GHC940,000, 5 pickups, and 100 strong boys among items Owusu Aduomi demanded from NDC for Ejisu by-election

Recent documents sighted by The Independent Ghana suggest that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is supporting former Ejisu Member of Parliament, Kwame Owusu Aduomi, who is contesting the Ejisu by-election.

Kwame Owusu Aduomi has departed from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to contest as an independent candidate in today’s by-election.

Before the election, the NPP accused Kwame Owusu Aduomi of being affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and receiving support from the party.

In response, Kwame Owusu Aduomi denied the allegation, suggesting that if the NDC supports him, it is likely due to his successful initiatives during his time as a legislator.

But a document shared by former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho suggests that Mr Aduomi is in bed with the NDC.

Ahead of the election, Mr Aduomi is said to have requested a list of items from the NDC to aid his campaign and boost his chances of winning.

The list of items he allegedly demanded, per the document, is as follows.

    • 5 branded pick-ups for the campaign }
    • 50.000 A3 size posters
    • 20,000 A4 size flyers for commercial vehicles
    • cash support for community entry on traditional leaders (GHC 240,000.00)
    • elections day expenditures for polling agents and police (GHC500,000.00)
    • 100 very strong boys to protect me during the campaign and on the election day.
    • 3 giant billboards at vantage areas (optional)

He was, however, reportedly provided the following by the NDC:

    • 3 branded pick-ups. This must be picked from the campaign regional pool and must be returned after the elections
    • 30,000 A3 size posters
    • 20,000 A4-size flyers for commercial vehicles
    • cash support of GHC 500,000.00
    • mobilise 50 boys. pick them from the regional team. Those who are under training for the national general elections. They should be boys who know the Ejisu area very well.

The NDC has not commented on the issue yet.

Recent documents obtained by The Independent Ghana indicate that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is supporting former Ejisu Member of Parliament, Kwame Owusu Aduomi, in the Ejisu by-election.

Kwame Owusu Aduomi has left the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to run as an independent candidate in today’s by-election.

Before the election, the NPP accused Kwame Owusu Aduomi of having ties to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and receiving support from the party.

In response, Kwame Owusu Aduomi refuted the allegation, suggesting that if the NDC supports him, it is likely due to his successful initiatives during his time as a legislator.

However, a document shared by former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, appears to confirm Mr. Aduomi’s association with the NDC.

Ahead of the election, the NDC allegedly provided the following items:

    • 3 branded pick-ups. This must be picked from the campaign regional pool and must be returned after the elections
    • 30,000 A3 size posters
    • 20,000 A4-size flyers for commercial vehicles
    • cash support of GHC 500,000.00
    • mobilise 50 boys. pick them from the regional team. Those who are under training for the national general elections. They should be boys who know the Ejisu area very well.

These items provided are not exactly what Mr Aduomi requested from the NDC to aid his campaign and boost his chances of winning.

The list of items he reportedly demanded, per the document, is as follows:

    • 5 branded pick-ups for the campaign
    • 50,000 A3 size posters
    • 20,000 A4 size flyers for commercial vehicles
    • cash support for community entry on traditional leaders (GHC 240,000.00)
    • elections day expenditures for polling agents and police (GHC500,000.00)
    • 100 very strong boys to protect me during the campaign and on the election day.
    • 3 giant billboards at vantage areas (optional)

Document showing NDC’s support for Owusu Aduomi in Ejisu by-election pops up

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has shared documents that suggest that the opposition party’s support for former Ejisu Member of Parliament, Kwame Owusu Aduomi, who is participating in the Ejisu by-election.

Kwame Owusu Aduomi left the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to run as an independent candidate in the by-election happening today.

Prior to today’s election, the NPP accused Kwame Owusu Aduomi of being an NDC member and also receiving support from the party.

Kwame Owusu Aduomi refuted the allegation and noted that should the NDC support him, it could only mean they are impressed by the initiatives he took while serving as a legislator.

There was no evidence to prove the NPP’s claim until now.

Per the April 18th document shared by Mr Anyidoho with NDC’s logo and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party ordered its constituency leadership to provide the logistical assistance needed to enable him to win the by-election to fortify the party’s strength in the Ashanti Region, known to be the NPP’s stronghold.

“The National Leadership of the National Democratic Congress wishes to officially bring to your attention, our resolve to support Mr. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, the former Member of Parliament of the Ejisu Constituency.

“Our decision is borne out of the series of meetings we have had with Mr. Aduomi on the subject of the NDC throwing our support behind him to run as an Independent Parliamentary Candidate in the upcoming by-election at the Ejisu Constituency.

“The ultimate aim is to see our Party’s strength in the Constituency and the Ashanti Region as a whole. As a former member of parliament for the area, the leadership is aware of his following, hence, partnering with him as our candidate in this election will reduce the fortunes of the NPP and make them unpopular, leading to the 2024 National Elections.

“You are by this letter, mandated to provide Mr. Aduomi all the logistical support he has requested,” portions of the statement read.

Ahead of the by-election to fill the seat left vacant by the late John Kumah, political messaging has intensified as the governing party presents Kwabena Boateng as its candidate.

Mr. Boateng will compete against five other candidates, including Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, who parted ways with the governing party to run independently in the upcoming by-election.

He was reportedly provided 3 branded pickups, 30,000 A3 size posters, 20,000 A4 size flyers for commercial vehicles, cash support of GHC500,000 and 50 boys to aid his campaign.

The NDC is yet to comment on the matter.

  • Mobile money sales boy arrested for allegedly stealing over GHC1 million

Richard Okai, a 26-year-old mobile money salesperson, stands accused of embezzling approximately GH¢ 1,385,910.3.

His case is currently before the Adentan Circuit Court, awaiting guidance from the Attorney General (AG).

Initially arraigned on March 7, 2024, before Judge Angela Attachie, Okai pleaded not guilty to six charges of misappropriating varying sums of money. These charges range from GH¢ 94,596.30 to GH¢ 451,048.60.

During a subsequent hearing on April 23, 2024, before Relief Judge Nana Aba Quaiba Nunoo, the case was adjourned to April 29, 2024, awaiting directives from the AG.

Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, the prosecutor, presented the case, detailing that the complainant, residing in Kissieman near Achimota, Accra, owns a sizable cosmetic shop named Lilyna Enterprise at the Madina Market. Okai, also known as Kobby, works as a salesperson and resides in UN, a suburb of Madina.

Okai’s responsibilities include handling mobile money transactions at Lilyna Enterprise, collecting payments from customers, and depositing them into the company’s merchant account. The prosecutor highlighted that due to the complainant’s trust in Okai, she did not scrutinize his handling of the mobile money transactions.

“On February 20, 2024, at about 10 a.m., some customers were paying through mobile money when Naa Mayley, the complainant’s daughter and a witness in this case, noticed Richard acting suspiciously,” C/Insp Lanyo added.

