  • Food costs to increase faster than energy costs

Food costs to increase faster than energy costs

In the next weeks, experts predict that it will be harder to put food on the table than to keep the lights on.

The cost of living issue has upended the lives of many Brits as the price of food has more than doubled amid persistent double-digit inflation.

Food inflation is alarmingly high at 15.7%, with some fresh food price tags rising 18.8% from one year to the next in April.

The tales have been eerie. People enter food banks “crying,” and single parents miss meals or consume cat food because they cannot afford to buy groceries.

Statistics released by the Resolution Foundation yesterday show how the average grocery bill will overtake the increase in the average fuel bill by next month.

‘While energy prices have risen faster, food makes up a far larger share of the typical household’s consumption (13% versus 5% in 2019-20),’ the report from the think-tank says.

The government doesn’t realise the financial toll the price hikes are taking on people, the think-tank said (Picture: PA)

‘This, combined with food prices continuing to rise even as energy bills fall back, means that by this summer the average increase in food costs since 2019-20 (£1,000) will be larger than that for energy bills (around £900).’

The price jump will hit low-income households the hardest as food costs gobble up more of people’s paychecks than energy bills.

One in five people is already eating less or skipping meals, with low-income and larger families or people on benefits being more likely to do so.

People of colour were also more likely to say the same, according to the Resolution Foundation’s analysis of a YouGov survey of 10,122 UK adults aged 18 or over, as well as say they have used a food or warm bank in the last four weeks.

In the year since April 2022, record numbers of food parcels were handed out by the Trussel Trust, which operates food pantries across the nation, with 750,000 people using the charity network’s food banks.

‘Taken together, high food and energy inflation mean low-income households are experiencing effective inflation rates more than 3ppts higher than high-income households,’ the Resolution Foundation adds.

‘We also know that poorer households buying the cheapest food are less able to change what they buy to save money. Instead, they cut down on eating.’

Six in 10 (61%) of the poorest fifth of households have cut back on essentials compared to 35% of richer households, per data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

Rent, water, mobile and broadband bills, council tax, interest rates and soon energy bills (the current price cap will end in July) have all risen in recent months.

The Resolution Foundation says that it’s not sure whether the government has quite clocked how difficult these price increases are for families.

‘Everyone realises food prices are rising,’ it says, ‘but it’s less clear that the scale of the increase has been fully understood in Westminster.

‘This summer the food price shock to family finances is on course to overtake that from energy bills.

‘The cost of living crisis isn’t ending, it’s just entering a new phase.’

Here are 10 ‘conditionalities’ in the $3 billion IMF programme Ghana got

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) unanimously approved the $3 billion bailout for Ghana at a meeting held on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, in Washington, United States of America.

$600 million out of the $3 billion loan was disbursed on the day of the approval of the bailout and $350 million would be disbursed every six months for the three-year programme.

Two days after the approval of the IMF programme, the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government is being criticised for the deal it got for the $3 billion bailout.

The Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, and other parties who negotiated on behalf of the government of Ghana for the bailout have been described as wicked because of the agreement they settled on.

Experts including University of Ghana don, Prof Godfred Bokpin, have stated that the deal will worsen the hardships ordinary Ghanaians are currently going through.

Here are some of the conditions supposedly enshrined in the $3 billion bailout agreement:

    1. Removal of Value Added Tax (Vat) exemptions.

    2. Reformation of the Corporate Income Tax (CIT) by phasing out tax holidays and exemptions.

    3. Reducing Customs exemptions.

    4. Increasing progressivity in personal income taxes – income taxes will be going up.

    5. Automatically adjusting fuel levies by exchange rate movement and inflation.

    6. Quarterly tariff adjustment including electricity and water tariffs.

    7. Government can employ only 0.5 per cent of the current labour force.

    8. A limit to the rate at which the government can increase the salaries of public sector workers.

    9. A tax-to-GDP ratio of 18 per cent before the end of the three IMF programme.

    10. A second debt restructuring exercise – Domestic Debt Exchange Programme “Part II”.

Viral Rasta couple allegedly sacrificed their children to expand their church – Oboy Siki

Kumawood actor Oboy Siki has alleged that the Rastafarian couple, who have gained online attention with their dance video and unconventional appearance, are tormented by the tragic loss of their children.

Recently, netizens have witnessed a couple who made waves with their lovey-dovey video on social media.

In the said video, the couple was spotted in thick unhealthy dread locs and clad in an underwear while smoking, dancing and caressing each other.

The video has since raised brows online, with scores of netizens reacting to their bizarre and ‘malnourished’ physique on social media.

Some individuals have also insisted that the couple, perhaps, might be battling a mental disorder.

But reacting to this, Oboy Siki has alleged the couple who once owned a church, sacrificed their children to establish it, and are now dealing with the consequences.

Shooting down claims that they are battling mental issues as a result of drug abuse, he said,

“They went in for something. They two of them did a pact, they exchanged something and they are aware. They are being haunted. They went in for some powers to build their church and it ended up taking away their two children. Now they are being haunted, they are suffering the consequences.”

Meanwhile, netizens are calling on the appropriate authorities to intervene in their situation, which they believe could escalate without attention.

18.36% proposed electricity tariff ‘shocks’ Consumer Protection Agency

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) have expressed shock over the proposed 18.36% increase in electricity tariffs in Ghana.

According to CPA, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) failed to engage them on the intended tariff adjustment, describing the move as one-sided decision which cannot be accepted.

Speaking on the Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s morning show Nyansapo on Thursday, May 18, 2023, the Executive Director for CPA, Nana Prempeh Okgyeabuo Aduhene said they are opposed to the increment and thus want further engagements between PURC and the public on the matter.

The PURC has announced an increment in tariffs for electricity and natural gas by 18.36%.

According to the Commission, the move is to avert power outages, otherwise known as dumsor which could harm individuals and businesses.

In a press release sighted by OTEC News, it stated that the review was to maintain the real value of the cost of supply of utility services.

PURC also blamed the depreciation of the local currency – Cedi against the US Dollar, high inflation, electricity generation mix, and the weighted average cost of natural gas (WACOG) as the factors that influenced the latest increment.

The Executive Director of CPA however said it was wrong for PURC to single handedly increase tariffs without the input of consumers.

“I was shocked when i learned about the increase, because we at the CPA, normally engages PURC on sensitive issues such as this before it is finally decided,” he said.

“As representatives for the public, we believe the PURC ought to have taking the input of stakeholders before coming out with the final percentage”.

“We will write to the president over this blatant this deliberate attempt by the PURC to sideline CPA on important issues and find lasting solutions to the problem.”

Airstrikes ‘shook’ homes as sixth week of Sudanese civil war began

Last night, airstrikes hit Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, as the civil conflict, which has trapped and displaced millions of people, enters its sixth week.

Law and order have collapsed as a result of fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, and both sides have been accused of looting.

In the country of North Africa, supplies of food, money, and necessities are rapidly running out.

Eyewitnesses in southern Omdurman and northern Bahri, the two cities that are located across the Nile from Khartoum and make up Sudan’s “triple capital,” have reported airstrikes on Saturday.

epa10631656 People fleeing Sudan arrive at the Qastal Land Port after crossing the border from Sudan, near Abu Simbel, southern Egypt, 16 May 2023. Some of the strikes took place near the state broadcaster in Omdurman, the eyewitnesses said.

Eyewitnesses in Khartoum said that the situation was relatively calm, although sporadic gunshots could be heard.

The conflict, which began on April 15, has displaced almost 1.1 million people internally and into neighbouring countries.

Some 705 people have been killed and at least 5,287 injured, according to the World Health Organization.

Talks sponsored by the United States and Saudi Arabia in Jeddah have not been fruitful, and the two sides have accused each other of violating multiple ceasefire agreements.

