  • Let’s allow Kudus to develop at West Ham and leave him out of AFCON – Ghanaian fan pleads

Let’s allow Kudus to develop at West Ham and leave him out of AFCON – Ghanaian fan pleads

Mohammed Kudus‘ participation in the 2023 AFCON has been resisted by a Ghanaian fan who believes the West Ham player will be better off should he miss the tournament.

In a post on X, sports journalist, Fentuo Tahiru Fentuo, a fan, Selase, had written a letter petitioning for Kudus to be left out to enable him to have enough time to solidify his good works at West Ham, which had drawn immense admiration from supporters of the international club.

He believes that Kudus’ performance will put Ghana in the limelight should he be allowed to focus on playing for West Ham. The fan also believes the Black Stars is currently not prepared to win the 2023 AFCON.

“Is there a way we as a nation can agree to allow Kudus to be excuse from next years Afcon?. I believe the guy is on a mission that will Project Ghana and Africa positively. His coming at this time that he is building a rhythm with his team mates will affect him negatively believe me. Ghana’s current team is not ready for a cup. Therefore we should allow Kudus to develop, which will eventually benefit Ghana,” he wrote.

Kudus is expected to be absent from West Ham camp for about a month due to the tournament that will take place from January 13 to February 11, 2024, in the Ivorian cities of Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.

Ghana will be based in Abidjan, where they will play Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique in the group stage.

Kudus has proven to be a great asset to West Ham, and for this young fan, he has been mesmerized by Kudus’ attack, which saw to the club’s recent victory.

Also, a young West Ham fan is praying for Ghana to be kicked out of the 2023 African Cup Of Nations (AFCON) to enable the Hammers have back Mohammed Kudus.

“Let’s just hope that Ghana gets knocked out early so we can have him back. I’m telling y’all. He brings like the full package. He defends alright and his attack just flawless. He is so good and I love it when he does that celebration. It’s so good,” the male fan said.

Over the weekend, Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen, and Lucas Paquetá delivered an early Christmas gift to east London, orchestrating West Ham United’s commanding 3-0 Premier League triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Kudus, maintaining his exceptional form, netted two goals in the first half, while Bowen secured the third after the break. Paquetá contributed significantly with three assists as the Hammers climbed to seventh place with 27 points from 17 games.

In the 22nd minute, Kudus showcased his prowess with a remarkable pitch-length counter, initiated by Emerson, Edson Álvarez, and Paquetá. Breaking free down the right, Kudus cut inside and unleashed a left-footed drive from 20 yards, beating Nelson Semedo and goalkeeper Dan Bentley.

Just ten minutes later, Kudus found himself in a familiar position, courtesy of a brilliant diagonal pass from the Brazilian. Racing past former Hammer Craig Dawson, he confidently slotted the ball home with his right foot.

Already, West Ham United manager David Moyes has expressed his concern about the impact of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on his team.

“We’ve got Mo Kudus, and we’ve also got Saïd Benrahma from Algeria and Nayef Aguerd from Morocco. The disappointing bit, and the thing we’ll need to manage, is losing those players for a month during the African Cup of Nations. But that’s part of it,” he said.

Over 5 billion fans will be watching 2023 Africa Games to be hosted by Ghana – Sports Minister

Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has stated that he anticipates a global audience of more than five billion people to watch the 2023 Africa Games.

“In terms of online and global viewing, we are expecting more than 5 billion because we are partnering with the Olympic channel as one of the media partners.”

Achimota School’s Tyrone Marhguy ‘blows’ SAT exams he took in SHS 2

Tyrone Iras Marhguy, the Rastafarian student who faced initial admission challenges at Achimota School due to his dreadlocks, has achieved a remarkable feat by attaining the 99th percentile globally in the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

The SAT is a widely recognized and competitive examination used by many universities in the United States to assess students’ abilities before they enroll in university.

Marhguy scored an impressive 1500 out of a maximum 1600, ranking in the 99th percentile. This means he performed better than 99% of all the candidates who took the examination in the year 2022. Such a high score is particularly noteworthy as only 1 out of every 100 candidates typically attains this level of achievement.

In expressing his gratitude for his academic success, Marhguy acknowledged the invaluable role played by Achimota School in his educational journey.

As he contemplates his future academic endeavors after securing 8As in the 2023 WASSCE, Marhguy is setting his sights on pursuing studies in either Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.

He is eyeing tertiary institutions such as Harvard, Cornell, Ashesi and Academic City.

In an exclusive interview with Citi TV, Marhguy outlined his preferences, stating, “In Ghana, it’s Ashesi, Academic City, and in terms of courses, it will be Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering. I am also exploring opportunities at prestigious international institutions such as Columbia, Harvard, MIT, and Cornell.”

  • GHC786.9M approved by Parliament for EC towards 2024 elections

GHC786.9M approved by Parliament for EC towards 2024 elections

On Wednesday, Parliament approved a sum of GH¢786.9 million for the Electoral Commission’s (EC) services for the year ending December 31, 2024.

The House also urged the Finance Ministry to address the GH¢140.7 million shortfall to ensure that the processes and conduct of the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections are not compromised.

Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, and Chairman of the Special Budget Committee of Parliament, moved the motion for the House to approve the budgetary allocation for the EC.

He explained that the additional request of GH¢140.7 million was what the Commission had budgeted for, and unfortunately, the Finance Ministry could only allocate GH¢786.9 million to it.

“The Commission insists that without the GH¢140.7 million, it will be difficult to conduct timeously and in a proper way, the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections as slated for December 2024.”

The Majority Leader explained that the Special Budget Committee deemed it necessary to insist on providing the Electoral Commission (EC) with the GH¢140.7 million.

The EC has plans to undertake various activities and procure equipment for the successful conduct of the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.

