My gov’t will provide tax amnesty to businesses – Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has noted that his government will implement a policy where the government grants forgiveness or relief from tax penalties to businesses.

This will allow businesses to settle their outstanding tax liabilities without facing additional penalties or legal consequences.

“Government will provide a tax amnesty (i.e., a complete exemption from the payment of taxes for a specified period and the waiving of interest and penalties) up to a certain year to individuals and businesses for failures to file taxes in previous years so that everyone will start afresh,” he said.

The NPP flagbearer made this known when he announced that if elected president in the 2024 elections, he will introduce a flat tax regime for the collection of taxes.

According to him, the flat tax of percent of income for individuals and SMEs (which constitute 98% of all businesses in Ghana) will have appropriate exemption thresholds set to protect the poor.

“With the new tax regime, the tax return should be able to be completed in minutes! We will also simplify our complicated corporate tax system and VAT regime,” he said.

Addressing the nation on his vision for Ghana while speaking at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra today, he stressed that there is a need to reform and refocus the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) towards broadening the tax base.

“Unfortunately, the pressure that is placed on GRA staff to collect revenues makes them focus on existing tax payers. Sometimes they even have to go to sit in peoples shops to monitor sales (a process known as invigilation).

In fact, many businesses feel harassed by this process and the constant audits of their operations. This has to stop. We must strike the right balance between collecting revenue and allowing businesses to thrive,” he added.

He indicated that, per estimates, revenues amounting to 13% of GDP (or $24 billion in 2023) were not collected because people are outside the tax net.

He is therefore optimistic that a flat-rate regime will solve these challenges.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has noted that to generate more revenue for the government, his administration, if elected president in the 2024 elections, will introduce a flat tax regime for the collection of taxes.

According to him, the flat tax of percent of income for individuals and SMEs (which constitute 98% of all businesses in Ghana) will have appropriate exemption thresholds set to protect the poor.

To start the new tax system on a clean slate, the Vice President noted that the government will provide a tax amnesty (i.e., a complete exemption from the payment of taxes for a specified period and the waiving of interest and penalties) up to a certain year to individuals and businesses for failures to file taxes in previous years so that everyone will start afresh.

  • We have constructed more roads than any other gov’t since 1992 – Bawumia

We have constructed more roads than any other gov’t since 1992 – Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia made a bold assertion regarding the government’s achievements in infrastructure development during his address at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra today.

He declared that the current administration had surpassed all previous governments since 1992 in terms of road construction and rehabilitation.

According to data from the Ministry of Roads and Highways, over 11,674 kilometers of roads have been constructed or rehabilitated under the government’s tenure.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that this massive investment in road infrastructure sets a new benchmark in Ghana’s development history.

“We have undertaken a major road construction and rehabilitation programme across the country. Over 11,674km of roads, according to data from the Ministry of Roads and Highways. I am not aware of any government that has done as much in the road sector since 1992.

“We have initiated and overseen the construction and rehabilitation of more railways than any government since 1992,” he said.

He announced that government will soon outdoor its performance tracker which details all of the government’s achievements in every sector and district in Ghana.

In March 2023, President Akufo-Addo made the same statement about his government’s achievement in constructing roads.

In his State of the Nation address delivered on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, in Parliament, President Akufo-Addo said the majority of monies borrowed by his administration had been put towards the construction of roads.

“Mr Speaker, I am proud of the amount of work that we have done, especially in the road sector. Roads constitute the largest number of questions asked in this House by Members of Parliament; a large amount of the monies we borrow are for road construction. Shall we dare stop constructing roads?,” he said.

“Mr Speaker, I would like to state categorically that this Government has built more roads than any government in the history of the 4th Republic, and Mr. Speaker, the details of all these roads are attached in the annex to this message. I have done so because, last year, when I made a similar pronouncement, I was met with howls and gasps of incredulity from the Minority benches, and so I thought it’s appropriate, this time, to present it as an annex to the statement, which will be part of Hansard.”

In response, the Minority Caucus in Parliament described as erroneous and misrepresentation claims by President Akufo-Addo to have built more roads than any other government under the Fourth Republic.

  • Bawumia ‘confesses’ to the economic mess

Bawumia ‘confesses’ to the economic mess

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made a candid acknowledgment of the economic challenges that have plagued Ghana in recent years.

Speaking at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra, he openly confessed to the hardships faced by Ghanaians across various sectors.

Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the struggles experienced by citizens, including rising food prices, increased exchange rate depreciation, escalating fuel costs, and higher transport fares.

He also highlighted the adverse impact on bond holders, who witnessed a significant decline in their net worth due to the painful debt restructuring program.

“Indeed, Ghanaians were hit by rising food prices, increased exchange rate depreciation, rising fuel prices, and rising transport fares. Bond holders also saw a sharp decline in their net worth following the painful debt restructuring programme.”

“We faced very challenging times,” he added.

The Vice President’s admission underscores the gravity of the economic crisis and the severity of its effects on the populace.

It reflects a recognition of the challenges faced by ordinary Ghanaians and the need for decisive action to address these issues.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says Ghana is on a recovery path following such decisive decisions taken by the government.

I have always seen Bawumia as a man of destiny – Former Pres. Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has stated that Vice President and flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is destined for greatness.

Speaking at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra for the Vice President’s address to the nation, the former President noted that he had seen the greatness of Dr Bawumia as far back as 2002, when he was president.

“I have always seen him as a man of destiny,” he said.

Recounting his first experience with Dr Bawumia, he noted that he was mesmerized by the output of the Vice President who was then a Research Assistant to the Bank of Ghana Governor.

In London, Dr Bawumia presented an address to some big men in the financial industry and according to former President Kufuor, “there was something in his statement and about him. I was President of Ghana then. Till then I hadn’t even spoken with him before.”

“But I sent somebody, go and call me that young man. He came, I congratulated him and I don’t know what came in me, prophetically, I told him carry on like that and you’d go far.”

According to the former President, he was not surprised that President Akufo-Addo in 2008 picked him as his running mate for the 2008 general elections.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is addressing Ghanaians in a live streamed event today, February 7, 2024.

The speech, delivered from the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra, has garnered significant attention from across the country.

The theme for the speech is Ghana’s Next Chapter: Selfless Leadership And Bold Solutions For the Future.

Citizens expect the Vice President in this address to outline his plans and vision for the country under his potential leadership as the President of Ghana.

  • Parliament is ready to counter Akufo-Addo’s rejection of anti-LGBTQ+ bill – Minority

Parliament is ready to counter Akufo-Addo’s rejection of anti-LGBTQ+ bill – Minority

Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has communicated Parliament’s readiness to override President Akufo-Addo’s potential veto of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

Dr Ato Forson emphasized Parliament’s dedication to fulfilling its duties regardless of any unconstitutional actions taken by President Akufo-Addo.

President Akufo-Addo has rejected three bills passed by the House last year, citing their status as private members’ bills and their impact on the Consolidated Fund.

The anti-LGBTQ+ bill, also classified as a private members’ bill, includes provisions that incur charges on the consolidated fund.

During a media briefing on Wednesday, February 7, Dr. Ato Forson clarified that if the President opts not to sign the bill into law, Parliament retains the power to override his decision through a two-thirds majority vote.

“There are rumours out there that after passage, the president did not sign it into law. However, the constitution envisioned this, and it said the house will have to use a certain approach which is the house using the two-thirds majority of members to approve it.”

“So let us deal with the first hurdle and get it passed and then send it to the President and if he fails to assent, we will take a decision,” he said.

However, during the same briefing, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also indicated that Parliament will persist in discussions regarding the constitutional concerns raised about the bill.

Meanwhile, Parliament has approved an amendment to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which imposes up to six months of a custodial sentence on individuals who aid, facilitate, encourage, or promote LGBTQ activities.

The amendment, proposed by co-sponsor of the bill Sam George, aims to ensure strict compliance with the law once passed.

Under the amended bill, those found guilty of promoting LGBTQ activities will face a minimum sentence of three months and a maximum of six months, or a fine ranging from GH₵600 to GH₵1200.

Speaking in Parliament, Sam George said that, “for me, even the GH¢600 is a bargain because it aims to prevent lengthy custodial sentences.

“However, judges retain the discretion to impose fines, imprisonment, or both. Therefore, I believe that GH₵600 to GH₵1200, or a minimum of three months and a maximum of six months, serves as an adequate deterrent.”

However, Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin opposes the amendment, advocating for a custodial sentence of no more than three months.

He argued that imprisonment not only incurs state costs, but there have been studies that show that people go to prison and become worse off after their release.

Also addressing Parliament, Mr Afenyo-Markin noted, “we should rather look at one month and three months, instead of three months and six months. Yes, if the commensurate penalty unit cannot be defined within the context of the proposal which is two months and four months, then we should not go higher.”

