There is nothing wrong with students sitting on the floor to learn – Old Tafo MP

Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo constituency, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has emphasized his belief that it is better for students to study under trees without the necessary infrastructure than to go without formal education.

This statement was made as he strongly defended the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, asserting that it should not be subjected to a review. Mr Assafuah expressed this viewpoint during an interview on CitiTV’s Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu.

“For me, it is better for a young person to sit on the floor without a desk to learn rather than not being educated. It is better for a young person to go to school without a slipper and be educated than not being educated at all,” he said.

This statement comes in response to recent calls for a review of the Free SHS policy. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, has also opposed these calls, asserting that the policy does not require any revision.

Mr Assafuah acknowledged challenges in the education sector but maintained that reviewing the policy is not the solution. He emphasized the need for collective leadership support for the policy, underscoring that despite challenges, students are receiving education, which he deems crucial.

Assafuah stressed the importance of providing education for the future generation and urged all Ghanaians to collaborate in addressing challenges instead of advocating for a review of the Free SHS policy.

Ghana has for years been battling with providing quality education. Students in primary schools in most parts of the country lack the needed infrastructure for teaching and learning to take place. In some communities, the way out has been establishing schools under trees.

Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has disclosed that the government needs to build an additional 5,000 additional school blocks to achieve parity in the provision of educational infrastructure for basic education in the country.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Citi TV and Citi FM, the education advocate said the lack of infrastructure is encouraging parents to take their children to the farm instead of sending them to school. He further stated that the government is doing too little to resolve this challenge.

Ayite Kortor Queen mother tried for duping job applicants of GHC93,000

Queen mother of Ayite Kortor, Jewel Oquaye Prempeh, has been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court on charges of defrauding by false pretenses.

She allegedly collected GH₵93,000 with the promise of enlisting 15 applicants into various Ghanaian security services and institutions but failed to fulfill the commitment.

During the court appearance, Jewel pleaded not guilty to the charges but expressed her intention to refund the money to the complainant. The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Daniel Danku, did not oppose bail but requested that the conditions ensure the accused’s attendance in court.

The prosecution outlined that the complainant, Osman Zakari, was a businessman residing in Abeka, Accra, while the accused was the queen mother of Ayite Kortor Community in Madina, Accra.

In 2021, the accused allegedly informed the complainant about recruitment opportunities in various institutions, claiming to have connections in high-profile government offices.

After the complainant expressed interest, Jewel reportedly collected GH₵93,000 as an initial payment and obtained soft copies of certificates and application forms from 15 applicants. Despite promises to secure jobs within two months, the accused allegedly failed to deliver and went into hiding.

Following a police report, Jewel was arrested, and in her investigation caution statement, she admitted to collecting the money but failing to secure jobs for the applicants.

The court granted her bail in the sum of GH₵100,000 with one Ghanaian citizen as a surety. The case has been adjourned to February 14, 2024.

Agbogloshie residents chide govt for abandoning reclaimed site now turned refuse ground

Some Agbogloshie residents have criticised the government for allowing the 80-acre land at Agbogloshie which was reclaimed from onion sellers to devolve into a site for open defecation and an unauthorized dumpsite.

Residents, sharing their sentiments with the Daily Graphic, expressed disappointment with the current state of affairs, stating that they had initially held high expectations for the area when the onion sellers were relocated in 2021.

The residents believe that the unfolding events are a clear indication that the government might have had a different motive for relocating the traders, given the current lack of progress and development on the reclaimed land.

A trader, who gave his name as Emmanuel Asare, said: “I was very happy when the scrap dealers who were polluting the area were relocated.”

“I had hopes that within some few months I was going to see new development on the land, but nothing has happened after three years since it was reclaimed,” he stated.

Despite being fenced off, the land is now covered with piles of solid waste, and the once-vibrant settlement has transformed into an environmentally hazardous area, marked by smoke and pollution. The seemingly protective wall does little to prevent encroachment, as spaces meant for gates provide easy access for trespassers, according to a report by Graphic Online.

The land, which also houses the Old Fadama Clinic, is exposed to various pollutants, posing health risks to both health workers and patients.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister is said to have noted that the responsibility to protect the land lies with the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly, the local authority with territorial jurisdiction.

While the GARCC secured the area and relocated the onion sellers and scrap dealers, the current state of the reclaimed land raises concerns about environmental management and public health.

“It’s not the Regional Minister’s responsibility to prevent people from dumping refuse or defecating on the land.

“I took the risk of relocating the traders, something which couldn’t be done in over 30 years, so I’ve done my part and the rest is for the assembly to protect the place,” Mr Quartey stated.

Agbogbloshie, characterized by environmentalists as the second most hazardous place on earth due to heavy and acidic smoke from open burning of waste, saw the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) relocate traders in 2021 under the “Let’s Make Accra Work” initiative.

The GARCC, led by Regional Minister Henry Quartey, had plans for a redevelopment scheme, intended to submit it to the Cabinet for approval and give the area a facelift.

A portion of the land was also allocated for a modern health facility as part of the government’s Agenda 111 initiative. However, after two-and-a-half years since reclamation, none of these projects has materialized, leaving the land undeveloped.

    ECG begins nationwide meter audit

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has commenced a nationwide meter audit starting from February 1, which will extend throughout the year.

This audit will entail a thorough examination of both the front and back of all post-paid and prepaid meters to ensure their integrity within the operational areas of the ECG.

Highlighting its authority under the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s LI 2413 (2020), the ECG emphasized that it possesses the mandate to access all its installations anywhere and at any time.

“Therefore, any attempt to physically prevent or deliberately frustrate ECG teams to assess your assigned meter will lead to the disconnection of the service to your house,” the ECG noted in its circular.

To guarantee the credibility of ECG teams visiting customer premises during the nationwide meter audit, the company has urged customers to inspect the identification cards of the ECG personnel.

Customers are encouraged to remain vigilant to avoid encounters with impostors and to ensure that they are dealing with authorized ECG representatives during the audit process.

  • Exploit huge deposits of gold in Dollar Power – Lands Minister urges investors

Exploit huge deposits of gold in Dollar Power – Lands Minister urges investors

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, has encouraged the investor community to collaborate with the government in establishing a large-scale mining operation in Dollar Power, located in the Bole District of the Savannah Region.

The minister highlighted that geological data indicates Dollar Power is richly mineralized, particularly with substantial gold deposits, making it a viable location for the establishment of large-scale mining operations.

Dollar Power, previously known as Sindi Community, is situated along the Ghana–Ivory Coast International Boundary Line in the Savannah Region, approximately 20 km from the District Capital, Bole. Historically, the area was uninhabited after being raided by slave traders in 1897, leaving it deserted.

However, in 1928, the colonial Governments of the then Gold Coast and Ivory Coast, established an International Boundary Line between the two countries, with the erection of Boundary Pillars at mutually agreed positions. This Boundary Line was reaffirmed by the two countries in 1973 with the planting of teak trees along the border.

The large deposits of gold in the area, however, attracted people from across both countries, whose activities has led to the destruction of Boundary Pillars and the teak trees. In 2005, a small group of Ghanaians begun moving to the area to take advantage of the gold deposits, and prevent Ivorians from exploiting the mineral resources.

Currently, there are about three thousand (3,000) inhabitants in the area, mainly involved in small-scale mining. The gold deposits in the area have made the people to name parts of the community Dollar Power Obuasi.

Since 2021, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, through the Ghana Boundary Commission, has been working with their counterparts in Ivory Coast to reaffirm the Boundary Lines. The Ministry has, also, been working with the Chiefs and people of the area to regularise their small scale mining activities.

On Wednesday, 31st January, 2024, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources led a team from the Ministries of Lands and Natural Resources and Roads and Highways to inspect progress of work on the road and other infrastructure in Dollar Power.

At a durbar with the Chiefs and people of the community, Hon. Jinapor said geological data from the Ghana Geological Survey Authority indicates huge deposits of gold in the area that makes it commercially viable for large scale mining.

