Manso Nkwanta residents don’t love the NPP like before due to lack of projects – Parliamentary candidate

An aspirant in the NPP parliamentary primary for the Manso Nkwanta Constituency, Frederick Kwadwo Nkansah, has attributed the reduced support for the NPP in the area to the neglect of development projects.

He highlighted the inadequate attention given to bad roads in Manso, which has contributed to people’s disinterest. Mr Nkansah expressed the need for Manso Nkwanta to experience improved road infrastructure to enhance the NPP’s appeal in the region.

“Some time ago, the NPP was very powerful in our town because people liked the party, but now they don’t because our own town lacks development, they feel the party isn’t doing much for us,” he said.

Frederick Kwadwo Nkansah, also known as Yentumi, expressed his belief that he is the suitable candidate to lead the NPP in the Manso Nkwanta Constituency and bring about development in the area.

“I will help to complete the developmental works that has delayed in our town,” he said.

Mr. Nkansah said the NPP will unite to garner more votes in the area in December 2024 if he is given the mandate.

“The party delegates, elders in the party, and I will join forces to make our party stronger and move it forward”.

Owusu Mensah, the NPP Constituency Chairman for Manso Nkwanta, revealed that five individuals have picked forms to contest the primary in the constituency.

“The problem isn’t the candidates, but their followers. They should behave decently, We’re all in this together, and once it’s over, we’ll return to our normal lives. So they shouldn’t insult or try to start fights”, he said.

KATH to supply medicines to chronic patients via courier service

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has announced plans to provide medicines to chronic patients through a courier service in 2024.

The Chief Executive Officer, Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, has recognized the challenges faced by chronic patients who have to travel to the hospital to renew their prescriptions. The introduction of a courier service aims to alleviate these difficulties and enhance the convenience for patients in managing their chronic conditions.

He said, “under an arrangement with Ghana Post too, the supply of refill medicines by courier to our chronic stable patients scattered all over the country will save people from the stress of having to travel from their homes just for their medicines at a small fee.”

Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah spoke at the 2023 thanksgiving service, joint staff reception, best staff, and long service awards at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

He highlighted the developmental projects undertaken by KATH in the year, aimed at transforming operations and addressing challenges such as ageing infrastructure and outdated operational systems.

As part of the hospital’s transformation efforts, a fundraising project, the KATH Old Blocks Renovation, was launched to renovate aging structures. Professor Addai-Mensah noted that the fundraisers have already secured more than half of their target for the project.

“I can say on authority that less than two months after the launch of the fund-raising campaign by the Asantehene, we are about 60% through with our $10,000,000.00 target in terms of pledges and cash donations,” he said.

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) celebrated its employees at a ceremony, honoring forty-six staff from various departments. The Child Health Directorate received the award for innovation, and several doctors were recognized with Best Staff awards, including Dr Obiageli, Dr Andrew Zimbawa, Dr Doreen Amankwaa Frimpong, and Dr Barnabas Asamoah.

The awards ranged from GH₵ 5,000.00 to GH₵ 20,000.00. KATH, being a facility that receives referrals from 12 out of 16 regions in Ghana, has introduced initiatives such as mobile money (MoMo) and point-of-sale (POS) payment platforms to facilitate easy payment of bills and services.

“Go there and win” – Arteta tells Arsenal players ahead of Liverpool game

Mikel Arteta has issued a challenge for Arsenal to break a longstanding streak and secure a victory at Anfield for the first time in 11 years.

The Gunners, aiming for a Christmas Day lead in the Premier League table, will face Liverpool on Saturday.

However, Arsenal has not won against Liverpool away since September 2012, a 2-0 victory in which Arteta played in midfield.

While Arteta has overseen wins at Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham during his four years as Arsenal’s manager, Anfield has proven a challenging venue.

Next up is to leave Anfield with three points and Arteta, 41, said: “We have done it at Old Trafford, we have done it at Stamford Bridge and many other places where we haven’t done it for years.

“This is the next challenge. Go there and win. If you want to be at the top you have to go to those places and be dominant. That’s what we’re going to try to do.”

Arsenal held a 2-0 lead at Liverpool last season but was pegged back, ultimately settling for a draw.

Arteta added: “It’s going to be a great atmosphere. The two teams are in a really good moment, really good position, really strong position.

“They are going to be well placed to win it and to go for it. It’s going to be an intense match.

“You have to play better than them. You will silence the crowd if you are dominant and better than them.

“There are certain things we didn’t manage very well [last season] that we need to correct and be much better at because when they have that momentum and space they are a really dangerous team.

“We had some big, big situations after those moments when we could have killed the game and we didn’t. When you have the opportunity to do that, you have to do it.”

You keep interfering with investigations involving your appointees – Martin Kpebu to Akufo-Addo

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has disagreed with President Akufo-Addo’s assertion that he doesn’t interfere with investigations involving his appointees.

Mr Kpebu insists that the President does interfere, citing the Cecilia Abena Dapaah case as an example where Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in her clearance before investigations concluded.

According to Kpebu, if the President’s comments in such cases are not considered interference, he finds it challenging to understand what would qualify as interference. President Akufo-Addo has recently denied being a “clearing agent” for his appointees and refuted claims of interference in corruption probes.

“The president says that there is no corruption issue that has not been investigated, his comment is in relation to the Cecilia Dapaah saga where millions and millions were found with her in her bank account and in her house. It is neither here nor there. The BOST one, was he not the one that when a committee had been set up, stepped in and stopped it. What else could qualify as interference if stopping a committee from going ahead doesn’t qualify as interference?

“In Cecilia Dapaah’s case, his comments that he knew she would be cleared was certainly bad for the optics,” he stated in a 3news.com report.

Martin Kpebu highlighted another instance of President Akufo-Addo’s involvement, citing his participation in the evaluation of Ghana’s National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP).

The President has encouraged institutions involved in the anti-corruption efforts to assess the plan’s impact and make necessary adjustments.

Bad wages paid to journalists must be addressed – Information Minister

Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, has voiced concern over the insufficient salary and remuneration structures for journalists in the country.

He pointed out that the challenges with low salaries have contributed significantly to the low press freedom index in 2023.

Addressing the second Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) dinner night in Accra, Oppong-Nkrumah called on media owners to prioritize fair compensation for journalists, stressing that adequate remuneration is crucial for instilling confidence in the media sector.

“If you look at the world press freedom index that was released in the year 2023, the single item that dragged Ghana down the most if you read the report in detail is the welfare and the economic conditions of journalists in Ghana.

“You and I who work in this industry know that there are many of our brothers and sisters who at
the end of the month don’t get a salary. Many don’t even get their statutory payment made on their behalf by their employers.”

“There are many who don’t have the necessary pension deductions made and saved in a pension fund for them for the day when they are no longer in active service. These are issues that we as journalists when you talk about your employers won’t be happy with you, these are issues that we must pay attention to.

“We like talking about the issues in other industries. But for once, let’s also pay attention to this issue in our industry,” he stated.

I haven’t recovered from my mother’s death – AK Songstress

Akosua Kwakye, widely known as AK Songstress, has opened up about the impact of her mother’s death on her.

In an interview with Amansan Krakye on Cape Coast-based Property FM, she shared that she has not completely overcome the loss of her dear mother.

The singer mentioned that this is the first time she has experienced the death of someone so close to her.

She remarked “The death of my mother has really affected me and this is the first time that someone who is so close to me has passed away to eternity. It is a big blow to me because it’s my first time and I’ll say that it has really humbled me and still I have not recovered fully,” she sorrowfully said.

“I’m still struggling to get over it which is very difficult and so I have not fully recovered from the sudden demise of my mother who has been very supportive,” he added.