According to the Majority Leader, these activities include the procurement of additional BVDs (Biometric Verification Devices) and BVRs (Biometric Voter Registration machines) to increase the number of polling stations, recruitment and training of electoral officers, replacement of exited staff, upgrade of data center, and the purchase of ICT equipment.

The EC proposed a budgetary request of GH¢932.03 million for the 2024 financial year to meet these critical needs. However, the Finance Ministry allocated only GH¢786.9 million, resulting in a budget shortfall of GH¢140.7 million.

The Special Budget Committee insisted on addressing this shortfall to ensure the effective implementation of the EC’s planned programs and activities.

“Again, the Commission further informed that the shortfall would compel the Commission to reduce its critical activities necessary for a successful conduct of the 2024 general elections and therefore, appeals to the Committee to intervene to ensure that the proposed budgetary amount is approved and released on time to enable the Commission to undertake these planned programmes as scheduled,” Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.

“The Committee is of the view that the activities of the Electoral Commission are time-bound and extremely critical to the stability of the country and therefore, any impediment in the way of the Commission may be costly to the country.”

Mrs. Patricia Appiagyei, Member of the Special Budget Committee and Chairperson of Parliament’s Committee on Government Assurance, who seconded the Motion, highlighted an issue related to the use of indelible ink during the December 19th, 2023, District Level Elections.

“Mr Speaker, we don’t know whether it is because of the harmattan or any other thing. We also noted, as we have rightly shown concern to the Commissioner or the Chair of the Electoral Commission, that the ink which we have been told that it was produced in Ghana is one that can easily be rubbed of.

“We were rightly informed that the ink is never produced in Ghana, and at the same time we were also educated that what they have done is to even get rid of the indelible ink, currently nobody uses the indelible ink, and it was rightly proven yesterday. But we have shown serious concern about the use of that indelible ink.”

Mrs. Appiagyei emphasized the importance of urging the Ministry of Finance to ensure that the Electoral Commission (EC) is adequately equipped to organize credible elections in 2024. Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, an MP for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), reiterated the significance of maintaining the use of indelible ink for marking voters who have exercised their franchise.

Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, Deputy Minority Whip and NDC MP for Banda, called on the House to ensure timely releases of budgetary allocations to the EC by the Finance Ministry. Mr. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Majority Chief Whip and NPP MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, also stressed the need for collaborative efforts to ensure that sufficient funds are made available to the electoral body to fulfill its mandate.

Sinohydro Corporation road project: Portions of road destroyed one year after inauguration

A report by JoyNews has highlighted the deplorable state of some roads in the country constructed as part of the Sinohydro Corporation road project.

It’s just been a year since these roads were inaugurated for use, but they are also being filled with potholes, among others.

The asphalted road on Papasi Junction, inaugurated on September 8, 2022, has seen an anomaly. As a result, motorists now drive on the shoulder of the road in order not to damage their vehicles.

For some Ghanaians, they believe the contractors did shoddy work and must be held accountable.

The government entered into a $2 billion Master Project Support Agreement (MPSA) with the Chinese state-run, Sinohydro Corporation Limited in September 2018.

Under the deal, Sinohydro, a hydropower engineering and construction firm, will finance and execute the construction of infrastructural projects across the length and breadth of Ghana in exchange to have access to sites to mine bauxite.

  • ‘Repatriated’ Shalimar Abbiusi obtained her student permit by fraudulent misrepresentation – GIS

‘Repatriated’ Shalimar Abbiusi obtained her student permit by fraudulent misrepresentation – GIS

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has provided an explanation for the arrest and subsequent repatriation of Ms. Shalimar Abbuisi, a Belgian national and spokesperson for The New Force, a new political group in Ghana.

According to GIS, the Comptroller-General revoked Ms. Abbuisi’s residence permit in accordance with Section 20 (2)(a) of the Immigration Act, 2000, Act 573.

The GIS in a press statement noted that she had obtained her student permit by “fraudulent misrepresentation”, and that “Per the law, Ms Shalimar Abbiusi could not remain in Ghana, and the Comptroller-General ordered her removal from the country.”

The New Force spokesperson was repatriated on December 19, 2023 aboard Air Brussels Flt. No. SN 319 back to her home country.”

This followed her re-arrest on December 19, after the Ghana Immigration Service revoked her permit.

The Kaneshie District Court discharged the Belgian national on Tuesday as state prosecutors decided to drop the charge related to obtaining a student permit under false declaration.

Shalimar, as per the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), had stated in her documents that she was a student of the Ghana Christian University College. However, upon investigation, this claim was found to be false.

Despite being relieved when the charges were dropped, Shalimar’s freedom was short-lived as she was re-arrested. The state had made travel arrangements, giving her 24 hours to leave the country.

In response, lead counsel for Shalimar Abbiusi, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has described as disgraceful the manner in which his client was forced to leave the country following a legal case.

Mr Francis-Xavier Sosu, while engaging the media said this act contravenes her fundamental human rights, as she should have been allowed to choose her destination since she was not deported.

“I picked information that sometime last night, she was being escorted to board the Brussels Airline to Belgium. But clearly, this is so shameful and disgraceful.

“Because she was not deported from Ghana and there was no deportation order by the Minister but an Executive Instrument. So holding her and even denying her access to her lawyers and even her Family and escorting her with men in uniform was a violation. When you revoked the person’s visa and said that leave our jurisdiction within 24 hours, she could move from Ghana to Togo. She has the Liberty to move anywhere else that she can go,” he said.

Manasseh provides more evidence in response to GRA’s rebuttal of ‘The GHC3 Billion Lie’ exposé”

The Founding Editor-In-Chief of the Fourth Estate, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has raised questions about the value additions provided by Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited (SML) to the upstream petroleum and gold production sectors.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in a statement that the consolidated contract gives SML more than $100 million a year noting that “By implication, if there is no value addition, SML is not paid.”