On fine, he added “the court has a position on sentencing. It’s the reason why we now have introduced this plea bargain thing. The plea bargain in law that we have enacted is also aimed at dealing with some of these things.”

“In even serious criminal matters if the person is ready to pay to deal with the issue of the time for the trial and all, and also depopulate our prisons,” he said they are allowed the option of fine.

Cheddar pledges regional industrial revolution if elected President

Leader of the New Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, has emphasized his commitment to the advancement of the Ghanaian economy and shared insights into his vision for national development.

He made this known when he visited the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Tuesday to outline his vision and goals for the country.

“We have realised that politicians work so hard to be elected for whatever next election that is coming so they can become president, but a leader’s priority is to build a nation or a generation, and that is my priority,” said Nana Kwame Bediako.

“These are my core interests. These are what I stand for. And I know that most of you have been promised based on political campaigns. I like to say to Ghana that I don’t make promises, but one thing I can assure this nation is that I have a purpose that will benefit the citizens of this nation,” he indicated.

Cheddar outlined his ambitious plans for his presidency, stating that his initial focus would be on spearheading a regional industrial revolution across all 16 regions of the country.

“From where I sit in the business world, the only city that is fully active and economically viable is Accra. So there are 15 regions that we can develop,” the New Force leader said.

“Every region in this country is supposed to have a purpose and to have access to its resources, both human and mineral resources,” he said, adding, “I am not saying that current and past governments have not thought of this, but it has not been done in a way that we can say that we have 15 viable regions that are contributing to our economy.”

He emphasized that this policy would ensure that each region could harness its human and natural resources effectively, directing them towards its own development objectives.

Limit outdoor activities; harmattan has intensified – EPA to public

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a public advisory urging caution amidst the ongoing harmattan season.

In light of increased dust levels observed at the University of Ghana’s monitoring station, the EPA advises limiting outdoor activities to the barest minimum.

Especially vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, individuals with asthma or allergies, and those with underlying health conditions, are strongly encouraged to minimize outdoor exposure where possible.

Additionally, the EPA recommends taking precautionary measures, including the use of pollution masks when necessary, refraining from open burning, and sprinkling water on dusty surfaces before sweeping to reduce dust emissions.

“Monitoring results from January 26 to date indicates an Air Quality Index (AQI) between unhealthy (Red) and very unhealthy (purple). This corroborates the Ghana Meteorological Agency’s Harmattan Advisory Update III 2023/2024 which indicates that the harmattan season has intensified,” the statement said.

Furthermore, all vehicle users are urged to reduce speeding on untarred roads to mitigate dust emissions and ensure public safety. The EPA emphasizes the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding health and well-being during the harmattan period.

  • “I don’t hate anyone!” – Kurt Okraku refutes tension between Chris Hughton

“I don’t hate anyone!” – Kurt Okraku refutes tension between Chris Hughton

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has vehemently refuted rumors suggesting that he harbored animosity towards former Black Stars coach Chris Hughton.

Mr Okraku clarified that his primary focus is the success of the team, and he does not harbor personal biases or preferences when it comes to selecting coaches.

“I don’t hate anyone! I want to be successful. I demand performance from coaches, I want to see a team perform well and win games. This is what I demand from every coach that works for us!” Mr Okraku emphasised this at a press conference in Kumasi.

After Ghana’s disappointing performance at the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast, Hughton was relieved of his duties as coach.

The team’s inability to secure any wins resulted in their early elimination from the competition.

During Hughton’s tenure, Ghana’s performance left much to be desired, with only four wins, four draws, and five losses recorded.

With a win-loss-draw ratio of 30.77%, 30.77%, and 38.46%, respectively, the team struggled to maintain consistency on the field.

In the wake of Hughton’s departure, the GFA has initiated a search for a new coach, receiving an overwhelming response of over 600 applicants.

Despite rumors of personal disagreements, GFA President Okraku has refuted any animosity towards Hughton, indicating that the decision to part ways was solely based on the team’s underwhelming performance.

Moving forward, Okraku is dedicated to finding a capable replacement who can guide the team to success.

We want Ghana to win World Cup, AFCON – GFA

Amidst scrutiny over the recent performance of the Black Stars and their inability to progress beyond the group stages in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has reiterated his outfit’s dedication to leaving a significant impact on Ghanaian football.

Speaking at a press conference held in Kumasi on Wednesday, Okraku stressed his determination to secure victories in major international competitions such as the AFCON and the FIFA World Cup, highlighting his commitment to elevating the stature of Ghanaian football on the global stage.

“I want to win the AFCON; I want to win the World Cup!” Okraku declared. “I want to win every competition Ghana finds itself. This is the collective belief and mindset of my fellow Executive Council members.”

Mr Okraku’s statement resonates with his previous commitments to overhaul Ghanaian football and position the nation as a dominant force in African soccer.

Nevertheless, his term as GFA President has encountered controversy, including accusations of corruption and administrative lapses within the organization.

Despite these hurdles, Okraku maintains a positive outlook on the trajectory of Ghanaian football. He points to the nation’s legacy of nurturing gifted athletes and the ongoing enhancements to the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence as signs of advancement in the sport.

“I want to position the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence very well and make it an enviable international standard,” he said.

  • “This is hypocrisy” – Pope Francis tells critics of LGBTQ blessings

“This is hypocrisy” – Pope Francis tells critics of LGBTQ blessings

Pope Francis has responded to criticism of his decision to allow priests to bless same-sex couples, labeling the opposition as “hypocrisy.”

The authorization of blessings for LGBT couples was granted last month through a Vatican document named Fiducia Supplicans (Supplicating Trust).

However, this decision has faced significant pushback within the Catholic Church, especially from African bishops.

“Nobody gets scandalised if I give my blessings to a businessman who perhaps exploits people, and this is a very grave sin. But they get scandalised if I give them to a homosexual,” Francis told Italian Catholic magazine Credere.

    “This is hypocrisy,” he said.

Credere released excerpts of the interview on Wednesday, one day before its scheduled publication date.

Additionally, Francis affirmed that he “always” extends a welcome to LGBT individuals and remarried divorcees for the sacrament of confession, as reported by another passage published by Vatican media.

“No one should be denied a blessing. Everyone, everyone, everyone” the pontiff said, repeating a three-word slogan he used in August during a Catholic youth festival in Portugal.

At the outset of his papacy, Francis famously remarked “Who am I to judge?” when questioned about homosexuality, signaling his intention to foster a more inclusive and compassionate Catholic Church.

Making the Church more welcoming and less judgmental has become one of Francis’s key objectives, despite facing criticism from conservatives who argue that this approach risks diluting the Church’s moral teachings.

Francis has consistently defended the Vatican document Fiducia Supplicans, which authorized blessings for same-sex couples, while acknowledging the resistance it has encountered. He has emphasized the importance of priests considering local sensitivities when administering these blessings.

Furthermore, Francis has clarified that these blessings do not signify formal Church approval for same-sex unions, seeking to address concerns within the Church about maintaining doctrinal integrity.

“When a couple comes forward spontaneously to ask for them, one does not bless the union, but simply the people who together have requested it. Not the union, but the persons,” Francis said on Jan. 26.

The Catholic Church maintains that homosexual acts are considered sinful and disordered, while individuals with same-sex attractions, which are not deemed sinful, are encouraged to pursue chastity.

In a recent interview published by Italy’s La Stampa daily, Francis expressed hope that critics of LGBT blessings would eventually come to understand them. However, he acknowledged that opposition to homosexuality, particularly prevalent in Africa, posed a unique challenge.

Bishops in Africa have largely rejected the Vatican document Fiducia Supplicans, arguing that its application could lead to scandal. Both Pope Francis and Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, the head of the Vatican’s doctrinal department, have acknowledged the validity of this stance.

In some African nations, homosexuality is met with severe punishment, including imprisonment or even the death penalty, underscoring the significant cultural and legal barriers facing LGBT individuals in certain regions.

Nigerian superstar Davido has offered intriguing insights into the cultural differences between Ghana and Nigeria, shedding light on why many prefer the former over the latter.

Drawing parallels between the two West African nations and iconic American states, Davido likened Nigeria to New York and Ghana to California.

He highlighted Ghana’s charm, describing it as a preferred destination for those seeking a more serene and laid-back atmosphere, along with ample vacation opportunities.

“People tend to go to Ghana more because there are fewer people and space. There is more vacation,” Davido remarked in an interview.

However, Davido also acknowledged Nigeria’s unique dynamic, which offers a blend of both positive and negative aspects.

“But if you are trying to eat everything in one; you want to see the bad part, great part, and everything. Go to Lagos. Everything is in that Lagos,” he added.

