You cannot work independently and expect development – Dormaa East MP tells DCEs and MPs

Member of Parliament representing Dormaa East, Paul Twum Barimah, has issued a stern admonishment to District Chief Executives (DCEs) and his fellow legislators, urging them to avoid actions that could undermine each other’s work at the local level.

This advice comes in the wake of President Akufo-Addo’s decision to dismiss some 24 DCEs, amid speculation that the move was influenced by fallout from the recent parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and strained relationships between DCEs and MPs.

Speaking to the media after his acclamation as the NPP parliamentary candidate for Dormaa East, Mr. Twum Barimah stressed the importance of cooperation and collaboration over competition.

He cited his productive collaboration with the Dormaa East DCE as instrumental in driving progress for the constituency.

Mr. Twum Barimah recounted his collaborative efforts with the Dormaa East DCE and urged other lawmakers to follow suit, emphasizing the positive outcomes that can be achieved through mutual cooperation and teamwork.

“Immediately I was sworn in as a Member of Parliament, what I said was that I am a partner and an agent of development to my assembly. So the point is, I don’t expect my assembly or my DCE to bring a document to Accra and be chasing it. It is my duty to chase any document that he brings to Accra. It is my duty to talk to Amoako-Atta (Roads Minister) on roads. It is my duty to talk to Agyeman Manu on health because he has no access to them in Parliament. I do. So we have the collaboration that his job ends at identifying the challenges, dropping the letter, and I, Apraku, will take over and follow up. That collaboration has kept us going,” he said.

Mr. Twum Barimah attributed the constituency’s development successes to such collaborative efforts, emphasizing that all actions taken by both himself and the DCE are geared towards advancing the welfare of the people of Dormaa East.

Regarding the selection process for the party’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, Twum Barimah expressed confidence in the leadership’s ability to choose wisely.

‘Don’t forget to send this to my dad’ – Message Atsu’s daughter gave mother on Father’s Day

Claire Rupio, the wife of the late Christian Atsu, has opened up about the anguish she and their three young children have endured in his absence due to the devastating earthquake that shook Turkey and claimed the lives of over 50,000 people, including the Ghanaian footballer.

Today, February 6, marks exactly a year the tragic incident occurred, scarring the hearts of many families.

In an interview with The Athletic, Claire Rupio recounted that one of the most painful moments she had to face was on Father’s Day when her youngest daughter, Abigail, requested that she give her message to her father.

Abigail drew a picture she wanted her dad to have as a sign of her love. It was then she had to explain to her that her dear dad was now in heaven.

“Abigail drew a picture on the 24th and she was telling me, ‘Listen, don’t forget to send this to my dad’,” Claire says. “At first I said, ‘OK’, but then I had to explain that he’s up there watching over you now and she got upset.”

She also indicated that on Father’s Day, one of Christian’s close friends made a special effort to attend a significant school event in order to fill the void left by his absence as best as possible. The first Christmas without him was another challenging period for the family.

Joshua, the eldest child who is now 10 years old, carries Christian as a middle name and bears a striking resemblance to his father. According to Claire, he has inherited his father’s face, smile, and even his walk. Joshua deeply misses seeing his dad on the touchline during his football matches.

“When his dad came and watched him, it was a highlight for him. Now he’s gone. Every child takes it differently, but he has been very quiet. He doesn’t really want to talk, he just wants to see him.

“Godwin (now seven) speaks about his dad a lot and asks a lot of questions which can be tough. ‘Where is he now? What does he do now? Is he still watching over us?’”

January 10 would have been his 32nd birthday. “We were not able to congratulate him, celebrate it with him or call him or anything, so January was very emotional,” Claire says.

According to Claire, since Atsu’s demise, she has been surviving instead of living. To ensure her mental health is not compromised, Claire sent Whatsapp messages to the phone Atsu left behind.

“When people say, ‘How are you coping?’ I don’t cope. I just survive every day,” Claire told The Athletic. “Mentally, you’re fine for a few days, maybe a week, but then lots of emotion comes.

“Sometimes I message Christian on WhatsApp — I just need to let it out,” she says. “‘Why are you not here?’ or maybe one of the kids needs him.”

Mahama has been truthful in the past, allow him transform ‘poor’ Ghana – NDC to electorates

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has called upon the people of northern Ghana to place their trust in John Mahama during the upcoming 2024 elections.

He emphasized that individuals with small businesses cannot rely on the Nana Addo-Bawumia government, as they are likely to impose burdensome taxes that could harm their enterprises.

Mr. Kwetey urged voters to make informed decisions during the December polls, prioritizing candidates who genuinely prioritize their welfare, regardless of their geographical location.

“Northern region, you have produced a person that we can be proud of, a genuine son of the region, a genuine son of Ghana. He tells the truth. When he speaks, don’t you trust him? Yes, you can trust him. He told Ghana that even though dumsor was not caused by me, I will fix dumsor. And what did he do? He fixed it. So you can commit your business into his hands because he is a man that can be trusted. You can commit your farms into his hands; he is a man that can be trusted. You can commit Ghana and the resources of Ghana and the destiny of 30 million plus Ghanaians into his hands because he can be trusted.”

“The same cannot be said of the other son that came from your region. That other son that comes from the Northeastern part of this region of yours cannot be trusted. So you have produced two sons, one can be trusted, the other one you cannot even give your small business into his hands. Comrades, you owe it to Ghana to ensure that the son who can be trusted rises again to the leadership of this country.”

He made these remarks in Tamale, during the second day of the NDC flag-bearer’s ‘Building Ghana Tour’ of the Northern Region, encouraging party members to take pride in their association with the NDC.

Focus on paying electricity bills before and after Akosombo dam spillage – ECG tells victims

Spokesperson for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for the Tema region, Sakyiwaa Mensah, has entreated its customers affected by the Akosombo dam spillage to focus on bills for power consumed before and after the flooding period.

Concerns have been raised about customers receiving electricity bills covering the flood period, even when they were not occupying their homes. ECG advises

Sakyiwaa Mensah revealed ongoing collaboration with community leaders to compile a list of flooded homes and assess the impact. However, management is yet to decide on bills generated during the flooding period for affected customers.

Ms. Sakyiwaa clarified that current bills may still include the flooding period due to the cyclical nature of bill production. If customers had outstanding balances before the flood, it is considered legitimate consumption for which payment is required.

Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has advised customers affected by power disruptions caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage to have their premises assessed and certified by Certified Electrical Wiring Personnel (CEWP) and Energy Commission of Ghana-accredited inspectors.

Despite the general restoration of power, some communities have reported ongoing outages due to internal wiring issues caused by floodwater damage. To address this, ECG emphasizes the need for affected customers to engage qualified inspectors to assess and certify their premises, as the extent of damage remains uncertain.

Reports from these inspectors will be used as the basis for restoring power supply to affected customers.

“It has come to our notice that some customers in areas that were affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage are complaining of receiving bills from the Electricity Company of Ghana even though they were not in their residences at the time. It is worth noting that ECG bills come with levies and service charges even when the actual consumption of electricity is not happening.

“However, the management of ECG is yet to take a decision on this and in due course, it will be communicated to all affected customers. But it is worthy to note that if a customer was owing ECG before the incidence of the flood, that debt should be paid.”

She added, “We have restored power to the areas affected however there are some individual homes that still do not have supply. Now this is because the water went into some of their pipes affecting their wiring so we are not sure of the integrity of these installations.

“Now we are advising the customers to please contact Energy Certified Electricians to check on the integrity of these installations in their homes.”

