Icon of the Seas: Biggest cruise ship in the world begins its first journey from Miami

The biggest cruise ship in the world has started its first trip from Miami, Florida. People are worried about the ship causing pollution by releasing methane gas.

The Icon of the Seas is 365 meters long and has 20 floors. It can hold a maximum of 7,600 passengers. Royal Caribbean Group owns it.

The boat is going on a trip to visit different islands in the tropics for seven days.

Environmentalists are saying that the LNG-powered ship will release harmful methane gas into the air.

Even though LNG is cleaner than fuel oil, it can still leak methane into the air.

Methane is a stronger greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Bryan Comer, who is the director of the Marine Programme at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), said it’s a bad move. He told Reuters news agency that.

“He said using LNG as a marine fuel emits more than 120% extra greenhouse gas emissions than marine gas oil. ”

Earlier this week, the ICCT said that methane emissions from ships using LNG fuel are higher than what current regulations say.

Methane is a very strong greenhouse gas. It holds in 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide in the atmosphere for 20 years. Reducing these gases is very important to help stop the earth from getting too warm.

Royal Caribbean claims that the Icon of the Seas is 24% better at using energy than what is needed for new ships, according to the International Maritime Organization. The company wants to make a ship that doesn’t create any pollution by 2035.

Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina’s winning World Cup team, who plays for Inter Miami, was at the ship’s naming ceremony on Thursday. He put a football on a stand to break a champagne bottle for good luck.

The building of Icon of the Seas cost $2 billion or £1. 6 billion The resort has seven pools, six big slides, and over 40 places to eat and drink.

According to the report, the country as of December 2023 had received $16.6 billion from its exports compared to the estimated 14 billion dollars it spent on importing goods for the same period.

Commodities such as gold and cocoa contributed $7.6bn and $2.1bn respectively to the total export value.

Growth in gross international reserves led to a marginal increase in the country’s import cover from 2.3 months in September to 2.4 months in October.

I’m the undefeated – K T Hammond boasts after NPP primaries victory

Incumbent MP for the Adansi Asoka Constituency has taken a swipe at his contenders in the Nee Patriotic Party, following his victory in the election.

He challenged his contenders to look elsewhere in any election other than the Adansi Asoka constituency since he is the champion of the area and cannot be defeated by anyone.

He made the remarks after beating his opponents in the election.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa, K.T Hammond says he remains the “undefeated, undisputed heavyweight champion of Adansi Asokwa.”

The Trade and Industry Minister beat Samuel Binfoh Darkwa in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primary held in the Adansi Asokwa on Saturday, January 27.

He won the primary with 311 votes while Mr Binfoh Darkwa polled 125 votes.

Addressing journalists after being declared winner of the polls, the Trades Minister said “Mohammed Ali of blessed memory after I think he had beaten George Foreman he said ‘I am the undefeated, undisputed heavyweight champion of the politics of Adansi Asokwa.’ I remain the champion, undefeated no champion, no ‘libilibi,’ no mouth no mouth, nobody.”

He further advised future contenders to look elsewhere, adding that he can not be stopped by anyone except God.

“I want to tell people who want to contest the Adansi Asokwa seat [that] when thank God there is still some life in me you must go and blow the necessary sear. People of Adansi Asokwa KT Hammond is unbeatable, he is unstoppable. The only person who beats and stops KT Hammond is the Almighty Allah,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the Adansi Asokwa MP earlier accused Mr Darkwah of employing thugs to assault his supporters.

He alleged that his supporters were attacked in the early hours of Saturday, January 27.

  • UN offers assistance after employees accused of attacking Israel

UN offers assistance after employees accused of attacking Israel

The leader of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees has called on countries that have ceased funding to reconsider their “unexpected” actions.

More than two million people in the Gaza Strip rely on it to survive, according to Philippe Lazzarini.

Eight countries, including the UK, took action because Israel said some UNRWA staff were involved in the deadly Hamas attacks on Israel on 7 October.

The agency is looking into it and has already fired those workers.

Israel has been saying for a long time that some parts of the UN, like UNRWA, are not fair and may even be against Jewish people.

Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US have stopped giving money to UNRWA.

Established in 1949, UNRWA is the largest United Nations agency working in Gaza. It gives medical care, schooling, and other help to Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. It gives jobs to about 13,000 people in Gaza.

Since Israel started fighting back against Hamas, UNRWA has been using its buildings in Gaza to protect many people who had to leave their homes.

On Saturday, Mr. Lazzarini said it was surprising that funds were stopped because of allegations against a few staff members. UNRWA took quick action by firing them and asking for an independent investigation.

“It would be very wrong to punish an agency and a whole community because of allegations of crimes by some people, especially during a war, when people are being forced to leave their homes, and there are political problems in the area. ”

“UNRWA gives a list of all its workers to the countries they work in every year, even Israel. ” The agency did not get any complaints about particular staff members.

Mr Lazzarini said that a UN office is going to look into the terrible accusations and find out what really happened.

An adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the media on Friday that the Hamas attacks on 7 October involved people who are getting paid by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

Mark Regev said they had evidence that teachers at UNRWA schools had openly rejoiced about the attacks. Hamas fighters killed about 1,300 people, mostly innocent civilians, and took 250 more as hostages.

Mr Regev also mentioned an Israeli hostage who said she was kept in the home of someone who worked for UNRWA after she was released.

“They have a group that is controlled by Hamas and I think it’s about time for the UN to look into the connections between UNRWA and Hamas,” he said.

The claims made the big donors react.

The UK government is very upset that UNRWA staff may have been part of the attack on Israel on 7 October. They have condemned this terrorist act many times.

“The UK is stopping giving money to UNRWA for now while we look into these worrying claims,” they said.

Before, the US government said it would stop giving more money to the UN agency because it was really worried about the accusations.

The EU will decide what to do next after looking at the results of the investigation.

The US, Germany, and EU give a lot of money to UNRWA.

The UN leader, António Guterres, said he was very shocked by this news.

Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, wants to shut down UNRWA’s operations in Gaza after the war.

However, the Palestinian Authority’s minister for civilian affairs, Hussein Al-Sheikh, said that countries stopping support for the important UN agency could cause significant political and humanitarian problems.