‘We faced heavy artillery fire early this morning, the whole house was shaking,’ said Sanaa Hassan, a 33-year-old living in the al-Salha neighbourhood of Omdurman.

‘It was terrifying, everyone was lying under their beds. What’s happening is a nightmare,’ she said.

The RSF is embedded in residential districts, drawing almost continual air strikes by the regular armed forces.

In recent days ground fighting has flared once again in the Darfur region, in the cities of Nyala and Zalenjei.

Both sides blamed each other in statements late on Friday for sparking the fighting in Nyala, one of the country’s largest cities, which had for weeks been relatively calm due to a locally-brokered truce.

A local activist told reporters there were sporadic gun clashes near the city’s main market close to army headquarters on Saturday morning. Almost 30 people have died in the two previous days of fighting, according to activists.

The war broke out in Khartoum after disputes over plans for the RSF to be integrated into the army and over the future chain of command under an internationally backed deal to shift Sudan towards democracy following decades of conflict-ridden autocracy.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced late on Friday more than $100 million to Sudan and countries receiving fleeing Sudanese, including much-needed food and medical aid.

‘It’s hard to convey the extent of the suffering occurring right now in Sudan,’ said agency head Samantha Power.

  • You can’t rule Ghana with 60 ministers – Lawyer tells Mahama

You can’t rule Ghana with 60 ministers – Lawyer tells Mahama

Private legal practitioner, Kwame Adofo, has cast doubt over claims by former president and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, that he will be running an administration with just 60 ministers is not realistic.

His comments come on the back of claims by the flagbearer, John Mahama during his acceptance speech after a landslide win in the presidential and parliamentary primaries of the NDC.

He was speaking on Kumasi-based Hello FM.

According to Lawyer Adofo, running an administration with less than 80 ministers will be challenging for the former president. But then again, the claim didn’t come as a manifesto promise but rather an acceptance speech.

“Currently there are 86 ministers, 27 of them are cabinet ministers, 16 are regional ministers and 17 are other ministers, a sum of it all makes up to 86. So, now if you look closely at the claim by the former president, Mahama, that he was going to run an administration with just 60 ministers. Out of the 60, when you subtract 16 which is automatic, 27 cabinet ministers which also remains automatic, when you do the subtraction, you will be left with just a few ministers. It will be interesting to see what will happen because if you look at the composition, once you come under 80, you will have problems. It will be left with just 17 ministers, all other ministries have not been included yet,” he said.

The lawyer further stated that former President Mahama may come up with a more feasible figure in his manifesto after careful recalculation of the number of ministers they will need to run their administration if they should win.

“So, it is true about what he said but let’s wait on his manifesto. When we see it in the manifesto, then we can be serious about discussing it. At this stage, there is no manifesto, he only gave an acceptance speech. Maybe after their calculations, they will come up with realistic numbers because as we speak even the 60 is not realistic. So, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt that the campaign has now begun,” he added.

    Background:

Mr Mahama delivering an acceptance speech following his victory in the NDC’s Primaries at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Monday, May 15, 2023, pledged his commitment to run a government with fewer officials and appointees as compared to the current Akufo-Addo-led administration.

“I am committed to operating an effective government with not more than sixty (60) ministers. These Ministers together with other appointees of the government will not be entitled to ex-gratia payments after their tenure, as they will commit to that undertaking even before the necessary constitutional amendments, including a review of the controversial Article 71,” Mr Mahama stated.

Rishi and Zelensky emotionally hug themselves as they meet ahead of G7 talks in Japan

At the G7 conference in Hiroshima, Rishi Sunak and Volodymyr Zelensky hugged.

You made it, the Prime Minister told the leader.

The Ukrainian president grinned, nodded, and responded, “Thank you,” when asked if it was a good day.

Prior to crucial negotiations at the G7 summit, Mr. Zelensky arrived in Japan early this morning.

Japan says his decision to visit Hiroshima stems from his ‘strong wish’ to participate in talks that will influence his nation’s defense against Russia.

Live footage had showed the leader disembark from a French government aircraft around 7.30am British time.

Mr Zelensky will attend the G7 summit in person on Sunday and hold a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during his stay.

This morning, he tweeted: ‘Japan. G7. Important meetings with partners and friends of Ukraine. Security and enhanced cooperation for our victory. Peace will become closer today.’

Mr Sunak later shared an image of the pair hugging, and added: ‘Ukraine, we’re not going anywhere.’

Mr Zelensky will take part in a session regarding peace and security alongside the G7 leaders and invited outreach countries, according to the Japanese foreign ministry.

His visit to Japan marks the first since October 2019 and the first since the invasion by Russia.

An EU official, speaking on condition of anonymity to brief reporters on the deliberations, said Mr Zelensky will take part in two separate sessions Sunday.

The first session will be with G7 members only and will focus on the war in Ukraine.

The second session will include the G7 as well as the other nations invited to take part in the summit, and will focus on ‘peace and stability.’

U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan said that President Joe Biden and Mr Zelensky would have direct engagement at the summit.

The news comes after the US pledged support for training Ukrainian pilots on U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets, a precursor to eventually providing those aircraft to Ukraine’s Air Force.

World leaders have faced a balancing act at the G7 in Hiroshima as they look to address a raft of global worries demanding urgent attention, including climate change, AI, poverty and economic instability, nuclear proliferation and, above all, the war in Ukraine.

China, the world’s No. 2 economy, sits at the nexus of many of those concerns.

The G7 leaders are also to discuss efforts to strengthen the global economy and address rising prices that are squeezing families and government budgets around the world, particularly in developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The G7 includes Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada and Italy, as well as the European Union.

“I  have met the Regional and District Police Commander, and they have assured us that security will be beefed up. Every polling station will have officers, and apart from that there will be mobile security forces on standby – they are taking intelligence.”

Mr Banabio added that “whenever it is suspected that these places are hotspots, they will provide security for such places. so I can assure you as I have been assured by the commanders that security is well strategised.”

Singer and songwriter Noella Wiyaala says the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) have become exclusively for Accra-based artists.

She said the awards, which is supposed to recognise the efforts of musical talents nationwide, had become Accra-based and honours artiste in the nation’s capital.

Wiyaala in an interview disclosed that the popular music award scheme’s outline of criteria for the selection of nominees, had led her not to participate in the awards thus her inability to submit entries.

The singer and songwriter was named Most Promising Artiste in Africa, Revelation of the African Continent, and winner of the 2014 All African Music Awards (AFRIMAs).

The award criterion, Wiyaala noted, required that one’s songs be aired on every radio station in the capital, which is not possible for her due to her linguistic preference.

Wiyaala collaborates on campaigns against child marriage, child poverty, health, and sanitation with UNICEF Ghana and the Ghanaian Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.

  • Man requests part payment after lightning struck an EasyJet flight

Man requests part payment after lightning struck an EasyJet flight

An angry passenger is now looking for compensation after his easyJet flight from Poland to the United Kingdom had to be cancelled due to lightning damage.

On April 14, the Digances were supposed to fly back to Edinburgh, Scotland from Krakow in time for their granddaughter’s birthday party two days later.

Due to the damage the aircraft had incurred and the requirement for repairs, the airline was obliged to cancel the flight.

The 75-year-old claims that when he first appeared at the airport counter, service personnel told him there wouldn’t be another flight for three more days.

That night, Mr Digance and his 74-year-old partner were put up in a hotel opposite the airport by easyJet but he says they received no further contact about an earlier alternative flight home.

With no time to waste, the couple were forced into booking new flights off their own backs, but it cost them a whopping £1,318 and meant travelling via Frankfurt, Germany to arrive in Edinburgh on the afternoon of April 15.

Mr Digance said his phone ran out of battery shortly after arriving at the hotel near the airport in Krakow but when he switched it on the next morning, the only correspondence he’d received from easyJet was at 5am.

