Herbal medicine practitioner nabbed for sexually molesting 12 year old

A 43-year-old driver who is also a herbal medicine practitioner is in the grip of the law for sexually molesting a 12 year old girl.

The suspect appeared before the Twifo Praso District Court for allegedly licking and fondling the vagina of a 12-year-old girl at Twifo Eduabeng in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region.

Narrating the incident, the prosecution, Chief Inspector Joseph Kusah, noted that the accused, George Antwi, who is also a herbal medicine practitioner, on January 3, 2024, around 8 a.m. invited the victim to his house for medication because of skin diseases that she had been battling with.

He subsequently lured the victim into his bedroom, stripped her naked and pushed her onto the bed after convincing her that he was applying medicine on her body.

The accused then switched off the lights, pulled the curtains to cover the windows, opened the radio loudly and began licking and fondling the victim’s vagina.

Unknown to Antwi, the two younger sisters of the victim had sneaked into the room and had witnessed the incident.

In an effort to keep them silent, Antwi threatened to kill them and their parents if they informed anybody in the community.

Despite the threat, Chief Inspector Kusah told the court, the children disclosed it to their parents and a formal complaint was made to the police while a medical form was issued

He said Antwi was arrested and charged with two counts, indecent assault and threats of harm.

The court presided over by Maxwell Foli Kpodo granted him bail in the sum of GhS5,000.00 with two sureties after the accused pleaded not guilty.

The court further ordered the suspect not to travel out of the jurisdiction until the conclusion of the case.

  • ‘Deportations from Rwanda might be few’ – Cleverly

‘Deportations from Rwanda might be few’ – Cleverly

The person in charge of home affairs said that the number of people being sent out of the country under the agreement with Rwanda may not be very high, depending on other things.

James Cleverly told members of parliament that the deal with the east African country is just one part of the government’s plan to address illegal migration.

Sending back goods to other countries could also make a big difference in the amount sent, he said.

But, he wouldn’t guess how many people would be sent away.

He said the agreement with Rwanda has no limit on the exact number, it depends on a lot of other things.

People are wondering how much the scheme costs because the UK has paid £240 million to Rwanda, but no one has been sent there yet because of legal problems.

Under the five-year plan, the UK will send some asylum seekers to Rwanda. They can then choose to apply for refugee status in Rwanda or seek asylum in another safe country.

MPs passed a law to bring back the scheme after the Supreme Court said it was against the law. But it’s likely to face a lot of disagreement in the House of Lords.

Even though some people disagree, government officials want to start flights by spring. They hope this will stop people from crossing the Channel in small boats.

At a meeting of a government committee, a high-ranking official said that 33,085 people who are seeking asylum have entered the system since new laws about removing illegal arrivals started last July.

    ‘Create a signal’

When asked how many people could be sent to Rwanda, Mr. Cleverly told the MPs that nearly that many could be sent, but it depends on the situation.

He said it was possible that many people in that group would go back to their own country. And making deals with other countries could also have a big effect.

“It might be if we manage to make return agreements work, and if things change in other countries, the number could be very small,” he said.

He was asked many times, but he wouldn’t give a specific number of deportations needed to scare off potential migrants. However, he did say that they would need to send a strong message to potential migrants.

Home Office officials have said no to approving the plan because they don’t think it’s worth the money. They say they can’t tell how well it will stop migrants until flights to Rwanda start.

    ‘Gimmick’
Government leaders say that once the program is functioning, it will save money for taxpayers by decreasing the amount of money the government currently spends on housing migrants in UK hotels, which is currently £8 million per day.

However, the department has found it difficult to send back many of the small boat migrants who have come to the UK in the last few years.

Last month, it was found out that only 1,040 people who arrived in small boats and were not foreign criminals have been sent back to their country or another country in the past three years.

Out of these, only 408 people were not from Albania. The government made an agreement with Albania to send them back quickly in late 2022.

As part of the EU, the UK could send back many migrants every year using the Dublin regulations. But the EU has said no to including this in a new agreement.

Labour said the Rwanda policy is just a trick and they will get rid of it if they win the election later this year.

It also wants to make a new agreement with the EU to send migrants back there.

The party has said it might be OK with allowing a certain number of immigrants to come to the UK, but they haven’t said how many.

  • Meet Salamatu, Dakota and Afia, Ghana’s Solar ‘grandmas’ powering communities in Ghana

Meet Salamatu, Dakota and Afia, Ghana’s Solar ‘grandmas’ powering communities in Ghana

Three remarkable women, Salamatu, Dakota, and Afia, fondly known as the “Solar Grandmothers,” are lighting up their communities by harnessing the power of the sun.

These inspirational women have become the driving force behind a sustainable energy revolution, bringing hope and power to previously underserved areas.

Armed with resilience and a commitment to make a difference, these grandmothers have embarked on a journey to bring solar energy to their communities.

They joined two other women to successfully electrify 150 households in their off-grid communities, and are championing a renewable energy revolution.

The ‘solar grandmothers’, five in five villages in the region, received training in Barefoot College in India, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the Global Environment Facility Small Grant Programmme (UNDP GEF-SGP). The Barefoot College trains rural women to install and maintain solar lighting and power in their villages.

    Overcoming the Odds

Traditionally, Dupari, Zikpuri and other communities without electricity in Ghana mostly use kerosene lanterns to light their homes.

When they selected us to go to India, we were afraid because we have never travelled abroad before. Our biggest fear was that we only speak our local language and haven’t been to school, so going to school in another country sounded odd”, Dakota noted.

With the desire to light-up their homes and communities, Dakota, Salamatu, and Afia took up the challenge to honour the confidence the communities reposed in them by selecting them. They embarked on the “unknown” journey with the hope of exchanging darkness with light in return.

Leaving their region and country for the first time in their lifetime, the women joined other women from different countries at the Barefoot College for a six-month practical training in applied solar technology. Given that they have no formal education, they were taught with sign language and color-coded circuits to build solar-powered lamps and chargers, and to install solar power in their communities.

Everyone is happy with us because we have connected several homes to electricity. It is such a great joy to have light, charge our phones, watch TV, and do other basic things with the power”, Salamatu stated.

Solar grandmas powering communities in Ghana

    Why older women solar engineers?

The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 calls for gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls at all levels. In line with this, the UNDP GEF-SGP solar power initiative falls under a bigger forest conservation project. This project prioritizes women empowerment with different initiatives including women dry season vegetable farming and shea butter processing.

Moreover, women are the focus of solar power projects that Barefoot College runs. They believe that men and young people are likely to migrate from their village in search of other opportunities after training. Older women, on the other hand, have their roots in the communities and mostly remain to serve.

“We have been installing solar power for houses who need it and maintain it. Maintenance mostly requires change of fuse or batteries”, said Afia.

The women have since imparted the knowledge particularly to their children who support them with the installation.

Solar grandmas powering communities in Ghana

‘I trained my youngest son who used to help me but now he is gone to school in the city. He supports when he comes for vacation, Salamatu added.

Ghana’s electricity access rate per World Bank’s 2021 data, stands at 86.63 percent, with 74 percent of rural residents and 95 percent of urban residents connected to the electricity grid. Though Ghana’s electricity access is said to be the highest in Sub Sahara Africa, there is the need to bridge the remaining gap, particularly the rural-urban divide.

The success story of the ‘solar grandmothers’ is an inspiration and can be replicated. The use of solar energy in the communities is contributing to the reduction of fossil fuel use and pollution. It is estimated that about 3,000 litres of kerosene that were consumed monthly by the people, have been replaced with solar lights. Not only is this healthier for the people in the communities but also good for the planet. Moreover, mobile phones usage has increased, and school children are able to learn in the evening with the solar light.

To lift out remaining communities living in the dark, public-private partnerships remain critical. This way, we can unlock more investments to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

  • Official YouTube channel of TB Joshua shut down

Official YouTube channel of TB Joshua shut down

YouTube has shut down the official channel of TB Joshua‘s church because it broke the rules against hate speech.

Weeks later, the BBC and openDemocracy found proof that the preacher who has passed away, abused and hurt many people sexually.

Emmanuel TV helped him go from being a small-town pastor to a famous person all around the world.

TB Joshua passed away in 2021, and now his wife Evelyn Joshua is in charge of running his church, the Synagogue Church of All Nations (Scoan).

The church has not said anything about the removal, but has stated that previous claims of wrongdoing were not true.

Emmanuel TV had over 500,000 people who followed them on YouTube and had millions of views on their videos.

This is the second time in three years that their YouTube channel has been suspended because they broke the rules of the platform.

As part of the BBC’s investigation, openDemocracy looked at Emmanuel TV‘s website and found at least 50 mean videos on YouTube.

Their group told YouTube about the videos and the account got banned on 29 January.

Google’s video-sharing platform, owned by Google, said that Emmanuel TV was shut down for breaking the rules against hate speech.

TB Joshua was well-known for his “healing” work and recorded many services showing him helping sick and disabled people. But, some former church members have said that these claims are not true.

openDemocracy wrote an article that showed videos from Emmanuel TV of people with mental health problems being locked up, false medical information, and attacks on women who spoke out about TB Joshua’s sexual abuse.

Emmanuel TV’s TV channel was taken off the air on 17 January by MultiChoice, a South African company that operates DStv and GOtv.

For a long time, the channel was very successful as a Christian network, reaching millions of people worldwide.

After the BBC published their investigation on TB Joshua, some people who wrote about it have been attacked online by accounts related to his church and Emmanuel TV. openDemocracy also told YouTube about these accounts, but YouTube hasn’t taken them down yet.

YouTube and other social media sites are being closely looked at because of their rules about keeping people safe online.

  • Thai Reformist Party may be dissolved after legal setback

Thai Reformist Party may be dissolved after legal setback

The party in Thailand that got the most votes in last year’s election might have to shut down because the court said its main idea is against the law.

Move Forward is not in the government, but it promised to campaign to change the laws about speaking badly about the royal family. The court in Thailand found that this promise goes against the constitution.

Anti-government laws are being used more and more to stop people from criticizing the government, activists say.

The leader of Move Forward might not be allowed to be in politics anymore.

Pita Limjaroenrat is a young politician who went to Harvard. People thought he was a big problem for Thailand’s king and the powerful military group. In 2023, he got a lot of people to vote for him by saying he would control their power.

His efforts to become prime minister were stopped by the Senate, even though he was not chosen by the people.

Last week, he won another court case trying to stop him from being in parliament. However, he and his party did not win the important second case on Wednesday for their main policy platform.

The Constitutional Court said that Move Forward’s promise to change the law about insulting the king was like trying to overthrow the whole government in Thailand.

The decision doesn’t come with a punishment right away, but many people think it will be used to shut down Move Forward and stop its leaders from being involved in politics for a few years.

By making this decision, the court has basically made it impossible for the elected parliament to change the lese majeste law.

Many people think the law in Thailand restricts freedom of speech and is too strict.

Earlier this month, a 30-year-old man in Bangkok was sent to prison for 50 years for saying bad things about the Thai king.

Since November 2020, more than 260 people have been accused of breaking the law. This date marks the start of King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s rule.

The Thai courts said that people are not allowed to talk about the powerful royal family.

Four years ago, Move Forward’s old party, called Future Forward, was also shut down after doing surprisingly well in an election.

The Constitutional Court’s action caused many student protests that lasted for months. The protesters demanded big changes to the monarchy, which had never been asked for before.

