Pray for me – Adwoa Safo on Bawumia’s running mate claim

Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has responded to rumors of being considered as a running mate by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the upcoming general elections.

Adwoa Safo acknowledged that it is the vice president’s prerogative to choose his running mate and stated that if her name is indeed on the list, then she asks for prayers from the public.

When asked if she believes it is time for a woman to be considered as a running mate, Adwoa Safo did not directly answer but instead highlighted the importance of the decision and the need for the public to pray for her if she is indeed being considered.

The selection of a running mate for the 2024 elections by Dr. Bawumia is highly anticipated, especially after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) named Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as their running mate. The final decision on Dr. Bawumia’s running mate is yet to be announced.

  • I remain a Free Mason and a Catholic – Afenyo-Markin

    I remain a Free Mason and a Catholic – Afenyo-Markin

Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu and Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has reiterated that he is both a Freemason and a Roman Catholic, emphasizing that this dual identity has shaped his values, particularly in valuing friendships and keeping one’s word.

In a February 2024 interview on Citi TV, Afenyo-Markin addressed the debate surrounding his affiliations within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He highlighted that his faith allows him to be fair to all, citing his support for both Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia in the NPP’s presidential primary.

“It was a very difficult moment for me, Ken and I were Bawumia and out of the blue, he informed me that ‘Alex I want to contest.’

“I am a Freemason and a Catholic… I know how to respect friendship and if I give a word to a brother, I have to keep it,” he said in relation to backing Bawumia because of an earlier commitment.

During the primaries, Afenyo-Markin assumed an adjudication role, which precluded him from openly campaigning for either candidate. Despite this, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia emerged as the winner.

This is not the first time Afenyo-Markin has discussed his membership in Freemasonry. In a 2016 appearance on the Starr Chat show with Bola Ray, he stated that the teachings and values of Freemasonry did not conflict with his Catholic principles and upbringing.

“I am a mason and I have not been sanctioned by the Catholic Church. Freemasonry is a fraternal society that believes in God Almighty and follows certain principles that guide a man’s life and it does not run counter with my beliefs as a Catholic. President Kufuor is a mason and a Catholic,” he stated.

In 2022, a Suffragan Bishop and a leading theologian of the Catholic Church in Ghana rejected Afenyo-Markin’s assertion, stating that he could not be a Freemason and remain a Catholic without defying eleven Popes.

Freemasonry is comprised of fraternal organizations tracing their origins to local fraternities of stonemasons, which regulated the qualifications of stonemasons and their relationships with authorities and clients starting in the late 14th century.

The fundamental unit of organization in Freemasonry is the Lodge.

  • Ghana, Ivory Coast scaling down cocoa production over high cost of beans – Reports

Ghana, Ivory Coast scaling down cocoa production over high cost of beans – Reports

Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana, the world’s largest cocoa producers, have either halted or reduced processing in major plants due to soaring bean costs, leading to a global increase in chocolate prices, Reuters has reported.

The two West African nations, which together produce nearly 60% of the world’s cocoa, have been grappling with extreme weather changes and cocoa pod diseases for several months, according to a report by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) published on Tuesday.

Cocoa supplies from Cote d’Ivoire between October 2023 and February 2024 dropped by approximately 39% compared to the previous year, totaling 1.04 million metric tons, Afreximbank reported. Meanwhile, Ghana’s exports decreased by about 35% to 341,000 metric tons between September 2023 and January 2024.

Benchmark cocoa futures for March delivery on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) in New York surpassed $6,000 per metric ton last Friday before easing to around $5,880 per ton, still surpassing the previous record high of $5,379 set in 1977.

Industry analysts have warned that bean prices could continue to rise due to the global supply threat posed by the weather phenomenon El Nino, which caused droughts in West Africa in the third quarter of 2023 and is expected to persist until April.

“We need massive demand destruction to catch up with the supply destruction,” Reuters quoted Steve Wateridge, director of Tropical Research Services, as saying.

Transcao, a state-owned cocoa processor and one of Ivory Coast’s nine plants, has stated that it cannot afford to purchase beans at current prices and is relying on existing stock. Global trader Cargill has also faced challenges in sourcing beans for its major processing plant in Ivory Coast, leading to a shutdown of operations for about a week last month, according to anonymous sources cited by Reuters.

In Ghana, the world’s second-largest cocoa grower, the majority of its eight plants, including the state-owned Cocoa Processing Company (CPC), have repeatedly suspended operations for weeks since last October, as reported by the news agency. CPC has indicated that it is operating at only about 20% capacity due to the shortage.

Last week, Michele Buck, CEO of American candy giant Hershey and one of the world’s largest chocolate manufacturers, forecasted that “historic cocoa prices” would restrict earnings growth in 2024, potentially resulting in product price increases.

  • Volta coastline recorded 14 tidal wave destructions between January 2017 and February 2024

Volta coastline recorded 14 tidal wave destructions between January 2017 and February 2024

Member of Parliament for Keta, Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, has noted that the people living around the Volta Coastline have experienced 14 tidal wave destructions within the span of 7 years.

In an address to parliament, the Minister indicated that its impact on the communities along the coast has increased significantly, but the government has turned deaf ears to their plight.

Mr Speaker, in recent years, the frequency of tidal wave destruction and its impact on communities along the coast have increased significantly, but the government’s apparent indifference to the plight of our people is deeply troubling.

Mr Speaker, between January 20 2017 and February 2024 alone, a total of 16 tide wave destructions occurred along the coast of Keta Anglo and Ketu South,” Mr Gakpey stated.

