2 allegedly arrested for looting items during Adum Market fire outbreak

Two individuals have reportedly been arrested for looting items amid the raging fire that engulfed parts of Adum Market early Friday morning, March 21.

The blaze, which started in the early hours, spread rapidly to nearby shops, resulting in devastating losses for business owners.

Eyewitnesses say the suspects took advantage of the chaos to steal goods from affected stores, prompting security officers to intervene. National security operatives at the scene confirmed the arrests, emphasizing that law enforcement is working to maintain order as firefighters battle the inferno.

One of the major challenges for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has been reaching the fire due to the market’s congestion and narrow pathways. Firefighters have had to navigate through tight spaces, making firefighting efforts difficult.

Additionally, many of the affected shops stored highly flammable materials, further complicating attempts to control the blaze. Reports indicate that six fire trucks were dispatched immediately, yet the fire continues to pose a threat to more businesses.

Meanwhile, a government minister is receiving a briefing from national security operatives regarding the situation on the ground. Officials have assured that investigations will continue into the cause of the fire and the security situation surrounding the incident.

The affected section of Adum Market is known for selling second-hand clothes and housing seamstresses and watch repairers. Business owners have been left counting their losses as firefighters strive to bring the situation under control.

GAF food suppliers owed GHC270m by previous govt – Defence Minister

Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah has revealed that food suppliers for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) are owed a staggering GHC270 million due to unpaid bills accumulated under the previous administration.

Speaking after a crucial meeting on Thursday to discuss sustainable food supply for the military, Dr. Boamah highlighted the financial burden inherited by the current government.

In a Facebook post, he wrote, “It was revealed that the Akufo-Addo Bawumia government did not prioritise food provision for the Ghana Armed Forces.”

Expressing concern over the impact of the debt, he added, “Yet, we all know soldiers don’t march on empty stomachs. Huge food supply debt!”

According to the Defence Minister, between August 2023 and December 2024, the previous government accrued the outstanding amount, creating a challenge for food suppliers who are yet to be paid.

Dr. Boamah assured that Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson is committed to addressing the issue by ensuring that ongoing bills are settled while efforts are made to clear the inherited debt.

“We work towards settling the arrears of over GHC270 million left behind by the NPP government,” he noted.

To prevent future food supply shortages, Dr. Boamah outlined plans for immediate interventions to stabilize the situation.

“We’re determined to provide short-term and medium-term solutions to this avoidable food supply problem. We’ll commence that journey of food supply solutions next week,” he stated.

Akufo-Addo-led govt didn’t prioritise food provision for GAF – Defence Minister

Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah has criticized the previous government for neglecting food provision for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), resulting in a significant debt to food suppliers. He made these remarks following a high-level meeting held on Thursday to address long-term solutions for food supply to the military.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Boamah expressed concern over the situation, stating, “It was revealed that the Akufo-Addo Bawumia government did not prioritise food provision for the Ghana Armed Forces.”

Highlighting the severity of the issue, he added, “Yet, we all know soldiers don’t march on empty stomachs. Huge food supply debt!”

The Defence Minister disclosed that between August 2023 and December 2024, the previous administration accumulated an outstanding debt of approximately GHC270 million to food suppliers.

To address the financial burden, Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson has assured that current bills will be settled while efforts are made to clear the arrears inherited from the previous government.

“We work towards settling the arrears of over GHC270 million left behind by the NPP government,” Dr. Boamah noted.

As part of efforts to resolve the crisis, the Defence Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing both short-term and medium-term solutions to prevent further disruptions.

“We’re determined to provide short-term and medium-term solutions to this avoidable food supply problem. We’ll commence that journey of food supply solutions next week,” he stated.

  • Adum Market fire can be doused in the next 3 to 4 hours – National Security Operative

Adum Market fire can be doused in the next 3 to 4 hours – National Security Operative

Firefighters battling a raging blaze at Adum Market in Kumasi have been given an estimated timeline of three to four hours to bring the situation under control.

According to a national security operative on the ground, emergency responders are facing major challenges due to structural obstructions, prompting authorities to deploy excavators and bulldozers to clear the way.

“I think it can take extra 3, 4 hours to quench the fire. We have 11 tenders here. So it will take about 4, 5 hours to quench it,” the operative said.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Friday, March 21, has already caused extensive damage, with numerous shops and stalls reduced to ashes.

The affected section of the market is known for selling second-hand clothing and housing seamstresses, tailors, and watch repairers. The presence of highly flammable materials has intensified the blaze, making it difficult for firefighters to contain.

Despite having sufficient water in the fire tenders, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has struggled to reach the source of the fire due to narrow pathways and wooden structures blocking access. The operative emphasized that these obstructions have been a major setback in firefighting efforts.

“There’s water in the tenders, but how to get to the source of the fire is the problem. The structures, these wooden structures that they have on the railway, that is the major problem. The military has come, and they are bringing extra people to help us,” he explained.

To address these challenges, authorities have ordered the deployment of heavy-duty machinery to remove the obstructions, allowing firefighters to move freely and intensify their efforts.

“The way forward is we are bringing excavators, bulldozers to come and clear this so the fire tenders will get access.”

Initially, six fire trucks were dispatched to the scene, but additional resources, including military personnel, have since been mobilized to assist in controlling the blaze.

Meanwhile, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has visited the scene to assess the damage and receive a briefing from national security officials coordinating the response.

Efforts to control a raging fire at Adum Market in Kumasi have been hindered by obstructive structures, forcing authorities to deploy excavators and bulldozers to clear pathways for firefighters.

A national security operative on-site revealed that officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have faced significant challenges reaching the core of the fire due to makeshift wooden structures built along railway lines within the market. He emphasized that without immediate intervention, the situation could worsen.

“There’s water in the tenders, but how to get to the source of the fire is the problem. The structures, these wooden structures that they have on the railway, that is the major problem. The military has come, and they are bringing extra people to help us,” he told reporters.

He further disclosed that heavy machinery, including excavators and bulldozers, would be brought in to clear the area, ensuring fire trucks gain access.

“The way forward is we are bringing excavators, bulldozers to come and clear this so the fire tenders will get access.”

The inferno, which broke out in the early hours of Friday, March 21, has already caused extensive damage to businesses. Firefighters have been battling the blaze for hours, and according to the security operative, the operation could take up to five hours to fully bring it under control.

“I think it can take extra 3, 4 hours to quench the fire. We have 11 tenders here. So it will take about 4, 5 hours to quench it,” he stated.

Reports indicate that the fire started in a section of the market known for selling second-hand clothing and housing tailors, seamstresses, and watch repairers. Due to the presence of highly flammable materials, the flames spread rapidly, making containment efforts more difficult.

Firefighters initially deployed six trucks to the scene, but access to the fire has been severely restricted by congestion within the market. Narrow pathways and wooden kiosks have forced emergency responders to maneuver through tight spaces while attempting to put out the blaze.

Meanwhile, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has visited the scene to assess the damage and receive a briefing from national security operatives coordinating the emergency response.

Ashanti Regional Minister arrives at Adum Market where inferno ravages properties

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister, has arrived at Kumasi’s Central Business District, where the Adum Market is being destroyed by fire.

The fire started early Friday morning, March 21, and quickly spread to nearby shops, causing heavy losses for business owners. It has been hours since the Ghana National Fire Service officers began combating the inferno. Reports indicate that six fire trucks were sent to the scene immediately.

The minister is taking a briefing from the national security operatives present.

One of the biggest challenges for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was accessing the burning area. The market’s congestion and narrow pathways made it hard for fire trucks to get close. Firefighters had to maneuver through tight spaces while trying to put out the flames.

Many of the shops stored highly flammable materials, making it difficult for firefighters to bring the blaze under control.

The affected area of the market is known for selling second-hand clothes and housing seamstresses and watch repairers.

This comes at a time when the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has deployed a specialized task force across the country in an effort to combat the growing frequency of fires in the markets.

This measure aims to enhance safety and prevent further destruction caused by market fires.

Chief Fire Officer Julius A. Kuunuor emphasized the importance of vigilance, explaining that fire personnel and vehicles will be stationed at various market locations daily, providing fire coverage from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.