Today, many protest leaders are being charged with breaking the lese majeste law and could go to prison for a long time.

The court has also decided if it is legal to ask for a change to lese majeste.

In November 2021, the court decided that three top activists who asked for changes in the monarchy during the protests of 2020 were secretly planning to overthrow the monarchy.

It told them to stop and all three have been charged with many crimes since then.

This new decision says that it’s not okay to propose any changes to the lese majeste law.

Move Forward said it was the job of the elected parliament to check a law in the regular penal code. Thailand’s lese majeste law has been changed two times.

Furthermore, during its election campaign, the party avoided supporting calls to completely get rid of the law, and instead only suggested making some changes to it. It received the most votes compared to other parties, so it had a strong public support for its proposed changes.

The judges decided that Move Forward and its leaders did things that showed they wanted to get rid of Thailand’s democratic government, with the King as the Head of State.

It told them to not do anything that showed they wanted to get rid of the law that protects the king, and they can only change the law in the right way, through the government.

This means that the law could be changed by the government, but people can’t talk about it on social media or in public.

With all the times in Thailand that political parties have been shut down and leaders banned from politics for not very good reasons, there will be a lot of pressure to do the same to Move Forward.

Some people from Thailand will think that this was the main reason for submitting the petition to the court.

First PoW swap since plane disaster between Russia and Ukraine

Russia and Ukraine traded soldiers they had captured. This is the first time they have done so since a Russian plane crashed, and Russia said it had 65 prisoners of war on it.

Russia’s military says both sides received 195 soldiers back.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said that 207 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians were brought back on Wednesday.

Kyiv doubts Russia’s statement that Ukrainian prisoners were on the plane that crashed in Russia last week.

Russian investigators now believe that the Il-76 military transport plane was shot down by a missile in the Belgorod region based on information from its flight recorders.

The Russian army said that 65 Ukrainian soldiers were on the plane going to the area for a prisoner swap.

  • Biden faces electoral dangers following fatal drone strike

Biden faces electoral dangers following fatal drone strike

The Biden administration was very worried about the deaths of three American soldiers in a drone attack in Jordan on Sunday. Two women and a man from Georgia were killed.

This means the White House has to make a very hard choice about what to do next.

President Biden met with his national security team on Monday, and he has made a decision about what to do after thinking about his options. He had the option to attack places that are friendly with Iran, attack Iran itself, or not attack at all.

Every choice has a lot of danger, especially in a year when the president has to appear powerful but also needs to make sure things don’t get worse.

“We don’t want a big fight with Iran,” said John Kirby, who speaks for the National Security Council, to reporters. “We don’t want the fighting to spread to more countries in the area, but we have to take necessary actions. ”

The Biden administration must think about how to deal with Iran while Israel and Hamas are fighting.

Since October 7th, the most important thing for the US has been to prevent the fighting in Gaza from spreading to other areas. This is what led to the careful American reactions to the earlier attacks on its troops in the area.

This serious attack has made the US feel like it has to hit back hard. However, it is still important to find the right balance.

President Biden needs to figure out a way to send a strong message that will stop bad behavior, without making the situation worse.

Mr Biden’s opponents in politics don’t have to deal with this problem because they are not in power.

Donald Trump, who is ahead in the race to become the Republican presidential candidate, made a strong statement on social media on Sunday night, blaming the president for the situation.

“Another terrible attack on the United States happened because Joe Biden is weak and gives up too easily,” said Mr.

The old president didn’t say what he would do if he was still in charge. He also hasn’t said anything else about it. Other Republicans have also spoken their mind.

Senator Tom Cotton said that we need to strongly fight back with military force against these attacks. He said that if the president did anything less, it would show that he was a coward.

Mitch McConnell, the top Republican in the Senate, said that Iran should face serious and damaging consequences. Senator Lindsay Graham said America should attack important places inside Iran.

However, most important members of the Democratic party did not take extreme action. They wanted those responsible to be punished and for the US to target groups supported by Iran instead of attacking Iran directly.

Senator Ben Cardin, who leads the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that we cannot ignore this attack. “I am in favor of President Biden’s careful and fair reaction. ”

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal said the same thing, writing on X that it is very important to have a strong and precise response against forces backed by Iran.

The Biden government has stated that they will not make their decision on how to act based on polls or the upcoming election. “He’s not thinking about politics,” John Kirby told the news.

In an election year, decisions about foreign policy are always influenced by politics within the country. How will American voters see the military’s actions or lack of actions.

Many people think that voters don’t care much about a president’s foreign policy when they decide who to vote for. With problems in the Middle East and Ukraine, more voters think it’s important this year.

By November, people may forget about the specific attack, but they still care about how their country is seen by the world.

I’ve heard people all over the US say they are worried that our country looks weak right now. They like that Donald Trump promises to be a strong leader who will make sure no other country can bully America.

Talking about military strategy and global diplomacy is easier on the campaign trail than in the White House situation room.

Joe Biden has to make a very important decision that could have big effects in the Middle East. However, his answer could also have consequences in a very important election year for our country.

  • Kenya’s Ruto confirms mission to Haiti will take place despite court ruling

Kenya’s Ruto confirms mission to Haiti will take place despite court ruling

A leader in Kenya’s opposition has said that President William Ruto is planning to ignore a court decision that says police should not be sent to Haiti.

Ekuru Aukot was able to successfully stop the army from being sent out by taking the case to court. He believes that only the president has the power to send out the army, not the police.

The court said that the mission was not allowed by law.

MrRuto said on Tuesday that the mission could happen “as soon as next week” if all the necessary paperwork is completed to meet the court’s requirements.

In November, Kenya’s government approved sending 1,000 officers to lead a group of countries’ force in Haiti. This is because gangs in Haiti are trying to take over more areas.

Last week, a judge said that the National Security Council in Kenya, which is led by the president, cannot send regular police to other countries.

It said that the council can only send soldiers, not police, to keep peace in places like Haiti.

The court said both countries need to agree before the soldiers can go there.

Justice Chacha Mwita said Kenya’s plan to send police to Haiti is a good idea, but it must follow the law.

Mr Ruto said at a meeting in Rome that he thinks a request will come soon to meet the Kenyan court’s demands.

“The mission is going as planned. ” He said the mission is a big job for all people.

When they asked if Haiti is trying to get what it needs, Mr. Ruto said “Yes, definitely. ”

“Haiti wrote this formally, not recently, but several months ago,” he said.

Korir Sing’oei, a high-ranking official in Kenya’s foreign ministry, said on X that sending police to another country would not break the law if it follows a mutual agreement between the two countries.

ButAukot believes that the deployment needs more than just the agreement between two countries.

Understand Justice Mwita’s thoughts on the differences between ‘service’ and ‘force’. According to the law and the constitution, you can’t send the police to work in another country, Mr. Aukot said on X. He accused the foreign affairs official of giving the president incorrect information.

During the interview on Tuesday, Mr. Ruto emphasized that it was carried out by the police instead of the military.

The Kenyan government said it would ask for another decision in court.

Last week, the US said it backs Kenya’s plan to challenge the court’s decision.

The Kenyan opposition told the US to stay out of Kenya’s business.

It is not clear when the Kenyan government will go to court and if other countries who promised to send small forces to support the multinational mission will do it on their own.

Some countries including the Bahamas and Antigua and Barbuda will send their military forces, and the US will give $200 million to help with the mission.

An official from the United Nations said last week that the violence caused by gangs in Haiti has become very serious, with almost 5,000 deaths reported last year.

Putin’s opponent files for presidential candidature in Rusia

Boris Nadezhdin, who is challenging the Kremlin , says he has gathered enough signatures to run for president in Russia.

The old local politician has become known for speaking his mind about Mr. Putin and Russia’s full invasion of Ukraine.

Mr Nadezhdin said he gave the electoral authorities more than 100,000 signatures they needed.

The group in charge of elections needs to look at his application now.

Vladimir Putin, the current president, has signed up to run for the election as an independent candidate in March. It is likely that he will win and serve another six years as president.

Mr Nadezhdin, 60, was a member of the local government for more than 30 years. In a country where people who disagree have been arrested or killed, he has been able to criticize Mr. Putin without getting in trouble, at least for now.

He just said the president has almost ruined the important parts of Russia’s government, and he told the BBC that if he’s chosen, his first job will be to stop the war in Ukraine.

Right after the deadline today, Mr. Nadezhdin posted a picture of himself standing next to some boxes filled with papers that have his supporters’ signatures on them.

This is something I am very proud of – the result of the hard work of many people working tirelessly for many days. He said on X (Twitter) that the things you waited for in long lines in the cold are in those boxes.

Many Russians stood in line in the cold all over the country to add their name to the list of people supporting Mr.

Vladimir Putin has been in charge of Russia’s politics since 2000. In 2020, they changed the rules so he could stay in charge past 2024.

If he wins in March, he will be the president until 2030. After that, he can serve for six more years until 2036 if he chooses to run for election again.

A person who owns part of the company said they paid too much and is taking it to court.

Judge Kathaleen McCormick said the payment was a very large amount that was not fair to the owners of the company. She also said the way the payment was approved had many problems.

She decided that the contract must be cancelled.

The agreement on how much money to pay was made in 2018 and was the largest ever in US corporate history. This helped Mr. Musk become the richest person in the world. In November 2023, Bloomberg and Forbes said his money is between $198 billion and $220 billion.

Tesla’s deal connected Mr. Musk’s pay to how well Tesla’s stock does and how much money the company makes. He doesn’t get paid.

But the owner of some of the Tesla company, Richard Tornetta, sued to take back the award because he thinks the boss got too much money.

After many years of fighting in court, a trial started in November 2022. Tesla directors were trying to explain that the big payment to Mr. Musk was meant to make sure he keeps focusing on the company. Musk is known as one of the most active and successful entrepreneurs in the world.

However, in her 201-page decision published on Tuesday, Judge McCormick stated that the Tesla directors had been influenced by the excitement about Mr. Musk’s celebrity status.

Furthermore, Musk had a close connection with the Tesla officials who were responsible for discussing the pay award. She mentioned his long relationship with the person in charge of deciding how much people get paid.

Mr Musk has been doing business with Antonio Gracia for over 20 years, said the judge.

After the decision was made, Greg Varallo, a lawyer for the Tesla shareholder Mr. Tornetta, said it was a “good day for the good guys,” in an email reported by Reuters.

Mr Musk posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) saying “Don’t register your company in Delaware”.

“I suggest setting up a business in Nevada or Texas if you want the shareholders to make decisions,” he said. He asked his followers if Tesla should move its legal headquarters to Texas, where its main office is located.

The judge’s decision can be challenged in the Delaware Supreme Court.

Tesla’s stock went down by about 2. 5% in after-hours trading in New York. They are worth 20% less this year than they were before.

Mr Musk is the boss and a big owner of Tesla. He also has other companies like X, SpaceX, and Neuralink.

Mr Musk sold a lot of his Tesla shares to buy X. Now he owns about 13% of the company. He wants to own even more.

When Tesla offered Mr. Musk a pay package in 2018, a lot of people noticed and talked about it. Many shareholders’ advisors suggested not to vote for the plan because they believe it is too generous.

The package was much larger than the salaries of the top 200 CEOs in America combined in 2021, according to research firm Equilar.

Brian Quinn, a teacher at Boston College Law School, told the BBC that it was difficult to say that a deal like this is right, because Mr. Musk has a lot of power over the board.