The radio station, owned by businessman Ohene Kwame Frimpong, who recently announced his candidacy as an independent parliamentary candidate, was shut down for failing to renew its authorization, according to the NCA.

Reports suggest that security officers raided the station on Tuesday, disconnecting equipment to enforce the shutdown.

The station’s owner, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, had reportedly organized a health walk in Agogo on Sunday, February 4, 2024.

The law on tithe has changed because Hebrews 7 has amended Malachi – Pastor Abel Damina

Leader of Abel Damina Ministries International, Pastor Abel Damina, believes there has been a change in the interpretation or application of the biblical law regarding tithing.

In an interview with Host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV, he admitted to preaching to people to bring their tithe “radically”. I asked people to pay their tithe.

When asked by Mr Adom-Octhere whether he received complaints from his congregants about paying their title and not seeing results, he said “some of them, me inclusive.”

“I was paying my title and wasn’t seeing results.”

He sought the context of results and Mr Adom-Otchere explained that it focuses on “opening the doors of heaven and pour out blessing to you.”

The pastor replied, “99 percent tithes have rooms in their houses that have not been filled and are overflowing like Malachi promised.”

He noted that Malachi’s comments on tithe were not addressed to believers but to priests who were collecting tithe and not paying tithe.

“So Malachi said to those pastors, you have robbed me. People pay you tithe but you are not tithing tithe. The priests were to pay tithe to senior priests. In the law of Moses, yes. So Malachi three was to levites not tithing and not believers,” he said.

Mr Adom-Otchere drew attention to the fact that believers were paying tithe to the Levites.

“You already have found that believers were tithing. You said believers tithe to priests and the priests were not tithing. So the Bible had recognized the believer’s tithing and the believers were tithing according to the law. Has that law changed?” he asked.

“The law has changed”, Pastor Damian answered.

“Hebrews 7 changed Malachi. It says because the is a change of the law, there is also a change of the priesthood,” he added.

He earlier indicated that during his youthful days, he relied solely on the teachings he received from others without verifying the information independently while preaching on tithe.

He admitted to a lack of critical thinking about the beliefs and doctrines he shared with others while preaching.

“When I came into the Ministry. I came into the Ministry learning from those ahead of me. So whatever they taught, I taught. Whatever they did, I did. As a young pastor growing, I didn’t check the Bible got myself. I just copied from what I saw them do. I read the Bible but not to the lenses I was supposed to read with. Because all I knew was all I was taught but I grew in Ministry and I began to check somethings.”

Agordzo disclosed that his human rights were violated when he was stripped naked on the night of his arrest.

Additionally, he shared that during his five-day detention in NIB custody, he refused to eat any food provided to him because he did not trust the authorities.

“I had to take off everything that I was wearing. They gave us some boxer shorts which were just dumped somewhere. I’m wondering whether they were even washed. I will say that the officers who handled me did their best.

“But that’s how they ought to act, and therefore they had to strip me and ensure that they collected everything from me. I was stripped naked and was not wearing anything. That night, my human rights were violated in several respects. You cannot treat me in that manner and just give me anything to wear,” he recounted in an interview on Accra-based Citi TV.

Despite enduring inhumane treatment, the former police officer remarked that he managed to sleep well during his time in the NIB police cells. He attributed this to his confidence in his innocence regarding the allegations leveled against him.

“I slept very well at NIB, I slept with a very good conscience. I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong and began to plan what to do next. My only worry was my family. I wasn’t comfortable, but I had a good conscience,” he stated.

However, he was concerned that the NIB officers did not visit his home to conduct any search, considering the severity of the accusations against him.

“You have arrested somebody who is alleged to have abetted the highest crime of the land, accused me of paying money to support an alleged coup. The worst-case scenario is you should go to my house, do a few checks, even to the bank, check my accounts, even to the extent that you could even freeze my accounts. They never did any of those things,” he said.

Mr. Agordzo and nine others, including the late CEO of Citadel Hospital, Dr. Mac Palm, were charged in 2021 with conspiracy to commit high treason and high treason.

However, on January 24, an Accra High Court acquitted Mr. Agordzo and two others, Colonel Gameli and junior military officer Corporal Seidu Abubakar.

The remaining six, including three soldiers, were found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason and high treason. They have been sentenced to death by hanging.

Those convicted include Donya Kafui, also known as Ezor (a blacksmith), Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu (a fleet manager), and Johannes Zikpi (a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces).

Ghana is California and Nigeria is New York – Davido draws differences

In a recent interview, Nigerian superstar Davido offered his unique perspective on the cultural distinctions between Ghana and Nigeria, likening them to two iconic American states: New York and California.

He went on to elaborate on the appeal of Ghana, describing it as a preferred destination for those seeking a more laid-back atmosphere and ample vacation opportunities.

“The difference between Nigerian and Ghana. Let me just explain. Nigeria is New York, Ghana is calm, California.”

“So what happens is that people tend to go to Ghana more because there are fewer people and space. There is more vacation,” Davido said.

He, however, noted that Nigeria sort of plays the devil’s advocate, providing a mixture of both the good stuff and bad stuff.

But you are trying to eat everything in one; you want to see the bad part, great part and everything. Go to Lagos. Everything is in that Lagos,” he said.

  • Kasoa ritual murder trial: Second accused denies plotting to kill 10-year-old Ishmael

Kasoa ritual murder trial: Second accused denies plotting to kill 10-year-old Ishmael

At the High Court in Accra, presided over by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, the 18-year-old teenager, who stands charged alongside a 15-year-old juvenile for the murder of Ishmael Mensah Abdallah, has asserted, “I do not know anything about the death.”

These two individuals are facing charges of conspiracy and murder in connection with the tragic death of 10-year-old Ishmael Mensah Abdallah.

During the court proceedings on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, the 18-year-old juvenile, serving as the second accused, commenced his defense in the ongoing trial subsequent to the closure of the first accused’s case.

Under the guidance of his legal representative, the 18-year-old presented his Evidence-in-Chief to the Court. He refuted the allegations leveled against him, particularly contesting the assertion made by the 15-year-old juvenile, who serves as the first accused.

The first accused admitted to the offense and claimed that they “committed the crime together.”

However, the 18-year-old denied the veracity of this statement, asserting that the account provided by the 15-year-old was false, particularly regarding any alleged planning of the death of 10-year-old Ishmael.

“When the first accused spent the night in my house, we did not plan the death of Ishmael,” he told the Court on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.

“On Friday, (April 2, 2021), when the first accused came to my house, I asked him where he was coming from and he told me that he went to work with his father around Subum near Nsawam.

“I asked him where his father was and he told me that his father had left earlier to the house,” he narrated to the Court.

He added, “I also asked him if he had been home and he told me that when he went home, he saw that the door had been locked so he decided to spend the night in my house because I was home alone that day.”

“When he spent the night in my house, we did not discuss anything in relation to going to any place and on that day, he (15-year-old) did not speak to anyone on phone when he was in my house,” he told the jury.

“I told him the coming Monday, (April 5, 2021), I would want to visit my hometown. He told me he’d like to come along with me to my home town because he had heard that there’s a lot of black magic there.

“The first accused (15-year-old juvenile) also told me that he had won a lottery and that he had GHc500 on his phone that day.

“I told him that I was feeling sleepy and I wanted to go to sleep. I turned off the light and we both slept,” he told the Court.

Asked by his Counsel to tell the Court what happened the next day, the 2nd Accused offered explanation.

“My lady on Saturday, April 3, 2021, when I and the first accused woke up,  I told him to wash his face and start heading home since his father might be looking for him.

“After he freshened up, he left. The first accused left my house at about 5am to 6am.

“I went to brush my teeth and that is when my grandfather asked me to warm the farm so I and my siblings can eat.

“I lit up the fire and was about to warm the food when I saw Mr Nyarko father asked how I was doing,” he narrated to the Court.

“I said I was fine, he proceeded to tell me that he had some work to do and would like me to assist him to do that. I asked him where his son, 1st Accused was and he told me that 1st Accused wasn’t feeling well so he could not assist him.

“I asked his (1st accused) father if he was aware that his son slept over in my house on Friday,” but said, “the first accused father told me that his son did not tell him that but rather he told him that he slept in an uncompleted building close to their house,” he stated.

The case has been adjourned to February 8, 2024.

  • NIA Executive Secretary issued one-month ultimatum to pay GH₵98k used for SSNIT penalty

NIA Executive Secretary issued one-month ultimatum to pay GH₵98k used for SSNIT penalty

Parliament has instructed the Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Prof. Kenneth Attafuah, to reimburse over GHc98,000 deducted from the Authority’s account as a penalty for delayed transfer of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions.

Due to the NIA’s failure to promptly remit SSNIT contributions, the penalty was covered using the Authority’s funds.