The GNFS also established a dedicated patrol team that will conduct regular rounds in major markets, ensuring continuous monitoring and a quick response to potential fire hazards. In addition to these measures, fire units have been set up in key markets to facilitate safety education, conduct routine inspections, and enforce safety regulations.

  • We are bringing Bawumia back for 2028 elections – Adwoa Safo

We are bringing Bawumia back for 2028 elections – Adwoa Safo

Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has declared her unwavering support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) once again in the 2028 elections, insisting that he deserves another opportunity just as past leaders who eventually won after multiple attempts.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews on Thursday, March 20, she dismissed concerns about Bawumia’s popularity, arguing that Ghana’s political history proves that many successful leaders did not win on their first attempt.

“We are going to bring Dr. Bawumia back as flagbearer for the NPP. He is the best person to lead the party. We have marketed him before, and we will market him again. Every person deserves a second chance,” she said.

Drawing parallels with previous presidents, Adwoa Safo cited examples of leaders who had to contest multiple times before securing victory.

“Former President Kufuor went how many times before he got the nod? Former President Akufo-Addo contested in 2007 and lost, went again in 2012 and lost. After the 2016 election petition, he finally won. Even Prof Mills contested several times before winning, and President Mahama has also run multiple times. So why are they telling Dr. Bawumia that Ghanaians don’t like him? And now they want to put that in a report and expect us to accept it? No,” she stated.

She also pushed back against attempts to silence Bawumia’s supporters, insisting that every party member has the right to express their opinion.

“Nobody brought me into this party, and the party does not belong to any one person. We are all here to build the party, so nobody can force me out. Other people speak, and when other people speak and it is not for something that is pushing for the Bawumia agenda, that is okay but when it is for something that is for the Bawumia agenda, everybody should keep quiet. We will not be suppressed,” she said.

Reaffirming her commitment to Bawumia’s bid for the presidency, she made it clear that she and other supporters would continue to push for his leadership.

“We will not resign until we have Dr. Bawumia as the president of this country. He deserves it. He is a humble person, an honest person,” she said.

  • L.I. to repeal President’s power to permit mining in forest reserves successfully laid in Parliament

L.I. to repeal President’s power to permit mining in forest reserves successfully laid in Parliament

The incumbent government has successfully presented before Parliament the Legislative Instrument (L.I.) aimed at revoking the President’s authority to grant mining licenses in forest reserves at a time when the government has renewed the fight against illegal mining also known as galamsey.

This follows an earlier attempt to introduce the L.I. on Tuesday, which was delayed due to procedural disagreements between the Majority and Minority caucuses.

Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala, was initially expected to present the instrument. However, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin insisted that it undergo a mandatory pre-laying process before being formally tabled in the House. Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, on the other hand, argued that the amendment was a straightforward, one-clause revision that had already secured consensus.

After intense deliberations, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor ruled that the instrument must be subjected to a three-day pre-laying process. He subsequently tasked the Subsidiary Legislation Committee to review the L.I. and submit its report by Thursday, March 20.

With the committee’s review now completed, the L.I. was successfully laid before Parliament yesterday.

Presenting the instrument on behalf of the Environment Minister, Minister for Local Government Ahmed Ibrahim assured the House that the government had taken public concerns into account. “The revocation will go a long way to help the image of the house,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Patrick Boamah, Chairman of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee, reaffirmed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) support for the policy change, stating that there was no opposition from the Majority side.

“This side of the house is not opposed to the revocation of this instrument,” he said.

Once laid, the L.I. will mature after 21 parliamentary sitting days before taking full effect.

L.I. 2462, originally enacted in November 2022 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, granted the President the authority to issue mining licenses in forest reserves. During his tenure, over 2,100 mining-related permits were issued, including a notable surge of 318 licenses in his final week in office. The law faced widespread criticism for facilitating environmental degradation and worsening the illegal mining crisis.

The introduction of the new L.I. comes amid Ghana’s ongoing battle against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. The practice has resulted in severe pollution of water bodies, destruction of forested lands, and a decline in cash crop production, particularly cocoa and cashew.

If passed, the new legislation will mark a significant step toward addressing the environmental damage caused by mining activities, ensuring greater oversight and accountability in the sector.

  • Adwoa Safo referred to Disciplinary C’ttee for disregarding NPP directive against media commentary

Adwoa Safo referred to Disciplinary C’ttee for disregarding NPP directive against media commentary

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has officially been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for further action following her recent media engagements about party issues.

The NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, charged its members and sympathizers to cease discussions of the party’s internal issues and challenges following their heavy defeat to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections.

In a statement shared on March 20, Mr Kodua, in reference to Article 10(7)(5)  of the Party’s constitution, which emphasizes the importance of unity and discipline within the party, urged members to “immediately cease discussing Party issues that create unrest, negativism, and disaffection in the media and other related platforms.”

Acknowledging the impact of their defeat on members, he reminded them of their duty to defend the party’s reputation, as outlined in Article 3(5) of the Constitution, and warned that anyone who disobeys this directive will face disciplinary action.

“Going forward, the National, Regional, and Constituency Party leadership shall respectively refer any member who violates this directive to the appropriate disciplinary committees of the Party,” parts of the statement read.

The General Secretary’s warnings come at a time when, after over three months of losing power to the NDC, members still discuss and deliberate on the circumstances, actions, and inactions that led to the party’s ‘embarrassing’ defeat in the just-ended elections.

In an interview with the media, Sarah Adwoa Safo, accused the party leadership of orchestrating her loss in the parliamentary primaries, citing her prolonged absence from Parliament as a misunderstood issue. She also berated her former contender, Mike Oquaye, for disrespecting her on several platforms in his bid to become the party’s representative in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Also, Dr. Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, has openly criticized certain individuals within the party, threatening to expose those he believed were responsible for the defeat.

  • I didn’t vote for the e-levy – Adwoa Safo

    I didn’t vote for the e-levy – Adwoa Safo

Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has defended her decision to oppose the controversial Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy), emphasizing that it was a major factor in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) electoral loss.

In an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, March 20, Adwoa Safo explained why she refused to support the policy, arguing that it failed to fulfill its intended purpose and instead placed an undue burden on Ghanaians.

“I didn’t vote for the e-levy, and I have no regrets about my decision,” she stated. “I refrained from supporting it because I believed it wouldn’t benefit the people of Ghana. Instead, it would take away from their already limited resources, especially the most vulnerable members of society.”

Reflecting on the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, she pointed to the e-levy as one of the key reasons for the party’s decline in popularity.

“Ghanaians voted against us partly because of the E-levy,” she asserted.

She further criticized how the tax affected individuals in low-income jobs, particularly those relying on mobile money services to support their families in rural areas.

“Individuals who were most affected were those working in low-paying jobs, who relied on sending money back to their families in the villages. These individuals were already struggling, and the e-levy took away the little they had. It was a tax on their hard-earned money, further deepening their difficulties,” she added.

Adwoa Safo also highlighted the contradiction between government assurances and the economic reality that unfolded after the levy’s implementation.

“We were told that by introducing the e-levy, Ghana could avoid going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, in the end, we still ended up seeking IMF support. Despite implementing this tax, the government was unable to avoid the very financial assistance it promised we could manage without.”

Referencing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 campaign promise to abolish the e-levy, she said recent developments had validated her stance.

“I feel vindicated,” she said. “If the e-levy was truly a good tax, why did we still end up at the IMF? How can we justify taxing those who are already struggling, especially when it didn’t even prevent us from seeking IMF support?”

She concluded by reiterating that the policy had failed in its objectives and only worsened financial hardship for ordinary Ghanaians.

“It just didn’t make sense,” she said. “The e-levy hurt ordinary Ghanaians, and in the end, it didn’t achieve what it promised.”

The e-levy, first introduced by the Finance Ministry on May 1, 2022, and signed into law by then-President Nana Akufo-Addo on March 31, 2022, originally stood at 1.75% before public backlash forced a reduction to 1%. It applied to electronic transactions, including mobile money transfers, bank transactions, and merchant payments. Critics argued that it disproportionately affected low-income earners and small businesses, fueling widespread opposition.