Let’s impeach Akufo-Addo for not assenting to ‘Witchcraft bill’, others – Mahama Ayariga

Bawku Central Member of Parliament (MP), Mahama Ayariga, has called on Parliament to have President Akufo-Addo impeached for refusing to assent to the “Witchcraft Bill” and two others.

In his submission in Parliament, he accused President Akufo-Addo of violating the 1992 Constitution. Mr Ayariga argued that the President missed the opportunity to object to the Bill before Parliament passed it.

According to him, once the bill is passed, the President cannot unilaterally decide not to assent and should instead take the matter to the Supreme Court.

Following the Speaker’s ruling, the former Information Minister called for Parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings against the President.

“I think that what we should be beginning to do now is to trigger the constitutional provisions for impeaching the president. President Akufo-Addo has violated the constitution and we must not take it lightly. We should begin to trigger that constitutional provision to have him impeached.”

The bills in question are two amendments to the Criminal and Other Offences Act to criminalise accusations of witchcraft, abolish the death penalty, and the Wildlife Resources Bill.

According to the president, parts of the bills infringe on the constitution of the republic and the financial constraint on the Consolidated Fund has not been taken into account, hence his refusal to sign those bills.

Speaker Alban Bagbin however, disagrees with the president, whom he argues was “ill-informed.”

Are prices of tomatoes, onions, others decreasing this Christmas? – Gabby Otchere-Darko asks public

A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko wants to know if the prices of food items in the market have seen a decline this Christmas season.

Staple foods, such as onions and tomatoes, are experiencing a decline in prices in the market during this festive season, marking the first time this has occurred, according to a retired economist.

Gabby Otchere-Darko shared this information in a post on December 21, stating that the retired economist conveyed these insights during a conversation on December 20.

“People forget that this is the first time in the history of Christmas in Ghana that the price or virtually ALL food staples is either stable or on the decline. Vegetables, Onion and Tomatoes, rice, maize…”

Refusing to unquestioningly accept the claim, Gabby Otchere-Darko sought input from users on X to share their market experiences.

“People forget that this is the first time in the history of Christmas in Ghana that the price or virtually ALL food staples is either stable or on the decline. There is poverty, misery due to Chieftaincy conflicts in Upper West – Regional Minister

Upper West Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, has given assurance to the chiefs and people of the region, particularly in Jirapa, that he will work to maintain the existing peace in the municipality.

While addressing kingmakers, the Minister emphasized that Jirapa has the potential to become the fastest-developing municipality in the region.

He highlighted the numerous educational and institutional facilities in the area, stating that peace is crucial for the community to realize its developmental potential.

”Chieftaincy conflict has never been a friend to us, what they bring in their wake is poverty, misery and lack of development and we don’t want that for our beloved Jirapa,” he said.

The Jirapa skin and elders, including the chief of Tugo, Naa Daniel Tangba, visited the office of the Upper West Regional Minister to inform him of the successful completion of the final funeral rites for the late paramount chief of Jirapa, Naa Ansolee Ganaa II.

During the meeting, they unanimously endorsed the Jirapa regent, Naa Justice Dinah Donglabong, as the successor. Additionally, the delegation invited the Regional Minister to the coronation of Naa Justice Donglabong Dinah scheduled for December 30, 2023.

Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih commended the Kingmakers for the efficient and peaceful manner in which they conducted their activities to arrive at a decision.

He encouraged the kingmakers and all individuals involved in the nomination, enskinment, and out-dooring of the new chief to adhere to due process.

”Let’s do things in conformity to the dictates of the laws of Ghana. As you go back to jirapa to continue the processes, you have to be measured and do things in moderation.”

“For us here, we don’t have a side we are supporting. What we know is to ensure that there is peace and harmony in Jirapa,” he added

Dr. Bin Salih warned, ”We will not allow any individual or any group of persons to disturb the peace we are enjoying in Jirapa”.

Principal State Attorney at the Office of the Attorney General’s Department in the Upper West region, lawyer Saeed Abdul Shakur, was clear and unequivocal regarding the stance of the Upper West Regional Security Council on chieftaincy issues.

”We also want to make it clear that we do not have a hand or whatsoever in the chieftaincy matters in Jirapa. We don’t have a side as chieftaincy matters are concerned. The welfare of the people is the principal responsibility of the regional minister ably supported by the rest of us,” he disclosed.

Lawyer Saeed Abdul Shako advised that individuals dissatisfied with any issues related to chieftaincy matters should seek redress through the appropriate channels, emphasizing resorting to the judicial process instead of taking the law into their own hands.

He highlighted four channels for resolving grievances: the Judicial Council of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs, the Judicial Council of the National House of Chiefs, and the Supreme Court.

Additionally, he issued a warning that the state will take strong action against anyone or group of persons going against the established legal processes.

We will protect 2024 election votes, results will reflect your will – Mahama promises electorates

Former President John Mahama has affirmed his commitment to ensuring that the true voice of Ghanaians is accurately represented in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

During an end-of-year gathering at his office in Cantonments on Wednesday, December 20, Mr. Mahama reassured members of his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including national executives, Members of Parliament, and Parliamentary Candidates, of the party’s readiness for the elections.

He underscored the significance of securing and counting every vote to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.

Mr. Mahama expressed his determination by acknowledging the frustration of individuals who voted for him but felt that their votes were not adequately protected.

“We are going to leave no stone unturned. We will make this election a true reflection of the people’s will. We are going to make sure that the people’s votes are protected. I have heard enough of people walking up to me and telling me we voted for you but you did not protect our votes.”

“We are going to protect their votes and make sure that the outcome of the elections will be a reflection of what the people of Ghana want,” he assured.

“I’m not here to party and get caught up in the glitz and glamour” – Anthony Joshua ahead of fight with Otto Wallin

Anthony Joshua is prioritizing defeating Otto Wallin above all else in preparation for their Saturday bout in Riyadh.

While a victory could potentially set up a much-anticipated fight against Deontay Wilder, who is facing Joseph Parker in the co-main event, Joshua is emphasizing concentrating on his performance rather than getting caught up in the “glitz and glamour” surrounding potential future matchups.

He said: “I’m here to fight.

“Of course I’m tense because I want to perform, I want to win. I’ve got that urge to win and I want to hurt my opponent as well.

“I’m not here to party and get caught up in the glitz and glamour.”

Anthony Joshua’s demeanor has been a focal point in the lead-up to the showdown with Otto Wallin. While the former world champion attributes the absence of his usual bravado to concentration, Wallin, his confident opponent, remains skeptical about the explanation.

Wallin said: “From what I see, he seems very stiff and tense.

“Maybe he’s fed up with all this stuff.

“It won’t be an upset [if I win]. Stop calling it an upset.”

Organizers are hopeful that both Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder successfully navigate their respective challenges, paving the way for a potential head-to-head battle between the two in the future. Despite recent comments from Wilder questioning Joshua’s “heart” to face him, there have also been indications of mutual respect between the fighters.

    He told the BBC: “I don’t want to say he’s 100% afraid, but I think he’s 75%.

“We’ll see what happens. The future is bright and we are further [in talks] than we’ve ever been in history. I can say that with certainty.

“Money hasn’t been the issue. It comes with [Joshua] not having the heart, the will, the courage to step in the ring.”

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Koduah, has issued a stern warning to certain government appointees whose actions are affecting the party’s popularity.

According to him, all who feel they are no longer capable of handling the task assigned to them should quickly quit their jobs for more competent individuals to be appointed.

“If you are tired, resign and leave so the party can retain power,” he said in his address at the party’s annual Thanksgiving service held at the party headquarters.

