  • Russian plane forced to land in maize farm

Russian plane forced to land in maize farm

A plane from Russia with 170 people aboard had to make an emergency landing in a field of maize because something went wrong with its hydraulic system.

Nobody got hurt in the accident. The Ural Airlines Airbus A320 got stuck near a forest in the Novosibirsk region of Siberia.

Ural said that the pilot chose the place to land after the jet’s hydraulic systems stopped working while getting near Omsk.

The airline denied that it couldn’t maintain its planes because of sanctions on Russia.

The pictures showed a plane stuck in a field of corn. The doors were open and ramps were down, and there were people walking around.

A video on social media showed a big machine cutting apart a plane, removing the cockpit, tail, and wings so that it could be taken away from the field more easily.

Russia’s aviation agency, Rosaviatsia, reported that an unexpected landing occurred early on Tuesday.

It also said that they chose a place to land from the sky near the village of Kamenka. No one on board asked for medical help, it said.

Rosaviatsia stated that they are looking into the emergency landing situation, and Ural Airlines mentioned that the crew members are temporarily relieved of duty until the investigation is finished.
The leader of Ural Airlines, Sergei Skuratov, stated that a part of the plane that controls its movement and brakes stopped working while it was flying from Sochi to Omsk on the coast of the Black Sea.

He said the marks above the wing in pictures were just dirt and that the plane did not catch fire.

If a plane’s hydraulic systems have a really bad problem, it can make the plane very hard to steer and control.

However, Russian aviation experts said that there are extra systems in place and disagreed with the crew’s choice to abandon the aircraft.

“Andrei Litvinov, the pilot of the A320, told Gazeta. ru that there are three hydraulic systems and one electric system. ” “We don’t have to land the plane in a field. ”

He said that the decision put the lives of people on the plane and on the ground at risk.
Sanctions against Russia are causing problems for airlines.

The emergency landing happened because Russian airlines are having trouble getting necessary parts for their planes because of sanctions from Western countries. The sanctions are because of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

In March, a Russian media company called Vedomosti reported that Ural Airlines official Igor Poddubny said they had approximately three months left before they started taking apart planes to use their parts.

However, Skuratov insists that all the planes in his airline are fixed with real parts.

Mr Skuratov said that we will never let wrong spare parts be used. It’s hard and takes effort, but all the spare parts used on our aircraft are approved.

“I guarantee it with certainty. ”

The Interfax agency said that the A320 plane that crashed was around 20 years old and had a certificate saying it was safe to fly until the end of next year.

In August, Reuters mentioned that Ural Airlines and other Russian airlines found a way to evade Western sanctions multiple times. They used intermediaries in countries like China and the UAE, which don’t follow the restrictions.

In 2019, a Ural Airlines airplane had to land in a field near Moscow because some birds hit it while it was taking off. About 70 out of the 230 people traveling in the plane were hurt in the accident, which Russian media called the “miracle over Ramensk”.

The crew received awards from the government later on.

  • 10 foods to avoid eating in morning

10 foods to avoid eating in morning

While everyone’s dietary needs and preferences may vary, here are ten foods and drinks that some people might consider avoiding in the morning, as they can potentially lead to discomfort or have negative effects:

    1. Sugary Cereals: Highly sugared cereals can cause energy spikes and crashes, leading to mid-morning slumps.
    2. Doughnuts and Pastries: These are often loaded with sugar and unhealthy fats, providing little nutritional value.
    3. Soda: Sugary beverages can lead to a sugar rush and crash, potentially affecting your energy levels.
    4. Energy Drinks: These contain high levels of caffeine and sugar, which can cause jitters and energy crashes.
    5. Spicy Foods: Some people may find that spicy foods in the morning can lead to digestive discomfort.
    6. Processed Meats: Breakfast sausages and bacon are high in saturated fats and sodium, which may not be the healthiest choice.
    7. Excess Coffee: While a moderate amount of coffee is fine for many people, excessive caffeine can lead to restlessness and digestive issues.
    8. Fried Foods: Fried foods can be heavy and greasy, potentially leading to discomfort if consumed in the morning.
    9. Fast Food Breakfasts: Many fast food breakfast options are high in calories, sodium, and unhealthy fats.
    10. Leftover Pizza: While some people enjoy cold pizza for breakfast, it’s not the most nutritious choice due to its high-fat content.

Instead, consider starting your day with a balanced breakfast that includes a mix of lean proteins, whole grains, and fruits or vegetables. Examples might include oatmeal with berries, a yogurt parfait with granola and nuts, or scrambled eggs with vegetables. It’s essential to choose foods that provide sustained energy and essential nutrients to kickstart your day.

  • Satellite photographs show damage to grain ports in Ukraine

Satellite photographs show damage to grain ports in Ukraine

Russia has frequently targeted other export routes along the Danube River since declining to renew the agreement allowing Ukraine to ship grain over the Black Sea.

President Putin says he wants concessions from the West before lifting the Black Sea blockade, despite recent comments by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that he is convinced that Russia will restart the accord.

We have examined the grain infrastructure that has been targeted and the implications of this most recent escalation for international trade.

    What was struck?

As a result of Russia’s effective blockade of its Black Sea ports, Ukraine is highly reliant on its ports along the Danube to transport grain to neighbouring Romania.

From there, it can be transported further afield by being transported along the river to Romania’s Black Sea ports.

After frequently launching missiles and drones at Ukraine’s Black Sea export centres, Russia has now turned its attention to Danube ports like Reni and Izmail.

Recent satellite photographs of Reni port show that what appear to be grain silos at the facility have sustained substantial damage as a result of Russian attacks in the beginning of September.

This comes after prior attacks on silos, hangars, and other port buildings in July and August.

Drone assaults have also frequently hit the Zatoka bridge, a crucial link that permits grain shipments to enter Izmail by road, as well as the port of Izmail, farther to the east.

According to the local governor, the attack on Izmail on September 7 lasted three hours and targeted several buildings as well as grain loading and storage infrastructure.

Near least two storage tanks appear to have been struck, and considerable infrastructure damage can be seen near the Black Sea port of Chornomorsk in satellite photographs from July.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the location saw the destruction of 60,000 tonnes of agricultural produce.

There have been a few recent attacks on the city of Odesa, but these strikes don’t seem to have affected the trade of grain. Also, when we looked at satellite images, the port facilities of the city seemed to be undamaged.

In places where Ukraine sends exports through different routes instead of using its own Black Sea ports, there has been a lot of damage.

How has this affected the amount of goods and services being sent to other countries?

The River Danube is currently the primary pathway for Ukraine to export its grain. The grain is transported along the river to Romania and then sent to the Black Sea ports in that country, such as Constanta.

The government of Ukraine says that the recent attacks by Russia on the ports along the Danube River have caused over 270,000 tonnes of grain to be ruined.

According to Andrey Sizov, a specialist in the Black Sea agricultural markets, the cost of shipping goods from Izmail to the Constanta port in Romania increased by about 50% between early July and late August.

The recent attacks were very strong, which suggests that the rates might increase even more.

Only a few boats have used the path through the Black Sea after the grain project ended, but they didn’t carry grain.

Using a small river limits the amount of things we can send out, unlike when we use ships to send things.

“According to Mariia Bogonos, an agriculture policy expert at the Kyiv School of Economics, the end of the grain deal means that Ukraine will only be able to export a maximum of 2. 5 million tonnes of grain per month using boats, trucks, and trains. ”

In August, there were some attacks that closed the port of Reni on the Danube River. However, it seems that other ports on the river were able to start working normally again.

However, when these ports are being focused on, it leads to an increase in shipping and insurance expenses.

Romania has stated that it will try to improve other ways for Ukraine to transport its grain, using roads and trains.

Ukraine is now using Croatian ports to send out some of its grain, said Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. However, she didn’t explain exactly how much was going through this way.

The model shared excerpts of her fun times with her new partner, Yaw Yeboah, in a post on Instagram that has since been deleted.

In some scenes of the video, she can be seen encouraging him as he competes for his team, Columbus Crew, at the stadium.

She was also seen wearing a customised yellow Columbus Crew jersey with a large ink mark of his name on the back.

Prior to the game, they were also seen kissing and spending some quiet time together.

Since then, netizens have posted numerous comments on the aforementioned video.

In 2022, news of Gifty’s breakup with the Arsenal star after several years of dating spread quickly.

It was previously reported by sources that Thomas Partey smuggled her into the Black Stars camp during the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

Such assertions were refuted by Gifty Boakye in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb.

“Thomas and I’s relationship was very public and against my wishes. It all started during the AFCON scandal which was worse. It was a rumuor because I don’t have time to sneak or be smuggled into any camp or I will ever do for anyone.

“I was invited there and everyone knew I was there and it was his birthday. So some journalist took matters in his hands to write those rumuors about me when I was there in Dubai and in Egypt at the actual game. But those were rumuors we put to end after we came to Ghana,” she said.

E.L. confesses to fabricating food delivery job story for attention

Popular Ghanaian rapper and music producer, E.L., has admitted that his claim to have worked as a food delivery man in the US was merely a lie intended to garner attention.

In a recent open interview, the artist, whose real name is Elorm Adabla, admitted the truth.

It will be recalled that E.L recently made up the fact that he once had to work as a food delivery person in the US in order to make ends meet in an interview with 3Music TV.

However, the artist came clean and admitted that the story had been made up to get attention and trend during a subsequent interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz.

E.L. made it clear that while in the past he had thought about doing something like working as a delivery person, he had never actually done so.

The rapper, who once won the coveted Artiste of the Year award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), admitted to fabricating the song by saying, “I said it for the trends.”

He continued by stating that his goal had been to attract positive attention and create a buzz around his name, which appeared to have succeeded.

”Andy let me be very honest with you be my bro that whole thing ebi agenda we dey do. I no for do that thing but it’s one of those things. I was fresh off the flight and I wanted to get something trending and it did trend.”

The rapper used the interview as an opportunity to express his regret to his fans and loved ones for the publicity stunt.

  • Ukraine alleges to have retaken drilling vessels in Black Sea

Ukraine alleges to have retaken drilling vessels in Black Sea

Ukraine says it has taken back control of four gas drilling platforms in the northern Black Sea, near the Crimean Peninsula.

A video captured special forces in Ukraine removing Russian military equipment. Ukraine claims that this happened last month.

Russia took control of the Boyko Towers in 2015, right after it unlawfully took over Crimea.

There has been a fight to gain control of these important waters since last year.

A video and statement from Ukraine’s military intelligence called Battle for the Sea show a rare look into this part of the conflict.

In the video, which the BBC cannot confirm is true, there are fast boats on the Black Sea carrying Ukrainian special forces teams.

At one time, the boats go near Snake Island, also called Zmiinyi Island. Russia took control of the island during its big attack last year, but it was taken back four months later.

Then, soldiers climb onto one of the raised areas and take away Russian supplies, as well as important radar equipment.

“In the drilling platforms, the Russians created storage areas with bullets and fuel for helicopters,” explains the video commentary.