Meanwhile, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Ampem Nyarko has announced that the e-levy will be scrapped by the end of March. Speaking on Channel One TV’s OXFAM Tax Dialogue on Tuesday, March 18, he confirmed that its removal is tied to the approval of the 2025 budget and appropriation bill.

  • I will not contest Dome-Kwabenya seat again – Adwoa Safo declares

I will not contest Dome-Kwabenya seat again – Adwoa Safo declares

Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has firmly ruled out any plans to seek re-election for the parliamentary seat, citing her experiences in the constituency as a key factor in her decision.

Speaking in a media interview on Thursday, March 20, Adwoa Safo reflected on her tenure, expressing disappointment over how she was treated despite her dedication to the development of Dome-Kwabenya.

“What I’ll say is, considering what I’ve been through, considering how I’ve been treated in the constituency, despite my devotion, sacrifices, hard work, I don’t think so. I won’t. It will take my father to change my mind. I won’t. I have done 12 solid years and I’ve left a good legacy in the constituency. I will not contest Dome-Kwabenya,” she stated.

Looking ahead, she emphasized her focus on new opportunities beyond parliamentary politics.

“We move forward in life and not regress. I am moving forward. I am looking at other bigger things. I am looking at Speakership, higher challenging opportunities,” she added.

Adwoa Safo first entered Parliament in 2013 and served three consecutive terms before losing her party’s parliamentary primary on January 27, 2024. The contest saw her face stiff competition from Dr. Mike Oquaye Jnr, CEO of the Free Zones Authority, and Sheela Oppong Sakyi. Oquaye Jnr emerged victorious with 1,194 votes, while Adwoa Safo secured 328 votes. Sheela Oppong Sakyi finished third with just over 100 votes.

Her electoral defeat followed a period of controversy, during which she spent nearly a year outside Ghana attending to personal matters. Her prolonged absence, which affected her parliamentary and ministerial duties at the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, sparked widespread criticism from constituents and party members.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) suffered further setbacks in the 2024 general elections, losing the Dome-Kwabenya seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the first time.

Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the NDC narrowly defeated Mike Oquaye Jnr, securing 50,967 votes against his 50,669 votes. The Electoral Commission officially declared her the winner on December 31, 2024, marking a historic victory for the NDC in the constituency.

BoG confirms MTN MoMo isn’t licensed to undertake cross-border transactions to Nigeria

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has clarified that MTN Ghana’s MobileMoney Limited has not been authorised to facilitate cross-border transactions with MTN Nigeria.

Contrary to reports suggesting otherwise, the Central Bank emphasized that no such license has been issued for international money transfers between the two subsidiaries.

In a statement addressing developments in Ghana’s fintech sector, the BoG explained that while MTN MoMo lacks approval for cross-border transactions, another regulated initiative is being piloted under its supervision. The initiative, BrijX—a B2B Currency Swap Platform developed by Brij Fintech Ghana—has been approved for testing within the BoG’s regulatory sandbox framework.

“Bank of Ghana has taken note of media publications suggesting that MTN Ghana has been licensed to conduct cross-border transactions with MTN in Nigeria. The Bank hereby states that MobileMoney Limited, providers of MoMo from MTN, has not been licensed or authorised to conduct cross-border transactions,” the statement read.

    https://twitter.com/thebankofghana/status/1902746436980146605/photo/1

Unlike traditional remittance services, BrijX operates as a digital marketplace, allowing direct currency swaps between the Ghanaian Cedi and the Nigerian Naira without the need for forex transactions or the physical movement of funds. The platform integrates with banks, mobile money providers, and other licensed Payment Service Providers (PSPs) to enable seamless currency exchanges.

The BoG noted that BrijX, which commenced live testing in February 2025, initially involves MTN MoMo users and will soon be extended to G-Money customers. The pilot is subject to stringent regulatory controls, including transaction limits, restricted participation, a defined testing period, and strict adherence to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols.

Following the pilot phase, the BoG will evaluate BrijX’s performance to determine its compliance with Ghana’s financial regulations and its potential for wider adoption.

Reaffirming its commitment to secure and efficient financial services, the BoG assured stakeholders that it remains dedicated to fostering innovation while maintaining strong consumer protection measures.

Composition of new SEC board stalls Electrochem’s listing on GSE

Electrochem Ghana Limited’s plans to go public on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) have hit a temporary setback due to the absence of a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) board.

The company, which operates West Africa’s largest salt production facility, is awaiting the reconstitution of the board before proceeding with its Initial Public Offering (IPO).

During a tour of Electrochem’s production site in Ada by the Minerals Income and Investment Fund (MIIF), the Group Chief Executive, Kwaku Amprofi, explained that the company was fully prepared for the listing but had to pause the process due to the dissolution of the SEC board.

“Our original plan to go public was scheduled for August 2024, but by June 2024, the SEC board ended its term and there was no board. So we could not go ahead with the listing process.

“So we’ve decided to wait for the new board to be appointed and once that is done, we will continue through the process. The prospectus is ready, so we are good to go from our side,” Amprofi stated.

Electrochem’s 41,000-acre Ada Songhor salt mine has the potential to meet salt demand across Africa, provided it secures the necessary capital. One of the key conditions for MIIF’s investment in the company is its listing on the GSE, which is expected to raise an additional $25 million through cumulative preference shares that will convert into equity at the end of the IPO.

Following the tour, MIIF’s Acting Chief Executive, Justina Nelson, expressed confidence in Electrochem’s potential and reiterated the government’s commitment to facilitating its listing and securing the required funding.

“This is a viable project for the country, and this tour is timely because MIIF has a stake in Electrochem. So having assumed office, it is just proper that I take this tour. We want to intensify our royalty collections in not only Electrochem but all the mineral resource companies we have a stake in.

“We had a lot of behind-the-scenes discussions to ensure that they [Electrochem] list on the Ghana Stock Exchange to be able to generate dividends for the government and people of Ghana,” she disclosed.

As of the end of 2024, MIIF’s total investment in Electrochem stood at GH¢363 million. However, the company requires approximately $445 million to finalize engineering works, acquire vessels, and construct a salt refinery to add value to its product before export.

National Security denies taking money or jewelry from Dr. Addison’s home

National Security has refuted claims that its operatives took cash or valuables during a raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison.

The operation, carried out on Wednesday, March 19, led to the discovery of empty money storage boxes at his Roman Ridge home.

According to National Security officials, the raid was conducted based on intelligence suggesting that Dr. Addison was in possession of funds belonging to the central bank. They stated that the operation was lawful, backed by a search warrant, and executed in line with standard procedures.

As part of their investigative process, operatives also retrieved the hard drive from Dr. Addison’s CCTV system, a move they described as routine. Addressing allegations of theft, a National Security source firmly dismissed the accusations.

“We did not take any money or jewelry from Dr. Addison’s home. We will, in due course, make public a full list of items retrieved during the search,” the source told 3News.com.

The search has since sparked heated political reactions, with the Minority in Parliament condemning it as part of a disturbing pattern of security raids targeting former government officials.

The controversy deepened with the reported arrest and subsequent release of journalist Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah on the same day. The raid on Dr. Addison’s home also follows a similar operation conducted by National Security at the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta on February 11, 2025.

In response, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged President John Mahama to put an end to what he calls politically motivated security actions.

“President John Dramani Mahama, please leave a legacy. Let it be said that even if there were excesses in the exercise of executive power when you had the opportunity, you changed it for good. Own that legacy in your name. We are tired of the intimidation, the attacks, and the hypocrisy,” he stated.

MTN Ghana, Nigeria’s cross-border payment and matters arising

MTN Ghana and MTN Nigeria have introduced a cross-border payment feature on the MTN MoMo platform, enabling seamless money transfers between the two countries.

This innovation allows users in Ghana and Nigeria to send and receive funds directly into their local MoMo wallets, eliminating the need for third-party remittance services.

With this feature, transactions are expected to become faster, more convenient, and cost-effective, particularly benefiting traders, families, and businesses that frequently move money across borders. The initiative reinforces MTN’s position as a leader in mobile money services and promotes greater financial connectivity in Africa.