Naa Mayley confiscated the company’s mobile phone from Richard Okai and discovered that he had transferred GH¢1,697 from the company’s account to his personal mobile money account. She immediately informed her mother, and together they inspected Okai’s phone, uncovering numerous transfers from the company’s account to his own.

Subsequently, they reported the incident to the police, leading to Okai’s arrest. During questioning, he admitted to the crime.

The police obtained a statement from MTN regarding Okai’s accounts, revealing that from December 2022 to February 2023, he had embezzled GH¢159,315.5. From August 2023 to December 2023, the amount rose to GH¢463,489.6, and from January to February 2024, he had stolen GH¢87,098.5. This totaled GH¢709,903.6.

Further investigations revealed that Okai had used some of the stolen money to purchase land in Akatanmaso, Accra. He also deposited GH¢7,000 in his Fidelity Bank account, kept GH¢3,000 in his mobile money account, and spent some money on gambling.

Following the investigation, he was charged with theft and brought before the court.

GHS records 21 new COVID-19 cases

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye, has noted that the country has started recording new cases of the COVID-19 virus.

Engaging the media, Dr Aboagye noted that 21 new cases have been recorded. He noted that although the head of the UN World Health Organization (WHO) in May 2023 declared COVID-19 no longer a global health emergency, the virus remains.

He urged Ghanaians who are not vaccinated to take advantage of the GHS’s upcoming vaccination exercise.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has declared a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination initiative in response to escalating infections across healthcare facilities.

Scheduled from May 4 to May 10, 2024, the campaign aims to curb the surge in cases, particularly in the Greater Accra Region, where the highest numbers have been recorded.

Highlighting the virus’s high transmissibility, the GHS emphasized the criticality of adhering to safety protocols.

Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, Director of Public Health at GHS, underscored the pivotal role of widespread vaccination in containing the spread. He urged all Ghanaians to actively engage in the campaign, as shared during a media briefing.

“We are getting a few cases reported in parts of Accra and a few other regions. And it brings to bear the fact that Ghanaians need to be vaccinated and so on the 4th to the 10th of May, we are going to do a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign and we want to urge all Ghanaians to be part of the exercise.

“We plan to do about four or five before the end of the year. The thinking is that we need to get the necessary population immunity that will help us minimize the risk of getting infections in the country,” he stressed.

  • Use generators – Okoe-Boye tells hospitals amidst ‘dumsor’ crisis

Use generators – Okoe-Boye tells hospitals amidst ‘dumsor’ crisis

Health Minister-designate Bernard Okoe-Boye has advised health facilities to utilize alternative power sources, particularly generator sets, in response to the recent erratic power supply.

Speaking at a press briefing during his visit to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Okoe-Boye refuted claims of neglect toward the health sector and urged the public to discuss these issues objectively.

He emphasized that hospitals are integral parts of the country and are thus affected by any challenges the nation faces.

Dr. Okoe-Boye underscored the importance of hospitals being adequately prepared to manage power outages, especially during critical times when an uninterrupted power supply is vital for patient care.

He also highlighted the necessity for health facilities to have reliable backup power sources, such as generator sets, to ensure continuous operations during periods of power cuts.

“Because someone did a video of one minute, and 40 seconds and said lights have gone out, everybody goes emotional. The truth is that, if the country experiences some issues with power availability, hospitals are not outside the country, they will also experience some.”

“Another truth is that most of our hospitals have standby power plants, but just like management of a house, you can go to a house, they have a generator but maybe the generator has an issue.

“The one to put in petrol has an issue. Let’s stick to the essentials. Let’s ask a hospital, how is your generator? Is it working? If it’s not working, have you approached the ministry? If it’s working, who was in charge? Why didn’t you make it work? I don’t want to go into the details. We should not get sensational. Let’s stick to the essentials.

“If we want to discuss power supply in hospitals and standby generators, let’s discuss it. That is the way to make progress. You can do an audit, in Accra, there are 40 government hospitals, out of the 40, about thirty have power plants. Ten don’t have. Doctor, what are you doing about it? That is the way to make progress,” the minister-designate said.

This advice follows calls for health facilities to be exempted from ongoing intermittent power cuts due to their adverse impact on healthcare delivery.

‘Dumsor’ crisis gradually coming to an end – ECG reportedly claims

Sources close to the Electricity Corporation of Ghana (ECG), according to Asaasenews, have confirmed that the seven weeks of load-shedding that have affected the entire country are gradually coming to an end.

Sunday, April 28, 2024, the report said, marked a significant improvement in power generation, making it the best weekend since the load-shedding began.

As a result of these improvements, no part of the nation experienced load management on Sunday, the report added.

However, this claim has been contested by some citizens living at Frafraha, John Tei, who say they experienced power outages on the said day.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reassured that the ongoing power supply issues, known as ‘dumsor‘, will soon be resolved.

He made this statement during his campaign tour of the Eastern Region while speaking to the Clergy and Imams in Akropong on Monday, April 29.

Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence in the government’s efforts to address the issue, which has led to criticism of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) by businesses, groups, and individuals.

“I know there are challenges and I don’t want to paper over economic challenges. We are going to work on them. Currently, we have issues with power but I say that from the information I have received from the minister for energy, those power challenges will very soon, and I mean very soon be a thing of the past,” the vice president said.

The Ghana Union of Traders Association has joined the voices calling on ECG for a load-shedding timetable to guide their operations.

Despite this, ECG has maintained that the current challenge does not necessitate a load-shedding timetable.

  • Akufo-Addo never asked Yagbonwura to stand and greet him – Tweep shares video evidence

Akufo-Addo never asked Yagbonwura to stand and greet him – Tweep shares video evidence

President Akufo-Addo has faced heavy criticism for allegedly requesting the Yagbonwura Bi-kunuto Jewu Soale, the Overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area, to get up from his throne to greet him during the one-year anniversary of the Yagbonwura held in Damongo.

But a recent video in circulation now casts doubt on the earlier narrative, which was being pushed.

President Akufo-Addo, in a video circulating on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, was alleged to have demanded that the Yagbonwura Bi-kunuto Jewu Soale, the Overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area, rise to greet him during a courtesy visit.

It is reported that Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Damongo MP, reached out to the Yagbonwura and requested that he stand up and descend from his skin to exchange handshakes with the President.

A video shared by X user @NanaKwame which shows a relatively lengthy interaction between the President and the Dagbonwura does not indicate any tension between the two personalities.

@NanaKwame claimed that the sub-chiefs cleared the way for the President to greet the King properly.

Per the video, the president stood as other individuals went to greet the Yagbonwura as Mr Jinapor guided them. When the coast was clear, President Akufo-Addo made his way to greet the Yabgonwura.

The X user believes the current narrative has been orchestrated by the opposition National Democratic Congress to paint President Akufo-Addo in a bad light.