The attacks on October 7th caused Israel to strike back hard on Hamas in Gaza. They used airstrikes and shelling that resulted in the deaths of over 26,000 Palestinians, according to the health ministry run by Hamas in that area.

UNRWA is having a hard time getting help to many of the 1. 7 million people who had to leave their homes because of 12 weeks of fighting.

  • Ukraine claims to have discovered significant arms corruption

Ukraine claims to have discovered significant arms corruption

Ukraine’s security service found corruption in a military arms purchase worth around $40 million.

The SBU is looking into five important people in the defence ministry and a company that provides weapons.

The military signed a deal for 100,000 mortar shells in August 2022.

The money was paid early and some of it was sent to another country, but no weapons were given.

Corruption has been a big problem for Ukraine in trying to join the European Union.

The SBU found that officials from the ministry of defense and managers of arms supplier Lviv Arsenal stole almost 1. 5 billion hryvnias when buying shells.

The investigation found that ex and current big leaders of the Ministry of Defence and bosses of related companies are part of the stealing of money.

The SBU said that even though the contract for the shells was agreed six months after Russia invaded Ukraine, they never sent any artillery shell.

The police caught one of the suspects trying to leave Ukraine and they are now in jail.

The prosecutor general of Ukraine has recovered the stolen money and will give it back to the defense budget.

Ukraine has had a lot of problems with corruption for a long time.

When Volodymyr Zelensky became President of Ukraine in 2019, he said that stopping corruption was one of the most important things he wanted to work on.

The new claims are happening while Republicans in the US are against President Joe Biden’s plan to give more help to Ukraine.

In August, President Zelensky removed all the people in charge of military recruitment to stop some people from avoiding being drafted into the military.

Ukraine was listed as the 116th least corrupt out of 180 countries in a 2022 index by Transparency International.

However, actions to stop corruption are starting to have an impact. It is among the top 10 countries rising in Transparency International’s ranking, climbing 28 places in 10 years.

In a series of unexpected twists, several New Patriotic Party (NPP) incumbents experienced shocking defeats, losing their parliamentary seats in the highly anticipated party primaries held today, January 27, 2024, across various constituencies.

The surprising outcomes have left political observers and party members buzzing with speculation about the factors that led to these unexpected upsets.

One of the most notable losses came from the Essikado Ketan constituency, where the former Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee Against Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Charles Bissue, secured a resounding victory over the incumbent.

One of the major upsets came in the Tano North constituency, where the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Freda Prempeh, saw her bid for re-election thwarted. Dr. Gideon Boako, Spokesperson for the Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emerged victorious with 444 votes, overshadowing Prempeh’s 221 votes.

Dome-Kwabenya witnessed another shocking defeat as the outspoken Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Adwoa Safo, succumbed to the rising political figure Mike Ocquaye Jr. In a convincing win, Ocquaye Jr. secured 1194 votes, leaving Safo with only 328.

The Abuakwa North constituency also experienced a change of guard, with incumbent Gifty Twum-Ampofo narrowly losing to Nana Ampaw Addo-Frempong, popularly known as “Buffalo,” who garnered 222 votes compared to Twum-Ampofo’s 202.

Deputy Minister of Health, Tina Gifty Mensah, became another high-profile casualty as she faced defeat in the Weija Gbawe constituency. Jerry Ahmed Shab emerged victorious with 786 votes, surpassing Mensah’s 361 votes.

In the Effia primary in the Western Region, Minister for Public Enterprises, Joseph Cudjoe, suffered a loss to financial analyst Isaac Nyarko Boamah, further highlighting the unexpected outcomes in these primaries.

Sheila Bartels, who contested in the Ablekuma North poll, faced a narrow defeat as Akua Afriyie polled 756 votes to Bartels’ 637.

  • Nana Yaa Brefo shades Dome Kwabenya constituents for voting Adwoa Safo out due to marriage

Nana Yaa Brefo shades Dome Kwabenya constituents for voting Adwoa Safo out due to marriage

Outspoken media personality, Nana Yaa Brefo, has criticised delegates in the Dome Kwabenya Constituency for claiming to vote Sarah Adwoa Safo out because she is married.

In a surprising revelation, Nana Yaa Brefo opened up about conversations she had with some female delegates in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency concerning the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

According to her, some female constituents expressed reservations about voting for the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Sarah Adwoa Safo, based on her marital status.

Nana Yaa Brefo disclosed that during her engagements with delegates, she was taken aback by the revelation that some female constituents are opposed to voting for Adwoa Safo because she is married.

The reasoning behind this opposition is the perception that a married MP may prioritize her family over her duties, and therefore, may not give the necessary attention to the constituents.

While acknowledging that Adwoa Safo may have had her flaws and faced criticism, Nana Yaa Brefo emphasized that voting against her solely due to her gender and marital status does not make logical sense. She expressed her disbelief that such views were coming from fellow women.

“Adwoa had her flaws; it got to a point where it was annoying, and she did not handle it well. She genuinely might have a problem, but the way Ken Agyapong and others came out to say they’ve begged her was very bad and indefensible,” Nana Yaa Brefo stated in a video shared on her Instagram page.

Furthermore, she expressed difficulty recalling the projects undertaken by Adwoa Safo’s closest contender, Mike Oquaye Jnr, during his tenure as Ghana’s High Commissioner to India. Nana Yaa Brefo noted that despite Mike Oquaye Jnr’s potential as a candidate, she could not vividly remember the specific contributions he brought from India.

“Mike Oquaye Jr. Is my friend; he has his shortcomings like he is not very free with everyone and somehow arrogant but he is a very nice person and a hardworking guy who deserves to be an MP. As an ambassador, I can’t recollect what exactly he brought from India. I’m not saying he hasn’t done anything, but I cannot remember sincerely speaking,” she added.

The unique spectacle unfolded when both candidates arrived at the voting center to cast their ballots during the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primaries.

What started as a solo singing performance by Mr Asenso Boakye, who chose a popular Ghanaian gospel song, turned into an impromptu musical exchange when Ralph Agyapong joined in.

Asenso Boakye began singing the gospel tune, “Ewurade aka se obe hyira yen, obe hyira yen ama ya ye nhyira” translating to “God will definitely bless us when he says so.”

