There was no technical issues, EC just blatantly disregarded the electoral processes –  Franklin Cudjoe

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has vehemently criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for dismissing recent lapses in the District Assembly elections as mere “technical challenges.”

He asserted that this explanation is disingenuous and points to deeper issues regarding the Commission’s planning and transparency.

Mr. Cudjoe emphasized that the EC’s earlier assurances of preparedness, provided weeks before the election, are contradictory to their claims of last-minute technical difficulties.

“This whole conversation about technical issues for the lapse the EC had cannot be true. You see if they are saying that maybe someone’s name was misspelled or something on the ballot, maybe yes. You can’t tell me that 12 hours or 6 hours to the elections, you didn’t know that you didn’t have all the accoutrement.

“These are not technical issues, they are just blatant disregard for the processes, it should have been ready two weeks earlier”.

In addition to his earlier criticism, Franklin Cudjoe further scrutinized the Electoral Commission (EC) for what he described as a “headstrong” approach and a lack of collaboration with stakeholders. He expressed the belief that excluding voices from various political parties and stakeholders contributes to avoidable problems, as evidenced by the recent District Assembly elections.

“The EC has been very headstrong…If they had internalized some of these issues, I don’t know why they would then wake up and tell us recently that in the main 2024 polls, they will close polls at 3 pm. What kind of signs went into that type of decision?

Speaking on the Big Issue, Mr Cudjoe added “Well, if you are going to have an election and this District level election is an example of some of the processes that were bungled, would you think that 3 pm should applied to every polling station? Would you want to do something like that”? he added.

  • Akufo-Addo will govern for another 4 years if you don’t vote for me – Mahama

Akufo-Addo will govern for another 4 years if you don’t vote for me – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed the view that voting for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2024 would essentially be an extension of President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

Mahama believes that if the NPP is retained, the country would face additional economic challenges and crises.

“Whoever votes the NPP in the next election is giving the President another four years”, he said.

During his address at Jukwa as part of the “Building Ghana Tour” in the Central Region, John Dramani Mahama voiced concerns about the country’s escalating debt, which has reached 600 billion cedis from 120 billion in 2016.

Mahama attributed the situation to President Akufo-Addo’s decision not to replace the Finance Minister, placing blame on this choice for the increasing debt stock.

“I can’t understand why the President has refused to remove his brother from the Finance Ministry. He has refused to listen to everyone. Eighty NPP MPs signed a petition for removal of the Finance Minister but the President refused”, he told the people.

The former President continued; “You can’t understand why the same person is being kept at the ministry. The President himself has lost hope. He told journalists the President after him should restore the economy in an interview on the economy.”

In the address, the former President who’s seeking a comeback described himself as akin to the Biblical saviour.

“The Bible talks about a saviour to redeem us. I am a Christian and believe Jesus Christ is the one. But before the coming of Jesus Christ, a saviour will be sent to redeem Ghana. That person will be experienced enough for the task. That individual is John Dramani Mahama and the NDC”, he said.

The first day of the “Building Ghana Tour” in the Central Region was climaxed with a community engagement at Jukwa in Heman Lower Denkyira.

Prior to that, the NDC flagbearer made stops at the Twifo Nursing Training College, Fante Nyankomase among other places to engage the people and traditional authorities.

Akufo-Addo has made Free SHS expensive although it is a good policy – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has recognized the merit of President Akufo-Addo’s flagship program, the Free Senior High School Programme (Free SHS).

During his visit to Agona Asafo in the Central Region as part of his Building Ghana Tour, Mahama expressed the view that the policy is a positive one. However, he indicated that there is a need for a review of the Free SHS program.

Mahama mentioned that if elected in the 2024 general elections, his administration would undertake a review of the Free SHS policy within the first 100 days of taking office.

“When we win power in 2024, we will have a forum to review the education sector, and we will invite teachers, parents, educationists and students and then we will review the free SHS policy.

“We will address issues that are not going well, like the feeding of students. The free SHS is a good policy but the government must put in place measures that will ensure that things are less expensive,” he said.

Mahama emphasised the need for a review, stating, “When you implement a policy, you must take stock after a while to see whether you are achieving your target.”

The NDC flagbearer underscored the objective of enhancing the implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

Emphasizing the need for improvement, the goal is to ensure that teachers, parents, and students can fully realize the benefits of the policy.

Illegal miners’ camp in Oda River Forest Reserve busted

The Forestry Commission conducted a raid on the camp of illegal miners who were operating during the night in the Oda River Forest Reserve in Bekwai, Ashanti Ashanti Region.

The operation resulted in the arrest of two Ghanaian illegal miners, Frank Oppong (39) and Akwasi Gyedu (42), who were found actively engaged in mining activities in compartment 30 of the reserve, near Bunso.

The illegal miners had set up lights to facilitate their operations within the forest reserve.

The Bekwai Rapid Response Team, which carried out the operation, set ablaze two excavators, two power plants, one motorbike and a tricycle used by the miners.

A ten-unit structure erected at the site was also pulled down.

The Oda River Forest Reserve has been a target of illegal mining activities in the past, leading to substantial damage to large portions of the forest.

The Bekwai District Manager of the Forestry Commission has informed the media that their organization is actively strategizing to safeguard what is left of the reserve.

  • Arsenal and Liverpool end game in stalemate

Arsenal and Liverpool end game in stalemate

Following a hard-fought draw against Premier League title rivals Arsenal, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp delivered unfortunate news for the team’s fans.

Gabriel had given the Gunners an early lead at Anfield, but Mohamed Salah equalized after 29 minutes, securing a point for Liverpool.

Despite the positive outcome, there was a downside as Kostas Tsimikas and Luis Diaz were both forced off due to injuries.

The draw allowed Liverpool to enter the Christmas period just one point behind the league leaders, but the setbacks in player injuries raised concerns for Klopp and the team.

Klopp, 56, said: “Tsimikas broke his collarbone at least. That’s really bad for us.”

Asked whether Diaz had also picked up an injury, he added: “I hope not. He has pain, it was knee on knee and in that moment we wanted to change twice and then he was down.

“He told me ‘little pain’. The physios were not too concerned but you never know.

“We play in three days and you never know how quick the turnaround is, so we have to see. I don’t know.”

While Klopp faces an anxious wait for news, Mikel Arteta’s Gunners came away from Anfield in an upbeat mood.