“They also put radar devices on the towers to watch what was happening in the whole Black Sea. ”

The radar, called Neva-B, was being used to help Russia see better in the important area of water between Ukraine and the Crimean Peninsula.

At one moment, the video seems to show Ukrainian soldiers trying very hard to protect themselves from a Russian Su-30 fighter jet that is flying in circles above them.

People are happy and excited because a missile that can be carried on a person’s shoulder was fired and made a plane go away.

We don’t have clear proof of more fighting, but a military intelligence spokesperson said that Russian soldiers on one of the platforms were killed.

According to the military, the mission was very intense. They had to look for a soldier named “special agent Konan” for 14 hours because he fell off the ship. Luckily, they found him thanks to a drone.

Ukraine’s version of what happened cannot be confirmed by anyone else, but on 27 August, the Ministry of Defence in Britain tweeted that there were small fights near the gas platforms.
‘Fight for power happening behind the scenes’

The Ministry of Defense said that a Russian fighter plane attacked a small Ukrainian military boat near a platform in the northwest of the sea last week.

It’s a hidden fight between two sides for control over the northern Black Sea, which both sides consider extremely important.

The military said that the platforms have important resources like oil and gas, and can be used as bases for troops, places for helicopters to land, and to set up missile systems that can reach far distances.

Recently, Russia has said multiple times that they stopped small boats with Ukrainian soldiers on them near the western side of the Crimean Peninsula.

Last year, Russia’s control over Snake Island and the Boyko platforms, which were named after Ukraine’s former minister of energy, was seen as a threat to Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.

Currently, Russia is facing a greater threat as Ukrainian drones and commandos are carrying out attacks on the northwest part of Crimea. They have caused damage to a radar base on the Tarkhankut Peninsula and even managed to plant a Ukrainian flag during an operation to celebrate Independence Day on 24 August.

Serhiy Kuzan from the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre in Kyiv said that the Boyko towers mission was a risky operation conducted from a far distance.

“We won against the Russians because we reached the towers first and took away their surveillance devices,” he explained, “before the Russians could send their planes to defend their equipment. ”

Kyiv is very clear about wanting to get back the Crimean Peninsula.

The video commentary says that Russia can no longer fully control the Black Sea. This means that Ukraine is now much closer to regaining control of Crimea.

For now, it may seem far away, but it is important to limit Russia’s ability to monitor the northern Black Sea in order to gradually weaken Moscow’s control.

  • Russian missile fired UK-flagged civilian cargo ship – UK

Russian missile fired UK-flagged civilian cargo ship – UK

The UK says that Russia attacked a civilian cargo ship with many cruise missiles while it was in the Ukrainian port of Odesa last month.

The attack happened on 24 August but was stopped by Ukraine’s air defenses, according to the UK’s foreign office.

The ship from Liberia was attacked by missiles shot from a Russian carrier, it said.

In July, Russia said that ships going to Ukraine’s ports through the Black Sea could be attacked by the military.

The warning came after Moscow backed out of an important grain agreement supported by the United Nations. This agreement allowed civilian cargo ships to export Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.

President Vladimir Putin was upset because there were too many rules and limits on his country’s farm products.

Moscow wanted a big Russian bank to join a worldwide payments system, restrictions to be removed on Russian fertilizer companies, and for its ships to have complete access to insurance and foreign ports.

What was the Ukraine grain deal about.

It started attacking ports in southern Ukraine not long after it withdrew from the deal, even though it promised not to do such attacks in the agreement.

On Monday, the UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke to parliament and said that the failed attack on the grain ship only showed how desperate Putin is.

Mr Sunak said that Ukraine has the legal right to sell their goods to other countries using the oceans, and they also have a moral right to transport and sell grain that helps in feeding people all over the world.

Russia has not said anything about the attack yet.

Recently, Moscow has been focusing more on damaging ports in Ukraine after they withdrew from the grain agreement. Kyiv said that someone has made a sneaky plan to hurt its grain exports and weaken global food safety.

The Foreign Office said that Russia destroyed 280,000 tonnes of grain after leaving the deal. They accused Russia of using food and trade to harm the rest of the world.

Officials also said that Russian attacks have caused damage to 26 port infrastructure facilities in Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Reni since July.

In July, officials from Kenya said that Russia’s decision to withdraw from the deal was a betrayal to countries suffering from drought.

Korir Sing’Oei, a high-ranking official in Kenya’s foreign affairs ministry, said that if there is an increase in the amount of food available worldwide due to this action, it will affect the countries in the Horn of Africa more than other places because they are already suffering from drought.

President Vladimir Putin has promised to give free grain to six African countries that have shown support for Russia at international meetings.

The foreign office said that the Russian strikes destroyed more grain than they promised to give to African countries. This grain could have fed about a million people for a year.

‘It is very difficult to be faithful in marriage” – RMD

Veteran Nollywood actor RMD has acknowledged the challenges of fidelity in entertainment, highlighting how married male celebrities frequently face advances from eager women seeking to lead them astray.

He shared these insights during a recent episode of the Teju Babyface Deep Dive Podcast, hosted by comedian Teju Babyface.

Mofe-Damijo said, “It’s very hard for entertainers to be faithful in marriage because of the line of work that we are in. Every one of us is married, we are the target. Look at how women are, how can you escape it? Women are like Delilah, they are like Jezebel, they prepare… The only way the enemy can perpetrate their real intention is to constantly aim at the image of God or the symbol of authority in any home. Then shut it down. It’s like shooting a General on the battlefield. You drop him and then the battalion scatter. Their mission is to take down the head of the family.

“So, it’s very difficult [to be faithful]. You have to get to the point where your wife understands what she is up against as well. Because if your wife is not up to speed on what she is up against, then you would be left open.”

RMD is married to television personality Jumobi Adegbesan. Following the loss of his first wife, talk show host May Ellen ‘MEE’ Mofe-Damijo in 1996, he entered into this new marriage.

  • Portsmouth City Council continues to exert pressure over proposed Aquind Interconnector

Portsmouth City Council continues to exert pressure over proposed Aquind Interconnector

The leader of a council has promised to keep opposing a proposed £1. 2 billion electricity connection between two countries, as a final decision approaches.

Aquind Ltd wants to connect Portsmouth and Normandy in France by placing cables.

Portsmouth City Council recently made an agreement with a company to make sure their sea defense work is not negatively affected by the plans.

But leader Steve Pitt has said the authority will keep fighting against the interconnector scheme.

The ideas were first presented in 2019. The High Court reversed a government decision from 2022 that had blocked the project.

This means that the plans were returned to the ministers who will soon make a final decision.
Mr Pitt thinks that the suggested route is not possible and not good, and he wants them to think the same and say no to the idea.

The cable would come to the shore at Eastney and be laid through Portsmouth and the countryside of Hampshire to Lovedean.

MrPitt said that it will greatly affect the daily lives and well-being of our residents and also have a negative impact on our environment.

He said that the recent agreement with Aquind was a necessary process that was done without any negative impact.

This document explains how the council and Aquind would cooperate to prevent conflicts between the ongoing fourth and fifth phases of the North Portsea Island Coastal Defence Scheme and the construction of the interconnector.

Earlier this month, the director of Aquind, Richard Glasspool, said that signing the agreement demonstrated that the company was prepared to work collaboratively with the council and other organizations.

A company representative said before that the interconnector is very important infrastructure. It can give up to 5% of the electricity that Britain uses in a year, which is enough to power five million homes.

However, campaigners, councillors, and local MPs expressed their worries about problems like harm to the environment and disturbance happening throughout the city.

They spoke about a number of topics, including the role played by the police in the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) electoral victory, and the potential replacement of the current Inspector-General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare.

In spite of the accusations and debate surrounding the conversations in the leaked video, IGP George Akuffo Dampare and Superintendent George Asare were seen mingling during the committee’s break.

  • Trudeau departs from India following chilly visit

Trudeau departs from India following chilly visit

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has returned from India after his airplane had a problem, which caused his visit to last two extra days in the country’s capital.

He was supposed to fly on Sunday after the G20 summit was over, but unfortunately, a humiliating mechanical issue prevented him from flying.

People in his own country and Indian people on social media made fun of him for being late. This happened after Mr. Trudeau had a tense meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Canada and India’s relationship has become more tense in the last few months.

India Today reported on Tuesday that Mr. Trudeau’s visit to India did not improve the cold relationship that he has with India.

A few days before he went to Delhi, Mr. Trudeau suddenly announced that his country was stopping discussions about a trade agreement with India.

Canada’s Sikh community has been involved in significant protests that have caused a lot of tension. India is worried about the actions of Sikh people who want to break away from the country. They say they are not responsible for the death of a famous Sikh advocate for independence in British Columbia in June.

During their meeting on Sunday, Mr. Modi expressed his worries to Mr. Trudeau about the ongoing anti-India actions of extremist groups in Canada. Modi’s office stated that these groups were promoting the idea of separating from India and encouraging violent behavior.

At the same time, Mr. Trudeau’s team stated that the Canadian prime minister emphasized the significance of following and respecting the laws, democratic values, and the independence of a nation.

MrTrudeau said during a press conference that he talked with Mr. Modi about other countries interfering in Canada’s matters. Canada is investigating India, China, and Russia for interfering in elections.

People were surprised when the Canadian prime minister didn’t go to a dinner party for world leaders organized by the Indian President Droupadi Murmu. According to reports, his office didn’t explain why he didn’t attend. Some people noticed that he quickly let go of Mr. Modi’s hand when they were shaking hands.

It is not clear what he has done for the past two days. According to the media, it is believed that he stayed at his hotel without doing any more diplomatic activities.

Neither Mr Trudeau nor the Indian government have said anything publicly about the delay in his coming back home.

However, an Indian government official turned up to say goodbye and wish him and his group a safe journey home on behalf of Prime Minister Modi’s government.

On Monday, Canada’s Defense Department told the BBC that Mr Trudeau’s airplane – a Royal Canadian Air Force plane with the tail number ’01’ – had a problem that needs fixing. It was caused by a part that needs to be replaced.

This problem shows that these steps are working.

The defense department said they are sending another plane to India to bring Mr.

The Toronto Star said that the RCAF sent someone to India who could solve the problem. The text says that the CC-150 Polaris plane is a part of an older group of planes that has had a lot of problems and will be changed soon.

This is not the first time that Mr. Trudeau has had problems with his plane while traveling.

In 2019, a plane with journalists crashed into the wing of another plane that was hired to take him on his campaign journey. He was not on the plane at the time.

Naa Ashorkor shares how she was robbed on Accra-Tema motorway

Ghanaian TV host Naa Ashorkor has shared her robbery ordeal on the Accra-Tema motorway during a conversation on TV3’s New Day show.

She recounted the traumatic experience and her subsequent avoidance of the route.

“Every time I use the motorway, I am scared. The first time I used the motorway in my life, I was robbed on the motorway. I was coming from Akosombo, I was with a family, I think they were an Egyptian family. And we were robbed on the motorway. So I decided I was not going to use the motorway again,” she revealed.