Road commuters complain of thick clouds of dust in the air on Pokuase-Nsawam road as construction persists

Road commuters traveling along the Pokuase-Nsawam road have expressed their frustration over the persistent thick clouds of dust in the air, caused by ongoing construction activities.

The construction work, aimed at improving the road infrastructure, has inadvertently led to discomfort for commuters due to the dust generated during the process.

Commuters have voiced concerns about the potential health hazards posed by inhaling the dust particles, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions.

Some effects of this dusty atmosphere are breathing difficulties and irritation in their eyes and throat.

This comes at a time when a recent report by IQAir has ranked Accra as the city with the poorest air quality and highest pollution levels.

The report highlights PM2.5 as the primary pollutant in Accra’s atmosphere, with levels currently exceeding the WHO annual air quality guideline value by 63.1 times.

  • MPs recite national pledge, undergo roll call following new Standing Orders

MPs recite national pledge, undergo roll call following new Standing Orders

Effective Tuesday, February 6, parliamentary sessions will commence with the recitation of the national pledge following the implementation of the New Standing Orders.

Speaker Alban Bagbin in July last year made mention of this change during the launch of the Citizen’s Bureau.

According to Speaker Bagbin, this will foster patriotism as the words of the national pledge will speak to lawmakers.

“We must demonstrate patriotism in what we do. That is why in the New Standing Orders, we have included the recitation of the national pledge.

“Very important. Because if you are not patriotic, how can you lead. For him, it is imperative that leaders are true to the average Ghanaian they work for,” he said.

Under this updated framework, Members of Parliament will undergo a roll call and participate in reciting the national pledge at the beginning of proceedings.

This significant amendment in the new standing orders requires heads of institutions to personally appear before Parliament to address inquiries related to their agencies. This marks a departure from the previous protocol where Ministers of State could represent them during questioning.

Ahmed Ibrahim, the First Deputy Minority Whip in Parliament, elucidated on the revisions, emphasizing that autonomous bodies such as the Electoral Commission, CHRAJ boss, BoG governor, NCCE, and the Auditor General will now undergo scrutiny similar to ministers on the parliamentary floor.

“Independent bodies like the Electoral Commission, the CHRAJ boss, the BoG governor, NCCE, and the Auditor General will be subject to questioning just like ministers on the Floor, and the method of responding to questions on the Floor has also been outlined in the new Standing Orders.

“Previously, if the EC was invited, it could argue it had no audience on the Floor, and if the Common Fund administrator was required to attend, it would typically need the Minister’s presence. However, this is no longer the case.

“The administrator can now appear and be interrogated by a committee, responding to inquiries accordingly. The procedure for answering questions has been incorporated into the new Standing Orders.”

    National Pledge

I pledge myself to the service of Ghana, with all my strength and with all my heart. I promise to hold in high esteem our heritage, won for us through the blood and toil of our fathers; and I pledge myself in all things to uphold and defend the good name of Ghana. So help me God.

Akufo-Addo has introduced over 50 taxes since he came into power – Seth Terkper

Former Finance Minister Seth Terkper has asserted that the current tax regime in Ghana represents the most severe and punitive in the nation’s history.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by President Akufo-Addo of introducing over 50 new taxes since 2017.

In an interview on Citi News on Monday, Mr. Terkper emphasized that the country’s current tax rates are excessively high. He expressed concerns that such high rates could potentially drive individuals to seek ways to evade these taxes.

“I think we are seeing the worst of the tax system… It is the most punitive and worst tax structure that we have had. And as with every tax that is punitive, you will end up not collecting, or generating as much revenue as possible,” he said.

He further underscored that “But more importantly, when you begin to introduce punitive taxes, taxpayers find ways and means of evading and avoiding the tax. So if you have a simplified tax regime it is better and compliance increases. And the evidence is that if you look at our tax-to-GDP ratio well until recently as GRA is claiming, the highest point at which revenue was collected was 2015 per the percentage of GDP, not nominal terms.”

This continuous imposition of taxes has ignited public outrage in Ghana. Among the most recent taxes are the Value Added Tax (VAT) on residential electricity usage and the Emissions levy.

Ablakwa to relocate 300 more Akosombo dam spillage victims to fully furnished buildings

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has indicated that on Saturday, February 10, another set of 300 individuals displaced by the Akosombo Dam spillage will be relocated to a modern accommodation in Mepe as part of Safe Alternative Housing Initiative.

In December 2023, approximately 300 individuals were relocated to fully-furnished quarters.

The second batch mostly comprises the aged and the physically challenged. According to Mr Ablakwa in post on X, Tuesday, February 6, noted that the completed houses are disability-friendly.

“Accommodation and utilities would be free,” he added.

The project was undertaken by Construction Ambassadors of the First Sky Group for the building. On October 24, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, cut sod for the construction of a First Sky Group housing project to relocate 12,000 individuals in the constituency who have been displaced owing to flooding by the spillage of the Akosombo dam.

The relocation comes after the affected group had been residing temporarily at St. Kizito SHS.

The newly built facilities will be commissioned on February 10, and the special guest is former President John Mahama.

The spilling of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong Hydro Dams commenced on September 15 due to rising water levels. Several weeks into the spillage, numerous residents in the Lower Volta Basin suffered the loss of their homes and farmlands due to the resultant floods. A total of nine districts were affected by this event.

Heartbreaking stories emerged from the South, Central, and North Tongu districts of the Volta Region, where the devastation was particularly severe. Communities such as Battor, Tefle, Mepe, Sogakope, Adidome, and Anlo found themselves submerged under water. According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO), over 26,000 people were displaced and left homeless.

In response, various institutions and individuals stepped forward to provide relief items to the affected residents. Prominent political figures, including President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahama Bawumia, visited the impacted communities. Both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership and the Minority caucus extended their assistance to the flood victims.

“The Volta River Authority (VRA) wishes to inform the public, particularly residents living along the Lower Volta River and its environs that the controlled spillage from the Akosombo dam, which began on September 15, 2023, has ended,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has indicated that an amount of GHC220 million has been allocated by the government to support the many families and communities affected by the Akosombo dam spillage.

He made this known when he presented the 2024 budget statement in Parliament.

Focus on leaving a good legacy; don’t chase money if re-elected – Ya-Na advises Mahama

During a courtesy visit by former President John Mahama to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abubakari Mahama II, offered advice to Mahama regarding his potential re-election in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Ya-Na encouraged Mahama to prioritize leaving a meaningful legacy over accumulating personal wealth and properties.

Ya-Na cautioned Mahama against repeating the mistakes of his previous tenure and emphasized the importance of leadership focused on building a lasting legacy for the nation’s benefit.

He urged Mahama to consider the broader impact of his actions and decisions on the country, rather than solely focusing on personal gain.

“I believe you’re not coming to make more money for your family, but to leave a legacy that not only your children will be proud of but will pave the way for them wherever they may find themselves in the future when you are long gone to your maker.”

In addition, the Overlord of Dagbon also cautioned him about being wary of fake friends who could potentially undermine his government if he wins the 2024 elections.

“The most important thing for you at this stage of your political life is to be able to tell who your true friends are from the opportunistic ones. You were there once, and it shouldn’t be difficult for you to understand,” he advised.

Mr Mahama has ended his visit to the Northern Region as part of his. ‘Building Ghana Tour’. He visited Mion, Gushegu, and Yendi constituencies in the Northern Region.

Akufo-Addo got sick MPs to leave Germany to pass Emissions levy – Dr Kwabena Donkor claims

Former Power Minister Dr Kwabena Donkor is said to have alleged that some Members of Parliament belonging to the Majority Group were forced to fly into the country to pass the Emissions Levy despite their ill health.