He said the traditional notion that gold was found only in the south no longer holds, as large scale mining operations are currently taking place in the Upper East and Upper West Regions. According to the Minister, Dollar Power is even more mineralised than some of these areas, and with the right investment, large scale mining operations can be established to exploit the huge deposits of gold.

The Minister said to attract the needed investment into the community, which is currently only assessable by water, Government is constructing a 24km feeder road from Ntereso in the Bole District to Dollar Power, and another 25km feeder road from Sapelliga in the Upper East Region to Dollar Power.

He said these constructions being undertaken by the 48 Engineers of the Ghana Armed Forces are far advanced, and would be completed by the middle of this year.

In addition to the construction of the roads, he said Government is, also, committed to bringing a community mining to the area, to regularise activities of small scale miners. The Minister directed the Minerals Commission and the Ghana Geological Survey Authority to expedite action on the establishment of a community mining scheme.

The Minister called on the people to support Government to regularise their mining operations, and serve as watchdogs to fish out people in the community engaged in illegal mining, particularly, on river bodies.

The Chief of Dollar Power, Sindiwura Mahama Awudu Abott, speaking through his Secretary, thanked Government for the road construction which will link the community to other parts of the country.

He said the construction has, also, enhanced economic and social activities in the area, and will ensure effective border control when completed. The Chief, also, thanked Government for the commitment to establish a community mining scheme in the area, as well as bring large scale mining operations to the community.

He said most of the community members are miners, and are willing to work with Government to regularise their activities or work in an established large scale mine.

He pleaded with Government to construct a bridge over the Black Volta to aid transportation and trade, as well as enhance safety of community members.

He, also, called on Government to restore the destroyed Boundary Pillars and teak trees to secure the safety of the border and prevent encroachment.

  • Banks receive GHC2.5bn from BoG via GFSF for financial support

Banks receive GHC2.5bn from BoG via GFSF for financial support

The government has released GH¢2.5 billion to certain banks through the Ghana Financial Stability Fund (GFSF), as revealed by Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

This disclosure came during the 116th regular meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), where discussions included global and macroeconomic developments, as well as an assessment of the economy and risks related to inflation.

The funds are intended to assist banks in overcoming financial challenges associated with the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DDEP).

The Ministry of Finance initiated the disbursement under this program in the previous year, established by the government to alleviate the financial impacts of the DDEP.

This initiative is part of Ghana’s three-year $3 billion Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), signed in 2022 to provide balance of payment support, restore macroeconomic stability, spur growth, and address the country’s increasing public debt.

While the specific banks benefiting from the GFSF were not mentioned by Dr. Addison, he highlighted that, despite challenges, the banking industry remained robust and profitable. The sector’s performance improved, with ongoing recapitalization efforts by shareholders and support from the GFSF contributing to its stability, as indicated by the latest stress tests.

“As at the end of 2023, the data shows that the banking sector remains stable, liquid, and profitable. Profitability improved for the sector from the loss position recorded in the 2022 audited accounts, reflecting sustained increases in net interest income and fees and commissions,” the Chairman of the MPC stated.

He said the industry’s balance sheet was generally strong, underscored by increased assets in December 2023, funded largely by deposits.

“Key financial soundness indicators remained broadly positive with the Capital Adequacy Ratio (adjusted for reliefs) above the regulatory minimum, while liquidity and profitability ratios were higher in December 2023 compared to the same period last year,” Dr Addison stated.

Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, reported that the Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio increased in 2023 due to general repayment challenges faced by borrowers. This development reflected the impact of macroeconomic challenges encountered in 2022.

Regarding the recapitalization of banks, Dr. Addison stated that some banks were ahead of the 2026 recapitalization deadline, and some had already sought additional funds from their shareholders to bolster their capital.

He emphasized that the Bank of Ghana did not have concerns about the capital levels of the banks. According to him, the profits declared by the banks in the previous year were sufficient to meet their capital requirements.

“The Bank is closely monitoring the capital restoration efforts of the banks in line with approved plans, including through support from the Ghana Financial Stability Fund. It is expected that early recapitalisation and effective risk management by banks will help promote overall banking sector stability and resilience and ensure effective financial intermediation to strengthen the economic recovery efforts,” Dr Addison said.

Allow Independent candidates join IPAC – Buaben Asamoa

Member of Movement for Change, Buaben Asamoa, is urging the Electoral Commission (EC) to permit the inclusion of independent presidential candidates in Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings.

The former Adentan MP asserts that independent candidates play a crucial role as stakeholders in the nation’s electoral processes.

In an interview with Citi FM, Mr. Asamoa articulated that incorporating independent candidates into IPAC meetings would introduce diverse ideas that could contribute to the overall benefit of the country. This move, he believes, would foster inclusivity and enrich the electoral discourse with a broader range of perspectives.

“I would have loved that the independents are allowed to also voice their opinion within the formal circle of IPAC. That will make a difference. Hopefully, even if that does not work, we will put in our bit formally to discuss that,” he said.

“I think Ghanaians should look up and forward beyond the culture of the two dominant parties. You have the opportunity to break the winner-takes-all,” he added.

The call for the inclusion of independent presidential candidates in Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings comes in the wake of a proposal by the Electoral Commission (EC) to change the election date from December 7 to November 7. As part of this proposal, the EC suggested declaring the new date as a holiday, discussed during engagements with political parties at IPAC meetings.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reiterated its objection to the proposed change in the election date. This stance was reaffirmed during the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Monday, January 29.

The NDC urged the public to disregard any conflicting reports and disclosed its support for altering the date for the 2028 general elections instead.

NAPO is the only one Chiefs and residents in Ashanti Region want to be Bawumia’s vice – Old Tafo MP

Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has disclosed that the Chiefs and residents of the Ashanti region are advocating for Energy Minister Mathew Opoku Prempeh to be selected as the running mate to NPP Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Mr Assafuah emphasized that the people of the Ashanti region consider the Bawumia-Opoku Prempeh ticket as essential for the NPP to break the eight-year cycle and secure victory in the elections.

Speaking on CitiTV’s Eyewitness News on Wednesday, January 31, he said, “The people of the Ashanti region said they want to see Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the President of the Republic of Ghana and they also said that the ticket that is going to give us that victory is a ticket that includes Mathew Opoku Prempeh.”

He additionally mentioned that the Chiefs and residents of the Ashanti region are collectively endorsing the Bawumia-NAPO ticket, considering it as the pivotal factor for success in the 2024 elections.

Although Dr. Bawumia has not officially declared his running mate for the December polls, several analysts speculate that Opoku Prempeh and Joseph Osei Owusu are potential candidates for the position.

Additionally, Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare and Communications Minister Ursula Owusu Ekulful have also been mentioned as possible running mates by some observers

Highly influential figures are out to get Movement for Change – Buaben Asamoah

A member of the Movement for Change, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, has alleged that the party is currently under attack by some prominent individuals in the political landscape.

In an interview on UTV, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) member noted that electorates who are interested in casting their ballot for former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, are being persuaded not to do so on the rationale that the party will be robbed in the 2024 election as it has no polling station.

Mr Buaben Asamoa noted that such actions should not be acceptable as they set a bad precedent for Ghana’s electoral process. He did not disclose the identities of the said individuals badmouthing the Movement for Change.

“Some big men in Ghana are saying that this movement is an underdog so we will rob them during the elections. So anyone who wants to vote for Alan Kyerematen shouldn’t becuase it would be a waste of vote. Why should this be so. They are saying because he doesn’t have a polling station, he will be robbed. And a big person will tell me this. How?” he revealed.

On the other hand, Buaben Asamoa is urging the Electoral Commission (EC) to permit the inclusion of independent presidential candidates in Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings. The former Adentan MP asserts that independent candidates play a crucial role as stakeholders in the nation’s electoral processes.