She added that she had resorted to praying when she found herself using the road again. Naa Ashorkor further expressed her concern for those who ply the road every day, calling on the government to do something concerning the matter.

“Fast forward to some time in 2014, I went back to using a motorway because I had to go to Pram Pram. And every time I hit the road, I pray. When I tell you, I say Psalm 23 and the Lord’s Prayer the whole time. I’m not joking. It’s a scary experience, and it’s gotten worse now, I don’t know how people who come from Tema to Accra are able to do this every day. It must be very difficult.

“Clearly, the road is bad now. The tollbooths have made it even so much worse, and we’re calling on the government to do something about it now,” she said.

In addition to a number of other individuals, including rapper Sarkodie, Naa Ashorkor has called on the government to start work on the Accra-Tema highway.

  • Cocaine production in Colombia reaches historic levels

Cocaine production in Colombia reaches historic levels

As per the UN’s yearly report, Colombia witnessed the highest level of land utilization for growing coca plants in its history last year.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reported that the amount of coca being grown had increased by 24% since 2021.

Coca leaves are important to make cocaine and for a long time, Colombia has been the biggest producer of this illegal drug.

The amount of land used to grow coca bushes increased by 13%. The areas close to Colombia’s borders had the largest increase.

Around 66% of the coca crops are located in the provinces of Nariño and Putumayo, which are next to Ecuador, and in Norte de Santander, which is close to the Venezuelan border.

The amount of coca plants grown in Putumayo has increased by 77%. Putumayo is located near Peru and Ecuador.

Candice Welsch, who works for the UN, said it’s concerning that more coca plants are being grown in the country every year.
Growing Coca plants in Colombia. Please explain the text I am about to provide using simpler language. This refers to the amount of land in Colombia that is used to grow coca plants, measured in hectares.
Colombia’s Justice Minister, Néstor Osuna, stated that his country was successfully reducing the number of new cases and that the rate of increase was much lower than last year.

But, Leonardo Correa from the UNODC said that the amount of coca being grown has increased a lot in 2022.

The plants that were small last year are now fully grown and producing a lot of crops. Put simply, the amount of land being added each year is decreasing. “But he said that the production of cocaine is increasing at a faster rate. ”

The amount of land in Colombia being used to grow coca plants and the amount of cocaine that could be produced from it are currently the highest they have been since the UN started keeping track in 2001.

Colombia grows the most coca plants, which are used to make cocaine. They produce 60% of all the cocaine in the world. Peru and Bolivia also grow a lot of coca plants.

President Gustavo Petro asked his colleagues, who are leaders of other regions, to change their approach in dealing with drug use. He suggested that they should focus on treating drug use as a health problem rather than using military tactics.

He said at a conference on drugs in Cali that it is time to build hope and not continue the violent and fierce wars. He also said that drugs should be seen as a health issue, not a military problem for society.
His Mexican partner, Andrés Manuel López Obrador said the most important thing is to fight against poverty and inequality, and to provide jobs and fair pay.

He said farmers should be persuaded to stop growing marijuana, poppies, and coca and start growing beans, corn, cocoa, and fruit trees instead.

Mexico is where some really strong drug gangs are based. They control the paths that drugs take from South America to the United States and Europe.

It also makes a lot of drugs like heroin, cannabis, methamphetamine, and synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

Endurance Grand hints at dropping a new track soon

Endurance Dzigbordi Dedzo, a Ghanaian dance sensation also known as Endurance Grand in the entertainment industry, is getting ready to release a song.

She stated on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z that creatives who possess multiple skills always have an advantage.

“It’s a blessing to be a dancer and at the same time have the talent to put music out there. Because I feel that if you are a dancer and also has the talent to produce music or compose a song, it means that you know the hearts of people because you know what the individuals want to hear,” she said.

Asked if she would attempt to release a song just as Dancegod Lloyd and others have done, she answered in the affirmative.

“Oh, wait and see. It is in the pipeline. It’s coming,” she hinted.

Endurance is not the first dancer to also release to music. Dancers like Akosua Agyapong, Slim Busterr, G’Mann, Sony Achiba, Nana Yaw Wiredu, and Reggie Rockstone once loved music as much as they did dancing.

  • French woman killed after being shot through wall

French woman killed after being shot through wall

A 24-year-old woman was killed in her apartment in Marseille, France when a stray bullet, fired at a place where drugs are sold, hit her in the head.

Prosecutors say that someone shot a bullet randomly and it went through a window in the woman’s bedroom.

Marseille has been greatly affected by increasing violence caused by drug gangs, resulting in at least 40 deaths this year.

At least three innocent people, including this woman, have been killed in similar attacks.

She was first declared brain-dead after someone shot at her apartment with a Kalashnikov gun on Sunday night. She lived there with her mother in the Saint-Thys neighborhood.

She went to the hospital because she had a very bad injury on her head and she was in a lot of danger. She passed away on Tuesday morning, according to Marseille prosecutor Dominique Laurens.

The shooting happened near a pharmacy that the police know is a place where drugs are sold. The prosecutor said this in a statement.

The police found 23 bullet casings from a specific type of gun called a Kalashnikov at the place where everything happened. Ms Laurens said that after the gunshots started, the woman was hit by another bullet that was shot into the air without aiming.

According to the prosecutor, three more apartments in the building were also shot at, but none of the people living in those apartments were hurt.

Frédérique Camilleri, the police chief for the Bouches-du-Rhône department which includes Marseille, stated that drug gangs are using weapons of war without any control in order to gain control over new areas.

More police were being sent to the area, she said.

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin called the incident a terrible event and assured police that they would receive extra help.

He opened a new building for France’s top police unit, Raid, in Marseille.
Marseille has a long history of fighting and crime caused by drug gangs competing for control of certain areas.

However, the recent attacks are happening when the Mediterranean port city is already busy with hosting events for the Rugby World Cup and welcoming Pope Francis in September.

A man who was 55 years old was killed by a gunshot on Monday evening. This happened in a district located in the poor northern part of the city, which is known for drug dealing. The people who are thought to have committed the shooting were two individuals on a motorcycle.

There are two groups called Yoda and DZ Mafia that are believed to be responsible for many shootings in the northern parts of Marseille, especially in the tall buildings area known as La Paternelle.

According to the Marseille prosecutor’s office, there have been over 90 murders or attempted murders related to drug trafficking in France’s second largest city this year. Out of these incidents, 43 people have lost their lives and 109 others have been injured.

Smaller cities are also getting involved in the drug conflict more and more.

In the city of Nîmes, two people, one 18 years old and one 10 years old, were killed recently. The attacks were connected to the drug business.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), a well-known humanitarian organization, has said that the situation in Libya is very bad or “disastrous”.

The storm called Daniel caused very bad flooding in the North African country. The cities of Benghazi and Derna were affected the most.

The person in charge of NRC in Libya, Dax Bennett Roque, says that the rescue team in Benghazi has found that many thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes and have nowhere to go.

The NRC says that because of many years of fighting in Libya, there are not enough resources available to handle a national emergency like this, which makes the disaster even worse.

Roque said that humanitarian aid groups in Libya have not been given enough money for a long time. Now is the moment to support the people and assist them in their journey towards healing. ”

  • US unfreezes Iranian money in exchange for prisoners

US unfreezes Iranian money in exchange for prisoners

The US has given permission for banks to move $6bn of Iranian money that was blocked in South Korea to Qatar. This is important because it will allow five Americans who are being held by Iran to be released.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken informed Congress that the money would only help Iran to some extent since it could solely be utilized for trade related to humanitarian aid.

He also said that five Iranians who were being held in the US will be released as part of the agreement to exchange prisoners.

    Republicans disapproved of the transfer.

A senator said that President Joe Biden paid a large sum of money to a country that supports terrorism.

Recently, US officials reported that four people who are both American and Iranian citizens were removed from Evin prison in Tehran and placed under house arrest.

A lawyer identified three prisoners as Siamak Namazi, Emad Shargi, and Morad Tahbaz. Morad Tahbaz is also a citizen of Britain. The fourth person was not recognized, and the fifth person was also not recognized because they were already being kept at home by authorities.

Who are the people with citizenship in two countries that are currently imprisoned in Iran.

It is thought that since 2018, many many billions of dollars that Iran is owed for its oil and other exports have been put on hold in bank accounts worldwide. This happened when former President Donald Trump decided to stop following an agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear program and put sanctions back in place.

The US has given permission for some banks in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East to move $6 billion from South Korea to Qatar’s central bank without facing any punishment.

MrBlinken said in a letter to Congress on Monday that it is important to move money from limited Iranian accounts in South Korea to accounts in Qatar for humanitarian trade. This is necessary for the release of US citizens.

Last month, he said that Qatar had promised to make sure the money given to Iran would only be used for helping people and would be carefully monitored and regulated. He also mentioned that Iran would not be able to directly access the funds, and the US would closely monitor the situation.

The Republican leader of the House Foreign Affairs Committee criticized the Biden administration for going ahead with what he referred to as a “hostage deal” worth $6 billion, despite their promises.

Rep Michael McCaul said that the Americans being held in Iran are innocent and they should be released right away without any conditions.

I am worried about the government’s choice to not punish Iran and let them have $6 billion. Iran is a country that supports terrorism. This decision could encourage other countries that don’t like America to take more people hostage in the future.

Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the White House, said that the waiver was just a normal part of a sensitive and ongoing process.

Nasser Kanani, a spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry, said he was hopeful that the prisoner exchange would happen very soon.

  • A resident of Otsebleku files a lawsuit against Jean Mensa,Bossman Asare

A resident of Otsebleku files a lawsuit against Jean Mensa,Bossman Asare

Ayitah Precious, an Otsebleku resident who lives close to Afienya in the Greater Accra Region, has filed a lawsuit against Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa and Deputy Chairman Bossman Asare, accusing them of disobeying the court in the ongoing limited voter registration dispute.

The applicant, Ayitah Precious, made a number of claims in a sworn affidavit regarding the limited voter registration drive and the Electoral Commission’s response.

The following was stated in the affidavit: “The Electoral Commission had announced the beginning of the limited voter registration exercise at its district offices across the country on September 12, 2023.

“Ayitah Precious resides approximately 44.3 kilometers from the Electoral Commission’s district office in Prampram and expressed concerns about the cost and logistics of traveling to the district office to register.”

According to the applicant, many eligible voters, including herself, would not be able to participate in the limited registration process because it would only be held at district offices and not in the actual electoral districts.

Ayitah Precious requested an interlocutory injunction and filed an originating motion on notice in the High Court in Tema to prevent the Electoral Commission from carrying out the limited voter registration drive.

Despite receiving the injunction application, the Electoral Commission carried on with the registration exercise’s preparations, announcing the exercise’s start date in a press release on September 11, 2023.

Legal representation for the applicant argued that the Electoral Commission had violated the court’s injunction by continuing the registration process while it was still under consideration.

Ayitah Precious and her legal counsel contended that the Electoral Commission’s actions might imperil the results of the legal proceedings and obstruct the administration of justice.