Residents living along the coast in Keta and its adjoining communities have once again been hit with devastation caused by tidal waves.

At dawn on February 16, residents were met with a distressing sight of their homes inundated with seawater, exacerbating the deterioration of already crumbling structures due to years of enduring tidal waves and their aftermath.

According to some residents interviewed by Citi News, the situation has reached an intolerable level, prompting urgent calls for a resolution to halt the ongoing crisis.

“The tidal waves have since been worrying us. Last year, we had to suffer from this phenomenon, and this year, we have started experiencing the same problems. We want the authorities to take urgent steps quickly to ensure this does not affect many people.

“We are also appealing for dredging along the coast. It has been affecting our businesses as well. The trees here have also been submerged in the sea,” a resident lamented.

Margins Group and NPP do not work together – CEO clarifies

Margins Groups, the technical partners of the National Identification Authority (NIA) which is responsible for the production of the Ghana Card has denied having any link with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

It is reported that Margins Groups has been contracted to print Ghana cards due to its affiliation with the government, but Chief Executive Officer, Moses Baiden, explained that the company has been in operations for a while, and as such, it has handled several other contracts since 1995.

Speaking to a joint Subsidiary Legislation, Defence and Interior parliamentary committee on March 14, Mr Baiden stressed that the Margins Group was a private business which got their contract by dint of hard work.

“We are the first large-scale National ID project in the world and we designed it right here in Ghana.

“Some months ago some people say that they were an NDC company, they were an NPP party link but actually, the first national ID, 1995… during the Rawlings era, we were the only local company that competed,“ he said.

He also stressed on the number of foreigners registered for Ghana Card.

“So till date we have registered 183,000 foreigners from 216 different nationalities. So, today you can tell how many foreigners are in Ghana from each country, where they live and what they do. We are yet to get the full benefits of the data,” he added.

On the other hand, the Margins Group said it has uncovered thousands of fake national IDs.

It made this discovery after harmonising data from the Ghana Card with other national identity documents including passports, health insurance cards, driver’s licenses, and others.

Madam Kristalina Georgieva was accompanied by the Director of Africa Department at the Fund, Abebie Selassie, Stéphane Roudet, IMF Mission Chief for Ghana and other officials as she expects to hold talks with President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Madam Georgieva will also meet with the Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison.

As part of her itinerary, the IMF boss will on Monday, March 18, 2024, attend an Artificial Intelligence (AI) conference jointly organised by the Ministry of Finance and her organisation, the International Monetary Fund under the theme, “AI as a Catalyst to Transform Economies in Sub-Saharan Africa”.

Madam Georgieva will also be meeting with selected Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and women groups.

In 2023, Ghana secured a $3 billion IMF extended credit facility (ECF) after then Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, was authorized by President Akufo-Addo on July 1, 2022, to commence formal negotiations with the IMF to secure a balance of payment support and resolve Ghana’s economic crisis impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the geopolitical armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Ghana’s three-year-IMF programme is in its first year of implementation, with the nation so far, receiving a total of $1.2 billion from the IMF in two payment tranches of $600 million each.

It is expected that during Madam Georgieva’s stay in Ghana, the IMF and the government officials will be seeking ways through which they can consolidate collaboration to see Ghana through her current programme with the Fund.

IMF, Finance Ministry to host Artificial Intelligence conference in Accra

The Ministry of Finance and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are set to host an Artificial Intelligence (AI) summit in Accra on Monday, March 18, 2024.

The summit aims to explore the challenges and opportunities that AI presents for developing countries like Ghana.

Financial and information technology experts believe that AI has the potential to transform economies in Africa, including Ghana. However, they also acknowledge that AI could pose challenges for economic growth and development in countries south of the Sahara, given the continent’s unique characteristics, including its young population.

While the risk of immediate AI-related disruptions may be lower in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) than in advanced economies, where up to 60% of jobs could be affected, EMDEs are also less equipped to harness the benefits of AI effectively.

The AI summit, themed “AI as a Catalyst to Transform Economies in Sub-Saharan Africa,” will take place at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra. Participants will include Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, Minister for Finance, and Madam Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF.

The summit will feature a panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities of AI for emerging economies, with a focus on Ghana’s digitalization and AI readiness. The discussion will also explore strategies for harnessing AI for positive outcomes and its role in the 4th industrial revolution alongside technologies like cloud computing and the internet.

The panel will include Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister for Communications & Digitalisation; Madam Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF; Dr. Patrick Awuah, President of Ashesi University; and Dr. Jason Hickey, Head of Google’s AI Research Centre.

4 out of 5 submarine cables totally off – Internet Service Providers

In a recent development, a board member of the Internet Service Providers, Daniel Kofi Ansah Akuffo, has highlighted a concerning issue regarding Ghana’s internet connectivity.

He revealed that out of the five submarine cables supplying internet to Ghana, four are currently totally offline.

This revelation came as a shock, especially considering the importance of these cables in maintaining internet connectivity in the country.

“It was a very hectic day for all of us,” said Mr. Ansah Akuffo.

“Ghana is supplied by five submarine cables, and one is currently totally off, and just about yesterday, some other three also went off.

These cables run from South Africa to Europe, and what this means is that we should be looking at our telecommunication infrastructure,” he added.

This development underscores the critical need for Ghana to address its telecommunication infrastructure’s vulnerabilities to prevent such disruptions in the future.