In a post on X, GHOne quoted Dr Kwabena Donkor as to have said “People on medical treatment in Germany were flown back to vote and pass the Emission Levy.”

Information on the identities of the said legislators and their health status was not provided.

In December 2023, Parliament passed the Emissions Levy Bill, 2023, as a step towards decreasing Ghana’s Carbon Dioxide Emissions and generating additional domestic revenue for the government.

The members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament voiced concerns regarding the potential effects of the Levy on ordinary Ghanaians and its potential impact on the cost of doing business within the country.

NDC Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, highlighted that the Emissions Levy would entail taxing every vehicle utilizing internal combustion engines, including commercial motorbikes (okada), tricycles (pragyia), commercial taxis, ride-hailing services, commercial buses (trotro), and articulated trucks.

He said the Minority would not support the Bill and expressed the hope that the Government would listen and stop imposing taxes on the public.

However, had the number need to form a quorum and have the levy passed into law.

Effective February 1, motor vehicles, buses, and coaches up to 3000 cubic centimetres are required to pay GH₵150 per annum in line with the implementation of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112).

The levy is being imposed on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions specifically targeting internal combustion engine vehicles.

Also, motor vehicles, buses, and coaches above 3000 cubic centimetres, cargo trucks, and articulated trucks are required to pay GH₵300 per annum whereas motor riders and tricycle riders will pay the government an amount of GHC75 annually as part of their responsibilities to the state.

Per reports, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is facing technical challenges in the collection of the levy.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have called on the government to scrap the levy.

Atsu “is so wonderful” – Newcastle remembers late Ghanaian star a year after

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that shook Turkey and claimed the lives of over 50,000 including Ghanaian footballer, Christian Atsu.

In honouring his memory, Newcastle FC, a club Atsu used to play for, has paid tribute to the fallen hero.

In a post on X on February 6, 2024, Newcastle noted that the actions of Christian Atsu continues to linger in the heart of many he came in contact with.

According to the club, Atsu was an incredible person and will forever be in their thoughts.

“One year ago we sadly lost Christian Atsu in the most tragic of circumstances. An incredible person who is fondly remembered by everyone at Newcastle United. Our thoughts are forever with Christian’s family and friends. Oh he is so wonderful.”

In May 2017, Atsu signed a four-year deal to join Newcastle permanently for £6.2 million from Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Marie-Claire Rupio, the wife of the late Christian Atsu, has revealed to UK outlet The Athletic that she still sends WhatsApp messages to her deceased husband.

She admitted to questioning Atsu at times about why he is no longer alive and also mentioned messaging him when their children inquired about him.

Rupio, who is Portuguese, expressed that she does not have a specific coping mechanism and emphasised the mental challenges she faces, stating that she simply tries to navigate through each day.

“When people say, ‘How are you coping?’ I don’t cope. I just survive every day,” says Claire. “Mentally, you’re fine for a few days, maybe a week, but then lots of emotion comes.

“Sometimes I message Christian on WhatsApp; I just need to let it out,” she says. “‘Why are you not here?’ or maybe one of the kids needs him.”

Narrating how she received the news of her husband’s passing, she said Atsu’s agent, Nana Sechere, informed her at 3 a.m. while sobbing.

“It was around 3 am on Saturday, and when I saw Nana’s name come up on my phone.

“I picked up and he was just crying. He said, ‘I’m so sorry’, and he couldn’t say anything more.”

On Friday, March 17, former Black Stars player, Christian Atsu was laid to rest.

The funeral service was held at the forecourt of the State House. Several personalities were in attendance as well as members of the general public.

Atsu’s death continues to affect the lives of many who he positively had an impact on.

Freda Prempeh, Joseph Cudjoe, other Ministers to be sacked by Akufo-Addo after NPP primary loss – Report

An imminent reshuffle is expected to result in the dismissal of four Ministers of State, seven deputy ministers, and numerous Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of government agencies, according to reports.

The individuals facing dismissal are predominantly those who participated in the recent parliamentary primaries but were unsuccessful in their bids.

Joseph Cudjoe, the Minister of Public Enterprises and Member of Parliament (MP) for Effia in the Western Region, Dr. Freda Prempeh, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources and MP for Tano North in the Ahafo Region, and Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and MP for Walewale in the North East Region, all faced defeats during the party’s January 27, 2024 primaries.

Seth Kwame Acheampong, the Eastern Regional Minister, also lost the New Juaben North seat in the primaries.

Among the seven deputy ministers who were not re-elected are Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah, the Deputy Minister of Health and MP for Weija-Gbawe in the Greater Accra Region, and Mahama Asei Seini, the Deputy Minister of Health and MP for Daboya/Mankarigu in the Savannah Region.

Other deputies who were unsuccessful in their bids include Gifty Twum-Ampofo, the Deputy Minister of Education and MP for Abuakwa North in the Eastern Region, Ama Pomaa Boateng, the Deputy Minister of Communications and Digitalisation and MP for Juaben in the Ashanti Region, Collins Ntim, the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development and MP for Offinso North in the Ashanti Region, Bright Wireko-Brobbey, the Deputy Minister of Labour Relations and MP for Lower Hemang Denkyira in the Central Region, and Moses Anim, the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and MP for Trobu.

Ms. Mensah was defeated by Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Coastal Development Authority, while Mr. Seini lost to a former Deputy Minister of the Savannah Region, Samuel Tika. Mr. Wireko-Brobbey was defeated by the CEO of Export and Import Bank, Ghana, Lawrence Agyinsam, while Ms. Boateng and Mr. Ntim lost their re-election bid to Frank Owusu Achiaw and Fred Kyei Asamoah, respectively.

The decision to remove these officials was reportedly reached during a meeting held before the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primaries.

“It is unfortunate but they will be relieved of their duties in the coming days once the primaries are over and a winner is decided”, a report by Ghanaweb revealed.

This unconfirmed report comes after the sacking of 24 District Chief Executives by President Akufo-Addo over the weekend.

The President explained that this action is in accordance with Article 243 (3) b of the Constitution and section 20 (3) (b) of the Local Government Act, 2014, (Act 936).

In the letter signed on Friday, February 2, the President directed the affected DCEs to be notified of the revocation and instructed that replacements be nominated under separate cover.

The specific reasons for the revocation were not provided in the statement.

Among those affected by the president’s directive are, Martina Appiah Nyantakyi (Ahafo Ano North), Nii Larteh Ollenu (Amansie West), Daniel Owuredu (Nkoranza South), Alhaji Abdulai Adams (Pru East), Gmasombe Jerome Kofi Gyimah, (Sene East), Joseph Aidoo (Awutu Senya West), Samuel Kwame Agyekum (Asuogyaman), Seth Asante (Atiwa West), Comfort Asante (New Juaben North), Isaac Kwadzo Buabeng (Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Daniel Alexander Nii-Noi Adumua (Adentan) and Mohammed Bashiru Kamara (Ga Central).

While many continue to ponder over the rationale behind the president’s decision, financial analyst and US economist, Scott Bolshevik, has shared what he believes to be the reason behind the mass sacking of District Chief Executives by President Akufo-Addo.

According to Mr Bolshevik in a post on X, February 3, 2024, these DCEs were not dismissed due to their inefficiency or corruption-related activities, per his conversation with a Member of Parliament.

He noted that the 24 individuals were removed from post because the “preferred 24 candidates for president lost the recent elections.”