However, Manasseh Azure Awuni countered this claim, asserting that, based on the contract extended by the Finance Ministry, SML is not remunerated for value addition.

He clarified that SML is expected to be paid as long as production occurs, irrespective of any value addition to the petroleum upstream and gold sectors.

In a Twitter post on December 20, Manasseh wrote: “The GRA has made a major false claim in its press statement. On the consolidated contract that gives SML more than 100 Million US Dollars a year, the GRA said: “By implication, if there is no value addition, SML is not paid.” In the contract, however, SML is not expected to add value to the upstream and gold sectors. It will be paid as long as production takes place, as evidenced in the attached contracts. SML will receive 0.75$ PER BARREL of the 160,000 barrels of oil Ghana produces a day. SML will also receive 0.75% of the total gold production.”

The journalist further noted that using 2022 gold production figures, SML will be making about $50 million a year from the gold production alone.

“The contract says the company should monitor, so what value addition is the GRA talking about?” he further quizzed.

Meanwhile, GRA has refuted the claim that a 10-year contract has been awarded to SML. The GRA says the Finance Ministry signed a 5-year contract.

In response, Manasseh said “Granted that this is true, SML will still be making more than $100 Million a year for the next 5 years, if you add its earnings in the downstream sector.”

He added that the only time SML will not make money is when Ghana stops the production of oil or gold.

You cannot close polls at 3pm when you fail to start voting process on time – Majority leader tells EC

Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to reconsider its proposed plan to close polls at 3 pm instead of 5 pm during the 2024 general elections.

The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs expressed concern that such a decision could potentially disenfranchise eligible voters.

Speaking during the budget approval debate for the EC on Wednesday, December 20, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu underscored the importance of maintaining the 5 pm voting schedule.

He referenced the recent district assembly elections, revealing that upon his arrival at the polling station, the voting materials had not yet arrived.

“The attempt to reduce voting time from 5 pm to 3 pm, we should interrogate it. I believe it is too early for the EC to do it. [On Tuesday] when I went to vote, the materials had not been assembled yet even though I got there at 8:15, I had to stay until 9:20 to start voting, already two hours wasted.”

The Electoral Commission (EC) has defended its decision to change the closing time of voting from 5:00 pm to 3:00 pm during the 2024 general elections.

EC Chairperson Jean Mensa highlighted that this adjustment is intended to facilitate the transparent and orderly collation of votes by electoral officers in broad daylight.

They tried 5 times to kill Special Prosecutor – A Plus

Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as A Plus, has revealed that there have been about five assassination attempts on the life of Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng.

He made this revelation in a Facebook post while defending the Special Prosecutor’s plea for armored vehicles, as outlined in a 2021 application for vehicle clearance.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), led by Mr. Kissi Adjabeng, faced public criticism after the document, requesting four armored-plated vehicles and 12 soft or light-body vehicles, amounting to GH¢29,952,000, surfaced online.

Despite the backlash, A Plus asserted that armored vehicles are crucial for the safety of the Special Prosecutor, who has faced multiple assassination attempts.

“You want to assassinate someone. You have made five attempts on his life this year alone, but you are angry he has requested bulletproof cars which is a requirement under the law that set up his office.

“Did the special prosecutor set up the OSP? Should I release the photos of all the attempts or you’ll shut up over there and allow the man to do his job? AfCFTA is a real game-changer, take advantage and expand – Akufo-Addo to businesses

The government is actively promoting the expansion of local businesses through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a means to achieve accelerated economic growth.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the vast opportunities provided by the AfCFTA should be harnessed to enhance the global competitiveness of local businesses.

“It is a real game-changer, and once fully realised, we can potentially increase on an annual basis, according to the Economic Commission for Africa, intra-Africa trade increase by some US$35 billion and reduce external imports by some US$10 billion,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo addressed the 31st and 32nd President’s National Awards for Export Achievement in Accra. The event, organized jointly by the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) and Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), aimed to acknowledge the contributions of exporters in the non-traditional sector to the economic prosperity of the country.

The President emphasized his administration’s commitment to supporting GEPA and GFZA, recognizing their strategic importance in sustaining the development and growth of Ghana’s non-traditional export sector.

“We also assure you that your governing laws are being reviewed to position you better to facilitate, develop and promote Ghana’s non-traditional exports,” he said.

“Without a doubt, your businesses have contributed significantly to the growth of the Ghanaian economy – the creation of jobs, and have had positive effects on our balance of payment,” he emphasised.

The President said, that despite the global economic downturn, the local businesses had demonstrated resilience in their operations for survival.

“I dare say that a lot of Ghanaian businesses have been severely hit, some to the extent of folding up business operations.

“The last three years have been challenging, and the Government has been doing its utmost to help ensure a reversal of our fortunes,” he stated.

By dint of hard work and tenacity of purpose, President Nana Akufo-Addo explained that: “We have turned the corner with all macro-economic indices – the rate of inflation, exchange rate stability or economic growth rate – all now pointing to the right direction.”

Dr. Afua Asabea Asare, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GEPA, affirmed the Authority’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence within the export community. • There’s a movement to block Black Sherif in Nigeria – Adesope Olajide

There’s a movement to block Black Sherif in Nigeria – Adesope Olajide

Adesope Olajide, a Nigerian media personality based in the UK, has stated that Black Sherif is at risk of losing support in the Nigerian music market due to his endorsement of the #PlayGhana initiative.

Olajide shared his views on the situation during an appearance on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM.

According to Olajide, some Nigerian bloggers are displeased with Black Sherif’s support for the initiative, which advocates for the consistent promotion of Ghanaian music in the country. The media personality highlighted the concerns raised by these bloggers in response to Black Sherif’s stance.