The Public Accounts Committee, concurring with the Auditor General’s recommendation, has affirmed that Prof. Ken Attafuah and the financial controller should be held responsible for the penalty’s cost.

During his appearance before the Public Accounts Committee on Wednesday, February 7, the Executive Secretary of the NIA was given a one-month deadline to reimburse the amount.

“The recommendation is that you should refund the money, the money should be refunded from the Chief Executive and Financial Controller. You have come to explain why you did not pay the money you withheld to SSNIT but the committee will not accept your explanation.

“So the recommendation of the Auditor General still holds, the Chief Executive and the Financial Controller should go and refund the money to the recovery account of the auditor general and this should be done in one month,” Chairman James Klutse Avedzi said.

  • Your name is Fati not Celestina and your father is a watchman — NPP youth in FB beef, Salam cited (flashback)

Your name is Fati not Celestina and your father is a watchman — NPP youth in FB beef, Salam cited (flashback)

Following the just-ended youth elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), social media communicators within the party are engaged in a heated exchange on social media platforms.

Reports indicate that Celestina Abena Henewaa Amoako-Atta, known as Fati from the North, publicly referred to her colleague communicator, Atick Yakubu, as “a gossip” in Twi under a post made by another party member.

Atick Yakubu, displeased with the description, retaliated by disclosing the background of his disagreement with Celestina Amoako-Atta, including sharing chat records between them.

The chat records revealed a disagreement between the two regarding the NPP Youth Election, which was won by Mustapha Salam. Mustapha had attempted to resolve an issue with Celestina Amoako-Atta, but she did not support him, while Atick Yakubu did.

In his response, Atick Yakubu revealed Celestina’s true identity as Fati from the North and highlighted that her father works as a watchman, contrary to claims of being allegedly related to Asante Bediatuo.

Read the full post by Yakubu below:

Gm , Celestina Abena Henewaa Amoako-Atta , ordinarily , I do not reply my juniors and people my little brother is older than in kind . That’s not my style . You know , class is not money but attitude and when it comes to attitude am richer than Elon Musk . But I chose this medium because it seems you have fooled for soo long and no one seem to mind you for whichever reason . Maybe it could be you have sworn an affidavit to change your name from Fati whatever horrible surname you were given to “Amoako-Atta “ to gain some validation. I understand your pain but in this life eeeh accept who you are and no one can use it against you . When I call people on phone , I introduce myself as “Atick Yakubu “ . That’s confidence , that’s high self-esteem. As a northerner , you gotta be proud of where you come from . After all Mahamdu Bawumia is the veep and and even the southerners think his name is sexy . If Mahamudu is sexy , how much more “Fati “ . Embrace who  you are . That’s the beginning of having a high self esteem. This is free therapy. I will help you with your other psychological problems later . And that’s also for free . Am doing this for free cos no matter what , you are our northern sister . No matter what you are now or trying to be I got your back sis .

Nonetheless, am proud of what you were able to achieve this with ”Celestina Amoako-Atta “ . At least you had a scholarship to go study abroad from the people whom your father used to be a “watchman “ for . They have done well . At least as daughter of a watchman, your inheritance would have been a mat , a torchlight and buta “ and maybe a little bottle for “pito “ but you have made a good deal with this . At least all the nights daddy was bitten by mosquitoes didn’t go in vain . My only disappointment is that you came back with too much piercings and tattoo than 2pac shakur. I pray you never get that money you pray soo much for to go do that liposuction on your tinny ass . Aside me wanting to lose a northern sister , I think an ass won’t be look good on you . You look like a tripod stand with your lanky legs and that will be a disgusting sight for some of us . On behalf of all men who love thick , we banish you from having ass in the name of Jesus. Again since  you are good with name changes you can as well add 2pac to your name . His inspiration for tattoos  and piercings can’t go unnoticed.

Enough of the introduction. Now let me get to the topic . I woke up to see my little northern sister insulting me on a post someone made on me . Soo this is the genesis of the issue . During the NYO contest , I noticed she was throwing shades at Salam . I had some reservations in relation to Mercedes I personally called Mercy and foster  cos we go way back . She told me her comments and posts were taken  out of context . I respectfully went with her narrative. She’s among those who worked soo hard for the party in opposition unlike Fati who came from nowhere , called my line and introduced herself as whoever and wanted my support for a position she was running for . I knew she wouldn’t win but then I opened the channel of communication with her . She eventually lost , she tried getting closer and by posting my pics with some “am cool “ with you captions when we weren’t that cool . Like some “ahohy3hy3 vibes . At a point I had to send her a message to delete a post she once made and she unfriended me and sent another request months later . I wasn’t definitely going to roll with someone who seem to begging for attention. That “fake it till you make it “ life is not my kind . It’s the first stage of mental sickness.

Back to the topic , I called Salam and I asked him if he had reached out to Mercy and Celestina. Mercy was needed but it’s politics soo you have to manage everyone even with those who are think they mattered like Celestina. I don’t know how  Salam managed it with the lady and the girl . But eventually I reached out to Fati to ask her what’s up ?  I still have my chats with her . All of a sudden she assumed the position of seemingly relevance like I had reported her and blah blah and I have put her in trouble etc . In fact I was confused soo the usual me was plain with her . I told her she didn’t have anything to add to the election and it came out of the fact that she said something whoever she threw her support for will be the next NYO or so and I was like who do you think you are ? You have no idea of how Youth elections are run , you don’t have money to influence things , you don’t have any influence .

The next thing I realized is she unfriended me cos probably she was soo fighting for the relevance and self importance and I rubbished her . I was just being me . On that issue if my little Northern sister Fati felt insulted, I apologize though I was stating the obvious which became evident. I never engaged her for all those time till today when she went to write this comment about me .

Now let me make something clear to you . Look , me eeh I can fight . You have no idea what you are dealing with here . Am not a beast . My creation is still not defined . Whichever angle you take this too I will beat you to it .

It’s kinda uncomfortable taking on a little girl . I deal with cats but not just any cat but lions , tigers , leopards and cheetahs not Domesticated cats . It’s soo uncomfortable but I gotta put you where you belong . Nothing pains me more than using my data on someone like you but trust me you will pay for it . Aside my dear Hon Cos Premanii whom I have signed a perpetual bond to fight with and make up I do not engage ladies but take note , the word I used was “ladies “ .  below is the chats between she and I  that led to this nonsense this morning.

And those close to her should talk to her . She won’t like it when I place her in my red book . And am also not amongst those who she bullies on Facebook . In fact not even those she has adopted their name can bully me . Tweeea Kai

  • It is not Bawumia’s place to determine his running mate – Ayikoi Otoo

It is not Bawumia’s place to determine his running mate – Ayikoi Otoo

Former Attorney-General Ayikoi Otoo has indicated that Vice-President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer does not possess the ultimate authority to select his running mate for the upcoming December elections.

Mr. Ayikoi Otoo emphasized that the power to make this decision lies with the National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). While Dr. Bawumia may suggest a candidate for the position, the final determination rests with the NEC, which holds the authority to either accept or reject his recommendation.

During an interview with Accra-based Asaase Radio on Tuesday, February 6, Mr. Ayikoi Otoo highlighted the limited influence of the NPP flagbearer in such matters.

“The choice of a running mate by Vice President Bawumia will not be final until it is approved by the national council of the New Patriotic Party,” Ayikoi Otoo said.

“What happens in the true state of affairs is he [Vice-President Bawumia] sends the name there for them to look at it and to decide whether they like it or not. So who is actually making the choice?”

Shortly after Dr Bawumia was elected flagbearer of the NPP in November 2023, a list purportedly unveiling a roster of individuals eyeing the Vice President slot emerged on social media.

The unverified compilation consisted of names like Chief of Staff, Frema Opare; Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako Atta; Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu; Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum, among others.

It has been over two months, and Dr Bawumia is yet to announce his running mate ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Meanwhile, the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has advised supporters to avoid pressuring Dr. Bawumia regarding the selection of his running mate.

Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized the significance of granting the party’s flagbearer the autonomy to make his own decision regarding the choice of a running mate, believing that doing so would enhance the unity and success of the party.

As the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, he expressed trust in Dr. Bawumia’s intelligence and anticipated that he would make a prudent choice that aligns with the party’s best interests.

First consideration of anti-gay bill takes place today

Parliament is set to resume consideration of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill today, following its return from recess on Tuesday, February 6.

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has expressed confidence in the completion of the clause-by-clause amendment process of the bill by the end of Friday, February 9.

The legislation aims to outlaw LGBTQ identification and associated activities within the Ghanaian society.

In his opening remarks in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu revealed that the bill is expected to undergo comprehensive amendments by Friday.

“The Business Committee on February 5 programmed to have the first consideration of the bill beginning February 7, and we do anticipate that we will be able to get it to a closure by Friday [February 9],” he said.