Mr Bolshevick said their continuous stay may impair the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s quest to become President, thus their appointments had to be revoked by the president.

“I had the privilege to talk to an MP The bizarre part was that the DCEs were sacked, not based on corruption or inefficiency It’s because the preferred 24 candidates for president lost the recent elections. This may impair Bawumia’s succession It has never been about you!” he wrote.

  • Cheddar could push 2024 presidential elections to a run-off – Dr Theo Acheampong

Cheddar could push 2024 presidential elections to a run-off – Dr Theo Acheampong

Political Risk Analyst, Dr. Theo Acheampong, has opined that the leader of The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, could potentially play a significant role in the 2024 presidential elections.

In a post on X on February 5, Dr Acheampong noted that Cheddar’s involvement could result in the elections not being decided in the first round, necessitating a run-off between the top candidates, the flagbearers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the political analyst, Nana Kwame Bediako could garner between three to five percent.

“A myriad of other independent candidates (the main one being Nana Kwame Bediako a.k.a. ‘Cheddar’) could pull a surprise and collectively get between 3%-5% of the poll, forcing a second-round,” he wrote.

Dr Acheamong noted that this assertion is not derived from a scientific approach, but rather, a hunch.

In January this year, the business mogul, Nana Kwame Bediako, unmasked himself as the face behind the New Force political movement, quickly jumping into the presidential race ahead of the December polls.

Since the announcement, Cheddar has been informing Ghanaians of his vision for the country. But some Ghanaians continue to focus on investigating his source of wealth and extravagant lifestyle.

Cheddar urged Ghanaians to shift their focus towards the positive contributions he can make to the nation, rather than scrutinizing the origins of his wealth.

In his perspective, inquiries into the source of his wealth amount to judgment and do not accurately reflect the dedication and hard work he has invested in amassing his prosperity.

Many believe that the New Force could be the third force to topple down the duopoly in Ghana’s political landscape.

You shall thirst no more if your son becomes president again – Mahama tells Ya-Na

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has assured Dagbon’s overlord, Ya-Naa Abukari II, that there will be improved conditions and support for the people of the Northern Region should he be declared president after the 2024 general elections.

The former president pledged that he would see to it that Ya-Na’s to see uninterrupted water supply, which was glossed over by the current NPP administration, would be fulfilled. The NDC flagbearer made emphasis on the abandoned Yendi Water project.

Mr Mahama made the announcement when he paid a courtesy call on Ya-Naa on Monday, February 5, 2024.

“With all the work we did, in terms of the Yendi water project, eight years after we left office, Yendi still has no water. I want to assure that if your son becomes president, you will not be thirsty anymore,” he said.

On his part, Yaa-Naa Abukari II, advised John Mahama, to regularly shuffle his appointees to ensure a selection of the best human resources for efficient governance if elected.

Ya-Naa emphasized that adopting this approach would be crucial for Mahama’s comeback bid in 2025 and urged him not to underestimate the importance of assembling a competent government.

“When you get the nod from Ghanaians, do not shy away from reshuffling your team to get the right ones on board by merits and competence and lay off even loyalists but misfits who will only churn out mediocrity for your government,” he said.

The Ya-Naa added, “This applies especially to your cabinet because they in reality rule you and the country. That will be a mistake no Ghanaian will forgive you if you happen to be the chosen one.”

Ya-Naa encouraged the former President to prioritize building a legacy over accumulating wealth for his family and friends.

“I believe you are not coming to make more money for your family but to leave a legacy that your children will not only be proud of but will pave the way for them wherever they find themselves in the future when you are long gone to your maker,” he added.

Bawumia is inexperienced; Ghana is too fragile for him to handle – KNUST-TEIN President tells Kofi Bentil

President of TEIN-KNUST, a tertiary students’ wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Abokyi, has chastised Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, for advocating for an opportunity for flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in his presidential ambition.

Mr Bentil over the weekend encouraged Ghanaians to give Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia a “fair and objective hearing” in his his quest to become President.

Mr Bentil expressed the belief that if given the opportunity as President of Ghana, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would do a better job.

Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa

According to him, Dr Bawumia “is like an advisor” as such his authority is restricted to specific areas of governance.

Nonetheless, he noted Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has excelled in his role and has demonstrated qualities and achievements that make him stand out when compared to other individuals who have held the position of Vice President in Ghana’s history.

Reacting to this, Samuel Abokyi, President of TEIN-KNUST, noted that Dr Bawumia’s limited achievements within the current administration cannot be disregarded.

“How can one absolve him from the prevailing chaos?”

“Dr. Bawumia boasts of spearheading digitalization and the issuance of the Ghana Card. He chairs the economic management team; hence, how can he evade responsibility for the economic hardships?

“As the vice president, he wields influence over policy direction and implementation, so how can he distance himself from the burden of exorbitant taxes imposed on citizens?

He emphasized that Mr. Bentil should lead an honest life as a responsible citizen, rather than living as a hypocrite.

“Former President John Mahama’s track record should not be disregarded, as he has made significant contributions to the nation, unlike a lackluster figure who has failed repeatedly.”

“Despite being the vice president, Dr. Bawumia has frequently assumed presidential duties during the president’s absence. Ghana cannot afford to gamble with an inexperienced individual who has faltered in various capacities.

“Ghana has transcended archaic democratic norms; it is imperative to elect a seasoned candidate rather than experiment with a failed vice president. The country requires a trustworthy leader, not a vacillating individual,” he added.

He continued; “In any respectable nation, Dr. Bawumia would not be taken seriously; his contradictory statements about his authority in government and his role in championing digitalization epitomize sheer absurdity.

“Dr. Bawumia was touted for his economic acumen, yet the state of Ghana’s economy is in disarray, far removed from his embellished claims. If economic indicators miraculously improve, credit would swiftly be attributed to him; however, in times of turmoil, blame is shifted to the president.”

NAPO can ensure NPP wins back votes lost to Alan if made Bawumia’s running mate – Political analyst

Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, if chosen as the running mate for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, could help the party regain votes that have been lost to the leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen.

This assertion has been communicated by Political Risk Analyst, Dr. Theo Acheampong, who holds the position that a running mate from the Ashanti Region could mitigate the effects the breakaway of Mr Kyerematen would have on the ruling party.

Delving into regionalism and apathy ahead of the 2024 general elections, Dr Acheampong stated that “the Akan vote (the biggest ethnic bloc) could fracture in unpredictable ways given Alan Kyeramaten’s breakaway Movement for Change. This, however, can also be mitigated by choice of running mate for the NPP. Most indications and sources point to NAPO becoming the running mate to VP Bawumia.”

In his February 5 post on X, the political risk analyst noted that “the NPP will sustain gains made in the Northeast of the country more so given VP Bawumia comes from there.”

“Other key battleground regions will be Central and Western,” he added.

Dr Acheamong noted that this assertion is not derived from a scientific approach, but rather, a hunch.

In September 2023, former presidential aspirant of the NPP, Alan Kyerematen, who is also a former Trade Minister exited the NPP due to challenges with electoral process, change in the aim of the party, among others.

He broke away to form the Movement for Change to enable him to contest the 2024 presidential elections as an Independent Candidate.

Many in the political field believe Alan’s exit will cost the NPP.

  • NDC will receive massive support from swing voters in Accra in 2024 elections – Theo Acheampong

NDC will receive massive support from swing voters in Accra in 2024 elections – Theo Acheampong

Political Risk Analyst, Dr. Theo Acheampong, has suggested that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) being led by former President John Dramani Mahama will garner significant backing from swing voters during the 2024 elections.