Data services will improve in the coming days – NCA

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has informed Ghanaians to expect some improvement in data services in the coming days while the operators work around the clock to restore full connectivity.

The NCA made this known when it updated the public on the current network crisis that has negatively affected Ghana and other countries.

The Authority on Saturday afternoon held a face-to-face meeting with all four (4) subsea cable landing service providers (ACE, MainOne, SAT-3 and WACS); and the three (3) mobile network operators (AT, MTN and Telecel).

The meeting was attended by the top management of the above providers and operators to receive updates and to discuss the way forward.

The Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and subsea cable landing service providers continue to work with their international partners in the sub-region to progressively add more capacity for data services as it becomes available.

The subsea cable landing service providers have remotely identified the approximate locations of the damage and have made preparations to dispatch repair vessels to the location for physical assessment and restoration.

Based on the above, the subsea cable landing service providers have indicated an estimated time frame of a minimum of five (5) weeks for full service restoration from the time the vessels are dispatched to the various locations.

“The NCA encourages MNOs, Internet Service Providers, and all other providers to actively participate in the operations of the Ghana Internet Exchange (GIX) in order to ensure an efficient local content delivery and a seamless Internet traffic exchange locally, ” the NCA’s statement added.

New developments will be communicated when available, the Authority assured.

Banks’ service delivery affected by internet breakdown – Ghana Association of Banks

The Ghana Association of Banks has informed all bank customers about communication network challenges currently affecting financial institutions.

In a statement signed by the Association’s Chief Executive, John Awuah, it was disclosed that a nationwide internet breakdown has impacted service delivery, especially online banking and services provided through digital channels.

“Information we have received from the National Communication Authority (NCA) and other service providers of the banking industry suggest that there has been service disruption affecting multiple undersea cables responsible for carrying international internet traffic resulting in significant degradation in internet services,” portions of the statement read.

Mr Awuah on behalf of the banks apologised for the inconvenience caused adding that “We will continue to work with our partner internet providers to ensure expedited resolution to normal business and will continue to update you on further developments.”

On Thursday, March 14, mobile network customers observed hours of disruption in internet, data and voice services providers by telecommunication companies in the country.

The difficulty experienced by companies and members of the general public has been attributed to outages on multiple submarines optic fibre cables that come into Ghana.

In a press statement, the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, noted that some of the cables were down while others continued delivering limited capacity.

“This is impacting internet, data and Voice over IP (VolP) services of the members of the Chamber; the Mobile Network Operators and the Data Service Providers to varying degrees. As a result customers and subscribers are currently experiencing service challenges,” the statement noted.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) noted that the internet challenges go beyond Ghana’s border.

In a circular, the NCA indicated that the “disruptions affecting multiple undersea cables responsible for carrying international traffic have occurred in Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire and with some disruptions in Portugal.”

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and NCA have both assured that further investigations are being carried out as well as work to resolve the problems to restore services to customers.

“The inconvenience to customers is deeply regretted” the statement drafted by the Telecommunications Chamber concluded.

  • Taylor-Catterall rematch postponed again

    Taylor-Catterall rematch postponed again

Josh Taylor’s highly anticipated rematch with Jack Catterall has been postponed for a second time.

Taylor, 33, injured his foot in January, leading to the postponement of the March fight to April 27.

However, the Scot has now encountered an eye injury during training, prompting the non-title light-welterweight bout to be rescheduled to May 25 at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.

A Matchroom Boxing statement confirmed: “Josh Taylor has suffered an injury in training and his upcoming fight with Jack Catterall on April 27 has been postponed.

“The fight will now move to May 25 at the same venue in Leeds — live on DAZN.”

Taylor posted on Instagram: “I had a minor eye procedure at the beginning of February. I attended a final check-up yesterday expecting to be signed off by the medical team.

“However, I was told that my recovery had slowed and I was advised to postpone the fight.”

Catterall — who lost their first contest on a controversial split decision in February 2022 — wrote on social media: “Apologies to all the fans. I’ll be there May 25.

“All he’s done is stalled the beating he’s going to get and I promise you all I will rid this guy out of boxing once and for all.”

Scottish southpaw Taylor, known as the Tartan Tornado, had an impeccable professional record before losing his WBO world title to New Yorker Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden last June.

Catterall, 30, also has only one loss to his name, the fight in Glasgow against Taylor, where the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO light-welterweight belts were on the line.

Since then, the Lancashire southpaw has secured unanimous decision victories against both Darragh Foley and Jorge Linares.

At last month’s news conference, promoter Eddie Hearn said: “Careers are on the line in this fight.

“You lose this fight, you’re done. Taylor loses this fight, he’ll never fight again. Catterall loses this fight, what’s he going to do? His world title dreams are finished.

“This is a massive all-British fight, Scotland versus England, the controversy of the first fight, the hatred. This is called Hate Runs Deep. I know hate is a strong word but this is real.”

NPP will lose 2024 election, any other verdict would mean stealing went on – Nyaho-Tamakloe

A statesman and stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has stated that his party has no chance of winning the upcoming December 7, 2024, presidential elections.

He believes that any result other than a change in government would suggest foul play and could lead to serious consequences.

JoyNews journalist Benjamin Akakpo asked whether he “thinks the NPP would lose the election”, during an interview on Thursday, March 14, 2024, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe retorted, “any other result that would come, would be what we’ve termed: ‘The stolen verdict’.”

“And it would bring problems to this country, you have no idea,” he added.