“He takes care of Tesla as if it’s his own, but he’s not the main owner even though he calls himself the ‘Techno-king of Tesla’,” Professor Quinn explained.

Mr Musk is worried about Tesla’s investments in artificial intelligence technology.

“I don’t feel good about making Tesla a leader in AI and robotics unless I have 25% of the voting power,” he said on social media.

He said the way Tesla’s shareholders are now can make it easy for someone not trustworthy to take over the company, and he wants more say in where it’s heading.

Mr Musk said he would rather make products somewhere else if that’s not true.

  • Lula of Brazil fires deputy chief of intelligence amid spying investigation

Lula of Brazil fires deputy chief of intelligence amid spying investigation

Brazil’s President Lula fired the second-in-command of the national intelligence agency and four other leaders.

Authorities are still looking into allegations that the agency, Abin, spied on people who were against the ex-president Jair Bolsonaro.

Alessandro Moretti, a deputy, is accused of giving information to a former boss of Abin named Alexandre Ramagem, who is also a member of the same party as Mr.

Mr Bolsonaro says he and his family are being unfairly treated.

Lula said his government doesn’t tell the federal police what to do.

The scandal started on Thursday when Brazil’s highest court released documents accusing Abin of secretly watching important political and legal figures who spoke out against the former president.

Three Supreme Court judges and a speaker of Brazil’s lower house of Congress were reportedly being spied on illegally.

Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said that the police found evidence that Mr. Bolsonaro’s son Carlos was involved in ordering illegal spying as part of a political group.

The judge allowed police to search Carlos’ home and offices on Monday. Carlos is a city councillor in Rio de Janeiro.

Carlos Bolsonaro’s lawyer did not answer right away when the Associated Press asked for a comment.

Last week, the police looked for evidence in Mr. Ramagem’s office and house. He says he didn’t do anything wrong. This is according to Reuters news agency.

The police think Abin was using a software called FirstMile from Israel to secretly watch people’s mobile phones.

Experienced leftist Lula barely won against Mr. Bolsonaro, a very conservative politician, in a tense presidential election on 30 October 2022.

This new investigation adds to the legal troubles of Mr Bolsonaro, who has been banned from running for office for eight years after questioning Brazil’s electronic voting system without evidence.

  • Former Pakistani PM Bushra Bibi and his wife imprisoned due to corruption

Former Pakistani PM Bushra Bibi and his wife imprisoned due to corruption

Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 14 years in prison, which is the second sentence given to the former prime minister of Pakistan in two days.

The two sentences were said a week before the South Asian country’s election, where he cannot run for office.

Khan was removed as Prime Minister in 2022 and is now in jail for three years for being corrupt.

He believes that the many lawsuits against him are because of politics.

On Wednesday, he was in court for getting presents from the state while he was in charge, and his wife got them too. On Tuesday, he was in court for sharing secret government papers and got 10 years in prison. It is believed that the two sentences will happen at the same time, but it hasn’t been confirmed yet.

The court told the couple to pay a 1. 5 billion rupee fine (which is about 4. 2 million pounds or 5. 3 million dollars)

Khan’s PTI party said that their leader is banned from doing political work for 10 years. He also can’t hold a public office.

Khan’s lawyers said they will ask Pakistan’s High Court to review both cases.

The ex-prime minister and cricket player has been in jail since August when he was arrested. He has been in Adiala jail in Rawalpindi for most of the time.

His wife Bushra Bibi, who had been released from custody, turned herself in at the jail on Wednesday. She usually stayed out of the public eye while they were in office. They got married in 2018, a few months before Khan became prime minister.

Both of them said they didn’t do what Pakistan’s anti-corruption group said they did. They denied selling or keeping state gifts for their own gain. The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia gave a jewellery set as a gift.

The PTI says the cases against Khan are fake. They think the trials happened in unfair courts where things happened too quickly. The case on Wednesday was called a “sad day in our judicial system history” and the judiciary is being “dismantled”.

“You cannot ask any more questions, no final arguments can be made, and the decision seems to have already been made,” it claimed.

Khan’s lawyers also said he didn’t have a chance to defend himself in a trial that went faster than they thought it would. The judge said the decisions when Khan, Bibi, and their lawyers were not in the room, according to reporters.

At the same time, Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, said to the media outside Adiala jail that they were not sure what time the case was supposed to begin.

Khan has not said anything about the decision on Wednesday. The decision came after a judge found him guilty of sharing a secret document and hurting relationships between countries. Khan told his supporters to vote on February 8 and seek revenge for any wrongs in a peaceful way. He said this in a message on his social media account.

Even before the sentences were given, people were already doubting if the election next Thursday can be trusted because Khan and his party have been ignored a lot.

The government says they didn’t crackdown on PTI, but many of its leaders are in jail or have left the party. The people running for election are not part of any political party and a lot of them are actively campaigning.

Many of the party’s followers were arrested after protests, some of which turned violent, when Khan was taken into police custody last May.

The party no longer has the cricket bat symbol, which is important for voters who can’t read well to know where to mark their vote.

The person expected to win is Nawaz Sharif, who used to be the prime minister three times before. He came back from living outside his country in the fall. He caused a lot of trouble for the military during his long career and was put in jail for doing bad things before the 2018 election that Imran Khan won.

Many people think that the Pakistan military likes someone else more now, instead of Khan, who they used to like.

  • Kataib Hezbollah: Iran-supported group halt attack on US after drone strike

Kataib Hezbollah: Iran-supported group halt attack on US after drone strike

A group from Iraq that is supported by Iran and is suspected of attacking with a drone in Jordan and killing three US soldiers, has stopped fighting against US forces.

Kataib Hezbollah, a group that is part of a larger organization, said they attacked to stop the Iraqi government from feeling ashamed.

The US defense department said: “Actions are more important than just saying things. ”

US President Joe Biden said he has a plan to respond to the attack, but he didn’t explain what it is.

Iran said it would fight back if anyone attacks what they care about.

Before, it said it did not do the attack that the US and Britain accused it of doing.

The US has suggested that they might use force in different stages.

Kataib Hezbollah leader Abu Hussein al-Hamidawi said on Tuesday that they will stop attacking the occupation forces to avoid causing problems for the Iraqi government. However, they will still support the people in Gaza in different ways.

Three American soldiers were killed at a base near the border between Jordan and Syria by a type of Shahed drone. The drones were given to Russia by Iran and are designed for one-way attacks. This information was shared by a US official with CBS News, the BBC’s partner in the United States.

Many soldiers were hurt in the attack on Tower 22 while US forces were sleeping.

The US says Iran-backed groups are responsible, but they’re not sure if Kataib Hezbollah did it.

A Pentagon spokeswoman said it showed signs of the group’s involvement.

“Pat Ryder told reporters that what people do is more important than what they say, after the group put out their statement. ”

“He said there will be bad results. ”

At the same time, the US is making Tower 22 more secure. Around 350 US soldiers are there to fight against the Islamic State (IS) group.

More air defences are being sent to the base, a US official told CBS News on Tuesday. This includes a system made to stop drones.

What can the US do in response to the attack in Jordan.

“Iran is responsible for the attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement against ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden,” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner told media.

“He said we need to reply in a way that shows we’re not just going to keep defending. ”

He said that the US response will make Iran realize that the conflict will affect them directly.

MrBiden is thinking about different ways to get back at Iran, like attacking militia bases and leaders.

The US might also attack top leaders of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) in Iraq or Syria.

The US might also attack inside Iran. This would be the most serious action Mr. Biden could take.

In New York, the person representing Iran at the UN said that Iran will strongly react if attacked, no matter the reason. Iran’s news agency Irna reported this.

He also said that there were no messages sent between the US and Iran through other people in the last two days.

Iran has created a big group of friends who have weapons and help them in different countries in the Middle East. They all don’t like Israel and the US, and they call themselves the “Axis of Resistance”. But it’s not clear how much control Iran has over them.

The US says the IRGC and its Quds Force control co-ordination. The US calls both of them terrorist groups, also some other regional armed groups like Kataib Hezbollah.

The groups have increased their attacks on Israel, US forces, and other related targets since the war between Israel and Hamas began in Gaza in October. They say they are doing this to show support for the Palestinian people.

A lot of drone, rocket, and missile attacks have happened at US bases in Iraq and Syria since October 17. A group of Iran-backed militias called the Islamic Resistance in Iraq has claimed responsibility for many of these attacks.

The US attacked groups associated with the IRGC, including Kataib Hezbollah, Harakat al-Nujaba and Asaib Ahl al-Haq.

The attack on Sunday was the first time US troops were killed in the region since the Gaza war started, and the Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for it.

Last month, the US bombed groups connected to Iran after three US soldiers were hurt in a drone attack on a base in northern Iraq. One soldier was hurt badly.

In January, a US attack in Baghdad took out a leader of Harakat al-Nujaba who was blamed for attacking US people.

Last week, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said that the attacks on three buildings in Iraq owned by Kataib Hezbollah and other groups were a direct response to a series of escalating attacks on US and other international forces in Iraq and Syria.

  • United States of America threatens to reinstate oil sanctions against Venezuela

United States of America threatens to reinstate oil sanctions against Venezuela

The US is warning that it will put sanctions back on Venezuela‘s oil industry. This is happening after Venezuela’s highest court decided to keep a ban on opposition candidate María Corina Machado.

Ms Machado won an important election to become the main candidate for the opposition party in the 2024 presidential election.

However, on Friday, Venezuela’s highest court decided that Ms Machado is not allowed to run for public office for 15 years.

The oil industry is very important for Venezuela’s economy.

The US put limits on Venezuela’s oil business after President Nicolás Maduro began his second term in 2019. Many people didn’t think the election was fair.

The US made the sanctions less strict in October after the Maduro government and the opposition agreed to work together. This agreement is a step towards having fair and free presidential elections in the second half of 2024.

Not long after the agreement was made in Barbados, the US Treasury gave permission for a short time to do business with Venezuela’s oil and gas industry.

But it said that Venezuela needed to keep its promises about the elections in order to renew the license. This included allowing María Corina Machado and other opposition candidates to participate.

The oil exception will end on April 18th. The US said it won’t renew it unless the government and the opposition in Venezuela make political progress, especially by allowing all candidates to run in the upcoming election.

The US said it would put sanctions back on Venezuela’s state-owned gold mining company, which helps the Maduro government get foreign money.

Ms Machado won the opposition’s primary in October by getting more than 90% of the votes. This has given hope to Venezuelans who want a new government that she could become president – if the election is fair.

As part of the Barbados agreement, the Maduro government agreed to let people from other countries watch the election.

The Supreme Court, controlled by Maduro supporters, decided to keep Ms Machado banned. This has led many people, including Ms Machado herself, to believe that the Barbados deal is no longer going to happen.

Ms Machado promised to stay strong and said she was given a job in the primary that she will do. She said “We will win and they will lose. ” They can’t have an election without me.

Jorge Rodríguez, a friend of Mr. Maduro, who spoke for the government in the Barbados discussions, said that the government did what it promised. He said, “Those who wanted to appeal appealed and also promised to accept the decision. “

  • 15-Year prison sentence looms for US-based Ghanaian Lawyer in immigration fraud case

15-Year prison sentence looms for US-based Ghanaian Lawyer in immigration fraud case

A Ghanaian immigration lawyer based in New York, Kofi Amankwaa, is now at the center of a legal storm facing allegations of defrauding thousands of Ghanaians living in America seeking green cards.