The airline had emailed to say they’d booked the pair on a flight to Belfast and then a connecting journey to Edinburgh, which would get in late at night on April 15.

According to easyJet, Mr Digance was kept ‘regularly updated’ that evening about alternative travel arrangements – something which he disputes.

He says their original flight had already been delayed by two hours before it was cancelled and believes they were left with no choice but to re-book flights themselves, given the time constraints they were under.

He told EdinburghLive: ‘The young woman sitting behind the EasyJet desk said the next flight was Monday April 17 and just laughed – we didn’t know what to do as we felt as though we had just been abandoned.

‘The battery on my phone had almost run out and we are both in our mid 70s and struggle with technology but thankfully a lovely Polish woman Edy who was flying to Edinburgh helped us.

‘EasyJet put us and a number of other passengers up for the night at the Garden Hilton but this was not without difficulty as the staff at the hotel had to contact easyJet for the vouchers.

‘We had to get back for our granddaughter’s birthday party on the 16th so Edy booked us flights from Krakow to Frankfurt and then to Edinburgh from her tablet.’

Mr Digance said he was ‘fully expecting’ compensation from easyJet the next morning but their request has since been declined by the company due to the ‘exceptional circumstances’ of the lightning strike.

The situation has left Mr Digance fuming at easyJet for refusing to reimburse his flight fee and he says he will be taking the matter further.

He added: ‘I am prepared to take them all the way until I get what I am owed. It was not good enough for them to email us at 5am to say they had found alternative travel.’

An easyJet holidays spokesperson said: ‘We’re sorry to hear that Mr and Ms Digance’s flight home was cancelled due to their aircraft being struck by lightning earlier that day.

‘In situations like these, it’s our priority to get our customers booked onto an alternative flight as soon as possible and source hotel accommodation if needed.

‘In this instance we contacted our customers to let them know that we were sourcing them an alternative flight home, and also to provide details of their overnight accommodation.

‘We remained in regular contact that evening, letting them know we’d sourced them a flight to Belfast, and at 5am the following morning we confirmed that the customers were booked onto flights back to Edinburgh via Belfast that day.

‘However, we understand Mr and Ms Digance chose to book themselves an alternative flight home instead.

‘Whilst circumstances like these are out of our control, we’d like to apologise for the inconvenience Mr and Ms Digance experienced.’

A musician charged with fraud has been released on bail

An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to a musician who allegedly deceived a couple, taking GH₵20,000.00 from them with the promise of obtaining a plot of land but ultimately failed to deliver.

Mr. Isaac Adjetey Adjei, who was charged with defrauding by false pretense, pleaded not guilty.

The Court presided by Mrs Angelina Attachie admitted the accused person to bail in the sum of GH₵20,000.00 with two sureties.

The case has been adjourned to June 12, 2023.

The facts as presented by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong were that the complainants were Evelyn Adiki Addy and her husband Adolf Muckenhaupt, who are German nationals, resided at Adenta, while the accused person was a resident of Lakeside, Accra.

The prosecution said in January 2022, the complainants (the couple) visited Marina Park for entertainment and spotted a piece of land around the park and developed an interest in buying it.

It said the couple communicated their interest in buying the said land to the Sheriff, a worker at the park who also led the couple to the accused person.

The prosecution said the accused person presented himself as the owner of the land and told the couple that he (the accused person) had been on an attached plot of land where he and his entire family lived and that he was ready to sell the part that the couple was interested in.

It said the couple and the accused person bargained the price of the land and settled on GH₵120,000.00.

The prosecution said the accused person produced a site plan he claimed to cover the said land and requested that the couple made a deposit to enable him to prepare the land documents for them.

It said the couple obliged and gave the accused person the sum of GH₵20,000.00.

The prosecution said the couple took the site plan for a search and had suspected foul play and reported the matter to the Police, who arrested the accused person and during investigations, he admitted taking the GH₵20,000.00 from the couple.

It said the accused person stated that he used part of the money to prepare the site plan, bought stones and sand to renovate where he was living with his family, and spent the rest.

The prosecution said the Police extended investigations to the Lands Commission and it came to light that the whole site belonged to the Agricultural Cattle Lakeside Estate Limited following a judgment dated May 6, 2020.

  • Govt pledges to spend within limits to meet IMF’s deficit requirement

Govt pledges to spend within limits to meet IMF’s deficit requirement

The government will spend within limits to ensure it does not affront the deficit conditionality of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has said.

Ghana is to receive the first tranche of $600 million from the Fund with the remainder of the total $3 billion bailout to be spread within the next few years.

Dr Adam said the government has put measures in place to ensure fiscal discipline.

“The minister has already set up a budget implementation standing committee which I chair, and that is supposed to ensure that whatever we spend on is approved, and whatever we spend on goes through a very rigorous process of approval so that we can keep our spending within our budget”, he told Joy News.

He said: “If we will have any spending beyond the budget that will increase our deficit levels then we may not be able to meet the IMF requirement of deficit”.

“We’re supposed to record about 1.5% of primary balance and to be able to do that will require very significant fiscal discipline”, Dr Amin Adam pointed out.

He said the IMF’s condition that Ghana undergoes a front-loaded fiscal adjustment of about 5.1 percentage points, is “huge”, and “demands discipline; it demands hard work”.

“And, so, we are sensitising every sector of government including SOEs, and this is the reason why they all now are brought under the GIFMIS including the statutory funds; they’re all brought through the GIFMIS in order to give us visibility and also to ensure that we control the spending by every agent of government”.

Meanwhile, IMF MD Kristalina Georgieva has said “preserving financial sector stability is critical for the success” of Ghana’s comprehensive ECF-supported economic reform programme aimed restoring macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability.

The executive board of the IMF approved Ghana’s US$3 billion bailout request to support the country’s economic recovery on Wednesday, 17 May 2023.

In a statement, the IMF boss said: “Given the adverse impact of the domestic debt restructuring on balance sheets of financial institutions, the authorities will devise and implement a comprehensive strategy to rapidly rebuild financial institutions’ buffers and exit from temporary regulatory forbearance measures”.

She noted: “Monetary and exchange rate policies under the programme will focus on reining in inflation and rebuilding foreign reserve buffers. The Bank of Ghana will continue tightening monetary policy until inflation is on a firmly declining path and will eliminate monetary financing of the budget. The central bank will also enhance exchange rate flexibility and limit foreign exchange interventions to rebuild external buffers”.

“An ambitious structural reform agenda is being put in place to reinvigorate private sector-led growth by improving the business environment, governance, and productivity”.

Also, she said: “The combination of large external shocks and pre-existing fiscal and debt vulnerabilities precipitated a deep economic and financial crisis in Ghana”.

“In response, the authorities have launched a comprehensive reform programme to be supported by the ECF-arrangement”.

“It is focused on restoring macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability as well as implementing wide-ranging reforms to build resilience and lay the foundation for stronger and more inclusive growth”.

“Capacity development and continued support by development partners would be critical for the successful implementation of the authorities’ programme”.

She added: “Fiscal consolidation is a core element of the programme”, noting: “A substantial and front-loaded fiscal adjustment has started with the 2023 budget”.

Also, the IMF MD said: “Enhanced revenue and streamlined expenditure will be combined with policies to protect vulnerable households and create room for higher social and development spending in the medium term”.

“With a view to fostering lasting fiscal discipline, the authorities are also advancing reforms to enhance domestic revenue mobilisation, strengthen public financial management, and tackle the deep challenges in the energy and cocoa sectors”.

“The government has also launched a comprehensive debt restructuring, including both domestic and external debt, to place debt on a sustainable path. Effective collaboration by all parties involved would be critical”, she pointed out.