Does Akufo-Addo ask his hometown chief to stand up and greet him – Felix Ofosu Kwakye wonders

Former Deputy Information Minister under the Mahama administration, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has taken President Akufo-Addo over his gross disrespect against some traditional authorities in the country.

President Akufo-Addo has once again found himself in a controversy involving the traditional authorities of the country.

Now, the President, in a video circulating on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, has been found demanding that the Yagbonwura Bi-kunuto Jewu Soale, the Overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area, rise to greet him during a courtesy visit.

Per the video, President Akufo-Addo gave the order and stood still waiting for the Yagbonwura to get up from his throne to greet him. However, the Yagbonwura did no such thing in the presence of his subjects.

Reacting to this, Mr Kwakye Ofosu asked why the president was not able to command Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to rise during their numerous meetings.

“Why does President Akufo-Addo crave so much for Chiefs and other traditional rulers to stand when greeting him?Is he able to command his hometown Chief to do same?

“And why must he show such flagrant disrespect to other traditional rulers?” he asked.

The issue has not been taken lightly by netizens on social media who believe the president’s posture exudes arrogance.

“It is high time the arrogance stop,” a user wrote.

Less than a week ago, President Akufo-Addo received harsh criticism after a video showed the president ordering traditional authorities present at the funeral ceremony of the late Alhaji Rashid Bawa on Saturday, April 20, at Kadjebi in the Oti Region, to rise from their seats and greet him.

Injunction application against Ejisu by-election withdrawn

The High Court in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, has dismissed an injunction application against the by-election in Ejisu after the plaintiff, Emmanuel Gallo, withdrew the case.

Gallo, the former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), had filed for an interlocutory injunction to stop the Ejisu by-election scheduled for April 30.

His aim was to halt the election until a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission (EC), which sought to prevent Esther Osei from representing the party in the poll, was resolved.

Gallo claimed that the party had officially informed the EC of its decision not to participate in the by-election on April 18.

However, he later withdrew the case, citing calls from notable individuals, including the former party chair and current Paramount Chief of Nandom Traditional Area, Naa Prof. Edmund N. Dele Chii VIII.

Gallo stated that he withdrew the case to promote cohesion and unity among CPP members.

“The same introspection the Plaintiff considers to help with the unity and cohesion within the party. Based on these happenings and calls, the Plaintiff prays to withdraw the instant application and the Suit even though it is clear that the Defendant cannot legally conduct the elections with an illegitimate candidate purporting to be a constitutionally elected parliamentary candidate in the Ejisu bye-election. I pray accordingly,” the plaintiff told the court.

This is after the Convention People’s Party (CPP) clarified that it has not placed any injunction on the parliamentary by-election process in Ejisu.

In response, the court presided over by Her Ladyship ELLEN L. S. Mireku, said, “The application for Injunction against the Electoral Commission is struck out as withdrawn. The suit is also struck out as withdrawn. No order as to cost.”

Court grants 1 out of 4 arrested for EC’s stolen BVRs bail

An Accra High Court has granted bail to Joseph Blankson Adumadzie, one of the four individuals arrested in connection with the theft of laptops and Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits belonging to the Electoral Commission (EC).

Adumadzie, a Database Administrator, was granted bail by the High Court last week. His counsel informed the Dansoman Circuit Court that they were in the process of serving the High Court proceedings on the Police to execute the bail, which is why Adumadzie was not present in court.

Meanwhile, the other three accused persons—Philip Tettey, a 26-year-old casual worker; Benjamin Fienyi, a security man; and Clifford Yeboah, a student—were remanded into lawful custody by the Dansoman Circuit Court.

At the latest proceedings at the Dansoman Circuit Court, Clifford Yeboah’s lawyer reiterated an application for bail for his client, noting that Yeboah had forfeited his examinations due to the case. The defence counsel pointed out the High Court’s decision to grant bail to Adumadzie.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, objected to bail for the accused persons, citing the nature of the case, which is of national interest. Chief Inspector Wonder highlighted that the Dell Laptop Computers stolen from the EC had not been retrieved and contained important data.

The court, presided over by Halima Abdul El Lawal Basit, adjourned the matter to May 6, 2024.

The accused persons have been jointly charged with conspiracy to steal and stealing, while Yeboah has been charged with dishonestly receiving the stolen equipment. All the accused persons have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the prosecution, the theft was discovered during a maintenance exercise on March 9, 2024, when it was noticed that five Dell laptops belonging to the EC had been stolen from the BVR kits. The matter was reported to the National Security, leading to the arrest of the accused persons.

The prosecution revealed that three HP laptops of the EC were retrieved from Yeboah, and an HP printer and three Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) were retrieved from Fienyi. It was also alleged that Fienyi and Adumadzie planned to steal printers during the relocation of materials from the EC’s old Head Office to a new warehouse in Accra in March 2023.

Additionally, Tettey was accused of stealing three HP laptops and giving them to Yeboah for repair, while Adumadzie allegedly stole an HP printer and gave it to Fienyi. Fienyi was also said to have taken three BVD printer chargers home.

The prosecution stated that investigations are ongoing, and they will soon present further evidence to the court.

  • ILO’s projection about us will never come to pass – SSNIT

ILO’s projection about us will never come to pass – SSNIT

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has responded to the study by the International Labour Organization (ILO) projecting a complete depletion of SSNIT’s reserve by 2036, calling it a prediction.

Joseph Poku, SSNIT’s Chief Actuary, stated that the study is conducted every three years as required by law, providing an overview of the scheme’s status, assets, and liabilities.

He added that it also offers management ideas on measures to ensure the scheme’s sustainability.

During a press conference on Monday, Mr. Poku cited previous projections, including a 2011 report that predicted SSNIT would be unable to pay funds by 2019, to emphasize that such forecasts should be taken with caution.

“The recommendations are not going to happen at all costs, that’s not what it is. So it gives you an idea that based on these assumptions, it’s likely to happen but there is no certainty. So, in 2011, it was projected that the scheme reserved will run or will be depleted.”

“The report (2011) says, among other things, that if contribution rates were not increased in the future, the annual expenditure on benefits and registration would exceed income from contributions and the funds from 2019 would just tank,” he said.

“What it said was that by 2019, we’re not going to have enough money to pay benefits. We are in 2024 and we have never defaulted in payments or benefits from 2019 up to date. So in this report, it’s not different from the reports that we’ve obtained over the years. Like I said, it gives you an idea of where you are going as a scheme, and then you take proactive measures to steer off, if there is any danger ahead of you,” Mr Poku explained.

Following an actuarial valuation study of the Social Security and National Insurance Trusts (SSNIT) viability, the International Labour Organization (ILO) projected a complete depletion of SSNIT’s reserve by 2036.

ILO’s study indicated that total income, including contributions, investment income, and other income, would no longer be sufficient to cover annual expenditures, including benefit payments to pensioners, by 2029.