The charges involve causing financial loss to the American state, orchestrating deportations for some immigrants, and denying green card applications through an illegal scheme, with hundreds falling victim.

According to reports from the New York Post, Amankwaa, along with his associates, including his son Kofi Amankwaa Jnr, Sylvester Boateng, Nana Adoma Kontoh, and Betty Smith, is accused of charging immigrants $6000 each, promising to secure green cards for them.

The illegal scheme is also alleged to exploit the Violence Against Women Act by falsely instructing clients to claim they are victims of domestic abuse, facilitating their bid for legal residency in the U.S. In some instances, Amankwaa is said to have asked clients to falsely report abuse of their children to expedite immigration applications.

The New York State Attorney, Letitia James, is seeking a maximum 15-year jail term for the accused, emphasizing that Amankwaa and his associates ran an illegal scheme that scammed hundreds of vulnerable immigrants. James stated, “When these immigrants sought help from attorneys claiming to act in their interests, they were taken advantage of and harmed instead. This cruel and illegal scheme led to them being separated from their families and deported.”

Amankwaa and his son were arraigned before the federal court on January 22, charged with conspiracy to commit immigration fraud and committing immigration fraud. Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, remarked that the father and son team “sought to make a mockery of the US immigration system” and allegedly exploited the Violence Against Women Act for financial gain.

New York lawmaker Catalina Cruz Esq, who reported the case, stated that Amankwa’s scheme resulted in the deportation of families and denied them the American dream. In the lawsuit, the State Attorney seeks to halt the defendants’ illegal activities, along with restitution and damages for affected persons, and civil penalties to the state.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has also filed a parallel criminal action against Mr. Amankwaa and his son, charging them with a large-scale immigration fraud scheme.

Vladimir Kara-Murza: Russia activist fears covert jail modification

A lawyer for Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian who opposes the government, says he has been taken to a different prison in Siberia’s Omsk region.

Worry about his safety had increased after the Russian-British man, who was found guilty of treason for speaking out against the war in Ukraine, disappeared from prison.

Transferring prisoners in Russia is kept a secret and can take a long time.

Previously, the UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron asked for clear information about where Mr Kara-Murza is.

First, people asked the prison in Omsk where he was kept, and they said he was not there anymore.

On Tuesday, his lawyers said he was moved to a new prison in the same area, according to the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta Europe.

In a letter to his lawyers, Mr Kara-Murza said he was moved as a punishment for not getting up when a guard told him to stand.

He said the guards thought that this was a mean breaking of prison rules.

“I’m goodI have clothes, shoes, food, and warmth. The people here are doing well too,” he said.

Mr Kara-Murza said he was put in a small room by himself and was told he might be moved after four months.

The wife of the activist, Evgenia Kara-Murza, shared the letter on Tuesday.

“I am very worried about Mr. Kara-Murza, who is a British citizen being held in Russia for speaking out against the invasion of Ukraine,” Lord Cameron wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) on January 29th.

Mrs Kara-Murza found out on Monday that he has been taken from a punishment cell to somewhere else in the penal colony where he has been held since September 2023.

“He doesn’t have a reason to be moved, and that is very scary because the people who tried to kill him in 2015 and 2017 are the ones who have him now,” she said, talking about two times when he almost died after being poisoned.

The British foreign secretary said, “I support his wife. ”

Mr Kara-Murza got 25 years in jail in April for sharing wrong information about the Russian army and being part of a group that the government doesn’t like.

The person who used to be a journalist and a politician, and is now 42 years old, said that the accusations against him are not true.

For many years, he has been speaking against Russian President Vladimir Putin and has criticized the government’s actions against people who disagree with them, as well as the war in Ukraine.

He also helped convince Western governments to punish Russian officials for treating people unfairly and being dishonest.

Just before he was punished, he said online: “I believe that one day our country will become better. ”

The UK government didn’t like what he said, so they asked Russia’s ambassador to come in for a talk. They also said they would take action against the people who were responsible for his arrest and treatment.

The US state department said that Mr Kara-Murza is another person targeted by the Russian government’s increasing campaign of repression.

Mr Kara-Murza’s family was well-known for speaking out against the Soviet government. He got British citizenship when he moved to the UK as a teenager with his mother.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who has been in jail since 2021 for reasons many people think are politically based, was moved to a different part of the prison in December. During this time, he was unable to communicate with his supporters for almost three weeks.

  • Republicans want Homeland Secretary removed from office

Republicans want Homeland Secretary removed from office

Republicans are getting closer to impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas because they don’t like how he’s dealing with the US-Mexico border.

Critics of the Biden administration say that Mr. Mayorkas didn’t do his job properly, which caused a lot of migrants to come into the country.

If the plan happens, Mr. Mayorkas will be the first cabinet secretary to be impeached since 1876.

Over 63 million people have come to the US without permission since 2021.

On Tuesday, the Republican-led House Committee on Homeland Security gathered to work on articles of impeachment against Mr. This is an important step before the whole House of Representatives can vote on the bill.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mark Green, who is in charge of the committee and is a Republican from Tennessee, said that Mr. Mayorkas did not do his job properly in securing the US-Mexico border.

“He didn’t follow the laws made by Congress on purpose, and broke their trust and the trust of the American people,” he said. The results have been really bad, and have put the lives and jobs of all Americans at risk.

Mr Mayorkas, who was not at the meeting, responded to the accusations.

In a seven-page letter published on the same day, he said that untrue accusations don’t scare him and explained the actions the Biden administration is taking to make sure US laws are followed at the border.

Bennie Thompson, a top Democrat on the committee, said that the Republicans are just trying things randomly and doing a fake impeachment for political reasons.

If the Republican-controlled House of Representatives accuses Mr Mayorkas, he would be the first high-ranking government official to go through the process since 1876. This was when Secretary of War William Balknap was accused for his involvement in a kickback scheme. He was found not guilty by the Senate.

Even if the House says he did something wrong, Mr. Mayorkas probably won’t be found guilty by the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats.

The decision to impeach Mr. Mayorkas is causing a lot of talk because many people are worried about the way the US is dealing with immigration and the southern border.

In January, a survey by CBS found that almost half of Americans see the border situation as a big problem, and 63% think the government should make stricter rules.

Refund GHS32,620 with interest – PAC directs CAGD Western Regional Director

The Western Regional Director of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has been directed by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament to refund GHS32,620 with interest to the state.

This directive comes as a result of his failure to rectify an inadvertent overpayment of pension gratuity to a retired fire officer, Station Officer 1 Elijah Ankrah, in 2017.

Ankrah, who voluntarily retired, received GHS66,337 instead of the correct GHS33,716. The oversight was brought to light during the PAC’s public hearing on Monday, January 29, 2024, where they were reviewing the Auditor-General’s report on the Public Accounts of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for the year concluding on December 31, 2022.

The auditors’ recommendation, encapsulated in paragraph 113 of the report, urged the Controller and Accountant General to ensure the retrieval of the overpaid amount, along with interest at the Bank of Ghana’s prevailing rates, from Mr Elijah Ankrah.

Failure to secure repayment from Ankrah would necessitate the amount being recovered from the regional director.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the regional director’s inability to recover the funds from Mr Elijah Ankrah, Chairman Avedzi stated: “So, this committee is upholding the recommendation of the Auditor General.”

The PAC’s proceedings, initiated on January 29, are scheduled to conclude on Friday, February 23, 2024. This directive emphasizes the committee’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and adherence to financial protocols within governmental entities, ensuring accountability in the management of public funds.

  • EC advances Constitutional procedures enabling November elections

EC advances Constitutional procedures enabling November elections

Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed that over 50 percent of political parties have given their nod to the proposal for holding this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections in November, as opposed to the usual December schedule.

During an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Monday, January 29, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and some other political parties, including those opposing the change, expressed reservations about the proposed time frame. The NDC, particularly, raised concerns about the feasibility of organizing a smooth election within the suggested schedule.

While the NDC opposed the proposal, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has not yet made a final decision on the matter.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Director of Elections and ICT for the NDC, urged caution on the part of the EC. He emphasized that considering the extensive tasks that the EC needs to accomplish between now and the upcoming elections, taking on the proposed schedule might overwhelm the commission.

“As an institution, if it wanted to add the needed parliamentary processes to change the date for the elections, it’s something that we all discussed, and we are all men and women of faith. So we take issues of religion seriously, and we felt that it’s something that should be subjected to a broader national discussion so that all shades of opinion can be factored into it for the appropriate decision to be taken.

“And with all that said, for the election day being a holiday, we felt it is not really necessary but if others think it must be done, even though we have too many holidays in the year, if others feel it must be done, it can be considered,” he said.

Mr. Boamah urged the EC to stick to the current date for the general elections, emphasising that the EC could have pushed these reforms in the previous years and not in an election year.

Speaking in an interview, the Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Bossman Asare stated that this new timeline will allow the election management body to easily mobilise for a runoff in case the polls end this year with no clear winner in the first round of elections.

According to him, based on what transpired at the IPAC meeting on Monday, the majority of the political parties were supportive of the change of the dates from December to November and expressed their view that if it would be possible for the EC to be able to implement it this year, that will be good.

Dr. Asare, however, stated that most of the parties suggested that if the EC is unable to implement the process this year, then it should begin in 2028.

“So in principle, all the parties that attended IPAC yesterday were for it for 2028. But for 2024, almost about 60% of the parties, more than half of the parties, said if it will be possible for the EC to go through the legal processes to have it implemented this year, let’s go ahead,” he said.

Reacting to whether the EC would be able to come through on all the legal requirements and changes to be able to hold the elections in November, the EC Deputy Chairman said “Yes, very much so. Looking at our calendar, we are pretty sure that we will be able to do everything, whatever it takes to ensure that we go through the legal process.”

He clarified that the EC is not the final determinant, but the implementation has to go through the Attorney General, to the parliamentary system before it will be approved.

“But as I said, as far as we are concerned, whatever we need to do, whatever is necessary, whatever is proper that must be done to ensure that we are able to consummate it and have the elections, we are well able to do that,” Dr Asare said.

  • Special Prosecutor advocates for Anti-Corruption Courts amid stagnant CPI

Special Prosecutor advocates for Anti-Corruption Courts amid stagnant CPI

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has called for the establishment of anti-corruption courts in Ghana to prosecute individuals suspected of engaging in corruption and related offenses.

Agyebeng expressed his disappointment with Ghana’s corruption score of 43 in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2023, emphasizing the need for more effective measures to combat corruption.

Speaking at a roundtable discussion on the 2023 CPI, Agyebeng characterized the fight against corruption as an “unruly bread” and highlighted the challenges hindering significant progress in addressing corruption issues. Ghana has maintained a corruption score of 43 since 2020, ranking 70th out of 180 countries and territories included in the CPI.

“The conversation is becoming sterile. The fight against corruption is proving to be an unruly bread indeed and the fight against corruption is not lending herself to agreeable investigation and cohabitation and we are not recording much success, our progress is hampered and we’re unable to move the needle appreciably to improve our scorecard,” he said.

Ghana’s stagnant anti-corruption efforts over the past four years, as indicated by the CPI, align with a global trend of deteriorating justice systems, reducing accountability for public officials and allowing corruption to persist. Transparency International also noted a decline in Ghana’s Rule of Law Index, emphasizing the need for comprehensive reforms.