Prof Ama Browne contests claims Joseph Yamin campaigned for her

A defeated parliamentary aspirant of the National Democratic Congress in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese constituency, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse has rubbished some claims made by the parliamentary candidate Felix Ofosu Kwakye against her in relation to the recent primaries.

Felix Ofosu Kwakye who won the constituency’s NDC parliamentary primaries is reported to have made assertions that the National Organiser of the party Joseph Yamin campaigned against him in favour of Professor Ama Browne.

According to him, Mr Yamin stormed the constituency a few days before the elections and staged a spirited campaign, coupled with machinations to cause him to lose the primaries. A situation he noted could have derailed his sacrifices, commitment and dedication to the party over the years.

But reacting to the claims, Professor Nana Ama Browne dismissed the assertions, arguing that such allegations are unfounded and born out of frustration on the part of the newly elected parliamentary candidate.

“Joseph Yammin never came to the constituency to campaign for me or anybody that I know. The only time Yammin came to the constituency is the 2020 elections to campaign for Felix himself when he was a candidate in the 2020 general election that was the only time he came to the constituency to campaign. In this primary which ended on the 13th of May, he never came to the constituency to campaign for me”

“These accusations are all false, they are not true, they are just simply accusations. If there were any machinations, there machination that worked for Felix and I saw it myself, so if he is talking about national, region, party machinations people came to the constituency to work for him to win the elections,” she said.

Professor Browne further intimated that the outburst of Mr Ofosu Kwakye is needless as it has the potential to disturb the peace of the party in the constituency.

“Along the campaigning Felix was frustrated, you can see frustration all over him and even when he won, he is still frustrated, leadership must come in, why is he taking internal matters out there, you have won, what is it again? He must now concentrate and win the seat, NDC must win the seat, he should waste his time going round the media complaining about the party,” she added.

The former Deputy Minister for Communication was re-elected parliamentary candidate for the Asebu-Kwamankese constituency.

This is the second time in a row he has been elected to lead the NDC as its parliamentary candidate in the same constituency.

The former Deputy Minister polled 830 while Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse garnered 571 votes.

  • 3 year old girl killed after a Hermes driver ran over her

3 year old girl killed after a Hermes driver ran over her

An inquest heard that a Hermes delivery driver ran over a three-year-old child while reversing and did not see her because she was in his blind zone.

On March 3, 2021, Milliee-Ann Rae McKellar was playing outside her grandmother’s home in Calne, Wiltshire when she was struck by a Mercedes Sprinter van and killed.

In order to deliver packages, the driver stopped in the cul-de-sac with two wheels on the pavement. After checking his mirrors and the rear camera, he started backing up.

But Milliee wasn’t visible and ended up going under the front and rear nearside wheels, suffering catastrophic injuries from which she died soon after.

Swindon Coroner’s Court heard the three-year-old sustained a significant base skull fracture with compounds on the left and right sides.

She also suffered with brain swelling, subarachnoid and subdural haemorrhage and multiple pelvic fractures.

Milliee’s mum Tanzin Wells said her daughter would play out on the street with other children and would stop and look when crossing a road.

The mum said she was keeping an eye on her daughter through gaps in the picket fence while round at a neighbour’s house.

She told police Milliee was standing on the pavement the moment she was hit.

But police sergeant Jonathan Brooks, an officer assigned to the forensic collision investigation unit, said in his opinion she would have been standing in the carriageway at the time of impact.

PS Brooks said he ‘applied consideration’ but said the mum’s view ‘would have made it difficult, in my opinion, to place her with any accuracy’.

He confirmed Milliee would have been in the driver’s blind spot – and would not have been seen on checking his mirrors and the van’s rear view camera.

PS Brooks said the child’s stature and weight of 16 kilos in comparison to the size and power of the van, meant it was ‘unlikely he was able to appreciate what was occurring’.

He added: ‘It is my view that he wouldn’t have realised what was occurring until Milliee and the scooter [that she was holding] came into view.’

Moments before the incident Steven Hargreaves a neighbour had arrived.

He said Milliee tried to move away when the van started but ‘didn’t stand a chance’.

Coroner Ian Singleton recorded Milliee’s cause of death as a road traffic accident.

He thanked her family for attending the inquest and passed on his condolences to them.

Wiltshire Police previously confirmed in a statement the driver would not be prosecuted over the incident.

A spokesperson confirmed: ‘An investigation into the circumstances of a collision in Calne in which a three-year-old girl sadly died has now concluded.

‘A thorough investigation led by specialist officers has been conducted and a file was sent to the Crown Prosecution Service who concluded that no further action will be taken against the driver of the van involved.

‘The parents of the young girl have been informed and our thoughts remain with them at this time.’

Annoh-Dompreh: “Dr. Your feeble jabs can not tickle us, not in the least. We remain focused on the ball. DMB. we are possessed, JM’s nightmare & Ghana’s darling boy!.”

Apaak: “Hon. Dompre, Dr. Bawumia is NOT a flagbearer yet, so what you describe as my feeble jabs are only teasers. The main show will commence if your Galamsey party makes the Lying One your flagbearer. Good news is that I won’t sweat listing pages of his lies, Google will assist me!”

1st tranche of IMF support lands into BoG account

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has announced that the first tranche of the $3 billion International Monetary Fund Extended Credit Facility (ECF) has been credited to the Bank of Ghana’s account.

The $600 million inflow, according to the Minister, arrived late afternoon of Friday, May 19, 2023.

Joy Business had earlier reported that the IMF Board will approve the “cash disbursement” as soon as it considers a request for Ghana’s Programme on Wednesday May 17, 2023.

A tweet from the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta stated that “the Bank of Ghana informs me that the first tranche of $600 million of Ghana’s low interest $3 billion ECF facility has been received. These funds will be used for BOP [Balance of Payment] and budget support and will also help stabilise the FX rate and trigger a cascading effect on inflation”.

$600m IMF cash credited to BoG account

Another tranche of funds is also expected to be disbursed by June 2023.

This will be followed by a visit by an IMF Mission to Ghana in June 2023 to review Ghana’s programme considerations.

Another review is expected just before the end of 2023, possibly in December 2023, before the final disbursement.

All the funds will be paid directly into the Bank of Ghana’s account to support Ghana’s balance of payments needs.

Ghana is expected to get about $3 billion spread over a period of three years under the IMF programme.

Ghana secured the required financing assurance from Ghana’s Creditors Committee under the G20 Common Framework last week, which includes China.

This came after the Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, indicated that Ghana will secure the financing assurance under the G20 Common Framework

She noted that the decision would help Ghana to unlock the much-needed financing from Ghana’s development partners.

“I also strongly endorse the call by the Official Creditor Committee for private creditors and other official bilateral creditors to commit to comparable debt treatments,” the IMF boss added.

In comments made at the launch, local media captured Akufo-Addo as saying: “As leaders, we all have our high and low moments, but I have no doubt that posterity will be kind to Muhammadu Buhari,” Akufo-Addo said.

President Buhari, we will miss you. West Africa, Africa, and indeed, the world will miss your leadership. The leadership of a military ruler turned consummate democrat who was extremely solicitous of Nigeria’s and Africa’s interests and who sought principles in all decisions which he took.

    Side-chic Seyram ‘fights’ police arrest

Deborah Seyram Adablah, a former National Service Personnel (NSS), who gained attention due to a widely shared sexual harassment lawsuit against a prominent banker, was recently recorded expressing her discontent with the police and a court bailiff regarding her arrest

In a video ostensibly shared on her social media handle capturing her exchanges with the police Deborah is heard repeatedly demanding why the police are bent on arresting her.

“No problem, I want to know the basis of the arrest, what is the arrest for?” just as the police officer in charge tries to explain why the order, she butts in with a ‘legal view’ that when courts give orders, it takes days to take effect, which the officer said he was unaware of.