“If you are a Minister, a CEO or an MMDCE and you have not been reshuffled and you think you are tired, resign, don’t sabotage the party,” he added.

He has also called on President Akufo-Addo to swiftly undertake a reshuffle of his government.

In his plea to the President, Mr Koduah emphasized the need for changes within the government, stating, “It is time for some changes in the government so we get some new faces to continue. We believe that if we get new appointments, we will be able to retain power in the next election.”

Crystal Palace and Brighton end game in stalemate

Danny Welbeck’s late header secured a 1-1 draw for Brighton against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Jordan Ayew opened the scoring for Palace just before halftime, capitalizing on a mistake by Seagulls goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

The first half was largely uneventful, with few scoring opportunities.

Eberechi Eze made a second-half return from injury and had chances to extend Palace’s lead, but Brighton dominated the late stages.

The draw marked the fifth consecutive 1-1 result between the rivals at Selhurst Park. Overall, the match featured little excitement in the early stages, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances.

Verbruggen’s mistake led to Ayew’s goal, but Brighton responded in the second half. Welbeck, introduced as a substitute, headed home the equalizer late in the game.

Despite opportunities for both teams, the match ended in a draw, with Palace still searching for a second league victory at home.

We advised but govt rejected our suggestions on saving the economy – World Bank Director

Outgoing World Bank Country Director, Pierre Frank Laporte, is disputing allegations of not taking adequate measures to avert Ghana’s recent economic crises.

Speaking on PM Express Business Edition on December 21, 2023, he said “We can advise. It is government decision to take the advice or not. One thing I can assure you is that we did everything in our power to prevent Ghana from getting to that state, he disclosed.

Mr. Laporte rejected the suggestion that the World Bank could have utilized project funds and other financial support as leverage to influence the Ghanaian government’s approach to managing the economy. He emphasized that decisions approved by the World Bank Board for projects are binding and cannot be altered in the host nation.

“I cannot sit in Ghana here and say that funds should not be approved”, he stressed.

“I am not the type of Country Director who will also go out in public and events criticise a government. I will rather do my criticisms in meetings and the boardrooms which will really get the results”.

The country’s economic challenges led to its classification as debt-distressed by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund after conducting a Debt Sustainability Analysis on Ghana.

Key macroeconomic indicators, such as inflation exceeding 50%, and the government undertaking debt restructuring due to challenges in meeting debt obligations, have raised concerns about the country’s economic stability.

Mr. Laporte advised government to be strict on fiscal discipline to ensure that recent gains are sustained.

“It’s very important to focus critically on fiscal discipline, especially in an election year to ensure that the recovery that the economy is witnessing is not affected”.

Despite the recovery, he warned that things could get out of hand, if the necessary measures are not instituted.

“The World Bank also stands ready to support the country to ensure that the recent gains impact on the livelihood of Ghanaians”, he said.

2024 elections one of the biggest threats to Ghana’s economic progress – World Bank Director

The World Bank Country Director, Pierre Laporte, has affirmed the positive state of the Ghanaian economy.

Mr Laporte noted that the economy has genuinely improved to a certain extent. However, he emphasized the need for sustained efforts to ensure this marginal stability, especially as the country approaches elections next year.

The World Bank Country Director who was speaking on PM EXPRESS BUSINESS Edition said, “When you look at where Ghana’s economy was a year or two years ago and you look at the macro-economic numbers now, like inflation, you may come to accept that things have improved”.

“We still see the election year as one of the biggest threats to the marginal stability that we are witnessing. We have to do a lot to ensure that fiscal discipline is maintained,” he added.

The World Bank Country Director also said “maybe the reforms should have been early enough to deal, with the challenges with the economy then”.

The government has previously attributed one of the significant economic shocks in recent times in Ghana to the Russian-Ukraine War and the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, some economists and analysts have criticized this explanation, contending that the government did not establish the necessary shock absorbers to protect the economy from such shocks.

But responding to the issue, the World Bank Country Director argued that, even though he believes there is some element of truth, “We didn’t do well in the area of mobilising the required revenue to support the economy.”

Mr. Laporte, however, applauded the country for turning the economic situation around.

“I am responsible for other countries in the region, and I still see how they are still struggling to recover.”

He added, “It has been very difficult in Liberia, in Sierra Leone. Things are very tough, these economies that were hit by COVID-19 are also struggling.”

We clean up but find more rubbish a day after – Tema Metropolitan Assembly

Director of Sanitation at the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Wisdom Aditsey, has identified poor sanitation as the Assembly’s primary challenge.

Despite regular clean-up efforts, Aditsey informed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the persistent issue of littering and indiscriminate dumping of waste throughout the city of Tema poses a significant obstacle to maintaining cleanliness in the harbor city.

“People just throw trash everywhere, making it tough to control. We clean up, but the next morning, there’s more garbage left behind, and we have to struggle to pick it up again. It’s frustrating.”

Wisdom Aditsey stated that the Tema Metropolitan Assembly is facing challenges due to limited resources to effectively maintain cleanliness in the city. He called for support from stakeholders to address the resource constraints and enhance the assembly’s efforts in keeping the city clean.

“We need to monitor specific areas 24/7 to maintain cleanliness, but it’s expensive to hire people for constant surveillance, and the Assembly can’t afford it.”

He said despite regular public education on how to dispose waste properly, the situation was getting out of hand.

GHC3.19bn written off as bad debt by banks in October – BoG

Banks in Ghana wrote off GH¢3.19 billion as bad debt in October 2023, marking a 9.5% year-on-year increase, as revealed by the Domestic Banks Income Statement published by the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

This figure is higher than the ¢2.92 billion recorded during the same period in 2022. The provisions were made in the form of loan losses, depreciation, and other related categories.

According to the Bank of Ghana (BoG), asset quality risks rose in October 2023, indicating an increase in the Non-Performing Loans (NPL) stock and NPL ratio during that period. The industry’s NPL ratio grew to 18.3% in October 2023 from 14.0% in October 2022, attributed to a higher growth in the NPL stock and a contraction in gross loans.

Similarly, the NPL ratio adjusted for the fully provisioned loan loss category increased from 3.9% to 6.4% during the same comparative period. The NPL stock saw an 18.8% increase to ¢13.5 billion in October 2023 from ¢11.3 billion in October 2022, reflecting a deterioration in domestic currency loans.

The private sector accounted for the majority of nonperforming loans, making up 93.8% in October 2023. The overall rise in the industry NPL ratio was influenced by deteriorating NPL ratios in five economic sectors, while three sectors reported improvements during the review period.

“Since this injury I’ve had a good amount of support but significantly more hate and negativity. Believe me I don’t wanna be injured, I’m happiest when I’m playing football.

“Thanks to the understanding people that support me despite the highs or the lows, it goes a long way. Stay well, Reece.”

Reece James’ recent setback is reportedly expected to sideline him for three to four months. The right-back, who has faced recurrent fitness issues, played only 24 Premier League games since the beginning of the last season, often unable to complete a full 90 minutes in most of those appearances.

Despite being named captain under manager Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure since the summer, ongoing fitness challenges have prevented James from fully asserting his influence in the role.

NPP is filled with greedy people – Communications team member

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communication Team in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, Kofi Amponsah, has expressed dismay over what he perceives as widespread greed among the top echelons of the ruling party.

Amponsah lamented that leaders within the party have succumbed to greed, prioritizing their self-interests while neglecting the welfare of dedicated party members who have little to show for their support and commitment.

Asked by the host of the Dialogdue on NET2 TV if NPP leaders are greedy, he responded, “NPP leaders are greedy. Majority of them not some of them; NPP members are very greedy. Honestly, it is a party that we don’t want to say certain matters in public but some need to be told.