“You know, this is not a blame game. We are not blaming DJs. We are not blaming artistes. We are not blaming consumers. It’s a step in the right direction for us all, our music and our culture. So play Ghana. Blessings.”

Adesope Olajide, also known as Shopsydoo, noted that despite Black Sherif’s well-intentioned remarks supporting the #PlayGhana initiative, blogs might target the artist rather than established figures like Reggie Rockstone or Samini.

“Do you think you can say anything to Reggie Rockstone or Samini? No. They will go for the baby who really has just started his career, he is just building relationships, and they can tell that he is still wet behind the ears. Let’s target this one, he won’t be able to fight back’,” Adesope stated.

“So of course they will attack the popular person currently in that market, he didn’t say anything wrong,” the media personality noted.

For Adesope Olajide, it is “impossible” to blacklist Black Sherif since he is loved in Nigeria than some artists from the country.

Adesope also defended the call for prioritizing Ghanaian music, especially during holidays when diasporas flock to the country.

He argued that promoting local content is crucial to shaping the perception of Ghanaian music abroad, as visitors take home what they hear, influencing the global reception of the country’s music scene.

“When we come here we take home whatever we hear. If local content is not promoted, then whatever we hear is what we are going to take to the UK and America,” he stated.

  • If we need to sack Houghton to win 2023 AFCON, so be it – Annoh Dompreh

If we need to sack Houghton to win 2023 AFCON, so be it – Annoh Dompreh

Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Frank Annoh Dompreh, has suggested that Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton should be fired if necessary for Ghana to secure victory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Hughton, the former Brighton manager, has faced criticism since taking over in March, with the team’s performance and results falling short of expectations.

Speaking in parliament, the Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP urged the Sports Minister to take all necessary measures to prevent the Black Stars from bringing shame to the country during the upcoming tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

“Minister, you’ll agree with me that these days our Black Stars is becoming a pale shadow of itself,” Dompreh said.

“As we are heading towards another African tournament, we urge you to do everything and anything, including the changing of our national coach, if need be.

“We can’t just go there and be part of the number of teams. We’ve always said that we are four-time champions; this thing is becoming old-time glory.

“We want to do something for ourselves, and minister, I know you can do it. Please help, and let’s get our Black Stars in good shape.”

Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has unveiled a 55-man provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the list on December 20, just 24 days before the tournament kicks off.

  • Tema’s Hip-Hop Exodus: What happened to the Trailblazers?

Tema’s Hip-Hop Exodus: What happened to the Trailblazers?

In the vibrant tapestry of Ghana’s music scene, a perplexing narrative transcends the beats and rhymes, echoing the untold stories of exceptionally talented rappers who, despite their undeniable prowess, find themselves tethered to the sidelines of the industry.

As the spotlight gleams on a select few, the question looms large: what happened to some of the country’s most talented rappers? Why have they struggled to ascend the summit of their musical careers?

Over a decade ago, an army of rappers emerged from faraway Tema. They graced the Ghana music scene with their lyrical dexterity in mainly the Akan language and Pidgin (broken English). Even with the likes of Okyeame Kwame, Asem, OJ Blakk, Flowking Stone, Cabum, Kwaw Kese, Edem, et al. reigning at this time, one thing was sure: the entry of the boys from Tema was well-noticed among the group of people now known as Gen Z.

Circa 2010, this golden generation of Tema rappers came together for a Christmas rap carol – ‘Come Wine,’ a song that saw several of them take turns to flex their rap muscles on a Possigee beat and usher listeners into the festive celebration. D-Cryme, Sarkodie, Yaa Pono, Chris Waddle, Yaw Siki, Pope Skinny, Opanka, Keche, Stay Jay, Danso Abeam, and Macho Rapper were the most notable on that song.

Sarkodie has since then risen to even greater heights and is inspiring a new crop of artists working hard to make a name for themselves and surviving the muddy waters of Ghana’s music scene. Since the rise of the Tema music scene, he has become the most decorated rapper in Africa, winning multiple international and local awards and recording numerous hit songs. He also hosts one of the biggest Christmas Day concerts in Ghana.

For many of the rest, it seems to be a story of what could have been. Of course, a group like Keche must be commended for still being in the game in 2023. Also, Yaw Siki has retired from the music scene after surviving what could have been a fatal accident several years ago.

Stay Jay’s career was promising. Unfortunately, after about six hit songs, one of which can be considered to have introduced a new derogatory local term for women deemed promiscuous (Shashee), little has been heard of him.

Opanka was that guy! He initially made a significant impact by entering the mainstream music industry with a freestyle on Bradez’s Simple instrumental. His success translated into hits, show opportunities, and the promise of a bright future.

However, despite these early achievements, Opanka faced challenges fully capitalizing on his potential. While he seemed poised to become a distinguished emcee, his narrative parallels those shared by many others in the music industry, as highlighted in the song “Come Wine.” Some of his fans speculated that comparisons with Sarkodie might have affected his trajectory during that period.

D Cryme transitioned from the role of a hype man for Sarkodie to establishing his own identity in the music industry, marked by creating several hit songs. Despite an initially promising trajectory, he faced setbacks in his career. The introduction of Twi Pop, a fusion of Twi, Fante, and Pidgin with hip-hop elements, marked a significant moment in his career. His track “Kill Me Shy” from 13 years ago is still considered one of the biggest songs in his repertoire. However, despite these accomplishments, D Cryme’s career encountered challenges that hindered its continuous ascent.

Yaa Pono once held the title of the street king in Tema. His endearing presence stemmed from a blend of his humorous rap style and lively stage performances, making him a beloved figure among his fans. However, the current whereabouts or circumstances surrounding his career are shrouded in mystery.

There is no doubt that these men were talented. But the question remains: Why have they struggled to ascend the summit of their musical careers?

A simple answer may be that they did not work hard enough. But that answer is very insufficient and overly simplistic.