Before he could complete the song, Ralph Agyapong interjected with his own playful twist, singing, “Ewurade aka se wobe ye one term, one term aa na wobe ye,” meaning “When God says you will be in power for one term, you’ll definitely leave office after one term.”

The spontaneous singing duel injected a sense of humor into the electoral atmosphere, generating laughter and light-heartedness among onlookers.

Hon Carlos has ‘killed’ us! – Disappointed delegate laments over amount received for vote

A delegate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema West constituency has voiced her disappointment over the amount she received at the polling center on Saturday, January 27, 2024, during the ongoing parliamentary primaries.

In a video making rounds on social media, the delegate who noted that she was expecting between GHS1,000 and GHS2,000 noted that what she received was “below the belt.”

“Honourable Carlos has killed us. I’ve run at a loss. Look, last four years, considering what my MP paid and the TV I received, if I add the two together, the amount I received today is nowhere close. I’ve really run at a loss. I was expecting to get between GHS1,000 – 2,000, but what I received is below the belt,” she lamented in the video.

The delegate highlighted her financial expectations and the perceived disparity between the current payment and what she received during the previous election cycle. She conveyed her anticipation for the chairman to rectify the situation by adding the balance, stating, “I am currently waiting for the chairman to add the balance so that at least I can have like GHS1K; otherwise, I’m dead.”

This expression of dissatisfaction sheds light on the intricacies of party politics and the expectations of delegates during crucial events such as parliamentary primaries. The financial dynamics within political parties often come under scrutiny, and the concerns raised by this delegate may reflect broader sentiments within the constituency and the party as a whole.

    Major Boakye-Gyan goes home

A distinguished military officer and key figure in Ghana‘s history, Major Boakye-Djan, was laid to rest today.

The funeral service, attended by family, friends, colleagues, and dignitaries, paid tribute to a man whose life left an indelible mark on the nation.

Major Boakye-Djan, who played a significant role in Ghana’s military and political landscape, passed away on August 30, 2023, in Accra, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and commitment to the ideals of the nation.

In attendance was former President, John Dramani Mahama.

The service reunited old military colleagues, including Captain Nkrabea Effah Dartey (retd) and Brig. Mensah Nunoo (retd).

Also present was former President John Dramani Mahama; the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia; a former Ambassador to the UK, Victor Smith, and former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah.

Veteran journalist, Kweku Baako, who had a close relationship with Major Boakye-Djan, was also in attendance.

    Ministration

In his sermon, the General-Secretary of the Christ Apostolic Church International, Apostle Dr Samuel Addai-Kusi, urged mourners to make strategic decisions into eternity.

Basing his sermon on Luke 16: 27-31, where the famous Lazarus and the rich man’s story is told in the Bible, Apostle Dr Addai-Kusi said “it is important to live a life that will be to the benefit of making it into eternity”.

“I present to you life and death, and I will admonish you to choose life,” he said.

The Apostle also quoted the famous John 3:16, to lead “unsaved” mourners to Christ.

    Tributes

The common thread that ran through the tributes from siblings, traditional rulers, children and other personalities and groups was praise for Major Boakye-Djan for his courage, generosity, compassion and boldness to question the status quo.

There were also tributes from former President Mahama, the NDC Chairman, siblings of Major Boakye-Djan, the Abrofohene, Nana Abena Yeboah Djan; the Abrofohemaa, the Drobo Traditional Area, and the Mponoa Akwamuhene, Obrempong Naña Boah Kofi Agyeman II.

Captain Effah Dartey brought the ceremony alive with his signature song, Ma hwe Ewurade Anim, to wrap up his tribute.

His tribute brought back fond memories tracing how he, together with Rawlings and Boakye-Djan, met at Legon and had their hot political debates leading to the 1979 coup (although he, Effah Dartey, did not take part).

    About Major Boakye-Djan

Known as Osahene, Major Boakye-Djan was credited for masterminding the June 4, 1979 coup that brought the late Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings to power.

A journalist, a soldier and a statesman, Osahene’s relationship with Rawlings later became frosty and went beyond repairs.

He was the 19th of 56 siblings, and named after the father’s (Nana Kofi Twene Djan) distinct relative, Kwame Yiadom Boakye, who was a Paramount Chief of Berekum.

A product of both Opoku Ware and Achimota schools, Osahene entered the University of Ghana, Legon, to study English Literature, Linguistics, Sociology and African Studies.

He joined the Ghanaian Times newspaper after university where his journalism talent was honed.

The military officer had the opportunity, under the Thompson Foundation Course, to study at Cardiff, Wales.

He also became a lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, and later joined the Daily Graphic (Graphic Communications Group Ltd) and, eventually, the Public Relations Unit of the Ghana Armed Forces.

KT Hammond alleges thugs assaulted some of his supporters

Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, Kobina Tahir Hammond, popularly known as KT Hammond has accused his contender in the New Patriotic Party’s ongoing Parliamentary Primaries, Sammy Binfoh, of assaulting some of his supporters.

In a video making rounds, K T Hammond alleged that Mr Binfoh employed the service of some thugs who attacked his supporters.

As a result, the incumbent MP for Adansi Asokwa, ignited controversy by issuing threats of physical harm to his contender, Sammy Binfoh.

In a video shared on X by Joy News on Saturday, January 27, Hammond accused Binfoh of allegedly hiring thugs to attack his supporters and create chaos in the constituency. Hammond’s response was nothing short of alarming, as he declared his intent to beat Binfoh in the polls and organize thugs to physically assault him.

“I am going to ensure that he is mercilessly beaten to pop. I will humiliate him at the polls and get him beaten. I am not going to organize disturbances; I am just putting it on notice. I will not disorganize anything here, but get him wherever he is and tell him to leave town immediately,” stated the legislator.

Hammond went on to recount a recent incident where he claimed body-built men assaulted some of his followers, leading to a confrontation that ended with macho guys coming to his house to plead for peace. Despite this, Hammond asserted his determination to give Binfoh “two types of showdown” – a beating and public humiliation, coupled with organizing physical violence against him.