  • 2024 election timetable should have been out by now – CODEO to EC

2024 election timetable should have been out by now – CODEO to EC

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called on the Electoral Commission to promptly release the timetable for the December 2024 general elections.

Both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have echoed similar concerns, emphasizing the importance of having a roadmap for the elections at this stage to facilitate effective planning by all stakeholders.

National Coordinator of CODEO, Albert Arhin, emphasized that the timely release of the election timetable would allow the Electoral Commission to demonstrate its readiness for the December polls.

He suggested that this action would not only provide assurance to political parties but also indicate that the Electoral Commission is well-prepared, even if the election date were to be in November, as the EC has proposed.

“The only thing that I consider and which the EC should look at seriously is to be able to come out. The timetable for the 2024 election has not come out, and I believe that is the reason why a lot of the smaller parties and the bigger opposition party are dragging their feet.

“By now, that calendar should have been out to convince everybody that they really mean business and that whatever fear is from the opposition is nonexistent,” he said while speaking on TopStory on JoyFM on January 31.

Albert Arhin’s remarks come in response to apprehensions raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other political parties regarding the feasibility of the Electoral Commission’s proposed November 7 date, should it be approved by Parliament.

Mr Arhin emphasized that the key to garnering support and consensus on the proposed change of date lies in the Electoral Commission’s provision of clarity regarding its electoral plans.

“I will appeal to them that they should come out now and immediately with the timetable and convince everybody that they will be able to deliver.

“The NDC is saying that why did they not do it around 2017, 2018, 2019 thereabouts when they had time and there was no rush and nothing being done at that time,” he added.

Meanwhile, he stated that during the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, all parties agreed that the EC should begin the process.

“Some parties in the room [IPAC meeting] were saying that whether it is going to be used for 2024 or not, that thing should be started. The ball should start rolling so that whether we are able to finish or not able to finish, at least by 2028, they should be able to use it,” he added.

  • TEWU embarks on nationwide strike

    TEWU embarks on nationwide strike

Members of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) are set to commence a nationwide industrial action from February 1.

This decision follows the government’s failure to meet their demands for improved conditions of service, as stipulated in the ultimatum issued at the end of January.

Chairman Sulemana Abdul Rahman clarified that their demands include the non-provision of lump sum amounts for pension to some retired members and the non-receipt of various allowances owed to those currently in active service.

In an interview with JoyNews on January 30, Rahman stated that approximately 10,000 members across various public universities would abstain from rendering their services starting Thursday as part of the industrial action.

“I can assure you that we are over 10,000 members in the public universities across the country. So from tomorrow, the whole country will know whether we are on strike or we are not on strike, because we are still at the workplace that is why people were not seeing the seriousness.

“You know GAWU and SSA-SoG have already declared and they are on strike but because we were at the workplaces the impact was not there. The government has not felt the heat.

“From tomorrow government will feel the heat and do the needful. Even though we do not wish to embark on a strike, as I said, when you are being pushed to the wall, the only option that you have is to respect the voice of the members by putting down your tools, which we have done.”

He clarified that the strike would unfold in stages, meaning that certain crucial sectors such as security personnel, drivers, and certain secretarial staff would not participate initially. However, he added that, over time, the industrial action would encompass all members of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH).

“We are of the view that the strike is in stages for now, we are asking the security to remain at the post.  But when we get to a stage where we need to withdraw everybody, I can assure you that the university will be on lockdown. If the security men are not there to work, you can imagine what will happen,” he added.

Meanwhile, he said, if the government called them to the negotiation table and addressed their concerns, they would call off the strike.

  • Motorists pay between GHC75 and GHC300 for Emissions Levy effective today

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has officially launched the implementation of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112) starting February 1, 2024.

Under this act, a levy will be imposed on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions specifically targeting internal combustion engine vehicles. The GRA underscores that this initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to addressing greenhouse gas emissions.

The primary goal of introducing the emissions levy is to encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly technology and green energy. This is expected to contribute significantly to improved environmental management, as well as the control of air and water pollution.

Individuals obligated to fulfill the Emissions Levy requirement are instructed to complete the registration process and make levy payments exclusively through the ghana.gov platform, as specified by the authority.

“Under section 4(4) of Act 1112, a person required to issue a road certificate (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and other testing centres) shall demand evidence of payment of the levy before issuing a Road Use Certificate.”

Additionally, the GRA called on all vehicle owners to adhere to the directive and fulfill their obligation by paying the Emissions Levy as stipulated in Act 1112.

Watch Wontumi’s funny reaction as Kokosohene narrates what happened between them

On Monday, January 29, Kokosohene, Nana Kwaku Duah, had the opportunity to tell his side of the story in relation to the controversy between himself and Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi is said to have engaged in a banter with the Kokosohene, who is also the Chairman of the Council of Elders at Manhiya, during the vetting of some party individuals.

Later, it was reported that Chairman Wontumi had cursed the Kokosohene.

At Manhyia Palace on Monday, the Kokosohene recounted the genesis of the controversy. But in his narration, Chairman Wontumi could not control his facial expressions, which communicated astonishment and disagreement with the oration of events.

According to Nana Kwaku Duah, he spotted an argument between Chairman Wontumi and a party Executive from Manhyia. In his attempt to calm the raging Wontumi, the Bernard Antwi Boasiako boasted of having his own kingdom.

“This whole issue is. We attended an NPP vetting, I am the Council of Elders Chairman, Manhyia so I had to be there. I am the vetting committee chair at Manhyia.

“When we arrived, an MP just left after being vetted. So a while later, we saw our Organizer arrive. He came to sit with the Chairman to tell him something.

“We couldn’t here what they were discussing but all of a sudden, they started arguing. So we tried to bring peace and so I told the Organizer, that even the Regional Chairman is sitting here so how do you go and argue with him. So I sacked him.

“So I was trying to calm the tension and so I was engaging our constituency Chairman who was sitting close to me. I told him, Chairman, your brother is telling you to stop and you are not paying attention to him.

“See, nobody can force me to do anything. Even if the Otumfuo says something I don’t agree with, I will let him know.”

A look at Chairman Wontumi at this point suggests bewilderment as he ponders over how such a scenario will pun out as the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is known to be the man with the highest authority in the Ashanti Kingdom.

The Kokosohene continued: “So he said it for the first time and left. Then he returned and said I have created my kingdom here. So when he said that, I told him, I will not sit here for you to say anything you want. Although I am here for the vetting, I am a representative of the Otumfuo, and will not allow you to say that.

“So we argued for about 15 to 20 minutes. The women’s organizer, Nana Ama, got up and said it is NPP kingdom. I replied, saying NPP has no kingdom, and it ended there.”

Later, reports had it that Chairman Wontumi had cursed the Kokosohene. Responding to this claim, Nana Kwaku Duah confirmed that Wontumi swore an oath against his life.

He noted that this took place during a phone call among Justin Frimpong Kodua, NPP’s General Secretary, Chairman Wontumi and himself.

“Later, the Samaheme asked me and I briefed him. I was there and all of a sudden the General Secretary called me inquiring about what had happened because they are demanding that I bring Chairman Wontumi.

“So I told him that I engaged Samaheme and briefed him. Then he told me that then this is no issue and he proceeded to let me know that Chairman was on the line so I should speak to him.

“When he joined, he didn’t even allow General Secretary talk. I then told Secretary to allow him. When he opened his mouth, he said if it emerges that he didn’t say what I’m alleging he said, Antoa should kill me and use my family members for Thanksgiving,” he said.

After all was said and done, the Kumasi Traditional Council pardoned Chairman Wontumi of any allegations levelled against him. This follows Wontumi insistence of being innocent.

Even with a powerful chief, you still have not completed your airport – Afia Schwarzenegger ‘mocks’ Ashantis

Ghanaian socialite, Afia Schwarzenegger, has expressed frustration about the lack of development in the Ashanti Region.