Defender Gabriel, who scored his first goal of the season after four minutes, told the club’s website: “It was a really intense game.

“It’s so hard to play here against a big team. Of course, we wanted three points.

“We came back with one point but the team played very well. We need to relax now and come back strong.

“I’m so happy to score my first goal this season and help the team — and thank the fans for their support.

“We are strong at the back but they have a quality as well. Everyone worked so hard.”

  • “It doesn’t make sense” – Nuno Santo laments controversial red card for Willy Boly

“It doesn’t make sense” – Nuno Santo laments controversial red card for Willy Boly

Following his first match in charge of Nottingham Forest, Nuno Espirito Santo voiced a call for a rule change after a contentious red card for Willy Boly marred their 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth.

The 32-year-old Boly received his marching orders in the 23rd minute, receiving two yellow cards, the second of which was issued by referee Rob Jones despite the defender seemingly cleanly winning the ball in a challenge with Adam Smith.

The match took a heartbreaking turn for Forest as Dominic Solanke completed a hat-trick, securing a last-gasp winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Expressing his frustration, Nuno, who recently took over from the dismissed Steve Cooper, criticized the current rules that prevent VAR from intervening to downgrade a yellow card.

He said: “Very bad decision. A decision that totally changed the game.

“It is more the frustration of knowing the approach of the referee is a bad one and the law says you cannot reverse the decision because it is two yellow cards.

“It is something they have to look at because it doesn’t make sense.

“First of all, the approach of the referee is bad. Boly has a first yellow card, which is fair, but then for the second the foot of Boly is under the foot of the Bournemouth player so the approach [from the referee] should be more cautious.

“Wait a little bit for the help of an assistant or the help of VAR, hold your decision and they will tell you. But after that he cannot reverse the decision.

“Our fans deserve better decisions. They come here to see football and suddenly they see something that really changes the game.

“I saw it over and over and over again to try and understand because I respect the referee. I know it is a tough job.

“I have seen it many times and I cannot understand it, It was bad. It is a mistake, a huge mistake.”

  • Reshuffling now will not make any huge difference for NPP – Alidu Seidu

Reshuffling now will not make any huge difference for NPP – Alidu Seidu

The Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, Dr. Alidu Seidu, has dismissed calls for President Akufo-Addo to undertake a government reshuffle.

During an appearance on Joy FM’s Midday News on Friday, December 22, Dr. Seidu expressed the view that while reshuffling is indeed crucial to keep ministers accountable, the timing may not be optimal at the moment.

“I think this call is too late because even if the President does reshuffle now, they will not be able to make time next year to bring anything meaningful that may translate to electoral victory,” the political scientist told Emefa Apawu.

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua, recently urged President Akufo-Addo to contemplate a reshuffle of government appointees as a strategic move to enhance the party’s chances of retaining political power in 2024.

Mr Kodua expressed his concerns during the party’s thanksgiving service on a Friday, emphasizing that the government’s vigor and dedication seem to have waned, affecting productivity levels. He suggested that a reshuffle could potentially revitalize the administration.

Contrarily, Dr. Alidu Seidu, the Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, offered a different perspective. According to him, implementing a reshuffle at this juncture may not yield substantial results, as the limited time remaining in office would hinder the appointed ministers from making a meaningful impact.

“Seven out of eight years? Next year is an election year, a very busy year. It’s going to be about the 2024 election.  How to win the election, retain government in power, move around campaigning for the flagbearer and all those things so they won’t even get time.

“That is why it is very important that once you are elected, the first year is always a honeymoon – you have to form your government by appointing people. Second, third, fourth, and fifth years, you have to do a lot. The seventh and eighth year is also an election year,” he explained.

LIVESTREAMING: Afua Asantewaa attempts to break Guinness World Sing-a-thon Record

Ghana’s Afua Asantewaa has embarked on an ambitious endeavor to break the record for the longest singing marathon by an individual, currently standing at 105 hours. The nearly five-day event commenced precisely at 12:00 am on Sunday, December 24th, and is set to conclude on December 27th, 2023.

Asantewaa sees this as a unique opportunity to showcase outstanding Ghanaian music to a global audience. Committed to promoting local talent, she has pledged to exclusively perform Ghanaian music throughout her record-breaking attempt.

The event, held at Akwaaba Village, is anticipated to draw thousands of music enthusiasts and well-wishers who wish to support Asantewaa in this historic feat.

To validate her record-breaking attempt, Asantewaa must meticulously document her preparations, including practices, interviews, and incorporate these into the official video recording of the attempt.

During the marathon, Asantewaa is permitted to sit, stand, or lie down as long as she continues singing. However, unlike traditional music performances, she cannot engage in activities like humming or drumming. The rules allow her to talk in between songs.

  • Joshua defends heavyweight title as he dismantles Wallin

Joshua defends heavyweight title as he dismantles Wallin

Anthony Joshua showcased his determination to secure a third world heavyweight championship by convincingly defeating Otto Wallin.

The 34-year-old former unified title-holder dominated the early rounds against Wallin, who previously went the distance with Tyson Fury in September 2019.

In the initial four rounds, Joshua skillfully controlled the bout, inflicting damage to Wallin’s face. The momentum escalated in the fifth round when a powerful left hook from Joshua staggered his opponent, forcing Wallin into survival mode until the round’s conclusion. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Wallin’s corner decided to wave off the fight, ending it with their fighter remaining on his stool.

After recording his third win of 2023, Joshua said: “Otto is a true warrior. The corner play a huge role so their fighter can live to fight another day.

“I’m a gifted fighter and I use my gift. I’m searching for greatness and [trainer] Ben Davison is a great addition to my goal. I’m sure you can see that today.

“We don’t celebrate when we win these fights, we celebrate when we win titles.

“Not so much a throwback fight, just another day in the office. Victory by any means.

“You want to do whatever it takes to be victorious. That’s all I want to be.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn added: “This Anthony Joshua is the best heavyweight in the world. With this mindset he is unbeatable.

“That was a punch-perfect performance against an excellent heavyweight — 2024 is going to be a massive year for him.”

Leading up to the event in Riyadh, much anticipation surrounded the possibility of a face-off between Joshua and former WBC champion Deontay Wilder. However, Wilder’s defeat and subpar performance against Joseph Parker earlier in the night shifted the narrative.