They requested that Jean Mensa and Bossman Asare be found in contempt of court and asked for custodial prison terms as punishment.

  • Sara Sharif: Pakistani court relocates siblings to government childcare facility

Sara Sharif: Pakistani court relocates siblings to government childcare facility

A judge in Pakistan has said that Sara Sharif‘s brothers and sisters, who came from the UK with their dad, should go to a special place where the government will take care of them.

The five kids were discovered at their grandpa’s house, and he wished to keep taking care of them.

Sara, a 10-year-old girl, was discovered dead at her house in Woking, Surrey, on August 10th. This happened a day after her father, uncle, and step-mother partner left the country.

Post-mortem tests showed that Sara had many serious injuries all over her body.

Sara’s dad, Urfan Sharif, her stepmom Beinash Batool, and her brother Faisal Malik, along with five kids aged one to 13, went away from the UK.

Surrey Police want to talk to three grown-ups as part of a murder investigation for Sara’s death.

The police in Pakistan have not found them yet.

On Tuesday, the court decided that Sara’s five siblings should go to a government childcare facility in Pakistan for a little while.

The decision did not say how much time the kids can stay at the government place. It also does not decide where the kids will eventually go.

Before, the kids were taken by their family members while there were armed police and local media all around them. They were brought into court, and this lasted for about 40 minutes. The organization determined that it did not have the authority to make the decision.

Then, the brothers and sisters were brought to a different court. Finally, the judge asked the children to come inside. Some people were lifted or held by their aunts or female police officers.

While the judge was asking their grandfather and his lawyer questions, they sat on chairs on the side, with their legs hanging down. The oldest child took care of the youngest, walking back and forth in a courtyard while gently bouncing them.

At one time, the kids’ family brought drinks in boxes and cookies in small packages.

All five people were taken to a police car and had to wait there before the judge made his decision.

Sara’s grandpa, Muhammad Sharif, who is Urfan Sharif’s dad, didn’t say anything when he left the court.

The police took the children from Mr. Sharif’s house on Monday in Jhelum. They returned them on the condition that he would bring them to court the following day.

Earlier, he said to BBC News that the kids have been living at his house since they came on August 10th.

“MrSharif said that I didn’t allow them to leave because they had arrived from the UK. ”

I told Urfan and Beinash that they can go wherever they want to, but I won’t allow the children to go with you. Simpler words: I informed Urfan and Beinash that they are free to go wherever they wish, but I won’t permit the children to accompany them. Nobody had asked me about the children until today.

People asked me about Urfan, Faisal, and Beinash, but nobody asked me about the children.

He later explained that if someone had asked him about the safety of children, he would have assured them that the children were in good hands with him. I have the right to care about them more than anyone else.

He said that his son and his partner didn’t call him. He thinks it’s because they were afraid of the police punishing him.

MrSharif had said many times before that he didn’t talk to his son or know where the family was.

BBC News also talked to Urfan Sharif’s sisters, who said that the children were really sad when they were taken away from their grandfather’s house.

Farzana Malik said that the children were crying and the police were taking them away forcefully.

“They were very sad and kept saying, ‘we don’t want to leave, we don’t want to leave. ‘”

People who were there saw police officers go into the building a little before 4:30 pm local time on Monday. Police officers stopped cars and made sure no one could film on their mobile phones, according to people living nearby.

MrSharif said that the police broke the CCTV cameras and the gates of his home.

The police said they had the children, but Sara’s dad, stepmom, and uncle weren’t with them. The police said the kids didn’t argue about going.

Surrey Police said in a statement that they are working closely with Surrey County Council and international partners, such as Interpol, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and the National Crime Agency, to figure out what to do next.

The force said that they are still focused on keeping these five children safe and well taken care of.

The council of Surrey County stated that its main concern is the well-being of the children.

Tim Oliver, who is in charge of Surrey County Council, said that they are working non-stop with different groups like the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Surrey Police, Interpol, and the National Crime Agency to make sure the children are safe and well. They are doing this through the legal processes that are happening right now.

Muhammad Sharif told the BBC on Friday that he sent a message to his son, saying he should give up to the police.

Muhammad Sharif and his family say that the police have been bothering them, taking some family members away without a good reason, and searching their houses without permission. He said that the police are making false accusations against them to put more pressure on them.

The police said no or the police disagree with this.

Last week, there was a video where Sara’s stepmother talked in front of people for the very first time since they found the body of the 10-year-old girl. Sara’s dad was in the video too, but he didn’t talk. Batool read from a notebook.

Ms Batool said that Sara’s death was an “event” and that she and Urfan Sharif are ready to help UK authorities.

She said the family is hiding because they are scared that the Pakistani police might hurt them and cause their death. The head of the Jhelum police said to the BBC that the claims of mistreatment and pain inflicted on family members are not true.

Sara’s father called for help as soon as he arrived in Islamabad, Pakistan. Sadly, Sara’s body was found soon after.

  • We have saved children with childhood cancer – NHIS

We have saved children with childhood cancer – NHIS

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in June 2022, expanded the list of benefits covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to include treatment for the four most common childhood cancers. These include Wilms tumour, Burkitt lymphoma, retinoblastoma, and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Despite some difficulties, the childhood cancer policy has helped many kids who have the disease condition since it was put into place.

In an effort to overcome this financial obstacle, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) carried out preliminary actuarial modelling of the Scheme’s capacity to bear the costs of coverage for these paediatric cancers.

In this context, the inclusion of the four most prevalent childhood cancers was announced by the First Lady, Her Excellency, Mrs. Rebecca Akuffo-Addo, at the official start of the national NHIS Week celebrations in November 2021.

This is demonstrated by the submission of claims for services provided to patients with childhood cancer who are active members of the NHIS by credentialed healthcare service providers.

The NHIA believes that the four common childhood cancer services were covered because there was a genuine need for access to care for a condition that, if properly managed, could save priceless lives and improve the fortunes of the country.

The Authority is therefore fully committed to achieving this goal, and every effort will be made to ensure that it is done so in partnership with all relevant parties.

The NHIA started processes for the evaluation and operationalization of new benefits in accordance with its guidelines for reviewing the Benefit Package. These processes included developing reimbursement protocols, outlining reimbursable management pathways, pricing services, developing tariffs, and conducting a final actuarial and budget impact analysis.

A multi-stakeholder group of paediatric oncologists who treat cancer patients directly from Korle-Bu, Cape-Coast, Komfo Anokye, Ho, and Tamale Teaching Hospitals, Geater Accra Regional Hospital, and Holy Family Hospital, Techiman; officials from the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, Health Facilities Regulatory Authority, and other organisations carried out the mapping out of the management pathway for childhood cancers and the development of reimbursement protocols.

The Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Holy Family Hospital, Techiman, Korle Bu, Cape-Coast, Komfo Anokye, Ho, and Tamale Teaching Hospitals were the only seven facilities offering these services, according to information provided to the NHIA.

This guided the expansion of coverage in these facilities until the right specialists and tools were made accessible in other facilities across the country.

Since its implementation in June 2022, the following Claims have been submitted to NHIA for reimbursement:

The NHIA is aware of changing economic conditions that necessitate reviews of its prices and tariffs despite the amounts paid above towards the reimbursement of services for childhood cancer.

In response to price changes, service tariffs and drug prices were therefore reviewed in February 2023 rather than the usual due date of July. All other services included in the Benefit Package are subject to these price reviews, which are conducted on an annual basis in cooperation with stakeholders.

The Authority is currently working to thoroughly review its tariff building blocks in order to come up with tariffs that will both further support the viability of facilities and guarantee the ongoing sustainability of the programme.

The NHIA is aware of claims made by facilities that medicines and consumables are not readily available at stated prices, and it will work to involve relevant stakeholders and supply chain regulators in the purchase of healthcare in order to ensure that quality healthcare services are made available to all scheme members.

It recognises the unique contributions that the media, participants in the programme, patient advocacy organisations, and medical professionals make in representing the public’s interests in health-related issues. It also encourages a comprehensive portrayal of the program’s efforts to reduce financial risk associated with the cost of high-quality healthcare services.

Pennsylvania cops issue warning over armed fugitive killer

The police in Pennsylvania have alerted people that Danelo Cavalcante, who escaped from prison, is carrying a weapon. They have been looking for him for 12 days because he is a dangerous person who has killed someone.

They are looking in South Coventry Township, which is north-west of Philadelphia, and told people to stay indoors early on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old person from Brazil is believed to have removed his beard to try and hide from the authorities.

He was found guilty of murdering his former girlfriend and given a lifelong prison term.

But a week after finding out his punishment, he escaped from Chester County Prison on August 31st by shuffling sideways between two walls, climbing a fence, and going through razor wire.

He took and later left behind a milk truck and people have seen him multiple times recently.

Cavalcante has a weapon. The police told people who live in the area to keep their doors and windows locked, keep their vehicles safe, and stay inside.
The amount of money offered for any information about where he is has gone up from $20,000 to $25,000.

Cavalcante was given a punishment of life in prison without any chance of being released for killing Deborah Brandao. He stabbed her 38 times in front of her two young children in April 2021.

Sarah Brandao’s sister told CNN that she has been unable to sleep for days since he ran away, and she is scared that he might come to her house.

She said that he and her sister became friends when they lived next to each other in Chester County. However, he started feeling jealous and angry.

He is being searched by the authorities in Brazil for his involvement in a murder that took place in 2017.

Plot to oust IGP: Bugri Naabu provides a new tape to the committee

The committee has discovered a second tape in addition to the one under investigation as the parties start their opening remarks during the Inspector-General of Police’s testimony.

This came up when Dr. George Akuffo Dampare‘s attorney reminded the committee of its authority and said that it would not work with them on any matters if the information provided to them prior to their arrival did not accurately reflect the situation.

The committee chairman and his deputy’s opening remarks, in the lawyer Kwame Gyan’s opinion, hinted at the possibility of presenting additional evidence.

It turns out that there was a second tape, and if you are interested, I can tell you that I am not a fan. And the Chief Bugri Naabu’s attorneys gave this committee access to that tape. Discarding the second tape will result in a miscarriage of justice and be an outrageous method of presenting evidence.

“I don’t see how we as the committee can say that no we will not look at it, when the first tape, or if you like, the original one is being challenged by the individuals who are on the first tape who say ‘no, there’s more to the tape than we can see’. And guess what? The one who said he taped furnishes and committee with. If you like, the full tape.”

He questioned the IGP’s attorney about whether it would be appropriate to ignore this fact in order to continue with the hearing.

“Council, will it sit with equity, good conscience and law for this committee to say, well there is additional information associated and integral to the first tape and we want to ignore it?”

He added that the IGP’s lawyers have the opportunity to assess that said second tape regarding how “it affects your client, you deal with it.”

The lawyer added that it would be unfair and unjust for the four previous witnesses to sit in during Dampare’s testimony.

“The same way that we sat outside, they should also sit outside,” he told Parliament’s ad-hoc committee a while ago.