In a post on X, Monday, February 5, Dr Acheamong noted that this assertion is not derived from a scientific approach but rather a hunch.

He explained that the NDC will beat the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Accra due to the high cost of living in the country’s capital, as well as corruption.

He wrote, “Swing voters in Greater Accra favouring Former President Mahama and the NDC; my hunch [unscientific opinion] is that the NDC will most likely win the Greater Accra region on account of recent economic issues [inflation & cost of living; DDEP, corruption perceptions, etc.].”

“There have been some economic improvements in recent months, and this is likely to be sustained in 2024 and beyond. However, I do wonder if this will be enough to change the minds of swing voters,” he added.

Since 2021, the prices of goods and services have been record-high. From over 50 percent inflation rate, Ghana is currently working a little over 20 percent.

With regards to corruption, reports indicate that the government has for the past four years, not done much to address the menace.

In the 2020 presidential elections, John Mahama, secured majority of the votes; 1,326,596, representing 51.04% while President Akufo-Addo polled 1,250,174 votes, representing 48.10%.

52 structures burnt to ashes in Ayigbetown fire incident

An inferno has swept through Ayigbetown, a suburb in the Tema metropolis, leaving scores of residents homeless as over 52 structures were engulfed in flames.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire originated from a wooden structure on Sunday night when a young man attempted to connect a regulator to a gas cylinder near an open fire.

The fire quickly spread, consuming numerous homes and displacing many families, per a video shared by AdomNews.

Confirming the tragic incident, Ebenezer Yenzu, the Public Relations Officer for the Fire Service in the Tema region, urged residents to adhere to safety standards when handling gas cylinders to prevent similar disasters in the future.

Ebi Bright, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the Tema Central constituency, criticized the government for its failure to address the housing needs of squatters in the affected area.

Accra’s air quality is one of the deadliest in the world – Report

A recent report by IQAir has ranked Accra as the city with the poorest air quality and highest pollution levels.

The report highlights PM2.5 as the primary pollutant in Accra’s atmosphere, with levels currently exceeding the WHO annual air quality guideline value by 63.1 times.

In response to this concerning data, IQAir has emphasized the urgent need for action to address the air quality crisis in Accra.

Recommendations provided include wearing masks, avoiding outdoor activities during peak pollution hours, maintaining clean indoor air, reducing energy consumption, utilizing public transportation, and increasing tree planting efforts.

Industrial activities, transportation, and residential energy usage are identified as the primary contributors to air pollution in Accra.

The presence of high levels of particulate matter poses significant health risks, particularly related to cardiovascular and respiratory issues. PM2.5 particles, due to their minuscule size, can infiltrate the bloodstream through the lungs, leading to potential damage to various organ systems such as the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Health risks associated with prolonged exposure to elevated air pollution levels include increased rates of ischemic heart disease, heart attacks, arrhythmia, and damage to vital organs caused by reduced oxygen supply.

On February 5, the Ghana Meteorological Agency warned that the air quality in Ghana’s capital, Accra is very unhealthy.

The Agency in a circular on social media noted that the challenge is caused by dust particles in the air. However, the Agency has said that the situation will improve by the middle of the week, as more moisture will enter the atmosphere and reduce the dust in Accra.

  • Govt is selling AirtelTigo to British investor, Ian Hannam, for peanut – Bright Simons

Govt is selling AirtelTigo to British investor, Ian Hannam, for peanut – Bright Simons

Vice President of think-thank IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, Bright Simons, has alleged that government is selling telecommunications company, AirtelTigo to British investor Ian Hannam for an insignificant amount of money.

According to Mr Simons, the selling price of $175 million with a government stake of 15% is far below what is considered reasonable.

In a post on X platform, Monday, February 5, he explained that “judging from the reported valuation of AirtelTigo (~$175m) alone, this looks like a steal for Hannam. It means Hannam is buying each AT subscriber for just $26!.”

He recalled that in 2022, Telecel paid $67 for each Vodafone subscriber and in 2009, Vodafone paid $710 for each GT subscriber.

“In 2006, MTN paid ~$745 for each Areeba subscriber – In 2008, Celtel paid ~$53k per Westel subscriber (this was really mostly for the licenses) – In 2010, Airtel bought Zain’s subs in Ghana at about $267 each,” he added.

Mr Simons therefore concluded that the telecommunications business in the country is declining due to such an action taken by the government.

In February 2023, the Attorney General, after a thorough assessment has approved the sale of Vodafone Ghana to Telecel.

The Finance Ministry had earlier written to the Attorney General with a request for a review of all relevant transaction documents on the transfer of 70 percent majority shares in Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited (Vodafone Ghana) held by Vodafone International Holdings B.V. to Telecel Group with a view to carrying out due diligence for the transaction and providing legal advice.

Commenting on the details of the transactions after the review the Attorney General indicated that the documents provided met all the conditions per Section 98 of the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992), Regulations 34 of the Regulations and Articles 14 & 15 of the Shareholders’ Agreement.

We won’t support you if you fail to implement programme – IMF ‘warns’ Ghana

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has emphasized the significance of Ghana adhering to the support program it is currently implementing over the next three years.

Director of the African Regional Department at the IMF, Abebe Aemro Selassie, stressed the importance of Ghana’s full implementation of the program while addressing the press.

Selassie highlighted the necessity for Ghana to fully implement the program, indicating that the IMF will maintain its support for the country only in alignment with the implementation of the program.

“What I can say is that going forward would be really really important that Ghana continues to implement the programme that they have developed as envisaged. That is really critical”.

“These programmes are designed to be implemented over three to four years. And it is important that you stick…Ghana’s sticks the course and see the programme being implemented over the next three years. So, we look forward to continuing to support Ghana, consistent with program implementation”, he explained.

He emphasized that official creditors have indicated their willingness to provide debt relief in line with Ghana’s requirements. He assured support from his organization to ensure that Ghana avoids prolonged negotiations with external creditors due to their insistence on equal terms.

The government is actively engaged in negotiations to finalize a deal with bilateral and commercial creditors for debt restructuring. However, there are concerns that the insistence on equal treatment for all creditors could prolong the process and have adverse effects on Ghana’s program and economy.

Ghana has already received a $1.2 billion bailout package from the IMF as part of the three-year program.

Court throws out case against Prof Dominic Fobih for marrying 30-year-old Mary

The High Court at Cape Coast has issued a directive to Professor Dominic Fobih, a former Education Minister during the Kufuor administration, urging him to extend forgiveness to his son and nephew over their objections to his marriage to a 30-year-old woman named Mary Nyamekye Oduro.

In its ruling, the court emphasized that there were no justifiable grounds for the objections raised against the 80-year-old professor’s decision to marry Mary. The court expressed its support for the union, stating that it saw no reason why Professor Fobih should not be allowed to marry the love of his life.

The case gained significant public attention in May 2023 when a video of the former minister’s traditional wedding went viral. The objectors, who were identified as the professor’s son and nephew, argued that his decision to marry Mary was irrational, citing his previous stroke and the significant age gap of about fifty years between the couple as potential obstacles to a successful marriage.

They also raised concerns about Mary’s alleged infidelity and her purported ulterior motives for marrying a much older man.

Additionally, the objectors questioned whether Professor Fobih was still legally bound to another woman, Beatrice Boateng, whom he claimed to have divorced in 2020 through customary means. However, the court determined that the marriage between Professor Fobih and Beatrice Boateng had indeed been dissolved, dismissing the objectors’ claims as baseless.