As influential figures in the music industry increasingly intentionally showcase the country through music, a necessity arises to thoroughly examine these scenarios and assist budding talents. Is the challenge rooted in a deficiency of strategic planning, support systems, or infrastructure? Alternatively, do artists find contentment with their accomplishments in relatively brief careers?

The resurgence of Ghana’s music scene is currently centered in Kumasi, marked by the rise of the widely used term ‘Kumerica.’ The Asakaa Boys have embarked on a successful tour, achieving chart-topping success, and are gearing up for their inaugural concert in Kumasi. Figures like Yaw TOG, Kofi Jamar, Y-Pee, and Oseikrom Sikanii, among others, are thriving in their endeavors, showcasing exceptional talent from the Golden City.

Hopefully, in 2033, this question won’t be asked within the context of the rising rappers from Kumasi.

  • Respect your DJs and they will do anything for you! – Nigerian media personality ‘advises’ artistes

Respect your DJs and they will do anything for you! – Nigerian media personality ‘advises’ artistes

Nigerian media personality Adesope Olajide has urged artistes across the world to give DJs the recognition they duly deserve.

According to him, he has observed a stale relationship between musicians and disc jockeys, and this will, in the long run, affect the entertainment industry.

He noted that Niergian artiste Davido goes out of his way to have a cordial relationship with DJs whenever he attends an event where his music is being played.

“We will see Davido walk across the room to go and say hi toy he DJ there. What do you think the DJ is going to do for the next hour. If you don’t like Davido, just go somewhere else because the DJ is going to focus on that person, acknowledgement,” he said.

Adesope noted that DJs and artistes stand a chance to enhance their social capital should the needed recognition be given.

“It is not about money. Forget that. That is what the artiste has to start learning. It is not a fight with the DJs. It is time to recognize them.”

He recounted an experience where an artiste failed to acknowledge a DJ in London who had played his music for close to 45 minutes at an event.

I know a DJ in London who personally told me that he stopped playing the music of a popular musician because the guy walked into the room, they played his music for a couple of times, he stayed on his phone throughout and after about 45 minutes, walked out without saying hello.

In a related event, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey, has entreated Ghanaian musicians to build a good relationship with DJs, since they play a crucial role in their journey to stardom by making their songs popular by playing it always.

The minister warned that a lack of respect or strained relations with DJs could jeopardise artistes chances of making it big in the competitive music industry.

“To the DJs, I know some of your challenges…you say the artistes don’t respect you. .you make them stars and they ignore you afterwards. For the sake of Ghana, please let sleeping dogs lie”

Mr Okraku Mantey also called on all stakeholders in the music industry to unite in promoting the #playghana initiative.

Forcing New Force spokesperson to leave Ghana “shameful and disgraceful” – Francis-Xavier

Lead counsel for the spokeswoman for the New Force political movement, Shalimar Abbiusi, has described as disgraceful the manner in which his client was forced to leave the country following a legal case.

Mr Francis-Xavier Sosu, while engaging Citinews noted that information reaching him indicates that Shalimar was escorted to board the Brussels Airline to Belgium on Tuesday evening, December 19.

According to him, this act contravenes her fundamental human rights, as she should have been allowed to choose her destination since she was not deported.

Kasoa electoral areas turns chaotic as gunshots fired during recount request by NDC members

Gunshots were fired, and one person was rendered unconscious during an assault that ensued after NDC members requested a recount in the Kasoa Kpomotey and Kasoa Old Times electoral areas.

Witnesses reported that NDC members were protesting against a perceived phantom polling station at the Kasoa ICGC polling center.

According to some NDC members, there were supposed to be four assembly members and four unit committee members, totaling eight ballot boxes, but after the election, there were five ballot boxes designated for assembly members.

This led to demands for a recount, resulting in a physical altercation between NDC and NPP members.

Imoro Ibrahim said “one individual was knocked unconscious and promptly taken to the Kasoa Polyclinic”.

Following the altercation, another group arrived and began firing live bullets and spraying pepper spray.

The situation escalated to the Kasoa Divisional Police Command, where NDC Constituency Executives and their supporters surrounded the police command, demanding a recount of the results from the Kasoa Old Timers electoral area.

“Old Timers as we are standing here as NDC members, we don’t have an assembly man, we are waiting for the authorities and the EC for the final verdict, so no one should hold himself as an assembly man”.

In the wake of the violent incident, NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East Constituency, Phillis Naa Koryo, is urging NDC members to accept the results from the Kasoa Old Timers electoral area.

Communication dept. needed to quash corruption tag on Judiciary – Justice Cofie

Supreme Court nominee Justice Anthony Henry Cofie has urged the implementation of a robust Public Relations Unit within the Judiciary to counteract the perception of corruption.

During his session before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, December 20, Justice Cofie stressed the importance of effective communication in rebuilding public trust.

He stated that without a robust Public Relations Unit, tackling misconceptions about corruption would be difficult.

Justice Kwofie advocated for a strong public relations department to address public concerns and improve transparency.

“The perception about corruption is a mind issue. And perceptions are difficult to deal with. There have been several seminars not by the association but by the judiciary on corruption, on ethics and as I said we also have a complaint unit…Almost every year we do it.

“The perceptions of corruption, some of them are unfounded. Somebody goes to court, he loses a case, and there is corruption. Somebody goes to court, he misconducts himself, there is an issue, there is corruption. Unfortunately, we as judges cannot sit and make press conferences and say that this is this.”

“Communication in this age is extremely important…probably we need to look at our communication department. It is something I have personally been advocating for that we need a very strong communications or public relations department,” he said.

Ama, who is now a school dropout, indicated that she was in a romantic relationship with the absconded man. She said he failed to take responsibility and denied the baby.