She criticized the residents for not being concerned about the region’s slow progress and highlighted issues such as deplorable roads and the incomplete construction of the airport.

Afia Schwarzenegger mentioned feeling embarrassed to be an Ashanti due to the current state of the region.

She called on the people and chiefs of the Ashanti region to demand development from the government, especially considering the uncompleted Kumasi Airport Project after eight years under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

“I wouldn’t have stepped foot in the Ashanti region if not for the fact that my mother lives there because I’m embarrassed. My mother told me I’m an Ashanti but I refuse to be. What is in Kumasi? The place is full of dust and no one has been able to speak to the government to fix your deplorable roads.

“It’s been eight years since they started building an airport in Kumasi, what is its state now? Aren’t you ashamed that aeroplanes cannot land at the airport to date? Yet you claim to have the most powerful chief in the world. The only source of entertainment in the Ashanti region is a swimming pool and they are not ashamed,” she said while speaking in a TikTok live session.

Contrary to Afia Schwarzenegger’s criticism, reports suggest that work on the Kumasi Airport Project has progressed to phases 1 and 2 and is advancing steadily.

Wontumi said Antoa should kill me and use my family as thanksgiving – Kokosohene reveals

Kokosohene, Nana Kwaku Duah, has revealed the harrowing words said to him by Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, during their unpleasant encounter over the latter’s use of ‘kingdom’ during the party’s vetting process.

At Manhyia Palace on Monday, he recounted the genesis of the controversy. According to Nana Kwaku Duah, he spotted an argument between Chairman Wontumi and a party Executive from Manhyia.

In his attempt to calm the raging Wontumi, Bernard Antwi Boasiako boasted of having his own kingdom. They argued for about 15 minutes but their argument was dissolved. However, that did not end the controversy that had sparked.

Later, reports had it that Chairman Wontumi had cursed the Kokosohene. The Chief first confirmed this claim in an interview on Abusua FM.

“He cursed me with about seven river deities, including ‘Antoa’ to strike me dead and use my wife and children as thanksgiving”, Nana Kwaku Duah claimed, adding “even Justin Kodua was speechless about Wontumi’s actions”.

Responding to this claim once again, Nana Kwaku Duah reiterated that Wontumi swore an oath against his life as well as that of his family members.

GRA chases receiver of collapsed banks over GHC91M unpaid taxes

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is actively pursuing a receiver of defunct banks for an amount of GHČź91 million in evaded taxes.

The licenses of over 300 financial institutions were revoked by the central bank in 2017 due to various financial breaches.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee, Mr. Edward Apenteng Gyamerah, Commissioner in Charge of Domestic Tax and Revenue Division at the GRA, disclosed that the GRA has been unable to collect the GHČź91 million owed by the defunct banks.

The receiver has been notified multiple times to remit the funds to the GRA, as it holds the first right to receive any such payments if the receiver recovers money from the companies.

“And we are yet to receive from the receiver,” he said.

A member of the committee, Kofi Adams, emphasized the significance of transparency and accountability by requesting copies of the letters, specifically the first and the latest ones, sent to the receiver demanding payments.

He expressed concern that with significant tax revenues due to the government remaining uncollected, there is no justification for imposing additional taxes on the citizens.

Akufo-Addo does not plan to sign anti-LGBTQ bill into law – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama is of the assertion that President Akufo-Addo will not approve the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill also known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

Mr Mahama criticized the government for not promptly facilitating the approval and enactment of the bill three years after it was introduced.

He disagreed with the President’s argument that passing the bill would result in additional costs for the government and impose pressure on the state’s Consolidated Fund.

“The bill in parliament has not been passed yet, but the government has shown that if the law is passed, the president will not assent to it. The Attorney General says the private member’s motion can be passed, but it should not come at a cost to the government. The president, based on that technicality, will not sign the bill into law. Between Parliament and the Executive, they will have to check and see if they can take off any cost from the government so that the President will sign,” he said.

Flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has made his position known on the identification and activities of the LGBTQ community in the country.

According to the former president, Ghana cannot accept or condone the activities of the LGBTQ community. He argues that such a practice or lifestyle goes against the Christian faith.

He rubbished the claim that a man can decide to alter his sex and be addressed as a trans man or woman.

“My faith is against LGBTQ. I am an Assembly’s of God Member. The faith I have does not agree with a man marrying a man and a women getting betrothed to another woman.

“Personally, I don’t agree with that. A man is a man and a woman is a woman. I do not agree with the assertion that people say I feel like I am a girl when I am a boy, so I am going to have surgery.

“God created us as man and woman and he knew what he was doing. So if you ask me, my personal faith is against LGBTQ,” he said.

The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill also known as the LGBTQ Bill has been debated on for close to three years after being sent to Parliament by some eight MPs including Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam Nartey George in 2021.

Speaker Alban Bagbin reassured the public that the bill would be passed before Parliament adjourns for the Christmas and New Year break but that has not been the case.

The Chairman of the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament, Kwame Anyimadu Antwi, has proposed the deletion of Clause 4 of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.

Clause 4 of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill creates an offense related to undermining proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values.

He argues that the clause is ambiguous and highly subjective in nature, a decision made following engagements with the Attorney-General, hence the need to delete it.

Quoting recommendations from the Attorney General, Godfred Dame, Mr. Anyimadu Antwi said, “Though this clause creates an offence relating to undermining proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values what constitutes ‘undermine’ is not defined and therefore the basis of the offence cannot be determined.

“Mr. Speaker this is the advice the learned Attorney General gave to the committee and the entire committee agreed on this advice. And that’s why we agreed as has been said by ranking that it was too much of subjectivity and ambiguities and that is why we propose that in deleting and creating an offence we shouldn’t be having ambiguities and subjectivities. That is why the proposal is to delete the entire clause.”

Meanwhile, the sponsors of the bill are not enthused about the recommendation made. South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Defeamekpor said that clause was integral to the entire bill and thus deleting it would be erroneous.

“Mr. Speaker the essence of four is so cardinal to this legislation. So, so cardinal, so, so fundamental to it. I’ve been struggling to appreciate the point made by the ranking member that this offence in article 39, he’s not been able to point it out.

“The subjectivity element that he points to that, too I am struggling to appreciate.

“Because you see when we enacted the provision this way, subject to the enhancement contained in the amendments listed thereafter, there will be investigations if somebody makes a complaint that clause four which subsequently will become section four has been breached, that is not the end of it. Investigations will be conducted. It is the investigation that will establish a prima facie that indeed clause four subsequently section four of the law has been breached or not,” he explained.

Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill has received divided opinions, with some Ghanaians calling for its approval while others, such as Amnesty International discouraging its passing.

Kokosohene, Nana Kwaku Duah, has disclosed how intense his quarrel with Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, over the use of ‘kingdom’ during the party’s vetting process was.

In his attempt to calm the raging Wontumi, Bernard Antwi Boasiako boasted of having his own kingdom.

The use of the word got the Kokosohene into a hysteria. He later communicated to Wontumi that it is unacceptable to make such a comment when the only recognised kingdom is the Ashanti Kingdom.

According to Nana Kwaku Duah, his banter with Wontumi sparred for about 15 minutes until an intervention by a woman organiser’s present.

“This whole issue is. We attended an NPP vetting, I am the Council of Elders Chairman, Manhyia so I had to be there. I am the vetting committee chair at Manhyia.

Everybody is just tired of the corruption happening in your govt – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo

Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed the view that Ghanaians have become desensitized to corruption.

He noted that in the past, when people heard of scandals, they were shocked, but currently, citizens seem to expect public officers to engage in corruption in one way or another.

“Today when there is a scandal people are like we are tired because they are all tired, everybody is tired. And so even in the twilight to exit office you still coming up with schemes to steal money.

“This is at a time when we have the office of the special prosecutor suddenly say the special prosecutor should return all Cecilia Dapaah’s money to her. The explanation they give is that the Special Prosecutor cannot handle money laundering cases. So why did they establish the office of the special prosecutor?” he quizzed.

