High Court sets date for contempt verdict against K. T. Hammond

Trades Minister, Kobina Tahir Hammond, faces the possibility of a prison sentence as he has been granted until August 31 to provide a valid explanation for his comments on the James Gyakye Quayson trial’s outcome.

The legal representatives of the embattled Assin North MP have been given the same timeframe to present their arguments against the minister.

The High Court’s judgment will be delivered on October 19.

Mr Quayson’s lawyers are asking the High Court to punish Mr Hammond for saying James Quayson may as well leave Parliament since he would end up in jail.

Mr Hammond in an interview with Oyerepa TV compared the Quayson case to that of former legislator Adamu Sakande.

“There is something we call precedence at the court. This is the same thing that happened with Adamu Sakande. He came to this House…the same NDC (National Democratic Congress) members were the ones who sacked him from parliament and took him to court. He was imprisoned and he eventually died and was buried. It is the same matter,” he said.

“They are making all kinds of noise about his swearing-in. I prompted the former deputy Attorney General Dominic Ayine to tell the gentleman that we have seen this before in this House. He should leave this House before he would be jailed,” he said.

In July 2012, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Bawku Central Adamu Dramani Sakande.

He was convicted by an Accra High Court after he was found guilty of perjury and forgery.

This was after he failed to renounce UK Citizenship before contesting for the Bawku seat. He was found guilty of perjury and forgery and was jailed for two years concurrently on all counts.

The court handling the case against Mr Hammond has opted not to hear oral arguments but wants the lawyers to address her through arguments after which she will deliver her ruling.

According to Lasmid, the music star, he pursued a course in mechanical engineering during his time in senior high school (SHS).

Thus, he is able to “impressively” fix some faults with his car when necessary, he said, noting he is not a pro, however.

My ex-husband and I will never be enemies – Ohemaa Mercy

Gospel musician Ohemaa Mercy has expressed a mature and positive outlook on her past marriage. She firmly believes that even though she has chosen to end her marriage, it does not give her the right to harm or tarnish the reputation of her former husband.

Ohemaa Mercy’s approach to avoiding controversies and negative stories about her is to refrain from responding to them. This decision has helped her maintain a clean and positive public image.

During an interview with Sokoohemaa Kukua on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, Ohemaa Mercy emphasized that she and her ex-husband have never been enemies and do not harbor any ill feelings toward each other. They choose to maintain a respectful relationship, demonstrating a level of maturity and understanding beyond the end of their marriage.

”We have never been enemies, and we will never be enemies.”

Ohemaa Mercy said, ”When your enemies are accusing you, look at the positive side and learn from it; do not dwell on the negatives”.

”If there is no understanding and a marriage ends, it does not mean that the gift you have in the man or the children you have together must die or that the life you both have must come to an end. This is for the wise. If your marriage fails, your life does not have to come to an end. As a divorcee, I always pray for him. I always pray for wisdom for him. He called me from the moment I left the marriage to inquire about Tehillah and to offer his support.

It is not about what other people think. I am a different person who bears the mantle of God, and I seek God’s guidance in everything I do. So marriage cannot undo what God has given me. Whether it went well or not, it will not prevent me from carrying out what God has planned for me.”

Ohemaa Mercy added that ”for me leaving out of the marriage, I will not destroy him. We have kids that are also looking up to us and following our footsteps”.

”Our children are all boys, and you need the father to help you raise them. So we talk about our children and make decisions about them. And about my ministry, when he has any idea, he brings it on board.”

The decision of her ex-husband to attend the Tehillah launch this year was one of the surprises for her at the time, she continued.

  • Millions of Britons warned urgently to stop eating smoked salmon

Millions of Britons warned urgently to stop eating smoked salmon

Smoked salmon has been advised to be avoided by pregnant women, older persons, and people with impaired immune systems.

The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) and British food standards agencies have been looking into a listeria outbreak linked to fish.

According to the NHS, listeriosis is a rare condition that can produce symptoms similar to the flu, such as fever, aches and pains, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

After consuming infectious foods including ready-to-eat sandwiches, raw vegetables, unpasteurized milk, and some processed foods like deli meats, symptoms typically appear 24 hours later.

It also includes cured and smoked fish, such as salmon, which health officials warn can be dangerous if consumed while undercooked or past its prime.

Certain populations are at “higher risk of severe illness from listeriosis,” according to a risk assessment by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and its Scottish counterpart.

Anyone expecting a child should stay away from smoked salmon, the FSA and Food Standards Scotland advised Tuesday.

According to the agencies, listeria infections can cause miscarriages or sickness in newborn infants.

The hazards have also been warned about for persons who have cancer, diabetes, liver disease, or generally have weakened immune systems, such as those receiving chemotherapy.

Elderly people, defined as those 65 years of age and over, are also advised to review the FSA’s guidelines on what listeria is and how to lower the risk of infection.

Along with smoked salmon, the FSA also lists smoked trout and gravlax, a speciality of the Nordic region made of fresh salmon preserved in salt and sugar.

According to the organisation, cold-smoked salmon carries a minimal risk of transmitting listeriosis to high-risk persons, but it does carry a significant risk of illness severity.

This indicates that among higher-risk groups, there is a chance for serious disease, hospitalisation, and death.

According to specialists in food safety, several ready-to-eat items can serve as Petri dishes for listeria, providing the bacteria with the ideal environment to grow.

The listeria that might be nestled inside “cold-smoked fish,” which is typically described as “smoked” on the container, and cured fish are not sufficiently heated to eradicate them.

To make sure it is safe to eat, all fish should be fully cooked, or it can be eaten cold after being refrigerated in the refrigerator.

After the first cases of listeria monocytogenes connected to smoked salmon were made public in 2020, health officials began an investigation into these cases.

Data from the NHS shows that there have since been 19 confirmed cases of listeriosis. Four persons passed away.

Professor Robin May, the FSA’s principal scientific advisor, stated that “our risk assessment shows that there is still an ongoing risk to health associated with eating cold-smoked fish for specific groups of vulnerable people, including pregnant women and individuals with impaired immunity.”

We are urging these consumers to stay away from ready-to-eat cold-smoked and cured fish products in light of the risk assessment.

If you fall into the category of persons who are more susceptible to listeria infection and decide to eat these items, we strongly advise that you cook them to a scalding hot temperature throughout first.

This will guarantee that any listeria in the product is eliminated before consumption.

According to Dr. Gauri Godbole, a consultant microbiologist at the UKHSA, “most people who are affected by listeriosis will have no symptoms or experience mild diarrhoea that subsides in a few days.”

“Those who are more susceptible may be at risk of developing severe illnesses like meningitis and sepsis that could be fatal.”

Wife of Tina Turner’s late son intends to have a baby with her husband’s sperm

Afida Turner, the wife of Tina Turner’s late son, recently revealed her intentions to conceive a baby using her husband’s sperm. As a French TV personality, she disclosed that her husband had given her the gift of frozen sperm as a birthday present before his passing in December.

Despite being 46 years old, Afida Turner remains optimistic about her chances of conceiving a child as a tribute to her late husband.

Ronnie Turner, the youngest son of music icon Tina Turner and Ike Turner, sadly passed away last year at the age of 62 after battling cancer. Ronnie was known for his appearance in the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” which portrayed the real-life story of his mother’s challenging relationship with his father.

In the wake of Ronnie’s passing, Afida Turner, his wife and a French TV personality, expressed her heartfelt intention to preserve her late husband’s legacy. By sharing his frozen sperm gift story and her hope to conceive a child as a tribute to him, Afida aims to honor Ronnie’s memory and continue his family’s legacy.

“It’s still bad because he’s not here, but what can I do?” Afida Turner added. “At least I will have a little one that looks like Ronnie. A monster like me and him, can you imagine?”, she is quoted in media reports. It’s been double jeopardy for Afida Turner who has been mourning her late husband and mother-in-law. Tina Turner died in May at the age of 83.

She said since then, her life has been full of grief and nightmares trying to deal with the loss. According to her, her days are filled with memories of Ronnie Turner and his absence. She said as much as people are comforted by their pictures and music, the vacuum they have left in her heart always plays up anytime she goes home.

