation as a whole.

Dr Bawumia also commended President Akufo-Addo for his steadfast dedication to ensuring the resettlement of Appiatse’s residents into modern, spacious, and environmentally sustainable housing, providing them with peace of mind and opportunities for growth.

Detailing the personal contribution of the President and his unalloyed interest in the Appiatse Reconstruction Project, Dr Alhaji Bawumia said, “President Akufo-Addo was the first person to donate to the Appiatse Support Fund, a sign of his compassion and dedication towards the rebuilding of this community.

“In addition to his donation, President Akufo-Addo directed that US$5,000,000.00 out of the US$6,000,000.00 administrative fine imposed on the company at the centre of the explosion be paid to the Appiatse Support Fund to support victims of the incident and the rebuilding of this community. Such a selfless and compassionate gesture.”

Expanding on the efforts of key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources led by Minister Samuel A. Jinapor, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia highlighted that following the incident, the government swiftly implemented measures to alleviate the burden on residents.

This included initiating a resettlement process for the affected residents.

Referring to the Lands Minister as a ‘Bulldozer,’ Dr Bawumia praised his dedication and commitment to the successful completion of the Appiatse project.

He also commended the members of the Appiatse Reconstruction Committee, chaired by former Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources in charge of forestry Benito Owusu Bio, for their efforts.

“We are grateful to all who offered support in our time of need, whether through words of comfort, a listening ear, the provision of a need or a temporary place of abode, or a contribution thereto; but very importantly, to all – both corporate and individual Ghanaians – who, out of the generosity of their hearts, contributed in cash and kind to support the rebuilding of the new Appiatse we commission today. It is my prayer that the Almighty God will, abundantly, replenish whatever you sacrificed. We are, also, grateful to the various committees, the Appiatse Support Fund, the Appiatse Implementation Committee, the experts, consultants, contractors and many others whose selfless dedication has brought us this far.

“To the indefatigable Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, who has led this project from the beginning to date, I say thank you for your exemplary leadership and dedication. Your commitment and relentless zeal in seeing to the completion of this project has been unwavering. This is why I refer to him as the “Bulldozer Minister.” He just gets the work done. I am aware of the several visits you made to this community to assess the progress of work and to ensure that the contractors execute the project on schedule. The people Appiatse are grateful for your services. I count on your dedication to see to the completion of Phase 3 of this consequential project,” he said.

Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia assured the community that the government had implemented various measures to prevent a recurrence of the incident.

He promised continued support to improve their living conditions. Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, commended the residents and chiefs for their collaboration and patience.

He praised Dr. Bawumia for his visionary leadership and support since the incident. He also praised the committee led by Benito Owusu-Bio for their efforts and expressed condolences to those who lost their lives.

Mr Benito Owusu-Bio, Chairperson of the Appiatse Reconstruction, expressed gratitude for the government’s support and excitement about completing the project.

The ceremony, attended by high-ranking officials including Kwabena Okyere Darko and Fatimatu Abubakar, saw Dr. Bawumia break ground for a 70-unit housing project, Phase Three of the Appiatse Reconstruction Project.

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to offer free tertiary education to all individuals with disabilities who gain admission to universities in Ghana.

He made this commitment during an engagement with the clergy in the Western North Region as part of his nationwide tour.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that while scholarships are typically available to individuals from various backgrounds, his administration will give special priority to persons with disabilities.

He stated that the scholarship would encompass both academic and residential fees for all qualifying individuals with disabilities starting in 2025.

“I am very clear on the way forward. I believe that for persons with disabilities, we are going to support them a bit more. We are giving scholarships to every person but I am going to dedicate some of the monies to our scholarship secretariat and the GET Fund to provide free tertiary education; both tuition and accommodation to every person with a disability who makes it into the university so they can all benefit,” he stated.

OSP probes alleged bribery of EC staff by Kwadaso MP

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has launched an investigation into allegations of corruption related to the recent Ejisu by-election, focusing on the Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Professor Kingsley Nyarko, and some Election Commission (EC) temporary staff.