This revelation comes amidst the ongoing NPP parliamentary primaries held on Saturday, January 27, 2024, to select candidates for the upcoming 2024 general elections. The primaries are taking place in all 275 constituencies across the country, excluding those where the party has no sitting MPs or where it lost in the 2020 elections.

The inflammatory statements made by the incumbent MP have raised serious concerns about the potential for violence within the party during the primaries, prompting calls for intervention and investigation into the matter. The NPP leadership is expected to address the situation promptly to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process, preserving the integrity of the parliamentary primaries.

    NPP Primaries: Party Executive assaulted

Chaos which ensued in the Pru West constituency of the Bono East region in the ongoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries has resulted in the hospitalization of one individual after an alleged assault by supporters of a parliamentary aspirant.

The incident occurred around 1:00 am during a meeting when some alleged supporters of parliamentary aspirant Alhaji Gariba Iddrisu reportedly assaulted Tijani, identified as the Deputy Nasara Coordinator.

According to reports from Adom News’ Daniel Tachie, the victim, Tijani, who is purportedly a member of Mr. Jalulah’s camp, was attacked after showing up at a gathering of Mr. Gariba’s supporters, ostensibly to monitor the proceedings.

In recounting the incident, Tijani stated that he meant no harm when he approached the group to inquire about their activities. However, about five supporters reportedly ambushed him, subjecting him to a severe beating.

Tijani is currently receiving medical treatment at the Abaase Health Centre for the injuries sustained during the assault.

The parliamentary race in Pru West has heightened tensions between the contestants, and this incident adds to the challenges faced during the NPP primaries. The party’s leadership is expected to address the situation promptly to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process.

NPP Primaries: Kwesi Pratt weighs in on Manhyia palaver; claims Wontumi is missing in ongoing primaries

Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr., has raised questions and mockingly highlighted the absence of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking on a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on January 26, 2024, Pratt took a mocking tone as he drew attention to the missing status of Chairman Wontumi, less than 24 hours before the scheduled January 27, 2024, election.

“Upon all that we are saying; in the Ashanti region, despite the crucial NPP primaries, their chairman is missing. My own friend Wontumi is missing,” Pratt remarked during the discussion.

He further revealed that he had seen a photo of Wontumi on a sick bed, with reports suggesting serious illness, including speculations of typhoid and malaria.

“When you look at his condition on the sick bed, then his typhoid is very serious because looking at a crucial election like this, the chairman is missing,” Pratt added.

Meanwhile, Wontumi is expected to appear before the Kumasi Traditional Council on January 29, 2024, following a summons issued earlier in the week. The NPP Chairman faces accusations of making disrespectful comments aimed at undermining the authority of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The Kumasi Traditional Council had initially summoned Wontumi for a hearing on January 22, but the NPP General Secretary reported that he was unable to appear due to illness. The summons and subsequent controversies surrounding Wontumi’s appearance have added an extra layer of complexity to the already dynamic political landscape in the Ashanti Region.

Opemsuo Radio, an affiliate of the Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asantehene, has confirmed that Wontumi and others summoned by the Council will indeed appear on the specified date of January 29, 2024, putting an end to conflicting reports circulating in the media.

  • Police Officer injured in ongoing NPP primaries

Police Officer injured in ongoing NPP primaries

A police officer has sustained serious injuries during a violent clash at the New Juaben North constituency in the Eastern Region.

The incident occurred in the midst of an attempt to halt an alleged spiritual incantation at a voting center, reportedly orchestrated by supporters of Nana Agyei, also known as Djoe, a contender in the parliamentary primary.

Reports indicate that a small group of the contender’s supporters gathered at the voting center during the night for the purported incantation. When attempts were made to intervene and stop the ritual, the situation escalated into violence, resulting in a near-fatal attack on the police officer.

The injured officer is currently undergoing treatment at the Koforidua Central Hospital, highlighting the severity of the clash. This incident has cast a shadow over the NPP primaries, adding to the already heightened tension in the lead-up to the crucial electoral process.

In the New Juaben North constituency, where the violent altercation occurred, the competition among candidates is intense. Notable contenders include Seth Kwame Acheampong, the Eastern Regional Minister, as well as Nana Osei Adjei, Joseph Osei Djaba, Philip Twum Yeboah, and Sampson Kwesi Annor.

The altercation underscores the charged atmosphere surrounding the upcoming NPP polls in the region. Seth Acheampong’s bid to return to Parliament is deemed crucial for the NPP, particularly with the exit of key members from the Majority Caucus. Prominent figures leaving Parliament include Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, First Deputy Speaker Joe Osei Owusu, Atta Akyea, Joe Ghartey, Ken Agyapong, and others.

Seth Acheampong, having previously served as a Member of Parliament for the Mpraeso constituency, is now seeking to represent New Juaben North, succeeding the incumbent Nana Adjei Boateng. His extensive parliamentary experience is viewed as invaluable in addressing the gaps left by the voluntary exit of numerous Members of the Majority Caucus of the NPP.

The voluntary exit of these experienced MPs has raised serious concerns about the future trajectory of the NPP, leaving a void in the party’s leadership and parliamentary representation. Seth Kwame Acheampong’s return to Parliament is seen as pivotal, and he is receiving substantial support from delegates and key figures within the NPP to bolster the party’s standing in the next Parliament.

At the constituency level, former New Juaben North NPP chairman Kwadwo Boateng Agyemang has officially declared support for Acheampong, emphasizing his competence, hard work, humility, and vision for the youth.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has entreated members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), especially candidates in the ongoing Parliamentary Primaries, to ensure a more united party after the January 27 primaries.

The Vice President in a Facebook post entreated the candidates to rise above all personal interests and differences and ensure the party emerges victorious at the end of the elections.

“We must rise above personal interests and petty differences and focus on the greater goal of advancing the principles and ideals of our great party, the New Patriotic Party,” he said.

He further noted that “the election of December 2024 is crucial for our party and nation. The NPP needs to come out of this process strengthened, united, and ready to deliver victory in 2024.”

All is set for the New Patriotic Party’s much anticipated Parliamentary primaries scheduled for today, January 27, 2024.

The elections is being held in over 104 constituencies where the party currently has incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs).