Ghana scored 43 out of a clean score of 100 and ranked 70th out of 180 countries and territories included in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2023, released today, January 30, 2024 by Transparency International (TI).

This marks the fourth consecutive year of stagnation in Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts, as indicated by the CPI.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana came 8th out of 49 countries.

According to Transparency International, Ghana’s stagnated score highlights a global trend of deteriorating justice systems which is reducing the accountability of public officials and therefore allowing corruption to thrive.

“The connection is reinforced by Ghana’s performance in the Rule of Law Index produced by the World Justice Project which demonstrates a concerning decline. In the 2015 Rule of Law Index, Ghana scored 0.60 and ranked 34, but by 2023, Ghana’s score had decreased to 0.55, with a corresponding drop in ranking to 61,” it stated.

Reacting to the report, the Special Prosecutor made some demands, including the entrenchment of anti-corruption law enforcement institutions and the establishment of the special anti-corruption courts to swiftly and efficiently deal with corruption cases.

“May we assure the entrenchment of anti-corruption law enforcement institutions in addition to the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice; may we write anti-corruption law enforcement institutions into the constitution especially the flagship office of the special prosecutor; may we enlarge the powers and mandate of anti-corruption law enforcement institutions; may we insulate anti-corruption law enforcement institutions from political marginalization.

“May we include the office of the special prosecutor in the membership of the judicial council; may we assure anti-corruption law enforcement institutions the flow of adequate resources; may we assure in actual practice the independence of the judiciary; may we assure that judges will adjudicate with boldness without fear of reprisals.

“May we assure that judges will adjudicate without fear of compromising their promotion and advancement; may we set up a specialized anti-corruption court manned by specially trained judges in the field to swiftly and efficiently deal with corruption cases; and may we remunerate judges and officers of anti-corruption law enforcement institutions adequately, they are human after all, hunger and squalor begets a natural urge to cut a corner or two or three till it becomes habitual and a culture,” he said.

Louis Vuitton CEO ‘beats’ Elon Musk to become World’s richest person

Billionaire chairman and CEO of LVMH (Louis Vuitton), Bernard Arnault, has claimed the title of the world’s richest person, surpassing Elon Musk, according to Forbes.

The Arnault family’s net worth reached $207.8 billion, marking a significant increase of $23.6 billion, while Musk’s net worth declined to $204.5 billion, experiencing a decrease of over $18 billion.

Born in 1949 in Roubaix, France, Arnault, an engineering graduate from the École Polytechnique in Paris, embarked on a business career. In 1984, he acquired the struggling luxury goods brand Christian Dior and, under his leadership, transformed it into a global powerhouse. Arnault expanded the business by incorporating additional luxury brands such as Hennessy, Louis Vuitton, and Moët & Chandon. The merger of Christian Dior and Moët Hennessy in 1987 resulted in the creation of LVMH, the world’s largest luxury goods corporation.

As of the Forbes Real-Time Billionaire List, Arnault and his family were valued at $207.6 billion on Sunday, with Musk trailing at $204.7 billion. The top five on the list also included Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Larry Ellison.

However, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index presents a different perspective, asserting that Musk remains the world’s richest person, with a fortune of $199 billion. Musk, known for owning companies like SpaceX, Tesla, and X (previously Twitter), maintains a lead over Jeff Bezos ($184 billion) and Arnault ($183 billion).

The dynamics of the ranking highlight the fluctuating fortunes of the world’s wealthiest individuals, influenced by stock market movements, business developments, and other factors. The ongoing competition for the title of the richest person adds a layer of intrigue to the financial landscape, capturing the attention of global observers.

  • Nations charged to tackle NTDs as a development issue

Nations charged to tackle NTDs as a development issue

Director in charge of the Global Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Programme at the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Ibrahima Socé Fall, has emphasized the need for nations grappling with NTDs to address the diseases as a developmental issue.

Dr. Fall contends that NTDs are directly linked to development problems, primarily affecting vulnerable populations living in impoverished conditions with limited access to clean water and sanitation facilities.

NTDs encompass a diverse group of conditions caused by various pathogens, leading to severe health, social, and economic consequences. These diseases predominantly afflict impoverished communities in tropical areas, impacting over one billion people, with 1.6 billion requiring interventions, both preventive and curative. Some examples of NTDs include Buruli ulcer, dengue, Guinea-worm disease, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, rabies, schistosomiasis, and yaws.

In an interview facilitated by Speak Up Africa, Dr. Socé Fall expressed concern that NTDs have historically been overlooked in terms of diagnosis and treatment due to their disproportionate impact on developing countries. He highlighted the global community’s lack of significant investment in eliminating NTDs, attributing it to their limited effect on developed nations’ healthcare systems.

Dr Socé Fall drew parallels with global responses to diseases like COVID-19 and Ebola, emphasizing that diseases primarily affecting poorer populations in developing countries receive less attention until they pose a threat to more affluent nations. He underscored the need for increased funding and investment in NTD interventions and called on world leaders to prioritize these diseases to eliminate them effectively.

The WHO expert urged countries grappling with NTDs to take charge of their own diagnosis and treatment efforts by demonstrating leadership and political will. He emphasized that addressing NTDs is essential for achieving meaningful milestones in socio-economic development.

Dr. Socé Fall outlined key actions required to combat NTDs, including improving healthcare infrastructure, securing more funding for medication development, and creating resilient healthcare systems. He emphasized the importance of advocacy, political commitment, and community engagement in raising awareness about NTDs and implementing effective interventions.

Commending countries for their efforts in controlling NTDs, Dr. Socé Fall highlighted ongoing progress and expressed optimism that, by 2030, at least 100 countries will eliminate one NTD. He acknowledged the critical role of partnerships and called for continued investment in NTDs to achieve global health coverage and ensure that no community is left behind.

The “No to NTD Movement,” launched to combat NTDs in Africa, plays a crucial role in increasing awareness, prioritization, and national commitment to accelerating the control and elimination of NTDs on the continent. The movement engages with governments, the private sector, youth movements, and civil society, fostering efficient domestic resources and strengthening the capacities of national NTD programs and civil society organizations for sustainable strategies.

  • Video: Ghanaian midwife who survived throat cancer speaks

A dedicated Ghanaian midwife, Madam Mary Amankwah Fordwor, has defied the odds and emerged victorious against advanced-stage throat cancer.

Diagnosed in 2021, Madam Amankwah has successfully undergone surgery, marking another significant step in her battle against throat cancer.

The surgery, however, has left her with a unique challenge – breathing through her neck due to the absence of a connection to her nose.

While she is sometimes able to ingest food, she relies on a feeding tube when her throat closes.

In a video making rounds on Social Media, Mary Amankwah Fordwor generously shared insights from her experiences, as well as offering valuable perspectives on the risk factors associated with throat cancer.

She indicated that there has not been any identified cause of throat cancer, however, risk factors of the disease include, smoking, drinking alcohol, oral sex, etc.

Throat cancer, according to clevelandclinic.org is the general term for cancer that affects one or more parts of your throat. Usually, people who have throat cancer have cancer in their larynx (voice box) or their oropharynx (the middle part of their throat.) Healthcare providers typically use surgery to treat throat cancer.

While addressing viewers on social media, she entreated them to take good care of themselves and stay aware from things that can expose them to the disease.

Wine calls for ‘moral revolt’ against Museveni in Uganda

Bobi Wine, the leader of the opposition in Uganda, has asked people to disobey the government and to protest against President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in charge for 38 years.

During an interview with France 24, he said he was scared for his life because the government wanted to get rid of anyone who opposed them.

A movie about Bobi Wine running for president in 2021 is up for an Academy award at this year’s Oscars.

His party, the National Unity Platform, went to court in Kampala on Tuesday to ask the security agencies to let go 18 of its supporters who have been missing since the trouble during the 2021 election campaign.

  • US will respond to attack on Jordan – Biden

US will respond to attack on Jordan – Biden

President Joe Biden has said that he knows how the US will react to a drone attack that killed three American soldiers in Jordan last weekend.

As he was leaving the White House to go to fundraisers in Florida, Mr. Biden said, “I don’t think we should have a bigger war in the Middle East. ”

A group supported by Iran has said they did the attack at a US military base.

Many more people got hurt in the attack on Sunday near the border of Syria.

Mr Biden didn’t say exactly what the United States will do, but the White House promised a strong reaction on Monday.

This was the first time US soldiers were killed by the enemy in that area since the Israel Gaza war started on October 7th.

Iran said they did not do the attack.

But on Tuesday morning, Mr. Biden said, “I do blame Iran because they are giving weapons to the people who did it. ”

The attack happened at night on a US military base called Tower 22 in northeastern Jordan.

Around 350 US soldiers are located at the base. Their main goal is to help the coalition in fighting against the Islamic State. This information comes from US Central Command.

The enemy’s drone attacked when an American drone was coming back to base after a mission.

Officials say the base’s automatic air defense system was turned off to avoid shooting down the US drone.

However, because of that, the troops who were still in their beds were not given a warning.

Lately, some groups from Iran have been attacking US bases in the Middle East.

President Biden can choose to respond to the attack by making strikes on bases and commanders in Iran that are allied with the attackers.

The US might also go after top leaders of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard in Iraq or Syria. But this could make the conflict worse.

  • Imran Khan: Pakistan’s former prime minister arrested in state secrets case

Imran Khan: Pakistan’s former prime minister arrested in state secrets case

Ex-Pakistani leader Imran Khan got a 10-year jail term for sharing government secrets.

Khan, who was removed as the Prime Minister in 2022, is currently in jail for three years because he was found guilty of being corrupt.

He said that all the accusations against him were done to hurt him in politics.

He was found guilty under the secrets act just before the elections, and he is not allowed to run for office.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who used to be a foreign minister, and is now the vice-chairman of Imran Khan’s PTI party, was given a 10-year prison sentence by a special court in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where both men are currently held.

The cipher case is about the suspected sharing of secret letters from Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington to the government in Islamabad while Khan was prime minister.

It’s about when he showed up at a big meeting in March 2022, just before he was kicked out of his job as leader in a vote by the parliament. Imran Khan came on stage and showed a paper, claiming it proved that there was a plan from another country to harm him.

He said very clearly that “everything will be forgiven if Imran Khan is no longer in charge”. He didn’t say which country it was, but he had a lot of bad things to say about the United States.

The prosecutor said that the ex-Prime Minister leaked a secret document and harmed relationships with other countries. The second accusation can result in life in prison or even being sentenced to death.

Imran Khan has been in Adiala jail most of the time since he was arrested in August. Foreign reporters were not allowed to go to the court hearings that have been happening for the past few months.

The news said that the judge was asked to speed up the trial. A PTI representative said they will fight the court decision and said it was a joke.

“We don’t agree with this bad choice,” said Naeem Panjutha, a lawyer for the ex-prime minister who has many legal cases. He posted this on X (formerly Twitter).

Another person who works for Khan told the Reuters news agency that his lawyers didn’t get to help him or question the people giving evidence.

The election on 8 February is late, and some people say the PTI party is not getting a fair chance to campaign.

The government says they didn’t attack the PTI, but lots of its leaders are in jail or have left the party. Its candidates have to run for election as independents and some are hiding.

The police arrested many of its supporters after there were protests, some of which were violent, last May when Imran Khan was first taken into custody.

The party cannot use the cricket bat symbol anymore. This symbol is important in a country where many people can’t read, so voters can use it to mark their ballots.