“You are preventing court orders, you are preventing a court official not to execute court orders,” the police eventually explains. Deborah retorts: “That means I am under arrest, so I am obstructing what?”

    “Court orders,” the police replies.

She goes on to ask where she is being sent having been put into a police pickup, when she is told, to the regional headquarters, she insists she is in Labadi and there is a police station that must cater for that so why the regional station.

After a back and forth, she reverts to her demand for the purpose of arrest and is now pointed to the bailiff, who apparently was sent to execute an order of retrieving a vehicle that Deborah’s sponsor had bought for her during their relationship, which ended on a sour note triggering her law suit.

    What the court ordered

The High Court in Accra ordered the Registrar of the Court, Law Court Complex, to take custody of the vehicle at the centre of dispute in the case in which Deborah sued Ernest Nimako for sexual harassment.

In her suit is, she claimed among other things that the vehicle with registration No. GC 7899- 21, bought for her by Mr. Nimako, the first defendant in the case.

In court on Tuesday, May 16, the Court (General Jurisdiction) presided over by Justice Olivia Obeng Owusu while ruling on an application filed by Mr. Nimako said the vehicle in dispute should be surrendered to the Registrar of the High Court for preservation until the final determination of the case.

To this end, the court also ordered Mr Nimako, the Defendant (applicant) to submit all documents in relation to the said vehicle to the Registrar.

She claims Mr Nimako registered the said vehicle he bought for her in his name and that contrary to their agreement, took back the GH¢120,000 Honda Civic.

AN EIB Network’s Legal Affairs Correspondent, said vehicle was driven to court by the Plaintiff on the day of the hearing but it is not known how or why she was allowed to drive it home without it being ‘impounded’ by the Registrar per the orders of the court.

  • Ghana gained $1.2 bn from small-scale mining in 2022 – Lands Minister

Ghana gained $1.2 bn from small-scale mining in 2022 – Lands Minister

Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources has disclosed that the country made a whooping US $1.2 billion from illegal mining last year.

He said small-scale mining has been contributing increasingly to the nation’s gold output as the sector produced a total of 712,405 ounces of gold last year.

He said it brought to the nation almost US$1,200,000,000 in export receipts, adding that all diamonds produced in the country in 2022, which amounted to 82,251.99 carats and generated US$3,900,000 in revenue were from small-scale mining.

Mr Jinapor made the statement when he was speaking at the opening of a two-day transformational dialogue on artisanal and small-scale mining under the theme, “Sustaining Environmental Security and Human Rights in Small Scale Mining Operations in Ghana” at Fiapre in the Sunyani West Municipality.

The programme, initiated by the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) aimed at bringing together various stakeholders to deliberate on the issue and jointly make efforts towards a common direction.

It was attended by politicians, traditional leaders, students, members, and staff of the UENR, artisans and small-scale miners, civil society actors, representatives of large-scale mining companies and the media.

Mr Jinapor said the small-scale mining sector had been the source of employment for thousands of people and supported the lives and livelihoods of millions of citizens.

But he added the increasing illegalities associated with the sector and resulting in the destruction of the environment remained a national challenge that required collaborative effort to end the menace.

Mr Jinapor said the government’s effort to clamp down on galamsey had been met with resistance because of the greedy and unscrupulous nation-wreckers destroying the environment for their personal interests.

He said the government in addressing the threat of illegal mining had introduced policies and measures under the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP) to provide alternative sources of income and livelihood to persons engaged in the menace.

In that regard several young men and women had been employed in the production of seedlings and reclamation of degraded mined lands in the Ashanti, Eastern and Western North Regions, the Minister added.

He said the Apprenticeship, Skills Training and Entrepreneurship module of the Programme was expected to be rolled out later this year to provide training for 5,000 youth in agriculture, technical, vocational, industrial, and mining skills.

Mr Jinapor , therefore, commended the UENR for introducing several novel programmes, including bachelor and graduate programmes in Sustainable Mining, Land Degradation Neutrality and Sustainable Land Management aimed at promoting sustainable mining and environmental protection.

The effort needed a hands-on-deck approach to promoting sustainable resources extraction practices and transforming mined lands into viable lands for agricultural purposes, he said and called for intensification of education on responsible and sustainable mining practices.

  • Surgeon fired for allowing cleaner hold patient’s leg during toe amputation

Surgeon fired for allowing cleaner hold patient’s leg during toe amputation

A surgeon in Germany was fired after requesting a cleaner to support the leg of a patient as he severed their toe.

In 2020, the procedure was carried out by a doctor who practised at a university hospital in Mainz, Frankfurt Rhine-Main.

He was later sacked by the hospital, the University Medical Centre Mainz of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, according to the regional newspaper Mainzer Allgemeine Zeitung.

The hospital’s chief executive, Norbert Pfeiffer, said the patient was set to have a routine toe amputation with two surgeons scheduled for it.

When both were called to the emergency room, a third doctor stepped in despite there being no qualified assistants on hand to help.

Wrongly going ahead with the operation anyway, the partially anaesthetised patient became restless.

So the surgeon called over a cleaner and asked her to hold the patient’s leg down.

She was also asked to hand him surgical instruments, Südwestrundfunk (SWR), a southwest Germany broadcaster, reported.

‘The patient was not harmed,’ the university told Allgemeine, adding that they suffered no complications.

According to an internal letter seen by the newspaper, the incident became known to university officials in October 2020 when the operating room manager spotted the cleaner holding bloody gauze pads in the operating theatre.

The manager said the cleaner was not medically trained and that surgical tools were not accounted for after the surgery.

She said: ‘After the operation, the room was simply left behind with bloody tables and we organised the cleaning up later.’

‘What happened to the operated limb and whether it was disposed of correctly is also beyond my knowledge,’ the manager added.

The doctor was given a warning before being fired in 2021, the outlets reported.

State health officials said the incident was ‘very regrettable and ‘should not be repeated’.

The procedure, a spokesperson for the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Health told Allgemeine, was a ‘clear violation of existing regulations’.

‘This never should have happened,’ the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur GmbH (dpa) quoted Pfeiffer as saying.

Zelensky arrives in Japan prior to G7 summit discussions

Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Japan in advance of crucial G7 summit negotiations.

Early this morning, the aircraft carrying the president of Ukraine landed at Hiroshima Airport.

According to Japan, Mr. Zelensky’s decision to travel to Hiroshima resulted from his “strong desire” to take part in discussions that may affect his country’s defence against Russia.

The boss may be seen getting out of a French government plane in live video.

Live footage showed the leader disembark from a French government aircraft.

The Ukrainian leader will take part in a session regarding peace and security alongside the G7 leaders and invited outreach countries, according to the Japanese foreign ministry.

In an interview on UrbanBlend with Blakk Rasta, Kinaata emphasized the profound impact Samini had on his journey to stardom.

Although Kinaata voiced his displeasure with the term ‘discovery’, he acknowledged the invaluable assistance Samini provided throughout his career.

He stated, “I don’t understand the discovery term, but Samini has been instrumental in my career.”

Kinaata recognized that he was relatively unknown when he was signed onto the High-Grade family, owned by Samini, but because of Samini’s fame, he gained exposure and instantly inherited a fan base.

“I got signed onto the High-Grade family when no one knew me. It was Samini that they knew, so me tagging along with Samini, his fans automatically became my fans. What Samini did for me was give me a lot of exposure,” he said.

Samini went above and beyond, securing performance opportunities for Kinaata, even at shows where he wasn’t initially scheduled to perform.

Kinaata recalled an unforgettable moment, stating, “When Chris Brown came to Ghana, I was now in Accra, and Samini brought me to the stage to perform for 4 or 5 minutes. Shows I wasn’t billed to perform, even though he got me to perform. Samini gave me a lot of exposure.”