Some six (6) constituencies, however, will not partake in the elections. The excluded areas are Mampong and Fomena in the Ashanti Region; Binduri in Upper East Region; Agona West in the Central Region; Akwapim South in the Eastern Region; and Sunyani East in the Bono Region.

So far 321 candidates have been cleared to contest out of the total number of 373 aspirants who filed to contest the primaries.

  • 6 constituencies that will not vote in NPP’s parliamentary primaries scheduled for today

6 constituencies that will not vote in NPP’s parliamentary primaries scheduled for today

Six constituencies, each with incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs), have been excluded from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries scheduled for today, January 27, 2024.

The affected constituencies include Mampong and Fomena in the Ashanti Region, Binduri in the Upper East Region, Agona West in the Central Region, Akwapim South in the Eastern Region, and Sunyani East in the Bono Region.

This decision stems from a myriad of challenges, including court injunctions and internal issues that have been brought to the attention of the party’s national leadership. Notably, Fomena is grappling with a visible rift as an independent candidate emerges from the party’s ranks, despite having a sitting MP.

Sunyani East faces a High Court rejection of the constituency album, leading to a temporary halt in the election of constituency executives. Meanwhile, in Akwapim South, regional executives are engaging in ‘broader consultation’ following the withdrawal of the sitting MP, OB Amoah, from the race.

In an interview on Asempa FM on Thursday, January 25, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the NPP, identified the affected constituencies. He mentioned that he has not received official notification about a potential seventh constituency, the Upper Denkyira East, yet.

Despite these challenges, Kodua assured that the party is fully prepared for the primaries. He disclosed that ballots and election materials have been printed and are ready for distribution. Expressing confidence, he anticipated that the elections would conclude by the 2 pm closing time, urging stakeholders to ensure a smooth exercise.

The NPP had cleared 326 parliamentary aspirants for the January 27 primaries, aimed at selecting candidates for constituencies where the party currently holds parliamentary seats. Out of the 373 aspirants who initially filed to contest after vetting, 33 are running unopposed, while 11 were disqualified, and two others were referred to the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Adding to the complexities, two candidates who were initially cleared have since withdrawn, one submitted incomplete forms, and two did not attend the vetting process. The parliamentary primaries are a critical step for the NPP as it navigates internal challenges and works towards finalizing candidates to represent the party in the upcoming parliamentary elections in December.

  • I wish you all the best but vote for credible and winnable candidates – Akufo-Addo’s lawyer tells delegates

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears up for its parliamentary primaries today, Saturday, January 27, Kow Essuman, the Legal Counsel to President Akufo-Addo, has called on party delegates to prioritize credibility and electability when choosing candidates.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mr Essuman emphasized the significance of selecting candidates capable of securing a robust parliamentary majority for the party. He urged delegates to exercise caution during the primaries, emphasizing the need to prioritize the party’s interests over individual considerations.

“I wish all those contesting in today’s primaries the very best. It is my hope and prayer that the NPP delegates elect credible, winnable candidates to contest the parliamentary elections in December and secure a strong parliamentary majority,” Mr. Essuman stated.

The parliamentary primaries are set to take place in constituencies where the NPP currently holds incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs). Over 104 constituencies across the country will be involved in these elections.

The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, confirmed on Thursday, January 25, that all necessary preparations, including the readiness of ballots and election materials, had been completed and were set for distribution.

Out of the total number of 373 aspirants who filed to contest the primaries, after vetting, 29 are going unopposed, 11 were disqualified, two were referred to the National Executive Committee (NEC), two stepped down, one submitted an incomplete form, and two did not attend the vetting process. This leaves 326 qualified aspirants for the primaries.

Ahead of the exercise, the party announced that the Ghana Police Service would assume full responsibility for security arrangements during the polls. The General Secretary emphasized that no private security personnel or machinery would be permitted at the election grounds, and anyone violating this directive would face consequences from the police.

The parliamentary primaries are a crucial phase for the NPP, aiming to finalize the selection of candidates who will represent the party in the upcoming parliamentary elections in December. The focus on credibility and electability aligns with the party’s strategic goal of securing a strong parliamentary majority for a potential future Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia government to effectively serve the interests of Ghanaians.

Thousands of Palestinian civilians escaping Khan Younis

The Gaza Health Ministry said that Israeli guns hit a group of people waiting for help in Gaza City. At least 20 people were killed and 150 were injured. The Israel army is checking the reports.

The number of people who died and got hurt at a crowded shelter in Gaza went up to 12 dead and over 75 injured. Thomas White, who works for the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, said this.

The agency did not say Israel was responsible, even though they are the only ones with tanks in the conflict. The Israeli military said it is not sure yet if its aircraft or artillery carried out the strike, but is still looking into it. The building might have been damaged by a rocket from Hamas.

The fighting in Khan Younis in southern Gaza is stopping people from getting to the two main hospitals. This means that hundreds of sick people and thousands of displaced people can’t get help. A third hospital was emptied last night, White said.

The Gaza Health Ministry says that more than 25,700 people have died and 63,000 people have been injured since last October. Seven attacks happened in the south of Israel. The attackers were from Gaza and they killed about 1,200 people and took around 250 hostages.

The Minneapolis City Council passed a resolution asking for a stop to the fighting in Gaza, but it’s not a rule that has to be followed.

Mayor Jacob Frey, who is Jewish, tried but was not able to convince council members to make it less harsh, saying the wording was too critical of Israel. The mayor, who is part of the Democratic party, is thinking about saying no to the decision.

The Houthis have been attacking ships since November because they are upset about Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Many Palestinians left the city of Khan Younis and headed towards the Mediterranean coast because there is a lot of fighting between Hamas and the Israeli army in southern Gaza.

Two women talked to someone from the Associated Press and said that Israeli soldiers made them leave the Faisal school where they were staying, and they also took many young men into custody.

“Out of nowhere, the Israeli military used microphones to tell us to leave the area in just 30 minutes,” said Amal, a Palestinian mom who recently had a baby and ran away from the school with her newborn.

For weeks, there has been fighting between Israeli soldiers and Hamas militants in Khan Younis and it has been going on for four months. On Wednesday, the Israeli army told Palestinians to leave the western part of Khan Younis, the day after it said its forces had surrounded the city completely.