“Starting in 2029, total income (contributions, investment income and other income) is no longer sufficient to pay for annual expenditures. The reserve starts to decrease. During the year 2036, the reserve drops to zero” the research emphasised.

SSNIT will rely solely on its reserves to meet payment demands, leading to a gradual depletion process until it reaches zero by 2036, as indicated by the valuation report.

Mr. Poku, while defending SSNIT’s sustainability, emphasized that there was no need for alarm. He acknowledged that reports over the years have consistently emphasized the necessity of increasing contribution rates.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it doesn’t count easy to increase contribution rates. It means the law has to be changed, we need to engage stakeholders, we have the employers, we have the workers as a group, we have our regulator, and the living parliament and government. So it goes through a process, and that process is a bit long,” Mr Poku said.

In an earlier press statement, SSNIT assured Ghanaians that the scheme is not solely funded by reserves and that they have sufficient funds to pay benefits owed to members.

“There has been steady growth in contributions. This growth is well supported by the current demographics and the dedicated activities of our staff in getting new employers and contributors to join the scheme.”

“Investment income has been healthy and would offset any unexpected deficit that may arise…The Trust has never missed any pension payment since 1991, when the pension scheme was introduced.”

SSNIT said the Government of Ghana continued to pay contributions on behalf of its workers, and that “modalities are in place to service the outstanding contributions”.

The Management reassured the public that it would “continue to ensure prudent management of the Fund to meet its benefits payment obligations beyond 2036.”

Finance Minister-designate, Mohammed Amin Adam, Railway Minister, Peter Amewu, Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, Ishmeal Ackah, Benjamin Boakye, Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) have been accused of plotting to ensure Mr Mahama loses his job.

In a tweet, an X user wrote, “Mafia CSOs! They topple certain govt officials to create jobs for themselves. Finance Minister Amin Anta, Railway Minister Peter Amewu, PURC Executive Sec. Ishmeal Ackah, were all directors at ACEP n are workn with the current DG Ben to oust ECG Boss! Mafia!!!.”

The X user, however, failed to reveal the reason these personalities would be working to have Mr Mahama ousted.

Recently, ACEP criticized the power distribution company for its failure to provide a load-shedding timetable amidst the escalating power outages, commonly known as ‘dumsor.’

According to the user, the individuals said to be after the ECG boss’ job were at one time directors of ACEP.

Peter Amewu is a co-founder of Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), where he worked as the director of policy and research, and provided policy advice to support a variety of government and private sector projects.

Prior to his role as the Deputy Minister for Energy, Dr Amin Adam was the Founder and Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP).

Dr. Ishmael Ackah was head of Policy Unit at the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), prior to his role as Executive Secretary at Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

People are now fed up – Former A-G reacts to ‘dumsor’ crisis

Former Attorney-General Betty Mould-Iddrisu has added her voice to the ongoing discourse on Ghana’s power crisis.

Mrs. Mould-Iddrisu particularly highlighted the challenges faced in the Ashanti Region, especially after the renaming of the Ameri plant, describing the level of power outages as unprecedented.

“After the renaming of the Ameri plant, the dumsor that we have experienced in the region [Ashanti Region] is unparalleled, even during our time, there wasn’t dumsor like that, and people are now fed up.”

She asserted that the Mahama administration handled the situation more effectively than the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Her remarks come in response to former GIMPA Rector Professor Stephen Adei’s comments, who suggested that the current power crisis is less severe than it was under the Mahama administration.

Speaking to TV3, Mrs. Mould-Iddrisu expressed concern over the current erratic power supply under the NDC, noting that it is not as severe as the situation under the current Akufo-Addo administration.

  • High Court declines request to force Akufo-Addo to receive anti-LGBTQ+ bill

High Court declines request to force Akufo-Addo to receive anti-LGBTQ+ bill

The Accra High Court has rejected a plea to compel President Akufo-Addo to receive the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

This comes after a lawsuit was filed by National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor on March 25.

In his suit, the MP sought several declarations and orders regarding the President’s powers under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

Mr. Dafeamekpor asked for a declaration that, according to Article 106(1) and (7) of the Constitution, a President can only assent to or refuse to assent to a bill within seven days, unless the bill has been referred to the Council of State.

He also sought a declaration that the President cannot prevent Parliament from transmitting a bill that has been passed to him.

Additionally, the MP wanted a declaration that a letter dated March 18, 2024, addressed to the Clerk of Parliament and signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, is in contravention of the Constitution, and therefore, the President must withdraw the letter.

However, the Attorney-General, represented by Chief State Attorney Sylvia Adeso, argued that the High Court had no jurisdiction to grant the application filed by Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.

Justice Ellen Mireku, in her ruling, indicated that the Court has jurisdiction but dismissed the application using her discretionary powers. She noted that two suits filed by private citizens Prof Amanda Odoi and Richard Dela Sky had direct implications on the mandamus application and hence could not approve the reliefs being sought by the South Dayi Member of Parliament.

Regarding the Anti-LGBTQ Bill, Parliament passed the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill on Wednesday, February 28.

The bill punishes those who take part in LGBTQ sexual acts, as well as those who promote the rights of gay, lesbian, or other non-conventional sexual or gender identities with time in prison.

Despite public support for the bill, concerns have been raised, including by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), regarding discrimination and the potential infringement of constitutional freedoms. Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, has defended the bill, stating that it does not violate the laws in the 1992 constitution.

The Finance Ministry has advised President Akufo-Addo against signing the bill, citing potential financial challenges, including the loss of funding from the World Bank.

However, President Akufo-Addo has reassured the international community of Ghana’s commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law, noting that the bill is facing a legal challenge at the Supreme Court, and no action will be taken until a decision is made.

Your contributions are safe – SSNIT tells beneficiaries

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has refuted claims suggesting that the Scheme might encounter difficulties in meeting its financial obligations to beneficiaries in the future, as outlined in the 2020 International Labour Organization Actuary Report.

Recognizing the speculative nature of the report’s findings, the Scheme emphatically stated that these projections do not correspond with the current realities on the ground.

Speaking to reporters in Accra on Monday, Joseph Poku, Chief Actuary of SSNIT, assured contributors that the scheme remains strong and adequately positioned to meet their needs.

“You cannot lift everything in there and say SSNIT is collapsing in the next 12 years; it is far from the truth. These are the processes…You take a period of 75 years and then, based on reasonable assumptions, you make projections. But remember, if you alter the assumptions, the results will differ. So, don’t take the report at face value; consider it alongside the underlying assumptions,” he further stated.

Mr. Poku further clarified that despite occasional delays in government contributions, the government has fulfilled its commitments up to January 2024. Ongoing engagements are in place to ensure sustained support.

“Monthly contributions have been paid up to January 2024,” he said, adding “While we recognize that March payments should have been made by now, it’s important to note that the government has fully covered January’s contributions, and part of February’s as well. Any delays are minimal, considering the overall timeline,” he said.