Consequently, the court ruled in favor of Professor Fobih and Mary Nyamekye, declaring them eligible to marry. Furthermore, the court instructed Professor Fobih to forgive his son, Dr. Nick Fobih, and nephew, Nicholas Fobih, for their objections to the marriage. The court also imposed financial penalties of GHC 20,000 against each of the three objectors as costs incurred during the legal proceedings.

  • Ghana is the best, invest in Africa’s mining hub – Lands Minister to investors

Ghana is the best, invest in Africa’s mining hub – Lands Minister to investors

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, has delivered a compelling address at the thirtieth anniversary of the Investing in African Mining Indaba held at the Cape Town, on Monday, 5th February, 2024.

He made a resounding call to “Invest in the number one mining destination of Africa, Ghana.

Ghana’s mining legacy, spanning over a century, was highlighted by the Minister as he emphasized the diverse mineral wealth the country possesses, including gold, diamond, bauxite, manganese, lithium, iron ore, copper, zinc, nickel, chrome, lead, and salt.

Underlining Ghana’s gold production leadership on the continent, he reported an unprecedented four million ounces produced last year, with plans for expansion and the addition of three new gold mines in the country.

“We have three (3) new gold mines currently under construction, one by Newmont in the middle belt of the country, and two in Northern Ghana, by Cardinal Namdini and Azumah Resources, with Cardinal Namdini’s Project expected to pour its first gold this year. With these new mines, and the expansion of existing ones, we expect to increase gold output to some four point five million ounces (4,500,000 oz), annually, ” he explained.

Breaking away from the conventional notion that gold was exclusive to the southern part of Ghana, the Minister revealed new gold deposits identified in the Savannah Region, inviting investors to join in the exploration of this promising frontier, in Ghana know as the “Dollar Power.”

The Minister also detailed Ghana’s commitment to value addition in mineral resources, showcasing a new four hundred kilogramme (400kg) capacity gold refinery.

Fruitful discussions with South Africa’s Rand Refinery were disclosed, indicating progress toward securing a London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) certification.

“Beyond gold, Ghana is strategically leveraging over nine hundred million metric tonnes (900,000,000MMt) of bauxite resources to build an integrated aluminum industry.”

The Minister highlighted initiatives, such as the construction of a US$450,000,000.00 manganese refinery and the establishment of the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) to harness iron ore resources for an integrated iron and steel industry.

Addressing the lithium market, the Minister affirmed Ghana’s commitment to value addition, echoing a firm stance against the raw export of lithium resources. This commitment aligns with Ghana’s Green Minerals Policy, aiming to contribute to the global green energy transition.

“And if we have not said it loud enough, permit me to repeat, Ladies and Gentlemen, under NO circumstance will we export our lithium resources in their raw state,” he stressed.

The Minister underscored Ghana’s dedication to using mining as a catalyst for sustainable development. Policy and legislative reforms since 2017 have prioritized efficient exploitation, environmental protection, value addition, local content, and local participation.

The government aims to shift from the traditional “dig and ship” model to a new era of beneficiation, ensuring optimal returns and investment security.

Highlighting opportunities across the entire mining value chain, the Minister emphasized the potential for exploration, mining, refining, processing, and downstream industries.

Ghana’s strategic location and the benefits of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) were presented as key advantages, enabling investors to use Ghana as a launchpad to reach the broader African market.

Mr Jinapor in his address assured the global investor community of Ghana’s readiness for business, backed by a stable democracy and a progressive fiscal regime.

Ghana, “the beacon of democracy in Africa,” offers an attractive investment destination with ease of access to geological information, transparent governance institutions, and highly skilled mining personnel.

The Lands Minister wooed investors of Africa and on the global scale to invest in Ghana, showcasing the country for its rich mining potential and inviting them to join in the exciting journey towards sustainable and mutually beneficial mining ventures.

The Police Service earlier apprehended 22 individuals in connection with the attack, bringing the total number of suspects so far arrested to 71.

The suspects, together with some others currently on the run, attacked the Bepong Chief’s Palace on February 4, 2024, and injured seven people, including five police officers.

They also vandalized a police vehicle and six police motorbikes, as well as three private vehicles. The suspects also caused damage to sections of the palace and an adjoining building.

Upon initial investigation and screening of the suspects, 40 of them, who have so far been identified as having played various roles in the attacks and have been linked to available evidence, have been detained to assist in the investigation.

The police officers came under attack at the palace when they were called on February 4, 2024, to take over a murder suspect, one Kwasi Nyarko, who had been arrested by some community members and sent to the Bepong Chief’s Palace awaiting the arrival of the Police.

Some members of the community, including those in police custody, who had heard about the arrest of suspect Kwasi Nyarko had besieged the palace in the hopes of lynching the suspect.

The police reported that a reinforcement team, collaborating with the local police, has successfully restored calm and normalized the situation.

Efforts are underway to apprehend additional suspects, ensuring they face legal consequences.

The police service has committed to providing comprehensive details of the incident in due course as they continue their investigations.

Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, has expressed concern that the conflict of interest and abuse of power in the public sector have eroded the confidence of citizens in public officials.

The Chairman of the Committee of Parliament Members Holding Office of Profit made this statement in his opening speech read on his behalf by Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, MP for Asante Akim North constituency and also a member of the Committee at a three-day workshop at Alisa Hotel in Accra.

Mr Amoako Asiamah entreated public officials to build trust, maintain integrity and ensure that decisions are made in the best interests of the general public.

He added that, “addressing a conflict of interest is an ongoing process and not a one-time solution and therefore reducing conflict of interest and abuse of power among public officials requires a multi-pronged approach targeting both prevention and mitigating strategies.”

Facilitators for the workshop were Prof.Justice Bawole, Dean of the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and Prof. Ernest Kofi Abotsi, Dean University of Professional Studies (UPSA) Law School.

In accepting to honour the invitation last week, the Rt. Hon. Speaker expressed his appreciation to Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and noted that it would be a delight to witness the regalia and the many cherished items the British took away during the Sagrenti war.

He used the opportunity to narrate how important “Sagrenti” war which was coined by Sir Garnet Wolsely meant to the Ashanti Kingdom.

He was also in agreement with the assertion that the Ashanti Kingdom and for that matter Ghana, must use negotiations to get back all the items the British took during the war because they had already admitted that it was stolen from the palace.

He proposed to the delegation to deliberately organise similar programmes to teach the youth about the history of the Ashanti kingdom to break the level of inferiority complex in the youth and how they can explore opportunities in other African countries and beyond.

Reshuffle appointees as much as possible in next administration – Yaa-Naa to Mahama

Dagbon’s overlord, Yaa-Naa Abukari II, has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, to regularly shuffle his appointees to ensure a selection of the best human resources for efficient governance if elected.

Yaa-Naa emphasized that adopting this approach would be crucial for Mahama’s comeback bid in 2025 and urged him not to underestimate the importance of assembling a competent government.

The speech conveying this message was delivered on behalf of Yaa-Naa on February 5.

“When you get the nod from Ghanaians, do not shy away from reshuffling your team to get the right ones on board by merits and competence and lay off even loyalists but misfits who will only churn out mediocrity for your government,” he said.

The Yaa-Naa added, “This applies especially to your cabinet because they in reality rule you and the country. That will be a mistake no Ghanaian will forgive you if you happen to be the chosen one.”

Yaa-Naa encouraged the former President to prioritize building a legacy over accumulating wealth for his family and friends.

“I believe you are not coming to make more money for your family but to leave a legacy that your children will not only be proud of but will pave the way for them wherever they find themselves in the future when you are long gone to your maker,” he added.