“They said we could go, but we had to walk a while, and they checked the young men on the side,” explained Israa Khashan, who was also staying at the school.

“They took some young men with them and left others, so now we are here and don’t know where to go,” she said.

Many Palestinians who had to leave their homes are now living in tents without basic things they need in Muwasi. It’s a sandy area near Khan Younis that Israel said is safe.

The Israeli military has been arresting young Palestinian men who are old enough to fight in Gaza. Several videos have come out showing Palestinian men who were captured by Israeli forces. They were blindfolded and had their clothes taken off, only wearing their underwear.

Several actions in the Senate to use U. SpowerMilitary help for Israel to save people in Gaza started with more liberal lawmakers, including independent Sen.

Erdogan, who doesn’t like what Israel is doing in Gaza, said that Turkey gave some papers that are being used in the case against Israel.

Israeli shooting hits a group of people in Gaza City.

The Health Ministry in Gaza said that Israeli gunfire hit a large group of people waiting for aid in Gaza City on Thursday, causing at least 20 deaths.

Health Ministry spokesperson Ashraf al-Qidra says that 150 more people were hurt in the attack and that a lot of people are seriously hurt. The number of people who died is expected to go up because a lot of seriously hurt people were brought to Shifa Hospital.

The ministry did not say what kind of weapons were used. The Israeli army is checking the reports.

Israeli soldiers and tanks went into Gaza City when the ground invasion started. They have been fighting with militants there for almost two months. The army says they have mostly beaten Hamas in the north part of Gaza, but there are still some small groups fighting back.

The attack has destroyed many neighborhoods and caused a lot of damage in northern Gaza. It’s making people worry if the Palestinians who left their homes as Israel told them to will be able to come back.

Many people in the north don’t receive much help, even though many of them still live there.

Singer and actor will leave the hospital soon.

Israeli singer and actor Idan Amedi, known for his role in the popular show “Fauda,” is leaving the hospital on Thursday after being seriously hurt in January. While his team was placing bombs to blow up a tunnel in the middle of Gaza.

Six Israeli soldiers died during the mission, and many were hurt because a tank shell exploded the explosives too soon before the soldiers were in a safe place.

“Amedi said that even though I was badly hurt, I still have a strong spirit,” in a news conference before going home for rehabilitation. I won’t let this injury define my life. It’s just another challenge to overcome. I will come back to sing and act, and with help from God, I will also come back to fight for my country.

Amedi, who is 35 years old, has been serving in the Israeli military since Hamas started attacking southern Israel in October. Number 7Israel has brought in about 360,000 reserve soldiers from all different jobs to help in the fight against Hamas.

Amedi said he wants to go back to acting in Fauda after he gets better. “Fauda” shows a group of secret agents from Israel’s security agency, Shin Bet, as they work against Palestinians. Some Palestinians feel that the show makes their difficult situation living under Israel’s control in the West Bank seem less important. Amedi acted as Sagi Tzur, a new secret agent, in the show’s second to fourth seasons. He is also a popular singer and songwriter in Israel.

More people have died after a shelter was hit in an attack – United Nations.

A person from the United Nations says 12 people died and over 75 were injured in an attack on a crowded shelter in Gaza.

Thomas White, a top person at the UN agency that helps Palestinian refugees, called UNRWA, said on Thursday that 15 of the injured people were in really bad condition. UNRWA says a building in a shelter holding many Palestinians was hit by two tank shells in Khan Younis on Wednesday. There has been a lot of fighting in the area lately. The building is on fire.

It didn’t accuse Israel directly, because it’s the only side in the fight that has tanks.

The Israeli military said it is not likely that their planes or artillery did the attack but they are still checking. The building might have been hit by a rocket from Hamas.

The fighting in Khan Younis has made it difficult for people to get to the two main hospitals, Nasser and Al-Amal. Many patients and displaced people are stuck there.

White reported that another hospital was cleared out overnight. Some of the patients who left were women who had just given birth by cesarean section.

Britain’s leader asks Israel to stop fighting for a period of time.

A United Nations worker says 12 people have died and over 75 have been hurt in an attack on a packed shelter in Gaza.

Thomas White, a leader at the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, said on Thursday that 15 people who were hurt are in very bad shape. UNRWA reports that a building in a shelter for many displaced Palestinians was hit by two tank shells in Khan Younis. This city has experienced a lot of fighting lately. The building is on fire, it said.

It didn’t accuse Israel, which is the only side with tanks in the conflict.

The Israeli military said they are still investigating, but they don’t think their planes or artillery caused the strike. The building could have been hit by a rocket from Hamas.

The fighting in Khan Younis has cut off its two main hospitals, Nasser and Al-Amal, leaving hundreds of patients and thousands of displaced people trapped inside.

White says another hospital was emptied last night, and some of the people who left were women who had just had c-sections.
Britain’s top official asks Israel to stop fighting for a short time.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron has told the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, that they should stop fighting in Gaza right away for humanitarian reasons, and work towards a long-lasting peace agreement.

Cameron is going to Qatar on Thursday to ask for more help to get into Gaza. A shipment of 17 tonnes (19 tons) of tents from the United Kingdom was supposed to be flown from Qatar to Egypt on Thursday.

The United Kingdom supports Israel, but is starting to criticize how they are fighting against Hamas.

Cameron said that the suffering in Gaza is really bad and it’s hard to imagine how bad it is. We need to do more quickly to help the people stuck in this terrible situation. He is asking Israel to give back water, fuel, and electricity to Gaza. We need to stop the fighting right away so we can bring in help and rescue the hostages. Then we need to keep the peace and not start fighting again.

  • Trump named as “presumptive 2024 nominee” by Republican National Committee

Trump named as “presumptive 2024 nominee” by Republican National Committee

The Republican National Committee was considering making Donald Trump their nominee for the 2024 election, but they decided to wait until he has more support before making a decision.

Trump said on Truth Social that he liked the idea of running for president again, but he changed his mind to keep his party united. He won’t be running for president anymore. He said he will complete the process by voting.

The draft says that President Trump is expected to be the candidate for president in 2024. It also means that anyone who likes other candidates can join his team too.