The Independent Ghana tested the cross-border transaction process, which involves:

    1. Dialling *170# on an MTN line
    2. Selecting option 1 (Transfer Money)
    3. Choosing option 7 (Cross Border Payment)
    4. Entering the recipient’s country code (+233 for Ghana or +234 for Nigeria) and completing the transaction.

However, the initiative has sparked regulatory concerns. Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam George, has clarified that the Bank of Ghana has not granted MTN a license for cross-border mobile money transactions.

“I have received several frantic calls from players in Ghana’s fintech ecosystem deeply worried about a statement circulating today that MTN Ghana and MTN Nigeria have commenced cross-border payments,” George stated in a social media post.

“Despite our commitment to a seamless and inclusive financial ecosystem, there are regulations for the industry. My checks with the Bank of Ghana indicate that no such licence has been issued for cross-border payments,” he added.

He assured that his ministry would work with stakeholders to support innovation while ensuring compliance with financial regulations.

“We would work with all stakeholders as the Ministry for Digital Technology to ensure a favourable ecosystem that protects investments, supports innovation, and offers the best products to our citizens,” he affirmed.

This development has raised questions about regulatory oversight, particularly in light of the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723), which prohibits transactions in foreign currency within Ghana without proper authorization. Violators could face fines or imprisonment, reinforcing the need for financial service providers to operate within legal frameworks.

As the discussion unfolds, industry players and regulatory bodies are expected to engage further to clarify the status of MTN’s cross-border payment service and its implications for Ghana’s financial sector.

Ernest Addison’s cash, wife’s jewellery were taken during raid – Afenyo-Markin alleges

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused National Security operatives of stealing valuables, including cash and jewellery, during a raid on the private residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, March 20, Afenyo-Markin alleged that the operatives, led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, unlawfully seized an undisclosed sum of cedis from Dr. Addison’s bedroom. Additionally, earrings and necklaces belonging to the former governor’s wife were reportedly missing after the operation.

“Some GHC10,000 on his bed could not be found. So some of these hungry party foot soldiers they use, who parade themselves as National Security operatives, are after all perhaps not being paid, and they use this opportunity to steal,” he stated.

“The governor’s wife’s earrings and necklaces were also not traced. They couldn’t be found. In other words, those operatives stole these earrings and necklaces. Ghana is a matured democracy, and we should do better.”

The raid, which took place at Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge residence in Accra, has raised serious concerns about the conduct of security personnel under the new administration. Eyewitnesses reported that heavily armed officers, some wearing balaclavas and carrying AK-47 rifles, disabled the home’s CCTV system before conducting their search.

Afenyo-Markin further pointed out that this was not an isolated incident, recalling a similar operation at the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in February 2025. He urged civil society organizations and human rights groups to condemn what he described as a disturbing pattern of political persecution.

As of now, the government and National Security Secretariat have yet to respond to the allegations. However, demands for an independent investigation into the raid and the reported misconduct of security operatives continue to grow.

Roads Minister, COCOBOD CEO engage to address funding stalled cocoa roads projects

Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Agbodza, and the Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Dr. Ransford Abbey, have met to explore sustainable funding solutions for stalled cocoa roads projects across the country.

The high-level discussions, held earlier today, focused on securing financial resources to complete critical road infrastructure in cocoa-growing regions.

As a key outcome of the meeting, a joint technical committee has been established, comprising experts from both the Ministry of Roads and Highways and COCOBOD. The committee has been tasked with rationalizing the cocoa roads portfolio, assessing outstanding commitments, and determining COCOBOD’s financial exposure regarding these projects.

The committee is expected to submit a comprehensive report within three weeks, detailing recommendations on resource allocation and strategies for the completion of ongoing and stalled cocoa roads projects.

This rationalization process will include a thorough review of financial commitments and measures to ensure efficient use of available funds, providing a clear roadmap for addressing infrastructure deficits in cocoa-growing areas.

Hon. Kwame Agbodza reaffirmed the government’s dedication to delivering quality road infrastructure, emphasizing its importance to economic growth in cocoa-producing communities.

“Improving road access in these regions is crucial for boosting productivity, ensuring smooth transportation of cocoa produce, and ultimately contributing to Ghana’s economic growth,” he stated.

This initiative is expected to accelerate the completion of vital road networks, enhancing accessibility and supporting the nation’s cocoa industry.

President John Dramani Mahama has assured the Black Stars that he will be watching their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad, despite acknowledging the emotional strain that live football puts on him.

Mahama made this revelation during a visit to the team’s training session at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, ahead of their upcoming fixtures against Chad and Madagascar.

“I will take time off and watch the game myself. Even though my heart is not very good at watching soccer, I will brave it [to watch you on Friday],” he told the players.

  • Okatakyie Afrifa released from NIB custody

Okatakyie Afrifa released from NIB custody

Media personality Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah has been freed after spending hours in the custody of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), following his arrest on Wednesday, March 19.

His detention sparked widespread criticism from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and advocates for media freedom.

Afrifa Mensah, known for hosting the social media show “FOR THE RECORDS,” was reportedly picked up by security operatives, triggering a strong backlash from opposition leaders and press freedom activists.

The NPP condemned the arrest, describing it as an assault on democratic principles and press liberties. Party General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua issued a scathing rebuke, demanding his immediate release.

“The arrest of Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah by the NDC government is a dangerous attack on democracy and freedom of speech! Ghana must not descend into tyranny,” Kodua declared.

Effutu MP and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin also weighed in on the issue, criticizing the government’s approach toward dissenting voices.

“It started with Abronye. Now it’s Okatakyie Afrifa. The NDC government must be tolerant. Using State Security to intimidate opponents is not good for our democracy!” he warned.

Amid mounting public outcry and a growing online campaign demanding his freedom, Afrifa Mensah was eventually released later that evening.

Confirming his release, NPP National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye denounced the arrest as unjustified and excessive.

“We have just left the premises of National Security, and it is very disappointing to say that the arrest of Okatakyie Afrifa after his exams this evening was completely unnecessary and unwarranted. Thanks to the efforts of several individuals who intervened, he has been released. Free speech cannot be suppressed under the guise of an investigation. If that is the case, then National Security should be prepared to arrest all of us,” Boakye stated in a Facebook post.

Afrifa Mensah’s detention and subsequent release have reignited discussions about press freedom and the role of security agencies in handling dissenting opinions.

Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah must be released now – Afenyo-Markin demands

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for the immediate release of controversial broadcaster Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, who has reportedly been arrested by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).

In a strongly worded statement on X, Afenyo-Markin condemned the arrest, linking it to previous actions taken against political figures.

“It started with Abronye. Now it’s Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah. The NDC Government must be tolerant! Using State Security to intimidate opponents is not good for our democracy! Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah must be released now!!!,” he wrote.

Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah was allegedly picked up by NIB operatives on Wednesday evening at Mile 7, Achimota. The reason for his arrest remains unclear, but the development has sparked concerns among opposition members and media circles.

    https://twitter.com/AfenyoMarkin/status/1902476494569664752

The National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, widely known as Nana B, confirmed Okatakyie’s arrest in a post on Facebook, further fueling discussions on the motive behind the move.

This comes in the wake of another high-profile case involving the NIB, which recently summoned NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye. He was called to appear before the bureau on February 26 over allegations against former President John Mahama, accusing him of withholding GH₵550 million meant for dismissed appointees at the Jubilee House.

With rising concerns over perceived political intimidation, Afenyo-Markin’s demand has added to the growing pressure on authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah’s arrest and ensure transparency in security operations.

Afenyo-Markin pays visit to ex-BoG Governor after raid at his residence

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has visited former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, following a controversial raid on his residence by National Security operatives.

The early morning operation, which took place on Wednesday, March 19, at Roman Ridge, reportedly saw a team of heavily armed men storming Dr. Addison’s home while he was present.

Sources indicate that around 5 a.m., about 15 soldiers arrived in three separate vehicles, forcefully entered the premises, and disabled the CCTV system before demanding access to alleged “vaults” within the house.