One of the proponents of the bill, Mr Sam George Nartey, who is the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has expressed confidence in the potential passage of the Bill by March 2024.

In an interview on Eyewitness News at Citi FM, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram shared insights into the bill’s current status, highlighting ongoing amendments with inputs from various stakeholders.

“They are almost 60% done with consideration. Hopefully, there will be another two weeks of parliamentary work when we resume, and they should be done with consideration. The third stage of reading is just a procedural thing. It is read, and then the bill is passed,” George explained.

Providing a timeline for the potential passage, George stated, “In fact, during the first session of the meeting we are about to start, we believe that in the first session, which is going to run from the 6th of February to the end of March or early April, I believe that we should pass the bill before Easter. I think it is something we should give as an Easter gift from parliament to the nation. So we would strive to work with the speaker and the committee chair.”

  • Unidentified bodies in Accra to be held by Korle-Bu morgue

Unidentified bodies in Accra to be held by Korle-Bu morgue

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra is set to transfer its mortuary to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to serve as a city morgue for the preservation of unidentified bodies.

This decision comes as the hospital concludes the construction of a new mortuary as part of its centenary anniversary celebrations.

Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, revealed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra. He explained that the construction of the new morgue was undertaken through a private-public partnership agreement.

Dr. Ampomah emphasized the necessity for a dedicated city morgue in Accra to handle cases involving unidentified bodies, victims of hit-and-run incidents, and abandoned corpses requiring forensic examination and DNA tracing to locate their families.

He highlighted the current practice where health facilities like Korle Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals act as default morgues for unidentified bodies. Dr. Ampomah noted that aside from the financial burden of refrigerating these bodies, the hospitals are also responsible for organizing mass burials, including pre-burial advertising, using their limited resources.

Additionally, the hospitals incur expenses for burial permits payable to the city authority, which bears primary responsibility for managing abandoned bodies.

“City authorities are the bodies which receive taxes, such as property rates and, therefore, are responsible for these unidentified bodies,” the CEO said.

Dr. Ampomah further highlighted the challenges faced by pathologists, including consultant pathologists, who worked on unidentified bodies. Despite their efforts, they were compensated with less than GH¢5 for each body, and at times, these payments were not even fulfilled.

In addition to addressing the issues surrounding unidentified bodies, Dr. Ampomah outlined several other projects planned by the hospital. These include the rehabilitation of the Endoscopy unit, the construction of a Paediatric Oncology unit, a new 24-hour pharmacy annex, and the transformation of the Dietherapy unit into a Nutrition and Dietetics Department.

To commemorate the hospital’s centenary anniversary, various activities have been scheduled, including public lectures, outreach programs, an awards and fundraising dinner dance, remembrance day, a float, homecoming, and an innovation summit.

Dr. Ampomah appealed to corporate bodies and individuals to support these initiatives. Interested donors can reach out to the hospital’s public relations unit or make contributions through a dedicated short code 713100#.

VIDEO: How the British ‘stole’ Asanteman’s artefacts during Sagrenti War

Professor Tom McCaskie, a renowned expert in Asante History at the Centre of West African Studies, University of Birmingham, UK, has noted that the Sagrenti War marked a significant milestone in British military history.

It was the first war in which a substantial number of British press, he said, accompanied the troops with the explicit purpose of spreading propaganda.

He did so at the launch of a book on the History of Asanteman.

After more than five decades since his passing, a book on the History of Asanteman, authored by Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, has been launched in Kumasi.

Edited by Prof. Tom McCastie, a distinguished professor of Asante History at the Centre of West African Studies of the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, the book serves as an autobiography of the 14th Asantehene, who reigned from 1931 to 1970.

The book launch was part of the activities commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War and the silver jubilee of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

  • Where is ‘Chuck’ Kofi Wayo?

    Where is ‘Chuck’ Kofi Wayo?

Once upon a time, his voice was the most sought after and listened to when he wheezed into town with not only his American, but cowboy accent.

Listening to him back then, he was among the few brave men around, who dared to criticize the administration of Jerry John Rawlings.

Kofi Wayo, was your typical American returnee, who insulted the leaders, as well as the lead. Like many we have heard before, they make the problems of Ghana and by extension Africa look like, with a wave of a hand, it could go away.

Kofi Wayo, is a showman and a lover of cigar and did not shy to flaunt it anywhere he was, including on national television.

His level of confidence, bluntness, skills and political sagacity are all factors that have contributed to giving him an advantage and easy-go with what he does.

Kofi ‘Chuck’ Wayo, unlike others was different, he put his money, where his mouth is, when he jumped in the ring to contest in the parliamentary election to represent the people of East Ayawaso on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party, unfortunately he failed to win.

After losing to represent the people of Nima, he noisily resigned from the the NPP to join the People’s National Convention (PNC).

His intention for joining the PNC was so he could become the running mate to Dr Edward Mahama, when that did not materialized he later left the PNC, describing it as ‘chinchinga (khebab) party to form the now defunct United Renaissance Party (URP).

Chuck Kofi Wayo, simply by sheer political sagacity become one of the most sought after politician in the country. The public love him, the media is in a frenzy where ever he goes.

But, unfortunately the man who has kept public office holders accountable in the past is missing at a time, he is needed the most. The pervasive corruption, which has become a principle of state policy and waste of public funds that the country is witnessing under the Akufo-Addo government is unprecedented.

Men of valor, who found their voice when John Dramani Mahama was in office, have been cowed into seclusion and became the proverbial monkey “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”.

They no longer see the wrongs that is going on in the country, the principles that got them talking in the past, should get them talking now, but no! they cannot be bothered because most of them are sitting at the dining table and enjoying the spoils of power. In other words, they are observing table manners; you don’t talk whiles eating.

Few men in history, have stayed true to their conviction regardless of who is in power and Kofi Wayo, is certainly one as far as Ghana is concerned.

This is because when it comes to the matter of personal conviction and the courage to stand firmly on one’s principles, I know for a fact that there are few persons dead or alive that match the towering height of Kofi Wayo’s candor and courage.

When he first made his entrance in the 90’s, he criticized the government of ex-president, Jerry John Rawlings, his disdain for that regime was what motivated him to join the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He was of the considered conviction that, the country under Jerry Rawlings was going in the wrong direction.

He was not only interested in criticizing, as many do, they sit in the comfort of their homes or offices to criticize every decision of the government, but he actually laced his boots, folded his shirt and join in bring about the change of government. He campaigned with former president John Agyekum Kufuor, he went round the country, preaching the message of change.

When Kufuor won and things were not going the way, Kofi Wayo, had envisaged, he jumped ship and started to take on the government. He actually resigned from the NPP, a party on whose ticket, he almost went to parliament. What drives him is not about self-aggrandizement, it is not about enriching himself at the expense of Ghanaians, if he was after any of these things, he would have gotten more than necessary.

Kofi Wayo, was an unrepentant Ghanaian, his love for his country, is what made him a household name. He can’t see his people suffering and look the other way, even when doing so, will mean, he getting his share of the loot.

He is perhaps one of the consistent politicians, I have come to know and admired. He will be with you today and when you deviate from that shared vision, he will be the first to call you out and tell you his peace of mind.

He spoke truth to power, no matter who was in power and how close they were once upon a time. His silence as I have mentioned earlier, at this critical hour is deafening.

Chuck Kofi Wayo, wherever you, Ghanaians need now more than ever. The 2024 election is not just any election, but a call of duty. The many voices of reason have all gone to sleep, when the rest of Ghanaians suffer in silence. Many Ghanaians have slipped into poverty, Ghanaians are suffering, taxes are suffocating them, they can no longer meet their basic needs, human dignity has been thrown to the dogs, Akufo-Addo and  his few cronies are feeding fat on our collective heritage, when we complain they tell us to shut up, please Sir, if you still have the benefit of your tongue and legs, you have the work of God to do this year.

This is because, with the way things currently stand in the country, it is money, not performance, integrity etc, which win elections.

Ghanaians need you back, your silence has emboldened cronies of this government to think, they are no men in this country.

Gone are those good old days when the fear of Chuck Kofi Wayo, was the beginning of wisdom for Ghana’s power grabbers.

For your efforts at exposing the falsehoods of our leaders, for the privations you have suffered in this pursuit, for your many struggles and the attendant challenges that come with them, Ghana is thankful.

Manhyia South MP, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who is also the Minister for Energy, paid an amount of GHC200,000 to support the launch of a book on the History of Asanteman, authored by Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II.

Many dignitaries were present and also made a contribution by purchasing the book.

Ernest Ofori Sarpong of Special Ice and businessman Osei Kwame Despite each gave GHC100,000. Cal Bank also bought a copy of the book for GHC50,000.