She conceded that she has been depressed by the turn of events and needed strength to cope with the dark moment. She intimated she is trying not to lose her mind and taking the loss one day at a time.

  • Zelensky commends troops after ‘significant’ breakthrough led to village’s retake

Zelensky commends troops after ‘significant’ breakthrough led to village’s retake

The president of Ukraine has praised his troops for retaking a village in the southeast of the nation, which has been dubbed a “significant” victory in the country’s ongoing counteroffensive.

Volodymyr Zelensky published a video of some soldiers holding the Ukrainian flag yesterday, claiming they had retaken Staromaiorske in the Donetsk area, which is close to the Zaporizhzhia province.

Our South! Zelensky exclaimed. Our men! Praise be to Ukraine!

On Wednesday, he added, “By the way, today our boys had very good results at the front,” to his weekly message. Well done to them!

It occurs while ferocious battle rages on in southeast Ukraine, where, according to a US research tank, Kyiv appears to have launched a “significant” attack that appeared to have “broken through” some Russian defences.

Recent engagements have been fought along a 1,000 km (600 km) front line, with Ukrainian military supported by equipment and training provided by the west.

Russian military bloggers have verified that Ukrainian forces had occupied a portion of the settlement, which was the target of recent Ukrainian attacks.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine has retaken the settlement of Staromaiorske in the southeast.

Although it was unable to objectively confirm Putin’s allegation, he emphasised on state television that the Ukrainian troops’ drive ‘wasn’t successful’ and claimed they incurred significant casualties. At an African leaders’ summit in St. Petersburg, the Russian president was there.

Since beginning their long-awaited counteroffensive in early June, Ukrainian troops have only made marginal gains, and Putin has often asserted that Ukraine has suffered significant losses without providing supporting data.

Generals in Kyiv have issued a warning that the hardened Russian defence line and the significant quantity of land mines that have been sown make quick results all but impossible.

A Western diplomat who was not authorised to openly discuss the topic claimed that Ukraine recently sent thousands of troops to the area.

Few operational information about the counteroffensive’s development have been made public by the authorities.

But on Wednesday, Hanna Maliar, the deputy defence minister, claimed that troops were moving closer to Melitopol, a city in the Zaporizhizhia region.

It would be a big victory for Ukraine to seize Melitopol in the Sea of Azov in order to breach the land border between Russia and the Crimean Peninsula, which Moscow unlawfully annexed in 2014.

That might divide the Russian army in half and cut off supplies to the westward-moving battalions. Currently, Russia is in charge of the entire Sea of Azov shore.

According to a study from the Washington-based Institute of Study of War, Ukrainian forces conducted ‘a large mechanised counteroffensive operation’ in western Zaporizhzhia on Wednesday and ‘look to have broken through certain pre-prepared Russian defensive lines.’

This week, Zelensky travelled to Dnipro, which is located north of Zaporizhzhia along the Dnieper River, where he met with military leaders to talk about air defences, ammunition supplies, and local recruitment.

He also went to a hospital that treated front-line soldiers with wounds. He expressed gratitude to the personnel and stressed the value of their job.

In the meantime, a missile attack in southern Ukraine’s Odesa region resulted in one civilian fatality and significant port infrastructure damage.

According to Governor Oleh Kiper of Odesa, it follows Moscow’s termination of a grain export arrangement.

It appears that the cruise missile was fired from the Red Sea.

Security Patrol Boat and fishing boat did not collide – GPHA

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has provided clarification regarding a reported incident between one of its Security Patrol Boats and a fishing boat on July 27, 2023.

Earlier accounts had indicated that the incident led to the regrettable loss of life among fishermen at sea.

But the GPHA in a statement issued clarified that there was no collision between the Security Patrol Boat and any fishing boat as alleged.

According to the Authority, the incident rather involved the Port Control Station receiving a distress call on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at approximately 0030HRS from MV. SEASPAN DUBAI.

“The security patrol team which comprises the Ghana Navy, Marine Police and GPHA Security timeously responded, cautioned, and asked the said fishing boats to leave. That is at 0118HRS MT. MARINA ‘M’ which was also at the anchorage, also called the Port Control Station for assistance to ward off a suspicious-looking fishing boat with about nine occupants,” the Authority explained.

“The team again responded by cautioning and directing the boat and its occupants to row out. On their way back, the Patrol Team chanced upon another set of fishermen who had cast their nets and were fishing within the terminal 3 basin, close to a container vessel. The nets were seized, and the men were cautioned and led out of the basin,” it added.

The GPHA further emphasized that the unfortunate death of some two fishermen at sea were not caused by any actions involving the Authority’s patrol team.

It also clarified that all patrol activities conducted on July 27, 2023 were halted at 04:55HRS with no incident of collision recorded.

United Nations warns that ‘the era of global boiling has arrived’

The planet was doomed to a climate breakdown according to the UN’s ghoulish warning of an imminent climate catastrophe.

The era of global warming is over, and “the era of global boiling has arrived,” declared by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Scientists claim that July was the hottest month on record for the entire planet.

“Climate change is taking place. This is terrible. Additionally, it is just the beginning,” Guterres told the journalists.

The UN Secretary General declared the end of the world had come during the warmest July.

It is yet possible to keep the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius and prevent the worst effects of climate change.

But only with bold, quick climate action. The need for leadership. Stop being hesitant. Please stop using justifications. Stop for other people to take the initiative. There simply isn’t time left for that.

At the summit on food systems held in Rome by the UN Food and Agriculture Agency, Guterres spoke to the attendees.

He added that the level of fossil fuel profits and inactivity on climate change is “inacceptable,” predicting “unbreathable” air and “unbearable” temperatures in the future.

According to scientists, people are to blame, which is unfair. The only surprise, according to Guterres, is the rate of change.

His statements made clear how close the earth is to disaster following weeks of record high temperatures, catastrophic weather, and flames engulfing significant areas of Europe.

He emphasised that in order to prevent “the worst,” which is still to come, collective action is required, “not despair.”

Social media trolls do not affect me anymore – KiDi

Musician KiDi recently disclosed that his life underwent a remarkable transformation when he made the decision to take a break from music in March of this year.

In an exclusive interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, the renowned artist, best known for his hit song ‘Odo,’ opened up about how this much-needed hiatus provided him with a valuable opportunity for introspection. Specifically, he delved into how he learned to navigate the challenges of dealing with online trolls and false rumors that often circulate on the internet.

During his well-deserved break, KiDi experienced a profound shift in his mindset, leading to significant personal growth and a deeper understanding of himself. He made it clear that the person he is now in comparison to who he was back in February showcases a positive and transformative evolution, all of which happened during his time away from the intense glare of the spotlight.

One major realization KiDi had during his break was learning not to take social media trolls seriously.

According to him, he now understands that many individuals who engage in negative behavior online are likely projecting their frustrations and unhappiness onto others, including celebrities like himself.

“I now know that when people come on social media and say the things they say, it’s not really about me. Some of them are unhappy in life. If you are unhappy, you take that out on anything and everything,” he said.

KiDi also opened up about the difficult choice he had to make a few months ago to cancel his highly-anticipated US tour. The tour, originally planned to cover ten cities in the US, had to be called off to prioritize his health and well-being.

During that time, false rumors began to circulate, suggesting that KiDi had suffered a stroke. Swiftly, he took to his social media platforms to debunk these untrue claims, setting the record straight about his health status.

Recognizing the importance of self-care, both physically and mentally, KiDi took the necessary time to focus on his well-being. Now, with a renewed sense of vigor and determination, he affirmed that he is fully back and more than ready to wholeheartedly pursue his passion for music once again.

  • Young daughter watches in confusion as Trump signs her hand with permanent marker

Young daughter watches in confusion as Trump signs her hand with permanent marker

A young girl’s bewildered expression was left when former President Donald Trump signed her hand with a permanent marker.

Trump approached a metal barricade with supporters on the opposite side while he was at a campaign rally. The girl was sitting on her father’s shoulders when he reached out and shook her hand, as seen in a video posted to Twitter by PatriotTakes.

The girl’s right hand was then signed by the former president while her father and she looked on. Trump shook her father’s hand and spoke briefly with him as the daughter sat looking at her signed hand.

Trump went on to sign the white hat of another fan.