Reports from sources close to the investigation indicate that the OSP has arrested and interrogated several individuals connected to the case.

The probe centers on an incident captured by Adom News cameras, where Professor Kingsley Nyarko was seen handing an envelope to two EC officials at the Church of Pentecost Polling Station in Fumesua during the by-election.

Following the incident, the EC suspended the two officials, Ballot Issuer and Presiding Officer Regina Serwaa and George Sasu, pending criminal investigations into their conduct.

Despite Professor Nyarko’s assertion that the money was given in good faith and not intended as a bribe or to influence the officials, there have been calls for his prosecution. Election Watch Ghana, a civil society organization, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate Dr. Kingsley Nyarko.

However, governance expert Prof. Baffour Agyeman Duah has dismissed these calls for prosecution, suggesting that there may have been no criminal intent behind Professor Nyarko’s actions.

“Frankly, this is much I do about nothing because the response we are getting already tells you where this is going to go.

“Unless the Electoral Commission has direct rules against politicians and others giving lunch to people, I don’t know what they can do about this,” he explained.

  • Ghana is not broke – Energy Minister

Ghana is not broke – Energy Minister

The Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has vehemently refuted claims that Ghana is facing financial difficulties hindering the purchase of essential infrastructure for rural electrification projects.

Responding to concerns raised by committee members in a recent sitting before the Government Assurances Committee about delays in project completion due to alleged budget constraints on Friday, May 3, Dr. Prempeh stated unequivocally, “Ghana is not broke that it cannot buy. My last answer to that question was, we are procuring high-voltage and low-voltage poles and completing the same in Binduri.”

Highlighting the challenges faced in executing rural electrification projects, Dr. Prempeh emphasized the importance of honouring contracts and the difficulties contractors face when prices escalate unexpectedly.

He explained, “If the contractor feels the prices have escalated and if he goes to buy it, he will lose out of the contract, all over the world, what contractors do is to walk away. It doesn’t make it a criminal offense.”

Despite acknowledging funding challenges, the Minister asserted that this does not mean Ghana is broke.

Drawing an analogy, he stated, “The fact that you cannot cater for every need of your family does not mean you are broke. The request may come, and you might decide to prioritize the request, and even when you prioritize and a sickness drops, you might have to divert your prioritization to what has become an emergency. Ghana is not broke.”

He further reassured the committee that the government remains committed to ensuring that every part of Ghana receives its fair share of electrification, noting that the country has achieved an electrification rate of 88.75%, which he described as commendable, even in comparison to other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

  • “If you don’t solve those economic hardships coups are going to happen” – Prof Atuguba to govt

“If you don’t solve those economic hardships coups are going to happen” – Prof Atuguba to govt

The Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, Prof. Raymond Atuguba, has attributed the increasing frequency of coups d’état in West Africa to economic hardships.

He highlighted that some countries in the region have witnessed coups because leaders ignored calls for solutions to address these challenges.

During an appearance on JoyNews AM Show on May 2, Prof. Atuguba noted that coup perpetrators have indicated specific factors that motivated them to seize power and alter the existing order.

“Coup leaders cite five issues consistently as causing the coup. The first is economic hardship. You see why I am talking about the economy a lot and the debt crisis and the outward-oriented economies.

“If you don’t solve those economic hardships coups are going to happen.  Democracy is going to reverse. We are going to live under repressive regimes,” he said.

Prof. Raymond Atuguba also identified the phenomenon of sit-tightism as another factor contributing to the occurrence of coups. He explained that some leaders develop a sense of entitlement and refuse to relinquish power, treating their position as a family possession.

“Sit-tightism is now recognised as a word where a leader sits tied on the seat and refuses to go. That is where Togo comes in. In other words, the situation in Togo is one of the things that ignites coups,” he said.

Prof. Raymond Atuguba also highlighted the closing of democratic spaces as another contributing factor.

He pointed out that in countries such as Ghana, Mali, or Burkina Faso, certain actions by democratic governments can lead to the closure of democratic spaces and sometimes prompt a reaction from the people.

Additionally, he mentioned corruption and violent extremism as factors that exacerbate these issues. He emphasized the need for measures to be taken to address these threats.