Dr. Addison, however, firmly denied having any hidden vaults or cash on his property. Despite his denial, the operatives ransacked his home, leaving it in disarray. When their search proved fruitless, they called in National Security drivers to remove four of his vehicles, leaving only two behind. Before leaving, they also confiscated the CCTV monitor and control unit.

Later in the evening, the family was reportedly instructed to retrieve the seized vehicles, which had been parked opposite Jokers Club in Labadi. The incident has left Dr. Addison and his family shaken, sparking widespread concern and condemnation.

The operation is said to have been led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat. His involvement has further fueled discussions on the legality and intent of such operations.

This development comes just weeks after a similar raid on the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta on February 11, 2025. In that case, a group of 12 individuals, including nine military personnel and plainclothes officers, allegedly entered Mr. Ofori-Atta’s home without prior notice or a warrant while he was out of the country for medical treatment. He later described the incident as deeply distressing for his household staff and damaging to his reputation.

With concerns growing over these high-profile raids, Afenyo-Markin’s visit underscores the political and legal implications of such operations. Many are now calling for further investigations into the motives behind these actions and the extent of National Security’s authority in conducting such operations.

Ghana, Sierra Leone agree to revitalise joint cooperation agreement initially signed in 2018

Ghana and Sierra Leone have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties by reviving a joint cooperation agreement originally signed in 2018.

This was the key outcome of a meeting between Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, and Sierra Leone’s President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, during Mahama’s one-day working visit to Freetown on Tuesday.

Their discussions covered a range of strategic areas, including trade, education, investment, and institutional support. Emphasizing the need to deepen collaboration between the two nations, President Mahama noted that both leaders were aligned in their vision for progress.

“We agreed to revitalise the joint cooperation agreement initially signed in 2018, with a proposal to hold the inaugural meeting here in Ghana soon! We shared our commitment to meeting the aspirations of our citizens and ensuring progress in key sectors,” Mahama stated.

Beyond bilateral issues, the two leaders also tackled broader regional concerns, including terrorism, conflict, and drug trafficking. They reaffirmed their commitment to working together and with other West African nations to address these threats and mitigate their impact on the region.

Additionally, Mahama and Bio discussed ways to enhance the West African Power Pool to improve power generation and distribution across the region.

During his visit, President Mahama also engaged with members of the Ghanaian community in Sierra Leone, listening to their concerns, particularly regarding work permits and taxation. He assured them that these issues would be addressed to improve their living and working conditions.

With plans in place to reignite the 2018 cooperation agreement, Ghana and Sierra Leone are set to build stronger ties and pursue mutual development in the years ahead.

In 2017, Ghana and Sierra Leone agreed to ratify the agreement for cooperation between the two countries, so as to provide the legal framework for addressing their trade and investment concerns.

Despite the good relations that existed between the two countries, there was no framework for cooperation to guide these relations. This development hampered the deepening of bilateral ties and cooperation amongst the two countries.

To this end, then President Akufo-Addo assured that “I will pursue this matter with my Parliament to ensure the ratification of this Agreement”, an agreement that was signed between the two countries on 19th December, 2013, but which was yet to be ratified.

Fix the corruption happening at the School Feeding Programme – Adwoa Safo entreats govt

Former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Adwoa Safo, has called on the government to take decisive action against corruption in Ghana’s School Feeding Programme, warning that mismanagement is crippling the initiative’s effectiveness.

Speaking on Wontumi TV on Wednesday, March 19, the former Dome/Kwabenya Member of Parliament urged the current administration to conduct a thorough review of the programme, which was initially introduced to improve student nutrition and boost school enrollment.

“The rot and the corruption that is going on at the school feeding sector is serious. This government should pay attention to that sector. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor had a great vision around the school feeding programme, but the way it has been twisted is a serious matter,” she stated.

Reflecting on her time in office, Adwoa Safo disclosed that President Nana Akufo-Addo had tasked her with auditing the programme before releasing funds to her ministry. However, she alleged that the findings of her report sparked resistance within the government, leading the President to abandon the directive.

“The majority of the rot was coming from the Central Region. The backlash that followed my submission of the audit report made President Akufo-Addo deny that he had asked me to conduct it. He told me to set it aside, and that’s where my problems began,” she claimed.

Adwoa Safo also recounted how key officials in the programme obstructed her efforts to investigate financial irregularities.

“When I was appointed as the Gender Minister, President Akufo-Addo asked me to conduct an audit of the school feeding programme before I would be granted revenue to operate. What was all the money allocated to the programme being used for? I would call this woman—a key official in the programme—once, twice, even three times, and she wouldn’t respond. Instead, she would send a message saying she wasn’t happy with how I was handling her because she had connections in the government and at higher authorities,” she alleged.

Her revelations have reignited calls for urgent reforms in the School Feeding Programme, with growing concerns over accountability and transparency in its administration.

Akufo-Addo asked me to set aside audit report on school feeding programme after backlash – Adwoa Safo alleges

Former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Adwoa Safo, has claimed that former President Nana Akufo-Addo withdrew his support for an audit into the school feeding programme after facing internal pressure.

Speaking on Wontumi TV on Wednesday, March 19, the former Dome/Kwabenya Member of Parliament alleged that corruption and mismanagement have severely undermined the programme, which was originally designed to provide meals for students in public schools.

She called on the government of President John Dramani Mahama to take urgent steps to reform the initiative, warning that unchecked corruption is draining resources.

“The rot and the corruption that is going on at the school feeding sector is serious. This government should pay attention to that sector. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor had a great vision around the school feeding programme, but the way it has been twisted is a serious matter,” she stated.

Recounting her tenure, Adwoa Safo revealed that former President Akufo-Addo had instructed her to conduct an audit of the programme before funds were disbursed to her ministry. However, after she submitted the report to Cabinet, the President distanced himself from the findings due to mounting pressure from individuals within his own administration.

“The majority of the rot was coming from the Central Region. The backlash that followed my submission of the audit report made President Akufo-Addo deny that he had asked me to conduct it. He told me to set it aside, and that’s where my problems began,” she claimed.

According to her, attempts to investigate financial mismanagement were met with resistance from key officials within the school feeding programme.

Her remarks have reignited calls for greater transparency in the management of the school feeding programme, which has been plagued by allegations of financial mismanagement and inefficiencies over the years.

Meanwhile, the former president and the individuals cited by the former legislator are yet to react to the claims.

  • “This is a fight we must win for the future of our nation” – Environment Minister on galamsey

“This is a fight we must win for the future of our nation” – Environment Minister on galamsey

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating illegal mining, with the Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad, declaring that the battle against galamsey is non-negotiable.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, March 19, he emphasized that tackling illegal mining is not just an environmental issue but a national security priority.

“This is a fight we must win for the future of our nation,” he declared, stressing that all individuals involved—whether political figures or not—would face the full force of the law.

He compared galamsey to an act of terrorism, warning that its destructive impact on water bodies, farmlands, and communities would no longer be tolerated.

The press briefing followed the government’s decision to revoke all small-scale mining licenses issued after December 7, 2024. This move comes in response to a report submitted by a Technical Committee established by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology.

The committee was tasked with reviewing the current small-scale mining licensing regime and proposing reforms to curb illegal mining.

Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, outlined some of the key recommendations in the report, which include a major restructuring of the Community Mining Scheme, decentralizing the issuance of small-scale mining licenses, and repealing LI 2462—a law granting the President the power to approve mining activities in forest reserves.

“The report has armed the ministry, and by extension the government, with all the information necessary to make punitive and radical decisions in the small-scale mining sector,” Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah stated. He commended the committee for its diligent work, describing its findings as a crucial blueprint in the government’s fight against illegal mining.

Among the most significant recommendations is the dissolution of the current Community Mining Schemes, which the committee found to be ineffective in delivering benefits to local communities. In their place, the government will establish Small-Scale Cooperatives, which will be structured to ensure proper community representation and economic empowerment.

“Existing Community Mining Schemes exist in name only,” the minister pointed out. “The findings show they are not benefiting the communities as intended. They will be disbanded and replaced with cooperatives formed through due diligence and proper community representation.”