While Kofi Kinaata has been actively involved in rap and music since 2008, he emphasized that Samini’s guidance and support were instrumental in propelling his career forward.

Oldest most complete Hebrew Bible sells for $38m at auction

The oldest most complete Hebrew Bible has been bought at Sotheby’s New York for $38.1m (£30.6m), becoming the most valuable manuscript sold at auction.

The Codex Sassoon is thought to have been written about 1,100 years ago.

It is the earliest surviving example of a single manuscript containing all 24 books of the Hebrew Bible with punctuation, vowels and accents.

US lawyer and former ambassador Alfred Moses bought it for the ANU Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv, Israel.

“The Hebrew Bible is the most influential in history and constitutes the bedrock of Western civilisation,” Mr Moses said in a statement.

“I rejoice in knowing that it belongs to the Jewish people. It was my mission, realising the historic significance of Codex Sassoon, to see it resides in a place with global access to all people.”

Oldest most complete Hebrew Bible sells for $38m at auction
It is the oldest single manuscript containing all books of the Hebrew Bible with their punctuation, vowels, and accents

The winning bid exceeded the $30.8m paid by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in 1994 for the Codex Leicester, Leonardo da Vinci’s scientific notebook.

But it fell short of the record for a historical document sold at auction set by hedge fund manager Ken Griffin, who bought a first-edition printed copy of the US Constitution for $43.2m two years ago.

The Codex Sassoon is named after a previous owner, David Solomon Sassoon, who acquired it in 1929 and assembled the largest and most important private collection of Hebrew manuscripts in the world at his home in London.

The text of the Hebrew Bible – whose 24 books make up what Christians call the Old Testament – remained in flux until the early Middle Ages, when Jewish scholars known as Masoretes began to create a body of notes that standardised it.

The Aleppo Codex, which was assembled around 930, is considered the most authoritative Masoretic text. However, damage from a fire in the Syrian city of Aleppo in 1947 means that only 295 of the original 487 pages survive today.

The Codex Sassoon, which carbon dating shows was created around 900, is missing only 12 pages, according to Sotheby’s.

“It presents to us the first time an almost-complete book of the Hebrew Bible appears with the vowel points, the cantillation and the notes on the bottom telling scribes how the correct text should be written,” Sharon Mintz, senior Jewish artefact specialist at the auction house, said in March.

Centuries of annotations and inscriptions reveal that the manuscript was sold by a man named Khalaf ben Abraham to Isaac ben Ezekiel al-Attar, who later transferred ownership to his two sons, Ezekiel and Maimon.

In the 13th Century, the codex was dedicated to a synagogue in Makisin, in north-eastern Syria.

After the town was destroyed by either by the Mongols later in the 13th Century or by the Timurids at the start of the 15th Century, the manuscript was entrusted for safekeeping to Salama ibn Abi al-Fakhr. It then disappeared in history for 500 years.

The Codex Sassoon’s most recent owner was Swiss investor Jacqui Safra, who bought it for £2m ($2.5m) at auction in London in 1989.

Kumasi residents express frustration over state of Suame Interchange Project

Some Kumasi residents are frustrated over the state of the Suame Interchange project after government cut sod for work to start in October last year.

During the sod-cutting ceremony, President Akufo-Addo assured residents of his commitment to complete the 4-tier interchange project.

But residents claim the project site has now turned into a hideout for hooligans.

Kumasi residents bemoan state of Suame Interchange project

The interchange project has suffered months of setbacks after appearing in the national budget thrice.

President Akufo-Addo on October 18, 2022, cut sod for construction works to begin on the project.

KMA Boss, Samuel Pyan, in an interview with JoyNews, said the government had already secured funding for the project.

He claims the contractors are on site.

Kumasi residents bemoan state of Suame Interchange project

“We have the contractor on site as we speak. They are working on some other roads that will be linked to the interchange but not the roundabout itself. There’s money for the project so we shouldn’t worry at all” he said.

But in an interview with a Kumasi-based radio station, Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said the government was yet to secure a loan for the project after IMF negotiations.

“We are done with everything. The problem now is that this project isn’t sponsored by the government of Ghana, we are seeking a loan for it from abroad but the IMF is keeping the project on hold. We are sure we will get the money by August” he indicated.

Residents who had high hopes for the project were astonished.

There are concerns the project site has turned into a hideout for hooligans.

They want the government to fulfil its promise of completing the project before the 2024 General Election.

GPRTU appeals to public to continue paying existing transport fares

After news about the 10% reduction in transport fares broke, commuters were anticipating a reflection on the ground but their joy was shattered.

This comes after the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) appealed to the general public to continue paying the existing fares until the leadership of the various transport unions convene to take a decision.

The new rates were supposed to take effect on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. However, many drivers are yet to comply.

The announcement came as a result of consistent marginal reductions in the price of fuel, providing an opportunity for operators to pass on some savings to commuters to give some financial relief.

In reaction to the development, the Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abass Imoro said, “There was a problem which came out with the reduction of 10%, so we said there should be a cease-fire.

He told in a Citi FM that “We are pleading with the general public to continue with the old fares till our leadership meets on Monday to look at the way forward.”

“He will f**k. Men don’t give a fuck about that person, he just wants to sort himself out”

Surprised by his statement, Annie asked whether he was talking about himself or men in general.

“Are you talking about generally or you’re talking about yourself?” Annie asked.

  • Investigator reveals key signs of a ‘romance scam’

Investigator reveals key signs of a ‘romance scam’

Ghana has seen an increase in social vices, ranging from mobile money fraud to petty theft. But another phenomenon gaining momentum by the day is romance scam.

This canker is no respect for people, as anyone can fall victim to it.

To prevent more people from becoming victims, certified investigator and fraud examiner Ransford Nana Addo Jr. shared how one can determine if they are falling prey to the crime.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr Addo Jr. emphasized that the scam can take various forms.

He pointed out that scammers predominantly gather information about their targets by stalking their social media accounts.

From there, the fraud examiner stated, the scammers proceed to make unsolicited calls or texts to their target.

But it doesn’t end there. According to Mr. Addo Jr., the scammer then tries to build a friendship with the target. When they have achieved this, they proceed to start a relationship by making the victim believe they share a common story.

“… at the end of the day, they begin to win your confidence, you begin to trust them, and you begin to make disclosure of things that you have,” the certified investigator indicated.

The next point that Mr Addo Jr. raised was that, once the scammer has established a relationship with their target, they eventually create an emergency situation – “a relative is ill and in need of money, or a worse situation” – after which they begin to avoid them.

This, Mr Addo explained, is a manipulative method used by the scammer to extort money from their victim.

“When they avoid you, you get worried and want to help them solve the problem, and that is when you begin to pack money, send money to an account and they withdraw,” the fraud examiner stated on Friday, May 19, 2023.

The expert added that another characteristic of ‘romance scammers’ is the tendency to avoid physical meetings.

He told the host of the show, “at any point in time when you want to meet them, they won’t allow you to meet them. That is a warning sign.”

Subsequently, Mr Addo Jr noted that the ‘predators’ ensure that they build a relationship to the extent that they can have an emotional connection with their targets. When this happens, it becomes “difficult for you [the victim] to move a day without talking to them.”

One thing is certain: once a scammer gets a hold of their target, it becomes easy to extort money from their victims.

With that, he reiterated that ‘romance scams’ take various forms, however, the warning signs are very clear.

Ablakwa ‘wails’ for Ghanaians over ‘painful’ IMF deal

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expresed concern over the conditions of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) deal negotiated for the country; describing it as “painful.”

Ablakwa, in an interview on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, on Friday, May 19, 2023, described the people who negotiated the IMF deal on behalf of the people of Ghana as wicked.