“So we need to focus on these five issues. If we want to end the phenomenon of coups. We can’t wish it way. We can’t deal with the five issues by shouting good governance all around the country.

“We have to get to work and address it. The saddest part of it is the evidence appears to be that when a country goes into undemocratic rule or military regime, under a military regime they appear to be doing better economically,” he argued.

  • Ghanaians are happy about return of royal artefacts, but it’s only a loan – BBC reports

Ghanaians are happy about return of royal artefacts, but it’s only a loan – BBC reports

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and other media outlets have reported on the return of looted artefacts from the Asante kingdom in Ghana, 150 years after they were taken by British colonisers.

Ghanaians gathered at the Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, to welcome the 32 items back home.

The BBC emphasized in its report that these artefacts have been loaned to the Asanteman, which is an accurate statement. However, many who saw the report were dissatisfied with the BBC’s coverage.

The artefacts have been loaned to Ghana for three years under an agreement between two British museums, the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) and the British Museum, and the Asante king, not the Ghanaian government.

Although the Asantehene is a symbol of traditional authority, his kingdom is now part of Ghana’s modern democracy.

The V&A is lending 17 pieces, while the British Museum is lending 15.

The return of these artefacts coincides with the silver jubilee celebration of the Asantehene.

Some of the items, including the gold harp (Sankuo), were looted during the Anglo-Ashanti wars of the 19th Century. Other items, like the sword of state, were given to a British diplomat in 1817.

BBC Midnight knife (L) and gold badges (R)The midnight knife (L) was used for covert operations. The gold badges (R) were worn by the king’s soul washers. Credit – BBC.

Among the returned artefacts are the sword of state, gold peace pipe, and gold badges worn by officials charged with cleansing the soul of the king.

The sword of state, also known as the “mpompomsuo sword,” holds great significance for the Asante people, as it is used in swearing the oath of office to the kingdom by paramount chiefs and the king himself.

Royal historian Osei-Bonsu Safo-Kantanka told the BBC that when the items were taken from the Asante, it took away “a portion of our heart, our feeling, our whole being.”

The return of these artefacts is controversial and significant. Under UK law, national museums like the V&A and British Museum are prohibited from permanently returning contested items in their collections. Loan deals like this are seen as a way to allow objects to return to their countries of origin.

Some countries that claim disputed artefacts fear that loans may imply they accept UK ownership. Many Ghanaians believe the ornaments should remain permanently, but this new arrangement is a way to overcome British legal restrictions.

The loan can be extended, but only with the approval of the British culture secretary.

Sika Official was not stabbed – Olele Salvador

Pop-culture journalist, Emmanuel Kwame Sarpong, also known as Olele Salvador, has refuted claims that Ghanaian blogger, Sika Official, has been stabbed.

On Thursday, May 2, it was reported widely on social media that Sika Official had been stabbed by Ernest Kwablah, also known as Quables and co-founder of the Dance With Purpose Academy (DWP Academy), and Curtis of R2Bees.

Hours later, Quables dismissed the allegation levelled against him.

Providing an account of what happened based on intelligence from DTS Intelligence Africa, Olele Salvador first noted that “Curtis wasn’t the alleged ‘stabber’”.

He noted that eyewitnesses say Curtis was rather the mediator in breaking up a fight that allegedly started inside a club and was brought outside, where he was.

A detailed account of how Sika Official got injured by Olele Salvador is as follows:

The said fight started as a non-violent confrontation between Quables and Eli, the former manager of Dancegodlloyd.

It occurred between midnight and 1 am on Thursday and reportedly stemmed from personal attacks Eli made on his social media against Quables, relating to grievances over Dancegodlloyd’s recent departure from DWP. This set the stage for the ensuing events.

The argument escalated and was taken outside, where Curtis, initially outside by himself on a call, stepped in to de-escalate the situation, advising Quables against such “childish” kerfuffles.

The altercation intensified when a friend of Curtis tried to calm down a vociferously complaining Eli, leading to a physical confrontation with Sika Official, who tried to intervene.