Despite the history of verbal sparring between Joshua and Wilder, AJ chose not to criticize his counterpart. Instead, he refrained from making negative remarks about Wilder’s performance, displaying a level of sportsmanship and restraint in acknowledging the challenges and outcomes of the night’s events.

He said: “I heard that Deontay lost. So what? He’ll be back.

“Everything he said about me, I could rip him apart but I’m going to take the higher ground.

“He can come back. I’m sure everyone still wants to see that fight.”

Hearn added: “We signed for Wilder, he lost tonight, that’s OK. It happens in boxing. Maybe it’s a blessing because this guy is about championships.”

  • Corruption has broken loose, Ghanaians are now tired of you – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo

Corruption has broken loose, Ghanaians are now tired of you – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo

In a recent address, former President John Mahama strongly criticized the Akufo-Addo administration, alleging that it has led Ghana into a state of rampant corruption.

Speaking during an end-of-year session with current Members of Parliament and prospective 2024 NDC parliamentary candidates, Mahama asserted that corruption remains a significant obstacle hindering the country’s progress.

He emphasized that attempts to curb corruption have proven ineffective and, instead, the issue has worsened over time. Mahama underscored the urgent need for decisive action to address the pervasive problem and its detrimental impact on Ghana’s development.

“Currently, corruption has broken loose and it is running riot all over the country. Indeed, Ghanaians have developed the syndrome I call scandal fatigue because if you have a scandal every week, you get tired, so everybody is tired of talking about NPP’s corruption.

“Just when you think you have seen the worst of it, they rise to even new levels that you can never imagine. One of those being the recent SML agreement. One wonders how they could have sat and conspired to rip off the nation with such a contract,” he said.

Mr. Mahama’s critique of the Akufo-Addo administration coincides with a robust defense put forth by the President regarding his track record in addressing corruption. During the launch of the assessment of Ghana’s inaugural national anti-corruption action plan, President Akufo-Addo vehemently refuted the label of being a “clearing agent.”

According to President Akufo-Addo, “Every single alleged act of corruption levelled against any of my appointees has been investigated by individual bodies such as the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and some cases by Parliament.”

“It is not my job to clear or convict a person accused of wrongdoing or of engaging in any acts of wrongdoing. Despite the efforts of some to tag me as a clearing agent.

“That is the job of the courts and the law enforcement agencies. My job is to act on allegations of corruption by referring the issues to the proper investigative agency for the relevant inquiry and action including if necessary the suspension of the affected official pending the conclusion of the investigation, that is exactly what has been done since I assumed the mantle of leadership,”he said.

He noted since he assumed office as President, “no evidence or allegation has been forthcoming that the Executive i.e. myself as President has made any attempt to influence the outcome of any of these investigations. The latest episode involving the former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah is evident for all to see.”

He also said the country has made remarkable progress in the fight against corruption under his administration.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) at the Ministry of Education, Kwasi Kwarteng Frimpong, has submitted his nomination forms to participate in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries in the Asante Akim North Constituency.

Speaking to the press after filing the forms, Mr. Frimpong emphasized the importance of unity among constituents to secure victory for the party.

He expressed his commitment to leading the party towards unity, considering it a patriotic duty to work towards the development of the area.

“This is a call for development which will be anchored on progress; at this critical time where the NPP needs to break the eight, I need to stand and unite my people to achieve this vision,” he said.

Mr. Kwarteng highlighted a concerning trend of apathy in voter behavior, pointing to a decrease in NPP votes in the constituency between 2020 and 2016. He stressed the urgency of addressing this trend promptly to reverse the decline and boost party support in the area.

The Asante Akim North Constituency has attracted the interest of five individuals vying for the parliamentary slot. The contenders include the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Andy Appiah Kubi, Mr. Kwasi Kwarteng Frimpong (PRO, Ministry of Education), Dr. Samuel Kwadwo Frimpong (Office of the Vice President), Mr. Stephen Obeng Saka (Businessman), and Mr. Kwadwo Baah Agyemang (former MP for the area).

A heated exchange occurred during the parliamentary debate on the VAT Amendment Bill between Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Ranking Member of Finance, Isaac Adongo.

Afenyo Markin accused Adongo of not thoroughly reading the document and refuted Adongo’s claim that the bill sought to introduce new taxes.

He cautioned, “Don’t talk about the imposition of tax if you have not read; don’t just comment because you want to enjoy the liberty of opposition to attack the government.

Isaac Adongo, your contention was Uber drivers are going to suffer, are you saying that we shouldn’t encourage local manufacturing of cars. Have you read this memorandum?” he said.

Then Minority MPs banged their tables in reaction.

Minority Leader Ato Forson intervened, urging the Speaker to allow Isaac Adongo to clarify and correct the record regarding the alleged failure to read the VAT Amendment Bill before the house.

Isaac Adongo was given the opportunity to clarify his comments. Following this, Parliament approved the Value Added Tax Amendment Bill 2023, which includes measures such as a 5 percent flat rate for the rental of commercial premises and the sale of immovable property by an estate developer.

The VAT Amendment Bill 2023 also aims to introduce a zero rate on locally produced sanitary pads and waive VAT on the import of electric vehicles for public transportation.

Despite opposition from the Minority caucus, citing concerns about tax imposition, a voice vote favored the majority at the second reading stage. The ayes recorded 137 votes, while the nays had 134, resulting in the approval of the amendment bill.

Aston Villa is reportedly interested in signing former Chelsea striker Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig during the January transfer window.

Villa, managed by Unai Emery, is looking to bolster its squad and is interested in Werner as a potential backup for star striker Ollie Watkins.

The club is aiming for success in both the Premier League and the Europa Conference League. The report also suggests that Villa plans to pursue a high-profile striker in the summer transfer window, with eased Financial Fair Play concerns allowing for more significant moves in the market.

Banker in court for stealing money from customer’s account

In a case before the Tarkwa circuit court, a 30-year-old banker named Edmond Nashiru is facing charges for allegedly dishonestly appropriating money from a customer’s account at Access Bank.

The accused, who works as a front desk officer at the bank, has pleaded not guilty to the charges and has been remanded into prison custody.

The complainant, Felicity Acquah, a rotational nurse, reported to the police that she received multiple mobile alerts on November 6, 2023, indicating that her savings account at Access Bank had been debited with a total amount of GH¢9,781.00 without her consent.