“The majority are very wicked. The likes of my MP, Seyram Alhassan and Honourable Ken who will sacrifice their own to make you happy are a few. Those people are very few in the NPP but 95% [are greedy]… sometimes you are compelled to feel regret for going round and campaigning for the NPP,” he stated.

He underscored that the party is facing a challenging campaign leading up to the 2024 elections.

Factors contributing to this challenge include the current state of the economy, the perceived neglect of grassroots members by party leaders, and the choice of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the presidential candidate over Kennedy Agyapong, whom he described as the ideal choice for the party to retain power.

Despite expressing concerns about the party’s internal dynamics, Kofi Amponsah emphasized that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) remains a more viable option in terms of governance compared to the opposition National Democratic Congress and its presidential candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama.

  • Minority worried over ‘extravagant expenditure’ as Presidency’s budget increases from GHC400m to GHC2bn

Minority worried over ‘extravagant expenditure’ as Presidency’s budget increases from GHC400m to GHC2bn

Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has raised concerns regarding the budget allocated to the Office of the President. His comments come in the wake of Parliament’s approval of GH₵2 billion for that office in the 2024 budget.

Ato Forson specifically highlighted the capital expenditure of GH₵67 million at the Office of the President, expressing uncertainty about the specific items or purposes for which this amount is allocated.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, December 21, Dr. Forson stated, “How many cars are they buying to the extent that they have to budget 67 million Ghana cedis for capital expenditure?

“Mr. Speaker, largely, this amount is for the purchase of cars. My concern is, is it because the election is approaching, and that is why the budget for the office of government machinery has increased from 1.4 billion to 2 billion,” he queried.

Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, went on to question the significant increase in the budget for the Office of the President. He noted that the budget for the office has surged from approximately GH₵400 million to GH₵2 billion.

Particularly, he raised concerns about the goods and services segment, which alone amounts to GH₵450.6 million.

“What are they using this money for? Mr. Speaker, this is according to the budget statement before us. These are things that I believe this House must demand answers from the Office of the President.

“Mr. Speaker, most of this expenditure is concentrated in the Chief of Staff’s office, particularly the Special Operations account. The details, as presented by the Office of the President in the document submitted to the Finance Committee, are something that should concern all of us,” Dr. Forson said.

Ranking Member on the Finance Committee in Parliament, Isaac Adongo, has accused the Office of the President of engaging in reckless and irresponsible expenditure following the approval of GH₵2 billion for the office in the 2024 budget. He specifically pointed out that the Chief of Staff’s office, the Press Office, and the Cabinet Secretariat under the Office of the President were identified by the Finance Committee for overspending their budget.

Adongo raised questions about the source of the additional funds spent by the Office and urged them to demonstrate leadership by avoiding overspending.

  • Ghana-led resolution on financing peace operations adopted by UN Security Council

Ghana-led resolution on financing peace operations adopted by UN Security Council

The United Nations Security Council has approved an African Resolution spearheaded by Ghana, calling for support and funding for operations addressing all threats to global peace and security in Africa.

According to an official release to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday night, this innovative Peace Support funding model goes beyond the traditional United Nations peacekeeping operations.

As outlined in the resolution, all peace support operations led by the African Union and mandated by the UN Security Council will receive funding from UN assessed contributions, covering up to 75% of their annual budgets.

The remaining funds are expected to be jointly mobilized by the United Nations and the African Union from the international community as extra-budgetary resources.

In the face of significant shortfalls in resource mobilization, the Security Council has committed to exploring all feasible options, the release noted.

“The dramatic outcome of the complex and difficult negotiations comes 10 days before the end of Ghana’s term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council,“ said the release.

“When Ghana announced its priorities at the beginning of its term in January 2022 to secure agreement of the Security Council to change its traditional response to international peace and security, especially in Africa, where violent extremism and terrorism had overtaken traditional conflicts that attracted UN peacekeeping, many had expressed skepticism.”

“Attempts in the past to agree on the use of UN assessed contributions to support African-led operations had failed in the face of opposition from some Permanent Members of the Council and other large contributors to the UN.”

During its two-year term, Ghana aspired to achieve these goals. As the President of the Council in November 2022, both President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey conducted high-level signature debates on the escalating threats of violent extremism and terrorism in Africa, focusing on the Sahel and coastal West Africa.

The release indicated that the leaders advocated for the funding of Africa-led operations through UN assessed contributions. Additionally, they recommended a balanced approach to funding, addressing both military operations and tackling the socio-economic and climatic root causes of conflicts.

“One key objective was to starve terrorists of conditions for radicalisation and recruitment from vulnerable communities,” the release emphasised.

“With the adoption of the framework resolution, it is understood that the plans of ECOWAS and relevant security initiatives in our region, such as the Accra Initiative and the Multi National Joint Task Force, battling Boko Haram, will potentially benefit from the needed resources and international support to defeat terrorism and violent extremism in the ECOWAS region.”

Commenting on the adoption of the Resolution, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey declared: “Today is a great day for Africa and for diplomacy.

“Working with our partners around the world, we have taken a giant step to end the many threats to international peace and security in our region.

“Our people deserve the peace, stability and progress that successful peace support operations will bring. The distractions to our regional integration project and the pressure on development resources from our security needs would ease as we go forward.

“I congratulate President Akufo-Addo for his leadership. I also commend our team in NewYork, my own Ministry and the Multi-Stakeholder Working Group on the United Nations Security Council, which I set up to advise me.”

  • Cap govt borrowing at 70% of GDP – Haruna Iddrisu

Cap govt borrowing at 70% of GDP – Haruna Iddrisu

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has put forward a bold proposal to limit government borrowing to 70% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

If enacted, this proposal would impose a substantial constraint on the government’s capacity to accumulate additional debt.

“This parliament must sit up and we must sit up to demand a feeling for good for all presidents and governments. I maintain that no president or government should be allowed to borrow beyond 70% of GDP,” he said during a debate on the budget allocation for the Finance Ministry on Thursday.

In addition to suggesting a cap on government borrowing, the former Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has advocated for a forensic audit into the indebtedness of the Finance Ministry to State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

He specifically highlighted entities such as Ghana Gas, ECG (Electricity Company of Ghana), and NCA (National Communications Authority) where there may be substantial debts owed by the Ministry of Finance.

“I am asking for a forensic audit as to how much money the Ministry of Finance has held on state-owned agencies, Ghana Gas, ECG, NCA. Those of them who have other holding that the office of the Chief of Staff has taken money away from them. We need to know,” he said.

As per the World Bank, Ghana’s public debt has surged from 79.6% of GDP in 2021 to over 90% in 2022, accompanied by a debt service-to-revenue ratio of 117.6%.

This escalation in debt levels raises apprehensions regarding Ghana’s capacity to meet its financial obligations and exposes the country to heightened vulnerability in the face of economic shocks.

Electoral violence is expensive and should be avoided at all cost – National House of Chiefs Electoral

The National House of Chiefs is calling on all stakeholders involved in Ghana’s electoral process to give precedence to the establishment of a peaceful and transparent environment leading up to the 2024 elections.

Emphasizing the importance of ensuring free and fair elections, the National House of Chiefs warns that neglecting this aspect may result in a return to the dark chapters of violence that have marred previous electoral events.

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, the President of the National House of Chiefs, made this appeal during a meeting held in Kumasi. He stressed that a transparent electoral process is crucial in preventing the recurrence of violence that has been associated with past elections in the country.

“The EC, political parties, media, election observers, and electorates should focus on free and fair elections and our campaigns should be based on issues. Campaigning should be decent and should be focused on issues not insults or attacks on opponents.