The individuals who purchased a copy of the book received a certificate and four tickets to attend Otumfuo’s dinner.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, praised the significance of the book in bridging gaps in Ashanti history and serving as a crucial research material on Asante History.

He noted that while there have been previous books on the history of Asanteman, none have been as comprehensive as the one authored by the late Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II and edited by one of the foremost experts on Asante history.

Dr. Adutwum also called upon writers of children’s books to consider creating children’s versions of the book to enhance its accessibility to younger audiences.

He emphasized that the book represents a comprehensive history of the Asante Kingdom and advocated for its presence on the shelves of every library in the country.

Prior to the book launch, a symposium was held to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War, a conflict between the British Colonial Army and the Asantes.

During the symposium, the Kumasi Centre for National Culture staged a play written by Emmanuel Jewel Peprah Mensah, depicting the events of the Sagrenti War. The purpose of the stage play was to provide the audience with an understanding of the war and its aftermath.

Prof. McCastie shared insights on the war, highlighting that besides the royal ornaments stolen from the palace, the British soldiers also looted gold and gold dust belonging to the then Asantehene Otumfuo Kofi Karikari.

He estimated the value of the stolen gold to be worth more than £2 billion. Prof. McCastie noted that some of the looted items, such as a brass basin used for spiritual cleansing, are still on display in museums in the UK, like the Military Museum in London.

Discussing the role of Asante women in the war, Prof. Eugenia Anderson of the History and Political Studies Department of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) highlighted their significant contributions to the sustenance of the Asante kingdom.

Although women of childbearing age faced socio-cultural barriers limiting their involvement at the war’s frontline, older women played active roles in the kingdom’s socio-political life.

Prof. Anderson cited the pivotal roles played by three Asante queenmothers—Afia Kobi, Nana Yaa Akyaa, and Yaa Asantewaa—in protecting the golden stool and safeguarding the Asante kingdom.

Prince William and Harry unlikely to get together amid King Charles’ cancer treatment – Report

Prince Harry has returned to the U.K. following the news of his father King Charles‘ cancer diagnosis, but according to reports, his visit may not entail a reunion with his brother, Prince William.

The Duke of Sussex, aged 39, arrived at London Heathrow Airport on Tuesday and proceeded to Clarence House, the long-standing residence of King Charles, aged 75.

Reports suggest that the last time the father and son were together was during the monarch’s coronation ceremony in May, which Harry attended before swiftly departing for the airport immediately after the event.

Prince Harry undertook the journey solo from California, where he resides with his wife Meghan Markle and their two children, 4-year-old son Prince Archie and 2-year-old daughter Princess Lilibet.

Despite Prince Harry’s meeting with King Charles on Tuesday, just one day after the public announcement of the monarch’s cancer diagnosis, a royal source has indicated that there are currently “no plans” for Prince Harry and Prince William to reunite.

Prince William, aged 41, has been occupied with numerous responsibilities of his own. In recent weeks, he has taken a step back from royal engagements to devote time to caring for his three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — while his wife, Kate Middleton, recuperates from her recent abdominal surgery.

The Princess of Wales, aged 42, is not expected to resume public duties until at least Easter, as previously stated by the palace.

The Prince of Wales is scheduled to resume public duties on Wednesday, beginning with an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle followed by the annual fundraising gala for the London Air Ambulance.

As the heir to the throne, Prince William may assume some responsibilities on behalf of his father in addition to his own roster of engagements in the upcoming weeks, according to sources familiar with the matter. However, there are currently no plans to appoint Counsellors of State to act on King Charles’ behalf. Counsellors of State are members of the royal family designated to carry out constitutional duties for the monarch in the event of his absence or incapacity. The current Counsellors of State include Queen Camilla, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, Princess Beatrice, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward.

While heirs in other royal families across the world may serve as regents when the monarch is indisposed or overseas, the situation in the U.K. differs. According to the House of Commons Library, regents are not permanently installed in Britain, and their appointment is restricted to specific circumstances.

We won’t stop blacklisting politicians who fuel attacks against journalists – GJA

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and freedoms of journalists nationwide, pledging to combat any form of aggression towards them.

Albert Dwumfuor, the President of the Association, asserted on Eyewitness News on Citi FM that the GJA will persist in instructing its members to blacklist any individual who threatens journalists in the country.

This resolution comes following a directive jointly issued by the GJA, the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), the Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA).

The directive urges media organizations across the country to blacklist Farouk Mahama, the Member of Parliament for Yendi, for his reported assault on Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira, a Northern Regional Reporter for Citi News.

According to reports, Mr. Mahama and his team attacked Alabira while he was covering the disruption of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primary in the Yendi constituency on January 27, 2024.

Mr. Dwumfuor added in the interview, “In fact, this is the way to go. We want to send a signal, a caution that we are not going to relax on our call for our members to blacklist politicians, individuals, or groups who rise against journalists or who impede press freedom and media independence… We will not entertain such acts.”

Collapsed cotton industry will be revived under my administration – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has made a commitment to resurrect the cotton industry in Northern Ghana to bolster job creation for the youth if elected president in the 2024 election.

Recognizing the industry’s transformative potential for the economy, Mahama emphasized that a government led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would prioritize investments in the sector to enhance the viability and commercial appeal of cotton production.

Furthermore, Mahama outlined plans to provide support to farmers to ensure the production of high-quality cotton.

“Cotton is the easiest cash crop to cultivate because it doesn’t like much rains and also doesn’t affect other crops cultivation. With a deliberate investment, the cotton industry which has now virtually collapsed will be revitalised to boost the economy,” he noted.

Mr. Mahama delivered this statement during a town hall meeting held in Tamale on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, as part of his three-day ‘Building Ghana Tour’ of the Northern Region.

The gathering attracted various professional groups, including dressmakers, barbers, butchers, teachers, and others. These individuals had the opportunity to voice their concerns and present their grievances to the NDC’s flagbearer, outlining their expectations for remedial action should he emerge victorious in the December election.

Our prayers are with you in these difficult times – Akufo-Addo sympathises with King Charles after cancer news

President Akufo-Addo of Ghana extended his heartfelt sympathies to King Charles III of the United Kingdom after news broke of the monarch’s battle with cancer.

In a poignant message shared on behalf of the people and Government of Ghana, as well as his wife, Rebecca, the First Lady, President Akufo-Addo conveyed his best wishes to King Charles as he undergoes treatment.

“In these difficult times, our thoughts and prayers are with the British Monarch, his wife, Queen Camilla, and the entire British Royal Family,” wrote President Akufo-Addo in a post on X on February 6th.

“I join the global community in wishing him strength, courage, and a swift and complete recovery,” he added.

Buckingham Palace has announced that King Charles will temporarily postpone his public engagements as he undergoes treatment for cancer.

Prince William is anticipated to fulfill some of his father’s duties during this period.

Although specific details regarding the King’s prognosis have not been disclosed, the Palace has clarified that the illness is not prostate cancer, although it was detected during treatment for an enlarged prostate. The King commenced “regular treatments” for his condition on Monday.

Despite scaling back his public appearances, King Charles will continue fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities as head of state, including administrative tasks and private meetings. His weekly audiences with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak are expected to proceed in person unless advised otherwise by medical professionals.

The Palace has affirmed that King Charles maintains an optimistic outlook regarding his treatment and eagerly anticipates resuming his public duties. Both of his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, have been informed about his diagnosis. Prince Harry, who resides in the United States, has spoken to his father and plans to travel to the UK to be with him in the near future.

King Charles has returned to London from Sandringham in Norfolk and has commenced outpatient treatment.

  • Large number of ‘defeated’ MPs a huge loss to Ghana’s democracy – Speaker Bagbin

Large number of ‘defeated’ MPs a huge loss to Ghana’s democracy – Speaker Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed deep concern over the significant number of incumbent MPs who lost their seats in both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries.

During the recent NPP primaries held in January, 28 sitting MPs were defeated, while the NDC primaries last year saw 17 MPs losing their candidacy bids.

Additionally, prior to the NPP primaries, 19 incumbent MPs chose not to seek re-election, with five NDC MPs making similar decisions last year.

Mr. Bagbin emphasized that the departure of numerous MPs represents a substantial loss of investment in these legislators, which is detrimental to the nation.

In his welcome address to MPs in the house, the Speaker noted that this trend does not bode well for Ghana’s democratic development and legislative continuity.

“Experience, as we all know, counts in this house, but the endorsement of your party to contest is equally important. Honourable members, the haemorrhage and cost to the nation is however, a matter of great concern worth considering by all stakeholders.”

“Honourable members, the primaries are part of the process for the electorate to determine who represents them in parliament. However, the case of voluntary discontinuance of 5 and 19 followed by this election of 17 and 28 is not a good signal for the legislation and for Ghana’s democratic development,” he noted.