  • The reason ewes are called number 9

The reason ewes are called number 9

This tradition has deep historical roots and is linked to two significant narratives that have played a crucial role in shaping the identity of the Ewe community.

Firstly, during the colonial era, when the British were delineating administrative regions in Ghana, they designated the Volta Region, the ancestral home of the Ewe people, as the ninth administrative region. This historical alignment between the Ewe people and the number nine forged a connection that has persisted through generations.

Secondly, in the early years following Ghana’s independence, a momentous event occurred that further cemented the association between the Ewe people and the number nine. Ghana hosted its inaugural beauty pageant, a celebration of Ghanaian culture and elegance.

At the heart of this event was a contestant hailing from the Volta Region, Monica Ablah Amekoafia, who proudly displayed the number nine on her wrist. Monica’s charm and grace captivated both the judges and the audience, leading her to a resounding victory in the pageant.

According to ghgossip, her triumphant display of the number nine to the jubilant crowd etched her name into Ghanaian history. The fusion of Monica’s victory and the colonial-era regional demarcation has merged over time, firmly embedding the moniker “Number 9” within the core of the Ewe community’s identity.

It stands as a poignant reminder of their rich cultural heritage, unwavering resilience, and significant contributions to Ghana’s diverse cultural landscape. Today, when the term “Number 9” is heard in Ghana, it transcends mere numerical significance; it embodies a symbol of pride, unity, and a shared historical journey.

The Ewe people continue to uphold their cherished cultural traditions, and this distinctive nickname serves as a testament to the enduring bonds between Ghana’s past and its vibrant present. It serves as a reminder that history, culture, and identity often intertwine in unexpected and enriching ways, weaving a vibrant tapestry that enhances the nation’s cultural mosaic.

  • Police initiate ‘Snatch them young’ campaign to combat crime

Police initiate ‘Snatch them young’ campaign to combat crime

The Police Administration has initiated a campaign named “Snatch them young” aimed at instilling security awareness in children and fostering their appreciation of the police force’s work. The campaign intends to bolster children’s confidence in the police’s mission to prevent and solve crimes, apprehend wrongdoers, and maintain public order and safety. As part of this initiative, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) have been visiting schools nationwide to engage with students.

In a special arrangement, students from the Police Depot Cluster of Schools in Tesano, Accra, had the opportunity to visit the Police Headquarters. During their visit, they explored various units within the headquarters, including a television station within the Public Affairs Department. The students also enjoyed music from the Police central band and interacted with horses from the Mounted Squadron Unit of the police. POMAB members took turns educating the children about the police’s hierarchy, responsibilities, and operations.

The children were treated to assorted drinks and food and had the chance to exchange pleasantries with their hosts, including the IGP and senior officers, while taking photos together. The students were advised to be responsible citizens and reassured of police protection. They were encouraged to view the police as friends whom they could approach for assistance at any time.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Director of the Police Public Directorate, emphasized that the initiative aimed to make “the police is your friend” slogan meaningful. She highlighted that interactions like these would help children feel comfortable approaching police officers in times of need, rather than fearing them based on parental threats.

Michealla Annane, an 11-year-old Class Four student from the Police Depot One basic school, expressed her joy and appreciation for the opportunity to meet the IGP. She stated that she had learned a lot and would always remember the day.

Eugenia Modenu, a primary two teacher at the school, commended the Police for the initiative, emphasizing its role in deepening students’ understanding of the police force’s duties. Headmistress Evelyn Akorfa-Doe of the Police Depot Three and Four Junior High Schools acknowledged the unique experience provided to the children, allowing them to visit the headquarters of the institution that owns their school.

Putin claims the United Kingdom ‘instructed attack on Russian nuclear plant’

Putin says that Britain planned and carried out an attack on a Russian nuclear facility.

The president of Russia said that Ukrainian soldiers who were captured admitted to being told by British secret services to damage the facility.

He also said that the UK did not fully understand how serious the consequences of planning an attack were, and that he felt like the UK was trying to make him angry.

Speaking in Vladivostok, Putin asked if they are aware of the consequences of their actions.

Are they trying to make us angry enough to attack Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

Does the leader of the UK know what his secret agents are doing in Ukraine.

Putin also said that the US government might have been involved in overseeing the attack. This information was reported by The Times.

He did not say which atomic facility was supposedly attacked.

Russian forces have taken control of a nuclear station called Zaporozhzhia in the south of Ukraine for over a year now.

Soldiers from Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of attacking the area near the plant’s six reactors.

Putin will meet with Kim Jong-un tomorrow to talk about a deal involving nuclear weapons.

Iran provides assistance to Libya after devastated by flooding

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has proposed giving help to Libya after heavy rains and flooding caused many people to get hurt or killed.

Mr Amir-Abdollahian wrote on the X website on Tuesday that Iran’s Red Crescent Society is ready to help Libya.

The minister from Iran also said he was very sorry about the terrible event, and he sent sympathetic messages to the Libyan leaders, the Libyan people, and the families of the people who were hurt or killed.

Iran and Libya recently decided to improve their relationship and have agreed to reopen their embassies.

The two countries are friends, but Iran closed its office in Libya when people in Libya were fighting against their leader, Muammar Gaddafi, who has passed away.

The new Libyan ambassador to Tehran, Ali Jumaa Hassan Fudail, met with Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi in Tehran in early July to officially introduce himself.

Devastating floods in Libya: 10,000 people still missing – IFRC

About 10,000 people are believed to be missing after big floods in Libya, as stated by an official from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

“We have received news from reliable sources that the number of people who are missing has reached 10,000,” explained Tamer Ramadan, who leads the IFRC team in Libya.

Heavy rain has caused flooding and landslides, ruining lots of houses and roads.

The area that suffered the most damage is the port of Derna. A lot of it is now underwater because two dams and four bridges broke.

Mr Ramadan said that a lot of people have died, and it’s possible that the number of deaths could be in the thousands.

The IFRC may ask for immediate money to help the people affected by floods in Libya.

  • Kim’s family has travelled on green armoured train for years

On Sunday afternoon, the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, got on a traditional green train. This train is a symbol of North Korea being closed off and secretive.

Pictures released by North Korean media KCNA show Kim getting on his personal train as he gets ready to go to Russia for a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The United States has cautioned that they might discuss a weapons agreement.

We don’t know when or where this meeting will happen. However, according to Russian state media, Kim’s train has arrived in the country and is currently moving towards the north through Russia’s far east region.

Pictures of Kim leaving Pyongyang show a train station with a long red carpet specially placed for him. Along the carpet, there are people in uniforms and soldiers standing very still. A few important people bend forward and shake Kim’s hand. In the distance, there are women wearing dresses and traditional clothes. They are happy and excited, cheering and waving the flag of North Korea.

In the pictures, it seems like the people shown are North Korea’s Foreign Minister Choe Sun Hui and Ri Pyong Chol, who is a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers’ Party.

At one point, Kim and his group stand near the train entrance, waving to the crowd. They give the crowd a quick look at the train, which is very strong and moves slowly. Inside, the train has shiny wooden floors and a fancy white doorway with decorations.

The line of dark green train cars, decorated with yellow stripes on the side, look like the trains Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il used. They say Kim Jong Un also had fancy dinners on the train.

The train has always caused curiosity because it has carried the Kim family for several generations when they travel within the country and sometimes even outside the country.

Kim Jong Il didn’t like flying and used trains a lot, according to Reuters. This is different from his son, Kim Jong Un, who used to travel in a fancy private jet and studied in Switzerland in the 1990s.

The train that had green color and yellow stripes was also seen in a video from Russian state media when Kim Jong Il visited Russia in 2002. At that time, the rules that limited interactions with other countries had been loosened, giving North Korea a short time to connect with the rest of the world.

Memoirs written by Konstantin Pulikovsky, a former Russian official, tell a story of luxury during Kim Jong Il’s one-month train ride across Russia in 2001. These memories are based on a report from a note-taker in the Russian Foreign Ministry who was on the train with them. According to a 2002 article in the New York Times, Pulikovsky said that the train was run by attractive ladies and had delicious food and wine.

Pulikovsky wrote that you could choose to order dishes from Russia, China, Korea, Japan, and France. According to Pulikovsky, live lobsters and cases of Bordeaux and Burgundy red wines were sent to train stations on the route.

CNN was not able to confirm or verify the information from The New York Times on its own.

South Korean media have previously reported on the train’s safety features. According to a report from a South Korean newspaper called Chosun Ilbo in 2009, the train is very well protected and moves at an average speed of 60 kilometers per hour (about 37 miles per hour).

According to the paper, it had rooms for meetings, a place for people to listen, and bedrooms. It had phone connections through satellites and modern TVs.

The newspaper said that the power is turned off on other tracks before Kim’s train gets close to the station, so that no other trains can move.

North Korea today is very different from the time at the beginning of the 2000s when Pulikovsky wrote about how the train had many expensive and luxurious things.

In 2003, other countries placed restrictions on North Korea because they were still making nuclear weapons and chose not to follow the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Information from inside the country has been flowing very slowly, especially in recent years when Kim Jong Un has been in power.

North Korea, a country that is already very closed and alone, closed its borders during the coronavirus pandemic. Reports from earlier this year said that people who are not part of the important leaders in Pyongyang were having serious problems with not having enough food.

Even before the Covid pandemic, almost half of the people in North Korea did not have enough food, as stated by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

However, the train has been seen on multiple occasions since Kim came into power in 2011, which shows North Korea’s connections with Russia and China – the only countries that support North Korea internationally.

In 2018, Kim took a train to Beijing. This was his first time visiting another country since becoming the leader of his own country. During this trip, he met with the leader of China, Xi Jinping, and other important officials. A video from KCNA showed Kim and some Chinese officials on a train. They were sitting on pink couches in two rows on each side of the train.

Kim traveled to Beijing by train again in January 2019. Then, the next month, he rode the train to Vietnam to meet the President of the US, Donald Trump, in the capital city of Hanoi. However, the summit was not successful, as there was no agreement made or significant progress made in efforts to achieve denuclearization.

In April 2019, Kim went on a train to Vladivostok to meet Putin for the very first time. During their meeting, Kim complained that the US was not being trustworthy during the Hanoi summit. Pictures from the trip display North Korean workers cleaning the outside of the train at the Vladivostok station.

In 2022, North Korean state media released a video of Kim Jong-un working in his office on a train. The office had blue curtains and teal chairs around a white table.

State media showed a documentary that had rare scenes of Kim being more relaxed. He was sitting in his office on the train, wearing a short-sleeved white shirt and smoking a cigarette while talking to officials. There is a laptop and computer monitor in the corner.

  • Astronaut Frank Rubio breaks record for the longest space flight in US

Astronaut Frank Rubio breaks record for the longest space flight in US

Astronaut Frank Rubio has been in space for more than 355 days, which is longer than any other US astronaut.

Rubio, who has been in space since September 2022, broke the previous record set by astronaut Mark Vande Hei at 1:40 p. mAccording to a spokesperson from the space agency, it will happen on Monday at ET.