“The EC working with all stakeholders should continue to promote the atmosphere for free, fair and peaceful elections so that losers will accept their loss in good faith. Electoral violence is expensive and should be avoided at all costs. We have only one country. That is Ghana,” he stressed.

Check out MTN’s ‘Free After 1 Extra’ plan

MTN has introduced the ‘Free After 1 Extra’ service to enhance the customer experience for users on the MTN ‘Free After 1’ call plan.

The original ‘Free After 1’ service, initiated a few years ago, allowed customers to enjoy extended call durations after paying for the first minute of the call.

To subscribe to the ‘Free After 1 Extra’ service, customers can dial *550# and select option 6. This will activate the service, enabling users to have uninterrupted calls for 60 minutes, paying only for the first minute after every 10 minutes of conversation.

Under this new plan, subscribers will be charged for only the first minute of a 10-minute call and can continue the call for up to an hour without any interruptions. The billing system works by charging customers one minute in blocks of 10 minutes.

This improvement addresses a limitation of the previous ‘Free After 1’ plan, which required customers to end the call every 10 minutes.

The Chief Commercial Officer of MTN Ghana, Noel Kojo Ganson, stated that this enhanced plan was introduced in response to customer feedback, aiming to provide greater value and convenience.

“We are confident that the newly introduced, ‘Free After 1 Extra’ service allows customers to stay connected and enjoy uninterrupted calls with their business associates, family, and loved ones.”

“Motivated by our belief that ‘Everybody deserves the benefits of a modern, connected life, we continue to create relevant offers for each customer category to meet their unique needs and preferences.”

MTN continues to drive customer satisfaction by leveraging technology to develop products and services that deliver value. These services include Free After 1 Extra, MTN Pulse Mashup, and MTN Jara amongst others.

  • Suspending parliamentary sittings during ministerial budget approval wrong – Murtala to Second Deputy Speaker

Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has criticized Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Amoako Asiamah for his decision to suspend parliamentary sittings following a contentious voice vote that rejected the budget allocation for the Ministry of Finance.

During a debate on the government’s budgetary allocation to various ministries, including Finance, the Minority in Parliament opposed the budget, leading to a voice vote.

Murtala Muhammed, speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, expressed dissatisfaction with Asiamah’s handling of the situation, alleging that the suspension of the sitting was intentional.

Muhammed emphasized the clarity of the voice vote, asserting that the rejection of the budget was evident, yet the Second Deputy Speaker failed to provide a ruling as expected.

“A voice vote was taken and it was very clear that we rejected the budget because the NOs were heard louder than the YES, and for which reason they could not give a ruling. For me that was embarrassing.

“The moment a voice vote is taken; the speaker should be able to determine whether the Nos have it or Yes have it. And remember, the voice vote was taken two times and the second deputy Speaker didn’t give his ruling, he just said he was suspending the sitting”.

Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed pointed out that following an hour-long break, Minority MPs discovered that the ruling on the contentious voice vote had been made in the absence of many minority Members of Parliament.

“In any case, the vote had been completed. It was only that the second deputy speaker failed to rule on the voice voting. So even if we suspended sitting and we reconvened, he needed to give rulings. There wasn’t a need for a third vote to be done”.

He added “In fact, a lot of MPs were rushing there because the bell did not ring, nobody told us anything. They just got up and took the voice vote, knowing very well that there were not any members of parliament in there”.

He classified the third vote as meaningless and a deliberate action against the minority.

Akosombo dam spillage: Ablakwa to drag VRA, govt to court

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has issued a stern warning of legal action against the government and the Volta River Authority (VRA) if urgent steps are not taken within weeks to build resettlement facilities for those affected by the Akosombo dam spillage, leading to the collapse of their homes.

In an interview with Citi News on Thursday, the MP conveyed his profound concern over what he perceives as a lack of action by the government, emphasizing the ongoing distress experienced by thousands of individuals affected by the floods even months after the incident.

“What we need now really are these housing units that we are constructing. The VRA should be also constructing, If they can construct a few hundred for people, it will help. The VRA and the central government must acknowledge that there is a reason people pay taxes, there is a reason we have the contingency vote. It is for emergencies of this kind.

“The people deserve their houses back, they deserve to be compensated, and I hope that they don’t compel me to initiate a class action in court. Because at some point we can’t continue any longer with the private initiatives.

“And if we see that the government is still negligent and derelict, we will have to commence legal action. A class action to compel the government to do the right thing. I hope that we don’t have to get there,” he said.

The spilling of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong Hydro Dams commenced on September 15 due to rising water levels. Several weeks into the spillage, numerous residents in the Lower Volta Basin suffered the loss of their homes and farmlands due to the resultant floods. A total of nine districts were affected by this event.

Heartbreaking stories emerged from the South, Central, and North Tongu districts of the Volta Region, where the devastation was particularly severe. Communities such as Battor, Tefle, Mepe, Sogakope, Adidome, and Anlo found themselves submerged under water. According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO), over 26,000 people were displaced and left homeless.

In response, various institutions and individuals stepped forward to provide relief items to the affected residents. Prominent political figures, including President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahama Bawumia, visited the impacted communities. Both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership and the Minority caucus extended their assistance to the flood victims.

“The Volta River Authority (VRA) wishes to inform the public, particularly residents living along the Lower Volta River and its environs that the controlled spillage from the Akosombo dam, which began on September 15, 2023, has ended,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has indicated that an amount of GHC220 million has been allocated by the government to support the many families and communities affected by the Akosombo dam spillage.

He made this known when he presented the 2024 budget statement in Parliament.

Approximately 300 individuals affected by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams have been relocated to fully-furnished quarters, according to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu through the Safe Alternative Housing Project.

The project was undertaken by Construction Ambassadors of the First Sky Group for the building. On October 24, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, cut sod for the construction of a First Sky Group housing project to relocate 12,000 individuals in the constituency who have been displaced owing to flooding by the spillage of the Akosombo dam.

  • Resign! You can’t hold a civil service position and be campaigning for political position – Martin Kpebu to CAGD boss

Resign! You can’t hold a civil service position and be campaigning for political position – Martin Kpebu to CAGD boss

Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has joined the chorus of voices from the Minority in Parliament calling for the resignation of the Controller and Accountant General, Mr. Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem.

The demand comes in response to Mr. Kwaning-Bosompem’s decision to participate in the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primaries for the Akim Swedru Constituency.

Martin Kpebu cited Article 94(3) of the constitution, which outlines that certain officeholders, including members of the Police Service, the Prisons Service, the Armed Forces, the Judicial Service, the Legal Service, the Civil Service, the Audit Service, and others, are prohibited from contesting for the position of Member of Parliament.

According to Kpebu, in adherence to the constitution, Mr. Kwaning-Bosompem should resign from his position as Controller and Accountant General.

“The CLOGSSAG case actually says that if a civil servant becomes overt in his political affiliation, then he has to resign. It is not just about nomination alone. Let me read a part, apart from talking about the nomination, this is what it says.

“Upon a true and proper interpretation of the constitution, a member of the civil service or local government service does not have the right to remain a member of a civil service or local government service after his or her a nomination by the political party or otherwise to contest for election as a Member of Parliament.

“Moreover such a person shall resign from his or her office, immediately after his or her political activities become overt,” he said.

Martin Kpebu clarified that, according to the constitution, once an individual publicly declares their intention to run for a political position and actively engages in campaign activities before the primaries, these actions violate the stipulations outlined in Article 94(3).

This constitutional provision prohibits certain officeholders, irrespective of their political affiliation, from contesting for the position of Member of Parliament.

Kpebu emphasized that the concern lies in the public display of these political activities, and not the individual’s political alignment. He went on to state that the Controller and Accountant General’s decision to commence campaigning was considered irredeemable in the context of the constitutional prohibition.