In his remarks, the NDC flagbearer praised Ya-Naa for his role in restoring peace in Dagbon and emphasized the importance of addressing security challenges.

Mr Mahama commended the Yaa-Naa for collaborating with local authorities to address issues of armed robbery in the area and pledged to expedite the completion of the delayed water treatment facility.

“Help please, Moesha Boduong can die!” – Sally Mann ‘begs’ Ghanaians

Entertainment pundit Sally Mann broke down in tears as she passionately appealed to the public to contribute to Moesha Boduong’s GoFundMe account, set up to aid her in her current health crisis.

Expressing frustration about judgmental attitudes towards Moesha’s past actions, Sally Mann urged people not to criticize but instead focus on supporting her during these challenging times.

In an emotional interview with Power FM, Sally Mann implored the public to contribute to Moesha’s GoFundMe, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and the potential consequences if assistance is not provided.

“I beg Ghanaians that if there is a way that we can save that girl’s [Moesha] life, we should help. Because people’s ways are not God’s ways. Maybe you think she is a waste but for all you know she might even be saved in heaven when the time comes.

“If you’re not going to help don’t stop people from helping her because she is sick and she can die. if that happens, what would you gain from it? Don’t look at what she has done with her life, help her because she is somebody’s daughter,” she said amid tears.

Sally’s remarks come in the wake of public criticism towards Moesha Boduong, with some questioning her financial preparedness during her past lifestyle and relationships with wealthy individuals.

Moesha’s brother, Ebito, confirmed her critical health condition due to a stroke and issued a plea for financial assistance through a GoFundMe account.

Ebito Bodoung emphasized the urgency of Moesha’s medical needs, detailing the impairment of her mobility and speech.

The public is urged to contribute to the fund, which has a target of $10,000 (GHC123,600), covering expenses such as therapy sessions and assistive devices for Moesha’s recovery.

Several individuals have already made donations since the fundraising campaign began.

So, the family latter arranged for her fiancé to be arrested because they held him accountable for whatever had happened to grace. That is where I took over the case from,” he said.

According to lawyer Ampaw, this incident got his client, Pastor Kingsley Gyamfi, arrested after the family blamed him for their daughter’s sorry state.

Executive Director of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), Maame Tiwa Addo Danquah, has called on all Ghanaians to actively engage in the fight against corruption.

Emphasizing that the battle against corruption cannot be won solely by politicians and public officeholders, she stressed the need for collective efforts.

Her comments come in response to Ghana’s 43rd position in the latest corruption perception index.

Maame Tiwa Addo Danquah urged people to volunteer information to strengthen the fight against corruption and emphasized the importance of citizen participation in addressing this societal challenge.

We will work with catch them young agenda – Mahama on building Black Stars

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has indicated plans to build a new Black Stars team around homegrown footballers if elected President in the 2024 elections.

The decision comes in response to Ghana’s disappointing performance at the recent African Cup of Nations, where the team exited the competition at the group stage for the second consecutive time.

Former President Mahama attributed the Black Stars‘ poor performance to the absence of colts football, which plays a crucial role in developing footballers at the early stages.

“We just came from the Africa Cup of Nations, and we performed abysmally. We performed abysmally because we are not growing our football,” observed Mahama.

“Before we used to have the colts and every district used to organize its colts’ league and they picked the prominent players from there. We used to have the academicals where the schools played against each other and we picked the promising players from there before we come to U-17 and then all the other age groups. Unfortunately, all that has collapsed and so we are going to work with the Football Association to start catching them young so that we can train them and give them to local teams to get experience.”

During a community engagement at Bongo as part of the NDC’s “Building Ghana Tour,” John Dramani Mahama addressed the community’s request for the construction of an astro turf for football development.

The NDC flagbearer pledged that if elected, together with the Ghana Football Association, they will build the Black Stars with homegrown players. Mahama emphasized the importance of nurturing talent at the grassroots level and did not discount the possibility of blending them with some foreign-based Ghanaian players.

“We will build a new Black Stars based on homegrown players, domestic players who have trained together for a long term and work as a team and then we bring the foreign ones to come and blend with them. If you bring only foreign-based players who don’t play together, they play in their individual teams and then when there’s time for competition you bring them and tell them to play it won’t work,” he added.

  • Appeal to investors but ensure value addition – Lands Minister to African leaders

Appeal to investors but ensure value addition – Lands Minister to African leaders

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor has urged African countries to make investment opportunities attractive for investors while insisting on the importance of value addition for the growth of their country’s mineral infrastructure.

He stressed the need to move away from the “dig and ship” approach and highlighted two essential pillars to help achieve that: first, insisting on value addition, and local participation; and second, ensuring that states and governments provide the necessary infrastructure and environment, including cadastre and other facilitated systems, for investors to operate, optimize, and maximize benefits shared equitably.

The Minister emphasized, “You cannot achieve value addition or participate at the highest end of the value chain if the government doesn’t establish a proper, investor-friendly environment. It’s crucial, and governments must prioritize this.”

The Minister was contributing to a Ministerial Symposium panel discussion on the topic; “Pushing Africa into a new investment era with solutions to the continent’s greatest challenges” at the ongoing “African Mining Indaba” conference in Cape Town, South Africa, on Sunday, 4th February, 2024.

He added that fundamental elements, such as a solid and consistent rail system, reliable infrastructure, and power systems, must be in place to attract private entities effectively.

Using Ghana as a case study, Samuel Abu Jinapor explained the importance of having a policy framework where both the state and investors play their roles effectively.

Taking the example of bauxite, he mentioned Ghana’s efforts to build an integrated aluminum industry with a policy framework supervised by President Akufo-Addo.

The goal is to exploit and manage resources efficiently while striking a balance between value addition, indigenous participation, and creating mutually satisfactory arrangements.

Minister Jinapor acknowledged the challenge of changing government policies in some African countries but emphasized the need for sustainable policies that serve the continent’s best interests.

Highlighting successful private sector participation and investment in Ghana, he pointed to the establishment of an automobile industry, attributing it to a sensible policy framework aligned with the primary goal of private sector investments – making a profit.

The Minister advocated for synchronized policy frameworks across Africa to universally promote value addition, citing the African Mining Vision as a guiding principle. He also mentioned the collaborative effort of Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire in structuring a common market pricing on cocoa as a positive example of African collaboration for growth.

Hon. Jinapor and the other panelists in the end agreed that the new perspective on mining sector investment in Africa, should be envisioning a shift from the “rich Africa with poor Africans” model to one resulting in “rich Africans from rich Africa,” catalyzed by mining.

The Ministerial Symposium is a high-level, invite-only policy roundtable, that brings together Mining Ministers to develop and discuss a shared vision for Africa’s future sustainable mining and mineral value supply chains. The Symposium aims to strengthen collaboration between government, investors, and the private sector in order to improve bilateral relationships across the continent.

24 DCEs were not fired due to Bawumia’s performance in their areas – Dan Botwe

The Minister for Local Government and Rural Decentralisation, Dan Botwe, has refuted allegations that the dismissal of 24 District Chief Executives was based on the performance of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in their respective areas.

Mr Botwe dismissed these claims as entirely false and urged Ghanaians not to entertain such notions.

In an interview with Asaase Radio on Monday, February 5, the Okere Member of Parliament emphasized that the election results of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential election in the various districts are available for anyone to reference before making any such insinuations.

He asserted that the President has the prerogative to reshuffle his government without providing reasons to anyone.

Nevertheless, he explained that the decision to dismiss the District Chief Executives was in line with President Akufo-Addo’s aspiration to create a formidable team to advance the government’s agenda.