Upon seeking clarification from Edmond at the bank, he allegedly informed her that fraudsters had stolen her money. Subsequent police investigation, initiated on November 16, 2023, involved obtaining a court order to compel the bank to provide detailed information on the transaction.

The bank’s audit department reportedly found that Edmond was behind the theft, using his cell phone to transfer the money to two different MTN numbers.

Edmond was arrested and, during questioning, admitted to assisting Felicity in installing a banking application on her phone and obtaining her login credentials. He also disclosed that he had enlisted his brother’s help to acquire two Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards for the purpose of depositing the stolen money.

After completing the transactions, they reportedly discarded the SIM cards to avoid detection.

The court has adjourned the case to Thursday, December 28, 2023, for further proceedings.

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has made a commitment to construct a senior high school for the residents of Kwamankese in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese district of the Central region.

The former President announced this pledge during a durbar of Chiefs and People in Kwamankese, held as part of his two-day visit on Friday.

Expressing his concern, Mahama stated that it is unacceptable for Kwamankese to lack a senior high school, and he has vowed to address this gap by initiating the construction of a new educational facility in the area.

“As for this promise, I can make. If the NDC comes to power God willing, you’ll have a secondary school here in Kwamankese. It is not fair and right that you don’t have such a school here. The constituency is called Abura Asebu Kwamankese. In this constituency we have five secondary schools but all them are in the Abura and Asebu, leaving out Kwamankese with no senior high school. I have stated that I will make no more promises, but on this issue, I stand here to promise that when the NDC comes to power you the people of Kwamankese will have a secondary school,” Mahama said.

Mr. Mahama’s two-day tour of the Central Region commenced on Friday, December 22, 2023. • West Ham beats Man United as Bowen, Kudus and Paquetá combine again

West Ham beats Man United as Bowen, Kudus and Paquetá combine again

In a thrilling encounter at London Stadium, West Ham United secured a 2-0 victory over Manchester United, with Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus, and Lucas Paquetá once again proving to be the matchwinners.

The trio, who had previously combined to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers, showcased their synergy in the final 20 minutes, propelling West Ham into the Premier League’s top six just in time for Christmas.

The first half saw limited attacking rhythm, with both teams managing only four shots on target. Emerson’s early attempt for West Ham and Alejandro Garnacho’s chance for Manchester United were the closest either side came to scoring.

The opening 45 minutes ended with Tomáš Souček heading wide from James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick.

The second half, however, provided a more engaging spectacle. David Moyes’ tactical switch, placing Bowen in his natural position on the right, and repositioning Kudus and Paquetá centrally, proved pivotal.

Bowen’s goal came on 72 minutes when he capitalized on a rebound from his initial effort, scoring with his right knee.

The second goal occurred six minutes later as Paquetá seized on a defensive mistake by Willy Kambwala and set up Kudus, who clinically finished past André Onana.

West Ham’s ninth win of the season propelled them into sixth place, surpassing Manchester United, at least temporarily. This victory marked only the ninth occasion in 55 Premier League meetings that West Ham emerged triumphant against Manchester United.

  • WASSCE results have been improving since 2016, 2023 best so far – Education Minister

WASSCE results have been improving since 2016, 2023 best so far – Education Minister

Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, expressed commendation for the remarkable results of the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

During an appearance on Newsfile on Saturday, he announced that the 2023 performance sets a new record, marking the best results since the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy and the highest since 2015.

Dr. Adutwum attributed this achievement to the commitment and dedication of teachers who invested their time and energy in providing additional support and guidance, ultimately contributing to the outstanding performance of the students.

“We have teachers who have sacrificed their lives so much that, they stay after school, they are there before school and they support these students to work hard so that we can see the outcomes that we are seeing.”

Emphasizing the notable improvement in each subject of the WASSCE, the Minister affirmed that these results are indicative of the high quality of education being imparted in schools.

Examining specific subject results, Dr Adutwum pointed out notable progress, stating, “If we look at what has happened, in integrated science, 28.7% passed in 2015. When we say pass, we mean the pass that can take you to university, A1 to C6. Now it’s 66.82%, and this cannot be by accident. It has been increasing over the years.”

Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the government, headmasters, and teachers, the Minister emphasized their dedication to improving the quality of education. He underscored their commitment to providing the necessary resources and support to achieve positive outcomes in student performance.

In addition to lauding the Free SHS program, the Minister emphasized the significance of targeted interventions to assist students facing challenges in specific subjects. He stressed that intervention classes are specifically designed to enhance students’ proficiency in the subjects where they may be struggling.

“This is something that Wesley Girls have been doing for a long time. They assess students who come to them and after assessing, they prescribe interventions for them,” he added.

First tranche of Cocoa Syndicated Loan hits BoG’s account

The first tranche of the Cocoa Syndicated Loan, amounting to about $541 million, has been credited to the Bank of Ghana’s account, according to reports.

This represents a portion of the $800 million loan, and the second tranche of approximately $200 million is expected to be transferred to the Central Bank’s account in January 2024.

The Trade Facility Agreement for the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) was approved by Parliament in November 2023, allowing COCOBOD to finalize the paperwork with participating banks.

Under the terms of the agreement, COCOBOD will pay an interest rate of nearly 8%, including the one-month Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) and a margin of 2.65%.

The funds are expected to support the purchase of cocoa beans from farmers through license buying companies for the 2023/2024 crop season.

The inflow of funds is likely to bolster the Bank of Ghana’s reserves and strengthen its ability to support the Ghanaian cedi. News of the deal is already contributing to the stabilization of the cedi.

  • NPP and NDC cannot fight corruption, try Alan – Movement for Change

NPP and NDC cannot fight corruption, try Alan – Movement for Change

Director of Communications for the Movement for Change, Courage Nobi, has expressed the belief that Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen is the most suitable leader for Ghana to effectively combat corruption.

Mr Nobi contends that both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have fallen short in addressing corruption during their respective tenures in power.

According to Nobi, corruption has been a persistent issue during the years of governance by both major political parties. He sees Alan Kyerematen as the ideal leader to tackle this problem and bring about positive change in the country.

“We cannot force ourselves to choose between the NPP and NDC because neither of them is providing Ghanaians with a choice in 2024. There is no difference between the two parties when you look at them, and that is why going forward in 2024 and beyond, the fight against corruption cannot be won by these two political parties but by a leader who has a track record of integrity and that is Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.”