Many are doubting if next Thursday’s vote is fair, because Imran Khan, who is still one of Pakistan’s most popular politicians, and his party have been ignored.

The man expected to win is Nawaz Sharif, who has been Prime Minister three times before and came back from living outside the country. For a long time, he caused problems for the powerful military. He was put in jail for being dishonest before the 2018 election that Imran Khan won.

Now things are different. Nawaz Sharif’s legal problems have disappeared, which makes many people think that the government supports him now. At the same time, his opponent, who was once liked by the military, is not liked anymore.

  • Anthony Oxley: Army officer’s death was supported by police

Anthony Oxley: Army officer’s death was supported by police

A soldier in the US military caused a deadly car accident with an Army officer on an air force base, but he wasn’t charged because the American authorities handled the investigation.

Sergeant Anthony Oxley, who was 40 years old, passed away at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus in June 2016.

Since he died, his wife has been working to make sure people know how it happened.

Sally Oxley said she was very sad after finding out last weekend from a report by a coroner that the police had suggested that the driver should be charged with a crime.

The BBC asked the US Air Force to share their thoughts.

Colour Sgt Oxley, from Ryhill, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, was riding a motorbike and got into a crash with a Toyota Corolla driven by a US serviceman. He passed away at the hospital afterwards.

In 2018, a UK investigation found that the officer died from multiple head injuries.

Mrs Oxley said she wanted a new investigation because someone who works for the SBA Police approached her in a car park and asked for it. The SBA Police is the civilian police force for Akrotiri and Dhekelia, which are areas controlled by the British government.

The report showed the name of the US soldier who was in the crash for the first time. The SBA Police suggested criminal charges against him before the US Air Force started the investigation.

The coroner said that the leader of the British Bases in Akrotiri, Michalis Vasiliou, found enough proof in his report in 2017 to charge the American for causing death through reckless or dangerous behavior.

The report said that people who saw it said the driver of the car turned sharply to the right without using the turn signal.

The coroner said that no one was charged with a crime because the person involved was a soldier in the American Air Force, and the American authorities were handling the investigation.

“In his report, he showed that he disagrees with many of the findings in the American report. ”

The investigator said: “There is evidence that suggests other people’s actions or decisions might have caused the person to die. ”

Mrs Oxley, from Barnsley, said: “I haven’t slept much this weekend. ” “These are the things that we have not been told,” she said.

“It’s difficult to handle, but I just have to move forward. ”

Mrs Oxley’s lawyers have now sent a letter to the UK Attorney General asking for a new investigation because of what the coroner found.

She also wanted the top lawyer in Cyprus to start a new investigation into the crash.

Mrs Oxley said, “I feel hopeful and I don’t think I can change my mind now. ” They will have to take action to fix it.

Ethiopian government acknowledges fatalities from famine

Nearly 400 people have died in Ethiopia’s Tigray and Amhara regions because of lack of food caused by drought, the government’s Federal Ombudsman Institute reported on Tuesday.

The comments go against what federal authorities said before, that they didn’t have confirmation of anyone dying from not having enough food in any part of the country.

People had died in different areas, but there wasn’t a complete record of all the deaths.

The institute found that millions of people were affected in the two areas and tens of thousands had already been forced to leave their homes.

The boss of the institute, Endale Haile, told the media that the deaths happened in the last six months.

In December, leaders in the war-torn Tigray region said a severe food shortage, like the one Ethiopia had in the 1980s, could happen soon if we don’t act fast.

The government said there is not going to be a famine in Ethiopia, but they recognized that a lack of rain is causing problems in some parts of the country.

The Ombudsman Institute is telling government agencies to not waste time on words and instead focus on helping people.

The government said last week that they found over six million people who need urgent help because of a drought in the next three months.

Niger’s leaders kicked out 15 people from the European Union‘s mission to help them improve.

The Interior Minister of the country, Brig Gen Mohamed Toumba, said that the people came back to Niamey on different flights on January 24th without telling the government.

He said they were forced to leave Niger a few days later on 26 January.

Niger has been controlled by a group of military leaders since July when they took over from the elected President Mohamed Bazoum. Shortly after that, the EU said they would punish the leaders of the junta with sanctions.

Niger says that the Eucap mission, which included 120 security officers helping Niger’s forces, ended in December after more than ten years of working together.

The junta wants to have less connections with European countries and wants to start having more connections with countries like Russia and Iran.

Niger has been saying things against the Western countries. People are now wondering what will happen to the US soldiers who are at a drone base in Agadez.

Reports surfaced on January 29, 2024, of the untimely death of Dr. Grace Boadu.

The circumstances surrounding her demise remain unclear, but an old video has emerged, featuring Dr Grace confessing to a harrowing experience involving suspected cocaine poisoning that spanned three years.

The video, recorded during a church testimony, captures Dr. Grace detailing a traumatic incident during an international trip.

According to her account, upon arrival, she was detained by officials at the airport due to suspicions that she carried cocaine.

Subsequently, she was rushed to the hospital, where she received the unsettling diagnosis that she had been unknowingly poisoned with cocaine over the course of three years. Shockingly, she was allegedly given a grim prognosis, stating that she had only three days to live.

The video shows her expressing gratitude to God for her survival during a church ceremony. However, the circumstances leading to her recent death remain uncertain, leaving many questions unanswered.

  • US imposes further sanctions on Venezuela

US imposes further sanctions on Venezuela

The United States has put back some punishments on Venezuela. This happened a few days after the top court in the South American country said no to the main person running against the current leader, María Corina Machado.

She won the primary election by a lot and now she is the main candidate for the opposition to run for president in 2024.

However, on Friday, Venezuela’s highest court agreed to prevent Ms. Machado from running for public office for 15 years.

MsMachado said she will keep running for president even though she was banned.

In October, the US made its sanctions on Venezuela less strict after President Nicolás Maduro’s government and the opposition agreed to hold fair elections in 2024.

As agreed, the Maduro government, which was re-elected in 2018 in an election that many people didn’t think was fair, said it would let other countries watch the next election.

The “Barbados deal” allows opposition candidates who were not allowed to run for office to now appeal against the bans. This agreement was made in Barbados, where both sides met.

In return, the US, which supported the Barbados agreement, reduced some of its punishments on Venezuela.

However, on Friday, the Supreme Court rejected the appeals filed by Ms Machado and another well-known opposition leader, Henrique Capriles. The court allowed some unknown politicians to participate again.

The US government said they were very worried about the decision to not let María Corina Machado participate.

It said it went against what Maduro and his representatives agreed to in the Barbados electoral roadmap. They promised to let all parties choose their candidates for the presidential election.

On Monday, the sanctions on Venezuela’s mining sector started again.

The US government said to American companies that they need to stop doing business with a Venezuelan mining company called Minerven by February 13th.

Minerven has been punished by the US before. In 2019, Ofac said Maduro and his government were using a gold mining company called Minerven to make themselves rich and hurt the people of Venezuela.

The US government put sanctions back on the mining industry, but hasn’t put them back on Venezuela’s oil industry yet. This shows that they are taking their time and may put more sanctions on later if they don’t like what’s happening.

John Kirby, a spokesperson for national security at the White House, said on Monday that the Maduro government has until “spring” to keep their promises. “They have to make choices before we decide what choices we will make. ”

Ms Machado promised that she will stay strong and stick to her beliefs. She said she was chosen in the primary election and she will do what she promised. She also said that she is confident they will win and their opponents should be ready to lose. “They can’t have elections unless I’m there. ”

Jorge Rodríguez, a friend of Mr. Maduro who spoke for the government at the talks in Barbados, said that the government did what it promised. He said, “Those who wanted to appeal did, and promised to accept the decision. “

  • Joyce Bawah rallies Ghanaians to combat Akufo-Addo’s mismanagement

Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah, has called on Ghanaians to express their outrage at what she describes as the mismanagement of the country by the current government.

Joyce Bawah is urging citizens to unite and join the fight for change, asserting that it is crucial to rescue the nation from what she perceives as a failed government.

“Ghanaians should be outraged at the mismanagement of the country and join the fight for change to rescue the nation from a failed government,” she said.

In a statement making the call, Bawah claimed that former President John Mahama has been a victim of extreme prejudice and political propaganda, orchestrated by individuals with the sole aim of obtaining the presidency at any cost.

The accusations against Mahama, particularly related to the Ford vehicle issue and the bus branding scandal, were highlighted as instances of corruption and graft used as political leverage to discredit the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leadership.

“We have been stating for years that John Mahama has been a victim of extreme prejudice and political propaganda led sadly by a man whose sole aim was to become president at all costs.

This he could only achieve by destroying his predecessor, a good man, a very patriotic Ghanaian, Nana Akufo-Addo, in the past touted as his friend and a good colleague on the other side of the political divide in parliament.

Recall the Ford vehicle issue and the accusations of corruption against Mr Mahama by the NPP. Let me also mention the bus branding ‘scandal’, which again led to serious accusations, mass mobilisation and condemnation by the NPP and then-candidate Akufo-Addo.

These are two significant examples of how corruption and graft were used as political leverage to justify the claim that the NDC and its leadership were incompetent and incapable of managing the country’s affairs,” she stated.

Bawah contends that the current administration, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, has yet to prove the allegations against Mahama, and she asserted that their actions suggest a comfort with corruption.

She further pointed to the ongoing galamsey crisis, exacerbated by the findings in Frimpong Boateng’s report, as evidence of the government’s involvement and lack of decisive action.

Drawing attention to the regrettable will of the late Sir John, Bawah questioned the current status of the matter and demanded answers from President Akufo-Addo.

“You may recall the regrettable will of the late Sir John, who left forest concessions, properties, and state lands to his family upon his passing. What is the current status of this matter? Why has the President yet to take action? We are eagerly waiting for the President’s response. Galamsey is still ongoing, causing damage to our water bodies,” she said.

Additionally, she highlighted the ongoing damage caused by galamsey activities to the nation’s water bodies and expressed concern over the president’s purported inaction.

Bawah further referenced the recent scandal involving Cecelia Dapaah, stating that the court ruling to return assets to the former government official reinforces accusations of corruption against President Akufo-Addo. She deemed the decision a travesty and criticized the government’s inability or lack of desire to vehemently fight corruption.

Let me also remind you of the recent scandal involving Cecelia Dapaah. This case has only reinforced the accusations of corruption against President Akufo-Addo.

“As every Ghanaian predicted, the case has ended. A court ruling has ordered that all the hard currency and amounts in the bank be returned to Cecilia Dapaah. This decision is a travesty that we are all struggling to understand. The amount of money involved pales in comparison to any alleged corruption claims or allegations under President Mahama.

“The OSP has ultimately truncated one of the biggest scandals of all time and an irrefutable opportunity for this Government to prove itself as one willing and able to deal with corruption,” she noted.

Concluding her statement, Joyce Bawah called on Ghanaians to be outraged by the perceived mismanagement of the country and actively participate in the fight for change.

“The inability or the desire to fight corruption vehemently has conferred on Akufo-Addo the title of a clearing agent. As he predicted, his ‘dear’ Cecilia Dapaah has been cleared, and what little integrity she has left will be for history to judge.

Mr Mahama was tough enough on corruption, and many instances confirm this. All the allegations of corruption during his first term were actuated by malice and by a trumpeted campaign carefully hatched by the NPP, particularly Akufo Addo and Bawumia, to taint and tarnish the unblemished character of President Mahama.