It was unclear exactly what Trump had written on the girl’s hand or if it was an autograph.

It appeared to be “Hi!” according to a Twitter user, and PatriotTakes confirmed it could be the case.

Trump has done it in the past as well.

Another video tweeted by PatriotTakes shows Trump signing another young girl’s right hand in March while seated at a table at his Mar-a-Lago estate. As Trump continued to write, her mother grinned and laughed while making the remark, “You can never shower again.”

You have no idea, Trump remarked.

Trump is infamous for signing legislation into law using a thick, permanent black marker.

The most recent signing was a lighter moment for Trump, who is now under investigation for several things that may not preclude him from running for president but may hurt his chances of winning re-election.

Despite being charged with a crime twice—once by the Manhattan district attorney for his alleged involvement in a hush payment to a porn star and once by special counsel Jack Smith for his alleged handling of sensitive information—Trump has continued to campaign.

The former president could also face a third charge after his attorneys met with Smith’s prosecutors on Thursday to discuss a grand jury investigation into the Capitol incident on January 6 and Trump and his associates’ attempts to rig the 2020 election. Trump stated last week that he anticipates being detained and indicted once more.

Trump continues to be the favourite to win the Republican nomination in 2024. The Keystone State will host his first speech since he declared his candidature at his upcoming campaign rally on Saturday night in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Lawyers for Donald Trump ‘told to expect indictment in 2020 election probe’

The investigation into attempts to rig the 2020 election is expected to end in an indictment, according to reports from prosecutors who allegedly briefed former President Donald Trump‘s counsel.

Todd Blanche and John Lauro, two of Trump’s attorneys, met with prosecutors in Jack Smith’s office, according to three people who spoke with NBC News on Thursday morning. According to two of them, prosecutors warned Trump’s legal counsel to anticipate an indictment.

A grand jury heard testimony as part of its investigation into Trump and his associates’ attempts to rig the 2020 presidential election on Thursday at the federal courtroom in Washington, DC.

According to CNN, a prosecutor working for Smith and jurors were seen entering the courthouse on Thursday morning. The last time the grand jury was spotted at the courthouse was last week; they generally meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The news comes nine days after Trump declared he had gotten a letter from Smith claiming that the grand jury is looking into the January 6 Capitol riot and attempts to rig the election, and that Smith is the subject of their investigation. Trump stated that he anticipated being detained and charged.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Smith’s letter included three federal laws, including witness tampering, denial of rights, and conspiracy to defraud the US.

On January 6, 2021, Trump urged his followers to challenge the election results. In an effort to prevent Congress from recognising the election results for Joe Biden, an irate mob rushed the Capitol building.

It would be Trump’s second federal indictment. In June, Smith filed a criminal complaint against Trump for allegedly handling secret materials improperly while transporting them from the White House to Mar-a-Lago.

In the Manhattan district attorney’s investigation into his alleged involvement in a hush payment to porn star Stormy Daniels, Trump was also criminally charged in April. Trump has maintained that the 2020 election investigation is a witch hunt and entered not guilty pleas in both instances.

On Thursday afternoon, Trump posted to his Truth Social platform that his ‘attorneys had a productive meeting with the DOJ (Department of Justice) this morning, explaining in detail that I did nothing wrong, was advised by many lawyers, and that an Indictment of me would only further destroy our Country’.

Trump also denied the assertion made by NBC News that prosecutors had informed his attorneys to anticipate an indictment.

Trump writes, “No indication of notice was given during the meeting.” “Do not believe anything you read online!”

Carbon monoxide poisoning cause of three US marine’s demise – Investigators

Carbon monoxide poisoning, according to investigators, killed the three US marines who were discovered dead outside a petrol station in North Carolina.

Three marines were discovered unconscious inside a car that had been parked at a petrol station about 30 miles south of Camp Lejeune by sheriff’s deputies in North Carolina on Sunday morning.

Their deaths were “consistently due to carbon monoxide poisoning,” the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner stated on Wednesday.

The names of the three marines were given as Lance Corporal Tanner J. Kaltenberg, 19, Lance Corporal Merax C. Dockery, 23, and Lance Corporal Ivan R. Garcia, 23.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, at 8.30 p.m., the marines’ first missing persons complaint was made after Lance Corporal Dockery’s parents got concerned after he failed to return home to Oklahoma on a planned flight.

The three marines were discovered about 30 minutes later in a Speedway convenience store in Hampstead.

Burning gasoline, especially that from moving cars, releases carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless gas.

The Centres for Disease Control estimate that 400 Americans die from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning each year. As a result of the gas, 14,000 more individuals are hospitalised.

The authorities refused to say if the marines’ poisoning was done on purpose or by accident.

Brigadier General Michael McWilliams expressed his condolences and sincere sympathies to the friends, family, and coworkers of Lance Cpls. Kaltenberg, Dockery, and Garcia.

The general declared, “Our focus is on providing the necessary resources and support to those impacted by their tragic loss as they navigate this incredibly trying time.”

Local North Carolina officials also expressed their sympathy.

Pender County Sheriff Alan Cutler expressed his sadness over the tragic and enduring deaths of the three young men, who had all rendered honourable service to their country. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and coworkers at this time,” the statement reads.

Body parts discovered in three different bags by police in Florida

After an unidentified woman’s body was discovered in three different suitcases and thrown in a canal, police in Florida are looking for answers.

The victim was discovered last week in the Intracoastal Waterway in Delray Beach, a network of canals that extends parallel to the town’s coastline.

Last Friday, when a resident saw a suitcase floating in the canal with what appeared to be a body part hanging out, they called the police.

Delray Beach Police Chief Russ Mager stated at a press conference that “within a few hours of this particular call, we received two other calls regarding other suitcases that were floating just south of this location.”

Investigators found human remains in the other two luggage as well, and they quickly realised that all three belonged to the same person.

The victim’s identity is still unknown. She was about 5’4″ tall and had brown hair. Detectives think she was either Caucasian or Latin American, and between the ages of 35 and 55.

We suspect the victim was placed in the water between Monday, July 17 and the early hours of Thursday, July 20, based on her condition. stated Sgt. Casey Kelly.

The luggage also held some of her apparel, including a floral top, a black shirt, and some black shorts. Her top’s manufacturer was identified as Betzabe, which investigators suspect to be a Brazilian company.

Police refused to disclose how they thought the person was killed because it was “sensitive case information.”

In order to identify the suspect and find out more details about the incident, investigators are seeking for the public’s assistance. Locals are currently being asked to search the video from their own security cameras.

“We request that you look out for any unusual vehicles or people, especially anyone moving or carrying luggage,” Added Sgt. Kelly.

Chief Mager continued, “No information is too small.”

Police published photos of two of the suitcases the victim was found in on Thursday.

While the other is green with white polka dots, one suitcase was purple. Pink ribbon seems to be tying the two together.

A photorealistic recreation of the victim’s face and attire was included in the artist’s depiction of the victim that was also made public.

According to the Delray Police, “These reconstructed images are not an exact likeness of the victim or her clothing and are simply the artist’s interpretation.”

  • Bus driver who ran over a grandmother imprisoned

Bus driver who ran over a grandmother imprisoned

A bus driver who drove over a grandmother of three because he believed, incorrectly, that she had previously tried to go without paying was sentenced to prison.

As a result of her terrible injuries, Joan Scott, who was 83 at the time of the incident, had to have both of her legs amputated.

She attempted an attempt to board a double-decker bus run by Scott Cliff on September 19, 2021 at Battle Hill Drive in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear.

Cliff locked the doors and began to drive away as Mrs. Scott entered the vehicle, trapping her walking stick inside.

Mrs. Scott, a local resident, was dragged beneath the bus’ wheels.

Her left leg was amputated on the spot, and her right leg was amputated in a hospital a few hours later.

Cliff was sentenced to 27 months in prison today at Newcastle Crown Court for endangering others while driving recklessly.

‘The bus driver didn’t even allow her the option to produce the bus pass she had with her, all because he felt he recognised her as not previously paid a fare or having a bus pass she had with her,’ said Mrs. Scott’s granddaughter Sarah after the sentencing.

He chose to close the bus doors in her face in order to forbid her from boarding. Who could possibly do that? She is in her 80s and didn’t plan to hurt anyone.