The person who knew about the decision said that the withdrawal happened, but they can’t talk about it to everyone. They didn’t want people to know their name.

If the rule is approved, it would give Trump even more control over the party. This is happening while Nikki Haley is still trying to be chosen as the GOP nominee.

Ronna McDaniel, who is in charge of the Republican National Committee, had already expressed her support for the resolution. On Tuesday, McDaniel said that even though Haley did well in New Hampshire, she believes all Republicans should back Trump as their candidate.

The RNC was going to discuss a plan at their meeting in Las Vegas next week, even though only two states had voted and the former president didn’t have enough supporters to win the nomination.

Haley’s group said that the RNC can’t pick the GOP candidate.

“Nobody pays attention to what the RNC says. ” “We want the Republican voters to pick our party’s nominee, not the people in Washington,” said Olivia Perez-Cubas, who is representing the campaign.

The AP has a rule to not say someone is the “presumptive nominee” until they have enough delegates to win most votes at the party conventions. It could happen as early as March.

But the RNC was allowed to do this because there were no rules against it. If they had used it, it could have helped the Republican Party get ready for the next election against Joe Biden, who is getting ready to run for president again in 2020.

The group has done this before. They said a person will probably be chosen, even before they had enough votes. Reince Preibus, who used to be the RNC Chair, backed Trump in May 2016.

Haley believes that by staying in the race longer than the other candidates, even though she lost in Iowa and New Hampshire to Trump, it shows that she is a strong contender.

Trump has 32 people on his side, and Haley has 17. After the New Hampshire competition, there is still one delegate that has not been given to a candidate.

Haley talked at a big event in South Carolina and told everyone that her campaign received over $1 million in donations after getting second place in New Hampshire. Trump said something that seemed like he was trying to make his supporters afraid.

“Trump said that anyone who helps Birdbrain is not welcome in the MAGA camp anymore. ” “We don’t want them, and we won’t let them in because America is our top priority and always will be. ” Rewrite this text in simpler words.

Haley’s team said on Thursday that they received an extra $1. 2 million dollars were given as gifts after Trump said he would stop anyone from giving money to her campaign.

Trump’s idea didn’t work. A lot of people are donating money to help Haley’s campaign. This means they are fed up with all the problems and are backing Nikki’s plan for a powerful and proud America.

Trump didn’t pay attention to any money given to Haley, and it didn’t affect his decision. J used to work for the government and now he helps Haley as a lobbyist.

“That’s like something from a ‘Godfather’ movie. ” can be rewritten as “It’s similar to something from a ‘Godfather’ movie. ” “He said to never let down your family. ” “You need to stop playing now. ” Please rephrase this text using easier words.

Petrizzo thinks that some Republicans want to talk about Trump and Biden competing against each other, but he wants to remind everyone that the final election is still a long way off.

“I have heard lots of Republican Party leaders, including the RNC chair, say we should help a candidate. ” They want to choose this person to be our representative. Petrizzo said we should help Trump because Iowa and New Hampshire voted for him. There are still 285 days until the election. There is plenty of time remaining.
The Republican National Committee won’t discuss making Donald Trump the party’s 2024 nominee until he has enough people supporting him.

The news was released after Trump said on his social media that he didn’t want to go through with the idea because he wants his party to stay united. He wants to keep using the old way to get people to vote for him in the elections.

The draft predicts that President Trump will be the chosen candidate for the 2024 election and wants the supporters of all candidates to join his team.

Someone who knew about the decision said that the withdrawal had happened. They couldn’t talk about it in public and they wanted to keep their name a secret. This happened on Thursday night. It took place on Thursday evening.

If the rule had been approved, it would have made Trump even more powerful in the party at a time when Nikki Haley is competing against him for the GOP nomination.

RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel had said she supported the resolution before. On Tuesday, McDaniel said that Haley did really well in the campaign, but Republicans need to help Trump, who will be our chosen candidate.

The plan was supposed to be discussed at the RNC’s meeting in Las Vegas next week, even though only two states have voted and the former president did not attend.

Amaliba slams Chairman Wontumi; blames him for negative image of Ghana’s politics

Director of Conflicts Resolution of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has asserted that negative perceptions of politics in Ghana are fueled by figures like the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Amaliba contends that Wontumi’s controversial utterances and actions have contributed to tarnishing the reputation of politics and politicians in the country.

Amidst the backdrop of the Asanteman Traditional Council summoning Chairman Wontumi to the Manhyia Palace to address certain comments he made against the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Amaliba emphasized the role of influential political figures in shaping public perception.

In an interview on Accra-based Tv3, Amaliba highlighted, “Politics in Ghana has been described variously in negative terms, particularly as a dirty game, and in some, they say it is being practised by thieves. I am saying that some of those attributions are as a result of people like Wontumi.”

According to Amaliba, figures like Wontumi are products of a political culture of violence and impunity within the NPP, and their actions have repercussions. He likened Wontumi’s impact to a “monster” created by the NPP to attack opponents, emphasizing that when such a creature turns on its creators, it highlights the consequences of fostering a culture of aggression within the party.

Benign prostate enlargement is a common issue in men over 50, and it is usually not a serious health risk, according to the NHS.

Men with enlarged prostates are not at a higher risk for prostate cancer than men without enlarged prostates.

The duchess is 64 years old and used to be married to Prince Andrew. She is also the mother of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. In the past, the newspapers in Britain liked to write about her a lot. Sarah Ferguson, also known as “Fergie,” wrote books for kids and a romance book for grown-ups.

It’s not common for members of the royal family to share their health problems, but they announced Charles and Kate’s conditions to stop people from guessing why they might have to cancel events.

In recent years, there have been many news stories about the health of the older members of the royal family in Britain.

Rumors about Queen Elizabeth II’s health grew as she had trouble getting around and didn’t show up in public as much during the last months of her long reign. After that, the attention turned to Charles, who became the king when most people his age were already retired.

The company’s recent statement outlines this innovative step, which aligns with Bolt’s commitment to maintaining the safety and reliability of its platform.

Bolt has taken a robust stance against drivers involved in soliciting offline trips, implementing consequential measures that include temporary account blocking and account suspensions. These actions underscore the company’s dedication to curbing the practice of negotiating fares outside the app, a trend that exposes both riders and drivers to potential risks.