He urged political parties to address this issue internally, emphasizing the impact of losing experienced MPs after just a single term in office.

Speaker Bagbin stressed the importance of parties recognizing the value of continuity and experience in parliamentary representation, urging them to implement measures to support and retain seasoned lawmakers within their ranks.

“I want to appeal to the political parties to take this matter up seriously because the investment that is made in an individual MP is so huge for the nation just to always go waste after every four years,” said the Speaker.

Meanwhile, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is also appealing to political parties to review their internal election mechanisms to safeguard sitting MPs.

He asserts that the processes and procedures employed by parties in the selection of candidates directly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of parliament in conducting its business.

He added that “This ultimately impacts the growth of apartment and democracy of the country.”

  • Kill govt officials found guilty of corruption – Presidential aspirant

Presidential candidate of the Begin Ghana Party, Edward Ohene Kyei, has proposed the death penalty as a drastic measure to combat corruption in Ghana.

He argued that just as the death penalty has been utilized for treasonable offenses, it should also be employed as a deterrent against corruption.

Mr Kyei emphasized that Ghanaians naturally fear death, and the prospect of facing such severe consequences would dissuade individuals from engaging in corrupt activities.

During an exclusive interview with Dr. Ren on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM in the United Kingdom, he asserted that corruption is rampant in Ghana due to the absence of stringent laws to deter it.

Mr Kyei pledged to organize a referendum to persuade Ghanaians to vote in favor of implementing the death penalty for all corrupt officials.

He stated, “Our leaders are visionless and lack the natural love to help Ghana develop. We lack incorruptible leaders, which is why I will urge Ghana’s youth to rise and fight to protect our country from corrupt leaders.

“We have used the death penalty to combat treason, and we can take the same approach to dealing with corruption. Ghanaians and humans are particularly afraid of death, so we must sentence all corrupt officials to death,” he added.

Before imposing the death penalty, he proposed that all assets acquired through corrupt means would be confiscated and sold, with the proceeds directed towards Ghana’s development.

Mr Kyei further criticized Ghanaian politicians, alleging a lack of genuine patriotism and commitment to the nation’s welfare. He highlighted the need for policies promoting job creation, economic growth, healthcare expansion, decentralization, and business development.

In some countries, like China and North Korea, public officials have been executed or may face death for corruption and other related crimes like bribery.

In 2011, China sentenced to capital punishment Xu Maiyong, former vice mayor of Hangzhou City, and Jiang Renjie, vice mayor of Suzhou City in 2011. The officials were found guilty of bribery amounting to $50 million.

Parliament creates independent caucus following new Standing Orders

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has announced that the new Standing Orders of the House now allow Members of Parliament the option to belong to an independent caucus.

Bagbin explained that the updated standing orders, which came into effect on Tuesday, February 6th, provide MPs with the opportunity to form an independent caucus instead of affiliating with either the Majority or Minority caucus.

He disclosed this information during his opening remarks in Parliament.

“The system that we have now allows you to belong to what we call the independent caucus. You don’t need to align with the Minority or the Majority. As I state very often, we can have an independent president in this country without members of parliament. The rules have changed, and this change recognizes the situation that we are in and also prepares for other future scenarios.”

According to the new Standing Orders, Members of Parliament will commence sessions by reciting the National Pledge.

This notable amendment in the new standing orders mandates heads of government institutions to appear directly before Parliament to address queries concerning their agencies.

This change contrasts with the previous standing orders, which allowed Ministers of State to represent the heads of institutions during questioning.

  • ECOWAS failing to recognise political change in sub-region – Prof Aning

ECOWAS failing to recognise political change in sub-region – Prof Aning

Director of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Professor Kwesi Aning, has highlighted what he views as a significant threat to the stability of the remaining members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

During an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, Professor Aning stressed the critical lack of understanding among ECOWAS states regarding the shifting dynamics in the sub-region, the expectations of their populations, and the constitutional challenges surrounding elections.

He specifically noted that three states—Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—have indicated intentions to withdraw from the regional union, suggesting that they might navigate the changing dynamics successfully.

“The coastal states of ECOWAS were more willing to listen to their masters from outside the sub-region and listen to the bogus analysis from elsewhere that the terrorists were coming. Coming from where?” Professor Aning questioned, stressing the need for a more nuanced understanding of the situation.

Security Expert and Senior UN Mediation Advisor, Dr. Emmanuel Bombande, echoing Professor Aning’s sentiments, stressed that these states indeed harbor genuine intentions to break away from the regional union.

However, he proposed that preventive measures and diplomatic dialogues could potentially reverse these intentions.

Dr. Bombande pointed out a flaw in the strategies pursued by the coastal states, noting that they were primarily focused on preventing the southward spread of terrorism, rather than addressing the root causes of instability in the Sahel states.

“The intention is genuine because we saw it coming and the attitude of the rest of West Africa particularly the coastal states was to innovate the initiatives that would halt the spread of terrorism from coming southward.

“This simply means that as long as terrorism stayed in the Sahel states it was okay. I think those strategies were fundamentally flawed and that is the genesis of the conversation among the Sahel states who said to themselves “let’s see one another as people whose destinies must be taken by us because our counterparts in West Africa are abandoning us.””

Nitiwul plotted my arrest – ACP Agordzo claims

Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benjamin Agordzo has made allegations against Minister of Defence Dominic Nitiwul, accusing him of engineering his arrest.

Agordzo claimed that Nitiwul instigated his arrest following his disclosure of information regarding Dr. Mac-Palm on a WhatsApp platform, as well as his expression of opinions on civil unrest and the Arab Spring.

According to Agordzo, Nitiwul reposted his previous comments on civil unrest with additional remarks implying that he needed to be brought under control, which ultimately led to his arrest.

“A member of the government, a cabinet minister [Dominic Nitiwul], who is on Adam Bonaa’s WhatsApp platform quickly picked it. He initiated my arrest. I had spoken about the Arab Spring on the Adam Bonaa platform, and discussed civil unrest on Dr Mac-Palm’s platform, I spoke about the Arab Spring as well. When the arrests of the alleged coup makers were announced, we started discussing this same thing,” he said on Face to Face on Citi TV.

“While we all doubted, including a number of people, I also expressed my opinion on Adam Bonaa’s platform. I had told the whole world on the platform that I knew Dr [Mac-Palm]. I have met him once, he’s passionate about good governance. No sooner had I made that statement, than the minister posted my previous comments on civil unrest and added his own words ‘He’s way off the mark, he must be brought to order’. These are things I teach.”

When questioned if he was specifically pointing to the Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, ACP Agordzo affirmed, “Yes, exactly.” He alleged that Dominic Nitiwul targeted him following his remarks.

“He came after me because he started this whole thing. I protested when he did that. I reported him to the administrator of the platform. The administrator contacted him, and we have it on chat. The administrator told him the platform is a free one where members express their opinions on security and therefore should stop what he was doing. Less than two weeks I was arrested.”

The senior police officer further asserted that his case originated at the Defence Intelligence at Burma Camp under the oversight of Nitiwul before it was later transferred to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

He challenged the Defence Minister to confront him if he believed he was being slandered, emphasizing that he had never had any issues with him before.

“He [Dominic Nitiwul] should take me on if he thinks it is flimsy, and I will prove my case. The investigation against me started at the Defence Intelligence at Burma Camp under the supervision of the same minister. Before the case was transferred to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

He further asserted, “I don’t have any problem with him. Maybe he’s being vindictive, maybe he had something against me that I don’t know. He may not be comfortable with my opinions and decided to change my sitting place.”

In 2021, ACP Benjamin Agordzo, the late Dr. Mac Palm, and eight others were brought before the courts on charges of conspiracy to commit high treason and high treason.

However, on January 24, 2024, the High Court acquitted ACP Benjamin Agordzo, while six others were found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason.

The six individuals convicted for their involvement in the coup plot have been sentenced to death by hanging.

“Is he still watching over us?” – Claire Rupio reveals questions asked by Godwin after Atsu’s death

In a poignant revelation, Claire Rupio, the wife of the late Christian Atsu, has courageously shared the profound anguish she and their three young children have endured in his absence.

Their lives were forever altered by the devastating earthquake that rocked Turkey, claiming the lives of over 50,000 souls, including that of the beloved Ghanaian footballer exactly a year ago.

Claire’s words vividly depict the immense void left behind, echoing the silent cries of a family shattered by loss. Each passing day is marked by the absence of a husband and father, a presence deeply missed and irreplaceable.

In an interview with The Athletic, Claire Rupio indicated that she is sometimes left speechless due to the curious minds of her children. According to her, her second child, Godwin, keeps insisting on knowing the whereabouts of his father.