The bus driver’s actions two years ago, according to Mrs. Scott’s son Brian, “took the head of my family in such a shocking way.”

She is imprisoned in a damaged body that was brought on only by the deeds of one person, he said.

By offering a place of safety on the bus, Mr. Cliff maintained a position to aid and protect the weak. It hurts me that he didn’t do that for my mother.

This may have been avoided if Mr. Cliff had treated my mother with more kindness and respect.

He has ruined our family, and we hope that this horrific occurrence will alert other motorists to pay attention.

“My grandma is no longer herself in any way, shape, or form,” Brian’s son Jack continued. I used to take her out to lunch very frequently because she was such a busy woman who was out and about all day. We would spend a lot of time together just sitting and talking.

However, it is no longer feasible. She would be extremely upset if she was left alone for even a short period of time. My heart is breaking for you.

Cliff agreed to driving recklessly and causing significant injury, claiming that he would not have done so if he had known Mrs. Scott’s walking stick was in the way as he pulled away.

PC Catherine Lloyd, who handled the inquiry, commended Mrs. Scott’s family for their perseverance and cooperation throughout the trying process.

“What happened that evening was truly tragic, with irrevocable consequences,” she stated.

“There is no question that Cliff’s actions have ruined more than one life forever, and it should act as a harrowing reminder to everyone as to what can happen if you are behind the wheel of a vehicle and act carelessly, dangerously, or without due consideration to others.”

  • British Gas reports profits of about £1,000,000,000, an increase of 889 percent

British Gas reports profits of about £1,000,000,000, an increase of 889 percent

In the first half of 2023, British Gas revealed record profits of approximately $1 billion.

A ‘another symptom of the flawed energy system’ in the UK, according to critics, was the owner of the energy behemoth Centrica nearly doubling its profit to £2.1 billion.

At its gas and electricity delivery division, underlying earnings increased by 889% to £969 million in the six months ending June 30 from £98 million a year earlier.

In the first half of the year, Ofgem’s price cap was responsible for around half of the profit.

The shift, according to Centrica, allowed them to recover losses of about £500 million from a year earlier.

Consumer advocacy organisations that defend suffering households from unfair business practises are incensed by the company’s record revenues.

The gains are yet another indicator of Britain’s dysfunctional energy system, according to Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition.

‘At a time when household energy debt is reaching record highs and energy costs are still double what they were a few years ago, the profits posted will be met with scepticism by people battling to survive the crisis.

Questions about how these profits were made will undoubtedly arise, but the truth is that energy companies are competing on a level playing field that has been established by the government.

People will understandably inquire as to what the government is doing to stop these profits and repair our damaged energy infrastructure.

Amid volatility in the world’s energy markets, Centrica more than tripled its adjusted operating profit last year, which eventually reached £3.3 billion.

  • Martin Lewis gives serious warning to people holding £8,000 in their bank account

Martin Lewis gives serious warning to people holding £8,000 in their bank account

Martin Lewis has included new tips to assist consumers maximise their financial resources during interest rate increases.

According to The Money Saving Expert, rates for savings accounts and Cash ISAs have both increased as a result of the ongoing Bank of England interest rate hikes.

According to him, this may translate into savings account interest gains of hundreds of pounds for those who shop about for the best rates.

He has already done the legwork for savers by recommending the current top rates for people with savings of at least £8,000.

His recommendation is to “ditch it” if you opened a Cash ISA more than six months ago because the rate “will be terrible.”

Due to taxes, he claimed, customers would receive more interest in an ISA than in a typical savings account.

It’s time for millions to reopen cash ISAs, Martin Lewis stated on the most recent episode of The Martin Lewis Podcast on BBC Sounds.

Anyone with £8,000 in savings should check right away to see if their money is in a cash ISA because the top pay 5.7% and interest rates are rising.

Cash ISAs often pay a little less than the corresponding regular savings. Thus, it is only for those who would pay taxes.

“So it’s about over £8,000 for a lower rate taxpayer and £16,000 for a higher rate taxpayer. Over those amounts is when you want to start looking at it.”

Martin then walked listeners through the best solutions available right now. On simple access savings, Chip pays 4.51%, he stated. Normal savings surpass cash ISAs because the top Cash ISAs, Leeds Building Society and Principality, pay 4.2%.

yet, if you are paying taxes, the chip’s tax rate is 4.5%; yet, if you were paying 20% tax on the chip, your equivalent rate would be 3.16%.

‘If you were paying 40% tax, your equivalent rate is 2.7%, significantly less than you would get in a cash ISA,’ says the calculator.

The best bank accounts for right now are then encouraged to be checked out, Martin suggested.

The top one-year fix in regular savings, he noted, is offered by Vanquis Bank at 6.15%. The top cash ISA one-year fix rate from Natwest is 5.7%.

Some individuals who locked into cash ISAs ought to cancel them and pay the associated fees.

In general, it is advised to withdraw from a Cash ISA if you opened it more than six months ago.

If you had locked in your rates more than six months ago, they would have been very high.

“You will have to pay a penalty to get out,” she said, “but generally, you will earn more in the new ISA than the interest penalty will cost you because an interest penalty where the interest isn’t that much.”

  • DVLA warns all drivers who passed their test before 2014

DVLA warns all drivers who passed their test before 2014

Drivers, please pay attention. Making a simple check now could prevent you from receiving a hefty £1,000 fine. Given the current state of the economy, you probably could spend that money better elsewhere.

Anyone who took their test prior to 2014 should take note of an important announcement published by the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency) to avoid breaking the law.

Anyone who took their test prior to 2014 must make sure their driver’s licence hasn’t expired as it must be updated at least once every ten years in order for the photocard to accurately depict them.

Richard Evans, head of technical services at WeBuyAnyCar, reportedly stated to the Swindon Advertiser: “To drive anywhere lawfully, you must carry a valid driving licence with the most up-to-current and accurate data of your name, date of birth, and full address.

“It’s imperative that you update your licence if you are aware that it is about to expire or if your personal information has changed.

The DVLA warns that failing to hold a valid licence might result in a £1,000 fine and perhaps the seizure of your car.

When should my driver’s licence be renewed?

The ‘Due to Renew’ government campaign informs people that they need to renew their driver’s licence every ten years.

If you are over 70, this does, however, change every three years.

Where is the license’s expiration date located?

The dates of your license’s expiration are shown in section 4b on the front of the card.
How to have your licence renewed

The DVLA website is the most convenient place to renew your driver’s licence if you are between the ages of 29 and 69.

However, a survey conducted in 2021 revealed that just 35% of participants were aware that you could renew your driver’s licence online.

Online renewals cost £14 and are typically processed in five days.

You can also pay £17 for a postal renewal instead of the £21.50 required at a Post Office location.

  • Martin Lewis gives serious warning to British tourists this summer

Martin Lewis gives serious warning to British tourists this summer

Martin Lewis has issued a warning to vacationers about a rental car trap that results in consumers paying exorbitant insurance fees.

The money-saving expert claimed in his newsletter that horror stories offered to clients when they pick up their cars induce them to pay for “excess cover insurance.”

“Car hire usually comes with basic insurance,” he claimed. “However, at the pick-up desk, they almost always try to push you to get ‘excess cover insurance,’ which can cost up to £25/day, using scare stories of huge bills for just a scratch – or sometimes implying you have to do it.”

It is preferable to purchase insurance in advance, which might run drivers as little as £2 per day.

Mr. Lewis further cautioned that the pick-up desk might try to claim that the pre-purchased insurance won’t be effective while pressuring Britons to submit a £1,000 refundable deposit.

As long as you have one, it’s not a problem, he said. Just remain composed and carry on.

Compare the Market, Go Compare, Money Saving Expert, and other comparison websites all have affordable auto insurance options.

If they reserve with vehicle rental companies or outlets located outside the airport, drivers could save up to £200.

Mr. Lewis cautioned against renting items like satnavs or child car seats because they can cost more to rent than to purchase outright.

Holidaymakers can also check a child’s car seat for free with several flights.

  • Second US drone ‘attacked’ by Russian fighter plane over Syria

Second US drone ‘attacked’ by Russian fighter plane over Syria

This unsettling incident occurred when a Russian fighter jet ‘struck’ a second US drone over Syria in less than 24 hours.