He explained that Ghanaians are unlikely to vote for his party due to the current economic situation in the country. Additionally, he stated that members of the NPP do not support the party’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Bawumia himself is in a tight corner. Tight corner because he is not himself. Secondly, he has been put in a position that is not the wish of majority of the party members. But for the backing of Akufo-Addo with money, Bawumia couldn’t have won that position.

“… and also think about the mess we have created during these 8 years. People are no fools, they are no fools at all,” he said.

The NPP leading member added that his party also has issues in its “Word Bank,” the Ashanti Region, due to the breakaway of the leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, from the party, and the current internal issues it is facing.

Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, is optimistic about the clearance of anti-retroviral drugs that have been held at the port since July 2023.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Health has provided assurances regarding the imminent resolution of this issue.

However, Dr. Atuahene expressed concerns over the potential repercussions if the drugs remain at the port. He emphasized the importance of timely action in clearing the goods to safeguard public health.

In an interview with Citi News, Dr. Atuahene highlighted the Commission’s trust in the Health Ministry’s commitment to adhere to agreed-upon timelines for clearing the drugs.

“We met the Ministry of Health to discuss this matter and we made it clear to them that it is really undermining the credibility and image of Ghana in the eyes of donor partners because all these donations are from the Global Fund, for which we are not paying a penny, and so why do we continue to have this situation on our hands?.

“We put people’s lives at risk by sleeping on the job and I believe they will take the necessary action to ensure that it never occurs again.”

He also emphasized the detrimental impact on Ghana’s reputation with donor partners due to delays in handling these vital donations from the Global Fund.

  • It is not your business if we hang ourselves – Nyaho-Tamakloe slams US Ambassador over anti-LGBTQ bill opposition

Former Ghanaian Ambassador to Serbia and Montenegro, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has accused the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, of interfering in the country’s internal affairs.

Nyaho-Tamakloe criticized Palmer for her recent comments, including threats, regarding the approval of a bill against same-sex activities in Ghana, calling it a direct attack on the nation’s sovereignty.

“We have countries in the Arab world, have they been able to push this down their throats? America at times really surprises me. They talk of democracy and they do the other thing.

“The ambassador here should have left this country long ago… I am telling you; she is interfering in the internal affairs of our country.

“Look at the comments she made, even the threats. This is a sovereign nation. If we choose to hang ourselves tomorrow that is our business not hers. Why should she impose?” he told Joynews in an interview.

Virginia Palmer, the United States Ambassador to Ghana, has reacted to the recently approved anti-LGBTQ Bill by Parliament.

She stated that the prohibition of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activities, as well as the criminalization of their promotion, advocacy, and funding, infringes on human rights.

Virginia Palmer further warned of potential economic and reputational damage to Ghana should the bill be assented into law by the president.

“I am saddened because some of the smartest, most creative, most decent people I know are LGBT. The bill Parliament passed takes away not only their basic human rights but those of all Ghanaians because it undermines their constitutional rights to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom of the press. It will be bad for public order and public health. If enacted, it will also hurt Ghana’s international reputation and Ghana’s economy.” #USAmbPalmer,” she tweeted.

In response to the ambassador’s comment, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe noted that Virginia Palmer’s actions contravened the Vienna Convention. The former diplomat also criticized a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance as irresponsible, warning of significant economic implications should the bill be approved into law.

GFA reappoints Otto Addo as Black Stars head coach

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association has approved the decision of the five-member Black Stars Head Coach search committee to appoint Otto Addo as the next coach of Ghana.

This decision was made following a long but decisive emergency meeting of the Executive Council on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

During the meeting, the Council reviewed the report of the search committee, which was led by Vice President Mark Addo, and further deliberated on the matter.

As a result, the Ghana Football Association has reached an agreement with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund for Otto Addo to be released to take up the coaching position.

Otto Addo will be offered a 34-month contract with an option for a further 24 months.

“Otto was exceptional in the interview process and was rated highly by the search committee, hence the decision,” President Simeon-Okraku told ghanafa.org

“There were some brilliant individuals among the coaches who applied for the job, so the committee took the pain to interview a chunk of them to pick their thoughts on their intentions to transform the team within a short period of time due to our peculiar situation”

“The Committee was overly satisfied with Otto’s performance for which reason he was recommended to the Executive Council for approval,” President Simeon-Okraku added.

Otto will be allowed by Borussia Dortmund to join Ghana for the March international window, after which he will travel back to the club to officially hand over and take up the job permanently in May this year.

In December 2022, Otto Addo revealed the reason behind his decision to leave his position as Coach of the Black Stars, saying the decision is not only in his hands.

“The decision is not only in my hands, before I even started working with the GFA, everybody knew I had a contract with Dortmund and to even come here was very difficult and the GFA put a lot of effort to get me released,” he said in a press briefing in Qatar on Saturday following Ghana’s exit from the World Cup.

“What you have to know is the position I have as a talent coach is very crucial to Dortmund. We produce a lot of big talents. It is a crucial and important position for the club’’.

“Normally they won’t have to let me go but because I want to help the country and the GFA went there and had good talks, they released me for six months,” he added.

Addo won four games during his time with the Black Stars, beating Madagascar and South Korea in competitive games with the other victories coming against Nicaragua and Switzerland in friendlies.

Ghana qualified for the World Cup at the expense of Nigeria on 1-1 aggregate following a goalless draw in Kumasi and 1-1 in Abuja on March 29, 2022.

The Black Stars lost to Brazil and Uruguay and grabbed a 1-1 draw against Central African Republic in the other games under Otto Addo.