BJs and smoking of shisha among several causes of throat cancer – Otolaryngologist at Korle Bu

A medical doctor and otolaryngologist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Ama Boatemaa Prah, has cautioned against smoking shisha and oral sex, as they can increase the risk of throat cancer.

She also highlighted other risk factors for throat cancer, including smoking tobacco or marijuana, engaging in blowjobs, and exposure to leaking female genital fluids.

“Through oral sex, you can transmit the virus called the HPV virus which is implicated in causing cervical cancer so that same organism that can cause cervical cancer if you are getting it in your throat, you can get throat cancer,” Dr. Prah explained on TV3’s New Day, April 24.

Dr. Ama Boatemaa Prah emphasized that throat cancer is primarily linked to heavy smokers and those exposed to second-hand smoke, affecting the voice box or larynx.

Throat cancer refers to the development of cancerous tumors in the throat (pharynx), voice box (larynx), or tonsils. It is often categorized based on the specific area affected:

    1. Pharyngeal cancer: This type of throat cancer occurs in the pharynx, which is the hollow tube that runs from behind the nose to the top of the windpipe (trachea).
    2. Laryngeal cancer: This type affects the voice box (larynx), which is located in the neck and is responsible for producing sound.
    3. Tonsil cancer: Tonsil cancer affects the tonsils, which are located at the back of the throat.

Throat cancer is often associated with tobacco use, including smoking and smokeless tobacco, as well as excessive alcohol consumption. Other risk factors include infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), a diet low in fruits and vegetables, and exposure to certain chemicals.

Symptoms of throat cancer can include a persistent sore throat, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, ear pain, a lump in the neck, and unexplained weight loss.

Treatment options for throat cancer depend on the location and stage of the cancer but may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these treatments. Early detection and treatment can improve the prognosis for individuals with throat cancer.

Dr. Prah advised individuals experiencing such symptoms to seek medical attention for diagnosis and treatment.

After surgery, patients may have options such as voice prosthesis installation to aid in speaking.

Pompous, arrogant Akufo-Addo orders Yagbonwura to stand and greet him

President Akufo-Addo has once again found himself in a controversy involving the traditional authorities of the country.

Now, the President, in a video circulating on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, has been found allegedly demanding the same from the Yagbonwura Bi-kunuto Jewu Soale, the Overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area, during a courtesy visit.

Per the video, President Akufo-Addo gave the order and stool still waiting for the Yagbonwura to get up from his throne to greet him. However, the Yagbonwura did no such thing in the presence of his subjects.

The issue has not been taken lightly by netizens on social media who believe the president’s posture exudes arrogance.

“It is high time the arrogance stop,” a user wrote.

In an interview with TV3, Mould-Iddrisu expressed concern over the current erratic power supply under the NPP, noting that it was not as dire as the situation during the Mahama era.

Why the attacks in the media? Use the right channel – EC tells IMANI

The Electoral Commission (EC) has urged the policy think tank, IMANI Africa, to avoid going to the media with concerns about the electoral body.

Instead, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services, encouraged IMANI to utilize due processes and legal channels to address any issues.

Dr. Quaicoe made this statement during an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, on Monday.

“People must be patient to understand issues. Even if we have faulted, why do they always run to the media? Why the attacks in the media? There are procedures they can use to seek redress. The media attacks are unnecessary,” he lamented.

Following IMANI Africa’s concerns raised on social media and in media reports regarding the discovery of 10 obsolete biometric verification devices (BVDs) at a recycling company in Madina, the Electoral Commission (EC) has responded.

The EC clarified that these devices were legally auctioned and had been acquired before the 2012 elections. However, IMANI Africa has continued to question the EC’s explanation.

Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, raised doubts about the number of BVDs auctioned off and the disposal process of the remaining devices.

He expressed concerns about the EC’s leadership and the transparency of their actions, suggesting a pattern of misconduct and misinformation.

Mr Cudjoe called on the media to conduct further investigations to address these questions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the credibility of the electoral process in Ghana.

You can cheat on my sister but don’t let her find out – Man advises brother-in-law at marriage ceremony

A Ghanaian man has gone viral on X platform, formerly Twitter, for the advice he gave his future brother-in-law before his marriage to his sister.

In the video, the middle-aged man, dressed in Kente, advised his future brother-in-law to be smart and cover his tracks if he ever cheats on his sister.

“We are all men over here. All men are cheaters. The wise ones are those who cheat without letting their wives know.

“I know pastors will tell you not to cheat on your wife. I know you are a Christian. If you will cheat on your wife, don’t let her know,” he said.

He insisted that at no point should his mistress be well off than his sister.

“Don’t take care of your mistress more than your wife,” he said.

He advised his future brother-in-law to spend lavishly on his sister.

He explained that since she has been pampered by her loved ones from home, less cannot be expected when she gets married.

“Don’t be lazy. Be hardworking so you can provide her with money to spend. Because she has been pampered in the home she is coming from. Take her shopping, make her expensive,” he said.

The man’s counsel has received divided opinions from X users. While others believe the man is in the right, others say such advice should never be considered.

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr.

And so what if I am an NDC member, it doesn’t concern you – Former Ejisu MP goes hard on NPP

Former Ejisu Member of Parliament, Kwame Owusu Aduomi, has broken his silence after being accused of siding with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in his quest to win the Ejisu by-election slated for April 30, 2024.

In his final campaign rally before the Ejisu by-election on April 30, flagbearer for the NPP, Dr Bawumia warned against splitting votes among independent candidates, suggesting that such actions could unintentionally benefit the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leader, John Mahama.

“The NPP government has improved the lives and the people of Ejisu than the NDC. Nothing really worked during the NDC era…MPs don’t sponsor projects; they lobby for projects from the government in power…In parliament, the NPP has 138 including the independent candidate while NDC has 137. And so, a vote for an independent means handing over power to NDC and John Mahama.

“And so that is why the NDC did not fill a candidate for this by-election, they are sponsoring the independent candidate”, he remarked. Let’s all come out in our numbers on election day and vote massively for Lawyer Kwabena Boateng to continue the late John Kumah’s work”, he said.

Reacting to this comment while engaging the media, Kwame Owusu Aduomi noted that should the NDC support him, it could only mean they are impressed by the initiatives he took while serving as a legislator.

Despite indicating that he is not an NDC member, he noted that it is none of the ruling party’s business should he decide to join the opposition party.

“Living here with you all, can you say I am not an NPP member? But they say I am an NDC member. If NDC likes me, it could be because of my good work when I was an MP. They all benefited from it. So if NDC likes me, that is it but that does not mean I am an NDC,” he said.

“Even if I am an NDC member, I like it. It doesn’t concern you.”

He also cautioned against any tactics by the ruling party that would surmount the will of the Ejisu electorates.

“Anyone who tries to manipulate the elections or brings thugs to cause violence, shall not succeed. It will not happen here. Anyone who tries that will also face the consequences.