“In all the 275 constituencies that the primaries were held, the figures are there, the Electoral Commission and media has the figures, so one will have to rank them from the least to see whether this supports those assertions [reports],” he said.

“It is totally false …” Botwe added.

On Friday, February 2, the President revoked the appointments of 24 District Chief Executives (DCEs) nationwide, without providing specific reasons for the revocation.

In a letter issued hours later, the President announced the appointment of 26 new DCEs to replace those who had been dismissed. The appointment letter, signed on Saturday, February 3, stated that the appointments are “pending their approval by their respective assemblies.”

Following these developments, speculations have arisen, with some reports suggesting that the dismissals occurred in areas where the 2024 presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, performed poorly in the party’s primaries last year.

Ghanaian traders at risk in Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali over potential border closure

A potential diplomatic tension is on the horizon as Burkina Faso’s military leader, Ibrahim Traoré, has revealed that his country will engage in consultations with Mali and Niger before making a final decision on whether to permit Ghanaian traders and other West African nationals to conduct business in their countries.

The military leader stated that a conclusive decision would be reached after leaders from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso engage in consultations on the matter.

”We remain pan-African. Anyone in Africa or an African who wants to come to Burkina is welcome. We will decide what measures to take in due course regarding traders coming from Ghana, Nigeria, and other West African countries,” he said.

The three nations, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, officially declared last week their decision to exit the sub-regional ECOWAS trading bloc.

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has expressed concerns about potential disruptions to its supply chain within West Africa following the recent announcement.

According to the President of the Association, Dr. Joseph Obeng, the departure of these countries could create more hurdles in doing business.

“It will surely have an impact, and we do not know how it’s going to affect the free flow of traffic and humans. The earlier we try to find a solution to this better,” he said.

On his part, President Akufo-Addo has expressed regret over the unfortunate decision made by Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso to withdraw their membership from ECOWAS.

As the former ECOWAS Chair, President Akufo-Addo noted that this decision would have repercussions for the citizens of these nations.

He mentioned that discussions were pending to assess the consequences of their withdrawal and determine the next steps forward.

Compensate famers affected by Bird Flu – PAC orders Agric Ministry

Parliament has instructed the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) to compensate farmers who suffered losses due to the avian influenza or Bird Flu outbreak between 2015 and 2018.

The 2022 Auditor General’s Report revealed that a substantial amount of the allocated compensation funds, exceeding GH¢1.8 million, remains unutilized in the Ministry’s account.

The Ministry of Agriculture asserted that the funds were not distributed because affected farmers had not provided the necessary details.

However, during a Public Accounts Committee session, the committee’s chairman, James Klutse Avedzi, directed the Agriculture Ministry to identify the affected farmers and disburse the funds within the next month.

“I am sure you have a list of the farms that are affected and a certificate for destroying the birds as well. All that you need is to have the affected farmers’ bank details to do the transfer and I am sure that you have the contact details of these farmers.

“So we are giving you one month to disburse the monies to them quickly. Call them so that they will give their bank details so you can do the transfer for them.”

  • I made reference to NAPO and not Asantehene when I was flexing my power – Wontumi

I made reference to NAPO and not Asantehene when I was flexing my power – Wontumi

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has disclosed the identity of the individual he made reference to when having a confrontation with an executive of the party in Manhyia during a vetting process.

The Kokosohene accused Chairman Wontumi of disrespecting the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, alleging that Wontumi had claimed he could challenge the Asantehene if dissatisfied with his decisions.

Addressing the caretakers of the Antoa Shrine on the matter, Chairman Wontumi clarified that when he mentioned having his own kingdom, he was referring to a political kingdom.

He refuted the claim that he had stated he could challenge Otumfuo, asserting that this part of his statement was directed towards Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO.

“I didn’t even think of it (disrespecting the Asantehene)… It is not true. I mentioned a name. I said do you think I’m afraid of NAPO. I mentioned a name.

“Nananom, with all due respect, it was NAPO, the MP, who had arrived and I said ‘Do you think I’m afraid of him? Why are you being hypocritical? Do you think I’m afraid of him? Why should I praise him when he has done nothing for me? Why should I speak about him with fear,’” he said in Twi, in an audio recording of what transpired when the two men met at the Antoa Shrine.

The audio clip was shared by Kumasi-based Oheneba Media.

The Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Wontumi, added, “It was him (the Kokosohene) who mentioned the name of his majesty and I said ‘Eiii what problem are you trying to cause’. Within one minute of my saying this, this woman – the NPP woman’s organizer, said ‘I was speaking about a political kingdom’… I was referring to NAPO.”

But Nana Kwaku Duah insisted that Wontumi’s derogatory remarks were directed at Otumfuo, saying, “He said it, I was sitting by him”.

In response to an alleged accusation by the Kokosohene that Chairman Wontumi disrespected the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Chairman Wontumi is reported to have invoked the Antoa deity, cursing the Kokosohene and his family.

The Asanteman Tradition Council intervened in the matter and directed both parties to present themselves at the Antoa Shrine for arbitration and rituals to nullify the deity’s curse.

However, conflicting narratives during the sacred proceedings led the caretakers of the Antoa Shrine to direct them back to Manhyia for a more thorough resolution.

The Asanteman Traditional Council previously cleared Chairman Wontumi of the allegations, but the curse placed on the Kokosohene remains unresolved until a comprehensive settlement is reached at Manhyia.

Over the weekend, a remembrance service was held for JB Danquah at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Kyebi and in attendance were President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumiah, Majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Dan Kwaku Botwe, several Ministers of State and Members of Parliament.

In his speech, Most Rev. Dr. Abraham Opare Kwakye suggested that the family and friends should focus on promoting freedom, justice, and respect for traditional institutions, using Dr. J. B. Danquah’s ideals as a guide.

In a tribute, Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori recognized Dr. J. B. Danquah’s contributions to Okyeman, Akan cultural heritage, the country’s independence struggle, the defense of democracy, and the fight against authoritarianism and arbitrariness. These contributions, according to Okyenhene, hold a unique place in the history of Ghana.

He noted that JB Danquah went through so much trouble and even in death, he was being punished as he was not given a befitting burial.

“Under the imprimatur orders of the CPP leadership, Dr. Danquah was arrested on the 8th January, 1964, admitted to the Nsawam prisons condemned cells, a cell which was not suitable for a man of his condition and age.  The man who had high blood pressure and suffered asthma was put in a cell where he could neither stand nor walk, fed on gari, salt and water and endured other forms of inhuman treatment till the day he collapsed and died on 4th February, 1965,”  Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panie said.

He added, “The Nkrumah led CPP government decreed that the burial was to be held within 12 hours.  His body was not to be publicly laid in state and there was to be no public mourning and crying.

“The District Commissioner received orders from Accra and a team of Officers and men from the Army and the Police were dispatched to Kyebi to ensure compliance.  For 59 years, Dr. Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah was denied a funeral rite, the most sacred of all rites of passage.”

Nonetheless, he indicated that “as time is the great healer of wounds, the functionaries of the Nkrumah-led CPP and their assigns can and should be forgiven.”

Osagyefo described Dr. Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah as the epitome and embodiment of the respect of human dignity, the culture and traditions of all peoples and the love for freedom of all men.

‘May the vision of Dr. J. B. Danquah and the challenges of his times guide us all towards this goal of preserving and entrenching the culture of peacefulness, respect for personal freedom, and political pluralism enjoyed by the people of Ghana ‘ Okyehene said.