Additionally, Rubio is close to achieving another important goal in a few weeks. A Russian spaceship called Soyuz will not bring back him and his two friends, Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin, to Earth until September 27th.

This means that Rubio will have been in space for at least 371 days when he finishes his mission. He is about to become the first American to spend over a whole year in microgravity.

But Rubio didn’t plan to set records.

When Rubio went to the space station on a Russian spaceship on September 21, 2022, he and his friends thought they were doing a mission for six months. But the spacecraft that took Rubio and his two Russian colleagues had a problem with a coolant leak in December. Officials at Roscosmos, which is Russia’s space agency, later concluded that the spacecraft was not safe for the crew to return home in.

Instead, the Soyuz MS-22 capsule came back to Earth on March 28 with no people inside. Roscosmos sent a new spacecraft called MS-23 to the space station on February 25. Rubio will come back in September because Russia is getting ready for the next Soyuz spaceship that will have two cosmonauts and one NASA astronaut. The launch might happen on Friday.

In simpler words: To celebrate Rubio’s accomplishment, he recorded a talk with Vande Hei on September 5th. NASA will be showing the video on Tuesday at 11 a. m”ET broadcasts on its own media channel. ”

“Rubio’s trip to space represents the true nature of exploring,” said NASA administrator Bill Nelson in a statement shared on social media on Monday.

The statement says that as he sets new records for being the astronaut who has stayed in space the longest, he is also making it easier for future astronauts. “Frank, your dedication is amazing. ”

If everything happens as expected and Rubio leaves on September 27, his time spent in space for 371 days will not be the longest ever recorded. Valeri Polyakov, a Russian astronaut, holds the record for spending the most consecutive days in space. He stayed on the Mir space station for 437 days from January 1994 to March 1995.

Vande Hei broke a new record in 2022 for spending the most consecutive days in space. NASA and Roscosmos agreed to let him stay longer because Russia sent a film crew of two to the space station. Vande Hei’s return got delayed because there were more people going to the space lab. However, he already knew that his mission might be longer before he got there.

Before Vande Hei, American astronaut Scott Kelly had the record for the longest time spent in space with his mission lasting 340 days. That time in space was a planned long-term mission organized by NASA to learn about how being in space for a while affects people’s bodies.

A cosmonaut from Russia has the record for spending the most total days in space. Gennadi Padalka became the best cosmonaut in 2015 by spending a total of 879 days in space during five different missions.

Peggy Whitson holds the record for spending the most days in space among all US astronauts. She has spent a total of 675 days orbiting the Earth. Whitson, who stopped working for NASA as an astronaut in 2018, has contributed again to the record as recently as 2023. Now, she works as a private astronaut for Axiom Space. Axiom Space has organized two trips to the space station for regular people to go on. During these trips, customers get to experience what it’s like to be in space and they get to go with an experienced professional astronaut.

Rubio went to the space station on a Russian spaceship because NASA and Roscosmos made an agreement to exchange crews in the summer of 2022.

NASA picked Rubio to go on a Soyuz spaceship, and Roscosmos chose Anna Kikina to go on a SpaceX spaceship that flew in October 2022 and came back on March 11.

Even though the United States and Russia have problems with each other, NASA still thinks it is important to work with Roscosmos to keep the space station running and to continue doing valuable scientific research.

When the agreement to share rides was announced, NASA said that it was important to make this deal with Russia to keep the space station safe. If either the Russian Soyuz spacecraft or the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule have problems and cannot be used, a deal has been made to exchange seats so that both American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts can still go to the space station.

Roscosmos didn’t have to use a SpaceX capsule instead of the damaged Soyuz MS-22 crew ship because they had the MS-23 spacecraft ready to launch. The coolant leak on the MS-22 vehicle didn’t necessarily mean that there would be problems with other Soyuz vehicles, according to officials.

Joel Montalbano, who manages NASA’s International Space Station program, said in July that Roscosmos (Russian space agency) looked into the problem and discovered that an “outside force” probably caused the leak. This suggests that a piece of space junk likely collided with the spacecraft.

“A group of researchers from NASA has examined it separately from the Russian team, and we have also found no evidence, based on the information provided by our Russian colleagues, that it is anything other than some kind of outside force or debris or something similar,” Montalbano explained.

While being in space, Rubio has witnessed many groups of astronauts coming and going using SpaceX vehicles. Besides the Axiom-2 crew who visited in May, the SpaceX Crew-6 astronauts have already arrived and left after Rubio came. And the Crew-7 team, consisting of astronauts from different space agencies including NASA, Roscosmos, JAXA, and ESA, reached the space station in August.

  • American cave rescuer says it’s amazing to be above ground

American cave rescuer says it’s amazing to be above ground

A difficult and complicated mission to rescue an American man from a very deep cave in Turkey ended successfully on Tuesday. The man had fallen very sick and was too weak to get out of the cave by himself.

Mark Dickey, who is skilled and knowledgeable in cave exploration, had joined a group of researchers to explore Morca Cave. While they were there, it was reported that Mark started experiencing bleeding from his stomach and intestines.

The cave is in the Taurus Mountain range in southern Turkey. It goes very deep, reaching 1,276 meters (4,186 feet).

A big rescue operation was started with many experienced cave explorers from different countries and Turkish experts.

Recep Salci from Turkey’s disaster management authority said on Tuesday that Mark Dickey is safe and appears to be fine, as shown in a video of him being carried out of the cave with a smile.

Dickey, who was at a medical tent near the cave, expressed how grateful he felt to be back on the earth’s surface. He thanked the rescue teams and the Turkish government for saving his life without asking any questions.

“I stayed underground for a lot longer than I thought because of a surprise health problem,” he explained.

I’m not exactly sure what happened, but I do know that the Turkish government acted quickly to provide the medical supplies I needed. In my opinion, their fast response saved my life. He said, “I was almost at the edge. ”

Dickey’s mom and dad, Debbie and Andy, were very happy about the successful rescue. They said that knowing their son was safe made them feel really relieved and happy.

“They said it was an event that everyone involved in the big rescue effort worked very hard for. They also said that many people helped a lot, and they thanked the Turkish government. ”

They said that Mark is very strong and we believe in his strength. But we also knew that he urgently needed a lot of support right away.

Dickey got stuck in a cave that has very steep holes, deep pits, and narrow paths. Agnes Berentes, a photographer from Hungary who had been in the cave, shared this information with Reuters.

The temperatures underground were cold and wet. Berentes thought it was about 4 degrees Celsius (39 Fahrenheit).

In addition to other problems, his health was worsened by having a serious bleeding in his stomach. At one time, he was very sick to the point where doctors and rescuers had to give him someone else’s blood while he was deep inside the cave.

The European Cave Rescue Association (ECRA) was notified on September 2 about Dickey’s difficult situation.

This caused a big rescue effort with more than 200 helpers from countries like the US, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Ukraine.

ECRA officials said that the rescue efforts were split into seven sections at different depths. The teams worked nonstop and were able to move Dickey to a depth of 180 meters (590 feet) underground. Finally, they successfully brought him out of the cave.

The Turkish Caving Federation said that Dickey was safely taken out at 12:37 am on Tuesday.

A doctor was with Dickey in the cave. The rescue teams got constant updates from them using a communication line.

In the pictures, it shows him lying down and being rescued by workers using special equipment.

Dickey is a person who has been teaching others to rescue people stuck in caves for ten years. He has gone into caves in 20 different states in the U. Sand 10 different countries. He started a non-profit organization called the Caving Academy to help people who explore caves.

He began exploring caves in the 1990s and held positions as a secretary at the European Cave Rescue Association and as the executive director at the Caving Academy.

Correction: We fixed the title of this story to say how much time Dickey was stuck for.

  • Heavy flooding in southern China released more than 70 crocodiles

Heavy flooding in southern China released more than 70 crocodiles

Officials in a city in southern China are trying to catch more than 70 crocodiles that escaped from a farm during heavy flooding. The news has been reported by several state media outlets, and some residents have been told to stay inside.

The scary reptiles used to be kept at a crocodile farm in Maoming, in the south part of Guangdong province. However, a lot of rain caused a nearby lake to become too full, which allowed the animals to get out and be free.

According to a news report from Hai Bao News, there were about 69 grown-up crocodiles and six young ones near Peng Cun village. They were moving around and looking for things. The place said it talked to the nearby authorities who told people to stay inside and not go out.

A special team was sent out to find the crocodiles using special technology that uses sound waves, as reported by The Beijing News.

But the high level of the floodwater made it very difficult for the operation. This made the authorities ask residents to stay at home.

A person from the emergency team said they might have to kill the crocodiles instead of catching them.

The video on Chinese social media shows crocodiles hiding near a sign by a road that is underwater.

People in special uniforms and safety gear were on boats looking for reptiles.

Some videos show that some crocodiles were caught and taken to land. Their mouths and legs were tied to limit their movement. A few local people watched this happening from the shore out of curiosity.

In China, people really value crocodiles because they have nice skin and their meat is thought to be good for health in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Guangdong is a good place for raising crocodiles because it has a warmer weather compared to other areas.

Heavy rain has hit Southern China and Hong Kong after typhoon Haikui passed through the area last week.

  • Israel’s democracy point of crisis as top court examines bill restricting its authority

Israel’s democracy point of crisis as top court examines bill restricting its authority

Israel’s Supreme Court opened hearings Tuesday on a law to curb its powers, in a case that could set the judiciary on a collision course with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline government after months of mass protests over the controversial legislation.

The court is hearing arguments for and against the first part of Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul plan to pass parliament – a law that restricts the court’s ability to nullify government actions it deems “unreasonable.”

Beyond the legal questions surrounding the law and the justices ruling on their own powers remains the question of whether Netanyahu’s government would even abide by a court ruling – possibly months away if it comes – striking down the law. That would set Israel up for an unprecedented judicial and political crisis.

Netanyahu has always claimed that he is in full control of this government – no matter who his ministers are. But the next few weeks could be critical to his own future.

“If Netanyahu wants to survive as prime minister, he must have his hands on the steering wheel, otherwise he will fall apart,” said Amit Segal, chief political correspondent for Israel’s Channel 12. “The Supreme Court and the government alike possess a credible nuclear threat against the other side … if both sides are rational actors, they will … disarm themselves. Problem is, we’re in a crisis that is not very rational anymore.”

Netanyahu’s proposals to weaken the courts have divided Israeli society, with critics describing them as a threat to the country’s democracy. Tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets outside of the Supreme Court on Monday evening, part of the 36-week long protest movement against the overhaul, to show support for the justices ahead of the hearing. Some of the demonstrators later marched to the prime minister’s official residence in Jerusalem.

The Supreme Court is hearing appeals against the so-called “reasonableness law,” the first aspect of the judicial overhaul passed in July by Netanyahu’s government despite months of street demonstrations, warnings from the Biden administration and a boycott by all opposition lawmakers of the final vote on the bill.

The measure, which amended one of Israel’s Basic Laws, came into effect two days after it was passed and strips the Supreme Court of the power to strike down government decisions it finds to be unreasonable.