The sixth alleged incident this month was captured on camera when the plane flew metres away from the MQ-9 Reaper, flared at it, and reportedly damaged it.

The attack was disclosed by the White House on Wednesday, along with the statement that Russian warplanes had come perilously close to American manned and unmanned aircraft, endangering pilots.

Unnamed two US officials confirmed that the drone was hit by the strike and suffered damage.

According to the US, this is when a Russian plane fired flares at their drone above Syria.

However, neither the incident nor the White House’s strategy for countering Russian aggression were made explicit.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “We have seen the reports, the early reports, of a second Russian fighter aircraft this week flying dangerously close to our drone.” The aircraft was on a mission to battle Islamic State extremists in Syria.

She claimed that Russia violated international conventions by “approaching closely and deploying flares over US drones during a routine mission.”

It took place only a few hours after a Russian fighter jet fired flares at a US drone over Syria as it flew within a few metres of it.

But a top Russian military official claimed that the US was at fault for the most recent incident.

The drone came perilously close to two Russian jets early on Wednesday, according to Rear Adm. Oleg Gurinov, commander of the Russian military’s Reconciliation Centre in Syria.

According to Gurinov, the Su-34 and Su-35 Russian aircraft‘s onboard systems identified the target aircraft and triggered the automated flare deployment.

In a statement cited by the Interfax news agency, Gurinov said that “the United States are continuing to mislead the public about the illegal flights of its drones in the Syrian airspace that have not undergone deconflicting procedure while accusing the Russian side of dangerous manoeuvring.”

  • State of emergency declared in Rhodes as wildfire sends fireball into blood-red sky

State of emergency declared in Rhodes as wildfire sends fireball into blood-red sky

Several large explosions at an air force ammunition stockpile have been brought on by wildfires in Greece.

In central Greece’s Volos region, raging fires eventually spread to the military installation in Nea Anchialos due to strong winds.

As the area was previously evacuated, officials have confirmed there have been no injuries reported, according to ITV.

Greek F-16 fighter bombs and ammo were reportedly kept at the location, according to local media.

The sequence of big explosions on the nearby homes reportedly caused windows to break.

The local villages have not reported any injuries, according to the fire department.

Twelve communities in the Volos-Nea Anchialos region were told to evacuate, according to Fire Service spokesman Ioannis Artopios.

Our men failed to put out the fire despite their extraordinary efforts, he claimed.

In addition to delaying national rail services travelling through the area, the blaze caused the closure of a portion of Greece’s main roadway and burnt on three fronts.

Achilleas Beos, the mayor of the city of Volos, urged the remaining villagers’ citizens to heed the evacuation order, noting that about 80% of them had already departed. Numerous locals, according to the coastguard, were transported to Volos on small private boats.

The police in Rhodes have declared a state of emergency, and they claim that this is the biggest fire evacuation effort the nation has ever seen.

Up to 10,000 British tourists may have been impacted by the evacuation of thousands of tourists from the nation.

Rhodes residents beg for assistance, saying, “We have no control over the fire.”

On the island of Rhodes, about 19,000 people have been evacuated, while at least 2,500 people have also left Corfu.

Due to the rising flames, tourists were forced to leave hotels and were forced to walk through temperatures above 40°C while sleeping on sun lounger cushions on the ground.

There have been requests for the Foreign Office to modify its recommendation that people should postpone all but absolutely necessary travel to Rhodes.

Extreme temperatures have been created by the Cerberus and Charon heatwaves in southern Europe, with Gythio in Greece topping the records so far with 46.4C.

British adolescent passes away after collapsing in an Ibiza nightclub

It has been reported that a British adolescent who collapsed at an Ibiza nightclub early this morning has passed away in the hospital.

Around 5 a.m. this morning, the 19-year-old was taken by ambulance from an undisclosed club to the hospital.

Before the paramedics got there, he allegedly had a heart attack.

At around 6.30 am, he was reportedly stabilised at the site and transported to Can Misses Hospital on the island’s capital.

Less than an hour later, at the same hospital, he passed away.

Although the nightclub where he passed out has not yet been identified, it is thought to be on the route connecting San Antonio, a popular party destination, with Ibiza Town.

The Amnesia nightclub, which is close to the settlement of San Rafael on the road connecting San Antonio and Ibiza Town, is where sources claim the teenager passed out.

Last night, it hosted Bresh, a weekly party that takes place during the summer.

Every Thursday from June 8 through August 31st, BRESH! lands at Amnesia, according to an entry on its website.

The mysterious party, featuring top performers, has travelled to more than twenty countries and is again returning to Ibiza, the most picturesque party on earth.

The patient admitted to Can Misses was a “19-year-old British national,” according to a local health source.

“The first call came in at 4.50 this morning,” he stated.

A 19-year-old male had suffered a cardiac arrest at a nightclub on the highway connecting San Antonio and Ibiza Town. Emergency personnel were sent to the scene.

The first responders on the scene revived him from cardiac arrest, stabilising him before transferring him to Can Misses Hospital.

Despite efforts to rescue him, he was declared dead at 7.22 am today despite being admitted to Can Misses A&E at 6.30 am.

An investigation into the death was confirmed by a police spokesman, who stated: “We are investigating and waiting for the post-mortem results.”

An informed source indicated that as part of the investigation, the issue of whether the deceased adolescent had drank alcohol or drugs prior to passing out would be looked into.

At this point, there is no official information indicating that he had used alcohol or narcotics prior to experiencing a cardiac arrest.

It is currently unknown whether he resided on the island or was visiting, as well as whether he was travelling alone or with friends.

  • Soldiers declare coup on country’s television network in Niger

Soldiers declare coup on country’s television network in Niger

The Niger population has been informed by mutinous soldiers that a coup is being carried out to remove the president.

Today on official television, the organization—which refers to itself as the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Country (CLSP)—made the news.

They asserted that the “defence and security forces” had taken over the country in West Africa as a result of “declining security and poor economic and social governance.”

After president Mohamed Bazoum and his wife were held in the presidential palace, colonel-major Amadou Abdramane advised “external partners” not to interfere.

In Niamey, people gathered outside the structure on the banks of the Niger River to demonstrate against the takeover, but they dispersed shortly.

Other forms of support for the Western-backed leader, however, appear to have persisted, as evidenced by Hassoumi Massoudou, the minister of international affairs, who thinks there is still time to undo the coup.

There was an attempted coup, but of course, we cannot accept it, he told France24. We urge all Nigerien democratic patriots to unite and say “no” to this contentious action that has the potential to reverse decades of national development.

The president should be released without conditions, Mr. Massoudou continued, adding that negotiations are still ongoing.

The Economic Community of West African States’ president of Benin, Patrice Talon, is anticipated to serve as the mediator.

This morning, Mr. Bazoum tweeted, “The hard-won achievements will be safeguarded. All Nigerians who value freedom and democracy will make sure of it.

Local observers claim that general Tchiani, the president’s intended replacement for the head of the presidential guard, is to blame for the coup.

The national army of the French-speaking nation swore allegiance to the CLSP today, citing the need to “avoid a deadly confrontation between the various forces” as justification.

Since achieving independence from France in 1960, Mr. Bazoum has served as Niger’s first democratically elected president.

The leader is supported by the West because to his actions against Islamic State and al-Qaida-linked jihadists who have taken control of nations in Africa’s Sahel region, which is a transitional area between the Sahara and the Sudanese savanna.

Niger was regarded as one of the few remaining glimmers of stability in a region of the continent infamous for its almost never-ending series of coups.

The widespread consensus is that Niger’s security situation is better than many of its neighbours, despite the fact that it has seen terrorist attacks on civilians and military personnel.

Most African nations, including several in other parts of Africa, have attempted to break their ties to the West but have instead turned to Russia.

In the border region of Mali, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a rich businessman, replaced French forces with fighters from the Russian mercenary organisation Wagner.

Wagner is reportedly gaining ground in Burkina Faso, a country that borders Niger.

A picture of Prigozhin allegedly shaking the hand of a man in a suit who is purported to be an ambassador from the Central African Republic appeared just today.