“Here is a town belonging to Yaa Asantewaa. So we are not afraid of blood,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo has strongly refuted accusations that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) intends to manipulate the upcoming Ejisu by-election.

Addressing voters, he urged them to disregard such claims made by the Independent Parliamentary Candidate, Kwame Owusu Aduomi.

Internal conflicts will be addressed before 2024 elections – NPP Chairman

The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ntim, has promised to address internal party conflicts as the party prepares for the December elections.

Recent disputes, such as members running as independent candidates in the 2024 parliamentary elections, have led to dissatisfaction among party members.

Speaking at a significant rally in Ejisu on Sunday, April 28, Mr. Ntim reassured supporters that the party would take decisive action to resolve these issues and maintain unity.

He urged all party members to remain calm and united as they prepare for the upcoming tasks.

“I do not want issues of independent candidature to plague our party”, Ntim stated as he wooed electorates to vote for the NPP’s Kwabena Boateng.”

“And it is obvious that such individuals are closest members of our great party. But I can assure you that when Kwabena Boateng is elected MP for Ejisu our national leadership will ensure that all internal issues in the various constituencies will be resolved, he added.

Hundreds of supporters of the ruling party gathered in Ejisu and other locations for final campaign rallied ahead of the polls on 30 April. The streets were filled with political messaging as the ruling party presented Kwabena Boateng to retain the seat.

President Akufo-Addo, who joined the campaign trail, addressed the crowd and responded to accusations made by former NPP MP turned independent candidate Kwabena Owusu Aduomi.

Mr Aduomi, who left the NPP to contest independently, alleged that the ruling party was planning to win the late John Kumah’s seat through intimidation and rigging tactics.

President Akufo-Addo dismissed Aduomi’s claims, questioning their validity given Aduomi’s prior victories under the NPP banner. He urged voters in Ejisu to disregard Aduomi’s allegations and emphasized the importance of a fair election process.

“In 2008, when he defeated the incumbent MP, who was even a Cabinet Minister, did the NPP rig the elections for him?

“So why does he now allege that we will rig the elections just because he has been defeated by someone else? Is this fair?” he asked.

FLASHBACK: Angry NPP youth in Fomena repaint party office with NDC colours

In March 2022, over one hundred disgruntled members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Fomena Constituency of the Ashanti Region demonstrated against the party’s leadership and threatened to defect to the opposition NDC over alleged preferential treatment of persons linked to the Independent MP for the area, Andrew Amoako Asiamah.

The angry NPP supporters who demonstrated played campaign songs of former President John Mahama as they stressed that they would not be voting for the NPP in the next general election.

The disappointed NPP members held placards with inscriptions such as “let the NPP constitution work, John Boadu and co, we will resist the imposition of Asiamah, No unopposed in Fomena, we will defend the NPP constitution among others.

In a bid to show their seriousness, the aggrieved protestors who threatened to defect to the NDC then painted the NPP Fomena Constituency office in NDC colours. They then pasted posters of former president John Mahama on the building.

The protestors vowed to resist attempts by the Independent Member of Parliament for the area, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, to be imposed on them in the next general elections.

They alleged that the leadership of the party had begun some machinations to favour supporters of the independent Member of Parliament as against those believed to be from other camps in the ongoing polling station elections.

A spokesperson for the aggrieved supporters of NPP in the Fomena Constituency, Emmanuel Domah, told Citi News their protest was a result of unfair treatment meted out to some party members by the party leadership.

The Independent Parliamentary Candidate has been accused of switching from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the NDC in order to win the upcoming Ejisu by-election slated for April 30, 2024.

“Living here with you all, can you say I am not an NPP member? But they say I am an NDC member. If NDC likes me, it could be because of my good work when I was an MP. They all benefited from it. So if NDC likes me, that is it but that does not mean I am an NDC,” he said.

He also cautioned against any tactics by the ruling party that will surmount the will of Ejisu electorates.

Yagbonwura ‘disobeys’ Akufo-Addo’s orders to stand up and greet him

President Akufo-Addo has once again found himself in a controversy involving the traditional authorities of the country.

Aduomi is being sponsored by NDC, reject him – Bawumia tells Ejisu constituents

Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on constituents in Ejisu to prioritize continuity and progress by voting for the party’s candidate, Kwabena Boateng.

In his final campaign rally before the Ejisu by-election on April 30, Bawumia warned against splitting votes to independent candidates, suggesting that such actions could unintentionally benefit the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leader, John Mahama.

With the NPP holding 138 seats in parliament against the NDC’s 137, Bawumia highlighted the slim margin and emphasized the significance of every vote in securing a stronger mandate for the ruling party.

He underscored the importance of party loyalty and unity, advising against deviating from the NPP candidate and urging constituents to vote for continuity and progress in the constituency.

“The NPP government has improved the lives and the people of Ejisu than the NDC. Come debate me on credibility and policies – Bawumia dares Mahama

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has issued a challenge to former President John Mahama for a two-person debate ahead of the December 7, 2024, general election.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Communications Director for the Bawumia campaign team, emphasized in a statement that such a debate would allow Ghanaians to choose their next leader after President Akufo-Addo.

Aboagye highlighted that the debate would center on the achievements of both candidates and their proposed solutions to address the current economic challenges facing the country.

He further noted that the debate would help voters differentiate between the two candidates, particularly regarding their governance track records and approaches to addressing national issues.

“The big issue for 2024 comes down to the two personalities. Which of the two main candidates will Ghanaians want as their next leader after 2024? The one who was given his chance and blew it through his incompetence or the one who has shown what he can do even as a Vice President and is now asking to also be given the opportunity to show what he can do as President? We are daring the main opposition Party to come to a debate on the two personalities.”

“Dr. Bawumia’s Campaign invites the Ghanaian voter to focus on the credibility and weight of the policies of each of the two foremost presidential candidates – Bawumia and Mahama. In the next few months, the Bawumia campaign will humbly but decisively address all major issues facing our nation and how, with the current positive turnaround, he intends to consolidate the gains and tackle the outstanding issues head-on if given the mandate in December,” an excerpt of the statement said.

Dr. Bawumia is scheduled to kick off his political campaign today, Monday, April 29, in preparation for the December general elections. Beginning in the Eastern Region, the campaign will cover all 16 regions over the next month.

During his tour, Dr. Bawumia plans to interact with a wide range of stakeholders, including traditional leaders, clergy, youth groups, traders, drivers, farmers, students, and business owners.

The campaign will focus on engaging citizens from various sectors of society, with visits to marketplaces aimed at interacting with both traders and consumers.

God makes rulers, the best legacy you can leave is to exit peacefully – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized to President Akufo-Addo that determining his successor is not within the President’s authority as he prepares to leave office.

Speaking at a ceremony in Damongo, in the Savannah Region, where he laid the foundation stone for a new multipurpose Ndewura Jakpa palace, Mahama reminded the outgoing President that overseeing a peaceful and credible election is the most significant legacy he owes to the people of Ghana.