“He is already campaigning, he has a campaign team, it’s overt. Look, this is beyond redemption. He just has to go,“ he added.

Responding to the debate that the Controller and Accountant General does not fall under the civil service, he said members of a ministry are part of the civil service, emphasizing that the government accountant is part of the Ministry of Finance, hence he is a civil servant.

“What we cannot run away from is the Controller and Accountant General is a department. It is under the Ministry of Finance and members of the ministry are civil servants.

“Mr Kwaning-Bosompem, we expect him to resign first thing tomorrow [Friday] morning,” he added.

Vin Diesel’s former assistant sues him for sexual battery

Vin Diesel, the renowned US actor, is facing legal action from his former personal assistant, Asta Jonasson, who has filed a lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault during the filming of Fast Five in 2010.

Vin Diesel, whose real name is Mark Sinclair, vehemently denies the allegations, with his lawyer stating that the actor refutes the claim in its entirety.

According to Jonasson’s lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles on Thursday, the incident occurred at Atlanta’s St Regis hotel during the production of Fast Five.

She alleges that Diesel, 56, pinned her to a wall and engaged in a sexual act on himself, disregarding her explicit statements of non-consent.

In addition to the accusations of sexual battery, Jonasson is also suing for wrongful termination, asserting that she was fired from Diesel’s company shortly after the alleged assault.

Ms Vincent did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“It was clear to her that she was being fired because she was no longer useful – Vin Diesel had used her to fulfil his sexual desires,” the suit alleges.

It adds: “Ms Jonasson felt helpless, her self esteem was demolished, and she questioned her own skills and whether a successful career would require her to trade her body for advancement.”

The former assistant also claims that another executive from the company propositioned her in the same hotel a few days before the incident with Mr Sinclair.

In addition to sexual battery, her lawsuit includes claims of gender discrimination, illegal retaliation, emotional distress and wrongful termination.

Bryan Freedman, a lawyer for Mr Sinclair, said in a written statement to CNN on Thursday: “Vin Diesel categorically denies this claim in its entirety.

“This is the first he has ever heard about this more than 13-year-old claim made by a purportedly 9-day employee.”

A lawyer for Ms Jonasson said in a statement to BBC News that her client “seeks to hold Vin Diesel and those who allowed and covered up his sexual assault accountable for their egregious actions”.

“We hope her courageous decision to come forward helps create lasting change and empowers other survivors,” said lawyer Claire-Lise Kutlay.

In addition to his prominent role in the Fast & Furious franchise, Vin Diesel has gained recognition for his performances in a variety of films, including Guardians of the Galaxy, XXX, and Riddick. Beyond his acting career, Mr. Sinclair, commonly known as Vin Diesel, is actively involved as a producer for the Fast & Furious series.

Why doesn’t Black Stars perform well, we have good talents – Akufo-Addo quizzes GFA

President Akufo-Addo has expressed his bewilderment over Ghana’s consistent underperformance in football tournaments despite the abundance of talent in the country.

The Black Stars, Ghana’s national football team, faced early exits in the last two major competitions they participated in—being eliminated at the group stages of both the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in January 2022 and the 2022 World Cup in December of the same year.

This disappointing streak follows a round of 16 exit at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where they were defeated in a penalty shootout against Tunisia. President Akufo-Addo conveyed his concerns and sought answers during a meeting with the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association on Wednesday.

“As an avid football fan, I am very much aware of the challenges that confront us, as results have not been good in recent games. But you can count on me for the necessary support,” the President said.

“We have some very good talents scattered across the globe, so I don’t understand why we shouldn’t perform in tournaments.”

Emphasizing the need for a turnaround, President Akufo-Addo urged the association to ensure the Black Stars receive the best possible preparation ahead of the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to commence in Ivory Coast in just 23 days.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo took the opportunity to remind the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and its affiliated bodies of the profound significance that football holds for the people of Ghana. The President emphasized the deep connection and passion that Ghanaians have for the sport, underscoring the importance of understanding and acknowledging the collective sentiment towards football in the country.

“Ghanaians are obsessed with football, and you have the mandate of ensuring that our game is on the right path. We have the Africa Cup of Nations in a few days, and it is our responsibility to give the technical team and the playing body the needed support to succeed in neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire.

“It’s been forty-one years since Ghana won the Africa Cup of Nations. If my memory serves me right, we have played in a couple of finals in recent times and lost on penalties in 2015. Expectations are very high, so let’s do our best to make this tournament a success.”

  • 2022 World Cup: FIFA gave Ghana $7.9m instead of $9m due to $800k debt owed by GFA

2022 World Cup: FIFA gave Ghana $7.9m instead of $9m due to $800k debt owed by GFA

The reduction in Ghana’s 2022 World Cup prize money from $9 million to $7.9 million was reportedly due to outstanding debts owed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to FIFA.

The debt, totaling over $800,000, includes expenses related to the travel and accommodation of officials, as well as the participation of Ghana’s U-17 and U-20 Women’s national teams in FIFA tournaments.

Additionally, cautions incurred by Ghana contributed to the overall debt. The GFA confirmed the debt and its impact on the prize money, acknowledging the need to settle outstanding obligations to FIFA.

“The GFA was entitled to $9m for placing between 17 and 32 in the FIFA World Cup [in Qatar], subject to the deduction of all outstanding debts on the account of the association at FIFA,” Henry read a portion of a letter he said the FA wrote to the Sports Ministry on June 14, 2023.

He explained that every member association of FIFA has a specific account designated at FIFA for payment of money due it.

“…the association also received $25,000 credit relating to 2018. This was money FIFA owed the GFA as far back as 2018 and FIFA added it to our World Cup prize money for participating in the 2022 World Cup and this was fully contained in the letter we sent to the Minister.

“FIFA has deducted the outstanding debts in the sum of $800,131.23 from 2016 to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, including fees for cautions, flights, accommodation, charges.

“This leaves us with an amount of $8,224, 868.77.  We wish you to remind of you the payment of $300,000 we took from the bank to pay the three Black Stars coaches on behalf of the Ministry for qualifying Ghana to the World Cup against Nigeria per their contract.

“So after all the deductions and what not, the net balance is $7,899,868.77 which is currently to our credit at the bank,” he added.

Henry, however, did not clarify if the loan the FA took to pay the coaches as their performances bonus was deducted by FIFA or GFA deducted it and paid to the bank.

He concluded by saying that, the GFA will publish the details.

  • Allocate 70% of GETFund to infrastructure – Africa Eduwatch to Education Ministry

Allocate 70% of GETFund to infrastructure – Africa Eduwatch to Education Ministry

Senior Programmes Officer at Africa Education Watch, Divine Kpe, has urged the Ministry of Education to allocate at least 70% of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to address infrastructure challenges in schools.

He specifically called for 50% of the allocation to focus on basic education infrastructure, with 30% dedicated solely to providing desks.

Mr. Kpe made these recommendations during a presentation of findings from a Scooping Study Report on the Impact of Desk Deficits in Public Basic Schools on Girls’ Participation in Basic Education in Ghana.

“GETFund allocation to infrastructure projects across all levels of education increased from GHC 198.7 million in 2021 to GHC 856.0 million in 2022 (representing a 331 per cent increment) and thereafter declined to GHC 383.9 million in 2023 (representing a 55 per cent decline).”

“On the other hand, the allocation to non-infrastructure projects increased from GHC 116.9 million in 2021 to GHC 503.3 million in 2022 (representing a 330 per cent increment), and further increased to GHC 978.5 million in 2023 (representing a 95 per cent increment),” he noted.