He added that the IMF programme, which was approved on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, will bring more hardship on ordinary Ghanaians.

“This is going to be the most painful, the most bitter IMF programme. I asked myself who negotiated this on behalf of Ghanaians? Does the person have a heart? Does the person care about Ghanaians?

“The analysis we have shows that because of this (the IMF) bailout, there are going to be 50 new tax measures… income tax is coming to be progressive.

“There is going to be quarterly tariff adjustment. So, every quarter, electricity tariffs are going to go up, can you believe that, every quarter?” the MP asked.

Also, Ablakwa said that the deal negotiated on behalf of the people of Ghana also includes an additional debt restructuring programme.

He added that public sector employment will also be restricted for the 3 years span of the IMF programme.

    Background:

The Executive Board of the IMF unanimously approved the $3 billion bailout for Ghana at a meeting Wednesday [May 17, 2023] in Washington.

$600 million out of the $3 billion loan was disbursed on the day of the approval of the bailout and $350 million would be disbursed every six months for the three-year programme.

Earlier, Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, had expressed optimism, that the swelling goodwill that Ghana was getting from the international community, including its creditors could guarantee the approval of the loan.

She added that her outfit was pushing the bilateral creditors to quickly provide the financial assurance needed for the board to approve the deal.

Prior to this, Ghana had completed all prior actions necessary to receive support for its economic recovery programme, the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Given the gravity of the case and its associated ramifications, he appealed to the general public to support Hajia with prayers.

“If she has been extradited from the UK to the US, it’s all part of the law. I also just got out of a court case. Let’s all pray for her so she’ll be strong to go through all of these. I can only pray for her to get out of this better,” he said.

    Background

Several international news portals and the United States FBI had reported that Hajia4Reall had been extradited to the United States from the United Kingdom over alleged involvement in a $2 million romance scam targeting older, single Americans.

Federal prosecutors established that the 30-year-old model appeared in Manhattan federal court on Monday, May 15, for her alleged involvement in a series of romance schemes.

The news has since flooded social media, topping Twitter trends amidst massive reactions from netizens online.

Speaking in an interview with KingdomFM’s Fiifi Pratt on the matter, Nhyiraba Kojo said on the day of Hajia4Reall’s arrest, they met at the GUCCI store where she shopped for some items.

On that very day, she bought from the same shop I bought my stuff. This sunglass I’m even wearing was part of the items I bought that day. She even shared a post on social media and afterward, we heard she was arrested,” he stated.

He added that legal matters are very sensitive, and as such, he can only pray to God to strengthen her in times like this.

Nhyiraba Kojo said he also just got out of prison over a contempt case, so he isn’t in the right capacity to speak about such issues.

  • Photo of Hilda Baci holding a certificate from the Guinness World Records is doctored

Photo of Hilda Baci holding a certificate from the Guinness World Records is doctored

A photo of Nigerian chef Hilda Baci allegedly holding a certificate from the Guinness World Records is doctored.

This is according to fact checking platform, Dubawa.com. After conducting a fact-check, dubawa concluded that the photo is not authentic.

Find the full details of the investigations below:

Claim: A Twitter user has published a picture purported to be of Nigerian chef Hilda Baci holding a certificate from the Guinness World Record.

Verdict: Doctored. The image purported to be Nigerian chef Hilda Baci holding a certificate from the Guinness World Record is false. Using Tineye image search, DUBAWA traced the original photo to Rawpixel, a website for publishing stock photos.

    Full Text

A Twitter user @HerStoryUG has shared a picture purporting to beNigerian chef Hilda Baci with a certificate from the Guinness World Record for breaking a record of 100 hours of uninterrupted cooking.

The current record holder is Lata Tondon, an Indian chef who achieved the feat in 2019 with 87 hours and 45 minutes. According to reports, she broke the record for cooking for over 96 hours. Already, Hilda Baci has received massive support for her attempt to break the current Guinness World Record.

However, the Twitter caption of the photo by @HerStoryUG, on May 16, 2023, says, “Nigerian chef Hilda Bassey has won the Guinness world record for completing 100 hours of cooking by an individual. Congratulations Hilda.”

The post has already received over 53,000 views and over 500 views. Even though reports have been widespread that Ms Baci has broken the Guinness World Record, DUBAWA decided to fact-check the image to discover if she has officially received her certificate from Guinness World Record.

    Verification

Investigation using Fotoforensics suggests that the image has had some edits done to it. The JPEG% in the Fotoforensics tool also shows a mass repetition of numbers. This is a red flag. This suggests that the image has, possibly, been edited multiple times.

DUBAWA also ran a Tineye image search and was directed to Rawpixel, a website dedicated to publishing stock photos. DUBAWA saw the original photo captioned, “Cheerful black woman showing a vv sign with a blank speech bubble on the website.”

In the photo above, it is evident that the face of the Nigerian chef Ms Baci has been edited into the original photo. The certificate allegedly from the Guinness World Record is also doctored.

Meanwhile, a reply via the official Twitter handle of Guinness World Records indicated that the organisation knows Hilda’s fantastic record. Still, there will be a need to review all the evidence before officially confirming her record.

“Hilda began cooking on Thursday and continued through to Monday, reportedly whipping up 55 recipes and more than 100 meals in a whopping 100-hour stint,” the May 16, 2023 publication reads.

“Officials on our records team look forward to reviewing the evidence and hope to be able to verify Hilda’s efforts as a new record very soon,” the publication continued.

A statement released by Hilda’s team confirmed that they were yet to be recognized by the Guinness World Record.

“We would like you to know we haven’t received the award yet, and we’re currently working on uploading our evidence,” a statement issued on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, read.

Bassey’s team released the statement via Twitter.

In view of this, Ms Baci is not yet certified by Guinness World Records. If Guinness World Record confirms her, she will overtake the current world record holder, Lata Tondon.

‌’Why only second? Yes, because they are halfwits.’‌

Putin claimed the more sanctions were imposed on Russia, the more consolidated people would become behind him.‌

He claimed 90 per cent of society now backed him.

Contradicting himself, he demanded yet more cohesion.‌

‘[My opponents] say that Russia should be divided into dozens of small state entities and it is quite obvious what for,’ he said.

Nhyiraba Kojo recounts seeing Hajia4Reall at Gucci shop prior to arrest

Ghanaian singer cum businessman, Nhyiraba Kojo, has reacted to Hajia4Reall’s arrest and extradition from the United Kingdom to the United States.

The ‘NK City’ club owner has joined the list of celebrities who have waded into the conversation which has been topical in the media space since Tuesday, May 16, 2023.

Speaking in an interview with KingdomFM’s Fiifi Pratt, Nhyiraba Kojo said on the day of Hajia4Reall’s arrest, they met at the GUCCI store where she shopped for some items.

“I don’t know much about the case. All I know is that we were all in the UK at the time the incident happened. Prior to the incident, we even met at the GUCCI shop where she bought some stuff.

“If she has been extradited from the UK to the US, it’s all part of the law. I also just got out of a court case. Let’s all pray for her so she’ll be strong to go through all of these. I can only pray for her to get out of this better,” he added.

    Background

Several international news portals and the United States FBI had reported that Hajia4Reall had been extradited to the United States from the United Kingdom over alleged involvement in a $2 million romance scam targeting older, single Americans.

  • Putin’s upset ‘could turn to nukes’ as his missiles were downed in Kiev – Ex-US Army official

Putin’s upset ‘could turn to nukes’ as his missiles were downed in Kiev – Ex-US Army official

Following the downing of his hypersonic missiles by Ukraine, Vladimir Putin “will likely turn to nuclear weapons,” according to an ex-US Army official.

On Tuesday, Ukraine’s air defence system forced the Kremlin to ground its most intense aerial attack to date against Kyiv.