The project, featuring Malian architectural designs, includes a palace, a residence, and a meeting area, and is being financed by Mahama himself.

Although President Akufo-Addo was present at the ceremony, he had departed before Mahama made these comments directed at him.

“I wish to urge our president; this was my message to Nana Akufo-Addo, unfortunately he has left, and he has left only our member of the council of state on the high table.

“I wish to urge our President that the best legacy he can leave this country, is to superintend over a peaceful, transparent and credible election.”

‘I wish to remind him, that it is God who makes rulers and he can never ever be the one to choose his successor. It is God who will choose his successor “he stated to thunderous cheers from the crowd.

Former President John Dramani Mahama reiterated Ghana’s role as a beacon of democracy in Africa and emphasized the incumbent President’s responsibility to uphold this reputation. He condemned the violent incidents during the 2020 elections, where eight Ghanaians reportedly lost their lives due to alleged shootings by security personnel.

Mahama expressed surprise at the lack of a thorough investigation into the matter, the punishment of the perpetrators, and adequate compensation for the victims’ families. He pledged that if the NDC regains power after the 2024 election, the families of the victims would receive proper compensation.

The new multipurpose Ndewura Jakpa palace project, which features Architect Atibila as the consultant and Grandeza Construction Company Limited as the builders, is scheduled for completion in October 2024.

There will be no new uniforms or mass school repainting – Education Ministry

The Ministry of Education has clarified comments made by Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum regarding changes to public basic schools, stating that there are no plans for a nationwide rollout of new uniforms and repainting of all schools.

According to the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, Dr. Adutwum’s comments were specifically referring to newly constructed 21st Century Model Junior High Schools.

These schools will have the option to choose “brighter and friendly colors” for painting and potentially new uniforms.

“The aim is to lighten and enhance the appearance and physical outlook of the new schools. It is never a case of repainting existing schools or altering them in anyway,” the statement clarifies.

The Ministry’s clarification comes after confusion arose from Dr. Adutwum’s announcement at a recent forum. Initially, he discussed a nationwide transition to “blue and white” uniforms and painting all schools.

However, the Ministry has clarified that these changes are specific to new schools and are options rather than mandates.

Leverkusen extend their unbeaten run to 46 games

Bayer Leverkusen continued their unbeaten run to 46 games with a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against Stuttgart, securing a 2-2 draw at the BayArena.

Trailing 2-0 after 56 minutes, Leverkusen fought back to salvage a point, with Robert Andrich netting in the 96th minute. Despite already being crowned Bundesliga champions, Leverkusen showed resilience to maintain their unbeaten record.

Stuttgart had taken the lead through Chris Fuhrich and Deniz Undav, but Leverkusen responded with a goal from Amine Adli before Andrich’s late equaliser.

This result comes after Leverkusen’s 97th-minute equaliser against Borussia Dortmund last week, highlighting their ability to snatch late results. Under Xabi Alonso’s management, Leverkusen are aiming for the first unbeaten campaign in Bundesliga history, with three games left in the season.

In addition to their domestic success, Leverkusen are also pursuing a European trophy, having reached the semi-finals of the Europa League. Their unbeaten run includes 39 wins and seven draws across all competitions, with a potential treble still on the cards. Leverkusen will face Serie A side Roma in the Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday, with the German Cup final also on the horizon.

  • You can’t waste scares resources to repaint public schools in this economic crisis – Minority tells Education Minister

You can’t waste scares resources to repaint public schools in this economic crisis – Minority tells Education Minister

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Minority has called on the Education Minister to halt the rebranding of public basic schools and instead focus on addressing critical challenges in basic education in the country.

In a statement issued by Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, the Deputy Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Education Committee and NDC Member of Parliament (MP) for Bulsa South, the Minority expressed concerns about the allocation of resources towards rebranding efforts.

They emphasized the need to prioritize resolving pressing issues affecting basic education.

“How can the Minister, at this time of economic crisis in Ghana, be thinking of wasting public resources to repaint public schools in Blue and White colours; and introduce wearing of Blue and White uniforms in public schools, when one million plus public basic school pupils have no access to furniture?”

“Has the Minister (Education) forgotten, what he told Parliament, during his last visit? In his report to Parliament, it has been captured that only 65 per cent of textbooks have been supplied thus far.”

“May I remind him that capitation grants are still in arrears for the equivalent of eight terms?”

He questioned how rebranding could be a priority in the face of these challenges facing public education in Ghana.

Dr. Apaak outlined a range of challenges affecting teaching and learning in public basic schools in Ghana. These include the delay in the release of the Capitation Grant, which was in arrears for eight tranches (equivalent to eight terms), as well as infrastructural deficits such as poor toilet facilities.

He also highlighted the lack of textbooks from kindergarten to junior high school, more than three years after the introduction of reforms, and the absence of sample questions for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates, who represent the first batch of the new reform.

Additionally, Dr. Apaak pointed out the lack of furniture for both teachers and students, inadequate security personnel to protect school properties leading to theft cases, unpaid utility bills (electricity and water) resulting in disconnections, and the challenge of waste disposal faced by schools in urban areas due to the lack of funds to pay waste collectors.

He emphasized that basic school administrators were struggling to manage schools due to inadequate funding, neglect, and delays in the release of the capitation grants.

Dr. Apaak stressed that these were the issues the Education Minister should prioritize, rather than focusing on the colors of school blocks and uniforms. He criticized the expenditure of public resources on painting schools in specific colors and introducing new uniforms, which he deemed as misplaced priorities.

“We call on Ghanaians to join us in resisting this needless initiative in the collective interest of the State of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.

“If the Ministry of Education has funds, advisedly, those funds should go to address the long list of challenges narrated by Heads of public basic schools.”

Other members are Mr Ebenezer Mettle Nunoo, Mr Charles Dugbartey Nanor, Mr Sampson Tetteh Kpankpah, Madam Sarah Dugbarkie Pobee, and Mr Samuel Kabutey.

The local management committees of the fund play a crucial role in allocating resources directly benefiting mining communities, land interest holders, traditional and local government authorities, and institutions responsible for mining development.

During the inauguration, Mr Kwaku Sakyi Addo, the Chairman of the Minerals Development Fund Board, urged committee members to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to drive sustainable development in the area. He also commended Electrochem Ghana Limited, a commercial salt mining company, for its commitment to development by paying ground rent and royalties to the Ada state, contrasting this with the challenges faced by larger companies in meeting royalty obligations after several years of operation.

Mr Sakyi Addo, along with Dr Noriss Hamma, the Administrator of the Mineral Development Fund, presented a cheque for GHS250,000 to the committee as seed money, demonstrating the fund’s commitment to supporting development initiatives in mining communities.

Nico Williams accuses Atletico fans of racism

Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams scored in their 3-1 La Liga defeat at Atletico Madrid, where he accused a section of home fans of racially abusing him.