“He was my only boyfriend. He broke my virginity. I was with him only. But when I became pregnant, he said it wasn’t him. My grandma spoke to him but he insisted it was not him. We took him to the Assembly but he insisted it wasn’t his.”

Ama’s grandmother had to step in and take care of her grandchild while pregnant.

The issue has garnered several reactions from X users. Some have commiserated with Ama, but others such as social media influencer, Bongo Ideas, have blamed Ama for her ordeal.

“If she is old enough to open her legs, then she’s old enough to bear the consequences. Let’s allow people to take responsibility for their actions,” @BongoIdeas wrote.

But this assertion has been shot down by many who say there is no justification for a defilement case, whether the minor agreed or not to the sexual act.

“People saying did ama agreed den things Dey funny me ooo, how would u sleep with a minor in the first place ? Chale something’s Dey aaaa we shouldn’t take play,” @fawogyimiiko wrote.

Criminal Offences Act, 1960 defines defilement in Section 101(2) of Act 29 as natural or unnatural carnal knowledge of a child under sixteen years of age with or without the child’s consent.

According to section 14(a) of Act 29, consent for carnal knowledge of a child under sixteen years is void – with punishment of not less than seven years and not more than twenty five years in prison.

This means that although, morally Ama might be questioned on her decision, legally she has no responsibility but rather, the adult would be held accountable for engaging in an unlawful act by being in a romantic relationship with a minor.

Judiciary accused of being corrupt due to misunderstanding – Justice Cofie

Justice of the Appeals Court, Anthony Henry Cofie, has refuted claims of corruption within the judiciary, stating that certain perceptions of corruption associated with the judiciary are unfounded.

Speaking during his appearance before the vetting committee in parliament, Justice Cofie highlighted the challenge of judges not being able to hold press conferences to clarify their positions.

He acknowledged that addressing the perception of corruption is complex, particularly because discussions around judges can be subjective.

Justice Cofie shared insights into the efforts made within the judiciary, stating that there is an association of judges that conducts regular seminars on corruption and ethics for its members. He explained that judges receive training on ethical matters and corruption prevention almost every year.

Nominated by President Akufo-Addo, Justice Cofie has been put forward for consideration to join the Supreme Court.

Political judges and judgments do not exist – Justice Cofie

Justice of the Appeals Court, Anthony Henry Cofie, has dismissed claims of political bias within the judiciary, stating that there are no politically affiliated judges in the country.

He made these remarks during his appearance before the vetting committee in parliament on Wednesday, December 20.

Addressing concerns about perceptions of political influence on judicial decisions, especially accusations that the current government, led by President Akufo-Addo, is appointing judges with affiliations to the governing party, Justice Cofie emphatically rejected such claims. Critics have referred to the bench and its rulings as “Unanimous FC.”

Justice Cofie firmly countered these assertions during the vetting session, asserting that there are no political judges, and consequently, there are no politically motivated judgments within the judiciary. He dispelled any notion that political considerations play a role in the decisions rendered by the judiciary.

Nominated by President Akufo-Addo, Justice Cofie, along with two others, is being considered for appointment to the Supreme Court.

SML deal saved Ghana GHC3bn – GRA reacts to Fourth Estate documentary

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has refuted the claims made by ‘The Fourth Estate’ that it granted a ‘questionable’ contract to Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited (SML) for monitoring Upstream Petroleum Production and auditing the value chain of Minerals and Metals Resources.

In an official statement, the authority clarified that, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, it entered into a consolidated contract with SML to monitor and audit the Downstream Petroleum Sector in 2019, Upstream Petroleum Production in 2023, and the Minerals and Metals Resources Value Chain in 2023.

Contrary to the ten years mentioned by ‘The Fourth Estate,’ the GRA emphasized that the contract is designed to operate for five years.

“The new and consolidated contract which is for a term of five years and not ten years as alleged by the publication and was agreed upon based on the performance of SML in monitoring the downstream petroleum sector and the provision of instant reconciliation of real-time data in the sector”, the statement signed by the Communication And Public Affairs Department of the GRA said.

Describing the Performance of the Downstream Petroleum sector under the Assurance Contract, the GRA noted that prior to engaging SML, the authority relied on a manual system for measuring fuel in depots.

The GRA highlighted that using dipsticks for measurement was outdated and presented a risk to officers who had to climb a ladder to measure the fuel in the tankers.

“It was inefficient and prone to revenue leakages. Currently, oil deposited by the Bulk-Oil Distribution Companies in the depots is measured by SML with the aid of sensors installed on the depots (Red flow metres). During offloading from the depots, SML again measures all the various liftings of the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs)”.

The GRA emphasized that all information is captured and reconciled with data from the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) through the GRA petroleum unit.

The statement clarified that if there are discrepancies, Customs informs the Oil Marketing Companies (OMC) to enter a post-entry to correct any differences.

It highlighted that in the petroleum sector, SML provides additional independent data, apart from the Customs ICUMS data, capable of validating anomalies in quantities imported, discharged, and accounted for by way of taxes.

The GRA further explained that the revenue assurance exercises conducted by EY Ghana and later by the Revenue Assurance and Compliance Enforcement (RACE) of the Ministry of Finance confirmed systemic deficiencies in the accounting and collection of petroleum taxes between 2015 and 2020.

New Force spokesperson left Ghana via KIA on Tuesday evening – Report

Spokesperson for the New Force, Shalimar Abbiusi, who was engaged in a legal battle with the state, boarded a Brussels flight that took off from Kotoka International Airport at 10 PM on Tuesday, according to sources.

Shalimar’s lawyer, Francis Xavier, expressed displeasure with the situation, stating that the state had violated her fundamental human rights. He vowed to fight for justice and indicated that legal processes initiated at the Human Rights Court would still be pursued.