Hon. Murtala Muhammad echoed the urgency of the government’s mission, underscoring the need for a coordinated approach involving all relevant ministries and stakeholders. He noted that comprehensive reports such as this provide a strong foundation for designing sustainable strategies to combat illegal mining.

“Comprehensive reports like this are essential to streamline our measures against the galamsey menace,” he stated. He assured the public that the government would take decisive action to prevent further environmental destruction and hold all perpetrators accountable, regardless of their political affiliation.

  • DCOP Lydia Donkor appointed CID Director-General

DCOP Lydia Donkor appointed CID Director-General

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor has been named the new Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

Her appointment comes as part of an ongoing restructuring effort led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno to strengthen the leadership of the service.

With this new role, DCOP Donkor will be responsible for overseeing major criminal investigations, including the high-profile murder case of Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, a dedicated Asante Kotoko fan.

Before her appointment, she was serving as the Head of the Security Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), where she played a key role in handling security-related matters within Ghanaian football. She had previously led investigations into Nana Pooley’s tragic murder, a case that placed her at odds with Asante Kotoko’s management.

During her inquiry, DCOP Donkor disputed claims that the incident took place inside the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, countering the club’s initial reports.

“This unfortunate incident did not occur inside the stadium; it happened outside. He was later picked up by a tricycle and dropped at a section of the stadium. I must clarify this, as there are comments suggesting the police allowed someone to enter the stadium with a knife. Let me state that the police enforce a strict search regime,” she stated.

She further noted that if the victim had felt threatened, he should have alerted the police or someone nearby.

Her findings were met with strong opposition from Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee (IMC), with its chairman, Nana Apinkra, publicly expressing dissatisfaction with her handling of the case. He announced plans to escalate the matter to then-IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and called for her removal from the investigation.

“We will officially report DCOP Lydia Donkor to the IGP, and we want the GFA to remove her from the case because she was appointed by them,” he stated in an executive meeting streamed live on YouTube.

Meanwhile, the main suspect in the case, identified as Brimah, remains on the run, as law enforcement continues its search to bring him to justice.

The 12-member Adwumawura Technical Working Group and the 14-member National Apprenticeship Technical Working Group have been tasked with ensuring the effective rollout of these initiatives, aimed at creating sustainable employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for young Ghanaians.

At the inauguration ceremony in Accra on Wednesday, March 19, Minister George Opare Addo urged the committees to fast-track the implementation of these programmes to address the growing challenge of youth unemployment. He also directed them to submit a detailed report on their progress within two weeks.

“This Adwumawura programme aims to empower 10,000 Ghanaians every year between the ages of 18 and 35 and to also help them launch their businesses, effectively lowering the employment rate among our young people. Through this programme, we are committed to contributing with the necessary support, in terms of training, financing, and special opportunities to make young entrepreneurs realize their dreams,” Opare Addo stated.

7 forest reserves reclaimed from illegal miners – Lands Minister

The government has successfully reclaimed seven out of nine forest reserves that had been completely taken over by illegal miners, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has announced.

Addressing the press in Accra, the minister disclosed that a coordinated security operation, involving the military, police, and the Forestry Commission’s rapid response unit, was instrumental in recovering the reserves over the past month.

“I’m proud to tell you, with the cooperation of the security agencies and the military, we have taken back seven of these nine forests, and we are working very hard to ensure that the remaining two are fully reclaimed,” he stated.

He revealed that the operation resulted in the seizure of at least 60 excavators, a significant move in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The minister assured the public that efforts were ongoing to recover the remaining two reserves, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting the country’s natural resources.

“Everything possible is being done to reclaim the remaining two forest reserves,” he affirmed.

Commending the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence for their support, he also urged citizens to actively participate in safeguarding the environment by promoting responsible mining practices.

In February, the minister informed Parliament that more than nine forest reserves had fallen under the control of illegal miners, making them inaccessible to authorities. He further revealed that illegal mining activities had led to the destruction of approximately 5,000 hectares of land—equivalent to about 7,000 football fields.

  • Small-scale mining licences issued after December 7 revoked

Small-scale mining licences issued after December 7 revoked

The government has revoked all small-scale mining licences granted after December 7, 2024, due to procedural lapses in their issuance.

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, announced the decision during a joint press briefing on March 19, 2025, emphasizing the need for regulatory compliance in the sector.

“Now, we are going full steam ahead to revoke all licences based on the findings. Even all licences—it’s mostly licences that were issued from December 7—that is hereby revoked, whether you have EPA licences or not, because the finding is very clear. Those licences from December 7 were rushed. Review processes were not followed; the right things were not done,” Mr. Buah stated.

The move follows recommendations from key regulatory institutions, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Forestry Commission, and the Water Resources Commission. Authorities say the decision aligns with the government’s broader crackdown on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, which has contributed to environmental degradation.

Under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which was passed in November 2022 during the tenure of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, the government had the authority to issue mining licences in forest reserves. During his administration, over 2,100 mining-related permits were granted, including a sharp increase of 318 licences in the final week of his presidency. The law faced heavy criticism for allegedly facilitating environmental destruction tied to unregulated mining activities.

With the revocation now in effect, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is expected to implement stricter measures to ensure that future mining permits adhere to due process and environmental guidelines.

Suspect in Ahmed Suale murder cases remanded in custody

A key suspect in the murder of undercover journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale has been remanded by the Madina Magistrates’ Court as investigations into the high-profile case intensify.

Daniel Owusu Koranteng, Managing Director of ISPY Company and known by the alias Akwase Amakye, is facing a provisional charge of murder. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a case that has long raised concerns over journalist safety in Ghana.

Hussein-Suale, a member of the Tiger Eye PI investigative team, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen near his residence in Madina on January 16, 2019. His work, particularly a joint exposé with the BBC on corruption in African football, is believed to have made him a target.

Koranteng’s arrest follows an extensive investigation involving the FBI and local law enforcement agencies. Police prosecutors disclosed in court that phone records indicated communication between Koranteng and Hussein-Suale shortly before the killing. Additionally, evidence suggests Koranteng was in the vicinity of the crime scene on the night of the incident.

Further complicating the case, prosecutors revealed that Koranteng had admitted to taking photographs of the journalist but denied selling them to politician Kennedy Agyapong. Agyapong had previously displayed Hussein-Suale’s images on national television, calling on the public to attack him if spotted. According to the prosecution, Hussein-Suale’s lawyer identified Koranteng as the individual responsible for providing those photographs to Agyapong.

Koranteng’s lawyer, Kofi Essel, dismissed the accusations, describing the murder charge as “shambolic” and insisting that the allegations lacked solid evidence. He argued for his client’s release on bail, questioning whether the sale of photographs alone could serve as sufficient grounds for a murder charge.

Magistrate Suzzy Nyakotey adjourned the case to April 1 to allow further investigations. Authorities remain hopeful that Koranteng’s detention will lead to further revelations and bring justice to the slain journalist.

Grand Chateaux Sangria Forte recalled by FDA over safety issues

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has announced the immediate recall of Grand Chateaux Sangria Forte, specifically the Tetra Pak (250ml) and Canned (330ml Pétillante) variants, citing regulatory breaches and safety concerns.

According to the FDA, these products were being sold on the Ghanaian market and promoted on social media without proper registration, in violation of Sections 97, 98, and 103 of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851). The law mandates that all food and beverage products undergo regulatory approval before distribution.

In a statement, the regulator emphasized that the sale and circulation of these beverages were illegal and posed potential risks to consumers.

Additionally, the FDA noted that the packaging and size of the products were misleading and could increase the risk of accidental alcohol consumption by children.

To prevent any health hazards, the authority has directed all retailers and wholesalers to immediately stop selling and distributing the affected products. Consumers have also been strongly advised against purchasing or consuming them.

The FDA has instructed that all stocks be returned to the nearest outlets of Cave and Garden Ghana Limited or any FDA office nationwide. The importer has been sanctioned, and regulatory measures are being enforced to ensure compliance.

Reaffirming its commitment to public health and safety, the FDA has urged the public to report any continued sale of these recalled products through its official communication channels.