Ghana crashed out of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 tournament after finishing bottom of Group H with three points.

The team suffered two defeats to Portugal (3-2) and Uruguay (2-0) and defeated South Korea 3-2 in the other Group match.

  • Be ready to sacrifice your fat allowances when Akufo-Addo signs anti-LGBTQ bill – Obuasi West MP tells colleagues

Be ready to sacrifice your fat allowances when Akufo-Addo signs anti-LGBTQ bill – Obuasi West MP tells colleagues

The Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Kwaku Kwarteng has stressed the importance of financial resilience for Ghana amidst the ongoing tension surrounding the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

Expressing his support for the bill, the Obuasi West MP highlighted the need for behavioral change among lawmakers and citizens.

He called on Members of Parliament to lead by example by sacrificing their privileges, such as hefty allowances, and for companies to fulfill their tax obligations diligently. This, he believes, will bolster Ghana’s fiscal resilience.

“I will be happy if the President signs the bill into law, but it must come with behavioural change. MPs must be willing to sacrifice their fat allowances, and companies who default in paying taxes must religiously pay them otherwise, a time will come when we will go broke and despite claiming to be a sovereign country we will accept what we don’t like,” he said.

He emphasized that Ghana’s sovereignty should not only be defined by debates surrounding LGBTQ+ activities but also by the unity of Ghanaians under a common banner to collectively build and strengthen the nation.

“We realise that we are a sovereign country, and we don’t want people to be telling us what we need to do; that is all right. So let us ride on the back of this LGBTQ+ issue and use the emotion and passion, given that we are a sovereign country wanting to protect our culture. We have these people who have been ‘feeding us’ and are now trying to tell us what to do; we won’t even accept their food anymore.”

On Wednesday, February 28, Parliament unanimously passed the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill after completing the third reading. The bill has been a subject of intense debate and discussion since its introduction to the legislature three years ago.

Proponents argue that it is necessary to uphold cultural and religious values, while opponents argue that certain provisions violate human rights and promote discrimination.

Since its passage, many opponents have expressed their displeasure, with some civil society groups threatening legal action should President Akufo-Addo assent to the bill for it to become law.

President Akufo-Addo has withheld his accent as the constitutionality of the bill is being contested at the Supreme Court.

Provide the people of Bolgatanga an airport – Zebilla MP to govt

Zebilla’s Member of Parliament, Cletus Avoka, has called on the government to prioritize the construction of an airport in Bolgatanga, the capital of the Upper East Region.

Avoka emphasized the need for an airport to address the challenges faced in transferring patients to medical facilities in Greater Accra, which has resulted in loss of lives.

He also highlighted the importance of an airport in facilitating swift medical attention and addressing security concerns, particularly in light of insurgencies in the Sahel and neighboring towns around Bawku.

Speaking to reporters in Parliament on Thursday, March 14, Mr. Avoka outlined the strategic importance of an airport in the Upper East Region.

“We share a border with two countries and because of the security challenges in the Sahel, we need to mobilise troops to Bolgatanga and quickly deploy them to the areas if there is a problem which doesn’t exist in this modern era.

“Somebody is involved in an accident and unless there is a helicopter, which even takes three hours from Accra to Bolgatanga, but if there was a flight, it would have taken just one hour to Korle Bu and we are missing that due to the lack of an airport.”

  • Why Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Benin, others are experiencing internet connectivity challenges

Why Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Benin, others are experiencing internet connectivity challenges

NetBlocks reports that people in West and Central Africa are facing internet connectivity issues, with Ivory Coast being the most severely affected country.

The monitoring group indicates that the companies managing the subsea cables connecting the region to the internet have reported several failures. However, the exact cause of these problems remains unclear, according to Reuters.

NetBlocks further notes that internet connectivity in Ivory Coast is currently operating at only 4% of its expected level. Other countries such as Liberia, Benin, Ghana, and Burkina Faso have also experienced significant disruptions.

In addition, users in South Africa are reporting slow internet speeds, as stated by website News24.

A spokesperson from telecoms company Vodacom mentioned that “multiple subsea cable failures between South Africa and Europe were impacting network providers.”

Akufo-Addo keeps lying to Ghanaians; he is up to no good – Nyaho-Tamakloe

A founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, has openly criticized President Akufo-Addo, accusing him of being a dishonest leader.

The veteran party stalwart made these remarks during an interview on Joynews, where he addressed the recent power outages (dumsor) in the country.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed his dissatisfaction with the government’s response to the power supply crisis, stating that despite efforts to downplay the situation, the reality on the ground speaks otherwise.

He emphasized the need for honesty and transparency from the government regarding the challenges facing the country, particularly in the energy sector.

“That is why I keep on saying that if a leader is not honest with his people he falls into these sorts of traps. This government has not been honest with its people right from the get-go,” he submitted.

Asked if he was accusing the president of being dishonest, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe responded in the affirmative saying “he’s not been honest with the people of this country from day one, even right from the day he was being sworn in.”

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, referencing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s plagiarized speech during his inauguration in 2017 and his prediction of a disastrous era under his leadership, emphasized that the signs of trouble were evident from the outset.

“Of course yes, that should have alarmed us. Even though I warned Ghanaians before that they shouldn’t vote him in, that should have alarmed Ghanaians…” he stated.

Recent frequent power outages across the country have sparked a debate on whether Ghana is experiencing a return to the days of scheduled power rationing, commonly known as “dumsor,” which was prevalent between 2014 and 2016.