Mr Kpe urged the MoE and District Assemblies to commit to a policy of ensuring that no basic school infrastructure contract was awarded without the full complement of school furniture, including desks and chairs.

He said they should design and implement a furniture resource mobilisation strategy that involved Coporate Ghana, Faith-Based Organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations, and the Forestry Commission. He stressed that could be done within the context of the Infrastructural Planing and Development Policy Framework.

Mr Kpe said the unavailability of desks at basic schools had a bearing on the rate of school dropout, saying, most pupils absented themselves or did not go to school due to the unavailability of desks. He said the situation was more worrying for girls, who did not have sitting positions and ended up exposing themselves.

Meanwhile, a total of 2.3 million basic school pupils, representing 40 per cent of pupils from Kindergarten to Junior High School, across Ghana, are without desks as of a 2021, according to data from the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) Education Management Information System.

While the national desk shortage is 40 per cent, all the six regions in the northern part of Ghana, together with the Bono East and Oti regions have ratios above the national percentage. The rate in North East is as high as 80 per cent; Northern, 70 per cent; Savannah, 60 per cent; Upper East, 60 per cent; Bono East, 60 per cent; Upper West, 50 per cent and Oti, 50 per cent.

  • Pope Francis has not authorised blessing of same-sex marriages – Catholic Bishops’ President

Pope Francis has not authorised blessing of same-sex marriages – Catholic Bishops’ President

President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, has reiterated that Catholic priests cannot bless same-sex marriages or unions.

This reaffirmation comes in response to reports suggesting that Pope Francis formally permitted Roman Catholic priests to bless same-sex unions, which has sparked various opinions on social media.

Rev. Gyamfi clarified that Pope Francis did not direct or approve Catholic priests to bless marriages of gays and lesbians or any member of the LGBTQ community.

He emphasized that the Vatican’s document, “Fiducia Supplicans,” focuses on the pastoral care of individuals in same-sex relationships, offering them spiritual support and guidance.

“The Declaration makes a distinction between liturgical (sacramental) blessings and pastoral blessings which may be given to persons who desire God’s loving graces in their lives. The Declaration says that these pastoral blessings “are meant for everyone; no one is to be excluded from them” (par. 28).”

It also notes that in “a brief prayer preceding this spontaneous blessing, the ordained minister could ask that the individuals have peace, health, a spirit of patience, dialogue, and mutual assistance—but also God’s light and strength to be able to fulfil his will completely (par. 38),” he added.

Rev. Gyamfi added that the statement also emphasized that no one should be excluded from these blessings.

“The Declaration deals with the possibility of “blessing couples in irregular situations and same-sex couples without officially validating their status or changing in any way the Church’s perennial teaching on marriage”.

The Vatican said on Monday in a landmark ruling approved by Pope Francis that Roman Catholic priests can administer blessings to same-sex couples as long as they are not part of regular Church rituals or liturgies.

A document from the Vatican’s doctrinal office, which effectively reversed a declaration the same body had issued in 2021, said such blessings would not legitimise irregular situations but be a sign that God welcomes all.

It should in no way be confused with the sacrament of heterosexual marriage, it added.

It said priests should decide on a case-by-case basis and “should not prevent or prohibit the Church’s closeness to people in every situation in which they might seek God’s help through a simple blessing”.

  • We are sorry for the abuse against Shalimar Abbiusi – New Force to Belgium, EU

We are sorry for the abuse against Shalimar Abbiusi – New Force to Belgium, EU

The political movement New Force has issued a sincere apology to the Kingdom of Belgium, the European Union (EU) committee, and the international community for the mistreatment of Shalimar Abbiusi by Ghana’s security agencies.

New Force expressed regret for Shalimar’s unsettling experience stating that it tarnished Ghana’s human rights reputation and its standing within the international community.

Shalimar was arrested and detained after appearing in the political movement’s campaign video, facing charges of obtaining a student residency permit by false declaration and experiencing a prolonged detention by the National Investigation Bureau, along with the alleged search and ransacking of her home.

After the state prosecutors dropped all charges against Shalimar Abbiusi, she was subsequently rearrested by the Immigration Service outside the courtroom. Following her rearrest, she was deported the next day.

“The movement acknowledges the strain on her family and sympathizes with their aggrieved feelings over reported gross misconduct and malpractice by trusted officials. Shallie has since returned to the Kingdom of Belgium. The New Force stands for the empowerment of people,” the New Force said in a statement.

The New Force group called on the international community not to reciprocate the displeasure experienced by the country in response to Shalimar Abbiusi’s treatment.

“We hope that Ghana reconsiders their reported misuse of power for political interests and realigns herself with a robust legal framework that preserves our global standing as a country of justice and peace. To us, the integrity of our country and its international reputation is more important than partisan political interest,” it added.

We are looking forward for a better performance – GFA President tells Black Stars

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku, has expressed hope that the Black Stars will deliver a better performance at the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In the last edition of the tournament hosted in Cameroon, Ghana exited the group phase with just one point, recording a draw against Gabon and suffering defeats against Morocco and Comoros.

With less than a month before the start of the 34th edition of AFCON in Ivory Coast, Okraku is optimistic that the team will improve and deliver a more commendable performance.

“Indeed, at the last outing, it did not go well. Everybody in Ghana saw what happened but we are looking forward to a much better outing at the AFCON in Ivory Coast.

“Fortunately for us, it is happening at our next door and I will call on all Ghanaians to remain supportive of the Black Stars because that is our national team we have.

“Even if the boys are not playing scintillating football, we have to throw weight behind them because that is our national team,” he added.

Ghana, whose last AFCON victory was in 1982 in Libya, has been placed in Group B for the upcoming tournament alongside Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. The 34th edition of AFCON is scheduled to take place from Saturday, January 13, through to February 11, 2024.

  • WAEC has still not paid examiners, invigilators due to govt’s indebtedness – Nortsu-Kortoe

WAEC has still not paid examiners, invigilators due to govt’s indebtedness – Nortsu-Kortoe

The Minority Spokesperson on Education, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, has highlighted that the Ghanaian government’s indebtedness to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) is adversely affecting the organization’s operations.

Despite releasing both the BECE and WASSCE results, WAEC has reportedly not paid invigilators, examiners, and other service providers.

Nortsu-Kotoe, speaking in Parliament, revealed that funds had been released by the Finance Ministry to the Education Ministry to settle the debt, and he urged the Education Ministry to promptly clear the outstanding amount after the approval of GH₵29.5 billion for the Ministry’s 2024 expenditure.

“But interestingly, the Ministry of Finance indicated that they do not owe WAEC. That the sum of GH₵129,839,720 WAEC said they owe, the ministry of Finance said they did not owe that and that per their records they have released all monies to the Ministry of Education.

“So the committee has directed that the Minister for Finance or his representative, the Minister for Education and WAEC should meet the committee to resolve the matter. The one who represented the Ministry of Finance at the meeting indicated that for the WASCCE, they made it part of the amount released for the free SHS  so on record they do not owe WAEC any sums of money.

“So we need to meet the Minister of Education, the Minister for Finance and WAEC to resolve the problem immediately,” he said.

Peter Nortsu-Kotoe further disclosed that Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum confirmed to the Education Committee of Parliament that a piece of land designated for building an office for UNESCO in Accra had been sold to a private developer.

“We also realised that UNESCO, that is, United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation is one agency under the Ministry of Education and they’re housed in an obscure corner in the Ministry of Education.

“But unfortunately, the piece of land allocated for their office long time ago, Mr. Speaker, I made it known here the other time when we were debating the budget that the land had been sold. The Deputy Minister for Land and Natural Resources vehemently denied it.