Blackpool took the lead in the 18th minute when Owen Dale charged down a loose ball, won a 50-50 challenge with keeper Luke Daniels, and tapped into an empty net.

Despite missed chances by Dom Thompson and Matty Virtue in the first half, Blackpool maintained their dominance.

In the second half, Kyle Joseph had an opportunity to extend the lead, but Forest Green made a triple substitution, including player-coach Troy Deeney, to find a route back into the game. However, Blackpool continued to control the match, and Jordan Gabriel scored a second 15 minutes from time.

Marvin Ekpiteta sealed the victory by heading Karamoko Dembele’s free-kick into the net, completing a successful night for Blackpool.

  • Guilty or not!: What the law says about minor-consent in a case of defilement

Guilty or not!: What the law says about minor-consent in a case of defilement

How abreast are you of Ghana’s laws to enable you to walk out of a ‘legal trap’ that could land you in prison for seven to at most 25 years?

As an adult, much responsibility is expected of you when dealing with a minor, and the least act deemed unlawful could land one in trouble.

Defilement is one of the many cases that has had many argue in the context of morality and expect the law to go in their favour. But the law is precise on what it calls defilement.

The Criminal Offences Act, 1960 defines defilement in Section 101(2) of Act 29 as natural or unnatural carnal knowledge of a child under sixteen years of age with or without the child’s consent.

Why the need for this write-up on defilement? A viral video on X, formerly Twitter, has brought to light a case of defilement involving a Basic 6 pupil.

Ama, a 14-year-old girl, has been abandoned by a 30-year-old man who got her pregnant. The teen, in a video shared by X user, @EvianaGh, currently has a baby who is a month old.

No matter how one argues on moral grounds and blames Ama for willingly accepting a proposal from a 30-year-old man, the teen cannot be held legally responsible for her actions as she is viewed as a citizen unable to make sound judgement.

According to section 14(a) of Act 29, consent for carnal knowledge of a child under sixteen years is void – with punishment of not less than seven years and not more than twenty-five years in prison.

This means that although morally Ama might be questioned about her decision, legally she has no responsibility, but rather, the adult would be held accountable for engaging in an unlawful act by being in a romantic relationship with a minor.

Ghana doesn’t require a law to check contempt of court – Justice Kwofie

One of the judges nominated by President Akufo-Addo for a position on the Supreme Court bench, Justice of the Appeals Court Anthony Henry Cofie, has expressed his disagreement with the proposal to legislate a law regulating contempt of court.

The disagreement arose during a discussion initiated by Francis Xavier Sosu, the Member of Parliament for Madina, who highlighted the necessity of regulating how judges handle contempt cases, emphasizing its potential impact on free expression.

Speaking before the Appointments Committee on Wednesday, December 20, Justice Cofie emphasized that while contempt cases may not be frequent, the power to address them is a crucial tool that empowers judges to counter individuals seeking to abuse and threaten the judiciary.

“I don’t think that there should be a law as we have now in the UK on contempt. In all honesty, how many contempt cases come before the court across the country in a year? they are very few. For the number of years that I have sat as a judge, I don’t even know the number of times I have convicted somebody of contempt.”

Furthermore, Justice Cofie cautioned individuals to exercise circumspection and control their emotions when discussing matters related to the judiciary to avoid potential legal consequences.

President Akufo-Addo nominated three Court of Appeal Justices to fill vacancies on the Supreme Court bench on November 10. The nominees include Justice Henry Anthony Cofie, Justice Yaw Asare Darko, and Justice Richard Agyei Frimpong.

COCOBOD signs $800m syndicated loan with banks, to draw down $600m this week – Report

Ghana’s Cocoa Marketing Board (COCOBOD) has finalized an $800 million syndicated loan with banks, and it anticipates accessing the initial $600 million as early as this week, according to the deputy chief executive officer, per reports from Reuters.

The annual syndicated loan is a crucial funding source for Ghana, the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, supporting bean purchases from farmers.

Delays in reaching this year’s agreement were attributed to Ghana’s severe economic crisis and efforts to restructure its bilateral and commercial debts.

“I joined COCOBOD in 2018 and this is the hardest transaction we have had,” COCOBOD Deputy CEO Ray Ankrah told Reuters.

“It’s been signed and we are working on the drawdown. We’re drawing down $600 million by the end of this week and we expect to draw down the $200 (million) in the middle to the end of January,” he said, adding that the terms of the loan had not changed from those presented to parliament last month.

In November, Ghana’s parliament approved the transaction, allowing the Cocoa Marketing Board (COCOBOD) to finalize paperwork with participating banks for an $800 million syndicated loan.

The terms include an interest rate of nearly 8%, comprising the one-month Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) at approximately 5.3% and a margin of 2.65%.

The drawdown of the initial $600 million this week is expected to bolster Ghana’s reserves, potentially supporting the local cedi by reducing demand for dollars amid slow progress in restructuring bilateral debt.

Ghana and Ivory Coast are anticipating smaller cocoa crops due to adverse weather conditions, with COCOBOD officially forecasting about 800,000 tons for the 2023/24 season.

However, industry sources estimate Ghana’s harvest will be closer to 600,000 tons. The $800 million loan is considered one of the lowest in a decade, and COCOBOD plans to capitalize on record-high global cocoa prices by selling part of the country’s crop on the spot market.

Video: EC officer caught stealing for NPP Assembly aspirant in Suhum district-level election

A video making rounds on social media has highlighted electoral malpractice in the district-level elections held on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.

Per reports, an Electoral Commission officer attempted to rig the Suhum district-level elections in favour of one, Nartey Anomah, who is allegedly affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The female officer’s actions were to go against the National Democratic Congress’ Saddick Adams.

In the video shared by X user, @MichaelFianyo1, a caution was sent to EC officials who intend to exhibit such alleged acts in the 2024 general elections.