  • Falsehood and character assassination have no place in our society – Anas

Falsehood and character assassination have no place in our society – Anas

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has declared that falsehood and character assassination must not be tolerated in any society, following his legal victory in the Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey.

The court found Ghanaian politician Kennedy Agyapong guilty of defamation, ordering him to pay $18 million in damages.

Anas, known for his undercover exposés on corruption, emphasized that the ruling was not just a personal triumph but a significant stand against misinformation and reputational attacks.

“This decision is not merely a legal triumph—it is a resounding affirmation that falsehood and character assassination have no place in our society,” he stated.

The lawsuit stemmed from statements made by Agyapong in the aftermath of the BBC documentary Betraying the Game, which was released on October 28, 2018. Agyapong had accused Anas of misconduct, allegations the journalist said were baseless and intended to tarnish his credibility.

The jury’s unanimous decision underscored the high bar required to prove defamation in the U.S., something Anas highlighted as a crucial aspect of the case.

“Proving defamation in the United States is an exceptionally high hurdle, requiring clear and convincing evidence of malice,” he noted. “That the jury ruled unanimously in my favour underscores that Mr. Agyapong acted both maliciously and recklessly in his attacks against me.”

Drawing a stark comparison, Anas pointed to his failed defamation case against Agyapong in Ghana, where the court dismissed his claims despite Agyapong’s admission of lacking evidence to support his accusations.

“In Ghana, justice eluded me,” Anas lamented. “Despite Mr. Agyapong’s own admission of lacking evidence to support his calumnious claims, Justice Eric Baah of the Accra High Court not only denied me justice but also unjustly portrayed me—the civil plaintiff—as a criminal.”

He further cited Ghanaian Supreme Court Justice Kulendi’s critique of the ruling, labeling it a “violent abuse of judicial authority.”

According to Anas, the outcome of the U.S. case served as a reminder of the disparities between legal systems and highlighted the need for judicial reforms in Ghana.

“In contrast, the proceedings in New Jersey demonstrated fairness and accountability,” he said. “Despite presenting the same Who Watches the Watchman evidence and even citing the Ghanaian judgment, Mr. Agyapong’s defence collapsed before the weight of truth.”

With the verdict in his favor, Anas issued a strong warning to politicians who seek to undermine journalists and the media.

“Today’s outcome sends a powerful message, particularly to Ghanaian politicians: you cannot take the media for granted,” he declared. “The press plays an indispensable role in scrutinizing power and holding leaders accountable, and any attempt to undermine this essential function will be met with resolute resistance.”

Anas also extended gratitude to his legal team, led by Andrew Deheer, Esq., and to those who supported him throughout the legal battle. As he awaits the determination of punitive damages, he reaffirmed his dedication to his anti-corruption mission.

“The fight against corruption continues unabated,” he asserted. “We will persist in rooting out graft and holding accountable the bad actors in our society.”

His victory has reignited discussions on press freedom, judicial integrity, and the role of political influence in shaping public narratives.

Ghana’s economic growth fueled by digitalisation – Gideon Boako

Tano North Member of Parliament, Dr Gideon Boako, has highlighted the significant role digitalisation is playing in driving Ghana’s economic growth, shifting away from traditional revenue sources like cocoa, gold, and oil.

Contributing to the debate on the 2025 budget statement, Dr Boako pointed out that recent data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) shows an unprecedented shift in the country’s economic trajectory.

“Mr Speaker, throughout my formative years, I was taught that the backbone of Ghana’s economy was cocoa, gold, and later oil. For years, we struggled to find a way to properly diversify beyond these resources,” he noted.

According to Dr Boako, the GSS report indicates that in 2024, Ghana’s economy expanded by a record GHC1.2 trillion in nominal terms. Unlike in the past, this growth was not primarily fueled by traditional exports but by digital transactions, including data and SMS services.

“For the first time, the massive growth recorded in 2024 did not come from cocoa, gold, or oil but was driven by data and SMS transactions—that is, digitalisation,” he explained.

He described this shift as a turning point in Ghana’s economic development, underscoring the increasing influence of technology and digital services.

Dr Boako credited the digital transformation to the policies of the previous administration, particularly the efforts of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Mr Speaker, digitalisation efforts championed by the former Vice President over the last eight years have significantly contributed to this economic growth, and he must be commended,” he stated.

His remarks emphasize the growing impact of digital infrastructure and technology in shaping Ghana’s future economy, marking a departure from reliance on natural resources.

  • Transport fares will be reduced if fuel prices drop to GHC12 per litre – GPRTU

Transport fares will be reduced if fuel prices drop to GHC12 per litre – GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has assured commuters that transport fares will be reduced if fuel prices drop to GHC12 per litre.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, March 18, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, addressed public concerns about the recent dip in fuel prices and why it has not yet led to a fare reduction.

“Before December, we were already considering increasing transport fares due to the high cost of spare parts, rising fuel prices, expensive lubricants, insurance, and DVLA taxes,” Amoah explained. “But we decided to hold on because we had been promised that things would get better.”

While acknowledging the recent fuel price reduction, he emphasized that it is not yet significant enough to warrant an adjustment in fares.

“Yes, we have seen the fuel price coming down a little bit, but it has not gotten to the level where it will call for a reduction in transport fares,” he stated.

According to Mr. Amoah, fare adjustments depend on several economic factors, not just fuel prices.

“We normally have a 10% threshold that we check on. We assess where the fuel price was and where it has gotten to, but we also consider other components like spare parts, lubricants, and various taxes,” he noted. “When deciding to either increase or reduce fares, our team goes to the market to assess these factors before making recommendations.”

He recalled the last time transport fares were increased and the fuel price at the time.

“If we check the previous time we increased transport fares, fuel prices were around GHC12 per litre, if I’m not mistaken. Now, diesel is about GHC15.49, and petrol is around GHC14.99,” he pointed out. “We are praying that fuel prices drop to at least GHC12 per litre. If that happens, we will reassess the situation.”

However, he cautioned that even if fuel prices decline, the high cost of spare parts remains a significant concern.

“Looking at where spare parts prices are now, it will be difficult for us to reduce transport fares immediately,” he added.

  • Ransacking homes over murder of soldier in Bawku unjustifiable – Mahama Ayariga

Ransacking homes over murder of soldier in Bawku unjustifiable – Mahama Ayariga

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has criticized the military over reported brutalities inflicted on civilians in Bawku on Tuesday, in response to the murder of an officer.

While acknowledging the tragic loss of the military officer, Mr Ayariga insisted that retaliatory attacks on innocent civilians were unjustifiable.

Per reports, women, children, and elderly residents have been subjected to all sorts of maltreatment. The legislator is demanding full accountability from the military regarding their conduct.

“I regret the accidental killing of a military personnel and I condemn that dastardly act,” he stated. “However, ransacking homes, beating innocent civilians, and holding the entire town to ransom cannot be justified. The rule of law must prevail, and those responsible for maintaining order should never engage in such acts of violence.”

Mr Ayariga who doubles as the Majority Leader in Parliament called on the military leadership and local authorities to collaborate in investigating the killing of the soldier rather than resorting to what he described as indiscriminate aggression.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved family of the fallen soldier and urged restraint on all sides.

Expressing disappointment that his earlier appeals for the military to act with caution were ignored, he lamented, “I regret that the military command did not heed my appeal not to react violently, and they went ahead to do what they did. We need to work together to restore peace.”

Looking ahead, Mr Ayariga expressed hope that all parties involved in the Bawku conflict would trust in the peace mediation efforts led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II.

“I have confidence that all sides will repose trust in His Majesty the Asantehene to bring finality to the situation in Bawku and end the violence we are experiencing,” he stated.

The MP reiterated his commitment to advocating for peace and ensuring that justice is served for the victims of both the initial attack and the military’s response.

Commercial bus rams into traders in Kumasi; one dead, 3 in critical condition

Four traders have been involved in a gruesome accident after a commercial bus, popularly known as a trotro, lost control and plowed into them at the Dr. Mensah Station in Kumasi.

The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, March 18, was reportedly caused by brake failure, sending the vehicle careening off the road and into a cluster of roadside stalls.