“Ghanaians should be outraged at the mismanagement of the country and join the fight for change to rescue the nation from a failed government,” she said.

Man detained by UK police for Rwandan genocide

Police in Gateshead arrested a man for investigating crimes like genocide and other serious crimes that happened in Rwanda 30 years ago.

The 69-year-old person was asked about the 1994 genocide, when 800,000 people were killed.

Experts from the Counter Terrorism Policing War Crimes Team helped Counter Terrorism Policing North East to make an arrest last Thursday.

Police said the man was let go on bail while they keep investigating.

The War Crimes team is a part of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command.

Commander Dominic Murphy said they are looking into very serious crimes, and anyone who did them should be punished, no matter where they are.

He said, “Getting proof to support a possible future trial is a difficult process that needs careful and accurate work. ”

“Even though someone has been arrested, the police will keep working on this investigation to make more progress. ‘

The investigation is not related to the war crime inquiries that started in 2018 and involved five people in the UK.

From April to June 1994, about 800,000 people in Rwanda were killed in just 100 days.

Funding crisis hits Student Loan Trust Fund as fund struggles to pay GHS50m to eligible persons

Ghana’s Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), designed to provide subsidized loans to tertiary students, is facing an acute funding challenge, leaving approximately GHS50 million unpaid to eligible applicants for the 2023 academic year.

Executive Director of African Education Watch (Eduwatch), Kofi Asare, has warned that the strain on the SLTF is expected to intensify in 2024 due to inadequate government financing.

The 2023 West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE) results, marking the best performance in four years under the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy, have led to a surge in tertiary applications. The SLTF’s struggle to meet the demands, exacerbated by delayed loan disbursements and limited funding, poses a significant threat to aspiring students.

As the guarantor system was eliminated, progress was hindered by the current circumstances surrounding SLTF operations, contradicting the fundamental goals of the scheme, according to Asare. Despite the GH₵2,000 average annual student loan falling far short of the GH₵15,000 needed for humanities programs, it remains non-responsive to the financial needs of economically disadvantaged tertiary students.

“At the end of the 2023 academic year, loans owed students by the Student Loan Trust Fund exceeded GH₵50 million. The underfunded students’ loan scheme remains a financial barrier to tertiary access for needy students, focusing primarily on existing students to the detriment of prospective students in need of financial assistance for their admissions,” highlighted Asare.

Before 2022, only 39 percent of WASSCE candidates progressed to tertiary education in the following academic year. The surge in second-cycle enrollment, driven by the free SHS policy, compounds the challenge, potentially leading to increased youth unemployment.

Stakeholders are urgently calling for enhanced funding for the student loan scheme, advocating for bursaries to prospective tertiary students and an increase in beneficiary amounts to reflect economic realities. The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the primary source of SLTF funding, now faces scrutiny for its effectiveness and role in timely and realistic fund disbursement.

Civil society organizations in the education sector are pushing for a review of the SLTF law, urging an increase in the minimum share of GETFund from the current two percent to at least 10 percent. This adjustment aims to ensure adequate funding for the SLTF and a more responsive financial support system for students.

“The law must be reviewed. The current minimum of two percent must be revised to 10 percent so that SLTF can receive enough funds to operate. Fixing this financing architecture will allow for earlier disbursements, ensuring students receive funding at the right time and increasing the average disbursement to meet realistic fee levels,” emphasized Mr. Asare. The call for urgent action resonates as Ghana grapples with the imperative of sustaining accessible and affordable tertiary education.

Indian naval forces save Pakistani seamen from pirate attacks

The Indian navy saved 19 Pakistani sailors after their boat was taken by pirates near Somalia.

The Indian warship INS Sumitra saved people for the second time in 36 hours.

Some time ago, the ship saved 17 Iranian sailors from another boat that was taken over by pirates, according to the navy.

The Indian navy has helped many ships and sailors in trouble recently.

Recent attacks on ships near the coast of Somalia have made people worry that there might be more pirates in the area.

The INS Sumitra is now on a mission to protect the waters near Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden.

The navy said their ship helped a boat in trouble on January 28th and stopped an Iranian boat. Naval officers made the pirates let the crew and the boat go safely.

After the 17 crew members were set free, the ship was cleaned and allowed to keep sailing. The statement didn’t say if the pirates are okay or not.

On Tuesday, the navy said they used INS Sumitra to find and stop another fishing boat called Al Naeemi that had an Iranian flag.

The navy people got on the ship to clean it and make sure the crew was okay.

The pirates’ situation wasn’t talked about more, but a picture on X showed Navy people with guns watching over men who had their hands tied.

On Saturday, the Seychelles military saved six Sri Lankan fishermen after their boat was taken over by some other people.

According to a news report by Bloomberg, the rise in piracy near Somalia’s coast is connected to the problems in keeping the seas safe from attacks by the Houthis, a rebel group supported by Iran, in the Red Sea.

On 26 January, the Indian Navy sent its warship INS Visakhapatnam to help a burning tanker in the Gulf of Aden after it was hit by a missile. Ships from France and the United States also helped the boat.

In January, Indian navy commandos saved 21 crew members from a ship attacked by pirates near Somalia.

  • Level of dishonesty and disregard for Ghanaians under this govt unprecedented – Joyce Bawah

Level of dishonesty and disregard for Ghanaians under this govt unprecedented – Joyce Bawah

Special Aide to former President, John Dramani Mahama, has accused the Akufo-Addo-led government of displaying an unprecedented level of dishonesty and disregard for the welfare of the Ghanaian people, particularly in the context of the ongoing galamsey crisis.

In a statement she noted that there is a stark contrast between the President’s promises and the apparent realities exposed by the leaked report on activities of illegal mining authored by the former chairman of the Inter Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Prof Frimpong Boateng.

“The level of dishonesty and disregard for the Ghanaian people by this NPP Government is unprecedented and gravely unimaginable.

This president promised to put his presidency on the line to end galamsey at a time when it was axiomatic that they were and are heavily involved in it. This is manifestly evident in Frimpong Boateng’s report, bearing in mind that the president himself commissioned this work.

President Akufo-Addo in 2017, vowed to put his presidency on the line to end the menace of illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey.

His statement now appears to be in stark contradiction to the findings of the Frimpong Boateng report, according to Joyce Bawah. The report, commissioned by the President himself, revealed the involvement of government officials and members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in galamsey activities.

Joyce further noted that the treatment meted out to the former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, in the aftermath of the leaked report has become a matter of public concern. She further noted that the apparent lack of decisive action against those implicated raises questions about the government’s commitment to addressing the environmental and economic ramifications of galamsey.

“How the former Minister has since been treated in the aftermath of the leaked report is now a matter of public record and needs no reiteration.

“That galamsey is perpetrated by members of the president’s team and government is confirmed, and it has been established that some NPP members have been using expensive mining equipment without authorisation, raping the state of its natural resources, and destroying our water bodies; whilst Akufo Addo looks on unconcerned,” she said

Joyce Bawah added that President Akufo-Addo’s purported inaction on the matter raises doubts about the sincerity of his commitment to eradicating the illegal mining practice.

  • Mahama has been a victim of extreme prejudice and political propaganda by Akufo-Addo  – Joyce Bawah

Mahama has been a victim of extreme prejudice and political propaganda by Akufo-Addo  – Joyce Bawah

Aide to former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has accused the current administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo of subjecting the former President to extreme prejudice and engaging in political propaganda.

Joyce Bawah contends that the current President, Nana Akufo-Addo, harbored ambitions of ascending to the presidency at any cost, leading to a campaign aimed at destroying Mahama, who was once considered a friend and colleague.

Bawah pointed to instances, such as the Ford vehicle issue and the bus branding “scandal,” where accusations of corruption were hurled at Mahama by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 election campaign.

She noted that these incidents were strategically utilized as political leverage to paint the NDC and its leadership as incompetent and incapable of managing the nation’s affairs.

“It is worth noting that today, Akufo Addo and Bawumia are in power, but they have yet to be able to prove any of these claims,” remarked Bawah.

She argued that the current administration has failed to substantiate the allegations made against Mahama and the NDC during the previous election cycle.

Bawah emphasized that the Ghanaian public is growing increasingly disillusioned with the current administration, accusing them of corruption and associating comfortably with corrupt practices.

She highlighted what she perceived as a level of dishonesty and disregard for the well-being of the Ghanaian people that is unprecedented and gravely unimaginable.

  • US arms sales overseas reaches historic high of $238 billion in 2023

US arms sales overseas reaches historic high of $238 billion in 2023

The amount of weapons that the US sold to other countries went up a lot last year. It reached a record of $238 billion because Russia invaded Ukraine and caused more countries to want to buy weapons.

The US government made deals to sell $81 billion worth of stuff, which is 56% more than last year, according to the state department.

Other sales were made by US defense companies directly to other countries.

Poland, which is next to Ukraine, is buying a lot of new military equipment.

Poland spent $12 billion on Apache helicopters, $10 billion on High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, and $3. 75 billion on M1A1 Abrams tanks, according to a report for the US government’s fiscal year that ended in October.

It also used $4 billion on a system for controlling battles against air and missile attacks.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk promised to keep upgrading Poland’s military, as the previous government planned to make it the strongest in Europe.

Can Himars missiles help Ukraine win against Russia.

Meanwhile, Germany spent $8. 5 billion on Chinook helicopters. Bulgaria spent $1. 5bn on Stryker armored vehicles and Norway purchased $1bn worth of multi-purpose helicopters.

The Czech Republic spent $5. 6 billion to purchase F-35 jets and weapons.

The state department said that selling weapons and trading in defense equipment are important tools for US foreign policy. These actions could have big effects on security in different parts of the world for a long time.

Sales increased because countries are buying fewer weapons from Russia, which used to be the second biggest seller of weapons after the US for many years. This information was shared by the person in charge of the department’s arms transfers office.

Mira Resnick from Politico said that the Russian defense industry is not doing well and it is not getting the money it needs from selling weapons to other countries.

President Joe Biden’s team says that helping Ukraine can make money for America by selling weapons there. However, American politicians are becoming more likely to stop giving direct help to Ukraine. Many Republicans want to make aid to Ukraine depend on changing the US immigration laws.

On Wednesday, the Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will go to a Lockheed Martin missile facility in Alabama to show how important the US defence industry is to the alliance.

Outside Europe, the report said that South Korea spent $5 billion on F-35 jets and Australia spent $6. 3 billion on C130J-30 Super Hercules planes. Japan made a deal to buy an E-2D Hawkeye surveillance plane for $1 billion.

  • 3 Palestinian militants killed by Israeli police during hospital raid in West Bank

3 Palestinian militants killed by Israeli police during hospital raid in West Bank

Israeli soldiers have shot and killed three fighters in a hospital in Jenin, in the West Bank that is controlled by Israel.

The security camera video showed a group of undercover police officers pretending to be doctors and regular people walking down a hallway with their guns ready.

The Israeli army said that the fighters were hiding in the hospital and that one of them was getting ready to do an attack.

The Palestinian Authority’s health ministry said Israel attacked hospitals and caused many deaths.

Hamas, a group of Palestinians with guns who follow the Islamic religion, is fighting with Israel in Gaza. They say that Israeli forces killed three of their fighters, including one of their own members, after Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October.

Another group with weapons, called Palestinian Islamic Jihad, said two of the people who died were part of their group and were siblings. It also said that one of them has been getting help at the hospital.