“This EC woman was caught red handed stealing for an NPP assembly aspirant in Nartey Anomah electoral area in Suhum to change figures against the NDC Saddick Adams. We are sending a strong warning to all EC officials against 2024 we are more than vigilant and we won’t spare,” the caption of the video read.

The video also revealed the arrest of the EC official by officers of the Ghana Police Service.

Blues book place in Carabao Cup semis win after Newcastle victory

Mykhailo Mudryk and Djordje Petrovic emerged as the heroes for Chelsea, propelling the team to the Carabao Cup semi-finals in a match filled with late drama at the Bridge.

In the second minute of stoppage time, Mudryk equalized Callum Wilson’s opener, forcing the tie into penalties. Kieran Trippier’s miss had already given Chelsea an advantage, and Petrovic’s exceptional save against Matt Ritchie secured the victory, with Chelsea flawlessly converting all their penalties.

The outcome was well-deserved for Chelsea, dominating the game despite falling behind when Wilson capitalized on defensive errors to put Newcastle ahead in the 16th minute. Before the break, Conor Gallagher had hit the crossbar, and Raheem Sterling had two close chances to level the score.

The trend continued in the second half, with Nicolas Jackson missing a shot and Sterling testing Martin Dubravka with a strong attempt.

Debutant Christopher Nkunku came on, but it was another substitute, Mudryk, who sent the match to penalties in stoppage time. Mudryk capitalized on a Kieran Trippier mistake with composure and precision.

As Mudryk converted the fourth spot-kick for Chelsea, Ritchie needed to score, but Petrovic, making his third Chelsea appearance, had different plans.

Chelsea will discover their semi-final opponents after the Liverpool vs. West Ham match tomorrow evening. Middlesbrough and Fulham also advanced tonight.

Quota system in nursing training institution will be abolished – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has indicated that the next NDC-led government plans to abolish the quota system for enrolling student nurses into Nursing Training Colleges in the country.

Instead, the government intends to invest in the construction of more health facilities, including CHPS Compounds, new Polyclinics, Health Centres, and Hospitals. This strategic move aims to create additional job opportunities for nurses upon the completion of their courses.

The announcement was made during Former President Mahama’s address to student nurses at the Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Esiama, Ellembelle District, Western Region. This engagement was part of a two-day Building Ghana Tour, seeking input from stakeholders to be incorporated into the NDC’s new manifesto.

The students who received President Mahama, hoisted placards such as, “Mahama, You Deserve Our Votes In 2024”, “The Youth of Ghana Support The-24-Hour Economy”, “We Are Sorry for Choosing Allowances over Hospitals”, “Graduate Nurses Are Crying”, “Our Entire Educational System Is In Comatose” and “JM, We Love You”.

Former President John Dramani Mahama highlighted that the decision by the previous NDC government to replace training allowances with the Students Loan Scheme was made to address challenges in the health sector. He mentioned that second-year student nurses have not received their allowances and appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia to promptly disburse the allowances.

Mahama expressed concern about the increasing brain drain in the health sector due to unemployment and pledged to create more jobs to alleviate the issue.

During his visit to the Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Esiama, he directed the MP for Ellembelle to provide a new water pump for the college and promised to address challenges facing the institution.

The MP for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, assured that he would engage with student nurses to address their concerns.

The college’s Principal, Mrs. Cecilia Boame, emphasized the need for a new 60-seater bus to transport students for clinical services, citing the inadequacy of the current bus donated by the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

The SRC President of the college, Ms. Humaizer Abubakar, commended former President Mahama for his past interventions in the health sector and expressed optimism about his commitment to spearheading Ghana’s development if elected again.

  • Jean Mensa’s incompetence has been discovered in problematic district-level elections – NDC

Jean Mensa’s incompetence has been discovered in problematic district-level elections – NDC

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has ascribed the challenges that disrupted Tuesday’s assembly and unit committee elections in various voting centers across the country to what he perceives as the poor leadership skills of Ghana’s Electoral Commissioner.

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Gbande highlighted the NDC’s meticulous monitoring of the election processes. He emphasized the party’s dedication to ensuring that the electoral issues encountered during the recent polls are not repeated in the upcoming general elections in 2024.

“We are very interested, and we have been very much interested in the activities of this election because it has a bearing on the next elections that will be organized. So, we followed keenly as far as the district assembly elections are concerned.”

“The situation that we find ourselves in as a nation is largely because we have an electoral commissioner who does not believe in consensus building and does not want to learn. We would have avoided this situation if she had engaged stakeholders and had been willing to do what was right.”

Mustapha Gbande added that unless the Electoral Commissioner reforms her leadership skills, the 2024 elections may bring about negative consequences.

“What is more shocking is that six hours before the election, the commissioner did not envisage that inventory might not have reached the centres, and she did not even check to ensure that they were in order. This clearly tells us that we are dealing with Jean Mensa, who is largely incompetent and has demonstrated low experience in terms of elections management. It is dangerous going into 2024, particularly if the same personality is still going to be our electoral commissioner.”

The Electoral Commission (EC) has postponed the district-level elections in some electoral areas in the Ashanti and Eastern regions.

The elections were scheduled for Tuesday, December 19, but the EC said in a press statement that they have been moved to Thursday, December 21, 2023.

The EC cited “a number of technical challenges” as the reason for its decision. Lower Manya in the Eastern Region is among the affected areas.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused to residents of these electoral areas. We assure the residents of the affected areas that the district-level elections will be held on Thursday, the 21st of December, 2023,” the statement said.

In a related development, five individuals in the Duta Electoral Area of Ketu South have obtained an interim injunction, through an ex parte motion, to stop the EC from conducting the district-level elections in the area on December 19, 2023.

The order, which is valid for ten days, restrains the EC, its assigns, and workmen from any involvement in the elections.