According to reports, the life of one trader has been lost, while three others remain in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene as pedestrians scrambled for safety while the bus barreled through the busy trading area. Some bystanders rushed to rescue the injured before emergency responders arrived.

The victims sustained severe injuries and were quickly transported to the Manhyia Government Hospital, where medical staff are working to stabilize the survivors.

  • Govt deploys drones, military to combat Walewale highway attacks

Govt deploys drones, military to combat Walewale highway attacks

Government has intensified security efforts along the Walewale-Bolgatanga Highway by deploying military personnel and drones to curb rising attacks on passenger buses.

Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, made this known in Parliament on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, while responding to concerns raised by the Member of Parliament for Walewale regarding escalating robberies and vehicle burnings in the North East Region.

According to Mr. Muntaka Mubarak, although Walewale has seen a steady decline in armed robbery cases—from 30 incidents in 2022 to 18 in 2024—the attacks targeting passenger buses remain a pressing concern.

He linked the recent surge in highway violence to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict, explaining that the unrest was spilling over into surrounding areas and contributing to insecurity along the route.

To address the situation, the government imposed a curfew on Walewale and its environs on February 15, 2025, while also reinforcing security operations in the area.

In addition to the military deployment, extra police officers have been dispatched from Tamale to support the Walewale District Command. The government has also increased logistical support, including the provision of more patrol vehicles.

Furthermore, three police bases have been established in Walewale, Janga, and Gombiliga, each manned by 30 officers to enhance security patrols. To protect traders, police escorts have been introduced for market women traveling to and from Walewale’s markets.

Despite these interventions, Mr. Muntaka Mubarak acknowledged that no arrests had been made in connection with this year’s robbery incidents. He noted that tracking suspects had been challenging due to the widespread use of motorbikes in the area but remained optimistic about the impact of the new surveillance measures.

“I will continue engaging the police, and with drone surveillance now in place, I believe we will see improvements. But as of now, I have no information on arrests,” he said.

Authorities remain hopeful that these enhanced security measures will restore safety along the highway and deter further attacks.

Ghana engages Inida in a partnership for agriculture and infrastructure development

Ghana has initiated talks with India to strengthen cooperation in agricultural technology and infrastructure development, aiming to drive economic growth and sustainable progress.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, emphasized Ghana’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with India during his visit to the country. Engaging with his Indian counterpart, His Excellency Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on March 17, he highlighted the importance of leveraging India’s expertise to modernize Ghana’s key sectors.

“Ghana is eager to collaborate with India in leveraging expertise in agricultural technology and infrastructure development. Our partnership will open new opportunities for knowledge exchange and investment,” he stated.

He pointed out that Ghana is particularly keen on tapping into India’s advancements in irrigation systems, mechanization, and food processing to enhance agricultural productivity. Additionally, he stressed the need for infrastructure development in road construction, energy, and urban planning.

“India’s experience in these sectors is invaluable, and we look forward to deepening our cooperation to enhance Ghana’s economic transformation,” he noted.

Mr. Ablakwa’s visit follows an invitation from the Indian government, reflecting the growing interest in strengthening Ghana-India relations. He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to forging strategic partnerships that will contribute to the country’s long-term development goals.

Beyond bilateral trade and investment, the minister commended India for advocating the African Union’s (AU) inclusion in the G20, describing it as a progressive move toward global inclusivity.

“India’s commitment to promoting the African Union’s membership in the G20 is a testament to its dedication to a more inclusive and equitable global order,” he stated.

He further emphasized that Africa’s increasing economic influence makes it essential for the continent to be actively involved in shaping global economic policies.

“With Africa’s rising economic significance, it is only right that we have a seat at the table where critical global economic policies are shaped,” he remarked.

The discussions between Ghana and India signal a renewed focus on strengthening cooperation in key areas, setting the stage for enhanced trade, investment, and technology transfer between the two nations.

  • Cedi depreciated by 5.3% against the dollar as of March 14 – Finance Minister

Cedi depreciated by 5.3% against the dollar as of March 14 – Finance Minister

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has disclosed that the Ghanaian cedi has depreciated by 5.3% against the US dollar as of March 14, 2025.

He made this known while addressing Parliament on Tuesday, assuring lawmakers that the government is taking decisive steps to stabilize the local currency.

Dr. Ato Forson acknowledged the persistent depreciation of the cedi but pointed out that its performance had slightly improved compared to the same period in 2024, when it had depreciated by 5.7%.

“Mr. Speaker, as of 14th March 2025, the cedi had depreciated by 5.3% against the US dollar, compared to 5.7% over the same period in 2024,. This shows a reduction in the depreciation by 0.4%” he stated.

The minister attributed the depreciation to tight foreign exchange liquidity, high demand for forex from the energy sector, and increased commercial transactions. Despite these pressures, he noted that the cedi had shown signs of stability since February 19, 2025, largely due to interventions by the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

“Mr. Speaker, the cedi has, however, witnessed stability since 19th February, on the back of central bank forex interventions,” he emphasized.

To further strengthen the currency and curb depreciation, Dr. Ato Forson outlined government strategies, including increasing foreign exchange reserves, enhancing domestic production through import substitution, and effectively managing external debt obligations.

He assured Parliament that these initiatives would complement the Bank of Ghana’s monetary policies, helping to stabilize the economy, reduce exchange rate volatility, and boost investor confidence.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Ghana’s latest data shows that in January 2025, the cedi depreciated by 2.4% against the US dollar, a sharper decline compared to the 1.3% recorded in January 2024. By the end of January, the local currency was trading at GH¢15.06 per US dollar on the interbank market.

The cedi also weakened by 3.0% against the euro, trading at GH¢15.69, and depreciated 0.8% against the British pound, reaching GH¢18.55.

The Finance Minister has set a target to reduce the cedi’s annual depreciation rate to 8%, as part of broader efforts to restore economic stability.

Mahama in Sierra Leone for bilateral talk on trade and development

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Sierra Leone for a state visit aimed at fostering stronger economic and diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The discussions between President Mahama and his Sierra Leonean counterpart, Julius Maada Bio, are expected to focus on trade, infrastructure development, and regional cooperation. The visit seeks to deepen economic collaboration and explore new opportunities for growth.

Confirming the visit in a Facebook post on March 18, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to President Mahama, stated that both leaders would engage in high-level discussions covering economic partnerships, social infrastructure, and regional integration.

Ghana and Sierra Leone share a rich history of mutual support and development cooperation, particularly in times of crisis. In January 2025, President Bio attended Mahama’s inauguration in Accra, underscoring the strong ties between the two West African nations.

Kofi Adoma must now live with headache daily to save his eyes – Ola Kwaku Michael

Movie producer cum radio presenter Ola Kwaku Michael has provided further updates on renowned journalist Kofi Adomah Nwanwani ‘s health following an injury to the eye.

In an interview, Michael revealed that Kofi has gone under the knife seven times and is set for another. He noted that despite the surgeries, some particles of the gun powder remain in the optic nerve in Kofi’s eyes.

He stated that doctors are hesitant to tackle that, as that could render Kofi blind. According to him, this has made life unbrearable for Kofi, as he is subjected to headaches daily.

Renowned journalist Kofi Adomah Nwanwani has spoken publicly for the first time since sustaining a serious eye injury, describing the immense pain he continues to endure.

The broadcaster revealed that he has been struggling with severe headaches and constant discomfort, making it difficult for him to rest or sleep despite undergoing multiple medical treatments.

“I want to talk before anything happens. I’m in severe pain with my head aching badly, but I need to speak out before anything happens,” he said, his voice filled with emotion.

Kofi Adomah suffered the injury in December 2024 during a musketry display in Dormaa when gunpowder residue struck his eye. Despite the ordeal, he remained dedicated to his work, continuing to cover the festival before later traveling to Dubai for treatment.

However, he expressed deep disappointment over what he sees as neglect from his own people during his recovery. He also alleged that some traditional leaders in Dormaa attempted to cover up the incident to avoid public scrutiny.

“If anybody will do this to me, I didn’t expect it to come from Bono people,” he lamented.

Despite the challenges, Kofi remains grateful for his survival and extended appreciation to his family and well-wishers for their prayers and support.