According to reports, only 17 leaders attended the Russia-Africa conference today in St. Petersburg; this was a humiliating setback for Putin, which the Kremlin attributed to pressure from the West.

The new administration in Niger will worry the West that it may lead to a turn towards Russia.

Foreign Minister Andrew Mitchell of the UK stated that his country “condemns in the strongest terms” any effort to undermine the stability and democracy of Niger.

Catherine Colonna, the foreign minister of France, declared that her nation “firmly condemns any attempt to take power by force.”

What you should know about the Niger coup:

The National Council for the Safeguarding of the Country’s ‘defence and security forces’ have made an attempt to topple President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger.

In the nation’s first peaceful transition of power since it earned independence from France in 1960, he is the first democratically elected president.

He enjoys the backing of the West in the struggle against jihadists affiliated with the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.

There are worries that the new government would succumb to more extremists and follow the lead of neighbouring nations by turning to Russia.

Both demonstrations in support of the coup and those against it have taken place.

Mr. Bazoum and his ministers exhort the people of Niger to resist and “safeguard democracy.”

Six times the legal drinking limit drunk pilot arrested

An airline pilot was discovered to be six times above the legal drinking limit and received a one-year sentence with probation.

After failing an alcohol breathalyser test, the 63-year-old United Airlines pilot was removed off a Boeing 777 by French authorities and brought into jail.

Police claimed the American pilot had a “pasty mouth, glassy eyes, and difficulty expressing himself” when they discovered him.

His blood alcohol content was 0.59 mg/l and 0.56 mg/l, which is six times the French limit for flight crew.

He was scheduled to be the pilot of flight UA331 to Washington, DC, but was detained moments before takeoff.

It was necessary to abruptly cancel the flight.

The pilot’s allegation that he had only two glasses of wine before being arrested was disputed by the judges.

He received a €4,500 fine and a 12-month flight ban to and from France.

The safety of our passengers and employees is always our top priority, United Airlines informed PYOK.

We have a strong no-tolerance alcohol policy and demand the highest standards of all of our personnel.

“This employee was terminated from employment immediately, and we are fully cooperating with local authorities,” the company stated.

  • More than 200 deaths in Mexico from extreme heat since March

More than 200 deaths in Mexico from extreme heat since March

249 people have passed away due to extreme heat during the last four months, according to data from Mexico’s Ministry of Health.

There were 100 confirmed fatalities in Nuevo León, 28, in Tamaulipas, 26, in Veracruz, and 26, in Sonora between March 19 and July 22. The remaining deaths were reported in 12 additional states.

The government also kept track of 3,169 “cases associated with extreme natural temperatures.”

Heat has been affecting the nation and the southern US states due to a “heat dome,” a weather phenomena brought on by a ridge of high pressure trapping air inside as temperatures climb.

Late last month, temperatures topped 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) in several parts of some Mexican states, setting records for the month.

The current week is showing similar trends. Temperatures will exceed 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) in at least two states (Baja California and Sonora). Between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius will be the temperature in five other states.

According to figures provided by the Secretariat, the majority of the deaths—roughly 157, or 63%—were reported during the “third heat wave” of the four waves anticipated for 2023.

Government data reveals that “heat stroke” accounts for 92.4% of fatalities, with dehydration being the reason in the remaining instances.

“52 associated cases and four deaths were reported nationwide” between July 16 and July 22.

On those same days a year ago, the government reported “282 cases associated with extreme natural temperatures and 38 deaths nationwide, of which seven are attributable to the third heat wave and were notified late.”

The government suggests avoiding the sun as much as possible, particularly between the hours of 11 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon, and drinking at least two litres of bottled, boiled, or sterilised water “frequently” to counteract high temperatures.

They recommend dressing appropriately, using sunscreen, and donning helmets or caps.

  • Wagner chief Prigozhin spotted in Russia first time since uprising

Wagner chief Prigozhin spotted in Russia first time since uprising

The founder of the Wagner private military firm, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was last seen inside Russia last month when he oversaw an armed uprising against the Russian military.

Prigozhin was reportedly seen in St. Petersburg meeting with an African dignitary outside of the Russia Africa summit, according to reports from the mercenary organisation.

The representative from the Central African Republic is a summit participant. As previously reported by CNN, Wagner has a presence in the Central African Republic.

The image of Prigozhin with the dignitary was geolocated to the Trezzini Palace Hotel in St. Petersburg, which is where, according to Russian media, the founder of Wagner has maintained an office. On July 6, following the uprising, Russian officials searched a number of places, including the hotel.

Since then, Prigozhin has only been captured on camera once, on July 19, when he appears to be in Belarus and appears to be introducing Wagner warriors at a facility in Asipovichy.

Longtime ally of Russian President Vladimir, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, claimed to have persuaded Putin not to “destroy” Wagner and Prigozhin during the uprising.

In a video, Prigozhin appears to be out in public for the first time since the revolt.

One of Putin’s long-lasting obstacles came from Prigozhin’s uprising.

Prigozhin, who typically prefers to work in the shadows, was propelled into the public eye after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, with Wagner mercenaries playing a crucial part in numerous fights.

Since the 1990s, Prigozhin and Putin have been friends. By gaining large catering contracts with the Kremlin, Prigozhin amassed fortune and earned the title of “Putin’s chef.”

It was after the 2014 Russian-backed separatist struggle in the Donbas in eastern Ukraine that he allegedly changed into a vicious warlord.

Wagner was established by Prigozhin as a shady mercenary group that fought in Ukraine and, increasingly, for causes supported by Russia throughout the world.

In the Central African Republic, Sudan, Libya, Mozambique, Ukraine, and Syria, CNN has traced Wagner mercenaries. They have established a terrible reputation through time and have been connected to several violations of human rights.

Wagner soldiers played a significant role in capturing the Ukrainian cities of Soledar and Bakhmut following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The Wagner forces occasionally appeared to be the only ones defeating the Ukrainians on the Russian side.

However, Prigozhin frequently criticised the support the Russian military establishment provided for his forces.

In one particularly gruesome video from the beginning of May, Prigozhin pointed a gun directly at Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defence minister, and Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the head of the Russian armed forces.

As he gestures towards the bodies behind him and remarks, “The blood is still fresh,” They are perishing so you can sit like fat cats in your opulent offices because they came here as volunteers.

  • Singapore kills woman over drug trafficking for first time in almost 20 years

Human rights organisations have denounced Singapore‘s Friday execution of a woman for trying to trade an ounce of heroin, calling it a “grim milestone” for the city-state and its infamously harsh anti-drug laws. It had been almost two decades since a woman had been put to death.

In a statement issued a few hours after Singaporean Saridewi Djamani, 45, was hanged on Friday in Changi Prison, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) made the announcement.

She received the obligatory death sentence in 2018 after being found guilty of transporting 31 grammes of heroin.

The CNB stated that she received “full due process under the law and was represented by legal counsel throughout the process,” noting that Singapore’s rules allow for the death penalty to be applied to trafficking offences involving amounts of heroin greater than 15 grammes.

Since the 36-year-old hairstylist Yen May Woen was hanged in 2004 for drug trafficking, Saridewi is the only woman to have been executed by hanging in Singapore.

Singapore continues to have some of the strictest drug regulations in the world, and its government is adamant that the death penalty is effective at discouraging drug traffickers and preserving public safety.

The mandatory death penalty is imposed on anyone found guilty of trafficking, importing, or exporting a particular amount of illegal substances including methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, or cannabis products.

Since beginning executions for drug convictions last year, Singapore has now hanged 15 individuals, including foreigners and a man with intellectual disabilities. Activists claim this is an accelerated pace after the country took a two-year break due to the pandemic.

According to the CNB, “capital punishment is only used for the most serious crimes, such as the trafficking of significant amounts of drugs that cause very serious harm, not only to individual drug users but also to their families and the larger society.”

Rights organisations expressed additional outrage following Saridewi’s execution.

The creator of the nonprofit organisation Responsible Business Initiative for Justice, Celia Ouellette, claimed that by insisting on taking extreme and irreversible action as opposed to believing in human redemption and the ability for rehabilitation.

Singapore is putting its financial future at stake in addition to its reputation abroad. It is now time to permanently abolish the death penalty.