Like the United Kingdom, Israel doesn’t have a written constitution. Instead, it relies on 13 Basic Laws, as well as court ruling precedents that could one day become a constitution. That leaves the Supreme Court as the only check on the executive and legislative branches of government. Striking down a Basic Law would be uncharted territory for the Supreme Court, although it has examined and commented on Basic Laws before.

In 2021, the court outlined very narrow circumstances under which a Basic Law can be annulled. Supreme Court President Esther Hayut said a Basic Law could be struck down if it endangers democratic principles such as those that deal “a mortal blow to free and fair elections, core human rights, the separation of powers, the rule of law and an independent judiciary.”

That standard was then used this year when Netanyahu dismissed key ally Aryeh Deri from all ministerial posts, in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling that it was unreasonable to appoint him to positions in government due to his criminal convictions and because he had said in court last year that he would retire from public life.

In a historic first, all 15 judges on the court have been convened to hear the challenge to the controversial law, which is expected to last no longer than a couple of days. The court must issue its ruling by January 12, 2024, because of a retirement coming up on the bench.

In an interview with CNN in July, Prime Minister Netanyahu refused to commit to abiding by a potential Supreme Court decision to strike down the law, which he and his allies say is necessary to rein in an activist judiciary that is not accountable to the will of the people.

The anti-judicial overhaul demonstrations are now the longest and largest protest movement in Israeli history.

It started when Netanyahu took back power late last year – leading the most right-wing and religious coalition ever to hold power.

And though judicial reform was barely, if ever, mentioned during Netanyahu’s election campaign, it quickly became the main issue when Justice Minister Yariv Levin announced the sweeping plans days after being sworn in.

The original proposals included reshaping how Supreme Court justices are selected, taking away some of its powers to nullify government actions, significantly limiting the authority of government legal advisers, and even giving parliament the power in certain cases to overturn Supreme Court rulings with a simple majority.

Netanyahu’s coalition said the changes were necessary to rebalance the branches of government, claiming that the Supreme Court had become insular and elitist, and held too much power over the democratically elected legislators. Opponents saw the reforms as a power grab for the ultra-Orthodox and settler movements and as a way to help Netanyahu as he faces an ongoing corruption case – charges he has vehemently denied.

Although aspects of the reforms have been dropped or softened since their initial rollout, the demonstrations have grown and morphed into a wider protest movement against the government, whose far-right ministers like Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir have made controversial statements about Israeli society and about Palestinians that have raised concerns from international allies.

Many Israelis, both those for and against the judicial changes, say Israel is risking tearing itself apart, and that the judicial overhaul is just one aspect of what’s really fueling the divide – the battle between secular and religious, settler and not.

“Every single Western democracy experiences an identity crisis in its third or fourth generation. Who are we?… What are we here for? And in Israel? The crisis is whether we are Jewish and democratic state, or a democratic and Jewish state. What is the 51%? And what is the 49%? Is it a strawberry banana yogurt, or a banana strawberry yogurt?” Segal said.

The judicial overhaul and the government’s actions have not only sparked the massive protest movement that has regularly shut down some of Israel’s busiest roads and highways, but it’s also affected everything from Israel’s military, to its economy, and its international relations.

Thousands of military reservists and even some active duty soldiers have vowed not to serve if the judicial overhaul went into effect. Banks and credit ratings agencies warned about the stability of Israel’s business climate as a result of the reforms. Israel’s famous high-tech community has been unanimous in expressing deep concern over the plans, and Israel’s security establishment, including former military generals, chiefs of staff, Ministers of Defense, and chiefs of Israel’s security and intelligence agencies have said such changes would or have already weakened Israel’s security.

Haim Tomer, who served as the Mossad’s chief of intelligence and then its chief of international liaison – meaning he worked with other nations’ spy agencies –until 2014, told CNN that Israel’s security is weakening because the spirit of the armed forces, the feeling of solidarity and “shared values” have taken a hit.

“The pro-Iran camp, Iraq, Lebanon, and other Shiite forces that actually are following what’s going on see it as a kind of opportunity. (Hezbollah leader) Hassan Nasrallah has said it in his own, I would say very clear-cut phrases, he said, ‘I see that the collapse of Israel has already started. We should wait on the sidelines and see how Israel is ruining itself,’” Tomer said. “So they are looking for an opportunity to help us to give us a little push to this collapse.”

Allies, most notably the United States, have expressed deep concern over the overhaul with President Joe Biden urging Netanyahu only to pass such changes under a broad compromise agreement with opposition parties. A meeting between Netanyahu and Biden in the US has been publicly mooted, though has notably not happened yet as a result of the legislation – highly unusual for two countries that claim to be such stalwart allies.

And Tomer said regional and newer allies, like the United Arab Emirates are also expressing concern.

“The need for unity is not only to be strong, vis a vis our enemies,” Tomer said. “But the need for unity is very much requested to keep up the relations or even to develop relationships with our partners in the region.”

There are reports in Israeli media that Netanyahu is considering announcing he’s agreeing to Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s compromise plan on judicial reform. But until legislation is credibly on the table or passed regarding the law the Supreme Court is weighing this week, the hearings will move forward.

Tomer says a move by the court to strike down the legislation could lead to some major dilemmas for Israel’s security leadership.

“It means that there is a question for the chief of police. Who should he – so to speak – obey? (National Security Minister) Ben Gvir that might ask him in two weeks to stop all licenses for demonstrating on the streets, because he’s against that? Or for the Supreme Court that might say we have a right to demonstrate, the right to strike by our so to speak legal system,” Tomer said.

Meanwhile Netanyahu is heading to the US to speak at the United Nations General Assembly next week as a Biden invitation remains unfulfilled, all the while a possible peace accord between Israel and Saudi Arabia is being hammered out, according to reports.

If Netanyahu wants such achievements, he must do so while also balancing the desires of his coalition partners, whom he needs to remain in power. A deal with Saudi Arabia would likely require serious concession to the Palestinians, which may be a step too far for some of his more ultra-nationalist partners.

“(Netanyahu) lacks the power to actually lead this coalition boat to the destination that he seeks, because he is fully dependent on his far-right partners, so Netanyahu that we know, wants to promote the peace accords with Saudi Arabia and to promote the economy. And yes, to have some judicial reform, but not the full monty,” Segal said. “So what I really think is that unless Netanyahu wakes up and tells his tells his partners that they must go to the direction that he wants to, his government is in danger of falling apart.”

Our platform won’t be used for political campaigns – GBA

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has expressed its dissatisfaction with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo using its conference platform for political campaigning against former President John Mahama.

The GBA’s Public Relations Officer, Saviour Kudze, said in an interview with Citi News, “What the president said today is rather unfortunate and we condemn it. The aspect we condemn has to do with his appeal to Ghanaians, essentially campaigning, urging them to vote against Mahama simply because he commented on President Akufo-Addo allegedly appointing NPP-aligned judges, as stated by President Mahama.”

He noted, “And also bringing up the issue of the investigations allegedly linking former President Mahama to the Airbus scandal. Our platform is not supposed to be used for that and then we condemn that aspect of President Akufo-Addo’s comment. We are not going to allow anybody to use our platform to campaign politically for or against any opponent.”

The GBA clarified that it wouldn’t apologize to Mahama, as they had previously criticized him for engaging in similar behavior. Earlier on Monday, Akufo-Addo rebuked Mahama for recent allegations about the judiciary’s influence by judges aligned with the ruling NPP party.

He characterisd Mahama’s comments as “very dangerous” and contended that they constituted a “brazen attack on the independence of the judiciary.”

The GBA highlighted  that they shared Akufo-Addo’s concerns about judicial independence but didn’t endorse his approach.

“The GBA believes that the best way to protect the independence of the judiciary is to ensure that all politicians, regardless of their party affiliation, respect the rule of law and the separation of powers,” their statement said.

The Association urged all politicians to avoid making political statements during conferences and uphold the legal profession’s impartiality.

  • At least 2,000 people killed and thousands more missing in Libya as ‘catastrophic’ flood breaches dams

At least 2,000 people killed and thousands more missing in Libya as ‘catastrophic’ flood breaches dams

About 2,000 people have lost their lives and many more are missing following Storm Daniel. The storm caused a large amount of rainfall in Libya‘s northeast, which led to the collapse of two dams. This caused water to flow into areas that were already flooded.

Othman Abduljalil, who is the health minister in Libya’s government supported by the parliament in the east, visited the city of Derna on Monday. He described some areas of Derna as a “ghost town. “

Abduljalil said that the situation in Derna was very bad. Dead bodies are still in many places.

Some families are still trapped in their houses and there are people buried under destroyed buildings. I think some people may have been carried away by the sea, and tomorrow morning we will find many of them,” he said.

Around 6,000 people are currently unaccounted for in Derna, according to Abduljalil. However, this is just one area that has been impacted by flooding in multiple cities located near the Mediterranean Sea in the country’s northeast.

There are worries that giving help might be made difficult by political disagreements in the country. This country has had a long-lasting fight for control between two different governments – one in the east and the other in the west.

The heavy rain happened because of a strong low-pressure system. It caused a lot of flooding in Greece and then moved into the Mediterranean Sea. It turned into a tropical-like cyclone called a medicane. The weather system is like storms in the Atlantic or Pacific oceans.

According to a message on social media, on Monday, the Red Crescent Society of Libya said that over 300 people have died in Derna.

Ahmed Mismari, who speaks for the Libyan National Army in the eastern part of Libya, said that two dams broke due to flooding.

As a result, three bridges were broken. The water moved quickly and washed away whole neighborhoods, then left them in the ocean,” he said.

The leader of Libya’s Emergency and Ambulance authority, Osama Aly, told CNN that when the dam broke, all the water flowed towards a place close to Derna, which is a hilly region near the coast.

The strong muddy currents washed away houses in valleys and also carried vehicles and debris. The phone lines in the city are not working, which is making it harder to rescue people. Aly said that the workers cannot go into Derna because there is a lot of damage there.

Aly said that the people in charge didn’t expect the disaster to be so big.

Aly said that the weather conditions were not well looked into. They did not study the levels of seawater, amount of rainfall, or wind speeds. They also did not evacuate families who could be affected by the storm and living in valleys.

Libya was not ready for a big disaster like that. It has never seen such a disastrous event before. We acknowledge that there were mistakes, even though this is the first time we have experienced such a major disaster,” Aly said in an interview with Al Hurra channel.

Mismari, who speaks for the LNA, said that many cities have been affected by the floods. These include Al-Bayda, Al-Marj, Tobruk, Takenis, Al-Bayada, and Battah. The floods have also caused damage along the eastern coast all the way to Benghazi.

Libya is a country with six million people. It has been divided into groups that are fighting against each other since 2014, after a rebellion supported by NATO in 2011 to remove Moammar Gadhafi from power.

There is still a disagreement between rival governments in the city of Benghazi and the capital city Tripoli. Abdulhamid Dbeibeh leads the government of National Unity (GNU) that has the support of the United Nations. They are in charge in the capital city. On the other hand, Khalifa Haftar controls the eastern part of the country along with his Libyan National Army (LNA). They support the parliament led by Osama Hamad, which is based in the east.