The security camera at Ibn Sina hospital recorded a video of the Israeli undercover unit moving quickly through a hallway with their weapons pointed in different directions. Someone took clothes from a person who was kneeling with their hands behind their head, and then covered their head with the clothes.

There is a lot of fighting in the West Bank since the 7 October attacks. Israeli soldiers are arresting Palestinians and there are fights almost every day. Jenin has been a target of raids for a long time because it is a place where militants are strong.

Since October 7th, Israeli soldiers have killed at least 357 Palestinians in the West Bank, and Israeli settlers have killed at least eight, according to the United Nations.

Palestinians from the West Bank have attacked and killed at least 10 Israelis in the West Bank and Israel recently.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that the Hamas suspect who was killed had been planning an attack similar to the October 7th massacre. On that day, a large group of Hamas fighters attacked Israel from Gaza, and around 1,300 people, mostly civilians, were killed. They also took around 250 people as hostages back to Gaza.

The attack made Israel start a fight in Gaza to try to destroy Hamas. The health ministry in Gaza, run by Hamas, says that over 26,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the Israeli attack.

The news agency in the West Bank, Wafa, said that three Palestinians in the hospital were killed on purpose.

As per the hospital staff, around 10 Israeli special forces in regular clothes went to the third floor and used quiet weapons to kill the men.

One of the PIJ members who was killed had been in the hospital for treatment since October 25th.

  • Ecowas: Nigeria chastises states for leaving regional alliance

Ecowas: Nigeria chastises states for leaving regional alliance

Nigeria says Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger disappointed their people by leaving Ecowas.

This is the first statement from the leader of the economic and political group since the three governments said they were leaving on Sunday.

The three countries were already kicked out of Ecowas because they had recent coups.

The leaders of their military have moved away from their connection to France and made their relationship with Russia stronger.

They said they wanted to make things safe before holding elections, so they made a deal to help each other. This deal is called the Alliance of Sahel States.

They say Ecowas is being controlled by other countries and not doing enough to stop the terrorist attacks in their countries.

On Monday, it was reported that 22 people were killed in a suspected terrorist attack on a village in Niger near the Mali border. A person in charge of the area said some people came to Motagatta in Tillaberi on motorcycles and began shooting at the residents.

Pulling out will be tough because the community promises to let people travel without a visa and live and work in member countries. That’s what AFP news agency found in their analysis.

Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger were some of the first countries to join Ecowas almost 50 years ago.

The three countries and Ecowas were not getting along well after coups happened in Niger in July, Burkina Faso in 2022 and Mali in 2020. Ecowas asked the three countries to go back to being ruled by civilians.

Nigeria’s foreign ministry said that the three countries left without good intentions and criticized their military leaders.

“Leaders who were not chosen by the people are pretending to oppose their people’s right to make important decisions about their freedom to move, trade, and choose their own leaders,” it said.

The ministry also said that Nigeria, which is the largest member of Ecowas and is Niger’s main economic partner, still wants to talk with the three countries.

Last week, Burkina Faso said it got 25,000 tons of wheat for free from Russia. Russia also opened its embassy there again in December. The embassy had been closed when the Soviet Union fell apart.

Russia has been trying to make new friends in Africa and other places because Western countries are angry at them for fighting in Ukraine.

However, there are many important countries trying to gain power and influence in Africa, such as China, India, Turkey, the Gulf states, South Korea, Western nations, and Japan.

Police detain five guys after discovering bodies in remote Californian desert

The police have taken five people into custody after finding several dead bodies with gunshot wounds in a faraway part of southern California’s Mojave Desert.

Six dead bodies were discovered after someone who had been shot called 911 for help. The police helicopter was sent to the scene of the crime.

Investigators from the San Bernardino Sherriff’s Office said on Monday that the argument seems to be about illegally making marijuana.

Police have found out who four of the six victims are.

All the bodies, which were all men, were found on January 23rd near a road close to the town of El Mirage in San Bernardino County. Police said all six people were killed by gunshots.

Sgt Michael Warrick told reporters on Monday that four of the victims had suffered serious burns.

The investigation started when 911 got a call from a person who said they were shot.

A police helicopter went up and found the victims, as well as a car and van with bullet holes around 8:15 pm local time (4:15 am GMT), about 90 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Four men were close together, and another man was in a car. The police found the last dead person not far from there.

The video from the sky showed the SUV full of bullet holes, broken windows, and signs of a fire.

“Sgt Warrick said we think the reason for this seems to be a fight about marijuana. ”

The police said in a statement that the victims had planned to meet at the place to buy marijuana.

Five men were arrested for shooting six people at a location. The reasons for the shooting are still being investigated.

Investigators took eight guns and are checking to see if they were used in the killings.

Officials didn’t want to say if the killings were connected to cartels or gangs. They just said it was organized crime.

In California, adults have been allowed to buy and use cannabis since 2016, but there is still a problem with people selling untaxed marijuana illegally.

Suspected human remains discovered by Irish police in County Cork

The Irish police, known as Gardaí, discovered what they believe to be human remains in a part of County Cork.

The garda found something near Whitegate village at lunchtime with the help of a dog.

The doctor will examine the body and use dental or DNA records to figure out who it is.

RTÉ says that police were looking in the surrounding area to find 47-year-old Kieran Quilligan, who disappeared from Cork City in September.

It is not clear if the discovery on Monday is connected to the big search.

A police officer said they are looking into finding what might be human remains.

“Police from Anglesea Street are currently in Rostellan, County Cork, where they found skeletal remains today. ”

A spokesperson said that they are still trying to figure out who the dead person is, and the area is still blocked off for investigation.

  • Man spared jail time after stealing Wizard of Oz slippers

Man spared jail time after stealing Wizard of Oz slippers

The man who claimed to have stolen Judy Garland’s ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz will not be imprisoned.

Terry Jon Martin, who is 76 years old, admitted in October that he stole an important piece of artwork.

His lawyers had requested no jail time and made an agreement for the time he has already spent in jail.

Martin confessed to stealing the slippers because an old friend from a criminal group convinced him to do it for one final big job in 2005.

During a court meeting in Minnesota, the former criminal didn’t show any feelings when the punishment was given. He couldn’t stand up from his chair after the meeting, as reported by the Associated Press.

Martin, who was in jail for stealing things, is now getting special care in hospice. His lawyers say he might only have six months to live.

The ruby slippers were stolen from a museum in Minnesota in 2005, when someone broke in through a window at night.

Martin’s lawyer, Dane DeKrey, asked for mercy in a letter last week. He said that Martin hasn’t done anything wrong in almost 10 years since getting out of prison.

However, someone who used to be in the mob contacted him and persuaded him to steal the slippers. The slippers were borrowed by the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

At first, Terry said no to joining the illegal job. DeKrey wrote that old habits are hard to change, and the idea of a ‘final score’ kept him awake at night.

Martin confessed to breaking the glass of the museum door and display case with a heavy hammer to steal the slippers, which were insured for $1 million.

He said he wanted to sell the rubies from the slippers, but he found out they were made of glass and got rid of them a few days later.

Martin said he never watched the Wizard of Oz movie and doesn’t know why the slippers are important in our culture.

He didn’t get in trouble for the crime until 13 years later. The FBI found the slippers and arrested him after a man offered to help the insurer get them back.

At least five sets of ruby slippers worn by Garland in the movie are still around.

  • Volta Regional NPP chairman accuses NDC of exploiting negativity in bid for power

Volta Regional NPP chairman accuses NDC of exploiting negativity in bid for power

Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Makafui Woanyah, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of strategically hoping for challenges in Ghana under the Akufo-Addo government.

Woanyah claims the NDC aims to capitalize on negativity and use it as leverage in their campaign strategy for the upcoming December 2024 general elections.

Speaking at the acclamation ceremony of John Peter Amewu as the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Hohoe in the Volta Region, Woanyah asserted that the NDC‘s focus on negativity is an attempt to secure victory at the polls. He expressed confidence that despite the challenges faced by the country, the NPP-led government, under the leadership of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would prevail.

“The NDC wants to leverage whatever bad thing will happen in the country to come to power. I can assure you that nothing bad will happen. Today the economy of this country is progressing gradually, and I can assure you that everything will turn in our favor,” Woanyah assured.

He criticized the NDC for allegedly lacking a positive agenda and focusing on negativity rather than presenting their plans for the country. Woanyah questioned the motives behind the NDC’s campaign strategy, especially considering the leadership experience of former President John Mahama.

“NDC is preaching negativity; they are not telling us what they want to come and do in this country. Has John Mahama not led this country? So what is he looking for? What is he saying?” Woanyah questioned.

Woanyah also addressed recent attempts by the NDC to undermine the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy and downplay the performance of its beneficiaries in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). He labeled the comments from the NDC’s presidential candidate as unfortunate and urged voters in the Hohoe Constituency to maintain their faith in the NPP.

“The Free SHS produced a very good result, and we are all happy about it except for the NDC presidential candidate, who said the WASSCE candidates cheated during the examination and did not deserve their grades, which is very unfortunate,” Woanyah stated.

He urged the electorate in Hohoe to vote massively for John Peter Amewu and Vice President Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing the continuation of the digitization agenda and the goal of positioning Ghana on par with developed nations. Woanyah expressed optimism that the NPP would break the eight-year power jinx in the fourth republic and emerge victorious in the 2024 elections.

  • Ghana recorded mobile money transactions worth GHC1.912 trillion in 2023 – Report

The mobile money landscape in Ghana witnessed an unprecedented surge in 2023, reaching a record-breaking total transaction value of GHS1.912 trillion, according to the January 2024 Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana

This substantial increase marked a significant rise from the GHS1.07 trillion recorded in the previous year, highlighting the growing reliance on mobile money services in the country.

The report detailed that the first 10 months of 2023 alone saw a remarkable GHS1.527 trillion in mobile money transactions. December 2023 emerged as a standout month, recording the highest monthly transaction value of GHS199.3 billion.

The data from the Bank of Ghana further revealed a consistent upward trend in mobile money transactions throughout the year. Every month in 2023 witnessed transactions surpassing GH¢100 billion, signifying the integral role mobile money plays in the financial landscape.

In January 2023, the mobile money transactions amounted to GHS130.1 billion, a substantial increase from GHS76.2 billion in the same period in 2022. The momentum continued, with transactions reaching GHS134.0 billion in February 2023 (compared to GHS76.5 billion in February 2022) and further escalating to GHS147.5 billion in March 2023 (March 2022: GHS90.5 billion).

Although there was a slight dip to GHS138.8 billion in April 2023 (compared to GHS87.7 billion in April 2022), the figures quickly rebounded. May 2023 saw a surge to GHS159.7 billion (May 2022: GHS71.4 billion), followed by GHS149.4 billion in June 2023 (June 2022: GHS77.1 billion).

July 2023 marked a significant milestone with a record-breaking transaction value of GHS169.6 billion. Subsequent months showed fluctuations, with GHS161.8 billion in August 2023, GHS157.0 billion in September 2023 (compared to GHS88.2 billion in September 2022), and an all-time high of GHS179.2 billion in October 2023.

The upward trajectory continued, reaching GHS185.9 billion in November 2024. Despite this impressive performance in the mobile money sector, it remains uncertain whether the government is meeting its Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) target for 2023, given the current E-Levy rate of 1.0%.

The surge in mobile money transactions underscores the increasing reliance on digital financial services in Ghana and sets the stage for further advancements in the country’s financial technology landscape.