For Claire, this is a difficult circumstance to be in as telling the truth is a painful pill to swallow, hence has to cook up a story just to protect her children.

“Godwin (now seven) speaks about his dad a lot and asks a lot of questions, which can be tough. ‘Where is he now? What does he do now? Is he still watching over us?’”

Joshua, the eldest child who is now 10 years old, she says, carries Christian as a middle name and bears a striking resemblance to his father.

According to Claire, he has inherited his father’s face, smile, and even his walk. Joshua, was so close to his dead as he was present at his football games. She noted that her son deeply misses seeing his dad on the touchline during his football matches.

This, she said, has made him a quiet kid who is harbouring so many emotions within himself.

“When his dad came and watched him, it was a highlight for him. Now he’s gone. Every child takes it differently, but he has been very quiet. He doesn’t really want to talk, he just wants to see him.

Claire Rupio recounted that one of the most painful moments she had to face was on Father’s Day when her youngest daughter, Abigail, requested that she give her message to her father.

Abigail drew a picture she wanted her dad to have as a sign of her love. It was then she had to explain to her that her dear dad was now in heaven.

“Abigail drew a picture on the 24th and she was telling me, ‘Listen, don’t forget to send this to my dad’,” Claire says. “At first I said, ‘OK’, but then I had to explain that he’s up there watching over you now and she got upset.”

She also indicated that on Father’s Day, one of Christian’s close friends made a special effort to attend a significant school event in order to fill the void left by his absence as best as possible. The first Christmas without him was another challenging period for the family.

January 10 would have been his 32nd birthday. “We were not able to congratulate him, celebrate it with him or call him or anything, so January was very emotional,” Claire says.

According to Claire, since Atsu’s demise, she has been surviving instead of living. To ensure her mental health is not compromised, Claire sent Whatsapp messages to the phone Atsu left behind.

“When people say, ‘How are you coping?’ I don’t cope. I just survive every day,” Claire told The Athletic. “Mentally, you’re fine for a few days, maybe a week, but then lots of emotion comes.

“Sometimes I message Christian on WhatsApp — I just need to let it out,” she says. “‘Why are you not here?’ or maybe one of the kids needs him.”

The Ghana Police Service has interdicted a Police Chief Inspector, Benjamine Doe Kuwornu, stationed in the Central Region for misconducting himself in a video that has been sighted by the Police Administration.

The police, in their statement, failed to state the context of the misconduct, but a video shared by Graphic Online has provided the missing link.

Chief Inspector Kuwornu in the video believed to have been sighted by the Police administration voiced sharp criticism against President Akufo-Addo, labeling him as “incompetent” and accusing him of squandering Ghana’s resources.

“Mr President, you are destroying our nation. I want to meet you one on one…,” he said, adding “You are making a serious mistake….” he said.

His interdiction, the police said, is to allow for a thorough investigation into his conduct in line with Police Service Regulations.

“We would like to reiterate our assurance to the general public that the Police Service will continue to ensure that professionalism is maintained at all times in the discharge of our mandate,” the Police assured in a statement.

We won’t allow you take away another layer of integrity from Ghana’s election – Minority to EC over removal of indelible ink

Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has criticized the Electoral Commission (EC)’s decision to abandon the use of indelible ink in the upcoming elections, citing significant risks for the country.

Expressing grave concerns about the potential consequences of this decision, Dr. Ato Forson warned that it could lead to chaos at polling stations across the country. He urged for the decision to be reversed immediately.

Addressing Parliament at the commencement of the fourth session of the eighth Parliament, Dr. Ato Forson stressed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs would vehemently oppose the EC’s move.

He argued that the use of indelible ink is vital for ensuring the integrity of elections, as it provides a visible and transparent means of verifying voters in addition to biometric verification.

The former Deputy Finance Minister emphasized that indelible ink has long been recognized as a reliable method for preventing multiple voting, as it clearly marks individuals who have already cast their ballots.

Dr. Ato Forson stressed the importance of upholding established electoral practices to safeguard the credibility and fairness of the electoral process.

“The EC claims that doing away with indelible ink in Ghana’s electoral process forms part of its measures to improve the electoral process and ensure a robust identification system.”

“The truth of the matter is that the use of indelible ink in our electoral process does no harm to the conduct of free and fair elections in Ghana.”

“In fact, indelible ink adds another layer to the integrity of elections by ensuring that voters are visibly, transparently, and physically verified in addition to biometric verification.”

He has issued a firm warning to the Electoral Commission (EC), stating that they will not support any proposal to alter the scheduled date for the 2024 elections.

Dr. Ato Forson, insisted that there are more urgent issues requiring the EC’s immediate attention than considering a change in the election date.

According to him, the EC should prioritise the preparation of the 2024 election calendar and focus its efforts on addressing essential matters rather than diverting attention to what he termed as “unnecessary issues.”

However, Dr. Ato Forson indicated that the Minority’s stance might be reconsidered if the EC undertakes substantial and meaningful reforms following the conclusion of the 2024 elections.

“Rt. Hon. Speaker, again with general elections on the horizon, the Electoral Commission and those behind it have announced their intention to change the date for this year’s general election from December to November.”

“Let me say it here and now that the NDC Minority Caucus in Parliament will not support any such change at this time.”

“This is because there are more pertinent and pressing issues that require the immediate attention of the Electoral Commission than a change of date for general elections,” Dr Ato Forson said.

Why not mothers – Adwoa Safo contests strict use of “fathers” in national pledge

Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, raised an objection over the sole use of “fathers” in the national pledge when the House rose to recite the pledge as mandated by the new Standing Orders.

Effective Tuesday, February 6, parliamentary sessions commenced with the recitation of the national pledge to foster patriotism.

“I pledge myself to the service of Ghana, with all my strength and with all my heart. I promise to hold in high esteem our heritage, won for us through the blood and toil of our fathers; and I pledge myself in all things to uphold and defend the good name of Ghana. So help me God,” the national pledge reads.

After reciting the pledge at the commencement of the first meeting of the fourth session today, February 6, 2024, Madam Adwoa Safo drew the attention of Speaker Bagbin over the lack of recognition for women in Gold Coast’s toil for independence from British colonial rule.

She noted that singling out the role of men and ignoring women, even when Ghana is described as a woman, shows gender bias.

“This country, even when we were making reference to this country, we call it our motherland but when it comes to the pledge and we were referring to the toil, and fight, struggle, we omit that of our mothers.”

She therefore called on the Speaker to begin processes for gender appreciation and acknowledgement when reciting the national pledge.

“Mr Speaker, I want to draw your attention to it and we have to look at it again as a country so that we become more gender sensitive when it comes to our national pledge,” she added.

The speaker, in response, is said to have indicated the wording is from the constitution, thus a change might require an amendment.

Following the new Standing Orders’ implementation, Members of Parliament will also undergo a roll call.

The Electoral Commission and the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) are deliberating on having the 2024 general elections on November 7 rather than December 7, in order not to disenfranchise electorates following concerns by the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Meanwhile, he also stated that the NDC MPs would not support the EC’s decision to abandon the use of indelible ink in the upcoming elections, citing significant risks for the country.

Dr. Ato Forson expressed grave concerns about the potential consequences of this decision, warning that it could lead to chaos at polling stations across the country. He urged for the decision to be reversed immediately.

  • Stop sacking Black Stars coaches; your inefficiency is the problem – Speaker Bagbin tells GFA

Stop sacking Black Stars coaches; your inefficiency is the problem – Speaker Bagbin tells GFA

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has asserted that the dismissal of coaches from the senior national football team, the Black Stars, is not a comprehensive solution for addressing the team’s recent lackluster performances.

The Speaker shared his thoughts on the continuous dismissal of coaches after poor performances during a formal address to Parliament at the commencement of the first meeting of the fourth session today, February 6, 2024.

This statement comes in the wake of the Black Stars’ disappointing third-place finish in Group B at the ongoing 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, where they failed to secure a victory, including a loss to Cape Verde and draws with Egypt and Mozambique.

Subsequently, head coach Chris Hughton was terminated, and the entire technical team was disbanded.

Mr. Bagbin stressed the importance of adopting a holistic strategy to tackle the challenges facing Ghana’s football, indicating that simply changing coaches may not be sufficient to address underlying issues affecting the team’s performance.

“The Black Stars and their handlers must know that they represent more than just a football team. They are a symbol of our national pride, cohesion and resilience.

“They must therefore endeavour to rise from the ashes of these setbacks and demonstrate to the world the true power of Ghana’s football. It is high time we huddled together to discuss the current state of Ghana’s football and consider a comprehensive strategy for the future.

“The sacking of coaches is not the panacea for the challenges, we must evaluate the football infrastructure, youth development programmes, coaching standards and administrative structures to identify areas for improvements,” he stated.