Courage Nobi emphasized that corruption is pervasive under the current government, and he projected that it could worsen in 2024.

He called on political leaders to take responsibility for combating corruption by setting examples through their own actions and conduct.

“The frustration is that you don’t finish discussing one scandal before another pops up, and that tells you how endemic corruption is, and I am afraid of how we will be swamped by scandals next year.

“You cannot fight corruption with the mere passage of laws, guidelines, and action plans. The best and easiest way to fight corruption is to be an example, be incorruptible, don’t participate, and make sure your family and friends do not participate and when you can deal with that, then you can deal with those who even attempt to be corrupt.”

  • TEWU embarks on indefinite strike over market premium arrears

TEWU embarks on indefinite strike over market premium arrears

The Teachers and Education Workers Union of TUC (TEWU-TUC) and the Senior Staff Association, Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), has embarked an indefinite strike at the University of Ghana, Korle Bu Campus, on December 22.

The strike is a response to prolonged delays in the payment of arrears of the Interim Hospital Market Premium to eligible staff.

In a statement released by the associations, it was explained that the decision to go on strike was prompted by the university’s failure to address the outstanding arrears covering the period from 2010 to 2018 despite numerous attempts.

As a result of the strike, several services have been withdrawn, including the processing of student admissions and graduations, medical services, security, dental care, laboratory facilities, hostel accommodations, mortuary services, laborers, cleaners, maintenance, and estate management.

The industrial action is a measure taken by the unions to draw attention to the unresolved payment issues and to put pressure on the university management to address the concerns of the staff.

  • Standards have not fallen within the Ghanaian education system – Education Minister

Standards have not fallen within the Ghanaian education system – Education Minister

Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Adutwum, has dismissed claims that standards have fallen within the Ghanaian education system, particularly in senior high schools.

He argued that despite a significant increase in enrollment due to the Free Senior High School policy, the country’s education system and learning outcomes have not experienced a decline.

Dr. Adutwum suggested that those asserting a fall in standards are basing their claims on a projection of what has occurred in other countries.

“So invariably you hear people talking that standards have fallen, things are so bad. It’s their projection as to what they think should be happening. Because around the world, if you look at education systems what happens invariably is that countries that increase enrollment rapidly diminish learning outcomes.

“So even education experts in Ghana, I’ve heard some of them say standards have fallen because enrollment has gone up. You see that is what is supposed to be but that is not what is happening.”

Dr. Yaw Adutwum described Ghana’s positive outcomes in education as “Ghanaian magic.” He attributed this success to the country’s surplus of highly skilled teachers and its ability to deploy them effectively, preventing any decline in standards despite a significant increase in enrollment, particularly with the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy.

“Ghana has a unique situation, we’re the only country probably one of the few countries in the world where we have excess teachers that can be deployed. In other jurisdictions even if they want to deploy they don’t have them.

“But in addition to that the interesting thing about the Ghanaian expansion and why we have improved learning outcomes is that when we improve the learning outcomes we created a different eco-system,” he explained.

“The first is that when we increased enrollment we made the education free, what it means is that whereas before free senior high school students will take two weeks four weeks to come to school because they were waiting at home to look for money to pay their fees.

“You made it free therefore during the first week they’re there. So because they come during the first week they’re not missing anything. Consequently, the time on task has improved tremendously in our schools,” he said.

Paterson scores late winner for Swansea

Jamie Paterson secured an injury-time winner, giving Swansea a 2-1 victory over Preston in the Championship.

The result marked Swansea’s first home win in eight games. Liam Millar had earlier equalized Paterson’s first goal, but in the dying moments of added time, Paterson struck again to secure the win for Swansea.

The match had lacked significant inspiration, with both teams seemingly headed for a draw until the dramatic late goal by Paterson.

The victory propelled Swansea four places up to 15th in the Championship table, while Preston’s struggles continued as they slipped to ninth.

The interim manager for Swansea, Alan Sheehan, had urged for clarity over the managerial vacancy at the club. The win adds to Swansea’s points tally under Sheehan’s temporary leadership.

I’ll revive ‘dead’ Komenda Sugar Factory when I return – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed a commitment to revive the Komenda Sugar Factory as part of his industrialization agenda.

He emphasized that the operationalization of the factory has the potential to generate around 7,300 direct and indirect jobs while also contributing to a reduction in sugar imports.

“The factory was rebirthed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and has the master plan to revive it when the party takes over the reins of government in 2025,” he said.

The Presidential candidate of the NDC gave the assurance on Friday when he paid a courtesy call on the Oguaa Traditional Council to begin his two-day working visit to the Central Region.

The Komenda Sugar Factory, located in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem (KEEA) Municipality of the Central Region, was commissioned in 2016 but faced operational challenges, leading to its closure.

The $35-million factory, built from an Indian Exim Bank facility, had not worked since its commissioning.

Mahama, while addressing economic issues, asserted that his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is better equipped to manage Ghana’s economy. He attributed the current economic challenges to the mismanagement by the current government, characterizing the state as near collapse.

Mahama outlined a comprehensive 24-hour policy that he plans to implement if given the mandate to lead the country again. The policy aims to stabilize the national currency, enhance reserves, reduce inflation and interest rates, create employment opportunities, improve livelihoods, and boost both import substitution and the export drive.

In addressing corruption, Mahama pledged to create a conducive environment for anti-corruption institutions to effectively combat corrupt practices

Nicolo Zaniolo saves Aston Villa from defeat in game against Sheffield United

Aston Villa missed the opportunity to go top of the Premier League, settling for a 1-1 draw against struggling Sheffield United. Nicolo Zaniolo’s late goal rescued Villa after Cameron Archer’s 87th-minute strike had initially given the Blades the lead.

The draw meant Villa remains in the second position, trailing behind Arsenal on goal difference. Sheffield United, despite their near-victory, managed to climb off the bottom of the table.

Leon Bailey had a disallowed goal, and Villa had three penalty claims rejected by VAR. The hosts failed to capitalize on their dominance, and the match looked destined for a surprising Sheffield United win until Zaniolo’s late equalizer.

The game marked a contrast from three-and-a-half years ago when Villa narrowly avoided defeat against the Blades. Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, expressed frustration after the match, while Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder employed a defensive strategy that almost secured a remarkable win for the visitors.