He made the comment in response to the latest Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International, ranking Ghana 70th out of 180 countries in terms of corruption.

Ghana scored 43 out of 100, the same since 2020. In Sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana scored better than 39 countries, including Burkina Faso (41), South Africa (41), CĂ´te d’Ivoire (40), Tanzania (40), and Lesotho (39).

However, it ranked lower than seven countries in the region, including Mauritius (51), Namibia (49), and Sao Tome and Principe (45). The average score for African countries remains low, at 33 out of 100, with 90% of Sub-Saharan African nations scoring below 50.

Vote-buying will soon make going to Parliament like buffet – ACEPA Director

Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr Rasheed Draman, has expressed deep concern about the rising prevalence of vote-buying by politicians during elections, emphasizing its detrimental impact on democracy.

Dr Draman highlights vote-buying as a worrisome trend where electoral contestants use monetary or other incentives to influence voters in their favor.

He lamented the trend of individuals with substantial financial resources winning over voters, sidelining experienced and competent candidates.

Dr Draman believes this development poses a significant threat to the democratic process, as it may compromise the selection of candidates based on merit and qualifications.

In an interview on the January 29 edition of Ghana Tonight on TV3 Dr Draman stated, “I can tell you on authority that some of the people who have decided not to contest, some of them lament that those who have come with big moneys to replace them are people who perhaps are ill-prepared, with very little education to go into parliament. You get them in there, and certainly, quality is going to be affected.”

Dr Rasheed Draman highlighted the potential repercussions of the increasing trend of vote-buying, including the challenges faced by new Members of Parliament (MPs) in adapting to their roles.

This difficulty could result in challenges maintaining a quorum during parliamentary sessions. Dr. Draman emphasized the lack of regular induction and preparation for new entrants into Parliament as a complicating factor.

He further warned of the possible infiltration of illegitimate funds into the democratic system. The ACEPA director urged authorities to investigate the funding sources behind financially endowed individuals entering politics and emphasized the potential national security implications of such scenarios.

“If nothing is done, I think in the next two cycles of our election, we are going to have a big crisis on our hands. Because, those who have money are going to line up to go into parliament. It is going to be like a buffet and experienced MPs who don’t have fat wallets are going to continue to get pushed out. That’s not going to be good for our democracy and even the national security implication of that.

“All these people who have money and are pushing experienced MPS out, where are they getting the money from? Who is funding them? What is the interest of all these people who are providing them with funding? We need to interrogate all these and the implications of that on the quality of our democracy.”

“The bill in Parliament has not yet been passed into law but the government has made it known that the president will not append his signature because his Attorney General says anything that is a Private Member motion and cannot bring any cost to the government.

“Based on that, Akufo-Addo has said when the Bill comes to him, he will not sign it.”

The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill also known as the LGBTQ Bill has been debated on for close to three years after being sent to Parliament by some eight MPs including Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam Nartey George in 2021.

Speaker Bagbin reassured the public that the bill would be passed before Parliament adjourns for the Christmas and New Year break but that has not been the case.

Be circumspect in your remarks – Obiri Boahen urges Wontumi

Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has advised the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi), to exercise discretion in his public utterances.

This advice comes after Chairman Wontumi was cleared by Manhyia over an alleged disrespectful comment targeting the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Obiri Boahen stated that this incident should serve as a caution for Chairman Wontumi and all NPP executives to carefully measure their utterances in the public space. He commended the Bantemahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI, for his handling of the issue.

“You see, I will give advice on both sides. The Bantemahene did very well; he handled the issue well…I will advise Chairman Wontumi to exercise discretion in his language because we have to consider where we are, the environment, the people, and what we are about to say.

“So, the advice I will give to Chairman Wontumi and all NPP executives, including myself, is that we should be careful with our words,” he said.

He added “And the chiefs also, they have to be careful a bit because if the Kokosohene did not go and report this, I am not sure all these things would have come up,” added Obiri Boahen.

The Asanteman Traditional Council dismissed the charges against Chairman Wontumi after hearing both sides. The accuser, Kokosuhene, Nana Kwaku Duah, was advised to refrain from bringing political issues to the Manhyia Palace.

Any agreement with SML will not be respected in the next NDC administration – Mahama

National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has made a pledge to cancel the controversial contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML).

He characterized such agreements as corrupt and stated that they would not be allowed to persist under his administration, as they go against the nation’s best interests.

Mr. Mahama emphasized his commitment to strengthening anti-corruption measures and expressed his readiness to terminate the SML contract if elected.

“One would have thought that the corruption cases were enough but it has numb Ghanaians. Corruption does not shock Ghanaians the way it used to shock us”, he said.

“An NDC government under me will not recognise or accept this SML agreement. The President has hurriedly got KPMG to audit it, whatever audit they will do I say we won’t accept or respect any agreement with SML.”

During a meeting with organized labor as part of the “Building Ghana Tour” of the Eastern Region, John Mahama expressed his commitment to addressing corruption in the country. He pledged to cancel the controversial contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML), considering such agreements as corrupt and against the nation’s best interests.

In a December 2023 investigative report, The Fourth Estate implicated Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the Ministry of Finance in a contentious contract.

The report alleged that GRA had granted SML a purported 10-year contract with an annual payment of $100 million, raising concerns about possible irregularities. SML refuted this claim, asserting that it had a five-year contract instead.

The GRA, in a statement on December 20, 2023, maintained that proper procurement procedures were followed. On January 3, 2024, SML welcomed President Akufo-Addo’s directive to suspend its ongoing revenue assurance operations and undergo an audit of its contract with the GRA and the Ministry of Finance.

President Akufo-Addo has appointed KPMG, an audit, tax, and advisory services firm, to conduct an immediate audit. SML expressed confidence that the audit would provide a clear and accurate depiction of its operations.

About a week ago, the president approved an extension to audit firm KPMG, allowing more time to complete its assessment of the controversial contract.

EC to pay staff who monitored voter exhibition exercise by Feb. 2

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that field staff who supervised the voter exhibition exercise last year will receive their payment by Friday.

Deputy Chairman of the Commission in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, stated that the delay in payment was due to inaccurate information provided by the staff.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, he said, “The problem the commission has been having is that a number of the people we engage bring wrong bank accounts… And the challenge we also have with the banks is that once you send the payment, if about 2% of them have wrong details, the bank doesn’t honour the cheques.”

“For those who did the exhibition, about 95% of the payment has been sent to the bank, so we do expect that by Thursday, Friday people should get their money,” he added.

The five-day voter exhibition exercise conducted by the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) in preparation for the district-level and unit committee elections ended on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

The exhibition process was initiated on Friday, November 3, spanning all 38,622 polling stations nationwide. It was opened from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm daily.

You disappoint me – Gabby Otchere-Darko tells NPP

Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has expressed disappointment in the ruling party over its inability to effectively communicate its achievements in recent years and the perceived failure of Ghanaians to recognize the government’s commendable efforts.

Mr Otchere-Darko, in an interview on Asaase Radio on Wednesday, January 31, acknowledged the substantial progress made by the Akufo-Addo-led government in navigating the challenging economic landscape between 2021 and 2022.

He however noted that these achievements he talks off have not been well communicated by the NPP, hence his decision to step back from local politics.

“I have retired from domestic politics. I get somehow frustrated by the narratives, and the big disappointment I have is with the governing New Patriotic Party itself, it is the lack of recognition of the work that they have done. For me, it’s a major disappointment…there is one thing we must admit, 2022 was extremely difficult, 2021 to 2022 was extremely difficult,” he said.

Despite facing severe economic challenges from 2021 till now, he highlighted that various policies implemented by the administration successfully prevented Ghanaians from enduring queues for essential products and services.

“You know when there are crises, there are people who benefit from crisis but I don’t know who benefitted from the crisis of 2022. The Banks suffered, retailers suffered, manufacturers suffered, I mean it was everywhere,” he added.

A stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has disclosed that he has retired from domestic politics.

In an interview with Asaase Radio, the legal practitioner and cousin to President Akufo-Addo noted that this is due to the NPP’s inability to effectively communicate its achievements in recent years and the perceived failure of Ghanaians to recognize the government’s commendable efforts.

Money laundering: We will speak about OSP’s docket on Cecilia Dapaah at the appropriate time – EOCO Boss

The Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO), Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, has confirmed receiving the docket related to Cecilia Dapaah, the former Sanitation Minister, concerning an alleged money laundering case.

However, she noted that although the Office of the Special Prosecutor has officially submitted the docket to her office, she has not yet had the opportunity to review its contents.

She therefore hesitated from making any further comments on the matter when engaged by the media at a Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) event in Accra on January 29.

“I have that, and we are now reviewing, at the appropriate time, we will speak about it. I am not well briefed about the docket, so I don’t want to make any comment on it until we review it. The most important thing is that he has handed over, I don’t have any more thing to add,” she explained.

The Special Prosecutor (SP), Kissi Agyebeng, has officially referred the case involving the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) for further investigations into suspected money laundering.

This decision was prompted by revelations that a substantial amount of cash found at Dapaah’s residence, along with funds in her bank accounts, may have been repatriated from abroad.

The investigation took a cross-border turn when individuals of interest claimed that part of the seized cash was transported to the United States. As a result, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) collaborated with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to delve into the matter.

Finance Ministry to engage Organised Labour over 15% VAT on electricity in the coming weeks

The Ministry of Finance has recognized the concerns expressed by Organised Labour regarding the proposed implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) on residential customers’ electricity consumption.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, January 30, the Ministry revealed its intention to hold comprehensive meetings with Organised Labour and other crucial stakeholders in the upcoming weeks to incorporate their input into the decision-making process.

The statement urged Organised Labour, ECG, NEDCO, and all stakeholders to exercise restraint, create a conducive environment for constructive dialogue, and work towards a prompt resolution of the current impasse.

The Ministry’s response comes in the wake of Organised Labour’s threat of industrial action over the proposed implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) on domestic electricity consumption.

On Wednesday, January 24, Organised Labour expressed dissatisfaction with the imposition of VAT on a specific category of electricity consumers and called for the Finance Ministry to retract the directive. This stance was reinforced by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), which issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government, demanding the withdrawal of VAT on electricity consumption beyond the lifeline threshold.

The Ministry’s statement also highlighted the country’s positive achievements under the Post Covid-19 Programme for Economic Growth (PC-PEG). These accomplishments include surpassing growth targets, reducing inflation, improving fiscal and external positions, achieving a more stable exchange rate, and lowering the Monetary Policy Rate.

Moreover, the Finance Ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to maintain progress, foster macroeconomic stability, and promote inclusive growth.

Don’t just make wild allegations, provide evidence – EOCO on fight against corruption

Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO), Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, has issued a challenge to individuals who allege corruption, urging them to provide evidence to support their claims.

According to her, making unverified and baseless allegations of corruption is insufficient, and those making such accusations should be able to substantiate them with concrete evidence.

Speaking to the media at a Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) event Accra on January 29, she said, “One thing that we should always remember is that when you are prosecuting corruption, it is not about what you think, it is about the evidence that you have. If you don’t have evidence, you don’t have a case. That is what the public must understand. People make wild allegations but when it comes to evidence, they chicken out.”

Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah emphasizes that corruption permeates through the fabric of society, underscoring the need for a collective effort in the fight against it.

“I am concerned, everybody should be concerned. What do we have to do? We must all put our hands together and we must fight whatever is fighting us. That is what I can say. The point is that, like the OSP said, if we really need to fight it, then everybody must fight. I have somebody who asked me for support to pay school fees or something.

Then the moment I said I could help, she called me back to say that I should not put it on her MoMo because she is owing MTN, can you imagine. And I did. So, these are small-small things that we think they don’t matter, but they do. It starts from small-small things and become big,” she stated.

Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah was responding to questions related to a money laundering case referred to her office by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). Additionally, she addressed queries regarding an exposĂŠ by The Fourth Estate on the contract awarded to Strategic Mobilisation by the Ghana Revenue Authority for revenue assurances in the downstream petroleum sector.

On January 3, 2024, SML welcomed President Akufo-Addo’s directive to suspend its ongoing revenue assurance operations and undergo an audit of its contract with the GRA and the Ministry of Finance.

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has dismissed reports on plans to exit the New Patriotic Party following her defeat at the party’s just-ended Parliamentary Primaries.

In a statement dated January 30, 2024, Adwoa Safo acknowledged awareness of media publications suggesting her potential departure from the NPP to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 general election.

However, she categorically denied these speculations, affirming her commitment to the NPP and its principles, while announcing her decision to work collaboratively with the NPP leadership to promote unity.

“My attention has been drawn to several recent misinformation and speculation in the media regarding my political future in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency in particular and the New Patriotic Party as a whole.

“I wish to clarify, that despite the setback and outcome of last Saturday’s parliamentary primaries in Dome-Kwabenya, I remain steadfast in my commitment to the shared values of the New Patriotic Party and our corporate quest to break the 8 with H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia come December 7, 2024.

“As a three-term Member of Parliament and a true party person, I am cognizant of the fundamental principles which underpin the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition for which internal competition and afterwards cooperation, remains the guiding light,” she stated.

Sarah Adwoa Safo added, “For the avoidance of doubt and without any shred of ambiguity, I reiterate that I have no intention whatsoever of running as an Independent Candidate in the upcoming December 7, 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections and for that matter, at any point in the forseeable future.”

The results declared by the Electoral Commission reveal that Mike Oquaye Jnr secured a significant victory with 1,194 votes in the parliamentary primaries. Sarah Adwoa Safo obtained 328 votes, securing the second position, while the third contender, Sheela Oppong, finished last with 186 votes.

You must trust us to fight corruption – Chief of Staff tells Ghanaians

Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, has called on citizens and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to have confidence in state institutions tasked with investigating and prosecuting corruption-related offenses.

She emphasized the need for unity in the fight against corruption and expressed concern that “unfounded allegations” could undermine efforts to combat corruption effectively.

Speaking at a meeting organized by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) in Accra to discuss the 2023 Corruption Perception Index (CPI) released by Transparency International, Madam Osei-Opare highlighted that since 2017, all corruption allegations against government officials had been promptly investigated by relevant State institutions, and the outcomes were made public.

She urged CSOs and the public not to persistently view individuals who have been cleared of corruption allegations by State institutions as guilty, emphasizing that there is no basis for such perceptions after the due investigative processes have taken place.

“Unfounded allegation of corruption and perception of wrongdoing hardly aid the fight against corruption. When corruption allegations have been investigated and findings made exonerated the subject of investigations, there is no basis for continuous suspicion of wrongdoing by civil society and other persons who have access to the media.

“We must trust institutions of State established to fight against corruption,” she said.

Madam Osei-Opare emphasized the need to strengthen the State’s capacity in dealing with corruption, acknowledging the ever-evolving nature of the problem.

“The struggle against corruption is ever evolving. Wrongdoers employ complex and sophisticated means to avoid detection,” she said.

She made this comment at a time when the Transparency International has released the latest Corruption Perceptions Index, ranking Ghana 70th out of 180 countries in terms of corruption.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff has disclosed that the Conduct of Public Officers Bill will soon be considered by the Cabinet after the completion of ongoing stakeholder engagements on the Bill.

She highlighted that once passed into law, the Bill would play a significant role in controlling corruption within public institutions and agencies, aiming to safeguard the public purse.

  • Michael Olise scores winner for Crystal Palace

Michael Olise scores winner for Crystal Palace

Michael Olise made a notable return to Crystal Palace’s starting lineup by scoring the decisive goal in their 3-2 comeback victory over Sheffield United in the Premier League, providing relief for Eagles boss Roy Hodgson.