13th African Games volunteers being asked to buy their own prepaid – Reports

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has provided information that indicates that volunteers for the 13th African Games have been directed to purchase their own electricity for the interim as authorities work to refund monies used.

This comes after over 100 volunteers have been forced to sleep in darkness for over four days in their residences due to finished prepaids.

In a Facebook post, Mr Ablakwa shared a WhatsApp conversation between one John (believed to be the medium between the authorities and the volunteers) and volunteers.

As remedy, the volunteers have been directed to purchase their own electricity for the interim

“Please how far with those with finish prepaid credits, some volunteers have been without lights for the past 4 days,” a concerned volunteer wrote.

John replied: “Team, unfortunately, we’re still awaiting funds for electricity. If possible, please purchase small amounts for your rooms. We’re working on securing the funds, but will alert you when we get some funds. Your patience is appreciated.

According to Mr Ablakwa, it is unacceptable to claim everything is working out smoothly with regards to the tournament, as done by the Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, when volunteers are struggling.

“As Ghana’s Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif goes about bragging that he’s organized the best African Games, hundreds of his volunteers are without prepaid credits and have been sleeping in darkness at the games for more than 4 days,” he said.

He expressed concern that “a US$243million tournament is unable to pay for prepaid credits, and yet the Minister is demanding praise.”

“I reiterate that Ghana’s hosting of the 13th African Games is the next big scandal. We shall delve into the multiple scandals soon,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif has expressed disapproval of the media’s focus on the negative aspects of Ghana’s hosting of the 2023 African Games. Instead, he encourages highlighting the positive elements of the event.

During a press conference at the University of Ghana Stadium, Mr Ussif argued that Ghana has garnered international acclaim for organizing “spectacular games.”

We are negotiating with ECG on unpaid debt – Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health has noted it has commenced negotiations with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over the outstanding monies owed by 91 hospitals.

Cumulatively, these health institutions owe GH¢261 million to the power distribution company, prompting urgent efforts to address the situation.

According to the ECG, it will disconnect power to these health facilities in less 72 hours should the debt not be paid.

Public Relations Officer for the Health Ministry, Isaac Offei Baah, noted that the government is working to ensure that these hospitals have access to electricity to meet the healthcare needs of citizens.

“We owe the Electricity Company of Ghana. We serve the Electricity Company of Ghana. The Electricity Company of Ghana demands their money, that we should pay them for them to avoid this connection. We sit down at a table. We are negotiating. We would be able to meet ECG and solve this problem with them.”

“So we go to a negotiating table. Now, there is going to be another form of reconciliation to look at the total debt owed, whether it is feasible or we have some miscarriage in there. But then, whichever way, and granted that this is the total amount that we owe the Electricity Company of Ghana, we are going to negotiate with them,” he said.

Don’t allow Police prosecutors to handle cases worth over GHC500k – Chief Justice tells judges

Police prosecutors can no longer handle cases that exceed GHC500,000 following a directive by Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, to all judges.

The Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo issued the directive in response to a letter from the Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, indicating that police prosecutors are now restricted from prosecuting cases worth any amount exceeding the aforementioned.

“I write with reference to the attached letter from the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice dated 7th February 2024 on the above-mentioned subject.”

“The Attorney-General is by the said letter notifying the Service that, Police Prosecutors have been directed to prosecute cases with monetary value not exceeding the amount of GH4500,000.00.

Any case with a monetary value above this limit will now be referred to the Office of the Attorney-General for study and advice.

Concerned about instances where lower court judges were unaware of these limits, the Director of Public Prosecutions informed the Attorney-General, prompting the issuance of this directive to ensure compliance among judges.

Following this directive, the Chief Justice duly informed judges to take note and strictly adhere to it.

  • ECG picking on hospitals when others owe more – GMA over power disconnection

ECG picking on hospitals when others owe more – GMA over power disconnection

General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Richard Selormey, has accused Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) of being biased in retrieving money owed to it by various institutions.

The ECG on Wednesday, March 13, issued a notice to 91 hospitals in various parts of the country threatening to disconnect them from the national grid should they fail to settle their debt within 72 hours.

Among the notable hospitals facing potential disconnection are the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the 37 Military Hospital, Ridge Hospital in the Greater Accra region, Komfo Anokye and Manhyia Government Hospitals in the Ashanti region, Ho Teaching Hospital in the Volta region, and Kyebi Government Hospital in the Eastern region.

He noted that the debt owed by the health institutions amounts to just 4.5% of ECG’s total debt, however, ECG has left other agencies to pursue those in the health sector.

He therefore requested that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) go ahead with its threat to take 91 hospitals off the national grid over outstanding bills.

According to Dr Selormey that is the only step the power provider can take since its 72-hour ultimatum for payment of GH¢261 million is unrealistic.

“Why do you want to suck from the healthcare when bigger chunks are waiting?” the General Secretary quizzed.

“ECG needs to be realistic, the health facilities cannot pay the debt within the three-day ultimatum they have been given, and if they are actually going to disconnect, then they would have to disconnect all the facilities and we will all sit and watch what the government does,” he said on JoyNews.

He also noted that the average Ghanaian in need of healthcare will bear the brunt should the hospitals be unable to operate efficiently due to the absence of electricity.

Dr Selormey warned that if ECG proceeds with disconnections at these health facilities, it would have significant repercussions for patient care.

Dr Selormey, thus called on ECG to engage in further discussions with all stakeholders, urging the company to reconsider its ultimatum.

“The 72 hours, I think it is unreasonable and won’t be adhered to by anybody,” he said on Wednesday.