Despite missing the chance to go above Arsenal, Villa’s progress in the league remains evident. Sheffield United, on the other hand, showcased resilience, and the draw moved them off the bottom of the table. The match ended with Zaniolo’s header deep into stoppage time salvaging a point for Aston Villa.

  • “Media has an unparalleled role in fostering successful elections” – Information Minister

“Media has an unparalleled role in fostering successful elections” – Information Minister

Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, has emphasized the critical role of the Ghanaian media in fostering transparency and success in the upcoming general election.

“You have done it on many occasions, and we have no doubt that you have the capacity to do an even better job than you have done in years gone by.

“The media have an unparalleled role in fostering successful elections,” the Minister noted, as he addressed the Second Annual Dinner Night of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), in Accra.

The upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in the next year provide Ghana with another opportunity to further enhance its democratic credentials as citizens exercise their right to vote.

Ghana, operating under the Fourth Republican Constitution since 1992, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to democratic principles and the Rule of Law by successfully organizing eight elections. In the face of a challenging political landscape in the West African sub-region, marked by military interventions and subversion of democratic rule in countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger, Ghana stands out as one of the most peaceful nations.

As Ghana approaches the 2024 General Election, there is an expectation for the country to uphold and strengthen democratic governance, serving as a beacon of stability and democratic values in the region.

Oppong-Nkrumah, emphasizes the importance of the media in this process, urging them to focus on issues relevant to the country’s growth.

“We hope you will be doing your work as you have with fairness and balance, and we hope that the supreme national interest, as you have always done, is what will direct us to how you continue your work,” he advised.

He stressed that Ghana, with its established democratic reputation, has a responsibility to protect and maintain its standing. In the face of regional challenges and political crises in neighboring countries, he emphasized the importance of Ghana standing equal to the test and continuing to uphold the principles of democracy.

“I always argue that Ghana’s election process is one of the most transparent in the world, because from the polling station to the collation centre, everybody knows the numbers, and you, the media announce it all over.

“So, even before the EC announces it, you help all of us know who is going where in this election.

“We are counting on you in the year 2024 to do an equally diligent job in that election,” the Information Minister stated.

The Minister for Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahir Hammond, made an attempt to slap the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, in the Chamber of Parliament on Friday, December 22.

The incident occurred when Annoh-Dompreh urged Hammond to conclude his debate on the approval of three Justices of the Supreme Court.

In a video circulating on social media, K.T. Hammond is seen making swinging motions with his arms, attempting to slap Annoh-Dompreh. However, Annoh-Dompreh managed to evade the minister’s actions.

Following his actions, K.T. Hammond said, “Mr Speaker, I was actually going to add, I will keep talking, I will not sit down. I will talk to tomorrow. Okay, last sentence.”

Some MPs could be heard laughing in reaction to what transpired in the House. Others such as Ursula Owusu-EKuful expressed shock at the initial stage.

Manchester City’s commanding 4-0 victory over Fluminense in Saudi Arabia secured their fifth major honor in 2023, making them the first English side to simultaneously hold the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup.

Despite this monumental achievement, the team faces a demanding task with an upcoming fixture against Everton in just four days.

“When I close the chapter, it’s for the fact of eight years of incredible work behind the scenes. It’s unbelievable what we’ve done,” Guardiola explained in his post-match press conference.

“I have the feeling that of course today we’ll celebrate on the plane and tomorrow we rest. Goodison Park isn’t maybe the best to come back after winning the Club World Cup, honestly.

“But we’ll try to buy a new book and start to write beautiful histories. The players are still there, incredibly hungry and motivated. I’m really pleased for many people in the Club for many years.

“It’s a beautiful day. I could never have thought when I arrived in Manchester that we’d do what we have together, the titles we’ve won and winning the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.”

In a night that was largely filled with positive moments for Manchester City, there was a bit of concern when Rodrigo was forced off in Jeddah after a late collision. Despite the incident leading to his substitution, the Spain international was still able to join the team in celebrating their momentous achievement on the pitch.

Regarding Rodrigo’s fitness, Pep Guardiola provided an update, mentioning that a more detailed assessment of his condition would be conducted closer to their upcoming trip to Goodison Park.

He added: “I didn’t speak [with Rodrigo]. It looks like he feels good.

“It was a scare. The action was really tough.

“We’ll see in the next days how he reacts. I don’t know right now.”

  • Man City win FIFA Club World Cup

Man City win FIFA Club World Cup

Manchester City has concluded a historic 2023 by achieving a remarkable feat, becoming the first English club ever to concurrently hold the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

The crowning moment took place in Jeddah on Friday, where City secured the FIFA Club World Cup in their inaugural attempt, triumphing over Brazilian side Fluminense with a convincing 4-0 victory in the final held at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s squad, having completed this unprecedented quintuple, will now return to Manchester and immediately shift their focus to preparations for the upcoming Wednesday clash in the Premier League against Everton, as they aim to continue their pursuit of securing a fourth successive league title.

Expressing the team’s pride in this extraordinary accomplishment, club captain Kyle Walker highlighted the significance of winning all five trophies in a single calendar year, labeling the achievement as “special.”

“We’ve shown over the past 12 months we are the best team in the world. Our results prove that and the consistency we have managed has been amazing.

“To win these five trophies – for me, the five biggest prizes available to us – is incredible. I am so proud to have been a part of this and I can honestly say it’s an honour to play alongside these players; I couldn’t ask for better teammates.

“And it isn’t just the players – the team behind the team here at City are the best you could ever ask for and I want to put on record my thanks and appreciation for every single person who works here day to day to try and help us be the best we can be.

“The level of quality in football across the world right now is scary. It’s really, really hard to win consistently, so to be sat here today having won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Champions League, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup is really special and a huge achievement.

“It’s been the best year I have had in football and something I will never, ever forget.”

The 2022/23 season marked a historic milestone in Manchester City’s illustrious 129-year history. A phenomenal run of form saw the team secure victories in 22 matches and draw in five of the final 28 contests across all competitions. This exceptional performance solidified City’s status as only the second English team ever to achieve the prestigious Treble, consisting of triumphs in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.

The relentless pursuit of success carried into the subsequent season, where Pep Guardiola’s squad continued to make history by adding the Super Cup and Club World Cup to their already impressive collection. These achievements further cemented Manchester City’s legacy as a dominant force in football.