The situation escalated further with the involvement of additional parties, leading to a more severe scuffle, during which Sika Official suffered a minor cut, initially unnoticed.

Later, after the fight, two unidentified individuals, linked to the earlier conflict, confronted Sika Official again, reportedly causing some damage to his vehicle.

Sika and his friend changed location and arrived at DSTRCT 24. His friend (Eli) noticed blood stains on his shirt, which took them both to the hospital.

Despite the chaos, it was later clarified at the hospital that Sika Official’s injuries were minor, although he revealed he felt some severe body pains, post-incident.

Miscommunication added to the confusion, Olele Salvador said, with Sika Official at one point mistakenly identifying Curtis as the attacker. However, Curtis has denied any involvement with a knife.

“As of now, all parties involved have submitted their statements to the police, and a formal complaint has been lodged. The matter has reportedly been settled amicably among the parties,” he added.

The Independent Ghana is currently unable to confirm the said account as the parties involved are yet to officially comment on the matter.

Tottenham Hotspur lose to Chelsea by 2-0 at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, boosting their chances for European football next season while dealing a significant blow to their London rivals’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Trevoh Chalobah met Conor Gallagher’s free-kick with a powerful header to put Chelsea in front. Despite a lengthy VAR check for a possible foul in the build-up, the goal stood.

Spurs struggled to create clear chances, with Cristian Romero missing their best opportunity with a headed effort wide of the mark. Chelsea capitalized on their control of the game in the 71st minute, with Cole Palmer’s free-kick hitting the bar and Nicolas Jackson heading in the rebound.

The victory lifted Chelsea to eighth place, just two points behind seventh-placed Newcastle and within reach of a European spot. Meanwhile, Tottenham’s hopes for a top-four finish took a hit as they are now seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa with a game in hand.

The defeat confirmed Liverpool’s place in next season’s Champions League. Despite missing several key players to injury, Chelsea put in a strong performance, with Jackson and Gallagher particularly impressive.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, in his 400th game in English football, had to rely on his starting XI due to the lack of experienced options on the bench. However, his team struggled to find a rhythm and create meaningful chances.

With just two clean sheets in their last 25 Premier League games, Tottenham’s defensive frailties were evident once again. Manager Ange Postecoglou made five changes from their previous game but failed to inspire his side to victory.

The result leaves Tottenham with an uphill battle to secure a Champions League spot, while Chelsea’s European aspirations remain alive and kicking.

After a slow start, Leverkusen took the lead when Alex Grimaldo set up Wirtz for his 18th goal of the season. Andrich then doubled the lead with a long-range strike in the second half.

The win extended Leverkusen’s unbeaten run to 47 matches in all competitions.

In the other semi-final, Marseille and Atalanta drew 1-1 at Stade Velodrome. Gianluca Scamacca put Atalanta ahead early, but Chancel Mbemba equalized with a long-range effort. Both teams had chances to score, leaving the tie open ahead of the second leg in Bergamo.

My primary focus is to make you multi-millionaires – Bawumia tells small-scale miners

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, has expressed his commitment to transforming small-scale miners in Ghana into “millionaires.”

He outlined that his government’s policies would enhance their quality of life and increase their financial standing.

Dr. Bawumia made this pledge during a speech to small-scale miners and youth groups in Tarkwa on the final day of his campaign tour of the Western Region.

He further elaborated that certain mining concessions in Ghana would be reserved for small-scale miners under his administration.

“We will allocate the mining concessions to the small-scale miners. My primary focus is to make many small-scale miners millionaires and multi-millionaires. I want to support our small-scale miners,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia also promised to shift the government’s approach towards small-scale miners by supporting them with the necessary tools to mine legally, instead of pursuing them and seizing their equipment.

“We will formalise the small-scale mining regime and give them a license. Everybody will register with the Small Scale Miners Association with their Ghana card and we will deepen the representation of the Minerals Commission and the EPA, and make sure that the districts that they don’t have representatives, we will give them some,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia announced plans to establish a mining committee in each district, in collaboration with local chiefs, to issue temporary licenses for mining activities.