We can’t pay GHC261m in 72 hours, if you like disconnect our power! – GMA ‘dares’ ECG

General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Richard Selormey, has requested that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) go ahead with its threat to take 91 hospitals off the national grid over outstanding bills.

According to Dr Selormey, that is the only step the power provider can take since its 72-hour ultimatum for payment of GH¢261 million is unrealistic.

He also criticised the ECG for being selective in its pursuit to get institutions indebted to the company to pay what they owe. He noted that the debt owed by the health institutions amounts to just 4.5% of ECG’s total debt.

“The 72 hours, I think it is unreasonable and won’t be adhered to by anybody,” he said on Wednesday.

The ECG on Wednesday March 13, issued a notice to 91 hospitals in various parts of the country threatening to disconnect them from the national grid should they fail to settle their debt within 72 hours.

“Our toes are full of blisters” – Ghana’s beach volleyball players lament lack of protective socks

Following their elimination in the quarter-finals, Ghana’s beach volleyball players are now tending to blisters incurred from competing in the scorching hot sand without protective sand socks.

Ghana experienced defeats in their quarter-final matches against Morocco and Mozambique in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.

Speaking to JoySports after Wednesday’s loss to Morocco, Ajanako said: “All our toes are full of blisters because of the heat of the sand. That can also affect you.

“We didn’t get the sand socks to wear because they told us there’s a shipment coming and it has been delayed.”

Corporal Juliana Aryee, a member of the women’s team, corroborated Ajanako’s statements.

“We requested for all those material; shades, sand socks and training apparels, but unfortunately, we didn’t get them.”

Although sand socks and other items were not provided due to shipment delays, the Sports Ministry and the Federation managed to supply the team with jerseys and sunglasses.

Ajanako, who has been competing for Ghana since 2007, expressed appreciation for the efforts to provide professional support services but noted that they should have been included in the team’s preparations.

“Everything is well in the (Games) Village. But that should’ve been the case in camp before the games.”

“The massage therapists, the nutritionists, and others should have been with us (from the beginning),” he concluded.

Finance Ministry’s internal memo on anti-LGBTQ bill was leaked – Abena Osei-Asare

Minister of State-designate for Finance, Abena Osei-Asare, has clarified that the widely circulated document on the cost of signing the anti-LGBTQI bill to the President was leaked.

The document, originating from the Finance Ministry, warned that Ghana could lose an estimated $3.8 billion over the next five to six years should President Akufo-Addo sign the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

Days after the bill was passed, the Ministry outlined the negative implications of the document on its expenditure, key government plans, and projects, urging President Akufo-Addo to hold off on signing the bill into law as it may cost the country greatly.

However, appearing before the appointment committee, Osei-Asare stated that the document was an internal memo that got leaked to the public and was also not an advice to the President.

“We heard certain sentiments from certain stakeholders so what we sought to do was to see how best we can address any revenue gap issue should they arise as a result of the passage of the bill. It was an internal memo. It wasn’t a memo that was to be sent outside because we were sitting to see how best we could close the gap,” she explained on Wednesday, March 13.

The Finance Ministry faced criticism from Minority MPs over this memo to the President.

Meanwhile, Abena Osei-Asare has stated that the government has no intention of reintroducing road tolls in 2024.

“The document that spells out the vision for the government in 2024 is the budget. So we are working with the budget and in the budget for 2024, I don’t think we introduced any lime item for road tolls and so it remains as such.”

On the country’s economic standings, the Minister-designate revealed that Ghana’s public debt is GHs621 billion as of December 2023.

Handling of National Cathedral project not the best, could have been better – Abena Osei-Asare

Abena Osei-Asare, the Minister of State-Designate for Finance, has acknowledged that there were areas in the management of the National Cathedral project that could have been handled more effectively.

During her vetting on Wednesday, March 13, Mrs. Osei-Asare conceded that improvements could have been made in overseeing the project.

She stressed the importance of the Board of Trustees in fundraising to support the project’s completion, noting that while the government has made its contribution, it’s now imperative for the trustees to fulfil their role in advancing the project.

“Mr. Chairman, I think we could have gone over it better than what we have done, that I must admit because, for me, it’s a very personal issue because I’m a Christian.”

“Mr Chairman, the National Cathedral is also made up of trustees and these trustees are also supposed to, they are there to raise monies to help complete the project. Government has contributed its seed fund and I believe that now is also up to the trustees to also do their part to make sure we realize this dream,” she said.

The National Cathedral project has faced significant public criticism, particularly regarding transparency issues related to its financing and construction progress.

Originally scheduled for commissioning on March 6, the National Cathedral has come under scrutiny, especially from minority MPs, who have raised concerns about its expenditure and the lack of transparency in fund allocation.

You are a fake Apostle! – Captain Smart to Lilian Kumah

In a recent development surrounding the death of Deputy Finance Minister and Ejisu MP, John Kumah, broadcast journalist Blessed Godsbrain Smart, known as Captain Smart, has publicly criticized Apostle Lilian Kumah, the late minister’s wife, questioning her credibility as a religious leader.

Captain Smart, who works with Onua TV and FM, accused Apostle Lilian Kumah of being insincere and deceptive.

He advised her to remain silent and focus on mourning her husband rather than making misleading statements.

In a video circulating online, he said, “Dear woman, please keep mute and bury your husband. It is not nice. When I called certain people I realized that you don’t speak the truth. You are a fake Apostle. The person who gave you that title has done a disservice to Ghana.