Pep Guardiola added: “I am so proud of this Club. What we have done is an outstanding achievement.

“To win this trophy is to be the best team in the world and our players, our coaches, our backroom staff, all of them work hard every single day to bring us this success.

“As a manager it is what I am most proud of; that we are always there. No matter how much we win, no matter what trophies we lift, we are there again to fight for the next one.

“To win the Treble was truly special, but to win two more trophies and now hold these five major titles shows the unique mentality of this team, of the Club and its fans.

“It is something no other English team has ever achieved and we will always remember this incredible time we spent together.”

For the City boss, the recent triumph represents another addition to his ever-expanding collection of silverware. Since his arrival at Manchester City in the summer of 2016, Pep Guardiola has now secured a total of 16 trophies. This impressive haul includes five Premier League titles, one Champions League, two FA Cups, four League Cups, one Super Cup, one Club World Cup, and two Community Shields.

Parliament to probe activities of SML over controversial contract with Finance Ministry

Parliament’s Finance Committee has announced its decision to investigate Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML) over allegations surrounding a purported 10-year contract with the Finance Ministry during Ken Ofori-Atta’s tenure.

Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, disclosed this information to the media on Friday, December 22.

“It is also important to note that the same Finance Committee working with parliament has resolved to initiate a probe into the SML. I urge the Committee of Finance to conduct this probe diligently and in a manner that will show transparency,” Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said.

A Fourth Estate report has raised concerns about the legitimacy of a contract, indicating that Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has expanded it, potentially costing the state $100 million over the next decade.

The contract assigns Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) the responsibility of monitoring and reporting fuel product diversion, dilution, and general noncompliance in the petroleum industry, tasks previously handled by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) has issued a response to allegations surrounding a purported 10-year contract with the Finance Ministry during Ken Ofori-Atta’s tenure.

The company contested the claims made in “The Fourth Estate” documentary, asserting that it contains misrepresentations and false information.

In a press release from its Public Relations Unit on Tuesday, December 19, SML clarified that its contractual agreement with the Finance Ministry and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) spans 5 years, contrary to the reported 10 years. Additionally, the company denied the assertion that it annually receives a substantial $100 million for its services.

“The documentary represents a set of misrepresentations, false claims, and a general lack of understanding of the entire operations of the company. We challenge Fourth Estate to produce any contract anywhere that is for a 10-year period.”

“The 5th PPA Board at its 46th Board meeting in a letter referenced PPA/CEO/09/2286/23 approved a contract duration of five (5) years.”

Meanwhile, the Finance Committee of Parliament has proposed a suspension of all payments associated with the government’s contract with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML) starting next year.

This recommendation is based on the need for a parliamentary investigation into the said contract.

According to the committee, after a thorough review of the contract, it was determined that Parliamentary approval is necessary in accordance with the Financial Management Act. Consequently, the committee deems it essential to notify the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) about this statutory requirement.

This development came to light during a debate on the approval of the budget for other government obligations in the year 2024.

Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson speaking to journalists on the deal said “As part of the report the parliament of the Republic of Ghana has resolved that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) must immediately stop all payments to SML beginning January 1, 2024.

“Again, parliament resolves that GRA must be aware that the contract that the Ministry of Finance has with SML constitutes a multi-year commitment and section 33 of the Public Financial Management Act is clear on the matter that all multi-year commitments must be presented to parliament for consideration and approval.”

“So the contract in its current shape is not valid and must come to parliament for approval,” he said.

K.T. Hammond nearly slaps Annoh-Dompreh during debate on Akufo-Addo’s Supreme Court Judge nominees

Minister for Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahir Hammond on Friday, December 22, attempted slapping Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, while in the Chamber of Parliament.

The Minister made the unexpected move when the Majority Chief Whip prompted him to conclude his debate on the approval of the 3 Justices of the Supreme Court.

In a video on social media, K.T. Hammond can be seen swinging his arms several times, but all proved futile as Annoh-Dompreh maneuvered to escape the clutches of the minister.

On Wednesday, December 20, three judges nominated by President Akufo-Addo for the Supreme Court appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament. These nominees have been put forward to fill vacant positions on the Supreme Court bench.

The first nominee to face the committee is Justice Henry Anthony Kwofie, followed by the other two nominees, Yaw Darko Asare and Richard Adjei-Frimpong. Both Yaw Darko Asare and Richard Adjei-Frimpong currently serve on the Court of Appeal.

10% not enough, we’ll make laws that allow Ghana earn more income from its minerals – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has announced that if elected, his government will invest in the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) to explore mineral resource deposits across the country.

The aim is to increase earnings from the country’s mineral deposits, as Mahama believes that the current situation is not in the best interest of Ghana.

Presently, foreign investors often undertake geological surveys and benefit more from successful mining operations.

“When they explore and discover the mineral, they apply for mining lease to mine. Because they are funding it, it is very difficult to spell out the terms,” Mr. Mahama said.

Former President John Dramani Mahama addressed the issue of mineral deposits in Ghana during a Town Hall meeting in Ayeldo-Abura-Asebu Kwamankese in the Central Region.

He highlighted the need for Ghana to benefit more from its mineral resources and emphasized the NDC’s plan to invest in the Ghana Geological Survey Authority to explore and maximize the potential of these deposits for the benefit of the country’s economy.

“What we benefit now is ten percent current interest, three percent royalties and corporate income tax of 35 percent. That is what we get. The foreigners take away the rest,” he said.

After the discovery of lithium in commercial quantities in the Central Region, there has been increased debate on the exploration deal. The Chief of Ayeldo, Okakaben Idun Andoh X, stated that initial geological investigations had confirmed commercial quantities of lithium in the area. The community anticipates improved fortunes from mining the mineral.

However, John Dramani Mahama emphasizes the importance of implementing the right policies to maximize the benefits of such mineral resources for the country.

“We will make laws that will allow the country to make the necessary income. We must make more from the mineral resources than what we are making presently,” he added.

  • VAT Amendment Bill passed by Parliament

VAT Amendment Bill passed by Parliament

On Friday, December 22, 2023, Parliament concluded its session before the festive season by passing the VAT Amendment Bill, securing a majority vote.

The significant changes brought about by this bill include the imposition of VAT on insurance premiums and imported educational materials such as textbooks, erasers, and other stationery.