According to the US Centre for Strategic International Studies, Russian Kinzhal missiles—which translate as “dagger” in Russian—are some of the most advanced nuclear-capable weapons in the country’s arsenal.

Kevin Ryan, an associate fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. said Ukraine stopping Putin’s ‘unstoppable’ rockets has humiliated him.

‘Putin is running out of ways to escalate the war in a way that would force Ukraine – and the West – to back down,’ he told the MailOnline.

‘His massive invasion and frequent bombing campaigns have failed to give him a decisive victory.

‘If he cannot force a victory with conventional weapons, he will probably turn to nuclear weapons.’

According to UAwar, citing Ukrainian ministry data, Russia has lost nearly 179,000 soldiers, 3600 tanks and 2,750 artillery systems in the year-long conflict.

‘Russia’s conventional (non-nuclear) forces are already showing themselves not up to the task in Ukraine,’ Ryan added.

‘That is why Putin has relied so heavily on nuclear threats.

‘If it’s proven that the Kinzhal has not lived up to expectations, the effectiveness of the whole spectrum of Russia’s strategic weapons, nuclear and nonnuclear, are put in doubt.’

The Russian president has long made often vague threats about using nuclear weapons in the war.

From Putin threatening the use of ‘all available means’ to massive missiles being carted around in front of cameras, the Kremlin has made its stockpile clear.

Experts have been conflicted about whether Putin could actually push the button.

The Heritage Foundation, a US think-tank, said in March that Putin’s ‘martyr complex’ could push him either way as his dreams of victory ‘collapse’.

Though, other analysts have said what could put Putin off from using nuclear arms is the wind, as it could blow radiation straight into Russian territory.

In 2020, the Kremlin said it has four reasons why it would ever resort to nuclear weapons, such as a pre-emptive strike or in response to a nuclear strike against it.

The executive order added that the only other two reasons for long-range nukes would be responding to a threat that would limit its control over its nuclear arms, such as a cyberattack, or when the ‘existence’ of Russia itself is threatened.

‘Russian doctrine has long accepted the use of shorter-range tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield and it is much more cautious about long-range strategic nuclear weapons designed to hit the enemy’s homeland,’ the Heritage Foundation added.

Hypersonic missiles can travel at least five times faster than the speed of sound (about a mile a second) and can swerve most defence systems.

After Tuesday’s barrage, US officials confirmed an American-made Patriot system – a top-of-the-line ground-based air defence system – had been damaged.

In a Telegram statement, Ukraine’s air force did not specify whether the Patriot system was involved in the shooting down of Russia’s hypersonic missiles.

‘Let’s keep the sky!’ the statement added.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky struck a similarly triumphant tone in a video speech to the Council of Europe, a major human rights organisation.

‘At 3 o’clock in the morning, our people woke up to explosions,’ he said, ‘eighteen Russian missiles of different types were in our skies, in particular, ballistic ones, which the terrorist state has boasted about.

‘We were told such missiles would bring a guaranteed death because they are supposedly impossible to shoot down.

‘But all lives were protected. All missiles were shot down, including ballistic ones – 100%.

    ‘This is a historical result.’

Following their arrest, a search conducted by the police on the two accused persons revealed two identity cards bearing their names, and photos with the serial numbers; 193955 and 193954 respectively.

Summons emanated from the ECG which appeared to be forged and one Mobile phone which contained the Tigo sim card that was used to receive the amount from the complainant’s husband.

Further checks also revealed the Barcode on the two ID cards belonged to one late Kingsley Darko, a former employee of the ECG.

Ghanaian activist swims 450km across Volta Lake to highlight textile pollution

Yvette Tetteh, a Ghanaian-British agribusiness entrepreneur, athlete, and activist, completed the longest documented swim in Ghanaian history by swimming 450 kilometers across the Volta River from Buipe to Ada.

A colorful procession of drummers and performers marched along the riverbanks to honor Yvette’s and the local communities’ extraordinary accomplishments.

This arduous voyage was undertaken by Yvette, a 30-year-old athlete and environmental activist, as part of an expedition organized by The Or Foundation.

This difficult voyage was undertaken by Yvette, a 30-year-old athlete and environmental advocate, as part of an expedition organized by The Or Foundation.

Accompanied by the research vessel “The Woman Who Does Not Fear,” the expedition aimed to conduct a comprehensive study on microfiber pollution caused by textile waste and raise awareness about the impact of refuse colonization on the region’s ecosystems.

The crowd that gathered in Ada to witness the conclusion of Yvette’s voyage applauded her extraordinary accomplishment.

According to Yvette, the final leg posed a formidable upstream current at the Ada estuary caused by the Gulf of Guinea.

However, her unyielding tenacity enabled her to prevail and reach the resort, where a jubilant celebration awaited her.

Yvette Tetteh, a Ghanaian activist, speaks after swimming 450 kilometers across the Volta River in forty days.

Yvette and her team, the Swim Team, navigated the Black Volta and Volta Lake, pausing in towns and villages to observe the effects of rising water levels and engage with local communities.

Despite rough seas and a sluggish pace, their resolve and teamwork prevailed throughout the voyage.

A summary of Yvette Tetteh’s 450-kilometer swim across Ghana’s Volta River.

This expedition aimed to promote awareness regarding textile waste in Ghana.

As Yvette emerged from the water in her custom-made recycled swimsuit, the chief, community leaders, and ebullient onlookers applauded her.

The background of the solar-powered research vessel signified The Or Foundation’s commitment to preventing water pollution by measuring its extent along the coast of Accra.

During the mission, a kayaker ensured Yvette’s safety on the water, while the expedition documentarian, Ofoe Amegavie, and the Science Lead/Communications Manager, Edwin Dzobo, played crucial roles in the kayak duties.

The expedition builds on The Or Foundation’s year-and-a-half of scientific investigation into the environmental impact of used clothing waste in Ghana, which receives an astounding 15 million items of used clothing per week.

By shedding light on the effects of textile waste, the foundation intends to address the country’s significant environmental and social repercussions, including the overflowing volumes of clothing waste that led to the explosion of the country’s only engineered landfill in 2019.

The objective of the Agbetsi Living Water Swim expedition was to examine the impact of textile waste in Ghana.

10-year-old abducted, sexually molested by 40-year-old

A 10-year-old girl has been sexually molested by a 40-year-old man at Anaji Queen of Peace near Takoradi.

The man, who has been identified as just Thomas is a mason by profession, and is reported to have abducted the girl for six days.

Dailyguidenetwork.com reports that Thomas locked the little girl in his room and only allowed her out when he returns from work.

In an interview, the father of the victim, Confidence Fiadzo, commended the police for their swift intervention in arresting the suspect.

He indicated that he had just moved into the area with his children from Mpatado.

According to him, in the early morning of Saturday, May 6, 2023, his 10-year-old daughter decided to go and fetch water from a well at Anaji Queen of Peace, which is about 10 minutes’ walk from their new residence, and did not return.

He added that he realised his daughter was not returning home, so he asked her siblings to follow up.

“They combed all the area, including the location of the well and all uncompleted buildings, but they could not find my daughter,” he said.

He added that after failing to find her, he reported the case to the police and made some radio announcements, and published her photograph on social media.

Mr. Fiadzo told DAILY GUIDE that a female neighbour of the suspect later saw the little girl come out of the man’s room.

According to the neighbour, because “the man did not have a wife or a child, she became suspicious after seeing the little girl coming out of his room. So she reported the case to the Anaji police,” Dailyguide added.

The police rushed to the place, rescued the girl and arrested the suspect, and called the father to inform him.

They later directed the father to send her daughter to the hospital for an examination, and it was there that the doctors confirmed that the little girl was sexually molested by the suspect.

The suspect is currently at the Kwesimintsim Police Station assisting with investigations.