The execution of Saridewi was referred to as a “grim milestone” by the secretary general of the French-based NGO International Federation for Human Rights, Adilur Rahman Khan, who also reinforced calls for an end to executions in Singapore.

Chiara Sangiorgio, an expert on the death penalty for Amnesty International, stated that the most recent execution “defied international safeguards on the use of the death penalty.”

“There is no proof that the death penalty deters crime in a special way or that it has any bearing on drug usage and accessibility. Singapore’s authorities are adopting neither drug policy reform nor the abolition of the death penalty, she claimed in a statement.

According to information provided to CNN by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2022, there were roughly 50 persons on death row, the bulk of them were men. There are unknown numbers of female death row inmates.

Joshua Tong, a criminal defence attorney, stated that although drug traffickers are typically men, he has met “his fair share” of female offenders.

Tong stated that there was generally “no distinction between men and women for criminal punishments” when it came to drug offences.

He continued, “The only distinction made would be on whether caning is to be imposed,” noting that Singaporean law only allows men to be caned.

The killing of Saridewi was the second execution this week in Singapore.

Mohd Aziz bin Hussain, 57, was executed on Wednesday for distributing about 50 grammes (1.7 ounces) of heroin.

A growing number of prisoners are being executed, but according to rights groups, Singapore’s drug enforcement is incredibly opaque because a complete list of prisoners on death row is not made public.

Tangaraju Suppiah, a Singaporean, was executed in May after being found guilty of attempting to traffic 2.2 pounds of cannabis. This execution drew particularly vociferous international criticism, in part because an increasing number of countries have either legalised or decriminalised the drug.

Following psychologists’ assessments that Nagaenthran K. Dharmalingam, 34, was mentally retarded, his hanging last year provoked widespread outrage.

In this case, rights activists argued that Singapore’s zero-tolerance drug policies should be reexamined because the obligatory death penalty for drug trafficking is a harsh punishment.

According to activists, the region’s illicit drug trade has not been significantly reduced by the death penalty.

According to a report released in June by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the illegal drug traffic in Asia grew to “extreme levels.” According to the research, methamphetamine prices had dropped to new lows and criminal organisations were building new trafficking routes to avoid law enforcement crackdowns.

According to the report, pre-Covid meth seizures in East and Southeast Asia resumed last year after reaching record highs during the epidemic as traffickers resorted to larger and riskier bulk shipments.

According to him, Tamale ranks as the fourth largest city in Ghana, with a population growth rate of approximately 3.5%, leading to an increase in waste production.

“Only 2% of the faecal matter generated in the Tamale Metropolis is properly treated. Currently, the remaining 98% of it is diverted sadly and helplessly into people’s farms which has a negative public health effect on the people”, he lamented.

  • What are the warning signs of prediabetes in adults?

What are the warning signs of prediabetes in adults?

Prediabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. If left untreated, prediabetes can progress to type 2 diabetes. Recognizing the warning signs of prediabetes can be essential for early intervention and preventive measures. Here are some common warning signs to look out for in adults:

    1. Increased thirst: Feeling constantly thirsty and having a frequent urge to drink water can be a sign of prediabetes.
    2. Frequent urination: People with prediabetes may find themselves urinating more often, particularly during the night.
    3. Fatigue: Feeling excessively tired or fatigued even after adequate rest can be a symptom of prediabetes.
    4. Unexplained weight loss or gain: Sudden and unexplained changes in weight, either gaining or losing, may indicate prediabetes.
    5. Blurred vision: Blurry vision or difficulty focusing may be a sign of high blood sugar levels associated with prediabetes.
    6. Increased hunger: Experiencing frequent hunger and cravings, especially after meals, can be a warning sign.
    7. Slow-healing wounds: Wounds or cuts that take a long time to heal or frequently get infected could be related to prediabetes.
    8. Tingling or numbness: A tingling sensation or numbness in the hands and feet may indicate nerve damage related to high blood sugar levels.
    9. Darkened skin patches: The appearance of darkened patches of skin, especially around the neck, armpits, or groin, can be a sign of prediabetes.

It’s important to note that not everyone with prediabetes will experience noticeable symptoms, which is why regular health check-ups, including blood sugar level tests, are crucial, especially if you have risk factors such as being overweight, having a family history of diabetes, or leading a sedentary lifestyle. If you experience any of these warning signs or have concerns about prediabetes, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and guidance on preventive measures. Lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and weight management, can help prevent or delay the progression of prediabetes to type 2 diabetes.

  • Edem Agbana condemns government for paying Service Personnel a meager GHC715 monthly

Edem Agbana condemns government for paying Service Personnel a meager GHC715 monthly

A former Deputy National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edem Agbana, has strongly criticized the government’s move to raise the allowance for National Service personnel to GHC 715.57, deeming it as ‘cruelty’ and ‘unjust’.

He argues that considering the prevailing inflation and dollar rates, the government should compensate each service person with a minimum of GHC 1,500.

“It is sheer wickedness to increase the allowance to Gh715, because the government has the capacity to pay Gh1,500 for the personnel,” he said.

The National Service Scheme, in a statement, says the government has given approval for an upward adjustment of the monthly allowance to NSS personnel from Gh559.04 to Gh715.57 with effect from January 2023.

Speaking to Nhyira FM’s Nana Jantuah on Kuro Yi Mu Nsem, Mr Agbana said the GHC159 increase is insignificant.

The parliamentary candidate for Ketu North constituency said he expected the government to increase the NSS allowance to at least Gh1,500 to make the personnel comfortable.

“Transport cost, food and other things are now expensive, and Gh715 cannot last for even two weeks for the personnel,” he added.

He explained that the NDC government increased the National Service Scheme allowance from GHC 350 to GHC 559 in 2016 at a dollar conversion value of $159, but the current GHC 715 in dollars is $62.

“The value of Gh559 is way higher than the value of Gh715 at this time, and it is an insult to the National Service Scheme personnel,” said Agbana.

  • Why walking is more effective than running

Why walking is more effective than running

Walking and running are both excellent forms of exercise that offer numerous health benefits. While running is often associated with higher intensity and calorie burn, walking can also be highly effective and has its advantages over running for certain individuals and situations. Here are some reasons why walking can be more effective than running for some people:

    1. Low impact: Walking is a low-impact exercise, which means it puts less stress on the joints compared to running. This makes it a suitable option for people with joint issues or those who are recovering from injuries.
    2. Sustainable: Walking is generally more sustainable for most people since it is less physically demanding than running. People of all ages and fitness levels can incorporate walking into their daily routine and maintain it over the long term.
    3. Lower risk of injury: Due to its low impact nature, walking has a lower risk of causing injuries like shin splints or stress fractures, which can sometimes occur with running.
    4. Long-duration exercise: Walking allows for longer exercise durations compared to running. As a result, people may be more likely to cover greater distances and spend more time being active during a walking session.
    5. Consistency: Because it is less intense, walking can be done more frequently and consistently, leading to a more regular exercise routine.
    6. Stress reduction: Walking can be a more relaxing and enjoyable activity for some individuals, helping to reduce stress levels and promote mental well-being.
    7. Accessibility: Walking requires no special equipment and can be done virtually anywhere, making it a convenient and accessible form of exercise.

While walking can be more effective than running for certain individuals, it’s essential to recognize that the effectiveness of any exercise depends on individual fitness goals, preferences, and physical capabilities. Both walking and running offer health benefits, and the best exercise is the one that suits your lifestyle and brings you joy. It’s always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional or fitness expert to determine the most suitable exercise regimen for your specific needs.

Police officer and 2 accomplices arrested for embezzling $56k and thousands of cedis

A police officer assigned to the Nima Police Station in Accra, Abednego Bortier, along with three accomplices, are facing allegations of robbing a group of Indian businessmen of 700,000 cedis and US$56,450.

In addition to the cash amount, the accused individuals are alleged to have stolen seven mobile phones and two laptops that belonged to Girish Saohwani, Manish Kuame, Bhosale Vijau Kantilal, and Lalwani Sunil Kumar.

Apart from the Police officer, the remaining accused individuals include Helena Teye, identified as a self-proclaimed blogger by investigators, Francis Omari, a tutor at IPMC, and Elizabeth Teye, who is currently evading authorities.