Notably, the VAT Amendment Bill also introduces a zero-rate on VAT for locally manufactured sanitary pads, a move aimed at promoting accessibility to essential hygiene products.

During the vote, 137 members voted in favor of the motion, while 134 opposed it. Notably, three members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) were absent during the vote: Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson, Asawase MP Muntaka Mubarak, and Bia West MP Augustine Tawiah. Additionally, one member from the Majority side, representing the NPP, was also absent.

Initially, the Speaker conducted a voice vote, with the Ayes prevailing. However, the Minority challenged this decision, prompting a headcount to ensure accuracy.

The Minority in Parliament continues to express strong opposition to the 2024 budget, citing concerns over the embedded taxes. They argue that these taxes will exacerbate the hardships faced by the people of Ghana.

The debate surrounding the budget and its implications remains a point of contention between the Majority and Minority in Parliament.

Akufo-Addo’s failure to assent bills shows he lacks understanding of the constitution – Speaker Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has once again criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for withholding his assent to three bills passed by Parliament.

Speaker Bagbin asserted that the president’s refusal to sign the three private member’s bills demonstrates a misunderstanding of the constitutional processes of the country.

President Akufo-Addo, in a letter to Parliament, explained that his refusal to sign the Criminal Offences Amendment Bills 2023 Numbers one and two and the Ghana Armed Forces Amendment Bill 2023, sponsored by the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu, was a result of their financial implications on the consolidated fund and their contravention of the constitution.

Addressing the issue on Friday, December 22, Speaker Bagbin described the president’s position as unfortunate.

“In the absence of a judicial determination from the Supreme Court, the president’s unilateral assessment of unconstitutionality does not hold legal water. It is a departure from the established legal procedure, norms and practices that govern our constitutional democracy.”

“The appropriate lawful response if they were genuine concerns about the constitutionality of the legislation, action of this house we agree to seek judicial review from the Supreme Court.”

“The steps taken by the president in this matter reflect a misunderstanding of the constitutional process and undermining the principles that uphold our democratic governance,” he said.

We will retaliate with any weapon we find if citizens continue to attack our officers – GNFS

The Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), A.D.O1 Alex King Nartey, has expressed concerns about attacks on personnel who arrive late at fire scenes.

According to him, residents manhandle officers in the line of duty and even vandalize fire tenders.

This follows a disturbing incident at the O.A. Travel and Tours terminal at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle (Avenor) where unidentified individuals, incensed by the alleged delay in the Fire Service’s response to a fire emergency, resorted to pelting the fire tenders with stones.

It took the intervention of the police service to restore calm and allow the firefighters to get to work. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program, Mr. Nartey said they will not tolerate such attacks from people anymore.

He emphasized that fire personnel will defend themselves with any weapon available should they come under attack.

“If residents continue to attack us in line of duty, whatever weapon we have, we can use it to defend ourselves at the peril of our lives. You cannot attack us during the course of our work; whatever weapon we have, we can use it to attack you” the Fire Service PRO fumed.

Mr. Nartey explained that they often arrive late at fire scenes due to illegal structures located in fire-prone areas in Accra. The presence of such structures hinders the quick and efficient movement of fire tenders.

“Sometimes, the unauthorized placement of metal containers and wooden kiosks for business purposes by private individuals in certain areas also becomes a hindrance for the vehicles to have easy access to the scenes of fire outbreaks,” he added.

Mr. Nartey said they are collaborating with the Police to address the menace of miscreants attacking personnel.

The GNFS on December 20 shared a report from AdomNews expressing the Service’s commitment to retaliate when attacked. But this post has been pulled down.

Appiah-Kubi to battle 5 others for Asante Akyem North seat in NPP Primaries

Five individuals have taken up nominations to challenge the incumbent Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi.

The aspirants include Kwasi Kwarteng Frimpong, the PRO for the Ministry of Education; Dr. Samuel Kwadwo Frimpong from the Office of the Vice President; seasoned businessman Stephen Obeng Saka; and the former MP and CEO for the Accra Digital Centre, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang.

The aspirants presented their visions for the constituency while picking up their nomination forms.

“We have five people who want to contest for the seat in Asante Akyem and it includes the incumbent MP Andy Appiah Kube.

“The aspirants have all come with their messages and vision apart from the sitting MP. Basically, they are all talking about education, health, and other infrastructure. The various individuals have said that they have built networks they can utilise to bring development into the constituency,” he said.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Elections Committee in the Asante Akyem North constituency pointed out some of the challenges facing the area, emphasizing the necessity for infrastructure upgrades in schools and improved housing for teachers to enhance the quality of education in the constituency.

“We have very bad roads in this constituency and also getting jobs is very difficult. So, we need them to help us in that regard. They can bring in the government’s one district one factory to this constituency.

Also, we have some challenges in our education sector. Most of the school buildings are not in very good shape. Places to
accommodate the teachers is also a challenge we are dealing with. So we struggle retaining teachers in this area,” he added.

  • Super League organisers are detached from football – Ange

Super League organisers are detached from football – Ange

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou criticized the concept of the European Super League, stating that such ideas often originate from individuals who are “detached from what this game is all about.”

He expressed his disapproval, highlighting the disconnect between such proposals and the essence of football. Tottenham was among the clubs initially involved in the Super League in 2021 but withdrew swiftly due to widespread fan protests.

The recent ruling by the European Court of Justice has compelled UEFA to consider proposals for alternative competitions, although the six Premier League teams from the original Super League have distanced themselves from any revival attempt.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has also vowed he will “make sure the European Super League doesn’t happen” if he becomes Prime Minister but Postecoglou believes the plans are a non-starter if fans are not on board.

The Australia said: “The response it got the first time around is a pretty good indicator of where it sits within the footballing fraternity in general.

“That’s always a pretty decent barometer. I always think with these concepts they’re done in a room with people who sometimes are detached from what this game is all about.

“It won’t surprise anyone that I’m fairly conservative with these things. I’m a traditionalist. I don’t like the game changing too much, I don’t like rules changing too much.

“But I guarantee you I won’t be in that room when these kind of concepts are put together. But you have a fairly good barometer of what the most important people — the fans — felt about it and football people in general, so we’ll see what the outcome is.”

Arsenal and Liverpool have released statements affirming their dedication to mainstream European football, following similar declarations from the other four members of the ‘Big Six’ on Thursday.