Emphasizing user safety, Bolt recently rolled out two additional safety features – trip monitoring and driver alerts. These features serve to proactively engage with users and equip drivers with valuable information about upcoming trips in flagged safety concern areas.

Offline trips, a phenomenon where riders and drivers negotiate fares outside the app, have seen a rise, often driven by drivers seeking alternative income streams. In such scenarios, riders are encouraged to cancel ongoing trips and pay offline, enabling drivers to collect the entire trip fare rather than the typical fraction split between Bolt and the vehicle owner.

The newly introduced cancellation option empowers riders to take swift action in situations where drivers demand payment outside the app or exceed agreed-upon trip fares. Under specific circumstances, riders can now select the option ‘driver asked to pay off-the-app,’ reinforcing Bolt’s commitment to user safety.

Sandra Suzanne Buyole, Public Relations Manager at Bolt Africa, expressed the company’s enthusiasm about the latest cancellation option, stating, “We’re happy to introduce our latest cancellation option, designed to cut down on offline trips and address instances where drivers insist on charging rates exceeding those on the app.”

Bolt strongly discourages both drivers and riders from arranging offline trips, emphasizing the compromise to safety and reliability. Offline trips deactivate critical safety features like GPS tracking and SOS coverage, leaving users without access to essential in-app safety tools.

The rollout of this advanced cancellation feature spans various regions of Africa, including South Africa, with Bolt underscoring the importance of staying online to ensure the effectiveness of safety and emergency features. The move reflects Bolt’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing user safety across all facets of its service.

  • Ukrainians fear prisoner swaps with Russia may end plane disaster

Ukrainians fear prisoner swaps with Russia may end plane disaster

Russia and Ukraine are blaming each other for the crash of a Russian military plane. Families are worried that prisoner swaps may not happen and their loved ones may remain in jail.

Simple words: People are arguing about even the most basic things. Russian officials said that the plane was shot down by Kyiv on Wednesday. They also said that there were 65 Ukrainian prisoners on the plane, and they were going for a prisoner swap. Ukraine said they don’t have proof of prisoners of war and think Russia is messing with their minds. It said that something was supposed to happen on Wednesday.

Both sides didn’t show proof for their accusations, leaving family and friends feeling exposed and without any explanations. Many Ukrainians were already very worried before the incident and hadn’t heard anything from their family members in captivity for months.

Yevheniia Synelnyk’s brother has been held captive for more than a year and a half. She was sad and stressed on Wednesday because different news stories made her worry.

She said, “You don’t know which one is true. ”

The next day, feeling very tired.

“I’m too tired to cry anymore,” she said.

Synelnyk is a member of a group called the Association of Azovstal Defenders’ Families. The group was made in June 2022, after about 2,500 Ukrainian soldiers gave up to Russia because of the Ukrainian president’s orders during the attack on the Azovstal steel mill in May. The association says that about 1,500 workers from the steel mill are still being held prisoner. Ukrainian officials said that many people captured in other battles are being held in Russia.

Yevheniia Synelnyk says that the worries of the prisoners’ families are getting bigger because the prisoners who have come back are telling stories of being tortured and mistreated.

Now, lots of families are worried that the trades will end, said Synelnyk. When soldiers came back, they would tell prisoners’ families about other captives. She hasn’t heard anything about her brother for a year.

The families helped each other on Wednesday.

Synelnyk said that we need to stay strong and be together because we don’t have any other option. He also said that they will continue to plan and hold rallies. “As long as people pay attention to them, they are still alive. ”

Illia, a 21-year-old ex-prisoner of war, goes by the name Smurf and doesn’t share his last name for safety reasons. He goes to the rallies every week and tries to never miss one. He thinks it’s the least he can do for the people who are still stuck in prison.

He clearly remembers the last day at the prison in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky in the Rostov region. In FebruaryHe heard his name in 2023. He didn’t know that he had been put on the lists to trade. First, he and a group of other prisoners of war traveled in a vehicle for three hours. Afterwards, his eyes were covered and he was taken on a plane for about four hours. The plane stopped to pick up more prisoners of war. The person could not see them, but he heard the sound of their hands being taped. The journey ended with a four-hour bus ride to the meeting point.

“I can’t describe these feelings with words, but I will never forget the moment I realized I had been traded,” he said.

After he came back, he did exercises to get better. But the memories of being trapped for ten months still affect his everyday life. He has been losing weight and the doctors don’t know why. He now weighs only 44 kilograms, which is 97 pounds.

Illia said he believes that the incident could harm future interactions, which would spoil many hopes.

“It’s what every prisoner of war dreams of,” Illia said.

  • Sad news hits Mepe as major bridge collapses

Sad news hits Mepe as major bridge collapses

The town of Mepe, already grappling with the aftermath of flooding caused by the Volta River Authority (VRA) spillage, faces yet another unfortunate event as a crucial steel bridge at Saikope has collapsed.

This bridge, vital for connecting the North Tongu town of Juapong to the Central Tongu capital town of Adidome, succumbed to the weight of a fully loaded trailer carrying salt.

Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities resulting from the collapse, but the incident adds another layer of difficulty for the residents of Mepe. The collapse occurred despite warnings, as authorities had previously placed a sign indicating a “weak bridge ahead” for the awareness of road users.

In response to the collapse, District Chief Executive Osborn Devine Fenu issued a public advisory via his personal Facebook Page. Motorists are urged to take an alternate route through another Mepe town, Dadome, to access Adidome and Juapong safely.

Investigations into the cause of the collapse are pending, but the DCE has alleged overloading of the truck as a potential factor. However, it should be noted that authorities had already signaled the compromised state of the bridge by placing warning signs, suggesting a possibility of structural weakness.

A crucial point in the ongoing situation is the maximum load limit sign at the bridge, indicating a threshold of 25 tons. Until investigations conclude, it remains unclear whether the collapse was primarily due to the weakened state of the bridge or the excess tonnage carried by the trailer.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by Mepe, with a combination of flooding and now a disrupted transportation route. The community awaits the outcome of investigations to determine the exact cause of this unfortunate event and to chart a path towards necessary repairs and restoration of essential connectivity.