They are alleged to have visited the businessmen at their residence at Osu on July 19, 2023, with the officer dressed in his uniform. Investigators say they introduced themselves as a Special Investigation Team sent to conduct an investigation into illegal activities following intelligence gathering.

The businessmen were said to have been handcuffed while their home was ransacked, amid threats and intimidation.

The listed items were then stolen.

Investigators explained that the accused persons packed the robbed items in a waiting Nissan Sentra saloon car and drove away. A report was made to the Police and investigation was initiated.

The police man was tracked and arrested. During interrogation, he is said to have confessed to the crime. He led Police to his house at Dzorwulu where a sum of GH185,105.00 and US$22,500.00 were retrieved.

The officer is said to have named the other accused persons as his partners in the alleged crime.

The arrested accused persons have been remanded into police custody with the retrieved stolen items released to the businessmen.

  • KMA establishes database for enhanced regulation of commercial transport operations

KMA establishes database for enhanced regulation of commercial transport operations

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is in the process of constructing a database aimed at better managing and overseeing commercial transport activities within the city’s Central Business District.

The Urban Transport Department’s initiative for transport reorganization involves the active participation of all stakeholders within the transport sector, ensuring a successful and effective implementation.

This comes as on-street terminals, tricycle operators, cargo and other commercial transport operators repeatedly flout regulations by the KMA.

Head of the Urban Transport Department, Randy Wilson, says an enforcement team cannot be assigned to the streets to ensure drivers’ compliance to road regulations.

He was speaking to David Akuetteh on Luv In the Morning.

“We have in our by-laws that cargo vehicles are supposed to stop offloading from 9.00 am till 6.00pm. But the large cargo vehicles, you will see them offloading right during the day. We have made efforts with enforcement activities but it subsides after some time. When you stop enforcing, they start coming back,” he noted.

Randy alludes the vehicular congestion in the Central Business District is artificial, hence the restriction of commercial tricycle operations within the radius of Kumasi.

There are fears these tricycle operators will overpopulate the CBD in about five years.

“Gradually, their prominence within the CBD is becoming high. If you pass by the Kumasi Zoo area and the Kejetia Market, congestion around these areas is artificial. How many vehicles do we have in the system? But you will see that somebody’s movement or stopping and turning here and there is creating congestion in town,” he explained.

The Urban Transport Department says the reorganization plan is already being implemented for some taxis, trotro [commercial buses] and cargo vehicles.

All commercial transport shall be embossed with stickers and assigned to terminals to be operational in the CBD.

A total of five thousand vehicles were enrolled on the previous database which is still operational.

“Within the next 3 months, we are hoping that we will get every commercial vehicle that belongs to a union and belongs to a station, to be properly identified. The stickers we are rolling out include the destinations the vehicle is supposed to operate,” said Randy.

After the database rollout, all commercial transport operators will be directed to operate within their respective destinations.

“The transport operators take advantage of passengers during rush hour.  You will see a vehicle loading from Adum to Kotei. They pick you and drop you off at a short distance, they load again and repeat the same process till you get to your destination. This triples the normal transport fare a passenger is supposed to pay,” he lamented.

Divisive Israeli minister criticized for visiting significant Jerusalem holy site

Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s minister of national security, visited the Noble Sanctuary, also known as Haram al-Sharif to Muslims and the Temple Mount to Jews, on Thursday. The visit drew criticism from the Palestinian Authority and Israel’s neighbours.

Ben-Gvir said on the website that was briefly known as Twitter, “This morning I ascended to the Temple Mount, our temple that was demolished because of gratuitous hatred. Since becoming a minister at the end of last year, far-right minister Ben-Gvir has made three trips to the location where the al-Aqsa mosque is located. Many prior clashes between Israelis and Palestinians began as tension at the sacred place.

Jews observe Tisha B’Av, a day of sorrow, on Thursday to remember the tragedies that have befallen them, particularly the demolition of the two ancient temples that once stood on the Temple Mount, the holiest place in Judaism.

The Palestinian Authority and the Jordanian government, which has been in charge of Jerusalem’s sacred sites since 1924 and sees itself as the protector of the city’s Muslims and Christians’ religious freedoms, both denounced his visit. The governments of Egypt and Turkey both denounced the trip.

Ben-Gvir’s travel, according to the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, “represents a provocative and blatant breach of international law and the historical and legal status of Jerusalem and its sacred sites.” The Palestinian Authority described the visit as a step towards “imposing forcible changes on its historical and legal reality, as an integral part of the process of judaizing Jerusalem.”

Ben Gvir set the recent political unrest in Israel in the context of his visit in a statement issued by his party, Jewish Power.

We must always keep in mind that, on this day and in this location, we are all brothers, Ben-Gvir remarked. “Right, left, spiritual, nonreligious. We are one and the same. A terrorist does not distinguish between us or separate us when he peers through the glass. Unity and support for Israel are crucial.

The most crucial location for the Israeli people is here, where we must return and demonstrate our ability to rule.

Protests over the government’s proposed judicial reforms have rocked Israel for 29 weeks in a row. A bill passed this week prohibiting the court from overturning government judgements due to “unreasonability” will be challenged, the Israeli Supreme Court announced on Wednesday, and hearings will take place in September.

The contentious legislation was approved by a vote of 64-0, with all members of the governing coalition voting in favour. All opposition MPs left the room during the vote.

One of Israel’s most contentious politicians, Ben-Gvir, has been found guilty of anti-Arab racism in the past and has stated that he thinks the current situation at Israel’s holy sites has to be rectified.

Only Muslims are permitted to pray inside the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, according to the so-called Status Quo agreement that dates back to the Ottoman occupation of Jerusalem; non-Muslims are only permitted to enter during specific hours. After Israel conquered them in the 1967 war, other states and Israel came to an agreement to keep Muslim pilgrims’ access to these sacred sites open.

Jewish prayer access to the Temple Mount has been advocated by some religiously nationalist Jewish organisations. There have been multiple incidents of Jewish tourists praying in the contested region, which has angered Muslim officials and resulted in Israeli police forcibly removing them.

  • I saw what happened to Ebony in a dream – Kaywa

I saw what happened to Ebony in a dream – Kaywa

David Kojo Kyei, also known as Kaywa, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Highly Spiritual Music, has made a startling revelation about a tragic incident involving the late Ebony.

According to Kaywa, he had a premonition of the accident that ultimately claimed Ebony’s life, as it appeared to him in a vivid dream.

Upon recognizing the gravity of the dream, Kaywa wasted no time in reaching out to Bullet, Ebony’s manager, to share what he had seen. As a man of God, Kaywa explained that he had a close and personal relationship with Bullet, especially when it came to prophecies concerning his record label and artists.

Speaking on Prime Morning on Joyprime, hosted by Rosellyn Felli, Kaywa revealed that there were occasions when he had to intervene and guide them on certain actions or locations to prevent the events he had dreamed about from happening. This chilling account underscores the profound impact of dreams and prophetic visions in his life and work, particularly when it pertains to the safety and well-being of the artists under his care.

“So, what happened to Ebony was not a prophecy, I saw it in a dream. Usually, when I go to sleep, there are many things I see and so when I woke up, I texted Bullet and sent him details which included where I saw my dream. It was very detailed. Until he put out that information, nobody knew I even spoke about it. There were times I will tell them not to go at this time, I will text them and it was a personal thing”, he explained.

Kaywa further emphasized that while some prophecies may be unchangeable, he firmly believes that altering the course of events can be the best approach.

Elaborating on this perspective, he recounted a specific instance when he had a foreboding feeling about Ebony performing in the region she hailed from. Consequently, he took it upon himself to warn Ebony against holding a performance there, based on his intuition and the dream he had experienced. In his view, this proactive approach is a means of mitigating potential risks and safeguarding the well-being of the artists he works with, even when faced with challenging or unsettling premonitions.

“I have heard many people say they can see but they can’t stop it. Sometimes it is not stopping, sometimes it is just changing the course. When I saw it, I kept telling him to change the course. I remember there were times I texted them and said, the region, that space, you have a lot of calls to go and perform there, don’t go. They kept getting calls and they also were turning down the calls and all that”

“You know she is gone and I want us to respect Ebony. You know she was a very good person and all that”, he stated.