In response to claims made by Apostle Lilian Kumah that her husband did not die from food poisoning but rather from a terminal illness he had been battling for over a year, Captain Smart expressed skepticism.

He questioned the timing of the illness in relation to the couple’s marriage, suggesting that there may be discrepancies in her account.

Apostle Lilian Kumah clarified during an interview on Asaase radio that her late husband had been diagnosed with a terminal illness by doctors in Germany almost a year ago, refuting claims of food poisoning as the cause of his death.

The controversy surrounding John Kumah’s death, announced on March 7, 2024, continues to unfold.

  • If you dare me, I will expose you with serious videos! -Captain Smart warns Sefa Kayi, others

Broadcast journalist Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has threatened to publish some videos that show the corrupt nature of some journalists whom he says side with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a video gone viral, he challenged the host of Peace FM’s Kokrokroo show, Kwame Sefa Kayi and others, whom he says belong to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), criticizing them for what he perceived as seeking positions and favors through corrupt means.

“You NPP dogs, you are going round begging for positions. I was given a deputy minister position and I rejected it. I was given Chieftaincy and I said I didn’t want it. Ask Frema Opare. I was given a Land Cruiser, but I didn’t want it. You are in this country seeking positions and cars,” he said.

He alleged that some of these individuals have engaged in immoral acts and also deal in drugs. According to Captain Smart, he has evidence to bring these politicians down.

“My Board Chair has not slept with a lady in the garage and had to GHC100,000. My CEO does not deal in cocaine.

“Bring it on. The videos I will be playing. The videos I will leak, you will clap for me. Why do you think David went up against Goliath. Just one stone,” he added.

Prior to this, Kwame Sefa Kayi, a respected journalist and media personality, challenged broadcaster Captain Smart’s assertion that John Kumah, the Deputy Finance Minister, was poisoned.

Sefa Kayi questioned the basis for such a claim, emphasizing the need for concrete evidence before making such serious allegations.

“Now we are asking, you that said he died due to poisoning, bring the evidence. Where will you bring it,” he said on the Kokrokoo show.

The Ejisu Member of Parliament, Dr John Kumah, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024. Since news broke, there have been contradictory reports on the cause of his death.

Captain Smart caught ‘red handed’ over scientific name for salt

During a recent episode of his show “Maakye” on Onua TV, broadcast journalist Blessed Godsbrain Smart, known as Captain Smart, made a statement regarding the scientific name of salt that has been proven incorrect.

Captain Smart asserted that the scientific name of salt is sodium carbon oxide, stating that this composition means that salt cannot be lethal. He further explained that when salt is mixed with other substances, it changes color.

“What is salt’s scientific name in chemistry? It is sodium carbon oxide. Hence salt cannot kill. When you look at the composition of salt, when you add anything quickly to salt, it changes colour,” he said.

However, research and feedback from viewers have contradicted Captain Smart’s claim. The correct scientific name for salt is sodium chloride, not sodium carbon oxide.

Sodium chloride is a compound composed of sodium and chlorine ions and is commonly used in various applications, including food seasoning and preservation.

I don’t take bribes, I was offered a car, Chieftaincy Deputy Minister role and I rejected them – Captain Smart

In a bold declaration against corruption, broadcast journalist Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has revealed that he has refused offers of bribes, including a ministerial position and cash.

In a video gone viral, Captain Smart passionately stated, “I am unbeatable. I don’t take bribes. I hate bribes.”

He went on to recount instances where he was allegedly approached with bribes, including offers of a deputy ministerial position and a chieftaincy title, all of which he staunchly declined.

In a direct challenge to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Captain Smart criticized individuals within the party for what he perceived as seeking positions and favors through corrupt means.

In February 2023, Captain Smart emphasized his unwavering stance against bribery and corruption.

“I told you the African Games was going to be postponed and the social media landguards came to insult me. You people say I criticise the government because I want to be induced. No! Let me tell you today, I don’t need anything from this government. I was offered a deputy ministerial appointment and I rejected. After that they said, okay, let’s give you the minister of Chieftaincy and Culture and I rejected that as well. If you meet Nana Addo, ask him. That’s why when you go to cabinet meeting, Nana Addo tells you not to mind me because I don’t want anything. If you meet Napo, ask him. Those of you who say I want a car, wouldn’t I have gotten a car as a minister?” he quizzed.

Transport Minister summoned by Parliament over $30 charge by GACL for trips

Parliament has summoned Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah to appear before the House on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, to address concerns raised by the Minority Caucus regarding unlawful charges imposed by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

The charges include a $20 maintenance fee for all round trips and a $10 charge for one-way trips.

Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu alleged collusion between the Ghana Airports Company Limited and the Transport Minister regarding these charges, prompting the summons to seek clarification on the authority behind the fees.

“What authority does the Ghana Airport Company have to impose fees and charges and are these charges consistent with the Fees and Charges Act approved by the Parliament of Ghana? Mr. Speaker, I think the Transport Minister must be hauled to Parliament to explain the authority with which they are charging the fees and whether it is consistent with our Fees and Charges Act.”

Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Amoako Asiamah also expressed concerns over the charges and directed the Minister to appear before the House to address the issue.

“With regards to this issue, I am directing the Transport Minister to appear before this House on March 19 to come and address this issue because the airport company cannot sit by themselves and say they are charging fees on their own and so the Transport Minister must appear to answer to these issues.”

GACL introduces $20 maintenance charge on all round trips, $10 for one-way trips