On loan from Villarreal, Ben Brereton Diaz stunned the home crowd with a goal within 21 seconds at Selhurst Park, but Olise played a crucial role in setting up Eberechi Eze for the equalizer. James McAtee restored the Blades’ lead, only for Olise to once again assist Eze, completing his brace and leveling the score within the first half-hour.

In the second half, Olise secured the win for Palace, making sure they walked away with all three points. Despite a late effort from Anel Ahmedhodzic hitting the crossbar, Sheffield United, the Premier League’s bottom side, couldn’t salvage any points.

Roy Hodgson’s team, with just one win in their last 10 league contests, saw the return of Olise, who had recovered from his second hamstring injury of the season. The victory was crucial for Palace, with Hodgson downplaying it as a “must-win” but acknowledging the challenges posed by numerous absentees throughout the season.

The match saw Brereton Diaz opening the scoring for Sheffield United, Olise assisting Eze for the equalizer, McAtee restoring the Blades’ lead, and Eze scoring his second to level the score again—all within a frenetic first half. The second half saw Olise securing the win for Palace, although concerns arose when he and Eze were substituted, potentially as precautionary measures.

Despite Sheffield United’s attempt to salvage a point with Ahmedhodzic hitting the crossbar and Henderson denying Brooks, the match ended with Crystal Palace securing the victory.

  • Bawumia is a ‘conman’, he sweet talked us in 2016 – Krontihene

Bawumia is a ‘conman’, he sweet talked us in 2016 – Krontihene

The Krontihene of the Anum traditional area, Osahene Owusu Ntow IV, has accused Vice President Bawumia of being deceptive and having misled the public during the 2016 election year.

Osahene Owusu Ntow expressed that he had initially supported the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to come to power but will no longer be the case ahead of the 2024 elections.

He attributed this support to Vice President Bawumia’s persuasive communication skills, describing them as “sweet talks.”

“I didn’t know His Excellency Alhaji Dr. Mahammudu Bawumia was more of a conman than me. He deceived us into voting for him. He consequently graded our road but the road is in its worst condition. We don’t need anything, we don’t need toilet, water all what we are asking is our roads,” he lamented.

Meanwhile, the Krontihene has issued an apology to the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, for actively campaigning against him during the 2016 general election.

Osahene Owusu Ntow IV revealed that he was among the outspoken traditional leaders who publicly opposed and rejected former President Mahama and his government. This opposition stemmed from a declaration of unwavering support for the NDC leader by an Akwamu chief.

“A certain Chief in Akwamu endorsed president Mahama, claiming that all the chiefs in Anum support him. I went on radio to debunk the claim that we all support him. I am that chief who did that but your Excellency, forgive me my sins,” he begged.

During the “Building Ghana Tour” in the Eastern Region, Osahene Owusu Ntow, the Krontihene of the Anum traditional area, welcomed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer.

In his address, the Chief highlighted several areas, including Gyakiti, Agyena, Akwamufie, Anum-Boso, among others, as having deplorable road networks.

The Chief used this observation to advise his subjects, urging them to reject governments that, in his view, neglect their development needs. Instead, he encouraged them to vote for competent leadership that prioritizes and actively works towards the improvement of essential infrastructure such as roads.

“We are now wild awake. If we could say in the past that we were born into NPP but now things have changed. We can only assure president Mahama of our votes if he’s able to convince us because those we followed couldn’t help us. This time we are not doing politics again. Mr Mahama and Hon. Ampem Nyarko (referring to the MP for Asuogyaman), the ball is in your possession, we will only shout goal when you play it into the net,” he stated.

  • We are using small flies as scape goats and leaving corrupt top officials – Domelevo

We are using small flies as scape goats and leaving corrupt top officials – Domelevo

Former Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo, has identified key challenges hindering Ghana’s pursuit of a corruption-free system.

He emphasized that while the country has the necessary institutions and capable personnel, the critical missing element is effective leadership in the fight against corruption.

mR Domelevo highlighted the pivotal role that leadership plays in shaping the trajectory of anti-corruption initiatives. He argued that strong leadership sends a powerful message throughout the system, influencing the overall approach to combating corruption.

To illustrate his point, Domelevo pointed to Singapore’s successful anti-corruption campaign led by Lee Kuan Yew. He stressed the importance of addressing corruption at its roots, specifically targeting high-ranking officials responsible for the misappropriation, theft, and mismanagement of public funds.

“We’re holding the bull by its tail. We are looking for small flies to use as examples in our fight against corruption, instead of holding the top officials accountable,” he said on JoyNews’ PM Express.

Expressing apprehension about the weakening state of the Office of the Auditor-General, Mr. Domelevo attributed the decline in effectiveness to actions taken against him by the President.

He suggested that the measures directed at him have created a climate of fear among personnel, inhibiting their ability to pursue public officials vigorously. The fear of potential repercussions akin to what he experienced seems to have cast a shadow over the office’s operations.

Mr. Domelevo also commented on the suboptimal performance of the Office of the Special Prosecutor. He pointed to frequent political interference as a significant obstacle hampering its functionality.

“The environment and the frequent political interference do not allow [the Office of the Special Prosecutor] to function the way that it should,” he said on Tuesday.

Ghana’s standing in the latest Corruption Perceptions Index reflects a lack of progress, with the country maintaining its position as 70th out of 180 countries.

The index, which measures perceived levels of corruption, awarded Ghana a score of 43 out of a possible 100. Notably, this score has remained constant since 2020.

Angel FM’s Kwadwo Dickson links Elon Musk’s brain chip to Anti-Christ

Angel FM broadcaster, Kwadwo Dickson, has made a speculative association between Elon Musk’s Neuralink project, which involves developing brain-machine interface technology, and the apocalyptic Anti-Christ.

The Anti-Christ refers to a prophesied figure who is expected to appear at the end of the world as a great adversary or opponent of Christ, representing evil and opposing the divine order. The concept of the Anti-Christ is primarily found in the New Testament of the Bible, particularly in the books of 1 John and 2 John.

According to Kwadwo Dickson, Elon Musk’s success in implanting a chip in a human brain for the first time shows the end time and confirms that the prophesy about the Anti-Christ is real.

In a video, he said, “When I was young, I was told about the anti-Christ and the use of chips in the brain to control mankind. There is a part of the prophesy that says if you resist taking the chip, you’d be punished.

Now, it is 30th January and Elon Musk and his company Neuralink have announced that they have fixed a chip in one’s mind. So if you are paralyzed, this chip can help you think and move. That is the realization of the prophesy. I am so shocked.”

Elon Musk’s controversial startup, Neuralink, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully implanting a chip in a human brain for the first time. Musk shared this development in a post on his X platform late Monday, revealing that the operation took place on Sunday, and the patient was recovering well.

This announcement holds potential importance for Neuralink’s efforts to transition its transformative technology from the laboratory to real-world applications. However, Musk’s post lacked specific details about the scientific significance of the implantation. It remains unclear how groundbreaking this development is in terms of scientific advancements in neural interface technology.

It’s noteworthy that Neuralink had obtained approval to conduct studies assessing the safety and functionality of its chip implant and surgical tools, indicating a step forward in the regulatory and experimental aspects of the project.

Neuralink’s first product would be called Telepathy, he said in another post, adding that its initial users will be people who have lost the use of their limbs.

“Forgive me my sins” – Krontihene apologises to Mahama for rejecting him

The Krontihene of the Anum traditional area, Osahene Owusu Ntow IV, has issued an apology to the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, for actively campaigning against him during the 2016 general election.

In a surprising revelation, Osahene Owusu Ntow expressed that he had initially supported the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to come to power.

He attributed this support to Vice President Bawumia’s persuasive communication skills, describing them as “sweet talks.”