“But at the meeting to discuss the budget we were told by the Minister of Education or he confirmed that the land had been sold and to a private individual, and he’s taking steps to retrieve the land for the Ministry of Education so that UNESCO can make use of that land,” he said.

Police investigating NDC’s Mustapha Gbande over inciteful political message

The Ghana Police Service is currently investigating the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Mustapha Gbande, for making inciteful comments ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Mr Mustafa Gbande has asked Ghanaians to arm themselves with guns and machetes when they go to vote in the 2024 general elections.

He made these remarks on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ programme, where he said that he had advised the NDC leadership to prepare in advance for the NPP’s anticipated alleged misdoings.

He said that this was the only way to ensure free and fair elections and to prevent the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) from intimidating and harassing the voters.

“They think the way to go is violence, so I’ve told our leaders that if possible, let’s prepare twice the NPP and wait for them, when you are going to the polling station, put a cutlass in your pocket, that way nobody will misbehave towards you. If we do, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not be able to misbehave toward us,” he said.

On December 21, the Police in a Facebook post noted that they “have commenced investigations into the matter in line with the laws and democratic values of the country.”

Mr Gbande’s statement has sparked a lot of reactions and criticisms from the public and the political parties, who have condemned his call for violence and lawlessness.

Meanwhile, the Police has noted that it will continue to work with other sister security agencies diligently and patriotically to maintain the peace and security in the country “which has made Ghana a beacon of hope on the continent and beyond.”

“We wish to assure the public that under our watch no one will be allowed to undermine the peace, security, law and order in our beloved country,” the statement added.

If injured Tariq Lamptey is not playing for Brighton, how can he play for Ghana – Brighton boss

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Roberto de Zerbi has questioned the inclusion of Tariq Lamptey in Ghana’s 55-man provisional AFCON squad.

Lamptey is currently recovering from an injury sustained in Brighton’s game against Nottingham Forest. In November, Roberto de Zerbi had mentioned that Lamptey would be out for an extended period due to his latest injury.

“We have lost Ansu for a long time. Same for Lamptey, they will be out for long time,” he said.

But Chris Hughton has unveiled a 55-man provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with notable inclusions such as Thomas Partey, Tariq Lamptey, and Kamaldeen Sulemana, despite ongoing injury concerns.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the list on December 20, just 24 days before the tournament kicks off.

Reacting to this, Roberto wondered if Hughton was up to speed on the current status of Tariq Lamptey.

“Maybe the coach of Ghana doesn’t watch the Premier League because I don’t know how much time we have playing without Tariq Lamptey and he wants to play with Lamptey. He is not able to play with Brighton, how can he play with Ghana,” he said.

Banking industry records 4.2% contraction in shareholders’ funds – BoG

Shareholders’ funds in the banking industry contracted by 4.2% to ¢25.4 billion in October 2023, according to the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

This decline is in contrast to the 11.9% growth observed in October 2022.

The Bank of Ghana attributes this contraction to losses from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, impacting the reserves of banks.

Additionally, the slower growth in paid-up capital, from 4.4% in October 2022 to 0.4% in October 2023, has contributed to the reduction in shareholders’ funds.

The Bank of Ghana anticipates an improvement in the equity position of banks as they intensify recapitalization efforts to meet the 2025 deadline set by the central bank.

When you say that about her, it is not a good look on you – Reggie Rockstone advises Pappy over Yvonne Nelson insults

In response to the recent controversy involving Pappy Kojo’s inflammatory remarks towards actress and entrepreneur Yvonne Nelson at Medikal’s Planning And Plotting concert, legendary Ghanaian hiplife musician Reggie Rockstone, also known as The Hiplife Grand Papa, has offered advice to Pappy Kojo.

The meeting between Reggie Rockstone and Pappy Kojo took place at Rockstone’s popular Rockz Waakye restaurant in Accra.

During the discussion, Rockstone advised Pappy Kojo to refrain from disrespecting Yvonne Nelson and using vulgar language against her, emphasizing the importance of treating her with respect.

Rockstone also highlighted Yvonne’s stature as an actress and entrepreneur, urging Pappy Kojo to acknowledge and celebrate her achievements instead.

“What the hell is going on with you and….. What’s happening with you and my sister. In the beginning it was funny and it started to get a little uncomfortable. Yvonne is a beautiful Queen, when you talk about her like that it will stay for years. It’s not a good look,” Rockstone said.

Pappy kept replying “I hear you.”

But at the end of the video, Pappy made a derogatory comment that indicates that the advice from Rockstone fell on a deaf ear.

The controversy surrounding rapper Pappy Kojo’s performance at Medikal’s Planning And Plotting concert involves him hurling profanity at actress and entrepreneur Yvonne Nelson on stage.

The incident has sparked criticism and raised concerns about the appropriateness of his actions during the concert.

“You simply took an investment risk and lost out” – NAM1’s Laywer tells Menzgold customer in court

The lawyer for the defunct gold dealership firm, Menzgold, while in court on Wednesday told a customer who invested more than GH₵5 million but could not earn the same or more that “you simply took an investment risk and lost out.”

During the cross-examination of the prosecution witness, Lawyer Kwame Akuffo questioned the witness, a civil engineer, about the perceived risk he took by investing heavily in Menzgold.

The civil engineer, Stephen Attippoe, explained that he relied on representations made by Nana Appiah Mensah, Menzgold, and the Brew Marketing Consult. However, he later discovered that the accused persons were operating without the necessary licenses.

Stephen Attipoe invested GH₵5.2 million within three months and received a lump sum of GH₵502,000. He had seven separate trading agreements with Menzgold, making all purchases at the Brew Marketing Consult office located at Spintex.

The witness clarified that the Menzgold trading agreements were produced and signed at the Tema Branch Office, following the laid-down procedure of the company. The documents obtained from Menzgold for each transaction included gold trading agreements, purchase of gold receipts, gold vault service receipts, and receipts for commissions on each transaction.

The details provided indicate that on various dates between June 1, 2017, and July 27, 2018, Stephen Attipoe made a total of seven investments with the accused persons involving the purchase of gold from Brew Marketing Consult. The breakdown of the transactions is as follows:

    1. June 1, 2017: Purchased 5 kilograms of 22-carat pure gold, paid GH¢1 million, and a commission of GH¢64,500 (6.4%).
    2. June 5, 2018: Purchased another 5 kilograms of 22-carat pure gold, paid GH¢1 million, and a commission of GH¢64,500 (6.4%).
    3. June 1, 2018: Purchased 5 kilograms of 22-carat pure gold, paid GH¢1 million, and a commission of GH¢64,500 (6.4%).
    4. June 1, 2018: Purchased 3 kilograms of 22-carat pure gold, paid GH¢600,000, and a commission of GH¢80,700.
    5. June 27, 2018: Purchased 3 kilograms of 22-carat plus gold, paid GH¢600,000, and a commission of GH¢80,700.
    6. July 23, 2018: Purchased 4 kilograms of 22-carat gold, paid GH¢800,000, and a commission of GH¢50,600.
    7. July 27, 2018: Purchased 1 kilogram of 22-carat gold, paid GH¢200,000, and a commission of GH¢12,900.

In total, Stephen Attipoe invested GH¢5,200,000 for a total of 26 kilograms of gold and paid a cumulative non-refundable commission of GH¢335,400 for these investments.

In July 2018, Stephen Attipoe received a lump sum payment of GH¢504,000 from Menzgold as his monthly 12% interest on the twenty-six kilograms of gold, as per the agreements signed.

In September 2018, he received an ECOBANK cheque with a face value of GH¢240,000 from Menzgold as his interest on only ten kilograms of gold. However, when he presented the cheque at the Tema Main branch of ECOBANK, the cheque was dishonored.