Derna, a city that is about 300 kilometers (190 miles) away from Benghazi, is currently governed by Haftar and his administration in the eastern region.

According to a report from Libyan News Agency (LANA), Hamad referred to the situation as “terrible and never seen before. “

Videos posted on social media showed cars underwater, buildings that had fallen down, and a lot of water flowing through the streets.

The hospitals in the eastern city of Bayda were emptied because of heavy rain that caused flooding, as shown in videos posted on Facebook by the Medical Center of Bayda.

The United Nations in Libya is keeping a close eye on the emergency situation caused by bad weather in the eastern region of the country, according to a post by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya on X.

Many countries have sent their sympathies and help to Libya as rescue teams rush to find people alive under the collapsed buildings and wreckage.

On Tuesday, Turkey’s Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that Turkish planes carrying aid for people in need have arrived in Libya.

The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, announced that Turkey will be sending 168 teams to help find and rescue people in Benghazi. They will also be providing aid to help with the situation. The news was reported by the state-run news agency, Anadoulu Agency, on Tuesday.

The US Embassy in Libya said on a social media platform called Twitter that they were talking to the United Nations and Libya’s government to figure out how to quickly provide help where it is most needed.

The President of the United Arab Emirates, Zayed Al Nahyan, has ordered help and rescue teams to be sent to the affected area. He also expressed his sympathy to those affected by the tragedy, according to the state news agency.

Egypt’s President, Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, expressed his sympathy to Libya. El-Sisi said on social media that he hopes the injured people get better soon and wants the crisis in Libya to end quickly with everyone coming together in unity.

The weather system will slowly move to the east and head towards the northern part of Egypt. Rainfall in the next two days might be 50mm, which is a lot compared to the usual 10mm in September.

GII questions govt’s dedication to passing public officers’ conduct bill

Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) doubts government’s commitment to passing Public Officers Bill after President Akufo-Addo’s remarks.

He mentioned that the Attorney General is finalizing work on the Bill to be presented to Cabinet while boasting about his anti-corruption efforts.

“When passed into law, the Conduct of Public Officers Act will follow the example of legislations in other jurisdictions like the United States Ethics in Government Act of 1978, the Public Officers Ethics Act of Kenya of 2003, and the U.K. Constitutional and Governance Act of 2010, in addressing issues regarding financial portfolios held by public officers before assuming public office, links to family business, improper enrichment, care of public property, professional practices, property, investments/shareholdings and other assets, self-dealing, partiality in the performance of duties, use of public or confidential information to further private interest, amongst others,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo revealed this during his speech at the 2023 Bar Conference of the Ghana Bar Association in Cape Coast, Central Region, on September 11, 2023.

However, GII’s Executive Director, Mary Adda, expressed doubts in an interview with Starr News, stating that the government hasn’t exhibited sufficient dedication to passing the Bill for the examination of public officers’ conduct.

“The Bill went through all the deliberations. However, when it went to Parliament during the second reading or so, Parliament rose without passing it. So, if this is a priority of government, it didn’t show in the last parliament. However, in this current government, 2021 onwards, this bill which seeks to criminalize conflict of interest and ensure that the conduct of public officers is within a certain remit has not been dealt with as it should. The current regime is not the best and I can also say that during the last parliament what went to parliament is not the best.”

USAG President assures executives of transparency with association’s finances

The President of the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), Christian N Anderson, has faced criticism from some executives within the association, but he firmly asserts that he will not permit any group of executives to distribute the organization’s funds.

Following the successful organization of the 22nd USAG Congress in Kumasi, reports emerged of dissatisfaction among some executives, with financial matters being a focal point of contention.

However, a statement from USAG Executives has come to the President’s defense, supporting his decision to safeguard the association’s finances.

Dr. Anderson has elaborated on his stance, explaining that after settling the congress expenses and repaying loans incurred for its execution, he has instructed the Financial Controller of the Association to ensure complete transparency and prevent any withdrawal from the association’s coffers.

In an effort to break the pattern where union executives deplete organization funds upon leaving office, the current USAG executive, led by the President, has committed to preserving the funds for the incoming administration.

The General Secretary and Financial Controller, backed by the majority of USAG executives, have strongly expressed their support for the President’s decision and have encouraged NEC and Senate members to endorse it.

USAG leadership has affirmed that Dr. Anderson is not under investigation and is prepared to take legal action against individuals attempting to misuse the association’s funds and tarnish its reputation.

  • Fitch Solutions predicts the Cedi to close 2023 at ¢11.40 per dollar

Fitch Solutions predicts the Cedi to close 2023 at ¢11.40 per dollar

Fitch Solutions has revised its forecast for the Ghanaian cedi, projecting it to conclude 2023 at ¢11.40 against the US dollar, which is a reduction from its previous prediction of ¢12.40 made earlier in the year, when Ghana was still in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for financial assistance.

Furthermore, Fitch Solutions anticipates that the exchange rate will improve to ¢10.90 to the dollar in 2024. This positive trend is expected to be driven by anticipated inflows from the International Monetary Fund program and an increase in investor confidence.

As of now, the cedi is trading at ¢11.53 per dollar in the retail market and ¢11.05 on the interbank market against the US dollar. Following Ghana’s successful securing of the IMF bailout package in May 2023, the local currency has maintained a relatively stable position against the dollar and other major foreign currencies.

“While short-term exchange rate volatility will persist, we believe that the cedi will stabilise once a formal creditors’ committee is formed and the IMF executive board approves Ghana’s programme”, it earlier stated.

The forex market experienced some turbulence last week, with the Ghanaian cedi displaying volatility against the US dollar. This occurred despite the Bank of Ghana’s announcement of plans to conduct FX forward auctions totaling $120 million for the Bulk Oil Distribution Companies in the fourth quarter of 2023, with $20 million allocated for each of the six auctions during this period.

During the week, the local currency depreciated by 0.35% against the US dollar. However, it demonstrated resilience by strengthening by 1.02% and 0.20% against the pound and euro, respectively, in the retail market.

The year-to-date loss of the cedi against the dollar in the retail market was recorded at 11.40%, while in the interbank market, it was estimated to be approximately 22%. These fluctuations added to the choppiness observed in the forex market during the week.

Morocco faces criticism for delayed earthquake response

Morocco is facing criticism for the delayed official response to Friday’s devastating earthquake, which has tragically claimed the lives of over 2,800 people.

The hardest-hit regions, located in the remote areas of the Atlas Mountains, have been awaiting heavy lifting equipment for rescue and recovery efforts.

In many affected areas, villagers have taken it upon themselves to dig through the rubble of collapsed homes in a desperate search for survivors.

Maati Monjib, a human rights activist in Rabat, expressed his bewilderment at why the Moroccan government had not expanded its appeal for international assistance.

Currently, emergency aid has been accepted from four countries: Britain, Spain, Qatar, and the UAE. However, the speed and breadth of the response have left some questioning the adequacy of the relief efforts.

Being stingy is the key to maintaining wealth – Akon

Senegalese-American singer Akon has offered some unconventional advice on wealth.

In his recent appearance on the Impulsive Podcast, Akon stirred controversy by suggesting that stinginess is essential for maintaining riches.

He boldly declared himself as ‘the stingiest man on the planet’ and stressed the importance of financial discipline to stay wealthy.

Akon shared a personal anecdote about his brief ownership of a private jet, which he had to sell after just six months due to the exorbitant maintenance costs surpassing the jet’s purchase price. He recommended that those considering luxury purchases like private jets should opt for rentals when necessary rather than ownership.”

“Whatever you do, do not own a [private] jet. Bro, owning a jet is spending at least 2-3 million dollars a year just for upkeep [maintenance]. You spend more on the maintenance than the actual jet cost,” he said.

Akon also encouraged people to treat their money as if it were meant to last a lifetime. He believed that adopting this mindset would profoundly influence how individuals manage their finances.

“This is the advice I give everybody. The money that you have now has to last you a lifetime. When you reason it that way, you are going to be very prudent.” he argued

The singer’s financial guidance sparked a swift debate on social media. While some applauded his wisdom, others held differing viewpoints.

  • Sammy Gyamfi frustrated by delayed hearing of EC injunction

Sammy Gyamfi frustrated by delayed hearing of EC injunction

A National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sammy Gyamfi has criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to wait for the Chief Justice to provide or certify the date for the injunction hearing against the Electoral Commission as unacceptable.

On JoyNews’ PM Express, Sammy Gyamfi explained that the customary procedure involves the registrar reviewing the court’s calendar and scheduling a hearing date for applicants.

Regarding injunctions, he noted that the court typically allocates a sufficient timeframe to prevent the application from becoming irrelevant.

“We filed this action in the Supreme Court on Thursday, I mean the main writ and consequently filed the application for injunction. We were not given any return date for the injunction application. We were told that the Chief Justice was out of town and she has to certify or approve the date.”

“That is totally unheard of, it is totally unacceptable and it must be stopped. It does not and cannot happen in any serious civilized country built and run on systems. The practice in the past that we all know of as lawyers is that when processes are filed like that, the registrar of the court checks his calendar and gives you a return date.”

Mr. Gyamfi raised concerns about this decision, emphasizing that it is unprecedented for the head of the judiciary in any country to simultaneously serve as the registrar.

He argued that it is inappropriate for the Supreme Court’s judicial processes to be halted simply because the Chief Justice is away.

“Assuming without admitting that even the system was right, the point is every leader must learn to delegate power. Assuming without admitting that what they registered to it is true, indeed the Chief Justice is the one vested with the authority to give us a return date.”

“At least, in the absence of the Chief Justice, the reasonable expectation is that she should be able to delegate one of the justices of the Supreme Court, the practice has always been to delegate the senior most act in her stead. If she is not comfortable with the delegation of the senior most, she can delegate anybody to perform that.”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC),on Thursday, September 7,  along with four other political parties, initiated legal action against the Electoral Commission (EC) concerning its insistence on conducting the 2023 limited voter registration exercise exclusively at its district offices.

This lawsuit, which involves the Convention People’s Party (CPP), All People’s Congress (APC), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), contends that such a decision would disenfranchise a significant number of eligible voters. Consequently, these political parties have petitioned the Supreme Court to halt the electoral management body from proceeding with the exercise until a final determination is reached regarding the substantive matter.

In a Facebook post, former President John Mahama revealed that despite filing the writ and the injunction application at the Supreme Court Registry on Thursday, 7th September 2023, at 2:50 p.m., there has been no progress in the matter.

He argued that when the injunction was submitted, the applicants were informed that the registry was awaiting a date to be scheduled by the Chief Justice, who was outside the jurisdiction at that time.

Mr. Mahama pointed out that even though the Chief Justice has returned to town, there has been no update on the matter, and the EC is preparing to launch the registration exercise tomorrow, which is Tuesday. He expressed his concern, labeling this situation as unprecedented and detrimental to public confidence in the justice delivery system.