“I didn’t know His Excellency Alhaji Dr. Mahamoud Bawumia was more of a Conman than me. He deceived us into voting for him. He consequently graded our road but the road is in its worst condition. We don’t need anything, we don’t need toilet, water all what we are asking is our roads,” he lamented.

GAGG Director attacked by armed robbers in Kumasi

Executive Director of the Good Governance and Advocacy Group (GAGG), Listowell Nana Kusi-Poku, was involved in an armed robbery attack on Sunday, January 28, 2023.

The incident occurred at Astoria Hotel-Ahodwo near Atinga Junction in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital.

Mr Kusi-Poku is said to have been ambushed by a two-member robbery gang around 2:00 AM on the hotel premises. He had returned from attending the funeral of a close friend’s father in Nyinahini in the Antwima Mpounua District and had chosen to spend the night in Kumasi.

According to Listowell’s account to The Hawknewspaper, the robbers, armed with guns, ordered him out of his car, a Toyota Hilux with registration number GN 371-23 and demanded he surrender his car key, mobile phones, and personal belongings.

The robbery incident has been officially reported to the Adiembra Police Station, prompting a team of police personnel to visit the scene and initiate an investigation into the matter.

  • GFA finally apologizes for Ghana’s poor show at 2023 AFCON

GFA finally apologizes for Ghana’s poor show at 2023 AFCON

The Ghana Football Association has extended its apologies to Ghanaians and all stakeholders for the recent disappointing performance of the senior national team, the Black Stars at the Africa Cup of Nations Cote D’Ivoire 2023.

The GFA on January 30 admitted that Ghana’s performance fell short of the high expectations “we all share, and we take full responsibility for the disappointment.”

Following a meeting of the Executive Council of the Association and Chairmen of the RFAs on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, the GFA assured all stakeholders that the requisite steps are being taken to address the issues at hand, and a thorough review of the team’s strategies, training, compensation, and overall structure is underway.

“We value the unwavering support of our stakeholders, and we commit to working tirelessly with you to ensure a stronger and more competitive team. Your loyalty and passion are the driving forces behind our efforts to rebuild and elevate the standard of Ghanaian football.

“We appreciate your understanding during this challenging time and remain dedicated to restoring the pride and success we all desire for the Ghana Black Stars. Together, we will emerge stronger and more resilient,” the GFA added.

Ghana failed to progress from the group stage of the ongoing tournament in Ivory Coast. Following this, many stakeholders called on the GFA to render an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for the bad performance. The GFA has finally done so, a week after Black Stars’ exit.

GFA’s long-awaited apology comes at a time when it is facing public scrutiny for budgeting an amount of $8.5million for the senior national team without Parliamentary approval.

Jesus receives praises from Arteta for outstanding performance in game against Forest

Mikel Arteta praised the performance of Gabriel Jesus after the Brazilian forward scored and provided an assist in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Jesus, 28, secured his fourth goal of the Premier League campaign by slotting the ball through the legs of his former teammate Matt Turner from a tight angle.

He then delivered a precise pass to set up Bukayo Saka for his second goal in three games, sealing the win for Arsenal. Although Taiwo Awoniyi scored a late goal for the hosts, it proved to be only a consolation.

Despite ongoing discussions in the January transfer window regarding Arsenal’s need for reinforcements upfront, Arteta expressed his satisfaction with the performance of his No. 9, Gabriel Jesus, at the City Ground.

He said: “We really need him [Jesus] at his best. I had a great feeling before the game and I told him.

“He had some fluid in the knee and he was struggling. He was kicking every physio out there two days ago saying, ‘I want to be on that pitch’.

“He pushed everybody to be there and when someone has that attitude, that desire in this moment, something good is going to happen because of the ability and the quality to do it.

“He was magnificent today, I think.”

Mikel Arteta downplayed a heated full-time discussion between defenders Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ben White after Arsenal’s 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest.

The two players were seen exchanging words, particularly in response to Forest’s late goal, but Arteta expressed that the incident was not a cause for concern as the team secured the win. The manager seemingly sought to minimize any potential impact of the on-field disagreement, emphasizing the overall positive outcome of the match for Arsenal.

Arteta added: “That’s pushing each other and being not happy, conceding nothing. And I have to encourage that and promote it in the right way, in a respectful way.

“Sometimes after the game, it’s too emotional and too heated, but I love that the players are pushing each other and demanding excellence.

“Today we conceded a goal that is not at the level that we want.

“Now we’re going to have a massive game against Liverpool at the top of the table. And we’re going to have to be even better than today, for sure.”

  • Newcastle taste victory against Aston Villa

Newcastle taste victory against Aston Villa

Newcastle handed Aston Villa their first home Premier League defeat in almost a year, securing a remarkable 3-1 victory.

Fabian Schar scored twice in a span of four first-half minutes, and an own goal from Alex Moreno in the second half sealed the Magpies’ win.

Ollie Watkins managed a consolation goal for Villa, who suffered their first league loss at Villa Park since February of the previous year.

Despite remaining in fourth place, Villa has played more games than league leaders Liverpool and rivals Manchester City. Tottenham could catch up if they win against Brentford on Wednesday. The Magpies, on the other hand, had faced a slump with six losses in their last seven league games but climbed to seventh with this crucial win, although they still trail Villa by 11 points.

Newcastle had initially dominated Villa in the season opener with a 5-1 win, but the fortunes of both teams changed since then. Emery’s side had been strong at home, with only Sheffield United previously managing to secure a point at Villa Park this season. In contrast, the Magpies had struggled away from home, securing only one victory.

The visitors took control early in the match, creating chances, and exposing gaps in Villa’s defense. Jacob Murphy’s precise delivery found Anthony Gordon, but Emi Martinez made a crucial save. The Magpies capitalized on their dominance, with Schar scoring two goals in quick succession from corners.

Villa failed to recover after the break, and Miguel Almiron, who replaced the injured Alexander Isak, set up Murphy for a third goal with an unfortunate own goal from Moreno. Despite Newcastle’s apparent control, Villa fought back, and Watkins scored his 50th Premier League goal with a header. However, a VAR decision denied him another goal shortly after, allowing Newcastle to hold on for the victory.

The win lifted Newcastle to seventh place, while Villa, in fourth, faces the risk of being overtaken by Tottenham in the standings.

  • Gabby Otchere-Darko is the reason Chris Hughton was appointed Ghana head coach – Edem Agbana

Gabby Otchere-Darko is the reason Chris Hughton was appointed Ghana head coach – Edem Agbana

The parliamentary candidate for Ketu North for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edem Agbana, has alleged that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko influenced the selection of Chris Hughton as the coach for the Black Stars because of the relationship they share.

His comments came after the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, leaked the $8.5 million budget of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire despite their early exit from the competition.

Edem Agbana, speaking on TV3 on January 30, 2024, noted that he is ready to defend his claim anywhere.

“As we speak, Chris Hughton was selected because of his relationship with Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko. Those of us in football know this and I am saying that if Gabby or anybody doubts this, they can take me anywhere. Some of them were selected because of their relationships with people in government. I am an angry Ghanaian football fan and also a Ghanaian whose tax is being used to pay them,” he alleged.

Edem Agbana also alleged that the government sponsored thousands of its NPP supporters and delegates to travel to Cote D’Ivoire to watch the AFCON matches and paid them $400 each.

He also mentioned that he had the opportunity to send some people to watch the games, but he refused because he was angry and disgusted by the NPP’s actions.

“Before AFCON, I had the opportunity to send about 5 people to also go and watch the game. But I refused because they sent thousands of NPP supporters and delegates and they paid them $400. After the first match, Ghana lost, and the supporters organised a press conference and said that they were going to boycott the second match with Egypt. Before the second match, $400 was paid to NPP supporters and there were 1000s of them all from the NPP. They were selected through the district chief executives to be taken to AFCON.

“They paid all of them at the time the government was unable to pay the capitation grant and finance the school feeding programme,” he added.