The Spain winger requested referee Juan Martinez to halt the match midway through the first half at Estadio Civitas Metropolitano.

The game was paused for an announcement to the crowd, and Atletico players Antoine Griezmann and Jose Maria Gimenez seemed to urge their fans to cease the chanting before play resumed.

“I have gone to take a corner and I have heard monkey sounds,” 21-year-old Williams told DAZN.

“There are stupid people everywhere, but nothing happens. We have to keep working.

“I hope this changes little by little because in the end we are fighting internally and externally against this.”

Williams faced booing from some fans throughout the match, which escalated when the game was halted and continued even after he scored the equalizer just before half-time.

Talking about his goal celebration, he said: “It comes with a bit of anger.

“It is not normal that they still insult you because of your skin tone.”

Williams’ brother and team-mate Inaki Williams said: “The jeers should be directed at the people who said the insults and not at the victim.”

Writing on social media, Atletico said the club were “against any act of racism or hatred”.

A La Liga statement read: “There’s no place for racist or hateful behaviour in sport.

“La Liga vehemently condemns any racist acts and will continue working to eradicate this inexcusable behaviour from our sport.”

Williams scored to equalize Rodrigo de Paul’s opener, but Angel Correa’s goal early in the second half and an own goal from Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simon secured Atletico’s victory. Atletico is now six points ahead of fifth-placed Athletic with five games remaining this season, putting them in a strong position to secure Champions League football next season.

Last month, Real Madrid lodged a complaint with Spanish legal authorities after a video surfaced on social media allegedly showing Atletico fans chanting a racist slur aimed at Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr.

  • GSA working on Service Level Agreements with stakeholders

GSA working on Service Level Agreements with stakeholders

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) is taking steps to enhance transparency and accountability in the Shipping and Logistics sector by signing Service Level Agreements with stakeholders.

These agreements aim to ensure that both shippers and shipping service providers fulfill their obligations, promoting economic growth.

The agreements will outline the responsibilities of shipping service providers towards shippers, streamline port clearance processes, clarify time-related shipping costs, provide guidance on cost avoidance strategies, and define the role of the GSA.

Mr. Kwesi Baffour Sarpong, CEO of GSA, announced these initiatives during a workshop on “Avoiding Demurrage and Rent” for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) held at the Shippers’ House in Accra.

The speech was delivered on his behalf by Mrs. Sylvia Asana Dauda Owu, the Director of Operations at GSA, on Tuesday, 23rd April 2024.

GPHA’s Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager, Nana Esi Soderberg addressing the gathering

Mrs. Owu stated, “The GSA is actively working to enforce the provisions outlined in the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Regulations 2012 (L.I. 2190), with a specific focus on Section 6, which outlines service standards designed to uphold minimum quality levels in shipping services provided to shippers.”

Importers have long struggled with demurrage and rent charges, often facing financial challenges in their shipping activities. The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) has received numerous complaints from shippers regarding demurrage fees imposed by shipping lines, despite delays not being the fault of the shippers.

To tackle this issue, the GSA launched the “Avoiding Demurrage and Rent” seminar series in 2018. The initiative aims to educate shippers on the importance of initiating clearance procedures for goods before their arrival at the port, thus reducing the likelihood of incurring demurrage charges.

The GSA’s focus on Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) was driven by research showing that government agencies are among the top payers of demurrage charges. Mrs. Sylvia Asana Dauda Owu reiterated the Authority’s commitment to establishing a “demurrage-free port” for the benefit of shippers and the national economy. She urged MDAs and State-Owned Enterprises’ leadership to expedite the clearance of consignments from ports to minimize avoidable costs incurred using state resources.

Mrs. Monica Josiah, Head of Shipper Services and Trade Facilitation Department at GSA, appealed to MDAs responsible for granting permits and licenses to shippers to be mindful of their services to avoid demurrage charges. Participants, including freight forwarders and MDA representatives, emphasized the importance of staying informed about new developments for cost-effective business operations.

NPP has done enough to deserve a third term – Party communicator

Eric Twum, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s Communications Team, has asserted that the NPP has performed admirably and deserves to be retained in the upcoming December polls.

Twum criticized the NPP’s main opponent, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming that they have failed to demonstrate to Ghanaians that they are a better alternative for leading the country towards socio-political development.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Citi FM and Citi TV, Twum emphasized that the NPP is focused on highlighting the positive initiatives and actions undertaken by the government to improve the lives of all citizens.

“We are focused and we have a number of positive things that we can give out to the people of this country to talk to them about and help them make the bold decision to side with us instead of a flagbearer [John Dramani Mahama] who has been rejected by the people before and will be rejected again.

“We have been able to galvanize our base and we have a future as a country and that future does not lie with the NDC.”

He further stated that the NDC and its flagbearer have failed to present any concrete and feasible policies to address the needs of Ghanaians in the past year, indicating that they have nothing new to offer the country.

“I am still struggling to remember a single policy that the NDC has proposed in the last year and I can’t remember. What will Ghanaians remember Mahama for? These are the things that we will be having conversations about. The NDC has not proposed anything apart from promising to review and abolish some initiatives of this government.”

  • Villa’s top-four hope dashes by Chelsea

Villa’s top-four hope dashes by Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino criticized video technology, stating that it is “damaging” English football after Axel Disasi had a stoppage-time winner disallowed in their draw at Aston Villa.

Pochettino‘s team came from two goals down to draw and dent Villa’s top-four hopes, but Disasi’s goal was ruled out when referee Craig Pawson decided that Benoit Badiashile had committed a foul before the cross.

The decision led to Chelsea’s players protesting and surrounding Pawson at the full-time whistle, while Pochettino engaged in a passionate discussion with Villa defender Ezri Konsa.

“They didn’t see a foul on the pitch and then VAR changed the decision of the referee,” Pochettino told BBC Match of the Day.

“For me that was a normal challenge. The decision was there and that’s it.

“For me it damaged a little bit the Premier League and English [football]. If we want to be the best league in the world it should be protecting the spectacle and the decision.

“It damaged myself, damaged my team, my players, my fans.”

Aston Villa, whose top-four aspirations now rely on other results, took an early lead when John McGinn’s deflected effort found the net off Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella.

Chelsea responded strongly, with Nicolas Jackson having a goal disallowed for offside by VAR and later hitting the post with a header.

Morgan Rogers doubled Villa’s lead with a composed finish from the left, but Chelsea pulled one back as Noni Madueke scored with a clever finish after pressing high up the pitch.

Chelsea equalized through Conor Gallagher, who curled a shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Both teams had chances to win the game, with Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer missing opportunities for Villa, while Chelsea improved their performance in the second half after being criticized by Pochettino following their 5-0 loss to Arsenal.

Chelsea’s defensive issues continued, as they have now gone 14 away games without a clean sheet, but they showed character to come back from two goals down against a strong Villa side.
